Hotels line up to tap youth slaves – MacroBusiness (blog)

By Leith van Onselen

Over recent months, several labour market experts have raised concerns about the proliferation of unpaid internships, which risked becoming a black market for slave labour.

Last month, the Turnbull Government controversially announced that it would expand its $750 million Youth-Jobs PaTH program to prepare, trial and ultimately hire young Australians into the retail sector, which garnered a strong push-back from the union movement, Labor and The Greens:

Up to 10,000 internships will be offered to unemployed youths over the next four years in a deal struck between the federal government and retail sector

They will get a start at a job and, you know what, they could go on to great heights, Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull said on Monday

The PaTH scheme (Prepare, Trial, Hire) offers young jobseekers $200 a fortnight on top of their income support payments to undertake internships, and gives employers a $1000 upfront payment for taking them on

But Australian Council of Trade Unions president Ged Kearney said the program offered no path to qualification, employment or workforce protection.

This is a government-sanctioned program that actually borders on slavery, she told reporters in Melbourne.

If this does create new jobs, then pay the kids for the jobs. Pay them a wage. Theyre going to be productive. Theyre going to be contributing to the bottom line of these businesses

Labor and the Greens are opposed to the program, insisting it will allow young people to be exploited by employers.

If the PaTH program becomes simply a supply of cheap labour for employers who would otherwise be paying people full time wages to do that work, then thats a bad thing, deputy opposition leader Tanya Plibersek said.

Yesterday, it was revealed that the Australian Hotels Association has lined up to tap 10,000 internships over the next four years amid reports that only 200 young people have gotten jobs in the first four months of the Youth-Jobs PaTH program. And this has drawn another strong rebuke from the ACTU. From The Australian:

Since April 1, 7000 young people have commenced employability training, 1,015 internships have started, and 200 young people have gained employment.

Employment Minister Michaelia Cash was forced today to defend the outcomes given the Government had promised up to 120,000 internships 30,000 a year over the life of the four year program.

Well, it was always up to 30,000, she told ABC radio.

She said the government had been absolutely delighted by the take-up since April.

We now have 200 of our young people who were, quite frankly, looking down the barrel of long-term welfare (who) have now gone through the program and are in employment, she said.

Senator Cash will join Malcolm Turnbull in Perth today to announce that the Australian Hotels Association will commit to establishing 10,000 internships over the next four years

Business taking on an intern will receive an upfront $1000 payment. The internship is between 15 and 25 hours a week across a period ranging from four to 12 weeks. Interns will receive $200 a fortnight from the government on top of their regular income support.

If the intern gets a job, the employer will receive a further payment of $6500 or $10,000

ACTU secretary Sally McManus said no business would employ someone on the minimum wage if they could get a worker for free.

This program is gifting young people to businesses, destroying jobs and not giving a single young person a useful skill or recognised qualification, she said.

Prime Minister Turnbull and Minister Cash are selling young peoples futures out from under them to shore up the votes of the business community.

Huge numbers of young people are already priced out of education and skills training because they cant find steady work and wages arent keeping pace with inflation. This program, which will tear the bottom of the labour market, is only going to make this dire situation worse.

MB noted similar concerns to the ACTU when PaTH was initially announced. That is, while the PaTH program may help at the margins, it wont do much to increase the overall supply of youth jobs and could also lead to employers substituting a regular employee for an intern, saving themselves money in the process.

Consider PaTH from an employers perspective. They will get a free kick as the Government is not only the one paying the intern, but the employer also receives $1,000 up front for employing the intern without the need to worry about sick days, annual leave or penalty rates. Then if the intern is offered a job, the employer receives another payment of $6500 or $10,000 from taxpayers!

Why would an employer hire a young worker on a casual basis when they can effectively get paid to take on an intern?

Indeed, the evidence on these types of programs shows that employers will generally substitute a worker receiving a wage subsidy for another worker who would otherwise have been hired.

DAC camp ‘Can-Do’ all about learning, growing, exploring – The Exponent Telegram (press release) (registration)

Summer Camp is certainly something most everyone can relate to.

Close your eyes and go back to those days when you learned to make homemade ice cream, tie rope knots, and work together as a team. The Disability Action Centers Summer Camp is not much different from camps that we remember.

We start with those sometimes awkward ice breaker games, make crafts and personal mementos, and partake in lots of eating, lots and lots of eating! DACs Camp CAN-DO, while much like camps we remember and hold dear, is also different in many ways.

The Disability Action Center Camp CAN-DO is about learning, growing, exploring and proving that our campers CAN-DO Anything. We want to challenge campers to do new things, proving both to themselves and others that they are full of way more ability than they are disability. Camp CAN-DO is not only open to individuals with special needs, but also their siblings, family members and non-disabled peers. It is truly an inclusive camp, where everyone, regardless of age or ability level, feels at home, welcomed and valued. Camp CAN-DO strives to provide an atmosphere of inclusion, personal empowerment, mentoring opportunities, creative expression, as well as provide innovative opportunities for campers and their families.

The DACs Camp CAN-DO will be held July 24-28, at the Disability Action Center and include travel to other accessible locations as part of the camp theme The DAC is Going Places. Much emphasis for this years camp will be the use of assistive technology in recreation, outdoor activity and travel. The week-long camp will focus on acclimating campers to new recreational activities and expanding their horizons through unique travel experiences, especially those experiences previously deemed as unattainable. Field trips are planned throughout Marion County to learn about our local history and points of interest, including the Marion County Historical Society, Pufferbellys Ice Cream Station, WV Folklife Center and the Homestead Farm Center. Other travel-related activities include cooking around the world, creating a personal passport, and mapping out future travel goals!

Camp CAN-DO is open to individuals age 8 and up, which is a departure from the primarily adult-driven programs that the DAC offers during the school year. The camp may be a child or familys first experience with the DAC and lays the ground work for their orientation to the DAC and the wide range of programs that are offered and will be much needed once the child is out of school.

Camp CAN-DO is held each week day from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and is open to individuals of all ages with physical and intellectual challenges. Siblings, family members and community supporters also play an important role in the success and integration of the camps activities. For more information about Camp CAN-DO and other DAC programs, you can visit http://www.disabilityactioncenter.com or call the center at 304-366-3213.

Grant to help support girls in STEM – UPMatters.com

Like Local 3 News on Facebook:

MICHIGAN -- The Michigan Organization on Adolescent Sexual Health (MOASH) has been awarded a two-year grant from the American Association of University Women (AAUW) for their project Michigan Youth (MY) Girls Say.

This project offers holistic programming to K-12 self-identified girls in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) to cultivate personal advocacy and resilience.

Gender based discrimination is pervasive in STEM academia and workforce. Without a foundation of personal empowerment, girls will abandon the STEM field. Taryn Gal, Managing Director at MOASH said STEM programming prepares students for success in many areas, but it does not prepare girls for a future in a field that is predominantly male. Research shows that it is not lack of interest, relevant education, or ability that accounts for a low percentage of women in STEM professions, but an adverse learning and working culture of sexual harassment, assault, and discrimination that girls are not prepared to navigate and challenge.

Participants in MY Girls Say will learn concrete skills, understand their rights, and recognize the strength in their whole selves to demand and achieve equitable treatment in a male-dominated STEM field.

Awarded early last month through the Community Action Grant from AAUW, MOASH has already begun its work connecting with committed project partners including AAUW of Michigan, Females Excelling More in Math Engineering and the Sciences (FEMMES), Phi Sigma Rho, Girl Scouts Heart of Michigan, Stop Sexual Assault in Schools, and a certified mindfulness and yoga instructor.

On July 16, MOASH coordinated its first MY Girls Say workshop about combating gender expectations and understanding TItle IX with an Ann Arbor Daisy Girl Scouts troop of girls 6-9 years old.

Throughout the next two years, MOASH will implement workshops on Title IX, spearhead self-advocacy training, and coordinate gender-embodiment yoga sessions.

