Bitcoin Miners are Rejecting Segwit For Non-Technical Reasons – The Merkle

It has become evident that miners are not opposed to the Bitcoin Core development teams transaction malleability fix Segregated Witness (Segwit) given the overwhelming support towards Segwit2x, a proposal made by Barry Silbert-led Digital Currency group and 57 other companies that include major mining pool operators such as Bitmain.

The hashrate signaling the activation of Segwit2x is currently over 90 percent at the time of writing. The proposal entails the activation of Segwit at an 80 percent activation threshold by September and the execution of a 2MB block size increase hard fork six months thereafter. The key component of the proposal is the activation of Segwit and given the 90 percent support from miners, it is quite clear that miners are in favor of activating Segwit.

One condition requested by the miners is the execution of a 2MB block size increase hard fork which derived from the Hong Kong scaling agreement that was established in February of 2016. The majority of miners believe that the expected 75 percent optimization of block size through the activation of Segwit and additional scaling via second layer payment channels such as Lightning are not sufficient to address the explosive growth of the bitcoin industry and user base.

Yet, the rapidly increasing support towards Segwit2x has proven to the industry and community that miners are not opposed to Segwit for technical reasons. In fact, a major mining pool operator ViaBTC, recently stated:

The main reason to refuse Segwit is because the roadmap of bitcoin core, not the technical detail.

The development team behind ViaBTC revealed that the company along with many China-based mining companies such as Bitmains Antpool have been opposed to Segwit due to their rejection of the Bitcoin Core development teams roadmap. In particular, ViaBTC wrote in a blog post earlier this year that it does not approve Bitcoin Cores roadmap of utilizing Segwit as a scaling solution.

Segwit, which is a soft fork solution for malleability, cannot solve the capacity problem. From Core members public statements, they didnt attach necessary importance on this issue. Even if Segwit after activation can slightly scale up block size with new transaction formats, its still far behind the demand for the development of Bitcoin network, wrote the ViaBTC development team.

However, one of the solutions offered by Segwit is the infrastructure for two layer solutions such as Lightning which are expected to open doors for a wide range of services and applications that can operate on top of bitcoin and most importantly, significantly lower transaction fees through the usage of payment channels.

Similar to the viewpoint of Bitmain, ViaBTC claimed that the implementation of Lightning and payment channels will lead to centralization of transactions by deviating from direct on-chain peer to peer transactions to payment channel-based transactions.

To this date, Bitcoin Core, the industry and community have been straightforward with the scaling roadmap. Activate Segwit to strengthen security measures by eliminating transaction malleability and providing better infrastructure for hardware wallets and establish a working platform for two layer solutions for long-term scalability.

The scaling debate has started to see some progress as miners agreed to activate Segwit given a condition to increase the block size by 2MB. Given that the mining community is opposed to the sole activation of Segwit due to non-technical reasons, over the next few weeks, the bitcoin industry is likely to see major progress with scaling.

Bitcoin’s Legal Status Around the World – The Merkle

When bitcoin was created in 2009, it was supposed to act as a peer-to-peer cash system, but it has taken on a different form. To earn bitcoin, a person has to act as a miner, which involves them using their computers energy to maintain the blockchain. Bitcoin would therefore act as the reward for this computing power. As more people started to be interested in bitcoins operation, they started to trade it like a financial asset, for example, a stock.

This is when bitcoin really became a phenomenon, and it is now among the top google searches worldwide. For more information on how the bitcoin has emerged, we advise you to take a look at how Investoo explains the history of bitcoin in their infographic. The authorities are also divided on their perception of bitcoin, with some embracing its applications, many still sceptical and a small portion who want nothing to do about it. In fact, these may be the ideal classifications through which to study bitcoins legal status.

A few countries have accepted bitcoin and have decided to actually create laws that govern bitcoin transactions. The first country to completely accept bitcoin was Japan. Starting on the 1st of April, bitcoin was considered a legal form of payment in Japan, with several public institutions accepting it as currency. The laws governing banking have yet to change, but these are also being considered in order to make bitcoin even more usable.

India seems to be next in line to legalizing bitcoin, now that the government has agreed to regulate bitcoin. The Indian government has agreed that regulating bitcoin could be beneficial and is currently creating the laws to do so. The Reserve Bank of India is also considering using the blockchain technology in banking.

These are those countries with set laws regarding bitcoin, although they dont take it as an actual currency as Japan does. Most countries around the world fall into these category. In the US, for example, the CFTC has classified bitcoin as a commodity while the US Treasury Department sees it as a money service business (MSB). None of these financial regulators considers it as a currency, but it should still be reported under tax returns.

In Europe, nearly all of the countries have bitcoin regulations, which are mainly supposed to minimize financial crimes like money laundering, but not to legalize its use as currency. The same trend can be observed in the Americas from Canada and Greenland all the way down to Argentina.

To the east, Asia and countries in Oceania also have some form of regulation regarding bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies, again, just to prevent financial crimes. Bitcoin regulation has always been contentious in Russia, but the countrys central bank has finally put in place regulations that consider the cryptocurrency as an asset.

Only a few countries, six to be exact, have completely banned bitcoin, claiming it is very close to being a currency. One notable example is Iceland, which has the largest bitcoin mines worldwide but residents are not allowed to buy bitcoins. Surprisingly, one can own bitcoins by mining, but not buy bitcoins from a foreign exchange. This is an attempt to prevent capital flight out of Iceland. The other five countries in this category are Bolivia, Ecuador, Bangladesh, Kyrgyzstan and Vietnam.

It is unlikely that bitcoin becomes widely accepted as a currency any time soon. Its decentralized nature makes it difficult to regulate, taking away the central banks authority. In Satoshi Nakamotos 2008 paper that created blockchain and subsequently bitcoin, this was the main advantage of cryptocurrency, but they wont relinquish their control over money supply. There are lots of arguments for either side of legalizing bitcoin, but we cannot tell what will happen in the future, merely wait and watch as the events unfold.

How to Use Your Bitcoin Wallet to Get Free Coins – 99 Bitcoins (blog)

Few things in life are as appealing as free money. For that reason, few things set off as many alarm bells as the promise of free money! After all, if something sounds too good to be true, it probably is Right?

We usually dont post these type of posts but in this case, the offer of free money has been tested by our team to begenuine and safe! The amounts on offer are alsoworth your time, assuming you hold a fair amount of bitcoins.

Note: the sums mentioned in this article depend on the current market value of Byteball ($800), so your precise reward will vary over time you can either keep your free altcoins or instantly convert them to Bitcoin, another altcoin, or fiat.

Does this still sound too good to be true? Well, there are a couple of minor strings attached:

1) Some manageable privacy risk, which well show you how to mitigate, and

2) Performing a couple of moderately-advanced wallet functions, which well guide you through in detail.

As bootstrapping is the hardest part of launching any new cryptocurrency, the successful distribution of coins to new users is critical. If nobodys using a new coin, then it doesnt matter if it has amazingly innovative technology, skilled developers, or a passionate core community.

Metcalfes law states that the value of a (telecommunications) network is proportional to the square of its users, and this law is equally applicable to cryptocurrency.

2 users = 1 connection, 5 users = 10 connections, 12 users = 66 connections, etc.

Its clear from the above diagram that the busiest network is the most useful, therefore the most valuable and most likely to attract ever more users in a positive feedback loop. As the altcoin market is beyond saturated 756 and counting competition for users is incredibly fierce

Hopefully its starting to make sense why certain coins are just given away and your too good to be true alarm is fading!

As a distribution method, giving away quantities of a new coin to Bitcoin holders individuals with a proven interest in cryptocurrency is perhaps the surest way to build an initial base of receptive users. If the new coin also delivers (in terms of technology, economy, interest and so on), it stands a great chance of gaining the initial traction necessary to rise above its competitors.

Byteball (GBYTE) was released in September of 2016 and is notable for not using a blockchain to order transactions, but rather a Directed Acyclic Graph (DAG). If youve ever mined Ethereum you may be familiar with this term. Indeed, Byteball is sometimes touted as the Ethereum-killer, as it offers lightweight peer-to-peer smart contracts. These contracts enable conditional payments, prediction markets, insurance, betting and various bot-operated markets from within the standard client. Byteball also provides a stealth-coin asset, known as Blackbytes.

DAG-chain example from the Byteball white paper, G being the genesis unit.

