The Minerva Reefs ( Tongan : Ongo Teleki ), briefly de facto independent in 1972 as the Republic of Minerva , are a group of two submerged atolls located in the Pacific Ocean south of Fiji and Tonga . The reefs were named after the whaleship Minerva , wrecked on what became known as South Minerva after setting out from Sydney in 1829. Many other ships would follow, for example the Strathcona , which was sailing north soon after completion in Auckland in 1914. In both cases most of the crew saved themselves in whaleboats or rafts and reached the Lau Islands in Fiji . Of some other ships, however, no survivors are known.

The reefs were first discovered by Captain John Nicholson of the LMS Haweis December 1818 as reported in the Sydney Gazette 30 January 1819. [19] Capt H. M. Denham of the HMS Herald surveyed the reefs in 1854 and renamed them after the Australian whaler Minerva which ran aground on South Minerva Reef on 9 September 1829.

The Republic of Minerva was a micronation consisting of the Minerva Reefs. It was one of the few modern attempts at creating a sovereign micronation on the reclaimed land of an artificial island in 1972. The architect was Las Vegas real estate millionaire and political activist Michael Oliver , who went on to other similar attempts in the following decade. Lithuanian-born Oliver formed a syndicate, the Ocean Life Research Foundation, which allegedly had some $100,000,000 for the project and had offices in New York City and London . They anticipated a libertarian society with "no taxation, welfare, subsidies, or any form of economic interventionism ." In addition to tourism and fishing, the economy of the new nation would include light industry and other commerce.

In 1971, barges loaded with sand arrived from Australia, bringing the reef level above the water and allowing construction of a small tower and flag. The Republic of Minerva issued a declaration of independence on 19 January 1972 in letters to neighboring countries and even created their own currency. In February 1972, Morris C. Davis was elected as Provisional President of the Republic of Minerva.

The declaration of independence, however, was greeted with great suspicion by other countries in the area. A conference of the neighboring states ( Australia , New Zealand , Tonga , Fiji , Nauru , Samoa , and territory of Cook Islands ) met on 24 February 1972 at which Tonga made a claim over the Minerva Reefs and the rest of the states recognized its claim.

On 15 June 1972, the following proclamation was published in a Tongan government gazette :

A Tongan expedition was sent to enforce the claim the following day. It reached North Minerva on 18 June 1972. The Flag of the Tonga was raised on 19 June 1972 on North Minerva and on South Minerva on 21 June 1972. [20]

Tongas claim was recognized by the South Pacific Forum in September 1972. Meanwhile, Provisional President Davis was fired by founder Michael Oliver and the project collapsed in confusion. According to Glen Raphael, "The chief reason that the Minerva project failed was that the libertarians who were involved did not want to fight for their territory." [21] Nevertheless, Minerva was referred to in O. T. Nelson 's post-apocalyptic children's novel The Girl Who Owned a City , published in 1975, as an example of an invented utopia that the book's protagonists could try to emulate.

In 1982, a group of Americans led again by Morris C. Bud Davis tried to occupy the reefs, but were forced off by Tongan troops after three weeks. In recent years several groups have allegedly sought to re-establish Minerva. No known claimant group since 1982 has made any attempt to take possession of the Minerva Reefs. According to Reason , Minerva has been "more or less reclaimed by the sea". [22]

In 2005, Fiji made it clear that they did not recognize any maritime water claims by Tonga to the Minerva Reefs under the UNCLOS agreements . In November 2005, Fiji lodged a complaint with the International Seabed Authority concerning Tonga's maritime waters claims surrounding Minerva. Tonga lodged a counter claim, and the Principality of Minerva micronation claimed to have lodged a counter claim. In 2010 the Fijian Navy destroyed navigation lights at the entrance to the lagoon. In late May 2011, they again destroyed navigational equipment installed by Tongans. In early June 2011, two Royal Tongan Navy ships were sent to the reef to replace the equipment, and to reassert Tonga's claim to the territory. Fijian Navy ships in the vicinity reportedly withdrew as the Tongans approached. [23] [24]

In an effort to settle the dispute, the government of Tonga revealed a proposal in early July 2014 to give the Minerva Reefs to Fiji in exchange for the Lau Group of islands. [25] In a statement to the Tonga Daily News , Lands Minister Lord Maafu Tukuiaulahi announced that he would make the proposal to Fiji's Minister for Foreign Affairs , Ratu Inoke Kubuabola . Some Tongans have Lauan ancestors and many Lauans have Tongan ancestors; Tonga's Lands Minister is named after Enele Ma'afu , the Tongan Prince who originally claimed parts of Lau for Tonga. [19]

Area: North Reef diameter about 5.6 kilometres (3.5 mi), South Reef diameter of about 4.8 kilometres (3.0 mi). Terrain: two ( atolls ) on dormant volcanic seamounts.

