Local anti-tax groups find even they need big government aid sometimes – Seattle Times

Were all socialists now, apparently. No, really it turns out even the most rugged of the free marketeers have been coaxed by the coronavirus to fall into the government safety net.

The national press has been filled with stories this week about how the well-connected, the billionaires, the white-shoe lobbying firms and the most anti-government think tanks all got relief money under Congress $2 trillion coronavirus rescue act.

The latter includes no-new-taxes activist Grover Norquist, who infamously wants to drown the government in the bathtub. Also the libertarian Ayn Rand Institute, and anti-debt crusader Citizens Against Government Waste. All these groups that pillory big government suddenly found common cause in lining up to get a piece of one of the biggest government spending programs of all time.

And Im actually OK with that. Its what it was for to provide a measure of relief to businesses in need, of any and all types. The Seattle Times got a Paycheck Protection Program loan, too and we definitely didnt head into 2020 thinking wed be the recipient of government aid.

But I wonder whether this awkward moment will spark any internal reflection about the lift-yourselves-by-your-bootstraps, no taxes ever mantra that dominates the conservative political world.

Take, say, Washington states own free-market think tanks. The Washington Policy Center, a Seattle-based conservative group, got between $350,000 to $1 million from the federal relief program (the loans, which can convert to forgivable grants, were reported in ranges in data released Monday).

Meanwhile, heres the philosophy the think tank uses to describe itself in its annual reports:

We dont receive government money. We dont ask for it and we wouldnt take it even if it were offered. WPC relies on the generous support of our donors people like you who understand that free-markets are superior to a government rigged economy, and liberty is the air that a free people must breathe.

Except for this one time, I guess. To keep on breathing those liberty vapors required being put on a government ventilator.

Or take the Freedom Foundation, a business-backed outfit out of Olympia. Its been rallying against government spending and taxes since the early 1990s. Recently its been on a jihad against unions. During the pandemic it has called for governors to halt all public-sector union dues payments, on the grounds the union organizations dont need the money and the workers do.

But unions specifically werent eligible for the paycheck protection program, so they were left to fend for themselves. Not so the Freedom Foundation, though it got between $350,000 to $1 million from the federal relief fund, records show.

We have a vision of a day when opportunity, responsible self-governance, and free markets flourish in America because its citizens understand and defend the principles from which freedom is derived, the Freedom Foundation says on its website. We accept no government support.

Maybe just this one eensy-weensy time.

The laissez-faire capitalist Ayn Rand Institute, in California, went still further, rationalizing that going on the dole this one time would somehow strike a moral blow against big government.

It would be a terrible injustice for pro-capitalists to step aside and leave the funds to those indifferent or actively hostile to capitalism, it explained in a statement, titled To Take, or Not to Take.

Look, Im a capitalist too, but what a crock all that is. As I said up top: Its fine for any qualified business or association to get the relief money. Yes, even Kanye West, whose Yeezy clothing and footwear line got between $2 million and $5 million. Even the paid anti-government scolds. The programs point was to disperse the money as rapidly and widely as possible, to keep the economy somewhat functioning during this pandemic. It did that to more than 16,000 businesses in Washington state alone.

But To Take, or Not to Take that is not the question. The coronavirus has shown, if nothing else, that we all sometimes need a little boost. We have just been treated to a national case study in how we all depend on strong governmental social and health safety nets and not only when theres a pandemic.

This is not about taking at all, or shouldnt be. Its about giving back paying for basic good government and then, sometimes, when you need it, receiving help.

So can we at least dispense now with the breath of liberty canards? The drowning the government in the bathtub nonsense? The whole no-tax bluster?

Because now we know: Even groups that put freedom right in their name have apparently concluded theyre A-OK with some big-government, debt-financed, taxpayer-backed collectivism after all.

CEO Threatens To Blow Latino Couple’s Heads Off After Making Wrong Turn Into His Driveway Looking For Wedding Rehearsal RM – TooFab

He denied pulling the gun to cops... until he was shown the pictures.

A Hispanic couple driving through a wealthy area of Colorado looking for their friend's wedding rehearsal found something else instead: a furious CEO who allegedly threatened to blow their heads off.

On June 12, Chris Ochoa and his girlfriend were traveling through Elk Canyon Estates in Sedalia, and followed his GPS to the exact address given to him by the groom.

After pulling into the driveway, they realized they didn't recognize any of the cars there, so immediately made a u-turn to head back out and call their friend. They didn't get very far.

"As I was driving back up the main road, a large red truck pulled in front of me and cut me off, blocking the road," Ochoa wrote on Facebook, with the pictures to prove it.

He said the man who would later be identified as Paul Favret, the CEO of a local energy company jumped out of the truck and pulled a gun on them.

"He then ran to my driver's side window (which was down) and continued to point the gun and yell that he was 'going to blow our head off!' and that he 'wants to blow my head off'," he claimed in the post.

"He did not ask us any questions about where we were going. He simply cut us off and assaulted us. Apparently, the u-turn that I had made was in his driveway; and he wasn't happy about it."

With their hands up and not daring to move, knowing he could shoot at any time, the couple continuously apologized and told him they were just searching for their friends' wedding party.

"We apologized for turning around in his driveway but he would not put the gun down," he said. "He remained in rage for what felt like an eternity."

As he moved around the car, his girlfriend quickly snapped the pics and called 911.

"We felt in danger as he kept pointing the gun at our faces and continued to tell us how much he wanted to kill us," he said.

A member of the wedding party finally arrived and Favret eventually backed off and retreated to his house. When the couple arrived at the correct venue nearby, they showed the photo to the owner of the house, the groom's aunt, who identified Favret as the HOA President.

Ochoa who identifies as Mexican-American later found out that two other cars had gone to the incorrect address because of the GPS mix-up, but no one else had guns pulled on them. He also discovered he and his girlfriend were the only minorities in the entire neighborhood at the time, and he believes this is why he was targeted.

However, when Ochoa told police he wanted to press charges, he claimed the groom's aunt told him "If you press charges and disrupt my community I will cancel the wedding."

"I was in disbelief that she put me in the position of choosing between ruining my best friend's wedding or doing what is right," he wrote. "I had no choice but to walk away. It amazed me that she was willing to cancel her own nephew's wedding because of this."

Ochoa was so upset over the incident he ended up missing the wedding the next day. However now that it has passed, he decided to push ahead with pressing charges.

In an incident report, Favret initially denied pulling a gun. But when deputies showed him the pictures, he changed his story, claiming he didn't remember that part because of pain medication he was on for shoulder surgery.

He issued a statement through his company Resource Energy, claiming: "The Facebook post in question does not portray an accurate version of the events. However, I deeply regret my actions that day."

"I had no way of knowing the identities of the individuals in the vehicle," he said. "I just saw the unknown vehicle very close to the home at a time when we were not expecting any visitors and our property is clearly marked with our address and is about 1/2 mile from their destination."

