The atheist Friedrich Nietzsche argued that moral, religious, and metaphysical convictions lead to nihilism's corrosive effects; cause the collapse of meaning, relevance, purpose, and precipitate the greatest crisis in human history.[1] An example of nihilism would be the question reportedly posed by Jared Loughner to a congresswoman whom he allegedly later shot:[2]

German political philosopher Leo Strauss argued that modern liberalism has within it a tendency towards nihilism. Faith in God is the opposite of nihilism. In government and politics, another example of the opposite of nihilism is the concept of natural rights, as formulated in the Declaration of Independence.

Friedrich Nietzsche saw two kinds of nihilism in the world; pessimistic and joyous. Pessimistic nihilism was that created by the death of God in the minds of men, and corresponds to the idea that life is without meaning or value. Joyous nihilism was that experienced by those few who, like him, experienced the loss of an externally created and imposed moral structure as a liberation and not a great loss, and was the seed that let the herald Nietzsche proclaim the coming of the bermensch.

NATO

NATO is based on the North Atlantic Treaty, which provides the organization a framework. The treaty provides that an armed attack against one or more of NATO`s member nations shall be considered an attack against them all.* NATO is headquartered in Brussels, Belgium. The organization was formed in 1949. Many nations joined NATO even Iceland, the only member without a military force.

The organization was originally formed out of the fear that the Soviet Union would ally militarily with Eastern European nations, i.e. the Warsaw Pact, and thus become a threat to Western Europe and the United States. In short, the alliance is an association of free states united in their determination to preserve their security through mutual guarantees and stable relations with other countries.

From 1945 to 1949, Europe faced the crucial need for economic reconstruction. Western European countries and their North American allies viewed with apprehension the expansionist policies and methods of the U.S.S.R. Having fulfilled their own wartime commitments, and desiring to reduce their defense establishments and demobilize forces, Western governments became increasingly alarmed as it became clear that the Soviet leadership intended to maintain its own military forces at full strength.

Furthermore, in view of the Soviet Communist Party`s avowed ideology, it was evident that appeals to the United Nations Charter, and international settlements reached at the end of the war, would not assure democratic states their autonomy. The rise of nondemocratic governments in many central and eastern European countries, and the resultant repression of opposition parties and basic human rights, raised more alarm in the West.

Between 1947 and 1949, a series of extraordinary political events brought matters to a head. They included direct threats to the sovereignty of Norway, Greece, Turkey and other countries, the June 1948 coup in Czechoslovakia, and the illegal blockade of Berlin that began in April of the same year. The signing of the Brussels Treaty in March 1948 marked the commitment of five Western European countries Belgium, France, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom to develop a common defense system and strengthen the ties among them in a manner that would enable them to resist ideological, political and military threats to their security. Later, Denmark, Iceland, Italy, Norway and Portugal were invited by the Brussels Treaty powers to become participants in that process.

Then followed negotiations with the United States and Canada on the creation of a single North Atlantic alliance based on security guarantees and mutual commitments between Europe and North America. The alliance would become the transatlantic link by which the security of North America was permanently tied to the security of Europe.

Negotiations culminated in the signing of the treaty in April 1949, entered into freely by each country following public debate and due parliamentary process. The treaty a legal and contractual basis for the alliance was established within the framework of Article 51 of the United Nations Charter, which reaffirms the inherent right of independent states to individual or collective defense. The treaty requires of each of them not to enter into any other international commitment that might conflict with its provisions. The preamble to the treaty states that the aim of the allies is to promote peaceful and friendly relations in the North Atlantic area."

However, at the time of the treatys signing, the immediate purpose of NATO was to defend its members against a potential threat resulting from the policies and growing military capacity of the Soviet Union. The treaty created a common security system based on a partnership among the 12 countries. Others joined later:

The means by which the alliance carries out its security policies includes the maintenance of a sufficient military capability to prevent war and to provide for effective defense; an overall capability to manage crises affecting the security of its members; and active promotion of dialogue with other nations. The alliance performs the following fundamental security tasks:

A continent evolves

NATO has worked since its inception for the establishment of a just and lasting peaceful order in Europe based on common values of democracy, human rights and the rule of law. That central alliance objective has taken on renewed significance since the end of the Cold War because, for the first time in the post- World War II history of Europe, the prospect of its achievement has become a reality as embodied by the European Union.

From time to time, the alliance met at the summit level with heads of state and governments participating. Their direct participation in the process of taking decisions by consensus, raised the public profile of such meetings and bestowed on them increased historical significance.