Both Minerva Reefs are about 435 kilometres (270 mi) southwest of the Tongatapu Group. The atolls are on a common submarine platform from 549 to 1,097 metres (1,801 to 3,599 ft) below the surface of the sea. North Minerva is circular in shape and has a diameter of about 5.6 kilometres (3.5 mi). There is a small sand bar around the atoll, awash at high tide, with a small entrance into the flat lagoon with a somewhat deep harbor. South Minerva is parted into The East Reef and the West Reef, both circular with a diameter of about 4.8 kilometres (3.0 mi). Remnants of shipwrecks and platforms remain on the atolls, plus functioning navigation beacons.

Geologically, Minerva Reef is of a limestone base formed from uplifted coral formations elevated by now-dormant volcanic activity.

The climate is basically subtropical with a distinct warm period (DecemberApril), during which the temperatures rise above 32 C (90 F), and a cooler period (MayNovember), with temperatures rarely rising above 27 C (80 F). The temperature increases from 23 C to 27 C (74 F to 80 F), and the annual rainfall is from 170 to 297 centimeters (67117 in.) as one moves from Cardea in the south to the more northerly islands closer to the Equator. The mean daily humidity is 80 percent.

Both North and South Minerva Reefs are used as anchorages by private yachts traveling between New Zealand and Tonga or Fiji. [28] While waiting for favourable weather for the approximately 800-mile (1,300 km) passage to New Zealand, excellent scuba diving , snorkelling, fishing and clamming can be enjoyed. North Minerva (Tongan: Teleki Tokelau ) offers the more protected anchorage, with a single, easily negotiated, west-facing pass that offers access to the large, calm lagoon with extensive sandy areas. South Minerva (Tongan: Teleki Tonga ) is in shape similar to an infinity symbol , with its eastern lobe partially open to the ocean on the northern side.

The Tuaikaepau ('Slow But Sure'), a Tongan vessel on its way to New Zealand, became famous when it struck the reefs on 7 July 1962. This 15-metre (49 ft) wooden vessel was built in 1902 at the same yard as the Strathcona . The crew and passengers survived by living in the remains of a Japanese freighter. There they remained for three months in miserable circumstances and several of them died. Finally Captain Tvita Fifita decided to get help. Without tools, he built a small boat from the wood left over from his ship. With this raft, named Malolelei ('Good Day'), he and a few of the stronger crew members sailed to Fiji in one week.

The North and South Minerva Reefs are two submerged atolls between Tonga and Fiji to the north, and New Zealand to the south.

At the beginning and end of the tropical cyclone season, the Minervas are a frequent rest stop for sailboats headed to or from New Zealand.

Both Tonga and Fiji claim the Minervas. The dispute has yet to be resolved.

Both are essentially rings of coral enclosing central lagoons. At low tide, the reefs are partially above sea level and provide smooth water in the lagoon for anchoring or landing. At high tide waves of two to three feet may occur in the lagoons if it is windy and the surrounding seas are six feet or more in height.

The only way to visit them is by boat or seaplane. Both North and South Minerva have wide passes through their reefs allowing entry for deep draft sailboats. However, South Minerva has coral heads in the pass and in the anchorage area as well. The coral heads are not difficult to avoid in good seeing conditions, however in rough seas and squally, cloudy weather it can be dicey. North Minerva's pass and lagoon are both clear of coral heads

Dinghies and kayaks are the most viable options. In North Minerva the sandy lagoon bottom shallows near the inner edge of the reef. In most places it is not difficult to anchor a dinghy in 10 feet or so and step off on to the reef at low tide.

There was at one time the foundation of a lighted beacon at the south end of North Minerva.

The snorkeling along the inner edges of the reefs is excellent and varies as one goes around them. The Blacktip and Whitetip reef sharks are pretty timid.

Crayfish, or tropical lobster, are plentiful. Tuna, jack and other reef fish are easy to catch in the passes or along the outside of the reef.

North Minerva can be a haven of refuge in winds up to 35-40 knots assuming normal tides and absence of storm surge. Anything beyond that and it would be better to head for Fiji, Tonga or New Zealand as the season dictates.

What Facebooks Cryptocurrency Could Look Like – Barron’s

Facebook is reportedly developing a kind of cryptocurrency that will allow people to make transactions within its platform. The plan has leaked out in news reports, though Facebook itself has stayed mum about what exactly its up to.

On Friday, an analyst predicted that the Facebook coin (Facecoin, perhaps?) would actually look more like one of the large public cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin or Ethereum and less like the internal-payment or loyalty systems that companies like Starbucks (ticker: SBUX) use. And she expects it to benefit major payments players like Visa (V), Mastercard (MA), and PayPal Holdings (PYPL) rather than replace them.

Last week, The Wall Street Journal reported that Facebook (FB) is working on an initiative called Project Libra to create a coin that Facebook users could send to each other. The so-called stablecoin would be pegged to the value of a government-backed currency like the U.S. dollar so it wouldnt fluctuate in price as wildly as Bitcoin.

