Congress should sunset any extension of the intelligence communitys dubious electronic surveillance authority to intercept, store, and search the contents of international communications under section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act Amendments of 2008.

Enacted in 2008, section 702 initially sunset in 2012. Congress later extended the sunset date until December 31, 2017.

Generally speaking, a statute should sunset whenever predictable changes in technology threaten statutory obsolescence; its encroachment on liberty is unknown or uncertain; the statutes effectiveness is doubtful; the governments compliance with the statute is spotty; or, the constitutionality of the statute remains in doubt.

All five of these time-honored considerations militate in favor of a sunset date for any extension of section 702 beyond December 31, 2017.

Digital technologies are changing a warp speed. What is science fiction today is reality tomorrow.

The changes affect the ways in which international communications are conducted; and, government capabilities for intercepting, storing, and searching the contents of international communications. Indeed, section 702 responded in part to the migration of international telecommunications from satellite to fiber. The development of cloud technologies has has confounded the Stored Communications Act of 1986 as illustrated by the United States Court of Appeals decision in Microsoft Corp. v. United States.

The governments technical capabilities for intercepting, storing, and searching the contents of international communications are rapidly expanding. These pioneering technologies might easily evade limits imposed by section 702 written by Congress with an eye on 2017. Any section 702 extension should thus sunset in four years to insure against a horse-and-buggy statute governing in an age of interstate highways.

Another sunset for 702 is also prudent because of the governments professed ignorance of its to intercept or search the international communications of American citizens protected by the Fourth Amendment. At present, the government insists it is unable to distinguish between electronic communications between foreign persons located outside the United States and communications between a foreigner and a U.S. person in the United States. Thus, Congress is clueless as to the magnitude of section 702 invasions of the constitutionally protected privacy of United States citizens. This information should be known and disclosed by the intelligence community before Congress should even consider making section 702 permanent.

The effectiveness of section 702 in thwarting international terrorism or espionage is questionable. After nine years, the intelligence community has yet to document a single case in which section 702 enabled the preemption of an international terrorist act in the United States. Former National Security Agency official and renowned expert Bill Binney has opined that the NSA cannot identify future terrorism because 99.9999% of what it collects and analyzes is foreseeably irrelevant. NSA analysts are theoretically tasked with reviewing 40,000 to 50,000 questionable records each day. If section 702 is largely irrelevant to frustrating international terrorism, it amounts to a massive invasion of privacy for its own sakean illicit government objective.

The government has commonly violated section 702 surveillance limitations. Illustrative but far from exhaustive was the April 26, 2017 FISC decision authored by Judge Rosemary Collyer sharply rebuking the intelligence community for illegal surveillance of American citizens over a five-year period which raised very serious constitutional questions. These chronic violations also argue against any permanent extension of section 702.

Finally, the section seemingly authorizes dragnet, warrantless interceptions and searches of the contents of the international communications of American citizens in violation of the Fourth Amendment. The statute does not require any suspicion that citizens whose communications are seized and searched are implicated in international terrorism, espionage, or other crime as a predicate for invading their communications privacy.

The United States Supreme Court has yet to address the constitutionality of section 702. Congress should refrain from giving it permanent life unless and until it receives the Courts gives imprimatur. Caution is the order of the day when skating close to the Constitutions edge.

In sum, every dictate of prudence favors a congressional four-year sunset if it decides to extend section 702 beyond December 31, 2017. That would compel a fresh and more informed congressional examination of the statute after the 2020 presidential election.

In a major development in the ongoing effort to restore the Second Amendment in Washington, D.C., the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit issued an opinion on Tuesday that would effectively require D.C. officials to make concealed carry licenses available on a shall-issue basis.

The courts decision comes in the combined cases of Wrenn v. D.C. and Grace v. D.C.

Following the landmark case of District of Columbia v. Heller, which recognized a Second Amendment right to have operable handguns in the home for self-defense, the District retaliated by banning carrying of firearms outside the home.

A lower federal court found D.C.s carry ban also violated the Second Amendment, but rather than comply with that ruling, D.C. created a sham system for concealed carry permits that requires applicants to show a good or proper reason for needing to carry a concealed handgun. This includes a special need for self-protection distinguishable from the general community, job duties requiring the transport of large amounts of cash or valuables, or the need to protect a close relative who cannot provide for his or her own special self-defense needs. Practically speaking, this means the vast majority of law-abiding people who simply want to carry a handgun for self-dense in ordinary circumstances are automatically disqualified.

Licensed concealed carry, moreover, is the only option for ordinary people to lawfully carry a loaded, accessible firearm for self-defense outside the persons home or business in D.C., so in effect the ban on carry already found unconstitutional remains.

Wrenn and Grace therefore presented the appellate court with the questions of whether the Second Amendments right to bear arms for self-defense extends beyond the home and, if so, whether District officials could nevertheless deny that right to all but a select, hand-picked few. The courts answer to those questions was a resounding yes and no, respectively.

The D.C. Circuit analogized the Districts current concealed carry licensing regime to the ban on keeping handguns at issue in Heller. The issue, the court stated, is not whether a few select people could exercise the right but whether it was available to responsible, law-abiding people in ordinary circumstances.Because the court found that D.C.s good or proper reason requirement was effectively a ban on bearing arms by people entitled to Second Amendment protection, it declared the requirement invalid and barred its enforcement.

The upshot of this decision is that D.C. must now issue concealed carry licenses to all otherwise eligible applicants, i.e., those who pass the Districts background check and training requirements and pay the applicable fees. Unfortunately, the courts order is effectively on hold while District officials determine their next legal move. That could mean asking for a rehearing before the full D.C. Circuit or appealing directly to the U.S. Supreme Court.

How the District will proceed remains to be seen, but in the meantime, your NRAs efforts in the Grace case have for now contributed to winning a vital battle in the continuing conflict over the right to keep and bear arms in the seat of the nations government. AMD backs off cryptocurrency even as demand grows – CIO Dive

AMD's CEO said Wednesday that the company does not consider cryptocurrency a long-term growth driver, despite rising demand, according to Business Insider. The company will continue to focus on gaming, its bread and butter.

Lisa Su, CEO of AMD, made the remarks following the release of the company's earnings report. AMD reported higher than expected earnings and revenue, pushing the company's stock up 8%.

Su said the company would "continue to watch the developments around the blockchain technologies as they go forward," but will not include cryptocurrency in their forecast.

Companies like IBM and Microsoft have made big leaps into the cryptocurrency space, so it's surprising to see AMD backing off a bit.

Demand for chips that can be used to help with complex blockchain computing processes are on the rise, so the company could be bypassing a lucrative opportunity.The company's biggest challenger,Nvidia, is building a chip for computers that can be used in cryptocurrencynetworks.

AMD's cautious approach is fueled in part by some of the negative connections to blockchain technology. AMD may simply be trying to distance itself from any negative connotations until the dust settles.

With Bitcoin and the blockchain, life continues to be damned if you do and damned if you dont. On August 1, if you hold any bitcoin, then youll receive the equivalent in a new cryptocurrency called Bitcoin Cash. The reason why is messy, but you can think of it as a kind of dividend.