By 1991, the major transformation of international security at the end of the 1980s was dictating the shape of the new NATO that would emerge over the next few years. The first of a series of four summit meetings that would plot the course of the alliances adaptation to the coming decade took place in Rome in November 1991. It would be followed by another summit meeting in Brussels in January 1994, two further meetings in Madrid in July 1997, and in Washington in April 1999.

The world has seen many changes since the inception of NATO. NATO peacekeeping forces maintain vigilance at hot spots around the world. Kosovo, Afghanistan and Somalia all enjoy a NATO presence. NATO announced on June 9, 2005, that it would help the African Union (AU) expand its peacekeeping mission in Darfur, Sudan, by airlifting additional AU peacekeepers into the region and assisting with training.

The discussion was a healthy one, the official said. It created more urgency and it also allowed the summit meeting to end with an agreed message on improving spending, far better than an outcome where Mr. Trump was vocally unhappy and the others were perceived not to care, he added.

Indeed, Mr. Trump came away mollified, broadcasting his own sense of triumph, though he had said the day before that member nations had to reach the 2 percent goal immediately, and that the target should rise to 4 percent.

In the end I think the meeting was less divisive than feared, said Alexander Vershbow, a former NATO deputy secretary general. I think its the reality show that the president loves. There wasnt enough drama, so Trump has a tantrum, knocks over the table, and allies are used as props in his reality show.

That being said, he added, NATO goes on.

The substance of the meeting, he and others said, is in the communiqu. That document, a product of nearly a year of work, commits the alliance to a stronger deterrent against Russia, more efforts on cybersecurity, a strengthening of the alliances southern strategy and a new training program for Iraq, Tunisia and Libya. It also called for nations to devote at least 20 percent of their growing military budgets to equipment and modernization.

The United States pays 22 percent of NATOs budget, which covers things like offices, salaries and some equipment used in joint operations. According to the International Institute for Strategic Studies, of the $603 billion that the United States spends on the military each year, about $31 billion goes to Europe.

In the end, some analysts criticized Mr. Trump for fabricating a ruckus that, however much it might serve his political ends, was harmful to the alliance.

NATO always had a good story to tell at this summit, with the communiqu reflecting a robust and resilient alliance that is making real progress on a range of challenges, said Amanda Sloat, a former State Department official now at the Brookings Institution. Trumps belligerent tweets and taunts unfortunately overshadowed what should have been a straightforward message of success.

First Amendment and free spech: When it applies and … – CNN

That's it. That's the entirety of our Constitution's First Amendment, the central tenet of our American way of life that gets dragged out every time someone's banned from Twitter.

There's a lot going on in those few sentences, and it's important to know when and how it applies to common situations -- and, equally as important, when it doesn't.

Let's look at some common First Amendment arguments; illuminated and debunked by a constitutional expert.

This is not a First Amendment issue though plenty of people think it is.

This scenario illustrates one of the biggest misconceptions people have about the First Amendment. Bottom line: It protects you from the government punishing or censoring or oppressing your speech. It doesn't apply to private organizations. "So if, say, Twitter decides to ban you, you'd be a bit out of luck," Nott says. "You can't make a First Amendment claim in court."

However, while it's not unconstitutional, if private platforms outright ban certain types of protected speech, it sets an uncomfortable precedent for the values of free speech.

If you work for a private company, it's probably not a First Amendment issue.

"It's the company's right to discipline their employees' speech," Nott says.

If you're a government employee, it's complicated.

Institutions like police departments, public schools and local government branches can't restrict employee's free speech rights, but they do need to assure that such speech doesn't keep the employee from doing their job. It's definitely a balancing act, and the rise of social media has made it harder for such institutions to regulate their employee's speech in a constitutional manner.

If it's a private institution, it's probably not a First Amendment issue.

If it's a public institution, the lines can get blurry.

"If you invite someone to speak on your campus and are a public university, you have to respect their First Amendment rights," Nott says. That doesn't mean you can't put regulations on a speech, like dictating the time, place, venue and suggestions for subject matter. It just means you can't do so in a way that discriminates against a certain point of view.

If students protesting play a hand in moving or canceling a speaker, that presents a different free speech challenge.

"If a speaker were to take legal action for being blocked from speaking, they can't do it against the students. You can't take constitutional action against a group of private citizens," she adds.

Such a complaint would have to go against the school, for allowing the constitutional breach to happen.

Definitely a First Amendment issue.

But, like pretty much everything in law, there are exceptions and nuances.