Asked about the project, a Facebook spokeswoman sent Barrons a statement on Friday saying that the company is exploring ways to leverage the power of blockchain technology. This new small team is exploring many different applications. We dont have anything further to share.

In the absence of more concrete information, analysts are starting to speculate. Moffett Nathansons Lisa Ellis wrote that the Facebook coin could simply end up being an internal payment and behavior-reward system that the social-media giant uses to encourage people to watch ads on its platforms to earn coins. But she thinks its likelier that Facebook creates a more-public coin thats governed by an independent board. (Ethereum, for one, has a foundation thats designed to work something like this.)

The Journal noted that Facebook is working with big payment companies like Visa, indicating it wants to be useful for more than just as a delivery system for loyalty points. In addition, Ellis wrote, an open cryptocurrency system is more likely to encourage commerce over the Facebook system than a closed crypto system, because an open crypto is more liquid (easier to exchange to/from fiat currency, so more likely a consumer is willing to use it). She notes that Facebook already tried a closed payments system called Facebook Credits that failed to take off.

A public system like the one Ellis describes would be good news for payments companies like Visa and Mastercard, which have so far felt little disruption from cryptocurrencies, most of which are too slow to be useful as actual currencies, she argues.

If Facebook launches an open digital wallet and checkout button, the company will need to collaborate with Visa and Mastercard to enable a variety of card-based funding methods in its wallet (similar to Apple Pay, PayPal , or Google Pay), Ellis wrote.

It could also make Facebooks coin a useful asset for people who live in high-inflation countries where the local currency has been devalued, Ellis says. Essentially Facebook would be offering them a coin that is pegged to the value of a more stable currency so it cant be manipulated by the local government.

Thats the same argument people have given for years about Bitcoinwhich would mean Facebook would be a direct competitor to Bitcoin. (The irony of Bitcoin being replaced by a megacorporation is too rich to even address here.)

All this is highly speculative, of course. The idea that Facebook would hand control of its payments platform to an independent foundation seems unlikely at best. That said, its certainly possible that Facebook introduces a more publicly tradable cryptocurrency. The only question at that point is whether the logo would have Mark Zuckerbergs face on it.

Fighting over money is one thing; dealing with bitcoin and other types of cryptocurrency in a divorce is an entirely different story.

As cryptocurrency has surged in popularity, its become much more common for investors to carry shares in the largely unregulated market. For married couples looking to part ways, this means dealing with cryptocurrency as an asset could make for a difficult and lengthy divorce process.

Considering regulations and standards on digital currencies such as bitcoin are still being weighed by governments and financial regulators across the world, could the future of hiding assets during a nasty divorce be lying in its hands?

Cryptocurrency is virtual currency; it lives online and is traded on a blockchain, an encrypted ledger detailing transactions. Since each transaction is associated with a public and private key, its possible for each transaction to be traced back to a single individual.

Cryptocurrency has been around for about a decade, but it became more mainstream around 2017 when bitcoin skyrocketed to a price of $20,000 per coin and caught the public eye, before giving back much of its value in the time since.

In 2018, only 5 percent of the American population held cryptocurrency, according to a survey by the Global Blockchain Business Council. An additional 21 percent of respondents, however, said they were considering adding it to their portfolio.

As cryptocurrency grows in popularity, lawyers all over the world are beginning to face divorce cases with high-value disputes over these digital assets.

Jacqueline Newman, a New York-based matrimonial law attorney, represents all different types of clients, including those divorcing with cryptocurrency. She asks all of her clients to fill out a statement of net worth a comprehensive document detailing income, assets and debt of each party. She says her forms now ask parties to include cryptocurrency, too.

It hasnt gotten to the point where the court forms include it yet, but we have asked on ours and people list it under their general assets, Newman says.

Since bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies are largely unregulated and encrypted, some might think its a perfect place to anonymously stash away funds.

But thats not necessarily the case.

Mark DiMichael, CPA, certified Financial Forensics accountant and fraud examiner, specializes in cryptocurrency. In one recent case, a husband didnt report $100,000-plus in cryptocurrency assets on his statement of net worth. During the discovery process, DiMichael closely analyzed his bank statements and was able to trace the crypto transactions through a crypto-trading platform.

DiMichael warns, however, that cases can get more complicated. The more knowledgeable someone is in crypto, the bigger the threat they pose to successfully hiding the assets.

Although he hasnt worked on a large number of cases involving cryptocurrency so far, DiMichael gives the example of a cybersecurity expert exchanging cash for bitcoin as payment. By conducting the transaction in person, there would be no proof of the transaction occurring making the asset-hiding much more difficult to reveal to the court.

Its really hard to trace if the individual knows what theyre doing, DiMichael says. An expert is going to know not to leave any evidence on their computer, and it can be much more difficult to subpoena.