Every full moon, youll get free byteballs and blackbytes for every full bitcoin over which you can prove ownership fractions dont count. The next drop will occur at around 4:07 AM (UTC) on July 9th 2017. Each bitcoin will earn you 0.0625 byteballs (currently worth around $50) and 0.132 blackbytes (currently worth around $2.50). These Byteball drops will continue through 2017 and perhaps into 2018, until all GBYTE is awarded. Roughly 25% has been distributed thus far, so this is a medium-term, repeating opportunity!

Download and install the correct Byteball wallet for your system. All major platforms, including mobile, are supported. Opt for the light / quick wallet if prompted. If running on a 32-bit version of Windows, you can try this 32-bit test version of the Byteball client software.

After installation, open the wallet and click this link on the Byteball wallet page:

This will add the Transition bot to your Byteball wallet. This bot handles the assignment of new byteballs and blackbytes to your wallet, based on your bitcoin holdings (as well as any existing byteball or blackbyte holdings well cover this aspect later).

An initial address will be automatically created by your wallet. Now its time to talk with the bot!

If the bots window isnt already open, click the Chat tab at the bottom right corner of the wallet interface.

Then select the Transition Bot as your new conversation partner (dont expect scintillating repartee but you can look forward to some free coins!)

An interaction with the bot is now initiated. The first step, as the bot explains, is to give the bot your Byteball address. This address was automatically generated and named by your wallet previously. Click the ellipsis bubble next to the text input bar and then select Insert my address

32 character wallet addresses is blurred for privacy reasons.

The bot then requests a small Bitcoin payment to a Bitcoin address controlled by the Byteball team. While this is a viable method to prove ownership, theres another method which is both faster and free message signing.

At this point, familiarity with the functions and features of your Bitcoin wallet will be extremely helpful. As there are so many Bitcoin wallets available, its impossible for this guide to cover all of them. We will demonstrate how to sign for an address using the Bitcoin Core full wallet and the Electrum light wallet. If using a different Bitcoin wallet, please consult its documentation for help on the following 3 steps

In order to know which addresses to give the bot and sign for, its necessary to examine all the addresses contained within your Bitcoin wallet addresses. Note that so-called change addresses may not be displayed by default within your wallet.

Unless all your Bitcoin payments were received by a single address (which is not recommended for privacy reasons), your wallets balance will be composed of amounts held within various addresses under your wallets control.

Its necessary to inform the Transition bot of every address containing a significant amount of Bitcoin. These amounts will be totalled by the bot to determine how many byteballs and blackbytes youre eligible to receive.

You may display all your Core addresses which hold value by opening the Console and entering the listunspent command:

Click Help then select the Debug window.

Select the Console tab then enter the listunspent command.

Core will then list non-empty addresses and their values. Note down which addresses contain funds (copy-pasting the info into a text file is the easiest way). This list is especially useful for finding change addresses not automatically listed by the Core wallet in Step 8.

If the Addresses tab isnt visible, click the Wallet menu and then click Addresses.

Ensure that the Receiving and Change lists are expanded.

Now you can view all the addresses which hold your bitcoins, not just the receiving addresses which your wallet regularly displays. Were getting under the hood of your Bitcoin wallet here; understanding how change addresses work will help you to improve your privacy in future.

Combining multiple addresses into a single address can save a lot of time, depending on the number of addresses you intend to sign for. It takes about one minute to complete the signature process for each address, so decide accordingly.

To consolidate your addresses, simply send all your bitcoins to an address under your control. This should be a new or existing receiving address within a wallet you own.

Caution: perform this step well in advance of the next Byteball drop at least a week in advance to be on the safe side. If your consolidating transaction isnt confirmed by the time the drop occurs, youll miss out on the opportunity. Wait for a lull in Bitcoin network activity these usually occur over weekends and consult our guide for info on setting an appropriate fee.

The same private key used to authorise payments from a Bitcoin address may also be used to create an un-forgeable cryptographic proof which links that text with that particular address. This process is known as signing and its entirely secure see the below section, A Note on Signing Security Concerns.

Unfortunately, some personal wallets and most exchange wallets dont feature signing functionality. If your wallet doesnt support signing, youll either have to send the suggested micropayment to the Transition bots Bitcoin wallet or transfer your bitcoins to a wallet which does support signing.

This BitcoinTalk forum post, although slightly out-dated, provides a lot of helpful information on which wallets support signing, as well as how to sign with them. Heres how the process works, in 3 simple steps:

1) This first step requires a little copying-and-pasting of addresses between your Byteball and Bitcoin wallets.

The Byteball bot asks for a Bitcoin address. Give it one which contains BTC. The bot will then ask you to sign your auto-generated Byteball address, using the provided Bitcoin address.

2) Heres how to sign your Byteball address using your Bitcoin address(es):

Select File menu then the Sign message tool.

For Part 1, click the left button to select from a list of receiving addresses (listunspent reveals which contain funds).

Clicking the right button will paste any change address you copied from thelistunspent command run in the wallets Console (Step 6).

Select the Tools menu then the Sign / verify message option.

Paste the relevant addresses and click Sign. Now copy the output.

Signing is a useful operation, in the event you ever wish to prove ownership of a Bitcoin address. However, as the Core wallet advises, you should always name and date any statements you sign, particularly those with legal implications.

In this case, your signature can only be used to associate your Bitcoin addresses with a Byteball address. This is unlikely to cause you any problems in future, although do see the cautionary note contained in the below section, A Note on Privacy Concerns.

Get the signed message and paste it to the Byteball Transition Bot. If all goes well, the bot will let you know:

The Bot now knows you own the particular Bitcoin address you signed for!

If you were using a consolidated Bitcoin address, the process is now complete! If not, repeat Steps to 6 9 until youve signed your Byteball address with all your value-containing Bitcoin addresses.

Visit this website and paste your Byteball address into the field provided. Within a few minutes of completing the signing procedure, itll display the total amount of byteballs and blackbytes you can expect to receive in your Byteball wallet when the drop occurs.

Multiply your number of complete bitcoins by the expected byteball reward and compare the result by the total displayed by the website. If the website displays less than expected, it can only mean that youve forgotten to sign for one or more addresses. Note that theres no benefit for including address amount which wont bring your total above (integer) BTC.

Once you have your free GBYE, you must decide whether to hold it or sell it! Below are some points which may help you to decide!

Daily prices of Byteball on Bittrex, its biggest market. Note the run-up to June 9th (crosshaired) and the subsequent dip and recovery.

Its up to the individual to weigh the above points and come to a decision. Good luck!

It occurred to this author that, if the Byteball wallet were a particularly crafty piece of malware, it might trick users into providing signatures which could be used to authorise a transactions from users Bitcoin wallets and drain them! However, this concern may be safely dismissed, for the following reasons:

1) Six Byteballs distributions have been completed thus far, with no reports of any such malicious activity.

2) The Byteball wallet generates the text to be signed (specifically, your Byteball address) before requesting any signatures from your Bitcoin wallet. It would have to a remarkably sophisticated malware to know which of your

3) The following conversation with Bitcoin Core developer, Gregory Maxwell, in which he confirms that preventions against such a signature attack have been implemented in Bitcoin:

HeySteve: is it possible to construct a message to be signed by a bitcoin address, such that the signed message could also be a signature used to authorise a transaction?

gmaxwell: If by signed by a bitcoin address you mean the standard signmessage functionality, then the answer is No because we very carefully constructed signmessage so this could never be possible.

What transactions are signing is sha2(sha2(masked transaction)) and what signmessage signs is sha2(Bitcoin signed message: || message)

(I might be slightly wrong about the exact string.)

I think the very early draft of that functionality didnt do that e.g. sha2(message), and someone (probably me or Peter Todd) pointed out that you could be tricked into signing something that was actually a transaction hash.

HeySteve: yes, that was my worry. I signed a series of 32 character altcoin addresses using my Bitcoin addresses

gmaxwell: Yea, were looking out for you. 🙂

If you follow the above procedure, the Byteball developer and anyone he shares the information (willingly or otherwise) will be able to associate your IP address with all Bitcoin addresses for which you signed. Further, it would be possible for other addresses you own to become associated with your linked addresses.

You may mitigate these issues immediately after the drop occurs by anonymizing your bitcoins.

