Future of hospitality in a world changed by COVID-19 – Moneycontrol

Rajiv Gupta

The COVID-19 global pandemic and ensuing lockdown has severely impacted the hospitality sector. In 2019, the tourism industry contributed around 9 percent of Indias GDP and generated 87.5 million jobs which is about 12.75 percent of total employment of 2018-19, according to the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC).

The global economy is going through the deepest recession in decades.

WTTC estimates revenue losses of up to USD 2.7 trillion with 100 million jobs at risk globally. In India, the next one year is going to be the most difficult for the travel and tourism industry with estimated revenue and job losses at $17 billion and 40 million (both direct and indirect) respectively.

Indias hospitality sector is facing its biggest crisis ever. Revenue per available room (RevPAR), one of the key performance indicators for the hospitality industry, has seen a drop of 18.5% in Q1 2020 over the same period last year.

May 2020 experienced an occupancy decline of 77% over the same time last year. As per estimates, occupancy for branded hotels in 2020 is set to decline by about 20% over 2019 and average daily rate (ADR) by more than 8%.

The combined impact of occupancy and ADR would reflect on RevPAR which is expected to decline by more than 30% over 2019. The other segments of revenue for hotels like food and beverages, banquets, spas would also see a significant decline over 2019.

Steep decline in total revenue added up with fixed operating expenses and debt servicing have added to the woes of the hospitality sector. The magnitude of the impact is far reaching and devastating with layoffs job losses and pay cuts becoming a new normal.

The coming months would also witness mounting credit distress for several hospitality companies resulting in a possibility of bankruptcy. The outstanding loans attached to hotel real estate are estimated at Rs. 50,000 crores, according to Hotelivate.

Weak business outlook and high fixed operating costs pose a serious challenge for servicing of loans. Defaults and loans turning bad is to be expected.

Covid-19 Unlock 1 allowed opening up of hotels outside the containment zones from June 8 with strict safety guidelines and standard operating procedures (SOPs) which was a relief after 75 days of lockdown. However, in this era, hospitality sector version 2.0 is going to be very different with the new normal being social distancing, minimal physical contact, wearing of masks, face cover and PPE kit and high level of hand hygiene.

International tourism and business travel would be a thing of the past till the time coronavirus is eradicated globally. Hospitality industry would have a high dependency on the domestic market and need to win customers confidence and assurance with hotels safety and hygiene standards.

Hotels need to make higher usage of technology to enable contactless servicing of customers. Contactless check-in like mobile app-based self-check-in and check-out is set to become a norm. At restaurants, a digital menu based on a QR code will be acceptable. Takeaways and home deliveries will be the way for survival of the food & beverage business. Innovation and digitalisation will be imperative for businesses to function.

Reduced operational capacity and increased operating costs due to heightened safety and hygiene standards are some of the challenges forthcoming for hotels reopening post lockdown. For example, in Maharashtra hotels are allowed to operate at 33% capacity subject to adherence of social distancing and hygiene guidelines.

The hospitality sector is restarting with a very advanced level of hygiene standards, infectious disease prevention programmes and care. All this would (perhaps) reassure the guests about their safety and well-being.

Companies would be required to do write downs in business during the current fiscal. Impairment provisions need to be created which would reduce profits drastically.

Hotel owners should get some relief on debt servicing due to moratorium extended till August 31 and relaxation in the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (IBC) provisions. RBI is expected to come out with relief measures including loan restructuring for stressed sectors like tourism and hospitality to ease down the lockdown pain.

Besides hotels would get opportunity for restructuring of operating costs. For example, reduction in consumption of heat, light, power and control of food wastages would be the norm. Sensible usage of technology for reduction of overhead expenses and rationalizing of payroll costs too would be expected.

Postponing non-essential IT and capex expenses would have a positive impact on cash flow. Cash reserves, deferred payment plans for creditors and spending need to be cautiously monitored to avoid fresh working capital infusion.

The hospitality sector will need to adapt new strategies for a strong comeback because the road ahead looks bumpy with restricted demand for all revenue segments.

Hotels should also continue to serve as Covid-19 quarantine facilities as this would be a steady new revenue segment. It may take 12-24 months for the hospitality sector to return to 2019 RevPAR levels. At this crucial juncture one cannot ignore the importance of critical success factors activities that a business must do to survive to fight another day.

PlayChange Arrives in Bavaria to Tackle Gambling Addiction – GamblingNews.com

In a bid to begin reducing the numbers of problem gamblers in Bavaria, the state is launching a new help line app, PlayChange, to tackle the issue.

The Bavarian State Office for Gambling Addiction will launch a new platform dedicated to reducing gambling harm in the state. PlayChange will offer support to individuals who may be at-risk or already experience gambling addiction and are coping with gambling-related harm.

