NASA completes investigation on flawed Boeing Starliner capsule test flight – Space.com

NASA has completed its investigation into Boeing's problematic first test flight of a Starliner crew capsule as the company and agency look toward a second test flight sometime this year.

The commercial crew vehicle, which Boeing developed for NASA to ferry astronauts to and from the space station, made its orbital uncrewed debut in December, lifting off from the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida. But the craft failed to reach the orbiting laboratory due to a series of glitches and software issues, an independent review team found.

Earlier this year, a NASA review of the flawed test flight identified 61 "corrective actions" for Boeing to address on Starliner. On Tuesday (July 7), NASA announced that that number has swelled by another 19 corrections, for a total of 80, after a second review.

The announcement came in a teleconference update with reporters on the test flight, called Orbital Flight Test 1 (OFT-1), as Boeing prepares for a do-over mission, OFT-2, later this year.

Boeing announced in April that it will conduct a second uncrewed flight test with Starliner to demonstrate that the spacecraft is safe and reliable before any astronauts ride it to space. However, a launch date for that OFT-2 mission has not yet been set. But the flight is likely to happen "toward the latter part of this year," Steve Stich, manager of NASA's Commercial Crew Program, said in Tuesday's teleconference.

"Today, we're sort of turning the page a bit from the investigation phase of OFT and moving into our hardware development," Stich said. "The spacecraft is coming along very well."

In February and March, NASA and Boeing revealed the results of separate investigations into two major anomalies that led to the partial failure of the OFT mission. First, Starliner's onboard timer drew an incorrect time from the Atlas V rocket shortly after it launched, and consequently, the spacecraft didn't execute the orbit insertion burn needed to reach the space station. The second major problem was a valve-mapping error with the software that controls Starliner's thrusters, which could have led to an in-space collision.

NASA and Boeing announced this week that they have now also wrapped up a separate investigation into a third major anomaly, which led to a temporary drop in communications between Starliner and ground control crews during the mission's launch. That brief glitch left mission control unable to manually command Starliner to do the orbit insertion burn after the onboard timer issue prevented it from happening automatically.

"As we started to look at the data from the flight and why we didn't get a good forward communication link with a spacecraft, what we found was that the system perhaps allowed a little bit too big of a band of frequencies to come in to the transceiver itself," Stitch said.

"What Boeing has done to fix that and mitigate that problem is actually installing a filter, which essentially only allows the receiver to listen to a very narrow band of frequencies with the Tracking and Data Relay Satellite," he added. (NASA's Tracking and Data Relay Satellites, or TDRS, allow ground controllers to communicate with spacecraft.)

Video: Boeing gives Starliner capsule parachutes a workout in drop test

While investigating the first two anomalies earlier this year, the joint NASA-Boeing review team came up with the initial list of 61 corrective actions to implement before Starliner can fly again. But with the recent completion of the investigation into the communications problem, as well as what NASA calls a "high-visibility close call" investigation, that list has now grown to 80 recommendations, Kathy Lueders, NASA's chief of human spaceflight, said in the teleconference.

NASA and Boeing have not made the complete list of recommendations public due to concerns over releasing "proprietary data," Leuders said. But NASA did provide a list of categories and numbers of recommendations in a statement.

Thirty-five of the recommendations pertained to process and operational improvements, 21 of them deal with testing and simulations, 17 are related to software updates and requirements and seven are in a category that includes hardware modifications and other organizational changes.

The high-visibility close call investigation was meant "to specifically review the organizational factors within NASA and Boeing that could have contributed to the flight test anomalies," NASA officials said in the statement. "The close call investigation team, established in March, was tasked with developing recommendations that could be used to prevent similar close calls from occurring in the future."

"NASA and Boeing have completed a tremendous amount of work reviewing the issues experienced during the uncrewed flight test of Starliner," Steve Jurczyk, NASA's associate administrator, said in the statement. "Ultimately, everything we've found will help us improve as we move forward in the development and testing of Starliner, and in our future work with commercial industry as a whole."

Isolation Insights From Sheyna Gifford, Who Spent A Year In A Mars Simulation For NASA – WBEZ

Sheyna Gifford spent a year living on a volcano in Hawaii with just five other people as part of HI-SEAS IV, a NASA project to simulate life on Mars.

Living in a biodome the size of a two-bedroom apartment and going outside only in their space suits, the crew studied the psychological effects and group dynamics that could be at play when astronauts eventually make it to Mars.

But this interview about relationships, food and free time while in isolation also has a few interesting parallels to our collective situation during the 2020 coronavirus pandemic.

It just teaches you to appreciate everything you have on this planet, Gifford told Nerdette a few months after the mission ended in 2017.

Lights that turn on when you want them to. Water that can run when you want it to. The ability to call your friends and family and hear their voices in real time, Gifford said. All of those things that you just think of as something that you can do at the drop of the hat become impossible on Mars, and therefore become very precious. So its good for you as a person. It gives you a sense of perspective and gratitude.

In this episode of Nerdette, Gifford tells co-host emeritus Tricia Bobeda what living in a box on top of a volcano for a year was like. Plus, she explains why you should think carefully about who and what you want on your spaceship.

This episode originally aired in February 2017. That full interview can be found here.

NASA Will ‘Pause’ Attempts to Deploy InSight’s Heat Probe on Mars – ExtremeTech

This site may earn affiliate commissions from the links on this page. Terms of use.

The InSight lander has been trying to deploy its heat probe instrument for months, but its going to take a break. This probe was supposed to dig down to take the planets temperature, but NASA has only made progress when nudging the probe along with the landers robotic arm. The latest data suggests the probe isnt moving anymore, so NASA has decided to pause this part of the mission and use the arm for other important work.

InSight landed on Mars in late 2018, and NASA set to work mapping out the area around it. After building a model of the landers surroundings, NASA chose the best spot to deploy the Seismic Experiment for Interior Structure (SEIS) instrument. The lander had SEIS up and running a few months later, allowing NASA to turn its attention to the Heat Flow and Physical Properties Package (HP3). This instrument, sometimes called the mole, is essentially a self-hammering nail that was supposed to reach a depth of about five meters (16 feet) all on its own. Alas, it proved much more challenging than SEIS.

The InSight team found the HP3 could only dig down several inches before it stalled and eventually popped back out. NASA has speculated that the Martian soil is so fine that it continuously falls back into the hole each time the probe tries to hammer itself down deeper. In March, NASA decided to push the probe with the robotic arm to keep it from backtracking, and that appeared to work at first. However, the probe is now completely underground, and it seems to have stalled without the arm to keep pushing.

View post on imgur.com

Video of the lander from June 20th (above) shows soil vibrating and jumping on the arms scoop. NASA believes this is due to the HP3 tapping the bottom of the arm as it bounces back with each failed attempt to move deeper. The team has decided the arm will back away, allowing the lander to get images of the moles current state. This could help NASA properly diagnose the problem and find a solution. More likely, it will just have to change the design of similar instruments in the future to account for Mars unusual soil properties.

InSights robotic arm has other jobs to do. NASA wants to use the arm to get a selfie of the lander, but not just for fun. The team needs to see how much dust has accumulated on the stationary robots solar panels. The arm cameras will also do a little astronomy on Mars, scanning the sky for meteors entering the Martian atmosphere. The team knows the moles situation isnt likely to improve during the pause, but there are still a few things to try. In particular, the team is working on a plan to dump loose material into the hole in hopes of providing the needed friction.

NASA’s newest Mars rover Perseverance: Everything you need to know – CNET

The Perseverance rover on Mars as imagined by an artist.

NASA's Perseverance rover hopes to answer our biggest burning question about Mars history: Did the red planet once host life?

The dry, dusty Mars we know today was very different in the deep past. Humanity's latest rover is making a beeline for an area of Mars that was once home to a lake, a perfect place to look for signs of ancient microbes.

Since Sojourner in 1997, NASA has sent a succession of increasingly sophisticated wheeled explorers to Mars. Perseverance is the latest and greatest and in July 2020, it launches on an epic journey across space.

