Why the Royal Family could become ‘500 million’ richer – Evening Standard

An in-depth investigation into the Royal Familys finances has projected the monarchy could become 500 million richer in the future, due to assets relating to the Sovereign Grant.

Currently, Royal Family members are supported by a number of revenue streams including the Duchy of Cornwall, Duchy of Lancaster, and the Grant. The money from the Sovereign Grant is where the 500m increase is predicted to come from.

Funds for the Grant come from 15% of annual profits earned by the Crown Estate, a land portfolio handled by a third party that includes significant areas such as Regent Street and much of the British coastline.

According to an investigation by Tortoise, the British governments intentions to expand renewable energy operations could see the royals earn millions as offshore wind farms would be built on the coastline - i.e. on Crown Estate property. As a result, those businesses would have to pay rent to the Estate.

Speaking to Tortoise, Energy & Climate Intelligence Units Dr. Jonathan Marshall said: The total cumulative annual revenue from all [windfarm] projects that are currently under construction, or that could be built, is 8.4 billion. The Crown Estate would take two per cent of this as rent, or 168 million a year.

Marshall estimated that the Crown Estate could make 2.52 billion as a result and as the royals derive 15% from that, they could pocket 500 million - despite having nothing to do with the windfarms themselves.

The Tortoise investigation also found that since the 2008 financial crisis, royal finances had ballooned as a result of the introduction of the Sovereign Grant Act in 2011. The report discovered that the Royal Family had more than doubled its earnings between 2008/2009 and 2020, a dramatic shift from 63.5 million to 142.4 million per year today.

Beyond the Sovereign Grant, the Queen also earns money from the Duchy of Lancaster, while Prince Charles derives funds from the Duchy of Cornwall - funds which are also used to support his children Prince William, Prince Harry and their families.

Although Harry and Meghan have stepped down as senior royals and plan to become financially independent, they are still supported by Prince Charles through the Duchy of Cornwall for the time being.

The Sussexes wrote on their official website Sussex Royal that they no longer receive funding through the Sovereign Grant, thereby making them members of the Royal Family with financial independence.

Do You Need To Detox Mold From Your Body? Mold Toxicity, Explained – Women’s Health

Whether warm temperatures outdoors or high humidity levels in your home any ol' time are to blame, you may be inviting mold in. Chances are, you probably dont even realize that mold sneaked its way into your house, whether it's in your bathroom, basement, or near windows. You have to wonder, how bad is mold exposure, really...and do you need to worry about "detoxing" from mold from time to time?

Wellness forums and blogs might lead you to freak out about the presence of a single spore of mold inside your home, and may even convince you that youre going to develop mold toxicity if you dont remove it right away. Many also often recommend alternative treatment options for detoxing the body from mold such as activated charcoal supplements or dietary cleanses.

But many Western medicine experts arent convinced that these practices are actually effective. (FWIW, integrative medicine researchers arent even sure mold exposure is definitely causing chronic illnesses.) Some people who are sensitive to mold to begin with may develop allergy-like symptoms or even a more severe mold infection, but others might not develop any symptoms at all, explains Purvi Parikh, MD, a board-certified allergist with Allergy & Asthma Network.

Heres what you need to know about the mold that could be lurking in your homeand the degree of harm it can potentially cause.

So, no mold is really good or pleasant to have aroundbut, it may not be as dangerous as you think to have it in your home. Theres not enough scientific proof that mold is toxic for the average person, and you may not even know its in your house, says Dr. Parikh.

Household mold, which may make its home in an old house with water damage, for example, is more problematic for people who have mold allergies, asthma (both of which can be triggered or worsened by mold exposure), or are severely immune-compromised.

Theres no reason at all to live in constant fear of mold if you're an average healthy adult, Dr. Parikh says.

The most common types of fungus that will cause these allergy or asthma attacks or respiratory infections if the immune system has a severe enough reaction are Aspergillus, Alternaria, Penicillium, and Cladosporium, says Dr. Parikh. When people refer to black mold as especially dangerous, its actually a misnomer, because all of the above molds are blackish or dark in color, and one isnt necessarily worse to have in your home than another.

Its possible to develop a mold allergy over time from frequent exposure to mold in your home, Dr. Parikh says, especially if youre predisposed to environmental allergies. In the case of immune-compromised people (who are more susceptible to certain conditions in general), the body can develop an infection if the mold enters the lungs or bloodstream.