"It's definitely unconstitutional, unless you are trying to incite people to violence with your speech," Nott says. Even then, it needs to be a true threat -- one that has immediacy and some sort of actual intent.

It's a private company, so it's not a First Amendment issue.

There's that refrain again: Private companies, like social media sites, can do whatever they want.

But regulating conversations and posts online is a delicate balance for social media giants like Facebook.

"That says, if you are an internet company and you have some way for people to post or leave comments, you are not liable for what they do," Nott says. This covers things like obscenity, violence and threats.

The problem is, this protection often butts up against the enforcement of basic community standards.

"Facebook is under enormous pressure to take down, not just violent and illegal content, but fake news," Nott says. "And the more it starts to play editor for its own site, the more likely it is to lose that Section 230 protection."

This is a First Amendment issue, at the very least in spirit.

"Symbolic speech is protected by the constitution," Nott says. "In essence, you have the right to not speak. You have the right to silence."

In theory, a private employer could require you to stand for the anthem or say the Pledge of Allegiance, but such a requirement may run afoul of the Civil Rights Act. Even in schools, where there have been some cases of students being singled out for sitting or kneeling for the anthem, it would be hard to provide justification for punishment.

"This is an act of political speech, the most protected type of speech," Nott says. "It's completely not disruptive because it's silent." Plus, it is buttressed by court cases that have decided there is no requirement to salute the flag.

A First Amendment issue -- usually.

You are fully within your rights to record the police doing their job in public. And if you get arrested while doing so, your constitutional rights are being violated.

This is, unless you were doing something unlawful at the time of your arrest.

In a heated situation with police, that can also become a gray area. Physical assault or threats could obviously get you arrested, but what about if you were just yelling at the police while recording, say, to get them to stop an act or to pay attention?

"That's tough," Nott says. "If you were disturbing the peace, you can get arrested for that, or for other things. But the bottom line is it's not a crime to record police activities in a public space."

If it's a student publication, it's a First Amendment issue.

Nott points to a landmark Supreme Court cases from 1969 that has acted as a standard for cases involving free speech at public universities and colleges. That's Tinker v. Des Moines Independent Community School District, which you can read more about below.

Another case, Bazaar v. Fortune from 1973, helps tailor these guidelines to the student press by stating that schools cannot act as "private publishers" just because they fund a student publication or program. In other words, they can't punish the publication -- whether it be through student firings, budget cuts or withdrawals or a ban -- just for printing or broadcasting something they don't like.

Now, a gentle reminder that this is just for PUBLIC schools. All together now: Private institutions can (usually) do what they want!

Nanotechnology is the broad scientific field that encompasses nanomedicine. It involves the creation and use of materials and devices at the level of molecules and atoms, which are the parts of matter that combine to make molecules. Non-medical applications of nanotechnology now under development include tiny semiconductor chips made out of strings of single molecules and miniature computers made out of DNA, the material of our genes. Federally supported research in this area, conducted under the rubric of the National Nanotechnology Initiative, is ongoing with coordinated support from several agencies.

For hundreds of years, microscopes have offered scientists a window inside cells. Researchers have used ever more powerful visualization tools to extensively categorize the parts and sub-parts of cells in vivid detail. Yet, what scientists have not been able to do is to exhaustively inventory cells, cell parts, and molecules within cell parts to answer questions such as, "How many?" "How big?" and "How fast?" Obtaining thorough, reliable measures of quantity is the vital first step of nanomedicine.

As part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Common Fund [nihroadmap.nih.gov], the NIH [nih.gov] has established a handful of nanomedicine centers. These centers are staffed by a highly interdisciplinary scientific crew, including biologists, physicians, mathematicians, engineers and computer scientists. Research conducted over the first few years was spent gathering extensive information about how molecular machines are built.

For example, one center is trying to return at least limited vision to people who have lost their sight. Others are trying to develop treatments for severe neurological disorders, cancer, and a serious blood disorder.

The availability of innovative, body-friendly nanotools that depend on precise knowledge of how the body's molecular machines work, will help scientists figure out how to build synthetic biological and biochemical devices that can help the cells in our bodies work the way they were meant to, returning the body to a healthier state.

Born in Englewood, New Jersey, in 1902, Dr. Lamont graduated first from Phillips Exeter Academy in 1920, then magna cum laude from Harvard University in 1924. He did graduate work at Oxford and at Columbia, where he received his Ph.D. in philosophy in 1932.