From the cosmos to your inbox. Get the latest space stories from CNET every week.

Perseverance will do much more than snap amazing images of Mars. These are some of the key mission objectives:

The mission is planned to last for at least one Mars year, which works out to about 687 days on Earth (it takes longer for Mars to go around the sun). However, NASA has a good track record with extending its robotic Mars missions. We can look to the long-lived Opportunity and Curiosity rovers as role models for this.

Now playing: Watch this: Meet the Mars 2020 rover launching this year

4:47

After a series of delays, Perseverance is now targeted to launch no earlier than July 30. NASA has nudged the event back several times from the original July 17 date. The delays are not yet an issue since the open period for launch stretches until Aug. 15. NASA will livestream the rover's sendoff.

When: July 30Where: Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, FloridaRocket: United Launch Alliance (ULA) Atlas V

The window is important. "Owing to the relative positions of Earth and Mars to each other, launch opportunities come up only every 26 months," said NASA in a June 2020 release. Missing this window would mean NASA would have to wait until September 2022 for its next shot. The space agency will do everything possible to make sure Perseverance takes off on time.

NASA performed extensive tests of the parachute system that will lower Perseverance to Mars.

As long as the rover launches sometime within the designated time period, it will have the same arrival date: Feb. 18, 2021. The landing process will include some of the most harrowing minutes of the entire mission.

Perseverance will get to try out a new method that NASA hopes will deliver it as close to its targeted landing site as possible. NASA calls this the "Range Trigger" technique and it's all about deploying the parachutes at exactly the right time.

"If the spacecraft were going to overshoot the landing target, the parachute would be deployed earlier," said NASA. "If it were going to fall short of the target, the parachute would be deployed later, after the spacecraft flew a little closer to its target."

Earth observers can look forward to an unprecedented view of the entry, descent and landing process. The mission is equipped with cameras and a microphone to capture all of the excitement and stress as NASA attempts to land Perseverance gently onto the surface of Mars.

This Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter image shows the Jezero Crater delta region.

Jezero Crater is located just north of Mars' equator and was once home to a river delta. That history of water makes it a prime spot to look for signs of past microbial life. Sounds like the perfect landing site for a science laboratory on wheels.

"The landing site in Jezero Crater offers geologically rich terrain, with landforms reaching as far back as 3.6 billion-years-old, that could potentially answer important questions in planetary evolution and astrobiology,"said NASA's Thomas Zurbuchenwhen the site was announced in 2018.

The car-sized Perseverance rover looks fairly similar to its predecessor, Curiosity, but also represents quite a few technology advances since Curiosity was designed. Here are the numbers:

Length: 10 feet (3 meters)Weight: 2,260 pounds (1,025 kilograms)Wheels: Six aluminum wheels with titanium spokesTop speed: Just under 0.1-miles per hour (152 meters per hour)

The Perseverance rover is stocked with instruments that it will use to investigate the Jezero Crater on Mars.

Perseverance is loaded with seven instruments chosen to help it achieve its mission objectives. You can get the full rundown from NASA, but here are some highlights:

Mastcam-Z: The camera system mounted on the rover's mast is equivalent to eyes on a head. According to NASA, its main job is "to take high-definition video, panoramic color and 3D images of the Martian surface and features in the atmosphere with a zoom lens to magnify distant targets." The mastcam will be our main viewing window onto the Jezero Crater.

MOXIE: The Mars Oxygen In-Situ Resource Utilization Experiment is one of the ways Perseverance is helping to prepare humans to go to Mars. This instrument is designed to make oxygen from the carbon-dioxide atmosphere. This capability will be necessary to help future human explorers breathe, but it would also help us make propellant for rockets right on site. That's a necessary step for bringing our Mars astronauts back to Earth after their missions.

SuperCam: When you put a camera, laser and spectrometers together, you get SuperCam, an instrument that will help look for organic compounds, a key part of the quest for signs of past microbial life. "It can identify the chemical and mineral makeup of targets as small as a pencil point from a distance of more than 20 feet (7 meters)," said NASA.

Sherloc: The "Scanning Habitable Environments with Raman & Luminescence for Organics & Chemicals" or Sherloc, as the instrument is affectionately known, will search for signs of life on the red planet. The instrument and its companion camera (nicknamed Watson) are capable of taking microscopic images of Mars and analyzing them. Equipped with a laser it can fire at the surface, Sherloc is able to measure chemicals present in the soil and rock using a technique known as spectroscopy.

The NASA Mars helicopter team attaches a piece to the flight model in early 2019.

"Let's send a helicopter to Mars" might sound a little far-fetched, but NASA is doing it anyway. Ingenuity, a small helicopter designed to work in the challenging conditions on the red planet, is all tucked into the rover's belly where it will ride out the journey.

Ingenuity is a high-risk, high-reward technology demonstration. It will hang out under the rover for a few months until NASA finds a suitable spot to deploy it. Perseverance will drop it onto the Martian surface and then move away.

The helicopter will make the first attempt at powered flight on another planet. NASA hopes Ingenuity soars and becomes a model for a new way to investigate other worlds.

Check out this video for more on how this little chopper could change the way we approach space exploration.

NASA currently has two machines operating on the surface of Mars, the stationary InSight lander and the Mars rover Curiosity. InSight is located in a region called Elysium Planitia, a large plains area. Curiosity is cruising around Gale Crater, a giant ditch with a massive mountain inside it. Perseverance will be scoping out a very different part of the planet as it continues NASA's legacy of Mars exploration.

The last time we had two functioning rovers on Mars was in 2018 when the Opportunity rover lost contact with home due to the impact of a global dust storm. Perseverance won't have the same issues as Opportunity. Like Curiosity, it uses a nuclear power source that doesn't require sunlight to keep it going.

This plate holds the names of nearly 11 million people and carries a coded message.

Perseverance will be a long way from Earth, but it will carry poignant remembrances of its home planet. Over 10.9 million people signed up to have their names travel with the rover through NASA's Send Your Name to Mars public outreach program. The names are etched on small silicon chips that NASA installed on the rover on an aluminum plate underneath a protective shield.

The plate also bears an illustration of the Earth, our sun and Mars. Hidden in the sun's rays is the message "explore as one," written in Morse code.

A separate aluminum plate pays tribute to health care workers and their efforts to aid humanity during the coronavirus pandemic. This plate carries an illustration of a serpent wrapped around a rod with the Earth at the top.

These names and messages are a reminder that NASA's robotic explorers never truly travel alone. Perseverance is the culmination of years of effort from NASA, but it's also an emissary for humanity, an extension of our curiosity and sense of wonder and a little bit of Earth on Mars.

Top 8 Things You Should Know As A Creditor In Bankruptcy – Forbes

Many companies, both large and small are filing for bankruptcy.

Hertz, Neiman Marcus, Golds Gym, Apex Linen and Piquero Leasing. What do all of these companies have in common? They have all filed for bankruptcy under Chapter 11.While the first three are grabbing all of the headlines, there is a greater likelihood that your company has done business with one of the 500 smaller companies that have filed for reorganization. Most likely, these companies have filed because revenues are down and expenses have stayed the same.If your company was doing business with a company that is now in bankruptcy, you are a creditor. Here are the top 8 things you should know.

1.The Automatic Stay. Small companies are facing more pressure than ever to pay their bills. As soon as a company files for bankruptcy, there is an automatic stay of any collection efforts against it (whether it is a demand letter, a lawsuit or anything else). The purpose of the automatic stay is to give the company breathing space to figure out what it is going to do.You dont have to do anything proactively, such as dismissing an existing lawsuit, you just cant continue trying to collect, unless you ask the court for relief to continue with your collection efforts. However, unless you are a secured creditor, you will most likely not be granted relief.

2.First Day Motions. As soon as a company starts the bankruptcy case, it files motions known as first day motions. These are motions that will let the company continue to operate, by paying wages owed to employees just before the filing, permitting the company to utilize cash to pay its post filing bills and so forth.Even though you will get formal notice of the filing, that will not happen for a few weeks.By then, the first day motions have already been ruled on.If you hear a rumor that a company you deal with has filed, contact your lawyer immediately.Your attorney will be able to go onto the federal court dockets to see whether the case was filed. Why is this important? There are a number of reasons. For example, if you are what is known as a critical vendor, you may be able to get paid what you were owed when the case was filed. The standard to be a critical vendor is high, but if the company files that kind of a motion, you should try and have your business included.

