New Research Finds that Sustained Acoustic Medicine (sam) Treatment Significantly Reduced Pain of the Neck and Shoulder – PRNewswire

TRUMBULL, Conn., June 16, 2020 /PRNewswire/ --ZetrOZ Systems, maker of wearable ultrasound device sam, is encouraged by a double-blind RCT study published recently in the Journal of Pain Researchby the Orthopaedic Foundation, Stamford, Connecticut,found that low-intensity continuous ultrasound treatment significantly reduced upper trapezius myofascial pain of the neck and shoulder. Results indicated that applying daily continuous ultrasound treatment of 18,720 joules delivered by a wearable sustained acoustic medicine (sam) device caused a clinically meaningful improvement in the global rate of change (GROC) scores for patients.

Low-intensity continuous ultrasound is an emerging high-dosimetry low-intensity continuous ultrasound-based therapy that facilitates accelerated tissue healing and treats myofascial pain. In this instance, low-intensity continuous ultrasound treatment was evaluated for chronic upper neck and shoulder pain in a randomized, multi-site, double-blind, placebo-controlled study.

The level 1 study followed the nationally recognized Consolidated Standards of Reporting Trials (CONSORT) guidelines that were used to recruit and conduct the clinical efficacy trial. Thirty-three patients with upper trapezius myofascial pain were randomized for treatment with active (n=25) or placebo (n=8) devices. Investigators and subjects were blinded to treatment groups. Patients self-reported their pain level daily, rating it from zero to 10 on the numeric rating scale (NRS).

If pain rating was more significant than or equal to three, the sam device (3MHz,0.132W/cm2,1.3W, four hours) was self-applied for total energy dosimetry of 18,720 joules per treatment. During the four-week study, the daily pain rating was recorded. If sam-treatment was delivered, pain before, during and after treatment was recorded along with the global rate of change (GROC). Statistical analysis was used to assess changes from the baseline and differences between treatment groups.

Patients treated with active sam treatment observed a significant mean pain reduction of 2.61-points for active (p<0.001), compared to 1.58-points decrease from baseline for placebo (p=0.087) - resulting in a 1.03-point significant decrease in the active group over placebo (p=0.003). The overall GROC was significantly higher in the active group at 2.84 points compared to the placebo group at 0.46 points (p<0.001).

Boston-based Akili Interactive Labs has secured the first-ever FDA approval to marketa prescription video game and, in the process, created a new class of treatment delivered in pixels instead of pills.

Federal regulators on Monday cleared Akili's debut game, "EndeavorRx," to treat ADHD in children between 8 and 12 years old. The game features racing scenes that may recall Mario Kart, for some parents, butEndeavorRx isn't all fun.

"No question it is a good experience, but it's designed to be very difficult and repetitive it has to be, to have the effect we need on the brain," said Akili Chief Executive Eddie Martucci. "We set expectations: There will be ebbs and flows, in terms of frustration or children being able to engage in it. It gets pretty tough."

The goal is to stimulate brain activity that gradually strengthens a child's attention and focus.Martucci said a typical, initial prescription will call for 30 minutes of gameplay, five days per week, for one month. Parents and doctors can then reassess and consider renewal.

In a series of clinical trials, Akili reported that roughly half of children showed improved attention after a month, according to their parents. About two-thirds made gains after two months.

Akili aims to make EndeavorRx available for download on Apple devices within a few months, said Martucci, who declined to disclose the game's price. He said it is unlikely that insurers will cover EndeavorRx, at first, "but we're very committed to working with the insurance industry and making sure that patients can get this covered."

That insurance coverage may be possible is a testament to the increasing acceptance of video games in mainstream culture. In the 1990s, video games were the scornful subjects of congressional hearings and were widely blamed for contributing to the Columbine school shooting.

Public attitudes about video games haven't completely reversed since then. Just last year,President Trump suggested a link between violent games and several mass shootings. But a body of research casts doubt on the existence of such a connection, and video games have gained a legitimacy that might once have seemed unthinkable.

Top gamers canearn millions in professional tournaments. Universities offer advanced degrees in game design. Now, the FDA says a video game can treat a medical condition.

"This FDA approval is a major milestone in the work of games and the recognition of it," said Casper Harteveld, who chairs Northeastern University's graduate program in game science and design. "I hope to see more of it."

Other video game makers could follow Akili, which spent nine years developing EndeavorRx and raised more than $140 million of venture capital, according to Crunchbase. The FDA has created a new regulatory classification for "digital therapies," making it easier for future games to earn the agency's approval.

Jeffrey Shuren, who directs the FDA's Center for Devices and Radiological Health, called Akili's game "an important example of the growing field of digital therapy and digital therapeutics." He added that "the FDA is committed to providing regulatory pathways that enable patients timely access to safe and effective innovative digital therapeutics."

Major study finds steroid reduces deaths in patients with severe Covid-19 – STAT

A cheap, readily available steroid drug reduced deaths by a third in patients hospitalized with Covid-19 in a large study, the first time a therapy has been shown to possibly improve the odds of survival with the condition in the sickest patients.

Full data from the study have not been published or subjected to scientific scrutiny. But outside experts on Tuesday immediately embraced the top-line results. The drug, dexamethasone, is widely available and is used to treat conditions including rheumatoid arthritis, asthma, and some cancers.

In a statement, Patrick Vallance, the U.K. governments chief scientific adviser, called the result tremendous news and a ground-breaking development in our fight against the disease. Scott Gottlieb, a former commissioner of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, called it a very positive finding in an interview on CNBC. I think it needs to be validated, but it certainly suggests that this could be beneficial in this setting.

Atul Gawande, the surgeon, writer and public health researcher, urged caution, tweeting, after all the retractions and walk backs, it is unacceptable to tout study results by press release without releasing the paper.

The study randomly assigned 2,104 patients to receive six milligrams of dexamethasone once a day, by mouth or intravenous injection. These were compared to 4,321 patients assigned to receive usual care alone.

In patients who needed to be on a ventilator, dexamethasone reduced the death rate by 35%, meaning that doctors would prevent one death by treating eight ventilated patients. In those who needed oxygen but were not ventilated, the death rate was reduced 20%, meaning doctors would need to treat 25 patients to save one life. Both results were statistically significant.

