Flood of 2016 exposed lingering damage to Ascension bridges; repairs continue – The Advocate

LAKE Louis Normand and John Paul Taylor used shovels to dig into the muck around bridge piles underneath Summerfield Road as traffic passed overhead in northeastern Ascension Parish.

The contractors with Durable Piling Restoration of Marksville were recently preparing to cut out and replace parts of the timber piles and do other foundation work to the two bridges that are the only way through a lowland forest and into the Summerfield subdivision along the Amite River.

The repair job, which is now nearing completion, involved two of the 19 bridges that Ascension Parish government has repaired or replaced since Parish President Kenny Matassa took office in January 2016, a parish government spokesman said.

The state Department of Transportation and Development has been busy with its own bridge repairs in the parish as well, and wrapped up emergency repairs to a bridge on La. 933 in the St. Amant area Thursday, a department spokesman said.

Ascension has 136 bridges on parish roads and another 132 bridges on state highways, and it seems every few weeks parish or state officials are announcing partial or complete bridge closures sometimes of the emergency variety, as was the work on the Summerfield Road and La. 933 bridges.

But parish and state officials said the 2016 flood in the Amite River Basin, which inundated large swaths of East Ascension Parish, did not directly damage bridges in the parish. Some officials, however, think the high water may have indirectly helped bring about the recent round of repairs.

Bill Roux, parish public works director, said last year's floodwater washed out parts of the earthen bases around some bridges and revealed rot among many of the parish's timber bridges that inspectors spotted later.

"It exposed a condition that we couldn't see before because it was all covered, and that is what the DOTD is seeing now in inspection. They said, 'Oh, wait, this is bad,'" Roux said.

Rodney Mallett, DOTD spokesman, said though the agency does its biennial inspections in odd-numbered years, the agency has issued six letters to the parish since the start of 2016 for bridgeson parish roads that needed repair. In addition to those six bridges, a seventh parish bridge was closed but has been repaired and reopened, according to a DOTD tally from early June.

More recently, DOTD also closed the La. 933bridge about one-tenth of a mile west of Joe Sevario Road on June 19. A routine inspection found large empty spaces under both of the bridge's approach slabs, Mallett said. Earth should have been where the voids were found under the bridge approaches.

Kyle Gautreau, parish government spokesman, said that since the start of 2016, the parish has spent more than $830,000 on bridge work, not including the Summerfield job. While some of that work was minor, like guard rail repairs, $483,000 was spent to replace or upgrade eight bridges. The parish often replaced old timber bridges with large concrete box culverts that had new roads laid on top of them.

Four more timber bridges weren't replaced with culverts but had supporting wooden piles replaced at a cost of an additional $312,000, Gautreau said. Once finished, the Summerfield bridges will bring that number to six, though total cost figures weren't immediately available.

Peter DeCuir, vice president and chief operating officer of Durable Piling, said DOTD and local governments often choose his services because his company can work on bridges without bridge closures, as his company was able to do on Summerfield Road, maintaining the only access route to homes in the area.

On Summerfield's bridges, DeCuir's workers cut out the damaged portion of piles, nine on one bridge and 11 on another, and replaced them with a composite material using epoxy and Kevlar.

"And it's never going to rot," DeCuir said.

The Summerfield job became more involved than first planned, though, as more damage was discovered. In addition to piles, workers had to fill in voids under some of those bridges' approaches.

DeCuir said the job is nearly complete despite delays from recent heavy rains. He said Thursday that he is waiting on water levels to drop again so he can finish protecting one of the bridge's foundations with concrete.

It appears Summerfield Road won't be the end of Durable Piling's time in Ascension Parish, though. At Roux's urging in early June, the East Ascension drainage board agreed to increase funding to Durable Piling from a maximum of $275,000 to up to $400,000 for some additional emergency repairs to Summerfield Road and for expected repairs to other damaged bridges.

"We do have other bridges that (are) coming on line with some problems we're discovering," Roux told the board, "and I want to increase it to $400,000 to make sure I have enough to take care of those things."

Ascension 4-H’ers take aim at national BB Gun Championship – The Advocate

Nine 9- to 14-year-old members of the Ascension Parish 4-H Club competed this past weekend at the Daisy National BB Gun Championship Match in Rogers, Arkansas.

The sharpshooters were the first team from Ascension Parish to make it to the national level for the shooting contest.

Before leaving for the event, 12-year-old Aidan Cole, of Prairieville, said, "I'm hoping to shoot the best I can. The shooting is what I look forward to the most."

To qualify, each team must have competed in the Daisy Shooting Education Program and be sponsored by an organization with adult leadership, such as 4-H.

The team competition, held at the John Q. Hammons Convention Center, started Friday and ended Monday.

The team with the overall highest score won the competition.

The Ascension 4-H group was one of three Louisiana teams competing, according to coach Jodi Daigle. The other two teams are from St. James and Franklin parishes.

James Daigle, 14, of Gonzales said he was proud to represent Ascension and Ascension 4-H shooting sports.

Jodi Daigle said the competition consists of a written exam. Then they shoot from four different positions: prone (laying down), standing, sitting and kneeling.

The team has been preparing since winning the state regionals in April.

Teams must have had at least eight hours of practice in order to compete in the national competition.

Jodi Daigle said during practice the team learns firearm safety, fundamentals of shooting in different positions, as well as Daisy rules and curriculum.

Katie Swanson, 11, from Prairieville, said, she liked learning about the safety of the guns and how to handle them. The club provided her with a chance to make new friends.

Parent Michelle Swanson said the weekend also included a grand opening ceremony, T-shirt competition and a Barter Bar area.

The Ascension 4-H Club swapped Louisiana-related trinkets with other teams across the country.

"This has all been amazing," Michelle Swanson said. "We couldn't be prouder of them. It really gives them a lot of confidence."

"They learn to focus on the next shot," Swanson added. "They can't stop and dwell on the past shot. They are really just competing against themselves. Each time they are hoping to get better."

Jaxon Swanson, 13, of Prairieville said, "We hope it brings attention to our team so we have more kids sign up in 4-H. The championship helps promote 4-H."

Along with paying out-of-pocket, the team raised money for competition expenses through sponsorships and the 4-H Club.

At presstime on Monday morning, the club was placed 25th out of 71 teams.

