It looks like cryptocurrency mining is driving up Nvidia graphics card prices too – PC Gamer

We pointed out a couple of weeks ago that cryptocurrency miners are largely to blame for the scarcity of AMD Radeon RX 580 and 570 graphics cards. That has not changedfinding an RX 580/570 in stock and without a grossly inflated price tag is a near-impossible taskbut what has changed is that miners now seem to be driving up the price of Nvidia's GeForce GTX 1060 and 1070 cards too.

A user on Reddit lamented that GTX 1060 pricing is "skyrocketing," which is an exaggeration of the situation, though not totally off base.

"I just checked Jet and their cheapest 6GB 1060 was $280 when yesterday it was $246. On Newegg, the cheapest was $226 and now it's $270? Is this because of mining? Should I buy one now before the prices get higher? I'm freaking out guys!," Lions_for_Life posted.

He also pointed out that he had the opportunity to grab a GeForce GTX 1060 card the other day for $210, only to now see that prices have jumped across the board. Is there any merit to his claim? We decided to do some digging and as it turns out, he appears to be onto something.

One of the cheaper GTX 1060 cards out there is MSI's GTX 1060 Aero ITX 6TG OC. It is the least expensive 6GB 1060 on Newegg, which as the Reddit user noted is priced at $270. Over at Amazon, only third-party vendors offer the same card, albeit starting at $294yikes!

We headed over to CamelCamelCamel to see how this card has been trending, and sure enough the asking price is as high as it's ever been.

About a month and a half ago, this same card sold for around $220 on Amazon, via third-parties. So in other words, pricing has risen 34 percent in the span of about six weeks.

A similar situation seems to playing out in GeForce GTX 1070 territory as well. Take the Asus GeForce GTX 1070 8GB ROG Strix OC Edition (STRIX-GTX1070-O8G-GAMING). Amazon has this one in stock for $470, versus $399 as recently as May 22. Have a look:

For the most part, this fluctuated between $420 and $450 for several months for dipping down to $399, but has now ballooned to a new high.

So what does all of this mean? We can't say with 100 percent certainty that cryptocurrency miners are the culprit, but it sure seems that way. That's where AMD's hardware partners pinned the blame the shortage of Radeon RX 580 and 570 cards, and with those being out of stock, it makes sense that miners would turn to alternative hardwarein this case, GeForce GTX 1060 and 1070 cards.

In case you're new to all of this, cryptocurrency participants use graphics cards to "mine" various coins, which can be traded for Bitcoin and then sold for actual cash. The right hardware can pay for itself within months, and at that point anything that is mined is pure profit (minus the power bill).

This was not an issue for gamers over the past few years because miners had turned to ASIC hardware built specifically for mining. However, GPUs are popular again because of newer hashing algorithms, like Ethereum's DaggerHashimoto or ZCash's Equihash, which are resistant to ASIC hardware. On top of that, there has been a spike in the value of Ethereum and Bitcoin lately, the latter of which recently topped the $3,000 mark for the first time.

Another reason we're seeing this play out among Pascal cards is that Nvidia GPUs are proving nearly as profitable as AMD GPUs with some cryptocurrencies. While AMD's GPUs are still generally better, some of Nvidia's card's are cheaper and consume less power.

Hopefully AMD and Nvidia both can get handle on things by increasing production and/or building a separate set of cards specifically intended for miners. Otherwise, your best bet is to pounce on a good deal when you find one, as the aforementioned Reddit user wishes he had done.

Note: This analysis does not attempt to speculate on the market implications of news events. This is a pure analysis of the market data.

The unprecedented rise in the BTC-USD market to near $3,000 even caught many of the more bullish traders by surprise. However, this quick rise in value did not come cheaply: once BTC finally ran out of steam, the market correction not only affected BTC-USD prices, but it was felt throughout the entire crypto-space as entire market cap took a massive plunge from $49B to $36B over the course of three days.

There are two ways of viewing the BTC-USD run to near $3,000 levels:

The top can be viewed as the absolute top of the market ($2,948)

The top can viewed as the peak at $2,726.50 with a healthy 127 percent Fibonacci Extension

Im going to analyze the market from the view of option 2 because I feel this provides a more sober outlook on the direction of the BTC-USD market. In strong Bull Runs, it is very common for markets to take a 50 percent correction; a 100 percent Retracement of the initial downward move (if its a very strong Bull Run), followed by a 127 percent Fibonacci Extension will provide another test to see how the market feels in the new market highs. In our case, we didnt quite make it to the 127 percent Extension (shown in orange in Figures 3 and 4).