The platform has been set up with the Ministry of Health and Social Care with the help of the State Office for Gambling Addiction (LSG), and the solution is scheduled to go live on July 15. According to Health Minister Melanie Huml, PlayChange will allow people who are affected by gambling addiction to seek counseling services and help without fear of reprimand or stigma. Here is Ms. Humls statement cited by iGaming Business:

Those affected can get help quickly, easily, and above all, anonymously on PlayChange. This is an excellent addition to our existing counselling services and a big step forward in addiction counselling, which we offer to citizens in the Free State of Bavaria.

The service will have a non-invasive registration process, allowing citizens to register and set up a counselor visit anonymously via email. Vulnerable and addicted players will be able to have telephone appointments and generally have an easier time finding help to battle with an issue that Ms Huml and the Ministry of Health find serious. All services will be offered remotely.

Ms. Huml cited the novel coronavirus pandemic and argued that the remote mode of operating the help line was a good way to begin offering vulnerable people and addicts a way out of their issue without breaking social distancing rules or endangering the health of either party.

PlayChange will run under the control of LSG and will operate a budget estimated at $40,000 annually. PlayChange is a standalone app that can be downloaded for a mobile or desktop device, making access to the solution easier.

The introduction of PlayChange is an attempt to stem the tide of the growing number of gambling addicts in the State of Bavaria. Estimated 70,000 people have shown signs of problematic gambling behavior according to various surveys conducted between 2011 and 2017.

Some 33,000 of the people observed are qualified as problematic in the surveys, as they already show signs of gambling addiction. While the LSG has been around since 2008, this is one of the most significant moves to scale up the coverage and help reach out to problem gamblers who may be too embarrassed to attend in person.

Already, the institution provides treatment at 70 points across the state and in 22 specialist centers. The Ministry of Health has also been pleased with LSGs work, vowing 8.7 million for the period between 2020 and 2023.

Meanwhile, Germany continues to report an increase in the overall gambling revenue, with the amount total expected to reach 3.3 billion by the end of 2024, as previously reported.

GOLFICITY BETS: The 2020 Memorial Tournament Gambling Guide – Golficity

Memorial Tournament Tournament Preview

If the conclusion of the Workday Charity Open at Muirfield Village was a mere aperitif for what is to come at this weeks Memorial Tournament, we should be in for a mouth-watering event indeed!

Collin Morikawa served up another glimpse at his outrageous talent, and when he learns how to putt properly he will find himself among the sports elite.

Embed from Getty Images

Mind you, there were some outrageous putts landed towards the business end of the Workday, and none more so on the first play-off hole against Thomas the latter drained a 50-footer to put the pressure on Morikawa, who responded with a 24-footer of his own.

In the end, it was Morikawa who held his nerve to clinch a second of what is likely to be many PGA Tour titles to come.

We got a good look at Muirfield Village last week, and all of the rumors suggest that event organizers want to beef up the challenge somewhat this time around.

So were anticipating some changes, such as thicker, tangly rough that will not be trampled down of course, and then were expecting quicker greens and run-off areas shaved to within an inch of their lives.

Of course, the weather may play havoc with that ideal. There is some rain and thunderstorms in the forecast, and so if the rain falls in any great quantity then that will slow the surfaces we could be looking at another iron-and-putt contest if that is the case.

Anyone that saw Jack Nicklaus play this incredible sport knows he was a ball-striking machine, and that skillset has been introduced into his own golf course design too. Hitting the ball in a straight line is key at Muirfield Village!

But again, to confirm, it is the weather that could have a huge bearing on how this track plays this week. Are we looking at a razor-sharp test of all-round golf, or will this be a soft test in which hitting your approaches close to the pin is key?

On Sunday, Patrick Cantlay showed why he is a former champion at Muirfield Village.

He delivered a sublime 65 only Jon Rahm bettered that on the day, and once again showed the sort of suitability for the test that saw him lift this trophy 12 months ago.

Embed from Getty ImagesCantlays top-10 in the Workday was a really nice sighter for the challenge ahead, and continues his fine form that has yielded two top-10s and a pair of T11s within his last five starts.

He has all-round ability with no weaknesses in any department, and that will probably be the order of the day this week over a player who is strong in one area but lacking in others.

A man reborn after changing his driver, Gary Woodland found a bit of something last week.

His top-five at Muirfield was franked by a huge improvement off the tee, with the US Open gaining +0.85 strokes gained in this department with the Wilson driver that took him to that major title.

Woodlands putting stroke looked really smooth too, and all told he looks ready to contend for silverware again.

