Shortly after I graduated college, I began to experience panic attacks. If youve never had them, count your blessings; if youve suffered from them, my sincerest sympathies. When one occurs, your heart races, you cant catch your breath, and you feel as if youre going to die or go insane, or perhaps both.

The psalmist accurately captured the overwhelming sense of such fear: I have sunk into the mire of the deep, where there is no foothold. I have gone down to the watery depths; the flood overwhelms me (Ps 69:3).

As I began to unravel why I was beset by these episodes, I realized that what seemed to be triggering the terror was a deep anxiety over the future, a feeling that I didnt at all know (and wasnt in the least control of) how the coming days, weeks and months would unfold. By the grace of God, I learned to counter the attacks through prayer, Scripture and some commonsense strategies.

But recently, those old worrying sensations stole over me as I sat at my kitchen table, buried in emails, holding on the phone for a plumber and mulling the mornings sobering news headlines.

After Id hung up from the call, weeks of global crisis and ongoing suffering closer to home got the better of me: a tear dropped onto my lashes, followed by another, and soon I was weeping.

Please, Jesus, I whispered. Everything looks so dark, and I do not see the way ahead.

A quiet reply stirred in my heart: You dont need to see the way. You only need to see Me.

The gentle rebuke calmed me, and in the days since, Ive started to reflect more on just how much I actually trust the Lord, and to what extent I believe that his plan is the better and the only one, in the scope of eternity. So often my surrender to the divine will is more of a negotiated treaty, with numerous conditions. Quite honestly, I want Jesus, but on my terms.

Yet qualifiers and clauses dont hold up when youre faced with the impossible, and no one knew that better than Jehoshaphat, king of Judah.

As a ruler, he was vigorous and resourceful; he enacted spiritual reforms to eliminate idolatry (2 Chron 17:3-4, 6) and kickstarted business in the kingdom, building strongholds and store cities in Judah and carrying out many works (2 Chron 17:12, 13).

Given his energy and initiative and the more than 1 million soldiers he could muster you might think he wouldnt be completely thrown by the threat of invasion. However, advised that the Moabites, the Ammonites and with them some Meunites had amassed themselves against him, he was frightened (2 Chron 20:1, 3).

In response, Jehoshaphat proclaimed a fast, gathered the people and then led them in one of the most humble and heartfelt prayers in Scripture: We are powerless before this vast multitude that is coming against us. We ourselves do not know what to do, so our eyes are turned toward you (2 Chron 20:12).

King though he was, Jehoshaphat didnt hesitate to admit this enemy utterly blocked his royal vision. In looking to the Lord, though, he saw the path forward more clearly than he himself could have imagined. The spirit of the Lord, speaking through Jahaziel, assured Jehoshaphat that he was on the right track: The Lord says to you: Do not fear or be dismayed at the sight of this vast multitude, for the battle is not yours but Gods (2 Chron 20:15).

Jehoshaphat obeyed, and appointed a chorus of people to praise and worship the Lord as the army marched forth. As they lifted their voices, the Lord laid an ambush against the enemy troops, and each helped destroy the other (2 Chron 20:22, 23). So complete was the triumph that it took Judah three days to gather the spoils (2 Chron 20:25).

Afterwards, the people assembled in the Valley of Berakah, the name of which means blessing in Hebrew. They returned in exultation to Jerusalem, for the Lord had given them joy over their enemies (2 Chron 20:27) and he who himself is the Way (Jn 14:6) will do the same for us, if only we will fix our eyes on him alone.

Steak House Ribera: Wrestling’s spiritual home in Japan – The Japan Times

Hey, you!

Thats right you, the puny weakling reading this article! You think this is a story about vegan food? Wrong! This is a story about professional wrestling and meat!

Its also a story about a small, family-run steakhouse in Tokyo whose name has acquired legendary status around the globe through word of mouth alone.

We didnt set out to become famous, says Toshihiko Yamaguchi, who runs the Meguro branch of Steak House Ribera, which has become something of a pilgrimage site for professional wrestlers from all over the world. Wrestlers from overseas just came here and took the place to their hearts.

If youre not a fan of wrestling, chances are youve never heard of Steak House Ribera. Yamaguchis father, Norikazu, opened the first branch, which has room for around 10 customers seated along a counter, in Tokyos Gotanda area in 1972. A second, which seats around 30 and is situated about a 20-minute walk from Meguro Station, opened five years later.

Managing a legacy: Toshihiko Yamaguchi, who now runs the Meguro branch of Steak House Ribera, grew up surrounded by professional wrestlers. | Yoshiaki Miura

The elder Yamaguchi originally had no interest in wrestling, but his restaurants destiny was shaped by a random visit by American grappler Bruiser Brody in the late 1970s. Brody, who was on the lookout for some steak during a trip to Tokyo, was so enamored by Ribera that he asked Yamaguchi to make him a jacket with the restaurants name on it. Norikazu obliged and gave it to Brody as a present.

Brody began wearing the jacket at wrestling shows around the world, which aroused the curiosity of other wrestlers, who had never heard of Steak House Ribera. Gradually, they began to check the place out for themselves whenever they visited Tokyo, and Yamaguchi created more jackets to give to wrestlers as presents.

Before long, visiting Ribera had become a rite of passage for overseas wrestlers making the trip to Japan, and the satin bomber jacket with the bulls-head logo on the breast became a must-have item for any self-respecting wrestler.

Todays wrestlers started off as fans, and they grew up seeing people like Brody and Hulk Hogan wearing Ribera jackets, says the younger Yamaguchi. Its often said that for a wrestler, being given your own Ribera jacket is proof that youve made it.

We dont sell the jackets, he continues. We give them as presents, as a token of our appreciation. If we thought about it only in terms of publicity, the wrestlers would see through it. Thats not our intention. It started purely with us wanting to give Brody a present. More than the publicity, it made us happy to see Brody wearing the jacket in wrestling magazines. That feeling was what made us want to give out more.

Yamaguchi says that thousands of wrestlers have visited Ribera over the years, and the photos that cover the walls, ceiling and shop front including stars like Hogan, The Rock, The Undertaker and John Cena, all clad in Ribera jackets bear testament to the restaurants standing in the wrestling world.

Also making several appearances in the photos alongside the wrestlers at various stages of his life is the younger Yamaguchi himself. Now 45, he grew up in an environment where visits from star grapplers from overseas were a regular occurrence, and he was even invited to stay twice at the Minneapolis home of wrestler Road Warrior Animal.

Having been around professional wrestlers his whole life, Yamaguchi says there is often a gap between their public image and reality.

Among the wrestlers I met when I was younger, you would get two types, he says. Some played the part of villains, but in real life they were very serious. They were the complete opposite of how they appeared in the ring. Others would finish their match and then go out drinking and carousing in Roppongi, then get up for their next match without going to bed. Some looked like hellraisers, but actually they would go straight back to their hotel after their matches. It was interesting, the different types you would get.

