Bitcoin and the coronavirus: bulls vs bears – Decrypt

The coronavirus: cases are now above 120,000 worldwide, and the World Health Organization has officially determined its a pandemic. Its torn families apart, tanked the global economy, and world leaders are calling it the biggest global crisis in decades.

So, uh, hows the coronavirus affecting crypto? Though some claim that Bitcoin doesnt track regular marketsthis week it did. Just as global markets sharply dropped this week, on early Friday morning, the price of Bitcoin sunk to its lowest since March, 2019, valued at $4,106, according to metrics site CoinMarketCap. Like global markets, its recovered slightly, now valued at around $5,425.

So, are people getting rid of magic money so they can feed themselves under quarantine? Or will Bitcoins price pump back up as global markets decline, proving it to be a safe haven after all? We asked the crypto-experts, in the latest edition of Bulls vs Bears.

Eric Wall, CIO at crypto investment firm Arcane Assets, told Decrypt that this short-term volatility is down to people de-risking their portfoliocryptos a risky asset, even when the economys doing well. But in the longer term, Wall said, coronavirus-related stimulus packages from governments are likely to further bankrupt fiat's reputation as a form of store-of-value.

He thinks that the crisis will reveal to investors that cryptocurrencies represent the only non-inflatable monetary asset that exist in a digital form that we have access to. COVID-19 is a much greater stress test to the fiat currency system than to cryptocurrencies, Wall pointed out: In a way, they're excellently positioned to benefit from this tragedy.

In a way, [cryptocurrencies are] excellently positioned to benefit from this tragedy.

Eric Wall

Jack O'Holleran, CEO of SKALE Labs, a decentralized application startup, thinks its business as usual for Bitcoin, except we're doing more virtual events and less handshaking. He acknowledges that public market drops will certainly affect new financings in crypto and overall assets flowing in, but that crypto wont feel the economic shock as much as the travel, oil, and gas industries.

If anything, the funding shortages that follow the coronavirus will cut the fat off of the crypto economy, allowing well funded and well executing projects to come out of this in an even stronger position."

Mike Alfred, CEO and Co-Founder of Digital Assets Data, which builds software for crypto hedge funds, told Decrypt that Bitcoin is setting up for a very bullish 18-20 months, and I don't think coronavirus will have any long term impacts on it. He thinks that Bitcoin has behaved well amidst coronavirus scares; some days it appears to be correlating with certain assets, but in the long run it is not correlated with anything, he said.

If anything, Alfred said, the recent interest rate cuts are bullish for Bitcoin, as they create more liquidity for investors. And in 2020, Bitcoin has the highest daily average price over any year of its existence, he said. Granted, 2020 hasnt lasted that long, but this further supports a more bullish backdrop for the upcoming Bitcoin halvingwhen, in mid-May 2020, the supply of Bitcoins issued as mining rewards will cut in half. (Some think the halving will lead to a price bump for Bitcoin.)

Dan Schatt, CEO of Cred, a crypto loans company, told Decrypt that the euphoria that had been predicted in the run-up to Bitcoins May halving looks to have been dampened. He pointed out that governments around the world are creating fiscal stimulus packages, including the delivery of so-called helicopter money. But aside from further rate cuts, which are already historically low, theres not a lot else that policymakers can do, he said. He expects high volatility over the next few weeks, though thinks that the market will pick up following the Bitcoin halving.

Brian McCabe, Head of Market Insights at Paxful, a peer-to-peer crypto marketplace, takes a cautious approach. He thinks that Bitcoin could benefit from economic pain caused in countries that must pay debt back in the US dollar.

If the coronavirus continues to weaken local currencies and makes the dollar stronger, McCabe said, money will continue to flow out of these economies and their relative debt will increase. That could lead to Bitcoin once again becoming the alternative, if these economies continue to come under pressure and people are unable to preserve wealth in their own currency.

But equally, McCabe said, Margin calls and investors losing money in equities and other higher-risk markets should lead to more people having to close positions in Bitcoin to reduce overall risk exposure. He notes that its a similar flight to safety to that which caused the yield on US 30-year treasury bonds to reach a record all-time low this week.

David Gerard, blockchain critic and author of Attack of the 50 Foot Blockchain, pointed to the impact of the coronavirus on crypto conferences. Conferences are important for generating buzz around coins and new crypto financial instruments as well, Gerard said. Video can replace the main sessions, but it can't replace the "hallway track"meeting people you didn't expect to and talking, he said.