There was no benefit in patients who didnt require any oxygen. The researchers running the study, called RECOVERY, decided to stop enrolling patients on dexamethasone on June 8 because they believed they had enough data to get a clear result.

Dexamethasone is the first drug to be shown to improve survival in COVID-19, Peter Horby, one of the lead investigators of the study and a professor in the Nuffield Department of Medicine at the University of Oxford, said in a statement. He added that the drug should now become the standard treatment for patients with Covid-19 who need oxygen. Dexamethasone is inexpensive, on the shelf, and can be used immediately to save lives worldwide.

A different arm of the same study showed on June 5 that hydroxychloroquine, widely touted as a potential Covid treatment, had no benefit in hospitalized patients. Yesterday, based in part on those results, the Food and Drug Administration revoked an Emergency Use Authorization for using hydroxychloroquine in those patients.

From the start of the pandemic in March, researchers have focused on two different stages of Covid-19, which will likely require very different interventions. Some drugs are designed to directly combat the novel coronavirus, SARS-CoV-2, that causes the disease. The first medicine shown to have a benefit, remdesivir from the biotech firm Gilead Sciences, falls into this category, even though, because it must be given intravenously, it has been tested in hospitalized patients. Remdesivir shortens the course of infection, but has not been shown to save lives.

After patients have become profoundly sick, the problem starts to become not only the virus but their own immune system, which attacks the lungs, a condition called acute respiratory distress syndrome, or ARDS. For these patients, doctors have believed, they would need to dampen patients immune response even as they fought the virus.

Initially, excitement in this area fell on new and expensive drugs, such as Actemra, a rheumatoid arthritis drug from Roche that is used to treat a similar condition caused by some cancer immunotherapies. But a study in patients who needed oxygen showed no benefit from a similar drug, although another arm in sicker patients is continuing. The National Institutes of Health is conducting a study of an Eli Lilly pill targeting rheumatoid arthritis, an extension of the study that showed remdesivir has a benefit.

Dexamethasone, which reached the market 59 years ago, seemed an unlikely candidate to help these patients; it was seen as too crude a way of tamping down the immune system. In guidelines for physicians treating the disease, the NIH doesnt even mention the therapy.

Studies that are testing other medicines may now need to incorporate the use of the drug, which could complicate analyzing the results. A spokesperson for Regeneron, which is testing Covid-19 drugs focused on both attacking the virus and dampening the immune system, said the companys studies are written so that when a new medicine becomes the standard of care, it becomes available to patients in the trial.Some studies have shown a benefit for using dexamethasone in acute respiratory distress syndrome not related to Covid-19, although the benefit was smaller than in RECOVERY.

The result, should it hold up to further scrutiny, shows the benefit of the strategy of Horby and Martin Landray, the Oxford researchers who designed the study, leveraging the U.K. health system to start a study of multiple inexpensive potential Covid-19 therapies including hydroxychloroquine, dexamethasone, and also some older HIV medicines. Several months into the Covid-19 pandemic, two of the most important results come from this single study.

Neither of those results, however, have been scrutinized or published.

U of A Recognized by Exercise is Medicine for Efforts to Create Culture of Wellness on Campus – University of Arkansas Newswire

The University of Arkansas is one of only 166 universities and colleges around the world to be honored by the American College of Sports MedicineExercise is Medicineinitiative for its efforts to create a culture of wellness on campus.

Erin Howie Hickey, assistant professor of exercise science in the College of Education and Health Professions, is the advisor for the Exercise is Medicine Registered Student Organization at the U of A. The RSO, which is only two years old, earned a silver level designation from the Exercise is Medicine On Campus program.

Bryce Daniels, Hickey's graduate assistant who is also passionate about promoting physical activity, helped rally students to join the RSO.

"We were lucky to gain the support from driven exercise science undergrad students, the Health, Human Performance, University Recreation, the College of Education and Health Professions, and the Pat Walker Health Center to really start the Exercise is Medicine initiative at the University of Arkansas," Daniels said.

In the first year, the RSO developed a campus event called Exercise is Medicine Field day, which has been held every semester since then. In addition to Daniels, other students from the HHPR department who have led the charge on the U of A campus are Sally Barnes, Sarah Schwartz, Sarah Jenkins, Nathan Garcia, Kayla Accurso and Kylar Eagle.

"We partner with University Recreation to check out a variety of lawn games and have a college recess for students to enjoy between classes and promote physical activity," he said.

In the fall of 2020, students in the organization wanted to continue to grow the initiative across campus, so they created a websiteto keep the public and U of A community in the loop about events and the Exercise is Medicine research study.

"The research study investigates various health behaviors and health statuses of students, faculty, and staff at our university," Daniels said. "The website also links to our social media pages where informative videos of how to properly perform a variety of exercises and post work recovery techniques can be found."

Daniels said the organization will continue to work with Pat Walker Health Center to inquire about physical activity at each appointment, just like the would measure heart rate and blood pressure. The RSO would also like to grow the initiative by seeking student involvement from different departments across campus.

Students also envision spreading the initiative into the Northwest Arkansas community, he said.

Hickey is proud of the impact her students are making through Exercise is Medicine.

"They are gaining momentum, as shown by the silver recognition," she said. "They have been growing partnerships towards a long term goal of making our campus an example of how exercise truly is medicine."

Universities and colleges that earned gold, silver and bronze status were officially recognized in a virtual ceremony on Friday (June 12).

The national Exercise is Medicine On Campus launched its recognition program in 2014 to honor campuses that encourage faculty, staff and students to work together to improve the health and well-being of the community.

Robert L. Coleman, MD, FACOG, FACS, chief scientific officer of The US Oncology Network, discusses the utility of biomarkers in precision medicine.

The discovery of new elements in tumor biology is an exciting space, however, only certain elements can be labeled as predictive, explains Coleman. In other words, while the element may be associated with the prognosis of the disease, using a drug that targets this factor may not lead to any benefits in a patients treatment. To date, such cases have not been common, although they are certainly beginning to emerge, says Coleman.