Yamaguchi says trouble was not unheard of during that period, and the police would have to be called in if wrestlers with a real-life grudge happened to show up at Ribera at the same time and things got out of hand.

Nowadays, wrestlers from overseas visit Ribera less frequently, with the number of shows they do in Japan far fewer than in the golden age of the 1980s and 90s. The majority of Riberas current customers have little interest in wrestling, and many even wonder who the hulking characters flexing their muscles in the photos are.

Instead, they come for the simple menu, based around good-quality steak, which you can order in half- or full-pound cuts. The ambitious can tackle Riberas eating challenge: Those who can eat three servings of jumbo steak and rice within 30 minutes win 10,000 (and the meal for free).

For overseas wrestlers visiting Japan, however, Ribera will always be their spiritual home.

I cant count the number of wrestlers who have been here, says the younger Yamaguchi. There arent really any famous wrestlers from overseas who havent been here.

Its a real honor, he continues. It wasnt something that we set out to make happen. We werent trying to use the wrestlers to become famous. They just liked the place. It makes me really proud that these people would come all the way here from their own countries.

In line with the nationwide state of emergency declared on April 16, the government is strongly requesting that residents stay at home whenever possible and refrain from visiting bars, restaurants, music venues and other public spaces.

Letter to the Editor: Liberals trying to push communist ideas – Delaware State News – Delaware State News

It was nice to see that Mike Apgar survived our initial wave of the COVID-19 virus. Im sad to see, however, that nothing happened to assuage his delusional hatred (Hail to Mr. Tough Guy, our divider in chief, June 17) for a person whose only offense was defeating a lying, traitorous Democrat, Hillary Clinton.

I particularly enjoy how the party line is so easily parroted by the liberal left wing. The most glaring was Mr. Apgars blind insistence on the mainstream media feed that all the demonstrations were about the summer of love and singing Kumbaya. Perhaps a trip to New York or Seattle in person might actually enlighten him, though I doubt it.

The distortions of fact and outright lies to push a communist agenda is simply amazing. No president has ever endured the continual harangue that President Trump has. The Constitution was subverted before the president was inaugurated. Using a fake dossier that the former secretary of state (who clandestinely sold a third of Americas uranium to Russia) had paid for, the Democrats began a Russian collusion scheme.

For three-quarters of his term, the president fought that, while managing to rid America of burgeoning bureaucratic requirements, bring about unmatched economic development and bring back manufacturers whod left during the previous eight years. A former vice president, having openly admitted to committing quid pro quo to stop investigation of his son, claimed that the president had committed quid pro quo in investigating his lawlessness.

President Trump closes the border to protect the nation from the COVID-19 virus and is castigated as racist and xenophobic. Yet when that move proved true, he was skewered for not having done it sooner. Forced to literally close the country, he halved the doom-and-gloom medias economic impact forecast. Unemployment was at its lowest point in 50 years, but just as soon as businesses were forced to close, these same doomsayers started blaming the president as jobs numbers plunged.

Now, Mr. Apgar plays the Democrat sound bite that the president hid in the bunker when his peaceful protesters tried to storm the White House grounds. (For someone whose cherished candidate has spent four months in his basement, he ignored that no president is given a choice by the Secret Service when and if he is taken to the bunker, as was the case here.) Presidents dont hide, they are protected.

Mr. Apgar is likely to have spent four years trying to set brush fires in peoples minds while one of our greatest presidents has, without a single Democrat supporting him, rebuilt this nations standing throughout the world, while waving what the former First Lady referred to as that damned flag.

During the McCarthy witch hunts of the 1950s, he was finally exposed by Boston lawyer, Joseph Welch, who stopped the proceedings and said, Let us not assassinate this lad further, Senator. You have done enough. Have you no sense of decency? Thats the question I would love to ask these rabid liberals, but sadly, I fear I already know their answer.

Far-Right US Facebook Groups Pivot to Attacks on Black Lives Matter – Voice of America

CHICAGO, ILLINOIS - A loose network of Facebook groups that took root across the country in April to organize protests over coronavirus stay-at-home orders has become a hub of misinformation and conspiracy theories that have pivoted to a variety of new targets. Their latest: Black Lives Matter and the nationwide protests of racial injustice.

These groups, which now boast a collective audience of more than 1 million members, are still thriving after most states started lifting virus restrictions.

And many have expanded their focus.

One group transformed itself last month from "Reopen California" to "California Patriots Pro Law & Order," with recent posts mocking Black Lives Matter or changing the slogan to "White Lives Matter." Members have used profane slurs to refer to Black people and protesters, calling them "animals," "racist" and "thugs" a direct violation of Facebook's hate speech standards.

Others have become gathering grounds for promoting conspiracy theories about the protests, suggesting protesters were paid to go to demonstrations and that even the death of George Floyd, an unarmed Black man who died in the custody of Minneapolis police, was staged.

An Associated Press review of the most recent posts in 40 of these Facebook groups most of which were launched by conservative groups or pro-gun activists found the conversations largely shifted last month to attacking the nationwide protests over the killing of Black men and women after Floyd's death.

Facebook users in some of these groups post hundreds of times a day in threads often seen by members only and shielded from public view.

"Unless Facebook is actively looking for disinformation in those spaces, they will go unnoticed for a long time and they will grow," said Joan Donovan, the research director at the Harvard Kennedy School's Shorenstein Center on Media, Politics, and Public Policy. "Over time, people will drag other people into them and they will continue to organize."

Facebook said it is aware of the collection of reopen groups, and is using technology as well as relying on users to identify problematic posts. The company has vowed in the past to look for material that violates its rules in private groups as well as in public places on its site. But the platform has not always been able to deliver on that promise.

Shortly after the groups were formed, they were rife with coronavirus misinformation and conspiracy theories, including assertions that masks are "useless," the U.S. government intends to forcibly vaccinate people and that COVID-19 is a hoax intended to hurt President Donald Trump's re-election chances this fall.

Posts in these private groups are less likely to be scrutinized by Facebook or its independent fact-checkers, said Donovan. Facebook enlists media outlets around the world, including The Associated Press, to fact check claims on its site. Members in these private groups have created an echo chamber and tend to agree with the posts, so are therefore less likely to flag them for Facebook or fact-checkers to review, Donovan added.

At least one Facebook group, ReOpen PA, asked its 105,000 members to keep the conversation focused on reopening businesses and schools in Pennsylvania, and implemented rules to forbid posts about the racial justice protests as well as conspiracy theories about the efficacy of masks.

But most others have not moderated their pages as closely.