Favret also claimed he's had problems with intruders on his property in the past engaging in illegal elk hunting.

According to 9News, The Douglas County District Attorney's Office has now filed five criminal charges against Favret, including two felony menacing charges and three misdemeanors relating to gun crimes.

He has until the end of the week to turn himself in; if he does not an arrest warrant will be issued.

If convicted, he could face up to three years in prison.

He declined an on-camera interview with the site, but sent a text exclaiming "Now that I am healing... and understand what really happened I feel terrible that I scared them. I scared myself."

‘Remember the name!’ – Greenwood merits Rooney comparisons and heads for Man Utd record books – Goal.com

Teen sensation is among a select band of players to hit goals in consecutive league games for the Red Devils and his talent is hard to play down

On a night when Manchester United made Premier League history, another moment of magic from 18-year-old Mason Greenwood inspired them to victory.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer sat relatively silently on the sidelines at Villa Park as he watched his side extend their unbeaten run to 17 games in all competitions and become the first team in Premier League history to win four consecutive games by a three-goalor highermargin.

United cruised to this3-0 victory over Aston Villa and it was Greenwood again providingthe standout moment.

Solskjaer has been keen to downplay any links between Greenwood and great players of Uniteds past but its now hard to ignore the comparisons between the teenager and the clubs all-time leading goalscorer Wayne Rooney.

Remember the name!, commentator Clive Tyldesley roared when Rooney burst onto the scene for Everton in October 2002 when he washailed as the coming force in English football.

Greenwood had just turned one and will have had no idea of Rooneys heroics that day against Arsenal. But now, 18 years later,he has taken on the mantle of the most exciting young talent to push through in a generation.

His work off the ball has been praised as much as his goal scoring and it was another confident performance from the attacker, who has nailed down his position in the starting XI. But for all the praise of his work rate and pace it is his goals which are setting him apart from the rest.

Spare a thought for any defender trying to deal with him.A coach might demand that a centre-back shows an attacker onto his weaker footbut Greenwood doesnt have one.

Some wonderful work from Anthony Martial in the build-up to United's second goal, after winning the ball back off Tyrone Mings, preceded a sublime finish from Greenwood. From outside the box - andwith his supposedly weaker right foot - he beat Pepe Reina with a rocket of a strike.

That brought his total to 16in all competitions and nine in the league;the last teenager to score that many in a single league campaign was a certain former United No.10 in Rooney.

Solskjaer might not want to attract thecomparisons but the evidence is there for all to see. The homegrown prospecthas the talent that could be key to Uniteds fast-flowing attacking front line for years to come.

His goal, which came in added time in the first half, settled a tie which at first United were slow to get in to. Solskjaer named an unchanged side for the fourth consecutive league game, the first time United had done so since November 2006, but their effortswere fruitless early on despite the possession they enjoyed.

While Villa pressed the visitors in the opening exchanges, Unitedlooked lethargic and not at all like the fast attacking team we have seen since the restart.

Anwar El Ghazi and Douglas Luiz both had efforts from range which werent anything to test David de Gea. On another day Jack Grealish would have given them the lead when he got on the end of a great ball from Ezri Konsa but the United target could only volley his effort over the bar at the far post.

Paul Pogba was then caught in possession and Trezeguet fired a warning sign as his effort ricocheted off De Geas post.

A controversial penalty decision moments later, however, ensured United took the lead. Fernandes pirouetted on the ball and brushed intoKonza as he did so. The Portuguese was looking for the contactbut VAR backed referee Jon Moss decision. Fernandes duly dispatched from the spot for his seventh league goal of the season.

United sparked into life after the goal with a power injected into their front line that had been missing in the opening half hour. Greenwood, Martial and Marcus Rashford all had driving runs into the box that had to be dealt with by Reina before Greenwood scored Uniteds second before the break.

Solskjaer will say he is not interested in records but becomingthe first side to win by a three-goal or higher margin for four consecutive league games is some feat, especially a team that not so long ago was looking for consistency and creativity.

Article continues below

Pogba, who put in another classy performance in the hub of Uniteds midfield, got the third. A Fernandes corner was delivered straight to the Frenchman waiting on the edge of the box. He took one touch before perfectly guiding his curled shot into the bottom corner.

United were in cruise control by that stageand it gave Solskjaer the opportunity to rest his key men. Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Greenwood, Martial, Nemanja Matic and Fernandes all came off ahead of another busy week.

The United boss might decide to rotate his squad with three big fixtures to come but one things for sure; Greenwoods going to be key. Remember the name.

It is easy to look at a blindingly beautiful star such as Priyanka Chopra Jonas and think: "When has someone like that ever struggled to be accepted?"

But it turns out the Bollywood-Hollywood double threat has quietly amassed her share of battle scars in the fight for greater inclusivity and diversity - the topic du jour in fashion and entertainment these days.

Her career may be in ascendance and she may be one half of Tinseltown's newest power couple since marrying singer Nick Jonas, but the 37-year-old reveals she still encounters bias in her professional and personal life.

"It's a factor every day," she says.

Discreetly, she does not elaborate. But, as she sits in her dressing room at our cover shoot in Los Angeles - swathed in a fluffy grey robe and with her chihuahua-mix rescue Diana burrowed in her lap, it is clear she has given this some thought.

Asked if the much-touted moves towards greater diversity and inclusion in the media are more than just a trend, she is impressively pragmatic.

"Look," she says. "Buzzy is good. It's great that people are talking about inclusivity because there's an accountability. When someone doesn't do it, you can say, 'Why aren't you doing it?'

"So, if it is a trend, let's use it in a way in which it actually becomes a reality. Because only when the noise is loud enough is there change."

Chopra says that society still has a very specific idea of what beauty should look like and how it should sustain over the years. PHOTO: HARPERS BAZAAR

The same goes for acceptance of different body shapes and sizes.

"I would like to see the most amazing fashion labels catering to women of all sizes," she says. "There's this thing called 'sample size' and I don't know who that size is for. A woman's body changes, especially because of having kids or just from being in your 30s, and then your 40s and 50s."

She adds that society still has a very specific idea of what beauty should look like and how it should sustain over the years. "And how someone who's 50 should look like a 25-year-old. Those skewed ideologies still exist and I wish the fashion and beauty industries would really be aware of it."

I always end up wearing really large diamonds because my Indian heritage insists on big gemstones. But I'm an amalgamation of the world. I have East and West in me and I can wear a sari with as much elan as I do a gown or a little dress.

ACTRESS PRIYANKA CHOPRA, on how her heritage helped shape her personal style

She concedes: "Of course, there's conversation around it and we see some amazing representation of beautiful women who are full and curvaceous. But again, it's not 'normal' and it's just a pat on the back when someone does it."