He was director of the American Civil Liberties Union from 1932 to 1954, and is currently chairman of the national Emergency Civil Liberties Committee. A leading proponent of the individual's rights under the Constitution, he has won famous court decisions over Senator Joseph McCarthy, the CIA, and in 1965 a Supreme Court ruling against censorship of incoming mail by the U.S. Postmaster General.

Dr. Lamont has long been associated with Humanism, and authored the standard text on the subject, The Philosophy of Humanism, in 1949. He taught at Columbia, Cornell, and Harvard Universities, and at the New School for Social Research. Corliss Lamont is currently honorary president of the American Humanist Association.

The authors advocate changing our lifestyles, by examples from pioneers in history who like Luigi Cornaro, born in Venice, Italy in 1464, refocused his intentions from living glutinously near death at 37 to fulfilling his quest for a healthy long life, adding 66 robust years remaining industrious to the very end, dying peacefully in 1567 at 103. Other detailed information on plants, minerals, history-philosophy and nutrition is for the serious student, as its readability may be a bit high for the unfamiliar. The gift of the authors is in the wisdom that what we don't know defines what we are certain about. The same themes repeat throughout the text so the message is driven home regarding calorie restriction increasing immortality through nutrition and supplementation. Worth reading and inspirational! Safety | Total Solar Eclipse 2017

Looking directly at the sun is unsafe except during the brief total phase of a solar eclipse (totality), when the moon entirely blocks the suns bright face, which will happen only within the narrow path of totality (https://go.nasa.gov/2pC0lhe).

The only safe way to look directly at the uneclipsed or partially eclipsed sun is through special-purpose solar filters, such as eclipse glasses (example shown at left) or hand-held solar viewers. Homemade filters or ordinary sunglasses, even very dark ones, are not safe for looking at the sun; they transmit thousands of times too much sunlight. Refer to the American Astronomical Society (AAS) Reputable Vendors of Solar Filters & Viewers page for a list of manufacturers and authorized dealers of eclipse glasses and handheld solar viewers verified to be compliant with the ISO 12312-2 international safety standard for such products.

If you are within the path of totality (https://go.nasa.gov/2pC0lhe), remove your solar filter only when the moon completely covers the suns bright face and it suddenly gets quite dark. Experience totality, then, as soon as the bright sun begins to reappear, replace your solar viewer to look at the remaining partial phases.

Outside the path of totality, you mustalwaysuse a safe solar filterto view the sun directly.

If you normally wear eyeglasses, keep them on. Put your eclipse glasses on over them, or hold your handheld viewer in front of them.

Note: If your eclipse glasses or viewers are compliant with the ISO 12312-2 safety standard, you may look at the uneclipsed or partially eclipsed Sun through them for as long as you wish. Furthermore, if the filters aren't scratched, punctured, or torn, you may reuse themindefinitely. Some glasses/viewers are printed with warnings stating that you shouldn't look through them for more than 3 minutes at a time and that you should discard them if they are more than 3 years old. Such warnings are outdated and do not apply to eclipse viewers compliant with the ISO 12312-2 standard adopted in 2015. To make sure you get (or got) your eclipse glasses/viewers from a supplier of ISO-compliant products, see the American Astronomical Society (AAS) Reputable Vendors of Solar Filters & Viewerspage.

An alternative method for safe viewing of the partially eclipsed sun is pinhole projection. For example, cross the outstretched, slightly open fingers of one hand over the outstretched, slightly open fingers of the other, creating a waffle pattern. With your back to the sun, look at your hands shadow on the ground. The little spaces between your fingers will project a grid of small images on the ground, showing the sun as a crescent during the partial phases of the eclipse. Or just look at the shadow of a leafy tree during the partial eclipse; you'll see the ground dappled with crescent Suns projected by the tiny spaces between the leaves.

If you have an old welder's helmet around the house and are thinking of using it to view the Sun, make sure you know the filter's shade number. If it's less than 12 (and it probably is), don't eventhinkabout using it to look at the Sun. Manypeople find the Sun too bright even in a Shade 12 filter, and some find the Sun too dim in a Shade 14 filter but Shade 13 filters are uncommon and can be hard to find. Telescopes with Solar Filters Eclipses are best viewed directly when magnified, which means a telescope with a solar filter or solar telescopes. These will give you a magnified view that will clearly show the progress of an eclipse. Never look through a telescope without a solar filter on the large end of the scope. Pinhole and Related Projection Methods -- Pinhole projectors and other projection techniques are a safe, indirect viewing technique for observing an image of the sun. These provide a popular way for viewing solar eclipses. One viewing technique is to project an image of the sun onto a white surface with a projecting telescope. The Geeksplainer: Cyberpunk – Geek.com

A key tenet of geek culture is knowledge we judge and are judged based on our encyclopedic knowledge of games, sci-fi, comics, anime, collectibles and more. But its impossible for one human being to know everything, no matter how many chips you get put in your brain. Thats where we come in. With this series of Geeksplainers, well give you everything you need to know to get up to speed on some of the most complicated, intense subjects in the pop culture universe. This installment: jack in, hack the Gibson, and learn everything you need to know about cyberpunk.