3.Cash Collateral. If a company borrows money before bankruptcy, the lender will insist on some type of security. This security normally will include, among other things, liens on real estate and accounts receivable.Once the company files for bankruptcy, it can only use cash either with permission of the lender or with the approval of the court. One of the first day motions will be a request to use cash collateral. The motion will include a budget. You should have your lawyer ask the debtors attorney for a copy of the budget, to see if the debtor intends to pay you going forward.

4.File a Request for Notices. It is difficult for a non-lawyer to monitor a bankruptcy case.If your lawyer files a request for notices, they will receive everything filed in the case via email.

5.Schedules.Early on in the case, a debtor must file what are called the Schedules. The Schedules are a listing of what a debtor owns and what it believes it owes.It is very important for your attorney to review the Schedules to make sure (1) your claim is included and (2) it is for the right amount. If the amount your company is owed is either not included or included for the wrong amount and you do nothing, what the debtor says in the Schedules will form the basis for the amount you will receive. If your debt is listed as disputed, unless you file a proof of claim, you may get nothing.

6.Proof of Claim. In order for you to tell the debtor how much you believe you are owed, you will need to file a proof of claim. This is not something that has to be done immediately and you will receive formal notice of the deadline of when to file, as well as how it is filed.

7.Reclamation. If this applies to you it is important because there is a narrow window for you to act. Reclamation refers to the right of a seller to reclaim goods sold to a debtor while the debtor was insolvent. The Bankruptcy Code sets out the specific process and timing that has to be followed in order to be able to reclaim your goods. If your company is in this position, it is important that you notify your attorney immediately of the bankruptcy.

8.Executory Contracts and Unexpired Leases of Nonresidential Real Property. One of the things the debtor gets to do is to decide is which of its contracts it wants to keep and which ones it wants to get rid of.Keeping a contract is called assumption and getting rid of one is called rejection. The debtor has until the end of the case to make this decision. If the debtor is going to assume a contract it has to pay all of the money that was owed when the case filed or show how it will pay those amounts. If your company is a party to a contract, it has to continue to perform and the debtor has to pay for the work during the bankruptcy. If the debtor doesnt pay, you can ask the Court to have the debtor decide what it is going to do before the end of the case.Landlords fare better. The debtor has to decide within 120 days if it going to assume or reject the lease (this deadline can be extended for 90 days). If the debtor does nothing by the deadline, the lease is deemed to be rejected.

As you can see, there are things you need to know if you are a creditor. While you probably dont want to spend more money chasing your debt, you should consider having your lawyer do those things to protect your company and the money it is owed.

Moratorium on initiation of bankruptcy proceedings to be introduced in Kazakhstan – JD Supra

On 11 May 2020, the President of Kazakhstan Kasym-Zhomart Tokayev ordered the suspension of the initiation of bankruptcy proceedings against legal entities and individual entrepreneurs until 1 October 2020 to prevent pressure from creditors acting in bad faith.

In accordance with this order, the Ministry of Finance of the Republic of Kazakhstan developed a draft Resolution of the Government of the Republic of Kazakhstan "On Suspending the Initiation of Bankruptcy Proceedings" (the "Resolution").

It should be noted that currently Kazakhstan laws do not establish any clear criteria to be used by the court to determine a creditor acting in bad faith at the time when the creditor applies to the court to declare the debtor bankrupt. Apparently, this is why the publicly available draft Resolution does not itself refer to "creditors acting in bad faith".

According to the draft Resolution, the state revenue authorities and quasi-public entities shall not file with the court applications to declare legal entities and individual entrepreneurs bankrupt during the period from 11 May 2020 until 1 October 2020.

Thus, should the Resolution be adopted, it will impose a temporary moratorium on initiation of bankruptcy proceedings by state revenue authorities and quasi-public entities.

The notion of "quasi-public entities" includes:

Adoption of the Resolution in its current version will not result in a ban on initiating bankruptcy proceedings at the request of the debtors themselves and (or) other creditors (including international financial organisations and second-tier banks).

We understand that as of the date of this publication the Resolution has not been adopted yet.

We are closely monitoring the situation and will keep you updated on any developments.

Weinstein Co. Aims to Wrap Up Bankruptcy Case in December, Amid Objections – Variety

An attorney for the Weinstein Co. told a judge on Thursday that he hopes to wrap up the bankruptcy case in December, pending approval of a $46.8 million settlement.

The settlement, announced on June 30, resolves most of the civil litigation surrounding Harvey Weinsteins sexual misconduct. Under the agreement, $18.9 million would go to claimants in a class action case and their attorneys, and another pool of $5.4 million would be set aside for plaintiffs who filed individual lawsuits. The funds will be paid out of insurance policies.

The deal still must receive approval from Judge Alvin Hellerstein, who is overseeing the class action case, and Judge Mary Walrath, who is handling the Weinstein Co. bankruptcy.

Attorneys Douglas Wigdor and Kevin Mintzer, who represent plaintiffs who have refused to settle, have said that the deal is a complete sellout of Weinsteins survivors, and have said they will vigorously object in court.

Paul Zumbro, an attorney for the Weinstein Co. bankruptcy estate, gave Walrath an update on the settlement in a telephonic hearing on Thursday morning. He conceded that the deal was by no means perfect, but said it represented the best compromise that could be achieved. He also laid out the next steps in the class action suit and in the bankruptcy case, and said he aimed to get confirmation of the Weinstein Co. liquidation plan in December.

The Weinstein Co. declared bankruptcy in March 2018, following revelations of decades of Weinsteins sexual assault and harassment. Lantern Capital, a Dallas private equity firm, bought the companys assets for $289 million, and subsequently rebranded the firm as Spyglass Media.

The sale proceeds went to the companys secured lenders, leaving only the insurance policies to pay out Weinsteins victims. Under the settlement agreement, $7.3 million will go to the companys unsecured trade creditors.

Another $12.2 million goes to attorneys who defended Harvey Weinstein and the directors and officers of the Weinstein Co.

Wigdor and Mintzer have objected that Weinstein is paying nothing into the settlement, and that the insurance companies will be absolved from covering the claims of the holdout plaintiffs. They also contend that the class action attorneys will be seeking millions in fees for an objectively unsuccessful result.

Weinstein is serving a 23-year sentence for rape and sexual assault at Wende Correctional Facility near Buffalo, N.Y.

LaShyra Nolen is pushing for change within Harvard Medical School. Heres what she wants you to know. – Boston.com

In the week after George Floyd was killed in Minneapolis, LaShyra Nolen was asked by her professors each day how she was doing.

To share how she was feeling, the first-year student at Harvard Medical School shared a poem on Twitter, explaining that she could no longer pretend to be okay. In her verses, she drew attention to the disproportionate impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on communities of color, systemic racism, and police brutality.

The truth is Black students are NOT okay, she wrote.

Nolen, who is the first Black woman to serve as student council president at the institution, is no stranger to advocating for social and racial justice. The Harvard student told Boston.com she believes it is her responsibility to make sure she uses her growing platform in the medical field to fight for health equity and to help tell the stories of communities whose voices are not being heard.

In June, Nolen announced she and her classmates had launched a petition to rename the Holmes Society at Harvard Medical School, named after Oliver Wendell Holmes Sr., citing his promotion of eugenics and violence toward Black and Indigenous peoples.

The same month, the medical student had an essay published in the New England Journal of Medicine that laid out the need for increased representation of Black people and minority populations in medical training, providing examples from her own training.

In one, she noted that her CPR training used mannequins with white male bodies. In another instance, she recalled that during a discussion about Lyme disease in a microbiology class the professor showed photos from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention of the red bulls-eye rash on white skin, only noting that it is more difficult to see the rash on melanated skin in response to a students question.

