Freedom to protest

Regarding Kneeling for anthem is protesting America, (A14, June 18): Ask Marc Thiessen who will speak for those U.S. solders like my dad and his three brothers who fought for others freedom when their freedom in the U.S. was limited or non-existent?

Rep. Harold V. Dutton, Jr., Houston

Marc Thiessen condemned Colin Kaepernick for kneeling during the national anthem. In doing so he repeated President Donald Trumps assertion that Kaepernick was kneeling to show disrespect for our flag, our military, and our country and not (as Kaepernick has repeatedly stated) to call attention to the disproportionate use of violence by the police against black and brown men.

When my grandson played soccer, he and his teammates were taught to kneel whenever a player on either team was injured. This was done to show respect for the injured player. In the old days a man would kneel to ask for his girlfriends hand in marriage. Soldiers kneel before the graves of their fallen comrades. Knights kneel before the queen. In each instance kneeling is a sign of respect. I cant think of any situation in which kneeling did not represent respect, until the president took it upon himself to redefine Colin Kaepernicks act as one of disrespect.

Barbara Navarro, Magnolia

Bravo to Marc Thiessens oped. My father fought in the South Pacific during WWII and was proud of his service as were many of his comrades. I was raised to respect the flag as a symbol of Americas ideals.

Because of many who fought for our country, you have a right to protest but (as Thiessen stated) when you disrespect the flag, you disrespect them.

Kitty Russell, Houston

White privilege

Regarding Pastors white blessing remarks draw fire, (A13, June 19): As a Houston native who now lives in Lufkin, I look forward to my enewspaper each day. As a just-left-of-center independent voter and thinker, I expect and want the news to be given without slant or bias. Please let me gather information and make my own decisions. When I saw the headline Pastors white blessing remarks draw fire, I was livid. I am a pastors wife, and I was ready to pounce and take action on this injustice. I had already typed a scathing Facebook comment about him not following the same Bible I follow. Then I read the rest of the story. This pastor said something that was totally stupid, unacceptable and apparently unintentional. When he realized what he said was not what he meant, he immediately retracted it and apologized. This is a story of sin and redemption. But your headline was clearly manipulated to get a readers attention, and sadly many of them may not have read anything but the biased headline. I am an ardent supporter of the First Amendment and freedom of the press, and I am thankful to be able to read your paper each morning. That being said, I am tired of the divisions in our country. Please just report the news fairly, and dont try to add to the divisiveness. Let us draw our own conclusions.

Politicized COVID-19 Response Imperils Both Freedom and Safety, States Journal of American Physicians and Surgeons – GlobeNewswire

TUCSON, Ariz., June 22, 2020 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Based on seriously flawed statistical models, government has seized unprecedented powers, claiming to protect us from the COVID-19 pandemic, writes Ohio endocrinologist David Westbrock, M.D., in the summer issue of the Journal of American Physicians and Surgeons. But have these measures done more harm than good, he asks.

The devastating economic impact is not irrelevant to health, Dr. Westbrock writes: As stated in a Wall Street Journal editorial, No society can safeguard public health for long at the cost of its overall economic health.

The medical impact is also being affected by governmental authorities, apparently driven by political forces and media coverage, Dr. Westbrock states. Some treatments, such as the use of plasma from recovered patients or the not-yet-approved remdesivir, are highlighted, while the hydroxychloroquine/azithromycin/zinc regimen and others are ignored or claimed to be dangerous or fraudulent.

Here, there is no right to try, and the media appears to accept that a central authority should make treatment decisions rather than individual, independent physicians.

For thousands of years physicians have been deciding what treatment or what drug is necessary, Dr. Westbrock writes. This includes the assessment of side effects as well as efficacy of any given treatment. Physicians are also trained to evaluate evidence. Yet one White House adviser presumes to declare that a large body of the best available clinical evidence on HCQ treatment is merely anecdotal.

Who should be in charge? Dr. Westbrock asks.

And what are the trade-offs? Dr. Westbrock cites Texas lieutenant governor Dan Patrick stating that he would gladly risk his demise to protect the future freedom of his children and grandchildren.

This is the dilemma we face today, Dr. Westbrock writes. Do we give up our natural, God-given freedoms and sacrifice the next generations economic well-being as well as family, social, and religious connections based on statistical prognostications?

The Journal of American Physicians and Surgeons is published by the Association of American Physicians and Surgeons (AAPS), a national organization representing physicians in all specialties since 1943.

Julian Assange’s fianc calls on the Australian government to secure his freedom – World Socialist Web Site

By Oscar Grenfell 22 June 2020

Stella Morris, the fianc of Julian Assange and mother of his two young children, issued a powerful call last night for the Australian government to secure the WikiLeaks founders freedom and prevent his extradition to the US, where he faces life imprisonment for exposing American war crimes.

Morris was featured on Channel Nines 60 Minutes program. The 24-minute segment provided an objective account of Assanges decade-long arbitrary detention, first in Ecuadors London embassy where he was a political refugee, and since April 2019 in the maximum-security Belmarsh Prison.

The program, presented by Tara Brown, was the first substantive examination of Assanges plight by the Australian media since the coronavirus pandemic began.

Despite the fact that he is an Australian journalist being persecuted by the most powerful governments in the world for his publishing activities, corporate media outlets have maintained an effective D-notice on Assange for more than three months. This has dovetailed with the refusal of the Australian government, the Labor opposition and all of the official parties to defend the WikiLeaks founder.

Morris warned that Assanges incarceration in Belmarsh, which she noted has been dubbed the UKs Guantanamo Bay, is exacerbating physical and psychological health issues stemming from his protracted persecution.

Hes very unwell and Im very concerned for his ability to survive this, she said. Now hes in the UKs worst prison. Its a high-security prison. One in five prisoners are murderers. He shouldnt be there. Hes not a criminal, hes not a dangerous person, hes a gentle intellectual thinker and a journalist. Those people are not the people who belong in prison.