Currently, BTC-USD is finding support on the 50 percent Fibonacci Retracement of the Bear Run from $3,000 (labeled in green). It made a test of the 61 percent line (labeled in red) and it was ultimately rejected. This rejection and subsequent support test of the 50 percent line coincides with a decrease in volume and a near flip of the four-hour MACD from Bullish to Bearish (labeled in yellow). These market moves show that, unless significant volume hits the BTC-USD markets, there is a likely test of the lower Fibonacci Retracement Lines in its future.

After our initial market high around $2,700, multiple momentum indicators began to reveal that, although the price was increasing, the market was beginning to lose upward momentum this type of price activity is called Divergence and can be seen across the RSI, MACD and Volume. The long-term outlook for BTC-USD indicates a possibility of lower lows in its future. On the higher time-scales (refer to Figure 3), the momentum indicators are pointing toward more downward movement as the price is currently failing to make a new high and seeing decreased market volume. Its totally possible that the market could move sideways or even see price growth on decreasing volume markets arent always rational. However, if you want to know whether the price growth is sustainable and reliable, keep an eye on the momentum indicators and watch for volume to accompany price growth in the coming days. For the time being, I find it very unlikely that BTC-USD will see any significant price growth. But, after all, this is cryptocurrency; anything is possible.

Short-term indicators are showing a possible move to the lower Fibonacci Retracement values ($2,500, $2,400, $2,280).

Long-term indicators are showing a loss of upward momentum. Until more volume hits the markets, very little price growth is likely.

Ancient Comets May Have Delivered Xenon To Earth – NOVA Next

Comets hurtling through space 3.54.5 billion years ago may have deposited heavy isotopes of xenon into Earths atmosphere. This clue to the isotopes mysterious origins suggests that comets visited Earth in its earliest days, that the moon and atmosphere are younger than we originally thought, and that comets might have delivered the first organic material to our fledgeling planet.

While there are only trace amounts of xenon in the atmosphere, the noble gas doesnt chemically react with other elements, meaning its a relatively stable marker whose origin is easy to trace.

But the presence of a surprisingly high percentage of heavy xenon isotopes in Earths atmosphere has hampered our understanding of our planets origins. Scientists previously couldnt find any plausible sources for these heavier isotopessolar wind and meteors, for example, only contain lighter isotopes.

The new data comes from gas collected during the Rosetta mission, which flew a spacecraft near the surfaceof 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko, a member of the family of comets controlled by Jupiters gravity. The samples contained a mixture of three noble gases, krypton, argon, and xenon. This comets xenon contained the same perplexing heavy isotopes, suggesting that Earth may have received a fraction of its xenon from comets. The model that best fits the atmospheres xenon makeup estimates that about 22% of it came from comets.

These new findings allow scientist to correct small errors in dating the planets evolution. Heres Leah Crane for New Scientist:

On Earth, we presumed the presence of this isotope was primarily a result of decaying iodine. We know the rate at which iodine decays, so we use the quantity of xenon-129 to gauge the time at which planetary events took place. But if 22 per cent of the xenon in Earths atmosphere was transported by comets, models based on iodine decay arent accurate. They overestimate the age of Earths atmosphere and the moon.

Since this study only examines data from one comet, missions to other comets will need to verify the results. But this cometary xenon further links Earths birth with the rest of the solar system. Results from other comets will provide further details of Earths formative years and perhaps even an explanation for how the first organic molecules arrived on Earth.

Travel World Responds to Trump’s Cuba Policy Changes – TravelPulse

President Donald Trump announced on Friday his plans to partially roll back several Obama-era policies on travel to Cuba.

The revised policy stops short of completely cutting off ties to the island nation but seeks to stop the flow of American money to Cuba's military, security and intelligence services.

In doing so, traveling to Cuba will be more difficult.

Tourism to Cuba remains banned while current travel restrictions are likely to be tightened and more heavily enforced.In a statement to TravelPulse, Intrepid Travel said the policy proposal means stricter government audits to ensure travelers are legitimately qualifying under the 12 approved categories introduced under Obama.

"Despite todays distressing news,and while it will be difficult, if not impossible, for American's to visit Cuba if they go by themselves,it is important to note that Americans will still be able to visit Cuba with a tour group and under a people-to-people program," smarTours co-CEO Greg Geronemus said in a statement to TravelPulse.