Integrating disciplines ‘key to dealing with digital revolution’ | Times … – Times Higher Education (THE)

Universities must embrace crossdisciplinary education and research in order to deal with the megatrends of the fourth industrial revolution, according to the president of the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST).

Speaking at theTimesHigherEducationResearch Excellence Summit in Tacihung, Taiwan, Sung-Chul Shin said that these challenges were particularly pressing in South Korea, which he described as being at a stall point where it can either continue developing as an advanced nation or get stuck with a stagnant economy.

The fourth industrial revolution, also known as the digital revolution, is predicted to change the way we live, work and relate to each other. It represents the integration of technology between the physical, digital and biological worlds.

Professor Shin said that there are three megatrends that will drive the fourth industrial revolution: hyperconnectivity, which is the integration of the physical and digital fields; superintelligence, which will draw on artificial intelligence and computer science; and the convergence of science and technology.

Universities should play a central role in developing the fourth industrial revolution, he said.

In meeting the challenges posed by the digital revolution, universities will need to bring research across various disciplines together, in order to achieve better results than when professors work in a single specialism, Professor Shin said. Research involving the areas of artificial intelligence, brain research, data science and computer science will be key, he added.

International collaboration was also vital, he continued, pointing out that Korea only invests a fraction of its research budget in brain science research when comparedwith the US and Japan. We cannot compete so we have to collaborate, Professor Shin said.

Concerning all megatrends, university reform is urgent, he added.

Professor Shin argued that students will need an education in the humanities and social sciences in addition to strong training in basic science and engineering, in order to improve their creative talents.

Team-based learning and the flipped classroom is very important to fostering these skills in the next generation, he told the conference.

South Koreas major research and development policies for the future include expanding investment and improving the efficiency of research by streamlining the planning, management and evaluation of research projects, the conference heard. The government is also developing a series of strategic research priorities.

As the Korean government adopts the fourth industrial revolution, KAIST will play a pivotal role, Professor Shin said.Korea is near a stall point, it is either destined to solidify its place as an advanced nation or be caught in the middle-income trap with a stagnant economy.

Travel: Cape Canaveral offers strange mix of space exploration and natural beauty – The Delaware County Daily Times

Elon Musk brings new meaning to the word irrepressible.

In early March, the SpaceX founder and CEO stunned the spaceflight community by announcing the first joy ride into space. In 2018 he plans to launch one of his rockets to transport not astronauts, but two wealthy private citizens around the moon. The pair have already put down a significant deposit for the 300,000 mile trip that will take a week. This will be the first private company to take civilians beyond lower Earth orbit.

When Musk dreamed up the idea for his commercial space exploration company 15 years ago his core principle was to recycle reusable rockets, a strategy that would dramatically reduce the cost of space travel and make it more available for commercial audiences.

Musks dream turned into reality with a launch of a flight-proven rocket in late March. He did it again on June 23 with the blast off of a two-stage, 23-story tall Falcon 9 rocket from Complex 39a at NASAs Kennedy Space Center at Cape Canaveral. The booster rocket transported an 8,000 pound satellite to orbit where it will provide will provide television and data-communications services to Bulgaria, the Balkans and other parts of Europe.

About eight minutes later the first stage rocket touched down intact with fold out legs on the drone ship Of Course I Still Love You stationed 200 miles off the coast of Cape Canaveral. SpaceX now has 12 booster landings under its belt. The Falcon 9 rocket bolstered Musks mission to slash the cost of spaceflight through the use of reusable rockets and hardware. The 45-year old billionaire believes SpaceX can revolutionize travel in the solar system and take humans to establish a city on Mars.

If youre traveling to Florida this summer, consider a side trip to Cape Canaveral on the central coast. SpaceX is expected to launch five more rockets during July and August, while United Launch Alliance, a partnership between Boeing and Lockheed Martin, is due to launch another two.

Watching a rocket launch from a few miles away provides a unique perspective on the technology and power required to send spacecraft into Earths orbit. There is nothing quite like it. With more launches happening now than ever before, now is the time to witness the wondrous show.

The closest public launch viewing is from Kennedy Space Center and Cape Canaveral Air Force Station. Special launch viewing areas are made available to visitors. Get there early. Traffic can be hectic on launch days. Arrive when the gates open if youre planning to see a morning launch. Give yourself plenty of time to get to your destination and expect long lines at the gate and in parking areas. For details on purchasing tickets check http://www.kennedyspacecenter.com.

There are also prime viewing areas outside of the complex including the shores of the Indian River, the Exploration Tower, the Canaveral National Seashore, the Cocoa Beach Pier or any of the beaches south of Port Canaveral. When planning to visit a rocket launch, its important to remember that dates are rarely finalized until a few weeks to a few months before each launch. And planned launches can be scrubbed or delayed due to weather or technical issues, even down to seconds before launch. So its important to make flexible plans and prepare to stay for a few days if youre determined to catch the launch despite delays.

Check Space Flight Now (www.spaceflightnow.com/launch-schedule) for up-to-date information, and keep an eye on NASA, SpaceX and ULA Twitter feeds for additional updates. Another good resource is the local newspaper, Florida Today, (www.floridatoday.com) that streams rocket launches starting 30 minutes before the lift off.

Kennedy Space Center is home to the coolest space attractions on the planet. When you enter the gates, head over to the Rocket Garden that features eight authentic rockets from the past, including a Mercury-Atlas rocket similar to the one used to launch John Glenn into space in 1962. Dont miss the guided bus tour. You will experience parts of the space program not otherwise open to the public. You will travel past the massive Vehicle Assembly Building (the worlds largest building) where NASA is currently constructing a rocket that will eventually take astronauts to Mars.

At the $100 million Space Shuttle Atlantis exhibit, a giant screen shows an IMAX 3D film on the origin and history of the space shuttle program that went to space and back 33 times. The video is accompanied by a soaring soundtrack. One of the most complicated and sophisticated pieces of equipment ever built, the shuttle was launched like a rocket, flew in orbit like a spacecraft, and landed on a runway like a glider.

When the video is over, the wall behind the front screen opens and you come face-to-face with Atlantis herself. A magical touch. Visitors experience a display as only spacewalking astronauts have seen her before the Atlantis is rotated 43.21 degrees with payload doors open and its robotic arm extended, as if it had just undocked from the International Space Station (ISS).