Morris stated that she was very worried about Assanges circumstances. She has been unable to visit him since February, as a result of coronavirus lockdown measures. Despite widespread infections throughout the British penitentiary system, including in Belmarsh, and Assanges vulnerability to the virus as a result of a chronic lung condition, he has been refused bail.

If youre separated from your family and youre alone in a tiny, dark room for 23-hours a day, with no control over your surroundings, I think people can imagine what that is like, Morris said.

Brown stated that in such circumstances, most people would probably go mad. Morris responded: I think any person would get very severely depressed and he is very depressed. 60 Minutes showed Morris and her two young children speaking with Assange on the phone. The older of the two asked Assange when he was coming home.

Morris, a 37-year-old lawyer, recounted the circumstances of her relationship with Assange. They had grown close when she was working on his legal cases after he had successfully sought political asylum in the Ecuadorian embassy.

When the couples two children were born in 2017 and 2018, the new Ecuadorian government had initiated closer relations with the US and was increasingly hostile to Assange. UC Global, a Spanish firm contracted to manage the embassys security, was surveilling every aspect of Assanges life and was passing the material gathered to the US Central Intelligence Agency.

When she fell pregnant, Morris informed Assange by writing the news on a piece of paper. They were fearful that any conversation about their personal life would be picked up by the audio recording devices placed throughout the embassy by UC Global. Morris sought to hide her pregnancies from the embassy staff and after the children were born, a friend of Assange pretended to be their father and brought them to the embassy.

The real issue was I thought that our family would be targeted by the same people that were trying to harm Julian, Morris stated. The program featured news clips of senior US government figures denouncing Assange in hysterical terms and calling for him to be silenced. Morris noted that UC Global had considered stealing the diaper of one of her children to confirm his paternity, and had even discussed plans to kill Assange or allow American agents to kidnap him.

Morris commented that it would be difficult for many people to appreciate the lawlessness that had characterised Assanges persecution. Theres incredible criminality that has been going on in order to gather information about Julians lawyers, and his family, and journalists who were visiting him, she said. Ive been in a permanent state of fear for years and now its slowly playing out.

Significantly, the politically-motivated character of Swedish sexual misconduct allegations against Assange was made clear in the program. The allegations were concocted by that countrys police and judiciary, in the midst of a frenzied US campaign against WikiLeaks exposure of war crimes in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Brown noted that Assange had never been charged with a crime in Sweden, and that the Swedish investigation had been dropped. Australian independent parliamentarian Andrew Wilkie pointed out that documents had shown that the British government used the allegations to enforce Assanges arbitrary detention in the Ecuadorian embassy. The British authorities had been aware that the Swedish claims were a smokescreen for plans to dispatch Assange to his US persecutors.

The program concluded with an appeal from Morris to the Australian government. She said: I want people to understand that were being punished as a family. Its not just Julian in the prison. The kids are being deprived of their father. I need Julian and he needs me.

Morris declared: Id like to ask [Australian Prime Minister] Scott Morrison to do everything he can to get Julian back to his family. If Australia doesnt step in Im very fearful this wrong wont be righted. Its a nightmare.

Tellingly, Brown stated that Morrison, Foreign Minister Marise Payne and Christian Porter refused to be interviewed.

This was in line with the ten-year collaboration of Australian governments in the US-led vendetta against Assange. Beginning with the Greens-backed Labor government of Julia Gillard, they have rejected calls to defend the WikiLeaks founder, instead participating in the campaign against him.

The official hostility to Assange is bound up with the Australian ruling elites unconditional support for the US military alliance and all of American imperialisms illegal wars and military preparations and dovetails with a domestic assault on democratic rights, including attacks on press freedom and laws increasing punishments for whistleblowers. It is facilitated by the refusal of the Greens, the pseudo-left groups and the unions to mount any campaign for Assanges rights.

This underscores the fact that the fight for Assanges freedom and for the defence of all civil liberties requires the mobilisation of the working class. The international protests over recent weeks against police violence have demonstrated the objective basis for building such a movement.

5th Annual Tybee Island Wade-In commemorates fight for freedom – WSAV-TV

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) People came together on Tybee Island to wade in the water to celebrate Juneteenth.

People across the country are celebrating Juneteenth and its significance in American history. Savannah Mayor Van Johnson ordered June 19 to be an official city holiday as well as leaders in Bluffton and Statesboro.

Commemorative events are happening both locally and out on Tybee Island where community members gathered for the Fifth Annual Juneteenth Wade-In, led by the Tybee MLK Human Rights Organization.

Committee members said June 19s significance in history serves as the nations true independence day.

It took over 88 years after the War for Independence before all American people were free.

Julia Pearce, the coordinator for Tybee Islands Juneteenth commemoration and jubilee, said on July 4th, 1776, 20 percent of the colonists were still enslaved.

This is an American holiday, said Pearce. We are American people and we are asking everyone to come together. And this holiday is a Jubilee Day for everybody to come together.

Pearce said black soldiers who fought in the war were fighting for their freedoms too, but that day wouldnt come until June 19, 1865.

The truth can actually liberate us if we allow it, said Pearce. We can hold hands and look at the truth together. Hold hands, and look at it together. And thats what were going to do.

Patt Gunn, a Gullah Geechee storyteller led community members out on North Beach into the watersymbolic of the first wade-in which was led by some college students from Savannah State University in the 60s.

During that time, African Americans on Tybee Island were restricted by law from going into the Atlantic Ocean.

The wade-in was both a movement of protest, and a demonstration. Among the group was former Savannah Mayor Edna Jackson.

African Americans celebrate America just like everybody else and so weve been coming to the fourth of July knowing that the fourth of July really wasnt freedom for us. It wasnt freedom for us but its celebrated as a freedom day so we should actually have a freedom day thats for everyone, so thats what Juneteenth is about, Pearce stated.

Musicians performed Kumbaya and other native Gullah songs. Gunn addressed the crowd and told stories about Tybee Islands Wade-In history.