"As a result, smarTours and other tour operators alike will be able to continue to take Americans to visit Cuba legally until further notice. So, the silver lining is that it's still very much possible to travel to Cubathe options have simply become more limited."

Small group culinary tour operator Access Trips also expressed disappointment.

"At Access Trips we believe firmly in the power of people-to-people connections to effect change and we affirm our conviction that all Americans should be able to travel freely to Cuba and beyond. Although today's new policy announcement restricts the travel of individuals to Cuba,Access Trips will continue to offer people-to-people small group tours to Cuba as we have been doing since 2015," CEO Tamar Lowell said in a statement.

"Access Trips tours will operate as planned, with our eight-day immersive culinary tours as well as our five-day weekend trips to Havana both designed to help our guests explore Cuban culture through its cuisine."

However, under Trump's plan airlines and cruise lines will still be allowed to fly and sail to Cuba.

"Carnival Corporation is pleased that the policy changes announced by the Trump administration will allow our ships to continue to sail to Cuba," the cruise giant said in a statement. "We will review the extent of the tightening of the travel rules, but our guests have already been traveling under the 12 approved forms of travel to Cuba since we undertook our historic first cruise to Cuba more than a year ago."

Carnival also said it has requested approval its other brands to travel to Cuba in the future.

U.S. Chamber of Commerce Executive Vice President and Head of International Affairs Myron Brilliant issued the following statement today regarding the administrations Cuba policy announcement

U.S. private sector engagement can be a positive force for the kind of change we all wish to see in Cuba," they said. Unfortunately, todays moves actually limit the possibility for positive change on the island and risk ceding growth opportunities to other countries that, frankly, may not share Americas interest in a free and democratic Cuba that respects human rights. We remain committed to working with all relevant parties to remove the antiquated policies that hinder the empowerment of the American and Cuban people.

Trump's proposed policy could stifle hotel development on the island and ban Americans from staying at hotels with ties to the Cuban military. According to CNN, the President's changes would include prohibiting financial transactions incidental to travel with the Cuban government-run GAESA.

Florida Sen. Marco Rubio detailed what Trump's plan means for Americans visiting Cuba in a series of tweets Friday.

However, none of the proposed changes brought forward Friday can go into effect until the U.S. Treasury Department issues updated regulations, a process that could take several months.

American Society of Travel Agents (ASTA) President and CEO Zane Kerby issued the following statement in regards to Trump's policy changes:

"It is important to note that the extent of these changes will not be known until the Treasury and Commerce Department issue updated regulations in the next few monthsand ASTA plans to fully participate in that process," he said. "Broadly speaking, while challenges remain in terms of Cubas readiness for large volumes of American travelers, the past few years have seen a growth in business for U.S. travel agencies, tour operators, airlines, cruise lines, hotel and other travel companies. That progress now appears to be at great risk."

"Rather than shutting the door to this market 90 miles off our shores, we call on policymakers to enact legislation to do away with the statutory Cuba travel ban once and for all," Kerby continued. "While this announcement is a setback, we will continue to advocate toward Cuba travel freedom and look forward to the day it becomes reality."

Friday's announcement was met with chagrin by several members of Congress, including Arizona Sen. Jeff Flake, who recently helped reintroduce the Freedom for Americans to Travel to Cuba Act.

"Any policy change that diminishes the ability of Americans to travel freely to Cuba is not in the best interests of the United States or the Cuban people," stated Flake. "It is time Senate leadership finally allowed a vote on my bipartisan bill to fully lift these archaic restrictions which do not exist for travel by Americans to any other country in the world.The bill has 55 total cosponsors and I am convinced it would pass the Senate with upwards of 70 votes."

Washington, D.C. Rep. Barbara Lee echoed those thoughts in her own statement.

"Since President Obama transformed U.S. relations with Cuba in 2014, Americans and Cubans alike have reaped the benefits of expanded trade, loosened travel restrictions, and strengthened diplomatic ties," said Lee. "The American people should be able to exercise their fundamental right to travel without political interference from the federal government."

"Abandoning our progress makes no sense and achieves nothing. This is a completely unnecessary step backward for American families and businesses, the Cuban peopleand U.S. global leadership."

While changes to the way Americans currently travel to and experience Cuba appear imminent the ongoing debate over travel and trade with Cuba isn't going away anytime soon. A majority of Americans support open travel to Cuba and leading human rights organizations have condemned a reversal of U.S. policy that makes it easier for U.S. travelers to visit Cuba.