PARP inhibitors have always demonstrated great success, thus, they are a perfect example of the utility of biomarkers in precision medicine, adds Coleman. PARP inhibitors allow investigators to measure homologous recombination deficiency (HRD) in several ways. First, they help them fully understand different types of alterations, such as germline mutations and somatic mutations.

Additionally, PARP inhibitors help investigators identify a reflection of having global HRD in the tumor, which may not be associated with one specific tumor, explains Coleman. All in all, this is a very simple way to analyze predictive biomarkers and their impact on precision medicine.

China has officially removed pangolin scales from its 2020 list of approved ingredients used in traditional Chinese medicine, multiple media outlets report.

According to the countrys state-run media, the latest version of Chinese Pharmacopoeia for 2020 no longer includes the pangolin, which most scientists say may have transmitted the coronavirus from bats to humans as an intermediary animal.

Pangolins are small mammals covered in scales that live in Asia and Africa. Its scales are sometimes used as an ingredient in traditional Chinese medicine as a way to boost fertility, according to associate professor of East Asian politics at the University of Houston-Downtown Peter Li, and its meat is also considered a delicacy by some.

The armadillo-like animal is protected under international law, but theyre still widely trafficked as one of the most illegally traded mammals on the planet, says the Environmental Investigations Agency, with an estimated 1 million sold in the past 15 years.

Just last year in Zhejiang, authorities arrested 18 smugglers and confiscated 23.1 tons of pangolin scales sourced from an estimated 50,000 creatures, according to Chinese state media.

Zhou Jinfeng, secretary-general of the China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Fund, said China's native pangolins have been all but wiped out. Over the past five years, Zhou and volunteers found only five where hundreds of thousands lived just three decades ago.

Recent conservation efforts have worked to protect the eight pangolin species found in Asia and Africa threatened by illegal international trade. Earlier this month, China ordered its highest level of protection also forbidding the raising of pangolins in captivity.

The June 5 order from the National Forestry and Grassland Administration did not explicitly mention the outbreak as a reason for the measure, but the timing appears to indicate it could be part of Chinas nationwide crackdown on the wildlife trade following the pandemic.

Trade in wildlife including bats and pangolins has been linked to so-called zoonotic diseases that leap from animals to humans.

Zhou said the new protections give groups like his the right to sue businesses and individuals selling pangolin scales. However, he wants to go a step further by releasing into the wild all captive pangolins in China and burning all confiscated pangolin scales, similar to how Kenya incinerated seized elephant tusks in a bid to end the illegal trade that continues to this day.

Research may lead to treatment advances for patients with immobilizing illness, injury

However, spontaneous pulses maintain activity in the disused circuits until the region becomes active again when mobility is regained.

A neuroscientists neon pink arm cast led him and fellow researchers at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis to discover previously undetected neuronal pulses in the human brain that activate after an immobilizing illness or injury.

The pulses appeared on MRI scans used to measure brain activity of the neuroscientist and, later, two additional adults whose arms were in casts. The researchers compared those MRI images with scans of the scientists before and after their arms were put in casts.

The scans showed that the brains main circuits responsible for movement in specific areas of the body disconnected within 48 hours of a person wearing a cast that encumbered movement in such an area. Also during this time, disuse pulses emerged to maintain neural activity and allow the main motor circuits to reactivate if and when mobility was restored through physical therapy.

The findings, published online June 16 in Neuron, offer clues to how the brains billions of neurons cells that transmit nerve impulses can rewire and restore pathways after injury or illness. Understanding just what is behind this resiliency may lead to new therapies for people with broken limbs or recovering from strokes or other immobilizing conditions.

Many scenarios exist in neurology in which a person doesnt use an arm or a leg and, consequently, related brain circuits for an extended period of time, said senior author Nico Dosenbach, MD, PhD, an assistant professor of neurology. In offering the best care to patients, its important to understand specifically what changes occur in brain function. Accurate understanding and mapping of these circuits may lead to advancements in treating patients who have lost use of their limbs.

In 2015, Dosenbach also an assistant professor of occupational therapy, of pediatrics, of radiology and of biomedical engineering wore the pink cast for two weeks despite the fact he had no injury requiring one. He aimed to collect high-quality data using brain-imaging techniques to evaluate neural networks that control movement.

Many of the patients Dosenbach treats at St. Louis Childrens Hospital suffer from conditions that limit mobility and cause them to favor one side of the body. A common treatment is constraint-induced movement therapy, also known as forced-use therapy, which immobilizes the dominant arm with a cast, forcing the child to use the impaired arm.

My goal was a better understanding of what my patients experience during therapy, although I acknowledge its more difficult for them because of their disabilities, Dosenbach said.

He also wanted to pinpoint a timeline of when individual neural changes occur. Commonly, scientists gather MRI data from dozens of people and average it. But I did not want to do that because everyones brain is anatomically different, and when MRI data are averaged, it all blurs together, Dosenbach said.

So Dosenbach decided to wear a fiberglass cast on his dominant, right arm. It stretched from his fingertips to just below his shoulder. It was pink, the favorite color of his daughter, Maike, then age 2.

He wore it during the hot, humid summer. It itched. It was awkward. He had to learn how to change a diaper with one hand.

To study brain activity, Nico Dosenbach, MD, PhD, an assistant professor of neurology at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, wore a fiberglass cast for two weeks.

Every day, he arose predawn to lie stiffly for 30 minutes for a resting-state functional MRI. He did this for the two weeks his arm was in the cast, as well as for the two weeks before and after.

During the six weeks, Dosenbach also wore accelerometers on both wrists to track the motor strength of his arms while performing basic tasks such as writing and moving objects.

It wasnt terrible, just unpleasant, Dosenbach recalled. But immediately, I noticed my right arm got worse, and my left hand got stronger. It was much faster than any of us expected.

The MRI data showed that brain changes occurred within 48 hours. Additionally, the researchers measured a decrease in grip strength in his right arm from 124 pounds of force to 90 during the two weeks he wore the cast.

Once my cast was removed, my right hand began to grow stronger, Dosenbach said. My left returned to its former role, too.

Surprised by such resiliency, Dosenbach and the studys first author, Dillan Newbold, a MD, PhD student, conducted the same experiment on two crazy-in-a-good-way scientists one who wore a fluorescent yellow cast decorated in doodles, the other a forest green cast that recalled childhood memories of camping.

