Jordan Staal: Theres a ton of sacrifices you have to make to win the cup – Canes Country

Hockey is returning around the league for those teams taking part in the Return-to-Play plan. With Phase 3 starting, training camp has kicked off and players are eager to prepare for postseason hockey.

Hurricanes captain Jordan Staal knows what it takes to be successful in the playoffs and he is ready to help push his team over the edge in his first full year as a solo captain.

He spoke with the media over Zoom following Mondays practice. Here is some of the highlights of what he had to say.

On if it feels exciting for hockey to return: Everyone here is excited to get going. Just a lot of energy out there. The boys are excited to see each other again and it was good to see them, but its back on. Were back on the ice and were going to be fighting for a chance for the Cup. Its exciting times and you dont get this opportunity a whole lot.

On if team still has a lot of work to do to get ready: Were going to want to get our level of play to the highest level we can at practice. It isnt easy to do just in practice, so were going to have to push each other and wrap up as best we can to get to a playoff level. Everyone out there is not quite there yet, including myself, and were going to push as best we can.

On if it feels like a new season: Its got kind of the same feel as a new season. Im sure well be going over a lot of system stuff and the video and working on all that stuff throughout the practices. Not a lot of games or exhibition games either, so its going to feel a little bit like a training camp, but still in the back of your mind you know youre going to be stepping into a playoff game very quickly. Its gonna be a little more intense and were going to have to keep the level up the best we can these next two weeks.

On how this training camp feels: The only difference from this and normal training camp is theres no extra players out there. Theres no guys fighting for spots. We already got a team thats all ready to push each other and thats ready to go. We got guys that are hopefully going to step into their roles and hopefully understand that we have to push each other to get some wins together and get a streak going.

I think its a little different in the regard that we have our guys. We have our group ready to go and we just got to step right into it too. Theres no tip-toeing into exhibition games and hoping to have a good start to the season. Were definitely going to have some urgency and were going to have to have that throughout this week. Thats going to be on the players, thats going to be on myself and a lot of the guys in this room that theyre ready to go.

On if the teams playoff experience last year helps: It wont hurt. Experience always helps. Just understanding the importance of every shift and every play. You could feel that throughout the playoffs. Every time you start to realize that little mistakes, if they add up, can end up in the back of your net and I think the guys started to understand that and realize when to take risks when we needed to and when to be smarter with the puck and just understanding how to win games. I think our team learned a lot last year and we got another group that is hungry for another run and hungry for a cup so hopefully its a good recipe for success.

On the sacrifices he has to make in regards to family: Its... unfortunate. Theres a lot of people hurting throughout this whole pandemic and its a sacrifice Ill have to make. A difficult one. Im going to miss my boys first steps and his first birthday and stuff like that and stuff I want to be there for. But opportunities like this dont come often and the guys in that room want it just as much as I do, so Im here to win. Its part of the sacrifices we have to make and theres a ton of other sacrifices that you have to make to win cups and thats just one of them this year.

‘Their fight is our fight’: Latinos in Las Vegas join Blacks in seeking end to own injustices – Las Vegas Sun

Christopher DeVargas

Lue Ortiz, canvas director of Las Vegas-based nonprofit Make the Road Nevada, poses for a portrait Thursday, July 9,2020.

By Ricardo Torres-Cortez (contact)

Monday, July 13, 2020 | 2 a.m.

Lue Ortiz learned at a young age that people looked differently at him because of the dark color of his skin. Just a boy, he was confused as to why some would move out the way when he would approach.

Then came the day his grandmother was detained by police in Orlando, Fla.

Ortiz and his grandmother were walking to a grocery store when a sheriffs deputy stopped them, he said. His grandmother ended up in handcuffs because she wasnt carrying her identification and, because of her complexion.

At school, Ortiz the son of a Puerto Rican mother and a Black father said Black and Hispanic students would have to make appointments to talk to a school adviser, while white students freely walked in for advice.

Ortiz, now a Las Vegas resident, is the canvas director for Make the Road Nevada, a community organizing group that advocates for elevating working-class immigrant communities. The group has been active over the past months in support of Black Lives Matter after the death of George Floyd by white Minnesota police.

When African Americans win when Black people win we all win, Ortiz, 28, said. When we talk about racism, colorism, we shouldnt have to wait (to jump into action). We shouldnt need to understand why.

Throughout the evolution of modern civil rights, Black Americans and Latinos have marched side-by-side. Whether they know it or not, their demands intersect with each other and those of other marginalized communities in Las Vegas and nationally.