He got a good look at the layout last week, and hell be looking to improve on that T5 this time around.

With form as our guide, Abraham Ancer is playing the golf of his life right now and is looking good in all areas of his game.

There are doubts about his mettle in contention particularly when he will have some heavyweights chasing him down in this field, and so a top-10 wager is possibly the smart move as far as the Mexican is concerned right now.

Embed from Getty Images

Ancer has been recording some outstanding tee-to-green stats of late, and he is a solid putter on any given day so thats a winning combination that could fly at Muirfield.

Having finished no lower than T14 in his last three starts, Ancer will be looking to really cash in this week.

In the top-20 market we can pin our hopes on tee-to-green specialists who can, very occasionally, get hot with the putter.

Of late, Lucas Glover is a player that has been trending in that direction, and he actually putted well on the Bentgrass/Poa of TPC River Highlands a few weeks ago a rarity indeed!

Glovers game is based on precision off the tee and on approach, and improvements in those areas have led to four consecutive top-25 finishes since the seasons restart bizarrely, hes only banked one wager in the top-20 market, however.

If the rain comes and slows the greens, you would expect Glover to go along very nicely.

Heres a very interesting matchup indeed Bryson DeChambeau taking on Justin Thomas.

Will Bryson throw the kitchen sink off the tee? Remember, he has won at Muirfield before, but back in 2018 he was playing VERY different golf to what he is displaying at the moment.

Embed from Getty Images

We dont expect Justin Thomas to suffer a hangover following his play-off loss last week, and hes experienced enough now to take the knock and learn from it.

Based on course fit with regards to Bryson 2.0 were inclined to suggest JT is the play here.

Unsurprisingly, Tiger Woods is a serial winner at Muirfield Village.

But its been three months since he hit a competitive ball in anger, and while he looked in reasonable touch in The Match against Phil Mickelson, thats a world away from 72 holes against the best players in the world.

Sorry Big Cat; not this week. But well be keeping a close eye on you nonetheless.

Bill allowing deduction of gambling losses dies – Cherokee Phoenix

BYD. SEAN ROWLEY Senior Reporter

07/12/2020 02:00 PM

House Bill 2667, authored by State Rep. Kevin Wallace, R-Wellston, would have allowed the exclusion of gambling losses under Oklahomas $17,000 cap on itemized deductions.

During the 2019 session, the bill passed the House by a 83-16 vote, with the yeas including area legislators Matt Meredith, D-Tahlequah; Chris Sneed, R-Muskogee; and David Hardin, R-Stilwell. State law already allows the omission of charitable contributions and medical expenses when itemizing.

The measure then emerged from the Senate Finance Committee on April 2 with a unanimous recommendation of Do Pass, but with its enacting and emergency clauses stricken.

HB 2667 hurdled the Senate by a 32-12 vote, but conversely, none of the area senators supported the bill. Republicans Kim David, of Porter; Wayne Shaw, of Grove; and Dewayne Pemberton, of Muskogee, all voted nay. The Senates changes were rejected by the House, sending the measure to a conference committee from which it never emerged.

We never heard it or saw it on the Senate side, said Pemberton. It may be able to come back next year in another form, but this year it is dead.

Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the legislative session focused on the most pressing business.

We didnt get to hardly anything, Pemberton said. We got through the committee work, and had switched bills between the houses, and then after the next couple of days we had the outbreak. One senator got the virus, and they sent us home. There was a lot of conferencing over the internet, but as far as running bills we didnt do anything like that for the next six weeks. We got back to work on mostly health related bills, the things we absolutely we had to deal with. We did the basics, got the budget done and got out of there as quickly as we could.

Pemberton added that there was no legislation passed that directly dealt with or affected Oklahomas tribal governments, saying lawmakers only did what we had to do.

It was a strange session, to be honest, he said. We only passed 175 bills, and in a normal session we pass 450 or 500. A lot of good bills were left on the table I had two or three that were under consideration but we didnt have time to address them.

While HB 2667 is technically dead, Pemberton said bills can often cheat termination.

According to the rules, it is dead, he said. But we discussed the idea that due to COVID-19 we might possibly change the rules next year and consider some bills from this session. Nothing is ever truly dead in the state Legislature.

Some criticism was directed at HB 2667 because the Oklahoma Tax Commission projected its passage could result in a total revenue loss of $17.8 million.

Taxpayer itemized deductions were capped at $17,000 per year by HB 1011xx of 2018 the measure that obtained revenue for the states teacher raises. The bill also got funding from a $1 tax per pack of cigarettes, an increase in the gross production tax on new oil and gas wells from 2 percent to 5 percent, and an added 3-cent gasoline tax and 6-cent diesel tax per gallon.

