NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) Some schools are getting extra creative to hold graduation ceremonies during the coronavirus pandemic.

New Rochelle High School seniors knew COVID-19 would prevent them from having a traditional graduation ceremony, but that didnt stop senior Jake Egelberg and his classmates from creating a memorable one through the video game Minecraft.

We kind of grew up with the game, said Egelberg in an interview with CBS2s Hazel Sanchez. In a way, everything has come full circle because now were graduating high school and we once again got into Minecraft and all played together building this project that allowed us to graduate in game.

Egelberg teamed with about 10 students, most from the schools science research program, and block by block created a virtual New Rochelle High School. Seniors and their families could log in to the virtual world for an unofficial graduation ceremony, which included live speeches from teachers, the class salutatorian and valedictorian.

Unconventional circumstances have sparked creativity across the country. There was a fast-paced graduation on a NASCAR track and a slow-and-steady one on a ski lift.

Here in the tri-state area, graduates from seven high schools in Rockland County are being recognized at Congers Lake Memorial Park, with a tribute path lined with their photos.

Seniors at Franklin High School in Somerset, New Jersey, will get a headset to graduate in a unique virtual reality experience. Eighth graders at High Mountain School in North Haledon Middle School were treated to a graduation parade.

I thought it was a very cool idea, said Madeline Manning, an eighth grade graduate.

So we wanted to make sure we celebrate, and then we thought of essentially bringing the stage to the students, said Lind.

I was upset that I wont be able to have a real graduation because you only experience eighth grade once, said Bianca Aliana, an eighth grade graduate.

But its good that we still get to do something, said Liliana Cacciola, an eighth grade graduate.

I spent the last two weeks reading up on ants, learning and re-learning all manner of intriguing bits about their biology and the diverse ways their behaviors impact human interests. And now, with my fingers dead on the keyboard, Ive no clear idea what to write about them, how to proceed to the next paragraph.

What can you say that isnt already common knowledge without having to delve into the technical details that only specialists care about? How do you discuss the important differences between one miniature household intruder and the next without making use of that specialists arcane knowledge and his or her high-powered microscope?

A big part of the problem is that there are so many species of ants a 2019 study reported 143 forms for just Ohio, and worldwide over 22,000 species have been named. Each species has its own intriguing story. Where do you start?

So todays column willjust be a hodgepodge of ant and ant-related trivia that has somehow caught my attention.

At 91 years of age, , E. O. Wilson, Harvard emeritus professor in entomology, is one of the worlds best known living scientists. Certainly it would be a rare biologist who is unfamiliar with his name. Odd thing, perhaps, for an Alabama boy who first gained professional recognition for his work in myrmecology, the study of ants.

Fair to say he went on to explore a few other areas of interest, founding such thriving fields of study as island biogeography, sociobiology and biodiversity conservation along the way. But through it all, Wilson has remained an ant guy at heart, even receiving his second Pulitzer Prize in 1990 for his book, "The Ants." (His first Pulitzer was for On Human Nature in 1978).

In that book (co-authored with Bert Hlldobler), Wilson estimated that the biomass (accumulated weight) of all of the worlds ants would match that of the planets human population. In the tropics, ant biomass can account for 15 to 25 percentof the total biomass of all terrestrial animals taken together, from the smallest mite to the largest predatory cat.

The Ohioline OSU Extension Factsheet Ants In and Around the Home offers a brief discussion of 13 of the most commonly encountered species in Ohio (and throughout much of the Northeast). Some of their common names are anatomically descriptive, like the little black, larger yellow and small honey ants.

Other names suggest a preferred habitat like the cornfield, lawn and pavement ants, or a notable behavior like the carpenter, thief, acrobat, Alleghany mound, odorous house, pharaoh and crazy ants. The Factsheet (Google Ohioline ants) provides concise descriptions of each of these species after providing a few tips on how to distinguish an ant from a termite.

Even without a hand lens, ants clearly appear to have a constricted waist between their thorax (middle part) and abdomen. Termites have no such narrowing between thorax and abdomen. Also, ants antennae are clearly elbowed while termite antennae are straight.

At certain times of the year, ants and termites both produce flying reproductive (males and females). The front wings of ants are notably larger than the back ones, while in termites theyre the same size and shape.