For example, some groups in New Jersey, Texas and Ohio have labeled systemic racism a hoax. A member of the California Facebook group posted a widely debunked flyer that says "White men, women and children, you are the enemy," which was falsely attributed to Black Lives Matter. Another falsely claimed that a Black man was brandishing a gun outside the St. Louis mansion where a white couple confronted protesters with firearms. Dozens of users in several of the groups have pushed an unsubstantiated theory that liberal billionaire George Soros is paying crowds to attend racial justice protests.

Facebook members in two groups Wisconsinites Against Excessive Quarantine and Ohioans Against Excessive Quarantine also regularly refer to protesters as "animals," "thugs," or "paid" looters.

In the Ohio group, one user wrote on May 31: "The focus is shifted from the voice of free people rising up against tyranny ... to lawless thugs from a well known racist group causing violence and upheaval of lives."

Those two pages are part of a network of groups in Ohio, Wisconsin, Minnesota, New York and Pennsylvania created by conservative activist Ben Dorr, who has for years raised money to lobby on hot-button conservative issues like abortion or gun rights. Their latest cause pushing for governors to reopen their states has attracted hundreds of thousands of followers in the private Facebook groups they launched.

Private groups that balloon to that size, with little oversight, are like "creepy basements" where extremist views and misinformation can lurk, said disinformation researcher Nina Jankowicz, a fellow at the nonpartisan Wilson Center, a Washington, D.C., think tank.

"It's sort of a way that the platforms are enabling some of the worst actors to stay on it," said Jankowicz. "Rather than being de-platformed they can organize."

Pence and Biden focus on police, economy in Pa. events – WHYY

He also pushed for strong crackdowns on drug-related crimes repudiating a growing coalition of progressive prosecutors like Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner, who are pushing for decarceration and decriminalization for nonviolent offenses.

Pences remarks were in the same vein. He promised the crowd that the Trump administration would never defund police not now, not ever.

We live in a time when the radical left is presenting the American people with one false choice after another, Pence said. Like lately weve been hearing people say weve got to choose between funding our police and funding our communities.

Philadelphia and many other cities have, indeed, been negotiating rerouting funding for police to other community programs that are also intended to reduce crimes though support for those changes have come in large part from mainstream politicians.

Phillys recent budget, for instance, restored some proposed cuts to arts and affordable housing while axing a proposed boost to police funding.

City resident Jackie Kradzinski, who watched Pences speech with her family, said in her mind, Trump is the only candidate for a police-supporting voter.

This government supports our police, said Kradzinski, whose son and daughter both work in law enforcement in Philadelphia. Thats what we need. We need that backing for our cops.

As the vice president spoke, a crowd of FOP supporters outside the lodge grew unruly as a small group of Black Lives Matter protesters approached them. The crowd included groups of bikers and men representing the group the Proud Boys, which the Southern Poverty Law Center describes as a hate group and FBI documents labeled as extremist (though FBI officials later walked that back). They were heard hurling insults at protesters by a WHYY photographer on the scene.

Meanwhile, up near Scranton, Biden was keeping his focus firmly on the economy. At his Dunmore stop, the former vice president took a tour of McGregor Industries, a specialty metal fabricator headquartered there.

In a speech afterward, he rolled out a $700 billion plan aimed at forcing more companies to stop outsourcing manufacturing jobs to other countries.

The proposal includes putting $400 billion into American concrete, steel and cement, and another $300 billion into the development of new technology, like electric cars and 5G internet.

Biden said he also wants to shift Trumps trade deals and stem dependence on China for goods.

[Trump] promised to bring back jobs, but manufacturing was in a recession even before COVID-19. He promised to buy American, but then he let federal contractors double the rate of offshoring jobs in his first eighteen months, Biden said. Im going to change that. Were going to double to tax on foreign profits so we dont encourage people to leave and build abroad.

The spate of action on both sides of the aisle in Pennsylvania comes as Bidens campaign tries to capitalize on Trumps dipping poll numbers.

Biden leads Trump by 6.5 points in an average of recent polls of Pennsylvania voters. Its a strong position for the former vice president, according to Chris Borick, a pollster at Muhlenberg College.

The Democratic and Republican campaigns are competing for similar ground. Pence met with business leaders and Philadelphias police union, and Biden targeted some of the working-class voters Hillary Clinton lost to Trump in 2016.

Borick said all of this is calculated to shift the razor-thin margins by which Pennsylvania swung Republican in 2016. For instance, he said, the Trump campaigns decision to send Pence to Chester County which is trending left and to overwhelmingly blue Philadelphia speaks to a desire to chip away at the edges of the Democratic bloc.

If you can get even a sliver of votes from a place like Philadelphia in a way greater than you did in 2016, its valuable, he added. All votes count the same.

Based on its recent messaging, the Trump campaign has identified two policy areas as winning issues among blue-leaning voters: economics and law and order. And Borick said thats why Biden has to take on the president on those same exact issues.

I think when you look at the presidents standing, economic issues, despite the downturn, remain one of the more positive sides, so that could be a potential weakness for Vice President Biden, Borick said. Speaking on economic issues in key areas of a swing state makes sense.

He added that on at least one issue, Trump seems to be going firmly against the preferences of most Americans: coronavirus safety.

Even though Republicans and Democrats have starkly different views on mask-wearing, he said, polling shows that public opinion tends to align more with Bidens public health-informed approach.

Those partisan differences were clear at Pences FOP rally. Of the roughly 100 people who filled the small, enclosed auditorium at FOP headquarters, only a handful wore masks.

It was enough to draw the attention of Mayor Jim Kenney, who said the Trump campaigns predilection for indoor events during a pandemic doesnt make any sense to anyone though he noted, the FOP lodge is private property.

The entire state of Pennsylvania is still under a mask-wearing order from Democratic Gov. Tom Wolf, and Philadelphia never reopened fully as case numbers rose again after a period of decline. City Health Commissioner Thomas Farley recently said that since Philadelphia is averaging more than 100 new cases per day, he considers it to be in the throes of a second COVID-19 wave.

A spokesperson for Pence said officially, the vice president has encouraged all Americans to follow state and local guidance. His office said he wore a mask when he wasnt speaking.

That guidance wasnt enforced or posted anywhere at the event.

The PlayStation 5 may play PS1, PS2, and PS3 games via the cloud – The Next Web

Sony has been revealing more details about the PlayStation 5 and its games, looking towards the future. However, someone recently unearthed a patent that suggests the company is also interested in its past: namely, PS5 may have more games on it than just PS5 and Ps4 games.

The patent was revealed by a Twitter user called @renka_schedule. If you translate from Japanese, it says a number of PS1, PS2, and PS3 games can be stored in the cloud, and can be played via a virtual machine that emulates the original consoles operating systems.

They also followed it up with more patent documents, one of which suggests these games may come with short demos you can play before buying them.

