STATE OF THE FIRST AMENDMENT | Columns | thehawkeye.com – Burlington Hawk Eye

Every year the First Amendment Center of the Newseum Institute conducts the State of the First Amendment survey, which examines Americans views on freedom of religion, speech, press, assembly and petition, and samples their opinions on contemporary First Amendment issues.

The results of the 2017 survey show that, despite coming out of one of the most politically contentious years in U.S. history, most Americans remain generally supportive of the First Amendment. When asked if the First Amendment goes too far in the rights it guarantees, 69 percent of survey respondents disagreed.

However, there are ideological divisions in attitudes toward the First Amendment, with liberals and conservatives disagreeing on the amount of protection the First Amendment should provide in certain scenarios. Conservatives were more likely than liberals to believe government officials who leak information should be prosecuted and the government should be able to hold Muslims to a higher level of scrutiny. However, liberals were more likely than conservatives to think that colleges should be able to ban speakers with controversial views and people should not be able to express racist views on social media.

This year, 43 percent of Americans agreed that news media outlets try to report the news without bias a significant improvement from only 23 percent in 2016. However, a majority of Americans (61 percent) expressed a preference for news information that aligns with their own views, demonstrating that many Americans may not view biased news in a negative light. The 2017 survey also attempted to assess the impact of the fake news phenomenon. Seventy-four percent of Americans did not think that fake news reports should be protected by the First Amendment, and about one-third (34 percent) reported a decrease in trust in news obtained from social media.

Regarding freedom of religion, 59 percent of Americans believe religious freedom should apply to all religious groups, even those widely considered as extreme or fringe. The age group least likely to agree with this is Americans between the ages of 18 and 29: Just 49 percent of them supported protection for all religious faiths, compared to more than 60 percent for every other age group.

On free speech, 43 percent of Americans felt that colleges should have the right to ban controversial campus speakers. Those who strongly agreed or disagreed with this tended to be current students and/or activists (people who had participated in political actions during the past year, such as signing a petition or attending a protest) on both sides of the political spectrum. Other Americans even those in the 18 to 29-year-old millennial demographic were more lukewarm on this issue.

We were glad to find that most Americans still support the First Amendment, although its troubling that almost one in four think that we have too much freedom, said Lata Nott, executive director of the First Amendment Center. Its also troubling that even people who support the First Amendment in the abstract often dislike it when its applied in real life.

Survey conducted and supported by Fors Marsh Group, and contributing support provided by the Gannett Foundation.

Cake shop is pro-First Amendment, not anti-gay marriage | The Daily … – The Daily Gazette

Proponents of gay marriage gather at a rally in June 2015.

Last week, the Supreme Court agreed to hear the case of Masterpiece Cakeshop owner Jack Phillips, the man who refused to create a specialty wedding cake for a same-sex couple in Colorado in 2012.

Yet the stories that dominate coverage distort the publics understanding of the case and its serious implications.

For one thing, no matter how many times people repeat it, the case isnt about discrimination or challenging gay marriage.

But when the news first broke, USA Today, for example, tweeted, The Supreme Court has agreed to reopen the national debate over same-sex marriage.

The headline (and story) on the website was worse; it read, Supreme Court will hear religious liberty challenge to gay weddings.

Others similarly framed the case. (And, dont worry, religious liberty is almost always solidly ensconced inside quotation marks to indicate that social conservatives are just using it as a facade.)

There is an impulse to frame every issue as a clash between the tolerant and the closed-minded.

But the Masterpiece case doesnt challenge, undermine or relitigate the issue of same-sex marriage in America.

Gay marriage wasnt even legal in Colorado when this incident occurred.

So, the Associated Press headline, Supreme Court to Decide If Baker Can Refuse Gay Couple Wedding Cake, and story are also wrong.

As is The New York Times headline Justices to Hear Case on Bakers Refusal to Serve Gay Couple, which was later changed to the even worse headline Justices to Hear Case on Religious Objections to Same-Sex Marriage.

A person with only passing interest in this case might be led to believe that Phillips is fighting to hang a No Gays Allowed sign in his shop.

In truth, he never refused to serve a gay couple.

He didnt even really refuse to sell David Mullins and Charlie Craig a wedding cake.

They could have bought without incident. Everything in his shop was available to gays and straights and anyone else who walked in his door.

What Phillips did was refuse to use his skills to design and bake a unique cake for a gay wedding.

Phillips didnt query about anyones sexual orientation.

It was the Colorado Civil Rights Commission that took it upon itself to peer into Phillips soul, indict him and destroy his business over a thought crime.

Like many other bakers, florists, photographers and musicians and millions of other Christians Phillips holds genuine longstanding religious convictions.

If Mullins and Craig had demanded that Phillips create an erotic-themed cake, the baker would have similarly refused for religious reasons, just as he had with other costumers.

If a couple had asked him to design a specialty cake that read Congrats on the abortion, Jenny!

Im certain he would have refused them as well, even though abortions are legal. Its not the people; its the message.

In its tortured decision, the Colorado Court of Appeals admitted as much, contending that while Phillips didnt overtly discriminate against the couple, the act of same-sex marriage is closely correlated to Craigs and Mullins sexual orientation, so it could divine his real intentions.

In other words, the threshold for denying religious liberty and free expression is the presence of advocacy or a political opinion that conflates with faith.

The court has effectively tasked itself with determining when religion is allowed to matter to you.

Or, in other words, if SCOTUS upholds the lower court ruling, it will empower unelected civil rights commissions which are typically stacked with hard-left authoritarians to decide when your religious actions are appropriate.

How could any honest person believe this was the Constitutions intent?

There was a time, Im told, when the state wouldnt substantially burden religious exercise and would use the least restrictive means to further compelling interests.

Today, the state can substantially burden a Christian because hes hurt the wrong persons feelings.

Judging from the emails and social media reactions Ive gotten regarding this case, people are not only instinctively antagonistic because of the players involved but also because they dont understand the facts.

In this era of identity politics, some have been programed to reflexively side with the person making accusations of status-based discrimination, all in an effort to empower the state to coerce a minority of people to see the world their way.

Well, not all people.

In 2014, a Christian activist named William Jack went to a Colorado bakery and requested two cakes in the shape of a Bible, one to be decorated with the Bible verses God hates sin. Psalm 45:7 and Homosexuality is a detestable sin. Leviticus 18:22, and the other cake to be decorated with another passage.

The bakery refused.

Even though Christians are a protected group, the Colorado Civil Rights Division threw out the case.

The American Civil Liberties Union called the passages obscenities.

I guess the Bible doesnt correlate closely enough with a Christians identity.

Or perhaps weve finally established a state religion in this country: Its run on the dogma of social justice.

Fighting for Free Speech in the Age of Trump and Twitter – Fortune

When Donald Trump began to block a growing number of Americans from seeing his tweets, the Knight First Amendment Institute shot back. The organization warned the President in June that the Twitter account is a public forum, and that excluding citizens (novelist Stephen King is among those blocked ) violates the Constitution.

The argument is novel and not every legal scholar thinks it will succeed. But whatever the outcome, the dispute over Trump's tweets reflects how free speech fights are changing in the digital age. Today, many of the legal battles turn on technology, surveillance and who should control powerful communications platforms, like Facebook and Twitter.

Fortune spoke to the Knight Institute's first director, Jameel Jaffer , and staff attorney, Alex Abdo , to learn more about free speech flash pointsand how they intend to stand up for the First Amendment in the time of Trump.

Free Speech on Facebook's Public Square

Jaffer is an affable, ardent 40-something with a sparkling legal resume: Harvard Law Review, clerk to the Chief Justice of Canada and, most recently, deputy legal director of the ACLU. Now, he has the biggest job of his life leading the Knight Institute.

The goal of the center, which opened this year as a $60 million joint initiative of the Knight Foundation and Columbia University, is to defend free speech through research, lawsuits and education. It will pay close attention to technology.

