Three years ago, University of Minnesota professor Bin He developed a brain-controlled drone.

Engineering students across the country now build them for fun, and Hes got a brain-controlled robot arm that can be wielded through the power of thought. A student guinea pig wearing a cap outfitted with sensors tracking the brains electrical impulses need only imagine moving the arm, and the arm complies.

He describes the innovation in practiced laymans terms. Imagine you need to locate a small ship in a storm, but theres a heavy dome of bad weather over the ocean. How are you supposed to pick up the rescue signals? His challenge was to develop a technology to pinpoint the brains electrical signals so perfectly that specific commands can be decoded through the thick plates of skull and hair.

The even-keeled professor is humbly expository when he talks about his groundbreaking achievement. He only becomes flushed when he imagines its possibilities.

There are several large classes of patients whose lives could change with further development of robot limbs: people with spinal cord injuries, stroke patients whose brains require rehab, and amputees who have lost body parts to war. Hes robot arm represents the hope of regaining full ability and independence.

Hes discoveries are just the latest in a 30-year career in pushing boundaries, which began when he was a high schooler in China, reading about an MIT professors pioneering research of the brains magnetic field in Science magazine. The idea that humans could pick up a tiny magnetic signal generated by the brain blew his mind. He was convinced that exciting things were happening in the United States.

Thirty years later, He is already dreaming 30 years into the future again. Advances in thought-controlled robots have the potential to transform human ability as we know it.

A robot arm mounted on a table could help a paralyzed patient feed himself. It could also help an able-bodied person cook dinner while doing laundry, or hold a cup of coffee and a bagel for a driver with two hands on the wheel. People could think lights on and off.

A lot of things we are skeptical of now, and 30 years later it will become the reality, He says. Every project I train a team of students to tackle the cutting-edge research, to learn things by doing things that have never been done before. Its not to teach them knowledge, but really to teach them the capability to discover knowledge.

San Diego Futurist Imagines End Of Personal Privacy – KPBS

When President Trump's advisor Kellyanne Conway used the term "alternate facts" to describe a falsehood about the inauguration turnout, a lot of people began hearing echoes of a 20th Century literary masterpiece.

George Orwell's "1984" alerted readers to the dangers of modern autocratic surveillance and "newspeak," a language that could no longer refer to opposing political ideas. Conways's comments led to a spike in demand for the book.

Now a new compilation of short stories takes Orwell's concept of "Big Brother" one step further. What happens when technological advances let us see and hear almost everything about the people around us? Will we become a society of "Little Brothers", constantly watching each other?

Science fiction writer and futurist David Brin co-edited the collection, called "Chasing Shadows: Visions of Our Coming Transparent World." Unlike most dystopian fiction, he wanted the stories to consider what happens when information floods the world, but citizens share in the power, not just government.

"If light floods everywhere, what happens to neighbors? Will we develop habits to leave people alone? Will shy people be able to even survive?" Brin said. "A lot of the stories are about fighting back."

UC San Diego literature professor Stephen Potts co-edited "Chasing Shadows." He and Brin join KPBS Midday Edition on Thursday with more on what could happen in a society without privacy.

Elon Musk Has Released Photos of His Underground Tunnels – Futurism

Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, has been moving quickly on the development of what he calls The Boring Company.In January of last year, he presenteda proposal at the Hyperloop Pod Competition for a company that would lighten traffic through the use of underground tunnels. One year later, Musk mentioned that construction of a tunnel could begin in Los Angeles by the end of February.

Musk hasnt fallen short of his promise his new boring machine began to dig a tunnel as part of a demonstration at SpaceXs Hyperloop Pod Competition last weekend. Although the machine has only created a mere hole, his team plans to eventually construct a full-fledged tunnel.

Musk hasntbeen too clear about how the tunnel will function, but the Hyperloop could be involved after, it is supposed to be able to work above or below ground. Musk has, at the very least, not denied the connection:

For those that are curious enough to see what Musks boring machine looks like, he released a photo of it on Twitter recently. This might be only one part of a massive machine without the cutting head attached.