If medical students and trainees are taught to recognize symptoms of disease in only white patients and learn to perform lifesaving maneuvers on only male-bodied mannequins, medical educators may be unwittingly contributing to health disparities instead of mitigating them, Nolen wrote.

The California native said she knew since she was in third grade that she wanted to be a doctor, but her dedication and interest in addressing inequities stems from when she moved from Compton to the suburb of Rancho Cucamonga at the age of 10.

It was a completely different life, she said.

The roads were different, the access to basic needs everything was just so plentiful, and that was so different from my experience in Compton and in L.A. she said. That was when I really started to think about differences and race.

She continued to question the disparities she saw between the suburb where she lived, which was predominantly white, and her old neighborhood, which was predominantly Black and Latinx. Those questions took on another layer of urgency when she was 15 and a family member passed away from what she called a preventable death, from complications of obesity and diabetes.

It wasnt until she got to college and learned about the social determinants of health that she began to be able to articulate what shed grown up witnessing, she said.

I started to get a lexicon for all these different things that Id experienced in my childhood, Nolen said. Why we have these differences, how those differences then go on to impact your health, how that impacted my family. All of those things came together, and that is what really inspires my passion because Ive seen it personally. I still continue to see it.

Below, Nolen speaks more about the importance of activism in health care and the changes she hopes to see occur in medical institutions to address systemic racism.

The interview has been lightly edited for clarity and length.

Boston.com: The country is now in a moment of addressing two public health crises COVID-19 and racism. How does it feel to be a medical student right now, and what concerns do you have as efforts to address these two crises move forward?

LaShyra Nolen: Its such an interesting time to be a medical student, and I think its an especially interesting time to be a medical student at Harvard. Because here I am getting this amazing education Im learning about ace-inhibitors, Im learning about the pathophysiology of COVID-19. But even if I get the best education, even if I become the best surgeon, theres still a huge possibility that my patient could walk outside of the clinic and be stopped by a police officer. And if they move too quickly, they might end up losing their life. Or, its very possible that my patient will go back to a community where they dont have access to the basic needs that they need to live out a healthy life.

I think those are the conversations that were starting to finally have. Because it doesnt matter how good medicine gets at finding cures and doing research and pushing the envelope in the biomedical realm, [if] theres still going to be systemic inequity in our society.

If we dont address that, then were never really going to be able to help our patients have the best outcomes that they deserve. As a medical student, Im learning all this science, which is so key for treating your patients. But theres also work that needs to be done outside the clinic it cant stop there.

What were you hoping people would take away from the poem you shared on Twitter, and what was the response that you received after you shared it?

That poem came from a place of all of this turmoil around us being laid to bare. In one context, we have this global pandemic, COVID-19, ravaging through Black communities, Latinx communities, indigenous communities. Then concurrently we have this other pandemic that weve always known to exist systemic racism.

Were seeing so many Black peoples lives being taken on screens, being shown across the country, across the globe. And I was expected to come to class, and I was expected to pretend that everyone was OK. I was expected to just learn the pathophysiology, recite the things that I had studied the night before. That isnt just an experience of medical students its the experience of all Black professionals and all Black students. We have to separate our Blackness from our experience as students and professionals so often. And that was me just saying, Im not OK, and instead of you asking if Im OK, I want you to educate yourself and learn about why Im not OK and make sure that you arent complicit in the system that is contributing to the reason why Im not OK.

Thats really where that came from, and the response that I got from it was really positive. What always surprises me when I speak out is how much feedback Ill get from people who are higher up in the medical hierarchy. Residents and folks who are professors, and they say, Thank you for saying that. Because they dont have the space to say that and be vulnerable and feel comfortable and feel like their jobs arent going to be jeopardy if they say, Hey, Im not doing OK, and, You guys really need to address these issues that were experiencing. It just goes to show how the hierarchy of academic medicine can be harmful.

What do you see as the responsibility you and medical professionals have when it comes to activism? What role do you think doctors or health care professionals should be taking on when it comes to advocacy and social justice, and why do you think its important they are involved?

I think its extremely important. Number one, because I think physicians and health care providers should care about all things that affect their patients health. There have been numerous studies that have come out and shown that access to housing, access to education, access to basic human needs are what folks need to have the best health outcomes. All of that is so inextricably connected to sociology and history and psychology.

We cant continue to just stay in the realm of medicine, because our world gets the benefits from medicine. Almost 20 percent of our GDP comes from health care spending and costs. So we cant just pretend that medicine isnt a political issue, or that its completely separate. Its extremely important for us to not just stay in this lane of medicine because thats just the beginning. When we give the patient the medicine, we have to make sure that theyre able to afford it, we have to make sure that the pill bottle is in the correct language for them to understand, we have to make sure that theyre able to have transportation to get to the clinic. Its so important that we engage in activism because its going to be a huge part of maintaining our patients health and thats essentially what were supposed to be doing as healers.

Given the petition to rename the Holmes Society and your piece in the NEJM, can you speak more to the importance of health professionals addressing institutionalized racism within the institution of medicine and how that can be done?

These are the perfect examples of two buckets that I view advocacy and activism in. One bucket is the inward facing activism. The Holmes Society changing its name is an example of that, because here we have this society where students go to learn, students go to build relationships and form some of their fondest memories of medical school. But the namesake of this institution is someone who was a eugenist, someone who was known to be racist and was actively violent with their words towards indigenous and Black communities. When we have an individual like that representing this space thats supposed to be so wholesome and a safe haven, that can be really dangerous. That work needs to be done so that students of color Black students, indigenous students, Lantinx students can thrive and feel comfortable in these spaces. We cant continue to just recruit students of color and then not protect them when they get to these institutions. Protection goes beyond just evaluations and making sure that they feel like they can thrive academically and arent experiencing micro-aggressions. Its, Who are the people on our walls? How are we allowing violence to be perpetuated silently by who we allow to take up space in these institutions? That is why changing the name of Holmes is so important.

The New England Journal of Medicine piece came out of this idea of more outward facing activism. Even though its a change that needs to happen within the medical institution, if were graduating physicians who dont even know how to recognize key symptoms in patients of color or if we dont graduate physicians who understand the nuance of doing CPR on a person with breasts the fact that you have to take off that persons shirt and how uncomfortable that might be for that individual and talking about issues of consent its just so much more nuanced to the different things were learning. But we just ignore it. They call it the reference man we always use men as the reference, particularly white men. Thats so problematic because that can go on to perpetuate health disparities in the communities that we seek to serve.

If were going to be institutions that are mission-driven and we want to increase diversity within our medical school and we want to help mitigate health disparities, we have to look at the small insidious ways that we might be actually doing more harm than good. The worst part is that often Black students, the marginalized student, is often the person that has to put themselves out there to ask that question. And I think that in itself is a really big issue because why is that my non-Black peers didnt raise their hands and say, Hey, how would I recognize this in a patient with darker skin? Because those are going to be their patients, too. Thats the direction we have to move in this antiracist movement it shouldnt be that its always the responsibility of the marginalized person to stand up for the marginalized group. It should be a collective effort that we all value the humanity of all patients. And I really hope thats the direction that we go in.

In a speech last August, you addressed young Black girls, saying You cant be what you cant see when it comes to diversity in medicine. Can you speak to more of what you meant when you said that medicine will not progress without the diversity of having young Black women going into the field, and what changes do you want to see taken to ensure theres greater diversity?

I think it will play a very important role in the future. I personally did not see a Black doctor until the summer of my freshman year of college. I had gone through my entire life with this dream of becoming a doctor, and the reason why that dream was kept alive is because I had a grandmother and a mother who believed in me endlessly, even though they had never necessarily seen a Black doctor before. They just believed in me and they just breathed life into my dreams, but it wasnt until I saw that Black doctor that it all clicked, and I said, OK, it seems like its possible to actually achieve this dream. We have to start exposing youth to the sciences early on, and beyond just exposing youth to the sciences, we also have to mitigate the different forms of structural racism that are embedded in society. We have to think about, How is that when I build a new building for my medical school, that Im then taking tax revenue away from the city? And then, How is that going to affect how schools are able to invest in educational programs? We have to think about how we as institutions are complicit in systemic racism beyond just having these pipeline programs. We have to have a two-fold approach to addressing this issue of representation, but then also making sure that were doing the work to mitigate systemic racism.