New technology has transformed the landscape. A lot what used to take place in the public square now takes place on proprietary networks," Jaffer says, pointing to the influence of Facebook and other social media companies on politics.

Get Data Sheet , Fortunes technology newsletter.

Today, these companies have more influence than traditional news outlets. Yet they are less willing to take up the torch when it comes to fighting for the First Amendment in court. Unlike the newspapers that foughtand wonmany landmark First Amendment cases at the Supreme Court in the 1970s and 80s, tech firms are absent from many big free speech fights.

What's more, Jaffer worries the likes of Twitter and Facebook possess too much power over what people can hear and say in the first place. And when it comes to challenging them, it's an uphill legal fight since they are private companies , which are not subject to the First Amendment.

But that doesnt mean its not a free speech issue. Its probably the most important free speech issue of our agethe power of social media companies over the speech we are allowed to hear, says Jaffer.

This why controversies like the one over Donald Trump blocking citizens from seeing his tweets are so important. They involve traditional free speech concernsthe President could never block people from seeing a government web siteand new social media technology.

In July, following another social media rant by the President, the Knight Institute's case that social media is subject to the First Amendment got a little stronger:

Speech in the age of Surveillance

While social media companies control over public discourse is a major threat to free speech, its hardly the Institute's only concern. Another worry is creeping surveillance technology and the government's ability to obtain enormous amounts of informationincluding our location right from the devices in our pockets.

Jaffer fears that increased ability of governments to spy produces a chilling effect. If people know their phones can be tracked, or their contents seized and extracted, they may be less willing to speak freely or criticize the government.

Meanwhile, even as the government expands its surveillance powers, it is getting more adapt at using laws to silence journalism and cover up its own activities.

According to Abdo, the staff attorney at the Knight Institute, the Justice Department has been particularly aggressive in invoking the Espionage Age to threaten reporters. In doing so, he says, it is using unproven legal theories to undermine the ability of journalists to talk to sources and conduct important reporting.

No court has decided how broadly that statute reaches or if it reaches as broadly as the government says it does, and if it violates the First Amendment, says Abdo.

In response, the Knight Amendment intends to advance the legal cause of whistleblowers. Specifically, Abdo says it will make a case that the First Amendment offers a shield for journalists and others who reveal information in the public interest.

Jaffer adds that the Institute will also focus on so-called structural litigation, which aims to reform government practices that stymie free speech and access to documents.

One such example is the growing number of current and former government workers who are subject to security clearance, which bars them from speaking without prior permission. The restraints may be sensible in the context of sensitive intelligence or military operations. But today more than 5 million Americansmany of whom possess little in the way of classified informationare subject to this censorship.

Its the largest system of prior restraints still in place in the United States. We think its unconstitutional, says Jaffer.

FAQ | Jitsi | Prometheism.net euvolution.com

Featured questions (hide)

How do I get the latest Jitsi source code?

You could either clone the Git repository from GitHub (see Retrieving and Building the Sources for details) or use one of the nightly source snapshots (check the Download page).

Ive discovered a bug, what can I do?

Please, report it to the developers! Take a look at the Reporting bugs guidelines page describing the steps to report bugs effectively.

Where is the user profile directory?

Jitsis user profile directory is where Jitsi keeps its configuration, logs, etc. Its location depends on the operating system.

Where do I find the log files?

The easiest way to get hold of the log files is to save them to a location of your choice using Jitsis GUI. You can do so by clicking on ToolsOptions (JitsiPreferences on OS X), then selecting the Advanced tab and opening the Logging form. Youll see the Archive Logs button in there.

Check out the screenshot for an even better description.

Important Note: When asked for logs, please make sure that you provide the full set of logs, or better yet, the zip that Jitsi generates when following the above instructions. Please do not send separate files or file snippets as those are likely to be insufficient. If you need to provide the logs for a GitHub issue, send them to Dev Mailing List and link to the thread in the archive or create a Gist and link to it. Please DO NOT paste the log as a comment.

Otherwise, if you really want to know, the log files are located in:

Where is the configuration file?

Jitsis main configuration file is called sip-communicator.properties and is in the user profile directory.

How do you spell Jitsi and what does it mean?

The correct spelling of the application name is Jitsi (jitsi also works). The origin of the name is Bulgarian (spelled ). It means wires and the point is that the application allow you to connect to many network and people just as wires do. Of course no one other than Bulgarians is supposed to know what this means and we picked the name mainly because it was short and sounded good.

Id like to see a new feature in Jitsi, can you do that for me?

Yes, developers take feature requests into account. Send an email to the development list with a detailed description of the requested feature. After we examine its feasibility and decide whether it can be included in the Jitsi distributions you would likely be asked to open a ticket in our issue tracker. It is worth mentioning though, that handling feature requests is highly dependent of the developers availability and there is no guarantee that all requests will be satisfied.

How do I subscribe to mailing lists?

Please visit the Mailing Lists page to learn more about Jitsis mailing lists.

How do I contact the project developers?

You can ask questions concerning usage of the Jitsi on the dev mailing list (Note that the mailing lists are moderated, so, unless you subscribe to them, there may be a delay before your post shows up). For all urgent queries you could also use IRC at irc.freenode.net, channel #jitsi.

How do I send a patch?

Mail patches to the dev mailing list, with a subject line that contains the word PATCH in all uppercase, for example

A patch submission should contain one logical change; please dont mix N unrelated changes in one submission, send N separate emails instead.

The patch itself should be generated from within the project root directory using unified diff format. The following example shows one way to generate it:

You should give your patch files meaningful names. For instance if you fix a socket bug in the foo class do not call your patch file patchfile.txt but instead call it foo-socket.patch.

If the patch implements a new feature, make sure to describe the feature completely in your mail; if the patch fixes a bug, describe the bug in detail and give a reproduction recipe. An exception to these guidelines is when the patch addresses a specific issue in the issues database in that case, just make sure to refer to the issue number in your log message.

Note that unless you are describing a change rather than posting one, we would probably need you to sign our contributor agreement as either an individual or a corporation

I would like to update this wiki what can I do?

Currently, only project developers are permitted to update the wiki. Please send your suggested changes to the dev mailing list.

A wiki page can be updated by appending the string ?action=edit to the current url and refreshing the page. The page will then be displayed with an extra menu line that includes a Page Edit item.

If you click on the Page Edit item, you will be redirected to a logon page. Enter your developer username and password and you should be redirected back to the original page. Click on Page Edit again to access the source content of the page (a quick reference to wiki markup syntax is also displayed).

How do I reset my XMPP or jit.si password?

You can reset your jit.si password from within Jitsi. You can do the same for any XMPP account that allows it.

In the case of jit.si, you can also change your password via the web

Why cant I connect to ekiga.net?

NB: the problems described in this section also apply to other providers such as 1und1.de

Short Answer: The ekiga.net SIP servers are configured in a way that prevent Jitsi (and many other SIP user agents for that matter) to register with the service. Please use iptel.org or ippi.com instead.

Slightly Longer Answer: The service at ekiga.net is configured to only accept SIP REGISTER requests that contain a public IP address in their Contact header. This means that registration from Jitsi would fail unless you actually have a public IP address. The Ekiga client circumvents this by using STUN to learn the address and port that have been allocated for the current session. It then uses the pair in the SIP Contact header. This kind of use was common for the first version of the STUN protocol defined in RFC 3489 which was sometimes referred to as classic STUN.

The IETF has since significantly reviewed the way STUN should be used. The new version of the protocol is now defined in RFC 5389 which, among other things, advises against the use of STUN as a standalone NAT traversal utility:

Today STUN represents one of the tools used by complete traversal mechanisms such as SIP OUTBOUND (RFC 5626) or ICE (RFC 5245). Neither of these includes sending a STUN obtained address in a Contact header.

So, where does Jitsi currently stand on all this? At the time of writing, we support the ICE protocol but only use it with XMPP. Use with SIP is likely to come in the near future. The reason we havent implemented it yet is that most SIP servers currently open to use over the Internet, use a technique called latching. When such servers detect you are connecting from behind a NAT, they would start acting as a relay, receiving media from your peers and then forwarding it to you (and vice versa). While this is by far the most reliably way of traversing NATs, it does indeed imply some scalability constraints.