The death of conferences is not, of course, fatal to crypto, but if companies cant meet investors, then business cant flow, and deals wont be made. Decisions might be postponed until the conference circuit is revived, whenever that may be.

Of course, with Bitcoin forming such a minor part of the global economy, cryptos future may be out of the hands of a group of pundits. According to Ido Sadeh Man, founder and chairman at the board of Saga, a reserve-backed global currency: "If coronavirus teaches us anything is that we live in a hyper-globalized world, whether we like it or not. The exact same virus in the 1980's would have been a Chinese crisis, not a global one."

Sure, Man adds, in such unstable times, people seek first to regain the security they feel is not provided by their national institutions. But perhaps a truly international currency like Bitcoin will show its worth. As uncorrelated as it maybe, Bitcoin may reside in the side of crisis opportunities, he said.

But one things for sure, as Sinjin David Jung, founder and Managing Director at the International Blockchain Monetary Reserve, a social impact economic development reserve and advisory, pointed out: There are no bulls or bears when the entire global economy is being brought down to its knees as the very issue of life and death now take center stage.

The Fight for $5k and the Bitcoin Bull is on Price Analysis – CryptoGlobe

Its really time for Bitcoin (BTC) to put up or shut up, as markets around the world continue collapsing in the face of COVID-19 reactions. Bitcoin in particular is on its knees, shaving the skin off of the final uptrend that can possibly save it from pure oblivion, around $5k.

Starting the weekly, we see that Bitcoin is just now fighting to hold a level that is probably one of the most critical levels in its entire price history. This level surrounds a multi-year uptrend, the Bitcoin Bull as some people call it.

BTC chart by TradingView

Less important, there is also a significant support/resistance level here, as well as the 200-week moving average. The deep buy wick that we have already seen is, perhaps, some glimmer of hope that the level can ultimately survive.

Turning to the monthly something Ive never done here we can note two things. The first is that, if support around $5k is lost, the next major inflection/support zone is down squarely at $3k.

BTC chart by TradingView

The second thing is the notable volume gap we see from about $6.1k to $4.6k. For our purposes, this is a good thing, as it increases the likelihood that Bitcoin will be able to remain in this zone for the rest of 2020. This is because volume gaps tend to want to be filled and tend to attract trading although, by the same token, we might be worried about the volume gap at $3k as well.

Finally, if we take a look at Bitcoin and altcoin dominance, we see that the previous trends have been fractured with no new one emerging yet. The previous risk-on trend Bitcoin down, alts up has clearly been halted with Bitcoin coursing up again from 61%, and altcoins holding at 7%.

BTC chart by TradingView

Anecdotally, we might expect alts to continue back down and Bitcoin up, as risk flies away from all markets as fast as it can crypto proving to be no exception, so far.

Crypto Exchanges Overwhelmed on Bitcoin’s Most Volatile Day of the Year – Bitcoin News

Binance chief Changpeng Zhao referred to it as Bloodbath day, and many in the cryptosphere will echo those sentiments, as fallout from the COVID-19 pandemic reverberates through global markets. As crypto exchanges were thronged by frantic traders looking to capitalize on or seek refuge from the unprecedented market dump, several platforms buckled under the pressure.

Also read: Market Update: Global Economy Jolts Bitcoin, Overall Crypto Cap Loses $50B

A panic-stricken sell-off of bitcoin and other risk-on digital assets has led to a number of crypto exchanges experiencing outages. On Thursday, March 12, Binances CZ noted that the platforms load was 5x greater than all previous peaks. The exchange was handling 146,500 messages per second, with a 30GB/s market data push from a lone source. Aside from the occasional glitch, Zhao says systems appear to be holding up for now. Kraken was also briefly down earlier today.

Over on Bitmex, the Seychelles-based exchange experienced the most liquidations in 16 months: $702 million worth, $698 million of which were longs. The Ethereum network, meanwhile, has been toiling under heavy network congestion, with gas prices spiking to as high as $3.70 today, and transactions waiting hours to be processed. Binance has temporarily increased withdrawal fees for ETH and ERC20 tokens.

Network activity has been driven up by traders seeking to sell their holdings and under-collateralized defi positions being forcibly liquidated. ETH also nosedived by 35%, its most significant one-day decline since 2018. The price of BTC, meanwhile, fell below $6,000 for the first time since May while altcoins also plummeted. Against this wild backdrop, we have a halving on the horizon.