Is there anything else you want to say or want people to know?

Antiracism has to be an every day, every moment work. It cant be something that only lasts this summer, it cant be something that only lasts in 2020. It has to be something that people are actively engaging in every moment of their life, because racism is so deeply embedded into the fabric of America and into the fabric of our everyday lives that we dont even realize it. Therere many different ways people can mitigate this, but its going to happen through uncomfortable conversations, speaking out against the ways that systemic racism has silently been able to fester in our academic environments, among other things. This work is uncomfortable and its ongoing, and we should never stop.

What Challenges Affect the Cost of Running a Cryptocurrency Exchange – Cointelegraph

Running a cryptocurrency exchange comes with a lot of considerations. What are the regulations in the country you operate in? Do you have sufficient liquidity? How will you handle security? Adhering to all of these requirements leads to excessive costs involved with setting up and operating these platforms, which means that a high price is often required to get a coin listed on them. This only makes it that much harder for new assets to find a market.

Depending on where you are in the world, the regulations concerning cryptocurrency can be anywhere from strict to completely absent, with changes often coming swiftly after long periods of silence. While local rules can vary greatly, many governments have been moving toward stronger Anti-Money Laundering laws, such as the European Unions 5th Anti-Money Laundering Directive, which is currently forcing some firms in the EU to rethink their location.

In the United States, Representative Paul Gosar, a Republican from Arizona, introduced the Crypto-Currency Act of 2020, which would see unique definitions and oversight of crypto commodities, cryptocurrencies and crypto securities. Moreover, South Korea just passed a law requiring cryptocurrency exchanges to partner with banks to enforce AML policies. Meanwhile, the Reserve Bank of India recently lifted a ban on cryptocurrency that had only been enacted in April of 2018.

The point here is that regulations are subject to change based on geopolitical location and can also quickly evolve within just one jurisdiction. This can be costly to mitigate for exchanges. Paying for professional help just to understand the latest laws can add up, as can employing the teams necessary to collect and verify AML documentation from customers. However, failing to do so could lead to expensive fines or even to the platform being shut down. Unfortunately, these regulations are rarely seen as optional once they are decided upon.

Regulations arent the only obstacles for new exchanges. Issues can arise just in the act of setting up an exchange. There are myriad facets to think about, and all of them can be complex and expensive. Designing an interface, programming the matching engine, integrating AML practices, and working with local banks are just a handful of the concerns a team setting up a new exchange would need to address. All of these would also need a fair amount of time just to be implemented. Then, there is interacting with multiple blockchains in real time, security systems, and the sheer cost of storing and maintaining servers. The amount of time needed just to find quality programmers, build the codebase and debug it can easily take a year or longer if a team is starting from scratch.

Even once that has all been navigated, and the exchange is live, there will still be ongoing and expensive issues to contend with. Take liquidity, for example, which can be a major problem for smaller exchanges as well as smaller markets. This refers to the small number of buyers and sellers available to give traders confidence that they can make the trades they want when they want. Without this, traders will often miss out on opportunities because they cannot enter or exit a position in time, which will be frustrating and hurt business.

In other words, exchanges want to bring in as much traffic as possible and to curate a user experience that pleases everyone. Here, things like security and customer service are front and center. Clients want to know that the exchange is safe from both outside hackers and inside operators and that funds are always available where the exchange says they will be. Inevitably, there will be some mistakes or technical issues. This is why it is important to have support teams to address upset customers, as well as others to fix issues with the platform. Having the capability to respond to all of these matters doesnt come cheap, but without this, a new platform will surely fail.

In addition to the aforementioned issues, it can take a significant amount of capital to open and operate a cryptocurrency exchange. This can lead to platforms having large fees attached to listing fresh assets, which harms new development teams. It also causes much of the market to be channeled through a handful of gatekeepers, namely, the biggest exchanges that have already established themselves.

This is clearly problematic for smaller projects that arent already available across multiple exchanges. If they cannot raise the capital needed to be listed on larger platforms, which can often be in the $100,000 range or higher, then nobody would be able to buy them. Of course, in that case, they wont grow, and potentially sound ideas may get wiped out due to lack of liquidity and exposure. Projects need a way to know that they can create their own market when necessary, but for the most part, the costs may be too steep to launch an exchange platform.

This is where white-label exchanges enter the picture. A white-label exchange uses specially designed software to launch a new platform fast and cheap. A team, for example, could get an exchange running in days instead of months, and for thousands of dollars as opposed to millions. These exchanges generally follow templates but are highly customizable and can negate the need for a company to develop its own proprietary software. Generally, the software should provide everything necessary to get up and running, as well as to be in compliance, though not all exchanges are identical. It is important to know about a few specific options that are available.

In general, exchanges can be centralized or decentralized, and cloud-based or do-it-yourself. A centralized exchange means you will be hosted on another companys servers, which are generally paired with cloud-based models. It could also be hosted on your own servers, but this will also be cost-prohibitive for most. While you wont have as much control, usually the company offering this will handle a great deal of the operations behind the scenes, as well as manage technical issues. Although they offset some costs, subscription fees help to keep the platform running, but the upfront costs of getting started should be relatively cheaper.

DIY exchanges can be either centralized or decentralized, but when it is decentralized, it runs across many servers, and not simply by a single third-party entity. The DIY part means that while the software may be set up to assist you, there will generally not be anyone else operating the exchange behind the scenes. These packages may also come with subscriptions that allow you to access a team of experts for support, but you will be making the final decisions. Such offerings may be less expensive on a monthly basis but can often still have larger, one-time fees associated with being allowed to run the software.

One solution that solves many of the issues faced by teams looking to create new exchanges is the HollaEx Kit, offered by bitHolla. The kit is open-source, free to install and offers the most comprehensive set of tools for anyone to create a new cryptocurrency exchange in minutes. It includes a desktop and mobile user interface, a trade matching engine, and an administrative control panel. You can add any trading pairs you choose, including your own newly created coins or tokens. It is also designed to keep you in compliance with most modern regulations by offering a system that collects relevant AML data from your customers.

The process of setting up a new platform is streamlined, and there are options for getting advanced help from bitHollas team of experts. This makes HollaEx Kit the most attractive option for development teams who need to create new markets for their coins but cant afford to pay the exorbitant fees that come with most exchanges. The bitHolla team has created a product that seeks to be the WordPress of building exchanges. In time, DIY software will likely become the gold standard and will be increasingly integrated into more websites, potentially weakening the draw of centralized services. This is what bitHollas HollaEx Kit is trying to achieve with this software package, which will hopefully make access to building the cryptocurrency market a bit easier for everyone.

Huobi Global Provides Insight on What Is Driving the Institutional Interest in Cryptocurrency Investment – PRNewswire

LONDON, July 10, 2020 /PRNewswire/ -- Huobi, has seen aninflux of traditional and institutional traders join their platform and take advantage of the Huobi Futures market place. As of May 6, Futures and Swap Trading Volume at Huobi topped $5.2 billion, with 24 hour perpetual swap trading volume hitting $2.2 billion this is off a product that was only launched in April.

What is most interesting to see is that the Institution trading percentage on Huobi futures is estimated to as high as 30 to 40 percent.

This year has been a defining one for a number of reasons. The world has faced a global pandemic, and the traditional markets and economies around the planet have had to try and deal with this unprecedented event. It has also been a year that looks set for greater interest in cryptocurrency investment.

Internally, the cryptocurrency space has been on the rise in the mainstream as regulations, governments, and traditional institutions have come to normalize and legitimize much of the space. But now, externally, there is financial uncertainty in the traditional space and many retail and institutional investors are casting their eyes to new avenues.