Using a resting-state functional MRI scan, the researchers identified and measured the precise regions in each individuals brain that controlled each casted arm, examining more than 20 hours of recordings for each person. These techniques allowed the researchers to discover and characterize the pulses.

Their MRI data nearly mirrored Dosenbachs. The findings indicated that disuse of each arm caused affected neurons to disconnect from the rest of the brains motor system within two days. Newbolds analysis revealed that throughout the time the casts were worn, spontaneous pulses maintained activity in the disused circuits until the neurons began firing again when mobility was regained.

Finding the spontaneous pulses was incredible, Newbold said. People can be motionless, but their neurons seem to protect the brain from completely disengaging when its not being used. More research is needed, but this was the most exciting part of the study because of the clinical implications.

No drug has come more in the lay press in recent times than Hydroxychloroquine. It is in the news not because of its miraculous property, but because of the amount of controversy it has generated. The conflicting reports about this drug are an alternation between hope and despair in our fight against COVID19.

HCQ is a cheap generic drug that has been there for ages with its primary use in arthritis as an anti-inflammatory agent, but without credible evidence for use against viruses. India accounts for 70 percent of the global output, producing 10 times its domestic requirement. Notwithstanding the divided expert opinion on effectiveness, proving it beneficial has high stakes in business.

Higher are the stakes for Remdesivir, a new-on-the-block prohibitively expensive, patent-protected antiviral agent. Though its credentials are yet to be proven beyond doubt, the medical community is desperately hoping the drug would work. It has the potential for a windfall profit for Gilead Life Sciences. Humble Hydroxychloroquine may be a stumbling block between the potential and the real windfall.

What is interesting in this war is the turf itself. COVID-19, with all the panic notwithstanding, is but a mild disease with 90 percent of those tested positive not developing even a minor illness and only a tiny fraction actually needing any treatment. In an infection of this type, anything and everything can be proven to be effective unless subjected to intense scrutiny.

Leave aside torturing the data (a la Ronald Coase), even a small statistical jugglery can make a huge difference in such a setting. Some years ago Kotak Mahindra Bank ran a campaign 50% more interest on your savings account. It was actually a 6% vs 4% campaign. A 2% more can be shown as 50% more.

Bring this analogy to medical research. There are two groups of 200 patients each A on no drug (control) and B on drug (study). In the end, there are two adverse events in the control group and only one in the study group. It is actually a half percent real risk reduction that can also be called 50 percent relative risk reduction. This is just an example of a very honest research rephrased into smart marketing. And it is par for the course.

What is not, is deceit to discredit. This is precisely what happened to Hydroxychloroquine. On May 22, WHO issued an advisory to stop all clinical trials of Hydroxychloroquine, citing concerns of adverse side effects. The concern for adverse effects emanated from a preprint report in The Lancet (a journal of formidable standing in the medical world with a high impact factor) based on data provided by a dubious Illinois firm called Surgisphere that has neither the expertise nor the experience in the field of medicine.

Exposure on the credentials of the firm left many, including WHO and The Lancet, red-faced. In less than a fortnight, on June 2, WHO had to hurriedly rescind its earlier order, to be followed by The Lancet retracting thearticle on June04. You dont need a rocket scientist to deduce the role of business forces working behind the scene.

The issue before the medical fraternity is bigger than the effectiveness of a particular drug. It is more about our quest for truth. It relates to our raison dtre. The doctor, being a fiduciary, is bound ethically to act in the others (read patients) best interests. When truth is being manufactured in pursuance of a hidden agenda, the best interest of the patient is a natural casualty.

In 2005, Prof John Ionandis (presently Prof of Epidemiology at Stanford) highlighted the problem in his paper Why Most Published Research Findings Are False. Besides data manipulation, he highlighted the motive flagrant conflict of interest, financial and intellectual in that order. Business interest is prime mover, researchers can act in complicit, and at times active, collaboration out of both need and greed. It is now cancerous.

Richard Horton, editor of The Lancet has lamented his frustration, The case against science is straightforward: much of the scientific literature, perhaps half, may simply be untrue. Afflicted by studies with small sample sizes, tiny effects, invalid exploratory analyses, and flagrant conflicts of interest, science has taken a turn towards darkness. He goes on to add, The bad news is that nobody is ready to take the first step to clean up the system.

New England Journal of Medicine, unable to find authors without conflict of financial interest to write the review articles had to change its policy. Marcia Angell, editor NEJM for two decades is on record, It is no longer possible to believe much of clinical research that is published.

The situation for an ordinary practitioner is like the bewildered reader of Le Carres espionage novels, wondering till the end, who is crossing whom. Be it experts of repute, scientific journals, text books, good Samaritan institutions like WHO, or watchdogs like FDA none of them can come out clean on this slur.

Thanks to coronavirus, the helplessness of my fraternity being denied the basic entitlement of knowing the truth, has come to the fore. It is certainly not amusing.

Heritage in the Hat: The heart of North Railway – Medicine Hat News

The historic Hartley Block, located at 505 North Railway Street, is a brick two-storey building which pre-dates both the nearby Corona and Cecil Hotels. It was the first sizeable business building constructed on the north side of the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) tracks.

The Hartley Block was built in 1910 for Charles Henry Hartley, a CPR engineer who came to Medicine Hat in 1896. The building was designed by architect W.T. Williams and constructed by contractor M.C. Sackrider, at an estimated cost of $10,000. It contained fifteen suites on the upper level and two retail outlets on the lower level. Built before electricity was prevalent, gas lighting was installed for interior fixtures. The building boasted metallic (tin) ceilings, used extensively in the large departmental stores of the East.

In the fall of 1910, Mrs. Grace Chatterton leased the second storey as a boarding house, named Hartley Flats. It was a welcome addition during a time when the city was experiencing an economic boom and housing was considered inadequate. The A. J. Robinson dry goods store moved into the lower north outlet and H. Morrow, grocer, opened a business in the adjacent south outlet.