The theory that bitcoin might be a safe haven as oil, stocks, equities and bond yields plunge has been disproved: but even gold, widely viewed as the ultimate safe haven asset, dropped by more than 1% on Changpeng Zhaos aptly-titled Bloodbath Day. Most crypto traders are seeking refuge by switching into stablecoins while knife-catchers have been buying up cheap coins in anticipation of the next rally. Volatility remains a traders best friend. As Bitmexs Arthur Hayes put it, I know all you HODLers say you love cheap coins, but will you really back up the truck if the S&P is flirting with 2,000? We shall see. He added:

The time to back up the truck is when the futures basis goes flat or negative. That will signal an evaporation of optimism. Then you must surf the tidal wave of free money, and begin buying crypto with both hands. First fill your Bitcoin handbags, then acquire all the other dog shit even CRipple might pop. Long live volatility, and stay healthy.

To say the economy has experienced turbulence in the wake of coronavirus would be a gross understatement. Assets are in virtual freefall across traditional and crypto markets, with pledges by the Fed and the Bank of England to cut interest rates seeming to have little effect.

Cruise liner and airline stocks have been some of the worst hit, with Boeings stock dropping 50% from last year. Numerous flights have been cancelled, and President Trump has announced a travel ban on 26 European countries in an attempt to contain the virus. Italy, one of the worst-hit countries, has come to an eerie standstill, all shops and restaurants except pharmacies and food outlets closed to the public. Many believe their own nations will soon follow suit, as infection spreads at a frightening pace.

Although the short-term outlook for bitcoin remains bearish, and sentiments like keep calm and HODL have been doing the rounds on Crypto Twitter, the sense of frenzy is impossible to ignore. As Messaris Ryan Selkis urged, Its ugly today, but this too shall pass. Stay safe. Keep building.

Why It Might Be time to Buy Aerospace Supply Stocks – Barron’s

Text size

The aerospace supply chain has dealt with 737 MAX woes far more effectively than Boeing, and the better relative performance of aerospace suppliers shares attests to their resilience. Now, however, the fallout from the coronavirus pandemic is hitting the sectorand that could create opportunities for investors.

Up until year-end 2019, shares of the aerospace suppliers Barrons tracks rose about 16% since the second fatal MAX crash, on March 10, 2019. That is far better than Boeings performance (ticker: BA), and it outpaces the comparable gains the S&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average.

But since the start of 2020, suppliers stocks have tumbled about 40% as coronavirus fears have grown. (Boeing shares are down more than 50% year to date.) That offers investors a good entry point into these suppliers stocks.

Aerospace is characterized by a handful of highly capable suppliers whose customers include a smaller number of huge companiessuch as Boeingand the U.S. Defense Department. The aerospace supply chain can be visualized as three pyramids: an engine pyramid, an aerostructures pyramid, and a systems pyramid. Plane makers Boeing, along with European rival Airbus (AIR.France), stand at the top of all three groups. Heres a look at some of the suppliers whose valuations have come down, and where they fit in the supply chain.

Engine makers are one level down from the aircraft makers. There are only a handful of companies capable of making engines for large commercial jets. United Technologies (UTX) Pratt & Whitney division, for instance, makes the new, high-tech geared turbofan engine for the Airbus A320 NEO. Safran (SAF.France) and General Electric (GE) make engines for the 737 MAX, as well as other jets. GE and Rolls-Royce (RR.London) make most of the engines for larger, twin-aisle jets. Their engines power planes such as Boeings 787 and 777, as well as the Airbus A330 and A350.

Underneath the engine suppliers are makers of subsystems, including Germanys MTU Aero Engines (MTX.Germany), Americas Woodward (WWD), and Japans IHI (7013.Japan).

Below that trio are suppliers of parts including GKN, which was bought by Europes by Melrose Industries (MRO.London), as well as Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (7011.Japan), among others.

The last tier of the engine pyramid are materials suppliers. Berkshire Hathaway bought a large supplier of forged and cast parts, PCP. Arconic (ARNC), Allegheny Technologies (ATI), and privately held Doncasters supply the industry with high-tech alloys too.

The pyramid visualization, of course, isnt perfect. GE, for instance, bought engine subsystem maker Avio in 2013. GE plays in multiple levels of the supply chain.

