Artificial intelligence is being used in a variety of ways in the healthcare industry, and one area where it is proving to be an effective asset is cybersecurity. Healthcare CIOs and CISOs should recognize that AI has the ability to enhance technologys ability to identify malicious activity and attackers and to protect systems and data, healthcare cybersecurity experts said. And AI does so in different ways.

Machine learning and artificial intelligence can be used to augment and/or replace traditional signature-based protections, said Robert LaMagna-Reiter, senior director of information security at First National Technology Solutions, a managed IT services company that, among other things, advises on cybersecurity issues. One area is security information and event management alerting, or anti-virus solutions.

With the immense amount of data, security personnel cannot efficiently sift through every event or alert, whether legitimate or a false-positive machine learning and AI solve this problem by looking at behavior versus signatures, as well as taking into account multiple data points from a network, LaMagna-Reiter explained.

By acting on behavior and expected actions versus outdated or unknown signatures, the systems can take immediate actions on threats instead of alerting after the fact, he added.

Artificial intelligence also can assist with self-healing or self-correcting actions, LaMagna-Reiter said.

For example, if an antivirus or next-generation firewall system incorporates AI or behavioral monitoring information, assets with abnormal behavior signs of infection, abnormal traffic, anomalies can automatically be placed in a quarantined group, removed from network access, he said. Additionally, AI can be used to take vulnerability scan results and exploit information to move assets to a safe-zone to prevent infection, or apply different security policies in an attempt to virtually patch devices before an official patch is released.

Further, if abnormal activity is observed, prior to any execution AI can wipe the activity and all preceding actions from a machine, LaMagna-Reiter explained. Essentially, every action is recorded and monitored for playback, if necessary, he said.

Cybersecurity is one of the most prominent use-cases for machine learning and artificial intelligence, said Viktor Kovrizhkin, a security expert at DataArt, which builds custom software for businesses.

The main niche for applying machine learning and complex AI systems in healthcare cybersecurity is reactive analysis and notification or escalation of potential problems, Kovrizhkin said. In combination with other infrastructure components, a machine learning-based approach may respond with actions to anticipate potential data leaks.

Making use of artificial intelligence is a progressive action, where a system constantly trains and identifies patterns of behavior and can discriminate between those considered normal and those that require attention or action, said Rafael Zubairov, a security expert at DataArt.

For this, the machine can use a variety of available data sources, such as network activity, errors or denial of access to data, log files, and many more, Zubairov said. Continuous interaction with a person and information gathering after deep analysis allow systems to self-improve and avoid future problems.

But successful use of artificial intelligence in healthcare requires a top-down approach that includes an executive in the know, LaMagna-Reiter said.

An organization must implement a defense-in-depth, multi-layer security program and have an executive-sponsored information security function in order to fully realize the benefits of implementing machine learning and AI, LaMagna-Reiter explained. Without those, machine learning and AI would be under-utilized tools that dont have the opportunity to take the security program to the next step. Machine learning and AI are not a silver bullet, or even a one-size-fits-all solution.

Instagram Starts Using Artificial Intelligence to Moderate Comments. Is Facebook Up Next? – Variety

Instagram started to automatically block offensive comments Thursday, using artificial intelligence to go beyond simple keyword filters. The use of this technology is also a test case for Facebook as it is looking to improve its own moderation and filtering.

The Facebook-owned photo sharing service officially announced the launch of a new comment filter Thursday morning. Many of you have told us that toxic comments discourage you from enjoying Instagram and expressing yourself freely, wrote Instagram CEO and co-founder Kevin Systrom in a blog post. To help, weve developed a filter that will block certain offensive comments on posts and in live video.

Instagram also announced a new spam filter, which it had quietly been testing over the last couple of months. Filtering abusive comments will for now only be available in English, but spam is being detected if its written inSpanish, Portuguese, Arabic, French, German, Russian, Japanese, or Chinese as well. Comment filters are enabled by default, but can be turned off by each user.

Both filters are powered by machine learning, which means that the technology used to filter comments has been trained with a test set of data, and is looking at not just keywords but also contexts and relationships. An f-word between friends may have a completely different meaning than a slur hurled at an outsider, and song lyrics can include a lot of offensive language without actually offending anyone.

Instagrams comment and spam filters are based on DeepText, an artificial intelligence effort developed in-house at Facebook, as Wired reported Thursday.

Thats notable in part because Facebook itself has yet to officially commit to AI as a means to moderate content and comments. Executives previously said that it may take some time before AI can play a role in moderation, and Facebook has responded to recent controversies related to inappropriate content with the hire of thousands of additional human moderators.

However, more recently, the company seems to have changed its tune on AI a bit. Theres an area of real debate about how much we want AI filtering posts on Facebook, wrote CEO Mark Zuckerberg in a blog post earlier this month. Its a debate we have all the time and wont be decided for years to come. But in the case of terrorism, I think theres a strong argument that AI can help keep our community safe and so we have a responsibility to pursue it.

Does this mean that Facebook may also eventually use AI to moderate comments the way Instagram is now? A Facebook spokesperson stressed that both platforms are unique in a statement emailed toVariety:

Facebook and Instagram are different platforms with different user experiences from the follow model to how comments are used. Although we share the same goal of creating safe communities, we are going to have different approaches. Instagrams new tools are a great first step that both companies will be able to learn from.

In other words: Facebook may not copy Instagrams new AI-powered comment filters 1:1, but the company surely is looking to this as a test case as it evaluates if and how it may one day use artificial intelligence for moderation on Facebook proper as well.