The most prominent retail business that operated out of Hartley Block was the C.P.R. Mens Store. In this location from 1912-1921, the business was owned and operated by Harold S. Ireland. After outgrowing the stores first North Railway Street location, Ireland relocated to the Hartley Block. He initially leased only the north side of the lower level. By 1918, the successful business had taken over the entire lower level. According to the Esplanade Archives, it is reported that during World War I, Ireland equipped the battalion from Medicine Hat with machine guns. The C.P.R. Mens Store actually, had no connection to the CPR. Ireland had obtained permission to use the CPR name from Supt. J.G. Cameron, then CPR Yard Master. By 1921, the prosperous business outgrew even the Hartley Block and moved to the substantial Lowe Block directly across from the CPR station. The C.P.R. Mens Store was in operation at this third and final location until 1963.

In 1914, Charles Hartley, on one of his out-of-town CPR runs, contracted typhoid fever, and died within three weeks. He was only 42. His wife Catherine took over the operation of the boarding house and the management of the retail leases.

Although most of the buildings historic red pressed brick exterior has been stuccoed over, the upper corbelled brickwork is intact. The Hartley Block, now occupied by the Mainliner Pub, is an integral part of the North Railway Street neighbourhood.

Medicine Hat Mural Fest running all summer this year – CHAT News Today

Organizer Jeff Goring said sponsors like McBrides Bakery and Sun City Ford were quick to reach out and offer support.

It was just cool to see the sponsors from last year some of the other sponsors really jump on board and say were willing to make something happen and we were able to pull it together, he said.

New murals have already been painted on the Sixth Avenue side of The Page & Whisker, at the old Towne Theatre and on Second Street across from Station Coffee Co.

The Page & Whisker mural was done by Chad Tyson, founder and CEO of The Paint Factory. He says he wanted to complement the age of the building, which is one of the citys oldest, and painted an old pub-style sign the reads The Hat.

Future murals will spruce up other downtown buildings over the summer, with two more planned for both July and August and more to finish up in September.

Goring, also known as Sonz1, says locations are still being locked down.

Working with building owners, making sure we got the right locations, make sure were not going over any historical locations. A lot of times with the locations we try to make sure we find old, kind of ones that have been tagged up or ones that are in high traffic areas that will really bring a benefit to the downtown.

Goring said this year he wants to highlight local artists, splitting the murals between them and artists he hopes to bring in from other parts of the country, like Tyson from Toronto.

We have some phenomenal artists here in the Hat, so were thankful for that, he said.

According to the first chapter of The Acts of the Apostles, after appearing to the Apostles on various occasions during a period of 40 days, Jesus was taken up in their presence and was then hidden from them by a cloud, a frequent biblical image signifying the presence of God. Although belief in the Ascension is apparent in other books of the New Testament, the emphasis and the imagery differ. In the Gospel According to John, the glorification described by the Ascension story seems to have taken place immediately after the Resurrection. The imagery of the account in the Gospel According to Luke is similar to that of Acts, but there is no mention of a period of 40 days. The Ascension of Jesus is mentioned in the Apostles Creed, a profession of faith used for baptism in the early church.

A distinctive feature of the feasts liturgy in the Western churches is the extinguishing of the Paschal candle, first lit on Easter, after the Gospel has been read, as a symbol of Christs leaving the earth. Despite the idea of separation indicated in this act, which might be expected to set a note of sadness, the whole liturgy of Ascensiontide, through the 10 days to Pentecost, is marked by joy in the final triumph of the risen Lord. One of the central themes of the feast is the kingship of Christ, and the theological implication is that the Ascension was the final redemptive act conferring participation in the divine life on all who are members of Christ. In other words, Christ was lifted up into heaven so that he might make us partakers of his Godhead.

In the European Middle Ages the peoples delight in the visual and dramatic found an outlet in various ritual practices that came to be associated with the feast. Popular customs included a procession in imitation of Christs journey with his Apostles to the Mount of Olives, as well as the raising of a crucifix or a statue of the risen Christ through an opening in the church roof.

In Christian art the Ascension is an old theme, appearing since the 5th century. The earliest version of the Ascension, which persisted in the West until the 11th century, shows Christ from the side, climbing to the top of the hill and grasping the hand of God, which emerges from a cloud above to pull him into heaven. The Apostles, assembled below, watch the event.

In the 6th century a different version of the Ascension was developed in Syria and was later adopted in Byzantine art. This version emphasizes Christs divinity, showing him frontally, standing immobile in a mandorla, or almond-shaped aureole, elevated above the earth and supported by angels. He holds a scroll and makes a gesture of benediction. A curious detail of this version is the regular inclusion of the Virgin Mary, who is not mentioned in the biblical account of the event, and St. Paul, who, on historical grounds, was not present. The inclusion of these figures has not been adequately explained, but they may represent, with the figure of St. Peter, an allegory of the church that Christ leaves behind. This type of Ascension, which follows the Roman tradition of representing the apotheosis of an emperor, often figured prominently in the monumental decoration of Byzantine churches as the emblem of one of the principal church feast days.

By the 11th century, the West had also adopted a frontal representation. In the Western version, however, the humanity of Christ is emphasized: he extends his hands on either side, showing his wounds. He is usually in a mandorla but is not always supported or even surrounded by angels; thus, he is no longer carried to heaven but ascends by his own power. In the 12th century this version of the Ascension had an especially prominent place in French Romanesque church decoration. The Ascension remained important as a devotional subject in the art of the Renaissance and Baroque periods, both of which retained the iconography of Christ displaying his wounds.

An Ascension ‘micro-hospital’ will be built at the former site of Waukesha’s last Sentry store – Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

WAUKESHA - The old Sentry store is gone, and in its place will stand a "micro-hospital," operated by a health care provider with an expanding footprint in Waukesha County.

In documents accompanying the agenda for the May 27 meeting of the Waukesha Plan Commission, Ascension Wisconsin is proposing tofill the 32,000-square-foot building in what was until recently the original Fox Run Shopping Center at St. Paul Avenue and Sunset Drive.

If approved, thefacility will become another provider of emergency care for Waukesha patients who, until now, had relied on ProHealth Care's Waukesha Memorial Hospital or urgent care facilities such as those offered by Advocate Aurora.

It's all part of a 13.4-acre redevelopment of the former shopping center, announced in October, into a 72-unit apartment complex and all-new commercial space. The plan is tied to a redevelopment district in which new taxes generated by the improvements would help pay for some of the upfront debt in the project.

