On June 19 we commemorate the freedom of slaves after the abolition of slavery in Texas and the Confederate South. Here are the most inspirational sayings about Juneteenth.

Juneteenth is a portmanteau of June and nineteenth and commemorates the date when the Union General Gordon Granger arrived at Galveston Island, Texas with 2,000 troops to establish a federal presence in Texas and officially free slaves in the once Republic.

Juneteenth is also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day.

Texas was the last to hear that the Civil War was over because it was very isolated geographically. In fact, the Army of the Trans-Mississippi did not surrender until June 2, 1865 despite the Civil War being declared over nearly a month earlier on May 9.

Here are the most inspirational quotes:

1. the 19th of June wasnt the exact day the Negro was freed. But thats the day they told them that they was free And my daddy told me that they whooped and hollered and bored holes in trees with augers and stopped it up with [gun] powder and light and that would be their blast for the celebration. Haye Turner, former slave

2. Every year we must remind successive generations that this event triggered a series of events that one by one defines the challenges and responsibilities of successive generations. Thats why we need this holiday. Texas Democratic Rep. Al Edwards

3. Whenever I hear anyone arguing for slavery, I feel a strong impulse to see it tried on him personally. Abraham Lincoln

4. I freed a thousand slaves I could have freed a thousand more if only they knew they were slaves. Harriet Tubman

5. My people have a country of their own to go to if they choose Africa but, this America belongs to them just as much as it does to any of the white race in some ways even more so, because they gave the sweat of their brow and their blood in slavery so that many parts of America could become prosperous and recognized in the world. Josephine Baker, African-American entertainer and activist

6. The flag that was the symbol of slavery on the high seas for a long time was not the Confederate battle flag, it was sadly the Stars and Stripes. Alan Keyes

7. Now Ive been free, I know what a dreadful condition slavery is. I have seen hundreds of escaped slaves, but I never saw one who was willing to go back and be a slave. Harriet Tubman

8. I would have the Constitution torn in shreds and scattered to the four winds of heaven. Let us destroy the Constitution and build on its ruins the temple of liberty. I have brothers in slavery. I have seen chains placed on their limbs and beheld them captive. William Wells Brown, prominent African-American abolitionist

9. Slavery is theft theft of a life, theft of work, theft of any property or produce, theft even of the children a slave might have borne. Kevin Bales, Professor of Contemporary Slavery at the University of Nottingham

10. Where annual elections end where slavery begins. John Quincy Adams

June 19, 2017, is Juneteenth Independence Day and commemorates the anniversary of the abolition of slavery in Texas in 1865 and throughout the Confederate South.

Emancipation Avenue a home for economic dreams in Third Ward

Ella Russell's early taste testers were at the Eldorado Ballroom. Her church used to hold services in the historic Third Ward building, and Russell gave out free sweets she'd baked to the congregation.

That passion has since blossomed into a business. Now, Russell is keeping her Third Ward roots by selling cookies, brownies and "stuffedcups" - a cupcake with a cookie baked inside - at Crumbville, TX, on the corner of Elgin and Emancipation Avenue.

"Cupcakes and cookies, they'll sell anywhere," she said. "But I feel like in this area, there aren't enough businesses owned by people who look like me."

Russell said the area used to be filled with innovative black business owners. But many of those businesses closed. She'd like to see a resurgence of companies that can keep money in the community.

Economic development is a focus of local officials, too, with new street signs designating the area as an economic corridor. Officials gathered under these signs on Monday to celebrate changing the street's name to Emancipation Avenue. The street was previously named for Confederate officer Richard "Dick" Dowling. It runs by Emancipation Park, which just completed its $33.6 million makeover.

"I'm excited for what's happening in our city," Mayor Sylvester Turner said Monday. "This is the dawn of new days."

Spurring economic development is among Third Ward officials' focus moving forward. They want to create entrepreneurs and small-business owners from the community to ensure residents aren't displaced by gentrification.

"We don't want to just attract the creative class," said Minister Robert Muhammad, vice chairman of the board for Houston Southeast. "We want to create the creative class from within."

Houston Southeast, the management district for a region encompassing the Third Ward, the Museum District and the Texas Medical Center, is placing "economic corridor" on the street signs of areas where it wants to promote economic activity, said Hina Musa, executive director for Houston Southeast.

More details will be released July 14, but Musa said the region's corridors will be Emancipation, Almeda, Blodgett, Scott, Old Spanish Trail and Griggs.

Houston Southeast has been hosting workshops called Invest in My Own Community, or IMOC. Some assist novices in investing or developing, while masters workshops are available by invitation only to experienced people who will receive assistance with plotting out properties that are good for development and investment.

Musa said Houston Southeast is also trying to start a microloan or grant program to improve the faades of businesses.

Muhammad said the group also would like to train youth in trades such as plumbing, carpentry and landscaping. Further out, he envisions a "Silicon Bayou" that brings robotics, artificial intelligence, coding and other technology jobs to the area.

Similarly, the Emancipation Economic Development Council and Project Row Houses announced in January that they received $460,000 from the Kinder Foundation. The money was earmarked for seven projects, including a wealth-building symposium, affordable-housing initiatives and a neighborhood cleanup team ahead of Emancipation Park's grand reopening.