The Quantico (2015 to 2018) and Baywatch (2017) actress is doing her bit to nudge industry norms in the right direction.

Last year, she launched the "Skinclusion" campaign with skincare brand Obagi to celebrate different skin tones.

She says: "When I grew up, I didn't see anybody who looked like me on a magazine cover in the United States.

"Now, my kids or my friends' kids or my nieces are going to grow up seeing girls like themselves and the more that happens, the more we normalise a cosmopolitan world that is full of all kinds of people."

The actress is very much lighting the path towards that world.

Since appearing in the terrorism series Quantico and becoming Mrs Nick Jonas, she is, for many in the West, their first real taste of anything South Asian, especially after her widely documented Indian nuptials last December.

"For a lot of people, I'm an introduction to what India is," she says. "It's like, 'Oh, this is what happens at an Indian wedding.'"

She relishes her role as de facto cultural ambassador, though.

"I love cross-pollination and I want to be able to educate people about this incredible culture I grew up in."

"Like, my husband is all about it," she says of the 27-year-old Jonas Brothers star and actor, who has taken to playing Bollywood tunes as his "hype music" before he goes on stage.

Chopra says she still encounters bias in her professional and personal life. PHOTO: HARPERS BAZAAR

This is why she and Jonas are producing an upcoming Amazon reality series in which couples of different faiths and ethnicities "come and, instead of a boring rehearsal dinner, have a sangeet", a lively Indian pre-wedding reception.

"It's important for us to make our children curious and tolerant and to have conversations about including every kind of person, regardless of their geography or physicality or sexuality," says the star, who is in talks to appear with Keanu Reeves in the fourth Matrix film slated for release next year.

An avowed feminist, Chopra Jonas plans to fuse her philanthropic efforts with those of her husband, and continue using her celebrity to promote education and women's rights through her work with the United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund (Unicef) and the Global Citizen poverty-eradication initiative.

She believes that her heritage and peripatetic childhood as the daughter of two army doctors not just gave her a uniquely cosmopolitan world view, but also shaped her personal style.

"I always end up wearing really large diamonds because my Indian heritage insists on big gemstones," she quips. "But I'm an amalgamation of the world. I have East and West in me and I can wear a sari with as much elan as I do a gown or a little dress."

"My heritage has given me the confidence to experiment and wear different things. I'd wear an amazing kurta from Sabyasachi (Mukherjee) with jeans," she says, referring to the Indian fashion and jewellery designer.

When it comes to signature red-carpet looks such as her show-stopping caged Dior gown at the Met Gala last year, she inhabits a slightly different headspace.

"I'm moody. I guess this is the actress in me," she says. "I choose a character I want to be and create scenarios for my stylist, hair and make-up and wardrobe. Then, they present a bunch of things to me, we all have some rose and do a fun fitting and ideate."

For her everyday style, Chopra Jonas prefers to "be comfortable yet put together".

"But at home, I'm a sweats ninja - that's what my husband calls me," she says with a chuckle.

Whatever she puts on, the non-negotiable accessory is confidence. Which, she insists, is something "you're not born with; anyone can learn".

"I was an extremely insecure kid and had low self-esteem till I was 20," she says. "But over time, especially because I started working in the entertainment business at 18, I quickly adapted to knowing this is something I can create."

And the trick to that? "Finding your strengths instead of focusing on your weaknesses," she says.

"Everyone has flaws. I have a million of them and, being a public person, I get told about all of them."

But she has learnt how not to be so hard on herself, work through her insecurities and learn, ultimately, that "you're your own best friend".

"Because the longest relationship you're going to have with anyone is with yourself," she points out.

"And we forget that all the time."

Swimming against the tide: The subtle art of resistance in Macau – Hong Kong Free Press

Filmmaker Lei Cheok mei creates deeply personal movie vignettes of her familys life in Macau. She traces her grandfathers forgotten achievements as an engineer, her aunts battle with depression, and the impact of her mothers job as a casino worker on their relationship.

While there is nothing overtly political about her award-winning work, it nevertheless takes a quiet stand in a city where the space for dissent is shrinking rapidly.

Family is a universal concept and a small unit of society. So, if theres a problem in a family its a reflection of something wider, Lei, 28, told HKFP. She wants her films to encourage audiences to think more about life in the gambling hub and to question how the government could better help residents.

Although people in Macau dont like to talk about political topics, theyre still sensitive and emotionalthats why I want to engage them in this softer way, she explained. I want them to see that the government is not perfect.

Even such an oblique challenge to the status quo in Macau is rare. The semi-autonomous city has prospered since it was handed back to China by Portugal in 1999 and critical voices are few.

The economy was transformed after foreign investors snapped up gaming concessions in the early 2000s, developing mega-casinos and luxury hotels. Unemployment is low and the pro-Beijing government gives annual cash handouts to residents.

Chinas President Xi Jinping has lauded the compliant city as a successful example of one country, two systems. Whereas Beijing has unilaterally imposed a national security law on Hong Kong as a response to anti-government protests there, Macau introduced the legislation on its own in 2009. The vast majority of lawmakers in its partially elected parliament are pro-establishment.

There are historical as well as economic reasons for Macaus political conformity. Long before the official handover of the territory to China, pro-Beijing associations were already largely running the city.

Portugal effectively ceded control to them following an anti-colonial uprising in Macau in 1966. More than half the population was born in mainland China, which has also fostered a sense of integration.

However, discontent is rising among younger generations as authorities crack down on even small-scale digressions from Beijings script and seek to prevent unrest spreading from Hong Kong.

The increased repression reflects the Chinese governments growing intolerance for any trace of opposition or criticism in its territories, even though, as in Hong Kong, Macaus mini-constitution protects rights unseen on the mainland, such as freedom of expression and freedom of the press.

Academics in Macau have spoken in recent years of losing their jobs for expressing their political views. Journalists are also under increasing pressure to toe the government line. Fears over the erosion of liberties ramped up last year when local demonstrations against police brutality in Hong Kong were denied permission in a rare move by the police, who cited security concerns.

Resentment was further stoked last month when officials banned Macaus annual vigil to commemorate victims of the Tiananmen Square massacre for the first time in 30 years, citing coronavirus risks.

Two young women who went to the square where the memorial is usually held on the night of the cancelled event were arrested. They were the daughters of one of Macaus few pro-democracy legislators.

Meanwhile, a bus parade in support of Hong Kongs national security law took place a day later without restrictions, sparking anger over the authorities double standards.

These events have aroused a lot of attention in society here, said filmmaker Lei. People are making more noise than usual.

A new Macau-based Facebook page whose name translates as Freedom of the Pen is one example of that pushback. Set up in early June in response to the banning of the Tiananmen vigil, it is a citizen news platform critical of the way Macau is run. It calls on people to unite to defend Macaus freedoms and has more than 3,100 followers.