Courtesy of OJa Vincent

Oja Vincent is co-founder of the Forced Trajectory Project.

For now, Black Lives Matter has taken the mantle after the recent deaths of Floyd and Breonna Taylor, who was killed by Louisville police, and Ahmaud Arbery, who was chased and killed by a white father and son in Georgia.

Born out of an internet hashtag in 2013 following the killing of Trayvon Martin in Florida, Black Lives Matter is defined as a political and social movement originating among African Americans, emphasizing basic human rights and racial equality for Black people. And although the groups dont exist in a monolith, the Black-and-Latino kinship has also been present in Las Vegas.

Right now, it might not be directly affecting us, Ortiz said of the police-brutality demonstrations. But if we let it affect someone, at some point, it will come to affect us. So this is why we have to pick a stance.

Latino groups advocating against detention and deportation practices by Immigration and Customs Enforcement are similar to Black American groups fighting against police brutality, Ortiz said. All are essentially protesting the systemic discrimination of marginalized communities.

Recently, when he still lived in Florida, Ortiz said police detained the husband of one of his colleagues for jaywalking and he was immediately handed over to immigration officials.

Attorneys jumped on the case, and deportation was ultimately averted. But if youre any form of immigrant, have darker skin color, you are going to face some sort of harassment. Its not a question of if, its a question of when, Ortiz said.

Courtesy of Make the Road Nevada

Ashley Garcia is the deputy political director of Make the Road Nevada.

That's one of the reasons why its common to see Blacks and Hispanics marching side-by-side in Las Vegas.

Were the same species, with the same race and with different ethnicities, said Oja Vincent, a Black Latino with Haitian parents who is a member of Forced Trajectory Project, an independent media outlet that reports on police violence and the impact it has on affected families and communities.

Theres always been a connection. Theres always been a realization of similarities in our communities in terms of Black and Latinx, and theres always been link-ups on different levels that have been super powerful, he continued.

A New York Times poll found that Latino and Black voters participated in recent protests at almost identical numbers, about one out of every five voters questioned.

Everybody from the people with the most privilege, who show up as white folks, to folks with the least privilege, who show up as native folks, or immigrant folks without citizenship status need to stand together, Vincent said. Because these are issues that are very intersectional, theres overlapping pieces in all these issues.

Ashley Garcia, the deputy director of Make the Road Nevada, felt more welcome by Black students at Las Vegas-area magnet schools because they didnt judge her on her subpar Spanish or question her authenticity. Shes the daughter of a Salvadoran man and a Mexican-American mother from Texas. I dont like tortillas, but Im Latina, she joked.

The fight against police brutality in the Black community correlates with ICE in the Latino community, she said.

The criminal justice system is one of the most concrete examples of why their fight is our fight, Garcia said. We will be brought to our full liberation when Black people are seen as full human beings.

Vincent dates the origins of what he describes as a system of oppression to the late 1400s. First, indigenous people were nearly decimated when the American continents and the Caribbean were colonized; then Africans were kept in captivity with slavery when white indentured servants also were exploited and now, in the current capitalist society, the scales have been tipped against people of color, he said.

And the abuses, such as the controversial deadly police shootings, have always occurred, but now people are finally seeing them because of technological advances, he said.

Marginalized groups have similar struggles, with the biggest barrier to collaborating being language and culture, Vincent said. Thats why Forced Trajectory Project doesnt single out the victims they advocate for by race, ethnicity or culture, he said.

The reality is that everybody who loses a family member (to police violence) is feeling the same universal human pain, and they wake up with it every day, and they go to sleep every night and have to deal with all the circumstances in between, including all the court cases (and) bureaucracy, Vincent said.

Nevada records more than 1K new COVID-19 cases for just the 2nd time – Las Vegas Review-Journal

Nevada recorded 1,004 new cases of COVID-19 the second-biggest daily increase announced by the public health officials and eight additional deaths, according to data posted Friday.

The reporting by the state Department of Health and Human Services, posted the new figures on the agencys nvhealthresponse.nv.gov website, pushed total cases for Nevada to 25,908 and raised the death toll from the disease caused by the new coronavirus to 579. (Reports from local health districts and counties place the case total higher, at 25,973 as of late Friday.)

New cases, second only to the 1,159 announced on June 26, were well above the daily average of nearly 739 over the preceding week, while deaths were above the daily average of about 6 for the period.