Machines capable of carrying out tasks normally reserved for humans will boost global GDP by as much as 14 percent by 2030, according to PwC.

In a report, the global auditing and consulting firm argued that the widespread adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) can contribute $15.7 million to the world economy over the next decade, the equivalent of the current combined output of China and India, as it would vastly increase productivity and spur shoppers to spend more. According to the firm's calculations, the bulk of these gains, $9.1 trillion, will be generated by consumption-side effects. Shoppers, driven to work by autonomous cars, are expected to use their extra time and resources to buy personalized and higher-quality goods. The U.S. is forecast to be a major beneficiary of this trend PwC reckons that consumption patterns triggered by AI will add $3.7 trillion to the North American economy. China is predicted to be an even bigger beneficiary, particularly as its heavily dependent on manufacturing, an industry that is expected to receive a huge economic boost from the introduction of automated robotic workforces.

The mindset today is man versus machine, Anand Rao, an AI researcher at PwC in Boston, said following the release of the report, according to Bloomberg. What we see as the future is man and machine together can be better than the human.

One of the biggest controversies surrounding AI, aside from fears that robots might one day malfunction and turn on humans, is the risks they pose to jobs. While automated manufacturing processes might save companies plenty over the long-run, it is also true that this process could come at the expense of employees, potentially leaving billions of people out of work.

Some 42 percent of the $15.7 trillion that PwC claims AI can pump into the global economy is expected to be generated by automated machinery in the workplace. If this phenomenon leads to mass job losses, as many predict, the reports argument of stronger consumption patterns suddenly appears less convincing. PwC thinks otherwise, arguing that new jobs will be created to coincide with the rising adoption of AI. The adoption of no-human-in-the-loop technologies will mean that some posts will inevitably become redundant, but others will be created by the shifts in productivity and consumer demand emanating from AI, and through the value chain of AI itself, said the report. In addition to new types of workers who will focus on thinking creatively about how AI can be developed and applied, a new set of personnel will be required to build, maintain, operate, and regulate these emerging technologies.

Its no surprise that I believe AI will have a profound impact to the world we live in in the next decade. As an early stage B2B investor, Ill examine how AI will impact the areas that I invest in heavily.

One analogy I like to use is to compare enterprise software to the evolution of autonomous vehicles. The AV world uses a level system that defines its state of autonomy (level 5 being completely autonomous). I believe enterprise software will follow a similar path.

Today, enterprise software is largely at the power steering phase, where workflow-based software helps you steer more easily. If youve ever driven an old car, its actually quite hard to steer without power steering, so the technology is valuable.

Over the next decade, I believe enterprise software will get to level 4/5, where software will be self driving, and well see a paradigm shift in the coming years when we move from a mindset of machines are assisting humans to humans are assisting machines.

Whats an example of level 4/5 autonomy for software? Lets take Salesforce for example. Salesforce has been a largely workflow driven solution to push sales reps to input their activities (so they get paid) and thus allow sales managers to view activities of their direct report and manage more efficiently.

What could a self-driving Salesforce look like? On the sales rep side, input of activity could happen automatically. The system may source and prioritize leads that have high likelihood of closing, automatically draft correspondence for these leads, and then reach out to them in the most appropriate channels (chat, email, etc). Then itll go back and forth with these leads to drive them down the funnel. A human may get involved when the machine is uncertain or when its time for the sales rep to take the potential customers out to dinner.

The fuel to climbing the self-driving ladder is high-quality, preferably proprietary data. What is proprietary data (to me)?

1) Data set is truly unique. I believe unique data sets are increasingly rare. Examples are population data (in healthcare) or time series data (i.e. data about a person over a long period of time).

2) Scale of data is proprietary. For example, LinkedIn has one of the largest resume books in the world. Is each profile individually unique? Not necessarily, but the scale is proprietary.

3) Weight of data network relationships is proprietary. Facebook has profiles, and each profile is interesting, but whats more interesting is the weight of relationships between each person.

One of the biggest problems facing startups is how to build a proprietary dataset, and how to acquire user on day one. A few tips to keep in mind:

1) Provide significant incremental value for the 1st customer. On day 1, I believe a startup needs to provide significant value without a massive investment from the customer. This is incredibly important and I believe is a huge barrier for companies I see today. The compelling business use case on day 1 is your ticket to entry!

2) Network effect: N+1 customer gets more benefit than customer N (because of data contribution). As you add more customers, your data set should become more robust, and thus you should be able to deliver a better solution for ALL customers.

3) Get your customers to serve as a mechanical turks. In a perfect world, a startup can provide a solution where their customers will serve as mechanical turks to increase the quality of the data set without costing them additional $.

I do want to re-iterate that I see startups focus too heavily on the end goal and dont account for the value proposition of their product today. We always have to remember that from day one, the customer is buying into what you immediately provide.

Artificial Intelligence Could Be Another Catalyst For Broadcom – Investor’s Business Daily

Artificial intelligence could be another business driver for chipmaker Broadcom (AVGO), RBC Capital Markets said Thursday.

Broadcom's custom application-specific integrated circuits could provide upside for the company's stock over the next few years, RBC analyst Amit Daryanani said in a note to clients.

"While investors tend to focus on Broadcom's wireless assets, we think their custom ASIC solutions could unlock further upside especially as we think about revenues over the next 2-4 years," Daryanani said.

Broadcom has been involved in co-designing ASICs for hyperscale enterprise systems to handle artificial intelligence and machine learning workloads. These include projects with Alphabet's (GOOGL) Google, Alibaba (BABA) and Cisco Systems (CSCO), he said.

