Panelists Discuss Technology and Race at Harvard IOP Event | News – Harvard Crimson

Academics and media experts warned of the limits of inclusion in technology at a forum hosted by the Institute of Politics on Wednesday evening.

The panelists at the event dubbed The Politics of Difference: Race, Technology, and Inclusion discussed a variety of topics, ranging from targeted advertising in social media to video game culture wars.

Joan Donovan, the director of the Technology and Social Change Research Project at the Shorenstein Center, moderated the event. Donovan opened the panel by pointing to a culture shift in technology and inclusion.

Theres a lot of inclusionary rhetoric that we traffic in exclusionary politics, she said.

Harvard Kennedy School professor and panelist Khalil Muhammad spoke about his research on state-weaponization of big data. He said crime statistics have been used as a measure of citizenship and justification for eugenics and immigration restrictions.

They claim the data itself was divorced from a political agenda. It was just a simple articulation of the facts of the choices that individuals made in some way. And the data just accumulates in their behavior, he said. But of course, their behavior was subject to surveillance and was subject to different standards of treatment, and justice, etcetera.

Panelist Latoya Peterson, known for her award-winning blog Racialicious.com, shared the story of the time a reader suggested she look into a piece about white supremacists using search engine optimization to hijack the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Peterson said she found that white supremacist groups were manipulating search rankings to reroute people looking for information about King to white supremacy pages disguised as sites focused on civil rights.

We're now also dealing with the rise of white supremacy online, she said. Racial terror tactics migrate.

Panelist Ruha Benjamin an associate professor of African American Studies at Princeton explained this phenomenon as the innovation of racism.

We're trained to think about racism as sort of what happens in the backwoods as a byproduct of not knowing things, she said. But the fact that is that its often forward looking.

At the end of the event, the panelists stressed the need for more diversity in newsrooms, digital platforms, and technology, as well as collective organization to push innovation in the right direction.

The more you come to a community of people who can collaborate and share resources to get those apps or whatever it happens to be off the ground, the more likely we are to move the needle, Muhammad said.

Graduate student Cierra B. Robson who attended the event said her main takeaway was that technology moves in very interesting, often unintended ways.

That doesn't mean that it's necessarily bad, but it does mean that we need to be cautious, she said.

This Dystopian Hell Hole Nightmarish Hellscape That Democrats Are Putting Out

Whoopi Goldberg repeatedly fact-checked Meghan McCains analysis on The View of Sen. Bernie Sanders remarks about population control in light of climate change.

The Democratic presidential candidate agreed that family planning was a key feature in addressing climate catastrophe, and McCain backed her friend S.E. Cupps assessment of the remarks as an endorsement of eugenics.

Population growth is on the decline, McCain said. The worlds population is projected to nearly stop growing by the end of the century and in all clarity, I think people know this, but S.E. Cupp is one of my closest friends, and I agree with that. We were actually texting each other when this moment happened in the climate change debate.

Any time youre talking about population control, she added, if youre a pro-life person, it starts sounding alarms. Because, again, like in China they enacted a one-child policy, and now men outnumber women by 70 million in China and India. Its disgusting.

Co-host Sunny Hostin pointed out that wasnt eugenics, which Goldberg had already defined earlier in the discussion, but McCain pressed on.

I believe its a slippery slope towards that, McCain said, and I do think this dystopian hell hole nightmarish hellscape that Democrats are putting out that climate change is just going to end everything to the (point) that were going to have to have population control in this country seems very extreme.

McCain and Abby Huntsman agreed that Sanders seemed to be supporting population control through abortion, while Hostin and Joy Behar argued thats not was he was saying at all and Goldberg cut in with a fact check.

Lets be clear about what he is saying, Goldberg said. Lets not make something up when its not what he said, because when you bring in eugenics, thats a different conversation. That is the controlling of a population because you dont like the size of your nose or theyre too dark.

McCain interjected to say that eugenics disproportionately impacts minorities and people with disabilities, but Goldberg said that was beside the point.

Eugenics doesnt have anything to did with minorities or anybody else, Goldberg said, over McCains protest, and I will say this to you also. Think about all the women in Ireland who for years just wanted birth control, they just wanted birth control because they live in a Catholic country that said you cannot have it.

They were having an insane amount of children, Goldberg added. What these women fought for and pressed for and marched for and got was the right to make that decision for themselves. I think thats clearly and maybe I misinterpreted it, but when he says, I think especially in poor countries around the world, where women do not necessarily want to have large numbers of babies, and where they can have the opportunity through birth control to control the number of kids they have, thats something I support. Thats different than eugenics.

McCain said she heard Sanders through the prism of a conservative, and she was alarmed.

I was shocked by what was coming out of his mouth, McCain said, and clearly everyone else at the table thought it was normal and just in the vein of climate change.

Huntsman was also alarmed, and the panelists argued over Sanders meaning, but Goldberg stepped back in again to restore order.

Listen, you can be pissed at what he said all you want to, she said, but report it correctly.

Questioning the Truth behind ‘Climate Catastrophe’ – Alameda Sun

Every day on TV, the radio, or in the pages of the Alameda Sun, we are confronted with warnings of looming armageddon. With few exceptions, the speaker or writer assumes that we all know as a matter of established fact, that human activity is causing the warming of the planet and that reducing our carbon footprint is the moral thing to do. But is this actually true?

Children are getting this message in ever-louder doses in schools. This is going to escalate with the hoopla around the U.N. Climate Action Summit. Students are being organized to go on strike in protests across the country. Similar strikes in Europe have already led to the blocking of traffic and the defacing of statues of Bach and Beethoven by the Extinction Rebellion.

Its a time to pause and reflect. I certainly do not believe that most people advocating reducing our carbon footprint intend to cause economic misery and premature deaths by the millions in Africa, or the turning of American youth into zombies who hate humanity, but we must soberly look at the real world consequences of the growing frenzy.

According to an Energy Access Database study in 2017, more than 1 billion have no access to electricity at all. This impacts food production, sanitation, health care virtually everything. We need to produce a lot more power over the coming few decades. We simply cannot do it with windmills and solar panels.

Even nuclear power, a very reliable source, does not produce carbon dioxide but can only make a modest contribution in the near future, as the entire world cannot build enough power plants fast enough.