The state infection rate, considered a better bellwether of the trend of the outbreak in the state than the daily new cases or deaths, climbed for the second straight day and the 22nd day out of the last 23, reaching 7.75 percent.

The rate, the number of confirmed cases divided by the number of people tested, fell over several months before bottoming out at 5.20 percent on June 17. Except for Wednesday, it has risen every day since.

Meanwhile, Clark County recorded 827 new cases of COVID-19 and five additional deaths over the preceding day, according to data from the Southern Nevada Health District.

The new data posted to the districts coronavirus website raised the case total for the county to 21,449, while the additional fatalities pushed the death toll to 473. The county estimates that 14,106 of those sickened by the illness have recovered.

New cases were well above the daily average of nearly 612 over the preceding week, while deaths were slightly below the daily average of just over five for the period.

The health district also reported 37 new hospitalizations for the disease, well above the daily average of just over 21 for the preceding week.

In an update Thursday, the Nevada Hospital Association reported that 81 percent of available hospital beds and 87 percent of intensive care unit beds in Southern Nevada were occupied.

The report said that COVID-19 patients accounted made up about 19 percent of those hospitalized in Nevada, while in the south they account for nearly one-third of ICU bed use.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.

Satoshi Nakamoto Inspiration Gives Advice On Bitcoins Next Move – Forbes

Listening to educator, inventor and scientist Scott Stornetta on May 30th during the presentation curated by the Government Blockchain Association Of UAE provided insight into one of the least understood problems in blockchains. Stornetta was part of the team that created what can be called a proto blockchain. With three out of nine references in the bitcoin paper by Satoshi Nakomoto, Stornetta and co-inventor Stuart Habers ideas have had an outsize influence on the design of bitcoin and of subsequent blockchains.

Stornetta answered a question about what message he will have if he were to ever meet Satoshi. Stornetta said that he would ask him to fully read the second paper. Here Stornetta is referring to a way to upgrade bitcoin or any time-stamping mechanism, if the signature algorithm is in danger of being compromised.

That paper deals with two topics, one of which is familiar to us from bitcoin and other blockchains. The use of Merkle trees as a way of aggregating the commitments and referring to just the root of the tree, which if timestamped and witnessed properly, ensures immutability of all the leaf documents or transactions. This is a way to refer to lots of transactions with just a single number. This is the basis of the concept of block in blockchain.

The papers second topic is how to renew the timestamps of documents if the cryptography behind timestamping using signatures is in danger of being broken. The simple prescription is to renew the timestamp, referring to the document (the hash) and the old signature in the new one.

Stornetta and Habers concerns were to preserving immutable and unrepudiatable references to digital documents with the time they are entered into a registry. That is not about value exchange and control of assets, like most other blockchains. They also make the observation that the timestamp, if fixed in a chain at a time known to be before the break, can be assumed to be correct.

Two baby elephants, symbols of renewal, walk among a herd at the Minneriya National Park in ... [+] Minneriya on July 8, 2020.

Many of the cryptographic structures behind any blockchain network are relatively safe from quantum computing as they are based on hash functions which are quantum resistant. For bitcoin and for other blockchains, this means that, Merkle trees and the structure of the chain itself are quite safe as most of this is based on hashes.

The vulnerability of digital signatures to Shors algorithm using quantum cryptanalysis is a Damocles sword that hangs over any blockchain that is meant to last for ever. Although, it is improbable that quantum computing will be able to break the signature algorithm in the short term there is a possibility that it will in the long run. For decentralized value exchanges whose longevity should be measured in hundreds of years, this consideration is crucial.

The more quantum vulnerable parts are signatures, as value transfer is based on signatures, the unspent transactions are vulnerable. If quantum computing progresses to a point where the signature algorithm is in imminent jeopardy, the signature algorithm needs to be updated to a quantum resistant one. Moreover, all owners of unspent transactions need to transfer values to the new scheme. This action also needs to be done before the signature scheme is broken. Further, it will need actions from all owners of value to safeguard their assets. This also applies to other forms of asset ownership assertion using asymmetric or public key cryptography. Some of these considerations can be seen in the plans for Ethereum Serenity upgrades.

Once quantum computing for factorization becomes a reality, all stranded assets; for which private keys are lost due to negligence or their owners death will start moving again, into the control of people with enough quantum resources.

Facilities for upgrading systems should be part of the initial architecture of any long-lived system. There are many throw-away systems that long outlive the initial horizon, so any system has to be created as if it is going to live a long time.