There are more than 60 interactive exhibits and high-tech simulators that bring to life the complex systems and components behind this incredible feat of engineering. The shuttle fleet was the main method of transporting and building the ISS and other space wonders including the legendary Hubble Telescope. Interactive kiosks explain each section of the spacecraft. Kids and adults alike rush to climb into replicas of the pilots seat where youre at the yoke ready to land Atlantis.

Virtually within the shadow of the historic rocket towers, prehistoric sea turtles carry out their renewal-of-life rituals. The surrounding beaches are the birthing place for hundreds of loggerhead, green and leatherback turtles that lumber ashore during the night, dig nests with their flippers and deposit 60 to 100, ping-pong ball size eggs that hatch in the late summer and early fall.

Established in 1962 and operated by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge provides a protected habitat for migratory birds and endangered and threatened species. Home to more than a dozen pairs of bald eagles, they perch atop high towers, trees or utility poles and build nests more than six feet in diameter. There are more than 15 varieties of endangered wildlife near the Kennedy Space Center, including West Indian manatees that swim in the surrounding waterways.

Also near the space center is Canaveral National Seashore, created by Congress in 1975. With 24 miles of beach, it has the longest section of undeveloped beach along Floridas eastern coastline home to 1,045 species of plants and 310 species of birds. Endangered species include sea turtle, manatee, Southern bald eagle, wood stork, peregrine falcon, eastern indigo snake, and Florida scrub jay. With beaches from south of New Smyrna Beach to Titusville, Canaveral National Seashoreis one of the last of the Florida wildernesses.

White House reconstitutes National Space Council – The Space Reporter

The Trump Administration officially reconstituted the National Space Council, an advisory group that once provided the White House with guidance on space policy, through an executive order announced at a public ceremony on Friday, June 30.

Attendees at the ceremony included Apollo 11 astronaut Buzz Aldrin, Acting NASA Administrator Robert Lightfoot, American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) executive director Sandy Magnus, president and CEO of United Launch Alliance (ULA) Tory Bruno, Vice President Mike Pence, various members of Congress, and representatives of other commercial spaceflight companies.

In earlier statements, President Donald Trump said Pence would lead the council, which was disbanded after President George H.W. Bush left office in 1993.

Todays announcement sends a clear signal to the world that we are restoring Americas proud legacy of leadership in space, Trump said during the ten-minute ceremony, which was not televised.

The National Space Council will be a central hub guiding space policy within the administration. And I will draw on it for advice and information and recommendations for action, the president noted.

According to the executive order, the National Space Council will include several cabinet members, NASA representatives, and leaders of the commercial spaceflight industry.

A Users Advisory Group will assure that the interests of non-government entities involved in spaceflight, including commercial spaceflight companies, are represented on the Council.

Among the Councils responsibilities will be reviewing space policy, fostering cooperation and technology sharing among private and public entities in space-related activities, and making recommendations to the president.

Lightfoot described the re-establishment of the Council as a testament to the importance of space exploration to our economy, our nation, and the planet as a whole.

Mary Lynne Dittmar, president and CEO of the Coalition for Space Exploration, commended the action as a sign of renewed commitment to NASAs deep space exploration program.

No details were provided on how the Council will conduct day-to-day operations. Individual members will be appointed in the near future.

When dealing with the equity markets, investors are often tasked with trying to find stocks that are bound for glory. Every investor dreams of finding those stocks that were overlooked but are poised to pick up momentum. New investors are often instructed to set goals before starting to invest. Creating attainable, realistic goals can be a good starting point before digging into the investment trenches. After setting up goals considering financial status, objectives, timeframes and risk appetite, the next step may involve creating an actionable plan. Once the plan is in place, it may be extremely important to routinely monitor the performance of the portfolio. There are often many well crafted investment plans that for whatever reason dont seem to be working out properly. Being able to evaluate and adjust the plan based on market activity may end up being the difference between a winning or losing portfolio. Being able to adapt to the fast paced and often times tumultuous market landscape can be a gigantic benefit for long-term portfolio health.

Deep diving into thetechnical levels forNanoTech Entertainment Inc (NTEK), we note that the equitycurrently has a 14-day Commodity Channel Index (CCI) of -18.73. Active investors may choose to use this technical indicator as a stock evaluation tool. Used as a coincident indicator, the CCI reading above +100 would reflect strong price action which may signal an uptrend. On the flip side, a reading below -100 may signal a downtrend reflecting weak price action. Using the CCI as a leading indicator, technical analysts may use a +100 reading as an overbought signal and a -100 reading as an oversold indicator, suggesting a trend reversal.

NanoTech Entertainment Incs Williams Percent Range or 14 day Williams %R currently sits at -31.00. The Williams %R oscillates in a range from 0 to -100. A reading between 0 and -20 would point to an overbought situation. A reading from -80 to -100 would signal an oversold situation. The Williams %R was developed by Larry Williams. This is a momentum indicator that is the inverse of the Fast Stochastic Oscillator.

Currently, the 14-day ADX for NanoTech Entertainment Inc (NTEK) is sitting at 32.31. Generally speaking, an ADX value from 0-25 would indicate an absent or weak trend. A value of 25-50 would support a strong trend. A value of 50-75 would identify a very strong trend, and a value of 75-100 would lead to an extremely strong trend. ADX is used to gauge trend strength but not trend direction. Traders often add the Plus Directional Indicator (+DI) and Minus Directional Indicator (-DI) to identify the direction of a trend.

The RSI, or Relative Strength Index, is a widely used technical momentum indicator that compares price movement over time. The RSI was created by J. Welles Wilder who was striving to measure whether or not a stock was overbought or oversold. The RSI may be useful for spotting abnormal price activity and volatility. The RSI oscillates on a scale from 0 to 100. The normal reading of a stock will fall in the range of 30 to 70. A reading over 70 would indicate that the stock is overbought, and possibly overvalued. A reading under 30 may indicate that the stock is oversold, and possibly undervalued. After a recent check, the 14-day RSIforNanoTech Entertainment Inc (NTEK) is currently at 45.07, the 7-day stands at 53.79, and the 3-day is sitting at 74.20.

What is an ICBM? How ‘lethal’ North Korea nuclear missile could unleash hell in WW3 – Daily Star

NORTH Korea has revealed it fired an an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) today but what is it and how far can it reach?

North Korea declared itself a "nuclear power" after launching an ICBM into the Sea of Japan in yet another missile test that angered the international community today.