Barrons group of engine suppliers is down about 38% year to date and trade for less than 13 times estimated 2020 earnings, down from 17.8 times earnings at the end of 2019.

The aerostructures pyramid has suppliers such as Spirit AeroSystems (SPR) underneath Boeing and Airbus. Spirit, for its part, bakes the carbon composite tubes of the Boeing 787 in giant autoclaves, which are essentially high-tech ovens. The ovens are 120 feet long and 30 feet in diameter. Japans Kawasaki Heavy Industries (7012.Japan) make carbon composite wings for the 787.

Underneath large aerostructure makers come material and fastener suppliers such as Arconic. Modern jets use a lot of composite materials, which are lighter and stronger than comparable metals. Hexcel (HXL), which is merging with Woodward, Japans Toray Industries (3402.Japan) and Cytec, which is now part of European chemical company Solvay (SOLB.Belgium), supply the composites.

Barrons group of aerostructures suppliers is down about 41% year to date and trades for about 13.6 times estimated 2020 earnings, similar to year-end 2019 price-to-earnings ratios. Spirit AeroSystems earnings estimates have come down.

Large industrial conglomerates, such as United Technologies and Honeywell International (HON), reside at the top of the systems pyramid.

United Technologies, through its 2011 acquisition of Goodrich supplies landing gear. Landing gear component suppliers sit below United Tech. And material suppliers feed the component suppliers.

Barrons group of systems suppliers is down about 34% year to date and trades for about 12 times estimated 2020 earnings, down from 17.6 times earnings at the end of 2019.

Aerospace is an oligopolya limited number of suppliers share the market at each level of the pyramid. The industry evolved to this, in part, because of high barriers to entry. Aerospace engineering isnt easy, and it takes a lot to get aerospace parts approved. And in the aerospace business, no onefor the most partwants to buy a spare part from a company that didnt design the original.

The MAX problems didnt create an acute volume crisis for the suppliers. While they had less work because of the MAX, they still had plenty to do.

The coronavirus shouldnt create an acute volume crisis either. Boeing reported minus 28 net orders in February, but the backlog is more than 5,000 jets. Airlines, not aerospace suppliers, feel most of the painthats where volumes can fall hardest, fastest. U.S. airline stocks are down 35% to 55% year to date.

Why Shares of Large Aerospace Companies Are Falling Today – Motley Fool

What happened

Shares of Boeing (NYSE:BA) and General Electric (NYSE:GE) each opened down more than 11% Monday morning, and shares of Lockheed Martin (NYSE:LMT) were down more than 6%, as COVID-19 fears continue to rattle the market. The ripple effects of the outbreak are going to be substantial and could eat into a number of sectors in the months to come.

The coronavirus sell-off has been going on for a number of weeks now, but Monday's open was ugly even by recent standards. The S&P 500 opened down 7%, immediately triggering a market halt.

Aerospace giants were caught up in the selling. Commercial aerospace figures to be among the sectors hardest hit by a coronavirus-related slowdown, as airlines have been scrambling to cut flights and reduce capacity in response to falling demand.

Less flying means fewer airplanes are needed, and fewer GE engines. Despite the market panic, it seems unlikely the airlines will experience any permanent drop-off in demand, but a prolonged downturn could mean airlines deferring new planes scheduled for delivery in 2020, which if nothing else will delay revenue for Boeing and GE.

General Electric also has significant exposure to the energy sector and is likely feeling the impact of a collapse in the price of crude oil. GE is also facing this slowdown in the middle of a multiyear turnaround that could get delayed further if end markets dry up.

Boeing and fellow defense contractors, including Lockheed Martin, aren't as directly affected by coronavirus, as the United States is likely to continue to buy warplanes and helicopters even as the virus spreads. But the larger the crisis gets, the more it is likely to cost the government. In an environment where the Pentagon was already being pushed to make difficult decisions to conserve cash, that's worrisome news for defense investors.

This is a tough market, and until the coronavirus is deemed under control, it is going to be hard to find a bottom. Things could get worse before they get better.

That said, there is nothing to suggest that the fundamentals of these businesses have changed. Lockheed Martin remains one of the best-run businesses in the defense sector, while GE is progressing but potentially had "limited upside" even without the virus concerns. Boeing investors meanwhile need to remain focused on the company's effort to navigate through the 737 MAX crisis.