Project Row Houses is a community-based arts and culture nonprofit group. Its Artist Rounds program opens houses for artists to display their work, and a recent round included small business owners. Russell, with Crumbville, teamed up with artist Anthony Suber to create an art installation that was a bakery popup shop. It was open for four months.

That was the first time Russell's business had a physical location. After the event, Project Row Houses asked Russell to join its business incubation program. She opened Crumbville, selling her E-dub-a-licious Treats, on Oct. 8.

Monday was special for Russell, 43. Being born in Galveston on Juneteenth, a day that commemorates the 1865 announcement of the abolition of slavery in Texas, she was pleased to have a business across from Emancipation Park and the newly minted Emancipation Avenue.

"It means that I'm free to be a business owner," Russell said. "I'm free to be whatever I want to be. And I'm being it."

Development project aims to bring displaced African Americans back to Central District – KUOW News and Information

A coalition of black community groups chose "June-teenth" or "freedom day" for the ceremonial groundbreaking of a new affordable housing real estate project in Seattle's Central District.

June 19 is the day in 1865 when the abolition of slavery was announced in Texas.

The project has been dubbed The Liberty Bank Building" to honor Seattle's former African-American bank that once occupied a much smaller structure right where the new development will be built, on the corner of 24th Avenue and East Union Street. Liberty Bank folded in 1988.

Andrea Caupain, the CEO of Centerstone, one of the groups behind the project, said they want to encourage African Americans and others who've been priced out of the Central District to move back to the area, while still adhering to the city's first-come, first-serve rental rules.

"It's not going to be a situation where were only going to market to the African American community, or we will turn someone away who is not African American, Caupain said. But really how do we dive deeper and go specific and target the African American community, people who we know want to come back to the CD?"

Caupain said that means marketing their message into black community spaces that affordable housing information often doesn't reach. She said they're also in talks with local longtime black businesses about moving into Liberty's retail space.

We're looking at black businesses that have been in the Central area for a long time, that have a strong desire to stay in the community. We're also looking at black businesses that maybe were here before and had a desire to continue their business, but for various different reasons including affordability could not continue, she said.

Caupain said the work has been challenging, but the building represents a development model of inclusive efforts, with strong ties to Seattle's black community.

As one example, the building will house installations from nine different artists from the Central Area.

Centerstone has been working with Africatown, The Black Community Impact Alliance and Capitol Hill Housing on the Project. Caupain said they expect to start construction later this summer.

This Mom’s Response To Her Daughter Calling Her Fat Was Pitch … – HuffPost

Kids dont always have a filter when it comes to commenting on others appearances. Case in point: My son recently patted my belly and told me how big it was looking in my new sundress.

Because I want to raise a kid with a healthy body image, I did my best to remain calm and speak neutrally in response, whatever my personal feelings about what hed said. In that department, Allison Kimmeyis my new parenting role model for raising body-positive kids.

The 30-year-old self-help author and speaker on topics like self-love, self-care and personal empowerment posted recently on Instagram about how she reacted when her daughter called her fat.

My daughter called me fat today, she wrote in the caption of a photograph of herself and her 4-year-old daughter Cambelle in bathing suits by the water. She was upset I made them get out of the pool and she told her brother that mama is fat.

Instead of getting upset, the Florida mom asked her daughter to meet her upstairs for a chat. Then she explained that fat is something everyone has to protect their muscles and bones and give bodies energy. Some people have more fat than others, but no one is better or worse because of it.

She wrote, Fat is not a bad word in our house. If I shame my children for saying it then I am proving that it is an insulting word and I continue the stigma that being fat is unworthy, gross, comical and undesirable.

Kinney, who has a history of restrictive eating, yo-yo dieting and body dysmorphia, said she started her Instagram account in an attempt to inspire others with her self-love journey.

She also considers it part of her job as a parent to be a loud, consistent voice preaching body positivity.

Kimmey says that just as she is careful with the media and content that she consumes, she also tries to filter what reaches her children, though she acknowledges she can shelter them so much.

Your children are going to visit friends houses. Your children are going to hear nasty comments in school. Your children are going to consume the perfection ideal being shoved down their throats at every corner...and that is why it HAS to be a constant at home that you are keeping an open dialogue to build up their confidence, keep a clear and realistic body image ideal, and to embrace their own uniqueness while empowering them to be accepting of the differences of all humankind, she told HuffPost.

Kimmey has shared her empowering brand of parenting before. In March, a conversation she had with her daughter about her stretch marks went viral. During that conversation, Kimmey described her stretch marks as shiny, sparkly and pretty and referred to them as her glitter stripes.

Now she is releasing a series of body confidence books for children, starting with the soon-to-be-publishedGlitter Stripes, illustrated by body positive activist, Sanne Thijs.

Kimmey advocates for having these conversations with our children often in order to remove the stigma we have around certain words, and to broaden and question the beauty ideal.

I want parents to see that we are the loudest voices our children should hear, regardless of any outside noise, and it is vital that we choose our words carefully and that we are willing to have these hard conversations, she said.