Although tunneling machines already exist, Musks company would be unique because the machines would make tunneling faster, speeding up the digging process almost tenfold compared to conventional methods. If Musks boring machine can make tunneling quicker and easier, underground transit could also become more popular. Tunnels would be a solution to heavy traffic, especially in urban areas, as well as a potential way to bring transportation into buildings.

Musk isnt exactly serious about creating a separate entity called The Boring Company. Thankfully, the project fits into Teslas mission to alleviate traffic which, in turn, will reduce fuel consumption and emissions.

His boring machine is also in line with SpaceXs mission to eventually settle a colony on Mars. It could be used to test the viability of tunnel construction on the Red Planet, creating underground habitats that would protect people from extreme cold, low pressure, and high radiation.

One Hacker Just Took Down a Fifth of the Dark Web – Futurism

You Have Been Hacked

On Saturday, the notoriousdark web had over 10,000 of its secret and shady websites seized by an Anonymous-linked hacker. The person claiming responsibility for this hack said it was a vigilante move that was accomplished by targeting a dark web hosting service called Freedom Hosting II.

Initially, I didnt want to take down FH2, just look through it, the hacker told Motherboard in an email sent from the same address posted to the hacked Freedom Hosting II sites. The hack was initiated after the hacker discovered that the service was hosting child pornography websites. Thats when I decided to take it down instead, they claimed.Each site hosted by the service had its content replaced by a message from the hacker.

The hack, supposedly, wasnt very complicated, and according the person responsible, this was their first attempt at hacking. This is, in fact, my first hack ever, the hacker said.I just had the right idea. All they needed was control over a new or already existing site. From there, it was just a matter of changing a configuration file, triggering a reset password, and getting root access. The hacker said that they were able to infiltrate the system with just read-only access as early as January 30.

The ominous-sounding moniker dark webis fairly fitting given the nature of many of the websites that comprise it. This space on the internet is home to some of the most nefariouswebsites there are, like the infamous Silk Road and other sites similar to it, some of which are marketplaces for child pornography, black market guns, illegal drugs, and even assassins-for-hire. Inaccessible using traditional browsers, those who want to explore the dark web mustuse special software to access it.

This hack takes out a full 20 percent of those sites, and by the looks of things, the hacker seems to be responsibly handling the files they seized. They released a dump of system files but without including user data, and they also plan to give copies to a security researcher. That person will be the one to deliver them to government officials.

The hacker considers this an achievement in the crusade against the internets scum. Asked ifthey would do it again in the future,the hacker replied,If there is ever going to be a chance like that again, I wont say no to taking them down, but I do not plan to do so.

Republican Representatives Propose A Bill to Abolish The EPA – Futurism

Itstarted withremoving mentions of climate change on the WhiteHouse website, and now we are looking at an outright dissolution. Since Donald Trumps inauguration, the governments support of scientists and administrative organizations combating climate change (and protecting the environment) has dramatically decreased.

Case in point, on Friday February 3, Republican Florida congressman Matt Gaetz presented the billH.R.861, which would eliminate the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Not wanting to beat around the bush, the bill is actually called the bill to terminate the Environmental Protection Agency a pretty straightforward name that shows how the winds are changing in Washington.

The EPA is the federal agency that monitors and implements policies that protectour environment. Gaetz and fellow Republican representatives (who co-sponsored H.R.861) do not feel that this agency is necessary.

Kentucky representative Thomas Massie stated that The EPA makes rules that undermine the voice of the American people and threaten jobs in Kentucky. The bills authors believe that removing the EPA would move oversight and regulation from the federal government to individual states, which they feel already have the resources necessary to protect our environment.

Experts disagree with this move. A lot of states just dont have resources available to them, said professor Mary Jane Angelo, director of the Environmental and Land Use Law Program at the University of Florida Levin College of Law. Wealthier states would have better protection for their citizens health than poorer states.

But as the quote above makes clear, the thrust is really on placing jobs before the environment, so even if all states did have the necessary resources, it is clear that many states do not have the dedication or the will toprotect our environment.

However, EPA or No EPA, human-made climate change remains part of our daily reality, a reality which is progressively worsening.