The Fairness of a Bitcoiner Drop Distribution

Effectiveness isnt the only criteria for judging a coins distribution. Allegations of an unfair or selfish distribution can harm a coins reputation over the long term. Distributing new coins to holders of existing coins is arguably the fairest way to distribute a new coin, assuming the initially held coins were fairly distributed. Compare this method to the alternatives:

1) Mining

Proof of Work mining, performed on a CPU, was Satoshis original design for Bitcoins distribution. This method was perfectly fair in that any interested party with a computer could participate and earn their share of coin for contributing to the security of Bitcoins blockchain.

However, the advent of ASIC technology changed the game; only those with major investment into mining facilities in areas with cheap power are able to profitably mine nowadays.

In response to ASICs, many altcoins implemented ASIC-resistant mining algorithms. These restrict mining to those with powerful graphic cards generally accessible and relatively affordable tech, with numerous applications. This ensures a fairly healthy distribution of coins over time, except in the case of pre-mined coins. Such coins reserve some percentage of their total issuance for developers up to 100% in the case of Ripple.

2) ICOs

Initial Coin Offerings are essentially the pre-sale of coins / tokens for a project in development; like a crypto Kickstarter. This is currently a common if questionable distribution strategy for new projects. ICO developers tend to hype their project to the max to attract as much initial funding as possible. When (or if) the project launches, buyers get their coins which then usually crash in price immediately. In rare cases, price recovers to trade above its ICO level.

The ICO Special lots of froth, not much else!

Many ICOs are based on Ethereum, which was itself partly distributed as an ICO as well as pre-mined. The spectacular failure of the DAO, which led to the loss of over $60 million and the bifurcation of the Ethereum network, doesnt seem to have dampened enthusiasm for ICOs. Currently the Bancor project has raised a record $153 million and ICOs have become something of a mania Be wary of investing in such projects; many will turn out to be catastrophic money burners!

If youve tried this method yourself please let me know your experience in the comment section below!

Good luck!

Can China’s central bank mint an answer to bitcoin? – South China Morning Post

The love-hate relationship of Chinas central bank with digital money shows no signs of resolving soon, as investors continue to back the industry leading bitcoin while Beijing lays the foundation for its own sovereign cryptocurrency.

The technological underpinnings of an electronic currency hold a strong allure for a government struggling to keep a tight grip on capital outflows, but that same technology makes digital money resistant to centralised control, industry experts say.

The Peoples Bank of China (PBOC) is struggling to maintain some rhetorical consistency. Bank governor Zhou Xiaochuan said in February last year that a digital currency must be issued by the central bank and the PBOC had been pouring money into the study of blockchain technology. Following two years of research, the bank had devised a test of its own digital currency and by the end of last year had set up an in-house research institute headed by a former deputy director at the banks payment department.

Bitcoin price triples since start of year to break through US$3,000 amid rising global demand

In a recent speech, Yao Qian, a PBOC official who heads the research institute, called for prudent tolerance towards regulating the virtual currency industry while speeding up the issuance of its sovereign digital currency.

Ten years ago, the value of 10,000 bitcoins could buy a piece of pizza. Now the price of one bitcoin is more than one unit of gold, Yao said. But the mainland also needed to provide an investment opportunity for companies that sought to rely on cryptocurrency market to make initial public offerings, where they offer digital tokens to raise capital. At least its better than buying some trash stocks, Yao said.

This perspective is in stark contrast to the banks hostility toward bitcoin in December 2013 when it issued a notice prohibiting all banks and payment service providers from accepting it as a way of payment. Bitcoins price immediately crashed and didnt bounce back until late last year.

It remains deeply volatile, with rampant speculation on the mainland, which produces most of the worlds bitcoins and counts the largest number of its investors, fuelling much of that fluctuation.

In January, prices plunged by about 40 per cent within a few hours. The PBOC subsequently raided three mainland bitcoin exchanges to check for foreign exchange violations and money-laundering.

It has since maintained a tight grip on bitcoin trading by requiring the exchanges to charge transaction fees, stop lending to investors for trading, and stop coin withdrawals, a ban that was only lifted in June. The exchanges were also required to adopt additional rules to strengthen verification of the personal information of clients seeking to make withdrawals.

Chinas bitcoin market: another ticking time bomb?

As a result, the Chinese mainlands share of global bitcoin trading fell to 16 per cent from 80 per cent, according to Huobi, a major bitcoin exchange on the mainland. Despite the central banks heavy-handed control over trading, the price of bitcoin continued to rise, thanks to investors from Japan and South Korea, and hovered around 19,000 yuan (US$2,780 or HK$21,690) this week more than triple its level earlier this year.

In 2017, essentially, the PBOC made bitcoin trading in China less desirable, compared to what happened in 2013, Arthur Hayes, chief executive of Hong Kong-based Bitcoin exchange BitMEX, said. It shows that regulators can only slow down the on-ramp [leading to] cryptocurrency, but the demand is still there for money that is not affiliated with any particular government.

The PBOCs zeal for its own digital currency is so pronounced that a few companies have started to sell digital currency in the name of the bank, leading the central bank to issue a statement alerting the public to misleading claims. The yuan remains the only legitimate currency on the Chinese mainland.

Hong Kong Bitcoin exchange hacked, US$66m stolen: thieves may have exploited market closure during typhoon

The central banks fondness for going digital has raised scepticism in the bitcoin community. Susanne Tarkowski Tempelhof, founder of Bitnation, an advocacy group, said that if the central bank tried to invent a currency with embedded centralised control and inflation rather than deflation, then it would have a hard time competing with bitcoin and similar more well-designed currencies over time.

Previous attempts to create geography-centric crypto currencies such as Aurora Coin, MintChip and Scotcoin have so far been failures, Tempelhof said.

And the PBOC continued to face a challenge in producing an alternative to bitcoin, she added, which was decentralised, untrusting and resistant of traditional central banking.

T-R PHOTO BY ROSS THEDE Colfax-Mingos Mackensie Brown (12) slides safely into second base with a double ahead of the tag by Marshalltown shortstop Regan Mazour during Fridays game at the Bobcat Softball Classic at Marshalltown Community College. The Class 1A No. 11-ranked Tigerhawks topped the Bobcats 6-0.

If the Marshalltown softball team learned anything from its fleeting five-game win streak, head coach Jim Palmer hopes his squad discovered that the energy and enthusiasm they need to succeed must come from within.

MHS opened its annual Bobcat Softball Classic on Friday afternoon with a 6-3 victory over Des Moines Roosevelt, but ended with a 6-0 loss to Class 1A No. 11 Colfax-Mingo.

The Bobcats (7-20) scored three runs in their first at-bat of the tournament, going in front to stay against a fellow Central Iowa Metropolitan League program, but managed only three hits against the backup pitcher of a ranked 1A squad.

Marshalltowns success ebbed and flowed throughout the day, and Palmer hopes his squad can find a way to manufacture positive vibe even when things arent going the Bobcats way.

Youve got to bring that energy to every game, said Palmer. Theyve got to have their own drive and fire in their belly.

T-R PHOTO BY ROSS THEDE Marshalltowns Madi Finch lifts a single to left field during the Bobcats 6-0 loss to Class 1A No. 12 Colfax-Mingo on Friday evening.

Erica Johnson went 2-for-3 with a run and three RBIs, and McKaylee Dawson was 2-for-3 with two RBIs as Marshalltown took down Des Moines Roosevelt in the days opener. Dawson dealt a five-hitter from the circle as well, limiting the Roughriders (13-18) to five singles in a complete-game performance. She struck out three and did not walk a batter, and only one run was earned to the junior left-hander.

We played really good defense and McKaylee Dawson pitched a really good game, said Palmer. Roosevelt made a comeback toward the end, but by then we were just trying to trade outs for runs after we got up 6-1.

Dawsons two-run single capped Marshalltowns three-run eruption in the bottom of the first inning, and a throwing error led to two more Bobcat runs in the second.

Marshalltown went up 6-1 when Johnson drove in McKenna Major with a single in the fourth, before Roosevelt tallied single runs in the fifth and the seventh.

Well take a win any way we can right now for this team, Palmer said.

T-R PHOTO BY ROSS THEDE

Colfax-Mingo stung Dawson for 11 hits in 5 1/3 innings, chasing her from the circle when Amy Russell ripped her seventh home run of the season a two-run shot to make it 6-0 in the top of the sixth.

Marshalltown simply couldnt match the Tigerhawks offensively, finishing with three singles against C-M sophomore Colbee Cunningham. The right-hander generated a lot of weak contact from the Bobcat bats as she struck out only one and walked two, and her defense committed just one inconsequential error.