Peoplehave seen Paul Tudor Jonespraise Bitcoinfor its potential as a speculative asset, stating he invests a small percentage of his portfolio in the coin, but expects it to be the best performer. People have also seen Grayscale Bitcoin Trustbuying up a major portion of coins newly mined after the Bitcoin halving.

But, what is it that is drawing institutional interest into the cryptocurrency market other than the current internal and external factors surrounding it. Huobi spoke with Ciara Sun, VP of Huobi Global Markets, to find out more.

What makes the market grow?

"The price volatility and high liquidity of digital assets are especially attractive to investors," explained Ciara Sun. "The crypto market is unique in that it can fulfil both demands in liquidity and volatility.

"For example, traditional investments like real estate have price volatilities but lack of liquidity. Foreign exchange markets have high liquidity but lack price volatility. Investors see arbitrage opportunities in crypto as an emerging market. An above averagerange annual return can be seen as good performance in the traditional market, but is actually a quite mediocre return in the crypto derivative market."

Clearly, the crypto market is an exciting place to be for investors. It is renowned for its high volatility, but this is a double-edged sword. For people who know how to trade well, and be safe, volatility is indicative of opportunity.

But, there is also the opportunity to use crypto to be safe and to avoid risky situations.

"Additionally, digital assets can offer investors a way to hedge risk against government intervention. Traditional assets are directly influenced by monetary policies and economic measures like quantitative easing, but digital assets are decoupled from the acts of any one nation or governing body. At a time when governments around the world are printing currency to stabilize their economies, digital assets can be one way to hedge against inflation," Ciara Sun added.

"On Huobi, we have seen a 3-4X growth in institutional trading on derivative markets since early last year. Institutional clients now account for 40% of our trading volume. Our growth in Russia is especially pleasing."

"Generally speaking, whether for institutional or individual traders, they want to choose a trading platform with good liquidity and market capitalization. Huobi manages 5% of crypto assets in the market and we are ranked the number 1 in liquidity by Coinmarketcap.

A reliable platform

Part of the growth in interest in the cryptocurrency space from institutional investors is also part of the growth of cryptocurrency providers. The expansion of CME and Bakkt is one side of it, but many institutions are coming to places like Huobi because of the professional platform provided.

Kaspersky Fraud Prevention helps Indacoin halt fraudulent operations with cryptocurrency – CRN.in

One of cryptocurrencys main benefits is the ability to conduct trusted transactions swiftly. However, the anonymous and decentralized nature of these transfers can be leveraged by fraudsters to wash money or trick legitimate crypto investors. In order to keep their customers investments truly clean, exchange service Indacoin has adopted Kaspersky Fraud Prevent to halt this foul practice.

Many fraudsters launder funds from stolen cards or using leaked card details before they transfer them to their bank accounts and it is estimated that around three-quarters of laundered cryptocurrency in 2018 was washed with an exchange service. They are also able to manipulate crypto exchange users to transfer money into another account by impersonating security service members and using tools for remote access. As this software is legitimate, traditional security solutions may not be alerted to any risks and mark it as dangers. These cases not only put users investments at risk but also negatively impacts the reputation of exchange services.

It is critical to identify and block these damaging transactions, without affecting the speed of legitimate transfers of funds. The cryptocurrency exchange rate is known to be quite erratic. which means investors rely on their payments being processed very quickly.

Indacoin, a leading fiat-to-crypto exchange, provides a simplified verification process, which allows customers to use its partners services without any additional difficulties. To eliminate risks of the platform being misused, Indacoin has turned to the Kaspersky Fraud Prevention service. The Automated Fraud Analysis uncovers fraudulent transactions in real-time. It also can detect fraudster groups through global device reputation and extended fingerprinting analysis, so it is capable of detecting suspicious activity before the act of fraud has actually damaged the business.

As a result of Kaspersky Fraud Prevention being integrated into Indacoins antifraud system, its efficiencies rose by 38%. The most noticeable improvement was the ability to identify operations when operations were conducted on a clients computer or phone via remote access.

Anvar Sidorov, Director of Partnerships at Indacoin, provided his commentary: The crypto exchange has many unique features, but in general, we share the main risks of financial institutions: security of cards and payment information, as well as security of personal accounts and safety of clients funds. The implementation of Kaspersky Fraud Prevention helped to identify highly targeted fraud schemes, identify dishonest users with advanced precision and implement machine learning in the verification system.

We are delighted to be chosen by Indacoin, and it is always great to see a business take cybersecurity seriously. Fraudulent transactions are common on crypto exchange services and this has the potential to damage investor loyalty in this new sphere. By integrating Kaspersky Fraud Prevention with their exchange, Indacoin is positioning itself as a trusted partner for cryptocurrency investors in what is a highly competitive market, comments Claire Hatcher, Head of Business for Kaspersky Fraud Prevention.

And When He Came to Himself (Luke 15:17)

The following address was given June 17, 2020, for the digital-only 2020 BYU Law School Religious Freedom Annual Review. Read a summary article of the speech.

I am grateful to participate with you in the Religious Freedom Annual Review at the J. Reuben Clark School of Law at Brigham Young University. This is a most opportune time to consider together the importance of religious freedom. And I appreciate the invitation to share a few of my thoughts with you.

In the 15th chapter of Luke in the New Testament, we learn about a young man who obtained his inheritance from his father and then traveled to a far country.[i] This young man wasted his substance with riotous living.[ii] When he had squandered all of his resources, a mighty famine arose in that land, and he began to be in want.[iii]

And he went and joined himself to a citizen of that country; and he sent him into his fields to feed swine.

And he would fain have filled his belly with the husks that the swine did eat: and no man gave unto him.

And when he came to himself, he said, How many hired servants of my fathers have bread enough and to spare, and I perish with hunger!

I will arise and go to my father, and will say unto him, Father, I have sinned against heaven, and before thee,

And am no more worthy to be called thy son: make me as one of thy hired servants.

This story has a marvelously happy ending. The return of this son to his home led to a loving reconciliation with his father and a restoration of his station in his family.

The parable of the prodigal son describes the experience of a young man who became lost and subsequently found his way back home. Please note two key aspects of this young mans experience.

First, he began to be in want when a mighty famine arose in the land. As this natural calamity unleashed its negative effects, I presume his inheritance was gone. I also imagine that many of the friends who enjoyed his companionship while he had plenty of money had long since told him goodbye. He may have been homeless. But ultimately, it was the famine and his resultant hunger that constituted a strong wake-up call. He was shaken awake from the customary patterns of his lifestyle by an increasing realization of his inability to fulfill his most basic needs.

Second, the young mans wake-up call led him to come to himself. This poignant phrase suggests to me a process of examining aspects of his life that previously had been unexamined, resulting in a piercing personal realization of his present circumstances and what he had become. He also was willing to strive for a timely and needed course correction: I will arise and go to my father.

Our world has seemingly been filled recently with strong wake-up calls. From natural disasters to a deadly pandemic sweeping the globe to a most pernicious social plague of racism, we are daily reminded that we need to awaken to the perilous times that surround us, come to ourselves, and arise and turn to our Divine Father, who desires to instruct and edify us through our trials.

Just as the famine for the prodigal son was a pivotal turning point in his life, so COVID-19 can help us to realize what we have not fully realized before. The following video highlights a number of simple wake-up calls that people have received because of COVID-19.

Several years ago, I spent a Sunday afternoon in the home of my apostolic associate, Elder Robert D. Hales, as he was recovering from a serious illness. We discussed our families, our quorum responsibilities, and important life experiences.

At one point I asked Elder Hales, You have been a successful husband, father, athlete, pilot, business executive, and Church leader. What lessons have you learned as you have grown older and been constrained by decreased physical capacity?

Elder Hales paused for a moment and responded, When you cannot do what you have always done, then you only do what matters most.

I was struck by the simplicity and comprehensiveness of his answer. My beloved friend shared with me a lesson of a lifetimea lesson learned through the crucible of physical suffering and spiritual searching.

For Elder Hales, the limitations that were the natural consequence of advancing age, in fact, had become remarkable sources of spiritual learning and insight. The very factors that may have appeared to limit his effectiveness became some of his greatest strengths. Physical restrictions expanded his vision. Limited stamina clarified his priorities. Inability to do many things directed his focus to a few things of greatest importance.