Project partners will help ensure the development and widespread dispersal of effective materials to girls across Ann Arbor and other areas in Southeast Michigan. Components of MY Girls Say are youth-informed and/or youth-led.

Prior to MOASHs MY Girls Say program, there was no holistic approach to empowering girls in STEM to challenge future gender discrimination and few opportunities for girls in Michigan to receive Title IX education.

MY Girls Say has the potential to transform the way girls view their potential, their education, as well as their community. Those who wish to follow MOASHs progress on this project are directed to sign up for the MOASH e-newsletter and to like MOASHs Facebook page to stay informed.

Are campaigns like ‘Real Beauty’ real empowerment? – Campaign US

When it comes to empowerment, everyone jumps straight to Dove. Few brands get remotely close to the impact that Doves "Real Beauty" campaign has had on culture, which fundamentally changed the way we view beauty and liberated women to feel comfortable in their own skin, stretch marks and all. It was such an important shift in our culture, acting as catalyst for a wave of female empowerment campaigns.

As I reflected on the well-deserved praise for the campaign, it got me wondering is liberation the same as empowerment? Is it enough to make someone "feel good" about themself if the goal is to motivate them to do something to improve their life? Or does it just make them settle? And does it make sense for all the other "female empowerment" brands to adopt the same strategy as Dove? Or are they just noise?

People often think of self-esteem and self-efficacy as the same sort of thing, but there is a big difference, particularly in terms of how empowered they leave someone feeling. Self-esteem reflects a persons subjective evaluation of their worth. Self-efficacy refers to the personal belief about ones ability to perform specific tasks or achieve specific outcomes. Put another way, self-esteem is belief about who you are, which can be somewhat fixed, whereas self-efficacy is a belief about what youre capable of.

Dove falls into the self-esteem camp, which was an extremely effective strategy, considering the beauty industrys history of tearing a womans confidence down and fueling the inner critic that lives within us. For decades, women were depicted by unrealistic images, which were devastating to the self-esteem of women everywhere. It was liberating and empowering when Dove turned this on its head and made the beauty industry the enemy. However, self-esteem is not always an effective strategy.

Carol Dweck, the Lewis and Virginia Eaton Professor of Psychology at Stanford University, is famous for her research on mindset. Dweck showed that person-praise, such as "youre so smart, talented, gifted, brilliant, beautiful," etc., while it helps someone feel good about themselves, leads to what she coined a Fixed Mindset. Someone with a Fixed Mindset is likely to avoid challenges, give up easily, see effort as fruitless or, worse, ignore negative feedback, be threatened by the success of others and as a result fail to reach their potential. This is not empowering.

Conversely, process-praise, which emphasizes the process someone went through to achieve an outcome, cultivates a Growth Mindset and builds self-efficacy, as it enables the person to learn and replicate their behavior. Someone with a Growth Mindset embraces challenges, persists in the face of setbacks, sees effort as a path to mastery, learns from criticism, finds lessons and inspiration from the success of others and as a result can reach ever-higher levels of achievement. This is real empowerment.

Michael Jordan is probably one of the best examples of Growth Mindset individuals on earth. He was cut from his high-school basketball team and saw it as a challenge to work harder and give them no choice but to put him on the team. He was known to be the first to arrive at training and the last to leave. Over the years, Nikes Air Jordan brand has more closely reflected the Growth Mindset of its namesake.

Initially, the advertising was like that of any other superstar brand. Its actually quite entertaining to watch the old advertising reel, featuring Jordan achieving the impossible. Flying through the air like some kind of superhuman, dunking on a 20-foot-high ring. He makes it look easy. Its pure, natural talent. The advertising is praising the person, Michael Jordan. Inspiring, but not that empowering for anyone hoping to follow in his footsteps.

Contrast this a recent campaign. The monologue from Jordan sums it up. "Ive missed more than 9,000 shots in my career. Ive lost almost 300 games. 26 times Ive been trusted to take the game-winning shotand missed. Ive failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed."

The later campaign praised the journey that led to his success, celebrating his failures as opportunities to learn and grow. It reinforced that anything was possible through hard work, and the importance of perseverance. It left aspiring basketball players feeling ready for the challenge. The brand went from sponsoring sporting legends to creating sporting legends.

Brands have a unique ability to shape the mindsets of the people they are created for. We need to use that power to make sure were doing more than just making people feel good about themselves. Lets help them believe in themselves. This is real empowerment.

Alison Earl is the Director of Strategy for Burns Group.

Dabawenya writes a self-empowerment book | SunStar – Sun.Star

A DABAWENYA authors for the first time a self-empowerment book.

Joan Mae Soco-Bantayan, 33, who is a nurturer at Tuburan Institute and 2003 Mutya ng Dabaw, wrote the book Remember Who You Really Are: 12 questions to help you how. The book launch was held last Friday, July 21, at the Abreeza Mall Activity Center.

I have been longing to write a book that will help empower our fellow men and finally, Ive done it, Soco-Bantayan says that even when she longed to write a book, she did not plan to do it this year.

Interestingly, Lady Bam Petilos, a TV and personality and a friend whom I met in Ike Pono seminar, came up to me last January and told me that its time for me to write a book, she says. Lady Bam also told me that the idea to write a book is divinely guided. Inwardly, I felt that too and I knew I had to honor that.

The book, according to Soco-Bantayan, is a summation of the lessons she learned from seminars like Ike Pono facilitated by Bruce Conching and Mission Courage Workshop facilitated by Alternative Nobel Prize awardee Nicanor Perlas. It also discusses the personal questions that we can use as a compass so that we are able to cope with our lives better, Soco-Bantayan adds. Because of the busy-ness that weighs in our lives, we have forgotten to look deeper into ourselves and find that deep inside lies the fulfillment.

Soco-Bantayan adds that Remember Who You Really Are not only talks about personal desires that one can achieve, I am emphasizing the sense of duty along with gratitude to in the book. This is because we have to change our inner perspective first before we can help in the world.

During the book launch, various guests were treated to angel message oracle card reading and gave angel card readings and guidance to guests for free.

This book would not have been possible without the help of the angels, she shares.

The book comes with an angel message bookmarker created by Angeologist Princess Buendia.

Empowerment through visual metaphor – The Jerusalem Post

Lit up faces are sneakily on display. Glowing blue, green, red, yellow, they can be seen peering out from behind gates, walls and doors, or from under roads and metal structures. They are trapped within boxes, with stories to tell passersby.

These faces represent all of us. All around the world, people face the same struggles, shoulder the same baggage and overcome the same problems. These faces are the portraits of real people that Ariela Wertheimer has preserved in her Light Boxes. Her exhibit, The Freedom to Let Go, on display at the 2017 Venice Biennale, encourages us to listen to the stories, but also to let go of the problems, break through the insecurities, and simply connect with other people.

People are people are people all over the world. They have the same problems, the same issues, and you can leave those problems here, Wertheimer said.

Wertheimers kind eyes and open smile radiate in the Alfa Romeo Exhibition Hall in Tel Aviv, where some of her Light Boxes and Rope Series paintings are hanging for the opening of a new Jeep car model. They asked her to show some of her work because its message connected with Jeeps marketing strategy: freedom, activity and letting go.

Life is not still, like we are not, she said. We are always us, but every day we are slightly different. We feel different things, we are a little different.

To show her work at the Jeep opening is a professional leap for Wertheimer, who only began displaying her work three years ago, in the Farkash Gallery in Jaffa.

She and her husband moved to Tel Aviv in 2013 after all of her five children had left home, and this motivated her to start working on her art more seriously.

Moving to Tel Aviv was a big movement in my soul, Wertheimer said, eyes sparkling. I always lived outside of cities in small places and suddenly Im in the big city and Im seeing all this street art. It was very moving. In the beginning I couldnt do anything there were so many good artists everywhere. I was quite paralyzed.