Edward Davis, a Miami-based asset-recovery attorney and founding shareholder of Sequor Law, says cases of financial infidelity involving crypto are only going to become more frequent in the coming years.

In 15 to 20 years, Davis expects people with large sums of money to turn toward cryptocurrency as a way to hide their assets.

Its a real threat, Davis says. Its not going to come up in the average divorce of Joe versus Mary where they both have regular jobs and are a middle class family. But the wealthy and uber-wealthy who have access to this are going to use it to hide their value.

Matrimonial attorneys interviewed for this story say there arent currently any specific laws regarding cryptocurrency protection during a divorce process. Davis says these laws to protect consumers from fraudulent crypto activity are likely coming, but they will be slow to implement.

The legal infrastructure and regulatory infrastructure for this stuff is way behind, Davis says. If you look at some of the people sitting in Congress some of them are in their 70s and 80s they have no idea what this is. They dont even know what Snapchat is. Youre talking about a generational change [that] is going to [have to] happen before people are confronting this kind of issue.

Another issue for getting a hand on regulating crypto, Davis says, is that theres a wide misunderstanding of how blockchain technology works.

Whenever something new comes along, everyone tends to minimize it, Davis says. Predicting technology is a very hard thing. People who are intimidated or scared or dont understand technology tend to minimize it.

As interest and commonality surrounding crypto continues to increase, experts in the legal field are having to quickly educate themselves on the asset to keep up. Some experts say there isnt enough being done to inform and train legal counsel on the inner workings of the asset.

Most of what DiMichael knows about crypto is self-taught. In 2018, DiMichael published A Forensic Guide to Finding Cryptocurrency in Divorce Litigation. He created the guide after his own research found there werent many resources available on the matter.

Ive seen some courses for it, but I think there should be more training, DiMichael says. Uncovering crypto is fairly complicated, and that can be even harder for someone not trained in crypto.

Most accountants dont understand cryptocurrency, DiMichael adds. More complicated divorce cases involving cryptocurrency can be a lengthy and complicated process and for an accountant learning everything on the fly, this can mean longer hours and a higher bill for the client. DiMichael says that he currently charges $435 per hour.

Davis hasnt worked directly on a case recovering cryptocurrency assets yet, but he has noticed an upswing in industry-related conversations in the past two years. Lawyers, who he says arent technology-savvy by nature, should pay close attention to cryptocurrency and educate themselves on how to manage it in court cases.

The main concern about crypto is how little we understand it and how dangerous it is because its an unregulated, untethered currency, Davis says. This is a real threat and one we have to think about.

The term cryptocurrency is a contraction of cryptographic currency. In March 2018, Merriam-Webster announced that they would include this term in their dictionary. Their definition is as follows:

cryptocurrency noun cryptocurrency krip-t-kr-n(t)-s , -k-rn(t)-s : any form of currency that only exists digitally, that usually has no central issuing or regulating authority but instead uses a decentralized system to record transactions and manage the issuance of new units, and that relies on cryptography to prevent counterfeiting and fraudulent transactions. To clarify, the stated decentralized system behind transaction-recording and issuance management is the blockchain.

As the name implies, cryptography is first and foremost in any cryptocurrency. Transactions are only recorded if they meet the network rules, which are defined in the code run by both relaying and mining nodes. Blocks are only included in the blockchain through some form of proof of work, which depends on a cryptographic process.

Similarly, new coins are only issued when miners or stakers(if using a proof-of-stake system) receive their block reward for generating a new, valid block. Therefore, the decentralized system is ultimately ruled by cryptography.

These objections may appear pedantic, but theyre important. As Merriam-Websters definition currently stands, mechanisms like SWIFT or PayPal might be considered cryptocurrencies. While unusually centralized and regulated, such payment mechanisms are also purely digital systems that depend on cryptography to prevent fraud and counterfeiting.

A more correct definition would read as follows:

The word usually has been shifted to account for the existence of items like physical cryptocoins and key backups.

More importantly, this definition makes it clear that the security of cryptocurrencies relies entirely on cryptography, but never on centralization or regulation. In other words, the issuance and transaction record of true cryptocurrencies are unaffected by human decision-making.

For convenience, this term is often shortened to crypto. An example is the cryptocurrency-only exchange, Cryptopia.

And cryptocoin has the same meaning as the well-known cryptocurrency news site, CryptoCoinsNews.com.

If its clear from the context that the intended meaning is cryptocurrency, the shortened term coin can be used. This term is derived from the numerous clones of Bitcoin, which often display a unique prefix (such as Litecoin or Dogecoin). But the best example of this usage is the well-known listing site for market capitalization: CoinMarketCap.com.

Cryptocurrencies use blockchains to order transactions. Blockchains are the best (and perhaps only) way to maintain a consensus about the state of a record among a decentralized, trustless network. If a currency relies on a trust in the form of a centrally maintained and managed record, its simply not a cryptocurrency (which is why PayPal and SWIFT arent cryptocurrencies.)