Lei and a group of filmmakers have also seen a strong community response to a new Facebook campaign they have launched. They are demanding answers from the government about its decision to hand a popular arts cinemaCinematheque Passionto a new management company. The incoming firm has offered to run the government-funded venue at a lower cost. Campaigners say little is known about the company and fear it will water down the previously eclectic programme of international and local films.

Hundreds have signed the groups Facebook petition and more than 1,600 people have liked its Macau Cinematheque Matters Facebook page.

It may not sound like much, but in Macau thats a lot, said Lei. Macau citizens dont usually take an interest in politics, so it was very surprising that this many people cared they even gave their real names.

These new shoots of resistance are tiny compared with the millions who have taken to the streets in Hong Kong to protest disappearing freedoms. But they are an indicator of simmering frustrations in a city where self-expression is increasingly difficult.

As a documentary maker, Lei believes she has a social responsibility to voice her views, despite having first-hand experience of the risks. Last year she was detained near one of the banned demonstrations in support of Hong Kong and was held by police for hours after they found a Hong Kong protest sticker in her bag. She was eventually released without charge.

Like many artists in Macau, she is in a particularly tough position as she relies on government funding for her work, which hasearnedhigh-profile recognition. Her poignant film Melancholy of the Gods, about her aunts depression, won the jury prize at Macaus international film festival in 2018. Her nextmoviewill look at drug addiction in the city.

However, while she expects the challenges to increase, she remains determined to shed light on what she sees as the reality of life in Macau. Im very worried about the situation, but that doesnt mean I wont express and make noise about things that are an injustice, she said.

There may be no way to confront the government or influence their decisions but as long as we do what we think is right we can affect the people around us, including our next generations.

Other Macau residents unhappy with what is happening in the city are finding different ways to share their discontent and subtly push for change.

Macau businessman Craig, who asked to use a pseudonym, does not voice his opinions on social media for fear of repercussions. Instead he opts to have face-to-face informal political discussions with visitors to the caf that he jointly owns.

Craig, in his 30s, is critical of what he sees as the governments attempt to control the population and fears that systems like mobile phone payments and facial recognition CCTV will be used to track citizens. He acknowledges that the majority of Macau residents disagree with him.

Eighty percent of people think the other 20 percent are destroying the Macau atmosphere and phenomenon. They see Hong Kong people throwing petrol bombs and they dont want people like that here, he explained.

Through conversation and debate he hopes to inform the views of Macau residents who might be politically on the fence, or know little about political issues. Its about communicating and encouraging people to think about their lives. Im not a guy who will influence many people, I just do what I can, he said.

When people come into the caf, I might share my opinions a little bit. Sometimes my opinion isnt right. But I think the only way to improve our knowledge is to share our opinions with each other. If we dont, society and people wont progress, he added.

Such discussions also provide a counterpoint to the limited views represented by Macau media, which are largely uncritical of the government.Concerns over press freedom grew earlier this year when China extended its ban on journalists from three US media organisations to Hong Kong and Macau. Some journalists from Hong Kong have also been denied entry to Macau.

A local newspaper reporter, who requested anonymity, told HKFP that quotes from interviewees citing opinions contrary to the official line from Beijing or the Macau authorities are routinely cut from articles by editors at the publication and that such censorship has worsened. Ive stopped fighting back because they dont listen to me. I just avoid doing political stories now, the reporter said.

But although voicing criticism is hard, residents in even the most sensitive positions have found creative ways to express their dissatisfaction with the authorities.

Government worker Michael, who is in his 30s and asked to use a pseudonym, said that he and a trusted group of work colleagues express their political opinions through a kind of coded joke-telling in the office.

We say the opposite of what we really mean, so we will say how great Beijing is, for example, and how we want to go back to the mainland. But we still have to be really careful about who is listening, he explained.

Michael says Macaus crackdown on dissent and freedom of expression is fanning indignation among his peers, who he describes as angry at the governments pro-Beijing style.

I think older generations are OK if the mainland makes Macau another Chinese city, as long as they are rich. But my generation grew up with the internet, were influenced by Hong Kong, Taiwanese and Japanese culture. We know whats going on in the world, he added.

Michael wants a free future for his family and despite the limitations of his position feels strongly about raising awareness of his concerns however he can, before the city he loves becomes somewhere he no longer wants to live. Some of his friends have already opted to move abroad. As China tightens its grip on Hong Kong, he fears repression in Macau will also worsen.

Even though we still have more freedoms than other cities in mainland China we feel like were losing them, he said. Were losing our Macau identity.

OPINION-Opening windows – Macau Business

This coming week, one of the few doors open to the outside world will close. Im obviously talking about the direct corridor to the Hong Kong International Airport. It will close for an undefined period, a duration no one ventures to guess. There is no way that fact can be shown in a positive light.

It is often said that whenever we close a door, we should strive to open a window, at least. That is not happening here, and that can only increase the gloom from our current predicament. When one should be looking for new doors to open, as a matter of priority, we close one of the few existing ones without any real explanation of why that is or had to be so.

It isnt easy to understand why direct access to the Hong Kong airport cannot be maintained or even expended according to circumstances and needs. We duly celebrated its opening as a sign of an improving situation; the closing can only be lamented.

The remaining doors are very narrow, be it the Zhuhai crossing, or the odd flight out. Months without a single internal Covid-91 case, we live as a city under siege. Meanwhile, the economy keeps sinking to unbelievable lows. The economic, social, and emotional tolls will be very high.

Nobody doubts this economy is particularly sensitive to disturbances in the region because of political instability, health emergencies, and whatnot. In case of a crisis, such as the current one, the immediate consequences in both social and economic levels are clear; and the full longer-term impact, by nature uncertain, can be massive.

All this is well-know. It is a distinctive feature of the economy and has been so for decades. There are no easy or short-term solutions for that, as time has shown again and again. That is the reality; we have to deal with it. Admittedly, most of the answers do not depend on us alone, if at all, in some cases. But in what does, we should be showing our temper.

We can monitor our few and well-defined entry points appropriately. Opening more and broader doors should be our top priority. Pushing hard with our friends across the border is one way to go. Further, wouldnt it be time to use our airport more intently, as a big window to the region and the world?Airlines with loads of craft stuck on the ground might even fly to the rescue.

Residents increasingly aware of the value of world heritage in the city | – Macau Business

Macau residents are more and more aware of the value of world heritage in daily life, as well as the importance of safeguarding it, defended the president of the Cultural Institute (IC).

Mok Ian Ian was speaking at the opening ceremony of two days of activities that mark the 15th anniversary of Macaus historic center being inscribed on the World Heritage List of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

The historic center, with its European-style squares and squares, its Chinese-style temples, its western-style churches and theaters and its mansions with Chinese and Western elements, tells the world the history of Macau, a city which is distinguished by its multicultural origins and characteristics , said the official.