Usual disclaimers: this is just a patent, it doesnt mean Sony is actually going todoanything with the technology, it may not even be real, etc etc. Still, lets imagine how it would change the console race if this turned out to be a real feature of the PS5. This would substantially raise the PS5s usability, and itd be great for us, the gamers.

Read:Here are the Xbox Series X games we think Microsoft will show off on July 23

Backwards compatibility has always been the area where the PlayStation has lagged behind the Xbox One. The XB1 is compatible with original Xbox and 360 discs, giving interested gamers a reason to keep them and still get value out of them. The PS4, on the other hand, only ever allowed PS3 games via the PS Now streaming service. While theres nothing wrong with PS Now, it is essentially making you pay to play PS3 classics you might already own.

So if,if Sony could make this tech work, and if it turns out to be more than just a fancy PS Now upgrade, itd be a huge advantage. Imagine being able to say you can play hundreds of games on the PS5 out of the box, rather than just the few thatll be available at launch. Also, itd just be great to see Sony pay tribute to the classic games we otherwise can only play if we take out an old console or (horrors) own a PS Vita.

Also, just by coincidence, Sony also tweeted an image of what game boxes for the PS5 will look like. I suppose even if we never get full backwards compatibility on the PS5, its games will look pretty.

But you tell me: would this raise the PS5 in your esteem at all? Ping me on Twitter and let me know.

Space ‘fireworks’ highlight the violent birth of a star cluster in ALMA, Hubble image – Firstpost

Celestial fireworks in a star clustercalled G286.21+0.17 have now been observed by astronomers.

TheAtacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) radio telescope in Chile joined hands with the Hubble Space Telescope to create a mosaic of the star cluster, whichappearedlike 'cosmic fireworks' highlighting purple streamers and sizzling stars, as per a public release of the image.

Most stars in the universe, the Sun included, were born in huge star clusters, according to a Science Daily report. While the clusters are the building blocks of galaxies, their formation still remains shrouded in mystery.

The cluster itself is located in the Carina region of our galaxy, about 8000 light-years away.

A statement released by the National Radio Astronomy Observatoryexplained that ALMA was able to capture "dense clouds made of molecular gas" (the purple fireworks streamers), while stars in the image arevisible ininfrared light, as seen by the Hubble Telescope.

"This image shows stars in various stages of formation within this single cluster,"Yu Cheng, lead author of the study, from the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, saidin the statement.

Cheng went on to add that the process may take at least a million years to complete.

Co-author Jonathan Tan of Chalmers University in Sweden and the University of Virginiasaid that the image highlights how dynamic and chaotic the process of the birth of a star really is.

"We see competing forces in action: gravity and turbulence from the cloud on one side, and stellar winds and radiation pressure from the young stars on the other,"Tansaid.

Life on the Vice-Presidential Short List – The New York Times

There will be blood tests. Interrogations about junior high. An analysis of tax returns.

It is an experience Joseph R. Biden Jr. knows all too well from his time on the vice-presidential short list 12 years ago.

Much about Mr. Bidens own search for a running mate has been nontraditional. He has publicly mused about his criteria. He is not considering men. Above all, his choice could be the most important in years: At 77, Mr. Biden has said he views himself as a transition candidate. Left unsaid: His vice president could very well end up being the president next.

Yet as much as Mr. Bidens process is unique, its contours are familiar. Late last month, he told a local television station that his campaign had begun doing the background checks the latest sign that he is moving toward a short list of candidates.

If history is a guide, Mr. Bidens top contenders should expect to submit themselves to a process that veterans liken to a series of graphic medical procedures. Extraneous? Maybe. But, well, sometimes thats the vice presidency, too.

They basically are disassembling your entire life, said Kathleen Sebelius, a former Democratic governor of Kansas who, along with Mr. Biden, was vetted extensively by the Obama campaign in 2008. It was as intrusive and probing as anything Ive ever been through or would hope to ever go through again.

Evan Bayh, a former Democratic senator from Indiana and a repeat vice-presidential contestant, somewhat famously compared the vetting process to a colonoscopy except they use the Hubble telescope on you.

Indeed, when Barack Obama called Mr. Biden in June 2008 to request permission to vet him, Mr. Biden initially said no. Finally, he wrote in his 2017 memoir, I agreed to go through the vetting process, but not with a whole lot of enthusiasm.

Ms. Sebelius said Mr. Obama had called her when she was at a hotel for a meeting. Like Mr. Biden, she tried to persuade him not to vet her. I spent a little bit of time telling him why that was a terrible idea, she recalled. He was undeterred: A member of his vetting team was waiting to speak to her in a room downstairs.

One of the cardinal rules of the process is secrecy, and nearly everyone obeys. Most potential running mates do not speak about the search, if they acknowledge they are being vetted at all. Bob Kerrey, the former Nebraska senator who was vetted by Bill Clinton in 1992, said he flew on a friends private plane to the governors mansion in Little Rock, Ark., for a meeting so almost no one would know where he was.

Presidential candidates consider many factors when selecting their running mates. They are not always political. Mr. Kerrey, for instance, said he suspected early on he wasnt getting the job. For one, he wasnt married at the time and he worried that the optics in a photograph would be off.

You need to have Bill and Hillary and somebody and somebody, Mr. Kerrey said. You dont want Bill and Hillary and Bob.

Vetting procedures have become increasingly rigorous, in part because campaigns are wary of what can happen if details are overlooked. More recently, the availability of potentially incriminating details on the internet has made vetting seem more imperative than ever lest anyone dig up a surprise. (Of course, the election of President Trump showed that voters might also shrug off what might once have been disqualifying information.)

Tim Pawlenty, a former Minnesota governor, recalled scrambling with his wife, Mary, in 2008 to provide all the information John McCain requested as part of his vetting.

At one point during the process, our entire living room was covered with documents as Mary and I organized them, typed up answers to the lengthy questionnaire and organized it all into 3-ring binders, he said in an email. They stayed up late and subsisted on pizza as they raced to meet the campaigns deadlines.

Julin Castro, whom Mrs. Clinton vetted extensively in 2016, said her campaign had given him a survey seeking answers to more than 120 questions about his personal, political and financial history.

At one point during the interview to go over the responses, one of the questioners spotted Mr. Castros cellphone. What would the questioner find, he asked, if he were to take Mr. Castros phone and go through it right now? (No, Mr. Castro did not provide the answer to The New York Times.)

You recognize the gravity of this process, he said. But it still has this spy thriller, cloak-and-dagger aspect to it all.

With the global pandemic sidelining much of Mr. Bidens in-person presidential campaign, his veepstakes has become a welcome throwback to normal post-primary political activity.

Already, one of Mr. Bidens top contenders, Senator Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota, has formally withdrawn from contention. In an interview with MSNBC last month, she referred to the calls for racial justice that have swept the country since the death of George Floyd at the hands of the Minneapolis police, saying she believed that this is a moment to put a woman of color on that ticket.