DoE Awards $258M for Exascale Supercomputer Research | News … – PCMag

AMD, Cray, HPE, IBM, Intel, and Nvidia receive funding to push ahead with energy efficient exascale supercomputers that use tens not hundreds of megawatts.

The fastest supercomputer in the US today is Titan (currently third fastest in the world). Located at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee, it utilizes a hybrid architecture consisting of AMD CPUs and Nvidia GPUs to offer 20+ petaflops of performance requiring 8.2 megawatts of power. That may be fast today, but the future is exascale supercomputers, which achieve 1,000+ petaflops of performance.

The Department of Energy (DoE) realizes exascale supercomputers are "critical for U.S. leadership in areas such as national security, manufacturing, industrial competitiveness, and energy and earth sciences." But energy efficiency is of great concern. If Titan requires 8.2 megawatts to achieve 20 petaflops, imagine what 1,000 petaflops would require without some major breakthroughs. So the DoE created the PathForward program to focus on energy efficient exascale computing research.

Last week, the DoE chose six technology companies to receive $258 million of funding over a three-year period. Those companies are AMD, Cray, HPE, IBM, Intel, and Nvidia. Each company will also add at least 40 percent additional funding, taking the three-year total investment to $430 million split between hardware, software, and application development research.

The overall goal is to see a huge increase in computing power over today's best supercomputers (50x increase) without a huge increase in energy consumption. Nvidia gets more specific, stating the DoE's ambitious goal is, "to achieve exascale performance using only 20-30 megawatts." The company also points out that attempting to achieve an exascale computer with CPUs alone would take gigawatts of energy.

This isn't a new initiative for the DoE. AMD was awarded a $32 million grant back in 2014 to research exascale computing. There's also competition from China to consider. The two fastest supercomputers in the world reside in China (Tianhe-2 and Sunway TaihuLight). China has also promised to have a prototype of an exascale supercomputer ready before the end of 2017.

Atos Reveals First Commercial ARM-Based Supercomputer – Top500 – TOP500 News

On the opening day of the ISC High Performance conference, Atos announced the Bull Sequana X1310, an ARM-based variant of the companys Sequana X1000 supercomputer line.

Bull Sequana is Atoss flagship HPC blade platform, which up until now was powered primarily by Intel x86 silicon either Xeon or Xeon Phi processors. Blade options for NVIDIA GPU or Xeon Phi coprocessors are also available. The most distinctive feature of the platform is the Bull eXascale Interconnect (BXI), a proprietary high-performance network designed for massive parallelism.

The new Sequana X1310 blade is comprised of three compute nodes, each outfitted with Caviums ThunderX2 processors, the chipmakers second-generation ARM v8 server chip. The new system will be available in the second quarter of 2018.

The addition of an ARM blade product places Atos in rare company. Penguin Computing also announced its own ThunderX2-powered cluster platform today. That product, known as the Tundra ES Valkre, can be ordered now and will ship in the third quarter of 2017. Going further back, E4 Computer Engineering, an Italian computer-maker, started offering ThunderX-based clusters backin 2015, under its ARKA brand. Those first generation Cavium chips could be paired with GPUs for additional computational horsepower.

Other OEMs also appear to be moving towardcommercial offerings.Cray delivered an ARM-based supercomputer, known as Isambard, to the GW4 HPC alliance in the UK earlier this year. That system is supposedly based on Crays CS400 cluster platform, but the company has yet to announce any product plans for the ARM variant. Lenovo, HPE, Dell, Eurotech and Cirrascale have also been fiddling with ARM servers for the HPC market, and a bunch of prototypes have been constructed based on either Cavium or Applied Micro chips.

For its part, Atos has been involvedin ARM-powered HPC for a few years now. One of the early systems built for the Mont-Blanc exascale research project was based on an ARM-based prototype of a Bull blade. In the third phase of the project, Atos is supplying a more advanced platform, which will be the basis of the Bull Sequana X1310 product that will ship next year.

The original premise of bringing ARM into the HPC ecosystem is its energy-efficiency. The architectures energy-sipping RISC design has certainly served it well for the mobile and embedded computing space, where minimizing the power draw is a critical factor. But it remains to be seen whether a 64-bit ARM architecture with more performant behavior can exhibit the same sort of efficiency relative to a conventional x86 chip.

