Area 51 Raid: Everything Thats Happening in the Desert Today – Popular Mechanics

Todays the day that has long been promised, when a bunch of people are heading to the Nevada desert to see them aliens and possibly get arrested in pursuit of meme immortality. Its Area 51 Day, baby, and were celebrating accordingly.

When we last checked in on Storm Area 51, a.k.a. Alienstock, which started as a Facebook joke to send hundreds of thousands of people to the military testing site and quickly spiraled out of control, its organizer pulled the plug on the ill-advised raid in favor of a less-logistically-nightmarish music festival in Las Vegas, which went down last night.

Ethan MillerGetty Images

But that hasnt stopped UFO enthusiasts and trolls from invading rural Nevada today to take part in unsanctioned alien festivities, and the government has all its ducks in a row: Earlier this week, the Federal Aviation Administration announced it would be shutting down airspace above Area 51 through the weekend for special security reasons.

Area 51, of course, is a genuine classified defense site and is protected as such, with a sign that reads, Restricted Area: It is unlawful to enter this area without permission of the Installation Commander. Cross that line and youre committing an offense against Section 1382 of Title 18: entering a military installation without permission, which makes you liable to a $5,000 fine.

Thats just one reason, among many others, why storming Area 51 is a pretty terrible idea.

Like clockwork, the arrests have already started. On September 10, a Dutch YouTuber and his friend were arrested three miles deep into the Nevada National Security Site and jailedand that was several days before todays proceedings. We can only imagine the kind of trouble still to come.

So thats why well be updating this page throughout the day, as official reports, tweets, photos, and videos trickle in from the Area 51 raid. Keep checking back here to see whats happening out in the desert, from arrests to rallies to, Lord willing, the intrepid trespassers actually uncovering UFOs and ETs. Heres hoping.

This thing looks like a blast.

There are actually two competing Storm Area 51 events taking place this weekend. The first is Alienstock, which original Facebook ringleader Matty Roberts pulled out of in favor of last night's Bud Light-sponsored event in Vegas, leaving many rural Nevada residents, who had already sunk resources into the festival, in the lurch. Among the jilted was Connie West, owner of the Little ALeInn in tiny Rachel, Nevada, who plunked down a $17,500 down payment for security to host Alienstock and was considering threatening legal action against Roberts.

But West soldiered onshe called the Thursday night kickoff concert "fabulous," per the Review-Journaland most of the images and videos you're seeing today come from Alienstock.

So far, so good. Reporter Mick Akers of the R-J is on the scene at Alienstock today, snapping photos of the alien enthusiasts. The crowd at Alienstock, Akers says, has grown considerably in size since this morning's first dispatch.

The Coneheads showed up:

Later tonight, another alien-themed festival, Area 51 Basecamp, will set up shop in Hiko, around 30 miles from Rachel. The fest, held at the Alien Research Center on the Extraterrestrial Highway, promises food trucks, art installations, ufologists, and performances from DJs like Paul Oakenfold, who will hit the stage tonight.

The event's tagline? "Get abducted at your own risk."

And it's not even for a cool reason. Did the guy who was arrested this morning try to uncover the classified wreckage of flying saucers? No. No he did not. Instead, cops busted him for urinating near Area 51's gate, per the AP. Meanwhile, another woman was detained for an undisclosed reason, though we hope it was something more badass.

Step up your game, guys.

Elsewhere at the raid, this is happening:

As you'd expect, probing jokes abound.

The Associated Press reports that about 75 people showed up at the Area 51 gate Friday morning, and at least two were detained by local police.

And while the numbers arent anywhere near the more than 2 million people who jokingly RSVPd to the original Facebook event, Lincoln County Sheriff Kerry Lee estimated on Thursday that around 1,500 people hit the various festival sites, with 150 traveling deeper into the area to get within selfie distance of the gates.

Meanwhile, we have our first Naruto run!

If we Naruto run, we can move faster than their bullets, the Storm Area 51 Facebook event promised. The Naruto Run is named after a manga character who runs at superhuman speed with his arms stretched out behind him. This has spawned a host of internet memes with people imitating Narutos running style in unlikely situations.

Marvel Studios X-Men delivers a true shock to its fan-base as they reveal the primary function of Cerebro!! – Morning Picker

Fans of Marvel Cinematic Universe definitely knew how powerful the celebrated Cerebro is. But as Marvels X-Men Universe re-launch is continuing in production, writer of the series, Jonathan Hickman, has made a bold move in this weeks chapter. Jonathan Hickman has completely redefined one of the true elements and one of the oldest concepts in X-Men: the Cerebro. Though Marvel fans know what the Cerebro is capable of and how it amplifies Charles Xaviers telepathy through a supercomputer, Jonathan Hickman has revealed the true function of X-Mens Cerebro and no fan theory has ever predicted such a twist and story.

Image: Marvel

In this weeks chapter of X-Men which was released just a few hours before, some shocking facts have been revealed and these facts deal with the key to immortality. The process to reach immortality consists of five randomly chosen X-Men who are re-purposed as a resurrection squad. These five X-Men characters can fully resurrect and grow clones of their dead comrades. However, though everything is perfect and the clones are fully powered, these clones do not have souls and the selected five cannot recreate the souls of their comrades.

And this is where the Cerebro comes into the picture. The 5th chapter of the X-Men re-launch explains that locating a mutant was not the primary function of the Cerebro, but instead, it is the secondary function. Jonathan Hickman explains that the primary function of the Cerebro was always to serve as a database, where the imprints of every single mutant sensed by the Cerebro through Charles Xaviers mutation power were saved.

To put in a simple sentence, Charles Xaviers Cerebro is a soul collector of mutants. And the Cerebro allows Prof. Charles Xavier to put on the role of a God, who can restore soul and life to the dead.

The rest is here:

Ancient Turkey in the Midwest University of Chicago’s Syro-Anatolian Gallery – Daily Sabah

It is 1919, and James Henry Breasted sits upright at his desk, penning tight-lipped, and with a furrowed brow into a broad, gilded notebook. His hair is as white as his starched collar. His bifocals pressed downward, surrounded by leaves of copied manuscripts in the extinct languages of his expertise, from a region he perspicuously named the "Fertile Crescent," encompassing the Near Eastern lands that birthed civilization before Greece knew literacy.

Staring above his trained mien is a Pharaonic profile in the likeness of Nefertiti, that beauty of immortality which the pyramid-builders perfected with sculptural prolificacies unsurpassed. She rests atop a fragment of classical Greek inscriptions, beside an engraved stone pillar and parchments of Egyptian hieroglyphics. At the time, he had been on the University of Chicago faculty for a quarter century, since 1894.

His research effectively recalled mythical Greco-Roman origin stories from the tables of scientists around the world. The dawn of history, he proved, was founded much earlier, where, at the time, the East and West were drawing lines in the sand over territorial disputes that continue to rage today in such places as modern-day Iraq. In conflict zones, the oldest remains of art and technology are increasingly uncovered, and precariously preserved.

Fragment of Hittite tablet, "Song of Silver," baked clay, Hattusha, Late Bronze Age, courtesy of the Oriental Institute at the University of Chicago.

Breasted, in his wisdom, founded the Oriental Institute, with considerable financial support, to mine the reaches of Middle Eastern archaeology. He did so in the interest of respecting universal, human heritage. As is written on interpretive placards before the Institute's galleries, "At the time, it was legal practice for the host country to give a portion of the excavated finds to the institution(s) leading or funding the archaeological fieldwork".

Since the turn of the 20th century, Turkish and Western archaeologists have navigated often dangerous political boundaries in the Near East in a mutual attempt to contextualize findings according to national interest, while spreading the appreciation of humankind's one shared narrative of intellectual and social evolution. By the 19th century's end, the initial archaeological free-for-all leapt into repatriation rhetoric between sovereign nations.

Finding Anatolia in America

Inside the Oriental Institute, before the beginning of recorded time begins with collections from Mesopotamia, there is a special selection of eight artifacts behind a polished glass case, each representing one of the main exhibitions curated free to the public. One is a fragment of baked clay from the Middle Bronze Age, excavated into the light of day after 3,700 years underground in 1929 in Turkey's village of Aliar Hyk, east of Ankara, and north of Kayseri province.