So its important to pay attention to whats potentially growing in your home, and monitor any symptoms, but theres no reason at all to live in constant fear of mold, Dr. Parikh says.

Mold toxicitythe idea that mold can produce harmful substances called mycotoxins that can contribute to autoimmune conditions and other chronic diseaseis a bit controversial. Thats because there isnt any kind of test for it or scientific evidence that any kind of disease exists solely because of mold exposure. Keep in mind that theres a lot of misinformation out there, both about the toxicity of mold and the treatment options.

Theres clear, validated proof that breathing in enough mold in your home over a period of time can cause or exacerbate both allergies and asthma, Dr. Parikh says. It can even cause an invasive respiratory infection, she adds, but any chronic health condition resulting from mold hasnt yet been proven to exist.

If youre experiencing allergy symptoms in your home, similar to a dust or pollen allergylike itchy, watery eyes, coughing, a stuffy, runny nose, or even a rash or eczemamold might be playing a role, Dr. Parikh says. The same goes for more severe asthma symptoms than usual, like frequent asthma attacks, wheezing, and shortness of breath.

Your symptoms would be different if you have a mold-related infection; youll likely have a fever above 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit and you may experience low blood pressure, dizziness, and even shortness of breath. But, Mold infections are actually pretty rare unless you have a very weak immune system, says Dr. Parikh. If youre immune-compromised, youll need to take any infection more seriously anyway, she adds.

Treatment for mold-related allergies and infection varies from person to person. If you think there might be mold in your house, and you develop allergy or asthma symptoms, its best to visit an allergist or pulmonologist to have testing done. An allergist might prescribe eye drops, nasal spray, or antihistamines, depending on your case (but dont self-medicate, Dr. Parikh sayslet your doc make the call!).

Allergy shots have also proven to be effective in treating mold allergies by halting the immune systems reactions in some cases, studies show. For more severe respiratory symptoms related to asthma, a doctor might prescribe you an inhaler, or additional medications such as steroids.

If you have evidence of complications from a mold infection, specifically a high fever, severe chest pain, or dizziness, you may need to visit the emergency room. Mold infections can typically be treated with an antifungal medication, which is customized to the type of fungus thats causing the infection, says Dr. Parikh.

There are various treatment methods out there for mold exposure, like sweating it out and even gut health cleanses that claim to detox the moldbut none of them have been proven by studies to treat anything (just like so-called mold toxicity cant necessarily be proven as a medical condition).

For example, activated charcoal is often used in emergency rooms to prevent treat substance abuse overdosebut it wont necessarily do anything to treat or detox mold exposure, says Dr. Parikh (despite what health blogs say). Probioticswhich are in and of themselves beneficial for your overall gut healthhave also been thrown around as a treatment for mold-related illness. But they cant treat an active bacterial infection in any way, Dr. Parikh notes.

Many touted mold treatment options also arent FDA-approved and may not be covered by health insurance, Dr. Parikh points out, so you should approach what you read about mold with a critical eye.

Theres no need to panic about small amounts of mold. Of course, if you recently had a flood or water damage, its worth contacting a mold inspector. Or, if youre in a high-risk immune category or have allergy and asthma symptoms that might be related to mold, you should definitely address it, Dr. Parikh says. Regular home inspections should be able to detect mold, though.

Cipla through a landmark agreement with Gilead Sciences Inc., was granted a license to manufacture and distribute the antiviral medicine, remdesivir, in 127 countries, including South Africa. As many of these countries are low-income countries and emerging markets that face obstacles in accessing healthcare, Cipla will expand supply to several sub-Saharan African countries.

This authorisation for emergency use was granted by the FDA on the basis that SARS-CoV-2 can cause a serious or life-threatening disease or condition, their view that the known and potential benefits of remdesivir outweigh the known and potential risks, and the fact that there is currently no adequate approved alternative treatment available for Covid-19.

Remdesivir is also approved for emergency and compassionate use in India, Japan and Singapore on similar grounds. More recently, on 25 June 2020, remdesivir was recommended for a conditional marketing authorisation by the European Medicines Agency, a regulatory mechanism to facilitate early access to medicines that fulfil an unmet medical need, including in emergency situations in response to public health threats such as the current Covid-19 pandemic.