ICE on the other hand would only fall back to relaying if no other way was found to connect the two participants. This is why it is considered as a more optimal solution and why its also on our roadmap.

Note however that the constraints on ekiga.net would continue preventing Jitsi from connecting even when we do implement support for ICE.

Why do I see ICE failed errors when trying to make calls.

Jitsi implements a number of NAT traversal methods as described here. In many situations we will be able to setup a call directly between you and other users but in order to be able to reliably establish calls, your XMPP or SIP provider has to provide relaying capabilities such as TURN, Jingle Nodes or . If looking for services that support these you can try jit.si or ippi. Also note that both you and your partner need to have unhindered outgoing UDP access to the Internet or at least to your VoIP service provider. You DO NOT however need to map any port numbers on your home router. At best this is going to have no effect.

Does Jitsi support STUN? (and how about TURN, UPnP and Jingle Nodes?)

STUN, together with TURN, Jingle Nodes, IPv6 and UPnP, is one of the techniques that Jitsi uses as part of the Interactive Connectivity Establishment (ICE) protocol to handle NAT traversal for calls made over XMPP.

For its SIP calls, Jitsi currently relies on servers to relay media (a technique also known as Hosted NAT Traversal or latching, which would be the case of the majority of the SIP servers used on the Internet today. Note that in terms of reliability Hosted NAT Traversal gives the same results as use of ICE. It even works better in some ways because the connection is setup immediately and no time is waisted for gathering candidates and making connectivity checks. The only downside of HNT is that it may put a strain on SIP providers requiring more bandwidth. This could become a problem especially in environments with a high number of all IP high quality video calls.

It is likely that ICE support for SIP calls would also be added to Jitsi in 2014 especially since this would also help with WebRTC compatibility.

Standalone support for STUN is NOT going to be part of Jitsi. Check out the ekiga entry for more information on the shortcomings of STUN as a standalone NAT traversal utility.

I have a few questions regarding ZRTP, SRTP and VoIP security in general. Where can I find some answers?

Check out our ZRTP FAQ.

Why does my call stay in the Initiating Call status and I can never connect?

A common reason for providers not to respond to calls is that they simply dont get the INVITE request Jitsi sends to them. This can happen if you are using UDP. The Jitsi INVITE requests may often exceed the maximum allowed packet size (MTU) for your network or that of your server. In such cases packets may be fragmented by your IP stack and fragmentation for UDP does not always work well in certain networks. This is what happens when a client supports multiple features ;). To resolve the issue you can do one of the following:

How does on-line provisioning work?

On-line provisioning is the feature that allows Jitsi to connect to an http URI every time it starts and retrieve part or all of its configuration there. On-line provisioning is often used by providers to remotely configure the clients they maintain. It can be used to set any property in Jitsi such as the codecs used, the features that users can manually configure and even protocol accounts.

When requesting its provisioning information Jitsi can transmit any of a number of parameters to the server, like for example: the OS it is running on, user credentials, a unique ID and others. This way the provisioning server can fine-tune the parameters it sends to Jitsi.

For more information, please check our on-line provisioning manual

Are my chat sessions protected and if so, how?

Jitsi supports the OTR encryption protocol. OTR stands for Off-the-Record Messaging and once youve set it up (i.e. clicked on that padlock icon in a chat window and verified the identity of your contact) it allows you to make sure that no one other than you two can read your messages, not even your service provider. You can find more on the OTR mechanisms here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Off-the-Record_Messaging

Should logging be disabled by default when using OTR?

By default Jitsi stores all chats so that if you need any information from them it would always be available. If you would like to disable this behavior you can currently do so by opening Jitsis Options/Preferences, selecting the General pane and then unchecking the Log chat history option near the top. It is also possible to disable chats for specific contacts, to erase their history. An indicator in the chat window makes it aware at all times whether history is on or off while chatting with someone.

OTR protected chats follow the same pattern and some users have expressed concerns that this might be incompatible with their security expectations. Our position on this is that Jitsis role is to protect your communication. We also strive to offer usability. The current defaults represent these objectives: most people would prefer for their private communication not to be readable by third parties and most of the time people use Jitsi from personal devices where they are in control of the access policy.

In some cases users may wish for their communications not to be stored locally. This can be the case when using Jitsi on devices that others may also have access to. In such cases users need to be able to easily see whether history is being logged. They would also need to easily turn this off and potentially even erase previous history.

Note however that this subject is entirely different from the encryption one. They are separate measures meant to protect you against separate attacks or problems. We dont believe that the need for one would necessarily imply the need for the other. We are hence committed to also keeping that separation in the user interface.

Force SIP Message support.

Some SIP servers (Asterisk in particular) do not announce the MESSAGE support, despite supporting it. If you enable the account property FORCE_MESSAGING, Jitsi will attempt to use MESSAGE for chats, despite your configured SIP server not explicitly announcing this support to connected clients. For example, if your SIP account is john.smith@example.com, go to property editor type that in the search field and look for something like

net.java.sip.communicator.impl.protocol.sip.acc0123456789.ACCOUNT_UID with the value SIP:john.smith@example.com

The property to add in that case would be:

net.java.sip.communicator.impl.protocol.sip.acc0123456789.FORCE_MESSAGING with the value true.

How to add/edit configuration properties.

You can do so by clicking on ToolsOptions (JitsiPreferences on OS X), then selecting the Advanced tab and opening the Property Editor form. There you can search edit/delete or create new properties.

Is there an an Android version of Jitsi?

Yes, but it is still in an early alpha stage and further development has been put on hold until further notice. A lot of the user interface is not yet implemented. You can find the apk on the Download page.

Is there an iPhone/iPad version of Jitsi?

No. Due to the restrictions imposed by the platform it is highly unlikely this answer is going to change.

The cc-buildloop target of ant fails with the following error message: Could not create task or type of type: junitreport.

On some Linux distributions such as Debian, the ant package is actualy subdivided into multiple packages. So when you chose to install junit and ant with the distribution specific package system, dont forget to install ant-optional too.

The cc-buildloop target of ant fails with the following error message: No test with id=IcqProtocolProviderSlick.

Have you created your own accounts.properties file in the lib directory? Youll need to define two ICQ test accounts at least, and preferably some test accounts for the other supported protocols.

Cryptocurrency Hash Rental Service Review Nicehash – The Merkle

Summary

Nicehash is an excellent platform for people looking for multipool mining or a way to buy and sell hashpower. The platform is very transparent about its business and has built up a solid reputation over the past three years.

It is not all that easy to find a legitimate cryptocurrency cloud mining service. Nicehash is one of the few companies people can trust these days. The platform specializes in cloud mining, hash rental services, and multipool mining. It is refreshing to see legitimate companies pop up now and the in the landscape filled with Ponzi Schemes. Now is a good time to look at what Nicehash offers to its customers and why they are so successful.

Most cryptocurrency cloud mining scams ask users to make a Bitcoin investment, so they can earn a passive income. Unfortunately, a lot of those are Ponzi schemes. However, Nicehash is doing things in a professional manner and without putting users at risk of losing any funds. In fact, they are one of a handful of legitimate companies in the world of cryptocurrency cloud mining.

Nicehash first came to the market in April of 2014 and has quickly grown to be one of the most reliable online mining hashrate marketplaces in the world. The company specializes in added-value services for miners, traders, and investors alike. Providing customer support services helped Nicehash achieve success. So far, the team is doing an outstanding job in this regard, as they have no negative reviews.

What makes NiceHash so unique is how they let users buy and sell hashing power on demand. Contracts can run for as little as one hour, and the maximum duration can be agreed upon by the buyer and seller. The platforms marketplace is filled with available orders, which can be filtered based on mining algorithm, and geographical locations. Reducing latency between the miner and the mining pool is of the utmost importance to maximize potential earnings.