As for me, I think I did a pretty good job responding to my son the day of the big belly incident. But with Kinneys inspiration, next time he says something about bodies, Ill be even better prepared to be the loudest voice he hears.

This Is Why Setting Personal And Professional Boundaries Is Good For Your Health – Huffington Post South Africa (blog)

Having the courage to set boundaries can sometimes mean the difference between a stressful day, job, experience and an empowering one. Boundaries come in many forms, with the most identifiable as personal and professional.

Personal Boundaries

These are the boundaries we set within and between our personal relationships. They are the spaces within which we allow things to happen or within which we participate with our own and others behaviour. Personal boundaries define how we allow ourselves to be treated (again, by others, and by ourselves).

Setting personal boundaries can be crucial to how we grow within our own self-esteem. If we feel disempowered by the relationships around us, our self-esteem suffers. A low self-esteem can impact everything from our health to our eating habits, to our stress levels and our personal relationships, as well as how achievable we feel our goals are. Many times, finding power comes in the form of one simple word. No.

When Oprah Winfrey turned 40, she said the most wonderful thing about it was that she learned how to say, NO. She learned, or rather finally garnered the courage to set personal boundaries within which she was going to work. She had the courage to look at, realise and structure boundaries around things which brought empowerment to her experience, distinguishing between those which drained her. She learned it was okay to recognise the importance of health and well-being, and that being able to use that one simple word in a healthy capacity reduced her stress levels.

Parenting, responsibilities, work or even social obligations (and most importantly how we perceive our roles in these circumstances) can waver the strength of our boundaries. In fact, many times, as we are all learning about ourselves and our limits as we go, we don't even know what our boundaries are when new situations arise.

What are your boundaries? Do you know what they are? Do you have a healthy relationship with, No? A healthy No allows strength to emerge from within it allows you space (in thought, breath, mind, body) to move toward being or to be your best self as well as to thrive within your personal and professional relationships: as a parent, as an employee, as a manager, as a person.

Professional Boundaries

Professional boundaries can feel complicated due to the hierarchy of authority in majority workplaces. There are aspects of professional boundaries that you, however, can control. Like how you structure your time. 'Instant' environments at work, can lead to increased feelings of pressure and stress, impacting negatively on our health and well-being. So, as always, where does your power lie?

If you are in the middle of writing a report and an email comes in with another request, followed by a text, followed immediately by a phone call what do you do? Our Instant environments make us feel like we need to answer and tend to all requests that cross our communication path, at the same time (the Instant environment can also have an effect of making people inconsiderately immediate in wanting their requests tended to).

This is where boundaries come in. Setting the clock, for example, can mean the difference between a stressful day that feels as if majority tasks were left incomplete, and one that produced results or that was at least participatory in achieving an end goal.

An example:

8-9am review tasks for the day, answer emails

(1 minute of stretching)

9-10am meetings

(1 minute of stretching)

10-12 work on reports

Lunch with a minute of stretching before you head back to the desk

1-2 return messages

(1 minute of stretching)

2-4 work on reports

(Stretch between hours)

4-5 answer emails, wind down, lay out tasks for the next day

This sample is flexible, but you get the idea.

It gives you control. You need boundaries that feed your strengths and maximise your ability to perform not compromise them.

Learning to set healthy personal and professional boundaries puts you on a road to better health and well-being, and can help decrease stress levels. When we consider that 80 percent of chronic disease is caused by lifestyle-related issues, setting personal boundaries is a simple way to empower yourself in the other direction of those kinds of health statistics.

Stay healthy!

Living Link receives donation of over R500 000 and helps the disabled – Rosebank Killarney Gazette

Ten intellectually disabled students have received the opportunity to transform their lives and build a better future.

In a partnership with the non-profit organisation, The Living Link and Engen, these students have commenced a year-long Adult Integration Programme aimed at integrating them into society, both in the workplace and their communities.

Engen donated R564 000 at an official ceremony held at The Living Link Centre in Parkhurst on 13 June. The Living Links managing director, Stanley Bawden said they will also make every effort to place the graduates in the workplace once they have completed their training in November. We strive to place our graduates in ordinary working environments, doing regular work and where salaries and benefits are real and reflect their work performance.

Engens corporate social investment manager, Mntu Nduvane said that because disability affects a comparatively small percentage of the population, it remains traditionally underfunded. As we enter Youth Month, Engen is mindful that this is a key area of need which is why we have moved to assist young adults living with disabilities and their families.

The Adult Integration Programme focuses on employment orientation, personal empowerment, lifestyle management and community survival. It also includes students doing job sampling. The Living Link also provides ongoing job coaching and training to both employer and employee.

Everyone in our country has a role to play in enhancing the lives of all citizens, especially those who are marginalised through disability. Our partnership with Engen will go a long way in helping to upskill and ultimately aid these disabled young adults to find employment and become contributing members of society, said Bawden.

By working together with the Living Link we hope to forge a future that is inclusive of all people where the marginalised have the opportunity to work and where conditions are created for dreams to be achieved and a brighter future for all South Africans to be manifested, said Nduvane.

