Tata Nano could have been a success, if only… – BusinessLine

Tata Motors home-grown car, Nano, was not doomed to be a failure, but fate took it in the other direction.

Dr V Sumantran, who was the CEO of Tata Motors car business between 2001 and 2005 during which period he oversaw the development of the Nano, says he received rave reviews from European and American car designers, who marvelled at the product.

Speaking on Auto Industry Present and Future Tense at the Triplicane Cultural Academy on Sunday, Dr Sumantran observed that things could have been different but for one decision.

When Tata Motors was planning for the Nano, the company owned 1,200 acres of land near Dharwad, Karnataka, on the Golden Quadrilateral highway. The company could have produced the Nano there, as there was no need to acquire land for the factory.

But the company wanted a bigger area and it decided to go to Singur, West Bengal and you all know what happened he said. Trinamool Congress leader, Mamata Banerjee, who was then in the Opposition, protested against the state government acquiring land for the project, and eventually, the project had to be shifted out of the state.

This caused a delay of a year and the cars then had to be produced in a temporary makeshift plant in Uttaranchal. Within a month of starting production (because the production had to be hurried to make up for the lost time) three cars caught fire. All this was unnecessary, Sumantran said.

Asked if it could be revived, he said that the learnings from the Nano were already being applied elsewhere, such as in the Renault Kwid.

It was my pet project, I was passionate about it, said Sumantran ruefully over the fate of the car.

A regular mid-sized vehicle weighs about 1,300 kg which means, it takes that mass to transport a 65 kg human being. The Nano, on the other hand, weighed only 625 kg.

Earlier in his speech, Sumantran pointed out that even if a fourth of the two-wheelers and buses produced by the year 2025 were electric, it would call for a battery production capacity of 30-40 GWhr, which would call for an investment of Rs 30,000 crore to Rs 40,000 crore.

He said the vast improvements achieved in the emission and safety standards of cars produced in the country meant that India-made cars were acceptable in all parts of the world which opens up a huge export market.

Competing against the Chinese is a major challenge, he said. Wherever we go, we find extremely aggressive and subsidised Chinese products. Yet, wherever there is a high amount of engineering required and the scale is not very big, India can take on China, he said.

On driverless vehicles, Sumantran observed that the vehicles were extremely complex and had come a long way since they were conceived, but there was still a long way to go before they became completely acceptable.

Get your tickets now for Neil Gaiman in Conversation with N. K. Jemisin at Bard – Hudson Valley One

When N. K. Jemisins writings started getting nominated for Hugo and Nebula Awards circa 2010, she became one of the historically underrepresented black female speculative fiction authors singled out for verbal attack by a small cadre of World Science Fiction Society voters nostalgic for the days when only white male nominees were winning those prizes. Alleging a conspiracy to confer awards based on affirmative action, some disappointed alt-right prize-seekers tried for five years running to stack the Hugo ballot in favor of the militaristic space-opera style that they preferred. Their efforts backfired spectacularly, with No Award beating their nominees in nearly all categories; and the most overtly racist and misogynistic of their leaders had his WSFS membership revoked after calling Jemisin an ignorant half-savage on social media.

Jemisins revenge at the hands of more forward-thinking science fiction authors and editors must have been sweet: The Fifth Season, the first volume of her epic-scale Broken Earth trilogy, won the Best Novel Hugo in 2016. The second volume, The Obelisk Gate, took the award in 2017, as did the third volume, The Stone Sky, in 2018. It was the first and only time that an author has won the Best Novel award three years in a row, or for all the installments of a series. And those votes werent simply payback to some toxic reactionaries. The Stone Sky also copped a Nebula Award, widely regarded as the more literary annual high-profile science fiction prize (as opposed to the Hugos being seen as a popularity contest). Jemisins work is lauded by her peers at least as much for its elegant writing and powerful worldbuilding as for its thought-provoking treatment of politically and sociologically relevant issues such as genocide and climate change.

In her acceptance speech for her third Hugo, Jemisin said of the naysayers who suggest that I do not belong on this stage, that people like me cannot possibly have earned such an honor, that when they win it its meritocracy but when we win it its identity politics I get to smile at those people, and lift a massive, shining, rocket-shaped middle finger [the Hugo trophy] in their direction. But she also cited the little voice inside me that constantly, still, whispers that I should just keep my head down and shut up and let the real writers talk. That nagging symptom of impostor syndrome is an affliction shared by another multi-Hugo-winning author, Neil Gaiman, who will welcome Jemisin to the stage of the Sosnoff Theater in the Richard B. Fisher Center for the Performing Arts on the Bard College campus on Saturday, May 2 at 7:30 p.m.