Earths temperatures have been consistently warming. Despite political pushback from those who deny climate change, the actual effects of anthropogenic (manmade) climate change continue. From aberrant hurricanes and typhoons the world overto the extinction of several species, human-made climate change cannot be denied.

The details of H.R.861 remain unknown, as the text is still unavailable; however, the Walton Sunreports that the bill offers nothing new in the way of guidance, and according to Massie, 2018 will be the end of the EPA.

Hopefully, this will not happen, because if it is not yet obvious to some howthreatening human-made climate change is, it will become apparent all too soon.

If you havent noticed, the Super Bowl LI is trending on social media the Patriots won in overtime and Lady Gaga impressed during halftime. But the pop superstar wasnt the only one that lit up the night Intel literally did so with 300 drones thatmoved behind Lady Gaga as she sangon the stadiums roof.

The Intel Shooting Star drone is the companys first drone created for entertainment light shows, says Anil Nanduri, VP for Intels New Technology Group. Weve also worked with the FAA to receive a Part 107 Waiver to fly these drones as a fleet with one pilot at night in the U.S.

These Shooting Star dronesare actually quite simple. They use a desktop software suite of programs, allowing them to follow a pre-programmed route. The software also keeps the drones form colliding with one another, as they dont have hardware to detect collisions, nor do they communicate directly with each other.

Each of Intels drones can be assembled in less than 15 minutes.There are no screws and everything snaps together. They have a large, multicolored LED light on the bottom, are encased in a styrofoam housing, and weigh about the same as a volleyball. Currently, Intel uses these drones to conduct fantastic, well-coordinated light shows in the night sky. Intel says these are near-limitless in its scale they re able to control more than 10,000 drones at a time.

In the future, Intel hopes that this fleet drone technology will find other applications beyond that of entertainment. As Josh Walden, senior VP and GM at the New Technology Group said: The potential for these light show drones is endless, and we hope this experience inspires other creatives, artists and innovators to really think about how they can incorporate drone technology in new ways that have yet to even be thought of.

These drones, combined with Intels other proprietary technologies, could even be used in search and rescue operations, or for industrial inspection. Intels leaders are positioning the company to provide the compute, sensor, communications, and cloud integration for the growing drone ecosystem, the company notes.

Last year, Elon Musk released the second half of his Master Plan, which was strongly anchored in creating a more sustainable future for our planet. It included plans to create a solar roof with seamlessly integrated battery storage, improve driverless vehicles, and expand its electric-powered product line. Included in the last piece of the plan is the development of electric semi-trucks.

Today, Musk has assured the public via Twitter that Teslas semis are well on their way.

However, as the Tesla Semi becomes a reality, the Model 3, a new Tesla car design slated for a 2017 release with over 400,000 reservations behind it, remains Teslas priority. Nevertheless, despite the companys current main focus, the Tesla Semi is apparently already in early development work, reports Electrek.

One of the biggest challenges that Tesla might face in bringing these large, battery-powered trucks might be their size. So far, we have seen Teslas current technology work exceptionally well for compact cars and sedans. But modifying this technology for heavy trucks designed to carry cargo and drive long-distance means that Tesla will most likely have to significantly adjust charging mechanisms, drastically increase the energy-capacity of its batteries, and work to make the vehicle lighter overall. But, since Tesla is one of the most forward-thinking and innovative companies of our time, its probably only a matter of time before we see the inventive new ways that they will address these challenges.

Bill Nye: This is The Technology We Can Expect to Have 50 Years From Now – Futurism

Bill Nye, everyones favorite science guy, recently appeared on the youtube series Big Thinkto answer a very difficult question from a young engineering student: What technology can we expect to have 50 years from now? Thinking back 50 years from 2017, it would have been impossible to imagine in 1967 that we would soon have computers, cameras, calculators, and phones all in our pockets and that jetpacks and flying cars would be a reality. So this was a difficult question to answer.

