This article is about genetic tests for disease and ancestry or biological relationships. For use in forensics, see DNA profiling.

Genetic testing, also known as DNA testing, allows the genetic diagnosis of vulnerabilities to inherited diseases, and can also be used to determine a child's parentage (genetic mother and father) or in general a person's ancestry or biological relationship between people. In addition to studying chromosomes to the level of individual genes, genetic testing in a broader sense includes biochemical tests for the possible presence of genetic diseases, or mutant forms of genes associated with increased risk of developing genetic disorders. Genetic testing identifies changes in chromosomes, genes, or proteins.[1] The variety of genetic tests has expanded throughout the years. In the past, the main genetic tests searched for abnormal chromosome numbers and mutations that lead to rare, inherited disorders. Today, tests involve analyzing multiple genes to determine the risk of developing certain more common diseases such as heart disease and cancer.[2] The results of a genetic test can confirm or rule out a suspected genetic condition or help determine a person's chance of developing or passing on a genetic disorder. Several hundred genetic tests are currently in use, and more are being developed.[3][4]

Because genetic mutations can directly affect the structure of the proteins they code for, testing for specific genetic diseases can also be accomplished by looking at those proteins or their metabolites, or looking at stained or fluorescent chromosomes under a microscope.[5]

This article focuses on genetic testing for medical purposes. DNA sequencing, which actually produces a sequences of As, Cs, Gs, and Ts, is used in molecular biology, evolutionary biology, metagenomics, epidemiology, ecology, and microbiome research.

Genetic testing is "the analysis of chromosomes (DNA), proteins, and certain metabolites in order to detect heritable disease-related genotypes, mutations, phenotypes, or karyotypes for clinical purposes."[6] It can provide information about a person's genes and chromosomes throughout life. Genetic engineering is the process of removing a gene from one organism and putting it into another. Often, the removed genes are put into bacteria or yeast cells so that scientists can study the gene or the protein it produces more easily. Sometimes, genes are put into a plant or an animal.

One of the first genetic engineering advances involved the hormone insulin. Diabetes, a medical condition that affects millions of people, prevents the body from producing enough insulin necessary for cells to properly absorb sugar. Diabetics used to be treated with supplementary insulin isolated from pigs or cows. Although this insulin is very similar to human insulin, it is not identical. Bovine insulin is antigenic in humans. Antibodies produced against it would gradually destroy its efficacy.

Scientists got around the problem by putting the gene for human insulin into bacteria. The bacteria's cellular machinery, which is identical to the cellular machinery of all living things, "reads" the gene, and turns it into a protein-human insulin-through a process called translation.

Many human diseases are caused by defective genes.

All of these diseases are caused by a defect at a single gene locus. (The inheritance is recessive so both the maternal and paternal copies of the gene must be defective.) Is there any hope of introducing functioning genes into these patients to correct their disorder? Probably.

Other diseases also have a genetic basis, but it appears that several genes must act in concert to produce the disease phenotype. The prospects of gene therapy in these cases seems far more remote.

It is a disease of young children because, until recently, the absence of an immune system left them prey to infections that ultimately killed them.

Once the virus has infected the target cells, this RNA is reverse transcribed into DNA and inserted into the chromosomal DNA of the host.

The first attempts at gene therapy for SCID children (in 1990), used their own T cells (produced following ADA-PEG therapy) as the target cells.

In June of 2002, a team of Italian and Israeli doctors reported on two young SCID patients that were treated with their own blood stem cells that had been transformed in vitro with a retroviral vector carrying the ADA gene. After a year, both children had fully-functioning immune systems (T, B, and NK cells) and were able to live normal lives without any need for treatment with ADA-PEG or immune globulin (IG). The doctors attribute their success to first destroying some of the bone marrow cells of their patients to "make room" for the transformed cells.

Nine years later (August 2011) these two patients are still thriving and have been joined by 28 other successfully-treated children most of whom no longer need to take ADA-PEG.

Gene therapy has also succeeded for 20 baby boys who suffered from another form of severe combined immunodeficiency called X-linked SCID because it is caused by a mutated X-linked gene encoding a subunit called c (gamma-c) of the receptor for several interleukins, including interleukin-7 (IL-7).

IL-7 is essential for converting blood stem cells into the progenitors of T cells. [View]. Boys with X-linked SCID can make normal B cells, but because B cells need T-helper cells to function, these boys could make neither cell-mediated nor antibody-mediated immune responses and had to live in a sterile bubble before their treatment.

Abortion clinics were originally set up with the intention of slowing the population growth of Afro-Americans and others racial groups considered mentally or otherwise inferior.

Margaret Sanger's Planned Parenthood is the major force behind the abortion and pro-choice/abortion movement in America. If you are proud of being pro-choice, you should know more about the most responsible person for the pro-abortion-rights movement and abortion industry in the 20th century.

"Lothrop Stoddard was on the board of directors (of Margaret Sanger's Population Association of America) for years.... He had an interview with Adolf Hitler and was very impressed. His book, The Rising Tide of Color Against White World Supremacy, was written while he served on Sanger's board. Havelock Ellis, one of Sanger's extra-marital lovers, reviewed this..book favorably in The Birth Control Review".