We just didnt hit, said Palmer. Their pitcher wasnt overpowering by any means, but they did a good job of keeping us off-balance.

The Bobcats made three errors, but only one run came unearned to Dawson.

Regan Mazour, Madi Finch and Major had Marshalltowns three singles. Major and Mazour reached on back-to-back infield hits with two outs in the fifth, but Colfax-Mingo escaped unscathed.

Tigerhawk leadoff hitter Ries Wilson finished 3-for-4 at the plate with a double and two runs scored.

In todays Bobcat Classic, Marshalltown meets up with Marion at 11:45 a.m. and BCLUW at 1:30 p.m. The Bobcats lost 4-3 to BCLUW during the Comets home tournament two weeks ago.

Comets beat Lisbon, get roughed up by Roosevelt

The Class 2A No. 13 BCLUW softball team edged 12th-ranked Lisbon, 3-2 in eight innings, before getting 10-runned by Des Moines Roosevelt during Fridays Bobcat Softball Classic.

The Comets (20-8) used their small-ball specialty to scratch out the game-winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning against Lisbon thanks to the international tiebreaker rule. Pinch-runner Kiersten Kruse moved to third on Easton Swansons sacrifice bunt and scored the winning run without a play after Sara Sharps well-placed bunt.

Samantha Ubben struck out eight, walked three, and scattered five hits and two unearned runs for the win in the circle.

BCLUW scored single runs in the first, sixth and eighth innings, while the Lions tallied a run in both the fifth and sixth but couldnt capitalize on the free baserunner in the top of the eighth.

Ubben led the Comets with three of their eight hits, and Sharp had two singles. Jenna Willett, Jordyn Beeghly and Swanson each had a hit.

Des Moines Roosevelt racked up 13 hits against BCLUW hurler Lauren Anderson and the Roughriders ran away with an 11-1, five-inning victory.

Leah Yantis went 2-for-3 at the top of the batting order for BCLUW. Beeghly doubled and scored the Comets only run on a groundout by Sharp. Ubben and Willett added singles in the lopsided loss.

BCLUW opens today with a 10 a.m. game against Bondurant-Farrar (7-19) and faces host Marshalltown (7-20) at 1:30 p.m.

T-R PHOTO BY ROSS THEDE BCLUW second baseman Samantha Ubben, left, readies her throw to first base for the double play after recording the force-out of Marshalltowns Erica Johnson (1) during the fourth inning of Saturdays game in the Bobcat Softball Classic.

As Emily Hass crossed home plate as the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning, Marshalltown head softball coach Jim Palmer kept waving as McKenna Major rounded third base inconsequentially.

Majors run would not have counted, but the Bobcats head coach is trying to use every chance he has to translate game situations into opportunities to improve.

Marshalltown made the most out of its last chance against Marion, upending the Indians 10-9, but couldnt gain an edge against Class 2A No. 13 BCLUW as the Comets captured an 8-1 victory Saturday over the hosts of the annual Bobcat Softball Classic.

MHS (8-21) finished the weekend 2-2 with splits on both days of the event, highlighted by the walk-off win against Marion. The Indians (9-21) scored twice in the top of the sixth inning and got another run in the seventh to overtake the Bobcats, 9-8, but Marshalltown got off to a fast start in its last chance.

Bridget Carroll came through with a leadoff single through the left side, and Emily Hass followed in kind. Marshalltown eighth-grader Kyra Feldman dropped down a sacrifice bunt to advance both runners, and McKenna Majors grounder to the left side allowed Carroll to slide home safely ahead of a close play at the plate.

T-R PHOTO BY ROSS THEDE Marshalltowns Regan Mazour, left, slides safely across home plate as BCLUW catcher Kate Goecke looks across the infield during the sixth inning of Saturdays game at the Bobcat Softball Classic. The Class 2A No. 13 Comets beat the Bobcats 8-1.

With two runners still in scoring position, Bobcat leadoff batter Regan Mazour slapped a grounder to the left side, and Marions shortstop threw wild to first base instead of attempting to prevent Hass from scoring the game-winning run.

As the throw skipped away across the diamond, Palmer implored Major to keep digging for home plate as if the season was on the line. It wasnt, but it will be one day down the line.

We wanted that game, that was one we knew we could get if we played well, said Palmer of the Marion matchup. I like those kinds of games for us. We need one with that pressure so we know we can play in close games and play from behind.

Marshalltown amassed 11 hits against Marion hurler Megan Kessens, who allowed six earned runs on one walk, one hit batsman while striking out seven. The Bobcats needed all the offense to keep pace with Marion slugger Sydney Nielsen, who hit a two-run home run in the top of the first and a solo shot in the seventh that put the Indians in front late, 9-8.

MHs doubled up on Nielsens first blast, scoring four times in the bottom of the first to take the lead. Madi Finch singled, Erica Johnson doubled, Ciara Feldman walked and Finch scored on a passed ball. McKaylee Dawsons bunt single drove in Johnson, and Bridget Carrolls bunt scored another. The Bobcats made it 4-2 when Dawson scored on a throw down to second base intended to stop Carroll from stealing.

T-R PHOTO BY ROSS THEDE Marshalltowns Bridget Carroll runs toward first base as her run-scoring sacrifice bunt is fielded by Marion pitcher Megan Kessens during the first inning of Saturdays game. Carroll reached safely on a throwing error that allowed another Bobcat to score in their eventual 10-9 victory.

But for every Marshalltown hit or run, Marion matched it. The Indians scored one in the second, as did the Bobcats, and then tallied three runs in the third. Marshalltown regained an 8-6 lead with three runs in the fourth, sparked by singles from Major and Mazour. Finchs sacrifice bunt was misplayed, allowing Major to score, and Mazour crossed home on Johnsons sacrifice fly. An errant throw by Marions outfield found the dugout, allowing Finch to score and made it a three-run game, 8-6.

The Indians scrambled up two runs in the sixth to tie, 8-all, before Nielsen gave her team a 9-8 lead with her sixth home run of the season. MHS sophomore pitcher Abby Brennecke surrendered back-to-back hits to follow, but the Bobcat defense got out of the jam with no further damage done before rallying for the win in the bottom of the seventh.

Brennecke finished with four strikeouts and two hit batsmen in the win, allowing 11 hits and seven earned runs. Johnson went 2-for-3 at the plate with a double, a run and an RBI, while Finch was 2-for-3 with an RBI and three runs scored. Dawson added two singles.

The Bobcats turned around to take on Class 2A No. 13 BCLUW in a rematch of their meeting during the Black Dirt Days tournament two weeks ago in Conrad, but the Comets separated themselves in convincing fashion. After edging the Bobcats 4-3 in their first showdown, the Comets pounced on early scoring chances and cruised to victory.

BCLUW junior pitcher Lauren Anderson allowed one hit over five innings for the win on her 17th birthday and the Comets made no errors behind her in an 8-1 win.

T-R PHOTO BY ROSS THEDE

Anderson did not allow a hit until Johnsons leadoff single in the fourth, but that Bobcat baserunner was erased moments later on a slick 6-4-3 double play. She ended with five strikeouts, two walks and one hit batter, and Samantha Ubben surrendered Marshalltowns only run before nailing down the Comets third win of the weened.

BCLUW reached Dawson and eighth-grader Kailee Pollard for a total of 14 hits and eight earned runs. Marshalltown also made no errors, unless you count pitching to Jordyn Beeghly. The Comets senior first baseman finished 3-for-4 at the plate with RBI singles in each of her first three plate-appearances.

BCLUW set the table for Beeghly with its trademark small-ball style of play, utilizing bunts and aggressive baserunning to driving opposing defenses to the limit. Marshalltown stood its own, but the Comets simply performed when the moments arrived.

I thought for our entire game we were sharp at everything we did, said Comet head coach David Lee. We played well in the Lisbon game [on Friday] and today we executed everything we needed to. It makes things a lot easier when you put the ball in play.

BCLUW, which bested Bondurant-Farrar 8-0 in Saturdays opening round, led 7-0 before Johnson broke up Andersons no-hitter with a leadoff single in the bottom of the fourth.

T-R PHOTO BY ROSS THEDE

Johnson finished with two of Marshalltowns three hits, including an RBI single against Ubben that plated the Bobcats lone run. Mazour welcomed Ubben into the circle with a single up the middle and Finch was hit by a pitch before Johnson came through with her second hit of the game.

Ubben settled down to strike out five of the next seven batters she faced to seal the Comets victory.