The ICs work seeks, through various activities to raise awareness among the youngest sections of the population, to enhance the sustainable development of this precious and non-reproducible resource and to guarantee the future preservation of Macaus world cultural heritage, which belongs to all humanity, she stressed.

Portuguese folk dances, lion dances and Cantonese opera dominate the celebrations program, which until today (Sunday), also offers games, thematic exhibition, workshops and the sale of cultural and creative products.

The event takes place at Casa do Mandarim and Largo do Lilau, two spaces that are part of the world heritage list and bear witness to the oldest European architectural legacy on Chinese soil today, according to the evaluation of the World Heritage Committee of the historic center of Macau.

Traditional Chinese style building, Casa do Mandarim was built before 1869 and is located right in front of Largo do Lilau, one of the first Portuguese style squares in the city.

The historic center of Macau was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List on July 15, 2005, having been designated as the 31st World Heritage Site in China.

The classification includes several historical buildings constructed by the Portuguese, including the building and Leal Senado square, Holly House of Mercy, the churches of S, So Loureno, Santo Antnio, Santo Agostinho, So Domingos, the Ruins of So Paulo and Company of Jesus square or the fortress of Guia.

Over 40000 haven’t collected their consumer cards – Macau News

The Economic Services Bureau (DSE) said in a statement on Thursday that 614,000 residents have collected their first round of consumption subsidy smartcards, which equates to 93 per cent of those registered.

According to a DSE statement earlier this year, 658,000 residents registered for the government-issued consumption promotion cards known in Cantonese as siufai kat.

Consequently, some 40,000 residents have still not picked up their cards.

In the first tranche of the scheme, residents were provided with MOP 3,000 to spend by 31 July, thus the bureau on Thursday urged all those who have yet to collect their cards to pick them up and use them as soon as possible, as any amount remaining on the card after 31 July would return to the public coffers, the statement said.

According to Thursdays statement, registrants must pick up their smartcards on or before next Friday at one of the following locations during office hours: the Economic Service Bureau in Rua do Doutor Pedro Jos Lobo; the Monetary Authority of Macao (AMCM) branch in Avenida de Sidnio Pais, or the Government Service Centres in Areia Preta and Taipa.

According to a statement earlier this year, the government plans to spend MOP 2.2 billion on the first-phase of the consumption subsidy scheme and MOP 3.6 billion on the second phase of the scheme.

The second phase of the scheme will see residents receiving MOP 5,000.

Residents can only spend up to MOP 300 per day during the first-phase of the consumption subsidy scheme, while the second phase will continue to have a daily maximum amount of spending, but it may change after the government assesses the spending patterns during the first phase, the earlier government statement said.

That statement also noted that those who lose their consumption smartcard will not be issued a new one.

The statement also noted that as the second-phase subsidy of MOP 5,000 will be added to the same card, residents should keep their cards safe to ensure that they dont lose it. Residents who lose their card are required to report the loss to the police, the statement said.

The government has not decided whether or not any resident who did not pick up his or her first round smartcard, will be able to collect the card for the second round.

F1 teams in prison threat over Hungarian lockdown – Macau Business

Formula One drivers and teams have been warned they risk prison sentences and fines if they ignore strict coronavirus lockdown measures to be imposed at next weekends Hungarian Grand Prix.

An announcement by the Hungarian Government, with special focus on people from Britain and non-EU countries, was sent to the teams at the Red Bull Ring on Saturday, according to Autosport.

The report said that those who break the lockdown measures would face imprisonment or a 15,000 Euros fine.

An official communication, sent to the teams, was quoted saying: Attendees of UK or other non-EU or EEA nationality should not leave the venue, or their accommodation, for any reason other than for travel between the two locations and for their pre-arranged arrival and departure to and from Hungary.

The document, a copy of which has been seen by Autosport, added that attendees of UK or other non-EU or EEA nationality may not use public transport and taxis.

Any meals should be taken at either the venue or the accommodation and any free time should be spent within the boundaries of the accommodation.

Failure to adhere to these additional restrictions will be punishable by the Hungarian authorities and may result in imprisonment and/or fines of up to approximately 15,000 Euros.

Seven Formula One teams are based in Britain and the restrictions are expected to apply to most of the 2,000 people expected to be present at the Hungarian race.

It was made clear also that it was recommended that all F1 personnel who travel to Budapest adhere to the Hungarian restrictions.

The warning comes as F1s governing body the FIA are investigating Ferraris Charles Leclerc and Valtteri Bottas of Mercedes for leaving the Formula One bubble at Spielberg this week to return home to Monaco.

Nearly 47,000 residents have participated in tourist itineraries | – Macau Business

Around 47,000 people have participated, to date, in the 15 local tourist routes launched by the Government of Macau to boost the economy, affected by the covid-19, said the director of Tourism Services.

This domestic tourism plan is evaluated at weekly coordination meetings, including the possibility of launching more itineraries, given the high demand, Maria Helena de Senna Fernandes said.

One possibility is to include more points of the citys cultural heritage, but residents usually seek more indoor and family activities, such as workshops, she noted.

However, plans are always undergoing adjustments due to the covid-19 pandemic. There are many uncertainties that lead us to make several adjustments, she added.

Launched on June 15, the domestic tourism plan Vamos Macau (Macao Go) includes 15 itineraries, six community and nine leisure, with residents receiving 560 patacas if they participate in two excursions, the maximum limit defined by the authorities.

The Government has allocated 280 million patacas through the Macau Foundation, to subsidize residents who participate in the itineraries, which include excursions through old parts of the city, nature tourism, shows and gastronomy.

The objective is to help small businesses, affected by the crisis motivated by the covid-19 and which practically paralyzed the engine of the SARs economy, the gaming and tourism industry, due to border restrictions and the absence of tourists.

The quest to find signs of ancient life on Mars – Macau Business

Mars may now be considered a barren, icy desert but did Earths nearest neighbour once harbour life?

It is a question that has preoccupied scientists for centuries and fired up sci-fi imaginings.

Now three space exploration projects are gearing up to launch some of the most ambitious bids yet to find an answer.

Scientists believe that four billion years ago the two planets both had the potential to nurture life but much of Mars intervening history is an enigma.

The new Mars probes from the United States, United Arab Emirates and China will launch this summer.

Their goal is not to find Martian life scientists believe nothing would survive there now but to search for possible traces of past lifeforms.

These vast and costly programmes could prove futile. But astrobiologists say the red planet is still our best hope for finding a record of life on other planets.

Mars is the only planet with concrete chances of finding traces of extraterrestrial life because we know that billions of years ago it was inhabitable, said Jean-Yves Le Gall, president of French space agency CNES in a conference call with journalists this week.

Le Gall is one of the architects of NASAs Mars 2020 exploratory probe, which is scheduled for launch at the end of July when Earth and Mars will be the closest for more than two years.