An ICBM is a long-range guided ballistic missile with a minimum range of 5,500 kilometres.

In theory, it is thought US and North Korea which are around 8,000km apart could strike each other with an ICBM.

The primary purpose of the missile is to delivery several warheads containing nuclear weapons on multiple long range targets.

ICBM were first deployed by the Soviet Union in 1958, following by the US in 1959 and China some 20 years later.

Peak speed for an ICMB is around 14,500mph or 6-7km/s with a 10 minute acceleration period.

At that speed an ICBM fired from Moscow could reach New York in around 20 to 30 minutes.

ICBMs can be deployed from multiple platforms, including missile silos, submarines, heavy trucks and mobile launchers on rails.

Russia's RS-24 Yars Intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) can strike anywhere in the US with ten nuclear warheads, according to reports.

US nukes are like Ferraris: beautiful, intricate, and designed for high performance.

China has developed a similar platform, and the US has no way to defend against such devastating nukes.

In comparison, the US's Minuteman III ICBM carries just one warhead, and was introduced in the 1970s.

Dr. Jeffrey Lewis, publisher of Arms Control Wonk, said the US possess the most accurate nukes in the world.

He said: US nukes are like Ferraris: beautiful, intricate, and designed for high performance.

Experts have said the plutonium pits will last for 100s of years."

Is LSD the new coffee? – FactorDaily

Story Highlights

Netflix CEO Reed Hastings caused a flutter last year when he said that in the future, entertainment could be replaced by pharmacological substitutes (read pills). Why make visual and auditory stories when they can be generated directly in your head?

Anyone who has tuned into Silicon Valleys heartbeat wouldnt be surprised. In the recent past, the collective gaze of the Valley has fallen on a new platform to play around with: the human body and mind, and pharmacological tools are a big part of it.

Unlike Reed Hastings vision of recreation, Silicon Valleys chemical obsession is in pursuit of hacking the mind beyond its limits. Startup warriors in the Valley are wielding pharmacological weaponry in their battle for supremacy in the domain.

The newest trend, however, involves chemistry with a coloured past psychedelics. This time around, psychedelics may have less to do with astral planes and more to do with the mundanity of work. Is this the beginning of a new trip for all of us?

They call it microdosing. Reams have been written about it, but herere some basic facts:

LSD, psilocybin (street name: magic mushrooms) and marijuana are the usual weapons of choice. A microdose is about 15-20 micrograms, about a fifth of the recreational dose that causes you to trip. It doesnt stop you from engaging in your daily routine. You dont switch off from reality. Instead, you become sharper, creative and more social.

At least, thats how the anecdotes go.

A microdose is about 15-20 micrograms, about a fifth of the recreational dose that causes you to trip. It doesnt stop you from engaging in your daily routine. You dont switch off from reality. Instead, you become sharper, creative and more social

If all this sounds extremely unscientific, it is. Today, microdosing is more a fad but its fast becoming a reality. Startup founders, CEOs, programmers, designers, etc are all taking little doses of psychedelics, some daily and others once in a few days, and claiming positive results. Stories from microdosers claiming that it has helped them solve a difficult problem or crack a complex game level are common.

Interest in the trend is on the rise. The microdosing subreditt today has more than 17,000 subscribers compared to a couple of thousands back in 2015. A search for microdosing books on Amazon throws up more than 20 results with titles such as The New Psychedelic Revolution: The Genesis of the Visionary Age and A Really Good Day: How Microdosing Made a Mega Difference in My Mood, My Marriage, and My Life.

One of the more popular books is The Psychedelic Explorers Guide: Safe, Therapeutic, and Sacred Journeys by James Fadiman, the man who may have laid the roots of the current microdosing trend.

Fadimans history with psychedelics is long. In 1966, he published a study linking creative thinking and hallucinogens. But what kickstarted the current trend was his microdosing cheat sheet a manual for interested users that he created in 2010. And his book documenting the benefits.

He was peeling off from the suggestion of Albert Hoffman, the father of LSD who lived to a prime age of 102 years, that small doses of the substance have a positive impact on mental health. Fadiman has since been building an informal study group and receiving user reports documenting the effects of microdosing since.

Claims such as lost my usual anxiety and more focused and in tune are common to find in forums discussing the experience of microdosing

The majority of the feedback from his study is positive. Users report an uptick in performance and mood. Blogs and tech media are filled with magical stories of improvement in mental alertness and happiness levels. Claims such as lost my usual anxiety and more focused and in tune are common to find in forums discussing the experience of microdosing.

Its part of a larger trend. A trend of using nootropics, biohacking and numerous other calibrated lifestyle hacks in an attempt to achieve an ideal physical and mental state. Can this bring psychedelics out of the shadows and into the mainstream?

Humans and psychedelics go back a long way. Our history of the last 10,000 years is dotted with close contact with psychedelics like opium, mescaline, cannabis and magic mushrooms. They were cultivated and used everywhere from South america to Europe to Asia.

Some even believe that psychedelics could have aided in some major cognitive milestones in culture, society and religion. Closer home, the Vedas contain copious references to the sacred, ritualistic soma, a potion that can provide a lightness of being, wisdom and happiness (in some cases immortality). Psychedelic-led transcendence have been part of spiritual experiences around the world.

Also read: Boheco wants to weed out the stigma around this cannabis cousin

But in the modern era, psychedelics exploded into our consciousness in the mid-nineties after Albert Hoffman synthesised LSD in his lab in 1938. After two decades of gestating in research labs and in elite homes, psychedelics flamed out into the world in the early sixties.

In the counter-culture era, psychedelics became a way of life. Turn off your mind, relax, and float downstream, sang John Lennon, cajoling his listeners to cut the cord with the boring reality. Writers, singers and musicians exhorted the capability of the drug to produce revelations. Rock n roll put psychedelics on steroids.

It escalated quickly and occasionally things went wrong. The public panicked. Governments reacted with bans and strict regulations. But despite the controls, psychedelics continued influencing art and music. They became synonymous with breaking the shackles of big government, big military and big corporates.

But, they had a huge brand problem as they came to be linked with the strange, excessive culture of the 60s and 70s. That was, until, they found their way into a new cult that was (perhaps unknown then) designing more powerful addictions for the coming millennia using technology.

People are organic machines that can be fine-tuned for magical perfection. This is the thought process that drives Silicon Valleys persistent attempts at pushing the limits of its own mental prowess

Thus began the revival of brand psychedelics in the circuits of Silicon Valley.