Daryanani estimates that ASICs for the artificial intelligence market could be a revenue opportunity for Broadcom that's worth $2 billion to $3 billion over the next few years.

Broadcom has limited competition in the custom ASIC business, Daryanani said. Rivals include STMicroelectronics (STM) and GlobalFoundries.

Broadcom lost 2.9% to close at 234.04on the stock market today.

Elsewhere in the semiconductor sector Thursday, Oppenheimer reiterated its outperform rating on Monolithic Power Systems (MPWR) after meeting with management this week.

"Tone remains bullish as management outlined the long-term vision for continued outsized (organically driven) growth," Oppenheimer analyst Rich Schafer said in a note to clients.

"Monolithic Power Systems has delivered high-teens annual (percentage) growth the past several years," Schaefer said. "We believe this growth is poised to accelerate as new opportunities in four key vectors take root. These four pillars of growth are high-end notebook, server, game console, and auto. We believe each of these verticals represents about $100 million incremental revenue potential over the next 3 years."

Oppenheimer has a price target of 100 on Monolithic Power.

Monolithic stock fell 1.9% to close at97.12 Thursday.

Unless consumer spending on mobile phones and apps slows down which it wont expect to see these features rolled out in the near term.

The more data your phone collects, the more data it can make use of. When you download an application, youre agreeing to allow that company to use your data, within reason. AI becomes helpful here because it can learn how you use the service and when you share information. Instead of shooting off your data to a company server for harvesting, AI can analyze your data on-device, which keeps it personal and under your control.

Other ways AI is keeping things private is by crowdsourcing anonymized information of multiple consumers without knowing the individual user in a process known as differential privacy. This process still garners links, vocabulary, and emojis used it just doesnt associate a person with them.

Its important to remember that AI and machine learning is in its nascent stage. In the future, localized learning will privatize data while opening doors to anonymous mining, which in turn will expand its benefits. The most noticeable changes AI will bring are processing speed and efficiency letting us do things we already do, but faster and without subjecting our phone to multiple charges. In the end, the whole point of AI is to create a more personalized, user-friendly relationship with our smartphones. The human brain is the most powerful supercomputer on Earth, and now researchers from the University of Southern California are taking inspiration from the structure of the human brain to make better artificial intelligence systems.

Artificial intelligence (or AI) is a system of computing that aims to mimic the power of the human brain.We have more than 100 trillion neurons, or electrically conducting cells in our brain, that give us the incredible computing power for which we are known.Computers can do things like multiply 134,341 by 989,999 really well, but they can't do things like recognize human faces or learn or change their understanding of the world.At least not yet, and that's the goal of AI:to devise a computer system that can learn, process images and otherwise be human-like.

Very good question! Part of this answer is:why not?AI istheholy grail for computerscientists who want to make a computer as powerful asthe human brain. Basically, they want to create a computer that doesn't need to be programmed with all the variables becauseit can learn them just like our brain does.

Another reason scientists are interested in AI is thatit could be used for things like surveillance and face recognition, and having computer systems that can learn new terrain or solve a new problem somewhat autonomously, which, in certain situations, could be very beneficial.

In order to fully mimic the power of our own cognitive capacity, we have to first understand how the brain works, which is a feat in and of itself.We have to re-engineer and re-envision the computer to be completely different from hardware to software and everything in between, and the reason we have to do this has to do with how our brains are powered.

"If we compare, for example, our brain to the super computers we have today,they run on megawatts, [which is] a huge amount of power that's equivalent to a few hundred households, while our brain only relies on water and sandwiches to function," saidartificial intelligence and computing expert Han Wang from the University of Southern California said."It consumes power that's equivalent to a light bulb."

So you see the incredible efficiency of millions of years of evolution on our brain means we have learned to work with limited resources and become so power-efficient that we can beat a supercomputer for complex processing without breaking the energy bank.

This is where the main difference between the brain and the computer lie.

"Our current computers, there's a very powerful corebut then you have a long queue of tasks [which]come in sequentially and are processed sequentially," Wang said. "While our brain, the computation of units, which are the neurons, are connected in highly parallel manner. It's this high level parallelism that has advantages in learning and recognition."

So it's the parallelism in the brain that allows us to use only what we need only when we need it, and to not waste energy on running background processes that we all know slow down our computing power.

It's this concept of running at low energy in parallel circuits. The key to this is to make computer circuits more complex in the messagesthey can send.

In a typical computer, we think that each node sends a one or a zero, and then there's a series of ones and zerosuntil a program is made.

In the brain, it's a very small circuit and they can send a onewhich means go, a zerowhich means no signal, and/ora two that says stop, or both a one and a twoat the same time.

In other words, our brains can send double the information in any given exchange compared to a computer, and that, coupled with smaller networks working in parallel, reduces the power strain.

What Wang and colleagues did was to create a system of wires that connect using tin selenite and black phosphate that can send, stop, go, do nothing, or do both signals, dependingon the voltage sent.

Nowthe plan is to re-engineer the computer from the ground up andbuild a computer that has the capacity for these low voltage decisions that aren't wired through these few cores that we see today, but instead with each circuit of messages working in parallel like the brain does.

Until recently, this was a theoretical concept because there was really no way to send as much information in a single transmission as we have now.

So, artificial intelligence is only a few incredible brilliant research careers away from a reality.