Only the snub-nosed beak of the ceramicist's bird of prey is left, with its fat gullet beneath a single, round eye. It is said that eagles, hawks and falcons were commonly depicted in ancient Anatolia, as they spied for the gods, and symbolized the royal power that came to emblazon Rome's double-eagled glory. Hunters thought they were clairvoyant. And when moderns say, ornithologist, they speak Hittite. Its root word comes from "haran" for eagle.

At its Syro-Anatolian Gallery, named after the pioneering, early 20th century female physician Henrietta Herbolsheimer, M.D., the Oriental Institute pays homage to the bounty of civilizational progress that swept across the lands currently defined by Turkey and Syria. It is filled with artifacts mostly gleaned from the Institute's ventures into the young Turkish Republic during the Anatolian Expedition (1927-1932), and the Syrian-Hittite Expedition (1931-1938).

The Amuq Valley, close to Antakya, and Central Anatolia are the most important regions where American-led archaeologists charted vast, prehistoric networks to trade stone, timber and metals from the Neolithic age, extending back to 9,000 B.C. all the way up to the Ottoman era. For 500 years, in the 2nd millennium B.C., Hittites were a great power in the Near East. A prelude to the diverse store of Hittite relics is an ivory plaque from the Late Bronze Age (1200-1150 B.C.).

The plaque is matchless in its elaboration of Hittite motifs. Excavated in 1936-1937 it displays the wealth of artistic learning that went into the construction of outdoor sanctuaries, many of which can be found dotting the rural landscapes of Anatolia, such as at Eflatun Pnar, about 215 miles south of Ankara. The ivory piece is carved with sun deities, winged disks and all varieties of horned, bearded, dancing creatures from a lost world of the archaic imagination. Interestingly, excavators found the plaque in the palace annex of Megiddo, Israel along with a cache of prized objects that scholars presume were tribute, or booty, between the neighboring civilizations. Hittite city-states were first consolidated around 1750 B.C. into one kingdom in a place called Kanesh, or Nesa, which to contemporaries is known as the site of Kltepe in Kayseri. Within a century, the imperial capital moved to Hattusha, where it built an administrative center with some thirty temples near the town of Boazky in the bucolic province of orum by the Black Sea. Through treaties and marriages, the Hittite empire possessed lands from Cyprus and Troy to the west, and the Upper Euphrates and Hatay to the east. Their palaces were graced with beautiful Syrian and Egyptian princesses, whose jewelry now hangs in Chicago.

Exquisite antiquities of the Near East

Hittite culture revealed fine talent for beautifying the mundane. Daily life was punctuated with ritual and festival. Handmade ceramics spun on the potter's wheel attested to a pervasive aesthetic infusion throughout society, from the lowest rungs of its industries in storage wares to pieces like the "Grape-bunch vessel," a curious Middle Bronze Age fabrication of baked clay from Aliar Hyk shaped with a whimsical touch given to its inebriating purposes.

Even activities as seemingly humdrum as economic trade were imbued with visionary, creative dimensions. Hittites were literary. They etched clay tablets with adaptations of everyday life into sagas of mythical proportions. One such fragment, listed as possibly from "Hattusha," modernly Boazky is from the Late Bronze Age. It preserves a Hittite legend, "Song of Silver," about a fatherless boy named Silver who becomes the king of heaven. The "Song of Silver" was essentially liturgy for the Hurrian ethnic group within Hittite lands. Their polytheistic theology followed much of the Mesopotamian belief systems. The 8th century Greek poet Hesiod found his muse in the "Song of Silver" for his classic work, "Theogony." It is no wonder, as the language, translated by Oriental Institute curators, is enchanting, even in bits: "I sing of Silver, the illust[rious]... Wise men [told] me of the orphan's... It was not to be."

Eagles Notebook: Sproles’ shot at playing hero was a push – The Delaware County Daily Times

PHILADELPHIA It could have been a storybook ending scripted around Darren Sproles, the quiet veteran who with the fourth quarter winding down, was a couple of plays away from football immortality.

The Eagles trailed by a field goal when Sproles hauled in a 25-yard pass from Carson Wentz on fourth-and-five, the gain putting the ball at the 20-yard of the Lions with 49 ticks left. Unfortunately, the 36-year-old veteran was flagged for pushing off Tavon Wilson, 14 years younger, a half-foot taller and some 30 pounds heavier than Sproles.

Both of us were going for the ball, Sproles said. Its tough, but the thing is weve got another one on Thursday that weve got to get ready for. Weve got to put this in the past.

At the opening kickoff, Sproles needed just 41 yards to pass Hall of Fame receiver Tim Brown for fifth on the NFLs all-time list for all-purpose yardage. He collected six yards in the game. The reception that was nullified would have drawn him within a first down of moving up on a list of elite players topped by Jerry Rice. That quest will have to wait for Sproles, who has 19,648 all-purpose yards and counting.

The Eagles lost rookie offensive tackle Andre Dillard to a knee injury in the first half. He was filling in for Jason Peters, who was ill at the time. When Dillard went down the Eagles turned to Halapoulivaati Vaitai, although Peters returned in the second half.

Defensive end Derek Barnett (foot-ankle) exited in the first half but played a limited role in the second half. Cornerback Ronald Darby didnt play in the second half due to a hamstring issue.

Eagles tight end Dallas Goedert (calf) was active but played sparingly. He was targeted once but dropped a Wentz bomb in the end zone. The Eagles scored on the drive anyway, Nelson Agholor hauling in the first of two Wentz TD passes.

The Eagles also had dropped passes from Agholor, Jordan Howard, Mack Hollins and J.J. Arcega-Whiteside, who was at the end zone. Wentz also was sacked three times and hit five times on a tough day.

The Eagles pass rush went without a sack. Last season they had eight straight games with multiple sacks. This year they have two sacks in three games.

Were not getting to the quarterback, especially me, Fletcher Cox said. Im getting there but Im not getting there quick enough. Ive got to do a better job but us also as a group, as a D-line, weve got to be better and I know we will.

Pederson was disappointed enough to say the Eagles would have to re-evaluate.

That is something we have to look at, generating a pass rush, whether with four, five, six, whatever it is, Pederson said.

NOTES >> With rookie Miles Sanders putting the ball on the ground twice, Eagles running backs have 11 fumbles since the start of 2018, most in the league. I thought he sort of rebounded from those in the second half with a couple of nice runs and his kickoff returns were good, Pederson said of Sanders. It was just a learning moment for a young running back in games like this." ... Wide receivers Alshon Jeffery (calf) and DeSean Jackson (abdominal strain) were scratched. The Birds also scratched running back Corey Clement (shoulder), linebacker Kamu Grugier-Hill (knee), center Nate Herbig and defensive tackle Tim Jernigan (back). ... Zach Ertz caught four passes for 64 yards to move into second on the Eagles all-time receptions list ahead of Pete Retzlaff (452). Harold Carmichael is the Eagles all-time leader with 589 receptions.

Goleen win Carbery junior B football title – Southern Star Newspaper

Dan OCallaghan captain of the Goleen team raises the Liam Nolan Cup after his teams victory over Newcestown in the Rowa/Rowex Pharma JBFC final at Castlehaven.

Goleen 1-8

Newcestown 0-9

TOM LYONS REPORTS

THEY were lighting the bonfires and celebrating on the Mizen Peninsula when Goleen captured the Bandon Co-op Carbery junior B football title for only the third time in their chequered history.

Sixty years ago, 1959, the title was won for the very first time and they had to wait until 2011 to capture the second. Now the men of 2019 have earned immortality in the GAA history of the peninsula and little wonder they celebrated in style when the Bill Nolan Cup was handed to captain Dan OCallaghan, who dedicated the victory to the men of 1959.

Goleen had double cause to celebrate this great win because they entered this game as rank outsiders against a Newcestown side that had won the title two years ago. Although Goleen had beaten Newcestown in Round 3 of the round-robin championship, that was against a vastly depleted Newcestown side and few rated the chances of the Mizen men against a full eastern outfit.