This event marks a welcome resumption of the always-stimulating In Conversation With series that Gaiman began hosting when he joined the Bard arts faculty in 2014. For a while there was one each spring and fall semester, featuring such eminent artist guests as Laurie Anderson, Art Spiegelman, Armistead Maupin and Audrey Niffenegger and drawing attendees from far and wide. But sadly, for the past couple of years, the Conversations have been on hiatus. Gaiman has been spending most of his time in his native England, performing the all-consuming duties of showrunner on the Amazon Prime Video dramatization of Good Omens, the novel he and the late Terry Pratchett co-wrote in 1990 about a demon and an angel who join forces to avert the impending Apocalypse because theyve grown fond of living among humans.

Good Omens is done now; it was well-received on both sides of the Pond, with the chemistry between David Tennant and Michael Sheen in the lead roles drawing especial praise. At this writing, Gaiman is in Australia where his wife, singer/songwriter/musician Amanda Palmer, is wrapping up a concert tour. Hell soon be back at his home base in Woodstock, resuming his teaching responsibilities at Bard, and the Conversations are back on. Between the affable host and his stellar choice of guest, this live event promises fans of speculative fiction a most enjoyable evening of freewheeling talk. Jemisin has a brand-new novel, The City We Became, coming out in March, but shell be available to sign other works in the lobby following the program, courtesy of Oblong Books.

Tickets to Neil Gaiman in Conversation with N. K. Jemisin cost $25 general admission, $5 for Bard undergrads and can be obtained by calling the Fisher Center box office at (845) 758-7900 or visiting http://fishercenter.bard.edu. May 2 may seem a long way off, but this show should sell out quickly, so act now.

Popular conservative pundit Ben Shapiro was an editor at Breitbart from 2012 to 2016. The controversial site also served as a platform for right-wing lightning rod Milo Yiannopoulos, once a Breitbart senior editor.

Breitbart has written extensively about "free speech on college campuses" and seems to thrive on controversy related to its allegations of left-wing bias at universities. In 2017, a talk at the University of California, Berkeley by Yiannopouloswas canceled due to massive protests. Yiannopoulos resigned from Breitbart shortly after, following the surfacing of a video in which he said relationships between younger boys and older men can be hugely positive experiences."

‘The playbook is the American alt-right’: Bolsonaristas follow familiar extremist tactics – The Guardian

When Jair Bolsonaros culture secretary published an official video paraphrasing Nazi propaganda minister Joseph Goebbels, it wasnt just Brazilians who were stunned. The video, in which Roberto Alvim called for a rebirth of art and culture in Brazil while Adolf Hitlers favourite Wagner opera played in the background, sent shockwaves around the world.

Alvim was sacked within hours, as Brazilians asked: was this an aberration, a one-off, or even a communist trick? And what did it say about the far right presidents communications masterplan?

Analysts said the use of such extremist tactics is typical of the brinksmanship, trolling and meme tactics used by the US alt-right who are often referenced by powerful members of Bolsonaros government.

The term alt-right was popularised by white supremacist Richard Spencer and has been linked to Stephen Miller, a white nationalist and senior adviser to Donald Trump who has himself benefited from far-right support and at times nodded to it.

Pushing the limits and goading liberals are classic alt-right tactics, said Rodrigo Nunes, a political philosophy professor at Rio de Janeiros Pontifical Catholic University.

This is done in the US by people on the fringes of the public debate, and here it is done by people in the government, Nunes said. Sending messages to people in the most extreme fringes of the far right.

Alvim denied knowing he had quoted Goebbels. Brazilian media reported that he was well aware that he was echoing Hitlers propaganda minister and even joked he would be called a Nazi.

The playbook is the American alt-right, Nunes said. In that sense, Brazil is the first alt-right government in the world.

Its not hard to find other such rightwing dog-whistle messages around Bolsonaros government.

His congressman son, Eduardo, and special adviser of international affairs Felipe Martins both have Twitter profile pictures which use a sci-fi, collage aesthetic called vaporwave or fashwave associated with the alt-right.

Martins profile quotes Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night the Dylan Thomas poem quoted in the manifesto of far-right terrorist Brenton Tarrant, accused of killing 51 people in the Christchurch mosque attacks.