But she soon began photographing, painting and creating again, inspired by the people around her and their stories.

Im inspired from life, she said with a smile. I like to empower people, and help them if I can.

Wertheimer has a wide variety of life experiences to draw from. She is married to Eitan Wertheimer, the son of industrialist Stef Wertheimer and one of the wealthiest men in Israel.

While she always wanted to be an artist, she first studied to be an X-ray technician at Rambam Hospital in Haifa, and served in the IDF for 12 years. After her service, she began to wonder what she wanted to do with the rest of her life and came back to art. She still volunteers at Rambam Hospital in the oncology department and is dedicated to philanthropy movements for health and education. Now, she uses her art to help people.

I dont sell them very expensive, so that young people can buy them and begin collecting, she said. All of the money I receive goes to the Rambam Hospital Cancer Department.

She has a room at the Venice Biennale this year in a palazzo organized by the European Cultural Center, which provides additional exhibition venues so that more than one artist from each country can present their work. Wertheimer is excited to be in the same palazzo as Yoko Ono.

Her Light Boxes are, literally, boxes. Wertheimer prints black and white photographs on transparent plexiglass that become the front image, and paints a colorful acrylic portrait on wood for the back wall. The box is lit up with LED lighting, and with this box she tells a multilayered story of the person in the portrait.

If you come close, you can only see the front picture, she said, pointing at a green portrait of a woman peeking through from behind a photograph of the metal skeleton of a building.

But if you move far away from the picture, she said, walking away to view it from the opposite wall. You get much more depth.

This painting, on display at the Alfa Romeo Exhibition Hall, tells the story of a woman who built a shelter for women escaping domestic abuse. The building in the photograph is only a skeleton of what it will come to mean for the women it protects.

All of the stories she portrays are real; from real people, television shows or newspapers. While the boxes share these stories, they have also trapped the characters inside.

Each person and their own small or large prison, each with their own story from the past of present, Wertheimer wrote in her catalogue. Once we recognize our problem and embrace it, we will embed the railings as a basic element in our personality and come out of the experience reinforced.

There are 14 light boxes from Jaffa and 16 from Venice in her exhibit at the Biennale. The stories are truthful, uplifting, serious and beautiful. Independently, they tell personal stories, struggles and triumphs. Together they say, from Jaffa to Venice, we are the same.

These stories together form a unified world where power is measured in human frailty and strength all at the same time no matter where you are, she wrote.

While the Light Boxes may be Wertheimers main attraction, she has three other projects on display at the Biennale that connect with the theme of the Light Boxes. The Leaders is a series of three portraits painted behind photographs of palm trees. The trees represent the qualities of a leader.

Some people think they are strong. The palm tree grows everywhere; it doesnt need any special climate, and people can use everything in the tree, she said the leaves can be made into ropes, the trunk can be used for building and the fruit can be eaten or made into oil.

You take everything from [the leaders], she said.

But The Leaders also pose the idea that it can be dangerous when people are too dependent on their leaders.

There is a worm that goes into [the palm tree] and cuts the head off so there is only the trunk. Maybe it is an allegory of something that has happened in the world. Maybe some of our leaders dont have a head, she suggested with a laugh.

Wertheimer also has her own rendition of the The Last Supper; a landscape of 12 figures that tells the story of modern-day connection: the era of the cell phone. An era in which we know so much more about each other, but connect in person so little. An innovation meant for progress that has instead boxed us in.

We are trapped, depending on what we do with it, how much we use it and how much we want to be under Big Brothers eyes, she said. With the phone, with Facebook everyone knows everything about you.

The last piece in Wertheimers exhibit at the Biennale is a two-meter by two-meter chandelier, which hangs over the center of the room, titled The Institute of Marriage. It is made up of separate panels that hang from a plexiglass loop. Together the panels display the portrait of a man, but they are separated by several inches from each other.

Even in a relationship you have to give space, she said. As you walk around it you see a different part of the man. As time passes, you see more things. Over time, we discover something new in our partner.

Fragments of glass hang from the center of the chandelier, symbolizing the glass broken under the Jewish wedding canopy. The idea is that relationships are fragile but can be strong.

These four different projects all tell different stories of individuals, but they come together with a shared message: people are people are people.

While her art is making strides around the world, Wertheimer was never looking to be famous. She loves creating art and helping people. These two dreams came together in her art, and have attracted people from all over the world. In telling truthful stories, her Light Boxes, and the rest of her exhibit, do exactly what Wertheimer set out to do: empower people.

The Freedom to Let Go will be on display at the Palazzo Mora in Venice until October 31.

USDA creating better quality of life, safer environment through technology transfer – FederalNewsRadio.com

What do fluorescent lights that scan for Salmonella, remote sensors for testing bridge stability and a tool to identify bee mites have in common?

Theyre part of the latest crop of innovative ideas that make up the244 new inventions and 109 patent applications included in the Agriculture Departmentsannual report on technology transfer.

The report itself tries to compile new inventions, patents, technology breakthroughs, new methodologies; really the kinds of collaborations that USDA science and technology folks have with the private sector through special agreements, said acting USDA Undersecretary Ann Bartuska. So you have an incredible array of things that are in the annual report. My favorite ones happen to be the things that clearly demonstrate breakthroughs and innovations. In fact, they really do represent the range of work that happens at the 16 agencies that comprise USDA.

The report started being published within the last 20 years. Each year, theres a call for what everybody throughout the USDAand its components is working on.

Sponsored content: Download our Executive Briefing to learn how agency and industry experts are using cloud for data and application strategy.

It covers the gamut of agreements like CRADAs, which are cooperative research and development agreements with the private sector. It includes patents. It includes licenses. It includes new exploratory work thats happening, said Bartuska, whois also serving asacting chief scientist for research, education and economics at USDA.So its really quite diverse in what its capturing. There is in the report tables that capture the data in those categories by agency, and then we roll it all up to one for the department.

Bartuska said this years report is pretty consistent with past years numbers of patents and inventions, though the output can be impacted by technological breakthroughs. In fiscal 2015, the report included 222 new inventions and 125 new patent applications.

For example, gene sequencing has created a whole new set of processes and products and subsequent opportunities for research and development, Bartuska said.

The outcomes that especially our intramural agencies Agricultural Research Service, Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS), the Forest Service I think the work that they have done, the production of new things, has beenpretty constant over time, with some blips, Bartuska said. The genomic sequencing probably is one area. Theres been some advances inpest protection and quarantine matters, that really track where theyve had infestations, so you might be able to follow some increases and outcomesfollowing a particular pest outbreak, and then it goes back. Theres a lot of interest in disease transmission right now. If I look at that report, theres a lot on mosquitoes and transmissions.

That includes the enhancement of clothing worn by Marines to better prevent bug bites.

Bartuska said if she had to look to future reports, she would expect to see an increase in water use and drought response.

New bill would loosen restrictions on TSP withdrawals

Were really interested in reducing the amount of water used by Agriculture and being more responsible in the water that we use, Bartuska said.

She said sensor technology and the use of aerial vehicles [drones], and how those technologies can be more effective and efficient, is another area where future technology transfer reports mightshow an increased interest.

Effectiveness and efficiency are things USDA always has in mind, especially when it comes to a return on investment for taxpayers, Bartuska said.

One hundred percent of the people use our product because we produce food, Bartuska said. And so wetouch everybody, but to do it in a sustainable way, to be able to meet other peoples values on the environment and water quality, were very conscious of that. A lot of this return on investment is how you do work more efficiently, more effectively. And again, get a lot of benefit by that dollar that weve been investing.

Bartuska said according to USDA math, for every dollar invested in research and development, $20 is returned to taxpayers.

One example in the report that highlights USDAs mission is an anti-cancer drug developed by Penn State University researchers. The drug comes from parts of Omega-3 fatty acids.