As technology changes, so does science fiction. In the 1950s and 60s, tales of rocket-powered explorations to other planets dominated the industry. With the introduction and eventual ubiquity of networked computers, sci-fi minds started exploring the ramifications of that data-driven world in the early 1980s. As science fiction matured, it started to wrestle with issues of the day like drug culture and expanded consciousness, prejudice and class issues. Cyberpunk gave creators space to explore characters who werent pioneering heroes, but marginal losers ground down by the pressures of the future.

Over the last few decades, cyberpunk has morphed and changed with technology, always keeping one baleful eye on the future. As networked communication has become a bigger part of the ordinary persons life, the focus on hackers as denizens of the cyberworld has faded a bit, replaced by concerns about privacy, identity and the forthcoming singularity where artificial intelligence gains consciousness. Certain values still hold, though: cyberpunk is still grimy, uncompromising and unromantic.

William Gibsons 1984 novel Neuromancer is widely regarded as the touchstone for cyberpunk fiction. In it, hacker Henry Dorsett Case is hired for one last job working for an ex-military officer and discovering the creation of a powerful AI that could change the world forever. It painted a picture of a corporatist future where powerful factions worked against each other with no regard for the public health or safety and the people who got caught in its gears. Dozens of derivative works followed in its wake.

Two years earlier, director Ridley Scott dropped the movie that did more than any other to establish the visual aesthetic of cyberpunk. Blade Runner dropped viewers into a futuristic Los Angeles choked with smog and lit with neon, as a group of replicants escape their servitude and impending death to run loose on Earth. Harrison Ford stars as ex-cop Rick Deckard tasked with hunting them down. So many of the key touchstones of cyberpunk are here malevolent corporations, shifting humanity, morally questionable technology comes from this movie.

Fire up your Kindle, because there is a lot of top-flight literary cyberpunk to process. After Neuromancer, which should be your first stop, try these.

Neal Stephensons Snow Crash is more than a little silly in hindsight, but its still worth reading to see what the early 90s thought the future would be like. Hiro Protagonist (I know) is a pizza deliveryman-slash-hacker in 21st century Los Angeles who spends a good deal of time in the Metaverse, an online virtual reality that resembles nothing more than Second Life. When a virus in the Metaverse starts causing brain damage to users in the real world, things start popping.

For short stories, the 1986 Bruce Sterling-edited anthology Mirrorshades is still well worth picking up. Some of the decades most influential cyberpunk authors weighed in here, including William Gibson, Rudy Rucker, Marc Laidlaw and other vital voices working at the intersection of science fiction and tech.

Modern cyberpunk is probably best represented by the successful Takeshi Kovacs novels of Richard K. Morgan, starting with Altered Carbon. As technology becomes increasingly linked to biology as opposed to silicon circuits and virtual spaces, the new wave is all about body hacking, consciousness transplanting and other grisly concepts.

1999s The Matrix was an absolute mindblower when it dropped the Wachowskis deftly leveraged the concept of existence as simulation and crafted a huge mythology around it. The two sequels didnt really pack the same cultural impact, but in hindsight theyre not terrible each boasts at least one incredible hyper-kinetic action sequence and some fun performances. The first one is definitely a must-watch though.

Katheryn Bigelows 1995 Strange Days wasnt a success on release, but history has been very kind to it and its now a definite cult classic. A new technology called SQUID allows you to record memories and experiences on disc and let others relive them. Former LAPD detective Lenny Nero gets caught up after a robbery and discovers a seedy underworld of blackmail, rough sex and nasty tech.

David Croenenbergs eXistenZ came out the same year as The Matrix, but the two movies couldnt have more different takes on the concept of realistic virtual worlds. Croenenbergs VR game is so immersive that it opens up a dark and twisted Russian nesting doll, where players can never be sure if theyre in or out. Like all of the Canadian iconoclasts films, its a real head-scratcher.