The Latest: Technology CEOs urged to join Trump initiative – ABC News

The Latest on President Donald Trump's meeting with technology CEOs (all times local):

2:55 p.m.

Technology CEOs are being urged by White House officials to pitch in on President Donald Trump's effort to modernize government.

Trump senior adviser and son-in-law Jared Kushner welcomed technology executives to the White House on Monday for an afternoon of working groups. They are discussing issues like technology infrastructure, cyber security and visas for foreign workers.

Kushner says the CEOS are working on some of the country's biggest challenges.

Those attending include Apple CEO Tim Cook and the executive chairman of Google parent company Alphabet, Eric Schmidt. Also on hand is Trump's daughter and Kushner's wife, senior presidential adviser Ivanka Trump.

The gathering is the first event for a technology-focused effort within the White House Office of American Innovation. It seeks to overhaul government functions using ideas from the business sector.

6 a.m.

Technology CEOS are expected at the White House Monday for an event focused on modernizing government.

The White House said expected attendees include Apple CEO Tim Cook and Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos.

This will be the first event for a technology-focused group within the White House Office of American Innovation, which seeks to overhaul government functions using ideas from the business sector.

Jared Kushner, senior adviser and son-in-law to President Donald Trump, will oversee the event with Chris Liddell, a White House aide who directs the technology effort.

It comes after some technology executives clashed with Trump over his decision to exit the Paris climate accord. Leaders at Apple and Google were among the American corporate executives who appealed to the president to stay in the pact.

Remarks by President Trump During Roundtable with the American Technology Council – The White House (blog)

State Dining Room

5:22 P.M. EDT

THE PRESIDENT: Thank you very much. Its great to have you at the White House. And I just wanted to pass on word -- Otto Warmbier has just passed away. He spent a year and a half in North Korea. A lot of bad things happened. But at least we got him home to be with his parents, where they were so happy to see him, even though he was in very tough condition. But he just passed away a little while ago. Its a brutal regime, and well be able to handle it.

But I want to thank you all for being here, special people. Im really thrilled to welcome many of you for the first time, and certainly the first time meeting as the American Technology Council. Were joined by an incredible group of leaders on the absolute cutting edge of innovation, including many CEOs from the worlds most successful businesses.

We have approximately $3.5 trillion of market value in this room -- but thats almost the exact number that weve created since my election. (Laughter.) In fact, I think we have you beat by a little bit, which is a pretty good number. But I congratulate you all. Done an amazing job. Thank you for lending your time and your talent to the American people. A lot of ideas have come out of the room today, and a lot of ideas will over the next short period of time.

I also want to welcome Secretary Mnuchin, Secretary Kelly, Administrator Verma, and my Budget Director, Mick Mulvaney. Thank you all. Done a great job. I want to thank Jared and Chris -- Chris Liddell -- for assembling such a spectacular group of people. Theyre working very, very hard. I want to thank Ivanka for working so hard on it; its a real passion.

Our goal is to lead a sweeping transformation of the federal governments technology that will deliver dramatically better services for citizens, stronger protection from cyberattacks -- which we were just discussing in the Oval Office with a little bit smaller group. Thats a big problem, theres no question about it. Were going to be working on it and were going to solve the problem -- and up to a trillion dollars in savings for taxpayers over the next 10 years. Over a trillion.

Were embracing big change, bold thinking, and outsider perspectives to transform government and make it the way it should be, and at far less cost.

My administration has already taken very historic steps to modernize critical IT systems and make government more transparent. As an example, youre seeing what were doing with the airports, with all of the billions and billions of dollars that have been spent on planes flying all in the wrong directions -- were getting a change. Theyve spent many billions of dollars, and we are getting that whole system fixed. Money wasted over the last six or seven years -- billions.

VA Secretary Shulkin recently announced that were upgrading technology to allow the seamless transfer of veterans medical records from the Defense Department, which has been a huge problem for decades and decades for our great veterans. Well have it fixed very soon, but its been a problem for many, many decades. Across government, were fixing problems in months that others have not fixed in many, many years. And were just getting started.

Fifty years ago, our government drove the innovation that inspired the world and put Americans on the moon. Today, many of our agencies rely on painfully outdated technology, and yet, we have the greatest people in technology that the world has ever seen right here with us in this room. And most of them are just nodding as I say that. Theyre actually agreeing with me, which -- (laughter) -- thats interesting, Eric, right?

Government needs to catch up with the technology revolution. Were going to change that with the help of great American businesses like the people assembled. The businesses represented here today employ hundreds of thousands of American workers. Your innovation has shaped the modern world and created millions of jobs. America should be the global leader in government technology just as we are in every other aspect, and we are going to start our big edge again in technology - such an important industry. I view it from the standpoint of jobs and other things; you view it somewhat differently. But were all in the same ballpark. Its so important. So important.

My administration is embracing a new spirit of innovation that will make life better for all Americans. And when it comes to what were here for today, American technology, were working very diligently with everybody, including Congress, on immigration so that you can get the people you want in your companies. And its been a tremendous problem that youve had over the past long period of time. So were working very hard on that and well be able to solve that problem.