Thus, constraints and limitations can be remarkable blessings, if we have eyes to see and ears to hear. And this same truth applies to all of us today as we wrestle with the effects of a pandemic.

COVID-19 Wake-Up Calls

The following examples highlight some of the things we may now see and hear more distinctly because of the demands and constraints imposed upon us by COVID-19.

COVID-19 has alerted us to many of the limitations in the supply chain processes that bring food from the fields, farms, and processing plants to our local grocery stores and kitchen tables.

COVID-19 has alerted us to our dependence upon foreign nations for many of our essential medical supplies, pharmaceuticals, and a wide variety of other strategically important products.

COVID-19 has alerted us to many of the constraints of just-in-time inventory and delivery systems for manufacturing plants and retail businesses.

COVID-19 has alerted us to many of the deficiencies in our national and local health care systems.

COVID-19 has alerted us to the importance of defending the borders between personal liberty, constitutional rights, and governmental authority.

COVID-19 has alerted us to many attacks on the freedoms of religion, speech, and assembly.

And the list goes on. The buzzer on the COVID-19 alarm clock just continues to ring and ring and ring.

COVID-19 and Religious Freedom

The Annual Review is a time to reflect on religious freedom and its place in the law, the nation, and our personal lives. Doing so in the midst of COVID-19 sharpens our focus. This present crisis may well be a moment when we too come to ourselves and realize, perhaps as never before, just how precious and fragile religious freedom is.

Religious Freedom and the Right to Gather with the Faithful

One key realization is that for most faith communities, gathering for worship, ritual, and fellowship is essential; it is not merely an enjoyable social activity.

For example, gathering is an especially powerful element in the doctrine of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. A central mission of the Church is to gather together the scattered family of Abrahamand indeed all who are willingto the ordinances and covenants of the Saviors gospel. Through that gathering, we believe God will establish a people who are of one heart and one mind, who dwell together in righteousness and peace, and who love and care for each other so completely that no poor, spiritually or physically, are found among them.[v]

In ancient and modern scripture, the Lord calls such a people and such a place Zion. Zion is where the pure in heart[vi] dwell. And it is where God Himself can dwell in the midst of His people.[vii] We believe that such a gathering is essential before the Messiah returns again.[viii]

This vision of gathering has been a driving motivation for the Latter-day Saints since the Churchs earliest days and inspired our members to assemble first in Ohio and then in Missouri and Illinois. At each stage, government and mobs combined to persecute and scatter our members until they eventually found a place of gathering outside the United Statesin what later became the state of Utah.

This vision has inspired our building of holy temples, where through sacred ordinances and covenants we eternally gather our families to God.

And this vision continues to inspire Latter-day Saints to gather together in their local congregations to worship God and His Son Jesus Christ, partake of the Sacrament of the Lords Supper, and strengthen, serve, and fellowship each other.[ix]

Being in each others presence is a unique and irreplaceable experience. In Christianity, the God of the Old Testament came to His people in the flesh. Jesus Christ touched people, embraced them, healed them, ministered to them. And we believe we are called to do as He did.[x] He taught, Where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.[xi]

Of course, Latter-day Saints are hardly alone in this need to gather as a religious community. Our Catholic, Orthodox, Protestant, and Evangelical friends gather for mass, baptisms, confirmations, sermons, and myriad other religious purposes.

Our Jewish friends gather for worship in their synagogues.

Our Muslim friends gather in their mosques.

Our friends in the Buddhist, Sikh, and other faith traditions likewise have sacred places to gather and worship together.

Gathering, in short, is at the core of faith and religion. Indeed, if the faithful are not gathering, sooner or later they will begin to scatter.

And because gathering lies at the very heart of religion, the right to gather lies at the very heart of religious freedom.

COVID-19 and Unprecedented Restrictions on Religious Exercise

I believe it is vital for us to recognize that the sweeping governmental restrictions that were placed on religious gatherings at the outset of the COVID-19 crisis truly were extraordinary. In what seemed like an instant, most Western governments and many others simply banned communal worship. These restrictions eliminated public celebrations of Easter, Passover, Ramadan, and other holy days around the world.

No other event in our lifetimeand perhaps no other event since the founding of this nationhas caused quite this kind of widespread disruption of religious gatherings and worship.

The COVID-19 restrictions affected The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in a unique way. The Churchs April 2020 General Conferencea celebration of the bicentennial of the First Vision of the Prophet Joseph Smithhad to be broadcast to a global audience from a small auditorium with only a handful of people attending instead of from our large conference center with a congregation of more than 20,000 people.

Clearly, governments have an affirmative duty to protect public health and safety.[xii] And I believe public officials have most often sought to do the right things to protect the public from the virus. Drawing proper lines to protect both public health and religious exercise in a pandemic is very challenging.

But we cannot deny and we should not forget the speed and intensity with which government power was used to shut down fundamental aspects of religious exercise. These decisions and regulations were unprecedented. For nearly two months, Americans and many others throughout the free world learned firsthand what it means for government to directly prohibit the free exercise of religion.

Reflections on the Nature of Government and the Importance and Fragility of Religious Freedom

Like the prodigal son who came to himself in the midst of crisis, our own time of being in want invites us to carefully reflect on fundamental principles that perhaps we have long taken for granted. Here are a few of my own reflections.

First reflection: Government power can never be unlimited. In our political system, the government derives its just powers from the consent of the governed, to quote the Declaration of Independence. But the just powers of government cannot be unlimited, because they exist most fundamentally to secure the God-given rights of life and liberty, so that each of us can exercise our moral agencythe ability to act for [ourselves] and not to be acted upon[xiii]and be accountable before God for our choices and actions.

Constitutions, representative government, checks and balances, and the rule of law help constrain the tendency of government to exercise unlimited power. Of course, liberty has limits. Government has a just role in fostering a moral environment in which people can live good and honorable lives. But whatever else government officials may be called upon to do, we the people must never allow them to forget that their offices and powers exist to secure our fundamental freedoms and the conditions for exercising those freedoms.

Thus, despite the obvious need for a proper response to COVID-19, we must not become accustomed to sweeping assertions of governmental power. Invoking emergency powers, government executives summarily imposed numerous orders and directives that in many ways are analogous to martial law. These executive orders are unlike laws enacted through the ordinary give-and-take of the democratic process.

No doubt an emergency on the scale of COVID-19 justifies strong measures to protect the public, but we cannot lose sight of the fact that many of these measures are extraordinary assertions of governmental power that can dramatically constrain our basic freedoms. The power of government must have limits.

Second reflection: Religious freedom is paramount among our fundamental rights. This time of restriction and confinement has confirmed for me that no freedom is more important than religious freedom. The freedom of religion properly has been called our first freedom. It is first not only because of its placement as the first right in the First Amendment, but also because of the paramount importance of respecting the moral agency of each person. Living even for a brief few weeks under the restrictions imposed on religious activity by COVID-19 is a stark reminder that nothing is more precious to people of faith than the freedom to worship Almighty God according to the dictates of our own conscience[xiv] and to openly and freely live according to our convictions.

Religious liberty is one of the just and holy principles[xv] underlying the Constitution of the United States. That liberty draws from and in turn reinforces the other rights protected by the First Amendmentthe right to speak freely, to make use of a free press, to peaceably gather with others, and to petition the government to redress grievances.

Freedom of religion stands as a bulwark against unlimited government power. It safeguards the right to think for oneself, to believe what one feels to be true, and to exercise moral agency accordingly. It secures the space necessary to live with faith, integrity, and devotion. It nurtures strong families. It protects communities of faith and the rich and sacred relationships they make possible.

Nothing government does is more important than fostering the conditions wherein religion can flourish.

Third reflection: Religious freedom is fragile. As we have just experienced, religious freedom can quickly be swept aside in the name of protecting other societal interests. Despite COVID-19 risks, North American jurisdictions declared as essential numerous services related to alcohol, animals, marijuana, and other concerns. But often religious organizations and their services were simply deemed nonessential, even when their activities could be conducted safely. In the name of protecting physical health and security or advancing other social values, government often acted without regard to the importance of protecting spiritual health and security. It often seemed to forget that securing religious freedom is as vital as physical health.