These are common tropes, said Alexandra Minna Stern, a professor in the American Culture department at the University of Michigan and author of Proud Boys and the White Ethnostate. In turn, the US alt-right is interested in Brazil because they like Jair Bolsonaro and the way he and his supporters have used social media, she said.

Another alt-right favourite is the Latin phrase deus vult (God wills it) a Crusader slogan which has often been used by figures in the alt-right as well as Alvim and foreign minister Ernesto Arajo.

The Bolsonaros also use offensive statements to distract media attention from damaging scandals. In the past month alone, the president told a reporter he looked terribly like a homosexual as explosive details about a money laundering inquiry into his senator son Flvio swirled. Last week, he said on Facebook live that Indigenous people are increasingly becoming human beings just like us.

Thats part of the spectacle, like the shock and awe going on in the US, said Stern.

Like Trump, leading Bolsonaristas are good at plausible deniability making an extreme comment, then withdrawing it or claiming it was misconstrued.

Eduardo Bolsonaro and finance minister Paulo Guedes have both said Brazil could reintroduce notoriously repressive legislation from Brazils military dictatorship if street protests like those in Chile were to erupt. Both later backed off, but the subject had entered the national conversation.

And while Alvims conservative art competition has been suspended, many Bolsonaristas still believe that Brazilian culture is decadent, infested with leftist ideals, and in need of a conservative transformation.

Its back to Nazi ideas of what is degenerate art, how young families are being corrupted, Stern said. [The idea] is out there and its entering the discourse.

Spoken Word muddies the issue of consent – Chicago Reader

Playwright and MPAACT founding member Shepsu Aakhu was inspired to write this campus sexual assault drama by a conversation initiated by one of his two college-aged sons, "two Black males living a life completely free from my daily protection." The fear he has on behalf of his family is palpable and, regrettably, well-sourcedconversations about the prevalence of misogyny and assault on universities often sidestep the reality that young Black men in this country still live under an unjust cloud of suspicion. And yet, as justified as Aakhu's anxiety is, the politics and attitudes behind Spoken Word are virtually indistinguishable from those found on men's rights forum comment sections, amounting to a panicked screed against the very idea of verbal consent.

If that reads as loaded or unfair, consider the plot here: Izzy (Jelani Pitcher) and Paris (Nadia Pillay), two young adultskids, reallyhave a clumsy but ultimately consensual (if nonverbal) attempt at sex. Misinterpreting her roommate's caginess about that night, a white SJW caricature (seemingly inked by alt-right favorite Ben Garrison) puts Izzy on social media blast, making him a pariah on campus.

After days of silence, Parishand in hand with Izzynotifies the college administration that no assault occurred, but a cartoonishly villainous administrator admonishes them both and insists the young man face consequences despite the supposed victim clearly stating no wrongdoing occuredbecause the word "yes," this play's other antagonist, wasn't spoken. Director Lauren "LL" Lundy's production features some strong performances, particularly by Veronda G. Carey as a dean (who sees no conflict of interest in sitting on the board overseeing her son's case), but the script's improbabilities cast an ugly pall over the whole affair.v

Its okay to be white posters put up in Bristol city centre – The Independent

A number of posters with the phrase "it's okay to be white" have appeared around Bristol city centre since Monday.

The posters, which feature no other messaging or branding, have been criticised on social media and by residents.

Students from the University of Bristol have taken to Twitter to express their anger. One said: These posters have been put up on campus. My university, ladies and gentlemen.

Sharing the full story, not just the headlines

A University of Bristol spokesperson toldThe Independentthey were asking people to take them down and contact security services if seen on university premises, although said currently they are only aware of those in the wider city.

A lecturer in criminology from the University, Dr Victoria Canningtold The Independent that she first saw one of the messages on a lamppost in Park Street in central Bristol on Tuesday morning. She walks the route regularly and hadnt seen it before.

I really dont want to give it airtime but this is obviously following on from things like the appearance of Laurence Fox on Question Time, there is a correlation, she says. Dr Canning says she heard other posters were elsewhere but were removed quickly by students.

The its okay to be white messaging originated on internet forum 4/Chan in 2017 and was conceived as a US poster campaign to create a left-wing media backlash in response to a harmless message.

The posters appeared at universities across America, including the University of California, University of Washington and University of Regina in Canada.

They were widely supported by neo-Nazi and white supremacist groups, as well as alt-right figures including former Klu Klax Klan grand wizard David Duke.