I believe well need to add something like 8,000 gigawatts over the next couple of decades to bring the worlds population up to a reasonable standard. Thats triple our current capacity! I believe that without a large increase of electric power from fossil fuels, millions of people will die and die young.

The undercurrent of the environmentalist message given to young people today is that there are just too many people on the planet using up a shrinking supply of resources and polluting pristine nature. This has been the theme since the early days of the environmentalist movement.

Senator Gaylord Nelson, founder of Earth Day, was a big advocate of population limitation. Julian Huxley, a founder of the World Wildlife Fund, was a leader of the British Eugenics Society; his co-founder Prince Bernhard of Holland had been a member of the Nazi Party. There are many other unsavory cases.

With this message being drummed into our children, is it a wonder that some go bonkers? Patrick Crusius, the El Paso killer, who in the manifesto he allegedly posted before his killing spree, titled, The Inconvenient Truth About Me, he not only railed against Hispanics, but also against human beings in general and consumer culture, saying, If we can get rid of enough people, then our way of life can become more sustainable.

I wont detail the massive funding of the climate-change campaign by well-known billionaires, but will point out whats more significant.

The big central banks, at the Paris Climate Summit of 2015 and the follow-up One Planet Summit in 2017, established the Network for Greening the Financial System. This is where the real muscle lies to nudge the economy away from fossil fuels into green investments. Public celebrities, like Greta Thunberg of Sweden, are merely media-created show-pieces.

But what about the science? Despite the hype, there are thousands of expert scientists who disagree with the alarmists. Many argue that 400 or even 600 ppm of CO2 is nothing to worry about its even helping to green the planet. Others point to the many other factors governing temperature and climate, besides greenhouse gases.

Unfortunately, these scientists have been heavily intimidated and their research suppressed. Who has heard of Nir Shaviv, the Israeli scientist doing groundbreaking work correlating cosmic rays and cloud formation with global ocean temperatures over millions of years? A recent interview with him in Forbes got 40,000 views in a few hours, and then was pulled. Just an example.

The late economist Lyndon LaRouche made enemies by pointing out the connection between environmentalism and fascism, as the cutting of consumption would necessarily require use of force at some point. Now one of the early environmental doomsayers, Dennis Meadows, co-author of The Limits to Growth, admits it, stating in a recent edition of the French newspaper Liberation, that, The rise of authoritarianism is unavoidable.

Maybe its time to rethink the entire paradigm. Why not work with China and India, etc., and build all those power plants we need to uplift humanity? Havent we been sold a bill of goods all these years?

In 10 years, Tesla went from a one-car company to a Porsche rival – Business Insider

Porsche officially launched its first all-electric vehicle, the Taycan. The car has been much-anticipated, and invariably has also been compared with Tesla's offerings. You've seen the headlines: "Tesla Killer" and so on.

The German automaker put together some early media drives in Norway, and so far the reviewers have been impressed if not staggered by the devout Porsche-ness of the Taycan.

But they've also done what they've had to do, which is bring up Tesla as the Taycan's precursor and chief competitor.

In The Wall Street Journal, the redoubtable Dan Neil enthused over the Taycan Turbo (there's also a faster and more expensive Turbo S, and no, the Taycan doesn't have turbocharged electric motors that's just how Porsche ranks its vehicles within the brand's nomenclature). But Neil had to bring up the supercar-fast Tesla Model S P100D and label it the EV champ that the Taycan is taking on.

Read more: In the battle of the Tesla Model S and the Porsche Taycan, it's really no contest

Maybe this seems perfectly natural, if all you know of the automotive realm is Tesla and Toyota. Cars are cars. A-to-B machines. Most run on gas. Tesla's run on electrons. You're aware of this at least.

But in the land of petrol, Porsche is a king and arguably the finest car maker on the planet. The 911 sports car has been in production since the 1960s and is considered by many if not most to be the best go-fast ride that money can buy. Meanwhile, Porsche basically invented the luxury sport SUV market in the early 2000s with the stunningly good Cayenne. The Panamera sedan has its detractors, but there's no debating the cumulative impact of the Porsche portfolio: the profit margins are the envy of the industry.

Sports cars are irrational; just ask anybody who has ever owned a Ferrari. But Porsche captures heartsand minds. It might lack the overtly flamboyant fizz of a Lamborghini, but a Porsche is probably the car you'd choose if you had to drive for your life.

Enter Tesla, which has existed for about 15 years (Porsche has been around for 88). When Elon Musk's company started out, it was selling a single car, and not very many of them: the original Roadster, with volumes in three-digit territory. It was an undeniably cool car, but it was a curiosity.

Matters got more serious in 2012, when the clean-sheet-design Model S sedan arrived. But still, Tesla has been seriously manufacturing its own vehicles for about ten years. If you round up.

For comparison, cars such as the Ford Mustang (born in 1965) and the Chevy Corvette (born in 1953) have established Porsche-beating credibility in just their most recent iterations, when Ford and Chevy decided that they should be capable of challenging Europe's best.

See also:Apply here to attend IGNITION: Transportation, an event focused on the future of transportation, in San Francisco on October 22.

Ask anybody in the car business if the business is hard and they'll look at you as if you had a second head. It isn't hard. It'simpossible. The destiny of aspiring car makers, almost uniformly, is to fail. See Tucker. See Fisker. Even relative legends struggle: Aston Martin has gone bankrupt seven times.

Tesla hasn't just not gone bankrupt (despite being close in 2008) it's become Porsche's biggest rival for the future of driving, at least according to some.

I actually don't think Tesla and Porsche are rivals in any meaningful sense. But there's no avoiding the discourse. When the word "Taycan" is uttered these days, the world "Tesla" typically follows.

Remarkable.

Generally speaking, it's possible for niche players to steal mindshare from industry icons. Since 1992, Horacio Pagani has built his eponymous exotic nameplate into a brand that's talked about as a modern-day Ferrari or Lamborghini and in the estimation of some pundits, builds more compelling cars. Likewise Sweden's Koenigsegg, founded in 1994.

But those guys make bonkers supercars that sell in minuscule quantities and cost lots and lots of money. Tesla, meanwhile, isn't simply aiming to top vehicles such as the $100,000-plus Taycan with the $100,000-plus Model S trims; it also wants to take on Porsche's parent, the VW Group, in the mass-market.