Fourth reflection: In a time of crisis, sensitive tools are necessary to balance the demands of religious liberty with the just interests of society. I am not for a moment saying that religious freedom can be unlimited in the middle of a pandemic. Nor am I saying that all government officials have disregarded religious rights. Far from it.

What I am saying is that we can no more disregard the valid claims of religious freedom in a time of crisis than we can disregard the valid claims of freedom of speech, freedom of the press, or freedom from unreasonable searches and seizures. Nor should we prioritize secular interests above religious ones. A health crisis should not become an excuse for a religious freedom crisis.

I believe we must always remember a key principle: specifically, religion should not be treated less favorably than analogous secular activities.

For example, the orders of one state barred Catholic priests from anointing a parishioner with holy oil in the performance of last riteseven if the person was not sick with COVID-19, even if the priest and parishioner were protected with masks and gloves, and even if the oil was applied with a swab. In the same state, my Church could not perform baptisms even under the safest of conditions.

Protecting a persons physical health from the coronavirus is, of course, important, but so is a persons spiritual health. That same state allowed lawyers to meet with people to administer to their legal needs, allowed doctors to meet with people to administer to their health needs, and allowed caregivers to administer food to satisfy nutritional needs. But it did not allow a clergyperson to administer to a persons religious needs, even when the risk of all these activities was essentially the same.

This example and many more like it illustrate a profound devaluing of religion. We can and must do better.

I also believe we must always remember a second essential principle: namely, policy makers, even in a crisis, should limit the exercise of religion only when it truly is necessary to preserve public health and safety.

When the needs of society are great, officials should still ask whether there is some way of addressing those needs other than by burdening or banning the exercise of religion. With goodwill and a little creativity, ways can almost always be found to fulfill both societys needs and the imperative to protect religious freedom.

After all, the COVID-19 virus is not attracted uniquely to religious people. As most of us now recognize, a variety of methods can be used to mitigate the risk of the virus that do not require outright prohibitions on religious worship or gatherings.

The Opportunity Before Us

The COVID-19 crisis has presented us with a unique opportunity to reaffirm and shore up religious freedom. We have witnessed the governments swift, well-intentioned, but often dangerous breaching of the boundaries that protect the free exercise of religion. Do we hear the buzzer on the alarm clock? This is a wake-up call for all of us. Those fundamental boundaries and protections must be healed, renewed, and fortified.

While believers and their religious organizations must be good citizens in a time of crisis, never again can we allow government officials to treat the exercise of religion as simply nonessential. Never again must the fundamental right to worship God be trivialized below the ability to buy gasoline.

Conclusion

In the midst of crisis, the prodigal son in the biblical parable came to himself and began the long journey back to his home. No doubt in that moment he realized the error of his ways. But more fundamentally, I think he also realized that he had forgotten who he was. There, among the swine, he remembered. And then everything changed.

In our understandable desire to combat COVID-19, we, too, as a society may have forgotten something about who we are and what is most precious. Perhaps we have not fully remembered that faith and the right to exercise it are central to our identity as believers and to all that we deem good and right and worthy of protection. Now is the time for us to heed the wake-up call, to remember, and to act. That we may do so is my hope and my earnest prayer.

As I now come to the end of my message, I joyfully exercise what for me, personally, is one of the greatest religious liberties. I express these thoughts in the name of Him whom I serve, whom I love, and whom I represent, even Jesus Christ, amen.

And When He Came to Himself (Luke 15:17)

MINISTER’S MOMENT / By REV. WILL WILSON | A Christian perspective on freedom – Kilgore News Herald

Modern understandings of freedom are grounded in the idea of the absolute autonomy of the individual.

We moderns believe that freedom is the ability to do whatever we want, whenever we want it, and however we want without any constraints. This definition sounds attractive, but if it is true then inevitably my freedom will eventually impinge on someone elses freedom.

For example, someones absolute freedom to smoke could rob another persons freedom to breath clean air. Another example: my freedom to choose to play loud music on my stereo could potentially rob someone elses freedom to live in peace and quiet.

By now you get the point: true freedom cannot be defined as the ability to do whatever one wants, when they want it, because one persons freedom could be another persons limitation.

What, then, is a better account of freedom? From a Christian perspective, true freedom is the ability not to do whatever we want, but what God wants. When the children of Israel were enslaved in Egypt, the only choice they were given was to serve the Pharaoh and do his bidding. Pharaoh determined all aspects of Israels lifewhen they worked, when (or if) they rested, and whom they worshiped.

The Israelites were slaves in Egypt. Yet, upon their deliverance from bondage, their freedom from Pharaoh meant that they were now free for the service and worship of God. The ten commandments were given as laws through which Israel could live into this newly received freedom.

Ive heard a lot about freedom lately as it relates to the recent government mandated facemasks. Many people refuse to wear them because they feel that the directive is a threat to their right to choose to dress how they want. Some feel that it should not be the responsibility of government to tell its citizens what they can or cannot wear.

In my opinion, such sensibilities reveal an unbiblical understanding of what being free actually means. Its not to do whatever one pleases, but rather it is the opportunity to do what is morally right by God and by neighbor.

Through Christs atoning death on the cross and Gods raising him from the dead, we Christians are now free from sin and free for loving God and each other. So, exercise your freedom and put on a mask.

The impact of the health crisis on freedom of expression and media freedom – Report by the Secretary General of the Council of Europe, Marija Pejinovi…

Over a year ago, the declaration adopted by the Committee of Ministers in Helsinki on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the Council of Europe stressed that "free and pluralist public debate is an essential condition for democracy and we must take firm action to reverse the recent deterioration of freedom of expression in Europe". The work of the Council of Europe, including the activity of the Platform for Strengthening the Protection of Journalism and the Safety of Journalists, indicates that this trend has not been reversed, far from it. This challenge calls for co-ordinated action in various areas affecting freedom of expression.

The report published by the Secretary General aims to highlight areas where freedom of expression may be put under stress in the present circumstances, and to recall the applicable standards and the means available to member States and the Council of Europe to meet the challenges they face.

Updated July 11, 2020 07:22 AM GMT (03:22 AM EST)

Litecoin closed the previous 4 hours up 0.11% ($0.05); this denotes the 3rd candle in a row an increase has occurred. Relative to other instruments in the Top Cryptos asset class, Litecoin ranked 3rd since the previous 4 hours in terms of percentage price change.

Litecoin is down 0.18% ($0.08) since yesterday, marking the 2nd day in a row it has gone down. The change in price came along side change in volume that was down 36.48% from previous day, but up 64.94% from the Friday of last week. Out of the 5 instruments in the Top Cryptos asset class, Litecoin ended up ranking 3rd for the day in terms of price change relative to yesterday. The daily price chart of Litecoin below illustrates.

The first thing we should note is that the current price of Litecoin is sitting close to its 20, 50 and 100 day moving averages; moving average crosses often indicate a change in momentum, so this may be worth keeping an eye on. Trend traders will want to observe that the strongest trend appears on the 14 day horizon; over that time period, price has been moving up. Also of note is that on a 90 day basis price appears to be forming a base which could the stage for it being a support/resistance level going forward. For additional context, note that price has gone up 7 out of the past 14 days. Also, candlestick traders! Note we see pin bar pattern appearing here as well.

For laughs, fights, or genuinely useful information, lets see what the most popular tweets pertaining to Litecoin for the past day were:

This cryptocurrency, Dogecoin: shit started as a joke back in 2013, right?actually a pretty solid crypto with a silly name attached to it running on a similar code as Litecoin without a cap so its very volatile/reliable & low exchange fees

It seems like the spirit of the Cypherpunk Manifesto is in favor of experimentation and sharing of code to make a better world so forks & alts fit that.Again very different story if there was a fundraise that changes things a lot Im talking Litecoin, Monero etc.