The sightings in Bristol are the first time they have appeared in England, after a brief spate in Scotland: in Dundee in September 2019 and then Perth in December. Police Scotland confirmed they were looking into the matter.Scotland's deputy first minister John Swinney condemned them.

Dr Canning says the posters need to be criticised even if outrage does play directly into the hands of the creators.

She says: To try and orchestrate outrage to then suppress it is a form of social silencing the very people who point the finger and say you are hysterical are the ones creating these mechanisms to silence us because no one wants to speak out against them.

She also disagrees with the idea that the slogan is a harmless message. This is only a harmless message if we choose to ignore structural inequalities. We dont live in an era of equality.

There has to be a recognition by society that although white working classes can experience problems, such as the impact of austerity, these are largely economic problems. For non-white people they experience additional problems of criminalisation and racism, like stop and search.

Saying that is not to say that [white people] dont experience social harms but there are specific things that white people do not experience, she says.

Dr Canning says it concerns her that the white victim construct - which was previously restricted to far-right narratives - is becoming more widely accepted by disillusioned people.

In times of austerity we arent looking up for the people causing us problems but looking around us and those fractures grow.

I remember years ago there were protests at the suggestion Nick Griffin would go on Question Time as a representative of the BNP. Things have shifted since then, she adds.

Dr Canning says it is also interesting that they have chosen to post them in Bristol. It is interesting that someone has chosen to put it up in Bristol which is generally seen as a liberal, left-leaning city, she says.

The slogan was also used on t-shirts sold by British far-right political commentator Milo Yiannopoulos, and has been tied to the All Lives Matter campaign.

Trump supporting congressman bizarrely claims AOC wants to ‘force you to eat nothing but kale and quinoa’ – indy100

Staunch Trump supporter, alt-right sympathiser and GOP congressman Matt Gaetzfound himself a cosy spot in his happy place: Fox News.

And because middle-aged Republican men are literally obsessed with everything AOC(as are we, tbf) that was the topic of conversation. Specifically, her comments last week that the Democratic party is a "center or center-conservative party."

In response, Gaetzcalled her "a socialist" (he also called her "Alex" which we suppose is better than when he kept calling her "attractive"). The actual dictionary definition of socialism relates to the means of production being controlled by a collective (such as the government) as opposed to individuals. But Gaetz had an altogether different definition which we've never heard of, and are pretty sure would be pretty baffling to Marx too.

She wants to fundamentally change everything, where unless the government is forcing you to eat nothing but kale and quinoa while you're riding around on your non-gender specific unicorn to your next Pocahontas rain dance, you're just not woke enough.

The clip has been widely circulated on Twitter overnight after it was posted yesterday by the actual show it was aired on. Somehow they must have thought it made them look good...

Delightfully, it appears to have backfired.

Gaetz might like to know that actually quinoa is now problematic and unicorns are genderless anyway. Next time maybe he could find a more accurate cliche.

ACE on track for export boost thanks to aerospace and automotive orders – PES Media

Advanced Chemical Etching (ACE)s prototype and low volume parts are in demand from customers in more than 15 countries.

Employing 60 people at its Hortonwood site, the companys ability to etch in aluminium and titanium has seen it play a major role in the development of heating elements for ice protection on aircraft and high-performance interconnectors and bipolar plates commonly used in automotive battery packs and fuel cells respectively.

These are all identified as major growth areas for the business, which is set to celebrate its 20th birthday in 2020.

The parts we produce are very complex and there are not many firms with our capacity or capability, explained Chris Ball, executive director at ACE.

Our different etching processes have been developed to deliver the tightest of tolerances and over 600,000 has been invested in the last year in new equipment to ensure we can produce up to 2,000 sheets per day a massive increase on this time last year.

He continued: Automotive and aerospace are committed to reducing emissions and our technology lends itself to taking weight out of the equation, whether that is melting ice or supporting new battery technology.

Were already working on a number of projects that should come to fruition this year and have the potential to change the way cars, drones, space vehicles and aircraft are powered.

ACE, which has been supported by the Department for International Trade (DIT) with reviews of its website and agent network to help maximise sales, specialises in the development of prototype components, pre-production and volume fulfilment to customers in aerospace, automotive, electronics, medical, telecoms and renewables.

The scope of its activities is far and wide and can include anything from safety critical components for aircraft and F1 cars to meshes and electronic connectors and even frames for designer glasses.

All parts are developed and manufactured at its main site in Telford or at the companys dedicated sister business, ACE Forming Limited, in Kingswinford.