It's hard to focus on the big picture on a day when stocks are plunging, but for those with the stomach to ride out the turbulence -- or at least not check stock prices while the outbreak scare plays out -- the current chaos is sure to create opportunities.

What Transformations Will New Aerospace Technologies Bring in the Future? – CIOReview

In the past few years, aerospace is being bombarded with new technology advancements. How are these innovations impacting it?

FREMONT, CA:In modern days aerospace industry, manufacturers generally feel bound to function in a particular way as it is a tested, validated process, or because the aerospaces physics govern specific limitations on materials, designs, and systems.

However, these manufacturers will be unable to obtain real innovating if they continue to do the same things and anticipate for distinct outcomes.

These days, more aerospace shops are discovering automation because of collaborative robotic and machine incorporated robotic technology. Cobots are suitable since they enable operators to move forward, inspect, and verify the grinding process.

However, with measurement and cell controller technology becoming more sophisticated, shops might be less dependent on humans and adopt entirely closed-loop systems.

In these kinds of systems, once a part is completed on a grinder, a robot moves it to a measurement system for investigation, and then an algorithm present in the cell controller affirms if tolerances are within an acceptable range and if there is any need to change the grinding program to adjust for any kind of drifts in the performance. Besides, these systems can automatically enter corrections to the offsets of the grinder.

Moreover, 3D printing plays a significant role in the manufacture of aerospace components. This innovation introduces new avenues for intricate part design and potentially allows aerospace original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to make components with reduced weight as well as improved durability.

In addition to modern processes, aerospace manufacturers constantly look at new materials that can enhance parts and their performance.

Aerospace OEMs are continually researching new designs for making aircraft even more proficient and faster.

However, it is tough to design aircraft, which is light enough yet with sufficient power to fly into the stratosphere and retain such incredibly high speeds.

Other design innovations, like electric-powered aircraft, can minimize noise and air pollution.

If battery technology continues to advance at its existing speed, it is possible for electric airplanes to become a reality.

In spite of numerous avenues for growth and change, innovation in the field of aerospace is likely to come at a calculated and cautious pace.

Learn how Concordia is jetting to forefront of aerospace – Mirage News

From a pilot eye-tracking simulator to roundtables on sustainability and more, the Take-off/Touch-down programming at Concordias 4TH SPACE from March 2 to April 7 will make the high-flying world of the aerospace industry accessible to the university community and public at large.

Many Concordia researchers are engaging with the far-reaching and interdisciplinary field of aerospace.

With developments in engineering, science and technology, however, come questions for the environment, social sciences and regulatory bodies: what is the human experience of controlling flight? Why arent there more women in the industry? Who are the people pioneering the field? As a high polluting industry, how is aviation turning green? Who governs flight?

There are so many challenges facing the industry, says Nadia Bhuiyan, Concordias vice-provost of partnerships and experiential learning.

Imagine that by 2037, the International Air Transport Association is predicting that the number of passengers will increase to more than eight billion. Now imagine the impact of this on the environment, on airports, on communities living near airports, on aircraft design, on the cost of travel and so on.

And the competition for these passengers will be intense.

China is expected to surpass the United States as the worlds largest air passenger market. Concordia researchers are at the forefront of developing more efficient, effective and connected aircraft and optimizing the processes needed to design and develop them. They are looking to find ways to reduce fuel consumption in airports and to better schedule flights to reduce congestion and wait times, Bhuiyan adds.

Our researchers are also developing space-related technologies in an effort to better understand what lies beyond our atmosphere. And to continue to tackle these challenges well into the future, we need to build our 21st-century workforce one that could benefit from a lot more women.

For the duration of Take-off/Touch-down, 4TH SPACE will house drones, planes, wind tunnels, simulators and aspects of the historical development of aerospace, as well as foreground Concordias cutting-edge research via videos and interdisciplinary roundtable discussions.

Visitors to the event will receive a travel passport fashioned to guide them as they encounter planes designed and built by Concordias Society of Automotive Engineers, a spherical drone from UAV Concordia, drones from the Concordia Chapter of the American Helicopter Society and a variety of rockets and prototypes from Space Concordia.

4TH SPACE visitors will also encounter the Ambular drone developed by staff from the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). The Ambular 2.0 is a quick, safe and versatile response unit that can easily navigate the diversity of the built and natural environment, rapidly moving a person facing a medical emergency to the nearest hospital.