Faux modesty is also part of the game: Everyone whose name is on a list almost always declares themselves honored just to be thought of at all. When Senator Catherine Cortez Masto of Nevada said in May she was withdrawing from consideration, she said that it was an honor to be considered but that she wanted to keep her focus on her home state.

A brief survey of short-listed names over the years reveals some perennial participants. Mr. Pawlenty, for instance, was vetted by both Mr. McCain and Mitt Romney. Mr. Bayh was seriously considered by Al Gore and Mr. Obama.

Mr. Biden has also at times mentioned some familiar names, including Senator Jeanne Shaheen of New Hampshire, who was one of Mr. Gores finalists. (Ms. Shaheen, however, reportedly told Mr. Biden she was not interested in serving as his vice president.) But his pledge to choose a woman has eliminated most of the usual names from contention.

Mr. Obama called Mr. Biden to tell him he had gotten the job as Mr. Biden was waiting at a dentist's office while his wife, Jill, was having a root canal. Despite Mr. Bidens reluctance just weeks earlier, he was delighted. I accepted without hesitation, Mr. Biden said. It felt good to say yes.

But as it most often does, the process for most of Mr. Bidens prospects will likely end in disappointment and possibly some relief.

James Stavridis, a retired admiral who was vetted by Mrs. Clintons campaign, said it had been so intrusive and secretive that he jokingly told a friend, the former C.I.A. spokesman Bill Harlow, that he hoped he was really providing all the information to the Clinton campaign and not Russian intelligence.

When he was not chosen, he and Mr. Harlow decided to write a humorous novel about the Russians penetrating the U.S. V.P. selection process. In the proposal for the book, called The Veepstakes, they described the tone as stylistically, an entertainment la Chris Buckley or Elmore Leonard.

The proposal was widely rejected, Mr. Stavridis said. The premise was too implausible.

Mr. Castro professed to being disappointed when Mrs. Clinton ultimately selected Senator Tim Kaine of Virginia but said he was glad that all of that speculation was over.

The experience also came with an unexpected benefit. As part of his vetting, Mr. Castro had to get a blood test, forcing him to confront a phobia he had harbored since he was a young child.

The best thing was that I had to get over that fear, he said. It certainly wasnt that I got the job, because I didnt.

Tesla electric hatchback: Elon Musk says new car might be designed in Germany – Electrek

Tesla CEO Elon Musk says that the automaker might design and engineer a small electric hatchback in Germany.

Earlier today, Electrek reported that Volvo bought a Tesla Model Y in the US and brought it to Sweden, presumably to reverse engineer it.

Commenting on the story, Musk said:

Berlin Model Y is the one to watch. That is a revolution in automotive body engineering (finally).

The CEO seems to imply that Volvo should instead take a look at the version of the Model Y that Tesla plans to build at Gigafactory Berlin since it will be greatly improved though its not available yet so they cant really do that.

Following the comment, Musk was asked if Tesla could build a smaller European style hatchback and the CEO responded:

At the very least, it sounds like Musk is interested in the idea.

Lately, the CEO has been discussing not only building cars where they are building new factories, in Germany and China, but also designing and engineering cars in those markets.

In China, Tesla has been taking design submissions for a Chinese-made small electric car.

Musk already announced plans for Tesla to open a European design center in Germany.

Now it sounds like the design and engineering team that Tesla plans to hire at the location could end up designing a smaller electric hatchback.

Tesla fans have been asking for a small electric hatchback for years now and I think this is the first time that Elon has openly talked about the possibility.

It looks like we might be getting it from China based on the drawing that the automaker released for a Chinese-designed Tesla vehicle, but now it sounds like this new German-designed Tesla car could be a whole separate vehicle program.

Those vehicles are also exciting because they likely mean that Tesla is thinking about going downmarket from Model 3, which is something that Elon has pushed against in the past.

Could you imagine a Tesla 5-door hatchback with 250 miles of range starting at $30,000? That would be a killer.

Tesla could also offer a dual motor Performance version for $40,000+ to create a hot hatch that would just be an autocross machine.

I basically want Tesla to do their own version of the Zoe RS hot hatch that Renault has been teasing for years but never released.

The Zacks Analyst Blog Highlights: Tesla, Toyota, Exxon Mobil, Nikola and Ford Motor Company – Yahoo Finance

For Immediate Release

Chicago, IL July 10, 2020 Zacks.com announces the list of stocks featured in the Analyst Blog. Every day the Zacks Equity Research analysts discuss the latest news and events impacting stocks and the financial markets. Stocks recently featured in the blog include: Tesla TSLA, Toyota TM, Exxon Mobil XOM, Nikola NKLA and Ford Motor Company F.

Here are highlights from Thursdays Analyst Blog:

Will Tesla Mean the End of Oil?

Tesla, a company that built its millionth car (less than 10% of Toyotas annual volume) earlier this year, is now the most valuable automotive enterprise on earth. The financial world is pricing in an imminent electronic vehicle (EV) takeover and the eventual obsolescence of oil.

Oil stocks have been stumbling since their high in the summer of 2014. Global oil production has been on the rise for decades, but it appears that demand has been lagging output, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA).

The world is working towards sustainability, moving away from fossil fuels like oil & gas. EVs have been taking center stage in this push towards a more sustainable planet. Tesla has been the primary beneficiary of this movement as its market value soars past the old oil giant Exxon Mobil, whose market value has plummeted 58% since its 2014 high (down 42% in 2020 alone).

Tesla and the rise of EVs are disrupting not only the automotive industry but long-term oil demand. We are seeing a massive economic shift towards tech, and it doesnt look like oil is on board.

The COVID Effect

This pandemic has seemingly compressed 5 years of digitalization into only 5 months, and electric cars have continued to perform with this tech-driven tail wind filling its performance sails. Despite the economic recession, Tesla was able to deliver over 90,000 vehicles, blowing analysts 72,000 delivery estimates out of the water.

The world wants EVs, and with Teslas China Gigafactory ramping up production and the Berlin Gigafactory anticipating to start production by next, they are ready to give it to them.

Tesla is not the only EV beneficiary of this tech driving pandemic. Nikola recently debuted its shares to the public through an unconventional acquisition, and the share price has been flying ever since. Nikola, a company that has yet to produce a single-vehicle, is now valued at roughly the market cap as the more than a century-old Ford Motor Company.

Future Of Oil

Oil businesses used to be the most valuable companies in the S&P 500 even a decade ago, with money pouring into these enterprises, like water from a spring. Historically, as the world population has grown, so has its appetite for oil, but an economic shift is upon us.