However, from the word go, Goleen turned all predictions on their head. Playing superb combination football in the first half, they dominated proceedings, while in the second half they defended heroically as Newcetown swept forward in waves.

We were given no chance to win this this one but that really drove us on, said manager Gene ODonovan.

The lads were really up for this final and beating Newcestown two weeks ago showed we could win it. We did miss a lot of scores in the first half and we made it tough for ourselves but the lads really worked for this one.

They are a phenomenal bunch of lads and if I asked them to stay training to 12 oclock, they would. Its the real genuine village spirit.

On a perfect night for football, on a superb sod under lights, Newcestown had the opening score from Cian Healy but it was Goleen who thundered into the game. With Paudie Scully and David OLeary dominating play, Goleen were playing most of the good football as the ageless warrior John Cullinane, the general of the forward division, kicked an equalising point and hard-working full forward Tadhg Cullinane put them in front.

With ace forward Darren ODonovan having a rare off-day from play and frees, Goleen missed chances before Newcestowns best forward, Kieran Kelly, levelled the scores for the second, and last, time.

Outstanding wing back Padraig Reidy surged forward to split the posts, a lead Goleen were not to lose again, and Michael OReilly doubled the advantage. Although Cian Healys free narrowed the gap to one, a Tadhg Cullinane point made it 0-5 to 0-3 at the end of a Goleen-dominated first quarter.

Goleen continued their form into the second quarter. The scoring slowed after Michael OReilly shoved Goleen three in front but the vital score of the game arrived in the 20th minute when a mix-up in the Newcestown goalmouth saw John Cullinane usher the ball to the net. But it was Newcestown who closed the first-half scoring with a point from impressive centre back James Kelleher, as Goleen led 1-6 to 0-4 at half time.

The second half produced a different story as Newcestown emerged a much more determined side, with veteran John Crowley, Mark Courtney and James Kelleher marshalling a much-tighter defence, Rick Bradfield taking control at midfield against a tiring Goleen side, and Kieran Kelly, Gerard ODriscoll and Cian Healy trying hard up front.

Points from Kelly and Bradfield closed the gap, and there were further scores from Cian Healy (two frees) and Kieran Kelly to close the lead to two points twice in the closing 20 minutes, but that was as close as they got against tenacious Goleen tackling.

The closing minutes were played out in a welter of excitement with some strong runs by a rejuvenated Darren ODonovan, great leadership by John Cullinane and courageous defending by Daniel ODriscoll being vital for Goleen.

During the second half, Goleen managed only two points from man-of-the-match Daniel ODriscoll, and Tadhg Cullinane (free), but they were vital scores as they provided the winning margin at the end.

Scorers

Goleen: John Cullinane 1-1; Tadhg Cullinane 0-3 (2f); Michael OReilly 0-2; Padraig Reidy, Daniel ODriscoll 0-1 each.

Newcestown: Cian Healy 0-4 (3f); Kieran Kelly 0-3; Rick Bradfield, James Kelleher 0-1 each.

Goleen: Ronan Kennedy; Jack ODriscoll, Dan OCallaghan, James Scully; Padraig Reidy, Daniel ODriscoll, Michael Sheehan; Paudie Scully, David OLeary; John Cullinane, Darren ODonovan, Shane OLeary; Patrick Scully, Tadhg Cullinane, Michael OReily.

Subs: Sam Coughlan for S OLeary (40), Sean Sheehan for M OReilly (47), Isaac Solomen for P Reidy (50), Danny Cullinane for M Sheehan (59).

Newcestown: Cathal Clarke; Mark Courtney, John Crowley, Mark Shorten; Gerard Murphy, James Kelleher, Evan Shorten; Bryan OConnor, Rick Bradfield; Kieran Kelly, Padraig Collins, James Curran; Patrick Kenneally, Cian Healy, Cathal Cadogan.

Subs: Gerard ODriscoll for G Murphy (28), Denis Fahey for P Kenneally (40).

Former student teacher arrested on sexual assault charges reaches plea agreement – PenBayPilot.com

ROCKLAND The state and the attorney for a former student teacher at Camden Hills Regional High School who was arrested May 31 for allegedly having a sexual relationship with an 18-year-old student, reached a plea agreement that reduces the charge to a misdemeanor.

Eben Wight, 21, pleaded guilty to gross sexual assault at a hearing Sept. 19. The plea agreement is part of a deferred disposition that stipulates the felony charge will be dismissed and Wight will be charged with misdemeanor sexual touching if he follows the terms of the agreement for the next 12 months.

If Wight meets the terms, he will be sentenced to 364 days in jail with all but 90 days suspended, the maximum sentence. Wights attorney will be able to argue for less or no jail time at his sentencing hearing in September 2020.

Terms of the agreement include that Wight is ordered to undergo a mental health evaluation and a report must be received in the district attorneys office within 60 days from the date of the hearing.

He must also perform 100 hours of community service, cannot be on any school property, including CHRS, except to attend events for his family as long as he is accompanied by a parent or grandparent, and have no contact with children under 19, except his own family members, and while in class with students at college.

Additionally, Wight is not to have any contact with the victim or her family and must comply with sex offender counseling.

If he doesnt follow the terms of the agreement, then will face an open plea to a felony.

Wight was arrested May 31 by Camden Police Detective Curt Andrick and charged with gross sexual assault, as violating state statute governing Title 17-A, which states:A person is guilty of gross sexual assault if that person engages in a sexual act with another person and.... [Section F]The other person, not the actor's spouse, is a student enrolled in a private or public elementary, secondary or special education school, facility or institution and the actor is a teacher, employee or other official having instructional, supervisory or disciplinary authority over the student. Violation of this paragraph is a Class C crime.

Wight appeared in Knox County Unified Court in Rockland on June 3. Judge Susan Sparaco set his bail at $250 cash. He later posted bail and was released from jail.

According to the affidavit filed in Knox County Unified Court by Andrick, Five Town Community School District Superintendent Maria Libby contacted Camden police after she received an anonymous letter, dated May 10, 2019, from an outraged citizen accusing Wight of being in a sexual relationship with a senior female student in one of his classes.

While I do not want the female student to be further victimized by an investigation, I am writing because of the gross immortality that Mr. Wight has shown as a student teacher in the hopes that this man will not be able to abuse his authority and power as a teacher in the future, the letter said. I am writing to stop further female students from being trapped by his neediness and moral turpitude.

Theoutraged citizen did not provide his or her name. The letter was typed.

Libby said then: Eben was technically not an employee. He was in our district as a student teacher as part of his undergraduate degree program. He finished on May 10.

She said, responding to a question about how apprentice teachers are instructed in their legal responsibilities before taking the job and if they were instructed in employment guidelines, although they are technically not employees.

It is my understanding that the sending college takes responsibility for making sure student teachers are aware of their responsibilities and boundaries, she said. We dont have any formal induction or training for student teachers who do their practicum in our schools.

Wight was a student teacher as part of his undergraduate degree program. He taught the chamber singers, band/chorus and about the history of rock and roll, since early January 2019. He was not paid by the district except for one occasion when he served as a substitute teacher in March, according to the affidavit.

Andrick interviewed both the student teacher and the 18-year-old student at the Camden Police Station.

Wight admitted that he had a sexual relationship with the student and after they first met, they eventually exchanged cell phone numbers and started sending text messages, according to the report. He said the sex was consensual and did not occur on school grounds, according to the affidavit.

The student also confirmed that she had a sexual relationship with Wight, police documented in the court report.

First Look At Angelina Jolie In Eternals Teases Death Scene – Cosmic Book News

Marvel's filming onEternalscontinues as afirst look at Angelina Jolie as Thena has hit the net from the UK.

The Daily Mail has posted images showing off the new blond look of Angelina Jolie where Thena can be seen wading into a lake and appearing to spread some sort of ashes.

Just whose ashes those belong to remains to be seen as the Eternals are immortal (hence the name).

In the comics, Thena was created by the legendary Jack Kirby back in 1976. The character is a scholar and a warrior whose powers include superhuman strength, speed, stamina, durability, agility, and reflexes, and she also possesses the ability to manipulate cosmic energy to augment her life force, granting her virtual invulnerability and immortality, the ability to project cosmic energy from her eyes or hands in the form of heat, light, or concussive force and possibly other powers.