In that, success has been mixed. The relatively new Model 3 endured a fraught debut, but it did help the company to sell nearly 250,000 vehicles in 2018, a record. Tesla now dominates the EV market worldwide (don't get too excited the worldwide EV market is tiny). Managing the situation is Tesla main concern. And that makes the reflexive Porsche comparos all the more remarkable. Because Porsche cares not one bit about the mass market. You settle for a Corolla. But you dream of a 911.

Or perhaps a Taycan.

That's Tesla. In 2009, a one-car company. In 2019, a worthy opponent for Porsche. Tesla has indeed come a long way, baby. And probably more than that.

Tesla is working on its own more efficient seat with temperature-control system – Electrek

Tesla is trying to improve efficiency wherever it can, and it is now apparently working on seat design as the electric automaker files for a patent on a new more efficient seat with temperature-control system.

Even with many new EVs launching in the past few years, Tesla remains the king of efficiency when it comes to long-range electric vehicles.

The automaker mainly achieved this through a very efficient powertrain, great aerodynamic performance, and weight management. However, Tesla is also looking at some more unusual ways to gain efficiency.

We recently reported on Tesla developing a new futuristic-looking electromagnetic wiper that they claim would be more energy-efficient than traditional wipers.

Now we learn that Tesla is also looking at a new seat design with an integrated temperature-control system that could be more power-efficient on top of cooling and heating the seats in a better way.

In a new patent application, Tesla describes the problems with current ventilated seats:

Attempts to provide air ventilation through the seat foam are typically insufficient to remove excess heat and provide a comfortable environment for the occupant. Further, conventional heating systems are bulky, occupy space in the seat which typically requires the seat to be thicker, and are inefficient in heating the seat as the heat typically must travel through multiple layers and heat regions of the seat that the occupant does not contact. Hence, there is a need for an improved temperature-control system for vehicle seats.

Tesla describes its own new design for a seat with a temperature-control system

The seat includes a seating portion and a backrest portion coupled to the seating portion. The seat also includes a temperature-control system associated with at least one of the seating portions and the backrest portions. The temperature-control system includes a base layer and an intermediate layer disposed adjacent to the base layer. The intermediate layer allows fluid to flow through it. The temperature-control system includes a cover layer disposed adjacent to the intermediate layer. The temperature-control system also includes at least one heating element disposed between the intermediate layer and the cover layer. The temperature-control system further includes a fluid pump to provide the flow of fluid through the intermediate layer.

Here are a few drawings from the patent application:

Tesla claims that its design would be cheap, low noise, and power-efficient:

The temperature-control system provides a low-cost, low-noise, power-efficient, and effective method for cooling and/or heating of the seat.

The automaker applied for the patent in February and it was made public last week.

As a reminder, companies sometimes apply for patents on technology that they never end up bringing to market.

Tesla Smart Summon isn’t for use in public places, America – CNET

Neat, but use it in good faith, people.

There are no self-driving cars for sale today. However, in the past week, Tesla began to roll out another step toward them as companies pursue the goal of full autonomy.

It's called Smart Summon -- a remote control-like function that allows owners to use their smart phones to direct their vehicles to back out of parking spaces and navigate very short distances to come pick them up. Smart Summon is part of the company's V10 software update on its Model 3, Model S and Model X electric cars.

But there's an important caveat to using this new system that a lot of people seem to be ignoring: Simply put, Smart Summon is NOT for use in public spaces. Tesla has clearly stated that's not what the darn thing is designed for.

Of course, as social media readily shows, Tesla owners are already attempting to push Smart Summon's intelligence and usage boundaries. These instances range from "Wow, close call" to "filing an insurance claim." There have been issues with parked cars, failing to determine where the pavement ends and the grass begins, and so on.

To be clear and fair, Tesla has underscored in its release that this function is not intended for activation in public spaces. I quote from the automaker's release notes: "Smart Summon is only intended for use in private parking lots and driveways."

This next part is important, guys: "You are still responsible for your car and must monitor it and its surroundings at all times within your line of sight." Tesla goes on to explain that the system may not detect all obstacles. The company calls the release a beta within its V10 software update. The notes go on to say that quick-moving pedestrians, cyclists and other cars are no friend to Smart Summon right now.

While one might argue that perhaps the system isn't ready for prime time, the release is explicit about what Tesla believes Smart Summon is good for right now. As shown below, it can work well under the right circumstances.

Yet, it's still a beta for a reason.

Features like Smart Summon are part of the allure of Tesla. Certainly, the tech is mighty advanced, and it's inherently cool to watch a car pick an owner up. We're not there yet, though. I've said it before, and I'll say it again: there are no self-driving cars for sale today. Tomorrow, there will still not be a single self-driving car for sale. Next year, save for any major breakthrough, there will not be a self-driving car on sale. The vast majority of people have no clue what the state of this sort of technology is, let alone how these new systems can be safely deployed.

But, when used properly, Smart Summon does seem to lay the groundwork for a more convenient future. Just remember that it's still in beta, and make sure to follow Tesla's directions, OK?

People Are Trying to Get Themselves Run Over by Their Own Teslas – ScienceAlert

Tesla's "Smart Summon" feature, which lets cars navigate themselves in parking lots, isn't even out of beta yet.

But Tesla owners are already using it in some mind-bogglingly stupid ways, Electrek reports.

In a video uploaded to YouTube account "Dirty Tesla", a Model 3 owner tries to walk in front of his vehicle while the Smart Summon feature is activated.

Luckily, the Model 3's cameras spot him the first time. On the second time around, the vehicle appears to almost roll over his toes while he approaches it from the car's blind spot.

In the release notes of Tesla's Version 10 update, which includes the Smart Summon feature, Tesla points out that "you are still responsible for your car and must monitor it and it's surroundings at all times within your line of sight because it may not detect all obstacles."

Drivers are already reporting minor fender benders as a result of Summon.

Twitter user David Guajardo even had somebody crash into his Model 3's bumper while he was Smart Summon-ing his vehicle in a parking lot. His insurance claim could turn into a real headache.

"Other party thinks that I was actually driving because I ran to my car before he got out," he wrote in a follow-up tweet.

