Reaffirming First Amendment: Photojournalist awarded settlement in … – imaging resource

A veteran photojournalist based in Washington D.C. has been awarded a settlement of $45,000 in a lawsuit against Maryland police. Mannie Garcia was arrested in 2011 in Montgomery County, Maryland for recording what he perceived to be an instance of excessive force being used by police against two men. Garcia, his wife and a friend were leaving a restaurant and saw two men being arrested and Garcia began capturing photos and videos of the incident. Police approached Garcia, questioning him, at which point Garcia identified himself as a member of the press. Nonetheless, Garcia was arrested.

Garcia alleges that the arresting officer put Garcia in a chokehold before dragging him across the street to the police cruiser. Garcia alleges also that he hit his head during the arrest. He was charged with disorderly conduct and lost his White House press credentials because of the arrest. During his trial in December of 2011, Garcia was acquitted but his memory card was not returned. A year later, Mannie filed a civil claim in federal court on the grounds that his First, Fourth and Fourteenth Amendment rights were violated. Garcias lawsuit claimed that he had been wrongfully and violently arrested.

In 2013, Montgomery County filed a motion to dismiss the case, but the U.S. Department of Justice argued on Garcias behalf. While the legal proceedings were ongoing, the Montgomery County police department changed its policies on people recording police activity on public property, reiterating that people have the right to capture images and video of officers. This policy is in line with several cases resolved in courts around the country, which have by and large ruled in favor of civilians First Amendment rights to record police on public property, provided they are not interfering.

In addition to the $45,000 settlement awarded to Garcia only days before the long-running case was scheduled for trial, he will be compensated for legal fees. While Garcias case did not have a groundbreaking result, it is important that police are held accountable for violating the rights of citizens. This latest settlement, in addition to the updated policies in Montgomery County, are certainly a win for photojournalists and other citizens.

Joplin (Mo.) district’s field trips to Christian center violated First Amendment – American School & University

A federal judge has ruled that the Joplin (Mo.) district violated students' First Amendment rights in 2015 when it took seventh- and eighth-graders on a field trip to a Christian-themed sports complex.

The Joplin Globe reports the court ruled in favor of the American Humanist Association, which sued the district on behalf of a parent of two students. The association had argued that the field trips to Victory Ministry and Sports Complex violated the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment.

Permission slips were sent home to parents to inform them that "their children may be invited to Bible studies and local churches while at Victory," the lawsuit said. The association argued that the permission slip "required parents to allow their child to participate in worship services, Bible studies or any other activities that may pertain to the Christian faith."

The school district asserted that the trip served a secular purpose rewarding students for positive standardized test scores and good behavior.

ButU.S. District Court Judge Douglas Harpoolconcluded in a 23-page summary judgment that some students could "feel coerced by the Joplin Districts field trips, into either not attending the events, or subjecting themselves to religious beliefs contrary to their familys teaching."

"The Court finds the relationship between Joplin District and Victory, and in particular the seventh and eighth grade field trips...to be an impermissible entanglement of government, government funding, and government authority with a particular religion and religious message," Harpool said in its ruling.

The relationship between a public school district and a religious entity was a clear violation of the First Amendment.

"The frequency, consistency, and extent of the relationship between the Joplin District and Victory goes well beyond occasional or incidental use and impermissibly entangles the Joplin District with religion," the judge said.

David Niose, Legal Director for the American Humanist Association, called the ruling a victory for the Constitution.

The school district has been funneling money and impressionable students to a religious ministry that is in the business of luring children to Christianity," Niose says, "and were glad that the court could see that this is clearly unconstitutional activity.

The judge has not yet imposed a final judgment and order, so it is not clearwhether any sanctions or penalties will be imposed on the district.

LETTER: Resident claims Burien’s Noise Ordinance violates First Amendment – The B-Town Blog (blog)

[EDITORS NOTE: The following is a Letter to the Editor, written by a Reader. It does not necessarily reflect the opinion of The B-Town Blog nor its staff:]

Honarable Mayor Lucy Krakowiak Councilman Austin Bell Burien City Council et al

Please present, for your consideration, at the next city council meeting.