Shes a warrior, said Jolie back in August. Im going to have to work very hard to give the Marvel Cinematic Universe the Thena they deserve.

This past San Diego Comic-Con saw Angelina Jolie appear on stage with concept art released (above).

The cast also said they could take destroy both The Avengers and Guardians of the Galaxy.

Angelina also stars inMaleficent: Mistress of Evil for Disney and gets released October 18, 2019.

Eternals gets released Nov. 6, 2020 directed by Chloe Zhao also starring Richard Madden (Icarus), Kumail Nanjiani (Kingo), Lauren Ridloff (Makkari), Bryan Tyree Henry (Phastos), Salma Hayek (Ajak), Lia McHugh (Sprite), Don Lee (Gilgamesh), Barry Keoghan (Druig), Gemma Chan (Sersi), and with Kit Harrington playing Black Knight.

Chinese Culture class celebrate Mid-Autumn Moon Festival – The Doane Line

Students in the Chinese Culture course put on the event to raise cultural awareness and education at Doane.

The Chinese Cultures class, taught by Courtney Bruntz, the Asian Studies professor on campus, held an event to celebrate the Mid-Autumn Moon Festival.

The Mid-Autumn Moon Festival took place this past Friday, allowing students the chance to try a piece of mooncake, take a piece of rabbit candy, and make a wish for their friends and family.

Students had a choice between red bean or lotus flower mooncake.

The festival was orchestrated by the Chinese Cultures class, along with some help from the Interfaith team.

Bruntz used the festival as an assignment for her class, giving students reign over the decorations and the actual event itself.

The festival was also celebrated the year before last, organized by Bruntz.

There are multiple myths and stories associated with this Chinese holiday, however the class stuck with one rendition to tell their peers about.

Junior Allison Jasso, one of the students in the class, said The point of the festival on campus was to bring cultural awareness and education to Doane.

The festival is used to celebrate the years harvest and is similar to the Western notion of Thanksgiving.

Jasso said My favorite part was seeing the joy on the Chinese exchange students faces. It made me really happy to hear from them that we were doing well and that it made them happy.

There are a handful of exchange students from China that came to the event to participate and even teach the students more about the tradition from their point of view.

The myth behind the event is based off of the moon goddess, Change.

In the version taught at the event, Change and her husband, Hou Yi, were thrown to Earth after a misunderstanding with the Jade Emperor.

He made them mortal and banished them from the heavens.

According to the China Educational Tours website, her husband was gifted an immortality elixir by the Mother of the West after explaining the misunderstanding. Drinking half of the potion would grant immortality, while drinking the entirety would make one ascend from Earth as a full immortal.

Her husband brought the elixir home to share but Change got curious and drank the entire bottle.

She then begins to float above the Earth.

She was banned from the heavens, so she landed on the moon to spend entirety alone without her husband.

The mooncakes represent Change on the moon and are a popular dish during the festival season.

Many people head home to be with their families during the festival. The festival represents a collectivist culture and shows reverence toward ones ancestors.

The event allowed students to teach their peers in a less pressured environment. It also allowed students to try some new foods and start a conversation about cultural differences.

The Solace of the Jersey Shore – Splice Today

A place to contemplate loss and recovery.

This summer was framed by my mothers illness and death. The cancer diagnosis came in late June. By early August, she was a hospice patient in the Queens apartment she lived in and where Id grown up. Several weeks before she passed away, I took a break from my daily visits to spend a day and night visiting a friend with my wife and son in Sea Bright, near the northern end of the Jersey Shore. You can easily see Manhattan from the beach there, with Long Island stretching off toward the horizon.

The Jersey Shore is a place of loss and recovery. Our friends house is on stilts, renovated after the flooding of Hurricane Sandy. The Shores on the edge of my personal history; Ive visited it perhaps 15 to 20 times over several decades but never stayed long, a native New Yorker and then northern New Jersey resident who went to the Shore because other people had houses there or wanted to go. Two women friends I associate with Shore trips died before their time.

My friend Chris Tufaro is putting together a folk rock album called Monmouth, the title the name of the town just south of Sea Bright and also of the county. His acoustic ballads tell an intertwined story relating to the destruction Sandy wrought on his familys house on the Shore. His music is suffused with coming to grips with loss.

My mother had a longstanding interest in the paranormal. She left behind hundreds of books on the subject (for which Id be interested in finding a suitable collector) and expressed a desire to make contact from beyond. I plan to visit a paranormal bookstore/museum in Asbury Park that holds seances. I mentioned this place to my mother, so shed know I dont dismiss her wish, and in case that helps her find me.

On the beach at Sea Bright, I read an advance copy of Artificial You: AI and the Future of Your Mind, by philosopher and cognitive scientist Susan Schneider. She offers a skeptical take on the type of immortality hoped for by some enthusiasts of high-tech transhumanism: ones mind being uploaded into a computer. She points out philosophical uncertainties as to whether such a transfer would be an extension of your life or the end of it. She advocates metaphysical humility, a recognition of how little we know about human consciousness and identity.

That sounds like a good approach to me. On the Jersey Shore, which has been battered by forces beyond human control and will be again, its good to remember we dont have a handle on everything.

Samsung has unearthed the secret path to immortal SSDs – Digital Trends

Samsung has announced a set of advances in its solid state drive (SSD) technology that could dramatically extend the lifespan of its storage devices.

Touted as industry-leading innovations, Samsungs cutting-edge SSD software includes a new feature dubbed fail-in-place (FIP) technology, which is where the supposed immortality comes in. The feature claims to have solved the perennial chip burnout problem that plagues flash memory.

Normally, the insulating layer that protects the individual storage units in a sector degrades over time as it is exposed to electricity. This is just a natural consequence of using the SSD, since information is transmitted using an electrical signal. Over time, enough current hitting the insulating layer will cause the mechanism to fail, which means no more data can be overwritten to that sector.

It can, however, still be read. Thats the key to Samsungs new feature. The FIP trick that Samsung unveiled would theoretically be able to detect the failure of individual NAND chips and allow the SSDs built-in software to copy out data to a different sector with a fresh NAND chip. The idea is that all this would be done on the fly while you happily retain your data.

The other technologies on display may not command as much attention as the FIP technology for consumers tired of replacing weatherbeaten SSDs, but the strides that SSD virtualization and V-NAND machine learning make could be just as significant in actual practice for the enterprise market that this software is targeting.

For now, the advertised software improvements will only roll out to Samsungs server-grade PCIe 4 SSD models, specifically the PM1733 series and PM1735 series, which are far too hefty to be inserted into something like a laptop. Both lines will, however, offer models in the PCI express half-height, half-length (HHHL) form factor that could conceivably fit in a desktop chassis.

No pricing has been announced yet, but if prior comparable models are any indication, these new models will cost somewhere in the thousands of dollars. Basically, all but the highest-rollers eager to get their hands on this bleeding-edge data integrity technology will get priced out until Samsung starts shipping SSDs preloaded with this software.

Seven Deadly Sins: 10 Hidden Details You Didnt Know About The Main Characters – CBR – Comic Book Resources

Seven Deadly Sins has grown into a widely popular series for both fans in the East and the West since the anime was released. Beginning as a manga back in October 2012, the series was adapted into an anime series for two seasons, which was widely lauded for its rich story and main characters.

Audiences have grown fond of the main protagonist Meliodas and the rest of his ragtag group. So how much do we know about Meliodas and the gang? With season three around the corner, we take a deep look at our favorite characters.

Click the button below to start this article in quick view

Since were discussing our main guy Meliodas, lets look into his dragon tattoo. Meliodas mark on the tattoo resembles the ancient symbol of Ouroboros, which is a snake eating its own tail. The snake symbolizes infinity and the cycle of life and death. In this instance, we see the dragon eating its own tail on Meliodas arm which works perfectly for him as one of the strongest characters in the series bearing the same strength as a dragon. Because of his fathers powers, Meliodas was cursed with immortality. It's no wonder the Ouroboros symbol represents our main characters struggle with being immortal for all eternity.