The Cherokee Nation never publicly announced any official stance on HB 2667.

Is Iran Really Winning the War With Unauthorized Online Gambling sites? – Tunf.com News

It was a valiant effort against recalcitrant online gambling sites and maybe Iran really is winning the war.

The unauthorized sites increase cybercrime, according to top cybercop GeneralVahid Majid, and it is growing year by year.

Gambling in any form is strictly illegal in the Islamic Republic of Iran, with the authorities even targeting state televisions version oftheWho Wants To Be A Millionairegame show.

The FATA cyber police unit was formed in 2011 and has since been hot on the sites trail. Majid made the comments at a recent press conference to warn the public that promoting online gambling on social media or digital channels would have repercussions.

Majic said that FATA targeted 6,157 sites and 730 websites engaged in such activities, resulting in 2,884 judicial actions. Clearly it has been on track. In October of 2019, pre-pandemic, Majid was celebrating the disruption of61 online gambling sites.

Early this year, the FATA chief in Hamadan province warned the public that:

Anyone who wants to bet on cyberspace is guilty according to the law and will be dealt with.

It is a long prison for errant Iranian nationals (up to six months) as well as 74 lashes if caught in illegal gambling.

Gambling operators can face up to two years or longer for repeat offenders

The bulk of Iran-facing gambling operations are conducted from outside the country to avoid such punishment.

The primary base of operations for betting sites is said to be Turkey using aa stable of Farsi-speaking Instagram influencers and some popular hip-hop artists to pitch the best online action.

Thankfully, these sites have no direct access to Irans banking system, so customers have to deal with third-parties to convert Iranian tomans into digital currency.

The number of visits by Maltese citizens to village gambling parlours has increased steadily over the past four years, while the number of visits by foreign nationals has more than tripled over the same period.

Visitor figures were presented by Finance Minister Edward Scicluna in response to a parliamentary question by Opposition MP Hermann Schiavone.

The total number of visits to gambling parlours almost doubled between 2016 and 2019, from 432,177 to 799,420 visits.

While the increase in the number of Maltese visitors was considerable during the period from 338,635 to 460,852 the number of visits by foreign nationals rose dramatically, from just 93,542 to 338,568.

The figures supplied by Scicluna show that the number of visits to Maltese casinos also increased over the same period, albeit slightly, with the increase entirely attributable to foreign nationals.

Casinos welcomed 904,412 visitors in 2016, with the number reaching 940,766 last year. But the number of Maltese visitors is on a slight downward trend: casinos received 426,756 visits from Maltese nationals in 2016, with the number falling to 410,671 last year.

But the number of visits by foreign nationals increased every year, from 477,656 in 2016 to a peak of 530,096 last year.

Schiavone also asked Scicluna a related question on the economic impact of gambling a sector which also includes burgeoning online gambling activity with the minister revealing that its importance has been increasing.

The sectors gross value added output rose from 1.27 billion in 2017 to 1.56 billion last year.

The number of people employed by the sector also increased correspondingly, from 6,673 in 2017 to 7,417 full-time equivalent positions two years later. Maltese nationals only account for a minority of these employees, though their number correspondingly increased from 2,088 to 2,794.

Seven Types of Bets You Can Make In Poker – Poker News – CardPlayer.com

As a beginner in the poker world, youd be forgiven for thinking that all the bets in poker are one and the same.

But theyre not!

In fact, there are as many types of bets in poker as there are many forms of the game itself. If you can understand and master how each of these betting types works, you can rest assured that youve just safeguarded your chances of winning against any poker opponent. But, of course, where will you find this information?

You might spend the whole day scouring the internet or skimming through books. Luckily for you, weve done the heavy lifting, and weve come up with this guide. Here you will find all the types of poker bets that are there. Read till the end, and make sure you know each one like the back of your hand before you proceed to a poker online site like omiqq to gamble your money.

Donk bet

Normally in poker, when someone sees that the guy in the pre-flop is playing aggressively, they let them continue to do so regardless of how good their own hand might be on the flop.

In contrast, a donk bettor does the opposite of this.

Donk betting in poker refers to a situation whereby a player bets into the raiser instead of checking to them. As the name might have hinted you, it is really not a smart type of betting. Although some pro players use it on specific occasions to counter aggressive opponents, donk betting is really not a safe way to play in the long-term.

Continuation bet (C-bet)

In poker, when a player raises before the flop, theyll almost always continue to represent a strong hand by betting on the flop as well. This is known as a continuation bet, and it is one of the most common types of bet in all of poker.

Continuation betting the flop after raising pre-flop is something that even inexperienced players do. This gives you a chance to put more pressure on your opponent and win the pot right then and there regardless of your particular hand strength. The main idea behind c-betting is that the other player is unlikely to have connected with the flop, so theyll often release their hand without any resistance.