In regards to; Minor Amendments to BMC Titles 9, 17 and 19,esp. 9.105.400 Noise.

(c) Yelling, shouting, whistling or singing on or near the public streets, particularly between the hours of 10:00 p.m. and 8:00 a.m. or at any time and place as to unreasonably disturb or interfere with the peace and comfort of owners or possessors of real property.

The text or at any time and place which negates the particularly between the hours of 10:00 p.m. and 8:00 a.m is a clear violation of the freedom of speech amendment to the constitution of the United States and should be struck.

Also, the term unreasonably disturb has not been clearly defined to decibel level or is the issue content driven? Both The National Endowments of the Arts and The Washington State Arts Commission supports street music and busking. What would New Orleans be without its street music? New York, to San Francisco has its revered street musicians. Seattle has its famous Pike Marketplace musicians. The Burien ordinance had no restrictions on street music. The laws must take into account all the citizens of Burien. This amendment appears to be placating to the comfort of owners or possessors of real property who are not sentient citizens, but merely property owners.

Street music is a demonstration that a city has musical culture and refinement. This change appears to be more than it is and is clear violation of the First Amendment which protects freedom of speech, the right to express any opinions without censorship or restraint. and that includes music.

Thank you for your time,

Sincerely, Joe Moldovan

What is Tor and how do I use it? – International Business Times UK

When the revelations about government mass surveillance were disclosed by NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden in 2013, the issue irrevocably changed how the world saw online privacy. Suddenly the general public started to think a lot more about how safe it is to post all their activities online, and to question how safe their data is on the internet.

One way many people now stay safe online is to make use of the Tor anonymising network.

The Tor anonymity network (named after The Onion Router project) consists of software that shields and redirects internet traffic through a worldwide network of relays. It is comprised of volunteers who set up their computers as Tor exit nodes, in order to offer at least three layers of encryption, whereby the source and the final destination of the Tor path is completely anonymised.

The network is used both by people who have privacy concerns and don't want governments and internet service providers (ISP) to be able to spy on their activities online, as well as by others who have nefarious purposes in mind for example, people who want to obtain firearms, narcotics and counterfeit goods from secret underground marketplaces on the Dark Web.

How do I use Tor?

It's fairly simple to get started with Tor. Simply go to the Tor Project website and download the Tor Browser here. The Tor Browser is available for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux, and it has been translated into 15 other popular languages besides English.

Step One: Select the Tor Browser in the language and operating system of your choice and click on the link in the table on the download page, then safe the file to your desktop.

Step Two: Install the software and make sure that it is updated to the latest version.

Step Three: Every time you want to go on the internet, from now on you should only do so by launching the Tor Browser. Sometimes it takes several seconds for websites to load, but this is normal the extra time is due to the fact your internet traffic is bouncing around the Tor relays so that it becomes untraceable to you. Use Tor for all websites, including Facebook.

Step Four (optional): If you want to further encrypt your web traffic so it makes it impossible for it to be traced, then you should use Tor together with a virtual private network (VPN). VPNs are premium paid subscription tunnel services that route internet traffic through a private server to hide your traffic and geographic location. There are tons of VPN providers online, offering a range of different prices, so check out this VPN comparison guide before purchasing.

Advice: We know that illegally downloading pirated content via torrents is popular, but although it is tempting, you shouldn't do so on the Tor network, as it will slow down and jam up the network for everyone else. So please don't do this. Also, again, remember that it is illegal.

New Hampshire House reverses stance on cryptocurrency money transmitter status – Brave New Coin

New Hampshire is home to the largest community of freedom advocates in the US, and possibly the largest Bitcoin-using community as well. The New Hampshire State House of Representatives recently passed an important bill for local Bitcoin businesses. The legislation unwinds a bill created two years prior, an ominous-sounding Bill, HB 666, which defined bitcoin and cryptocurrency-using businesses as money transmitter services.

The law forced at least one Bitcoin business from accepting customers in the state, and has kept new businesses from starting up in the otherwise bitcoin-friendly stronghold. The popular bitcoin and altcoin exchange Poloniex, based in Washington DC, discontinued services in October 2016, due to changes in New Hampshires regulatory statute as it applies to cryptocurrency.