Control over global aircraft markets has been a cornerstone of the United States economic and military power for decades. American aviation giants such as Boeing, along with their supply chains, generate significant economic activity for the country, bringing in the largest foreign trade surplus of all domestic industries. A strong civil aerospace industry bolsters the defense sector, developing a trained workforce and manufacturing capabilities that make it easier for the United States to produce the most sophisticated military aircraft in the world. As significant international competition for aerospace sales emerges, however, the United States will need to look for solutions to maintain its competitive aerospace edge. One such solution is to embrace the development of supersonic flight.

In May, Russia and China carried out maiden flights of their first domestically-produced commercial passenger jets. A joint Russian-Chinese venture is looking to develop a new advanced airliner. India and Japan, too, are forging ahead with their own passenger aircraft programs. If these programs are successful, they could threaten the United States current aerospace preeminence in the mid- to long-term.

Foreign competition, a reflection of both developing industrial centers-of-gravity abroad and growing foreign confidence in homegrown technologies, should serve as a warning for the United States. Preserving a dominant position in international aircraft sales and aerospace technology is in both the hard and soft power foreign policy interests of the United States. American aerospace manufacturers should embrace the development of innovative high technologies that differentiate their products from the offerings of foreign competitors. Leveraging advanced capabilities that nascent foreign competitors are, despite their recent progress, still far from developing may open new markets in which American companies can secure controlling shares.

There is a general consensus in the West that foreign aircraft programs do not represent an immediate challenge to the United States manufacturers. Nonetheless, Chinese and Russian single-aisle, short- to mid-range airplanes the workhorses of the worlds airlines will eventually create direct competition with the mainstays of American aviation sales. Chinas sales to state-run airlines in particular will capture a share of the market that is expected to grow tremendously in coming years.

This competition is why American airplane manufacturers should look toward supersonic passenger aircraft planes that fly faster than the speed of sound. Supersonic development presents the opportunity to break decades-long stagnation in a significant area of aircraft innovation: speed. Innovation that foreign aircraft manufacturers cannot offer in this field would differentiate manufacturers enough to maintain a presence in increasingly congested markets such as China, where foreign companies will be going head-to-head with American standard offerings.

With cheaper modern materials and superior engines, the costs of supersonics are less prohibitive than during the times of the iconic Concorde jet. Market studies have pegged the potential sales for supersonic aircraft at as high as $260 billion. With that, some commercial ventures are already looking into supersonics, and NASA has recently launched design work on quieter, more efficient supersonic planes. The first commercial supersonic aircraft will likely start off as a regional business jet, which is easier and less costly to make supersonic, and may grow larger as markets expand and the technology is refined.

Yet substantial regulatory barriers remain. In 1973, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) issued a total prohibition on civilian aircraft traveling faster than the speed of sound over the United States and its territorial waters. This has limited supersonic jets to the transoceanic market, which is not useful for business jets. A leading reason for the prohibition was concern over sound; supersonic aircraft produce a sonic boom as they pass through the sound barrier.

This is a legitimate concern, even if modern supersonic designs are striving toward muffling the sonic booms they produce. Still, a blanket-ban on all supersonic flight over land stifles progress before it can be made leaving the industry grounded. Instead, the FAA should issue noise standards for supersonic aircraft consistent with other loud yet brief noises found reasonable in daily life.

Federal support for high-technology like supersonics is important to establish an enabling regulatory environment that gives technologists and entrepreneurs room to experiment. As was the case with technologists and entrepreneurs in the biplane, piston-engine, and early jet ages, the American aerospace industry could, with the right support, develop advanced, differentiated products that maintain US dominance in the global market with or without foreign competition. In doing so, American aerospace leadership and with it, the economic power and advanced national security industrial base that maintains it would be sustained despite the best efforts of foreign competitors.

The aero engine maker will spend 150million over the next few years on new and existing civil aerospace facilities which will protect more than 7,000 jobs across the East Midlands.

The investment will support Rolls planned doubling of engine production to deliver on its record civil aerospace order book.

The FTSE 100 company, which employs 22,300 people around the country, will spend 90million on building a new testing facility for jet engines in Derby, creating up to 200 jobs.

This test centre will be large enough to put a range of engines through their paces, including the Trent XWB that powers the Airbus A350 XWB and is the worlds fastest-selling large civil engine.

More than 1,600 are on order from 45 customers in 31 countries.

It also assembles the Trent 700 engines for the Airbus A330 and Trent 900 engines for the Airbus A380 in Derby.

Rolls will retain a precision machinery plant in Derby previously earmarked for closure, preserving about 150 jobs, and invest in manufacturing in Derby and Hucknall, Nottinghamshire.

Its civil aerospace president, Eric Schulz, said: This investment comes at a time of unprecedented growth in Rolls-Royce. We are doubling the production of new engines at the same time as introducing three new engines.

With this investment we are creating the capacity and flexibility to deliver on our goals while committing to sustain employment in the UK. I would like to thank the unions for their support in delivering this important package of investment.

Business Secretary Greg Clark hailed the vote of confi dence in the UK economy and the boost for Rolls domestic suppliers.

The Seattle Mayor's race took on new clarity on Thursday, with two endorsements that count and a rumored candidacy finally, for-sure abandoned.

The big news was incumbent Seattle Mayor Ed Murray declaring support for former U.S. Attorney Jenny Durkan, and saying he would not mount a write-in campaign to retain his job. The news was trumpeted by news outlets that had speculated how Murray could run.

The day saw a second endorsement and one which counts.

The Boeing Aerospace Machinists, Lodge 751, gave their sole endorsement to former State Rep. Jessyn Farrell.