It is worth mentioning Nicehash is not the only company providing a cryptocurrency mining hashrate marketplace. Mining Rig Rentals is one of their main competitors in this space, as they provide a powerful service as well. It is good to see competing peer-to-peer mining hashpower rental marketplaces. Competitionallows for far more flexibility than one would get through traditional cloud mining.

Nicehash also provides users with their own mining software clients, which is a nice addition. Plus, their own multipool servers allow miners to point their eligible hardware to the pool and earn mining revenue in the process. Nicehash supports a few dozen mining algorithms, including X11, Scrypt, Keccak, Decred, Cryptonight, and Pascal. Pointing aminer at this pool allows users to earn revenue without having to worry about anything, as earnings are calculated and paid out automatically.

The main question is whether or not miners should sell their hashpower or point it to the multipool. It heavily depends on how much risk one is willing to take. Using the multipool means investing in the mined coins, which can be a financial risk. One could always rent out the hashpower and keep mining the multipool as long as the contract is not picked up by a buyer. That way, users can get the best of both worlds.

South Korea Will Introduce Legislation To Legalize Cryptocurrencies – ETHNews

News world

The South Korean government is expected to consider legislation that is intended to increase consumer trust in cryptocurrencies.

South Korean lawmakers will be presenting several bills that will affect the legal status of cryptocurrencies. According to the Korea Herald, Rep. Park Yong-jin of the Democratic Party stated on July 3, 2017 that he will introduce three revisions in July that will build a set of regulatory frameworks for digital currencies. According to Park, the legislation is intended to fill the void of a state-led protection that guarantees digital currencys value, and eradicate the possibility of wreaking havoc on national economy from digital currency bubble burst.

One bill aims to revise the Electronic Financial Transactions Act. If approved, the bill will require traders, brokers, and other businesses involved in cryptocurrency transactions to get regulatory approval from the Financial Services Commission, maintain data processing facilities, and have at least 500 million won ($436,300) in capital.

Tax laws will also be revised to allow Korean financial authorities to pursue tax evaders who do not pay income or corporate tax from digital currency transactions. According to Park and the Financial Supervisory Service, although virtual currency exchanges hold a large amount of market power in the countrys cryptocurrency space, there is no legal ground for their business.

The move for more robust regulation comes after a mishap with South Korean exchange Yapizon, when it fell victim to a massive bitcoin heist in April. In the incident, a hacker swiped four hot wallets and made off with 3831 bitcoin, which at the time totaled to about $5 million. To resolve the problem, Yapizon implemented a clever accounting scheme in which it essentially provided users with IOUs. At the time of the occurrence, the South Korean government authorities lacked regulation to handle such calamities. Parks proposals lookto fill this void and increase trust in one of South Koreas emerging markets.

Cryptocurrency investments have also been on the rise in East Asian markets. To promote growth and innovation in FinTech companies operating in foreign exchange markets, the South Korean Ministry of Strategy and Finance in May decided to revamp capital requirements, which will go into effect July 18.

FBI Says Hackers Managed to Extort $28 Million in Cryptocurrencies – The Merkle

On June 22, the FBI presented their annualInternet Crime Report, this one for 2016. By using the reports from the Internet Crime Complaint Center, they are able topublish the yearly document outlining trends and instances of Internet crimes. Still, these reports maynot be enough if they want to view the wholesituation since it is suspected that only 15% of victims actually report their situation.

Multiple hot topics fromthe last year were highlighted, including the massive BEC loss. BEC (Business Email Compromise) was an incident that ended with the loss of over $360 million. Currently, this is the largest known attackfrom last yearwith countlessvictims. BEC turned out to be a very sophisticated scam, and it only targeted foreign and international companies.

Another major point in the report is ransomware, which is growing more and more popular as an attack form. Ransomware works by locking the infected devices and holding documents for ransom. The criminals are able to use it to send messages to their victims, and those mostly include a ransom demand. More often than not, they would put a bitcoin price and a link to the bitcoin wallet. Over $2.4 million was lost to ransomware last year, and 2,673 reports were identified.

Othermajor attacksoutlined in the reportare tech support frauds. Tech fraudscammers managed to steal $7.8 million. The scam pretty much follows the same process every time. The scammer gets on the phone with their victims by various means. They then try to convince the victim that something is wrong with their device. The criminalstry to get control of the computer and then offer their services in dealing with the problem in return for money or gift cards.

Over 17,146 individual cases of extortion were recorded as well, and the total loss here is over $15 million, all of which happened online. FBIs report mostly points out physical threats that were made via the internet. Basically, criminals demand money or something valuable, or they will cause the victim physical injuries. There were also reports of threats like releasing sensitive data, and even sextortion.

Other forms of online crimes include DDoS attacks, schemes revolving around government impersonations, hitman schemes, as well as loan schemes, and even breaches of high-profile data. Criminals mostly demand payment in Bitcoin or some other cryptocurrency. It is easier to move around, and also has more security layers which make it harder to trace.

Reportedonline crimes rose 3.7% in 2016. Apart from the US, the most infected foreign countries are Canada, India, UK, Australia, and France. When it comes to the individual states within the US, California suffered the most. It is followed by Texas and Florida which both had over 21,000 reports.

Another part of the report also included the affected age groups. According to the FBI, those above 60 had suffered the most and lost over $339 million last year. Next are those between the ages of 30 and 39, who lost around $190 million. Lastly, the younger users, mostly those around and under 20 years of age were much fewer in number. They also suffered less damage, which was only estimated to be around $6.7 million.

Goldman Sachs says bitcoin could rise another 50% – CNBC.com – CNBC

Goldman Sachs is out with a call on bitcoin, and chart analyst Sheba Jafari expects the digital currency could rise as high as $3,915.

That would be 52 percent above Monday's price of about $2,567.

"The market is in wave [four] of a sequence that started in the late-'10/early-'11 lows," Jafari wrote in a Sunday report on charts for the week ahead. We are "eventually expecting one more leg higher; a 5th wave."

"From current levels, this has a minimum target that goes out to 3,212 (if equal to the length of wave I)," Jafari said. "There's potential to extend as far as 3,915 (if 1.618 times the length of wave I). It just might take time to get there."

Bitcoin three-month performance

Source: CoinDesk

Bitcoin has traded in a range between about $2,100 and $3,000 ever since hitting a record high of $3,025.47 on June 11, according to CoinDesk.

Uncertainty about the future of bitcoin itself has kept prices in check lately. Updates to the bitcoin network scheduled for release in the next several weeks could split the digital currency in two if developers don't agree on how to make the updates compatible with each other.

To be sure, Jafari said, "fourth waves tend to be messy/complex," meaning bitcoin could continue trading in a range and potentially fall close to $1,857 before recovering.

On June 12, Jafari said in a note written "due to popular demand" that she was "wary of a near-term top ahead of $3,134." She said traders should "consider re-establishing bullish exposure between $2,330 and no lower than $1,915."

After topping $3,000 for the first time on June 11, bitcoin prices fell more than $800 to a low of $2,185.96 less than a week later. However, bitcoin recovered to end the month at $2,499.98, up 7.2 percent for June and having risen 158 percent for the year so far.

The Goldman reports illustrate how mainstream Wall Street is paying much closer attention to bitcoin, despite high volatility and lack of regulation in the digital currency world. This week, bitcoin and the blockchain technology behind it made the cover of a well-respected investing magazine, Barron's.

NASA FDL developing new approaches to asteroid, comet and solar threats using AI – Phys.Org

July 3, 2017

What do astrophysicist Steven Hawking, Queen guitarist Brian May and the country of Luxembourg have in common? They're all key figures in Asteroid Day - a UN sanctioned day of education to raise awareness about protecting our planet from dangerous impacts from space.

Asteroid Day is June 30th, the anniversary of the 1908 Tunguska impact, when a space rock, approximately 120 ft wide detonated in the sky, the largest impact in recent history. Asteroids and comets remain a threat to Earth.