Other Bitcoin exchanges, including Coinbase, CoinEx and Circle registered with the state Banking Department. They also handle US dollars, whereas Poloniex only deals in cryptocurrencies.

- Poloniex

Poloniexs CEO Michael Demopoulos later testified to a Committee studying Cryptocurrency regulation in New Hampshire, and began discussions with the New Hampshire Banking Department soon thereafter.

LBRY CEO Jeremy Kauffman joined the conversation when the New Hampshire governor appointed him as an industry expert on virtual currencies. [New Hampshire] already has the highest per-capita Bitcoin usage, Kauffman said soon after the new bill was approved, And very soon it is likely to have the most favorable regulatory climate. New Hampshire is passing legislation to completely deregulate cryptocurrencies.

Ian Freeman has also been working to overturn the legislation. How did this happen in a state with the largest concentration of bitcoin enthusiasts per capita? asked Freeman, who worked with a couple of the State Representatives to help clarify cryptocurrency usage. Honestly, we were caught off-guard, but now thats all changed.

Freeman is the Program Director of LRN.FM and hosts the popular libertarian podcast, Free Talk Live. He founded the the Free Keene blog in late 2006, after moving to New Hampshire as part of the Free State Project. The activist and talk show host had been attending and recording sessions of the state house committee formed in the wake of the Poloniex withdraw to study cryptocurrency.

- Ian Freeman, Program Director of LRN.FM and host of Free Talk Live

The bill [HB 436] as filed wasnt quite what wed hoped for, Freeman said on the Free Keene blog. It created a new definition and exemption for virtual currency in the statutes, but still left in statutes a definition and regulation for convertible virtual currency.

We explained to them that this was confusing and they should be striking the regulation for convertible virtual currency rather than creating the additional terminology, Freeman continued. You know what? They listened AND did us one better!

While the new bill removes cryptocurrencies from the category of money transmitter services, and therefore no longer requires licensing, it still has to pass the State Senate before becoming law. The commerce committee amended the bill and turned it into the best possible protection for bitcoin businesses in New Hampshire! The amended bill completely exempts from the money transmitter statutes, Freeman concluded.

New Hampshires legislature has had more than its share of run-ins with Bitcoin. In January 2016, the same House of Representatives voted 264 to 74 to kill a separate bill allowing citizens in New Hampshire to pay their taxes and other state fees using bitcoin.

The New Hampshire State Treasurer would have been forced to not only accept the cryptocurrency if the bill had passed, but also to choose a bitcoin payment processing firm to convert the transactions by January 2017. The bill faced serious opposition and has not been re-introduced since.

- New Hampshire Department of Revenue Administration

More and more states have been considering following New Hampshires early lead into Bitcoin regulation. Both Hawaii and Washington State recently introduce new rules. Bitfinex has since changed the terms of service on their website to exclude customers from Washington State.

Two weeks ago Coinbase announced that it will cease offering services in Hawaii. The state now requires local Bitcoin businesses to get a license and hold 100% reserves for each customer.

The Hawaii Division of Financial Institutions demanded that customer reserves be held in fiat currency. Although Coinbase securely maintains 100% of all customer funds on behalf of our customers, the company said in their announcement, it is impractical, costly, and inefficient for us to establish a redundant reserve of fiat currency over and above customer digital currency secured on our platform.

Winklevoss twins lose a bid to broaden bitcoin – CBS News

WASHINGTON - The irrepressible Winklevoss twins, known for having sued Mark Zuckerberg over the idea for Facebook (FB), have suffered a setback from federal regulators in their push to expand the use of bitcoin to a wider universe of investors.

The Securities and Exchange Commission rejected Friday a proposed Winklevoss exchange-traded fund that could have opened the digital currency to larger numbers of ordinary investors. The SEC said the proposal from Tyler and Cameron Winklevoss was inconsistent with rules for securities exchanges designed to prevent fraud and manipulation, and to protect investors.

Bitcoin allows people to buy goods and services and exchange money without involving banks, credit card issuers or other third parties. About 8 years old, it has yet to be broadly embraced and has been prone to wild price swings.