The latest production machinery, a dedicated laboratory and state-of-the-art measuring capability ensures it works to the most exacting tolerances and can manufacture components in materials, such as stainless steel, nickel alloys, copper, beryllium copper, phosphor bronze, brass and, thanks to groundbreaking new processes, aluminium, molybdenum, titanium, nitinol and elgiloy.

Ian Whateley, managing director, continued: 2020 is going to be a big year for our business and weve started by launching a new brand and website.

Export is also a major target and we have set about increasing our number of agents in key territories, including Germany, the Netherlands and Asia. Supporting this will be the launch of international websites with their own international domains.

ACE spent 600,000 in 2019 on upgrading its facility in Telford and has just pressed the button on a further 250,000 investment to help it continue to win new work.

Pre and post cleaning machines have been installed to make the company quicker and new auto loaders have been added on to the lines to aid a move to lights-out manufacturing in some parts of production.

Able Aerospace Expands Repair, Overhaul Capabilities | Business Aviation News – Aviation International News

Following the opening of a 60,000-sq-ft facility expansion last year, Able Aerospace Services has added new machinery that will double the bandwidth of its machining department and increase its business opportunities, the Textron Aviation subsidiary announced yesterday. Ables upgrades include a machining center, a new next-generation lathe and mill, and enhanced grinding capabilities.

These machines add significant capacity to our repair pipeline, said Able general manager Michael Vercio. They also allow Able to service new sizes and categories of parts, including full helicopter transmission cases and large-scale commercial fixed-wing components. The expanded capabilities allow us to complete a larger range of repairs in house and offer improved efficiency to our customers.

Last year, the Mesa, Arizona-based aircraft component repair and overhaul specialist began undertaking work on the landing gear of the Boeing 737 Next Generation, part of the reason behind its $3 million expansion. Its enhanced capabilities extend to automating its repair and overhaul process to accommodate parts weighing up to 4,000 pounds and measuring up to 80 inches in length.

Haydale Graphene hit by aerospace sector turbulence – Proactive Investors USA & Canada

Haydale Graphene Industries PLC () has lowered its expectations for this year after slow sales in the US and UK.

US unit HCThas seen disappointing demand for silicon carbide (SiC) whiskers and blends, while the new blanks production line started later than scheduled in November.

Interest has been very strong subsequently but problems for key customers in the aerospace industry mean the shortfall will not be made good in the second half.

UK orders have also been slower to come through than anticipated and while sales are up, they, too, have undershot expectations, said theAmmanford-based business.

Haydale has reduced overheads by 900,000 and closed its Taiwan operation though there will be a 410,000 revenue hit from this action in the second half.

Keith Broadbent, chief executive, remains upbeat about the longer-term potential.

: "Whilst the decision to close Haydale Taiwan, the later than expected commissioning of the blanks line and the slowdown in the aerospace sector in the US has affected our short-term revenues, the directors remain committed to delivering the commercial priorities that we have set the group.

"The new global sales team is already delivering positive results with a strong pipeline of profitable opportunities being actively pursued," he said.

The group's cash position was 2.7mln as at 31 December.

Haydale will publish its interim numbers to end-December on 27 February.

Collins Aerospace honors TDPS with Rescue of the Year Award – Vertical Magazine

At a ceremony Sunday, leaders from Collins Aerospace Systems helicopter rescue hoist business presented the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) with the companys Rescue of the Year Award. Each year, Collins Aerospace honors one of its Goodrich hoist customers for a particularly daring helicopter rescue executed using the companys hoist. This year, Texas DPS was recognized for rescues it carried out during a flood in Junction, Texas, in October 2018. Collins Aerospace is a unit of United Technologies Corp.

After Junction received more than 18 inches of rain in less than 24 hours, the Llano River breached its banks and began flooding the surrounding area at a rate of 120 cubic feet per second. A nearby recreational vehicle campground was completely consumed by the rising water, which left trailers turned upside down and residents swept away or stranded in trees.

DPS 107 aircrew members Cpt. Shawn Stephenson, Lt. Jeff Evans and Texas Highway Patrol Tech. Sgt. Steven Tippett were called in to assist with water rescues in the Junction area. Working together, the crew saved the lives of four campground residents over the next few hours, including one woman who had spent nearly five hours in the Llano River and drifted 23 miles before being rescued by the aircrew after multiple attempts.