Theres a catch. If your Bitcoin is held on certain platforms, including the largest one, Coinbase, then you wont receive your due. Thats because for reasons political or technological, those platforms are automatically rejecting the new currency. (Although Coinbase noted in a tweet yesterday that theres a possibility it will change its mind.)

The rational thing to do then if you own Bitcoin on one of those platforms is to move your funds elsewhere, claim your free Bitcoin cash on August 1, and then move back when things have settled down. Thats the common refrain youll find online, but because this is the cryptosphere were talking about, that refrain needs to come with a fat warning sticker.

Consider Coinbase. For many years its been the de facto platform for less techy folks to buy and store bitcoin. Coinbases easy-to-use design and PayPal-like features stand in contrast to the tech horror that is the rest of the industry. Thats a problem.

If Coinbase is all you know, then youre not equipped to beam your money to another platform or to a private wallet; its too different and too much can go wrong.

Use a malicious website to generate your private key? Your funds vanish. Hash a bad password? Your funds vanish. Copy and paste the wrong hash? Your funds vanish. Choose the wrong exchange? Your funds vanish. Save your key on a malware-infected computer? Your funds vanish. Store your key on a sheet of paper that your roommate throws away? Your funds vanish.

The list is endless and many items apply even to sophisticated investors. The point is that moving large sums of cryptocurrency from one place to another has non-zero risk attached and may lead to catastrophic loss.

Yet, ignoring the free Bitcoin cash distribution is also a bad option. Bitcoin cash will have value, maybe small, but also maybe very large. You never know in this space and if the creation of Bitcoin cash leads to a devaluation in regular Bitcoin, then staying put means taking an automatic loss.

Theres no good move here and this situation is representative of the whole space, one where tech gimmicks continue to trump basic safety and accessibility.

Why the feds took down one of Bitcoin’s largest exchanges – The Verge

This week, one of Bitcoins largest and most notorious coin exchanges was brought down by law enforcement and police and prosecutors are now beginning to explain why. On Thursday, the Department of Justice unsealed an indictment against Alexander Vinnik thought to be the operator, or one of the operators of Bitcoin exchange BTC-e charging him with 21 counts of money laundering and other related financial crimes. The counts range from operating an unlicensed money transmittal business to a variety of money laundering charges, including laundering associated with ransomware payouts and a theft from the now-defunct Mt Gox exchange. More generally, the indictment paints BTC-e as a hub of criminal activity, laundering the proceeds of everything from drug trafficking to ransomware attacks.

As some suspected, Vinniks alleged crimes go beyond just operating the exchange. Feds believe he played a role in the theft of more 800,000 bitcoin about $400 million at the time from Mt. Gox, a staggering loss that ultimately shuttered the exchange. According to the indictment, 530,000 of those bitcoin ended up passing through wallets controlled by or associated with Vinnik, although his role in the larger scheme remains unclear.

Vinniks alleged crimes go beyond just operating a Bitcoin exchange

Vinnik himself is in custody, arrested while on vacation in Greece, but the Bitcoin world is still sorting through the larger implications of his arrest. BTC-e was one of the last major exchanges outside the reach of conventional finance, and now that its gone, its unclear what might replace it. There are many legitimate uses of Bitcoin, but Bitcoin transactions have also become essential for online crime whether its ransomware or Silk-Road-style online marketplaces. There will continue to be demand for exchanges like BTC-e, and with feds directly targeting exchanges that dont play by the book, the split between the two halves of Bitcoin is becoming starker and starker.

BTC-e, founded in 2011, always stood out as an anomaly among the major Bitcoin exchanges. Even a cursory look at BTC-e flagged it as a little strange. Their exchange prices always seemed weird and out of line with every other exchange, and I had wondered why, Matthew Green, a professor at Johns Hopkins University told The Verge in an email.

Nicholas Weaver wrote at Lawfare that BTC-e was noted for its sketchy ownership and control. The exchange was supposedly located in Eastern Europe, but there were no clues as to who ran it until now.

300,000 bitcoin from Mt. Gox went to wallets tied to BTC-e administrative accounts

But the big surprise in the indictment is how closely tied BTC-e is to a massive theft at Mt. Gox, one that eventually bankrupted the exchange in 2014. Founded in 2010, Mt. Gox dominated the Bitcoin world for years, at one point processing 80 percent of all bitcoin-to-currency transactions. Mt. Gox first suffered a multimillion-dollar theft in June 2011. When the exchange collapsed in 2014, the equivalent of nearly half a billion dollars was unaccounted for.

On Wednesday, in the wake of the arrest of Vinnik, WizSec published a blogpost presenting the findings of an investigation into the Mt. Gox thefts that they have apparently been preparing for years. According to WizSec, the Mt. Gox hot wallet private keys were stolen sometime in 2011, and the hacker (or multiple hackers) continued to steal bitcoin through 2012 and 2013. The bitcoin were laundered through wallets controlled by Alexander Vinnik. The indictment claims that 300,000 bitcoin were stolen from Mt. Gox went directly to three connected BTC-e accounts directly linked to BTC-e administrative accounts that only BTC-e admins and operators could have had access to. At least one of the accounts under the name Vamnedam was controlled by Vinnik and others known and unknown. (The others known are either not named in the indictment or have been redacted from the published document.)

Many of the charges allege more straightforward money laundering

More bitcoin from the theft were sent to other Mt. Gox wallets and wallets at a third exchange the now-defunct Tradehill, which operated out of San Francisco, California. From there, they eventually ended up at BTC-e, in an account that was directly controlled by Vinnik.

WizSec also claims that the wallets that laundered Mt. Gox coins also handled coins stolen from Bitcoinica, Bitfloor and several other thefts from back in 2011 and 2012.

Its not clear whether Vinnik was directly involved in the Mt. Gox theft, or how close he is to any of those previous thefts, or even the CryptoWall ransomware hackers whose funds he is accused of laundering. But when it comes to Mt. Gox, at least, BTC-es proximity to the theft is fairly suspicious.

While the Mt. Gox allegations are the most eye-catching, many of the charges that brought down BTC-e allege more straightforward money laundering. The very first count listed in the indictment is for operating an unlicensed money-transmitting business: a criminal charge based on failing to register with FinCEN, an intelligence network thats mandatory for all financial companies dealing with US customers.

Participating in FinCEN comes with a range of requirements, from registration to internal anti-money laundering programs. Since 2013, its been clear that Bitcoin exchanges had to follow those same rules, and for the most part, exchanges have complied and prosecutors havent been shy about filing charges against services that dont. In recent years, BTC-e has been the largest Bitcoin exchange not registered with FinCEN, a distinction that made it an obvious target for law enforcement, even without Vinniks alleged Mt. Gox involvement.

Anybody who thought about this for a second understood that law enforcement was working on a case against BTC-e, said Jerry Brito, executive director of Coin Center. The question was just whether the government would catch them.

Where other counts in the indictment focus on money transfers linked to theft and ransomware, the first two operation of an unlicensed money transmitter and conspiracy to commit money-laundering focus on the technological capabilities of BTC-e itself, claiming that the exchange had a criminal design.

BTC-es system was designed so that criminals could accomplish financial transactions with anonymity and thereby avoid apprehension by law enforcement or seizure of funds, the indictment says, pointing out that BTC-e only required a username, password, and an email address, unlike legitimate payment processors or digital currency exchangers. The indictment also points to suspicious usernames like ISIS, CocaineCowboys, blackhathackers, dzkillerhacker, and hacker4hire as additional support for the money-laundering allegations.