I want to thank everyone in the room for lending your time, again.

END 5:28 P.M. EDT

MIT President Reif attends White House technology meeting – MIT News

MIT President L. Rafael Reif today attended a technology conference convened by the White House Office of American Innovation. The meeting included leading corporate CEOs and other technology leaders, brought together to advise the White House on how technology and data can be used to improve government operations and on how best to anticipate future technologies and their implications for the government and society.

The participants broke into small groups to discuss issues and then met with U.S. President Trump at the end of the day.

Reif attended two of the small group discussions one titled Analytics/Dashboard, focused on how to use data and metrics to improve government services, personnel and technology; and one titled Future Trends, on how government can anticipate, integrate, and facilitate the development of emerging technologies, especially in fields such as machine learning and the internet of things (IoT).

As U.S. government leaders seek to use innovative technology to better serve the American people, its vital to make sure that they receive expert advice, both about the best ways to use these technologies to serve the public, and about how to anticipate and address the complex implications of their use, Reif says. As an institution with a mission of national service, and as a pioneer in many of the technologies under discussion at the White House from machine learning and AI to robotics and IoT MIT has an important role to play at the center of this conversation.

In support of MIT's mission, President Reif has spoken in recent months, through letters to the MIT community and published opinion pieces, on the importance of continuing to attract global talent to the United States, sustaining federal financial support for advanced scientific research, and continuing global cooperation on climate change.

Fiserv’s new digital technology can pay workers in real time – Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

DailyPay utilizes technology from Wisconsin-based Fiserv to give employees instant access to their earned wages.(Photo: DailyPay)

Work today, get paid today.

That is how the relationship between some companies and their employees can function, thanks to new digital technology developed by Fiserv Inc.

No more waiting until payday.

The Brookfield-based financial technology company said Monday that its Digital Disbursementsolution gives companies the ability to paytheir employees in real time.

DailyPay, a New York startup, is the first to announce it will use the Fiservdisbursement solution to integrate instant access features into companies existing payroll systems.

While some financial advisers point out dangers in workers havingimmediate access to their day's wages, Fiserv contends companies that partner with DailyPay for the new system recruit talent more quickly and reduce employee turnover by an average of 41%.

We are deeply committed to reducing stress for Americans living paycheck to paycheck, DailyPay CEO Jason Lee said in a statement.

It could mean being able to pay a bill on time and avoid a late fee, Lee said. For some, it could mean being able to put food on the table that day.

DailyPay's services areavailable for companies in every state, aspokesman for the startup said, and all of its users have the instant payment tool now.

DailyPayhas tailored the technology tosend payments to employee bank accounts inseconds.

Along with immediate payment, the toolgives companiesthe ability to send payments throughemail addresses andphone numbers, as well as throughpaper checks.

Fiserv manages the payment process and uses bank-grade security to ensure safe transactions, the company said in a statement.

Companies can use their existing payroll systems to facilitate theinstant payments without much setuptime, and employees just providebasic information such as their bank account numbers.

Employees get the wages sent to their "available balance" and can access the money by transferring it to their bank account.

Whatever money they transfer from their available balance is taken off the next paycheck. Transferring money before the time of the paycheck involves a a $1.25 starting transfer fee.

Erik Kroll, who owns the Milwaukee-based company Hilltop Financial Advisors, said he sees advantages of the real-time payment tool. However, Kroll, a certified financial planner, said that the daily access to paymentshould be used by employees sparingly.

"I wouldn't advise someone to rely on this, Kroll said. "It could reinforce some bad habits of spending more than what's coming in."

Such spending is sometimes inevitable, he said, especially for lower income earners.

For others, however, theymay not know how to manage their cash flow and taking out money every day may only exacerbate those money management issues, he said.

Having money foremergenciesand avoiding late fees involves tracking ones own expenses, cutting out unnecessary costsand puttingmoney into a savings fund, he said.

The feeling of securitythat you can access your money any day can be counter-intuitive to appropriate savings goals, he said, and may further encouragepeople to spend their money as it comes in.

Having daily access to earned wagesstill can benefitsavings efforts, Kroll said, if itis used as a bridge to a secure emergency fund.

Especially for people who can putonly a few dollars into their savings each paycheck, the daily access to money can help pay off surprise expenses without forcing them to dip into their savings, he said.

The key to using the DailyPay tool, Krollsaid, is using it only when you need it.

Fiserv offers the digital disbursements solution directly to companies, charging them on a per-transaction basis. Startup costs vary by transaction volume.

The technology allows companies such asDailyPay to offer paymentsolutions for companies to send money securely and efficiently, said Tom Allanson, president of electronic payments at Fiserv.

Our payments capabilities are helping enable the digital economyand helping businesses connect with their customers by enabling safe, reliable and fast transactions, Allanson said.

Norsk Titanium announces supply chain progress – Plattsburgh Press Republican

PLATTSBURGH Norsk Titanium has reached another milestone in its efforts to expand into the commercial aerospace-component market.

The company has established an industrial-scale supply chain to move high-quality, low-cost parts that are made through Norsk's rapid-plasma-deposition process and completed by the machining/finishing expertise of Mechachrome's Mirabel, Quebec, operation.