In all my 21 years in law enforcement, including 11 years in the Aviation Operations Division, these rescues rank among the most technically difficult ones that Ive ever seen our crews conduct, said Texas DPS Maj. Jim Rohrman. During the flood, the water reached speeds of nearly 30 mph and four residents lost their lives. If it were not for the quick response, timely decision-making and technical expertise of Stephenson, Evans and Tippett, its likely that number wouldve been even higher.

Collins Aerospace is pleased to recognize Texas DPS with this years Rescue of the Year Award, said Cory VanBuskirk, general manager, Hoist and Winch for Collins Aerospace. As in the case of the Llano River flood, we recognize that our hoists play an integral role in the search and rescue operations of our customers, and we are committed to providing them with the industrys most advanced products in order to support their life-saving missions.

Collins Aerospace is one of the leaders in todays helicopter hoist rescue community. With nearly 40 different models of Goodrich hydraulic and electric rescue hoists and cargo winches, the company estimates it has more than 7,000 airborne hoists placed throughout the global fleet on commercial and military platforms.

Honeywell Reports Earnings Tomorrow. Heres What to Expect. – Barron’s

Text size

Industrial conglomerate Honeywell reports earnings Friday morning before the market opens.

It is an important report. Honeywell (ticker: HON), after all, is one of the largest industrial companies in the world. Its businesses touch nearly every sector of the economy, including aerospace, technology, logistics, retail and energy. Company earnings, however, dont always get the attention they deserve, because Honeywell isnt a stock that draws widely divergent opinions.

Take aerospace peer General Electric (GE). Wall Street price targets range from $5 to $18 a share. The $13 spread is more than 100% of the current stock price, far wider than the average bull-bear spread for stocks in the Dow Jones Industrial Average. And the $5 target is more than 60% below current levels.

Street targets for Honeywell stock range from $163 to $208 a share. The $45 spread is about 25% of the current stock price and the $163 a share is just 7% lower than current levels.

The biggest problem investors have with Honeywell shares these days is valuation. The stock trades for 20 times estimated 2020 earnings, about an 8% premium to stocks in the S&P 500.

Analysts expect Honeywell earnings to exceed estimates, because that is what usually happens. Heres what else to expect on Friday, along with some recent history.

Barrons recently wrote positively about Honeywell, believing the company is in the midst of a transformation to a higher-market, software-industrial hybrid. We still feel that way. But since that article appeared in November, the stock is down about 3%, trailing the S&P 500 by about 8 percentage points.

Over the past 12 months Honeywell stock is up about 24%.

Boeing reports worst full-year loss in its history, but CEO Calhoun vows well get through it – Seattle Times

Boeing doubled its projection of the cost of the 737 MAX crisis Wednesday, adding another $9.2 billion in losses, accounting write-offs and estimated higher future production costs. This brings the total to $18.4 billion.

The company reported a full-year net loss of $636 million, the largest in Boeings history.

In additional bad news, the company announced a further cut in the production rate of the 787 Dreamliner, which will slow production at the widebody jet plant in Everett.

But new CEO Dave Calhoun said hes confident about the MAX and Boeings eventual recovery. We will get through this moment, he said. I believe well deliver the safest airplane in the sky.

He also insisted that Boeings culture and its recent corporate focus on finances and cost-cutting were not factors in the companys flawed design process that led to the two MAX crashes that killed 346 people.

Calhoun said getting the MAX safely returned to the skies will be Boeings overriding priority.

Invoking the companys legacy of safety and quality, he cited the weekends successful first flight of the massive 777X airplane as a proof point of Boeings engineering and technical prowess.

One analyst said Wednesdays report described a kitchen sink quarter, suggesting that as a new CEO, Calhoun wants to put all of the companys negative news out at once.

The decision to cut the 787 Dreamliner production rate further was not a surprise, given sluggish near-term demand for widebody jets and a dwindling backlog of 787 orders.

Boeing produces 14 of those jets per month, seven each inEverett and in North Charleston, S.C. The company hadpreviously said that it would go down to 12 jets per monthin late 2020.

On Wednesday, the company conceded that outlook had been too optimistic and said it will cut the rate to 10 jets per month in early 2021. Chief financial officer Greg Smith said a decision will be made later on whether to maintain the even split of work between Everett and North Charleston.

Boeing said it hopes to hike the rate back to 12 jets per month in 2023.

That will depend on orders from China coming through after the trade tension with the U.S. eases. Even then, Boeing doesnt anticipate returning to the 14 jets per month production level.

Yet the 787 news was swamped by the sea of red ink flowing from the MAX crisis.