Id add that in most termites, the nonreproductive castes are soft-bodied and pale in color while ants typically have a hard, pigmented exoskeleton. Though not readily visible, all the workers and soldiers in an ant colony are female while both castes are a 50:50 mix of genders in a termite colony.

While a lot of the species that cause us headaches by invading our homes and businesses are omnivores feeding on a wide array of edibles, most have a preferred food type plant matter, sugars, fungi, grease, meat, seeds.

That last one involving seeds has an interesting spin. Many species of plants around the world have come to depend on ants for dispersing their seeds, a phenomenon known as myrmecochory. Such plants generally attach a fleshy structure (an elaiosome) rich in lipids and proteins to their seeds, which attracts ants. Workers carry the seeds back to the colony where the elaiosomes are fed to their larvae and the seed is discarded.

A quite different form of mutualism (both parties benefiting) is seen in the relationship many species of ants have developed with aphids and other plant sap-feeding insects. These insects secrete a sugary waste product as they feed, delicately referred to as honeydew.

The way it commonly works is that an aphid gives up a drop of the liquid when an ant strokes its back with its antennae. In return for this energy resource, ants protect their herd from predators, often carrying the aphids into their colony at night and bringing them out to fresh feeding sites the next day.

Ohio has three species of fire ants, small but highly aggressive, reddish-brown ants of open areas that deliver a potent sting when disturbed. But we do not have the problematic red imported fire ant (originally from South America) that has caused so much trouble in the Southeast.

And we also dont have another problematic invasive, the Argentine ant, which has formed super-colonies eliminating native ant species throughout the world in areas with a warm, dry climate. The aptly named Californian large colony extends 560 miles along the California coast.

But thats peanuts compared to an Argentine ant mega-colony in Europe reported to wrap some 3,700 miles around the Mediterranean.

Addressing the B2B void between product data and online sales – DigitalCommerce360

Managing product information in a way that supports the customer journey with a good purchasing experience is a widely accepted strategy, but many B2B companies lack the technology to make it happen, a new survey finds.

A product experience that ensures buyers find the product data they expect directly affects the overall customer experience, says a survey of B2B professionals from Akeneo, a provider of product experience management software.

Key to creating a satisfying product experience is providing buyers with accurate, consistent, and compelling product information, as well as product descriptions and data that educate and inspire the buyer, the survey says.

The survey of 1,600 B2B professionals, which was conducted in March by 3GEM Research on behalf of Akeneo, reveals that 41% of respondents consider product information on a suppliers ecommerce site a top priority when it comes to a satisfying customer experience. Another 48% of respondents consider product information to be highly important.

Nevertheless, 54% of suppliers surveyed say they lack dedicated solutions for managing product data and the product experience. In addition, 56% say they could increase sale conversions, and 45% say they could charge more for the same product or service, if they offered a better product experience.

Akeneo surveyed B2B professional across multiple industries, including manufacturing, retail, consumer goods, automotive, and health and pharmaceutical, in seven countries. The survey took place between March 4 and 25, before widespread shelter-at-home orders placed a premium on B2B ecommerce orders during the coronavirus pandemic. Job titles of respondents include ecommerce manager, marketing manager/director, multi-channel director, omnichannel manager and IT director. The size of the companies interviewed ranged from as few as 100 employees to 5,000 or more.

When asked what criteria other than price they think is key to B2B buyers purchasing decisions, 61% of respondents cited product and brand values, such as product origin and ecology; 54%, speed and efficiency; 42%, personalized purchasing experience; 40%, localized experiences, such as offering regional products; and nearly 33% cited a consistent omnichannel experience. Respondents could cite more than one criterion.

When it comes to using product information/data in their marketing campaigns and social media, 57% of respondents said they do so in both channels; 23% said they only use it their marketing campaigns; and 10% only in social media.

One way for B2B sellers to improve the product experience on their ecommerce site is to adapt product information to specific sales channels and/or geographies. More than 61% of respondents say they adapt product information by sales channel and geographic location of the buyer; more than 22% say they do so by sales channel; and more than 8% say they do so by geography.

New technology that respondents said they expect to install within the next 12 months to enhance the customer experience include voice-controlled search technology (52.8%), live chat (44.8%); and AR/VR (augmented reality/virtual reality) technology (39.%)ich delivers virtual experiences that allow customers to see and feel a product. Respondents could cite more than one technology in their answer.