Overbet

Properly sizing your bets in poker is very important as experienced players make their decisions based on pure mathematics. In general, you want to size your bets in relation to the pot, and, for the most part, you dont want to bet more chips than whats already in the middle.

Underbet

When youre trying to calculate the right size for your bet, you want to make it in relation to the size of the pot. Usually, betting something around half the pot is a good amount, as it gives you an opportunity to continue building the pot when you have a hand but also puts your opponent to a decision as to whether or not they want to continue.

Just like you usually dont want to bet huge, betting very small is also not a typical play. This is whats known as underbet, and it doesnt really achieve those two goals from the previous paragraph.

Three-bet (re-raise)

When one player raises and another player re-raises, this is known as a 3-bet. This can happen both pre-flop and on later streets. Usually, a 3-bet signals strength as the 3-betting player is coming over the top of the initial opener, showing theyre willing to commit more chips to the pot.

Value Bet

There are typically two reasons for betting in poker. Youre either betting to get your opponent to fold (bluffing), or youre betting because you have what you believe is the best hand and want them to call. The latter scenario describes whats known as a value bet.

Pot Bet

As mentioned in some of the previous poker bet types, your bets usually represent a certain percentage of the pot (be it 30%, 50%, or 70%, etc.). Sometimes, though, you might just want to bet the exact amount of chips that are in the middle. This is known as a pot bet or a pot-sized bet.

Kami Hudson Finds Satisfaction In Poker, Happiness In Honduras – PocketFives

When Las Vegas-based poker pro Kami Hudson decides to do something she tends to go full out.

From her morning meditation routine clearing her head, setting her intentions, and getting active to grinding online, Hudsons approach to all of her passions is one of positivity and going for it.

Im a big believer in positive thinking and in poker and in life I do my best to look on the bright side of things.

And theres been plenty to be positive about for Hudson, who plays on WSOP.com under the screen name Loco4coco, when it comes to her poker career. More specifically, her positivity helped her in her recent victory in the World Series of Poker $320 Online Circuit Season Finale NLHE event in which she took home her first career gold ring and a payday of over $50,000.

I was really excited to win a ring, Hudson said. As all MTT players know, it isnt easy to win a tournament, and all of the close calls can really start to wear on you.

Hudson had been tracking down a WSOP Circuit ring for years, making three final tables over the past three years in various WSOPC events. She also bubbled a WSOP final table in 2017, finishing in 10th place in a $1,500 event for over $23,000. But those close calls just encouraged her press forward.

Yes, Ive had a lot of close calls and have been close to winning several events, but instead of letting that get me down, I use it as motivation and look at it as a sign that I am growing, she said. I dont look at it as a failure but instead as improvement and that I must be doing a lot of things right to get so deep and close.

Hudson, who grew up in Oklahoma and earned her degree in Human Relations from the University of Oklahoma, has always found herself drawn to pursuits that lend themselves to success in the game.

As a kid growing up and throughout my entire life I have always been curious and inquisitive, into playing games, solving various kinds of puzzles, and super interested in studying people and the psychology behind everything I encounter, she said. Ive been around a poker environment since the age of 18 and thats how I began picking it up. In the beginning, it was more of just a hobby and it wasnt until about four years ago I became more interested in it and started taking it more seriously.

At the same time that Hudson first encountered poker, she also was introduced to another life passion. In her first year of college, she was invited to go on a trip to Honduras to visit and work with an orphanage.

From that very first trip, I fell in love with the people and the place, and the rest is history, she said. Those kids broke my heart wide open and change my entire life in the best ways possible. Thirteen years and twenty trips later, it has become my biggest passion.

Hudson isnt a part of an organization, its a personal endeavor that she at first shared with a friend but now has now extended to her entire family including her parents and sisters. Projects for the orphanage have included installing an entire water purifying system, purchasing a new playground, fixing up the building, providing greater security and essential items like bedding and pillows for the children.

But the biggest thing I have a heart for, the type of service most important to me, is investing my time and energy into the children emotionally and mentally, she said. After her first trip, she immediately started learning Spanish so she could better connect with the kids. I spend a lot of my time there sitting with the kids and communicating about life and their goals and what we can do to accomplish their dreams.

Each time I leave, I leave a piece of my heart there, but at least I know I leave with them knowing that they are loved, brave, smart and that people believe in them, she said. My days there are spent laughing, crying, playing, building, teaching, learning, starting and keeping traditions, showing consistency, capturing the good times on camera so that they can have photos of a happy childhood with people who love them with people who love them, and making memories with some of the most beautiful people on the planet.