There Are Over 13K Bitcoin Addresses Worth $1M – Cointelegraph

There are over 13,000 Bitcoin (BTC) addresses that are worth at least $1 million, according to data from Glassnode.

At the current prices, it takes about 107 BTC for an address to become a dollar millionaire. Since this metric is tied to the dollar price of Bitcoin, it tends to fluctuate a lot. For comparison, the number of addresses that contain at least 100 BTC has a much lower volatility.

Bitcoin addresses that hold 100 BTC v. addresses that hold $1M worth of BTC. Source: Glassnode.

We can observe that the number of addresses with balances of over $1 million hit a record high during the 2017 bull run, while the other metric remained largely unaffected by it. This remains one of the few indicators in the Bitcoin world with a very low variance through the years.

Another possible reason is that some of these addresses are controlled by large entities like exchanges and custodians, who do not like to stray from a predetermined distribution of their Bitcoin. It should also be noted that there are over 1 million of Bitcoin which were likely mined by Bitcoin creator, Satoshi Nakamoto. These coins have not moved in over 10 years.

So how many Bitcoin millionaires are there? The reality is that we do not know. In order for us to answer this question, we would have to know how many individuals or entities control those 13,290 addresses. This number could theoretically lie anywhere between 1 and 13,290.

Although it is possible to apply data analysis heuristics to Bitcoin addresses and transactions to narrow down this number somewhat, no such complete data set is currently available.

FT819 CAR T-cell Product Candidate Derived from Clonal Master iPSC Line with Novel CD19-specific 1XX CAR Integrated into TRAC Locus

Phase 1 Clinical Study will Evaluate FT819 for Patients with Advanced B-cell Leukemias and Lymphomas

SAN DIEGO, CA, USA I July 09, 2020 I Fate Therapeutics, Inc. (NASDAQ: FATE), a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company dedicated to the development of programmed cellular immunotherapies for cancer and immune disorders, announced today that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has cleared the Companys Investigational New Drug (IND) application for FT819, an off-the-shelf allogeneic chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T-cell therapy targeting CD19+ malignancies. FT819 is the first-ever CAR T-cell therapy derived from a clonal master induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC) line, and is engineered with several first-of-kind features designed to improve the safety and efficacy of CAR T-cell therapy. The Company plans to initiateclinical investigation of FT819for the treatment of patients with relapsed / refractory B-cell malignancies, including chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), and non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL).

The clearance of our IND application for FT819 is a ground-breaking milestone in the field of cell-based cancer immunotherapy. Our unique ability to produce CAR T cells from a clonal master engineered iPSC line creates a pathway for more patients to gain timely access to therapies with curative potential, said Scott Wolchko, President and Chief Executive Officer of Fate Therapeutics. Four years ago, we first set out under our partnership with Memorial Sloan Kettering led by Dr. Michel Sadelain to improve on the revolutionary success of patient-derived CAR T-cell therapy and bring an off-the-shelf paradigm to patients, and we are very excited to advance FT819 into clinical development.

FT819 was designed to specifically address several limitations associated with the current generation of patient- and donor-derived CAR T-cell therapies. Under a collaboration with Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSK) led by Michel Sadelain, M.D., Ph.D., Director, Center for Cell Engineering, and Head, Gene Expression and Gene Transfer Laboratory at MSK, the Company incorporated several first-of-kind features into FT819 including:

The multi-center Phase 1 clinical trial of FT819 is designed to determine the maximum tolerated dose of FT819 and assess its safety and clinical activity in up to 297 adult patients across three types of B-cell malignancies (CLL, ALL, and NHL). Each indication will enroll independently and evaluate three dose-escalating treatment regimens: Regimen A as a single dose of FT819; Regimen B as a single dose of FT819 with IL-2 cytokine support; and Regimen C as three fractionated doses of FT819. For each indication and regimen, dose-expansion cohorts of up to 15 patients may be enrolled to further evaluate the clinical activity of FT819.

At the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) Virtual 2020 Meeting, the Company presented preclinical data demonstrating FT819 is comprised of CD8 T cells with uniform 1XX CAR expression and complete elimination of endogenous TCR expression. Additionally, data from functional assessments showed FT819 has antigen-specific cytolytic activity in vitro against CD19-expressing leukemia and lymphoma cell lines that is comparable to that of healthy donor-derived CAR T cells, and persists and maintains tumor clearance in the bone marrow in an in vivo disseminated xenograft model of lymphoblastic leukemia.