It is the result of a long-term agreement the two firms, signed last year to develop the processes needed to turn Norsk's near-finished 3D-printed titanium components into finished pieces.

FASTER, LESS COSTLY

Mecachrome is extremely proud and excited to collaborate with Norsk Titanium and be part of that journey towards the shift to production of a disruptive innovation, leading to shorter cycle times and competitive costs, Mecachrome CEO Arnaud de Ponnat said in a press release.

Norsk Titanium Senior Vice President Christopher Bohlmann said Mechachrome's expertise helped pave the way for its low-cost production of Federal Aviation Administration-certified components.

100-PERCENT YIELD

Earlier this year, Norsk landed a contract to supply components to Boeing for its 787 Dreamliner aircraft.

Their capability has allowed for greatly improved buy-to-fly ratios with a 100-percent machining yield on the first production lot," Bohlmann said.

"Mecachromes ability to achieve 100-percent yield with the extremely small machining margins of RPD is a testament to their capability."

That perfect yield builds on Norsk's ability to save companies time and material, compared to traditional forging and machining.

Norsk prints 3-D components that require minimal finishing compared to creating parts from larger blocks of material.

The two companies continue to work together on cost-improvement initiatives. They are bidding on production orders from multiple aerospace customers, both in Europe and North America.

PARIS SHOWCASE

Bohlmann previously told the Press-Republican that Norsk chose Plattsburgh as the site of its North American manufacturing operation in part due to its proximity to the Montreal aerospace sector and companies such as Mechachrome.

Norsk will have examples of its Boeing components on display at its booth at the Paris International Airshow from June 19 to 25, as well as a mock-up of the Merke IV machine used in its manufacturing process.

Three machines are presently operating at its facility in Air Industrial Park in Plattsburgh, with about 20 expected there by late 2017 or early 2018.

Final Fantasy XIV Stormblood Progress Report: Lost Connections – Kotaku

GIF

Since Final Fantasy XIVs Stormblood expansion launched in early access on Friday morning, Ive leveled a Red Mage from 50 to 60 and taken my first steps into the city state of Ala Mhigo. Imagine what I could have accomplished had the servers been anywhere near stable!

While the crux of the Stormblood expansion involves characters venturing into Ala Mhigo and the Asian-inspired Doma with the intention to free them from the oppression of the Garlean Empire, I spent precious little time in the new areas. This was mainly due to the fact that one of the major progression quests for the new lands was nearly impossible to complete for the first two and a half days of early access.

When a special cinematic solo quest begins, the game creates a special instance just for the player doing the quest. Slammed with players new and old all attempting to do the quest at once, the games servers were having trouble creating new instances, leading to players lining up or gathering around the quest giver, desperately trying to move on.

Some players made it through. Others were kicked back to the same area after the quests cinematic played, having to start the process over. The problem wasnt limited to the one quest, either. I spent a large chunk of Saturday trying to log back in after a Red Mage quest disconnected me from the game upon trying to enter it. I could log other characters in, but my poor Red Mage was stuck in an endless disconnect loop. As an added bonus, my server (Goblin) had a login queue for most of Saturday, so I was essentially lining up to be disconnected from the game.

Instead of spending time in the new lands, I did what I could in the older areas. First I logged in to my original character, Back Clawtooth, and fiddled around with his revamped skills.

The Stormblood expansion brings with it a massive change to the games skill system. Core powers and abilities for each job have been removed or consolidated in order to make the game more approachable and less complex. It seems to work, though theres a bit of a learning curve.

Unfortunately Back hasnt finished Final Fantasy XIVs story quests leading up to Stormblood, so I set him aside (for now) in favor of a new character.

This is Clan. Clan Destine. I created her for the expansion, leveled her to 60 and completed the games story using potions available in the games offline store for $25 each (one for experience level, one for story progress).

The idea was to take her through the new areas as a level 60 Black Mage, but when I hit the quest roadblock I decided to take her in another direction.

The Red Mage is an interesting class, balancing White and Black magics and using it to power ridiculously strong melee attacks. In groups its a lot of hanging back, rotating a series of spells to help fill both sides of an on-screen meter. Once filled, the Red Mage rushes into battle, takes some powerful swipes and then leaps right back out. Its casting damage plus melee damage, the best of both worlds as far as I am concerned.

The new jobs start at level 50, so I had to earn 10 levels before trying the new area quest again. That worked out rather well, as the older areas of the game where I performed repeatable Fates (dynamic spawning quests for large groups) in order to level were stable for most of the weekend. Leveling went by quickly, and the only real issues I ran into were some of the aforementioned instances.

It was not a smooth start for Final Fantasy XIV. There were times I couldnt connect to the game at all. Players reported the game crashing on PlayStation 4, requiring the entire thing be reinstalled in order to fix it. Game producer Naoki Yoshida took to the forums on Saturday, apologizing for the problems and ensuring players fixes were in the works.

I finally managed to complete that first story quest in the new area late last night. The crown around the NPC had vanished, and chat was lit with reports of success. Looks like the major issues should be cleared up for the expansion packs wide launch tomorrow.