I know it might not look like much to some people but to these kids, it might be the first time a person has been a constant source of love and support in their life.

That love and support, when at its best, is a two-way street. Hudson not only has had the opportunity to change the lives of children in desperate need but in return, she found love and purpose in her own life.

I will never forget the time I heard one of my little 6-year-olds praying before dinner, and she prayed for the lives and health of her mother and father, who she had never met, and then followed that with all of the things she was grateful for. That hit me hard, Hudson said. Those kids have changed my life, they have given me so much. I will never be able to repay them, but I will continuously return to them, over and over, to do all that I can to try.

Hudson credits her current life as a poker pro with giving her the flexible schedule and free time to continually support the orphanage and the kids. She has plans on returning to Honduras at some point after her current World Series of Poker grind.

I plan on playing the majority of the WSOP.com/USA event because I think they are amazing value, she said, noting that one of the reasons she originally moved to Las Vegas was to have access to these types of events. I do intend to travel to Mexico to play some of the [GGPoker] events next month, but mainly the $1Ks and lower. Winning an online bracelet would be a great accomplishment but I dont think I will feel fully satisfied until I win one live.

For Hudson though, satisfaction in poker is one thing while the definition of success is another.

We all have our definitions of success, she said. Success and happiness are relative. One of the biggest lessons my kids in Honduras have taught me is that happiness isnt based on material things. Because despite not having money or many material items, they are so much happier than the majority of people I know who society would consider being rich.In my opinion, the key to happiness and success is being grateful for what you have and always doing the best you can with what you know at the time.

Dennis Atkins: The stakes couldnt be higher in PMs poker game with China – The New Daily

The Australia-China relationship has never been hotter than right now.

The list of areas of dispute, potentially harmful economic interactions and direct diplomatic and strategic tension is long and growing.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison has made contentious and confrontational announcements and commentary in respect of China every week since late June, from warnings of cyber attacks, a massive realignment of defence strategy clearly aimed at the Middle Kingdom and, just days ago, tough-talking pushback against new security laws in Hong Kong.

Theres every reason to call China out for a range of economic, strategic and societal hard-line activity, but the way Australia is standing up to its largest trading partner is without precedent.

Its easy to see why Morrison is doing this he understands Chinas standing among those quiet Australians he wraps himself around is toxic.

Australians blame China for the coronavirus pandemic and see the country as a threat to our interests whether theyre strategic, economic or something as simple as using a digital device.

The short-term politics at play might work to Morrisons benefit but whether megaphone diplomacy and envelope-pushing military posturing are in our long term interest is doubtful and possibly dangerous.

The Labor Opposition has been cautious but a long-form essay from the partys foreign affairs spokeswoman, Penny Wong, issues a string of warnings of what is at stake in this diplomatic version of Texas Hold Em.

Wongs essay, The End of Orthodoxy, to be published on Monday in Australian Foreign Affairs, has a number of clear-eyed observations.

Four stand out as vital for the immediate and medium-term.

First, and most importantly, Australia should avoid getting caught in the slipstream of big power rivalry between China and the United States, with 30-year horizons and not three-year domestic political cycles.

Second, we should not just concentrate on the coronavirus and its economic fallout but also keep our eye on climate change, which Wong identifies as the next pandemic.

Third, we have to work twice as hard to promote and nurture multilateralism a multilateralism that works for the post-COVID era and for the global challenges that lie ahead.

Finally, Wong rings a loud bell on the dangers facing our nearest Asian neighbour, Indonesia, which she says may be at risk of foundering.

Wongs warning on Indonesias outlook highlights the failure of the Morrison Government to pay enough attention to our northern neighbour at a critical time.

Morrison had a bilateral phone hook up with Joko Widodo (following a visit by the Indonesian President just weeks before COVID-19 changed everything) but this was mainly focused on the new economic and trade deal which came into force last weekend.

Wong takes a much broader view, looking at the risk of financial contagion for Indonesia, which she says is particularly acute and for which the country is not prepared.

Australia and the region cannot afford for Indonesia to founder, and we must stand ready to assist it, she writes.

Noting Australias stability and prosperity rely on a stable and prosperous South-East Asia, Wong cautions that few ASEAN member-states have the resources to deal comprehensively with the health and economic effects of the pandemic.

The pandemic may lead to humanitarian, economic and internal security crises with serious ramifications for the wider stability of the region.

On the related issues of the heightened tensions between China and the US and the weakening of multilateralism, Wong points to opportunities for Australia to take a regional and global lead in working around the roadblocks of great power competition.

She says none of the most pressing issues in this complex environment is simple but all require a more active foreign policy and a deeper investment in our diplomacy and the recognition that Australia needs to be more self-reliant in protecting and promoting our interests.