The language in the indictment about BTC-es criminal design mimics the indictment against Liberty Reserve an anonymous currency service taken down by law enforcement in 2013 which also accused the online exchange of having a criminal design and a system designed so that criminals could effect financial transactions under multiple layers of anonymity. (The Liberty Reserve indictment also took the time to point out that account names on the site included Russia Hackers and Hacker Accounts.)

BTC-es website claimed that they required customers to provide proof of identity namely, a scanned ID card and a scanned utility bill or bank statement and forbid any US customers, letting them off the hook for FinCEN registration. But neither turned out to be true, according to the indictment.

Exchanges will go one of two ways. Either theyll clean up their act... or theyll go fully underground.

Now that BTC-e is down for good, it could have a profound impact on the criminal ecosystem more broadly. BTC-e handled about 5 percent of total Bitcoin transactions, but recent research found that as much as 95 percent of ransomware cashouts happened through the platform. With most comparably sized exchanges already registered under FinCEN, the takedown could make it both harder and riskier for criminals to cash out something law enforcement seems to be counting on. In the same Lawfare piece, Weaver says he thinks taking down BTC-e will probably prove more important than the AlphaBay and Hansa takedowns in fighting online crime.

For Bitcoiners less invested in law enforcements war on dark web marketplaces, the lesson is a more ambiguous one. Cornell professor Emin Gun Sirer says the focus on FinCEN compliance could lead to a lasting split in Bitcoin markets, as exchanges face the choice of whether to comply with US government demands.

Exchanges will go one of two ways, Sirer says. Either they will clean their act, by first shopping for the most lenient jurisdictions and complying with relevant KYC/AML laws, or they'll go fully underground, and operate with no rules, behind Tor and other anonymous communication technologies. The most colorful drama ahead will involve exchanges, such as Bitfinex, that operate in the gray zone, where they seem to neither comply with relevant laws nor go fully underground.

For a technology with a surrounding community built on libertarian ideas, that may be a difficult pill to swallow. But as the past week has made clear, those that dont will be taking a very serious risk.

Fork Watch: ‘Bitcoin Cash’ Support Grows as August 1 Draws Near – Bitcoin News (press release)

The user-activated hard fork (UAHF) on the Bitcoin network is looming around the corner. Bitcoin Cash (BCC; BCH) is slated to break away as a new fork from the Bitcoin blockchain on August 1 at9:20PM JST or 12:20PM UTC.

Multiple bitcoin exchanges have signaled support for Bitcoin Cash. This news comes alongside the inevitability that a UAHF event will occur.

Last week, Bitcoin.com detailed many of the exchanges and platforms that will be rejecting Bitcoin Cash (BCC), but now more appear to be settling into the idea that it will exist as a legitimate digital token. At the time of writing, futures of BCC are being traded on Viabtcs exchange for roughly $390.

Kraken

The large bitcoin exchange Kraken made an announcement yesterday in support of Bitcoin Cash. They said they will be providing users with the ability to trade it on their platform. They pledged to credit clients with an equivalent amount of Bitcoin Cash based on their current holdings of bitcoin.

Although the Bitcoin Cash fork is expected to be minor, it may be successful. Provided that unforeseen circumstances do not make it prohibitively unsafe or difficult for us to do so, Kraken will support Bitcoin Cash

However, Kraken warned margin traders on their platform to be very cautious across the fork. They were told to either greatly reduce their position or cease margin trading altogether to ensure a smooth transition. In the least, they should set stops and not rely on Kraken to function optimally while the fork is in progress.

Bitfinex

The bitcoin exchange platform Bitfinex also announced they would be supporting bitcoin cash. They plan on providing an amount of bitcoin cash tokens equivalent to that of bitcoin in their customers wallets.

They said, A minority of Bitcoin miners will be forking on August 1st, 2017 to create a newchain calledBitcoin Cash. The fork does not impact Bitcoin balances, but it creates a new token. At the time of the fork, all Bitcoin addresses holding a balance will automatically have equivalent balances in Bitcoin Cash.

The company, however, mentioned they will not be using BCC for the bitcoin cash ticker symbol. They said it is already in useon their platform. Instead, they will use BCH. The company will distribute BCH tokens with the UTC timestamp of the first forking block, which will occur August 1. Their page contains details on how they plan on ironing out the kinks and managing technical issues.

Besides exchanges, major hardware wallets manufacturers are also supporting Bitcoin Cash. Both Trezor and Ledger have provided details on securing bitcoin cash in their wallets when the fork occurs.

Trezor wallet said they can safely adopt bitcoin cash functionality with their wallets sincethe currency supports replay attack protection. They said, Bitcoin Cash has implemented the necessary protection againstreplay attacks, meaning Trezor can support the currency safely. We will provide an interface, accessible from Trezor Wallet, where you can access and safely claim your Bitcoin Cash coins. You will be prompted by Trezor Wallet once you select Bitcoin Cash in the currency selector.

As a result of the in-built replay attack protection, Ledger will also provide full functionality for bitcoin cash via their wallets. They say users will be able to gain access to bitcoin cash after the fork by using a special tool. They said users could view bitcoin cash currency as free air-dropped money.

As a result, all bitcoin holders will be granted a new duplicated Bitcoin Cash balance (literally airdropped free money) if the fork activatesthis post and the follow ups will describe how you can best secure this new balance, then decide to trade it, hold it or sell it as you wish.

Both hardware wallet companies wrote details on their page explaining how to respond to the fork and gain access to freshly minted bitcoin cash.

Several other exchanges and wallet providers are also signaling their support for the hard-forked token. Exchanges include Quoinexchange, Viabtc, Kcoin, Btcbox, Bithumb, Kex, Mercury Cash, Huobi,Quadrigacx, Toubi, Korbit, Bittrex, and Btcpop. Wallet providers who are adopting Bitcoin Cash include, Bitcoin ABC, Bitcoinclassic, Electrum Cash, and btc.com.

The exchange Quoinexchange said, We have also received many inquiries regarding BCC(Bitcoin Cash) crypto currency. These announcements seem to suggest stronger community backing for the fork token. It does not look like the currency will die immediately in the rip and roar of the fork. The future of the digital asset remains uncertain, for sure.

NASA Scientists: A Lot More Dangerous Comets Exist Than We Thought – The Daily Caller

NASA scientists say a new study proves there are seven times as many big and potentially dangerous comets flying through deep space than previously thought.

The study analyzed data from the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) spacecraft that tracks long-period comets (LPCs) that take at least 200 years to orbit around the sun. WISE data showed far more LPCs that potentially pose a serious impact risk to Earth.

Previously the sense was that for every 100 asteroid impacts (of all sizes) we get 1 comet impact, Dr. Joseph A. Nuth, a senior asteroid scientist at NASAs Goddard Space Flight Center, told The Daily Caller News Foundation. Now that we know there are more LPCs for every 100 asteroid impacts we might get 5 comet impacts.

Astronomers previously gave broad estimates of the number of LPCs in the solar system, but researchers didnt have a good way to detect them since they were obscured by clouds of gas and dust.