Bitcoin Privacy for All: Breeze Wallet Is About to Bring TumbleBit to Life – Bitcoin Magazine

TumbleBit, one of the most promising privacy advancements built on top of Bitcoin, will be implemented in the upcoming Breeze Wallet.

The Breeze Wallet is a bitcoin wallet in development by blockchain startup Stratis, scheduled for release in one or two months. It will serve as a typical bitcoin wallet for desktop computers, but with an added tumbling option. Connected through a TumbleBit tumbler, Breeze Wallet users can mix their coins without needing to trust each other or the tumbler with their coins or their privacy.

We are integrating TumbleBit because its a trustless and secure solution that works with Bitcoin without any forks, Stratis Founder and CEO Chris Trew told Bitcoin Magazine.

Stratis

Stratis is a U.K.-based startup that offers end-to-end solutions for development, testing and deployment of blockchain applications. The company will maintain its own blockchain (the Stratis blockchain), which includes a native token (the Stratis token). Additionally, the company builds tools for existing blockchains, including Bitcoin, Ethereum and BitShares. Stratis projects include a Bitcoin full node in the programming language C#, a Bitcoin software development kit and, indeed, the Breeze wallet, which will hold both bitcoins and the Stratis tokens.

TumbleBit was first proposed by academic researchers Ethan Heilman, Leen AlShenibr, Foteini Baldimtsi, Alessandra Scafuro and Sharon Goldberg. Inspired by its potential, Programming The Blockchain in C# author and Stratis team member Nicolas Dorier started working on an implementation of TumbleBit in C#. He was joined by the co-author of his book, Ficsr dm, who focused on Tor integration.

Now, with the help of dm, Stratis is making the solution available in a convenient and easy-to-use wallet. It is a natural match not only because Stratiss and Doriers implementations of TumbleBit share the same programming language, but also because Stratis has a strong focus on privacy on their own platform, Trew explained.

Regulation is one of the main hurdles for blockchain [technology] and Bitcoin adoption among the financial services industry, he said. The first step of regulatory compliance is privacy of their sensitive financial data. This is one of the reasons for the rise of the private chain and distributed ledger technologies. Our goal is to provide open and public blockchain solutions for the enterprise; to deliver this we must provide transaction privacy on a public blockchain.

Challenges

To realize the privacy features it promises, Breeze Wallet will also introduce a relatively new type of light client. Based on work by Bitcoin Core developer Jonas Schnelli, the wallet will utilize Full Block Simplified Payment Verification, or Full Block SPV.

Full nodes download and verify each block on the blockchain, which can be quite resource intensive. Most light clients therefore only download the specific data thats relevant to them: mostly relating to their Bitcoin addresses. But to do this, they need to share all their addresses with a server or a node on the Bitcoin network.

This server or node and anyone spying on the communication with this server or node learns all addresses that are in the wallet. This makes tumbling coins from one address in a wallet to another address in the same wallet rather pointless.

Instead, dm is currently implementing a type of light client that will download full blocks but immediately discard any data it doesnt need. This requires the wallet to download more data than typical light clients, which is why Breeze Wallet wont be very suitable for mobile wallets anytime soon. But it will be less resource intensive than running a full node and, therefore, easier to use for regular users.

Lastly, one hurdle remains: someone, somewhere, needs to host the tumbler. While this can be done as a hidden service, the TumbleBit developers have been hesitant to do this themselves so far. Such a service may not exactly please regulators and anti-money laundering agencies.

Stratis is now working through the legal and regulatory issues involved with deploying a solution of this type. The ultimate goal is to have a decentralized network of TumbleBit servers. We are working on delivering end-to-end solutions; then we will further develop some of the core components, Trew said.

Will we soon be able to hold Bitcoin investments in an Isa? – Telegraph.co.uk

British savers might soon be able to invest in the controversial Bitcoin currency through a stocks and shares Isa.

The American regulator, the SEC, is about to decide whether to permit an "exchange traded fund", which would track the digital currency, to issue shares which would be traded on a US exchange.

If the fund gets the green light, British investors would be able to buy shares through their trading accounts and in theory even their Isa.