That first game [against Marion] we battled hard and we expended some energy, said Palmer, who was missing starting senior third baseman Aspen Chadderdon from his lineup on Satuday. So then we ran into coach Lee and we had some players out of position, and when that happens youre going to run into trouble. But were still a work in progress and we know that.

BCLUW acknowleges the work ahead of it, too, but it looked like a well-oiled machine most of the time on Saturday.

We were a little more fine-tuned today with the stuff we do offensively and defensively, said Lee. Today we didnt give anybody anything. We played pretty well.

Beeghly and Jenna Willett had three hits apiece, with Willett scoring twice, while Leah Yantis had a pair of RBI singles. Olivia Hughes had two infield hits while Swanson, Anderson doubled, and Sharp and Kate Goecke each had a single.

Dawson was tagged for seven earned runs on 10 hits over four innings, walking two while striking out one. Pollard allowed one run on four hits and a walk in two innings of relief pitching for the Bobcats, who play their final eight regular-season games against ranked 5A teams starting with a road trip to No. 6 Urbandale on Monday.

To me, that kind of competition helps us get better for regionals, said Palmer.

BCLUWs bid for the NICL West Division title comes down to two games this week. The Comets go to Gladbrook-Reinbeck on Monday before squaring off with 3A No. 9 West Marshall on Wednesday night in State Center in a game that will likely decide the conference championship.

Trojans roll to 2-0

West Marshall, like BCLUW, took a pair of wins away from Saturdays stay at the Bobcat Softball Classic. The Trojans (25-3) slipped past Des Moines Roosevelt, 3-1, before beating Bondurant-Farrar, 9-1.

The Trojans tallied single runs in the first, third and fifth innings to take down Roosevelt in Saturdays second round of games. Kallie Malloy twirled a three-hitter from the circle, striking out five and walking none, and the Roughriders lone run was unearned to the senior pitcher.

Renae Schaper went 3-for-3 at the plate with an RBI to lead West Marshall offensively. Brooke Snider singled and scored a run, and Kayla Cripps was 1-for-3 with two RBIs. Emma Meyer and Malloy both chipped in with singles, and Georgia Porter walked twice and scored a run. Schapers pinch-runner Catherine Sjoblom scored once as well.

Malloy again tossed a three-hitter, this time over 5 2/3 innings, as the Trojans finished off Bondurant-Farrar in six frames, 9-1. Payton Halverson pitched for the final out.

Karisa Blocker and Snider both went 2-for-4 with a double, an RBI and a run scored for West Marshall. Katie Price was 1-for-3 with an RBI, a stolen base and two runs scored, while Grace Porter was 1-for-1, walked twice and scored once. Pinch-runner Grace deNeui scored once in Porters place as well.

Malloy and Cripps also contributed singles for the Trojans, who host East Marshall on Monday night before playing a non-conference game Tuesday at South Hamilton. West Marshall entertains BCLUW on Wednesday in an NICL West Division clash of the conferences current co-leaders.

Workington Comets fall under Ipswich’s spell – Times & Star

Comets suffered their heaviest defeat since the sport returned to Workington on the road at Foxhall last season and it was another night to forget in Suffolk yesterday.

If Craig Cook was in the clouds after Mondays British title win, he was brought firmly back to Earth when he wound up last from the gate and could only pass his team-mate Mason Campton as the Witches started with a 5-1 through Danny King and Kyle Newman.

It got worse for Comets when James Sarjeant started with a 15-metre handicap for touching the tapes and was excluded from the re-run when he jumped again, leaving the hosts duo to romp to a second 5-1 ahead of Rob Shuttleworth.

Only a late pass from Ty Proctor to split Cameron Heeps and Justin Sedgmen stopped another 5-1 in heat three, before Rory Schlein won ahead of Thomas Jorgensen and Nathan Greaves to put Ipswich 12 points up and leave Comets in a desperate situation.

The captain stepped up to try to drag Comets back into the meeting on a tactical ride but, when bike problems caused him to miss the two minutes, he was forced to start from the back and could only climb to second to share the points.

Another home 5-1 followed as King raced away from Sarjeant and Newman and the latter passed his man on the third lap.

It was Camptons turn to start from 15 metres as he broke the tapes in heat eight and he finished at the back as Newman and Greaves nabbed a fourth Ipswich 5-1.

Yet another tapes offence saw Jorgensen handicapped from the gate in heat nine and Sarjeant could only split Sedgmen and Heeps on his old track to limit the Witches to a 4-2.

Newman and King combined for another 5-1 in heat 10 before an extended interval as paramedics checked over Jorgensen, who was withdrawn from the meeting.

Cook and Campton gave any Comets fans still paying attention something to enjoy at least with a 5-1 in heat 11 and a Comets 4-2 followed in heat 12.

But the damage had long since been done and, although King destroyed the tapes in heat 13, Schlein beat Cook and Sarjeant for a 3-3 before the hosts wrapped up the meeting with a 4-2 and another 5-1 to leave Comets with plenty of food for thought.

Local Clinical research could give more options for patients suffering from psoriasis – WTSP 10 News

Local research study could help psoriasis patients

Shannon Valladolid, WTSP 11:32 PM. EDT June 25, 2017

Imagine living with a skin condition that leaves severe rashes all over your body.

We're talking about Psoriasis.

For years, people suffering from the condition had only one option to get rid of it, painful weekly injections.

For the past 8 years, Olga Clark has given herself two injections every week to treat her Psoriasis.

I couldn't take a bath because the water burned my skin. My scalp was really severe to where I would scratch and I felt like I was bleeding, says Clark.

She no longer has rashes on her skin, now but Olgas says at its peak, psoriasis took over her body.

There was not a spot on me that was clear. my legs were covered, everything was covered, says Clark.

In 2014, the first pill finally hit the market called Otezla.

In an effort to challenge the only that pill, Dr.Seth Forman, who is the Principal Investigator with Forward Clinical Trials, is conducting a local research study to put a new pill in the hands of patients like Olga.

Olga is one of hundreds of patients that I have on these injectable medications. I can tell you most, if not all would rather take a pill like they do for their cholesterol or their blood pressure, says Dr.Forman, MD.

Dr. Forman says the downside to only having one pill option is some patients could have an allergic reaction, then it's back to injections. That's why he says clinical research is so important.

In order for us to get there for other skin conditions like Psoriasis, eczema. The only way we can do that is by having these what I call heroes participate in clinical research, he says.

Giving people living with severe skin conditions, an option to possibly not feel the pain of a needle.

If it didn't have to take a shot I would be happy. For them just to get on a pill, I think that's going to be great for them, says Clark.

Otezla has mixed reviews. Some complain they have severe side effects. But others say its really helped them deal with their condition.

Forward Clinical Trials is also working on research studies for treating the following:

Why Kazakh capital Astana could become the world’s next hot travel destination – The Independent

It is not too far away from Europe, it has a futuristic skyline and a rich history and it could becomeone the worlds hottest travel destinations.

The city of Astanamay be difficult to place on a map, but the capital of Kazakhstan is already becoming a hype destination in travelling circles.

The former Soviet city, which has undergone a huge makeover,is launching itself as a new Singapore at the heart of central Asia.

Architect Norman Foster, whose London-based company is known for its high-tech architecture, has worked to design the citys Khan Shatyr Entertainment Centre, anaward-winning tented-shaped steel structure, which echoes Kazakh history.

The citys blend of old and new architecture will no doubt be an attraction to the hundreds of thousands of visitors expected to attend the 2017 Expo.

The world fair, which in the past gave London its Crystal Palace and Paris its Eiffel Tower, is designed to showcase each countrys strengths and vision for the future with this years theme being Future Energy.

Nur Alem, Kazakhstans national pavilion has been described as the largest spherical building in the world andpromotes wind energy. The pavillion has already attracted close to 100,000 visitors since the Expo, which brings together 115 countries, opened on 10 June. It will run until 10 September.

For the Kazakhstan Government, the Expo is the opportunity to put Astana on the map and continue to attract tourists from around the world.

A general view shows Nur-Astana mosque in Astana (KIRILL KUDRYAVTSEV/AFP/Getty Images)

But there areplenty of other things to see in Astana, which is seven hours from Heathrow.

In a travel review, written for The Independent in 2010, Astana is described as rising up of nowhere.