The more than $2.5 billion project is the latest and most technologically advanced attempt to uncover Mars deep buried secrets.

But it is not alone, as enthusiasm for space exploration has reignited.

Scientific enquiry of the red planet began in earnest in the 17th Century.

In 1609 Italian Galileo Galilei observed Mars with a primitive telescope and in doing so became the first person to use the new technology for astronomical purposes.

Fifty years later Dutch astronomer Christiaan Huygens used a more advanced telescope of his own design to make the first ever topographical drawing of the planet.

Mars compared to the desolate, empty moon has long seemed promising for potential inhabitability by microorganisms, wrote astrophysicist Francis Rocard in his recent essay Latest News from Mars.

But the 20th century presented setbacks.

In the 1960s, as the race to put a man on the moon was accelerating towards its dazzling Giant Leap, Dian Hitchcock and James Lovelock were putting a dampener on hopes of finding life on Mars.

Their research analysed the planets atmosphere looking for a chemical imbalance, gases reacting with each other, which would hint at life.

If there is no reaction, then there is probably no life there, Lovelock told AFP.

And that was the case Mars has an atmosphere that is completely inactive as far as chemistry is concerned.

Their conclusion was confirmed a decade later, when the Viking landers took atmospheric and soil samples that showed the planet was no longer inhabitable.

This discovery was a real tanker for Mars research, Rocard told AFP.

Mars programmes essentially paused for 20 years.

Then in 2000 scientists made a game-changing discovery: they found that water had once flowed over its surface.

This tantalising finding helped rekindle the latent interest in Mars exploration.

Scientists pored over images of gullies, ravines, scouring the Martian surface for evidence of liquid water.

More than 10 years later, in 2011, they definitively found it.

The follow the water, follow the carbon, follow the light strategy has paid off, Rocard said.

Every mission since the discovery of water has brought more and more evidence to light that Mars is not quite as dead as we thought, Michel Viso, an astrobiologist at CNES, told AFP.

The latest US rover to make the journey aptly named Perseverance is scheduled to touch down in February of next year after a six-month journey from launch time.

The probe is perhaps the most highly-awaited yet. Its landing spot, the Jezero Crater, may have once been a wide, 45-kilometre river delta.

Rich in sedimentary rocks, such as clay and carbonates the same types of rocks that hold fossil traces on Earth Jezero could be a treasure trove.

Or perhaps not.

We know that water once flowed, but the question remains: for how long? asked Rocard. We dont even know how long it took for life to appear on Earth.

If the mission can bring these rocks back to Earth they might yield answers to the questions that have long confounded scientists.

But they will have to wait at least 10 years for the analysis to be available.

Viso said the results will likely be a bundle of clues rather than a clear answer.

Scientists are also considering perhaps an even more profound question.

If life never existed on Mars, then why not?

The answer to this could enrich our understanding of how life developed on our own planet, Jorge Vago, the spokesperson of the European Space Agency said.

Due to shifting plate tectonics below the Earths core, it is exceedingly difficult to find any traces of life here before 3.5 billion years ago.

Mars has no tectonic plates and so there is a chance that four-billion-year-old signs of life that one could never find on Earth may be preserved there, Vago said.

And if the latest Mars programmes fail to find signs of ancient Martian life, there are always further frontiers to explore.

Encelade and Europe, two of Saturns and Jupiters moons, respectively are considered promising contenders.

Although reaching them remains more science fiction than reality.

Mixed reaction to beach closures EyeWitness News – EyeWitness News

NASSAU, BAHAMAS Prime Minister Dr Hubert Minnis decision to close beaches on New Providence, Paradise Island and Grand Bahama over the Independence holiday weekend received a flurry of mixed reactions from the public on social media yesterday.

While many were outraged and strongly criticized the decision and the government, others defended the move.

The closure of beaches and parks will take effect Thursday at 10pm, until 5am next Monday, July 13.

As he addressed Parliament, the prime minister underscored the ongoing surge of new infections in the US, particularly Florida, Texas and Arizona.

He said the government was aware of what may have contributed to some of the surge.

Yesterday, Tee Moss, a New Providence resident, said the Bahamian government appeared to be piggybacking off the US policies when the population and case rates in the US and The Bahamas were vastly different.

We have just gotten the beaches back and now you play with us like kids, putting us on time out, he said.

This is a nation of free citizens, not your children.

its time to go jack. I dont know who is voting FNM, but only a dog would be that [expletive].

Due to the rising cases in the US, the fourth of July celebrations were cancelled and some beaches in Florida, California and Texas closed in an effort to discourage large crowds.

Rochelle Sturrup added: So the virus [go] up on the beach on Independence then? You want to talk about surge in numbers in Florida to justify this [expletive], but the surge in numbers didnt matter on July 1 when you reopened for international flights.

Jemeka Wilkinson said it was counterintuitive to open the borders to visitors, particularly Americans who are experiencing surges of cases of COVID in their jurisdiction, if the government wished to mitigate risks.

The resumption of commercial carriers into The Bahamas occurred on July 1.

Beaches reopened on June 29.

Wilkinson said it was absurd the rights of the Bahamian people were being yanked around.

While I get there are some who will break the law, there are many doing the right thing suffering, she said.

However, Beatrice Clarke said Bahamians were ungrateful.

She said those lashing the prime minister do not understand the issues at hand.

Take a look at the United States and what they are going through all because the [masses] wanted to go on the beaches, Clarke said.

Keep yall virus in yall household and stay [your] [expletive] home.

Kenneth Richie agreed.

He said a leader must lead and expressed support for the decision to close the beach as a help toward the public being responsible in our movement.

Bradford Roker-Saunders said the decision was about managing risks.

Our recent behavior suggests that we will not follow social distancing rules, so [expletive] off the beaches. We cannot arrest and fine thousands, so this is the best option.

Others labelled the prime minister an emperor and dictator.

The dictator is now the emperor and The Bahamas is officially a police state, said Joseph Ferguson, adding that there was nothing that could be done about it.

Curtis Reno asserted the decision appeared to be prejudicial.

The beaches are only closed to black Bahamian population who use the regular beaches, he said.

The beaches over Paradise Island the hotels tourists and gated communities will be enjoying our beaches.

This emergency order, lockdowns, are no longer about COVID.

Its about a police state stripping away our rights.

Antoine Wallace said with high summer temperatures, the move was unthinkable.

He opined the rights of Bahamians were being stifled and taken away.

What is the medical justification for this madness, he continued.

Which country opens up its borders in a state of emergency?

My God, it is our countrys Independence.

This nonsense must stop. Stand up Bahamians. Stand up for your rights.

Stacey Smith charged that without a new case in over three weeks, and no COVID-19-related deaths since April, there was no reason to close the beaches.