NAACP Vice President Chad Mance was the special speaker at the eventcalling for Juneteenth to be made an official holiday on the island: If you cant stand in solidarity to the freedom of all men, you cant stand in solidarity to the freedom of some.

COVID-19: Freedom Means That We Can Do Stupid Things, Not That We Have To – Anchorage Press

NBC News reports that US president Donald Trump is "furious" over "underwhelming" attendance at his June 20 campaign rally in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Only 6,200 of 19,000 seats ended up cradling Trump supporters' butts. An optimistically pre-arranged overflow area went unused.

Explanations abound: Trump's campaign spokesman, Tim Murtaugh, blames "radical protesters, coupled with a relentless onslaught from the media." Others note the 95-degree heat combined with thunderstorms -- not the weather combination most conducive to standing in lines. Still others credit a social media campaign to request but not use tickets to the event.

The most obvious and likely explanations are simpler.

First, Trump isn't as popular, nor is his base as enthusiastic and energized, at the moment as was the case four years ago.

Second, despite what you may have heard, an individual's support for Trump does not necessarily indicate more general idiocy.

Believe it or not, COVID-19 really is a thing, people really are worried about it, and it really is sensible to take precautions.

Has COVID-19 been abused by opportunistic bureaucrats and authoritarian politicians as an excuse to violate our rights? Yes.

Have we found ourselves bombarded by dubious claims about everything from how COVID-19 is transmitted to what must be done for humanity to survive it? Absolutely.

Have mask-wearing and other measures transcended their practical containment value and become more like public testimonials to belief in junk "science" as a state-sponsored religion? Yep.

The "lockdowns" should never have happened, it's a good thing they're ending, and the sooner life gets back to something resembling normal the better.

On the other hand, it's a real disease that's really killing people, and taking reasonable precautions is, well, reasonable.

Yes, as freedom returns, some people will throw caution entirely to the winds. They should be free to act like idiots, right up to the point they actually -- not prospectively, not hypothetically, ACTUALLY -- cause harm to non-consenting others.

They should also be free to refrain from acting like idiots.

Packing tens of thousands of people from hundreds or thousands of miles around into an arena for a rally in Tulsa was an idiotic idea that might as well have been designed specifically to maximize the spread of COVID-19. But hey, it turned out that most of Trump's supporters from that area weren't idiots after all.

Packing thousands of Republicans from all over the country into an arena in Jacksonville, Florida in August, or hundreds of Libertarians from 50 states into a hotel ballroom in Orlando, Florida in July, for gratuitous "national convention events" are idiotic ideas too.

No, those events shouldn't be prohibited. Freedom demands that they not be interfered with. But freedom also allows us non-idiots to avoid the events and scorn their organizers.

No restrictions on using firearms: India gives soldiers freedom along LAC in extraordinary times – Hindustan Times

A significant change in Rules of Engagement (ROE) by the Indian Army following the Galwan Valley skirmish that left 20 Indian soldiers dead gives complete freedom of action to commanders deployed along the contested Line of Actual Control (LAC) to handle situations at the tactical level, two senior officers said on Saturday on condition of anonymity.

The commanders will no longer be bound by restrictions on the use of firearms and will have full authority to respond to extraordinary situations using all resources at their disposal, said one of the officers cited above.

The amendment in ROE comes after Indian and Chinese soldiers engaged in their first deadly conflict in 45 years in Galwan Valley on June 15, resulting in death of 20 Indian army troops and several Chinese casualties.

Also read: Released after 60 hours by China, 10 Indian soldiers undergo debriefing

In his remarks during an all-party meeting on Friday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the army had been given the freedom to take necessary steps along the border and India had conveyed its position (to China) through diplomatic means.

With the changes in the ROE, theres nothing that limits the ability of Indian commanders to take whatever action they deem necessary on the LAC. ROE have been amended to address the brutal tactics being employed by Chinese troops, said the second officer cited above.

The seven-hour Galwan Valley clash marked the first time India suffered combat fatalities in an incident involving Chinese troops since 1975. Changes in ROE were imminent after a series of violent clashes along the border, with the army finally deciding not to restrict the scope of response of its soldiers after the June 15 clash, the second officer said.

Two violent clashes took place in Pangong Tso (May 5-6) and Galwan Valley (around mid-May) before the June 15 skirmish in eastern Ladakh. On all occasions, they came in huge numbers and assaulted our troops with iron roads and nail-studded clubs. Our troops fought back fearlessly but the ROE had to be revisited, he said.

Also read: India tells China to stick to its side, says no soldier missing

Forward troops keep their guns slung on their backs with the magazines in pouches and not clipped on.

Since soldiers are allowed to carry weapons while patrolling the LAC, it is inherent that they can use the firearms in unprecedented situations like the attack in Galwan Valley, said former Northern Army commander Lieutenant General BS Jaswal (retd).

The government said on Thursday that soldiers involved in the June 15 clash with Chinese troops were carrying weapons and ammunition but did not open fire as they were following border agreements between the two countries -- a remark that came in response to a question from Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on whether the Indian soldiers were sent in unarmed.

Let us get the facts straight. All troops on border duty always carry arms, especially when leaving post. Those at Galwan on 15 June did so. Long-standing practice (as per 1996 & 2005 agreements) not to use firearms during faceoffs, external affairs minister S Jaishankar tweeted, responding to a post by Gandhi earlier this week.

Border agreements from 1996 and 2005 between India and China disallow the use of firearms during face-offs. Article 6 of the agreement on confidence-building measures in the military field along the LAC, signed by India and China in November 1996, states that both sides will not open fire or conduct blast operations or hunt with guns or explosives within two kilometers from the Line of Actual Control.

Top retired commanders and China watchers, however, said that Galwan clash and last months Pangong Tso brawl were not classical face-offs between rival troops but were extremely violent attacks on Indian soldiers.