The less-talked about goal for injecting ARM into the HPC space (and the broader server market in general) is to offer an alternative to Intel and its dominant x86 Xeon product line. ARMs most obvious advantage here is the ability of multiple vendors to license the chip and construct an array of different implementations targeted to specific types of workloads.

At some point, we may see Atos and other OEMs licensing the ARMv8-A Scalable Vector Extension (SVE) architecture and building a supercomputer based on this much more powerful ARM variant. This is the strategy Fujitsu has undertaken for its Post-K exascale supercomputer.

With Atos and Penguin now testing the waters with the Cavium ThunderX2 in commercial products, we may soon see other HPC server-makers jumping in as well. Watch this space.

SEATTLE, June 19, 2017 Global supercomputer leader CrayInc. today announced the company has been awarded a contract with the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA) valued at more than $18 million to provide NIWA and its partner, the New Zealand eScience Infrastructure (NeSI), with three Cray supercomputers two CrayXC50 supercomputers and a Cray CS400 cluster supercomputer.

Headquartered in Auckland, NIWA is New Zealands largest and preeminent provider of climate and atmospheric research, and freshwater and ocean science. NIWAs mission is to enhance the economic value and sustainable management of New Zealands aquatic resources and environments, to provide understanding of climate and the atmosphere, and increase the resilience to weather and climate hazards to improve safety and wellbeing of New Zealanders. Also hosted in Auckland, NeSI is a collaborative partnership between the University of Auckland, the University of Otago, Landcare Research, and NIWA, which delivers supercomputing services to researchers nationally.

The new Cray systems will be used for climate research, numerical weather prediction, data analytics, and general scientific research in a range of fields including computational chemistry, engineering, and biomedicine. The systems will be located at a NIWA facility in Wellington and at the University of Auckland.

Our new Cray supercomputers will enable our scientists including the largest team of weather and climate scientists in the country to provide better information on hugely important issues, such as how climate change will affect New Zealand, said NIWA Chief Executive John Morgan. The ability of the new Cray systems to process vast amounts of data in very short spaces of time will also enable us to build more precise forecasting tools to help farmers and environmental managers make more informed decisions using the best information available.

Lenovo and Intel team up for huge new super-computer – ITProPortal

Lenovo has revealed what it says is a part of the next-generation of supercomputers.

At the International Supercomputing Conference in Frankfurt, the company confirmed it has completed the delivery and implementation of the worlds largest, Intel-based Supercomputer at the Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC).

Called MareNostrum 4, the 11.1 petaFLOP supercomputer will be housed in the worlds most beautiful data centre at the Chapel Torre Girona at the Polytechnic University of Catalonia in Barcelona. There it will be used to power a number of scientific investigation processes, including human genome research, bioinformatics and biomechanics to weather forecasting and atmospheric composition.

The system is powered by more than 3,400 nodes of Lenovos next-generation servers, featuring Intel Xeon scalable processors, interconnected with more than 60 kilometres of high-speed, Intel Omni-Path Technology 100 Gb/s network cabling.

The new system has already struck a claim to be one of the biggest in the world, currently listed at #13 on the TOP500 list, released today, and Lenovo says it will also continue to grow over time.

Testing stem cell therapies unilaterally?A side-by-side comparison of strength of key muscles may enable scientists to evaluate stem cell therapies for the disease. Motor neurons degenerate in ALS. Why these cells are destroyed remains unclear. Therefore, how to slow or stop this destruction of motor neurons in ALS remains an open question.

In the meantime, a growing number of scientists are turning to stem cells in hopes to promote motor neuron survival in people with ALS and/or reduce their toxicity (see December 2015 conference news). But how to evaluate these strategies in the clinic remains hotly debated.

Now, a research team at Cedar Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, California reports that an emerging outcome measure, which involves monitoring muscle strength, may facilitate the evaluation of stem cell therapies for the disease (Rushton et al., 2017). The study, led by Clive Svendsen, found that functional decline of key muscles on the left and right side of people with ALS progressed at a similar rate. The results suggest that at least some stem cell therapies could be evaluated unilaterally by comparing the strength of muscles on the treated and untreated side for each of these muscle groups.

This side-by-side comparison, according to a subsequent power analysis, may enable clinicians to evaluate stem cell therapies for ALS in a smaller sample size without the need for sham surgeries and/or placebo injections.