Gravitational forces can move LPCs back into the inner solar system, potentially putting them on a collision course with Earth. An LPC impact would be devastating.

A comet impact is, on average, much more devastating than an asteroid impact, Nuth said. Think BBs and Bullets vs. Howitzers and Nukes.

Comets are rarer than asteroids, but can carry more than 100 times the energy of a typical asteroid. An LPC would likely impact Earth at a much higher velocity than other space objects.

[A] higher velocity impact would release more energy and therefore would be worse, Paul Chodas, manager of the Center for Near-Earth Object Studies at NASAs Jet Propulsion Laboratory, told TheDCNF. This is offset somewhat by the fact that comets are less dense than asteroids: the energy release of a comet impact would be less than that of a similarly sized asteroid impact if the velocities were the same.

The study also determined that LPCs are more dangerous than more conventional asteroids or comets because they are twice the size on average.

Yes, a body twice the size has eight times the mass of a smaller body and therefore delivers eight times the kinetic energy if all other factors are equal, Nuth said. The impact energy is proportional to the velocity squared. So a comet moving three times the average asteroid velocity would impact with nine times the energy.

The potential impact of a long-period comet would be more hazardous than that of a Jupiter family comet both because the long-period comets are more likely to be larger, and because they follow orbits that would impact at higher velocities, Chodas said.

The final reason researchers thinkLPCs are dangerous is their relative stealthiness compared to other space rocks. Detecting an LPC on a collusion course with Earth would be more difficult thatspottinga more conventional near-Earth asteroid.

The larger distance of comets, and the long orbital periods affect the warning time more than higher velocities: the generally larger distance of comets make the tracking observations less effective (since they are angular measurements), and the longer orbital periods mean that we dont have multiple opportunities to see these objects at closer ranges, Chodas said.The distance at which a comet is discovered depends largely on the activity level of the comet.

The difficulties inherent in detecting LPCs mean that NASA would likely have far less warning that one was on a collision course with Earth. The comet Siding Spring was detected on a trajectory that would strike the planet Mars in October of 2014, just 22 months after its discovery.

Since Comet Siding Spring was quite active, it was discovered at a distance of 7 AU, about two years before it passed very close to Mars, Chodas said. A less active long-period comet might be discovered only a year before entering the inner Solar System. Establishing a precise trajectory for the comet would be challenging and likely take several months, so the warning time would likely be less than a year.

Twenty-twomonths warning is far less than NASA scientists think theyd need to intercept an incoming comet.The best way to stop an asteroid or comet from hitting the Earth on such short notice may be to send a spacecraft up to intercept it. But even then, NASA researchers think they would need at least five years to construct a reliable spacecraft and man it.

The case of Siding Spring is a reasonable example: much less than 5 years is a good guess, Nuth said. Siding Spring came in from the celestial pole and was not spotted until it began to exhibit a coma. A larger body would show a coma at similar distances.

Earth is just as vulnerable to LPCs and other space rocks as Mars nearly was to the Siding Spring Comet. Earths closer proximity to the Sun wouldnt make it easier to detect a long-period comet on a collision course, according to NASA researchers.

The discovery time is dictated mostly by the comets distance from the Sun and how active the comet is, Chodas said. If Comet Siding Spring were headed for an encounter with Earth, its discovery time would be the same.

Amherst Baseball July Classic: Comets walks help St. Ignatius get … – Chronicle Telegram

AMHERST For four innings Friday, Amherst senior Anthony Berrios was in control, working out of jams and keeping the potent St. Ignatius offense off the board.

Then that control was gone.

The Wildcats scored five runs in the fifth on one hit and five walks to roll to a 10-1 win over the Comets in the Amherst Summer Baseball Classic.

We talk all the time about pressuring other teams and forcing them to make plays, St. Ignatius coach Brad Ganor said. You dont draw it up to score five runs in an inning on one hit but Ill take it. It was a well-played game. It gives us energy together and play well one final time before we get into our offseason program. If we do well here it makes the offseason that much easier.

Berrios worked out of trouble in the third and fourth innings, both times getting strikeouts to end threats with runners in scoring position. He ran out of luck in the fifth inning.

After allowing a leadoff single to shortstop A.J. Gaich, Berrios committed a throwing error to put runners on second and third. Berrios then walked the next four hitters before giving way to relievers Dylan McCrann and Kyle Dalzell.

I thought Anthony pitched really well, Amherst coach Matt Rositano said. Those first four innings he was lights out. He was around the plate all night. We tried to give him a chance to work out of trouble in the fifth but it just kind of snowballed on him.

With the win, St. Ignatius (2-0) earned a trip to Sundays semifinals. Amherst (0-2) will need to beat Medina today then await the results of the Keystone-Canal Fulton Northwest game to see if it makes it to the semifinals. Medina beat Willoughby South 4-0 in Fridays other game.

Austin Jones, an Amherst resident and St. Ignatius junior, was a key for the Wildcats, driving in the games first run with bases-loaded walk and going 3-for-4 with a run scored and a pair of RBIs.

The Comets scored their only run in the bottom of the fifth when Christian Velez hit a one-out single to center field, advanced to second on a balk and scored on T.J. Statons single.

St. Ignatius squashed any hope of an Amherst comeback when it took advantage of three Comets errors to score five more runs in the seventh inning.

Gaich had the big hit, a two-run double to deep left field.

The biggest thing I want to get out of these games this week is to get some of my younger guys some action, Rositano said. We had four sophomores playing today. They see the speed of the game, the intensity of the game and its something they can build on.

Comets catcher Eric Ritter was 2-for-3 with singles to left field his first two at-bats. Gaich also had three hits for the Wildcats.

It was fun having a chance to come back and compete against the kids I grew up with and played baseball with, Jones said. We had a good team effort and it was a good learning experience for us.

Comets’ youth, high school squads converge – Stanly News & Press

North Stanly High School hosted its third annual community night on Tuesday at the Comets home stadium in New London.

North Stanly welcomed the South Rowan Raiders and the East Montgomery Eagles for the 7-on-7 scrimmage this year.

The 7-on-7 scrimmage event allowed coaches to assess their teams strengths and weaknesses for the upcoming season. The noncontact games highlighted the teams passing skills most of all.

On the field I saw three teams that were getting ready for the season, said North head coach Scott Crisco of the scrimmages. This is our last chance to really work on our passing game.

David Yow, head coach of South Rowan, noted the event allowed him to test out his three potential starting quarterbacks against strong competition.

It was very well ran, said Yow. We got a lot of good competition so that was something we were looking forward to.

Anytime we get a chance to compete against other people we can see what we need to work on, he added.

While coaches took notes for the upcoming season, the event also, as the name suggests, provided an outing to foster the community Comet pride.

I saw a lot of community involvement (tonight), a lot of the youth here which is why we put this on. For our football youth, said Crisco.

The community night brings together Comets of all ages. The event invites the North Stanly youth football team and cheerleaders out to meet their high school counterparts.

What we are trying to do is get our youth league involved with our high school, said Todd Helms, president of youth football and defensive coach for the high school team. We feel like if we can establish a good foundation from the youth league, our high school will benefit.

He shares his presidential duties with his wife, Jennie.

Jennie noted more than 50 youth football players and cheerleaders attended on Tuesday to meet and greet with the high school players and cheerleading squad.