Over in Japan, Shinya Tsukamotos 1989 Tetsuo: The Iron Man presented a much more horror-focused take on the genre, telling the story of a salaryman afflicted by a curse that slowly transforms his body into metal. The grisly creep of technology to dominate our lives is the metaphor here, and its made horrifyingly literal.

Obviously were going to have to revisit this once CD Projekt Reds Cyberpunk 2077 comes out, but video games have explored cyberpunk themes for decades. Here are the ones youll want to try out.

Hideo Kojimas Metal Gear Solid series has flirted with technological concepts common to cyberpunk, but the maverick designer really delved into the genre in one of his earliest games, 1988s Snatcher. Heavily inspired by Blade Runner, this graphic adventure follows investigator Gillian Seed as he investigates a plague of bioengineered humanoids killing people and taking their place. This game was wildly ambitious for its era and pushed envelopes with grisly gore and complex moral quandaries.

Probably the premier franchise in cyberpunk gaming is Deus Ex. The first game in the series was released in 2000 and put players in the augmented shoes of government agent JC Denton as he tries to stem the spread of a genetically engineered virus. Designer Warren Spector was burnt out on traditional sci-fi and fantasy, so he built something very grounded and different. The original Deus Ex was tremendously influential on PC gaming especially with its focus on player choice and adaptability, and sequels have further expanded its world and mythology.

The modern cyberpunk wave has brought some really cool new entries into the canon. Some of our favorites include violent top-down shooter Ruiner, turn-based strategy heist game Invisible, Inc. and bartending simulator (its bizarre how many cyberpunk stories have scenes set in bars) Va-11 Hall-A. These games each touch on a different aspect of the genre in interesting ways.

One of the earliest is Frank Millers 1983 limited series Ronin, which tapped into the genres Asian fixation for a story of a Japanese samurai reincarnated 800 years later in a futuristic New York. The villain is an artificial intelligence that controls biocircuitry, and Millers art is in a fascinating place that takes inspiration from manga, European legends like Moebius and his noir background.

A few years later, Masamune Shirow would begin Ghost In The Shell, one of the most influential Japanese cyberpunk works. Major Makoto Kusanagi is a cyborg, grievously injured as a child and raised in an entirely artificial body. Shirow combines incredible kinetic action sequences with remarkably deep meditations on the nature of personhood. The spin-off anime is also great, but its fine to avoid the 2017 American movie.

Cyberpunk is having a bit of a resurgence for a number of reasons. First, were more conscious than ever about the dangers of the digital world and more dependent on it. Youre reading this on a portal to all of the information in the world (unless you printed it out to read on the toilet), and the consequences of that network failing would be literally apocalyptic. Questions of digital identity and privacy are now a big deal.

Additionally, a number of the technologies that were key to early cyberpunk fiction have finally become fact. Virtual reality is now affordable and portable enough that you can use it on your phone, and augmented reality lets you overlay the digital world over the real one. What seemed fantastic in the days of CRTs and 300 baud modems is now a normal part of life.

The War on Drugs was formed by musicians Kurt Vile and Adam Granduciel after they had both moved from Oakland and back to Philadelphia. Both had similar interests and had especially connected through their appreciation of Bob Dylan. This led to the two, recording, writing and even performing together. Through this instant connection and chemistry, The War on Drugs was born.

Early in the career of the band they had many accompanying musicians but none were official members, Vile and Granduciel then decided to settle official members of the band. These members included: Charlie Hall as the Drummer/Organist, Kyle Lloyd as drummer and Dave Hartley would be the bass player of the band.

In 2008 The War On Drugs gave away their EP 'Barrel of Batteries' for free.

After the release of their debut album 'Wagonwheel Blues' and the European tour which followed,founding member of the band Kurt Vile, had decided to leave so that he could focus on his solo projects. Following Vile leaving other members followed suit, those being: Charlie Hall and Kyle Lloyd by 2008.

Following the departure of key members, the band in 2008 now consisted of members: Adam Granducial, David Hall and Mike Zhangi (who would leave in 2010). By 2012 the bands lineup consisted of: Adam Granducial, Patrick Berkery, Robbie Bennett and David Hall.

2011 saw the release of The War On Drugs second album 'Slave Ambient' this generated widespread critical acclaim as it managed to receive 7 out of 10 from 'Spin', 'BBC Music' gave it a favourable rating and it received an A- grade from 'The A.V. Club'.

As of 2014 the current members of the band are: Adam Granducial on vocals, Dave Hartley on bass guitar, Robbie Bennett on keyboards and Charlie Hall on drum.