Fate Therapeutics has an exclusive license for all human therapeutic use to U.S. Patent No. 10,370,452 pursuant to its license agreement with MSK1, which patent covers compositions and uses of effector T cells expressing a CAR, where such T cells are derived from a pluripotent stem cell including an iPSC. In addition to the patent rights licensed from MSK, the Company owns an extensive intellectual property portfolio that broadly covers compositions and methods for the genome editing of iPSCs using CRISPR and other nucleases, including the use of CRISPR to insert a CAR in the TRAC locus for endogenous transcriptional control.

About Fate Therapeutics iPSC Product PlatformThe Companys proprietary induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC) product platform enables mass production of off-the-shelf, engineered, homogeneous cell products that can be administered with multiple doses to deliver more effective pharmacologic activity, including in combination with cycles of other cancer treatments. Human iPSCs possess the unique dual properties of unlimited self-renewal and differentiation potential into all cell types of the body. The Companys first-of-kind approach involves engineering human iPSCs in a one-time genetic modification event and selecting a single engineered iPSC for maintenance as a clonal master iPSC line. Analogous to master cell lines used to manufacture biopharmaceutical drug products such as monoclonal antibodies, clonal master iPSC lines are a renewable source for manufacturing cell therapy products which are well-defined and uniform in composition, can be mass produced at significant scale in a cost-effective manner, and can be delivered off-the-shelf for patient treatment. As a result, the Companys platform is uniquely capable of overcoming numerous limitations associated with the production of cell therapies using patient- or donor-sourced cells, which is logistically complex and expensive and is subject to batch-to-batch and cell-to-cell variability that can affect clinical safety and efficacy. Fate Therapeutics iPSC product platform is supported by an intellectual property portfolio of over 300 issued patents and 150 pending patent applications.

About Fate Therapeutics, Inc.Fate Therapeutics is a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company dedicated to the development of first-in-class cellular immunotherapies for cancer and immune disorders. HPE To Acquire Silver Peak For $925M To Boost SD-WAN, Aruba – CRN: Technology news for channel partners and solution providers

Hewlett Packard Enterprises networking business is getting a serious shot in the arm with the unveiling of the companys plan on Monday to acquire software-defined WAN standout Silver Peak for approximately $925 million in cash.

HPE was an early mover in identifying the opportunity at the edge and that trend is accelerating in a post-COVID world, said HPE president and CEO Antonio Neri, in a statement. With this acquisition we are accelerating our edge-to-cloud strategy to provide a true distributed cloud model and cloud experience for all apps and data wherever they live. Silver Peaks innovative team and technology bring critical capabilities that will help our customers modernize and transform their networks to securely connect any edge to any cloud.

HPE will combine Silver Peaks SD-WAN technology with Aruba, HPEs networking subsidiary, who was recently named a visionary in Gartners Magic Quadrant For Data Center And Cloud Networking.

[Related: Antonio Neri Is Doing Well, Has Not Had COVID-19 Symptoms For 10 Days]

Silver Peak, who received a five-star rating in CRNs 2020 Partner Program Guide, has been a longtime player in the SD-WAN space who has more than 1,500 SD-WAN customers in production worldwide. The Santa Clara, Calif.-based companys SD-WAN will boost Arubas Edge Service Platform by tying together Silver Peak SD-WAN with Arubas SD-Branch solutions in a move to help customers simplify branch office and WAN deployments to empower remote workers and enable cloud-connected distributed enterprises.

Todays announcement comes at a unique moment for our customers, who are grappling with business recovery in the wake of the pandemic, said Keerti Melkote, president of Intelligent Edge for Hewlett Packard Enterprise and founder of Aruba Networks. The need for edge-to-cloud architectures has never been more relevant as enterprises look to extend connectivity to branch locations and enable secure work-from-home experiences. Silver Peaks technology transforms legacy WAN architectures to self-driving WANs, which is a perfect fit with Arubas cloud-native, AI-driven Edge Services Platform. Together, we will be able to meet these needs with critical connectivity, security, and AI capabilities to drive the next generation of Edge-to-Cloud transformation.

In a recent interview with CRN, Arubas Melkote said the network edge and the data found at the edge is where the most powerful opportunities lie for businesses and channel partners. Data isnt confined to the data rooms like it was during the mainframe era or on our computers, and the new normal is going to be even more pervasive than that. [Data] is getting into all the places we live, work and play. We call this the edge, he told CRN. Its an exciting place.