The investment fundhas been proposed by the Winklevoss twins, the entrepreneurial pair famous for suing Mark Zuckerberg for allegedly stealing the idea for Facebook.

Exchange-traded funds work by pooling investors' cash and using it to buy the underlying assets - which in most cases are shares or commodities. Thousands of such funds exist, and investors can buy or sell through a broker just as if they were buying any other share.

Bitcoin traders are awaiting the SEC's decision with interest, predicting that if the fund is permitted, it will lead to a surge in demand from investors and thus a rapid rise in the currency's value - which has already risen substantially.

Bitcoin is generally regarded with suspicion by central banks and some governments. It is an unregulated currency in Britain, and its use banned completely in some countries, on the grounds that it is linked to money laundering and other criminal activities.

Comets edge Sound Tigers again – Utica Observer Dispatch

Ben Birnell

UTICA The Utica Comets are playing some of their best hockey.

For the second time this week, their strong effort was enough to get past veteranJaroslav Halak and the Atlantic Divisions Bridgeport Sound Tigers to improve their American Hockey League-best win streak to six games.

Michael Carcone scored the eventual game-winner, and Thatcher Demko stopped 23 shots to help the Comets earn another gritty 2-1 win over the Sound Tigers before an announced crowd of 3,870 at the Utica Memorial Auditorium. The Comets also won 2-1 on Sunday in Utica.

"Really, top-to-bottom our team-game was good. We didn't give up a lot anddefended hard," said Comets coach Travis Green, whose team is 7-0-1-0 in the last eight games.

On the winner, Pascal Pelletier worked the puck behind the net on the left side and flipped it through the crease to a cutting Carcone in front, where the rookie punched it past Halak for his second of the season with 13:24 remaining in the game.

"You have to make (Halak) move and get in his face," said Carcone, who with linemates Pelleter and Borna Rendulic had a solid game. "You have make sure he doesn't see pucks. Because if does, he'll probably stop it."

Demko, who has allowed seven goals in six consecutive starts, made some big stops throughout in another solid performance. Rookie Curtis Valk added his 15th of the season in the second period for the Comets, who were without points leader Alex Grenier after the forward was recalled before Fridays game.

The victory matches Utica'slonges streak this season and pushed the Comets (27-23-7-2, 63 points) to their fifth consecutive win at home. The win was important was for Utica as theybattle for fourth place in the North Division with St. Johns, which beat Rochester 3-2 on Friday. Utica, which has 17 regular-season games remaining, is one point back of St. Johnswith two games in hand. The top four teams in each division make the playoffs.

Halak, the NHL veteran who entered Friday among the AHL's best goalies, totaled 26 saves for the Sound Tigers (36-20-2-1). Three of Halaks four losses in regulation this season have come against the Comets.

First period

Both Demko and Halak made some key stops to keep the game scoreless through 20 minutes.

The Comets, who led 12-7 in shots, had a good chance with about 3 minutes. After a turnover, Carcone found Pelletier on a 2-on-0 on the right side, but Halak slid over to make the save on the veteran forwards one-timer.

Later, Demko stopped Ryan Pulock'sgood lookthrough traffic from the right point.

Second period

The Comets controlled and broke the tie late on a nice effort between Jake Virtanen and Valk.

The goal came with Cole Cassels and Kyle Burroughs off after short but good scrap. Virtanen got the puck from Cody Kunyk, broke into the zone on the left side and sent a cross-ice pass to a streaking Valk, who buried a backhanded shot high past Halak with 5:08 left.

It snapped a nine-game goalless streak for Valk. It was the third assist in four games for Kunyk.

Demko was tested later on Bridgeports lone power play. However, he turned aside good chances from Devon Toews, Michael Dal Colle and Bracken Kearns on the doorstep with 33 seconds left to keep the Sound Tigers at bay.

Third period

The teams traded goals about three minutes apart to make things interesting.

The Comets answered first with Carcone's goal for a two-goal cushion. Green was happy with play line.

"They were really good," Green said. "It was nice to see Carcone get rewarded."