At the May 27meeting, the plan commission, which ultimately approved final site plan and architectural review,considered the details of the medical office building itself, in which the main floor would feature the micro-hospital and a second floor filled with medical offices.

As presented in a letter to the city's planning department in April, the medical facility will be positioned on land that was previously home to Bob and Kurt's Sentry store, which was the last remaining Sentry store in the city of Waukesha. The store closed in January and has since been demolished.

In the new building, afirst-floor hospital will include eight emergency beds and eight in-patient beds, plus X-ray and CT scan rooms. The second floor was listed as "future" medical offices that would be accessed through a separate entrance.

Ascension, which regionally grew to encompass both the Columbia-St. Mary's Hospital and Wheaton Franciscan health care facilities, has recently tried to gain a greater foothold in the suburban areas outside Milwaukee, including in Waukesha County.Among locations proposed or approved in the past year include small hospitals in Menomonee Falls, Greenfield and Mequon.

Technically, the health care provider had already entered the city of Waukesha, where it opened an Ascension Medical Group office on Moreland Boulevard on the city's east side several years ago.

Ascension Wisconsin officials were not immediately available to discuss their expansion efforts and why Waukesha was added to the list of hospital sites.

From the city's standpoint, from a planning perspective, the focus isn't so much about the addition of a hospital and another medical office, but the design of the building itself and the property value increases resulting from redevelopment.

"I've always looked at from the standpoint about what the building would look like," Mayor Shawn Reilly said in a brief phone interview Thursday. "Not so much another hospital, but as another business coming to town. I'll leave it to others the number of hospitals (in the city) and stuff like that. That's always been contentious."

Of course, Ascension's neighbors will be unlike those whichpreviously occupied the former commercial parcel.

The mixed-use development proposed by partner firmsVJS Development Group LLC of Pewaukee, Bedford Development of Waukesha and Somerstone LLC of Brookfield will be greatly defined not by commercial tenants, but residential ones.

The plan is for 72 apartment unitswith rents ranging from roughly $1,000 to $1,500 monthly.

The apartment complex would be built close towhere the former 67,000-square-foot vacant strip mall sat deeper into the Fox Run property relative to Sunset Drive. The strip mall had been completely vacant for years, but once housed a liquor store, a craft shop and other retail businesses in its heyday.

The new development also calls for commercial space, but there areno firm plans onwhat and where those leased elements would be, at this point. In all, the property consists of five developable lots.

It all adds up to a projected $32.3 million increase in taxable property, based on a term sheet that's part of the tax increment financing district which was recently approved to enable redevelopment. For the mayor, that's an important bottom line.

"Very happy about that," Reilly said. "And that's one thing about the hospital itself. That building will be a draw for other businesses to locate next to it. I think we are going to end up with a very successful, major corner in the city of Waukesha."

Though the redevelopment abuts a newer section of the shopping center, most notably anchored by a Kohl's department store, it will have no impact on that commercial center, which is under separate ownership.

Lonzo Balls Ascension to Stardom with the New Orleans Pelicans – thepaintedlines.com

Lonzo Ball is blossoming into a real hooper, thanks to an opportunity to thrive in an organization committed to his development, and he deserves significantly more recognition. Although Zos career is in its infancy, he looks poised to lead a team on both ends of the floor. The defense he plays could warm any coachs heart, and his offense is so full of surprises that you cant look away when hes in action.

Hes a rhythmic shooter, so if theres something in the air that night, he can cash outfrom deep he droppedseventhrees on consecutive nights in the first week of March. Ball befriended Zion Williamson and the two of them quickly formed a quarterback and receiver connection on the court, which produces videogame-esque highlights. If Zion is the closest thing to Thanos on the basketball court, then Zo is an infinity stone in the gauntlet that makes Thanos so strong. Fair?

Seriously, Ball is throwing lobs that sail over defenses into the hands of Zion from over fifty feet away. Not only is Zo threading needles and dropping dimes, but hes also dribbling and hitting spots like a seasoned veteran.

Zo resembles a true pass-first point guard of yesteryear, with the addition of extended shooting range and multi-positional defense.

Zo expanded his game massively by diligently working on improving his jump shot with Pelicans Assistant Coach Fred Vinson. Through slight tweaks and an emphasis on consistency, Ball diversified his half-court game monumentally in one season.

In 2019 Ball attempted a career-high 6.5 three-pointers a game and dropped 139of them. Zo was just 26 three-point makes shy of beating the total in his rookie and sophomore seasons combined (165).

From deep this season, Zo posted a three-point percentage (38.3%) greater than that of Kemba Walker, Trae Young, and Donovan Mitchell three All-Stars. Additionally, Ball sank more shots from beyond the arc than Devin Booker, or his teammate, Brandon Ingram, did.

Over 40%of Zos points this season came by way of catch and shoot. When teams collapsed to play help defense or gave Zo enough space to get his shot off, he confidently pulled the trigger.

To no surprise, Zos highest volume of catch and shoot three-point attempts came in January and February. Through the first three months of the season, he attempted 108 catch and shoot three balls. When Zion returned to the court in January, the opportunities for Zo were abundant. He attempted 112 catch and shoot threes in those two months. Some teams had no choice but to play help defense against Zion in the deep post, which kept Ball loaded and ready to fire on a kick out.

In his first two seasons, Zo struggled to maintain a catch and shoot three-point percentage of 33% or higher. Zo took almost 100 more catch and shoot threes this season than he did in his previous two, and was money on 40%of them. That equated to more catch and shoot points than Devonte Graham and Khris Middleton scored (former 3PT Contestants).

There are still plenty of tools that Ball can add to his game, but his offensive improvement at such a young age is very encouraging.

Spreading the rock has always been a staple in Balls arsenal, but watching him facilitate is truly poetry in motion. Zo is one of, if not, the best outlet passers in the league, and his court vision is just unfair. He can patiently stall with the basketball until he finds a backdoor cutter, he swings the ball to a wing or corner like its a hot potato, and he can dump off with precision in a pick-and-roll.

New Orleans ran the pick-and-roll less frequently than 22 other NBA teams, but that can be a dangerous weapon if Zo can finish more efficiently at the rim and force his way to the free-throw line.