The SD-WAN market is expected to grow from $2.3 billion in 2020 to nearly $5 billion in 2024, representing an compound annual growth rate of 20 percent, according to 650 Group.

Silver Peak helps enterprises and service providers migrate to secure enterprise-grade SD-WAN connectivity, while dramatically improving application performance and lowering connectivity costs, according to Silver Peak. Powered by Silver Peaks SD-WAN edge platform, customers can achieve dedicated WAN-like performance while running all cloud applications and services via broadband access.

Founded in 2004, Silver Peak said it enables freedom of choice to leverage best-in-class technologies from a broad range of ecosystem partners, particularly those focused on security.

David Hughes, founder and CEO of Silver Peak said bringing together Silver Peaks advanced SD-WAN solutions with Arubas networking portfolio provides an unprecedented opportunity to deliver business-driven solutions to customers.

The Silver Peak and Aruba teams share a common vision and goal to provide simplicity, scalability, and application-awareness at the edge, said Hughes in a statement. With Arubas extensive go-to-market, we will further accelerate our ability to drive faster adoption of these transformational technologies.

HPE expects to close on the Silver Peak deal in the fourth quarter of its fiscal year 2020.

How to watch for spectacular Comet Neowise before it disappears for 6,800 years – USA TODAY

It will be hard to miss the amazing sight of a new comet streaking overhead. USA TODAY

Skywatchers are in for a treat over the next few weeksas newly discovered Comet Neowise is paying a visit to the inner solar system for the first time in 6,800 years.

The comet has been getting brighter and brighter in the early morning sky, AccuWeather said, and in the coming days, it will make an appearance in the evening after sunset.

"The early reviews are in," Space.com said. "Comet Neowise is a hit."

Neowise is one of the few comets visible to the unaided eye this century, an inner-solar system "intruder" that might become known as the Great Comet of 2020, NASA said.

Although it's visible with the naked eye, asimple telescope or pair of binoculars can reveal more details, especially when it is seen before twilight in the morning or after twilight in the evening, AccuWeather said.

Far out: First planetary core discovered, astronomers announce

The comet survived its recent closest approach to the sun, and is now headed back toward the outer solar system.Measuring about 3 miles across, Neowise is considered a fairly large comet providing skywatchers with a spectacular view from Earth, CBS News reports.

It's actually the brightest comet in 23 years, since Comet Hale-Bopp in 1997, according to NASA. Soon it will be seen in the northwestern sky after sunset, and it will appear tozoom just below the Big Dipper.

To see the comet, start looking about onehour after sunset, when youll find it just over the northwest horizon as the last of twilight fades into darkness, according to Sky & Telescope. Look about three fists below the bowl of the Big Dipper, which is hanging by its handle high above, and perhaps a little to the right, the website said.

The best daysto view the comet during the evening will come during the July 14-19 time frame, Space.com said.

The brightest comet in decades is coming to night skies near you(Photo: nasa)

"Comets are notoriously unpredictable, so it's impossible to know if this one will remain so easy to spot, but if it does, it should become easier for more people to observe as July goes on," NASA said.

What killed the dinosaurs?: Study finds asteroid impact, not volcanoes, made the Earth uninhabitable for dinosaurs: 'Only plausible explanation'

At 64million miles, the comet will be closest to Earth on July 22, NASA reported.

A NASA spacetelescope known as NEOWISEfirst spotted the icy rock, officially called C/2020 F3,on March 27.

The comet will be visible to skywatchers here on Earth through mid-August.

"From its infrared signature, we can tell that it is about 3 miles across, and by combining the infrared data with visible-light images, we can tell that the comet's nucleus is covered with sooty, dark particles left over from its formation near the birth of our solar system 4.6 billion years ago," said Joseph Masiero, NEOWISE deputy principal investigator at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, in a statement.

Be sure to take a look at the celestial visitor over the next few weeks, if you get the chance:It won't be back in our neighborhood for thousands of years, as it takes some 6,800 years to complete its journeyaround the sun, NASA said.

Amendment To The Cayman Islands Private Funds Law – Finance and Banking – Cayman Islands – Mondaq News Alerts

To print this article, all you need is to be registered or login on Mondaq.com.

The seriousness with which the Cayman Islands continues to meetand exceed international standards in a proactive and sophisticatedmanner has been underlined this week. The introduction ofamendments to the Private Funds Law to further clarify the scope ofapplication to certain entities were passed on 7 July.