The third princess of Liones has become the focal point for the series and is part of the overall story involving her kingdom. We notice that her left pupil is covered up with her hair and we dont get to see her full power till the end of season one. Her true power actually comes from her left eye that glows orange at full strength. What you see on the eye is the symbol showing a triple spiral that represents the Triple Goddess of maiden, mother, and crone. This reflects the stages of a womans life as shown in the moon phases. It makes sense that she would have this knowing she is a descendant and apostle of the Goddess clan in the series.

Diane is one of the members of the Deadly Sins belonging to the Giants clan in the land of Megadozer, which explains her humongous size. Diane bears the symbol of the serpent sin of envy on her left thigh with the power of creation using the ground.

Based on Arthurian legend, her name may be related to Diana of the Wood who has a strong connection to nature. She mentions being 29 feet tall but shes actually 30 feet in height since shes self-conscious about her height. She has lived for 750 years although series creator Nabaka Suzuki claimed that in human years, shes younger than Elizabeth.

Ban bears the mark of the Fox and represents the Sin of Greed. His name actually comes from King Ban, who turns out to be the father of Sir Lancelot in the Arthurian legend. Just like the myth, he fell for Elaine but circumstances led to him losing her while gaining the power of immortality after her death. We know Ban loves to cook and hell eat anything except for food made by Meliodas who is horrible at it. As an Aquarius born on Valentines Day, Ban resembles much of the features that come with being an Aquarius, which includes being charming, romantic, and impulsive.

King was originally the King of the Fairies before he became the Sin of Sloth. Despite not having wings, King is good at flying and being able to levitate anything he touches. He can also manipulate nature at a molecular level by either growing trees from the ground up or just spreading toxins in the air. His back story is a lot similar to King Herla in the old Arthurian legend where he leaves his kingdom and comes back to find some big changes and the loss of a loved one. What we notice is that King seems to have a thing for Diane so its no wonder he likes to spy on her from time to time.

The Sin of Lust Gowther just loves to read in his spare time when he isnt in battle. Gowther doesnt display much emotion since he really is a doll created with magic. Rather than a cow and the color blue, Gowthers animal symbol is a goat with red on it.

RELATED:10 Anime To Watch ON Netflix Right Now

He always has his glasses on, revealing that he cant always see whats around him if he has them taken off. Gowther apparently has a lot of power going into peoples memories and messing with them. He can even transform his appearance so no one can recognize him out in the open.

Regarded as the most powerful mage in Brittania, Merlin is over 3,000 years old bearing the boars Sin of Gluttony. No one knows what race she belongs to, but her youthful appearance is due to the fact that she used magic to stop herself from aging. Its no surprise that she shares the same name as the legendary mage and advisor to King Arthur. As revealed in the manga, the tattoos of each animal of the deadly sins were created by Merlins magic. She is the only one of the characters whos personality reflects the sin she bears. In the manga, it was also hinted that the person Merlin professed her love to was Meliodas.

Also known as the Lions Pride, Escanor has probably one of the biggest tattoos out of all the Deadly Sins. Although his powers are useless at night, his strength grows during the day based on his physical appearance. In his strongest state, he seems to have control over his body when it exerts heat. He also goes through a personality change, so its no wonder Escanor prefers his night time appearance. He also happens to have a crush on Merlin even though she doesnt. Escanor has the same name as the Arthurian legend who also grew in strength by each hour. Escanor also likes to write poetry in his downtime.

Meliodas pet companion Hawk served as the comic relief of the series. A lot of fans thought of Hawk as a female when in fact the character is actually a male. His name was also originally Hork, which in translation to English means to clean vomit. It certainly fits with who he is since he does eat leftovers. If you knew the back story of Meliodas, he had a companion similar to Hawk in the form of a parrot named Wendell, implying that Hawk could possibly be the reincarnation of him since they share the same personalities. For those who read the one-shot manga, Hawks mom in the anime was actually replaced by a moving fortress with legs that was similar to Howls Moving Castle.

The King of Camelot as fans know bears the same name as the famous legend of King Arthur. Being a skilled swordsman, Arthur does have a high amount of magic energy that rivals most of the Deadly Sins. He shares the same relationship with Merlin as the myth. Each of the characters has some sort of connection with him, especially Meliodas. Arthur sees Meliodas as a mentor but is disheartened when he finds out that Meliodas gave in to his demonic nature. He also offered Meliodas a position among the Holy Knights at one point but denied taking it until the Kingdom was saved.

The Ultimate Guide To Riverside Park, The Lowkey Best Park In NYC – Gothamist

Pelham Bay Park is the biggest park in the city. Central Park is the most filmed public park in the world. Flushing Meadows Corona Park was home to both World's Fairs and was commemorated by F. Scott Fitzgerald in The Great Gatsby. Prospect Park is home to the longest continuous meadow of any urban park in the United States and one of the most famous trees in NYC.

And then there's Riverside Park, spanning more than 330 acres of parkland from 59th to 155th Street, forever in the shadow to its big sister in Manhattan, Central Park. Riverside was designed by Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux, the same people who designed Central Park, Prospect Park, Morningside Park, and Fort Greene Park, in the late 19th century. It is one of the unheralded nature-oriented treasures of the city; it's a perfect place for long walks and exercise, it boasts spectacular river vistas, and it's rarely overcrowded like those other more popular Manhattan parks.

It's rich in history too: George Washington once suggested that the US Capitol be built on the hill north of where Grants Tomb now stands, around 122nd Street. Edgar Allen Poe composed The Raven at what is now 84th Street and Broadway, and was reportedly inspired by a spot in the park around there where he used to sit and contemplate.

Today, there are more than 25 monuments, plaques, and statues situated throughout the park, which spans three distinct levels at different points; it's also home to two of the five monuments in NYC dedicated to historic women.

Riverside Park is one of only ten scenic landmarks in all of New York City, and for good reason. It has unique waterfront beauty, with rocky areas, spectacular lawns, and stately trees. And importantly, Riverside Park has the character of New Yorkers: it is resilient, very good looking, and tries not to take itself too seriously, said Dan Garodnick, President & CEO of the Riverside Park Conservancy.

Below, we'll lead you on a tour of some of the many highlights of the park, and you can check out more photos of the park up above.

Up until 2001, the park nominally began at 72nd Street, but a six phase expansion project has stretched it all the way down to 59th Street. Most of this expansion was focused on new walkways and landscaping, but it also included, at 62nd Street, a train locomotive known as No. 25. It's a 60-year-old, 95-ton engine that was previously used on the Brooklyn waterfront. It was built in 1946 and is identical to engines that moved freight cars along the West Side from the 1940s to the 1980s.

The area was the former site of the New York Central Railroads 60th Street Yard, which explains the amount of railroad-related vestiges and landmarks there. In the '80s, Trump bought the rights to the property and proposed turning it into a mini-city that would be a testament to all things Donald Trump. He first called it "Television City," then settled on "Trump City." It would include six 76-story towers; the centerpiece skyscraper would be the worlds tallest building, and he was going to live at the top. The NY Times called it at the time his bid for immortality. You may be shocked to learn the project never came to fruitionyou can read more about Trump's failed project herebut Trump did get to brand a development in the area when Hong Kong developers took over the investment. (The branding has not lasted forever.)

As you walk north, you'll see some public art piecesthese rotate in and out, though the one in the photos is known as "Viewfinding" until you make it to The 69th Street Transfer Bridge National Landmark, the decaying, preserved remnants of a dock where train cars would be transferred on and off barges travelling between New York and New Jersey along the New York Central Railroad. Between the abandoned pier pylons and rusting gantry, as the Parks Dept. puts it, "weeds and wildflowers grow through the wooden planks of dilapidated piers, crickets chirp, and birds nest."

Then you'll hit Pier I at 70th Street, which were also originally part of the abandoned railyard. Next to it is the Pier I cafe, one of a select handful of outdoor cafes and restaurants located in the park with gorgeous views of the Hudson River and New Jersey (which sounds like a joke, but honestly, NJ looks a lot nicer from this side). It isn't open year-round, but it does have french friessomething which the Boat Basin at 79th Street doesn't always have, to the chagrin of locals.