At a March,1925 international birth control gathering in New York City, a speaker warned of the menace posed by the "black" and "yellow" peril. The man was not a Nazi or Klansman; he was Dr. S. Adolphus Knopf, a member of Margaret Sanger's American Birth Control League (ABCL), which along with other groups eventually became known as Planned Parenthood.

Margaret Sanger's beliefs about social works of charity are revealing: She criticized the success-- not failure-- of charity... She called for the halt to the medical care being given to slum mothers, and decried the expense to the taxpayers of monies being spent on the deaf, blind and dependent. She condemned foreign missionaries for reducing the infant mortality rates in developing countries, and declared charity to be more evil than for the assistance it provided to the poor and needy. Sanger's thinking moved to fascism in an elitist attitude that presumes to judge who is worthy to live and to die.

Brian Harold May, CBE (born 19 July 1947) is an English musician, singer, songwriter, and astrophysicist who achieved international fame as the lead guitarist of the rock band Queen. Queen was formed in London in 1970, originally consisting of Freddie Mercury (lead vocals, piano), May (guitar, vocals), John Deacon (bass guitar), and Roger Taylor (drums, vocals). May also served as Queen's backing vocalist.

In Queen's three-part vocal harmonies, May was generally the lower-range backing vocals. What is Agnosticism? A Short Explanation

So, what is the definition of agnosticism? Some imagine that agnosticism is an alternative to atheism, but those people have typically bought into the mistaken notion of the single, narrow definition of atheism. Strictly speaking, agnosticism is about knowledge, and knowledge is a related but separate issue from belief, the domain of theism and atheism.

A means without and gnosis means knowledge. Hence, agnostic: without knowledge, but specifically without knowledge of gods.

It may be technically correct, but rare, to use the word in reference to any other knowledge as well, for example: I am agnostic about whether O.J. Simpson actually killed his ex-wife.

Despite such possible usages, it remains the case that the term agnosticism is used fairly exclusively with respect to a single issue: do any gods exist or not? Those who disclaim any such knowledge or even that any such knowledge is possible are properly labeled agnostics. Everyone who claims that such knowledge is possible or that they have such knowledge might be called gnostics (note the lowercase g).

Here gnostics is not referring to the religious system known as Gnosticism, but rather the sort of person who claims to have knowledge about the existence of gods. Because such confusion may come easily and because there is generally little call for such a label, it is unlikely that you will ever see it used; it is only presented here as a contrast to help explain agnosticism.

Confusion about agnosticism commonly arises when people assume that agnosticism actually just means that a person is undecided about whether or not a god exists, and also that atheism is limited to strong atheism the assertion that no gods do or can exist.

Just because the world is talking about a Ronda Rousey vs. Cristiane Justino "super fight" (guilty as charged), doesn't mean it's any closer to actually happening. Still, it's hard not to wonder if the mainstream exposure (like this) won't be enough to finally get the deal done.

Thechamp goes up, thechallenger comes down, whatever ... let's just make it happen.

With that in mind, the sportsbooks have already set an opening line for "Rousey vs. Cyborg" and not surprisingly -- based on the Brazilian'sconsiderable might -- the line is as close as it has ever been for a "Rowdy" fight. In fact, the last time the Judoka was sporting a gap this narrow was her Strikeforce title fight against Miesha Tate.

Rousey opened at -245 against +197 for Justino, according toBest Fight Odds.

That line has since changed (see the current oddsat Bovada here) but is likely to hold steady until this fight inches closer to becoming a reality. Rousey (12-0) mustfirst face Miesha Tate -- where she's a 10/1 favorite -- while Justino (14-1) needs to finish up her work for Invicta FC.

Until then, all we can do is wait.

The longer we do, the more difficult it will become to make a profit on Rousey. But if you're a "Cyborg" fan with some extra coin, better to let that number balloon up. The bigger she is as an underdog, the more money she'll bring you with an upset victory.

Cyborg threatens Ronda Rousey with lawsuit as talk heats …

Ronda Rousey may never face Cristiane Cyborg Justino in the Octagon, but theyre already squaring off in a heated battle of words.

A Rousey-Cyborg fight has long been talked about, but nothing has materialized, partly because Justino would have to get down to Rouseys 135-pound bantamweight level. Talk about the dream UFC fight was stoked by Rouseys 34-second title win over Bethe Correia over the weekend and Rousey managed to both dampen and increase it by firing a shot at Justino.

Im prepared to deal with anything, thats why Im the champion, Rousey said after her victory in Rio de Janeiro. I fight in the UFC, in the 135-pound division. She can fight at 145 pumped full of steroids or she can make the weight just like everybody else without them.

Thems fightin words for Justino, who did test positive for an anabolic steroid after scoring a knockout win as the Strikeforce featherweight champion in December 2011. Cyborg blamed the result on a diet supplement given to her by a former coach and has not failed random tests lately.