The youth loves it and we had good numbers come out, said Jennie Helms. They all get their little T-shirts signed. So theyre very excited about it.

Investing time with events for the youth, such as community night and the youth football minicamp last week, has proved successful in bringing more youth to the programs.

We also see a lot of people from outside our area trying to get into our district because of how were running it, said Todd Helms. As long as were producing a beneficial, positive attitude then everybody comes this way.

In the last few years the youth leagues have blossomed as a reaction to how the programs are run, Todd Helms said.

Our cheer has absolutely exploded, he said. Several years ago cheer was really down so weve tried to merge that back together and its just taken off.

The youth programs range from rising kindergarteners to sixth-graders. According to Todd Helms, the youth football coaches begin introducing the youth to the same plays the high school uses, establishing a strong foundation at a younger age.

Even our youth league coaches are running the same offenses and defenses that were running so that whenever they get to the high school level the terminology is already there, he said.

The North Stanly youth football and cheerleading hosted its second annual powderpuff game on Saturday night at the high school stadium. Look for more coverage of the game in a future edition of the SNAP.

TRAVEL: Climate concerns fuel more travel to fragile corners of the world – Duluth News Tribune

Her bridal beauty business, like the others at the pop-up, represents the economic link between protecting the mangroves as nurseries of the island's fish stocks, tsunami buffers and CO2 sinks and sustaining communities dependent on them.

"We can't do mangrove conservation without the people," said Anuradha "Anu" Wickramasinghe, co-founder of Sudeesa, a Sri Lanka nonprofit advocating for small-scale fishing and farming operations. It was his idea to provide business training and $100 micro-loans to some of the poorest women in coastal fishing communities in exchange for their protection of the vital ecosystem, applying a social fix to an environmental problem caused by logging, mass prawn farming and, in the northern areas, civil war. "They get training from us and seed money from Seacology."

This spring, I joined Seacology, the California-based environmental nonprofit, on one of its tours that showcase its projects. Mangrove restoration in Sri Lanka is its largest ever, with the organization donating $5 million over five years to protect more than 21,000 acres of coastal mangroves by bringing the micro-loan program to 15,000 rural women. Meeting the program's budding entrepreneurs and exploring solutions to environmental challenges with field experts were the highlights of an itinerary also filled with more tourist-friendly activities, like a walking tour of Colombo, visits to Hindu and Buddhist temples, and meals both traditional and trendy.

From the broken Paris climate pact to the collapsing ice shelf in Antarctica, climate issues have dominated recent headlines. Providing access to those front lines, the travel industry has mirrored eco-concerns with the growth of climate-focused trips.

Many of these trips are concentrated at the poles. In Greenland, for example, the number of tourists rose almost 24 percent in 2015. Last year, tourism grew by nearly 10 percent more than double the global average. American travelers represented one-third of the 34,539 travelers who visited Antarctica this past winter, according to the International Association of Antarctica Tour Operators, by far the largest contingent (Chinese travelers come in second at 12 percent).

"The Arctic and the Antarctic are changing in dramatic ways, more so than anywhere on Earth," said Sven Lindblad, founder and CEO of Lindblad Expeditions, the pioneer of cruise travel to Antarctica and the Galapagos. "Clearly, there is a greater sense of urgency and interest on the part of travelers to see and understand these environments."

The travel industry contributes to carbon emissions, of course, but tour operators argue that exposure to threatened regions converts the curious to conservation. As oceanographer Jacques Cousteau once said, "People protect what they love."

"Our most significant contribution to the realm of sustainability is utilizing the experiences our travelers are having as 'Aha!' moments to come back and do more to protect the planet and our species,'" said Ted Martens, vice president of marketing and sustainability at Natural Habitat Adventures, a wildlife-focused tour company that offsets the carbon emissions of its operations by funding green technology projects.

Natural Habitat runs trips in partnership with the World Wildlife Fund that have generated $10 million since 2003 for WWF programs confronting deforestation in the Amazon and preserving orangutan habitats in Borneo, among others. Natural Habitat's six-day trips to see polar bears in Canada cost $6,195 (all rates are per person).

With World Wildlife Fund-Canada, Adventure Canada is offering an "Arctic Safari" that explores Greenland's communities and ice fjords, from $5,995.

Some operators encourage citizen scientists to help researchers with their work. The nonprofit EarthWatch Institute runs "Climate Change at the Arctic's Edge" trips, in which travelers take water and tree core samples to measure the health of animals and plants (from $2,014 for seven days). EarthWatch Institute also offers teen-only departures.

Over the next two summers, Poseidon Expeditions will run trips to the North Pole featuring a citizen science program to collect data on sea ice thickness and melting (from $6,960 for 10 days). Data from the operator's first citizen science launch, in 2015, is already being used by the Arctic Research Consortium of the United States' Sea Ice Prediction Network.

Lindblad is celebrating its 50th anniversary in the Galapagos this summer with cruises aboard the 96-passenger National Geographic Endeavor II (10 days from $6,960) and the new National Geographic Global Explorers Program. The latter's educational activities include collecting plankton, recording wildlife sightings and earning an inflatable Zodiac boat "driver's license."

During the 2017/2018 Antarctic travel season, Abercrombie & Kent's Classic Antarctica departure Jan. 6 is devoted to "Understanding Climate Change" and features noted Antarctic researcher Dr. James McClintock (from $13,495 for 12 days).

Naturalist Richard Polatty, a veteran of 60 trips to Antarctica and guide for International Nature and Cultural Adventures (from $10,995 for 11 days), views familiarity as a source of support for the region.

"Antarctica is the author of global climate in some ways and is a very sensitive indicator of global climate change," he said.

But it is felt as far away as Sri Lanka, where fishermen in the north say the tides have changed in the past two years, and at least 50 feet of new mangroves planted near Jaffna stand in parched dirt instead of being flooded by water. With the assistance of the navy, Sudeesa continues to plant seedlings with the goal of repopulating the sea with fish and empowering women to be protectors of the coastal forests by ensuring a family income.

"We take care of the mothers, who will pass on their knowledge to their children," said Sudeesa's Anu as we drove down a sand road separating woven fishing huts from the sparkling turquoise sea on a community-based tour of the island better known for luxury resorts. "To the children we say, 'This is your wealth.'"

US gets Canadian help to take on China in supercomputer race: ‘A perfect world for D-Wave’ – National Post

A new supercomputing partnership between a Canadian pioneer in quantum computers and a U.S. Department of Energy laboratory, which aims to reach exascale computing speeds within a few years, offers a glimpse of the future of ultra-fast computation, according to the scientist leading the project.

Rather than a wholesale shift from classical to quantum computing as when internal combustion engines replaced steam power the future of supercomputing is likely to involve hybrid strategies, with regular digital computers augmented by other more fancy kinds: quantum computers, graphics processors like the kind that run video games, and neuromorphic machines that mimic the behaviour of the human brain.

Its a perfect world for D-Wave, said Jeff Nichols, associate laboratory director of computing and computational sciences at Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee.

I do not believe that youll ever replace all of traditional, classical computing with a quantum computer, nor will any of the other more exotic approaches replace classical computers, he said. Youre not going to carry around a quantum computer as your phone.