"In this crowded race, Jessyn stands out as the strongest candidate with a record of achieving results for the working families united under IAM 751," said Larry Brown, the union's political/legislative director.

Those words sure won't help State Sen. Bob Hasegawa, D-11, who has relentlessly stressed his background as a Teamsters Union reformer, and even hinted that lessons from his work at Teamsters Local 174 will be applied at City Hall.

It's hard to handicap an election being held during a season when Seattle (and Washington) tunes out politics.

The 2017 primary election is on August 1, during THE week of the year in which the Emerald City is most likely to experience clear, warm weather.

Still, Durkan and Farrell have "the big Mo" -- momentum.

Durkan has so-far reported raising $286,695. She has backing from the political arm of the Seattle Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce. Mayor Murray depicted Durkan as the adult in the room among 21 candidates, and took a telling shot at former Mayor Mike McGinn, who is seeking a comeback.

"There is one candidate in the current field who has the leadership skills to ensure that City Hall does not fall back into the paralysis and divisiveness that we've seen in the recent past," said Murray, a reference to the administration of his predecessor.

McGinn brings name recognition to the race. He hasn't raised much money, however, and is showing very little support in Democratic endorsement meetings. He is greeted politely but the atmosphere is very different from the candidacy that caught on eight years ago.

Farrell is moving, is impressively in control of her campaign message, and is seeking to define herself as the credible progressive in the race.

She has big name support -- three statewide elected officials including Lt. Governor Cyrus Habib -- and has won endorsements from several big unions. The Boeing Machinists' backing was preceded by Teamster Local 117 and United Food & Commercial Workers Local 21.

Farrell helped win the Machinists by sponsoring legislation tying Boeing's big tax breaks to its willingness to keep jobs in the region. Of course, such legislation will never go anywhere as long as Republicans control the Washington State Senate.

Very much the old shoe labor leader, Hasegawa has shown up well at some Democratic meetings. He copped a dual endorsement with Farrell on her home turf of the 46th District in northeast Seattle, which she has represented in the Legislature for the past five years.

Hasegawa won backing from King County Democrats this week. The party endorses -- often after feuds -- despite the fact that legislative districts back candidates on their own, and deliver the campaign workers.

In that she is not a Democrat, educator/lawyer/Black Lives Matter activist Nikkita Oliver is not allowed to compete for Democratic endorsements. She is, however, a formidable personal presence in the race.

A consequential Democratic activist, Michael Maddux, heard Oliver speak at his daughter's middle school graduation. "I was inspired by her words and hope the kids were as well," Maddux posted on Facebook. He went on, however, to fault Oliver for ignorance of issues facing the city.

Cary Moon has the largest amount of personal money into the campaign, $40,000 of a war chest just under $90,000. The urban planner, a leader in the Peoples Waterfront Coalition that opposed the deep bore tunnel, has matched her donors' money.

The race for the 7th floor of City Hall will see another shoe drop on Friday. The Municipal League of King County will come out with its candidate ratings.

The ratings have credibility, enhanced by denunciations by candidates who do not fare well and media outlets on the city's far left.

The Muny League gave a boost to Ed Murray in 2013, and its tepid rating helped show 12-year Seattle City Council member Jean Godden the door in the 2015 primary.

If Durkan and Farrell do well, expect support to gravitate their way.

Thinking outside the prepreg box in aerospace – CompositesWorld

Dr. Thomas Tsotsis, technical fellow, materials and process technology at Boeing Research & Technology (Huntington Beach, CA, US), was a keynote speaker at the Society of Plastics Engineers (SPE) ANTEC conference in Anaheim, CA, on May 10. Tsotsis presentation title was simple: A path for composites. It might also have been titled, My composites wish list.

Admittedly, the composites manufacturing strategy of a company as big as Boeing cannot be ascribed to one person at Boeing, but Tsotsis long experience with aerocomposites gives his words weight, and what he had to say was intriguing.

First, he reviewed the history of prepreg use, noting that it became the preferred material form because it enabled manufacturers to achieve consistent resin/matrix ratios in finished products. Prepregs also have been well qualified and are well supported by material characterization data. He also acknowledged that prepregs are difficult to form into complex shapes, have a limited working life and must be kept frozen when not in use, and require expensive monument equipment ATLs and autoclaves that tend to become workflow bottlenecks.

Liquid molding, on the other hand, he said, offers fabricators the use of three-dimensional (3D) preforms, braids and weaves (i.e., the material flexibility to meet a greater variety of end-use requirements) eliminates the use of an autoclave and requires no freezer. Downsides? Fiber/resin ratios are more difficult to control with liquid molding, composites made via liquid molding are not as well qualified, and liquid molding processes require additional quality-control steps that prepregs dont require. Further, he admitted that companies like Boeing have invested millions of dollars in autoclaves, thus their use is, in many ways, imperative.

In short, said Tsotsis, he believes the aerospace industry needs to get out of the prepreg box and look more seriously at new chemistries, collaborate to develop reliable design models, increase automation, reduce assembly costs, more proactively address environmental concerns, and more effectively leverage already developed knowledge from other composites end-markets.

From the design side, Tsotsis said he would like to see more innovation in chemistry so that resins can be tailored to designs, rather than having to tailor designs to chemistries, which he believes is the current modus operandi. In addition, he said he would like to see molecular dynamics tools better developed and definitively linked to verifiable test data. And model development, on the whole, he said, is too siloed and needs to be addressed more cooperatively and collaboratively with suppliers, OEMs and researchers. Finally, he said, modeling of strength needs a quantum improvement to be truly useful.