Despite efforts by B2B sellerss to improve the product experience, several challenges to successfully doing so remain. The biggest hurdle, the survey says, is achieving efficient team productivity and collaboration on product data management (44.8%). Timely launching of new products and new product information is the second-highest hurdle, according to more than 40% of respondents.

Managing video, images and content to effectively merchandise products is the third-highest hurdle, 38.5% of respondents say. Other hurdles include standardizing product data (36.6%), collecting product data into a central repository (36.1%), syndicating and publishing data to multiple channels (31.3%), and localizing product information (29.4%). Again, respondents could provide more than one answer.

Another challenge to successfully managing the product experience is the reluctance of B2B sellers to implement product information management and product experience management solutions. 54% of respondents say they use neither technology.

When asked how investment in the product experience would lift their business, 46% of B2B businesses say they could accelerate cross-selling and upselling opportunities, and 32% say they could decrease product returns, according to the survey.

To successfully improve the product experience on their ecommerce site, Akeneo says buyers must first understand the customer journey. Next, suppliers must enrich product information and contextualize product information for specific sales channels and geographies, optimize product information processes, and foster better collaboration internally. Finally, sellers need to use the right technology to enhance their product experience.

Is the ‘second wave’ another coronavirus hoax? – The Highland County Press

The Covid-19 virus will not bother people who are protesting this injustice, they said. The virus only attacks people leaving their homes to protest the stay-at-home orders.

Now, after thousands of businesses many of them black-owned have been reduced to rubble and innocent people in the inner cities no longer have anywhere to shop for the basic necessities of life, the mainstream media has backed off of its non-stop coverage of the protests. Suddenly last week they all simultaneously embraced a new fear story to terrify the masses: a second wave of coronavirus was among us. It was targeting those states that dared to open up their economies and begin a return to relatively normal lives.

Texas, Florida and California were singled out to scare the rest of the country into thinking that if you dare leave your homes you will catch coronavirus and die. There was a spike in coronavirus cases they claimed. Funny, just a month or so ago they were demanding that we massively increase testing, which would produce just that spike in coronavirus cases they are now using to scare authorities into reinstating the incredibly destructive stay-at-home orders.

In the county here in Texas that includes Houston, the young judge who somehow seized the power to shut down the third largest city in the United States warns us that she may again shut down Harris County to fight this second wave of cases. She even threatened to again pour millions of dollars into a field hospital at a Houston football stadium that did not see a single patient in the first wave of coronavirus. Its hard not to wonder which politically-connected companies are reaping millions in contracts for an obviously un-needed hospital. Thousands of hospital beds in Houston are vacant, while cancer patients have been refused their screenings and desperately needed treatments.

As former Congressman David Stockman points out, the actual coronavirus numbers do not in any way support the media assertion that a second wave of infection is cresting over Texas. Stockman informs us that in Texas the reported infected case rate of 256 per 100,000 is just 10 percent of the real hot spot rate of 2,477 per 100,000 in the five boroughs of New York City; and its mortality rate of 6.2 per 100,000 population is just 3 percent of New York Citys 196 per 100,000 rate.

There are no hot spots in Texas. Its just more media hype.

Its funny that they dont dare mention Georgia, which has also opened its economy and has seen no spike at all.

The same people who were demanding more testing are now screaming that we must shut the economy down again because these tests which are notoriously unreliable are showing more coronavirus cases. This is a disease that 99.9 percent of the people who are infected with survive! But 40 million people out of work and the thousands of lives that will end due to the shutdown are never mentioned.

There is something else going on here, and it is in no way related to public health.

In 1988, a certain congressman from Texas ran for president on a platform of bringing home our troops from around the world. Even then, more than 30 years ago, U.S. troops were in over 100 countries, and tens of thousands were still in Europe.

That Texas congressman was my father, Ron Paul, who 20 years later ran again for the presidency and was still calling to begin bringing American troops home from around the world an absolute necessity if the budget is ever to be brought under control. Were going broke and we still have 75,000 troops in Germany?

In his best-selling book, "The Revolution," my father wrote: We can either withdraw gracefully, as I propose, or we can stay in our fantasy world and wait until bankruptcy forces us to scale back our foreign commitments.