However, Bridgeport didn't go away. The Sound Tigers broke up the shutout when Kellen Jones fooled Demko with a shot from the high slot with 10:20 to play.

Bridgeport continued to pressure, but the Comets were tough. Demko made a big blocker stop on Joshua Winquist with about two minutes left. Halak was pulled with 1:15 left, but the Comets held off the Sound Tigers.

"He's been outstanding," Carcone said of Demko. "He's been a big part of these wins."

Up next

The Comets hit the road to play Lehigh Valley at 7 p.m. Saturday at the PPL Center. Lehigh Valley has won all three meetings against Utica this season.

NOTES: Fridays game was the Comets 86th consecutive sellout, though there were some unfilled seats throughout the Aud. The team has sold out 71 consecutive regular-season games. Wacey Hamilton (week-to-week) and Derek Hulak (39 consecutive games) each missed the game with injuries. The teams meet for the final time this season March 18 in Bridgeport.

Brodalumab approved for psoriasis – ModernMedicine

The FDA has approved anti-interleukin-17 receptor monoclonal antibody brodalumab (Siliq, Valeant Pharmaceuticals) to treat adults with moderate-to-severe plaque psoriasis.

The injectable systemic therapy blocks the receptor for IL-17, so it has a mechanism of action similar to approved biologics secukinumab (Cosentyx, Novartis) and ixekizumab (Taltz, Eli Lilly), which also block the receptor for IL-17, according to Mark Lebwohl, M.D., professor and chair of dermatology, Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, who was involved with the clinical trials that paved the way for brodalumabs FDA approval.

Dr. LebwohlBrodalumab is as effective or more effective than any other FDA-approved drug to treat psoriasis, according to Dr. Lebwohl, who was lead author on the New England Journal of Medicine paper examining phase 3 studies comparing brodalumab with ustekinumab (Stelara, Janssen), for psoriasis.1

In its phase 2 data, it (brodalumab) was the most effective drug that we had ever seen. Nearly two-thirds of plaque psoriasis patients achieved (psoriasis area-and-severity index) PASI 100. Thats a number weve never seentwo-thirds of people not having a dot of psoriasis left, Dr. Lebwohl says.

Phase 3 studies PASI 100 percentages were lower, but still unprecedented, according to Dr. Lebwohl.

Researchers reported in the NEJM that PASI 75 response rates at week 12 were 86% with the 210-mg brodalumab dose and 67% with 140-mg of the biologic, versus 6% in the placebo group. In two other studies, from 44 to 37% of psoriasis patients on 210 mg of brodalumab achieved PASI 100 at 12 weeks, versus 22 to 19% of patients on ustekinumab. The approved dose is 210 mg.

Suicide a concern for FDA

The downside, which will appear in the label, is that there were a small number of suicides. In the psoriasis trials, there were four (suicides) out of 4,000 treated patients. In all the trials, there were six (suicides) out of 6,000 treated patients. Although it is not clear that the suicides had anything to do with the drug, that raised an alarm at the FDA, and they put it into the package insert, Dr. Lebwohl says.

Concerns about suicide helped to make brodalumabs road to approval a rocky one. In January 2016, the National Psoriasis Foundation published an article that Amgen, which along with AstraZeneca had been developing brodalumab, stopped developing the biologic because of suicidal thought and behavior concerns during clinical trials. AstraZeneca later auctioned off brodalumab to Valeant.

According to FDA, subjects in the trials were more likely to think about suicide or commit suicide if they had a history of suicidality or depression. But a causal association between treatment with brodalumab and increased suicidal ideation and behavior risks has not been established.

Dr. Lebwohl says he is familiar with each of the patients who committed suicide during the psoriasis trials and thinks it was more bad luck than a pattern in treated patients. But because of the black box warning, dermatologists and other prescribers need to counsel patients about the potential risk, he says.

I, interestingly, have a patient who I have taken care of for many years and has failed every treatment out there. I actually hospitalized her in 2002 because I was worried she was going to commit suicide, Dr. Lebwohl says. This is the first drug after all those years that was able to clear her completely. Since the trials ended, she has been on the other IL-17 drugs with either a minor or moderate response. So, shes waiting to get back on this when it comes out.