Tesla Built-In Camera Captures the Moment ‘Very Angry’ Woman Keys Car in School Parking Lot – Newsweek

A built-in camera on a Tesla car captured the moment a "very angry" woman keyed the vehicle, according to reports.

The owner of the 2018 Tesla Model 3, Alan Tweedie, parked the car in the parking lot of Legacy High School in Broomfield, Colorado, while he watched his daughter's soccer game on Saturday morning, CBS4 reported. But when he arrived back at the car, he noticed that someone had keyed it, leaving a deep scratch along the driver's side.

"You can feel down to bare metal, and you can see it's scratched all the way completely through the paint," Tweedie told CBS4.

When he arrived home, Tweedie decided to view footage captured by the car's nine in-built, motion-activated cameras. And one video revealed the culprit.

"A woman distinctly came around with a key in her hand, dug it right in the side, walked it all the way up," Tweedie said. "Very angry, very purposeful, definitely trying to conceal it."

Tweedie said he doesn't know the woman and doesn't have any idea why she would have caused the damage.

Following the incident, he shared the video of the crime on Facebook, where it has been shared more than 100,000 times. Tweedie also reported the incident to Broomfield police, who are now investigating.

"It really speaks to the level of anger for a crime like this that so many people are willing to spread it and share the word and try to help us find itbecause nobody likes this," Tweedie said. "This is my car, but it could be yours next."

The car owner also had a message for the culprit. "Turn yourself in. Do the right thing. Be a better person than you were yesterday, when you were gouging the side of my car," he said.

A spokesperson for Broomfield police said it is often difficult to identify the individuals responsible for these types of crimes due to a lack of physical evidence. In this case, they estimated that the damage caused could total more than $2,000.

Police are urging anyone who has information about the woman in the video to come forward by calling 303-438-6400.

Teslathe electric car manufacture owned by billionaire Elon Muskreleased a software update in September 2018 for those vehicles with Autopilot hardware, enabling owners to access footage captured by cameras on their cars, which are normally used by the vehicle to collect information about its surroundings. The feature was intended for security purposes.

People Are Posting Videos of Close Calls with Tesla’s New Smart Summon Feature – Car and Driver

As if Tesla owners haven't made enough news with the EV company's Autopilot technology by leaving their hands off the wheel for minutes at a time, dozing off at highway speeds, ramming into emergency vehicles, and dying in accidents, the latest Tesla software update has already prompted videos of driverless cars nearly hitting other cars in parking lots.

Smart Summon is the newest beta feature that Tesla deploys on customers who willingly try out its unfinished software in ways the company could never get away with doing by itself. As part of Version 10.0, Smart Summon uses the Tesla app to start and drive a car at low speed to wherever the mobile device is located, using all the same sensors as Autopilot does to self-navigate, brake, steer, and accelerate. Over the weekend since it launched, Tesla owners have filmed their cars in parking lots with no one behind the wheel as if they were two-ton Roombas.

In some cases, it has worked out well. Just look at this man running repeatedly toward a moving Tesla during Summon.

How about this, in a storm? This is one of Tesla's suggestions for Smart Summon, the "perfect feature to use if you have an overflowing shopping cart, are dealing with a fussy child, or simply dont want to walk to your car through the rain."

It does seem to be really perfect.

Others say it's a "little spastic, but very exciting and fun!"

It's also fun to scare reasonable people for no reason.

In other cases, cars have backed into other cars . . .

Nearly clipped oncoming cars . . .

Or hit themselves.

Sometimes, Smart Summon can't figure out what to do.

But it doesn't matter. Perhaps Tesla, in its tweet on Thursday, explains why it would pass off something so unfinished and problematic as a product.

"Where have you parked your Tesla? But also, who cares?"

Tesla has reinvented the windshield wiper in new patent – Fox News

Tesla has made a lot of innovations over the years, but it may be about to tackle one the mostenduring automotive features: the windshield wiper.

In a patent application reported on by Road and Track, the automaker describes a very different way to power wipers. Instead of using simple recirculating electric motors, Teslas design mounts the wiper arms to electromagnetic guide rails that can operate more efficiently thanks to reduced friction and allows the wipers to cover more of the window by creating an altered sweep.

As with many patents, theres no indication as to when or if the design will make it into production, but the description mentions how increasingly complex glass shapes will require new solutions.

For instance, a prototype for Teslas upcoming Roadster sports car was equipped with a single large blade attached to a central pivot point via two arms that appear to provide it with a complex sweeping motion. However, it doesnt appear to be able to stow away, which would likely be a detriment to the vehicles aerodynamics, while the electromagnetic setup is designed to hide away under bodywork when not in use.

Teslas first big V3 Supercharger expansion is already happening in Canada – The Verge

Tesla unveiled the first V3 Supercharger at its Fremont, California factory just a few months ago, but the company is already making progress on the first concentrated buildout of the third generation of its fast-charging stations. Thats because 26 of the 46 charging stations currently being built along the transcontinental Trans-Canada Highway are V3 chargers, Tesla tells The Verge.

The new V3 chargers are capable of charging some Model 3s at rates of up to 250kW, making it possible to gain 75 miles of range in just five minutes. So far, the company has opened just a few other V3 Supercharging stations (including one in Las Vegas) beyond the original one at the Fremont plant.

The news comes as Tesla celebrates the seven-year anniversary of the first Supercharger stations this week. In the time since the company lit up those first fast chargers back in 2012, Tesla has gone on to build out one of the biggest networks of EV chargers in the world, with 14,081 Superchargers across 1,604 stations in 36 countries.

Tesla tells The Verge its seen more than 30 million charging sessions on its fast chargers since the first one was debuted in 2012. The company says its Supercharger network handles an average of 64,000 sessions per day, and doles out a total of about 2.25GWh of energy per day meaning users take on about 35kWh of energy during an average charging session.

Depending on the model, Teslas vehicles have battery capacities that range between 50kWh to 100kWh. While theres an obvious psychological appeal to recharging your car to completely full (just like youd refill a combustion engine cars gas tank all the way), the numbers Tesla provided imply that a great deal of customers only charge up enough to get where theyre going. Whether thats because they dont want to wait for a full charge, or because theyre happy enough to just grab a few extra miles before heading home to finish filling the battery over night, is unclear.