Bill spoke at length about the crossroads we find ourselves approaching, and that what might have been easy to predict before is now much more challenging. However, he hopes that in 50 years, at least 80% of our energy will be made using renewable resources. He also thinks that almost all cars will be both autonomous self-driving vehicles and powered by electricity. And while he discussed the grim possibilities of our future, he recognized that the progressive influence of younger generations can give us hope.

Though rising automation makes some fear job loss, many believe that if a universal basic income is implemented alongside these growing developments in automation, companies and citizens alike would benefit.

According to Bill Nye, either, in the next decade orfifteen years, the US becomes the world leader in renewable technologies or the US just continues to divide the rich and the poor and global climate change gets stronger and stronger and the ocean gets bigger and bigger as it gets warmer and the quality of life for a lot of people goes down. Well see.

China is Now the Biggest Producer of Solar Energy in the World – Futurism

China has proven that it is, in fact, very serious about its intentions to lessen dependence on coal. According to Chinas National Energy Administration (NEA), the country has more than doubled its solar energy production in 2016making them the biggest producer of solar energy (in terms of capacity) in the world

By the end of last year, China hit 77.42 gigawatts, which generated 66.2 billion kilowatt-hours of power. While significant, the figure is relatively small given Chinas massive population. And being the worlds biggest industrial nation, this only accounted for one percent of the countrys total power generation. However, given that China is looking to significantly boost its use of renewable power, that number will hopefully increase in the years to come.

Following NEAs development plan and energy goals, the country is working towards adding over 110 gigawatts of capacity by 2020. With continued focus and effort, they hope to increase their use of renewable power from 11 percent to 20 percent by 2030.

Transitioning to renewable energy will require a significant investment from China, but its an investment that China is clearly ready to make. In fact, the country has already allotted $364 billion (2.5 trillion yuan) towards this vision. Since China is such a large producer with such a massive population, this large step towards sustainability will have a tremendous impact. With the ever-progressing repercussions of climate change upon us, efforts like this are what make a green future possible.

Elon Musk Has Officially Started Building A Tunnel Under Los Angeles – Futurism

When Elon Musk said he will bore through traffic, he meant it. The Tesla and SpaceX founder and CEO is serious about digging a tunnel into and through Los Angeles, and he has completed a boring test drive, so to speak, at the SpaceX headquarters in LA. Workers dug a test trench 30 feet wide, 50 feet long, and 15 feet deep this past weekend, which Musk called the beginning of an experiment.

Musks boring project began with a couple of tweets complaining about traffic in L.A. Now, it looks like the project is as concretely real as Tesla cars or SpaceX rockets, with work expected to begin sometime next month. His vision: to make human beings an inter-tunnel species.

You have tall buildings, theyre all 3D, and then everyone wants to go into the building and leave the building at a same time, he said Sunday, speaking at a Hyperloop design competition at SpaceX.. On a 2D road network, that obviously doesnt work, so you have to go 3D either up or down. And I think probably down.

With the progression of Musks plans come improvements of tunnel-building technology. Were just going to figure out what it takes to improve tunneling speed by, I think, somewhere between 500 and 1,000 percent, he said Sunday.We have no idea what were doingI want to be clear about that. Just as Musk improved electric cars and reusable rockets, he wants to improve the way that we build tunnels. Speaking to Wired, Musk said, better tunneling tech improves everything: road, subway, Hyperloop.

Since Los Angeles is the most congested city in the U.S., surely they might appreciate, or at least be open to, Musks solution. Of course, however, there will be many legal, logistical, and even environmental hurdles to overcome before the digging will begin underneath L.A.

The obstacles between this idea and the reality of a tunnel system in L.A. cant be helped. However, Roads are basically the only infrastructure we have that we experience daily shortages of, according to urban planning student Michael Manville at the University of California, Los Angeles. And so, while there will be a lot of work to set this plan in motion, it could revolutionizetransportation.

Worker Freedom Extends to Missouri – Competitive Enterprise Institute (blog)

Today, Missouri became the 28th state to enact right-to-work legislation, which prohibits forced payment of union duesas a condition of employment. Right-to-work laws increase worker choice and research finds they have a positive economic impact.