I completed the initial set of quests in the area, which left Clan Destine a sliver below level 61. I hopped into the leveling queue in the hopes of getting a random dungeon group to help earn the extra experience points. After waiting over a half hour the instance began to load. Then . . .

Final Fantasy XIV Stormblood Progress Report: Lost Connections - Kotaku

Mason’s Mailbag: Areas of progress for Paxton Lynch, Trevor Siemian – DenverBroncos.com (blog)

You can tweet questions to me with the hashtag #AskMase or use the submission form to your right (if you're viewing on a standard browser) or at the bottom of the page if you're on the mobile site.

What is your evaluation of the quarterbacks so far? Are both of them progressing and improving? I'm asking you because you give a neutral opinion. There seems to be a narrative that only Paxton Lynch is progressing because that seems to be all that is written about except from your reports. You talk about both QBs.

-- Taryn O'Neil

In reflecting on the four weeks of OTAs and minicamp, both were better when they finished than when they began. In particular, Lynch improved in his touch passes and his resiliency; he was much better at shaking off a mistake and resetting his focus for the next play than he was last year. This is as much a result of increased maturity that any second-year quarterback would have as it is of his comfort level in the system. He also showed palpable growth in getting to his second read and making quicker decisions.

As for Trevor Siemian, I liked the patience he showed in the pocket, which gave him the opportunity to identify late-opening receivers downfield. Siemian was able to make some big plays to tight ends and other inside targets down the seam because he gave them a chance to get some separation. It's also clear how quickly he ingests a tip from a coach and implements it into his play.

One example of this came during a minicamp practice. Siemian had one pass that was knocked down at the line of scrimmage that could have been avoided if he had released the football at a higher point. On the next play, the ball came out higher, soared past two outstretched hands from defensive linemen, and a completion and a first down followed.

There was much to like about both quarterbacks, but as is the case with all young passers, much needs to be improved. The phrase "work in progress" will likely apply, no matter who ends up starting Week 1.

I'm finally getting up to Denver from Vegas this year for the preseason game against the Packers. What are some good Broncos-related things to do before the game? Possible autographs, sights, activities, food, etc. Thanks!

-- Wendell Hayes

This page has some information on activities that take place before the game at the stadium. Autographs from current players will be tough to get because it's a game day, but you can greet them as they arrive at the southwest tunnel.

If you want to get there early and take part in the team's official tailgate, head to the Mile High Mountain Village, which is accessible through Gate 4 (the northwest gate) and features an all-you-can-eat menu for $20 (if your ticket is bought in advance).

You should also take time to visit the Mile High Monument, the scaled-down replica of Mile High Stadium that sits in the north parking lot.

Beyond the stadium, I recommend using Visit Denver's website page on "things to do" as a starting point for finding ideas that are tailored to your personal tastes. That said, August is a perfect time of year to visit Rocky Mountain National Park, hit Red Rocks or spend a day on a hiking trail. You can't go wrong with any of those.

As much as we've all heard about the left tackle competition, I don't believe I've heard/read one lick of how Menelik Watson is looking so far?

-- Tyler German

So far, so good. Good health is going to be the key for him, but if he can avoid the injuries that plagued him, he could be an effective power blocker at right tackle, which is where he received all of his work during OTAs and minicamp. If the Broncos keep Ron Leary at right guard, the right side of their line has some road-grading potential that could clear plenty of holes for their running backs.

When does training camp begin?

-- Deb Grenzke

The exact dates and times will be announced soon, but the earliest it can begin is Thursday, July 27. Teams cannot hold their first practice until two weeks before the preseason opener, which for the Broncos comes on August 10 at Chicago.

This QB battle between the Trevor Siemian and Paxton Lynch is heating up and is as savory as a chicken fried steak and potatoes on a cold Friday evening, That being said, I want to know who are you rooting for and why?

-- Marc Aguirre

That is a tremendous analogy, but I have no rooting interest. It is unwise for someone who must accurately report and analyze the quarterbacks' daily performances to pick a side.

Students recognize progress by Vanderbilt four years after high-profile assault – WZTV

NASHVILLE, Tenn.

This week marks four years since a high-profile sexual assault on an unconscious woman in a dorm at Vanderbilt University.

Four men were accused in the case. Brandon Banks' case is the third one to go to trial. Two have already stood trial for their roles in the assault.

Vanderbilt said it's made great strides to improve the culture of reporting and preventing sexual assault on campus since then. Students agree.

Approach any student on Vanderbilt's campus four years later, and they've heard about the case.

"My grade, we were applying to college when it was going on," Vanderbilt Senior Michael Nwauche said. "I think most people know about it."

"What happened all these years ago was so unfortunate," Vanderbilt Sophomore May said. "I think our university has grown and changed so much for it, and I feel proud now. I feel proud to represent that."

Students said it's made the school a safer place, thanks to an expanded Project Safe Program, bystander intervention education, and an online sexual assault training module for all new students.

One area that they feel needs improvement would be how students are notified when sexual assaults are reported.

Right now, an email goes out explaining where and when the incident occurred. They feel it's too generic.