To put some of these numbers in some context, ChargePoint which controls one of the most widely distributed charging networks in the world has more than 1,476 fast chargers around the world and 100,700 chargers in total, according to its most recent monthly fact sheet. The California-based charging company says it has powered more than 62,879,120 charging sessions in the 12 years since it was founded.

But since the overwhelming majority of ChargePoints chargers are of the slower Level 2 variety, the companys network has delivered just 563,125MWh worth of energy over that time the same amount Superchargers put out in about 250 days. Based on those numbers, the average charging session over ChargePoints existence is closer to 9kWh.

Other comparisons are hard to make. When asked, EVgo was only able to share the number of charging stations on its network, and Volkswagens Electrify America said we dont provide usage data.

Tesla may have outpaced other charging networks across the last seven years, but like a number of the companys efforts, the original vision was even more grand. In the 2012 blog post announcing the first Superchargers, Tesla promised the ability to drive anywhere in the country on pure sunlight for free.

The company also said it wanted to outfit Superchargers with solar panels from SolarCity (which at the time was still a few years away from being acquired by Tesla), with the goal of generat[ing] more energy from the sun over the course of a year than is consumed by Tesla vehicles using the Supercharger, resulting in a slight net positive transfer of sunlight generated power back to the electricity grid.

I think this day will actually go down as being quite historic, I think at least on par with SpaceX docking with the Space Station earlier this year, CEO Elon Musk said at the 2012 unveiling.

Of course, free Supercharging eventually went away, only reappearing from time to time as an incentive for new buyers. Only about six of the stations were hooked up to a solar panel setup in 2017, and Tesla hasnt shown off a fully off-grid Supercharger setup. There are a few more stations with solar panels, but its clear Teslas still a long way off from fulfilling the picture Musk painted back in 2012.

Still, Teslas Superchargers tend to excel at the two things that matter most: reliable coverage and getting as much juice as possible in a short amount of time. Other charging networks (like Electrify America) are coming online, and that will certainly shift the balance in the years to come, especially since they tend to work with multiple makes and models. But by the time theyre built out, there will also be more electric cars on the road to charge. Maybe by then, stats like charging time and coverage maps will matter a little bit less than they do today.

U.S. Labor Judge Rules That Tesla Interfered With Union Organizing – Jalopnik

Photo: Spencer Platt (Getty Images)The Morning ShiftAll your daily car news in one convenient place. Isn't your time more important?

Tesla is ruled to have interfered with union organizing, Fiat Chrysler owes a lot of money over misleading sales figures, Maserati looks toward our electric and autonomous future, more lawsuits over the Trump administrations efforts to block California from setting emissions rules, and more on the General Motors strike. All of this and more in The Morning Shift for Monday, Sept. 30, 2019.

A labor judge ruled last week that Tesla broke labor law by interfering with union organization, Reuters reports, committing a series of violations of the National Labor Relations Act in the years 2017 and 2018.

With the ruling, the story said, Tesla must explain employees rights to them in a meeting that will require the attendance of CEO Elon Musk. Either Musk or his agent must tell employees that the National Labor Relations Board found Tesla to have broken the law, Reuters reports.

Reuters wrote that Tesla did not immediately respond to a request for comment last week, but that one of the violations cited was a tweet by Musk in May of last year. The post said Tesla workers could vote to unionize tmrw if they wanted, but theres always a but.

But why pay union dues & give up stock options for nothing? the post said. Our safety record is 2X better than when plant was UAW & everybody already gets healthcare. The judge ruled, according to Reuters, that the post threatened loss of stock options if they voted for unionization.

From Reuters:

In the past, the company has been plagued by safety complaints brought by workers, allegations that Tesla denies. Workers have said that long hours and pressure to deliver vehicles quickly takes a toll, and some have pushed for a union.

Soon, theyll be reminded of their rights in pushing for one.

Much like many of us when the monthly bills come around, Fiat Chrysler is about to be out of a lot of money. And much like were apt to fudge just how much we spent at the store last weekend when our partner asks, FCA owes the money because it was found to have misled investors over sales figures.

The money owed is a total of $40 million and itll resolve a probe by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, according to Reuters. The findings of the probe are pretty damning, and Reuters reports that FCA U.S. used a series of fraudulent moves from 2012 through 2016 to celebrate a streak of monthly sales growth, when it had actually ended in September 2013. Oh.

From the story:

In July 2016, the company revised more than five years of monthly U.S. vehicle sales figures to reflect a new reporting method, amid an investigation by federal authorities including the U.S. Justice Department.

The SEC said Fiat Chrysler put pressure on its business centers to increase sales, maintain the year-over-year sales streak, and hit internal sales targets, particularly on the last sales day of the month and as a result some employees at most of the Business Centers engaged in fake sales reporting.

Dealers were paid to report fake sales in a company database using cooperative marketing funds to disguise the payments, the SEC said, adding the database contained false vehicle sales entries, including false customer names and dates of sales.

So, yeah, maybe dont feel so bad about rounding down how much money you spent at the store last weekend. At least you havent been doing it for five years straight and broadcasting it to the world, right?

Maserati has some extra money sitting around courtesy of a recent Fiat Chrysler investment, and according to an emailed press release, it already knows where that money is going. The release said all new models will be made in Italy, and that their hybrid and electric elements will combine innovation and the high performance embedded in the brands DNA.

Maserati was vague on what that actually means, but the plan is focused around autonomy and electrification, the release said:

All new Maserati including the updated current models, will offer a range of autonomous driving capabilities, starting with Maserati Level 2 enhanced Highway Assist progressing to Level 3 with hands-off offering close to full autonomy, having the ability to maneuver in and out of lanes or bring the vehicle to a safe stop at the side of the road if the driver is unable to take control of the vehicle.

In 2020, the Company will embark on electrification and the Maserati Ghibli, produced in Turin, will be the first hybrid electric propulsion for the brand.

Next up will be a new Maserati utility vehicle, set to be built at Cassino and destined to play a leading role for the Brand thanks to its innovative technologies.

There will also be a paint shop allowing customers to watch their vehicle get colored, the release said. Itll be like going to Shipley Donuts and watching the food get made, except with cars.

Nine American environmental groups filed lawsuits against the U.S. Department of Transportation last week over its attempts to keep California from setting its own emissions rules and requirements for electric vehicles, Reuters reports. The Trump administration and California dont get along, you might remember, as one wants to increase emissions for no logical reason and the other wants to lower them for the good of the planet.