Primarily, these laws are about increasing worker freedom. No individual should be forced to financially support an organization with which they disagree, or be penalized for refusing todoso. Without right-to-work laws on the books, that is exactly what happens.

Economic benefits also accompany the passage of right-to-work laws. For example, research produced here atthe Competitive Enterprise Institute shows:

Given their benefits to workers and the economy, the popularity of right-to-work laws is no surprise. Survey after survey show that a majority of the public supports giving workers the choice whether or not to pay union dues. Most recently, a May 2015 poll conducted by the Missouri Alliance for Freedomfound that 54 percent of Missourians support right to work, with 35 percent opposed and 11 percent undecided.

However, some free-market leaning organizations criticize right-to-work laws because they interfere with freedom of contract. They claim that employers and unions should be able to agree to union security agreements that require every worker pay union fees whether they want union representation or not. In a system based on freedom to contract, employers and unions should be able to force workers to pay dues. However, a vast majority of these criticisms of right-to-work laws fail to mention that true freedom of contract would also allow employers to completely reject unionization at their establishment, even if every single worker voted to form a union.

There is zero chance in the near to long term future that a system as described above will be implemented.

In the meantime, right-to-work laws that increase worker freedom are preferable to forced unionism laws that force workers to pay for union representation they do not want.

As I wrote previously, Missouri workers deserve the freedom to choose how to spend their hard-earned pay. Enacting right to work in Missouri would give workers that ability, and send a signal to citizens and taxpayers that worker freedom takes priority over the special interests of labor unions.

UN Gay Rights Envoy: Religious Freedom ‘Not an Absolute Right’ – Breitbart News

In a recent public consultation, the UNs newly appointed independent expert on the defense of LGTB rights, Vitit Muntarbhorn, said that negative moral judgments on homosexual activity were a recent phenomenon, stemming from colonial law.

More recently, in colonial law, or remnants of colonial law, gays were criminalized, are criminalized, even though beforehand they were not criminalized, he claimed during the Jan. 25 conference.

When challenged about the clash between LGBT rights and religious freedom by Henk Jan van Schothorst of the Transatlantic Christian Council, Muntarbhorn said that religious freedom is not absolute and must yield to homosexual rights.

There are some absolute rights, he said in apparent reference to LGBT rights, but there are some that are not absolute. He went on to explain that freedom of expression and expression of religion are not absolute rights and that they can be curtailed when necessary.

While praising a desire to engage with the heart of religion, Muntarbhorn said this should be done without the mythology overriding the heart of the religion.

The independent expert also emphasized the role of education so children can be born and bred from a young age with the right attitudes toward sexual orientation and identity, a practice that some have denounced as indoctrination or even gender ideology or ideological colonization.

Last summer, the UN Human Rights Council approved the appointment of an independent expert on the defense of the LGTB collective, and in October the Council chose Vitit Muntarbhorn of Thailand to fill the post.

The following month, a coalition of 54 African states challenged the legality of the appointment, asking that his mandate be put on hold. They submitted a resolution calling for the suspension of the UNs LGBT investigator, noting that gender identity and sexual orientation have no place in international human rights instruments.

While Muntarbhorn has been tasked with assessing implementations of existing international human rights law and raising awareness of violence and discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI), critics suggest that his very mandate will constitute interference with the laws of many UN countries.

Seventy-three countries worldwide, and almost 40 percent of all UN member states, currently have anti-sodomy laws on their books. In Africa alone, 33 states have laws making homosexual acts a crime, including Uganda, Nigeria, Sudan and Mauritania.

Speaking on behalf of the African nations, Botswanas ambassador told a General Assembly human rights committee in November that African nations are alarmed that the Human Rights Council is delving into national matters and attempting to focus on people on the grounds of their sexual interests and behaviors.

Ambassador Charles Ntwaagae said that the Council had no business looking into sexual orientation and gender identity, which are notoriously absent from the United Nations charter document, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Those two notions are not and should not be linked to existing international human rights instruments, said Ntwaagae. The UN has never adopted an official position regarding putative rights of gender identity or sexual orientation, though it does guarantee the rights of life, liberty, security, property and equal protection to all persons without distinction.