Justino threatened Rousey with legal action, tweeting that she passes the same tests as Rousey.

To be a champion, I think you have to see the big picture, Justino wrote Sunday on Instagram. Its not about winning and losing; its about hard work every day and about thriving on the challenge. Its about embracing the pain that youll experience at the end of the race and not being afraid. I think people think too hard and get afraid of a certain challenge.

Rouseys comment wasnt so much a shot as it was part or a barrage about Justino. In a prefight interview with Yahoo, she said: If [Justino] can make 145 [pounds] all pumped full of steroids, you can get off the juice and fight in the division everybody else is in. I dont see why I should be under pressure to prove something against her when shes the one that has to prove something. Shes the one that has to prove that shes not a fraud.

It might be a popular fight, but it isnt likely to happen soon. For one thing, Justino has never fought at 135; Rousey has competed at 145, but UFC doesnt have that division.

And, after Rouseys victory over Correia, it seemed more likely that Rousey would fight Miesha Tate for the third time in December at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Tex. After that, Rousey has a movie commitment. It is, as UFC President Dana White said over the weekend, not easy.

The Cyborg thing is complicated, because everybody is ready to go, White said. Im ready for Cyborg. Ronda is ready for Cyborg. Everybody is ready for that fight, but Cyborg has to make the weight.

Federal health reform uses a "building blocks" approach that starts with the health insurance system we currently have in place in the United States. Health reform builds upon our current health insurance system to provide more people with access to health insurance coverage, establish legal protections for consumers, and set up mechanisms for consumers to shop knowledgeably for insurance.

States, including New York, have a role in health reform. For example, states have the option to set up their own health insurance exchange. For the most part, federal health reform establishes a "floor, not ceiling," allowing states to provide protections greater than those established under federal law. This is good news for New York, which already provides strong consumer protections, such as open enrollment and community rating that ensures access to health insurance coverage without regard to age, sex, health status and occupation. New York will work in partnership with the federal government to implement the federal law and coordinate it with New York law. States also provided input to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services in developing guidance in a number of areas including consumer assistance and the review and disclosure of premium rate adjustments.

In 2011, the New York State Legislature passed and Governor Cuomo signed A8460/S5800, which updates the State's Insurance and Public Health Laws with the federal health care reform law's provisions regarding health insurance policies and contracts.

As of the census[10] of 2000, there were 61,610 people, 19,383 households, and 15,138 families residing in the county. The population density was 119 people per square mile (46/km). There were 21,977 housing units at an average density of 42 per squaremile (16/km). The racial makeup of the county was 46.64% White, 42.84% Black or African American, 0.52% Native American, 1.76% Asian, 0.43% Pacific Islander, 4.43% from other races, and 3.37% from two or more races. 8.15% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

According to 2005 Census Estimates Liberty County had a population that was 44.5% African-American, 44.4% Non-Hispanic white, 7.2% Latino, 3.1% non-Hispanics who reported multiple races, 1.9% Asian and 0.5% of both Native Americans and Pacific Islanders.

There were 19,383 households out of which 50.50% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.60% were married couples living together, 14.80% had a female householder with no husband present, and 21.90% were non-families. 16.60% of all households were made up of individuals and 3.20% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.93 and the average family size was 3.29.

In the county the population was spread out with 32.00% under the age of 18, 17.90% from 18 to 24, 33.90% from 25 to 44, 12.20% from 45 to 64, and 3.90% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 25 years. For every 100 females there were 111.30 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 115.10 males.

The median income for a household in the county was $33,477, and the median income for a family was $35,031. Males had a median income of $25,305 versus $20,765 for females. The per capita income for the county was $13,855. About 13.50% of families and 15.00% of the population were below the poverty line, including 19.20% of those under age 18 and 19.90% of those age 65 or over.

Bart Starr had quite a meal Tuesday morning in Alabama three pancakes and an omelet with three eggs and cheese.

It was made by his wife Cherry, his bride of 61 years. And it didnt take him long to eat it.

He fed himself the entire breakfast, Cherry Starr said. It was great.

It was another small but significant moment for Starr, the legendary former Green Bay Packers quarterback. Before he underwent an experimental stem cell treatment in June, Starr, 81, could barely walk or feed himself. His condition had deteriorated after suffering a heart attack, two strokes and a four seizures in September.

But now he can walk and eat unaided, seemingly sparked back to his feet with the help of this treatment.

Its just been really exciting to witness, Cherry Starr told USA TODAY Sports. Some of it might have been natural. It might have happened without the stem cells to some degree. But theres no question that has absolutely helped him, and some of his cognition has improved rather dramatically really. He can do things like tie his shoes. Hes feeding himself. He can read. I could go on and on about a lot of things that were witnessing that are really, really exciting to us.

She said Starr received an infusion of 90 million stem cells in June, when he traveled to the San Diego area for treatment. During the trip, they also met with two other sports heroes who previously received similar treatments: hockey great Gordie Howe, 87, and former San Francisco 49ers quarterback John Brodie, 79.