The connection back to USDA is that other than not only funding good science, but Omega-3s are found in agricultural and aquacultural products, so youre extracting from one of our products into something that would then benefit human health, Bartuska said. It really does reflect that Agriculture is in part about farming, but Agriculture is so much about all kinds of food technology that we have, diseases; the diversity, again, of activities under USDA is incredibly broad.

The report also highlights the work USDA does with universities, the private sector and other agencies, Bartuska said.

Agreements with the private sector can come in the form of cooperative research and development agreements, and at some point, those products can be moved into the private sector.

In some cases, the patent would be held by us and they get exclusive license on the product, but it allows us then to form and both mutually invest in an outcome, Bartuska said. So weve really been trying to promote especially when we see the potential for a particular line of research to become a commercial activity, to build these private sector partnerships.

The report also complements the administrations Made In America, campaign, through contributing to job growth and supporting new business, especially in rural areas, Bartuska said.

Allthose products that you see in the technology transfer report, we can see them as helping to contribute to this overall Made In America process, Bartuska said. Technology transfer is all about development of a research product and then moving it to somebody to use it. It is as fine to me thata CEO of a company uses something as you [would] in your home, because hopefully what youre using is creating a better quality of life, a safer environment, a better use of resources so that were reducing waste, were reducing water consumption. So all of those things really add upto the value of what our research products can do.

Palmer Luckey’s new defense technology start-up Anduril draws execs from Palantir – Los Angeles Times

Two former Palantir Technologies engineers appear to be in charge of Palmer Luckeys new defense technology start-up Anduril Industries, according to newly reviewed regulatory filings.

Luckey, a Long Beach native acclaimed for catalyzing the nascent virtual reality technology industry by founding Oculus VR, has said his new venture could do the same for the defense industry.

We are spending more than ever on defense technology, yet the pace of innovation has been slowing for decades, he told the New York Times in a brief statement in early June.

Beyond that, Luckey has said little publicly about Andurils makeup or ambitions since its founding April 20. He left Facebooks Oculus division in late March for unspecified reasons.

His role at Anduril is unclear. But registration documents filed with California in late June list Brian W. Schimpf as chief executive and Matthew W. Grimm as chief operating officer. The documents also point to a small office at an Irvine business park as the companys headquarters.

LinkedIn profiles for Schimpf and Grimm show they spent at least years six together at Palantir, where they described their job as tweaking the companys data analysis software to meet client desires. Palantirs clients include law enforcement agencies and corporations that want to search through multiple sets of information with ease. The sensitive nature of the work has made Palantir one of Silicon Valleys most secretive and highly valued companies.

Both Schimpf and Grimm note that they have bachelors degrees from Cornell University. Schimpf was on a Cornell team that competed unsuccessfully in the Defense Departments annual competition to develop an autonomous vehicle that can race across rough desert terrain.

That Luckey would connect with people with ties to Palantir isnt surprising. Palantir was kickstarted with funding from Peter Thiel, whose Founders Fund venture capital firm was set to invest in Luckeys new firm, according to the New York Times report.

The Thiel connection is evident in Andurils name too. Thiel investment funds and companies, including Palantir, are known for borrowing from the fantasy book series Lord of the Rings. Anduril, as fans of the books know, was the sword referred to as the flame of the West, forged from the remains of the weapon that cut the ring of power from Sauron's finger. The freshly cast weapon became a symbol of the one true king.

Incorporation documents for Anduril dont designate a price for the 20 million authorized shares of the start-up, suggesting that if Founders Fund has already invested, it has probably been in the form of a loan that could later be converted into stock.

Anduril and Thiel didnt respond to requests for comment. The companys name came to light last week when CNN and other media outlets reported that U.S. Rep. Will Hurd, a Texas Republican, had used data from Anduril as a foundation for proposed legislation. A bill that Hurd and other lawmakers introduced last week calls for the Department of Homeland Security to research a smart wall along the U.S.-Mexico border before erecting a traditional one.

Citing Luckey, Hurd said a high-tech wall would run about 2% of the cost of standard proposals. The pair visited the Texas-Mexico border together in June, according to the San Antonio Express-News.

Andurils jobs website says the company is seeking engineers with expertise in sensors, cameras, radars, robotics and flying objects. A combination of such technologies deployed along a border could allow a computer to automatically detect activity, alert law enforcement and track further movement.

Luckey, 24, left Facebook under a cloud of controversy. Oculus has repeatedly reduced the price for its year-old virtual reality headset, which points to weaker-than-predicted demand.

He was implicated in a trademark misuse lawsuit that left Oculus on the hook for hundreds of millions of dollars after a jury verdict in February. And consumers and Oculus business partners had decried Luckeys donations to a conservative political organization during last years presidential election.

Thiel has President Trumps ear. Trump made fortifying the border a key part of his presidential platform. The venture capitalists former chief of staff is a top technology advisor at the White House, and Thiel has played a role in bringing together tech executives to meet with Trump and other White House leaders.

Pharmaceutical Brands Can Use Programmatic Technology, Too – eMarketer

Jack Hogan CTO Lifescript

For pharmaceutical companies, deploying programmatic technology is a sticky subject. Because of strict privacy and patient protection laws, pharma companies are limited in how they can target individual consumers, which makes programmatic advertising more of a guessing game. But that doesnt mean it cant be done. Jack Hogan, CTO at medical publisher Lifescript, spoke with eMarketers Maria Minsker about how pharma companies can use publishers data to leverage programmatic technology.

eMarketer: How can medical publishers create proxy audiences to power programmatic technology for pharma brands?

Jack Hogan: Medical publishers have vast audiences of opt-in consumers with targetable IDs and declared health interests. Were talking about first-party data, not third-party health and medical data, which is inaccurate 50% of the time. By decoupling that first-party, declared health data from any private information, publishers enable brands to reach desired audiences with specific medical interests across the entire ad ecosystemwithout breaking any HIPAA rules.

Publishers are able to create segments of users interested in certain conditions, and feed these audience sets to pharma companies.

eMarketer: How does this make it possible for pharmaceutical companies to leverage programmatic advertising technology?

Hogan: While the guidelines for HIPAA are very stringent and strict when it comes to the type of data that can be accessed and shared, medical publishers typically dont touch any medical records or confidential medical data. Rather, publishers have access to declared interest in specific conditions or symptoms, which falls under other guidelines. As a result, publishers are able to create segments of users interested in certain conditions, and feed these audience sets to pharma companies through programmatic pipelines for ad targeting.

Plus, once a publisher zeros in on a users interests and pinpoints that users identity using a primary identifier such as an email address, that anonymized identity can then be extended to a mobile device for programmatic advertising via mobile as well.

eMarketer: Can you share an example of how a brand might work with a publisher to target a specific audience segment using programmatic technology?

Hogan: Lets say a statin drug manufacturer is looking to target people who have high cholesterol with a marketing campaign. A publisher can create a segment of people who have self-identified as showing interest in this topic while engaging with the publishers site. The publisher can then make that segment available to the advertiser through a programmatic pipeline, enabling them to work with their technology vendors to target that segment through programmatic display, video or mobile advertising.

There are some marketers in the space who dont understand the marketing technology requirements for handling private data.

eMarketer: Are enough pharmaceutical marketers taking advantage of programmatic advertising, or are they missing an opportunity when it comes to health data?

Hogan: There are some marketers in the space who dont understand the marketing technology requirements for handling private data. For example, all user data should be de-identified, and not tied back to an individual. Personal health data like that should not be used in any marketing or advertising efforts. Marketers should be using smart tools that can decouple data from individuals identifiers, starting at the point of opt-in through collection and use.

Teachers embracing technology in the classroom – KRIS Corpus Christi News

CORPUS CHRISTI -

Teachers from area districts are turning to technology to make learning activities more exciting for students and staff alike. Instructional Technology Specialist Cary Perales says, it's all for the third annual "Tech 2 Teach" conference held at Veterans Memorial High School.