The oil & gas industry is just beginning to be uprooted by renewable energies and electric cars. Our oil appetite is dwindling, very slowly let me add, but still diminishing. I expect to see continued consolidation in this field in the years to come, as it is typical of maturing to declining industries.

The Takeaway

The global pandemic may have catalyzed the current slump in gas prices, but it foreshadows what is to come. Innovation-driven businesses like Tesla and maybe even Nikola will drive growth through the next decade while oil companies are forced to cut costs and scale to drive shareholder returns.

Suicide of Egyptian activist Sarah Hegazi exposes the ‘freedom and violence’ of LGBTQ Muslims in exile – The Ridgefield Press

(The Conversation is an independent and nonprofit source of news, analysis and commentary from academic experts.)

Ahmad Qais Munhazim, Thomas Jefferson University

(THE CONVERSATION) LGBTQ communities worldwide are mourning the death of 30-year-old Sarah Hegazi, a queer Egyptian activist who ended her life on June 14, 2020.

Hegazi, who had been jailed for promoting what the Egyptian state called sexual deviance after raising a rainbow flag during a concert in Cairo in 2017, was released on bail three months after her arrest.

Shortly afterwards, she she sought asylum in Canada. As the only queer woman among the 57 LGBTQ individuals arrested in the concert crackdown, Hegazi became prominent in queer activism circles in Egypt and beyond.

In Canada, Hegazi escaped the violence of the Egyptian state but not, as she wrote in a 2018 essay, the post-traumatic stress disorder, depression and loneliness caused by her past. Like many queer and trans people living in exile, Hegazi felt rejected by her own people yet mourned the home she left behind.

She yearned for the land that expelled her. In one Instagram post, from August 20, 2019, Hegazi wrote that she hoped her grandmother would be alive to greet her when she got home to Egypt.

That reunion would never happen.

Perpetual rejection

A queer suicide during Pride, a month dedicated to celebrating LGBTQ lives and resistance, is a painful thing to process, made harder by the coronavirus lockdown. For queer and trans Muslims in isolation, separated from their chosen communities in what may or may not be accepting family homes, mourning Hegazis death has been a lonely, even secretive, process.

As a queer Muslim, I feel Hegazis death deeply. Back in 2012, I left my home country, Afghanistan, and later sought asylum in the U.S. Now, I live in the United States, but I dont truly belong anywhere.

[Deep knowledge, daily. Sign up for The Conversations newsletter.]

That alienation drives my academic research on how political violence and displacement intercede in the lives of LGBTQ Muslims. I recognize Hegazis suicide as the tragic result of the discrimination and repudiation people like us face our entire lives.

In her suicide note, Hegazi apologized for being too weak to resist the freedom of death.

To my siblings, I tried to make it, and I failed. To my friends, the experience is cruelforgive me, she wrote. To the world, you were cruel to a great extent, but I forgive.

The cruelty Hegazi experienced is echoed by many of the 36 LGBTQ Muslims I interviewed for my current research project on queer and trans Muslims living as refugees in the United States. Most said they had been rejected by friends and family because of their sexuality or gender identity. However, many also chose to forgive, as Hegazi did.

We continue to love the family that abandons us, said Hamza, a 24-year-old Afghan refugee I interviewed in 2017 in Fremont, California. We long for the home that pushes us into exile. We miss friends that wouldnt even attend our funerals.

This rejection stems from homophobia, which is rooted in both the interpretation of religious texts and in the anti-LGBTQ laws of some Southwest Asian and North African countries with colonial histories. As a result, some queer and trans Muslims and Arabs eventually try to escape the countries that criminalize their gender identity and sexual orientation.

While there are no statistics on how many LGBTQ Muslims are refugees, a 2019 United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees report says ever more LGBTQ people are fleeing persecution worldwide.

Unending dance

Queer Muslim refugees who make it to Western countries may find that rejection has followed them in a new form: Islamophobia. Meanwhile, in LGBTQ communities, being Muslim and queer is seen as paradoxical.

As a result, queer and trans Muslims in exile in the West become outsiders twice over.

I was called a terrorist by a group of white gays in a bar in Washington, D.C, Abdullah, a 30-year-old Iraqi-American, told me in 2017.

My interviews reveal that LBGTQ Muslim refugees are navigating two distinct and difficult spaces: the homophobia of their birthplaces and the Islamophobia in exile.

Queer Muslim exiles cross these borders on a daily basis, and its a complicated process. Their families are not merely a point of oppression, they tell me, nor is the queer community pure freedom. Rather, both environments pose certain constraints.

Freedom and violence are an unending dance.

Where do we belong?

For Sarah Hegazi, the violence did not end with death. Homophobic cruelty continues on social media, with some commentators telling people not to pray for Hegazi because being queer and committing suicide are both kabir, or major sins, in strict interpretations of Islamic law.

Hegazis own last post on social media was on June 12, two days before her death. Under a photo of her lying peacefully on her back in lush grass, smiling to a blue sky, Hegazi wrote on Instagram that, The sky is more beautiful than the earth. And I want the sky, not the earth.

I have heard versions of Hegazis pained laments before, in my own head. I have felt them in my own exiled body, lying in bed.

For queer and trans Muslims and Arabs, belonging is but a dream. Mostly we are just trying to survive.

Start-Up Nation does it again, this time Taiwan joins Global Finders – Geektime

The global crisis caused by the COVID-19 outbreak has triggered a demand for more innovative technologies and better tech collaboration across the board, as a way to combat the growing challenges we now face due to our new reality.

With this in mind, Israel's Start-Up Nation Finder, which is a non-profit organization designed to promote and connect investors and innovators to the Israeli high-tech ecosystem, announced a deal set in place to bring the same successful format to Taiwan. The agreement was signed with Taiwan's Innovation to Industry (i2i), which is a tech ecosystem builder that connects and supports stakeholders in Taiwan. i2i will launch the Global Finder platform - which tracks and promotes ecosystem development along with startup innovations - modeled after the successful Israeli platform, Start-Up Nation Finder.

Using a similar format to the Israeli one, i2i will map nearly 30,000 tech companies, hundreds of incubators and accelerators, and over 200 VCs that are active in the island nation's tech ecosystem, enabling them opportunities to develop strong global industry ties.

We have developed the Start-Up Nation Finder to help Israeli technological innovators establish stronger connections with the global large-scale technology users and investors. We believe that any growing ecosystem requires such a platform, which is why we have established Global Finder Network that elevates the visibility of growing innovative tech ecosystems around the world, and helps them expand their business opportunities," explained Prof. Eugene Kandel, CEO of Start-Up Nation Central.

The Israeli Start-Up Nation Finder showcases more than 6,500 tech companies, R&D centers, investors and tech communities to the global market, offering a model of startup seeding that provides a world of insight, challenges, solutions, trends, performance, and more. The Finder provides mostly investors, decision makers, and major conglomerates with vital data-driven investment and collaboration information.