People are organic machines that can be fine-tuned for magical perfection. This is the thought process that drives Silicon Valleys persistent attempts at pushing the limits of its own mental prowess. Its position as the dispenser of world-changing innovations has amped up the intellect as the most-valued resource of the modern era.

The rock stars of the modern age wore turtlenecks and hoodies, built personal computers and eclipsed even the Beatles in their fan following. For these demi-gods and those working with them, expanding the mind became a necessity and they turned to chemistry. Steve Jobs spoke in glowing terms about how LSD helped open up his mind and improve thinking.

Slowly, but surely, psychedelics are shuffling from the cord-cutting-with-reality recreational camp into the personal improvement camp. Theres increasing evidence that LSD and some other psychedelics may be less dangerous than cigarettes and alcohol.

Over the last 20 years, the US Food and drug administration (FDA) has approved research on the medical and therapeutic effects of psychedelics with promising results. LSD could have a positive impact in treating anxiety in patients with terminal illness, post-traumatic stress disorders and obsessive-compulsive disorders. One study found that psychedelics could help reduce domestic violence among those with substance abuse problems. Another medical trial study in the UK is attempting to understand if LSD in small doses can cure depression.

Yet, evidence is thin and dosing psychedelics for cognitive enhancements is even less understood. The fact that the Fadimans unscientific study based on self-reported results may be the largest body of research on this subject says something.

Governments and corporates have been largely unwilling to fund research even from a clinical benefits point of view. When the UK governments chief advisor on drugs, David Nutt, spoke positively about drugs and their clinical benefits, he was fired, leading him to claim that the way governments ban research on drugs is akin to the wrath Galileo faced from Catholic church for his research.

But dramatics aside, theres been a steady chipping away of the taboos surrounding mind-altering substances. The legalisation and regulation of cannabis in the US is a case in point. UK, Thailand, New Zealand, Canada and more countries are soon to follow.

Could the microdosing movement reframe the world view on psychedelics like LSD and psilocybin? Will it become as common as sipping on coffee for stimulation?

When it comes to psychedelics, its the fear of the unknown that keeps us circumspect. And theres only one place thats made an attempt to imagine a future with them: science fiction.

Weve obviously got to talk about Brave New World. Aldous Huxleys nightmarish future where drugs and technology make us all sheep to be controlled by the powerful elite resonantes with possibility. Soma, the happiness drug in the story, disconnected people from reality, poisoned them and softened critical thinking.

Yet, a couple of decades after he wrote the novel, Aldous Huxley himself got sucked into the world of psychedelics (first mescaline, then LSD). He wrote about his experiences in the book The Doors of Perception where his tone had changed into one of appreciation of the ability of psychedlics to offer new insights. Huxley became such a proponent of the substance that he requested he be injected with LSD on his death bed.

Does this mean his dystopian imagination was unfounded? Or was it an ironic display of the very dystopia with Huxley becoming a slave to the drug?

The spectre of a Brave New World rises whenever we hear about using drugs for moral improvement. Prozac is known to reduce aggression and oxytocin increases empathy. If drugs could reduce deviant behaviour like violence, racism, etc, and governments get increasingly interested in them, will they be used as a tool of control? Perhaps they can start by chemically correcting those in the prison system.

Other writers have written about drugs causing altered world views. Philip K Dick, who employed psychedelics personally and as a plot device, often painted mind-bending escapes that hopped between transcendental knowledge to revelation of dark and decayed emotional states. His book, A Scanner Darkly, however, is a descend into the hell caused by drugs a dire warning on what substance abuse could cause.

Prozac is known to reduce aggression and oxytocin increases empathy. If drugs could reduce deviant behaviour like violence, racism, etc, and governments get increasingly interested in them, will they be used as a tool of control

Frank Herbert, the American science fiction writer best known for Dune, employed drugs as powerful tools that could generate prophetic visions and bend space-time in the series. He too, was not restricting psychedelics to just his novels.

Which of these worlds will psychedelics help create? A dark, dystopian one where were without control or one that provides us with elevated perceptiveness.

Stanislaw Lem, who outdoes Philip K Dick in mind-bendery in his book The Futurological Congress: From the Memoirs of Ijon Tichy, paints a world thats solved most of its problems with pharmacology. It feels utopian and dystopian at the same time. Which is the point Lem makes.

Imagine if someone from the past gets a glimpse of the things we do in the modern era. Theyd see us driving around poison-spewing, people-crushing metal monsters that zip on our roads. Or, look at us staring into screens all day long, lost and hooked. It may well seem like a complete dystopian nightmare. Yet, for those living it, it wouldnt nearly be as frightening.

We have some way to go before well all be shooting down smoothies laced with LSD. Could such small sub-psychoactive doses even make a difference? It is all just a placebo effect? What if we develop tolerance for small doses, leading to escalated dosing? Could we develop an addiction from prolonged use, leading to dependence?

Science needs to catch up and give answers. Given our long history with psychedelics, perhaps it is time.

Stevie Ryan chronicled her extensive depression treatments, including TMS, on her mental health podcast – Starcasm.net

Saturday night comedian and pop culture commentator Stevie Ryan lost a long and hard fought battle with depression. Stevie has been very open and public about her quest for depression treatment, peppering in tweets about 3-hour-long talk therapy sessions and Instagram posts about transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) treatments (above) along with her scathing humor about pop culture and reality stars like the Teen Mom cast and the Kardashians.

Three months ago Stevie Ryan launched a mental health podcast called Mentally Ch(ill) with fellow comedian Kristen Carney. The episodes, which are embedded below, involve frank and humorous about all aspects of living with depression and seeking treatment.

In podcast posted on May 23, 2017, Ryan talks about embarking a month-long set of every day TMS (transcranial magnetic stimulation) treatments. As pictured above, the treatments involve her sitting there with a giant magnet on her brain. According to the Mayo Clinic website, TMS is often used when most other depression treatments have been ineffective.

The magnet is supposed to deliver a pulse that stimulates nerve cells in parts of the brain that regulate mood. I just have to sit there for a half-hour while this magnet just pounds on my head, Ryan explained on the podcast. It will move your eyebrows a little.