"We have teachers that're on their break coming in to learn something to bring to their classroom to teach at a higher level," Teacher, Denis Wisner said.

Wisner is just one of nearly a thousand teachers trying to better their ability to educate, ahead of the new school year.

"Really it's to let our teachers get fired up about going back into the classroom and teaching our students those 21st century skills sets that they need," Perales said.

She adds, that the conference considers multiple ways of learning and bringing staff together.

"Getting to network with other teachers, they're getting to see all kinds of sessions integrating technology in the classroom."

Teachers like Emily Schellinger and Jenifer Martinez say, while technology is seeming taking over, some still like the old fashioned way of hands-on learning. However, students are still encourage to B.Y.O.D.

"It's very important for the students to come into the classroom and use their devices, here at Veterans we have BYOD, which is bring your own device and whether it's a phone or chrome book or a laptop the kids are encouraged to use it," Martinez said.

Overall, the goal is to keep the attention of easily distracted students, focused on fun, interactive learning tools.

Tesla’s Longtime Battery Technology Director Leaves Company – Bloomberg

Tesla Inc.s director of battery technology has left the company, the latest in a raft of management departures from the automaker introducing its new Model 3 electric car.

Kurt Kelty, who joined Tesla in 2006, was one of the longest-serving executives at the automaker led by Chief Executive Officer Elon Musk. He previously worked more than 14 years at Panasonic Corp., Teslas partner on the battery gigafactory near Reno, Nevada. Kelty led negotiations with Panasonic on that plant, according to his LinkedIn profile.

We can confirm that Kurt Kelty has left the company to explore new opportunities and we want to thank him for everything hes done for Tesla, the company said in an emailed statement Tuesday, noting that his responsibilities will be distributed among Teslas existing teams.

Kelty couldnt immediately be reached for comment.

News of Keltys exit comes at a critical juncture for Tesla, which turned over the first batch of Model 3 vehicles to employees Friday night. Tesla began producing the more affordable electric car last month and aims to make 20,000 a month by December, a challenging ramp-up plan that Musk described to employees as production hell.

Teslas more than 22,000 deliveries of Model S sedans and Model X sport utility vehicles in the second quarter were slowed by a temporary shortage of 100 kWh battery packs. The company said last month the packs were being made using new technology and production lines.

Tesla and Keltys previous employer Panasonic have had a close partnership, with the two in a supply agreement for 1.8 billion battery cells through 2017 for the Model S and Model X. For the Model 3, the companies jointly developed new, slightly larger cylindrical battery cells than those used in Teslas existing models.

Chief Financial Officer Jason Wheeler, a former Google executive, left the company earlier this year. Tesla reports second quarter earnings on Wednesday after the market closes.

Egalet’s Guardian Technology Begins Fight Against Opioid Abuse Epidemic – Seeking Alpha

It may be tempting to pick up some Egalet Corporation (EGLT) stock now that the price has dropped over 75% in the last year, but be wary of catching knives which may still be falling. Much of Egalets apparent value is reliant on its Guardian Technology proving itself as a credible abuse-deterrent technology. Egalet stock should remain stagnant in the near future, and I advise to keep an eye on it and re-evaluate in mid-to-late 2018.

Opioid abuse, including the prescription drugs oxycodone, hydrocodone, and others, has risen exponentially in the last decade. Drug overdoses were the leading cause of accidental death in the United States in 2015, with prescription opioid deaths making up roughly 40% of these. As the problem grows worse, more and more companies are creating abuse-deterrent technology platforms to attempt to curb the epidemic. Egalet Corporation is focused on developing abuse-deterrent formulations of opioids using its proprietary Guardian Technology. The Guardian Technology platform is designed to make pills more resistant to physical and chemical manipulation, but Egalet's first approved product utilizing Guardian Technology, Arymo ER, did not receive all abuse-deterrent designations for which they were hoping. This could lead to a very slow stock price recovery for Egalet as much of their pipeline is reliant on Guardian Technology, which now seems like it will not be able to stand out in a crowded market.

The companys stock has been decimated in the last year due to labeling problems of its most recently approved drug, Arymo ER. Though gaining FDA approval of Arymo ER early this year, Egalet was not able to secure the coveted intranasal or oral abuse-deterrent labels. The FDA has been fairly relaxed regarding Arymo ER abuse-deterrent marketing material, but the only abuse-deterrent label granted was deterrence against intravenous use. The FDAs relaxed oversight of marketing material may be indicative of anything helps attitude in the fight against opioid abuse. While this may help Egalet market Arymo ER, there are still many problems associated with marketing a similar product in a crowded market.

Egalet has two other approved products which it is currently marketing, SPRIX Nasal Spray and Oxyado. SPRIX nasal spray is an NSAID (Nonsteroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drug) targeted at short-term (up to 5 days) pain management for moderate to severe pain which requires analgesia at the opioid level. SPRIX, which accounts for ~75% of Egalets sale, may face competition beginning in 2018 from generics as its patent protection runs out. The other approved product, Oxyado, is an IR oxycodone pill aimed designed to discourage against nasal and intravenous abuse. Egalet recently submitted approval for higher dose Oxyado (10 mg and 15 mg) which could help boost sales in 2H17. Revenues have been growing steadily for these two products, seeing double digit percentage growth quarter over quarter for the past year.

Guardian Technology is Egalets proprietary technology used to create abuse-deterrent forms of opioid pills. Apart from SPRIX nasal spray and Oxyado, all Egalets approved and pipeline products rely on Guardian Technology being accepted by the healthcare field as a viable abuse-deterrent technology. Guardian Technology takes advantage of injection molding a polymer matrix to create a physically hard and difficult to manipulate pill. The technology also resists chemical manipulation and API extraction by turning into a viscous hydrogel on contact with liquids. This allowed Arymo ER to secure an intravenous abuse-deterrent label.

It is important to note that Guardian Technology does not actually alter the API of the drug, but is a way to make it more difficult to abuse. The problem with Arymo ER and other abuse deterrent opioids on the market is that they are not effective in deterring against the most common way prescription opioids are abused orally.

During a recent conversation I had with an abuse counselor, he described drug addicts as some of the smartest, most clever people he knew. This conversation got me thinking about the innovation needed to curb the opioid abuse crisis in the United States. Yes, Guardian Technology will make it more difficult for patients to misuse prescription drugs. Yes, Guardian Technology is a step in the right direction. No, Guardian Technology should not be considered a game-changer in the fight against oral and nasal opioid abuse.

Figure 1. Orange Arrows Represent Use of Guardian Technology.

To make matters worse, the abuse-deterrent opioid market is crowded and growing more crowded rapidly. Many of the players in this field utilize abuse-deterrent mechanisms very similar to Egalets Guardian Technology (MorphaBond ER, RoxyBond, etc.). Arymo ER only securing the intravenous abuse-deterrent label greatly hindered its chance to set itself apart from the other players in the market. The FDAs comprehensive action plan to reduce opioid misuse and abuse has a provision to expand abuse-deterrent formulations (ADFSs) to discourage abuse - which should encourage even more players to enter the market.

While the fundamentals arent looking great, Egalets technical indicators imply a bounce may be coming soon. The Relative Strength Index (RSI) has been hovering in the low 30s for the last few weeks indicating oversold, and the Moving Average Convergence Divergence (MACD) seems to be crossing the signal line, indicating potential bullish momentum.

Financially speaking, Egalet is in a decent position. Net Product sales increased from $2.5 million in 1Q16 to $5.5 million in 1Q17 while net loss increased from $18.5 million to $25.4 million in the same timeframe. Arymo ER sales may rely heavily on how well product is marketed. The company has a relatively high cash burn rate, but management has expressed confidence the company has enough cash, cash equivalents, and marketable securities to last until at least June 30, 2018. The company will continue to have a high cash burn rate for the foreseeable future as it continues R&D and marketing efforts.