On the aerocomposites manufacturing floor, Tsotsis said, quality control drives everything, and because of that, process control is paramount. But, unlike the automotive industry, where quality is measured by process consistency, aerospace relies on 100% inspection of finished parts, regardless of process quality. The difference, of course, is the degree of risk involved, and in aerospace, it is assumed there is no room for error.

Tsotsis ended his presentation with a reminder of the value of change, and a desire for a willingness to see technical maturation continue: Just because weve done something that way does not mean its the best way.

Amy Pritchett appointed head of Penn State Aerospace Engineering – Penn State News

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. Amy R. Pritchett has been named head of the Department of Aerospace Engineering at Penn State, effective Aug. 15.

Currently, Pritchett is the David S. Lewis Professor in the Daniel Guggenheim School of Aerospace Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech). She is also the director of Georgia Techs Cognitive Engineering Center and is a joint professor in the Stewart School of Industrial and Systems Engineering.

Amy won over our community with her unique approach of technical rigor and sense of community, said Amr Elnashai, Harold and Inge Marcus Dean of Engineering. Her leadership style will undoubtedly propel the department to new levels of accomplishment while maintaining and even enhancing its technical and social fabric.

Pritchett will take over departmental duties from Philip J. Morris, Boeing/A.D. Welliver Professor of Aerospace Engineering, who has been serving as interim department head since the departure of George Lesieutre. Lesieutre accepted a position as associate dean for research in the College of Engineering in August 2016. Morris will remain as a professor within the department.

Ive found the faculty to be energizing with their new ideas and sheer love of aerospace engineering, and Im excited to be joining in with so many noted experts spanning fields important to the future of aerospace, said Pritchett. Both aviation and spaceflight are on the cusp of new breakthroughs, and I hope to take the insights and knowledge that our department has been generating here at Penn State and help disseminate them broadly not just to the research community, but also to the decision makers in industry and government who need to know what we can contribute. Pritchett served a two-year term as the director of NASAs Aviation Safety Program from 2008 to 2009, and served as a senior research fellow at Delft University of Technology in 2002. Prior to joining Georgia Tech in 1997, she was a doctoral student and researcher at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

She is a Fellow of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society and an Associate Fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA). She chartered the Aviation Safety Assurance Research Planning team in 2011, for which she received a NASA Group Achievement Award. She also received the National Aeronautic Association 2008 Robert J. Collier Trophy as part of the Commercial Aviation Safety Team; the AIAA Lawrence Sperry Award in 2007; and the Georgia TechCenter for Enhancement of Teaching and LearningCurriculum Innovation Award in 2014. In 2009, the AIAA Digital Avionics Technical Committee created the Dr. Amy R. Pritchett Digital Avionics Scholarship to recognize technical and service contributions by college students in the field of avionics.

Pritchetts research interests include examining the intersection of automated and intelligent technologies, expert human performance and safety-critical operations. This framing particularly applies to modern commercial aviation, but also extends to other areas such as long-duration spaceflight missions.

To have a department head who is concurrently a top researcher is a great feature of Amys appointment, added Elnashai. She will not only lead the academic programs in the department, but she will also play a pivotal role in its research enterprise.

Pritchett earned her bachelors, masters and doctoral degrees in aeronautics and astronautics from MIT.

Minister questioned in Israel Aerospace Industries corruption probe … – The Jerusalem Post

Labor and Social Services Minister Haim Katz was questioned at Lahav 433 headquarters in Lod on Thursday as a suspect in an ongoing corruption probe into Israels largest state-owned aviation manufacturer, Israel Aerospace Industries, police said.

Katz is suspected of ethical violations and threats, according to police. The suspicions reportedly involve Katz a member of the Likud Party and former chairman of the National Workers Union of IAI allegedly threatening people to join the Likud and vote for him in party primaries.

The minister was questioned for about five hours. He denies any wrongdoing.

The IAI investigation became public in March, after 13 people were arrested on suspicion of corruption, offenses which included aggravated fraud, money laundering, theft by a public servant, fraud and breach of trust. Later in March, Katzs son Yair, who is chairman of the engineering sector of the IAI workers committee, was arrested on suspicion of granting benefits to IAI employees in exchange for them joining the Likud Party.

Retired IDF Brig.-Gen. Amal Asad was also among those arrested on suspicions of receiving bribes from businessmen at technology company DruzeNet to further the companys interests with IAI.

Asad denies any wrongdoing.

Attorney Illan Bombach, who represents Yair Katz, told The Jerusalem Post in March that his client denied the allegations against him and was cooperating fully with the police. Bombach argued that the investigation was motivated by interests seeking to overthrow Katz and that his client has no control over IAI employees futures. Furthermore, Bombach argued, police provided no evidence of any correlation between Likud membership and career advancement at the IAI.

The arrests in what is termed Case 630, came after an extensive, nearly yearlong undercover investigation by the Lahav 433 anti-fraud unit in cooperation with the Tax Authority, Ministry of Defense Security Authority, or Malmab an internal investigation branch of the Defense Ministry accompanied by the State Attorneys Office Economic Department.

The investigation comprised a large number of sub-allegations raising suspicion of corruption offenses including aggravated fraud, money laundering, theft by a public servant, fraud and breach of trust, the polices Intelligence and Investigations Division said in a statement last week.

According to police, the investigation raised the suspicion of systematic criminal behavior and deep corruption seemingly commonplace in Israel Aerospace Industries.

There are two prize categories, Technology Transfer Success and New Business Innovation. The Ministry of the Economy of Luxembourg hosts the Luxembourg Prize in the category New Business Innovation, alongside several other prizes.