The Ambulars accompanying virtual reality experience allows visitors to navigate the drone through different terrains and feel what it would be like to be the pilot.

The Ambular research project is a partnership between ICAO staff, Concordia and other collaborators. The ICAO team has designed the vehicle prototype featured at 4TH SPACE, explains Luis Rodrigues, professor of electrical and computer engineering in the Gina Cody School of Engineering and Computer Science.

The project will focus on the development of air mobility systems capable of performing optimal trajectory planning, emergency response and trajectory re-planning in real-time, energy management and battery recharging, air traffic management and virtual reality and augmented reality based on real-time video streaming, he says.

All of these capabilities are expected to be on board a fleet of autonomous electrical vertical takeoff and landing vehicles in the future of air mobility. This research project gives an important step in that direction.

Stripping down aviation to its materiality, the Concordia Centre for Composites (CONCOM) is bringing in an aeroplane tail rotor made of carbon fibre. The choice of material reflects the needs for lighter materials in aerospace design, moving from aluminium to carbon fibre that is tested at CONCOM to understand if the strength is enough for industrial needs.

Material from this lab has been used for research at Concordia, including for parts of Space Concordias Rocketry Division, and testing is done with an automated fibre placement machine with a robotic arm, the only one of its kind.

Alongside the fixed installations, researchers, professionals and students will come together each week for roundtable discussions that highlight a different aspect of aerospace.

Aerospace engineering classes will also activate the space, giving an insight into the technical facets of the industry.

On March 2, at the first in the series of roundtables, Susan Liscout-Hanke, associate professor of mechanical, industrial and aerospace engineering, will moderate a discussion on green aviation with participants from Bombardier, ICAO, CIADI and the Gina Cody School.

The conversation will relate to solar power for aircrafts, thermal analysis, composite materials and biofuels, as well as waste reduction in design, manufacturing and supply chain.

On March 10, Bhuiyan will facilitate a discussion on how to increase the number of women in Aerospace by panellists from ICAO, SAE Aero, CAE, Pratt & Whitney Canada, the John Molson School of Business and the Gina Cody School.

Rodrigues will lead a conversation on March 16 by participants including members of the Department of Psychology and Marinvent Corporation on the challenges related to drones and mobility, regulatory issues and the human experience of aviation.

The final roundtable in the series, to be held April 3, will look at the future of space research at Concordia. The roundtable will connect student associations and faculty members to explore Concordias upcoming efforts in space exploration.

Throughout the programming, 4TH SPACE will also host classes on design structure, avionics systems and the final design review for the aircraft design capstone project.

The showcase will culminate on April 7 with Aerospace Day, dedicated to air and space mobility, at the Concordia University Conference Centre on the ninth floor of the John Molson Building, MB-9, 1450 Guy St.

Stop by 4TH SPACE during the Take-off/Touch-down programming to soar through the universe of aerospace to infinity and beyond!

St. Vincent Indianapolis to cancel all ‘elective non-urgent’ surgeries – WTHR

INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) Ascension St. Vincent announced Sunday evening that it will cancel all non-urgent surgeries to ensure the hospital's resources for emergent health needs.

"As cases of COVID-19 increase, Ascension St. Vincent continues to diligently monitor the situation to ensure we are protecting our patients, employees and communities," St. Vincent said in a press release. "The following guidance was provided to our clinicians to assist in helping to manage their existing patients, protect against potential COVID-19 exposure and ensure the availability of resources to meet emergent health needs."

Starting Tuesday, March 17, all elective non-urgent surgeries will be canceled at Ascension St. Vincent Hospital Indianapolis.

Ascension St. Vincent says it is following the guidance of the CDC, Surgeon General, and American College of Surgeons which have recommended limiting elective services.

Examples of qualifying procedures include non-critical cardiac or neurosurgical procedures where deferral of care will not present risk of patient harm.

Examples of qualifying procedures include:

For patients having an outpatient procedure, the visitor will be allowed to stay with the patient until discharge.

Children 17 and younger will be permitted to have one parent or guardian stay with them post procedure.

Ascension Via Christi taking further steps to prevent COVID-19 – KFDI

Ascension Via Christi is taking further steps to prevent COVID-19 at their hospitals.

They have asked volunteers not to report for their shifts and to stay home until further notice. Additionally, Hospital-based health education classes, support groups and tours have been suspended.