While the rest of the company was profitable, absorbing the MAX hitresulted in an overall fourth-quarter loss from operations of $2.2 billion and a net loss of just over $1 billion.

The new additional costs of the MAXs grounding include aone-time accounting write-off of $2.6 billion related to paying compensation and making concessions to airline customers.

Boeing also estimated that reduced 737 production would add $2.6 billion in additional costs, related to the increase in overhead costs as more time is needed to deliver airplanes than planned after the halt in production and the anticipation of a slow ramp-up over an extended period after production resumes.

And, finally, Boeing projected another $4 billion that it will absorb as losses in the year ahead not reflected in the 2019 financial results to cover abnormal production costs to be incurred during the suspension and gradual resumption of production at low production rates.

Boeing had estimated the total cost of the grounding through the end of September at $9.2 billion. Wednesdays additional $9.2 billion projection covers the impact from October through the anticipated return of the MAX to service, which Boeing has said it expects by midsummer.

The loss for 2019 doesnt take into account the $4 billion projection for abnormal costs in 2020.

Calhoun, who took charge earlier this month after the board fired Dennis Muilenburg, said in a statement that Boeing is financially strong enough to withstand this accumulation of losses.

We recognize we have a lot of work to do. We are focused on returning the 737 MAX to service safely and restoring the long-standing trust that the Boeing brand represents with the flying public, Calhoun said. Fortunately, the strength of our overall Boeing portfolio of businesses provides the financial liquidity to follow a thorough and disciplined recovery process.

Asked how Boeing had missed the design problems with the new MAX flight-control system the Maneuvering Characteristics Augmentation System (MCAS) he reiterated previous comments that the design made incorrect assumptions about pilot reaction, assumptions also made by the regulators.

That is a very discrete, very specific engineering decision that ultimately was flawed. We all wish it wasnt, Calhoun said in a teleconference following the earnings report.

I dont think culture contributed to that miss, he said, adding that he has spoken directly to the engineers who designed MCAS and that they thought they were doing exactly the right thing, based on the experience theyve had.

However, Calhoun conceded that, beyond the design of MCAS, there may be broader culture issues at Boeing related to schedule and cost pressures.

During the teleconference with media, he was asked specifically about a detail that emerged earlier this monthwhen Boeing disclosed to investigators a trove of internal Boeing emails and instant message conversations.

Those documents showed that Boeings chief technical pilot on the MAX, Mark Forkner, considered it a crucial mission to dissuade Lion Air from its plan to require simulator training for its pilots. This wasmore than a year before one of Lion Airs MAX planes crashed, killing 189 people.

Calhoun responded that whether culture and schedule in any shape or form may have led to a bad recommendation on [pilot] training is something hes going to take very seriously.

I cant stand the thought, he added.

For the full year, Boeings 2019 revenue was $76.6 billion, down from $101 billion in 2018.

The net loss for the full year was $636 million, or $1.12 per share, compared with a 2018 profit of $10.4 billion, or $17.85 per share.

Within the Commercial Airplanes division, revenue for the year dropped 44% compared to 2018 as its jet deliveries fell by more than 400. The unitsloss from operations was $6.7 billion compared to a 2018 profit of $7.8 billion.

In the fourth quarter, company revenue was $17.9 billion, down 37% from $28.3 billion a year earlier. The net loss for the fourth quarter was $1 billion, or $1.79 per share, compared with a 2018 profit of $3.4 billion, or $5.93 per share.

As if its Commercial Airplanes division hadnt delivered enough bad news, Boeing also booked a further $410 million write-offdue to the recent setback of its Commercial Crew space program for ferrying astronauts and cargo to the International Space Station.

In December, a software error cut short the first orbital test flight of the Starliner crew capsule. The write-off will cover the cost of a potential additional uncrewed mission to get the program back on track.

In a note to investors Wednesday, Rob Stallard, a financial analyst with Vertical Research partners, referred to the earnings results as the Kitchen Sink quarter, implying that new CEO Calhoun wanted to get all the bad news out of the way as he begins his tenure.

However, as Stallard noted, with the MAX still not in the air, Boeings financial guidance remains suspended and the markets will need reassurance that this really is the lowest point of the MAX crisis.

Despite the size of the newly projected cost of the MAX crisis, it was somewhat smaller than Wall Street analysts had feared. Expectations were for something worse, said Ron Epstein, an analyst with Bank of America.