To assist in NASA's efforts to tackle the challenge of understanding space hazards and knowing what to do about them, the Frontier Development Lab (FDL) has brought together a team of expert researchers and invited them to apply artificial intelligence to develop techniques to help protect our planet from space threats such as asteroids, comets and solar storms.

FDL is an applied artificial intelligence research accelerator and public / private partnership between NASA Ames Research Center and the SETI Institute. The program tackles knowledge gaps in space science by pairing machine learning and deep learning expertise with planetary scientists and heliophysicists at the PhD level. Interdisciplinary teams address tightly defined problems and through rapid iteration and prototyping create outputs with meaningful application to the space program.

FDL features partnerships with Luxembourg Space Resources and technology leaders in artificial intelligence from the private sector and academia including IBM, Nvidia, Lockheed Martin, USC Mascale, Kx Systems, Miso Technologies and Intel. Partners bring advanced GPU hardware, software and cloud-based resources, and provide coaching and support on cutting edge approaches.

Entering its second year, FDL strives to create research outcomes that support NASA goals, while simultaneously showcasing cutting-edge partner capabilities in deep learning and other artificial intelligence techniques.

"Grand challenges like planetary defense require ingenious new approaches. We wanted to create a platform that industrializes breakthrough work useful to the space program and the task of protecting our planet" says FDL Director, James Parr.

To this end, exemplary PhD researchers from around the world are gathered at FDL to tackle planetary defense and space weather challenges such as (1) using machine vision and deep learning to locate and model the orbits of long-period comets (2) automate the translation of 2D sparse radar images of asteroids into accurate 3D models to help determine shape and spin (3) use massive data mining techniques to look for new, yet unidentified space weather relationships between our star and Earth (4) use machine intelligence to detect early warning indicators of detrimental solar storms. The FDL team is also (5) apply machine vision and other data fusion techniques to look for landing sites on the Moon for obtaining lunar water.

What is psoriasis, what are guttate and pustular psoriasis, is there a cure, what causes it and which celebrities … – The Sun

The skin condition psoriasis affects thousands of men and women across the UK

THE skin condition psoriasis affects thousands of men and women across the UK, with many sufferers believing there is an enormous amount of stigma around the disorder.

Kim Kardashian has revealed she has finally learned to live with the condition which she described as her biggest flaw while model Cara Delevigne is also a sufferer.

Caters News Agency

The condition causes red and crusty patches with silvery scales to flare-up on the skin.

They normally appear on the elbows, knees, scalp, and lower back, but can crop up anywhere on the body.

The patches can sometimes be itchy or sore.

Roughly two per cent of the population are affected by psoriasis and and the number is roughly split equally between men and women.

Its severity varies from person to person and for some people it is merely a small irritation.

In more serious cases it can have a crushing impact on a sufferers life.

E!

Psoriasis isnt fully understood by health professionals but it is thought to be caused by a problem with the immune system.

People with the condition have increased production of skin cells.

Normally skin cells are replaced over a three to four week period.

When someone has psoriasis this process only lasts six or seven days and thats what causes the red patches to emerge.

In people with psoriasis the immune system accidentally attacks healthy skin cells by mistake.

The disorder is thought to run in the family but the precise role genetic plays is unclear.

Many peoples symptoms are triggered meaning the rash will occur when they injure the skin, get a throat infection, or use certain medicines.

Guttate and pustular are two different types of the skin condition psoriasis.

Pustular psoriasis is a rare type of the disease, which causes pustules and pus-filled blisters to form on the skin.

It also makes the skin around the blisters turn red although the pus is not infected and the person is not contagious.

Outbreaks can flare up any time and cases of the condition can include certain medicines, infections and even pregnancy.

Treatment includes using topical creams, light therapy and a combination of therapies.

Meanwhile guttate psoriasis causes pink rashes to form across the chest, arms, legs and scalp.

It is usually caused by an infection and while outbreaks can be a one-off they can also go away and come back.

Infections that cause the condition include tonsillitis and pharyngitis as well as viral infections such as chikenpox and rubella.

The rashes usually go away by themselves, but if not steroid creams and anitibiotics can be prescribed.

A GP can usually spot it simply by its appearance on the skin, but sometimes they will take a small sample to be examined under a microscope.

This will rule out other skin disorders.

Psoriasis has no cure but treatments can reduce the itchiness and the appearance of skin patches.

Topical treatments, meaning creams and ointments, can be rubbed into the skin.

If these arent effective that phototherapy can be used to treat it.

SWNS:South West News Service

This involves the skin being exposed to ultraviolet light.

In truly severe cases oral or injected medicines are available that work throughout the whole body.

One of the more high-profile psoriasis sufferers is Kim Kardashian, who in the past has been seen with big red patches on her arms.

The mum of two, inherited the condition from her mum Kris Jenner and was first diagnosed back in 2010.

Kim told her website: Everyone with psoriasis has different symptoms; sometimes the rashes are itchy, sometimes theyre flaky. Mine flares up from time to time for different reasons.

Model Cara Develvingne also suffers from the skin condition, which is brought on by stress.

Her punishing schedule led her to develop psoriasis which had to be laboriously covered up in thick make-up.

People would put on gloves and not want to touch me because they thought it was, like, leprosy or something, said the 24-year-old.

World Travel & Tourism Council’s David Scowsill – Travel Weekly

Last week, David Scowsill hung up his hat after six years as the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) CEO. He spoke to Travel Weekly news editor Johanna Jainchill about his tenure, why the travel and tourism sector is so strong and how artificial intelligence will enhance the travel industry. Q: What were some of the WTTC's greatest achievements under your leadership?

A: The key thing is we brought all of the different areas of the sector together. We created the Global Travel Association Coalition with [the United Nations World Travel Organization], IATA, CLIA [and other travel groups], which makes sure all the global industry organizations are talking with one voice and the same set of data to make sure governments understand how important this industry is. We've consolidated the voices, the research and the sound bites. In the last five years we've seen 85 presidents and prime ministers. By educating the heads of state, when they have their own cabinet meetings they are talking from a position of knowledge. That is really important in making sure travel and tourism is taken with the importance it deserves given that we generate 10% of the GDP [gross domestic product] and 10% of the jobs on the planet.

Q: There is concern that our new president isn't as travel-industry focused as his predecessor, based on early policies like the travel ban and the proposal to defund Brand USA. How can the industry convince the Trump administration of travel's importance?

A: It took the Obama administration about two years to start thinking about this industry and a lot of work by [the U.S. Travel Association] before implementing so many pro-travel policies: faster visa processing in Brazil and China, the launch of Brand USA. What triggered that? A realization that the U.S. had lost $600 billion during the 10 years post-9/11 from lost market share. Once they realized what the U.S. had forgone, the economic argument was clear.

We are fortunate that [Donald] Trump comes from our industry and given his private interest in golf, hotels and leisure around the world, he absolutely does understand the power of this industry to create jobs and American jobs. Clearly with the travel ban attempts and what's been happening with Cuba, some things are potentially negative for our industry going forward. With any government, we have to start the process all over again.

Q: What trends do you see shaping the future of travel?

A: 2017 is very different from 2010, when I took the helm of the WTTC, with major geopolitical movements, from the Arab Spring to the rise in populism; the rising number and changing nature of terrorist attacks, particularly in Western countries; the growing economic power of China and India; the rise of the sharing economy; the move to mobile; and the awareness and almost complete acceptance of the urgency to address climate change.

Artificial intelligence, machine learning and robotics will certainly impact jobs in travel over time. Many [jobs] will become redundant, but others will be created. Service delivery in travel and tourism relies on people; it is the people [who] ultimately define the experience. Virtual reality will enhance the industry rather than compete with it. The opportunities? -- be it children learning in a classroom, training tourism workers to spot potential terrorists, learning to repair jet engines or a terminally ill person visiting the world from their bed? -- are huge.

Q: You've said despite many challenges, the travel industry is strong.