Immediately above that, at 72nd Street and Riverside Drive, you can see the Eleanor Roosevelt Monument. Created by artist Penelope Jencks in 1996, the eight-foot statue of Roosevelt is constructed of bronze and stone, and was the first public statue of a presidents wife in the nation. It was also only the second public statue of an American woman in NYC, though there's been some progress on that front recently.

At 72nd Street, the park begins to expand even more (there's a popular dog park right there as well): You'll find lots of grassy areas and knolls if you venture eastward into the park. At 76th Street and Riverside Drive, you can find the Hamilton Fountain, an ornately carved marble fountain which is surmounted by a giant eagle, wings spread. Designed by Warren & Wetmore, the same architects of Grand Central Station, the fountain was intended primarily as a drinking fountain for horses when it was installed in 1906.

Its inscription reads, Bequeathed to the people of New York by Robert Ray Hamilton." Hamilton, adescendantof Alexander Hamilton, was a wealthy sportsman, businessman and politician. His background is remarkable, so I feel compelled to share what the Parks Dept. wrote about him: "[He] drowned on a hunting trip in 1890. He was surrounded by scandal at the time of his death, since he was in the midst of a divorce from his wife, a known bigamist who was in prison for 'atrocious assault.' His wife, it seems, in addition to having another husband, had attempted to steal another womans child, and stabbed the babys nurse in a fight. In his will Hamilton left $9,000 to build the fountain in his memory. The highly respectable Hamilton family did not want a monument erected in honor of the black sheep member of their family, and they strongly opposed the fountain."

Moving on! At 79th Street you'll hit the Boat Basin, with its dramatic rotunda, which is by far the most popular of the cafes in the park. The Boat Basin contains 116 slips and is used as a launch site for kayaks, canoes and sailboats. On an average summer weekend day, the cafe will be filled to the brim with tourists and localsif you like watching yachts pull in to refuel, it's the best spot in the city. It's also a great excuse to wander around the area while you wait for a seat to open up.

One of the best parts of wandering the park is enjoying all the various pathways; the main one, which overlooks the Henry Hudson Parkway, is a utopian stretch filled on warm autumn days with cyclists, skateboarders, rollerbladers, pets and pedestrians. For people intimidated by traversing the NYC roadways, it's a great stretch on which to get comfortable riding a Citi Bike, or to take a romantic stroll.

At 89th Street and Riverside Drive, you'll find the Soldiers' and Sailors' Memorial Monument, which commemorates Union Army soldiers and sailors who served in the Civil War. It is an enlarged version of the Choragic Monument of Lysicrates in Athens; it was completed in 1906, and was designated a state landmark in 2001. Also located there are the Riverside Civil War Cannons.

There are at least 14 playgrounds for children located throughout the park, but two of the best are located just at 91st Street. Hippo Playground, which includes the unmistakable Hippopotamus Fountain, was renovated and christened in 1993. Just a few blocks away is Dinosaur Playground, which is home to two fiberglass dinosaurs, a triceratops and a hadrosaur. If you squint, you may recognize it from a little film called The Warriorsthe playground was partially used for the big Conclave scenes.

Also starting around 91st Street, you get the 91st Street Garden & Crabapple Grove, which all romcom fans will instantly recognize from the end of You've Got Mail. Over at 93rd Street and Riverside, you'll find the bronze Joan Of Arc Memorial, depicting the 15th century French patriot and martyr on a horse, which was sculpted by Anna Hyatt Huntington in 1915.

As you head north within the park, you'll hit the area in the park with the most amount of sports fields and facilities, including: four baseball fields between 104th to 107th Streets (there's also one at 72nd Street, and two pairs of baseball fields that each overlap with another sporting field at 77th and 146th/147th Streets); two basketball courts at 102nd and 111th (there's also courts at 71st, 76th and 148th); five handball courts at 111th (there are two more at 71st); three soccer fields at 101st, 103rd and 107th (there are three more at 71st, 74th and 77th as well); a massive 20 tennis courts (10 each at 96th and 119th); two sand-strewn volleyball courts at 102nd and 105th (there's one more up at 148th as well); and a set of traveling rings at 105th Street. The skate park at 108th is currently under renovation and is expected to reopen in May 2020.

Everything between 96th and 125th streets is idyllic: there is an abundance of benches, picnic spots, and cozy trees to sit under. It's almost never crowded, yet it's always teeming with sunbathers and off-leash dogs. If you live in Brooklyn or Queens or lower Manhattan, and you're looking for an excuse for a lowkey daytrip within the city, you can't do better than visiting this section of the park. In the spring, you can travel the Cherry Walk, where cherry blossoms sprout beautiful shades of red.

You can stop by the Bird Sanctuary any time of year. Located roughly between 116th and 124th streets, New York City Audubon says over 177 species of birds have been seen at the bird sanctuary in the past 30 years. Just south of 120th Street is the Bird Drip, a man-made water source where birds come to drink and bathe. It's active from mid-April to mid-May and September to mid-October; it's reportedly attracted over 80 species of birds.

The real unheralded gem of this area is Ellington In The Park, another outdoor cafe/restaurant that spans two levels and overlooks the Hudson. The food is what it is, but you can't beat the atmosphere (nor the ability to drink out in the open as you please). Unlike Pier I and Boat Basin, it is almost never too crowded, so you can actually snag a seat at sunset on a Friday night. There is a well-kept dog run direct across from it, so expect a lot of very tuckered out dogs to be around.

Also in this general area: there's the Firemen's Memorial, located at the east side of Riverside Drive at 100th Street at the top of a stairway going toward the main street. There's a statue of General Franz Sigel, a Union Army general, on horseback, also at the top of a stairway at 106th Street. And there's a stone statue of Hungarian leader Louis Kossuth, located at 113th Street and Riverside.

In the 120s, you hit what I like to think of as the "Plaque District" of the park. That includes the Armed Forces Plaque, at 121st Street (it was dedicated in 1953); Battle of Harlem Heights Marker, at 121st Street (dedicated in 1961); Chaplains Memorial, at 121st Street, (dedicated in 1950); Chinese Tablet, at about 124th Street above Grant's Tomb (dedicated 1897); and Claremont Inn Tablet, at 123rd Street (dedicated in 1952).

And of course there is Grant's Tomb, located in the median of Riverside Drive at 122nd Street. It was inspired by the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus and designed by John Hemenway Duncan in 1897. It's a city landmark, a national monument, and the inspiration for one of the greatest's children's jokes. And on the slope north of it, you'll find The Amiable Child Monument, which is a remarkable piece. One side of the monument reads: Erected to the Memory of an Amiable Child, St. Claire Pollock, Died 15 July 1797 in the Fifth Year of His Age. It was originally erected by George Pollock, who is believed to have been either the boy's father or his uncle. It is also believed to be the only single-person private grave on city-owned land in NYC.

The main section of the park essentially ends after that. Around 129th Street, you have the West Harlem Piers, but otherwise the park gets very, very narrow there. It doesn't start up again until approximately 135th Street. If you hit that higher region, you won't want to miss out on the Ralph Ellison Memorial at 150th Street, sculpted by Elizabeth Catlett in 2003. There are three inscriptions on the bronze structure, including one which notes that Ellison was a longtime resident nearby at 730 Riverside Drive. Also near there, you can see an installation through the Model to Monument partnership with the Art Students League at the 145th Street waterfront. And finally, 155th Street marks the end of the park, adjacent to Riverbank State Park.

One last thing worth noting: for the more adventurous among you, you'll want to look into the Freedom Tunnel, a railroad tunnel located under the Park. According to The Power Broker, the tunnel was built by Robert Moses in the 1930s to expand park space for UWS residents. It was used for freight trains until 1980, when regular operations ended. Since then, it's sometimes been a homeless enclave, a graffiti mecca, and a must-see destination for urban explorers. It got its name because of graffiti artist Chris "Freedom" Pape, who used the tunnel walls to create some of his most notable artwork. You can see more photos of it here, and get more info about how to get there here.

Deep Animation Studio The Thinklab to Relocate to Navarre for Future Projects (EXCLUSIVE) – Variety

SAN SEBASTIAN Spains The Thinklab, based in Madrid since its founding in 2006, has confirmed toVarietythat it will be packing up its digital paintbrushes and heading north to founder Julio Sotos homeland of Navarre where the company will establish a new studio for the purposes of producing two feature-length CGI animated films, and possibly a third.