The groups add to the lawsuits over the emissions fight, as earlier this month, nearly half of the states in the U.S. sued over the intent to reverse state-set emissions standards. The department declined to comment to Reuters when asked last week, the story said.

From Reuters:

For decades, California has played a national role in influencing what Americans drive. The states vehicle emissions rules, more stringent than the Trump EPAs rules, are followed by a dozen other states that account for more than 40% of U.S. vehicle sales.

This week, Minnesota and New Mexico rebuffed the Trump administration and said they planned to adopt Californias tailpipe rules. [...]

The suit challenges the determination unveiled last week by the Transportation Department and its agency the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, that federal law preempts state and local regulation of vehicle fuel economy.

We need the environment to survive, so it might be smart of us to avoid killing the environment.

The United Auto Workers are on strike while negotiating a new union contract with General Motors, but, like all contract negotiations, agreeing on the end product is difficult. Not only do management and the workers have to agree, but all of the workers have to be on the same page about what they want. Thats hard, as different people have different priorities.

Automotive News has a breakdown of what things are like on the strike lines as far as contract feelings go right now, and mentioned that the longer workers are on strike, the more they have to weigh whether the strike was worth it in terms of the contract presented. (GM, if youll remember, cut off striking employees healthcare soon after the strike began, highlighting how risky it is to walk off of the job in attempts to get a better contract. The company later reinstated it.)

Heres some of how people feel, via Automotive News:

Getting contracts ratified already looked like a bigger challenge than usual going into this years talks, as years of multibillion-dollar profits by the Detroit 3 stoked eagerness to reverse past concessions. [...]

I dont think you ever get a deal that you want, but you have to get one that you can live with, Scott Ferguson, a paint repair worker at GMs Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly, said outside the plant Thursday, Sept. 26, the 11th day of the strike.

GMs first serious offer, as a top UAW official described the automakers Sept. 15 proposal, included $7 billion in U.S. investment, keeping some jobs at two assembly plants targeted for closure, annual wage increases or lump-sum payments, $8,000 ratification bonuses and improved profit sharing. Experts say that offer, which GM took the unusual step of publicizing in the hours before the strike, may have raised the bar for what it will take to earn a yes vote.

The story discusses the contract in terms of worker wants and the situations surrounding negotiations, such as the UAW corruption, plans for plant closures, and giving temporary workers a path to full-time employment. It can be read in full here.

On Sept. 30, 1929, Fritz von Opel made the first flight in a rocket-propelled airplane in Frankfurt, Germany, according to a New York Times obituary upon his death in 1971. If that name sounds familiar, its because his grandfather founded Opel.

From the story:

He flew 1 miles in as many minutes at an altitude averaging 49 feet. The plane was, wrecked in landing, but he escaped unhurt.

In an article in The New York Times after the flight, he wrote:

It is marvelous to fly like this, driven entirely by fire gases which escape from the, nozzle at a speed of about 5,000 miles an hour. When we are able to make full use of this gas we shall be able to fly around the world under five hours.

If only flying around the world in less than five hours was the norm.

How much longer does this last? Where does it go next?

Tesla rolled out its Smart Summon feature, and it’s not going well – Driving

Tesla rolled out its Version 10 software update this past weekend, a suite which includes, among other new tricks, the long-awaited Smart Summon feature.

The feature seems like one small step for the California automaker, but its one giant leap for car-kind: Smart Summon is the first piece of tech to apparently allowing a car to drive to its owner with nobody at the wheel.

Sure, its only meant for short distances, and Teslas been telling owners they need to have a clear line of sight to the car to use it, but its still pretty neat.

The car will drive toward the owner, as long as they have their finger on a button on an app; lifting their thumb stops the car if it has a problem.

From the looks of Teslas video, it seems pretty cool, and looks like it works well. However, when owners try to make it work themselves, it sometimes doesnt go so well after all.

The fine print on the update does note You are still responsible for your car andmust monitor it and its surroundings at all times.

Plus now the automakers underscoring that the feature is intended for use in private parking lots and driveways, not on anything resembling a public road. Doubt thatll stop some owners from using it that way, though.

Hopefully Tesla can get some of these self-navigation details ironed out quickly, so owners wont have to walk 15 meters to their parked car ever again.

Ride Along In The World’s Quickest Tesla – InsideEVs

If you're a huge fan of mind-blowing acceleration and Tesla vehicles, then it makes sense that you would be excited to finally get a ride in a Model S. And not just any Model S, but the "world's fastest." That was recently the case forChristian McMaster. Lucky for us, he not only filmed his dream ride-along, but also placed the experience in a longer clip to add context and enhance the story.

When we click on the video at the top of the page, we learnMcMaster is recording tons of fast cars atDrag Week 2019. He makes it clear just how much he loves the racing scene and this event in particular. He shares some footage of that action and lets us know we can find a lot more on the 1320video YouTube channel.

The centerpiece of this video, though, happens inside the cabin of a very quick Tesla Model S. Its interior stripped out for added lightness and sporting a set of racing chairs, this very vehicle recentlybroke the NEDRA (National Electric Drag Racing Association) record time for production electric vehicles (10.766 seconds at 122.3 miles per hour as of his writing).

Despite having spent time in some very quick cars in the past,McMaster is not disappointed by the gut-punch of the P100D at launch. If you haven't clicked that play button yet, what are you waiting for? Check it out!

I attended Drag Week 2019 to make daily videos for 1320Video. I was filming and editing my face off the whole week and managed to fit in a bit of my own filming to bring you guys this video! I take a ride in George's Tesla (during the week he broke the world record for the quickest Tesla quarter mile pass. Someone came forward and said they have it but it's only 0.00X seconds faster so idk who knows.) You can't really modify these things, so there's just a ton of weight reduction and it was A FREAKING BLAST. I'm excited to bring you guys better vlogs in the future!

The Fifth Amendment administration – Opinion – The Register-Guard

WednesdaySep25,2019at12:01AM

The Trump Administration increasingly appears as the Fifth Amendment administration. Despite a statutory obligation to turn over an intelligence whistleblower report to the Congressional Intelligence Committees, it refuses to do so. And despite a statutory obligation to turn over the president's tax returns to the House Ways and Means Committee, it refuses to do so.