So far, this article has focused on the crypto part of cryptocurrency, but the currency part is equally important. While blockchains are a natural fit for monetary systems, efforts are being made to apply them to other functions (such as timestamping and record-keeping). While such systems can be useful, they cant be considered cryptocurrencies if they serve no monetary function.

In addition to cryptography, computing and networking are essential to the function of cryptocurrencies. These currencies are software, but theyre dependent on computing and networking hardware. Further physical aspects may be involved in certain cryptocurrencies (such as RFID tags or the backing of precious metals).

Under our improved definition, numerous electronic-payment systems in existence fail to qualify as cryptocurrencies. One major example is Ripple (XRP), which is issued by a company that controls all transactions. While Ripple contains cryptographic elements, credit cards do as well.

According to our definition, ICO tokens also arent cryptocurrencies. A single smart contract is responsible for the issuance of ICO tokens, so this system cant be considered to be decentralized, even if its cryptographically secured.

Lightning Networks arent cryptocurrencies either. They lack their own blockchain, and rely on the chain of an underlying coin for initiation and settlement. If Bitcoins Lightning Network succeeds, it will emphasize the critical properties of cryptocurrencies: security, decentralization, and immutability. And itll shift their secondary characteristics (such as speed and scalability) to Lightning Networks and other layered solutions.

Permissioned blockchains are often proposed by corporations or (central) banks, since access to reading and writing about them are restricted to approved parties. Due to the restricted nature of their blockchains, they cant be considered true cryptocurrencies.

The term cryptocurrency was coined (pun intended) to describe Bitcoin, so its best to only apply it to systems that are fundamentally similar to Bitcoin. By stretching the definition to fit every entry on CoinMarketCap (or even the forthcoming state-controlled or bank-controlled coins), the term becomes far too generalized to be meaningful.

Our suggested terms for these not-quite-cryptocurrencies are token or digital asset.

The irony is stunning: At a time when the President of the United States appears at campaign-style rallies ranting against immigrants, on Thursday the new $100 million Statue of Liberty Museum opens on Liberty Island in New York Harbor.

Its centerpiece: the original torch Lady Liberty carried, replaced in the 1980s because it leaked. If a visitor stands in the right spot, they can get a perfect view of the torch, and of the Statue of Liberty and American flag outside the window.

The dueling messages couldn't be more contradictory. "Immigration has been a controversial subject, not just now," said Stephen Briganti, president and CEO of the Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Foundation. "You go back through our history, it's been controversial. I think it's interesting how this country has remained a symbol of welcome at the same time that we didn't really always welcome people."

Briganti said the purpose of the new museum is to tell the story of the development of the statue back in the 1800s, as well as the story of how it came to be seen as the American symbol a symbol of good, of inclusion, of liberty.

Even when that story, to some, is myth.

"Liberty Enlightening the World" is the statue's official name. Designed by Frdric Auguste Bartholdi, she was a gift from the people of France to the United States. It was the Americans' responsibility to build the pedestal.

Unfortunately, fundraising fell $100,000 short, until Joseph Pulitzer, the owner of the New York World (and himself an immigrant from Hungary) stepped in with a bright idea: "If you gave any money, your name appeared in the newspaper," said Briganti. "I thought it was pretty brilliant, 'cause you bought the newspaper to see your name!"

It took just five months to raise the money. On the day the pedestal was completed, workmen sprinkled coins into the wet mortar to recognize the 120,000 gifts, most less than a dollar.

The museum contains a photo of Bartholdi's actual studio; in it, the statue as a collection of colossal body parts. Also featured: A full-sized replica, built in the 1980s, of a foot of the Statue of Liberty. The copper playing, like the original, is remarkably thin, not much thicker than a penny.

Under the statue's thin copper skin: an iron skeleton, designed by Gustave Eiffel, who later designed the Eiffel Tower.

On October 28, 1886, the day Lady Liberty was dedicated, a million people came out in the rain. New York held its first-ever ticker tape parade to celebrate her.

From foundation to flame, the whole monument is 305 feet high. The statue itself is about half that. She weighs 225 tons.

By the time the famous Emma Lazarus poem ("Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses") was inscribed on her base in 1903, the statue had already become a beacon for immigrants. Songwriter Irving Berlin, an immigrant from Russia, would put the words to music.

Briganti said, "It was the first big thing they saw as they arrived in New York Harbor. They would write home to people and say, 'When you see the Statue of Liberty, you're there. You're in America.'"

Dave Luchsinger was the last National Park Service superintendent to live on Liberty Island. His house was destroyed during Superstorm Sandy in 2012, making way for the new museum. He's retired now, but his reverence for the statue remains. Being superintendent there, he said, was "the honor of my life, the highlight of my career.

"I never cease to get more and more inspired by her, actually. Every time I see her, she turns different colors. There are times where she actually looks like she's gonna step right off the pedestal and say hello to you."