This unilateral approach is emerging as an alternative to evaluate a growing number of potential neuroprotective strategies for neurodegenerative diseases including ALS (see NCT02943850, NCT02478450; Glass et al., 2016).

The study is published on June 9 in Neurology.

The retrospective analysis, performed in collaboration with Cedar Sinais Robert Baloh, studied the rates of decline of 6 upper and lower muscle groups in nearly 750 people with ALS determined by fixed dynamometry. These longitudinal datasets, previously collected by physical therapist Pat Andres and colleagues, now at Massachusetts General Hospital, capture the decline in strength of key muscles in people with ALS during at least a 16-month period measured by either the TUFTS Quantitative Neuromuscular Exam (TQNE) or more recently, the Accurate Test of Limb Isometric Strength (ATLIS) system (Andres et al., 1986; Shields et al., 1998; Andres et al., 2012.

Analyzing therapies by hand. Meanwhile, Biogen scientists in Cambridge, Massachusetts are turning to hand-held dynamometry to evaluate potential therapies for ALS. The emerging strength-based measure highly correlates with the progressive loss of motor function (ALS-FRS-R) and breathing capacity (FVC) according to a retrospective analysis of 924 people with ALS presented at the 2017 meeting of the American Academy of Neurology (see May 2017 news). The study builds on previous work, led by Barrow Institutes Jeremy Shefner in Phoenix, Arizona and Biogens Toby Ferguson in Cambridge, Massachusetts, which found that monitoring the strength of key muscles using hand-held dynamometry is a reliable and reproducible approach to measure progression of ALS in a clinical setting and thereby, may facilitate the evaluation of potential therapies (see May 2017 conference news; Shefner et al., 2014).

Now, Svendsens team is gearing up to evaluate their potential stem cell therapy for ALS. The strategy uses genetically engineered neural progenitor cells (NPCs) to deliver GDNF into the CNS in hopes to protect motor neurons in people with the disease (see April 2017 news; Gowing et al., 2014). The approach is at the phase 1 stage. Stay tuned.

There was a depth of spirituality in Cardinal Ivan Dias, former Archbishop of Mumbai, said Joseph Dias, general secretary of Catholic Secular Forum, here tonight. Cardinal Dias passed away in Rome today. When he was appointed Archbishop, many of us did not know him too wellsince he had been involved with the diplomatic services for the Vatican, but as soon as we encountered him we could see in him the depth of his spirituality and his love for his priests, Joseph Dias said.

His first projects were the development of the Clergy Home and the Seminaryhe came across as a no-nonsense leader, demanding accountability from his priests while being generous in his love for them. I had the wonderful opportunity of serving as the secretary of the Archdiocesan Pastoral Council for three years and it was during that time I was able to see the humane, gentle, spiritual and strong side of him, he said.

He loved youth. I know how excited he was meeting them, sometimes even playing the guitar to sing his favourite song Telephone to Glory, said Dias. With his death the Church has lost a brilliant and endearing prince, he added.

The Healing Spirituality of Hospital Chaplains – LifeZette

We dont really get called for the good news.

Those are the sober words of Rev. Amy Greene, director of spiritual care at Cleveland Clinic in Ohio, in an interview with LifeZette. We dont really get called for the miraculous recovery, she added. People tend to call us when things havent gone as well.

That is likely a vast understatement. A hospital staff chaplain plays a key support role in the spiritual guidance and emotional upkeep of patients in a clinical setting. Unlike a pastoral chaplain in a congregational setting, a hospital chaplain most likely steps into a patient's life at one of the most difficult times ever.

Chaplains make themselves available to give support to families and staff and to be a hand for someone to hold.

"Attending to people at their absolute worst moments is primary for us," Greene said. "It's sort of our first duty."

Even so hospital chaplains do have some joyous and rewarding moments on the job.

"We all come from our own particular religious backgrounds, but we're not here to push our own religion," Greene said. "We're here for everyone whether they're religious or not."

If you've ever been to visit a loved one in the hospital and the first person to meet you in the hospital wings is the chaplain you know something is not right. "My chaplains are [present] at every single death," Greene said.

Hospital chaplains, in addition to their other duties, are there to deliver good wishes and blessings to the family members of patients.

"We're there for the people involved," said Greene.

"This family hasn't lost this loved one before," Greene says she will tell the hospital's student chaplains. "Every single loss is a new one, and every single loss is a unique one. The strength of being able to stand with people in that incredible suffering and not get swept away by it that actually takes some training and some work."