Wongs toughest language still couched in the measured words of diplomacy is a clear shot at the way Morrison has been playing politics with international relations, especially as they apply to China and the region.

Public interventions and rhetorical grenades designed to gain attention or tactical advantage serve little purpose, and distract from the far more challenging task at hand, writes Wong.

Put simply, we dont have time for negative globalism. We need to think about 30-year horizons, not three-year election cycles.

The global disruption in recent years has already generated sharp domestic debate about foreign policy. It will be even more difficult to confront change of the magnitude we now face. It can generate resistance and denial.

Wong concludes with a note of hope that Australia can meet the challenge for a new foreign policy ambition, based on consistency and discipline.

The question now for Wong and Labor is whether they are happy offering sober, nuanced commentary as pointed as it is in this essay or should they take the fight up to the Morrison Government.

Many in senior Labor ranks believe Morrison is winning the politics and what is needed is a loud effort to call out his naked opportunism.

Wongs essay is but the first step on meeting this challenge.

Panicking Professional Poker Player Suddenly Cant Remember Whether Ace Is Better Than King – The Onion

LAS VEGASFeeling completely helpless while staring down at his cards, professional poker player Tony Eggold reportedly began to panic Thursday after suddenly realizing he couldnt remember whether an ace was better than a king. Okay, okay focusI have $147,000 in the pot right now, so Ive got to figure this out fast, said Eggold, whose eyes darted anxiously between the two cards as he struggled to decipher whether the ace of hearts in his hand was lower than a king because its not a monarch or higher than a king because of alphabetical order. Someone said deuce is wild at one point, does that factor in at all? Shit. This is not good. Come on, Tony, youve been doing this for years. Just think, dammit. Its got to be either higher or lower. Unless theyre equal? Fuck. Maybe I could just ask someone. At press time, Eggold was even more frustrated after the player beside him admitted he didnt know the answer either.

Astronomers found a giant intergalactic wall of galaxies hiding in plain sight – MIT Technology Review

Astronomers have found one of the largest structures in the known universean intergalactic wall of galaxies thats at least 1.4 billion light-years long. And given how close it is to us, its remarkable that we havent seen it before now.

What happened: An international team of scientists reported the discovery of the South Pole Wall in a paper published Thursday in the Astrophysical Journal. The structure is basically a curtain that stretches across the southern border of the universe (from the perspective of Earth) and consists of thousands of galaxies, along with huge amounts of gas and dust.

What do you mean by wall? Galaxies arent just strewn randomly throughout the universe. Along huge strands of hydrogen, galaxies collect into larger groupings of massive filaments, separated by giant voids of nearly empty space. Each filament is basically a wall of galaxies, stretching for hundreds of millions of light-years. Theyre the biggest structures in the known universe. Other identified walls include the Great Wall, the Sloan Great Wall, the Hercules-Corona Borealis Great Wall, and the Bootes Void.

Put together, these walls make up what astronomers call the cosmic web. Piecing together the cosmic web is one of the major pursuits of cosmologyit would not only tell us about the structure of the universe and its interior but could also help us better understand how the universe was formed and how its evolved over time.

Why is this one special? Its so close! The South Pole Wall is just half a billion light-years away. In fact, this is part of the reason it was so hard to find until nowit is situated right behind the Milky Way galaxy, in a place called the Zone of Galactic Obscuration, where the galaxys brightness effectively kept the wall shrouded in plain sight.

So how was it found? Cosmological surveys are often done by measuring objects redshift: the speed at which those objects seem to be moving away from Earth thanks to the expansion of the universe. The faster an object is receding, the farther away it is.

The team behind the South Pole Wall discovery did redshift observations as part of their survey of the sky, but they also added measurements of the velocity of certain galaxies, which illustrates how they gravitationally interact with one another. This technique can alert astronomers to unseen masseswhile its normally used to investigate dark matter, it can also just highlight masses obscured by bright light. Using this data, the researchers were able to map out the South Pole Wall for the first time.

Beyond the twilight zone: Living on a two-faced world – Astronomy Magazine

But you dont need a twilight zone to support life if you have the right atmosphere, says Abbot.

An atmosphere transports heat around the planet, making conditions that could support liquid water and perhaps life more widespread. It wouldn't just be at the terminator, Abbot says, it would be all over the place.

Theres a balancing act: The atmosphere needs to be dense enough to transport heat, but not so dense as to become smothering. Conversely, if the nightside becomes too cold, it could freeze the gases out, stealing an atmosphere entirely.

A 2016 simulation developed by Abbot and Koll indicates that the right balance is achievable: Some tidally locked exoplanets could host just right atmospheres that move heat around efficiently enough to keep even the night side warm.