Reform Party Nominates Roque Rocky DE La Fuente for President, He Was Their Nominee in 2016, and Is Also the Alliance Party Nominee. – Yahoo Finance

TAMPA, FL / ACCESSWIRE / June 20, 2020 / The Reform Party today nominated lifelong American businessman and serial entrepreneur Roque "Rocky" De La Fuente for president in an online presidential nominating convention in which more than 70% of the delegates voted for him.

De La Fuente was also the Reform Party's nominee in 2016, and last month was selected as the presidential nominee for the Alliance Party. His running mate in both parties is Darcy G. Richardson.

In an online convention of assembled Reform Party delegates, De La Fuente received 17 votes. Candidate Max Abramson, who is a member of the New Hampshire House of Representatives, received four. J. Ben Zion, Founder, and Chair of the Arizona Transhumanist Party, who is also an Independent Party Presidential candidate in the 2020 election, received one. Candidate Soraya Faas had withdrawn before the vote and endorsed De La Fuente.

The Reform Party is only on the ballot in Florida.

DE LA FUENTE'S ACCEPTANCE SPEECH

"Now, the real work begins," said De La Fuente. "Our priorities are clear: To make significant strides in achieving our mission to fundamentally change the governing structure in this nation. The American people know the current process of our national government is broken. We must convince the American people we are the solution. We must remind them of the almost forgotten principles on which this nation was founded. First among those is a near-sacred dedication to preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States of America, which has been ruthlessly abused, illegally manipulated, plainly ignored and regularly misused to gain partisan political advantage.

"I have a vision of an America that ranks as the very best example in the world in the outcomes that determine the quality of life of our citizens. I have a vision for an America that combats the human challenges we all hold in common: immigration, climate change, poverty, ignorance, sickness, income inequality, and injustice."

About Roque "Rocky" De La Fuente

Roque "Rocky" De La Fuente is living proof that the American Dream can be achieved by those who are inspired to pursue it. He has an amazing record of success. From earning an FAA license to fly single engine planes at the age of 20 to owning 29 automobile dealerships and becoming Chairman of the National Dealers Council for the third largest automobile manufacturer in the world by the age of 28, he's in a league by himself. He created a banking network in 1982 to help address Mexico's economic crisis and established impressive real estate holdings throughout the United States while creating thousands of new jobs along the way. In 1992, Rocky became the first Hispanic American to serve as a Delegate-At-Large for the State of California at a National Convention. He holds a bachelor's degree in Physics and Mathematics (Magna Cum Laude) and an honorary doctorate from UNESCO. Roque "Rocky" De La Fuente has been a great success in his political career, achieving great acceptance among the Latino community.

Inside the Beltway: A transhumanist Republican has a say – Washington Times

He has been billed as the cyborg who is running against President Trump. That would be Republican presidential hopeful Zoltan Istvan a self-described transhumanist based in California who hopes his futuristic message of fusing radical technology with daily life resonates in a complicated political marketplace.

His campaign motto is Upgrade America, and he supports everything from artificial wombs to the use of drones to prevent mass shootings. He ran as an independent for president in 2016, and is repeating his efforts in 2020 as a Republican.

My presidential campaign has been based on being a new type of Republican one thats more open-minded about the future, about the vast social differences across the nation, and about how the world is being changed by new science and technologies like artificial intelligence and genetic editing, Mr. Istvan tells Inside the Beltway.

He has campaigned in such traditional venues as the Iowa caucuses. He has also spent much time aboard the Immortality Bus, which is meant to be a pro-science symbol of resistance against aging and death, says Mr. Istvan, 47, and a married father of two.

The Immortality Bus aims to usher in the next great civil rights debate. Should we use science and technology to overcome death and become a stronger species? asks the candidate.

He has a website at ZoltanIstvan.com, of course. But wait. Now theres also Immortality or Bust. Yes, its Immortality Bus, the movie.

This is a feature-length documentary on transhumanism, my life and my Immortality Bus road trip, and it debuts on Tuesday, says Mr. Istvan, noting that there are plenty of Libertarians who appear in the film.

It follows my two-year presidential campaign as a transhumanist. Simply put, that means someone who wants to use science and technology to upgrade humans. This is not your typical politicians film, or public relations project. The content includes such issues as artificial intelligence, cryopreservation, biohacking, and protests against such existential risks like a life-threatening plague. My own efforts to deliver a Transhumanist Bill of Rights to the U.S. Capitol are all part of the journey, the candidate tells the Beltway.

Curious?

This documentary follows Zoltan on his improbable journey to its final, and revealing conclusion, notes iTunes.com, which is among multiple online spots that are featuring Mr. Istvans 80-minute outreach.

BIDE-N-SEEK

There are multiple reasons why 2020 does not seem to be a presidential election year. The coronavirus pandemic is the biggest one, along with a news media which has remained fixated on trashing President Trump rather than reporting on policy issues or voter concerns.

Some analysts also believe the press is shielding Democratic presidential nominee Joseph R. Biden from too much public exposure as he hones his campaign.

But the clock is ticking.

Joe Biden cant hide in the basement forever. The fact that he hasnt done a press conference in 81 days is indefensible, Republican National Committee Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel tells Fox News.

President Trump goes in front of the media every single day. Hes the most accessible president we have ever seen in the media. Joe Biden is trying to run this Bide-n-seek campaign, and its not going to work forever, declares Mrs. McDaniel.

AN EXISTENTIAL THREAT

About the only thing that Republicans and Democrats can agree on is that the nation is politically polarized, The two sides cant even agree to disagree. Meanwhile, one analyst has deep thoughts about President Trump and his quest for the White House.

The Left regards Trump as an existential threat. The attack they mount against him will be unprecedented in ferocity and underhandedness. There is no malign expedient they will not avail themselves of, no dirty trick to which they will not stoop, writes Roger Kimball, editor and publisher of The New Criterion and publisher of Encounter Books.

Which is why the silent majority that the president invoked in his Tulsa rally can no longer remain silent. Just as Trump is an existential threat to the deep state and its culture of corruption, so too that establishment is an existential threat to America as conceived by the founders, Lincoln, Reagan, and Trump, Mr. Kimball says in his essay, published by the Epoch Times.