President Trump refused Special Counsel Robert Muller's request for an interview, instead sending responses to his questionnaire that omitted many answers. His administration has blocked Congressional subpoenas for numerous administration officials and others, like Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross, who refuse to comply with subpoenas.

Why the obstruction? Because the administration has things to hide. As the Fifth Amendment formula goes: "I refuse to answer on the grounds that it might tend to incriminate me." This is how Trump and his administration increasingly appear. But the Fifth Amendment gives this right only to an individual who may not "be compelled in any criminal case to be a witness against himself." But they are an administration, not criminal defendants (not yet, anyway). Our representatives, or the public, have every right to answers.

Council approves gun theft reporting ordinance after tweak – Scottsbluff Star Herald

The Lincoln City Council on Monday unanimously approved an ordinance requiring gun owners to report thefts of their weapons to police.

That vote came after an amendment was approved removing language that would require owners to include the time, place and manner of the theft.

At least one defense attorney had said including that language could wind up requiring gun owners to incriminate themselves if they hadn't properly secured their weapon, which would violate the Constitution's Fifth Amendment.

Council Chair Jane Raybould had introduced the reporting proposal, which requires people to notify police within 48 hours of discovering their gun had been stolen.

The two-day grace period is geared toward ensuring police investigators get notified when video surveillance recordings or physical evidence is still generally available, Raybould said.

Anyone found to have violated the ordinance would face up to six months in jail and a $500 fine.

Her ordinance draws from the recommendations of Lincoln's Child Access to Firearms/Safe Storage Task Force, which pointed to a similar mandatory reporting law in Seattle.

Raybould on Monday noted that more than 60 firearms were stolen from vehicles in Lincoln in 2017 and 2018.

She said that while she understands and supports the Second Amendment guaranteeing people's right to own firearms, "with that right comes additional responsibilities."

Councilman Roy Christensen, who had opposed the ordinance and criticized its approach as making crime victims criminals, chose to support it after the amendment was approved.

Christensen said he consulted with several attorneys about the ordinance and said that with the language requiring divulging circumstances removed, "there does not appear to be any conflict easily identified with the state Constitution."

Christensen has introduced his own gun ordinance, requiring firearms left in vehicles to be locked up.

He has delayed consideration of his proposal until later in October to work out problems with the ordinance's wording.

Ridiculous: Former prosecutor laughs off Giulianis latest defense of Trump and advises him to lawyer up – AlterNet

Appearing on MSNBC early on Sunday morning, former prosecutor Glenn Kirschner laughed off Rudy Giulianis latest defense of Donald Trumps attempt to blackmail Ukraine for dirt on former Vice President Joe Biden, calling his reasoning ridiculous and warning the former New York City mayor he better consider pleading the 5th Amendment if he is called before Congress.

Referring to Giulianis appearance on Fox News on Saturday night where the former New York mayor claimed the president had a constitutional duty to pursue claims of criminality in the case of Biden, Kirschner all but rolled his eyes.

I have never heard an argument before that if the president hadnt committed this crime, he would have committed a crime, Kirschner explained to laughter.

Think about how ridiculous that reasoning is, he continued. Let me tell you this, if Rudy Giuliani has any sort of lingering law abidingness or legal reasoning left in his head, when he hits the Congressional witness stand he sure better invoke his Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination, which I predict any lawyer he retains will advise him to do because he is in hot water.

Easley lawyer accused of ethical violations that targeted veterans and bilked investors – Greenville News

Easley lawyer Candy Kern-Fullercommitted egregious ethical violationsas the "central banker" of ascheme involving the illegal sale of military benefits, according to an attorney for the state of Arizona and a retired law professor at the University of South Carolina.

NEW: Easley attorney agrees to end 'civil conspiracy' of buying and selling veterans' benefits

The 51-year-old founder of Upstate Law Group and her cohorts profited by defrauding financially distressed veterans and unwitting investorsacross the country, her accusers say.

As part of a continuing investigation, The Greenville News and Anderson Independent Mail obtained and revieweda1,139-page transcript that was filed last week from an August hearing in Phoenix. Kern-Fuller invoked her Fifth Amendment right to remain silent 164 times during the hearing before the Arizona Corporation Commission.

"Facts show that she participated in illegal activity that was so egregious it could lead a reasonable person to conclude she operated or managed a criminal enterprise," retired professor John Freeman stated in a report submitted to the commission.

The Greenville Newscalled Kern-Fuller twice on Thursday and sent an email seeking comment. She did not respond.

Freeman, who taughtcorporate law, securities lawand legal ethics for more than 30 years, testified as an expert witness during the six-day hearing.

The Arizona Corporation Commissionoversees corporations, securities and utilities in Arizona. The proceedings wererelated to enforcement actionsthat the commission is considering against Kern-Fuller, her firm, three other individuals and two companies that allegedly sold $371,191 in military benefits to Arizona investors in 2017.

The commission seeks a cease-and-desist orderandunspecified restitution.

According to investigators, the arrangements matched veterans seeking lump-sum payments with investors seeking safe returns.Kern-Fuller, whom Freeman described as the "central banker,"and others coordinating the transactions collected fees and commissions. It's not clear how much they earned.

Candy Kern-Fuller.(Photo: File photo)

Freeman said at the hearing that Kern-Fuller didn't acknowledgeconflicts of interest stemming from her involvement withinvestors and veterans. He also said that she provided investors with inadequate risk disclosures thathe described as "gibberish" and a "travesty."

Jamie Burgess, a staff attorney for the commission's securities division, saidKern-Fuller failed to let investors know that thecompanies involved in thetransactions had been barred from doing businessin eight states. She also neglected to mention that it is illegal to buy and sell veterans' disability benefits and pensions, he said.

"The investment documents failed to disclose this is the elephant in the room that federal law prohibits these transactions," Burgess said.

And the paperwork provided to investors was "highly deceptive, misleadingand fraudulent," Burgess said.

Kern-Fuller's attorneyRobert Zelmssaid at the hearing, "This is not a legal malpractice case; this isnot an ethics case... Upstate Law Group, Candy Kern-Fuller did not create these products and transactions that are in question; they did not promote them; they did not market them; they did not sell them. They were involved in the preparation of the closing documents."