A: Yes, there are lots of reasons why. We'll grow 3% to 4% every year despite the increasing number of terror attacks, the natural disasters, the political changes and the occasional outbreak like Zika and Ebola. All of those will continue. And the executives of every company have to budget for that level of uncertainty. Something will hit them. But overall, the prospects for the industry are very good. It's driven by a movement toward Asia, more people coming to the middle class, particularly in Asia, Latin America and Africa. The fundamentals of people still wanting to travel for leisure purposes are there. For the last six years our industry has grown 1% faster than the GDP, and I anticipate that happening for the next five years.

Green vacations: 10 sustainable places that don’t cost the Earth – CNN

(CNN) Travelers are more socially and environmentally conscious than ever, seeking to get away safe in the knowledge they've had minimal impact on the planet's resources.

With 2017 named as the United Nations' International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development, the spotlight is even more on the tourism and hospitality industry. While a lot of destinations claim to be doing their part to minimize their footprint, there are some who've striven to take sustainability to new levels.

Here are 10 of the best global destinations and experiences where vacations don't cost the Earth:

Kunfunadhoo was a deserted island in the Indian Ocean idyll of the Maldives until Eva and Sonu Shivdasani built their first resort there, in the process pioneering the trend for environmentally responsible ultra-luxury holidays. If that sounds like a contradiction in terms, the castaway property has proven the doubters wrong and has been fully carbon neutral since 2014.

They recycle 90% of their waste, including 100% of food waste that's used in their organic gardens, in turn reducing the cost of transporting food. Construction includes building blocks made from Styrofoam packaging, while all glass goes to their on-site studio where it's turned into works of art. The solar-based system provides all daytime electricity needs and 100% of water used is desalinated.

Soneva -- which today has a property in Thailand and a second in the Maldives -- also led the way in implementing a mandatory 2% carbon levy on rooms to support their Soneva Foundation which works in developing regions on reforestation and renewable energy projects.

Bom Bom Resort on Prncipe Island features 19 beach bungalows surrounded by tropical forest.

Few destinations are as unvisited and untouched as Principe, the smaller of two main islands in the tiny country of Sao Tome and Principe, lying in the Gulf of Guinea off the west coast of Africa.

Only 5,000 people live there, and Bom Bom Resort comprises just 19 bungalows on the beach, surrounded by tropical forest.

World-class scuba diving and hiking in UNESCO Biosphere reserves, visiting cocoa plantations and fishing villages are on the agenda, while Africa's smallest city, San Antonio, is also there to discover. For many, it's also the draw of wildlife, from whales to nesting turtles, monkeys and especially birds found nowhere else on Earth.

It's perhaps unsurprising that one of the world's kite surfing capitals -- Cabarete in the Dominican Republic -- is also home to a genuinely ecologically sustainable small hotel. Surfing and yoga, horse riding and hiking are literally on the doorstep for those not into kite surfing.

The property is 100% solar powered and purposefully not air-conditioned, but uses intelligent ventilation to make the most of the naturally windy beach to circulate cool air.

Rainwater collection systems are used to manage water consumption and an organic farm has 2,000 trees to further offset carbon emissions, in addition to providing local, seasonal produce. The hotel also aims to empower the local community through education, training and work opportunities for local Dominicans who number more than 70% of employees.

Inkaterra Guides Field Station in Peru's Tampopata National Reserve is a former research station.

Peru's remote Tampopata National Reserve is home to the Inkaterra Guides Field Station, formerly a research location and now open to travelers and volunteers from around the world.

The rainforest retreat leads conservation projects overseen by the not-for-profit Inkaterra Asociacin (ITA) including the study of flora and fauna. Four cabanas with private terraces provide more comfortable accommodation than you may expect, while there are larger pavilions for shared living.

Wildlife-focused outings include a canopy walkway high above the forest floor, boat trips and visits to the Gamitana Model Farm, where ITA works in conjunction with local communities.

This means their Myanmar trip is fully carbon offset, to the tune of 577 kilograms per passenger.

They use local transportation and accommodation, including a stay at the country's first community-based tourism project in Myaing where local villagers provide meals and activities, in a project run by ActionAid.

Bushmans Kloof is a sustainable reserve in South Africa's Cederberg Mountains.

Bushmans Kloof Wilderness Reserve is an 18,000-acre wildlife reserve lodge 170 miles from Cape Town in the Cederberg Mountains. Conservation and working with communities are common threads among lodges across Africa, but they take it up a notch at Bushmans Kloof.

There's waste water processing, sustainable organic farming and energy-saving initiatives, but it's through protection and reintegration of endangered species that they've made their mark. Notably, the reserve is home to the Cape Mountain zebra, saved from the brink of extinction, while there are more than 130 rock-art sites, which are more than 10,000 years old.

Extensive community participation includes supporting schools, clinics, youth camps and even the refurbishment of a museum.

The northern coast of the Mediterranean island of Cyprus is largely unspoilt, with Alagadi Beach a particular draw for a special type of visitor -- endangered green and loggerhead turtles.

It's estimated that as few as 400 green and 2,000 loggerhead females breed in the entire Mediterranean, so conservation work by the Marine Turtle Research Group, led by Britain's Exeter University, is critical.

Volunteers are welcome, primarily students from undergraduate to PhD level, but non-students are also accepted. It's a long-term commitment -- up to three months -- and all volunteers need to contribute to cover food and accommodation. Given issues including habitat loss and climate change, the odds against young turtles making it to adulthood are as low as one in 1,000.

Costa Rica is blessed with some of the most biodiverse ecosystems on earth.

Costa Rica's Osa Peninsula boasts an extraordinary claim as the "most biologically intense" place on the planet. That translates as 2.5% of the world's biodiversity in an area half the size of Rhode Island.

Elsewhere, you can enjoy sunset horseback rides on remote beaches or canoeing in a private lagoon surrounded by 1,000 protected acres of pristine forest.

Far off the tourist trail in Oleiros in central Portugal is Yoga Holidays Portugal's eco-yoga retreat where tuition and meditation go hand in hand with nature and simple living.

Accommodation is in Mongolian-style yurts that are distinctly "off-grid," with solar reading lamps and hot water available as needed, and toilets of the eco-composting variety. Furniture is made from their own pine, olive and chestnut wood, while vegetable gardens and olive groves provide the majority of food. The nearby Zezere River provides crystal-clear waters for swimming.

The Emerald eco development in Cornwall in the southwest of England provides the UK's only zero carbon tourist accommodation. In practice this means that they generate their own electricity, produce their own water, utilize recycled materials and recycle waste. They have also planted hundreds of native trees, reducing their energy consumption by over 90%.

Four high-spec houses clad in cedar offer amenities including private hot tubs, while there's an indoor heated swimming pool, gym and play area. Five acres of woodland paths allow for exploration.

Travel Agents Report Strong Europe Sales’No Matter What’ – Travel Market Report

The big shift this summer, according to several agents, is the Eastern Mediterraneanboth Greece and Turkey are standouts this summer.

Europe will always be a major summer destination, travel agents say, no matter what geopolitical situations arise.

Despite acts of terrorism in Paris and London in the past year, travel agents continue to see sales rise and their client bases expand, agents told Travel Market Report.

No matter what happens they go," said Jack Bloch of New York-based JBs World of Travel. Business people do not change their plans, and Paris and London remain popular for theater and fashion crowds. Sophisticated travelers do not get deterred, Bloch said.

Bloch added that he does see clients booking later, especially those who have the means to wait until the last minute. We had eight clients who traveled right after the most recent incident in London and none voiced any concern. Sometimes the best time to go is right after an incident when security is intense, Bloch added.

Paris reboundsAnn Scully of McCabe World Travel said: Europe is huge for us, and I have been working on it every single day. Paris has totally rebounded, and clients are headed far beyond the big three cities. The agency also has seen a 15% rise in new clients, she said.

Scully did have one cancellation for London, and she expects that city to take a bit longer to rebound, but she has faith in the rest of the Europe. Croatia, Slovenia, Scotland, Iceland and Puglia, Italy, are selling off the charts, she said, and you simply cannot get a room in Edinburgh during Tattoo in August.