This stock may be a buy if you are looking to sell on any bounce in stock price. Shorting does not seem logical at this point due to the stock losing ~75% of value in under a year, but may be a good move on a substantial bounce. Overall, the risk/reward is currently not in a good enough place to establish a position either way. I would suggest keeping an eye on this ticker and establishing a contrarian position on any big move either way. Short-term, this stock may be a good buy due to a possible technical bounce.

Yes, Guardian Technology discourages abuse by making the API less accessible and more difficult to alter, but to what extent? Egalet and their proprietary Guardian Technology are obviously improvements over the large number of opioids being prescribed with no abuse-deterrent properties whatsoever. The problem is whether Guardian Technology is a game-changing innovation or small step in the right direction which could soon be overshadowed by innovations of other companies. I lean toward the latter due to the fight against opioid abuse epidemic being such a potentially profitable market. Long-term, I do not believe Egalets Guardian Technology to be the solution for the opioid crisis taking place.

Overall, while Egalet Corporation may seem like a good buy at the current price, there is still room for further falling and the possibility the company may never be profitable. The long road to profitability for Egalet, coupled with the fact Guardian Technology is not a particularly game-changing technology, leads me to recommend avoiding this stock for now. There are better places to put your money which offer a much better risk/reward ratio. If you do feel the urge to invest in this company, I would encourage you to wait until at least August 9th to better evaluate after the conference call and Arymo ER sales data.

A Better, Safer Battery Could Be Coming to a Laptop Near You – New York Times

Ionic said it had developed prototypes of a rechargeable alkaline battery that can be made using continuous manufacturing processes similar to the making of plastic wrap. So far, the company, which is backed by William Joy, a pioneering Silicon Valley computer designer, has demonstrated up to 400 recharge cycles for its prototypes. Ionic executives say they believe they will be able to triple that.

The alkaline batteries that Ionic has developed would initially be heavier than todays lithium-ion batteries, said Mike Zimmerman, a materials scientist who is the founder and chief executive of Ionic. But the new batteries would more than compensate for that handicap with their cost advantage and, in time, their ability to store more energy.

There are other advantages besides cost and safety. Lithium-ion batteries rely on cobalt, and using that element comes with a human cost. Cobalt mines in Africa, for example, have been accused of using child labor while leaving behind a toxic mess.

Alkaline batteries, on the other hand, use relatively abundant zinc and manganese. Ionic can help us get lithium-ion past cobalt and completely eliminate it with alkaline, said Mr. Joy, who is a member of Ionics board.

He also said that the company had made progress toward an alkaline battery design that would replace zinc with more affordable aluminum. In the past, aluminum has not been usable because of issues like corrosion. Alkaline batteries based on aluminum would potentially weigh less than lithium-ion batteries and would be even cheaper to produce than todays alkaline designs.

Ionic will make its announcement in Colorado at a conference for the 35th anniversary of the Rocky Mountain Institute, a sustainable-energy research group founded by the physicist and environmentalist Amory Lovins and Hunter Lovins, his former wife.

They started with a very sensible set of criteria, Dr. Lovins said of Ionic. They use an unusual electrolyte to come up with a battery that uses common cheap materials and is benign.

But he added a note of caution: Batteries are very difficult and I want to see what they have and what can be measured and proven and whether it will get to market.

Technological progress in battery technology has been glacial compared with the exponential advances in processing speed and data storage capacity that have been staples of Silicon Valleys growth. In the last 150 years, only a handful of rechargeable battery chemistries have reached mass adoption.

Tesla, in partnership with Panasonic, is building a factory in Nevada with the intent of greatly expanding capacity to make lithium-ion batteries and lower production costs. Tesla officials said they wanted to create enough capacity to produce batteries for 1.5 million cars a year.

There is growing interest in pursuing such so-called solid-state battery technologies for both consumer and transportation applications. Last fall, the United States Department of Energys agency for supporting research in next-generation energy technology announced 16 research awards aimed at accelerating development of solid battery technologies, including a $3 million contract to Ionic Materials. The company said it had signed several licensing deals to produce commercial versions of its design, but it would not identify its partners.

The United States Advanced Battery Consortium, an auto industry group, wants to greatly reduce the cost of lithium-ion production. Analysts, however, say they believe the new facilities and technology from auto and battery manufacturers will help bring costs down, but still fall short of industry goals.

In contrast, Ionic executives said they had found a way to achieve energy production costs that would be less than a fifth of the auto consortiums target.

Bloomberg New Energy Finance, an energy research group, has forecast that mass-market adoption of electric vehicles will not occur until operating costs fall to match those of internal combustion engines. That is expected to happen in 2025, according to the group.

In December, Ionic Materials also described a solid material it said would improve the safety of existing lithium-ion batteries. The company has demonstrated the batteries resistance to catching fire or exploding by driving nails through them and even shooting them with bullets.

A version of this article appears in print on August 2, 2017, on Page B2 of the New York edition with the headline: Massachusetts Start-Up Trumpets Advance in Battery Capacity.

The New Tesla Is Great, But It Isn’t Progress – Bloomberg – Bloomberg

It is a nice looking car.

Tesla Inc.s new electric car has debuted to rave reviews; one writer called it the most important car in the world right now. In general, the commentary on the Model 3 has suggested the product delivers on its promise. Solar panels are falling exponentially in price, and there are periodic bursts of good news on the quest to develop a more durable and cost-effective battery. All of these developments would boost the prospects of green energy.

Tesla Delivers the New Model 3, Here's a First Look

You might think the U.S. productivity slowdown is finally ending, but unfortunately the news isnt as good as it first seems. Instead, we are specializing in a new and sadly necessary practice of what I call defensive innovation.

Defensive innovation is when you create a new product or capability to protect yourself against an impending disaster, such as the worst scenarios for climate change. Its important, of course, to practice defensive innovation, but dont confuse it with progress. The defense only stops your living standards from falling.

The military response to foreign threats is another example of defensive innovation. The risk and potential costs of cyberwarfare are escalating rapidly, and terrorist threats seem worse than they did in the 1980s or 1990s. The best case scenario is that we come up with better means of tracking and hindering cyber and terrorist attacks -- by cutting off funding or by tracing and halting potential perpetrators. Those too will be defensive innovations, aimed mostly at preserving capabilities we already have.

The American military might someday develop better protection against the new threat of North Korean intercontinental ballistic missiles, which might be capable of delivering nuclear weapons to U.S. cities, possibly even New York and Washington. Imagine something akin to Israels Iron Dome, but protecting a broader geographic area against a greater diversity of weapons. That would be an impressive achievement, but would be an essentially defensive innovation.

Sometimes defensive innovations are mixed in with positive advances. The aging American population faces a potential crisis of senility, dementia and Alzheimers disease. A very large number of nonfunctioning elderly people would impose a significant burden on the economy and on caretakers. If medical science miraculously eliminated those cognitive problems, that would be a very real gain in well-being and happiness for Americas elderly. But some of the gain would be defensive in nature, preventing millions of Americans from facing the burdens of caring for such individuals.

Similarly, the electric car is not entirely a defensive innovation. It may be zippier and fun to drive, with a new driver interface. Still, the truly exciting element of the electric car seems to be its potential for limiting carbon emissions and other forms of air pollution.

Driverless cars will save lives and ease commutes. But again they are a defensive product, as otherwise traffic congestion will be much worse.

The need for defensive innovation suggests that many observers overrate the true pace of technological progress. Too many exciting headlines are about cleaning up previous messes, and often those are messes we have made ourselves. Repair work is necessary, but its preventing a step backward rather than paving the way for higher living standards on a sustainable basis.

Note that in the earlier stages of economic growth, there is usually less defensive innovation, if only because there is less to defend. There are fewer resources to protect, and the pollution problems of poorer societies are either smaller-scale or simply intractable, short of having more prosperity. So when these poorer societies innovate, usually those are progressive developments. The relative paucity of defensive innovation does mean higher risk, of course, and that is a human cost. But if anything we are underestimating the progress those societies are making. They are accepting higher risks to move ahead more rapidly.