Zo shot less than 75 free throws in all three of his seasons not many for a downhill attacking point guard. Hes slowly becoming a more skilled finisher around the rim, though, and his first option is seemingly always passing.

In 2018, three Lakers topped Ball in the pecking order for touches. This season, Zo touched the ball more than anyone on the Pelicans and as a result, set new career-highs inassistsand assist points created. With the hiatus temporarily stopping play, he finished with the sixth-most passes made in the league and the 12th-most touches per game.

A player as unselfish and skilled as Zo does not always need to score to create offense. This makes him so integral for the Pelicans success. The modern game of basketball rewards pace and space, and Zo is largely helping New Orleans with both.

This season, Ball defended core players for almost half of his defensive minutes played.

Monstrous defenders such as Rudy Gobert, Giannis Antetokounmpo, and Anthony Davis matched up against core players equally as frequently.

Balls sophomore campaign concluded before All-Star weekend, yet he finished with the 7th highest percentage of minutes spent defending core players.

At 66, Ball is a unique enough player to both facilitate and pester opposing guards. Though he most commonly defends primary creators, playing alongside Jrue Holiday benefitted Balls game immensely.

Contrary to his two seasons in Los Angeles, Ball guarded opposing teams shooting guard more than any position this season. New Orleans defensive flexibility enabled Ball to occasionally guard forwards, defend on the wing, or play on-ball against primary playmakers.

For example, New Orleans deployed a lineup featuring Holiday,J.J. Redick, and Ball for 146 minutes in 2019 the 2nd most of any lineup combination. There, the scheduled matchup likely dictates what player Ball should defend. New Orleans also experimented with smaller lineups in February and March, which kept Balls defensive role fluid.

Much like Holiday, Ball plays defense with great balance and controls his body exceptionally well. Hes able to apply smothering ball pressure and dance with his opponent way beyond the perimeterwhile avoiding foul trouble.

In the half-court, Ball uses his speed to stay in the pocket of his opponent and pounce when he reads passing lanes. For the third straight season, Ball deflected 120+ passes. Plenty of his forced turnovers come on-ball, but he works tirelessly off-ball to maneuver around screens and disrupt offensive flows.

In an offensively oriented league predicated upon three-point shooting, Ball usually devotes all of his attention to his assignment. He doesnt have the luxury of cheating off of his assignment and anticipating as much as other positions (because most guards can shoot the rock) which makes his defense even more commendable. Off-ball, he can swipe on the weak side, lurk and intercept passes like a cornerback, and slap a grown mans shot into the fourth row.

In just 56 games this season, he blocked two fewer shots than the 610 Ben Simmons and totaled 80 steals. James Harden, DeAaron Fox, Kyle Lowry to name a few turned the ball over more times than they scored when defended by Ball.

A measure of Balls individual defense is how tough he makes it for opponents to earn their baskets in the half-court.

Hundreds of players defended the isolation for at least 20 different possessions; Ball surrendered the 8th-lowest field goal percentage to opponents in 2019.

Zos game has grown multi-dimensional, and yet hes just scratching the surface of what he can accomplish. Most of what comes naturally for him, other players desire. Timing, pace, proficiency handling the basketball, and unselfishness are just a few of the things that make Zo so special at 22-years-old.

He demonstrated that he can consistently knock down shots from deep this season, similar to how he did at college. That was previously the main part of his game that did not translate well. Adding capable shooting to his game which already includes facilitating expertise and defensive activeness could be a lethal concoction.

If New Orleans retains its core for the foreseeable future, Zo will not have to carry a heavy scoring load the task will be bigger. He will have to continue to elevate his teammates games by leading the bunch on both ends of the floor.

The most daunting thing about Lonzo Ball is that he is only just beginning.

The 2016 flood all but halted new neighborhoods in Ascension. Now an 89-home project moves ahead – The Advocate

GONZALES Susan and Richard Jordan have lived on family property off La. 931 in the Lake area of eastern Ascension Parish for 39 years. In August 2016, they avoided flooding by just inches.

The couple, who live on land that Susan's family homesteaded in the 1800s, said that during the great flood, water several feet deep flowed behind their home and across their road. The Amite River backwater flooding had overtopped parish levee systems and pushed up Henderson Bayou.

"We saw the water rushing across there," Susan Jordan said.

The Jordans and several of their neighbors who did flood in 2016 showed up before the parish Planning Commission this week to make the kind of case that had become a regular occurrence in the first year or so after the great flood: opposition to new housing in low-lying areas that flooded severely nearly four years ago.

In 2017 and 2018, public uproar over new housing was followed by a slowdown in new projects, new limits in how much dirt builders can use to raise property so it is less susceptible to flooding and new home elevation requirements.

On Wednesday, the project the Jordans and their neighbors fought, the 89-home Hidden Lakes neighborhood, sailed through the commission without opposition.The developmentwill sit on 188 acres of pasture, woods and wetlands that flooded four years ago behind the Jordans' home.

They opposed the plan over drainage concerns, traffic on narrow and winding La. 931, and the one-way entrance to the large site.

The project is the first new residential neighborhood to be approved in Ascension Parish since at least January 2019 and is the first to be approved under the parish's new rules on using dirt to elevate homes, said Jerome Fournier, parish planning and development director.

Approval of the neighborhood preliminary plat, an important early but final step toward home construction, is also the first under new Parish President Clint Cointment, who took office in January and campaigned on controlling growth.

Hidden Lakes has unique wrinkles that came after negotiations between the parish and Chris Ingram, a seasoned Ascension developer building the project.

He will donate nearly 65 acres of his site to the parish for recreational land after plans to make that land a regional floodwater storage lake were deemed not feasible. Also, in a departure from compact construction patterns in Ascension since the housing bust of the late 2000s, all of the lots in Hidden Lakes will be around an acre to as much as five acres in size, Ingram's engineer said.

The commission also agreed to allow the development to have open ditches and not have curb and gutter roads as cost-saving measures for the spread-out development.

In the wake of the 2016 flood, which inundated thousands of homes in Ascension, the dirt fill practices of developers came under harsh criticism. Longtime homeowners argued the rules for new construction were sacrificing older, lower homes for the safety of newer homes built on several feet deep of dirt that displaced floodwater.