She cast her spell on the workers who built the museum, including their boss, Doug Phelps. "We're doing something for our country," Phelps said.

Correspondent Martha Teichner asked, "What does the statue mean to you?"

"It's liberty," he said. "It means freedom. It means our country."

More than four million people visit the Statue of Liberty every year, all coming to bask in her promise.

In the new museum like the statue itself, paid for entirely from private donations they are asked to consider what liberty is, and to be her promise.

A guide is a person who leads travelers, sportsmen, or tourists through unknown or unfamiliar locations. The term can also be applied to a person who leads others to more abstract goals such as knowledge or wisdom.

Explorers in the past venturing into territory unknown by their own people invariably hired guides. Military explorers Lewis and Clark were hired by the United States Congress to explore the Pacific Northwest. They in turn hired the better qualified Native American Sacagawea to help them. Wilfred Thesiger hired guides in the deserts that he ventured into, such as Kuri on his journey to the Tibesti Mountains in 1938.

Tour guides lead visitors through tourist attractions and give information about the attractions' natural and cultural significance. Often, they also act as interpreters for travelers who do not speak the local language. Automated systems like audio tours are sometimes substituted for human tour guides. Tour operators often hire guides to lead tourist groups.

Mountain guides are those employed in mountaineering; these are not merely to show the way but stand in the position of professional climbers with an expert knowledge of rock and snowcraft, which they impart to the amateur, at the same time assuring the safety of the climbing party. This professional class of guides arose in the middle of the 19th century when Alpine climbing became recognized as a sport.[1]

In Switzerland, the central committee of the Swiss Alpine Club issues a guides tariff which fixes the charges for guides and porters; there are three sections, for the Valais and Vaudois Alps, for the Bernese Oberland, and for central and eastern Switzerland.[1]

In Chamonix (France) a statue has been raised to Jacques Balmat, who was the first to climb Mont Blanc in 1786.[1] Other notable European guides are Christian Almer, Jakob and Melchior Anderegg, Klemens Bachleda, Auguste Balmat, Alexander Burgener, Armand Charlet, Michel Croz, Franois Devouassoud, Angelo Dibona, Andreas Heckmair, the Innerkofler family, Conrad Kain, Christian Klucker, and Matthias Zurbriggen.

A wilderness guide leads paid parties through back country areas that may variously include land, water bodies, and high country but not so high and technical as to require the skills of a mountain guide. Wilderness guides in the United States are historically and romantically particularly associated with the Adirondack Mountains of New York State, where they first established the application of their skills as a broadly accepted and financially compensated trade.

Wilderness guides are expected to have a command of survival skills (such as making shelters, fire-making, navigation, and first aid) and an understanding of the ecology and history of the location where they guide. Other common skills among guides include traditional handicrafts and cooking methods, fishing, hunting, bird watching, and nature conservation.

Wilderness tours usually take place on foot, though aids such as skis and snowshoes, and conveyances such as canoes, kayaks, sledges, pack animals, and snowmobiles are utilized as appropriate.[2]

Hunting guides are employed by those seeking to hunt wildlife, especially big game animals in the wild. European hunting guides working in Africa are sometimes called white hunters, although the term is most commonly used in the context of the early 20th century.

Guides are employed on safari, today usually just to observe and photograph wildlife, historically for big-game hunting. Safari guides are either self-employed or work for or through a guide service. There are no set qualifications or universal licensing procedures; customs and requirements vary by location. In lieu, many guides choose to belong to a professional association.[3] These are typically linked to specific countries and are governed by their laws and policies. Associations such as The Field Guides Association of Southern Africa (FGASA)[4] and Uganda Safari Guides Association (USAGA)[5] play an important role in training and educating safari guides to improve their knowledge and group safety. Many famed safari guides are found on the list of famous big-game hunters.

Fishing guides have a long history. Their work spans from aiding fly fishing in small brooks or lakes to deep saltwater big game fishing. Some areas where fishing guides are popular include the Norwegian coast, Swedish archipelago, the Florida coast, and various parts of Canada. The vernacular terms "fishing charter" or "charter boat" imply the services of a guide, whether the vessel's captain, a qualified hand, or experienced sportsman.

In areas where detailed maps were unavailable or remain lacking guides with local knowledge, and scouts with the necessary skills to probe the unknown, prove invaluable in the direction of military operations. In 18th century Europe, the stricter organization of military resources led in various countries to the special training of guide officers who had the primary duty of finding, and if necessary establishing, routes for other military units.[1]

The genesis of the "Guides" regiments may be found in a short-lived Corps of Guides formed by Napoleon in Italy in 1796, which appears to have been a personal escort or bodyguard composed of men who knew the country.[1] Following the unification of Italy in 1870-71, the new national army included a regiment designated as Guides - the 19th Cavalleggieri (Light Horse).