Burnaby, B.C.-based D-Wave Systems new deal to provide quantum computing power to accelerate Oak Ridges supercomputers also marks a key strategy in the U.S. effort to catch up to China, which has invested heavily in its push to build computers fast enough to reach the exascale, or a quintillion calculations per second. (A quintillion is a billion billion, or 1 with 18 zeroes.)

A major difference in the two countries strategies has to do with the massive energy costs of running such a fast computer, which in the case of Oak Ridges Titan machine is nine megawatts at its peak, at a cost of $9 million.

China has tried to start with the necessary hardware, then bring the energy usage and costs down. But Nichols said Oak Ridge is taking the opposite approach with the strategic placement of quantum accelerators to improve the efficiency of calculation.

In future, he said they might wish to have a quantum computer on site, tightly coupled to their supercomputer but, for the moment, D-Waves service will be provided remotely, over the internet from Canada.

The prize of an exascale computer, for both China and the U.S., would be a vastly improved ability to solve some of sciences most complex problems, such as those about climate change, genetic analysis, protein folding, earthquake prediction, the performance of the electricity grid, and cosmology problems that are too big to simply calculate by running through all the possibilities.

Many of these are what mathematicians call optimization problems, and these are what D-Waves quantum computer is best suited to solve, as they recently did, for example, in a study for Volkswagen about how to optimize traffic flow in Beijing.

The classic example of an optimization problem is of a travelling salesman who needs to visit many towns and wants to know the shortest route.

Classical computers, the kind made with silicon chips, would just calculate each trip and choose the shortest. But in this kind of problem, the number of possibilities soon grows impossibly large. To solve it classically, you would need to be calculating forever with a computer as big as the universe. To quantum computers, however, the math and logic of optimization problems look very different. They do not compute with the strict ones and zeroes of binary code, but rather with the strange quantum properties of superposition and entanglement.

A classical computer calculates with bits, which can be set two ways: one or zero. From this basic binary system, a computer can build up to all the complexities of modern computing.

A quantum computer, however, takes advantage of the strange properties of matter at the subatomic scale. Rather than bits, it calculates with qubits, or quantum bits, which are tiny, fragile physical systems sometimes etched into a chip of metal cooled to near absolute zero, or a gas held in place by a magnetic field, or a sliver of artificial diamond that can be in multiple quantum states at the same time, known as superposition. This property allows a qubit to be either one, zero, or a little bit of both at the same time, allowing for a whole new style of logic and computation.

D-Waves device uses a strategy known as quantum annealing to solve optimization problems not by brute calculation, but by exploiting quantum effects to find the likeliest candidates for solutions.

Using this style of computing to help a supercomputer skip unnecessary calculations helps Oak Ridge to keep its power costs down, while accelerating its performance, Nichols said.

The success of this approach is a key reason that D-Wave president Bo Ewald thinks the future of quantum computing will look different than the rapid expansion and constant improvement of classical computers since the mid-20th century.

He has a long history in top-level computation, for example at Los Alamos National Laboratory and as president of Cray Research, which once made supercomputers that filled a room, cost millions, and are now more or less matched by an off-the-shelf laptop.

I always knew that because of Moores Law, things were going to get faster and shrink, he said. (Moores law says the number of transistors in a computer chip doubles every two years, and it has held true for decades.) But in quantum, youre using more specialized materials, very cold superconducting materials in extreme vacuum, shielded from radio frequency.

It is a more finicky hardware, he said, so he is skeptical that we will all carry quantum computers in our pockets in the future, as we do now with classical computers such as iPhones.

So I think theres a little more challenge to think well have portable quantum computers, he said. I dont think well need them because I think theyll be ubiquitous because of the Cloud.

More than 60 US clinics have sold unproven stem cell therapies for heart failure – New York Post

Stem cell therapy isnt approved to treat heart failure in the US, but dozens of clinics nationwide advertise the treatments anyway, often charging thousands of dollars for procedures that may not be safe or effective, a new study suggests.

Researchers found 61 centers offering stem cell therapies for heart failure as of last year in the US alone, including five that claimed to have performed more than 100 procedures. Only nine centers required copies of patients medical records and just one facility said it had a board certified cardiologist on staff.

We simply do not know anything about the quality of the treatment delivered at these centers, said senior study author Dr. Paul Hauptman director of heart failure at Saint Louis University Hospital.

These centers are not regulated in any way, Hauptman said by email.

Almost 6 million Americans have heart failure, and its one of the most common reasons older adults go to the hospital, according to the American Heart Association.

It happens when the heart muscle is too weak to effectively pump enough blood through the body. Symptoms can include fatigue, weight gain from fluid retention, shortness of breath and coughing or wheezing. Medications can help strengthen the heart and minimize fluid buildup in the body.

While some experimental stem cell therapies for heart failure are currently being tested in late-stage human trials, none have won approval from the US Food and Drug Administration.

In theory, after a transplant, stem cells could permanently become part of the diseased heart and either help grow new healthy heart tissue or tell existing cells to work better, said Paul Knoepfler, a cell biology researcher at the University of California Davis School of Medicine in Sacramento who wasnt involved in the study.

Its also possible stem cells could temporarily visit the heart and stimulate a positive response in cells already there, he said.

Even though theres no conclusive proof yet that any stem cell treatments are safe and effective for heart failure, centers contacted for the study charge an average of $7,694 for each treatment using patients own stem cells and $6,038 for each procedure with donor stem cells.

In one instance, though, a clinic staff member said, If you have a million dollars to spend we will set you up with weekly infusions.

Hauptmans team had used a standard script when contacting each center, asking about the stem cell treatment itself, medical exams before and afterward and pricing.

Among the other responses they received from clinic staff were remarks such as, If you know anyone that can start an IV, a neighbor that is a nurse for example, we can send you the stem cells and that person can administer them to you and We hope you dont believe your doctor when they tell you there is nothing they can do, you were smart to call us.

None of the sites in the study discussed what methods they used to isolate or identify stem cells, though most claimed to use patients cells and 24 said they got cells from fat tissue.

Most centers claimed to deliver cells intravenously, researchers report in JAMA Internal Medicine.

This approach has been associated with complications such as stroke, in which infused cells block blood vessels in the brain, said Douglas Sipp, a researcher at RIKEN Center for Developmental Biology in Kobe, Japan, who wasnt involved in the study.

The biggest risk is that patients will waste their money, time and hopes on an unnecessary and useless invasive procedure, Sipp said by email.

If any stem cell treatment did ultimately prove safe and effective enough to win FDA approval, it would likely offer a significant improvement over the limited treatment options currently available, said Leigh Turner, a researcher at the University of Minnesota Center for Bioethics who wasnt involved in the study.

But its impossible to say what patients would get at unregulated clinics offering unapproved stem cell therapies, Turner said by email. In at least two cases unrelated to the current study, patients died after getting stem cell procedures at a clinic in Florida, and in another case at a different Florida clinic, a woman went blind, Turner noted.

Clinics marketing stem cell treatments to patients suffering from heart failure might be administering anything from slurries of mixed cells, some of which might be stem cells, to nothing more than cellular debris, Turner said. Often one can only speculate.

These were the words of Saint Ignatius of Loyola, founder of the Society of Jesus, the largest single religious order of priests and brothers in the Catholic Church.