We therefore call for the suspension of the activities of the appointed independent expert pending the determination of this issue, said Ntwaagae.

The Africa group claimed that a focus on homosexual rights also takes attention away from other issues of paramount importance, such as racism and the right to development.

Showing no sign he would give himself up to the U.S., WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange reportedly begged the United Kingdom and Sweden to "do the right thing andrestore my liberty" Monday, claiming he deserves freedom.

Assange has been holed up for more than four years at the Ecuadorian Embassy in London. He has refused to meet prosecutors in Sweden, where he remains wanted on rape accusations.

He spoke out one year after a United Nations group found the U.K. and Sweden were "arbitrarily" detaining him. Assange argued,"These two states signed treaties to recognise the U.N. and its human rights mechanisms,"the BBC reported.

British officials previously said the finding from the U.N.'sWorking Group on Arbitrary Detention "changes nothing."

Last month, Assange raised eyebrows across the Internet when heappeared to offer himself upas a kind of swap for ChelseaManning, the former private convicted of leaking the hundreds of thousands of documents that made WikiLeaks a household name. The group made its offer to then-President Barack Obama.

"If Obama grants Manning clemency Assange will agree to US extradition despite clear unconstitutionality of DoJ case," WikiLeaks tweeted, apparently referring to the U.S. Department of Justice's continuing investigation into the radical transparency website. But when Obama granted clemency to the ex-Army analyst a week later, setting a May release date that lops almost 30 years off her sentence, Assange's lawyers said it wasn't enough.

"There's no question that what President Obama did is not what Assange was seeking," said Barry Pollack, who represents the WikiLeaks chief in the United States. "Mr. Assange was saying that Chelsea should never have been prosecuted, never have been sentenced to decades in prison, and should have been released immediately."

Melinda Taylor, who also represents Assange, agreed, saying in an email that clemency was "far short of what Mr. Assange asked for and what Ms. Manning deserved (which is to be pardoned and freed immediately)."

Neither supplied any evidence that Assange had used the words "immediate" or "pardon" in relation to his extradition offer, but Pollack said it was clear that was what Assange meant noting that the Australian computer expert had previously pushed for Manning's pardon.

"Why would he be called for Manning's release in a few months from now?" Pollack said. "You can parse his tweets any way that you want to parse them. I think his position has been clear throughout."

WASHINGTON, Feb. 6, 2017 The United States will stand with those who stand in the defense of freedom, President Donald J. Trump told service members at MacDill Air Force Base, Florida, today.

The president visited U.S. Central Command and U.S. Special Operations Command personnel and received briefings from Army Gen. Joseph L. Votel and Army Gen. Raymond Thomas.

The two commands work hand-in-hand to protect America and its vital interests. Special Operations Command has a worldwide mission. U.S. Central Command is especially focused on the threats emanating from the Middle East and Central Asia.

Gratitude

Trump visited the base to express his and the nations gratitude to the men and women of the commands. He also wanted to recognize the military families and spouses who shoulder the burdens of war. I want every military family in this country to know that our administration is at your service, he said. We stand with you 100 percent. Dublin city councillors have passeda motion to grant the Freedom of the City to former US president Barack Obama and his wife, theformer first lady Michelle.

Proposing the motion Lord Mayor Cllr Brendan Carr (Lab) said the honour was to recognise Mr Obama's "moderating and progressive" influence on the world stage.

It was also to acknowledge the work of Mrs Obama in access for women to education and her campaigning on behalf of refugees.

The Lord Mayor said Mr Obama's progressive path was in stark contrast to the "concerning trajectory" of the present incumbent who he said was making the world a more "xenophobic, intolerant and unstable place".

The motion was carried without debate by 30 votes in favour with 23 against and 3 abstentions.

Lord Mayor Carr confirmed that Mr and Mrs Obama had confirmed through contacts that they would be happy to accept the Freedom of Dublin.

He also said that they see it as the perfect opportunity for another visit to Ireland.