He continues to mull Mr. Trumps recent campaign rally, and what he told the crowd.

The choice in 2020, as the president said, is very simple. Do you want to bow before the left wing mob? Or do you want to stand up tall and proud as Americans?

MEANWHILE IN GREENLAND

A statue of a Danish-Norwegian colonizer in Greenlands capital Nuuk was marked with red paint and the word decolonize on Sunday, reports Jacob Gronholt-Pedersen, a Danish correspondent for Reuters.

The incident comes as statues and monuments around the world are being reconsidered in light of the Black Lives Matter movement, and is a reminder of the tensions between Greenlands mostly Indigenous Inuit residents and former colonial power Denmark. It also comes less than a year after President Trump offered to buy the vast island, he writes.

The statue of Hans Egede, a missionary whose arrival in Greenland in 1721 marked the beginning of the islands colonial era, was marked in the early morning hours, police said. Images of the statue posted on social media drew hundreds of mostly approving comments.

Inuit are constantly silenced and never given the opportunity to process the traumas that have been passed down for generations, said Paninnguaq Lind Jensen, who runs a tattoo shop in Nuuk.

Greenland is home to 56,025 people and was a Danish colony until 1953 when it became a formal part of the Nordic nation. In 2009, Greenland achieved self-governing autonomy, including the right to declare independence from Denmark.

The alliances supreme allied commander for Europe, a job currently filled by U.S. Air Force Gen. Tod Wolters, has tasking authority over the new capability. The North Atlantic Council also gets a say in cases of missions outside of NATO territory.

The first two drones arrived late last year. Officials expect the rest of the fleet to make the trip from the manufacturers facilities in Palmdale, California, throughout the summer.

Earlier this spring, travel restrictions spurred by the spread of the novel coronavirus had raised the possibility of a delay in getting the initial plane approved for its flight schedule. But the Italian government allowed a team of Northrop specialists into Italy in late May for acceptance testing, a key step in obtaining an airworthiness certificate for the drone.

COVID-related delays ended up only being a few weeks, but nothing that significant, Camille Grand, NATOs assistant secretary general for defense investment, told Defense News in an interview, referring to the coronavirus disease. We are now moving to a pattern of regular flight to enable the force to use the drone.

Officials have been tight-lipped about exactly where they intend to use the aircraft once they are fully operational.

You can imagine missions of looking into the situation on NATOs borders, Grand said. Both in the south, in the Middle East or the east. The drones enable you to collect intelligence beyond your airspace.

While the initial aircraft has already completed at least one nine-hour flight over the Mediterranean Sea, it remains to be seen if the the aircraft can get clearance from Italian regulators to fly over land, where air traffic is more crowded and a mishap could be catastrophic.

The general idea is to use the Italian airworthiness approval to fly anywhere. The beauty of the European airspace is that once your are certified in Italy, you can fly across the European airspace, Grand said.

He noted that the certification currently in effect is provisional, and that the scope of the process is likely to expand over time.

For now, high-flying military surveillance drones traversing the continent must obtain permission from national airspace authorities for a restricted flight corridor to protect nearby civilian traffic. Such is the case, for example, when U.S. unmanned aircraft fly reconnaissance missions close to the Baltics.

The Alliance Ground Surveillance programs ambition is to lift any limitations, Grand said. It is a very interesting and fascinating challenge because it is the first time ever that we are incorporating those Global Hawks in what is usually a crowded airspace on a permanent basis.

NATO Allied ships patrol in the Black Sea – NATO HQ

The United States Navy dock landing ship USS Oak Hill joined the guided missile destroyer USS Porter in the Black Sea on Thursday (18 June 2020) for maritime security operations and to train with Allies and partners in the region. Porter entered the Black Sea on Wednesday.

NATO spokesperson Oana Lungescu welcomed the deployment, saying: The Black Sea is of strategic importance to NATO. Since Russias illegal annexation of Crimea, the Alliance has increased its presence in the region. This includes maritime security operations such as this one, as well as training for partner navies and coast guards, and information sharing. By working with Allies and partners, we continue to ensure the security of the Black Sea region.

The arrival of the USS Oak Hill marks the fourth time a US Navy ship patrols the Black Sea in 2020. The two vessels will not be making any port calls in the region, but stay at sea to avoid any potential COVID-19 exposure. The US Navy and other NATO navies routinely operate in the Black Sea, consistent with international law, patrolling the waters for around two-thirds of the year.

Three NATO members Bulgaria, Romania, and Turkey are littoral Black Sea states, with their own forces in the region. NATO is also strengthening support for its partners Georgia and Ukraine. In April, NATO Foreign Ministers agreed to conduct more Black Sea exercises with both countries, as well as stepping up joint work to counter hybrid warfare and share more air traffic radar data.

Poland to turn into threat for Russia in case of strengthening of NATO presence, – Peskov – 112 International

Russia will see Poland as a threat if NATO facilities are deployed in that country. The spokesman for the President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Peskov said this to the Channel One reporters, as RBC reports.

"As a country ready to provide its territory for the military infrastructure of third countries or for an organization such as the North Atlantic Alliance, this poses a threat to us," Peskov said.

He noted that at the moment, Russia does not consider Poland a country of danger. However, "a consistent drift of NATO's military infrastructure" toward Russian borders is undesirable for Moscow. According to Peskov, this is forcing Russia to strengthen measures to guarantee security.

On June 19, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov called NATO's "provocative" actions in the Baltic states and Poland.

In March of this year, Polish Foreign Minister Jacek Czaputowicz announced the creation of up to six new NATO military facilities for various purposes in the country.

In addition, in May, the United States announced its intention to redeploy part of its military contingent from Germany to Poland.

China is on NATO radar more than ever, says US envoy – Economic Times

Washington: NATO is reassessing its situation with regards to China, a top American envoy to the powerful military grouping has said, asserting that Beijing is on its radar more than ever in the past.