She went on to say that they fitted her for her personal device by testing to see which part of the brain they could stimulate that would make your fingers and hands start twitching. They told her they could also do that to her legs. Shed only had one real treatment before she already started to see a difference in her mood in the morning. Usually, Ryan said she cried every single morning when she woke up, but the day after her first TMS session, she didnt feel the need to cry. I dont know what it is, Im just so sad inside, she said about why she regularly cried.

In her last podcast episode, which was uploaded two days before her death, Ryan was severely grieving the death of her beloved grandfather. The episode was recorded just a few hours after her grandfather died. Ive just kind of watched him wither away in the past two weeks and its really, really sad to watch someone who youve grown up your entire life and who you see as the manliest man ever just slowly deteriorate. And, its actually the hardest thing that Ive ever dealt with in my entire life, Ryan said through tears. It just sucks and I will miss him forever. This is just a part of life, but I am just worried that this is gonna send me into a deeper depression. Or maybe it will take me out of my depression a little bit to see that life is short and that we just dont have as much time as we think we do with people that we love or care about.

Co-host Kristen Carney said that they had just recorded a very candid episode about suicide, which they couldnt put out because of audio quality issues. She expressed an interest in rerecording the episode, but wondered if the death of Ryans grandfather had changed her views about suicide.

Ryan expressed confusion over how well her mother was handling the death of the grandfather compared to her. Carney recommended that she ask her doctors at her next TMS treatment to possibly get her on some sort of depression medication to stave off a further spiral. Stevie expressed concern about asking for medication because she says on the last visit they wanted to prescribe her Lithium, which she wanted to stay away from because of the side effects like hair loss and weight gain. Ryan had previously been on Prozac.

Carney also suggested that since Ryan was going through the grieving process, she should avoid isolating herself. Ryan replied that for the first time in a while, she did not feel like isolating herself.

Stevies story is a heartbreaking example of some of the painful realities of dealing with mental health disorders like severe depression, especially during very fragile times in our lives. People are not usually open to talking about their feelings or talking openly like like this, Ryan said in the podcasts first episode. The honesty and gallows humor in the podcast is much like comedian Paul Gilmartins Mental Illness Happy Hour, which has been running since 2011.

Another common theme in these two podcasts is the wisdom that professional success and fame is not the answer to happiness or depression relief. Gilmartin earned a good living on the TBS show Dinner and Movie, while Ryan found a lot of success with YouTube which led to her own VH1 sketch comedy show. When I was doing well in life, I was so lonely and depressed, she said of her time on television.

The Betrayed Girls: A case of political correctness gone badly … – iNews

The BBC drama Three Girls, about the grooming of white teenage girls by Pakistani men in Rochdale, won critical acclaim earlier this year. Now a blistering feature-length documentary, The Betrayed Girls tells the story behind the headlines, exploring why the police turned a blind eye to systematic sexual grooming for decades.

The film raised uncomfortable questions about multicultural Britain and the failure of the establishment to protect societys most vulnerable. At its heart lay the conclusion that political correctness stopped the authorities from publicly condemning Pakistani men for fear of racist accusations.

It was only when a Muslim lawyer was appointed chief prosecutor of North West England that the abusers were brought to justice.

Political correctness was just one of the social attitudes that led to the failure of the police to prosecute numerous men, largely Pakistani, in cities including Birmingham, Bradford and Manchester. The indifference towards vulnerable, sexually active girls many of whom were in care and deemed to be deviant was also palpable.

Sara Rowbotham, a care worker in Rochdale, reported more than 100 cases of abuse to the police, but none was investigated. In the West Yorkshire town of Keighley, police dismissed reports of abuse of girls aged 12 and 13 because they were consenting even though sex with a minor is an illegal act.

Labour MP Ann Cryer tried and failed to make Keighley police take the reports of abuse by Pakistani men seriously. In the film, she blames political correctitude. Her fears that the story would be reclaimed by the far-right came true when BNP leader Nick Griffin seized on the reports to protest in Keighley against Muslim men abusing white British girls. It was a fear that also prevented Times journalist Andrew Norfolk from originally covering the story.

In another recent documentary, Channel 4s Wife Swap: Brexit Special, Leaver Pauline says she backed Brexit because of political correctness gone mad. The Rochdale abuse scandal broke years before Brexit, but at its heart lies a familiar narrative of the establishment looking after its own interests while white, working-class people are ignored.

The Betrayed Girls was unflinching in its verdict of the polices failure. Its rare to find I agree with a Daily Mail headline, but the only conclusion to draw is that the girls were betrayed by the PC cowards. Its a lesson we must all learn from.

Political correctness dampens UNLV logo – Las Vegas Review-Journal

Does a university the size of UNLV not have an art department? A graphics department?

So UNLV revealed its new logo, which depicts an updated PC version of the previous one. While I get that we must now say, act and feel PC all the time, why not take it a step further and depict an androgynous person?

Personally, I wouldnt care if the new logo had an otter and a bottle of shampoo on it. The real issue is the cost. The school spent $50,000 in donor money. Are you serious? Does a university the size of UNLV not have an art department? A graphics department? Why not offer a prize to the winning developer and allow the students and the boosters to vote on the best one? Use the donated money to either fund scholarships or feed the thousands of hungry children here in the valley.

The cost was excessive and, frankly, Im over the ridiculous PC culture that has taken over our lives and been crammed down our throats.

In The Mix: The Continuing Evolution Of Soulwax – Clash Magazine

Belgian electro-pop trailblazers Soulwax have awoken after a decade or so stuck in standby mode.

This down-period might have been more active than most, with the central Dewaele brothers touring as 2manydjs, Despacio (with James Murphy of LCD Soundsystem) and, well, Soulwax itself when it took their fancy. However, given that their last original studio album was 2004's 'Any Minute Now', it's safe to say that the release of recent record From Deewee marks a proper return to the musical frontline for the sharp suited synth-botherers.

Soulwax were never known for making things easy for themselves and this is no routine release. Recorded in one single take after two weeks rehearsal with three different drummers, the latest record was the offspring of ambition, experimentation and looming deadlines.

We had a date by which, if it wasnt all recorded and mixed and sent off, there would be no vinyl release, no digital release, no anything. So a lot of that process came out of necessity, explains singer and co-band leader David Dewaele. We had to start at the end and think backwards to plan every second of our time, because there was absolutely no leeway. The process took about two weeks, but we only had two days where everyone was in the studio together. I think we managed the whole thing on the 18th take.

- - -

A lot of that process came out of necessity...