On 7 February the Cayman Islands Government published thePrivate Funds Law, 2020 and the Mutual Funds (Amendment) Law, 2020in order to enhance the oversight of both open-ended andclosed-ended funds in the jurisdiction and to respond to EUrequirements with respect to transparency, best market practice, enhanced anti-money laundering procedures and other key regulatorystandards (please refer to our previous update here). Further fast tracked amendments, toprovide greater certainty and clarity, have been introduced in thePrivate Funds (Amendment) Law, 2020.

In summary, the Private Funds Law applies to companies, unittrusts or partnerships that offer or issue or have issuedinvestment interests, the purpose or effect of which is the poolingof investor funds with the aim of enabling investors to receiveprofits or gains from such entity's acquisition, holding, management or disposal of investments, where (a) the holders ofinvestment interests do not have day-to-day control over theacquisition, holding, management or disposal of the investments;and (b) the investments are managed as a whole by or on behalf ofthe operator of the private fund, directly or indirectly. Privatefunds do not include, however, single investor funds; regulatedmutual funds under the Mutual Funds Law (as amended); personslicensed under the Banks and Trust Companies Law or the InsuranceLaw; persons registered under the Building Societies Law or theFriendly Societies Law; or, importantly, any non-fund arrangements the list of which is extensive and includes:

pension funds; securitisation special purpose vehicles;contracts of insurance; joint ventures; proprietary vehicles;officer, manager or employee incentive, participation orcompensation schemes, and programmes or schemes to similar effect;holding vehicles; individual investment management arrangements;debt issues and debt issuing vehicles; structured finance vehicles;preferred equity financing vehicles; a fund of whose investmentinterests are listed on a specified stock exchange; sovereignwealth funds; or single family offices.

The main changes introduced by the Private Funds (Amendment)Law, amend the definition of a private fund by removing thereference to spreading investment risk meaning closed ended fundsmaking only a single investment may constitute a private fund, provided they satisfy all of the remaining requirements of thedefinition. Further, the inclusion of funds that have issuedinvestment interests at some point during their life, removes theuncertainty around funds that have issued interests in the past butare no longer actively offering or issuing. All are required toregister.

Existing private funds and private funds formed after 7 Februarymust register with CIMA no later than 7 August 2020. Registrationsare being conducted apace as the industry successfully absorbsthese new requirements.

As previously observed, the new regime seeks to strike a balancein achieving the dual purpose of strengthening investor confidencein Cayman Islands investment funds and ensuring that the CaymanIslands remains the preeminent jurisdiction for investment fundformation. The new regime also addresses EU suggestions forinvestment fund oversight and the Cayman Islands Government workedclosely with industry stakeholders and fund professionals, including accounting, audit, administration, governance and legalfirms in drafting the laws.

The Maldives Is Reopening This Month to Cure Your Lockdown Malaise – Robb Report

For the past four months, overseas travel has felt like a far-off fantasy thanks to a certain global pandemic. But, finally, theres light at the end of the quarantine tunnelat least for one of our favorite travel destinations. The Maldives is reopening in a few days.

The tropical island nation, which comprises nearly 1,200 islands in the Indian Ocean, is secluded by nature and well-suited to social distancing. To date, there are roughly 150 eye-catching resorts scattered across the archipelago, most of which occupy entire private islands and call for a minimal amount of human interaction.

Since the remote destination relies heavily on tourism, its eager to get back into the swing of things. As of July 15, international travelers, including US citizens, will be allowed to stay only on resort islands or boats (just in case you have a superyacht handy). Come August 1, guest houses and hotels on inhabited islands will also be allowed to reopen.

Four Seasons Resort Maldives at Landaa Giraavaru.Four Seasons

So, where exactly can you stay? By the end of July, the Maldives Ministry of Tourism expects that a total of 40 resorts will be up and running. According to a list from the ministry, the Four Seasons Resort Maldives at Landaa Giraavaru and Soneva Fushi are already welcoming guests, while the One & Only Reethi Rah and Milaidhoo Island while open July 24 and August 1, respectively. Roughly 50 of the remaining resorts plan to open around October 1, while the rest will likely wait until peak seasonDecember to Marchwhen the tropical weather is at its best.

The Maldives has been working toward reopening for weeks and has implemented all recommended cleanliness and hygiene protocols to ensure guests stay safe. The country has also made a concerted effort to build out resources to treat Covid-19, according to Bloomberg.