Siliq should be available to patients in the second quarter of 2017, he says.

Disclosure: Dr. Lebwohl has been an investigator for the makers of brodalumab.

Egyptian initiative encourages young women to travel the world alone – Al-Monitor

CAIRO In an attempt to break social and psychological barriers that preventyoung Egyptian women from traveling the world by themselves, Shaima Ali, an employee of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, launched the initiative She Travels inAugust 2015. Theplatform encourageswomen of all social classes and ages to inspire other women by sharingtheir travel stories of trips on their ownor with their families.

TranslatorJoelle El-Khoury

Ali has been holding monthly workshops in Cairo andAlexandria, attended generally by 30-40 women at a time, where female travelerstalk about theirexperiences visiting foreign places. The talks donot addresstourist attractions or local lifestyles, but rather focus on personal experiences and the way the community has dealt with the women upon their return to Egypt.

The majority of Egyptian women whotravel alone often face social orreligious rejection, under the pretext that itmay not be safe, they may be scared abroad and fail to act or protect themselves in a community they are not familiar with, or that Islam requires womento beaccompanied by a male guardian while traveling.

In February, Al-Monitor attended the workshop in Cairo and spoke to Ali and other members of theinitiative.

Ali told Al-Monitor, It was unacceptable, even for my ownfamily, that girls traveleven within Egypt. It was a far-fetched dream for me to travel by myself, but I decided to make my dream come true.

She said, Julia Roberts 'Eat Pray Love'was an incentive as she chose to travel to face her psychological problems and engage in new experiences. My first experience was a 16-daytrip to Europe, where I explored a new world thatallowed me to return to Egypt a new person.

Commenting on her first experience, Ali said, When I saw theworld outside the Egyptian border, I came to realize that I was trapped in a box. The experience was worth the risk and challenges.

Once back, Ali decided that she didnot want her experience to remain a mere personal story that ended with her returnto Cairo airport. This ishow the idea ofShe Travels came about,to encourage other girls to travel and shareexperiences in the workshops.

"The girls who share their experiences in the workshops shed light on their own social circumstances, so that other girls become aware that traveling is not justfor more emancipated or higher social classes, Ali said.

She added, The workshop is designed to break social and psychological barriers. Most of the questions asked by womenwho have never been outside Egypt focus on how to face the parents negative attitude, deal with Western societiesor handle the high cost of travel.

She stressed, After hearing stories of other womenwithsimilar social and financial backgrounds, they learn about the options that may make it easier for them to decide to travel.

Ali focuses in the workshops on encouraging the womento travel as a way to fulfill and free themselves in Egyptian society.

She said, Our daily life is full of people who dictate what we do, by advising or coercing us. This often causes womento lose the ability to make key life decisions. Once they break this tradition and start making their own decisionseven trivial onessuch as choosing what meal to havetheir self-confidence will be boosted. This will not happen if they remain trapped in their small circle.

Women who manage to break social barriers often face abacklash that points to religion. In December 2012, Dar al-Ifta,Egypt'sofficial religious institution tasked with drafting edicts, had settled the debate on women traveling without a male guardian or a male relative, and authorized women to travel with other women. The rulingfocusedon women'spersonal safety, which is the key factor that religiousscholars took into consideration when discussing whether or not women should be allowed totravelalone.

Ali said, Toensure safe companionship, 20,000 girls became a member of the 'She Travels'Facebook page, which has become a platform that brings together girls who sharethe same desire totravel and beencouraged [to do so]. [We] do not organize trips for female travelers, but we openchannels of communication for womenlooking for achance to travel.

Amani Hussein, 28, hails from a middle-class family in Upper Egypt. She pursued a masters degree in Germany. Husseintold Al-Monitor, Traveling has helped me achieve my goals. My decision to pursue my university studies in Cairo was the first step in confronting my parents. They felt that I was derailing from the family tradition requiring that girls get married and have their own family right after finishing school.

She continued, The dispute with the family mostly ends with the parents seeing that their daughters life has changed. Parents are more likely to accept the idea of their daughter traveling for their studies, rather than traveling to discover the world or to be free.