You fly for an hour over a flat dry emptiness and then, suddenly, without any hint of outlying farms or suburbs, there it is: the Presidential Palace, a blue-domed version of America's White House, and behind it the Pyramid of Peace (likened by some New Age bloggers to a device for communicating with aliens), and the Bayterek, a bird's nest viewing platform 318ft high, it reads.

Surrounding by steppe, looking beyond Astana is like looking straight to the edge of the world, the author wrote.

Astana is also anopen door onto the rest of Kazakhstan, the worlds largest landlocked country. Between Europe and Asia, the Kazakhstanhas a complicated and rich history, a unique and authentic culture and landscapeswhere east and west meet.

The Kazakh tourism boardboasts about the diversity of the countrys tourism industry, which rangefrom cultural excursions to skiing and trekking in the mountains, and water sports innearby lakes and rivers.

HHS Secretary Defies Trump on Ebola Travel Ban – The Atlantic

At the height of the Ebola outbreak in 2014, days before the World Health Organization declared it an international public health emergency, Donald Trump tweeted: The U.S. cannot allow EBOLA infected people back. People that go to far away places to help out are great-but must suffer the consequences!

This framework sees infected persons as an enemy to be contained and avoided rather than as people who need treatment, the global health researcher Jeremy Youde wrote in response.

That is a worrying framework, especially considering that Trump will almost certainly face another epidemic during his presidency. If not Ebola, if not Zika, then something else. As my colleague Ed Yong wrote in his examination of how a pandemic might play out under the Trump administration: Outbreaks of disease are among the ultimate tests for any leader who wants to play on the global stage. They demand diplomacy, decisiveness, leadership, humility, and expertiseand they quickly unearth any lack of the same.

On Sunday at the Aspen Ideas Festival, which is co-hosted by the Aspen Institute and The Atlantic, Atlantic editor-in-chief Jeffrey Goldberg read Trumps Ebola tweet to Tom Price, the Secretary of Health and Human Services. In the case of another Ebola outbreak, Goldberg asked, would Price recommend to the president that the U.S. allow infected health workers back into the country?

Price definitively diverged from Trump on this. Its not only our responsibility, to let them back, he said, its a moral action that must be taken.

Price spoke of his recent trip to Liberia, an epicenter of the 2014 outbreak. That was a devastating crisis, but it would not have ended the way it didin a positive waywithout the United States involvement. Thats a community thats thrilled that the U.S. engaged.

Prices praise of President Barack Obamas response to Ebola also differs from the position Trump took at the time of the outbreak. In another tweet, Trump called Obamas decision to send the military to West Africa dumb.

The United States has an incredibly important role to play in terms of world health, Price said. I believe we are the leader.

But Trumps proposed budget includes a $1.2 billion cut to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the agency that is at the forefront of U.S. leadership on international outbreak responses. The former CDC director Tom Frieden has called this cut unsafe at any level of enactment.

When Goldberg asked Price how to reconcile these cuts with his insistence on the importance of American global health leadership, Price said: The premise to that question is that the CDC budget right now is exactly where it needs to be and there are no efficiencies to be gained. I would suggest to you that there are efficiencies that can be had.

And as far as President Trumps preparedness to handle whatever outbreak will inevitably emerge while he sits in the White House, Price expressed confidence. Ive been incredibly impressed with his inquisitiveness, he said. Hes got a great intellect. Hes engaging on the issues, and has a warmth about him, from a heart standpoint, for the nation that is impressive. When we have these conversations on the difficult challenges that exist, he fully understands and appreciates that the role of the United States is imperative in the world.

Bastille Day celebrations around the world – NRToday.com

Theres more than one red, white and blue celebration to tempt travelers in July.

Ten days after the United States marks Independence Day, France waves its tricolor flag to celebrate Bastille Day. The holiday commemorates a turning point in the French Revolution that took place on July 14, 1789, the storming of the Paris prison that represented the authority of the monarchy.

The largest celebration takes place in Paris, highlighted by a military parade and aerial show along the citys grand boulevard, the Champs-Elysees.

Art lovers can take advantage of free admission to the Louvre on Bastille Day to see priceless works like the Mona Lisa.

In the evening, the city stages a concert at the base of the Eiffel Tower. This symbol of France serves as a backdrop for a dazzling fireworks display. But thats not the end of the festivities.

Fire stations across Paris traditionally host parties on the evenings of July 13-14 that stretch into the next day.

If you cant get to France, there are plenty of places in the U.S. to celebrate Bastille Day and get your fill of French culture.

In New York City, French Restaurant Week takes place July 3-16, with establishments offering special fixed-price menus. The French Institute/Alliance Francaise holds its annual Bastille Day block party on East 60th Street from noon to 5 p.m. July 9, featuring food, entertainment, a marketplace and childrens activities.

And on July 13, New Yorks Committee of French-Speaking Societies puts on a Bastille Day Ball. On Bastille Day itself, head over to the Museum of Modern Art or the Metropolitan Museum of Art, both of which have superb collections of French impressionist paintings.

New Orleans was founded in the 18th century as a colony of France, and its undoubtedly the most French city in the U.S. Bastille Day is celebrated throughout the city, but the main event takes place on July 14 at the New Orleans Museum of Art. The museums Bastille Day Fte includes arts and crafts, costume contests, childrens activities, music and dancing and French food. And of course no visit to New Orleans is complete without spending time strolling the French Quarter. The citys oldest neighborhood is filled with shops, bars, restaurants, cafes and historic buildings.

Bastille Day activities pop up in some less-expected places, too.

Milwaukee, Wisconsin hosts one of the nations largest celebrations, this year taking place July 13-16 in downtowns Cathedral Square Park. Activities include a Storm the Bastille 5K run/walk, an international marketplace, French and Cajun cuisine, chef and wine demonstrations, street performers, a Mardi Gras-style parade and an hourly light show from a 43-foot replica of the Eiffel Tower.

Philadelphia holds a Bastille Day party July 15 at the Eastern State Penitentiary, a former prison thats now a museum. Activities include a French carnival, complete with a Tastykake-eating contest. There will also be tours of the prison and a reenactment of the storming of the Bastille.

Breakthrough Stem Cell Treatments, Stem Cell Therapy, & Stem …

Treatment

The Stem Cell treatment performed at our clinics is a painless medical procedure where Stem Cells (cellular building blocks) are usually administered intravenously and subcutaneously (under the skin). The whole procedure takes approximately one hour and has no known negative side effects.

Following the treatment, the Fetal Stem Cells will travel throughout the body, detecting damaged cells and tissue and attempts to restore them. The Fetal Stem Cells can also stimulate existing normal cells and tissues to operate at a higher level of function, boosting the bodys own repair mechanisms to aid in the healing process. These highly adaptive cells then remain in the body, continually locating and repairing any damage they encounter.

As with any medical treatment, safety should be of the highest priority. The Stem Cells used in our treatment undergo extensive screening for possible infection and impurities.

Utilizing tests more sophisticated than those regularly used in the United States for Stem Cell research and transplant. Our testing process ensures we use only the healthiest cells to enable the safest and most effective Fetal Stem Cell treatment possible. And, unlike other types of Stem Cells, there is no danger of the bodys rejection of Fetal Stem Cells due to the fact they are immune privileged. This means that you can give the cells to any patient without matching, use of immunosuppressive drugs and without rejection. This unique quality eliminates the need for drugs used to suppress the immune system, which can leave a patient exposed to serious infections.

With over 3000 patients treated, Stem Cell Of America has achieved positive results with a wide variety of illnesses, conditions and injuries. Often, in cases where the diseases continued to worsen, our patients have reported substantial improvements following the Stem Cell treatment.

Patients have experienced favorable developments such as reduction or elimination of pain, increased strength and mobility, improved cognitive function, higher tolerance for chemotherapy, and quicker healing and recovery.

To view follow up letters from patients, please visit the patient experiences page on our website.

5 signs you are out of touch with your spirituality – Connectstatesboro

You could be in a crowded room filled with family and friends, and yet you feel lonely and disconnected. You pull away from the people who care about you and from the things that bring you joy. And you struggle against those negative feelings. But unfortunately, ignoring this can affect your well-being, your relationships and how you function.

There was a period during my early adulthood when I isolated myself. I was physically present, but not mentally or emotionally. I wanted to be alone. My thoughts were built on frustration and grudges. I didnt see the bright side of things. I refused to listen to family when they said God would take care of things. How was that possible? I prayed to Him, but I didnt see change. I was upset with God.