Following the immense success of the Israeli model, Start-Up Nation Center (SNC) has launched similar programs in 4 other places including Thailand, New Zealand, and U.S. states Texas and Michigan with Taiwan now joining ad the 5th, all who attempt to adopt the innovation sharing model that is a proven method to better communicate tech across the global landscape. Continuing its mission, the SNC intends to keep expanding partnering relationships into other tech hubs around the world.

i2i also recently launched in Israel a first-of-its-kind program called IP LaunchPad with a goal to create stronger collaboration between Taiwanese tech and healthcare industries to Israeli innovation. This partnership program aims to connect Israeli startups with investors from Taiwan, offering the startups a preliminary foothold in the Asian market.

Dr. Gary Gong, Chairman of i2i, noted that "we look forward to exploring how we can further collaborate by connecting corporations, startups and investors through the Global Finder Network. Launching Global Finder in Taiwan continues our efforts to strengthen the collaboration with Israels tech sector, which is also evident in the recent launch of our unique IP LaunchPad innovation program that connects Israeli startups with Taiwanese ecosystem."

Background:Obesity and metabolic diseases including diabetes, hyperlipidemia, and hypertension are reportedly associated with an increased risk of psoriasis. However, few prospective studies have investigated the association of obesity and metabolic diseases with the risk of psoriasis.

Objective:To examine whether obesity or metabolic diseases increase the risk of psoriasis.

Methods:Participants were collected from 4 rounds (2001, 2005, 2009, and 2013) of the Taiwan National Health Interview Survey. Incident cases of psoriasis were identified from the National Health Insurance database. Participants were followed from the time of the National Health Interview Survey interview until December 31, 2017, or until a diagnosis of psoriasis was made or the participant died. The Cox regression model was used for the analyses.

Results:Of 60,136 participants, 406 developed psoriasis during 649,506 person-years of follow-up. Compared to participants with a BMI of 18.5-22.9, the adjusted hazard ratios (aHR) of psoriasis were 1.34 (95% CI 1.05-1.71) for a BMI of 25.0-29.9 and 2.70 (95% CI 1.95-3.72) for a BMI 30. Neither individual nor multiple metabolic diseases were associated with incident psoriasis. Participants with a BMI 30 were at significantly higher risk of both psoriasis without arthritis (aHR 2.60; 95% CI 1.85-3.67) and psoriatic arthritis (aHR 3.96; 95% CI 1.45-10.82).

Conclusion:Obesity, but not metabolic diseases, significantly increased the risk of psoriasis.

Keywords:Diabetes mellitus; Hyperlipidemia; Hypertension; Metabolic syndrome; Obesity; Psoriasis.

EDITORIAL: Verify before you share a lie – The Kingston Whig-Standard

Social media has become the shotgun, fire hose and megaphone for all messaging.

This power can have a tremendous positive impact on wrongs needing righting. Weve seen it in recent years with the #metoo movement, the reaction to the George Floyd killing and outing racists in their natural habitats.

Unfortunately, it can also amplify false allegations and outright lies spread equally by those with agendas and those with altruistic ideals.

This is especially true of issues and comments that elicit outrage. It can take less than an hour for a Tweet to rebound on the poster and come back to get them fired or charged. It happened recently with an ex-cop on a bike in the U.S. grabbing tape and posters from a young girl who was spreading the word about a Black Lives Matter protest. Some Twitter detective thought they identified the culprit and plastered his profile on social media. Turns out, it was the wrong guy, but not before the innocent man was sent death threats.

Weve learned that Facebooks content algorithm likes to send you content that they know will stir a reaction, and they dont care its real, fake or downright ridiculous, as long as you keep clicking and sharing. Its mathematically likely that many items pouring through the average Facebook feed are hot garbage.

Twitter is less prone to this chaos as people choose which accounts to follow. But sponsored Tweets are not selected and most share content worthy of account blocks.

Because we all have the power to amplify with the click of a button, its important to remember that the onus is on us to verify that what we are sharing is legitimate. We can ruin lives with a careless click.

The golden rule extends to social media. If we wouldnt want someone to falsely accuse you of a heinous act without direct evidence, perhaps we should give that courtesy to others.

Spinners and Losers: Sinn Fein cool the heat – Slugger O’Toole

As crematorium-[side]gate moves into its second week, and the legislature bit its gums into a non-legally binding motion, it appears as though the heat is shifting. The media are now fixating on two Belfast city council big hitters (BBC):

The Belfast Telegraph is reporting the councils chief executive Suzanne Wylie and director Nigel Grimshaw have lodged a formal grievance with a solicitor.

They are said to have warned they may resign if concerns are not resolved.

What I find remarkable is how quickly Sinn Fein successfully spun this one out of their court and into the laps of private citizens. The Beltel has in the past reported that the CEO is in receipt of a hefty 159k compensation package, but she is still a private citizen and should not be subjected to the same level of scrutiny as a democratically elected representative.

The attempts to shift the focus from SF reps began in earnest on the Nolan show when Mick made the point that there are elected councillors (a large contingent of whom are SF councillors) sitting on that council. The whole point of accountability in a democracy is for these servants of the ratepayer to bear some responsibility.

But responsibility is not the golden rule of Northern Ireland politics and so very cleverly we now have a situation where two bureaucrats have threatened very publicly to resign over this whole fiasco. Sam McBride has reported that they have even hired an independent PR firm rather than using the in-house council comms officers.

The RHI undertones couldnt be more apparent here, at this rate elected representatives will have to begin explaining to a befuddled public what they are actually for? If they dont read legislation and policy documents, dont hold public facilities to account like Roselawn and shift the blame to bureaucrats who feel the need to threaten resignation or retirement, then why have them? Sadly, this will brush the lips of many who feel frustrated with our political process.

The culture within our biggest council is about to take a serious hit, this year will see Belfast city reopen for its 280,000 people to re-emerge from a state of lockdown. Council officials are needed more than ever, and their top brass are feeling undermined because of an alleged public health breach by the Deputy First Minister and the Finance Minister of the regional assembly.

Yet as noted above the very same assembly simply slaps on the wrist two members of the executive it is solely tasked with holding to account. There is an acute risk of throwing the institutions into disarray at a time of maximum risk. I am aware that there are no quick fixes and that strategically the DUP have too much at stake to pull down the government.

What is now needed is for someone to take the mantle of leadership to close the book on this crisis, when appearing before the executive committee last week Arlene snapped when SF MLAs recalled the life and political origin story of Bobby Storey. This was juxtapositioned by a calm and collected Christopher Stalford MLA who read aloud a text message from a constituent so infuriated by the DFMs actions. I see no other alternative than, at the very least, an investigation by the Department of Justice or perhaps a full public inquiry with sweeping powers. Strap in, as this looks like a long journey ahead

INSIGHT: Marchar Jean was her school’s star pupil – today she’s trapped by a nonsensical system which is a stain on our nation – Bahamas Tribune

By Frederick R M SMITH, QC

Sadly, unnecessarily and illegally, the life of an innocent young Bahamian in waiting is in limbo!