China can be a peaceful partner but it is not projecting that at the moment, Kay Bailey Hutchison, US Permanent Representative to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), told reporters at a virtual meeting here.

"China could be a peaceful partner, a good trade partner, but they're not showing that right now, and I think NATO partners are looking at this, and NATO is beginning to assess what China is doing as well," she said.

"It's much more on our radar screen, and I think it should be because we should assess the risk, hope for the best but prepare for the worst," Hutchison said on the aggressive behaviour and provocative actions of China against Taiwan, Japan and India.

On whether a risk of an actual military confrontation was on the horizon, she said, "I think NATO is now looking to the East."

Everything that has been happening with the 5G networks is being dealt with in the US and Europe throughout the alliance, Hutchison said.

"We're trying to keep our communications secure and seeing that some of the Chinese competitors do not have the capability to control the contractual obligations that are made by communications providers all of those things, including the Belt and Road Initiative, are raising concerns, concerns among our allies, about what is the intent of China," she said.

The United States is very clear that it wants China to be a partner in the world order and it is known that China has stolen intellectual property, violated tariff and subsidies set down by the world courts and the World Trade Organization, Hutchison said.

"So we know that China has the capability to compete on a level playing field, and we're asking them to do that, but we're also turning a wary eye to their behaviour right now in the South China Sea, militarising islands that they said would never be done, as well as the clampdown on Hong Kong," she said.

US Army training resumes in Europe amid pandemic and the threat of troop cuts – DefenseNews.com

Defense News' Sebastian Sprenger explains why NATO and partner forces are training, despite the pandemic.

COLOGNE, Germany Buoyed by the recent Allied Spirit exercise in Poland, U.S. Army officials in Europe are eyeing a resumption of their training schedule amid the continued danger of the coronavirus and talk in Washington of removing almost 10,000 troops from Germany.

We continue to fight for opportunities to train, Brig. Gen. Christopher Norrie, the head of 7th Army Training Command based at Grafenwhr, Germany, said in an interview. That is, so long as relevant health protocols can be followed, he added.

The exercise at the Drawsko Pomorskie Training Area in northwestern Poland, which ended on Friday, served as something of a trial balloon on whether live training can be done at all. The drill was an offspring of the larger Defender Europe-20 training campaign that had to be curtailed somewhat when the novel coronavirus outbreak swept through Europe in March.

There is some momentum that we expect to build coming out of Allied Spirit in preparation for the remainder of the summer, Norrie told Defense News. All of the resources are aligned, the commands in place.

The general idea of these exercises is to demonstrate a U.S. commitment to Europe vis-a-vis Russia, which officials here believe is feeling out the limits of NATOs resolve on the continent.

In that context, the river-crossing drill takes on a relevant strategic flavor. The area in Poland, a critical strip of land connecting Western Europe to the Baltic states, is riddled with rivers and lakes.

Whats more, the exercise saw a fictitious enemy composed of Polish and U.S. troops mount a defensive strategy aimed pushing soldiers back from the body of water at center of the event, Zly Leg Lake.

Elements of the 1st Cavalry Division, based at Fort Hood, Texas, also participated in the event, by way of a data link through the Joint Multinational Readiness Center at the Hohenfels Training Area in Bavaria.

The fact that we would commit to doing this live in such a demanding, relevant environment against such a determined opposing force is a very tangible expression of our commitment not only to our own organization and our own formations, but also in support of our NATO partners and allies throughout Europe, Norrie said.

Germany is something of a hub for U.S. Army training and staging in Europe, though that status is now in question given a push by U.S. President Donald Trump to move 9,500 troops from the country to Poland.

Little has trickled down about exactly what is in store, however. Kay Bailey Hutchison, the U.S. representative to NATO, said no final decisions have been made. NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, meanwhile, told reporters he had no information about how and when the Trump administration wants to proceed.

Military leaders, too, are still in the dark. Gen. Jeffrey Harrigian, the head of Air Forces in Europe told reporters last week that he had received no instructions toward a drawdown from Germany.

As a one-star officer, the current drawdown debate is above his pay grade, Norrie admitted. There is no change in mission to provide lethal, credible, ready combat formations in support of U.S. Army Europe and U.S. European Command, and we continue to focus on that, he said.

In creating the command's training curriculum, the officials study reports of adversary activity worldwide, including tactics in the domains of hybrid warfare, countering drones, and electronic warfare, according to Norrie.

One relatively new tack is aimed at reducing units' electromagnetic footprint in the field. That includes eliminating vulnerabilities stemming from the use of personal electronic equipment like phones or smart watches.

Those lessons partly stem from reports from eastern Ukraine, where Russian-backed separatists were able to track Ukrainian forces through their communications activity, directing drone-aided long-range fires at the formations.

RAF Fighter Jets, Surveillance and Refuelling aircraft have been in action across Europe this week in support of NATO allies – GOV.UK

During the early morning of 15 June, Typhoons from RAF Coningsby met up with two US Ai Force (USAF) B-52 bombers off the North of Scotland as they arrived from their base in the USA to conduct a long-range strategic training mission in the annual NATO BALTOPs exercise in the Baltic region.

The Typhoons welcomed the B-52s as they entered UK airspace and then escorted them across the North Sea as they were refuelled by USAF KC-135 tankers from RAF Mildenhall. The Typhoons from XI(F) Sqn were supported by a Voyager tanker from RAF Brize Norton, with coordination being provided by RAF Sentry and Sentinel aircraft from RAF Waddington.

As the B-52s from the 5th Bomb Wing, Minot Air Force Base, North Dakota left Danish airspace, they conducted additional training with French Mirage 2000 and then RAF Typhoon jets from the Baltic Air Policing mission as they flew over Latvia and Estonia.

Defence Secretary Ben Wallace said:

NATO remains the best guarantor of our collective security and we continue to stand alongside our allies in the Baltics. That is why, despite the ongoing pandemic, the RAFs participation in this multinational exercise is vital for enhancing Allied capabilities and demonstrating our combined strength.