In the Belgian Army the two Guides regiments, created respectively in 1833 and 1874, constituted part of the light cavalry and came to correspond to the Guard cavalry of other nations.[1] Until the outbreak of World War I, they wore a distinctive uniform comprising a plumed busby, green dolman braided in yellow, and crimson breeches. Mechanised in October 1937, both regiments formed armored battalions in the post World War II Belgian Army. Following a series of amalgamations the Belgian Guides ceased to exist in 2011.

In the Swiss army prior to 1914, the squadrons of Guides acted as divisional cavalry. In this role these light cavalry units were called upon, on occasion, to lead columns and provide scouts.[1]

The Corps of Guides of the British Indian Army consisted of a unique combination of infantry companies and cavalry squadrons.[1] After World War I the infantry element was incorporated in the 12th Frontier Force Regiment and the Guides Cavalry formed a separate regiment - the 10th Queen Victoria's Own Corps of Guides Cavalry (Frontier Force). This unit still exists as the 2nd (Guides) Battalion of the Frontier Force Regiment of the modern Army of Pakistan.

In drill, a "guide" is an officer or non-commissioned officer who regulates the direction and pace of movements.[1]

A psychedelic guide is someone who guides a drug user's experiences as opposed to a sitter who merely remains present, ready to discourage bad trips and handle emergencies but not otherwise getting involved. Guides are more common amongst spiritual users of entheogens. Psychedelic guides were strongly encouraged by Timothy Leary and the other authors of The Psychedelic Experience: A Guide Based on the Tibetan Book of the Dead. Trip sitters are also mentioned in the Responsible Drug User's Oath.

In Islam ar-Rashid, one of the 99 Names of God, means the Guide. From this is derived the common Arabic name Rashid.

Cryonics is an effort to save lives by using temperatures so cold that a person beyond help by today's medicine might be preserved for decades or centuries until a future medical technology can restore that person to full health. Cryonics is a second chance at life. It is the reasoned belief in the advancement of future medicinal technologies being able to cure things we cant today.

Many biological specimens, including whole insects, many types of human tissue including brain tissue, and human embryos have been cryogenically preserved, stored at liquid nitrogen temperature where all decay ceases, and revived. This leads scientists to believe that the same can be done with whole human bodies, and that any minimal harm can be reversed with future advancements in medicine.

Neurosurgeons often cool patients bodies so they can operate on aneurysms without damaging or rupturing the nearby blood vessels. Human embryos that are frozen in fertility clinics, defrosted, and implanted in a mothers uterus grow into perfectly normal human beings. This method isnt new or groundbreaking- successful cryopreservation of human embryos was first reported in 1983 by Trounson and Mohr with multicellular embryos that had been slow-cooled using dimethyl sulphoxide (DMSO).

And just in Feb. of 2016, there was a cryonics breakthrough when for the first time, scientists vitrified a rabbits brain and, after warming it back up, showed that it was in near perfect condition. This was the first time a cryopreservation was provably able to protect everything associated with learning and memory.

For a special issue of the journal Electronics, Moore was asked to predict developments over the next decade. Observing that the total number of components in these circuits had roughly doubled each year, he blithely extrapolated this annual doubling to the next decade, estimating that microcircuits of 1975 would contain an astounding 65,000 components per chip. In 1975, as the rate of growth began to slow, Moore revised his time frame to two years. His revised law was a bit pessimistic; over roughly 50 years from 1961, the number of transistors doubled approximately every 18 months. Subsequently, magazines regularly referred to Moores law as though it were inexorablea technological law with the assurance of Newtons laws of motion.

What made this dramatic explosion in circuit complexity possible was the steadily shrinking size of transistors over the decades. Measured in millimetres in the late 1940s, the dimensions of a typical transistor in the early 2010s were more commonly expressed in tens of nanometres (a nanometre being one-billionth of a metre)a reduction factor of over 100,000. Transistor features measuring less than a micron (a micrometre, or one-millionth of a metre) were attained during the 1980s, when dynamic random-access memory (DRAM) chips began offering megabyte storage capacities. At the dawn of the 21st century, these features approached 0.1 micron across, which allowed the manufacture of gigabyte memory chips and microprocessors that operate at gigahertz frequencies. Moores law continued into the second decade of the 21st century with the introduction of three-dimensional transistors that were tens of nanometres in size.

Eight Private Islands for Sale Perfect for Long-Term Getaways

No one buys a private island looking for a faster pace. The key is creating a place that functions as an actual refugeone where you can live for weeks, if not months, without interruption.

But when Eric Blochs grandfather bought a 32-acre island off the coast of Roatan, one of the bay islands of Honduras, it was only equipped to be a weekend getaway. He bought it in 1962, and I think it cost about $2,000, says Bloch, an architect in Zurich. At the time, his grandfather lived on the mainland, where he owned fruit plantations. The island was completely uninhabited, Bloch says. He put in a runway and dug a canal where you could dock boats.