The Emergency Use Authorisation (EUA) for remdesivir was first issued by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on 1 May 2020, mainly based upon a study funded by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) in the USA. The study showed that remdesivir shortened the time to recovery in patients hospitalized with Covid-19.

The authorisation for emergency use was granted by the FDA on the basis that SARS-CoV-2 can cause a serious or life-threatening disease or condition, their view that the known and potential benefits of remdesivir outweigh the known and potential risks, and the fact that there is currently no adequate approved alternative treatment available for Covid-19.

Early in the pandemic, it was clear that retailers would struggle as the coronavirus halted foot traffic and forced temporary store closures. Industry experts expected a tidal wave of bankruptciesthen did a double take when it didn't happen.

Well, its happening...and its hitting the apparel sector especially hard. In the last week a laundry list of apparel companies whose clothes you shouldnt put in the laundry filed for bankruptcy.

Sales in retail overall have rebounded a bit, up 1% year over year, but clothing and accessories have been the hardest-hit category by far. Just-Style reports May sales in the sector were still down -63% year over year.

In total, U.S. retailers are expected to permanently close between 20,000 and 25,000 stores this year.

Zoom out: Even though apparel has been the weakest link, the broader retail industry is definitely still riding the struggle bus: Kitchen goods retailer Sur La Table filed for bankruptcy yesterday, while Bed Bath and Beyond experienced a 49% drop-off in Q2 sales. And the hits keep coming: Walgreens announced plans to cut 4,000+ jobs in its Boots UK business in the United Kingdom after an 85% drop in foot traffic in April.

Looking to Join the PA Online Poker Party: partypoker Nearing Regulatory Approval – Play Pennsylvania

A second online poker operator partypoker PA is likely for Pennsylvania as early as August, breaking the monopoly PokerStars has enjoyed in the market since November of 2019.

Party Poker is a player favorite internationally and the second-biggest online poker operator. The partypoker platform, now owned by GVC Holdings, is already in use in New Jersey. For three years running (2017-2019), partypoker has won the title of Poker Operator of the Year at the EGR Operator Awards.

MGM and GVCs joint online gambling company,ROAR Digital, operates as BetMGM in the US. That company also includes the partypoker site in New Jersey.

ROAR, also the operator of partypoker PA, may have its license approved as soon as Aug. 5, the next meeting of the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board (PGCB).

Thats according to Cyrus Pitre, Chief Enforcement Counsel for the PGCB, during Wednesdays monthly Board meeting.

If it doesnt come on that date, it shouldnt be long after.

And a third operator, WSOP.com could follow soon afterward.

Caesars Interactive Entertainment, which owns WSOP.com, has had approval from the PGCB since February 2020, but its online software provider, 888, has yet to get approved in PA. But 888 is already approved by gaming regulators in New Jersey, Nevada, and Delaware.

The eventual increase to three and eventually more online poker rooms in PA will only grow the healthy market even more. Players will have more tournament and game options, plus more sign-up bonuses and promotions. Operators will have to compete for market share, which should benefit the players. Plus, states like neighboring NJ have shown that theres room in the market for multiple operators.

Furthermore, if PA eventually joins the Multi-State Internet Gaming Agreement, it would mean a huge boost to player pools and thus tournament prize pools for not only PA players, but those in NJ, Nevada, and Delaware as well. The latter three already share player pools per the agreement, and there is speculation that PA regulators may follow suit.

But a resolution of the Wire Act case may need to come first. At present, PA gambling law requires separate servers to be located in PA. But it doesnt rule out the possibility for interstate player pooling.

Even without that shared pool yet in place, PA has jumped to the top of the pile in terms of monthly online poker revenue in the US. Since launching in November, PA has posted the highest revenue each month (through May), except for March. In March, NJ surpassed it by less than $500,000 albeit with three operators vs. PAs one.

The testing of the partypoker platform by the PGCB has already begun. Also under review is the BetMGM app, which will include interactive slots and table games.

ROAR Digital has invested $450 million in the PA rollouts. ROARs network hosts its own partypoker-branded online poker room along with poker rooms under the BetMGM and Borgata Poker brands.