The following day Typhoons from the RAF Lossiemouth based 6 Sqn deployed in Lithuania, switched from the BALTOPS exercise to intercept a SU-24 Fencer E and two SU-35 Flanker M Russian aircraft operating off the Baltic coast. This was followed on the 18 June by another Typhoon scramble to deter and intercept a Russian IL-20 COOT A intelligence gathering aircraft over the Baltic Sea.

Wing Commander Stu Gwinnett, the 135 Expeditionary Air Wing commander that is carrying out the NATO Air Policing mission said:

This weeks missions have highlighted the flexibility of the NATO Baltic Air Policing mission; whether its working with the US Bomber Task Force or reacting to live Baltic airspace incursions, we are ready to react. This is a testament to the flexibility, training and professionalism of the deployed RAF personnel here in Lithuania and our ability to work with our NATO partners.

Reflecting on the air activity this week Air Chief Marshal Mike Wigston, the Chief of the Air Staff said:

In a week that has been a painful reminder of the dangers of what we do, we have also demonstrated air and space power on a global scale, operating at range, at speed, and precisely. Royal Air Force command and control, surveillance, refuelling and fighter aircraft working alongside our NATO allies, patrolling our skies and protecting our shared freedom.

Nordic militaries rekindle old alliances, as Russia warms to the region – DefenseNews.com

HELSINKI The Nordic countries are pushing to deepen trans-Atlantic defense collaboration with the United States in the High North amid fears that the Trump administrations mixed messages on NATO could lead to a diminished presence by the alliance in Northern Europe.

Concerns over NATOs capacity to counter potential threats by Russia in the strategic High North and Baltic Sea regions has reignited interest by the Nordic countries, led by Sweden, to explore the development of joint naval, air and mechanized rapid-response infantry units. Nordic leaders have been tentatively discussing the possible formation of common capacities since 2016. However, little in terms of real substantive plans have emerged from the cross-border dialogue to date.

Nordic collaboration in defense continues to evolve. We are looking to find new ways to cooperate in practical areas that can deliver improved security in the High North and Baltic Sea areas, said Antti Kaikkonen, Finlands defense minister.

Non-aligned Arctic states Sweden and Finland have already conducted bilateral talks to consider the formation of joint fighter squadrons and Arctic-specific, modular-designed, rapid-response brigades. The long-term expectation is that neighboring NATO states Denmark and Norway would join the group under the umbrella of the existing Nordic Defense Cooperation pact.

Of the four Nordic defense partners, Norway is the most enthusiastic supporter for an enlarged role for U.S. and NATO forces in the Arctic High North.

Faced with Russias continued scaling-up of its defense infrastructure on the Kola Peninsula, coupled with a surge in multi-branch exercises by Russian forces closer to its borders, Norways immediate response has been to raise spending to bolster military preparedness and capacities.

Aside from a strong desire to see the United States play a more robust role in the security of the region, Nordic governments are also interested in deepening defense cooperation with Germany.

Nordic defense ministers conducted a video-link conference with the German Defence Minister Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer on June 18. The meeting focused on key security and defense issues, including regional security and future challenges in maintaining a healthy trans-Atlantic alliance.

Germany is an important actor and partner not alone in Europe, but also in the Baltic Sea region. We share common interests regarding the security situation in Northern Europe. This is a well-developed cooperation we want to expand, said Peter Hultqvist, Swedens defense minister.

For Norway, the potential threats posed by Russia to long-term security in the High North regions is encapsulated in the governments Long-Term Defense Plan 2020-2024 (LTDP) for Norways Armed Forces, released on April 17. The 123-page document refers to Russia a total of 58 times in the context of presenting a military threat and provoking instability in the High North and Baltic Sea theaters.

The plan aspires to combine Norwegian capability working in partnership with a strong commitment and presence by the U.S. and NATO to counter any future security threat by Russia in the High North, said Norwegian Defence Minister Frank Bakke-Jensen.

"Norway needs to have a regular and predictable presence in the High North. We want to ensure stability and retain the influence we have in the security development in our own neighborhood. We are strengthening both our military capacity on the one hand and cooperation with NATO and the US on the other," Bakke-Jensen said.

The LTDP document observes that Russia currently poses a bigger threat to regional security than has been the case for several decades. Significantly, the Norwegian government is also busy improving channels of communication between Oslo and Moscow in order to enhance its working relationships with Russias leaders and military top brass.

The potential of Russias military power has significantly changed in the last number of years. The countrys behavior has become increasingly assertive and venturous. Russia is prepared and willing to apply a wide specter of military and non-military means to fulfill its goals, the LTDP report concludes.

In practical terms, the plan adds $1.73 billion to the Norwegian Armed Forces, or NAF, budget over the next 8-years. The extra monies will be used for major capital investment programs to reinforce the overall capability and fire-power of the NAFs Arctic-based Brigade North.

Critical procurements for the NAF will include new armored combat vehicles and long-range precision weapons. A new mobile unit dedicated to chemical, biological, radioactive and nuclear defense will be established.

Importantly, Norways ramped-up military spending addresses capacity shortcomings in core areas naval and air-defense strength. To this end the NAF will add four new-build submarines to its naval fleet by 2030. The Army will upgrade its existing NASAMS air-defense system with modern sensors and acquire a long-range air defense system to counter threats from short-range ballistic missiles. The NAF will also form a new extreme climate maritime special force unit called the Special Operations Task Group.

In the unified Nordic defense domain, national governments support the expansion of more regular joint training and multi-branch exercises in cooperation with NATO in the High North and the Baltic Sea theaters.

In May, Swedish JAS 39 Gripen fighters joined Norwegian F-35s as part of a wider, long-range strategic bombers task force mission that included American B-1B Lancers from the 28th Bomb Wing out of Ellsworth Air Force Base in South Dakota.