This month, President Trump called for a modest reduction of American troops in Germany, reducing them from 34,500 to 25,000 (a great start that will hopefully lead to further reductions there). The Republican neocon caucus responded exactly as you would expect. Youd think the Berlin Wall was still in place and two million Russians were about to invade Germany. Utter nonsense.

With the Cold War now 30 years moribund, the hysteria over removing troops is ludicrous. Meanwhile the very real threat of bankruptcy and menacing debt grows each day. Just this year, the United States will add $4 trillion to the national debt. Can the Germans afford to defend themselves? Without question. Germany actually balances its annual budget every year.

Yet, the U.S. still has about 170,000 troops in about 150 countries at great expense in both lives and treasure. Often that puts our soldiers on the front lines of civil wars whose origins we barely even comprehend. The U.S. also becomes allied with governments, such as Saudi Arabia, that are barbaric, despotic, and anti-American. And yet the cycle continues because the war caucus vows to never, ever let our troops come home.

President Trump is also advocating ending our nations longest war in Afghanistan. It couldnt happen soon enough. The American taxpayer is paying $50 billion a year to build roads and bridges in that country, while our own nations infrastructure crumbles.

President Trump has also discussed having fewer troops in South Korea, and has actually forced Seoul to pay more for our presence. Possibly the best aspect of the Trump presidency, though, has been his willingness to challenge the bipartisan neoconservative consensus on forever war.

Yet critics, including myself, will admit the Trump presidency has not always practiced what its preached here. While Trump has consistently advocated for fewer troops in Europe, he has re-introduced U.S. troops into Saudi Arabia, a mistake that eventually will lead to more war or terrorism or both.

But today, give credit where credit is due. Trump, the disrupter, is right to bring the troops home. And I say dont stop until we once again have a military whose primary job is to defend America.

COVID-19: Oklahoma numbers continue to spike, with 450 new cases, 2 more Oklahomans’ deaths announced Thursday – Tulsa World

Oklahoma saw a 5.1% jump in the number of COVID-19 cases Thursday, with 450 new cases and two additional deaths.

Thursdays numbers, which include the highest daily count since the pandemic began, leaves the state with 9,354 cases overall, with more than 1,100 of those coming since Sunday.

Thursdays numbers, which were delayed from their regular 11 a.m. release time because of reported technical difficulties, continue a sharp upward trend going back to late May.

Tulsa County has 120 additional cases, up more than 6%, and one more death, according to state data.

Concern remains about the potential for President Donald Trumps campaign rally at the BOK Center on Saturday to spread the virus further.

At a news conference Wednesday, Tulsa Health Department Director Bruce Dart said the potential for super spread exists with nearly 20,000 people in an enclosed arena.

Whenever people come together from outside and go back, theres always potential for a super-spreader event, Dart said. And some people, unfortunately, just spread the virus more efficiently than others, which results in super-spreader individuals, and so of course thats a concern.

Thursdays continued spike saw Tulsa Countys seven-day rolling average of new cases rise to 81.9. There are 654 active cases in the county, according to Tulsa Health Department data.

Statewide hospitalization numbers saw an increase in confirmed COVID-19 patients, with 76 of 129 of those in intensive care. Another 82 people remain under investigation for possible COVID-19, with 20 of those in ICU, according to state data.

Reforming our criminal justice system and increasing its focus on rehabilitation have been among my top priorities during my time in Congress. While I'm greatly encouraged by legislation such as the First Step Act passing, I will keep working for change, as you can see from my latest update below!

Dr. Rand Paul Introduces the Justice for Breonna Taylor Act

In March 2020, Louisville resident and EMT Breonna Taylor was killed during a police raid on her home, which was conducted under the authority of a no-knock warrant.

Earlier this week, I held a call with Breonna Taylors aunt, Bianca Austin, Game Changers Executive Director Christopher 2X, Luke Whitehead, and others fighting for criminal justice reform, and I reiterated my long-standing commitment to ensuring a just and fair system that respects all Americans rights. After talking with Breonna Taylors family, Ive come to the conclusion that its long past time to get rid of no-knock warrants, whichallow law enforcement officials to forcibly enter a home without announcing their authority or purpose.