- - -

Despite such a stress-inducing recording process, the band have no regrets about taking such an unorthodox approach. "I think whether it's a year or two weeks youve spent perfecting a record, your feelings about it are roughly the same," David muses, "Its easy to say this is how it should have been, but ultimately thats how it was at that time. And thats it. Once its done and once its out it doesnt belong to you any more."

In many way's 'From Deewee' has the same advantages and disadvantages as a live album, capturing the band at a very short, specific stage in their career and preserving it in amber for all to see. "There is no definitive version," as David sagely puts it, "theres just that performance.

He also points out that, due to the unique way that the record was created, audiences at their live shows basically get to see the albums recording process recreated in full with the same personnel, equipment and setup they used back in their studio in Ghent, Belgium. Its three drummers facing off on either side, with us in the middle on machines, he explains before descending into a deluge of audiophilic jargon about how they map the sound of the different kits on stage to pan differently depending on where you are in the audience.

- - -

- - -

Davids use of the term machines instead of instruments pretty much sums up the groups approach to artistry. He and his brother are never happier than when testing the capabilities of musical technology and disappearing down the synthetic rabbit hole in the pursuit of new ideas. In fact the group would have loved to compose an album to be entirely performed by machines, if only that pesky Aphex Twin hadn't got there first. "It excites us trying to find new ways to do unique things with these machines," he explains, citing fellow eccentric gent from Ghent Godfreid-Willem Raes (creator of and composer for the largest robot orchestra in the world) as one of the innovators they most admire.

But the most impressively machine-like aspect of Soulwaxs sound in 2017 isnt the bleeps and bloops of the bands considerable electronic arsenal; it's the aforementioned drum trifecta.

First on their new percussive roster is the heavy-hitting Igor Cavalera of metal trailblazers Sepultura, not a musician youd immediately associate with the nerdy synth-rock of Soulwax. Also on sticks is Vicky Jean Smith, who played with The Big Pink, Ipso Facto and M.I.A. Shes kind of on the other end of the spectrum to Igor, who is just this incredible machine, explains David (to whom human drummers are merely the motors that power a larger contraption). "She brings a real, for want of a better word, groove. Shes every bit as powerful as Igor but her beats are more swung than programmed." Completing the rhythmic troika is Turbowolf's Blake Davies, who David describes as "kind of in the middle" of the other two's stylistic extremes.

- - -

She brings a real, for want of a better word, groove...

- - -

Performing as a poly-rhythmic outfit allows the album's songs to neatly segue into one another as the trio pick up each others beats and add subtle embellishments, or take it in turns to build up towering 'pass the parcel'-style fills. This complements 'From Deewee's non-stop nature, its origin as a single take making it sound almost like one long robotic symphony. This is, in part, due to the Dewaele brothers long running side-hustle as 2manydjs. David admits that the record "is almost more like a DJ mix than a standard album. We planned the position of the songs way in advance with the way each one would transition into the next in mind.

Despite the many lessons he and his brother Stephen have learnt since Soulwax last released an album, David is adamant that there's no reason his band couldn't have made a record like it back in their early 00s heyday. On a technical level anyone could have made this album!" he laughs, "but I guess you always need a set of circumstances to make a specific album, and given there was a decade of difference between us in 2017 and the version of us that released Most Of... Im sure that affected the nature of the album we ended up with in some way.

- - -

Make it all about the records...

- - -

After a jawdropping showcase of this unusual live performance at M.I.A's Meltdown Festival, Soulwax will actually only play one other UK Festival: Bluedot Festival at Manchester's Jodrell Bank Observatory. Given that it also merges together science, technology, music and a healthy passion for discovery, this seems like the perfect fit for a group dedicated to using scientific means to expand their sound palette. Having the festival next to the famous Lovell Telescope seems particularly apt to David, as a lot of the identity of a festival comes down to location".

But despite their serious geek credentials, Soulwax would never curate something quite so conceptual themselves. We tend to hang out with nerds," David admits, "But were not as smart as the guys who create stuff like that, if we were to curate a festival we would probably just make it more of a vinyl fair. Make it all about the records. Sure Soulwax might be studio tech-wizards again, but as the 'From Deewee' track acknowledges, their singer has become a deejay, and that's a tricky transformation to come back from.

Catch Soulwax at Blue Dot festival, Jordrell Bank this weekend (July 7th - 9th).

Arsenal: 3 players to top off Alexandre Lacazette evolution – Pain In The Arsenal

Arsenal: Olivier Giroud and Alexandre Lacazette make perfectly peculiar crowd by Andrew Dowdeswell

GENT, BELGIUM SEPTEMBER 16: Alexandre Lacazette of Lyon battles for the ball with Stefan Mitrovic of Gent during the UEFA Champions League Group H match between KAA Gent and Olympique Lyonnais held at Ghelamco Arena on September 16, 2015 in Gent, Belgium. (Photo by Dean Mouhtaropoulos/Getty Images)

Alexandre Lacazette is set to be an Arsenal player. After Lyon President Jean Michel-Aulas announced that a deal was agreed upon, Lacazette arrived in North London on Monday morning to undergo a medical and complete the switch. He signals an attacking evolution that Arsene Wenger is seemingly keen to instigate. However, adding just one player is not enough to fully execute such a significant and substantial change.

Here are three players to top off the attacking evolution that Lacazette has started.

The French revolution of young attacking talent is quite remarkable. While many mayfocus on the household names Paul Pogba, Kylian Mbappe, Antoine Griezmann, Ousmane Dembele there are still many others in the French system that are wonderfully gifted players, even if they may not garner the same coverage and hype.

One of those players is Thomas Lemar, a 21-year-old winger who has been a part of the ruthless Monaco side that have sliced open every opponent in their path on their way to a Champions League semi-final and Ligue 1 title. Lemar himself is a technical, composed winger, who uses his excellent balance and spatial awareness to outmanoeuvre his opponents, rather than merely sprint past them as the quicker attackers may do.

He would slide into the Arsenal team with great ease. He has the intelligence and vision that Wenger demands of his attacking players. He also has a great future ahead of him, given his age and youthfulness. Anchoring an attacking revolution on his and Lacazettes talents would be no bad thing whatsoever.

Evolutionary challenge: people are drawn to mates because they are attractive – The Australian Financial Review

Actror Alexander Skarsgard: good genes, or just attractive? If animals prefer mates based on criteria that are not simply proxies for genetic fitness, then evolution is more expansive than generally imagined.