A meeting will be heldwith US Embassy officials within days and the Lord Mayor said he is hoping that a visit could be organised by the end of the year.

Earlier, he told councillors that there is precedent for a couple to receive the honour as it was granted to the Crown Prince and Princess of Japan in 1985 for their diplomatic activities.

Councillors from People Before Profit and the Anti-Austerity Alliance parties had opposed the motion and tried unsuccessfully to debate the issue.

The Lord Mayor said that Mr Obama had regretted some US actions in the Middle East and said the honour was not a "canonisation" of the couple.

He said there was precedence in nominating international figures as Bill Clinton, Nelson Mandela and Aung San Suu Kyi had previously received the honour.

Mr and Mrs Obama visitedIreland in May 2011which included a visit tohis ancestral home in Moneygall, Co Offaly.

Around 20 per cent of all websites on the dark web were taken offline in a hack, with those responsible publishing details of the website administrators.

Freedom Hosting II, a site with 10,000 Tor-based webpages, was attacked after a hacker said child pornography was being hosted on the websites.

On Friday, visitors to any of the websites hosted by the firm saw the message: "Hello, Freedom Hosting II, you have been hacked." The statement explained that when the attacker was searching through Freedom Hosting II's database, they found 50 per cent of websites were "child porn" noting, "you host many scam sites".

The hack has been confirmed by security experts and a list of impacted websites was curated and posted online.

The attacker, who told Motherboard it was their first ever hack, also claimed to take 74GB of files and a 2.3GB database.

Since the breach, the Freedom Hosting II database has been made available on information sharing websites and been verified. Troy Hunt, whose Have I Been Pwned website holds more than two billion compromised online accounts, has been given the 2GB MySQL database and says it includes 381,000 email addresses.

Describing the data breach Hunt said it is a "pretty serious incident" and the database has backups from customers, including those running WordPress websites with the dark web host. "As you can imagine, a lot of the data is very explicit," he says.

Within the email addresses, Hunt says there are "thousands" of .gov addresses but cautions they may not be legitimate.

While the dark web is known to host child pornography and allow the sales of drugs and illegal services, it is also used by journalists and those wishing to avoid surveillance from oppressive regimes. It is likely the database of leaked email addresses affects those who use the anonymous browsing method for legal purposes.

Dark web and privacy researcher Sarah Jamie Lewis conducted a review of Freedom Hosting II in October 2016 and said she believed there were 1,500 to 2,000 active sites being hosted.

"FHII made it easy for people to start playing with anonymous publishing - and in doing so created a huge vulnerability," Lewis tweeted. "I have never been a fan of dark web hosting providers. The threat model there for everyone is ridiculously hard to secure."

Hunt also said the details included on the Freedom Hosting II are likely to have been collected by police and intelligence agencies. "Law enforcement will absolutely have this data, it's *very* public. It also obviously has many real email addresses in it".

An AFA spokesperson says people of faith need to continue urging the White House to sign a document on religious freedom.

An extensive presidential executive order has been proposed and circulated among federal agencies in Washington. It has also been leaked, and since then, LGBT activists have demanded that President Trump not sign it. But Sandy Rios, director of governmental affairs for the American Family Association, explains that it instructs the government to respect genuine religious freedom.

"It doesn't just deal with the freedom of worship. It is freedom of religion, expression of your faith in your practical life, in your business, in your work and how you do things -- that you should not be punished because you believe that marriage should be between one man and one woman, or that bathrooms should be assigned according to biological sex," Rios submits.

The proposed order warns the federal bureaucracy to do an about-face and show some respect.

"It instructs all the agencies of the federal government to permit federal employees to practice their faith without fear of punishment, to not worry about what they say if they're expressing their viewpoints," the governmental affairs director details. "It prevents the federal government from withholding contracts from people who hold religious conscience on LGBT issues."

OneNewsNow columnist Bryan Fischerdescribes the draft document as "a masterpiece ... stunningly and brilliantly crafted." But the White House has been so battered by LGBT activists opposed to it that the support of at least two highly-placed government officials appears to be weakening. So Rios urges people to contact the White House and encourage the president to sign the document.