There have been no few infections in New Providence in 22 days, Grand Bahama in 61 days and Bimini in 51 days.

As of yesterday, the total number of cases remained at 104.

However, only four cases remain active.

Health officials said last month the curve of the virus had been flattened, and while cases could appear in clusters, community spread had been curbed.

Maldives set to reopen its resort islands to international visitors from 15 July – ThePrint

Text Size:A- A+

Singapore: Heres some good news for those frustrated by the lack of travel options in the Covid-19 era: The Maldives isreopening to international visitors on July 15.

And, yes, that includes U.S. citizens.

Thepicturesque chain of almost 1,200 islands in the Indian Ocean has a remote location that lends itself naturally to social distancing, with luxury accommodations focused on private overwater bungalows and much of the activity outdoors as wellall fortunate factors forthe economy of the 400,000-person country thatsheavily dependenton tourism.

International visitors will be allowed only on resort islands and live-aboard boats as of July 15; on Aug. 1,guest houses and hotels on inhabited islands will be allowed to reopen. Of course, that comes with the big caveat that you still have to get thereand then get back.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes that anyone traveling on an airplane is at increased risk of contracting Covid-19 because ofclose contact with others at airports and on flights themselves. The CDC alsoadvises anyonereturning to America from another country to stay home for 14 days, avoid contact with others, and monitor for symptoms such asa fever or cough. Conversely, theres the increasedrisk of bringing the virus abroad, as cases trend upwardin the U.S.

In other words: Visiting is no small affair. Nor is it cheap. Because almost every resort in the Maldives is its own private island, many luxury hotels charge upwards of$1,500 a night. (Spending twice that muchis hardly unheard of.) And thats before seaplane or speed boat transfers, which can run a hundreds of dollars round trip.

Still, the Maldives is trying to make it relatively easy, at least on its end.

Tourists are not required to pay an additional fee, produce a certificate ortest result indicative of negative status for Covid-19 prior to entry into Maldives. For tourists without symptoms, there is no requirement for quarantine either, according to anannouncement fromthe Maldives Marketing & PR Corp.

Any tourist who does show Covid-19 symptoms will have to pay for a test, the statement cautioned, adding that people with visible symptoms or those with a history of contact with a confirmed Covid-19 case are advised not to travel to Maldives.

The Maldiveshas been working toward the reopening for weeks. The impact of the pandemic on the tourism sector has ranked up there with the 2004 tsunami and the global financial crisis.

Those who do venture to the archipelago will have some choice. By the end of the month, more than 40resorts out of a total of about 150 properties are expected to be operational, according to the Maldives Ministry of Tourism.TheFour Seasons Resort Maldives at Landaa Giraavaru andSoneva Fushiare already open, and theOne & Only Reethi Rahwill open on July 24,andMilaidhoo Islandis slated for an Aug. 1 opening,a list from the ministry showed.

Many resorts are waiting a bit longer, thoughand peak season is from around December to March, anyway. Thats when skies are clearest and tropical temperatures fall to more moderate levels.Almost 50 of the resorts on the countrys list are planning to open around Oct. 1.ComoMaalifushisays it willget going again in mid-November.

The islandsresorts and accommodations are taking all recommended precautions, a Maldives spokesperson says, and properties have implemented new cleanliness and hygiene protocols to ensure that guests will be safe.

Some of those protocols fall on the more basic side. TheFour Seasons Resort Maldives at Landaa Giraavaru says ithas an arrival procedurethat involves a temperature screening and questions about recent travel history.

At theAngsanaVelavaru Maldives resort, all public areas and back-of-house areas are sanitized on an hourly basis, and rooms are deep-cleaned and disinfected with virus-specific protocols, the website says. Temperature checks aremandatory at the spa.

Soneva is taking a stricter approach at its two Maldives resorts, Soneva Jani and SonevaFushi. Sanitizing luggage before passengers even arrive, requiring a real-time PCR Covid-19 test upon arrival (it has invested in a Roche Diagnostics Corp. testing machine), and taking temperatures every day are all part of the process now, according tothe companys website. Theresanother Covid-19 test on the fifth day of the stay. Soneva says its hosts, or staff, are tested every five days, and all materials and produce that are comingonto theislands will undergocleaning and sanitation procedures first.

Although this could be considered as being slightly excessive or overcautious, both Soneva Fushi and Soneva Jani are One Island, One Resort; it is our goal to make our private island homes Covid-19 free environments, so that all of our guests can truly relax and engage with our Hosts and fellow travelers and not feel any concern about a risk of infection, the site declares.

If you come up positive, the resorts will still take care of you, with attention from a medical team as you isolate in your villa, and Soneva waiving the daily room rate for the next 14 days. (The value of that stay, in one of Soneva Janis currently-discounted entry-level rooms: $37,723.)

If any guest needs to be hospitalized, the Maldives has built up sufficient hospital and medical capacity to treat Covid-19 effectively, the website says, noting that the hospital on a neighboring island, only 10 minutes away by speedboat, has a new ICU unit with 20 beds. Bloomberg

Live in your choice of Victorian sea forts, from a boutique delight with helipad to a crumbling wreck thats a blank canvas – Country Life

You might get wet on your commute, but on the plus side you'd never get trouble with noisy neighbours at these utterly unique properties.

Theres something irresistible about the idea of owning your own island. Some hanker after dots on the map in mystically-beautiful locations; others see things differently, caring not for beauty and charm but instead looking for independence and an escape from the usual rules of society, as in the case of Sealand.

Without either factor at play, though, islands can still exert a powerful draw. Take the example of the three ports which have come up for sale in the Solent. There is no nature or beauty, and the city of Portsmouth is little more than a stones throw away; yet who can look at the images on this page without wondering in awe what life on the fort (on shore? on board? its hard to say) would be like.

Decommissioned after the war, the forts were sold off in the 1980s. Spitbank Fort was converted into a museum, and later hosted TV programmes and weekend raves.

Spitbank Fort, No Mans Fort and Horse Sand Fort were bought by businessman Mike Clares Clarenco, which has invested an estimated 8m on restoring the properties, which are now for sale either individually, or as a group of two or three through Strutt & Parker.

Selling agent James Mackenzie seeks offers around 4m for Spitbank, a 33,000sq ft boutique retreat on three floors; 4.25m for No Mans Fort, a 99,000sq ft hotel, restaurant and leisure complex on four floors, including a helipad; and 750,000 for Horse Sand Fort, a blank canvas, with 100 chambers and living quarters, plus the original gun carriages.

This type of fort has a long history. In the early 16th century, Henry VIII built an extensive set of coastal defences at either end of the Solent, part of his network of Device Forts that effectively controlled access to east and west.

In the late 1850s, a perceived threat of invasion by France led to the commissioning of a fresh series of forts in the Solent by the Prime Minister, Lord Palmerston. The massive, armour-plated structures took 15 years to build, by which time the French threat had receded and they were no longer required.