Hospital chaplains working together in any given chaplaincy program may share a variety of faith backgrounds.

"I'm talking to you from an office where I work literally with a priest, a minister, and a rabbi," Rabbi Ben Lanckton, a staff chaplain at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, told LifeZette. The "interfaith nature" is one of the most satisfying parts of his job, Lanckton said.

"I work with ministers, priests, imams One of our chaplains is an ethical humanist, so she's officially an agnostic or atheist," he said.

"Even though I'm a rabbi, if a patient who's Catholic requests a chaplain on one of my floors, I go see that patient first and assess what the need is," Lanckton said. "For probably more than three-quarters of the cases, [people] just want to talk with someone who will listen sympathetically and spiritually about their situation. They don't really need [someone of] their own denomination."

The chaplain can refer the patient to another chaplain if a specific faith denomination is requested.Lanckton's assigned unit covers the pre- and post-surgery patients.

"As a chaplain, it's all about listening," Lanckton said.

"The toughest situation we face is when we get a blunt question about the meaning of suffering," Lanckton said. "And someone says to me, Chaplain, why is God doing this to me?' [or] Why does God allow suffering in the world?'"

The chaplains help patients and families try to find meaning in what's happening.

Hospital chaplaincy is "a sense of calling to the whole world," said Rev. Greene of Cleveland Clinic.

Self-Realization Is In Every Moment – Endless Satsang

Recently, I was talking with a teacher and friend about self realization. He made a simple comment that the soul is the sum total of all of our experiences. It struck me how this meant that every experience adds to our soul, and there is no experience that can detract from it. Since we share experiences with many other souls, that would mean that our souls overlap. Anywhere our experience overlaps, our souls would also overlap. And since we overlap with so many other souls, ultimately all souls are connected through this sharing of experience. So whenever a particular soul has a profound experience of awakened consciousness, or self realization, their experience of the totality of consciousness by definition includes all experiences and all the apparent souls out there.

Every experience is actually an experience of self-realization. In each and every experience, we are realizing a capacity or aspect of our soul, and by extension, an aspect of our true nature as Being. Since all there is, is Being, every experience is an experience of Being. Every experience adds to the totality of our understanding and realization of our true nature. There is no other possibility.

This is a dilemma if we believe there is a better, truer, more spiritual aspect of our Being that we want to be realizing. What if my anger is part of my true nature? What if my greed, lust, fear, sadness, confusion, and pain are all part of my true nature, along with all of the love, peace, and joy that are also part of Being? In hoping and waiting for a better experience, we may be overlooking the significance of our present moment experience, just as it is. It isn't that sadness and greed are equivalent to peace and joy, but every experience has significance, since every experience is an experience of our true nature.

The experiences that we may reject because we think they aren't the correct experience may actually be made up of the same peace, joy, and love we are hoping to have. We think of this world as a world of opposites, or dualities. But if we look more closely, we find that the so-called opposites are really just different amounts of one thing. Light and dark are an example: There is no such thing as dark, only light existing as photons. There are no darkons. You cant buy a flashdark and point it at things and make them disappear. However when there is little or no light, we call that dark, even though there is no such thing. Similarly, the only thing that exists is our true nature, which is filled with joy and love. If we are experiencing little or no joy or love, we may call that sadness or fear, although those are really only the relative absence of joy and love. And of course, there is often some joy in sadness and some love even in fear.

What if every experience is a unique jewel of our multifaceted Being? What if every experience adds to the abundance of our soul and moves us toward the greatness of our true nature? What if what you are experiencing right now is unfolding your self-realization in the most amazing and unique way? Perhaps there isn't some special experience of self-realization that is the way to realize true nature. Maybe every souls realization of true nature is meant to unfold in a completely unique way so that every souls experience can also add to the experience of the One Being that all souls are a part of, just as every experience adds to the richness of your soul.

We resist this perspective when we want spiritual realization to look a certain way. We want our realization to be like the dramatic experiences you read about in the spiritual biographies of the great masters and teachers. We use the fact that there are bigger experiences of self-realization to discount and reject the smaller experiences we are already having. And yet, the experiences we are having are also aspects of our Being. Everything from the most human thought or emotion to the most cosmic dimension of existence is an aspect of Being.