On-site hiring events at the hospital have been suspended and all interviews will be conducted by telephone rather than in person. Changes are also being made to the hospital cafeterias.

Buffets, salad bars, condiments and salad dressings have been replaced with pre-packaged items. The utensil dispensers are also being replaced with no-touch systems.

Those patients with non-emergency, but urgent care needs are asked to consider using the virtual visit system through Ascension Online Care. The cost has been reduced to $20 through the month of March by usingthe code HOME.

Last week, Ascension Via Christi revised its visitor guidelines and began cancelling or postponing previously scheduled non-essential travel, meetings and large group activities, such as its Wichita Medical Mission at Home, an annual day of free healthcare scheduled for April 18.

Working with local and state public health officials, we are trying to limit the number of people in the hospital to further reduce patients, visitors and associates risk for exposure, said Sam Antonios, MD, chief medical officer for Ascension Via Christi hospitals in a news release to the media.

You think you got coronavirus: Whats it take to get tested in Austin? – austin360

Youve tracked your symptoms and you believe its not flu, allergies, strep or a cold. Can you get tested for the coronavirus?

Maybe. Local hospitals and doctors are following the national Centers for Disease Control and Preventions protocols and guidelines about who gets tested.

"We are adhering to the established protocols," says Dr. Maria Granzotti, chief medical officer at Ascension Texas.

That means they are looking at exposure risk factors such as whether someone has traveled in the last 14 days and where theyve traveled, or if they have been in direct contact with someone who has the virus as well as what their symptoms are.

"It doesnt help us to do inadvertent testing," Granzotti says. "We have to be very cognizant of who has the algorithm for testing to begin with."

They want to make sure that the tests are given to the right people, those with exposure to the virus, and not be used on people who dont have the risk factors.

The hospitals and doctors offices all have the swabs to do the test (its the same as the flu swab). What they dont have is the tests themselves. They are sending swabs from the people who meet the protocols to Austin Public Health right now. The tests then go to the CDC for confirmation.

Doctors are being told test results will be back within 48 hours, says Dr. Meena Iyer, the chief medical officer at Dell Childrens Medical Center of Central Texas.

While people wait, they will either go home to be isolated for 14 days until they know they are negative for the virus, or they will be in the hospital if they require that level of care.

Ascension Texas is evaluating commercial labs and "the appropriateness of their testing kits," Granzotti says.

If you think you might have the virus because youve been in contact with someone who has it or is being tested for it, call ahead to your doctors office so that your doctor can be ready to receive you and follow the protocols to keep the staff and other patients safe.

The doctors office will call the public health department to see if you meet the criteria to be tested.

If you cannot reach your doctors office, you can call the state public health COVID-19 hot line, 1-877-570-9779. You also can call Ascensions hot line for the coronavirus, 1-833-919-1680, which has nurses to answer questions and assess whether you need to be seen or tested.

Ascension also has online telemedicine in which you see a doctor virtually that doesnt require insurance. Download the app at ascension.org/onlinecare, and use the code HOME for a discounted $20 visit.

If you are having significant trouble breathing, call 911 instead of just showing up at the emergency room. This makes sure that the emergency room is prepared to receive you and that you get immediate treatment if you need it.

Right now, Ascension Texas hospitals are not seeing a lot of people flocking to the emergency room to get tested, which is a good thing.

"We are seeing a few and they are appropriately being identified," Granzotti says.

St. Davids HealthCare is also following the same protocol. On Friday, it released this statement after a presumptive case was acknowledged to be in one of its hospitals:

"As the COVID-19 scenario continues to unfold, it is important that we reserve our emergency departments for patients with emergent medical conditions. We are encouraging patients to access the most appropriate site of care for their medical needs."

The statement continues: "If a patient has flu-like symptoms or thinks they may have been exposed to COVID-19, they should call their primary care doctor or go to an urgent care clinic. If they are having trouble breathing or have some other type of related emergent condition, they should go to an emergency department."

Sportsman, rodeo events go forward in Ascension; Baton Rouge theater canceled amid coronavirus fears – The Advocate

The Louisiana Sportsman Show and the Bulls, Bands, and Barrels events this weekend at Lamar-Dixon Expo Center will go on as planned, as organizers urged visitors to take precautions against the novel coronavirus, a respiratory illness that has caused a global pandemic.