During the Second World War, the forts were used to defend the Portsmouth dockyards. Life on site was grim; those serving were deliberately chosen for their inability to swim, to avoid any attempt to escape.

Thats far from the case these days. The mix of quirky boutique hotel with a nautical theme is oddly charming, particularly when you throw in some of the original Victorian details which remain to this day.

Clearly as it stands these properties are business opportunities rather than homes for sale. Yet we see no reason why Spitbank in particular couldnt work as a private home, while the dilapidated Horse Sand Fort can be whatever you dream of. And that, above all, is probably the appeal here.

Strutt and Parker quote 4m for Spitbank, 4.25m for No Mans Fort, and 750,000 for Horse Sand Fort. Follow the links to each for more details and pictures.

City’s Annual Road Rehab to Begin July 13 – SCVNEWS.com

The Citys annual slurry seal and overlay road preservation and rehabilitation program, Road Rehab, is scheduled to begin construction Monday, July 13.

The Road Rehab program consists of slurry seal and overlay treatments on selected roadways throughout Santa Clarita. Slurry seal is a coating treatment designed to preserve and extend the life of the road, while overlay includes the removal and replacement of existing pavement that has extensive damage, where a slurry seal will no longer be adequate.

On Tuesday, June 9, the Santa Clarita City Council approved a contract with Toro Enterprises Inc. for the overlay portion and Pavement Coatings Co. for the slurry seal portion of the Road Rehab program. The overlay portion of this years Road Rehab project will consist of overlay treatments for selected arterial and neighborhood streets throughout the City. Major arterials include Placerita Canyon Road from Sand Canyon Road westerly to the City limit and Rye Canyon Road from Avenue Scott to Newhall Ranch Road. The slurry seal portion of this years Road Rehab project will be performed on neighborhood streets and collector streets citywide.

Road Rehab will continue through the summer months and residents are asked to be aware of construction notification signs on residential and arterial streets, and to follow altered traffic patterns and roadway restrictions carefully. Residents will be provided with multiple notifications prior to the start of construction in their area. All cars that are parked in a temporary No Parking zone during posted construction times will be towed.

The Citys Road Rehab website is located at santa-clarita.com/RoadRehab and features frequently asked questions and tips for residents to ensure resurfacing goes quickly and efficiently. An interactive map and full list of streets identified for Road Rehab in 2020 are available on the website. Residents will be able to navigate the list of streets and see the locations, approximate dates of proposed work and whether slurry seal or overlay will be administered.

Door hangers and handbills will be distributed to homes that will be directly affected throughout the course of the project, including dates and approximate construction hours. Construction will occur Monday through Friday. Work on residential streets will occur during daytime hours to cause the least disruption to residents. Work on arterial streets may occur during daytime hours or overnight to avoid major traffic impacts.

For the latest updates, including last-minute changes in scheduling, please follow the hashtag #SCRoadRehab on Twitter.

The city of Santa Clarita appreciates the communitys cooperation and support and will work hard to minimize inconveniences. Additional instructions and Road Rehab information, including the interactive map, can be found at santa-clarita.com/RoadRehab. For any questions or concerns, residents may contact the project hotline at (661) 290-2291.

Polar adventurer marks 100th birthday, 81 years after his first expedition to Antarctica – The Ledger

Robert Johnson of Jacksonville is believed to be the last living member of any of Adm. Richard Byrds pre-World War II expeditions to Antarctica. At his 100th birthday party, Johnson reminisced about his three trips there.

Robert Johnson, who turned 100 on Tuesday, a hot and sunny Florida day, barely hesitated when asked what hed do if given another chance to go to Antarctica, the land of eternal ice and snow that he first journeyed to as a teenager.

"It would be very tempting, it would," he said. "That place stays in your heart. It really does."

At 19, Johnson was the youngest member of Adm. Richard Byrds 1939 expedition to Antarctica aboard the USS Bear, a 19th-century, thick-hulled wooden ship with sails and diesel.

He went back with Byrd in 1946 for Operation Highjump, then joined another U.S. Navy expedition there, Operation Windmill, in 1948.

The son of a chief warrant officer in San Diego, Johnson was a Sea Scout who trained on sailing ships as a teen.

The summer he turned 16, he was one of the Sea Scouts aboard the Pacific Queen, a 300-foot square-rigger, for what was supposed to be a 15-day cruise. The becalmed ship ended up at sea for 67 days, its crew living on severe rations, creating headlines as a frantic search ensued.

That experience didnt keep him from the sea: He joined the Navy two years later on a battleship and then volunteered for Byrds expedition. With his sailing experience, he was signed on to the Bear, bound for Antarctica.

Hes believed to be the last survivor of any of Byrds pre-World War II polar journeys, which caught the public imagination and made the explorer a much-decorated national hero.

Florida woman celebrates 105th birthday

Johnson, in fact, is most likely the last living member of any prewar polar expedition by any country, said Glenn Stein, a polar and maritime historian from Apopka.

Stein came to Jacksonville for Johnsons 100th birthday party, which was under a tent outside his East Arlington home, attended by pandemic-masked family members and friends.

Five police cars drove by, sirens blipping, and neighbors and friends drove by as well, holding signs of support. The police officers then visited Johnson as he sat in his driveway near some food and displays.

Stein has interviewed Johnson several times and marvels at his still-sharp memory.

"Hes a treasure, an absolute treasure," said Stein, author of "Discovering the North-West Passage: The Four-Year Arctic Odyssey of H.M.S. investigator and the McClure Expedition." "This is a time when things like this just arent done any more, this kind of adventure."

Harvey Morrissey, 16, a Sea Scout from Ocala, also came up for the party. He had done a podcast with Johnson and was struck by his vivid stories of Antarctica and of his teenage sailing journey on the Pacific Queen.

"Thats crazy," he said. "I dont think any Sea Scout today could do that. It's a different world, compared to today, obviously."

Johnson was in the Navy from 1937 to 1956, ending up at Naval Station Mayport as a chief bosuns mate. He then worked for the Postal Service until 1990.

He recalls that on the first expedition, their transport on the ice was sleds and dogs. To feed the dogs, they would shoot a seal and that would be the dogs lunch.

In Operation High Jump, he parachuted to the ice, making a heavy landing in what seemed to him the quietest place on Earth.

Theres a whole room in Robert and Mildred Johnsons house dedicated to his three Antarctic adventures. He calls it the chiefs quarters, and its decorated with photos, awards and memorabilia.

A place of honor is reserved for Polar Penguin Pete, a penguin Johnson took with him after one expedition and then had stuffed. Its been with him ever since, a reminder of his journeys to the bottom of the Earth.

"Thats quite a place," he pronounced, some 72 years after his last trip there. "Its different from anything else, thats for sure. It is a wonderful place down there."