The Luxembourg Prize integrates perfectly into the SpaceResources.lu initiative, as it aims to discover innovative ideas and business cases complementing the Grand Duchys growing portfolio of activities in space resources utilisation. The challenge addresses companies, universities, scientific institutions, start-ups, and individuals willing to set-up a sustainable business and to create economic substance by establishing and registering a company in Luxembourg. The call for submissions covers the full value chain of space resources of prospection, extraction, processing, utilisation, and distribution.

The proposals submitted by the participants will be assessed by an interdisciplinary jury. The proposals should offer a long-term vision for space resources utilisation, but also be able to generate an economic return in the short and medium-term, by using their solution in existing space and terrestrial markets. The winners will be announced at the NewSpace Europe conference hosted by Luxembourg on November 16 and 17, 2017.

The Grand Duchy offers two awards within the frame of the Luxembourg Prize. The first one is designed to support for up to 400.000 euros a study under the Luxembourg national space program that is managed by ESA. The other award is intended for projects that are ready for early-stage funding. This award will offer a crowd investing campaign on http://www.spacestarters.com with a 30.000 euros value of services to prepare the campaign for launch.

The Luxembourg Ministry of the Economy will support both award winners by incubating their companies in one of Luxembourgs incubators. On top of that, one of the two winners will be selected as the official winner of the Luxembourg Prize and will thus be eligible for the Excellence in Space Exploration derived Business Innovation overall prize of the Space Exploration Masters New Ideas for Business Innovation competition category.

Malaysian nanotech firm signs RM257mil MoU with Swiss company – The Star Online

ASTANA, KAZAKHSTAN: A Malaysian nanotechnology company at the Astana Expo 2017 here has exchanged a US$60mil (RM257mil) memorandum of understanding (MoU) with a Swiss-based company.

Nanopac (M) Sdn Bhd and GC Global Consulting GMBH exchanged the MoU at the expo's Malaysian Pavilion Wednesday in the presence of Malaysian ambassador to Kazakhstan Syed Mohamad Bakri Syed Abd Rahman.

According to Nanopac chief operating officer Datuk Dr Cheng Kok Leong, GC Global was interested in its nano light energy panel as well as its self-sustaining toilet.

He added that the Swiss company wanted to apply the self-sustaining toilet technology in the boat manufacturing industry.

"We have technology which enables toilet waste to be treated immediately," said Cheng.

He added the system used fuelcell technology, which does not require waste to be taken elsewhere to be treated.

"The fuelcell technology is a new technology, which is coupled with an electrolysis kind of concept to treat toilet waste," he said, adding that the system was very efficient and used minimal electricity and water.

He said GC Global was keen on the environmentally friendly aspect of the technology.

"Now if you go to the toilet in a boat, the waste is discharged into the sea.

"They are concerned about this in Europe and saw the potential in our product," said Cheng.

He added the treated sewage water can be safely discharged into the sea or reused in the flush system.

Astana Expo 2017 kicked off on June 10 with the participation of some 100 nations and more than 10 international organisations.

The theme of the 93-day expo is "Energy of the Future", which is aimed at addressing the global problem of energy consumption.

The war on drugs is back. Will psychedelic drug research survive? – The Verge

After the 1970s Controlled Substance Act criminalized all psychedelics, there was a long period of silence in US psychedelic research. That has changed in the last 20 years; since 2002, as many as 26 studies were approved, including landmark research on MDMA-assisted therapy for veterans suffering PTSD. But with President Donald Trump in office, is the resurrected research movement in danger?

The people really calling the shots are those far closer to Trump than those running the FDA.

It depends. Two agencies are crucial for the burgeoning field: the US Food and Drug Administration and the Drug Enforcement Agency. Some researchers see the Trump FDA as potentially helpful, since new commissioner Scott Gottlieb has made statements in favor of scaling back regulations. Other researchers are leery of the DEA. Thats because the DEA is overseen by the Department of Justice under the supervision of Jeff Sessions, who has requested that Congress allow him to prosecute marijuana cases in states that have legalized medical marijuana. Its not yet clear which agency will set the psychedelic agenda, and increased enforcement action from the Justice Department could scare scientists away from the field.

I do feel very optimistic," says Rick Doblin, executive director of psychedelic research nonprofit MAPS, a leading funder of psychedelic research. "One of the Trump administration's main things is lower regulation. They're pro business and pro making it easier for Big Pharma to get drugs through the FDA. And that benefits us."

But the FDA isnt as far up the food chain as other influential agencies. DEA licenses are required for psychedelic research. And Trump has given Attorney General Sessions plenty of leeway in drug policy, says Erik Altieri, executive director of marijuana-focused nonprofit NORML. It seems that the people really calling the shots are those far closer to Trump than those running the FDA, says Altieri. The proof will be in the pudding here about who actually sways Trump's opinion, and what he will be willing to tolerate.

Psychedelics remain Schedule 1. They are categorized among a class of substances purported to have no medical application and high risk of abuse, and bearing the harshest penalties for recreational use. Any clinical use of psychedelics in the US must go through a rigorous DEA licensing and FDA approval process.

Many researchers hope that the FDA will maintain the framework developed by a unit called Pilot Drug Evaluation Staff, which first greenlit pilot studies with psychedelics in the early 1990s. Before, the FDA had denied approving or shelved research protocols with psychedelics. But in large part because of practices established by Pilot Drug, like expedited drug review and direct scientist-to-scientist communication between researchers and the FDA, psychedelic research restarted, and has only gained momentum since.