Margot Cushing, a counselor at Frosch, said, that while the rhetoric coming out of the White House has not helped, a bullish stock market and favorable currency exchange rates are keeping her clients buoyant about travel.

Paris is the acme of the travel experience, and I have not seen a drop off in bookings to Paris or other parts of Europe, Cushing said.

Susan Farewell, owner of Farewell Travels in Westport, CT, said, her agency is booking lots of Europe: from destinations like Englands Lake District and the Scottish countryside to Corsica, Mallorca, Sicily, the Swiss Alps, Greek islands, and Scandinavian countries. Iceland bookings are especially strong this year, she said.

I see some trends among our clients that seem to be reactions to the chaos you find around the world, such as [more] itineraries to the countryside and islands, where clients can seek out wilderness therapy and opportunities to disconnect, Farewell added.

Some agents see dipsNot all clients are steeled for traveling to a destination after a storm, political or otherwise, and some agents have noticed dips in sales.

Bookings have definitely slumped. By this time of year [usually] I would be busy booking only Europe, and we haven't seen that at all this year, said Duff Pacifico, CTC, of Tzell Travel Group.

Camille Pepe Sperrazza, principal of The World Awaits Travel, said she had seen a decline in sales for Europe due to violence and to the Caribbean due to Zika, but sales for European cruises are up for fall sailings.

She added that those who didn't travel last year for whatever reason, are looking forward to getting away this year.

What to do in the face of a downturn?

We are offering alternativesto Greece, Russia, Norway, Portugal and Iceland this summer, Pacifico said. Also, we can suggest spending less time in the big cities and traveling outside the citiesto the south of France, Amalfi Coast, Cinque Terre, Scotland, Ireland.

Interest in Greece is upThe big shift this summer, according to several agents, is the Eastern Mediterraneanboth Greece and Turkey are standouts this summer, they said.

Greece is the big shift this summer, Bloch said. He had just returned from a trip to Greece and found new luxury boutique hotels on several islands, including Mykonos, Santorini and Crete. However, he added, hotel inventory is tight in Greece, so clients who like to book close in may have an issue.

Bloch noted other shifts in European travel too. I see a move toward southern destinations like Sardinia and Sicily.

Extending their trips Some clients are taking longer trips.

Scully of McCabe World Travel said many clients are taking seven-day cruises and then adding on. Clients are adding Puglia or the Amalfi Coast or Lake Como to build their trips into a two-week vacation.

All the agents who spoke with Travel Market Report said they pass along safety advice to clients headed for Europe: Blend in when you can, use common sense and pay attention to your surroundings.

Social conditioning forced these aspiring young ones with million dollar dreams to repress their emotions and pretend that all was well. Even parents usually turned a blind eye to obvious symptoms that indicated help was required. Unfortunately, the intensity of their internal strife is now becoming evident through the increasing incidence of suicide rates, depression, passive aggressive behaviours, bipolar disorders and other range of mental afflictions.

Even those who appear to be dealing with the accelerated price of success rely heavily on medication for digestive disorders, insomnia, hypertension, and routinely pop over the counter drugs to stay on top of their jobs. Its almost as though some invisible God of corporate abundance has issued an ordinance to these young ones that they must be rock stars not only at their jobs but also in their social and personal spheres. Unfortunately, this breed of self-reliant, hardworking and driven youngsters buy into this misnomer quite innocently, ticking off all the boxes on the pretence of happiness but completely losing sight of their inner storm because they have no bandwidth or direction. They work and party hard, drowning their woes in the cacophony of loud music and sangrias at pubs or consuming caffeine at coffee bars. All this looks great on the outside but on the inside, this can be really painful. The 7 Karma Codes has been designed to be the clarity companion and guide to these millennials so that they can learn to decompress their anxieties, and they no longer have to suffer alone.

Rocket failure may delay China’s space station and moon missions – New Scientist

Countdown to failure

Xinhua News Agency/REX/Shutterstock

By Timothy Revell

Chinas latest space launch has ended in failure. The Long March 5 rocketsuccessfully took off at 11.23am GMT on Sunday from the Wenchang Space Launch Centre in China, but after an hour came tumbling back down to Earth due to an abnormality.

Once in the air, mission control in Beijing tried to save the rocket by changing its flight plans, but those attempts were unsuccessful. The rocket, along with the experimental communications satellite it was carrying, crashed into the Pacific Ocean shortly afterwards.

The cause of the failure is still being investigated, but is likely to cause delays for future launch plans. This is the second Long March failure in two weeks, with a television satellite failing to hitch a ride into space on June 19. At the moment, its not clear if there is a connection between the two incidents.

China had planned to launch a rover into space by the end of this year, destined for the dark side of the moon, with the hope of bringing rock and soil samples back to Earth. But the mission relies on hitching a ride aboard a Long March 5 rocket, so may be delayed if the causes of the latest failures take a while to find and rectify.

Delays are possible. The rocket cannot fly until we find out the problem and solve it, and that will take time, said Wang Jianyu, the commander in chief of Chinas quantum satellite project who is also involved in the moon missions.

China also has plans to complete the construction of a space station, as well as landing humans and building a settlement on the moon. These missions will rely on Long March 5 rockets, so finding the points of failure is crucial to avoid lengthy delays.

SpaceXs Dragon spaceship, carrying more than 4,100 pounds of cargo and research specimens, descended to a predawn splashdown Monday in the Pacific Ocean southwest of Los Angeles, completing the first re-flight of one of SpaceXs unpiloted supply ships to the International Space Station.

Completing a four-week stay at the space station, the Dragon cargo capsule departed the research outpost Monday at 2:41 a.m. EDT (0641 GMT), when astronaut Jack Fischer commanded the stations robotic arm to release the spacecraft.

Launched June 3 from NASAs Kennedy Space Center aboard a Falcon 9 rocket, the automated logistics carrier delivered nearly 6,000 pounds of equipment and research hardware to the space station.

The capsule made its second trip to the orbiting complex. SpaceX refurbished the craft following its first mission in September and October 2014.

Dragons been an incredible spacecraft, Fischer radioed mission control a few minutes after Dragon left the space station. I could even say it was slathered in awesome sauce. This baby had almost no problems, which is an incredible feat considering its the first reuse of a Dragon vehicle.

Items stowed for Dragons return included live mice from an experiment to investigate the effectiveness of a therapeutic drug to promote bone growth, combating atrophy in astronauts in space and osteoporosis patients on Earth. The mice will be euthanized and examined after landing.

Most of the 6,000 pounds of cargo carried was science, and almost all the return cargo are precious samples for discoveries we cant wait to see, Fischer said. In addition, Dragon brought up a host of external experiments. Weve added an external platform for science, a neutron star analyzer and a new solar array that rolled out like a party horn on New Years Eve.

Dragons homecoming was pushed back a day because of rough seas in the splashdown zone around 260 miles (420 kilometers) southwest of Long Beach, California.

Under the control of SpaceX engineers in Hawthorne, California, the Dragon capsule fired its thrusters in three pulses to fly a safe distance away from the space station. A few hours later, the supply freighter braked out of orbit with another rocket firing, jettisoned its disposable unpressurized trunk and service module, then plunged into Earths atmosphere for a searing re-entry.

Soaring southwest to northeast, the capsule deployed two drogue parachutes and three main chutes before splashing down, SpaceX tweeted at 8:14 a.m. EDT (1214 GMT; 5:14 a.m. PDT).

The return marked the first time a Dragon capsule has splashed down at night. Fischer captured a view of the plasma trail behind the Dragon spacecraft during re-entry as the space station sailed overhead.

A SpaceX recovery team hoisted the craft onto a boat for a two-day trip to the Port of Los Angeles, where time-sensitive cargo and scientific samples will be handed over to NASA and research teams.

SpaceX replaced the heat shield and other parts of the capsule after its 2014 flight, but officials said the primary structure, propulsion system and sections were original articles.