On Thursday, I introduced the Justice for Breonna Taylor Act (filed in the Senate as S. 3955), a bill that wouldeffectively end no-knock raids in the United States.

My legislation would require federal law enforcement officers to provide notice of their authority and purpose before they could execute a warrant. This would also be the case for any state or local law enforcement agency that receives Department of Justice funding.

Dr. Rand Paul Reintroduces theStopMilitarizing LawEnforcement Act

On Wednesday, U.S. Senators Brian Schatz (Hawaii) and Chris Van Hollen (Maryland) joined me in reintroducing the bipartisan Stop Militarizing Law Enforcement Act (S. 3931).

The bill would establishlimitations and create greater transparency on the federal transfer of surplus military-grade equipment to state and local law enforcement agencies.

It's important to note that this prohibition only applies to offensive equipment and does not prohibit the transfer of defensive equipment, such as body armor.

For years, I have fought to stop the federal militarization of local police departments, and Senator Schatz and I first introduced this reform in 2015.

I support our officers, but I do not believe it is beneficial for neighborhoods across the United States to have the same kind of military-grade weapons that are commonly used in Afghanistan.

The Stop Militarizing Law Enforcement Act institutes key reforms while ensuring officers still have access to protective equipment so they can do their jobs as safely as possible!

Dr. Rand Paul Introduces the Coronavirus Regulatory Repeal Act

Even the most ardent supporters of the heavy regulatory burdens imposed by Washington bureaucrats have come to realize that over-regulation hindered our countrys response to the pandemic.

So earlier this week, I introducedthe Senate version of the Coronavirus Regulatory Repeal Act (S. 3922), which would require Congress to justify restoring regulations that were either modified or waived in response to the pandemic.

It would make sure such regulations stay modified or waived unless Congress passes a law restoring them!

What kind of regulations would Congress review?

Just a few examples include easing restrictions on how much hand sanitizer you can take through airport security, allowing the use of new technologies in telehealth and distance education, and enabling hospitals and healthcare systems to more quickly hire local, trained medical personnel.

After it is passed, the legislation would givefederal agencies one month to report to Congress regarding whether regulations that have been waived or modified during the emergency should be restored, repealed, or left in effect as modified.

Federal department heads and the members of Congress that oversee their agencies would serve on Federal Regulatory Review Commissions," which would then have another month to recommend to the Speaker of the House and the Senate Majority Leader which regulations the Commission believes should be repealed, restored, or left modified.

Across Capitol Hill,U.S. Representative Chip Roy (Texas) has introduced the bill in the U.S. House, where it's filed as H.R. 6691.

As we move into the recovery phase, we have an opportunity to provide lasting relief.

I have long argued for reining in the administrative state, and common sense and simple good government demand we carefully evaluate changed or waived regulations to determine if they are necessary at all!

Dr. Rand Paul: "Trump Deserves Credit For Bringing The Troops Home"

"In 1988, a certain congressman from Texas ran for president on a platform of bringing home our troops from around the world," I wrote in my latest op-ed forThe American Conservative. "Even then, more than 30 years ago, U.S. troops were in over 100 countries, and tens of thousands were still in Europe," I pointed out.

"That Texas congressman was my father, Ron Paul," I continued, "who 20 years later ran again for the presidency and was still calling 'to begin bringing American troops home from around the worldan absolute necessity if the budget is ever to be brought under control. Were going broke and we still have 75,000 troops in Germany?'"

As President Donald Trump moves to reduce our troop levels in Germany, I applauded the decision in my op-ed and called for him to keep working to bring our soldiers home!

Though criticism of the decision from some corners in Washington is expected, "[w]ith the Cold War now 30 years moribund, the hysteria over removing troops is ludicrous," I said. "Meanwhile," I noted, "the very real threat of bankruptcy and menacing debt grows each day. Just this year, the United States will add $4 trillion to the national debt. Can the Germans afford to defend themselves? Without question. Germany actually balances its annual budget every year."

I also observed how stretching our troops around the world comes "at great expense in both lives and treasure. Often that puts our soldiers on the front lines of civil wars whose origins we barely even comprehend. The U.S. also becomes allied with governments, such as Saudi Arabia, that are barbaric, despotic, and anti-American. And yet the cycle continues because the war caucus vows to never, ever let our troops come home."