"It's a little impersonal, and I don't know if it's causing a change," Vanderbilt Senior Jimmie Sanders. "I think it's just getting people used to it. It makes it just an everyday thing, which it shouldn't be."

"I don't think 'brush it off' is the right term, but it is just a stock email," Vanderbilt Senior Kelsey Clinton said. "There really is no personal aspect to it."

Vanderbilt University declined a request for an interview, but provided the following statement:

The tragic sexual assault that occurred on our campus four years ago was a critical moment for our university. The incident raised additional awareness of and dialogue around the issue of sexual violence, and caused us to reflect on who we are as a campus community and to consider what additional actions we could take to promote a culture of respect, civility and decency. Continuously strengthened efforts to prevent sexual assault, provide support for victims, and enhance the safety and security of our campus are ongoing.

All incoming first-year, transfer, graduate, and professional students are required to complete an interactive online educational module on preventing sexual violence that also introduces students to Vanderbilt policy and Tennessee state law, on and off-campus resources, and law enforcement and university reporting options. Sexual assault prevention is addressed during the week-long orientation activities for first-year students. Our Project Safe Center for Sexual Misconduct Prevention and Support was expanded from a longstanding program at our Womens Center to a free-standing center with increased staffing and resources. Building on our bystander intervention education efforts that began in 2009, bystander intervention training is offered to the campus community throughout the year. The Project Safe Center also offers a dating violence awareness-raising and prevention program, as well as programs on understanding effective consent, supporting survivors, setting boundaries, and maintaining healthy relationships.

Michael Cases wife, Sara, has been by his bedside every day ever since the May 16 shooting.

Hes had multiple surgeries. Hes able to talk, unable to eat solid foods but on occasion walking around. Doctors say he may get out of the hospital within a couple of weeks.

The shooting occurred May 16 at Napervilles commuter rail station. A 79-year-old train passenger from Wisconsin is charged with shooting Case after Amtrak employees tried to prevent the man from getting off at the wrong stop.

Tebow remains a work in progress

Columbia, S.C.

Tim Tebow's first half of his first professional baseball season is complete. The former Heisman Trophy winner appears to have made progress with the New York Mets Class A affiliate.

Tebow began the season like a storybook star, hitting two home runs in his first four games as an outfielder-designated hitter for the Columbia Fireflies. The Mets prospect has had just one homer in the 10 weeks since. Yet, he's continued to grind heading into the league's All-Star break this week.

He had a five-game hitting streak the longest of his career and helped the Fireflies finish second in the Southern Division of the South Atlantic League. The team entered Sunday with a half-game lead, yet lost to the Charleston (South Carolina) RiverDogs while Greenville beat Rome (Georgia) 4-3 to claim the Southern Division.

A look how Tebow has fared this week and this season:

Highlights: Tebow had a hit in five straight games, his longest streak of the season. His best game this week was Wednesday in a 6-2 victory at Greenville. Tebow went 1-for-2 with a double and two RBIs. He also walked twice.

At the plate: Tebow's average held steady at .224 after going 5-for-23 for the week at the plate. He had eight strikeouts during the week, including three in Sunday's 5-1 loss when a victory would've earned the Fireflies the division's first-half title and the playoff spot that goes with it.

On the season: Tebow is 45-for-201 on the season with 21 RBIs and 66 strikeouts.

In the field: Tebow made his fifth error of the season this week with a bad throw in a loss to Charleston.

Bat toss: Tim Tebow's most impressive feat may have been the inadvertent bat toss Saturday night during a 3-0 loss at Charleston. Tebow lost the grip on the bat and sent it soaring deep into the second level seats on the first base side of the stands. Tebow, unfazed, found another bat but struck out in Columbia's defeat.

What's next: After a couple of days off, Tebow and the Fireflies pick up the second half of the season at home with a four-game series against the Kannapolis (North Carolina) Intimidators.

Seahawks’ DeShawn Shead making great progress, still not expected for start of season – NBCSports.com

Seahawks cornerback Deshawn Shead tore an ACL in his knee during Seattles Divisional Round playoff loss to the Atlanta Falcons in January.

Shead was unable to participate in any of the teams offseason program as he continues to recover from surgery. Head coach Pete Carroll said following the conclusion of mini-camp last week that Shead is progressing well from the injury at the five-month mark in the recovery process.

Hes making great progress, Carroll said. He is one of the all-time best healers. He applies himself as well as a person can do in terms of getting back. Hes got all the grit and the perseverance about making it through this as quickly as you possibly can, so hes doing great.

Shead will be just over seven months removed from surgery when the regular season starts in September. Carroll said he didnt expect Shead to be ready to play by then.

No, I dont think so, he said. I dont think well be pushing him on that regard. Maybe he does it, I should never say no to him. Maybe he can pull it off. Well see.

Shead wasnt tendered as a restricted free agent following the injury but elected to re-sign with Seattle on a one-year deal in March. Shead started 15 games last year for Seattle and recorded 81 tackles with 14 passes defended, one interception and one forced fumble. Starting the season on the Physically Unable to Perform list is a distinct possibility.