Theatre Baton Rouge, a Mid-City community theater troupe, had hoped Friday to go forward with with two plays this weekend, "Fox on the Fairway" and "A Doll's House, Part 2" but later announced those events would be canceled.

Kyle Rogers, general manager of Lamar-Dixon, issued a statement Friday morning saying the shows will go on but he also urged caution.

The events' "organizers are urging people to educate themselves on COVID-19 coronavirus, and take all necessary precautions," Rogers said in a statement.

The threat of the respiratory illness, which has already killed more than 5,000 people worldwide, has prompted the cancellation or postponement of public events locally and around the nation, including March Madness, the Southeastern Conference basketball tournament, the Masters golf championship, the Boston Marathon, the St. Patrick's Day parades in Baton Rouge and New Orleans, and a number of events put on by BREC.

LSU, Southern and other universities around the nation are ending in-person classes and switching to online learning for the spring semester, and all Broadway performances in New York City have also canceled through April 12.

As the number of people in Louisiana with the coronavirus rose to 19 on Thursday more universities are moving online and virtually all sports

The owner of the Louisiana Sportsman Show, which began Thursday, resumed Friday morning and lasts through Sunday, didn't return a message for comment that was left with a staffer early Friday.

Attempts to reach the organizer of the Bulls, Bands, and Barrels event set for Saturday at Lamar-Dixon were unsuccessful. An email sent through the event's general contact portal on its website hadn't been returned early Friday.

Bulls, Bands, and Barrels heads to Bossier City on April 4.

Jenny Ballard, Theatre Baton Rouge's creative director, said the 327-theater decided to cancel its plays after Gov. John Bel Edwards ended all events with more than 250 people and have been informing patrons and volunteers.

"Fox on the Fairway" had its last run this weekend -- Friday, Saturday and Sunday -- but all those shows have been canceled. "A Doll's House, Part 2" was opening this weekend, but its shows will be rescheduled once theater officials have a clearer idea about the extent of coronavirus's impact on public gatherings, Ballard said.

She added the theater has also postponed classes, auditions and other group gatherings for the next several weeks. Only necessary staff will be working at the theater.

"We want to keep everyone in the building safe, and this was the only thing we could do," Ballard said.

Though the tally of those in Louisiana with presumptive positive tests for coronavirus had reached 33 by early Friday, none of those people were in Ascension or East Baton Rouge parishes, state health officials said. The events are aimed, however, at drawing a regional audience. Many of the positives tests have been in southeast Louisiana.

Ascension Parish government officials, who own and operate the multi-use event complex near Gonzales, have referred questions about the Louisiana Sportsman Show to its organizers because it is a private event.

Southern University's spring semester schedule is changing moving forward in response to the novel coronavirus outbreak in Louisiana, school l

In statements about both events going forward this week, officials urged visitors to follow state health warnings, including covering one's mouth while coughing, washing one's hands and staying home if one is sick.

The warnings in the statement also discussed state and federal authorities' warnings about social distancing, saying visitors should avoid close contact with those who are sick, at least six feet.

It wasn't clear from the statements how organizers or visitors would be able to maintain social distance at the open public events or how visitors would know who is sick and, thus, avoid them.

In Louisiana, coronavirus testing had reached fewer than 100 people as of Thursday. The virus, which can be spread through airborne droplets or by lingering on surfaces, has an extended incubation period.

I was always interested in sciences, and some experiences at an early age with family illnesses introduced me to the healthcare world, Dr. Murr said. I wanted to be able to help others who were in need. Even if you cant fix the problem, reducing the suffering can still be a goal.

His initial thoughts as he started his education were to work as a family doctor in a small community. Yet as things progressed, he was exposed to new options. Other opportunities arose and life took a different turn.

Dr. Murr was able to participate in a joint program for his business degree while attending medical school. He met his wife, Dr. Indira Murr, an emergency medicine physician, in med school.

My continued training in family medicine allowed me to experience more of what being a doctor was really about, he admitted.

After he and his wife completed their residency programs in North Carolina, they decided to return to Oklahoma to be closer to family.

Dr. Murr is the son of Edgar and Laura Jeffers of Wagoner and Bobby and Barbara Murr of Little Rock, Ark., He grew up on a farm in Wagoner and graduated from high school in 1993.

While in Houston, Dr. Murr received his Master of Business Administration from Rice University. He then completed his residency with East Carolina University in Greenville, N.C.

He is board certified by the American Board of Family Medicine.