After his grandfathers death, Blochs mother inherited the island. In the mid-1990s, she decided to develop it into a permanent compound where the family could spend weeks at a time. She built it out of what Bloch calls simple tropical-wood structures. The exception, he says, is a reinforced-concrete hurricane shelter.

The main house has eight bedrooms, each of which has an en suite bathroom. There are also facilities where a staff of up to 12 can stay. The island, Bloch says, is designed to sustain a comparatively large group. Its solar panels work about 85 percent of the timeit depends on how many people are on the island, he says. If you have 16 friends and theyre all city people who want to blow-dry their hair, its going to drain the batteries pretty quickly. (Should the system fail, there are generators.) Together, two massive cisterns can store 40,000 gallons of water, enough to get through six months of dry season. The only thing the location lacks, he says, is food, which has to be brought in.

When Napoleon occupied Venice, ending the citys thousand-year run as a republic, he made few changes to the citys infrastructure. But one addition was a small fortridottoon one of the lagoons 118 islands. After his fall, the city passed into Austrian hands, and in 1866 it was annexed by Italy. The fort was eventually sold into private hands. (Even so, because its in the Venetian lagoon, its island is considered part of a Unesco World Heritage Site.)

Today, the fort has been converted into a villa, and the grounds, which feature mature fruit trees, are secluded from the rest of the city. Hedonism, in ethics, a general term for all theories of conduct in which the criterion is pleasure of one kind or another. The word is derived from the Greek hedone (pleasure), from hedys (sweet or pleasant).

Hedonistic theories of conduct have been held from the earliest times. They have been regularly misrepresented by their critics because of a simple misconception, namely, the assumption that the pleasure upheld by the hedonist is necessarily purely physical in its origins. This assumption is in most cases a complete perversion of the truth. Practically all hedonists recognize the existence of pleasures derived from fame and reputation, from friendship and sympathy, from knowledge and art. Most have urged that physical pleasures are not only ephemeral in themselves but also involve, either as prior conditions or as consequences, such pains as to discount any greater intensity that they may have while they last.

The earliest and most extreme form of hedonism is that of the Cyrenaics as stated by Aristippus, who argued that the goal of a good life should be the sentient pleasure of the moment. Since, as Protagoras maintained, knowledge is solely of momentary sensations, it is useless to try to calculate future pleasures and to balance pains against them. The true art of life is to crowd as much enjoyment as possible into each moment.

No school has been more subject to the misconception noted above than the Epicurean. Epicureanism is completely different from Cyrenaicism. For Epicurus pleasure was indeed the supreme good, but his interpretation of this maxim was profoundly influenced by the Socratic doctrine of prudence and Aristotles conception of the best life. The true hedonist would aim at a life of enduring pleasure, but this would be obtainable only under the guidance of reason. Self-control in the choice and limitation of pleasures with a view to reducing pain to a minimum was indispensable. This view informed the Epicurean maxim Of all this, the beginning, and the greatest good, is prudence. This negative side of Epicureanism developed to such an extent that some members of the school found the ideal life rather in indifference to pain than in positive enjoyment.

In the late 18th century Jeremy Bentham revived hedonism both as a psychological and as a moral theory under the umbrella of utilitarianism. Individuals have no goal other than the greatest pleasure, thus each person ought to pursue the greatest pleasure. It would seem to follow that each person inevitably always does what he or she ought. Bentham sought the solution to this paradox on different occasions in two incompatible directions. Sometimes he says that the act which one does is the act which one thinks will give the most pleasure, whereas the act which one ought to do is the act which really will provide the most pleasure. In short, calculation is salvation, while sin is shortsightedness. Alternatively he suggests that the act which one does is that which will give one the most pleasure, whereas the act one ought to do is that which will give all those affected by it the most pleasure.

The psychological doctrine that a humans only aim is pleasure was effectively attacked by Joseph Butler. He pointed out that each desire has its own specific object and that pleasure comes as a welcome addition or bonus when the desire achieves its object. Hence the paradox that the best way to get pleasure is to forget it and to pursue wholeheartedly other objects. Butler, however, went too far in maintaining that pleasure cannot be pursued as an end. Normally, indeed, when one is hungry or curious or lonely, there is desire to eat, to know, or to have company. These are not desires for pleasure. One can also eat sweets when one is not hungry, for the sake of the pleasure that they give.

Moral hedonism has been attacked since Socrates, though moralists sometimes have gone to the extreme of holding that humans never have a duty to bring about pleasure. It may seem odd to say that a human has a duty to pursue pleasure, but the pleasures of others certainly seem to count among the factors relevant in making a moral decision. One particular criticism which may be added to those usually urged against hedonists is that whereas they claim to simplify ethical problems by introducing a single standard, namely pleasure, in fact they have a double standard. As Bentham said, Nature has placed mankind under the governance of two sovereign masters, pain and pleasure. Hedonists tend to treat pleasure and pain as if they were, like heat and cold, degrees on a single scale, when they are really different in kind.