Speaking to Al-Monitor abouther travel experiences to seven countries by herself, Hind Saeid, 32, said, Girls may benefit from the small margin of freedom given by their parents to obtain full freedom. My work in the public domain gave me more freedom away from my family. Most girls aspire to live new experiences where they discover themselves away from their family.

Saeid added, I experiencetough situations every time I travel, but being responsible was the first step in becoming independent and responsible formy owndecisions.

Indeed, there are many examples of Egyptian girlswho manageto overcomesocial and religious obstacles and embarkon journeys outsideEgypt'sborders. For many girls in Egypt, traveling does not seem a time to just relax, but more so an opportunityto discover their true capacities and personalities.

FIFA chief hints Trump travel ban could hurt US World Cup 2026 bid – RT

US President Donald Trumps travel ban on six mainly Muslim countries could hurt his countrys proposed bid to host the FIFA World Cup 2026.

The US is considered favorite to host the centerpiece of world football. FIFA President Gianni Infantino says however that Trumps signing of an executive order that places a 90-day travel ban on people from six Muslim majority nations on Monday could seriously harm its chances.

Trumps revised ban bars new visas for those from Somalia, Iran, Syria, Sudan, Libya and Yemen and also temporarily blocks all refugees from these countries.

"Any team, including the supporters and officials of that team, who qualify for a World Cup need to have access to the country, otherwise there is no World Cup," Infantino, the head of footballs world governing body, told reporters following a meeting with football leaders from around the globe held in London, Bloombergreported.

"The requirements will be clear," Infantino said of FIFAs regulations for future hosts, which are likely to be completed later this year. "And then each country can make up their decision, whether they want to bid or not based on the requirements. Nothing to do with the US or not, its general sporting criterion."

It is understood the US, which has lost several prior bids to host the tournament, including being beaten by a bid from Qatar to host the 2022 World Cup, is weighing up an application either alongside Mexico or Canada, or on its own.

The 2026 World Cup Finals will be the first to feature an enlarged 48-team format, which FIFA voted in favor of in January.

The US last hosted the World Cup 23 years ago at World Cup USA 94, where Brazil triumphed after beating Italy on penalties in the final, courtesy of Italian sensation Roberto Baggio missing his deciding spot kick in the shootout.

It was somewhat fitting that a missed penalty decided World Cup USA 94, as the tournaments opening ceremony became famous for Diana Ross comically missing her spot kick effort during the routine that accompanied the songstress rendition of her hit Im Coming Out.

So far, US states New York, Massachusetts, Hawaii, Minnesota, Washington and Oregon have formally opposed Trumps travel ban.

SPIRITUALITY: During Lent, build your relationship with God – Norwich Bulletin

The Rev. Cal Lord For The Bulletin

Last weekend, a group of us from church went to see The Shack, the new movie based on W. Paul Youngs best selling book. I knew the movie would elicit some questions so I invited everyone back to the house afterwards.

It was Sunday night. The show finished up just after 6 p.m., so Lori and I decided to order pizza for everyone. Everyone started arriving and we put out some chips, crackers, fruits and veggies. Fifteen minutes later the food arrived.

Lori met the driver at the door and said, Just bring it into the kitchen. Without missing a beat, the driver walked in and headed around the corner with the pizzas. One friend said, He seems to know his way around here.

Another friend recognized the driver as the owner of the pizza restaurant. He said to me, Wow! How do you rate having the boss deliver your order? I smiled and said, Its all in who you know.

The truth is that if you live anywhere for any length of time you get to know people. Over time you build up relationships. Those relationships become friendships. Sometimes you get to know the boss, and that has perks.

It is like what happens with our faith. Once you start spending time with God, in Bible study, in prayer and worship, your relationship deepens. Before you know it, God shows up wherever you go. He is no longer a stranger at your house.

As you walk through Lent, make it a point to spend a little more time with Jesus. Get to know him up close and personal. When it comes to the important stuff in life, you can count on him to show up. Take it from me: he always delivers.

God bless. See you in church.

The Rev. Cal Lord, of Norwich, is the pastor of Central Baptist Church of Westerly. Reach him at calstigers@gmail.com.