An expert witness for Kern-Fuller, William Higgins an attorney whoserveson professional-responsibility and ethics-advisory committees for the South Carolina Bar said, "I fear that Professor Freeman and his report was frankly designed to just make Ms. Kern-Fuller and Upstate Law Group look bad."

A ruling in the case is expected to come next year.

Burgess said Kern-Fuller and her law firm are part of a larger enterprise that includes Arkansas businessman Andrew Gamber and at least two other companies.

In April, the Arizona Corporation Commission issued a cease-and-desist orderthat requires Gamber, 39, BAIC Inc. and SoBell Corp. to repay nearly $2.7 million from 53 transactions involving military benefits completed from 2013 to 2015 in the state.

Dozens of the transactions fell apart when veterans stopped making monthly payments from their military pensionsas arranged.

The involvement of veterans was part of what attracted many investors in the first place, records show.

In her testimony, investor Carolyn Blythe Strong said her father was in the U.S. Coast Guard and served during World War II.

"And so, for me, I have a really soft spot in my heart for veterans... and helping them, particularly with their retirement, was a plus to me," she said.

Other investors who lost money included a retired nurse who was forced to take a minimum-wagejob and a retired Arizona state judge.

"Instead of modest, steady, safe retirement income, the investors got wreckage," Burgess said. "They have lost large portions of their life savings."

- Gabe Cavallaro, Mike Ellis,Ariel Gilreath,Conor Hughes,Nikie Mayo, Anna Mitchell and Haley Walters contributed to this report.

Coming soon:A 12-month investigation by The Greenville News details through court documents and exclusive interviews how investment brokers specifically targeted often-vulnerable veterans by offering cash in exchange for military benefits, often leaving both the veterans and investors in worse financial straits.

Murder trial still in upheaval over more documents not turned over to defense – Johnson City Press (subscription)

Young, 49, is on trial this week in the shooting death of 45-year-old Jose Mijares on Feb. 13, 2016.

Defense attorneys Rick and Matthew Spivey learned during testimony Wednesday that not only was a bullet recovered from a 2014 incident in which Young claimed Mijares fired a gun at him, but that the bullet was destroyed in 2015 after no charges were filed.

The night that incident occurred, Mijares told police he didnt have a weapon something his widow, Juana Mijares also testified to and it was at that point Young said he began carrying his own handgun more often because he was afraid of his neighbor.

Matthew Spivey renewed, once again, a motion to dismiss the murder charge against Young.

This renewed motion based on not only cumulative impact of some of the actions in this trial that weve moved for a mistrial on, but also on information that surfaced Wednesday, including photographs of Youngs truck that he claimed had been shot at.

The first time we ever saw those photographs was about an hour ago, and I noticed photographs on the witness podium and they were of Mr. Youngs truck, Matthew Spivey said. State counsel responded the reason they were not produced was because they were rebuttal. I moved for a sanction against the state. Those are actually veryexculpatory in nature and support Mr. Youngs statements to the police throughout the process. In further support of that ... there are pages missing from those photographs .... it is a multi-dated report.

The shooting

Police responded to the corner of North Roan and Lambeth on Feb. 13, 2016, after Mijares teenage son waved down a passing motorist for help. The teen said he had witnessed Young shoot his father.

The youth told police he and his father were on their way for coffee at a nearby market when a green vehicle pulled out from Youngs driveway and pulled up close to his fathers vehicle as they drove from their residence on Lambeth Court toward North Roan. At some point, the green vehicle, later determined to be driven by Young, went around Mijares and pulled in front of him.

When both vehicles stopped at the stop sign at Lambeth Drive and North Roan, Jose Mijares got out of the vehicle and approached the car ahead of them. The teen said his father was going to talk to the driver about why he had cut in front of them.

The teenager told police he didnt hear his father say anything but saw the man in the green truck shoot his father. Mijares was shot in the chest and later died from his injury.

Mijares and his son Jesus, now 18, were headed to a convenience store for gas and coffee on a bitterly cold winter morning. The young Mijares testified that a green truck, known to him to belong to Young, came barreling up behind their SUV and cut in front of them and stopped at the intersection of Lambeth Drive and North Roan Street.

Youngs testimony

Young testified that he had pulled out behind Mijares that February morning and it appeared Mijares was turning left off of Lambeth Drive, so Young went around him. At the stop sign of Lambeth and North Roan Street, Mijares got out of his vehicle and began to approach Young.

Young, who said hed been afraid of Mijares since the 2014 gunfire incident, said he rolled down his window, grabbed his handgun and yelled several times for Mijares to stop. He said he even warned Mijares he had a gun and would shoot.

Young said that after Mijares swatted at him through the open window, Young leaned back and fired one shot.

Motion to dismiss

The cumulative impact of what the state has done in the case is violated due process of the United States Constitutions Fifth Amendment that applies to the state of Tennessee through the Fourteenth Amendment, Matthew Spivey.I just dont understand whats going on in this case. Its something new with every witness.

He had asked for a dismissal on Tuesday afterlead investigator Joe Jaynes took the stand. As he was answering questions from Assistant District Attorney Robin Ray, she asked if he had contact with Young at the police department.

Jaynes answer sent the Spiveys to their feet to object. Rice sent the jury out, and for about two hours court personnel worked on technical issues retrieving the exchange between Jaynes and Ray. The answer he started giving indicated he went into an interview room where Young was and read the Miranda rights to him and attempted to talk to Young.

That, the Spiveys argued, was a violation of Youngs Fifth Amendment right to remain silent something the jury is not entitled to know unless Young takes the stand. The defense argued the state intentionally elicited the testimony from Jaynes to taint the jury because Young did not give a statement. Ray said she asked the question to establish why Jaynes was not interviewing other witnesses at the time.

Whatever the reason was, Rice said it was absolutely inappropriate for the jury to hear that testimony.

The judge has not ruled on this most recent revelation of documents the defense just received. She said she would review all the arguments from the defense and state and research case law on which to base her ruling on the defense motion to dismiss.

There could still be more rebuttal testimony Thursday, but the case will likely land in the hands of the jury for deliberation. If convicted of first-degree murder, Young faces life in prison. He remains free on a $100,000 bond while the case is pending.