While there is freedom in experiencing a profound realization of an infinite dimension of our true nature, that freedom is only added to by an experience of a very human or limited dimension of that same true nature. Every experience adds to your soul, and no experience subtracts from your Being. This doesnt mean you dont discriminate between a small experience and a big one. Just as you can easily tell the difference between a teacup and a swimming pool, it is inherent in a small experience for it to feel small and for an infinite experience to feel infinite.

While the experience you are having right now while reading these words may or may not be the biggest realization of your life so far, it is the realization you are having right now. It will naturally feel big or small or somewhere in between. It will naturally have the specific qualities of this unique moment and not the qualities of any other experience. And yet, because it is happening right now, it is the most important realization you can have. In fact, it is the only realization you can have. It's too late or too soon to have any other experience than the one you are having right now, and this experience is making your soul richer and more fully realized than it was a moment ago.

While it plans to someday host a moon colony and space station, the proposed space-based nation Asgardia is starting small: The project will launch its first satellite this fall to store data for the nation's newly selected citizens. Some 200,000 were chosen from the more than 500,000 applicants.

During a press conference in Hong Kong on June 13, Asgardia's founder, Igor Ashurbeyli, revealed concrete details about the satellite: Asgardia-1 will be deployed from Orbital ATK's Cygnus OA-8 resupply spacecraft launching in September.

The satellite is 10 x 20 x 20 centimeters (3.9 x 7.9 x 7.9 inches) and has eight batteries and four deployable solar arrays. It will orbit at up to 500 kilometers (310 miles) above Earth. Texas-based space-services firm NanoRacks acts as the satellite's prime contractor and operator.

Someday, Ashurbeyli said, he hopes to create a planetary-defense constellation that will help protect against asteroids, solar flares and human-made space debris; this satellite is just the first step.

During the conference, Ashurbeyli also described plans for a space station and moon colony. "We plan to have this station in space and on the moon," he said. "It will be a four-level orbital station. I think the technical details will be defined by the Ministry of Science, which I hope we will have in the autumn of this year."

Ashurbeyli didn't provide additional details, but Asgardia has released imagery of the potential off-Earth locations. One image shows a rotating-wheel space station alongside an interplanetary rocket, and another shows, presumably, the interior of that space station with a wall of windows, a canal and greenery. The rocket has a habitation module and a lunar lander that looks like a cross between the NASA Orion spacecraft and the 1960s Apollo program lunar lander.

The approved applicants for Asgardian citizenship will be invited to vote on a constitution for the space-based nation on June 18. At that time, Ashurbeyli said, the organs of the proposed state the ministries, parliament and executive branch should be created. Ashurbeyli is calling June 18 Asgardian National Unity Day, and the date will be a public holiday if the state is realized.

More than 500,000 people applied for Asgardian citizenship online within 20 days when the project was announced in October last year. The organizers removed ineligible people, such as children, and were left with almost 200,000 people from about 200 countries. (Now, the website lists more than 210,000.) The approved applicants have each received personal certificates of Asgardia and can vote to approve the lawyer-designed constitution on June 18. The constitution was published on June 13.

Of the citizenship applicants, 80 percent are men, and the largest demographic comprises 18- to 35-year-olds. While there are applicants from almost every country on Earth, China has the most applicants, followed by Turkey, then the United States and then Italy. People can register as prospective Asgardians on the website.

Asgardia is being funded by Ashurbeyli's nonprofit Aerospace International Research Center (AIRC), based in Vienna. He said he expects that once Asgardia's constitution is approved, the state will be built by its citizen volunteers and Asgardia will become self-funding. Ashurbeyli said he expects to file for United Nations recognition by April 2018, if Asgardia's parliament and government have been set up and the satellite launched before then, he said during the conference.

In the meantime, AIRC owns Asgardian intellectual property. The company will collect, analyze and fund ideas and startups in space technology for the benefit of Asgardia. Ashurbeyli is also offering 300KB of free data storage on board Asgardia-1 for Asgardian citizens. Family members, up to a maximum of 400,000 people, will get 200KB. Another 1 million people will get 100KB.

"Sixty years after the launch of the first-ever artificial satellite, Sputnik, our own space satellite, Asgardia-1, will mark the beginning of a new space era, taking our citizens into space in virtual form, at first," Ashurbeyli said.

Ram Jakhu, the director of McGill University's Institute of Air and Space Law in Montreal, is the Asgardia project team legal expert. During the conference, he told the press that the Asgardian data stored on Asgardia-1 would be subject to U.S. privacy laws. The Asgardians' data will also be stored on future Asgardian satellites.