The May 20 exercise was notable in that it was the first time US strategic long-range bombers participated in exercises over Swedish airspace. For the Swedish Air Force, the mission included refueling of JAS 39 Gripens from American KC-135 Stratotankers.

Although not a NATO-member, Sweden signed a host-country agreement with NATO in 2014 allowing Allied Forces to conduct joint training exercises in the country.

Exercises like these are important. They enable us to demonstrate interoperability and our role as a reliable and relevant partner. The trans-Atlantic link and combined exercises with U.S. air units serve to increase our capability and create security and stability in the High North and Baltic Sea regions, said Maj. Gen. Carl-Johan Edstrm, the Swedish Air Forces commander.

The world needs a policeman, the bad guys are filling the US vacuum, says ex-NATO chief Rasmussen – Euronews

The world needs stronger American leadership, former NATO Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen told Euronews, warning of a resurgence in authoritarianism across the world.

He was speaking from the Copenhagen Democracy Summit, an annual event that he hosts and which aims to strengthen democracies worldwide through debate.

"We lack a clear, global American ideological leadership. We know from experience that when the Americans retreat, they will leave behind a vacuum, and that vacuum will be filled by the bad guy, and that's exactly what we are witnessing right now," Rasmussen told Euronews in a live TV interview.

Take the Middle East, he said, citing conflict, upheaval and the resurgence of Russia, Turkey, Iran and Saudi Arabia in the region ever since the United States disengaged from Syria.

"The world needs a policeman to restore international law and order and I don't see any other candidate for that role than the United States," Rasmussen said.

In the meantime, he suggests setting up an alliance of democracies led by what he would like to call the D10 a group of leaders similar to the G7 that would bring together not the worlds economic heavyweights, but "democratic heavyweights like India, Australia and South Korea."

US President Trump is pulling troops out of Germany, and according to his former national security adviser John Bolton, he was on the brink of pulling out of NATO altogether. French President Emmanuel Macron also warned last year that NATO was nearly "brain dead."

Rasmussen deplored that statements like these undermine "the political credibility of the alliance".

"Of course, Europe should take more care of its own security, that goes without saying," he added. "But I consider European security linked to America."

"This is exactly why we established NATO many years ago because we need American close cooperation with Europe to ensure our security."

Haas assumes command of 80th FTW > Air Education and Training Command > News – Maxwell-Gunter Air Force Base

SHEPPARD AIR FORCE BASE, Texas During these uncertain and unprecedented times, it takes a strong, no-nonsense leader to take on the responsibility of the Euro-NATO Joint Jet Pilot Training mission here.

A fighter pilot with combat experience took on that role June 19, 2020, when Col. Robert F. Haas Jr. assumed command of the 80th Flying Training Wing, home to the only internationally manned and operated pilot training program.

Maj. Gen. Craig Wills, 19th Air Force commander, officiated the change of command ceremony via remote technology as Col. Russell D. Driggers relinquished command after two years leading the organization.

Haas said he is humbled by the opportunity to lead the unique wing, and his desire is to meet and exceed expectations of the Air Education and Training Command and the Air Force. That begins, he said, with the men and women who are Team ENJJPT.

I have been an (introduction to fight fundamentals) instructor pilot, a (specialized undergraduate pilot training) squadron commander, I was a SUPT operations group commander, and now Im finally joining the ENJJPT team, he said. Know this. There is no higher bar than being a member of the ENJJPT team in the pilot training business.

The colonel said his path, just as the programs mission, is illuminated by mission needs, accepting smart risks to accomplish the mission, believing in safe and disciplined flying operations, and wholeheartedly subscribing to diversity. He said he cant think of another organization that represents those areas better than ENJJPT.

Wills said Haas has a phenomenal reputation as a fighter pilot as well as in the roles of an instructor, operations leader and commander. He said his previous Air Force experience has prepared him to lead such a diverse organization that trains combat pilots for 14 NATO countries.

With tours at Aviano (Air Base, Italy) and Ramstein (AB, German), Bob has a deep understanding of NATO and he has long-lasting relationships that will certainly serve him well in this capacity, the general said. He is a straight shooter, no-nonsense leader, deep thinker and gets the job done and takes care of his people along the way.

Wills applauded Haass accomplishments as the 71st Operations Group commander, his role before taking command of the 80th FTW. The general said Haas was at the forefront of AETCs innovation efforts when it comes to UPT 2.5, an effort to maximize pilot training through the use of conventional training methods and innovative platforms such as virtual, augmented and mixed realities.

The 80th FTW and ENJJPT, he said, has played a lead role in implementing those technologies into the classroom.

In short, youll find no leader thats better prepared to assume command of this fine wing than Bob Haas, Wills said. Hes a NATO warrior, hes a strategist, hes an innovator, hes a thinker and a leader who will take this program to the next level.

The 19th AF commander also thanked Driggers for his leadership of the wing the past two years, part of which included figuring out how to continue the mission in the midst of COVID-19.

Russ, Im immensely proud of the work you and the ENJJPT team have done in the face of this unprecedented threat, he said. You found smart ways to split into pods to keep the operation flowing. In fact, (ENJJPT) set the bar very high early on.

Wills applauded Driggers for leading the wing through the pursuit of innovative technologies in pilot training to produce combat pilots better and faster, for building strong local relationships that helped with encroachment issues, and for being a key voice in the ENJJPT Steering Committee and fostering trust among its members during a challenging time.

Driggers, just as he did when he took command of the wing two years ago, spoke about gratitude, giving and gravity. The list of thank yous was long and deserving, and the amount of effort and dedication given to the program, the products, the students and the partner nations by members of Team ENJJPT was unwavering, he said. The gravity of the program, especially during COVID-19, was never lost on those in the organization.

The Legion of Merit is a reflection of what the wing has accomplished. Its a reflection of what yall have done, he said of the award presented to him during the ceremony. For me, its something I get to put on my uniform and wear as a daily reminder of you and what you have achieved.

Following the ceremony, Driggers promoted to the rank of brigadier general, frocked.