New York Court Approves Investigation Into $10 Billion Cryptocurrency Created By A Presidential Candidate – Forbes

A New York appeals court today unleashed the states attorney general to investigate a number of businesses behind the tether cryptocurrency. While there are no formal accusations of fraud or other wrongdoing, the opinion, from an appellate division of New Yorks Supreme Court, gives teeth to subpoenas filed by the attorney general. The respondents, including both Tether Holdings Limited and the Bitfinex cryptocurrency exchange, had unsuccessfully fought the subpoenas at the trial level, before appealing.

The news comes at an awkward time for Brock Pierce, 39, the creator of the cryptocurrency, who this week announced he was running for President of the United States. A representative of the New York State Attorney General says he cannot confirm or deny that the investigation includes Pierce.

In 2014, Pierce, who is running as an independent on a pro-technology platform, created the tether currency as a way for cryptocurrency investors to quickly enter and exit a position. Unlike bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies, tether was meant to have a stable price, backed one-to-one by real U.S. dollars. But unlike traditional dollars, it can be moved instantly, while actually cashing out a crypto-asset using banks can take days, and many banks wont support the service at all.

By November 2018 questions about whether or not the cryptocurrency was actually backed dollar-for-dollar started to circulate and a predecessor of the state attorney general of New York, Letitia James, officially began the investigation. After turning up some promising leads however, Tether and Bitfinex filed an appeal resulting in a temporary halt of the investigation.

With the opinion order dated today, that investigation can resume. The result of what state attorney general James uncovers could impact any of countless owners of the tether cryptocurrency, with a total market value of $10 billion, and depending on whether or not what is found is good or bad for tether, pave the way for a flock of new, regulated, competitors.

Today's decision validates our office's ability to use its broad and comprehensive investigative powers to protect New Yorkers, said James in a statement provided to Forbes. Not even virtual currencies are above the law. We are pleased with the court's decision, and will continue to protect the interests of investors in the marketplace.

Officially, the case involves, BFXNA Inc. and BFXWW Inc., wholly-owned subsidiaries of iFinex, which operates the Bitfinex cryptocurrency exchange, and Tether Holdings Limited the holding company for Tether Limited, Tether Operations Limited, and Tether International Limited. Though Pierce is not mentioned in the opinion, he not only founded Tether in 2014, but is the co-founder of Block.One, behind the 11th largest cryptocurrency, EOS, valued at $900 million, and Blockchain Capital, one of the most influential venture capital firms in crypto.

Shortly after James started her investigation into the now-Presidential candidates business she issued three subpoenas for information going back to 2015, according to the opinion. During the investigation her team turned up information (not disclosed in the subpoena), that unable to get banking support, the respondents were forced to use a foreign entity to process customer deposits and withdrawals, according to the opinion.

Specifically, the attorney general previously alleged that Bitfinex had handed over $850 million to third-party payments processor Crypto Capital Corp., based in Panama, to handle customers-withdrawal requests. When the company failed to hold up its end of the bargain the respondents allegedly hid the losses through unspecified machinations, leading some to wonder if theyd simply started printing new tether cryptocurrency without any backing.

At around this time, Tether changed the wording on its site to show that instead of every tether being backed by a U.S. dollar, they were backed by Tether Holdings reserves, which include unspecified currency, cash equivalents, and other assets and receivables from loans made by Tether [Holdings] to third parties, according to the opinion. In turn, the respondents also successfully managed to get the investigation halted, temporarily though it may have been.

Grounds for the stay were rooted in questions surrounding an old New York law called the Martin Act that gives the state unusually broad investigatory powers even if malicious intent isnt proved and no one was actually injured. In certain cases, the act could give the attorney general the power to investigate as a way to avoid harm.

From the Supreme Courts opinion, authored by associate justice Ellen Gesmer and concurred by three other justices:

Perhaps counter-intuitively, since the stay was issued in September 2019, tethers market cap exploded from $4.1 billion to $10 billion today, in spite of the doubts about whether the currency was actually backed by dollars, perhaps giving credibility to Tethers value proposition. Also over that time though, a newer stablecoin, USDC, co-created by cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase and crypto tech firm Circle, has risen to a market cap of $1 billion today and an even newer competitor, DAI, backed by a wide range of collateral has risen to $190 million.A loss to Tether would almost certainly be a win for the competition, and vice-versa.