Soto credits the territorys generous fiscal incentives and a desire to grow a Spanish animation industry as the impetus for the move.

With one animated feature already under its belt, 2017s Deep, The Thinklab is planning on growing it and Spains impact on the international animation community, open to and actively seeking out international partners on its ambitious upcoming feature projects Evolution and Inspector Sun.

A third title is in early development at the studio, but details wont be announced until more robust financing is secured.

The companys other recent works include Fluffs! a 3D animated TV series produced for the Disney Channel, live-action feature documentary My Beautiful Dacia and Dissection of a Storm, a HollyShorts jury winning short which qualified for the Oscars in 2011.

Set in a 1920s noir world of insects where spiders act as a police force, in Inspector Sun an eight-legged detective boards a seaplane to San Francisco having finally apprehended his longtime adversary. After a passenger is murdered on voyage, however, he is drawn into an unexpected series of events which threaten both the human and bug worlds.

In Evolution, an alien substance blends a young girl named Zoes DNA with that of her pets, creating a team of intelligent animals led by the wild girl.

Intent on growing and improving its product, according to Soto, the two new Thinklab films will be more ambitious in both the quality of their animation, and the breadth of their appeal.

Since we released Deep the market has pushed more towards older audiences, Soto explained. So, with the next two we are going to do in Navarra we want to appeal to an audience age range wider than what we did then.

Production-wise the company plans to re-partner with some of the organizations and people that backed Deep. Although they arent ready to announce any specifics yet, they have secured financing and pre-sales in territories which will help them towards their ambitious goals and assure that both projects will be truly international from the beginning.

Much like the films it makes, the company itself has a socially conscious agenda of its own. And, while Navarres generous fiscal incentives are essential to the companys ability to finance their work, thats far from the only reason to relocate to Navarre.

One of the things that excites Julio is that, In a tiny corner of Spain called Navarra, two big, international productions will be made that will appeal to the international market.

According to Soto, native Spanish animation talent needs opportunities and incentives to stay, or even return to Spain for work.

When you look at Deep, it was partially produced in Belgium, and as many as 40% of the animators there were Spanish, which is quite ironic, he recalled.

Its a bit of a shame because its an indication of something we are doing wrong in Spain. Why are we allowing this talent to go away when we should be building an animation industry here? In a good year in Spain there are one or two big features. Thats not much an industry. Some of Spains most talented people have to go to places like Ireland, France, Canada or Belgium to find consistent work.

As an example, Deep had a production period of two years, employed 250 professionals and trained many of the staff that will return for the companys next two features.

Animation became part of the Navarre Film Institutes strategy in 2015, and in 2018 we started seeing the results of that strategy with companies coming to produce animated movies and series from here, said commission head Javier Lacunza of the agencys push to attract increasingly larger entities to the area.

He added, The Thinklab will consolidate this trend, which wants to focus on going forward. Its more stable in employment, it has longer periods for projects, it requires hiring fully digitally competent employees and therefore provides infrastructure for the employment of young people and skilled artists.

Amtrak Dining Car Service Disappearing, They Call It Evolution – Patch.com

WASHINGTON, DC Amtrak is taking a page out of Charles Darwin. Instead of saying that they are doing away with the traditional dining car service, Amtrak says that they continue to "evolve the travel experience."

Beginning Oct. 1, diners on several overnight routes will no longer have the option of heading to the dining car, sit down in a boot and order a freshly made meal. No longer will that meal be placed in in front of you on pressed white tablecloths.

Passengers will instead choose from a menu of prepackaged meals.

The change goes into effect on the Cardinal, City of New Orleans, Crescent, and Silver Meteor.

Next year, the Silver Star will be added to the list.

"Traveling on one of our trains has never been just about the destination the journey is part of the adventure," Amtrak President and CEO Richard Anderson said in a release.

"We continue to evolve our onboard accommodations and dining experience to meet the needs of today's customers."

For breakfast diners will now be able to select from items including hard boiled eggs, a breakfast sandwich, yogurtm and a selection of muffins.

The lunch and dinner menu includes red wine braised beef, chicken fettuccini with broccoli, and an Asian noodle bowl. There's also pasta and meatballs for kids.

While Amtrak says that the move is a cost-cutting one, they put a positive spin on it, pointing out that no longer will there be a need for reservations and riders can have the food delivered to their rooms.

The change has already been made on the Capitol Limited and the Lake Shore Limited.

Amtrak says that, for now, the traditional dining car service remains on their seven other overnight routes: Auto Train, California Zephyr, Coast Starlight, Empire Builder, Southwest Chief, Sunset Limited, and Texas Eagle.

Christianity, evolution are mutually exclusive | Letters To The Editor – Mankato Free Press

The Free Press is delivered to my door every day and I appreciate its information about our community and our world. However, on Sept. 16 the paper made some claims about how we should understand our world.

I must respond.

First, the claim that evolutionary theory has been strengthened over the decades fails to recognize recent events. In the last few decades there have been numerous scientists who have found that living organisms are too complex to have evolved by random mutations. Considerable controversy has erupted among scientists.

Secondly, the claim that Christianity and evolution are not mutually exclusive is false in my view. Darwinian evolution claims that life emerged on earth by accident and increased in complexity by undirected, random mutations over millions of years. Such a process intentionally leaves no room for a Creator.

Holy Scripture reveals that God created all forms of life in a six-day period. Christianity and evolution are mutually exclusive.

Finally, I agree that students dont get a well-grounded education in biology. However, this is not due to teachers reluctance to speak for evolution. The problem is that the Darwinian theory (including neo-Darwinism) is inadequate.

Over 1,000 scientists from around the world have signed The Scientific Dissent from Darwinism, which states: We are skeptical of claims for the ability of random mutation and natural selection to account for the complexity of life.

The signers hold doctorates from universities such as Oxford, Cambridge, Harvard, Dartmouth, Rutgers, University of Chicago, Stanford and the University of California-Berkeley. Their fields are biology, chemistry, mathematics, engineering, computer science, and more.

Why isnt the word getting out?

The Evolution Of Cybersecurity – ISBuzz News

Demands and expertise of the security industry are driven by technological advancement on both sides of the attack/defence fence

Increased computer power, artificial intelligence, and tools on the Dark Web are equipping cyber attackers with the resources to launch more sophisticated and destructive attacks. Reactive defenses are no longer enough to stop attackers from infiltrating even the best security architectures. Environmental dynamics are also changing and disrupting resiliency with the rapid adoption of cloud infrastructure and the proliferation of IoT devices. The concept of a perimeter as we have known it is disappearing, and the battle against cybercrime has moved inside the network. With this shift, organisations need to rethink their security strategies as well as the tools they have traditionally come to rely on.

The threat landscape shift over the last 20 years

Attacks are getting both more and less sophisticated. More sophisticated in the targeted phishing email attacks and less in the spray and pray attacks that bombard similar companies with similar forms of attacks. With these, instead of being strategic, they are being opportunistic and preying on the mistakes and simple misconfigurations that lead way to an easy attack. Earlier forms of attacks focused on credit card and PHI theft, these remain active but are also now accompanied by ransomware and crypto-mining attacks (mining and the theft of cryptocurrencies) in an effort for simpler and more instant gratification.

Changes to the threat landscape are changing the strategic considerations of boards and business leaders

With the increased risks of a cyber attack, cybersecurity needs to be on the mind of both boards and business leaders. This is not only to prevent disruption of service and loss of revenue, but also to maintain a competitive advantage. Business must constantly innovate in the services the offer and in how they are delivered. Falling behind will be at the expense of customer loyalty and sales. Plus, with the change in generational interests, not appealing to the millennial need for open and on demand access could also result in company obsolescence.