It took a lot of family support and the drive to want help before I understood God wasnt ignoring me. He was listening, but He was waiting for me to draw closer to Him. He needed me to embrace my spirituality. When I finally did, I was able to let go of what weighed me down. I gained back control of my life and strengthened my emotional and mental stability. Once I accepted God, I never looked back.

Below are five signs you are not in touch with your spirituality:

1. You don't have trust in prayer

Maybe you say you believe and have faith. When life is not going as planned, you may even pray for positive change and enlightenment. But when time passes with no change, you begin to lose hope. You doubt God is listening. The truth is He is listening to every word in our minds and hearts. Gods timing and plans are usually different from ours. But He will answer and give us what we need at the right time. Praying to God is believing without seeing that is faith.

2. You refuse to forgive

Its hard to forgive at least right away. Many believe its better to stay angry at someone or at life. But its not. Not forgiving creates bitterness, destroys our inner peace and pulls us farther away from God. People will hurt us and we will suffer rough patches. But part of our spirituality is knowing God will carry us through. We are never alone. God is with us through good and bad.

3. You're judgmental

Judging people negatively is used to take attention from ourselves. It is a way to make ourselves feel better if weve done something wrong. Unfortunately, pinpointing someone elses faults is not Gods way. He doesnt want us to judge one another. He wants us to love each other as He loves us.

4.You never assume responsibility

Blaming others for our mistakes will make life more empty. God created us to support one another, not destroy one another. We all have imperfections; so when we make a mistake, admit it, ask for forgiveness and be better moving forward.

5.You lack spiritual understanding

Its difficult to understand the meaning of spirituality and what it entails. Its more than just prayer. Its believing in God without always seeing, accepting others for who they truly are, genuinely wanting the best for others, and so much more. Our spiritual journey should include building a relationship with God so we can understand more fully that and how He loves and guides us.

Getting in touch with our spirituality is vital for our soul. It helps us gain and keep a healthier outlook on life. The process doesnt happen overnight; its gradual. But there is so much satisfaction once we embrace it. Theres no better feeling than that of knowing we have a relationship with a father in heaven who loves us.

‘Cainitic spirituality’ – Daily Sentinel

Many Christians today, it seems to me, live a life of wandering. They wander from teaching to teaching, apt to drift to what sounds most like what they want to hear about God, the world, and themselves. But they also wander from experience to experience, seeking something that will satisfy them on the one hand without requiring full surrender on the other.

Christianity that is characterized by shallow and self-absorbed worship and teaching is reminiscent of the spirituality of Cain in Genesis chapter 4. Cain was a religious man. He worshiped, he tithed, he had what could be called a relationship with God. In terms of practice, he is probably as good an example in ancient times to a typical Christian in our Post-Modern one.

Of course, Cains practice was the outflow of his hearts attitude. His practice can hardly be said to be more than mediocre and was therefore unfulfilling to himself and unremarkable to its intended recipient, God. It had more to do with ritual (religious habit devoid of passion) than it did with genuine worship. It had more to do with the appeasement of God (the minimum necessary to get God off his back) than it did with atonement (the bridging of the distance that his sinful nature created with God). His worship had only to do with obliging God (fulfilling his obligation) and nothing whatsoever with pleasing His Creator.

This lackluster faade of false spirituality pales in comparison to a life authentically given over to its Maker, that of Abel, Cains little brother. Abel, seems to really get it, in contrast to Cain, who quite clearly doesnt get it. Abels life resonates with worship that is a melody of genuine devotion and delight in God. His hearts desire is for more than a touch of God but of close and sustained communion with Him. This attitude of worship outshines Cains offering as brightly as does the sun outdo the faint glow of an open cell phone. Abel does not want to just fulfill his obligation, he craves to surpass it and please God with his focused and lavish worship.

When God looked on Abels offering, the genuine nature of it was clear because Abel gave his best and first dibs to God (see Genesis 4:4). Cain presumably surmised that God was not taking Cains offering at face value but was judging it based on what Abel was giving (as if God preferred sirloin steak to garden salad with scallions and bacon bits or vise-versa). Its that age-old habit of ours to assume that estimations of our worth are derived from comparisons with others. But it doesnt work that way. Our value is not relative to others; it is absolute and the Lords estimation of our worth is independent of how others are behaving, what they can do, or what they may be giving. The fact is that the what is less important to God than the how. God would not overlook the fact that Cains worship was lukewarm at best nor does He do so now.

Some might give this passage in Genesis a shallow reading. To them it might suggest that God favors sheep ranchers to dirt farmers, but that would be as silly as saying that the Lord likes plumbers over restaurant managers (or restaurant managers over plumbers), doctors over information technologists (or the reverse), and so on. But take it from a former career counselor, Cains vocation was not the problem. His problem was his hearts attitude.

No doubt you have heard the story of Cain and Able. Cain became jealous of Abels favor with God. Basically, Abel was getting something out of his religion that Cain was not. Cain started jealous and then became suspicious, imagining in his heart that Abels wonderful spiritual life was all pretense and pride. Maybe, in a typically human way of underestimating God, he even wondered if Abel was doing something down and dirty behind Cains back to get God to like him. Who knows? What we do know is that, as his bitterness festered and grew in his heart, he moved from being suspicious to injurious, exploding in an eruption of violence that left Abel dead. I doubt, by the way, that it was a murder of passion. My inclination is that it was calculated although stupid as if God wouldnt notice or hadnt seen what had happened. Cain did not comprehend the ever-present and all-knowing nature of God. But God saw. He knew. Just as He sees and knows today what is going on in our hearts and minds.

Cainitic spirituality abounds today but it still has a knack for being shortsighted. Not only that, it leaves us thoroughly unsatisfied. Sadly, instead of submitting to the grace that God gives us through His Word in challenging our attitudes as His Spirit strives to help us see the roadblocks that lie within us (e.g., anger, see verses 6-10), we imagine that the fault lies with the one who is spiritually alive and passionate: he evidently has some sort of satisfaction that we crave for ourselves, a rich and passionate experience with God, so we become seeded with jealousy. Just as in Cains case, it produces in time a crop of injury against our brothers through unjust criticisms, disassociations, or violence.

This is not to say that we do not engage error or attitude that grieves Gods Spirit or that leads the unsuspecting from the true Gospel of Jesus Christ. On the contrary!

But churches often have a way trying to snuff out the Abels among them, because their desire for more of God and their generous spirit towards the Lord makes others feel uncomfortable with their own ho-hum religious life. Folks often despise being reminded that there may be something missing that they really do want, but to possess must be willing to give up everything.

In the end, of course, God deals with Cains murder of his brother by sending him away. Cain ventures out east of the garden of Eden to the land of Nod (Nod means wandering).

In a way, Christians today are dwelling in their own Land of Nod. In ancient times, Cain and his descendants built a great civilization. It grew and spread and seemed to be flourishing. But it at last came to nothing when the destruction of the great Flood swept over the earth after a lengthy process of increasing immorality, anarchy, and futility.

But another son was born to Adam and Eve, trumping the evil that Cain intended when he killed Abel. Through Seth the Abelitic spirit of worship was preserved even through the cataclysm of the Great Flood of Noahs day. It was the descendants of Seth who shone in a spiritually dark society (the civilization of Cains lineage) by calling on the name of the Lord (see verse 26), proclaiming Him even though those around them had descended into wickedness and perversion.

What kind of Christian do you want to be? A Cainitic Christian or an Abelitic Christian? One who is lukewarm and does only what is minimally necessary or one who lavishes upon God the best he has to offer? One who contents himself with the meager fruit of a nominal Christian life or one who hungers for more of God in this life?

In a world full of Cains, God is looking for more Abels. It is time to leave the Land of Nod and embark upon the greatest adventure of all. Open your heart to God, give Him your life, and let Him make Himself known to you as you follow His Son in Spirit and in truth (see John 4:23-24).

Asbury United Methodist brings spirituality to the streets in annual block party – Frederick News Post (subscription)

God is in the neighborhood.

This was the message written across the navy blue t-shirts of worshippers at Asbury United Methodist Church who, on Saturday, brought God into the streets of their neighborhood for the fifth annual Asbury United Methodist Block Party.

Tented booths lined the streets, some offering face painting and temporary tattoos while others were stacked with brochures and information from social service agencies and community groups. Music sounded down the block, inspiring impromptu dancing among some of the throngs of participants. Others slurped snow cones or chowed down on the free hot dogs offered from a truck stationed in the Mountain City Elks Lodge parking lot.