The consensus forecast among analysts was that Boeing would write off another $4.6 billion in customer compensation to the airlines, rather than the $2.6 billion Boeing projected. Epstein saidthat estimate could rise later. Its their best guess at this time, given the conversations theyve had with airlines.

The stock market took solace in the losses being less than expected and seemed to anticipate that things can only get better: Boeings stock closed at $321.83 for the day, up $5.27, or 1.7%.

10 Costs to Expect When Applying to Medical School – Yahoo Finance

Costs to apply to med school can stack up.

While most prospective students might be focused on the overall price tag of attending medical school, the cost to apply can often amount to thousands of dollars. "An applicant to 15 medical schools can easily spend over $10,000 in the application process," says Dr. McGreggor Crowley, a medical school admissions counselor at IvyWise, a New York-based admissions consulting company. For prospective students interested in applying to medical school, here are some expenses to expect.

Preparing for the MCAT

While the cost of the MCAT exceeds $300 for those who do not qualify for fee assistance, prospective students can spend much more preparing for the exam. "Many students benefit from test prep services -- those can range from a couple of hundred dollars for practice tests and questions to several thousand dollars for in-person, extended prep courses," says Dr. Sylvie Stacy, a board-certified physician who graduated from the University of Massachusetts--Worcester medical school in 2011.

Taking the MCAT

Prospective students can save money by registering early. The MCAT costs at least $320. For those who register within eight days before the test date, the cost is $375. MCAT test-takers outside the U.S., Canada, Guam, the U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico pay an additional international registration fee of $115.

Access to the MSAR database

Admissions experts recommend using the online Medical School Admission Requirements database compiled by the Association of American Medical Colleges. The MSAR database is a resource that lists information provided by admissions offices at U.S. and Canadian medical schools. The cost to access the database, which is published each spring, is $28 for a one-year subscription.

Primary application fees

The American Medical College Application Service, or AMCAS, is a centralized medical school application clearinghouse. The AMCAS primary application fee is $170 for sending materials to one school and $40 for each additional school. Aspiring doctors who are interested in osteopathic medical schools can file applications via AACOMAS, the American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine Application Service. AACOMAS bills $195 for the first primary application and $45 for every additional primary application. Meanwhile, those who want to attend a public medical school in Texas can submit their primary application materials via the Texas Medical & Dental Schools Application Service, or TMDSAS, which charges a flat fee of $185.

Secondary application fees

After students apply, schools may respond by asking them to submit a secondary application. These vary from school to school, and most require students to pay an additional application fee. "These, of course, have fees associated with them ranging from $75 to over $100," says Dr. Crowley from IvyWise. Harvard Medical School, for instance, charges M.D. hopefuls without an AMCAS fee waiver $100 to file a secondary, or supplemental, application. Students with AMCAS fee waivers do not need to pay this fee.

College registrar services

Most colleges charge a former student a fee for sending transcripts to medical schools. This service might cost around $10 for each transcript, according to Artem Volos, chief financial officer and chief operating officer at ClutchPrep.com, a Florida-based test prep service he co-founded.

Interview travel costs

Medical school interviews can be the most expensive part of the application process, Dr. Crowley says. "Depending on how many schools a student interviews at, it can cost upwards of $500 to $1,000 per school, and interviews at the schools in the same city can be difficult to coordinate for the same trip."

Interview attire

Another expense associated with in-person interviews is clothing, which usually has to be business attire. Justin Hahn, a medical student at the Dr. Kiran C. Patel College of Osteopathic Medicine at Nova Southeastern University in Florida, wrote in an email: "Buying a suit and paying for alterations also incurred a large one-time expense. However, I was able to reuse the suit for multiple interviews, which helps make up for the expensive cost."

Admitted student campus visit

Students who receive admissions offers are usually invited to campus to take a second look. For example, the medical school at the University of Michigan--Ann Arbor holds a two-day second-look weekend for admitted students in the spring. "If a student is admitted to a medical school, they may want to travel back to that school for an admitted student experience, again footing the bill themselves for transportation, food and lodging," Dr. Crowley says, comparing the costs of a second-look experience with traveling for school interviews.

Acceptance deposits

Some medical schools require a deposit, often nonrefundable, to hold a spot. The fee usually will keep an acceptance in place until May while an applicant decides where to attend. The medical school at Georgetown University, for instance, charges $500 for a deposit. Hahn, the Nova Southeastern student, says a prospective student "can spend anywhere from $500 to $3,000 for deposit fees."