As the following news story evidences, Marchar Jean, the Valedictorian from C. R. Walker Senior High School, is caught in an illegal bureaucratic trap forcing her to live an illegal purgatory of statelessness and unconstitutional discrimination! Please view her story on this news report.

Need For Efficiency at Immigration

I urge the Immigration Department to become more efficient in granting Belongers Permits to people born in The Bahamas of non-citizen parents, and to issue Certificates of Citizenship Registration to those applying between the ages of 18 to 19.

There are thousands of children in her position, under 18, unable to apply for registration and locked in Discrimination Limbo Land illegally foisted upon the public in a policy dreamt up in 2014 by former PLP Minister of Immigration Fred Mitchell [now a PLP Senator].

The Bahamas is now visiting these unfortunate children with, as the Catholics say, Original Sin.

They are being treated and presumed to be guilty as opposed to innocent.

Pass a Simple Citizenship Law

I urge this FNM government, as a matter of critical urgency to the lives of thousands of innocent children and adults, to pass a simple law that would make it so easy for thousands of people to live productive, positive, constructive lives instead of being overshadowed by a stupid, unnecessary, bureaucratic and cumbersome process of waiting for a piece of paper that says they belong in The Bahamas even though they are born here!

There would be no need to amend the Constitution! All that would be necessary would just be political will to respect such a law.

They would not have to apply to the Immigration Department for a Belongers Permit. Their lives would not be in limbo. They would not be constantly treated as second class citizens or outlaws!

And this Valedictorian, who has done nothing wrong except to be born of non-citizen parents, could simply go to the University of The Bahamas!

Such a law would reduce costs to the taxpayer of having to administerthe Belongers Permit system at the DOI. It would avoid all these children having to bear the challenging paper production process and costs of translations and certified copies of documents and papers to present to the government. It would save time for Immigration and Cabinet who would not have to process applications which they have to approve by law anyway. What a waste of public officials time.

It would also help to reduce the corruption that exists at the Immigration Department.

Pass a simple law that says once born in The Bahamas you are automatically Bahamian and you dont have to apply to anybody for a piece of paper.

Simple, easy, no cost to the government and taxpayer of having to process thousands of applications which keep thousands of young and adult lives in limbo!

End Mitchells Misery

This would be a positive step for this FNM government to take.It would end Mitchells 2014 policy that has made the lives of thousands of innocents miserable and unbearable.

Before Fred Mitchell introduced the illegal policy of requiring everybody having to have a piece of paper to be treated as a Bahamian, the government recognized and publicized that having a Birth Certificate was Your Passport to Citizenship!

We in the Bahamas need to be more compassionate, sensible and reasonable.

We should return to the pre-2014 position where the presentation of a Birth Certificate, evidencing that a person was born in the Bahamas whether their parents are citizens or not, means they are automatically treated as citizens of The Bahamas and could contribute to the growth of our nation and gave them the dignity to be equal citizens of this country.

We should stop this imbecilic, hurtful, inhuman and degrading treatment of children and adults who have done nothing wrong except to be bornhere of non-citizen parents!

To this day, hanging in Government offices, is an Official Bahamas Government Notice from the Registrar Generals office which shows what the policy of ALL governments of The Bahamas was before Fred Mitchell introduced his policy in 2014 requiring everybody to have a piece of paper that says theyre Bahamian or face being in limbo, detention and or deportation to countries they have never been to.

Ministers Johnson and Lloyd

Very regrettably, this FNM government, elected in May 2017, has continued this vile, degrading, illegal and demeaning PLP policy.

I cry shame on the FNM.

But they have it in their power to change this overnight.

Just like Fred Mitchell woke up one morning on the wrong side of bed and issued his illegal policy edict in November 2104, FNM Ministers Jeff Lloyd [Education] and Elsworth Johnson [Immigration] can wake up on the right side of bed and issue a policy statement and return us to normalcy.

History will judge all of these Ministers. I hope Ministers Lloyd and Johnson put themselves on the right side of Bahamian history! I remind them that Karma can be a Bitch!

This is a quick and easy fix. No legislation needed.

President Dr Rodney Smith, UB

I call on The University of The Bahamas to immediately end this policy and register Marshar Jean.

This policy of the University of the Bahamas is unconstitutional and illegal.

Its not the law, and Dr. Rodney Smith, President of UB, can also, hopefully find himself and UB on the right side of Bahamian history by ending an illegal discriminatory policy.

This is another quick and easy fix.

Prime Minister Minnis

Until such a law is passed, the FNM Government should return to the situation where the presentation of a Birth Certificate, evidencing that a person was born in The Bahamas, whether to parents who are citizens or not, means that they are automatically treated as citizens of The Bahamas and can contribute to the growth of our nation and allow them the dignity to be equal citizens of this country.

As before 2014, they could then get a drivers licence, a wedding licence, open a bank account, get a business licence, get a US visa, get a passport, travel, register and get a National Insurance card and GET a JOB! And, they would not have to hide and lurk in the shadows, live as presumed outlaws and the daily terror and fear of being picked up illegally by the Yellow Immigration Bus and carted off to the Carmichael Concentration Camp indefinitely.

This is another easy step for the government to take.

I invite PM Minnis to also put himself on the right side of history.

Reverse Fred Mitchells inhuman and degrading policy and revert to simply requiring proof of citizenship by a birth certificate.

And pass the simple law.

Frederick Smith born in Haiti - yet Bahamian! How perverse and insane is it that a person like me, who was born in Haiti, and who does not [because I am not legally required to] have a piece of paper to say that I am Bahamian Citizen am treated and function as such.

YET! A person born in The Bahamas, like this innocent Marshar Jean, who has a Bahamian Birth Certificate is not automatically treated as and deemed to be a Bahamian. This is the height of bureaucratic absurdity and Fred Mitchell is the culprit.

I cry shame on Fred Mitchell for this perverted affliction visited on these thousands of innocent Bahamians-in-Waiting.

It is the height of bureaucraticnonsense to require people born here to carry around a piece of paper proving they are Bahamian citizens. Most Bahamians do not have [and are not legally required to have] a paper that says I am a Citizen of The Bahamas. Being born in The Bahamas and having a birth certificate should be automatic proof, just like me, born in Haiti, to a Bahamian father means I am automatically Bahamian and treated as such.

I beg my FNM government to revert to reason, common sense, respect for the dignity of others and compassion.

Let the FNM be on the right side of Bahamian history.