A Spanish noble, he desired to be a knight in shining armor, but a cannon ball shattered his leg in the Battle of Pamplona in 1521. While convalescing he read the Life of Christ by Robert Saxony and a collection of the Lives of Saints.

Since these men were as human as I am, I could be as saintly as they are, was a spiritual realization that inspired him to be a religious despite family objections.

Ad majorem Dei gloriam

Be a soldier of Christ for the greater glory of God, was his resolve when he regained his health.

After a general confession in the Benedictine Abbey in Montserrat, Spain, he stripped off his richly garments and gave them to a beggar. Before the statue of the Blessed Mother, he offered his armor and sword on the eve of her feast in March 1522.

For almost a year, he prayed unceasingly, begged for alms and fasted.

His bedroom on the fourth floor of the family castle eloquently depicts his metanoia. The eyes of his understanding opened, he understood both spiritual and matters of faith of learning, with so great an enlightenment that everything seemed new.

Inspired beyond belief, he drafted his insights in Spiritual Exercise, better known as Ignatian Spirituality.

Since everything is within the realm of spiritual life, a Jesuit most likely will define Ignatian Spirituality as finding God in all things. Fr. David Donovan, SJ, implies since nothing can be hidden everything can be opened up before God.

Quest for God

A bridge is a structure which serves as a pathway to transport people or objects from one point to another. Religious orders, organizations and spiritual leaders offer different ways to grow spiritually. Saint Ignatius calls this a way of proceeding for people to grow in faith and find the freedom to become the person one is meant to beto love and to accept love, to make good decisions and to experience the beauty of creation and the mystery of Gods love.

The Order of the Jesuits calls this spirituality for Christian believers and seekers who desire a genuine relationship with God, the Ignatian Spirituality. Since everything is within Gods authority and competence and everything affect mans relationship with God, Ignatian Spirituality is about finding the true God in all things and everyone.

This is the greatest adventure in life for our hearts are restless until it rests in you, according to Saint Augustine.

In Friendship Like No Other, Fr. William A. Barry, SJ, recommends that the faithful need to relate to God to mature in faith.

Man in the modern world

The Pastoral Constitution of the Church in the Modern World states: Mans dignity demands that he acts according to a knowing and free choice. Thus, choice is prompted within or motivated from external pressure.

Mans dignity demands he acts with a knowing and free choice. But worldliness is an unsurmountable barricade to moral choice since the dawn of civilization. In a sensual world, the trappings of pleasure, power, prestige and pesos are benchmarks of a good life. These affect, to unprecedented degree, mans disordered affections. Needs are relegated to the background, only wants prevail often in the pyramid of preferences.

To live simply is inward mobility in a consumer society. For status have symbols, making it difficult to regulate desires when aiming for upward scales in the art of living.

Ignatian Spirituality then is about freedom and detachment, God in his goodness gifted man freedom to will.

The Vatican says, Only in freedom can man direct himself toward goodnessauthentic freedom is an exceptional sign of the divine image within man.

Conquer oneself and regulate ones lifethat no decision is made under the influence of any inordinate attachment.

Saint Ignatiuss feast day is celebrated annually on July 31.

(NASA) After a six-hour spaceflight, NASA astronaut Randy Bresnik, Sergey Ryazanskiy of Roscosmos and Paolo Nespoli of ESA (European Space Agency) arrived at the International Space Station at 5:54 p.m. EDT Friday to continue important scientific research in the orbiting laboratory.

The three crewmates launched aboard the Soyuz MS-05 spacecraft from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan at 11:41 a.m. (9:41 p.m. Baikonur time), orbited Earth four times, and docked at the space station.

Following standard pressurization and leak checks, the hatches between the spacecraft and station will be opened.

The arrival of Bresnik, Ryazanskiy and Nespoli restored the stations crew to six people, which includes Expedition 52 Commander Fyodor Yurchikhin of Roscosmos and Flight Engineers Peggy Whitson and Jack Fischer of NASA. The new Expedition 52 crew members will spend more than four months conducting approximately 250 science investigations in fields such as biology, Earth science, human research, physical sciences and technology development.

The newly-expanded Expedition 52 crew soon will conduct new science investigations arriving on SpaceXs 12th NASA-contracted commercial resupply mission targeted to launch in August.

Investigations the crew will work on include a study developed by the Michael J. Fox Foundation of the pathology of Parkinsons disease to aid in the development of therapies for patients on Earth.

The crew will use the special nature of microgravity in a new lung tissue study to advance understanding of how stem cells work and pave the way for further use of the microgravity environment in stem cell research.

Expedition astronauts also will assemble and deploy a microsatellite investigation seeking to validate the concept of using microsatellites in low-Earth orbit to support critical operations, such as providing lower-cost Earth imagery in time-sensitive situations such as tracking severe weather and detecting natural disasters.

During their expedition, the crew members also are scheduled to receive an Orbital ATK Cygnus spacecraft launched from NASAs Wallops Flight Facility in Virginia and a Russian Progress resupply mission, each delivering several tons of food, fuel, supplies and research such as an investigation to demonstrate the merits of manufacturing fiber optic filaments in microgravity.

Whitson, Fischer and Yurchikhin are scheduled to remain aboard the station until September. Shortly after their departure, NASA astronauts Mark Vande Hei and Joseph Acaba and Russian cosmonaut Alexander Misurkin will join the Expedition 53 crew. Bresnik, Ryazanskiy and Nespoli are scheduled to return in December.

For more than 16 years, humans have lived and worked continuously aboard the International Space Station, advancing scientific knowledge and demonstrating new technologies, making research breakthroughs not possible on Earth that will enable long-duration human and robotic exploration into deep space.

A global endeavor, more than 200 people from 18 countries have visited the unique microgravity laboratory that has hosted more than 1,900 research investigations from researchers in more than 95 countries.

NASA Finds Moon of Saturn Has Chemical That Could Form ‘Membranes’ – Astrobiology Magazine (registration)

NASA scientists have definitively detected the chemical acrylonitrile in the atmosphere of Saturns moon Titan, a place that has long intrigued scientists investigating the chemical precursors of life.

On Earth, acrylonitrile, also known as vinyl cyanide, is useful in the manufacture of plastics. Under the harsh conditions of Saturns largest moon, this chemical is thought to be capable of forming stable, flexible structures similar to cell membranes. Other researchers have previously suggested that acrylonitrile is an ingredient of Titans atmosphere, but they did not report an unambiguous detection of the chemical in the smorgasbord of organic, or carbon-rich, molecules found there.

Now, NASA researchers have identified the chemical fingerprint of acrylonitrile in Titan data collected by the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) in Chile. The team found large quantities of the chemical on Titan, most likely in the stratosphere the hazy part of the atmosphere that gives this moon its brownish-orange color.

We found convincing evidence that acrylonitrile is present in Titans atmosphere, and we think a significant supply of this raw material reaches the surface, said Maureen Palmer, a researcher with the Goddard Center for Astrobiology at NASAs Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, and lead author of a July 28, 2017, paper in Science Advances.

The cells of Earths plants and animals would not hold up well on Titan, where surface temperatures average minus 290 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 179 degrees Celsius), and lakes brim with liquid methane.