Clear thinking from leading voices in business, economics, politics, foreign affairs, culture, and more.

Share the View

These days, too many of Americas defensive innovations arent even about protecting actual social values at all. Homeowners seem to have gotten better at limiting nearby real estate developments, and defenders of the status quo have honed their skills at policy gridlock. More and more of the federal budget is frozen into place to pay for entitlements. That stultification of the role of government is what happens when you get too good at defensive innovation.

So dont be too easily impressed by even the truest and most reliable stories of tech advances. Instead ask yourself whether were playing offense or defense.

Debt-ceiling talks between White House, Senate break up with no … – Washington Post

With a deadline of Sept. 29 looming and Congress nearing their summer recess, the debt ceiling is primed to be a big issue when they return. Here's what you need to know. (Meg Kelly/The Washington Post)

Talks between the White House and the Senates top Republican and Democrat broke up Tuesday with no progress on raising the countrys debt ceiling, an impasse that threatens a financial crisis if left unresolved.

The Senate and House have 12 joint working days before Sept. 29, when the Treasury Department says it would no longer be able to pay all of the governments bills unless Congress acts. A default would likely set off a major disruption to the world financial system, witha stock market crash and surging interest rates that could send the economy into arecession.

Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin has urged Congress for months to raise the debt limit, but the White House has lacked a unified message and run into resistance on Capitol Hill, where Democrats and Republicans are at odds on key tax and spending issues.

During a hearing before the House Ways and Means Committee on May 24, Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin asked Congress to raise the debt ceiling before the summer. (House Ways and Means Committee)

Mnuchin met Tuesday morning with Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) and Senate Minority Leader Charles E. Schumer (D-N.Y.), searching for ways to raise the debt ceiling, but the gathering ended without any progress or even a clear sense of what the lawmakers need to deliver votes to raise the limit, according to three people briefed on the meeting who insisted on anonymity to speak candidly about the private discussions.

Several hours after the meeting, White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders implored Congress to act, illustrating how serious the Trump administration now believes this issue to be.

To ensure that we have robust economic growth and promote fiscal discipline, the Trump administration believes its important to raise the debt ceiling as soon as possible," she said at her daily press briefing. "Over the past two decades, members of Congress and presidents from both parties have raised debt ceiling 15 time and we look forward to working with Congress to ensure the full faith and credit of the United States government.

But lawmakers so far have shown little sign of engaging. The House of Representatives has already left town and will not return until after Labor Day.

The U.S. government spends more money than it brings in through revenue, creating anannual deficit. The Treasury Department borrows money to cover that gap by issuing debt, and it has always paid back the bondholders on time. According to one measurement, the government now has close to $20 trillion in debt.

Congress has established a cap on the amount of money the government can borrow, and Mnuchin has told Congress that this cap must be raised by Sept. 29 to ensure that the government can continue paying all of its bills.

After debt-ceiling talks with Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin on Aug. 1, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) said "we all know" it needs to be raised "to make sure America continues to never, ever default." (The Washington Post)

Republicans often resist efforts to raise the debt ceiling, making GOP leaders rely on Democrats to help them get enough votes to pass the bill. But substantive talks on how to raise the debt ceiling have not yet begun, and the breakdown at the Mnuchin meeting on Tuesday suggests a vote on the measure could come down to the wire late next month.

A number of Republicans, and even some within the White House, have suggested that there should be spending cuts that accompany any agreement to raise the debt ceiling, a condition that many Democrats have said they will not accept. Democrats, meanwhile, have also signaled they will not agree to raise the debt ceiling if Republicans plan to then add trillions of dollars in debt through a large tax-cut package.

President Barack Obama's administration and Congress almost failed in their efforts to raise the debt ceiling in 2011, and the uncertainty roiled financial markets. They ultimately agreed to a series of budget caps and other changes in exchange for raising the borrowing limit, but the Obama administration later adopted a position that it would not negotiate any future changes to the debt ceiling.

President Trump's administration has not had to raise the debt ceiling yet, and Trump has ridiculed Republicans in the past for agreeing to lift the borrowing limits when Obama was in office.

Progress made on pipeline to connect Exit 8 to Lowland – Citizentribune

Pre-construction has begun. A tentative timeline has been set.

Morristown Utility Systems general manager, Jody Wigington, said the construction and implementation of a new sewer line running from Exit 8 of Interstate 81 to the Lowland wastewater treatment plant just south of Exit 12 could be complete in as little as a year if no unforeseen challenges arise.

The project includes placing the new line, which will replace an old line nearing its capacity, and updating the treatment plant itself.

Both are a part of a consent order from the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation. With the order in place, Wigington said the projects have to be seen through to completion. However, because the work was needed and MUS consented, he said fewer penalty payments were required.

He said it was not only the only option but was the best option as the construction will benefit the city long-term.

Weve been a little limited with knowing we cant recruit certain types of wet business that uses a lot of water and waste water (to this area) with the existing line, Wigington said. This will open the door to welcome any type of customer the city might want to recruit. The only effect on our existing customers are the rate increases.

In addition to providing development opportunities for Exit 8, Wigington said this will allow for Exit 12 development.

Other rate increases may be coming down the pike for MUS electricity customers as a result of increases from the Tennessee Valley Authority, the supplier for MUS and other companies around the Lakeway Area and state.

In a presentation at the most recent MUS board of directors meeting, a TVA representative reported the organization has cut operating costs by reducing its footprint and has conserved fuel costs by using what is economical to produce the greatest amounts of power for its customers.

Despite this, the TVA has been unable to pay down its debt of nearly $26 billion as revenue continues to decrease.

In order to reduce the debt, TVA will be recommending a 1.5 percent rate adjustment per year at the retail level.

I think they do a good job. They have a balanced portfolio of plants and are able to pick the fuel that is most efficient to run, Wigington said. Meanwhile, TVA, for the first time in its history, is predicting negative load growth. We are barely moving, and if our industry hadnt done so many expansions in the last three or four years, we would be negative, too.

Wigington said load growth is the amount of electricity used by customers. It decreases with conservation.

We are seeing conservation across the board, he continued. The sewer rates are high, so people are conserving water use to keep the sewer bill down. With electricity, its primarily been lighting. LED lighting uses about 10 to 15 percent of the power incandescent lighting uses. At the same time, we have to have revenue.

I mean, were the company that wants to help people save and cut their bills, he said. Were sitting with flat sales here, and TVA has declining sales and declining revenue. Theyre not being about to reduce their debt, so theyre having to increase the rates to make up the difference.

During the board meeting, the TVA representative said the increases will most likely take place the next two years. After, TVA will revisit the long-term financial plan and make a decision to increase rates further or stabilize them.

Geron: SLOW Progress – Seeking Alpha

Introduction

From the formation of their collaboration in November 2014, Geron (NASDAQ:GERN) and Janssen, Johnson and Johnson's (JNJ) pharmaceutical arm have moved steadily forward in their efforts to prove the beneficial impact of imetelstat as a critical lifesaving therapy in the battle against certain cancers. Step by methodical step, they have advanced their understanding of imetelstats detailed clinical merits. Two clinical trials are gathering and assessing necessary data and have undergone formal clinical reviews.

Today they announced another advance. Insofar as it involves still more data collection, the market is showing frustration with the pace of progress. Shareholders can only wince and go forward. Todays announcement constitutes progress, albeit progress of the frustrating type for those impatient for final resolution.

Last night's press release from Geron, followed by this morning's conference call, provided new data points to consider in the lingering imetelstat saga. The conclusion I drew from the carefully scripted presentations was that all's well for those who have plenty of time and are willing to wait patiently while this multipart drama unfolds on its own time schedule.