The role cybersecurity companies have to play in guiding organisations through this ever-changing, always evolving, threatscape

Cybersecurity companies must adapt their approaches to security and solutions to align with the new perimeter-less network. This will drive a shift in thinking and product design to address security in multi-cloud, IoT, and other inter-connected environments. Better solutions will also need to be provided that deliver more accurate detection, remove false positive alert fatigue, and provide adversary intelligence so that an organization can completely eradicate the threat and fortify their defenses. Cybersecurity companies also need to align with newer technology innovators so that systems can automate for information sharing and response action. An example of this would be taking a deception technology detection alert and feeding the adversary intelligence to a SIEM or Threat Orchestration Tool. Achieving a full detection fabric across all attack surfaces with coverage for all attack methods requires multiple technologies. Collaboration amongst the technology vendors plus helping organisations understand how to align their security stack will result in optimal protection and detection results.

Threats will continue to evolve and be challenging to keep in front of. Instead, I would suggest readying for the attacks based on the methods, which tend to be very consistent. By using technologies that provide early and accurate detection of these activities, an organisation can stop an attack early in the attack lifecycle and before they are likely to cause harm. Noting, new technologies, deception is playing a critical role in providing early detection for these attack methods across legacy and emerging attack surfaces.

Ceres: Evolution of the Asteroid Belt’s Icy Giant – Eos

Ceres, the largest object in the asteroid belt, is composed of rock and ice. NASAs Dawn spacecraft, which orbited Ceres between 2015 and 2018 gave scientists lots of new insights into its shape and internal structure, surface morphology, and composition. A special collection in Journal of Geophysical Research: Planets focuses on evidence of ice in Ceres subsurface and its dynamical behavior. I asked Hanna Sizemore, guest editor of the special collection, some questions about the mission and what has been discovered.

Ceres was one of two bodies in the asteroid belt visited by NASAs Dawn mission. Why was Ceres a focal point of this exploration mission?

Ceres and Vesta are generally viewed as two extreme cases of the possible evolution of large asteroids. Before the Dawn mission, both objects were thought to have formed in the same neighborhood but at different times. Because Vesta formed early, it accreted Aluminium-26 (26Al), which produced abundant internal heat and rapid loss of water and other volatiles. Ceres formed later, experienced less heating, and was able to retain much more of its water [McCord and Sotin, 2005].

An important goal of the Dawn mission was linking large asteroid interiors to early conditions in the protoplanetary disk, with Ceres representing one extreme scenario. There has been a long debate about how much of Earths water was delivered from the main belt, and whether it came in the form of hydrated minerals or ice. The amount of water in the main belt is only beginning to be inventoried.

Having a spacecraft in orbit around an ice-rich main belt object is extremely valuable. There are big challenges in linking surface composition information derived from telescope data to information about asteroid interiors [Rivkin et al., 2019]. These challenges make having a spacecraft in orbit around an ice-rich main belt object extremely valuable. As both the largest and the most ice-rich object in the main belt, Ceres was a prime target for a mission.

The special collection has a focus on water ice.How has ice been an important factor in shaping the evolution of the surface of Ceres?

Ceres owes its internal structure and its spherical shape to ice.At the most basic level, Ceres owes its internal structure and its spherical shape to ice. It was able to partially differentiate (to form a rocky interior surrounded by an icy outer shell) because ice melts at lower temperatures than rock. It was able to retain enough mass to be spherical because it was cool enough to hang on to most of its H2O and other volatiles, unlike Vesta.

Ice also plays a key role in modern landscape development on Ceres.Of course, ice also plays a key role in modern landscape development on Ceres. There are eight broad classes of surface features that have been specifically linked to subsurface ice and are observed over most of the dwarf planets surface [Sizemore et al., 2019b].

Large domical mountains, such as Ahuna Mons [Reusch et al., 2019], were some of the first to be recognized in the earliest images to be returned by Dawn. Some of these mountains may be cryovolcanoes, or they may be formed by massive ice diapirs [Sori et al., 2018; Sizemore et al., 2019b].

Lobate landslides and ejecta were also recognized as ice-controlled features early in the Dawn mission [Schmidt et al, 2017].

Landslides are nearly everywhere on Ceres, but they are morphologically diverse [Chilton et al., 2019; Duarte et al., 2019].

Some show similarities to rock glaciers on Earth and Mars, some have characteristics in common with landslides on Iapetus.

Ice in Ceres subsurface contributes to the formation of fluidized, lobate, and layered ejecta around craters.

In some cases, Cerean ejecta is similar to layered ejecta formed in icy terrains on Mars and Ganymede [Hughson et al., 2019].

Intermingling of ice-rich ejecta and landslides creates unique Cerean terrains [Duarte et al., 2019]. Some smooth ejecta on Ceres is also pitted, probably due to water vapor and other gasses escaping soon after the impact [Sizemore et al., 2017].

Large-scale fractures in crater interiors have been linked to upwelling of ice and brines in the subsurface [Buczkowski et al., 2019]. Ice also causes craters themselves to relax on Ceres, sometimes leading to fracturing around crater rims that retain distinct topography [Otto et al., 2019] and, more rarely, flattening the topography of large craters [Bland et al., 2018].

Isnt there also evidence that Ceres is active including losing material to space? Why is this happening and why is it important?

There are two main lines of evidence that Ceres outgasses water to space, at least periodically.

The first line of evidence comes from astronomical observations of Ceres from Earth. In the early 1990s, the International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE) detected OH near Ceres limb [AHearn & Feldman, 1992]. In 2014, immediately prior to Dawns arrival at Ceres, water vapor was detected by the Herschel Space Observatory [Kppers et al., 2014]. Both of these detections spurred speculation about cometary style outgassing and/or possible cryovolcanism on Ceres.

The second line of evidence for episodic outgassing comes from Ceres geomorphology and minerology, as observed by Dawn. In Occator Crater, we see bright carbonate deposits (faculae) that likely formed via extrusion or even fountaining of brines on to the surface in the last several million years [Scully et al., 2019]. Problematically, Dawn did not observe any direct evidence for outgassing during its mission at Ceres or active brine extrusion. Any outgassing from faculae formation would have stopped millions of years ago, so it cannot explain the IUE and Herschel detections.

Explaining the Herschel data in particular has been challenging. Ice in Ceres subsurface is slowly receding to greater depths, which produces a steady background rate of water vapor loss much lower than the Herschel rate [Landis et al., 2017]. Any time ice is exposed on the surface, it will quickly sublimate. So stochastic events, landslides and small impacts that expose ice, can cause short bursts of outgassing. A cluster of these events might have produced the water vapor detected by Herschel [Landis et al., 2018].

Additionally, seasonal changes in shadowing on crater walls may lead to periodic accumulation and sublimation of surface ice [Formisano et al., 2019a; 2019b].

These passive, near-surface processes most likely drove the outgassing events observed in 1992 and 2014, although we cant be certain.

Near-surface processes fall under the umbrella of cometary style outgassing. Understanding these processes is important, because they likely operate on numerous small, volatile rich bodies throughout the solar system, and dominate water vapor production at Ceres today.

Regular outgassing from stochastic, passive processes does not preclude more dramatic outbursts of water from deeper in the interior in the recent geologic past.

There is ongoing work to understand the formation of the bright spots in Occator, and the development of the large cryovolcano Ahuna Mons.

With NASAs Dawn mission having come to an end what are the next steps in the exploration of Ceres now that we know how important water ice has been for the body?

In the near term, there is work to do to understand the Dawn data better. In the near term, there is work to do on Earth to understand the Dawn data better. In particular, laboratory experiments to determine the material properties of the unique mixtures of ice, salts, and clays that occur on Ceres. Knowing more about the properties of these mixtures will allow us to build better models of Ceres structure and evolution [Sizemore et al. 2019a].

Longer term, of course, we hope there will be new spacecraft missions.Longer term, of course, we hope there will be new spacecraft missions. These might include orbiters with instrumentation designed specifically to interrogate the ice and brine content of Ceres interior at depths we couldnt probe effectively with Dawns instrument payload.

For example, an orbiter carrying a sounding radar could help us quantify the ice content of lobate landslides and ejecta, helping us understand stratigraphy at the 100 meter to 1 kilometer scale. An orbital magnetometer could constrain whether or not there is a deep brine layer. And of course, a future lander might be able to directly sample the structure and chemistry of the ice much like the Phoenix lander did on Mars.