In 2015, university scientists tackled the question of whether any organic molecules likely to be on Titan could, under such inhospitable conditions, form structures similar to the lipid bilayers of living cells on Earth. Thin and flexible, the lipid bilayer is the main component of the cell membrane, which separates the inside of a cell from the outside world. This team identified acrylonitrile as the best candidate.

Those researchers proposed that acrylonitrile molecules could come together as a sheet of material similar to a cell membrane. The sheet could form a hollow, microscopic sphere that they dubbed an azotosome. This sphere could serve as a tiny storage and transport container, much like the spheres that lipid bilayers can form.

The ability to form a stable membrane to separate the internal environment from the external one is important because it provides a means to contain chemicals long enough to allow them to interact, said Michael Mumma, director of the Goddard Center for Astrobiology, which is funded by the NASA Astrobiology Institute. If membrane-like structures could be formed by vinyl cyanide, it would be an important step on the pathway to life on Saturns moon Titan.

The Goddard team determined that acrylonitrile is plentiful in Titans atmosphere, present at concentrations up to 2.8 parts per billion. The chemical is probably most abundant in the stratosphere, at altitudes of at least 125 miles (200 kilometers). Eventually, acrylonitrile makes its way to the cold lower atmosphere, where it condenses and rains out onto the surface.

The researchers calculated how much material could be deposited in Ligeia Mare, Titans second-largest lake, which occupies roughly the same surface area as Earths Lake Huron and Lake Michigan together. Over the lifetime of Titan, the team estimated, Ligeia Mare could have accumulated enough acrylonitrile to form about 10 million azotosomes in every milliliter, or quarter-teaspoon, of liquid. Thats compared to roughly a million bacteria per milliliter of coastal ocean water on Earth.

The key to detecting Titans acrylonitrile was to combine 11 high-resolution data sets from ALMA. The team retrieved them from an archive of observations originally intended to calibrate the amount of light being received by the telescope array.

In the combined data set, Palmer and her colleagues identified three spectral lines that match the acrylonitrile fingerprint. This finding comes a decade after other researchers inferred the presence of acrylonitrile from observations made by the mass spectrometer on NASAs Cassini spacecraft.

The detection of this elusive, astrobiologically relevant chemical is exciting for scientists who are eager to determine if life could develop on icy worlds such as Titan, said Goddard scientist Martin Cordiner, senior author on the paper. This finding adds an important piece to our understanding of the chemical complexity of the solar system.

Rest in peace iPod shuffle and Nano. The websites for the MP3 players were taken down by Apple this week in the wake of the products being discontinued.

Try searching for the products in the Apple store and youll hit dead URLs. The death of these two small players follows the official end of the iconic iPod in 2014.

Apple stated, Today, we are simplifying our iPod lineup with two models of iPod touch now with double the capacity starting at just $199 and we are discontinuing the iPod shuffle and iPod nano.

You can buy the iPod touch in with 32GB and 128GB storage options. The previous iteration of the 16GB and 64GB capacities are no longer available.

If you are desperate to get your hands on the Apple products, get down to your local BestBuy or similar before they run out. The nano didnt get much attention thrown its way over the last few years. It got a small redesign in 2012 when getting upgraded to allow Bluetooth headphones and speakers. In 2015 it got a bunch of new colorways added. The clip on iPod shuffle, promoted heavily to runners, was also mainly ignored in recent history, getting its last redesign in 2010.The end of the iPod shuffle will be missed by runners and others alike who appreciated its tough design and low price.

The iPod was launched on October 23, 2001. Steve Jobs announced the new device as a way to put 1,000 songs in your pocket.The iPod went through many iterations of nano, shuffle and touch until now. When only the touch remained, smartphones have killed the need for MP3 players of any kind.

Previously, artists would make the majority of their profits from record sales and tours were just a tool of promotion for that. Even when people stopped buying physical records, they were likely still buying the music online. A song for $1.29 on iTunes would see a chunk of that returned to the artist. In comparison a song streamed on Spotify pays the artist just $0.004891 per stream according to the website Digital Music News. This seems pretty low, but then again if you are the Candian rapper, Drake and youve been streamed more than 5.4 billion times you are doing ok.

In fact, if you are thinking of starting a music career, go with the Hip-Hop/R&B genre. Its the most commonly streamed type of music, credited with 28% of all the musicstreamed.

IGIB researchers rein in cancer cells – The Hindu

Researchers at Delhis CSIR-Institute of Genomics and Integrative Biology (CSIR-IGIB) have found the mechanism by which controlling the levels of telomerase can help in reining in the growth of cancer cells and probably prevent cancer metastasis. The results were published in the Journal of Biological Chemistry.

Unlike normal cells, most cancer cells have high levels of telomerase and this leads to more than normal length of the telomere. Telomeres protect chromosome ends somewhat like the plastic clips at the end of shoelaces that prevent fraying of the ends. While cells die when the telomere becomes shorter beyond a certain limit, in the case of cancer cells the length of the telomere is maintained thereby ensuring extended life span of the cells.

In normal cells the telomerase is kept under tight control. But in about 85% of all cancers the telomerase levels are more than normal leading to malignant transformation and aggressive metastasis in many cases. It is not clearly understood how telomerase is kept under tight control in normal cells and how the telomerase levels gets increased in cancerous cells, says Dr. Shantanu Chowdhury from the Genomics and Molecular Medicine Unit at IGIB and the corresponding author of the paper.

It is already known that when the amount of a particular protein that suppresses the spread of cancer (metastasis) called nonmetastatic 2 (NME2) is high the tendency of the cancer to spread is low. But what came as a surprise is the role of this protein in controlling the telomerase levels as well. How NME2 controls metastasis is not clearly understood. But surprisingly we found that NME2 controls the levels of telomerase, Dr. Chowdhury says.

The mechanism

The researchers found that NME2 binds to a DNA structure (G-quadrauplex) found in the telomerase promoter. Once bound, the NME2 facilitates a well known suppressor of gene expression (REST complex) to bind to the telomerase promoter and control the production of telomerase.

Experiments show that if you dont have NME2 then the REST suppressor cannot bind to the telomerase promoter and control the production of telomerase, says Dhurjhoti Saha from IGIB and one of the first authors of the paper.

We used proteomics approach to study the protein-protein interactions. We could identify protein members of the REST complex that interact with NME2. The IGIB team then confirmed the role of the REST complex and its function, says Dr. Ramesh Ummanni, from the Centre for Chemical Biology at the CSIR-Indian Institute of Chemical Technology (CSIR-IICT), Hyderabad and a co-author of the paper.

Drug target

We established that the DNA structure (G-quadrauplex) could be a possible drug target once we understood the mechanism of NME2 binding to the promoter followed by the REST suppressor complex, Dr. Chowdhury says. The involvement of a DNA structural architecture allowed the team to use small molecules that recognised the specific structure.

Since the amount of NME2 is low in many metastatic cancerous cells, the researchers used small molecules that were able to function like NME2 by recognising and binding to the DNA structure. We screened 20 molecules and 11 were able to bring down the telomerase level in fibrosarcoma cancer cells, Dr. Chowdhury says.

Based on the initial lead from the small molecules, the researchers are planning to synthesise new molecules to optimise for drug-like characteristics for therapeutic use. The molecules will then be tested on animals.