The FDA is fairly apolitical, says psychedelic research chemist and pharmacologist David Nichols. He is the president of the Heffter Research Institute, which has funded 12 FDA-approved clinical psychedelic studies since Pilot Drug. Congress would have to push to change that, and he doesnt believe that will happen. We're just a flea on the back of this dog.

Though the FDA is more friendly to psychedelics than ever before, getting the approval to test compounds is a long and complicated process. Doblin hopes that Trumps FDA commissioner Scott Gottlieb will simplify it, thanks to a key Trump administration talking point: deregulation. Gottliebs public statements endorse cutting regulatory processes in favor of quickened drug approvals though he hasnt specifically addressed psychedelic research.

But deregulation has risks. Regulations are not arbitrary rules; each is set in place for a specific reason. They are designed to reduce risk during studies and prevent harm to patients after drugs go to market. The unintended consequences [of deregulating] would require so much wisdom on the part of the people making the changes to be staggering, says Dan Spyker, a former medical officer for the FDAs Pilot Drug and deputy division director. You can't just say, 'Well, I'm going to cut the regs.' It's complicated.

Jag Davies, director of communications strategy at Drug Policy Alliance, agrees. Overall I would be more concerned about the danger of erasing our food and drug safety standards than excited about the possibility of easier psychedelic research, says Davies. I don't think ultimately that's a good thing.

Another federal department has begun to set an increasingly conservative tone towards illicit drugs under Trump: the Department of Justice, which oversees the DEA.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions renewed drug war highlighted by his two-page memo ordering DOJ staff to pursue harsher sentences for drug offenders, and by his pitch to Congress that the DOJ should be allowed to prosecute medical marijuana providers has already given drug reform advocates new reason to worry. We've really stepped into mass mobilization of preparing for the worst, quite frankly, says NORMLs Altieri.

Marijuana is not a psychedelic, and yet its subject to even stricter research regulation. In addition to the requisite DEA and FDA sign-offs, the National Institute on Drug Abuse must supply the cannabis for all studies. Marijuana is legal in eight states and permitted for medical use in 30, so a hardline stance on marijuana is likely to chill all research on illicit drugs, says Altieri. Psychedelics arent legal anywhere, so getting approval for a drug like psilocybin might seem like a bigger ask to regulators, he says.

Historically, Health and Human Services which supervises FDA defers to the DOJ when it comes to drug policy, says Davies. For instance, during Bill Clintons presidency, HHS secretary Donna Shalala proposed federally funded needle exchanges a harm-reduction program. Drug czar Barry McCaffrey overruled her. Psychedelics researchers must obtain DEA licenses to conduct their studies; if Sessions wants to block drug research, he can make the license application process harder, Davies says.

Though researchers know more than ever about psychedelic drugs and some studies have found promising potential uses for them none of the research renaissance has translated into law enforcement policy. These laws target people of color and low-income communities, and mandate incarceration for possession. Sessions is unwilling to consider research suggesting medical marijuana may actually help some people; it is unlikely hell push for any kind of reform for psychedelics, either. And hes taken a hard line on sentencing.

MAPSs Doblin thinks MDMA will be made legal for prescription use, in tandem with psychotherapy, by 2021. But, he adds, I can feel both optimistic, and it's still a long road ahead. He views Sessions hard line on sentencing as the other sort of counterpoint to his optimism.

Despite their working relationship with the FDA, researchers are fearful that a Sessions-led Justice Department might undo all the progress made since the 90s.Its just so scary Jeff Sessions and the drug war, and that we would go backwards after all this work and money, says Ann Mithoefer, co-therapist on the ongoing MDMA-assisted psychotherapy and PTSD studies funded by MAPS, alongside her husband Michael. Even Doblin acknowledges that the overarching political climate is very negative.

Mithoefer and Doblin continue to place their trust in the FDA, even though the DOJ is becoming more hostile. A May 11th meeting with the FDA about the Mithoefers MAPS-funded MDMA Phase 3 protocol was beyond positive, Doblin says. We came to an agreement on all the elements of the studys design.

The biggest challenge for the study right now isnt federal regulation. Its fundraising. Most US voters dont support legal medical use of most illicit drugs, so funding is difficult. And thats one final place where Trump administration policy may bog down psychedelic research.

The Trump administration tends to make decisions about mental health care and substance abuse treatment without consulting the body of scientific literature thats built up over the decades. Trumpcare restricts access to mental health care and substance abuse treatment programs. Thats because the highest priority appears to be budget cuts. So Gottliebs hands-off rhetoric might not mean much, since HHS secretary Tom Price is more interested in defunding his department than deregulating it. Trumps proposed budget for 2018 has a 16.2 percent cut for HHS.

Psychedelic research has never received government grants from HHS departments, relying instead on donors to nonprofits like MAPS and Heffter. So, the current administrations intent to slash the US science budget wont matter there. But if more scientists have to find private funding to continue their work, psychedelics may no longer be a priority for donors.

Thats a setback. In fact, Heffters Nichols had hoped the recent surge in compelling clinical data would encourage HHS to lend its funding support to psychedelic research. The studies are expensive; they can cost more than a million dollars. But if independently funded work had shown enough benefits, Nichols thought, it seemed possible that government funding might be forthcoming. That hope died when Trump took office.

"The funding will be the biggest problem, Nichols says. I don't see legal problems, I don't see clinical problems so much. The real problem I see is what the proposed Trump budget would do, not just to psychedelic research, but to biomedical research in general. And it would be a real disaster."