Developers and engineers disputed these claims, saying detention ponds mitigated the impact. But former and current council members and the administration of former Parish President Kenny Matassa, who left office in early 2020, settled on a compromise.

New construction could use no more than 3 feet deep of dirt fill, but homes would have to be at least 2 feet above the predicted height of a 100-year flood, 1 foot higher than the old standard.

Though the ideas were adopted, the new fill limits and height standard prompted strong push back from the developers and Matassa for a time. They meant that, in some of Ascension's lowest areas, builders would have to find other, more costly ways to raise homes besides just dirt, such as with piers or cinder block wall foundations, known as chain walls.

The land where Hidden Lakes is planned is one of those low areas. Much of the land is below the predicted height of the 100-year flood, which is a flood that has a 1% chance of happening in any year and is a minimum benchmark for flood insurance requirements.

In an interview, Ingram explained that the first third of each lot in Hidden Lakes extending out roughly 200 feet from the center of the road will have dirt fill while the back two-thirds of each lot will remain at natural elevation. Wetlands will be avoided as much as possible.

Homes that need to go higher than 3 feet to meet the new elevation requirements will be built on chain walls on top of the fill. Deric Murphy, Ingram's engineer, explained to the commission that flood risk was being mitigated by the low home density, the land set aside for recreation and several detention ponds.

"This is gonna be as low impact of a development as you can probably imagine," he said.

In 2017, the U.S. Geological Survey reported that the August 2016 flood in that area surpassed a 500-year flood. It has a 0.2% chance of happening in any year, bigger than the 100-year flood against which minimum federal housing elevation standards are set.

When asked in a later interview, Murphy said he'd have to check closely to see if any homes in Hidden Lakes would flood if another August 2016 occurred once built to Ascension's new, higher elevation requirements.

USGS found high water marks from August 2016 that show flooding in the Lake area reached between 3.2 feet to 7.6 feet above ground level, or 14.3 feet to 16.9 feet above sea level. The bottom floors of homes in Hidden Lakes will be around 16.5 feet to 17 feet above sea level.

The Jordans said the only reason they didn't flood in 2016 is they built six inches above Ascension's old elevation standards to 16.5 feet but worry what impact Hidden Lakes will have on them and their neighbors the next time the water comes up.

On Wednesday, parish officials and Ingram also cut a deal for the sewer system. Due to the large lot sizes, Ingram was not required to install a neighborhood-scale sewer system but was proposing individual treatment units for each lot, as a cost-saving measure.

Parish officials have separately been trying to consolidate Ascension's private and home treatment systems to improve water quality. In exchange for installation of a community system, which the parish will build and own through impact fees Ingram pays, he received eight more lots from the 81-lot plan he originally put forward, Fournier told the commission.

"We would like to have one discharge point (for treated wastewater) instead of 81 discharge points, so I think that's a real advantage to the parish to be able to reach that agreement" with the developer, Fournier said.

MacKenzie has more than 30 years ofexperience leading health care organizations undergoing transformation, strategic repositioning and new service innovation, according to a statement. The charismaticMacKenziewas CEO of Sarasota Memorial Hospital for close to a decade, where she was one of the region's most well-known health care leaders. She also oversaw SMH during a major growth period, going from an operating budget of around $400 million in 2005 to over $500 million by 2014, when she left for another executive positionin her home state of Michigan.

In MichiganMacKenzie was asenior executive of Ascension, where she had oversight for the Michigan market of 15 hospitals and health systems with profit and loss responsibility for $3.7 billionin operating revenue, according to the statement, released fromFirst Step of SarasotaBoard of DirectorsChair Dana Keane.Michigan was one of the largest markets for Ascension, with 26,000 associates and 5,300 physicians serving one of every eight Michigan residents at over 130 care sites.

Prior to SMH MacKenzie spent25 years at the Detroit Medical Center, a $1.6 billionhealth care system as interim system CEO, as well as COO and president of Sinai Grace Hospital, Harper-Hutzel Hospital and Karmanos Cancer Institute. MacKenzie alsohas board experience in several states with public, elected and nonprofit boards.

MacKenzie succeeds Dave Beesley, who had guided First Step of Sarasotafor over 20 years.

Gwen is a respected colleague and friend and I couldnt be more pleased she will be taking over the helm," says Beesley in the statement. "I will continue to be helpful to her in any way I can to create a seamless transition of leadership.

Gov. John Bel Edwards board and commission appointments from Livingston, Ascension and East Feliciana parishes ( – The Advocate

On June 12, Gov. John Bel Edwards announced his appointments to several Louisiana boards and commissions.

Richard W. Booth, of Jackson, has been appointed to the Life Safety and Property Protection Education Board. Booth is the regional sprinkler account manager for S&S Sprinkler Company and will serve as a representative of a technical endorsement-fire sprinkler. The Louisiana Life Safety and Property Protection Advisory Board serves to create initial and continuing education requirements for individuals licensed to perform life safety and property protection contracting.

Ronald J. Schillace, of Hammond, has been appointed to the Firemans Supplemental Pay Board. Schillace is a firefighter with more than 25 years of experience and will serve at-large. The Firemans Supplemental Pay Board is responsible for determining the eligibility of firemen to receive supplemental pay.

Darryl D. Smith, of Hammond, and Robert D. Watkins, of Robert, have been appointed to the state Mineral and Energy Board. Smith is the president of Louisiana One Holding and Alley Square and will serve as a public member-at-large. Watkins is an accountant and vice president at Wegmann, Dazet and Co., and will serve as a public member-at-large.

The state Mineral and Energy Board is responsible for leasing state lands for mineral exploration and development. The board reviews existing mineral leases for proper maintenance, development, and operations; reviews payments pursuant to state leases; and reviews documents agreements affecting state leases, including unitization, compromise, consent letters and assignments.

Iva L. Tullier, of St. Amant, has been appointed to the Louisiana Commission for the Deaf. Tullier is a teacher at Motiva Enterprises and will serve as a parent of a deaf person. The Louisiana Commission for the Deaf provides accessibility services for persons who are deaf, deaf-blind or have hearing loss or speech impairment to gain equal access to any public or private service.