Mondays splashdown concluded SpaceXs 11th resupply mission to the space station. Including flights already accomplished, SpaceX has contracts with NASA for at least 26 cargo flights to the orbital research lab through 2024.

The companys 12th cargo mission is set for launch Aug. 10 from the Kennedy Space Center.

SpaceX scrubs Sunday launch attempt with Intelsat relay satellite – Spaceflight Now

A computer-triggered abort halted the countdown of a Falcon 9 rocket Sunday at NASAs Kennedy Space Center in Florida, pushing back the next mission in SpaceXs launch surge until at least Monday.

The 229-foot-tall Falcon 9 rocket was counting down to liftoff with an Intelsat communications satellite at 7:36 p.m. EDT (2336 GMT) Monday, and an iffy afternoon weather forecast gave way to clear skies as clocks ticked toward launch.

An automatic sequencer sent commands to load the two-stage rocket with super-chilled RP-1 kerosene and liquid oxygen propellants, and the Falcon 9s engines were prepared for ignition and its fuel tanks pressurized for launch during the final minutes of Sundays countdown.

But clocks stopped at T-minus 9 seconds after a computer overseeing preset criteria in the rockets guidance, navigation and control system ordered an automatic abort. SpaceXs launch director scrubbed Sundays launch attempt a few minutes later as engineers investigated the problem.

We had a vehicle abort criteria violated at T-minus 10 seconds, a GNC (guidance, navigation and control) criteria, the launch director said. Were still looking into what that is at this time.

Were not going to be able to get a recycle in today without going past the end of the window, so were officially scrubbed, he said. Go ahead and put a 24-hour recycle into work.

SpaceX began draining the Falcon 9s propellant tanks at launch pad 39A soon after the scrub.

If SpaceXs launch team can understand the problem, and correct it if necessary, the Falcon 9 rocket could be fueled again Monday for a 58-minute launch window that opens at 7:37 p.m. EDT (2337 GMT).

The launch of the Intelsat 35e communications satellite is the third in a series of Falcon 9 flights over the last two weeks. If the rocket blasted off Sunday, it would have been the third Falcon 9 launch in a little over nine days, and the second from the same launch pad in Florida.

The feverish pace of activity at SpaceXs Cape Canaveral facilities seeks to break the record for the fastest turnaround between launches at pad 39A. SpaceX and Intelsat are eager to get the rocket off the ground before the U.S. Air Forces Eastern Range becomes unavailable to support the launch after the July 4 holiday.

The Falcon 9 rocket assigned to Intelsat 35es mission conducted a static fire test Thursday evening at pad 39A, less than 72 hours before the opening of Sundays launch window. Ground crews rolled back the Falcon 9 to its hangar Friday afternoon and attached the Intelsat 35e satellite to the rocket in time to return to the pad in the predawn hours Sunday.

We had to add additional resources to try to turn around the campaigns in such a short time, said Ken Lee, Intelsats senior vice president of space systems, in an interview Sunday at Cape Canaveral. More manpower a lot of pressure but as usual our team is mission-oriented, so when they see a target theyre going to do the best they can do meet that date.

Theyve been working almost around-the-clock, and we brought in additional engineers to make sure that we did the work that we needed to do without any shortcuts.

The 14,905-pound (6,761-kilogram) Intelsat 35e communications satellite, built by Boeing, is the heaviest spacecraft ever launched by SpaceX toward a perch in geostationary orbit, a circular loop more than 22,000 miles (nearly 36,000 kilometers) above Earths equator commonly used by broadcast and data relay stations.

At that altitude, orbital mechanics require a satellite to fly around Earth at the same speed it rotates, allowing a spacecraft to hover over a fixed geographic location, an ideal situation for communications applications.

The heavy weight of Intelsat 35e effectively maxes out the Falcon 9s capability to lift a payload going to that type of orbit, Lee said.

SpaceX has budgeted all of the Falcon 9s kerosene and liquid oxygen propellant to send Intelsat 35e into as high of an orbit as possible. That means the first stage will not return to land on a barge at sea, and the upper stages single Merlin engine is programmed to fire as long as it can, instead of aiming for a specific predetermined altitude.

The mission is designed to leave as little leftover propellant as possible in the second stage, called a minimum residual shutdown.

There is a minimum orbital target that we are shooting for, and if there is excess fuel on the rocket, then were going to continue to burn until we deplete all the fuel, Lee said.

Lee said there is a range of possible orbits the Falcon 9 could deploy Intelsat 35e into, but the minimum expected peak altitude, or apogee, when the satellite separates from the upper stage is 19,405 miles (31,230 kilometers), according to Lee.

The low point, or perigee, of the transfer orbit is expected to be around 155 miles (250 kilometers), and Intelsat 35es path around Earth will be tilted 26 degrees to the equator.

If the launcher releases the Intelsat 35e satellite in that orbit, the spacecraft will still have enough on-board propellant for its planned 15-year operational life. Intelsat and Boeing agreed to load more fuel into the spacecraft to make up for the possible altitude shortfall.

Everything else will be gravy in terms of the service life, Lee said, referring to the benefit of going into a higher initial orbit.

When it blasts off, the Falcon 9 could deliver extra performance for Intelsat 35e, and the possible range of the satellites initial apogee altitude runs above 22,000 miles, a regime called supersynchronous transfer orbit, Lee said.

The higher the orbit, the better for the satellite in terms of mission lifetime because Intelsat 35e will have to burn less of its own fuel to maneuver into its final position.

The range we are hoping for tonight, we have a minimum number, and we have a maximum number, which would be a slightly supersynchronous (transfer) orbit, Lee said.

We are maxing out (the Falcon 9) and beyond because we are doing the MRS (Minimum Residual Shutdown) mission, and we are not recovering this rocket.

Intelsat 35es own engine will fire multiple times in weeks after launch to circularize the satellites orbit a geostationary altitude. Lee said the spacecraft should ever service in the second half of August, beaming signals across the Americas, the Caribbean, Latin America, Europe and Africa for wireless network providers and television broadcasters.

Red Bull heads to Austria bidding to improve home race form – Yahoo Sports

Red Bull Formula 1 drivers Daniel Ricciardo and Max Verstappen will head to next weekends Austrian Grand Prix bidding to improve their teams home race form, having scored just one podium over the past three years in Spielberg.

Austria returned to the F1 calendar in 2014 after an 11-year absence, but the past three races at the Red Bull Ring have been difficult ones for the home team.

Max Verstappen finished second last year after the late clash between Mercedes drivers Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton, outstripping Red Bulls previous best finish of eighth in Austria from 2014.

After claiming its first victory of the season last time out in Baku, Red Bull now returns home with its sights set on impressing at one of its most important races of the year.

I had a really good result in Austria last year coming second, Verstappen said. Before the race it was a bit unknown how the tires would play out so I just tried to feel my way in and keep life in them.

This allowed me to complete a one-stop strategy, which was always going to be a gamble, but in the end worked out really well.

This year we have to make sure the car is working well in the corners in order to be up with the front-runners and then just try and be as competitive as possible on the straights, its always a bit of a compromise.

The fans at the Red Bull Ring are always extremely passionate and of course there was a big Dutch turn out last year which is always special for me to see, plenty of caravans and orange around the area.

At any kind of power circuit like Austria you want to be smooth and get good exits in order to give yourself the best chance on the long straights, added Baku winner Ricciardo.

The compromise is always the aero package. In the middle to the end of the lap you want more downforce because the corners are quite fast but more downforce means you are slower on the straights, so the key is to find a good balance throughout the lap.

I really enjoy the track and the only downside is that I wish it was a bit longer. I wish it had a few more corners, but the corners that do exist are great fun.

Back in May, Ricciardo and Verstappen completed a fun caravan race at the Red Bull Ring in promotion of the race, causing havoc in the process.

We have done some pretty crazy things at the track, wearing the lederhosen race suit is something different and a few weeks ago Max and I raced caravans there, Ricciardo said.

To be honest Im not sure they would have let us do that anywhere else as the caravans were destroyed, but we loved it!