Kay Gant gratefully accepted a purple snow cone delivered to her seat at one of the booths.

When its hot like this, theres nothing better, she said.

As she surveyed the scene of activities before her, Gant recalled similar gatherings held during her childhood years. Gant, now 70, grew up on West All Saints Street, and has attended Asbury United Methodist for so long I cant remember.

It used to be, everybody and anybody who lived on this street went to either the baptist church or to Asbury, she said. It was a whole community, this block.

Decades later, many of the neighbors she grew up with have died, or moved away. What was once exclusively an African-American neighborhood, the result of segregation, now has more white people than black, Gant said.

To Reginald Davis, another longtime local resident and Asbury parishioner, the change brought about by time and new residents wasnt necessarily better.

As far as Im concerned, I had more fun in the segregation days than I do now, Davis, 89, said. We were closer then, everybody sitting out and talking together, having fun, sharing food. Everybodys more scattered now.

Gant also acknowledged how the strong black identity that once characterized the neighborhood has weakened. But she didnt think it had been lost altogether.

Those of us who are still around, we stay connected, she said.

Events like the block party helped to resurrect the longstanding traditions of years past, she added.

It preserves our history, she said. And it allows people to see that, at the end of the day, if you believe in God, things will work itself out.

The Rev. Mark Groover, pastor at Asbury, hadnt been around long enough to remember the so-called good old days. Groover became church pastor a year ago, and Saturday was his second year attending the block party, he said.

Even as a relative newcomer, Groover highlighted the churchs 200-year-history as the backbone of its mission and the inspiration for the block party event.

Were a church for the community, in the community, he said. We want to maintain that presence, let people know were here for them.

Sisters Jaiden, Zen and Jasmine Nuako were unfamiliar with both the church and the community before Saturday. The trio, from Bowie, were among the lineup of musical performances scheduled for the event.

Their group, Sonata, drew a captive audience to the parking lot as the threesome sang in harmony, a melody interspersed with rap and hip-hop dance moves.

We all have different styles, but we come together in harmony, which is what our name means, explained Jasmine, 14, the oldest of the three. We have different inspirations, different personalities.

Jasmine named The Walls Group, a contemporary gospel band, as her musical inspiration. Zen, the rapper and hip-hop artist, said she preferred singer-songwriter India Arie.

But both were looking forward to exploring the activities offered at the block party, snow cones included.

Silicon Valley Recap Season 4, Episode 10, Server Error – slantmagazine

Server Error, the season-four finale of Silicon Valley, checks in with almost all the main characters in Pied Piper's orbit while setting the stage for two season-five showdowns: the battle between Richard (Thomas Middleditch) and Gavin (Matt Ross) for domination of the Internet and the fight for Richard's soul. Richard lurches in the general direction of ends-justify-the-means mogul-dom with exquisite clumsiness, bouncing back and forth between maniacal determination and dejected self-loathing as his team keeps pulling him back from the brinkJared (Zach Woods) appealing to his morals while Dinesh (Kumail Nanjiani) and Gilfoyle (Martin Starr) ride herd on his ego. Meanwhile, Gavin roars back into top predator mode with sociopathic ease, polishing off the amuse-bouche of Jack Barker (Stephen Tobolowsky) in one ravenous bite before making a beeline for Richard.

Pied Piper scores another accidental victory near the end of Server Error when they learn that their code has been kept alive by a bunch of smart refrigerators, but the episode begins with the spectacular blow-up of their last brief triumph. In the opening scene, Dinesh watches a viral video of a Hooli phone exploding, overloaded by the combination of Jack and Keenan's hastily doctored demo and Pied Piper's illegally installed software. In Hooli-Con, that disaster seemed to be just the latest in a long string of defeats snatched from the jaws of victory, but it threatens to be a deeper existential threat to Pied Piper in Server Error when it causes Jared, Richard's right-hand man and unofficial conscience, to resign, horrified as much by Richard's refusal to show remorse as by the damage done to the phones.

In the corporate-giant version of Richard's refusal to accept responsibility, Jack pins all the blame for the exploding phones on Gavin and Keenan. He also vows to replace all nine million affected Hooli phones from the market and replace them within the next three days, a goal so impossible that even the Chinese factory workers who make the phones refuse to do it. Their revolt is a hugely satisfying revenge fantasy, given all the reports of near-slave-labor conditions in Apple and Microsoft factories in China, but in true Silicon Valley fashion, it's played as comedy as well as drama.

Silicon Valley constantly draws on and deepens our understanding of its characters.

Jack looks ridiculous as he tries to give the workers a pep talk; he and all the workers wear white body suits that leave only their faces exposed against an antiseptically white background, like the sperm in Woody Allen's Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Sex. And the smash cut from Jack saying the title of his would-be-inspirational speech to a TV newswoman announcing that he's been taken hostage by the workers accentuates the gulf between the workers' blunt pragmatism and Jack's smug faith in his own bullshit.

That's not the episode's only nod to cultural insensitivity in the tech world. When Jared interviews an Asian-American candidate to replace him at Pied Piper, he segues from approvingly noting that she's fluent in Japanese to asking if she can be comfortable with casual racism. And Bachman (T.J. Miller) and Gavin are the ultimate ugly Americans as they dabble with spiritual enlightenment in Tibet. When Gavin's lama warns that he has to choose between enlightenment and ignorance, he stops for just one brief comic beat before opting for the latter. So it's particularly ludicrousthough also, in a way, oddly appropriatewhen Bachman, the eternal drifter, ends his time on the series stoned into immobility in an opium den as Gavin hands the owner enough money to keep him high for five years.

Silicon Valley has always excelled in character-driven comedy: sight gags, running jokes, and other bits that spring from or build on something we know about a character. There's plenty of that in this episode, like the way the mysterious Jared subverts expectations once again when Richard visits his condo to apologize. No doubt Richard expects to find Jared alone, as the rest of the Pied Piper crew almost always are when they're not with each other, but instead he's met by the sound of merry female laughter.

Meanwhile, Richard's lone sexual encounter in months, like Dinesh's short-lived affair with Mia, goes disastrously wrong as only a socially awkward sexual neophyte's can, earning him a black eye and probably losing him his only client. His desperate, undignified scuffle of a fight scene with Dan (Jake Broder) is a tasty bit of physical comedy, with Dan throwing Richard off his chair and Jared swiftly swooping in to save his boss. The way Richard boasts about the whole thing later to Gavin is even funnier, thanks to the former's mangled syntax and excruciatingly awkward body language, but it's also touching because his pride is so palpable, and so misplaced.

Bits like these are one of the many ways Silicon Valley earns its fans' dedication. A lesser series might deaden our interest by constantly reinforcing just one or two defining traits for each character, or by bombarding us with canned jokes. Silicon Valley's humor is both physically and verbally agile, and it constantly draws on and deepens our understanding of its characters, the relationships between them, and the world in which they operate.

Somizi says he has HIV, cancer or diabetes | The Citizen – Citizen

In an interview with City Press published on Sunday, popular entertainer Somizi Mhlongo spoke about his upcoming memoir, Dominoes: Unbreakable Spirit.

He writes in the book that he was diagnosed with a terminal disease in 1999 that had the capacity to take his life within six months and is incurable. He says he wont name the illness for personal reasons.

Somizi apparently debated whether it was worth seeking treatment and living with the chronic illness. The 44-year-old maintains that hes never felt the need to tell people what his ailment actually is.

I havent had the courage or the need to say which one it is between cancer, HIV and diabetes.

He was apparently told he only had a month to live, but God had other plans for him more than six years ago.

Somizi explained that by cultivating a positive mind-set he was able to rise above his affliction despite numerous days when it all felt like too much.

He also reveals how difficult his life became afterhe was falselyaccused of sexually assaulting aman and needed to go on anti-depressants to deal with the stress. His cars were repossessed, his mortgage was in arrears and he was completely broke after jobs in the entertainment industry apparently dried up.

Today, the choreographer is an Idols judge, has his own reality show and numerous promotion and endorsement deals.

The only sustainable solution for his life, he says, had been to stop drinking and having casual sex and turning to prayer and spiritual enlightenment.

He also credits Rhema Bible Church and friends there for giving him peace.

Despite how surprising it may seem, Somizi maintains hes never taken drugs despite havingnotoriously drug-troubled friend Brenda Fassie (who died of an overdose) often offering him narcotics.

Mandoza and Bricks allegedly also did cocaine in his presence.