Can female preferences shape male behaviour? This is a scientific question and one with a long, controversial history.

Shortly after the 1871 publication of Charles Darwin's The Descent of Man,a biologist named StGeorge Mivart wrote a review criticising its proposed theory of sexual selection: Mivart refused to believe that the preferences and choices of females could constitute a selective pressure that shaped the behaviour and physiology of male animals. Relying more on Victorian male prejudice than scientific reasoning, Mivart concluded that "the instability of vicious feminine caprice" could never shape the evolution of males.

Darwin, however, believed that female preferences could in fact shape the evolution of ornamental traits in males (deer antlers, peacock feathers and the like). He even described sexual selection occurring through the mechanism of female agency: "The male Argus Pheasant acquired his beauty gradually through the preference of the females during many generations for the more highly ornamented males," he wrote in Descent.

Darwin's was a minority opinion, and it remains one to this day. Alfred Russel Wallace, the co-discoverer of evolution by natural selection, first articulated what has become a dominant view that female animals simply prefer traits that are proxies for health and fitness. Beauty, in short, is just a sign of good genes, and females select mates on this basis alone.

A new book by Yale University ornithologist RichardPrum revives and expands Darwin's provocative notion that beauty and genetic fitness are not always entwined. In The Evolution of Beauty: How Darwin's Forgotten Theory of Mate Choice Shapes the Animal World and Us,Prum develops a theory of aesthetic evolution that shows how the females of many species select male traits not for their fitness value but simply because they are pleasing.

This might sound like an esoteric distinction within evolutionary biology, but its consequences are far-reaching. If animals prefer mates based on criteria that are not simply proxies for genetic fitness, then evolution is a far more expansive process than generally imagined. It can even accommodate some maladaptive features and behaviours, so long as they have sufficient aesthetic appeal.

Darwin and Prum present evolution as more than an engine that selects organisms with adaptive advantages. They claim that sexual selection operates in part through individual aesthetic preferences for songs, dances, displays, ornaments and even behaviours. Animals are not only shaped by the natural world, they also shape their own evolution through their preferences.

It makes sense that an ornithologist would be a champion of the aesthetic dimensions of evolution. Prum has observed more than a third of the roughly 10,000 species of birds in the world. The vast variety of distinctive avian colorations and song patterns is difficult to explain solely in terms of adaptive fitness. The club-winged manakin, for instance, is a species from the Ecuadorian Andes that "sings" by rubbing its wings together at high frequencies. These wing songs require evolutionary changes that are actually maladaptive. While other species of birds have hollow bones, the club-winged manakins have solid ulnas that help enhance the sound production of their wing songs. This decreases their flight capacity and efficiency, but these disadvantages seem to be offset by the mating opportunities that the songs create.

This is just one of many examples. Spotted bowerbirds from Australia have precise preferences for the types and colours of materials they use to build bowers, the ornamental structures they use to attract mates. One species favours a particular shade of royal blue, while another uses an optical illusion known as forced perspective that makes objects appear to be a different size than they actually are. The birds are not simply advertising their physical strength by collecting bower construction materials that are more difficult to find. They use very common materials the skill is in the arrangement. "There is no compelling evidence that bower decorations are costly, honest signals of male quality," Prum writes. "Rather, they appear to vary like any other aesthetic styles among species." Males with better-constructed and more elaborately decorated bowers are rewarded with more mating opportunities.

The particulars of avian architecture, courtship dances and songs are thus somewhat contingent and arbitrary. Rather than functioning as signals of health or genetic quality, these complex behaviours develop over generations through the selective pressure of countless individual choices by avian females. Prum argues convincingly that the subjective experience of animalsthe pleasure they take in aesthetic display is a major evolutionary force. What is less clear and never really considered is whether animals are conscious of this pleasure and what it means when we say they experience beauty.

Prum opens his argument with avian examples, but he closes it by considering how the same principles might have shaped human evolution. He speculates that a broad range of features and behaviours such as deweaponised canine teeth, eyebrows and pubic hair may have originated through aesthetic evolution. Perhaps human females preferred some of these traits in males on purely aesthetic grounds: It's hard to account for eyebrows as a highly functional indicator of genetic quality.

Prum is particularly eager to emphasise the role that female mating preferences may have played in human evolution, as if feminist arguments were simply waiting for the imprimatur of a biologist. While some of these conjectures are more plausible than others, the book is a major intellectual achievement that should hasten the adoption of a more expansive style of evolutionary explanation that Darwin himself would have appreciated.

Evolutionary challenge: people are drawn to mates because they are attractive - The Australian Financial Review

Thailand league and national team may be included in Pro … – Goal.com

The rise of Thai football on the international stage in the past few years has also attracted the attention of the video game industry.

The Thai League and Thailand national team may be included in the popular football video game Pro Evolution Soccer if discussions between all parties go well, according to FA Thailand Deputy General Secretary Patit Suphaphongs.

According to the Thai edition of Goal, Konami, the company that makes Pro Evolution Soccer, FA Thailand and Plan-B Media, FA Thailand's official rights manager, had an initial meeting to seek opportunity on Tuesday.

"Both of us need this. Konami knows that the South East Asia market has been growing, only second to China, which is number one. So it's obviously a rapidly growing market here.

"We know this too, and know that this will spread Thai football to gamers. Video games are also an excellent tool to introduce players, teams and the Thai League itself to the world.

"So we're discussing the possibilities of working together, both on mobile and console platforms. We will help them be familiar with the Thailand market, and take note of their goals.

"After this we will move on to licensing. We believe our contents can support the game as well. They also have their terms and condition details about licensing. So it's still in the discussion stage here," explained Suphaphongs.

However, South East Asian fans eager to play as their favourite Thai club need to waitlonger, as the plan is for the Thai teams to be included in the 2020 edition of the game.

"We are looking for the opportunity to integrate Thai clubs and competitions to the future PES, on both mobile and console platforms. We are aiming for the Pro Evolution Soccer edition that will come out in two years' time, as the 2018 edition is already completed while the 2019 edition is nearing completion.

"The mobile edition can be developed faster due to its rapidly-updating nature, but for consoles it is likely to take more time.

"Another option that we have is for Konami to develop an entirely new game, specifically for the Thai League," Suphaphongs said.