Soneva Fushi.Soneva Fushi

Entering the Maldives seems to be relatively straightforward, too. Tourists are not required to pay any additional fees or prove theyre virus-free prior to entry, according to an announcement from the Maldives Marketing & PR Corporation. And guests without Covid-19 symptoms will not be subject to quarantine measures on arrival. However, any guest who shows symptoms will have to pay for a test. As you might expect, those who may have been exposed to the virus are advised not to travel to the Maldives.

Of course, youll need to be cautious while traveling to and from the country. And, upon return, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends any international travelers self-quarantine for 14 days.

In short, this trip will require some planning. But after months stuck at home, itll be so worth it.

BVI travel feature: Islands in the storm – Spear’s WMS

David Dawkins finds the British Virgin Islands are bouncing back with a vengeance after Hurricane Irma

In summer 2017 the British Virgin Islands were perhaps at their lowest point. Hurricane Irma had hit harder than expected, killing four people and doing $3.6 billion-worth of damage more than three times the territorys GDP. And locals knew it was coming.

Michael, 24, a driver at one of the new luxury residences on Virgin Gorda island, recalls the pressure of the storm smashing his house, squeezing his brain the roof not peeled but plucked from the four walls, shooting up and out to sea. I ask what it felt like to open the front door of his roofless home the morning after the night before. But hes reluctant to dwell on the negatives. It was chaos, he says cheerily, but everyone knew how to get it done.

Now the territory is well on its way to a full recovery. Some of the rot has blasted away, and the bars, businesses and people are back with a bang.

To really appreciate the British Virgin Islands, you must have a boat. The islands are tiny, but you must see them all, and a day or so at each is plenty. We took a four-double-bed catamaran from the Moorings, with a curmudgeonly captain who slowly warmed up. He was a great help, assuming the role of a guide, and even swam off to get a fresh snapper and vegetables for a BBQ dinner when we wanted to stay in and watch the sunset.

The journey starts from the Moorings Tortola base and heads out to dock at Jost Van Dyke. We cook in the sun as the boat motors past a few roofless homes and tree-less hillsides and long-beaked birds dive-bomb the shallow water. We lunch at Soggy Dollar, an outdoor bar that claims to be the inventor of the Painkiller a coconut and rum cocktail with hair-of-the-dog-like properties.

But the day belongs to Foxy, the owner of a bar at the other end of the waterfront, who we meet sitting in a hammock, singing rude songs about Prince Philip and drinking a Guinness. Foxy is the life and soul of the island. Hell often play the village idiot, but deep down hes a genuine entrepreneur and businessman, who works hard and wants to see more jobs and better jobs for the next generation. And Richard Branson knows Foxys value. Before we head off for the night, Foxy shows us a video of himself singing one of his rude songs to the billionaire on his nearby private island. I like Sir Richard, he says. Maybe well do business.

We come back to Foxys that night for more Guinness and dancing with rowdy American boating crews enthusiastically telling us all about the massive fish they didnt catch, and the turtle that bit their precocious childs midriff.

Storm or no storm, the BVI are nicely put together. The roads work, and most of the colonial-style architecture stood up to the storm. But some locals arent keen on Americans coming over and telling them there was nothing here until they arrived, such as the property developer who, at lunch, describes homes as being made of two-by-fours and sheet steel. Its funny how a bad attitude can be so much more demoralising than bad weather.

After a day in the blazing sun, I awake the same colour as my lobster dinner, and we power across to eat more lobster and visit the Cooper Island Beach Club Brewing Company, which is solar-powered. Doing our bit for the environment, we taste all the beers, hit the rum bar and crash like never before. Too much sun? one of the locals asks as I board the boat, struggling for balance. Beer brewed by solar power so in a way, yes.

Having been rudely awoken by a cockerel, we head out to the Baths, a national park that offers a great day out, if not for health and safety enthusiasts. The huge volcanic beach boulders are diving boards, snorkelling pools and cave dens for the curious.

Back on the boat, we drop the sail for the first time en route to Guana Island. Its so peaceful that even flamingos visit. The seven white powder-sand beaches and 850 acres of tropical forest, mountains, hills and valleys make the experience more like living in your own intimate nature reserve. We swim and scuba off the shoreline, and a half-hour kayak takes us to Monkey Island for our own private island experience, coming back to feed two enormous tortoises before a beacon-light dinner on the roof.

Theres a peacefulness here. But beneath the calm, the BVI are fighting to win back what bad weather and bad luck took from them. Its the people, not just the place, that binds the islands together, and the community remains determined to come back better than ever. Mother nature may have broken their hotels and homes, but it didnt break their spirit.