My initial introduction to this latest bit of news was quite disconcerting. This morning I was checking out the stocks I follow and saw that Geron had taken a big hit. Then I saw a SA news headline, "Geron down 13% in early trading on extended timeline for imetelstat study, risk that Janssen will bail".

Oh no, I thought; the worst is happening. Then I realized after reading the release that this was nothing more than business as usual in the imetlstat world. Any statement about Janssen potentially bailing was mere surplusage. As is true in most, if not all such deals, the big dog has a retained right to bail. It is a background fact, akin to gravity...no need to keep repeating it, particularly in a news item. I guess the point that gave it piquancy was the stock price drop, suggesting something more was afoot. Not so.

Let me address the basics of the announcement and its significance as I see it.

First, the Imerge trial addresses patients with low-to-intermediate risk myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) who failed to respond to prior treatment with an erythropoiesis-stimulating agent.

Janssen has analyzed data from the Imerge trial and has determined that a subset of 13 patients show positive results at a higher rate than the remaining group of patients. These 13 patients share the commonality that they had not received prior treatment from "... a hypomethylating agent (HMA) or lenalidomide".

Janssen further determined that it should enroll an additional cohort of 20 patients to bring this subset of patients to 30, the number that it considers sufficient for its next analysis.

Rather than being negative or neutral, I consider this decision to be on the whole positive. It shows that Janssen is actively interested and engaged with the imetelstat data.

It also shows that this is going to be a lengthy process. The timing is uncertain but the press release states that active recruitment will begin in Q4, 2017. Certainly the work of recruiting, enrolling, processing and then analyzing data from 20 additional patients implies a considerable time lag.

In the written press release Geron states:

Detailed results for the original 32 patients in Part 1 of IMerge, including key secondary endpoints of hematologic improvement and rate of RBC-TI lasting at least 24 weeks, as well as duration of response and detailed safety information, will be submitted for presentation at a major medical conference. [Emphasis added]

The more Janssen interacts with imetelstat in the public sphere, the more encouraged I become that it will proceed to bring the therapy to market. Certainly its previous announcement of imetelstat as future blockbuster in its pipeline was a big positive indication. I take its intention to present Imerge results at a major medical conference in the same vein.

Janssen's Phase 2 IMbark trial, assessing imetelstat in patients with treatment-resistant intermediate/high risk myelofibrosis (MF) is on an entirely different track.

The IMbark trial will continue without modification. According to the press release:

Janssen will conduct an internal data review in Q1 2018 to enable a protocol amendment to allow long-term treatment and follow-up. Janssen will notify Geron earlier, probably in Q4, whether it intends to pursue development of imetelstat for any indication after a primary data analysis is done on IMbark (should start no later than the end of Q3)

As I see this, today's CC simply confirms the ongoing process to which Janssen has committed itself. As far as any tell on the efficacy of imetelstat, it has to be more on the positive side than the negative.

Although, when one looks at a five day chart of Geron's stock, it doesn't look positive.

What caused this violent stock reaction? I suspect it was impatience.

For those who are timing imetelstat's progress towards continuation by Janssen and ultimately FDA approval, today was something of a disappointment. Optimists have hoped that Janssen would take its next big step forward by issuing a continuation decision under its Geron collaboration agreement sometime in 2017 or early in 2018.

The following language from its press release suggests to me that Q3, 2018 is a more likely target date:

Continuation Decision

The Joint Steering Committee has agreed that the timing of the protocol-specified primary analysis for IMbark will begin upon the earlier of either a pre-specified number of deaths occurring in the trial or the end of the third quarter of 2018. Following completion of this primary analysis, which includes an assessment of potential survival benefit associated with imetelstat treatment, Janssen will notify Geron whether it elects to maintain the license rights and continue the development of imetelstat in any indication, i.e., the Continuation Decision.

Generally my own optimism for Geron's imetelstat prospects focuses more on the likelihood that Janssen proceed, rather than any expectation that it do so on an expedited basis. However, today's drop suggests that I may be in the minority on that score.

Geron had cash and equivalents of $121MM according to its Q1, 2017 10-Q. This was stated as sufficient for expected needs for at least one year. However, insofar as net cash expended during Q1, 2017 was <$8MM, Geron should not face a cash crunch if indeed Janssen waits to issue a continuation decision until 2018.

At the close of Geron's 8/1/2017 call, Geron announced that because of the proximity of its upcoming earnings release, it would not do an earnings CC this quarter. Rather, it said it would issue its earnings press release. Geron will next address investors at its presentation to the Cantor Fitzgerald Healthcare Conference taking place September 25-27, 2017.

Geron is soldiering boldly ahead as it works to bring the development of imetelstat to fruition. There are no guarantees in this drug approval business. However, Geron has managed to put itself on a path where it has reasonable prospects for a highly remunerative future.

Geron offers a binary bet on its imetelstat cancer therapy. Although I know from researching Geron articles that it has other irons in the fire, I also know these other irons have no current impact on Geron's stock price.

Today's announcement seems to have disturbed the market. I submit that it should not have done so. When Johnson and Johnson boasted about imetelstat's future prospects, it was referring to the year 2021.

Anyone who has counted on this playing out as near term story has been fooling themselves. Geron appears to have the cash resources to follow this to its conclusion. Investors in Geron should likewise consider that they are in it for the long haul.

Disclosure: I am/we are long GERN.

I wrote this article myself, and it expresses my own opinions. I am not receiving compensation for it (other than from Seeking Alpha). I have no business relationship with any company whose stock is mentioned in this article.

The Center For American Progress Is Releasing A Nearly 50-Page Report Claiming TrumpRussia Collusion – BuzzFeed News

A major progressive think tank wants Democrats to stop being shy about accusing the Trump campaign of colluding with Russia.

The Center for American Progress has written a nearly 50-page report for Democrats in Congress, making the case for collusion between President Donald Trumps campaign and Russia. The report, a draft of which was reviewed by BuzzFeed News ahead of its release Wednesday, makes the bold claim that it is now clear there was collusion and this is the biggest political scandal in American history.

CAPs report, which includes several appendices linking to news reports and quotes from the Trump administration, does not include any new information, but it does represent a push for a dramatic change of tone for Democrats in Congress.

We're ... trying to convey that its time to stop beating around the bush on Trumps collusion with Russia. There is a mountain of evidence that Trump and his associates colluded with Russia and its time to start saying so, Adam Jentleson, senior strategic adviser and former deputy chief of staff for Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid, told BuzzFeed News in an email.

We think its time to be a lot more forward-leading because the evidence is overwhelming.

This is a drastic departure from what most Democrats in Congress have been saying since Trump entered the White House in January. At least in public, most congressional Democrats have yielded on the side of caution, calling for further investigation before alleging actual collusion while at the same time emphasizing stories like the recent revelation that Donald Trump Jr. and others from the campaign spoke with a Russian lawyer last summer, in a meeting pitched to the presidents son with the promise of damaging information about Hillary Clinton.

I think the reason why were putting this report out is that we need to sort of face the facts of whats staring us in the face here, Max Bergmann, a senior fellow at CAP and author of the report, told BuzzFeed News. When you piece it all together and you lay out the facts, all the information that we know the picture becomes very clear. And what is clear is that the presidents campaign was willing to collude with Russians and did.

The Justice Department under special counsel Robert Mueller, the House and Senate intelligence committees and the Senate Judiciary Committee are all still conducting investigations on Russia interference in the US election and any involvement by the Trump campaign.

The draft of CAPs report lays out everything the public knows about how the Trump campaign and Russia interacted during the campaign based on information gathered from press reports and congressional testimony. According to CAP, the evidence should be enough for Democrats to argue the campaign colluded with Russia.

CAPs plan is to deliver the report to key offices on the Hill with the hope of giving Democrats the confidence to make a collusion argument. Jentleson said Democratic leadership, as well as members of the Judiciary and Intelligence committees in the House and Senate, will be receiving the report.