Of particular interest to Pierce however is another trend that relates directly to his candidacy. Since Covid-19 a number of Congressional bills have called for the creation of a digital dollar similar to tether but sanctioned by the Federal Reserve. As James' investigation into Brocks creation picks up steam, questions about whether or not thats a conflict of interest will certainly have to be answered.

Bitcoin Adoption: $1 Million or More in BTC now Held by Over 13,000 Cryptocurrency Addresses – Crowdfund Insider

There are currently more than 13,000 Bitcoin addresses that are now holding at least $1 million worth of BTC, according to Glassnode data.

You would have to own around 108 BTC, at current prices, to become a US dollar millionaire (in Bitcoin). The number of Bitcoin addresses with balances of more than $1 million reached a record high during the historic crypto market bull run of 2017. In December of 2017, the BTC price had surged to nearly $20,000 and the market cap of all crypto-assets had surpassed the $800 billion mark by early January 2018.

Its worth noting that the digital currency market has not been able to reach these historic highs, or even get close to them, during the past few years. Despite Bitcoin (and the larger crypto market) prices not being able to break previous highs, Glassnode data confirms that the number of addresses holding at least 100 BTC have remained at about the same levels in recent years.

Its possible that many of these BTC addresses belong to large cryptocurrency exchanges and digital asset custodians, who have consistently maintained large amounts of Bitcoin (and other cryptos) in their reserves. Notably, there are more than 1 million Bitcoins which were most likely mined by Satoshi Nakamoto, the pseudonymous inventor of the flagship cryptocurrency. Satoshis coins have not moved during the past 10 years.

Although its possible to check how many BTC addresses hold at least $1 million worth of the digital currency, it cant really be determined just how many individuals are actually Bitcoin millionaires.

We would have to find out how many people or entities control the 13,290 BTC addresses with $1 million (or more) in Bitcoins, in order to estimate out how many Bitcoin millionaires there are. This may not be practical because many people dont publicly disclose their wealth.

As reported recently, UK Millennials with 25,000+ in investable assets are increasingly investing in cryptocurrencies, according to a recent survey.

Global P2P Bitcoin (BTC) exchange LocalBitcoins has reported over $29 million in annual revenue for 2019. But P2P Bitcoin marketplace Paxful recently overtook LocalBitcoins in BTC trading volume.

Last month, it was revealed that Grayscale Investments is buying 1,190 Bitcoins per day, and is on track to control 10% of the BTC supply by the next Bitcoin halving in 2024.

Call of Duty BANS OK gesture over fears its a right-wing extremist symbol – The Sun

CALL of Duty has abolished an in-game gesture over fears it's a hate symbol.

The signal in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare caused a player's character to hold up their hand in a commonly used "Okay" gesture.

The move involves holding one's index and thumb together and was often used by players during online multiplayer matches to signal a win.

Used innocently by millions worldwide, it has also been described by the US Anti-Defamation League as "a sincere expression of white supremacy".

News of the quiet removal of the gesture or "emote" by Call of Duty (Cod) creator Infinity Ward was reported by The Independent.

Neither Infinity Ward or publisher Activision have confirmed the reason for the gestures removal.

However, it's widely believed to be part of an official campaign to stamp out racism on Modern Warfare and its spin-off game, Warzone.

"There is no place for racist content in our game," Infinity Ward wrote on Twitter last month.

"This is an effort we began with launch and we need to do a better job.

"Were issuing thousands of daily bans of racist and hate-oriented names. But we know we have to do more."

White supremacist groups adopted the "Okay" gesture in 2017, according to The Independent.

Popularised by notorious social media site 4Chan, "alt-right" supporters are often photographed performing the gesture.

The alt-right is a loosely connected far-right, white nationalist movement based in the United States that has spread across the globe.

The Okay gesture was co-opted to trick the media into a reaction, but is now used so widely that experts believe the symbol's meaning has changed.

It was flashed by the man accused of killing 51 people at mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand, last year when he was in court.

The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) added the "Okay" gesture to its list of hate symbols in September 2019.

It's said to be a way for alt-right supports to communicate with one another, though the gesture is largely a "popular trolling tactic", the ADL said.

The US anti-hate group added that the "overwhelming usage" of the symbol today is still to show approval or that someone is OK.

Among other changes, Infinity Ward announced last month it would add additional resources to monitor and identify racist content.