It would be strange because it would be permanently night but you might still have conditions where life similar to ours could exist, says Koll. Consider the poles on Earth, where life persists, even though sunlight is scarce. It doesnt get too deadly cold, in great part because wind or motions of the ocean actually redistribute heat.

On Earth, oceans are key players in the global circulation of heat; water holds more heat energy than air and is far more efficient at moving that heat around. So, along with an atmosphere, oceans could play an important role in keeping the day and night sides of a tidally locked exoplanet temperate.

Oceans also lead to evaporation, spurring the formation of clouds that can also play an important role in regulating conditions on a planet, says Feng Ding, a researcher at Harvard studying exoplanet atmospheres. Clouds that form as water collects in the atmosphere can serve as a kind of reflective blanket, bouncing incoming stellar radiation back out and helping to cool a planet.

Some computer simulations suggest that clouds could keep temperatures low enough for oceans to form even on exoplanets that might otherwise be boiling hot. And those clouds would create rain. On the planets day side, strong updrafts created where sunlight is most intense would move warm, wet air upwards, creating torrential rainstorms, says Pierrehumbert.

Look Up! Astronomer Says July Skies Are Brimming With Planets, Constellations – Here And Now

Searching for something to do this summer? Making plans can be as easy as looking up.

The summer skies are filled with planets, stars and constellations, many visible without a telescope, astronomer Dean Regas says.

Regas, author of "100 Things to See in the Night Sky, Expanded Edition," says he stargazes as an escape from coronavirus lockdown.

If you want to start mapping the skies, nows a good time to begin. The two biggest planets in our solar system Jupiter and Saturn are inching closer and closer as July progresses, he says.

You might have already caught a glimpse of their rise in the southeastern sky, he says.

To identify constellations, Regas suggests getting familiar with directions and heights. You can utilize technology such as compass apps or measure angles using your hands, he says.

When looking for angles, use your pinky to mark one degree of sky, use three fingers for five degrees and make a fist for 10 degrees.

He says to look for pointer stars this time of year, such as the three-starred asterism known as the Summer Triangle.

They'll be great guides to tell you which way the east is. And they'll be up all summer long, he says.

The Big Dipper is another constellation to keep your eyes peeled for. The two stars at the end of the Big Dipper will point you to the North Star and the giant red star called Arcturus which is among the brightest stars that can be seen from Earth.

Another summer celestial body to look for is Antares, a reddish star that is full of color and twinkles a lot, Regas says.

Antares is the star that marks the heart of the Scorpius, my favorite summertime constellation, and you can get to see that every night in July, he says.

Because of light pollution, residing in a city makes it harder to see the stars above. But Regas says because of the coronavirus shutdowns across the country, the skies have been a bit clearer.

If you can plan to get out of the city, the annual Perseid meteor shower in August is a chance to witness something spectacular. Although meteor showers are fickle beasts that are tough to predict, Perseid is looking to be the best shower of the year, he says.

They peak on August 12 and 13, he says. That's a time where the moon won't get in the way and wash out a lot of the meteors.

Regas says even though were looking up into infinity, stargazing can ground us. For him, it brings a sense of comfort.

It takes you out of the earthly realm, he says. And I know we're all doing social distancing, but this is about as social distanced as you can get.

NYU Astronomer Searches for Life, and Meaning, on Other Planets – NYU News

Searching for evidence of life on other planets starts with evaluating a few key factors. We study exoplanet habitability as a first step towards finding life, says Pope. First, are planets with pleasant atmospheres and temperatures common? What are they like? And one day we'll be able to find outdo they harbor life?

Given the distance between the Earth and other planetary systems, finding exoplanets in the first place requires high-tech code and high-grade equipment. Astronomers typically use telescopes to detect visible or infrared light from the star. But Pope and a team of researchers recently developed a new method for looking at radio emissions instead, which researchers had been trying to do for decades.

"Working with the Dutch national observatory ASTRON and New Yorks Flatiron Institute, we were able to detect radio waves emitted by a nearby star magnetically connected to its planet and ruled out alternative explanations with optical telescope follow-up," Pope explains. "Planets in orbits like this receive similar amount of light from their stars as the Earth does from the Sun, so you might think they could be green and pleasant. The radio evidence, however, indicates that magnetic connection could be blasting the planets surface with hostile radiationbad news if we were hoping to find life there."

The findings give Pope the feeling that hes one step closer to addressing the deeper questions that first attracted him to astronomy. And the team plans to continue searching for radio signals from exoplanets to understand their usually harsh, irradiated environments.

At a broader level, this is probably our first window into using radio processes to understand exoplanets, Pope says. People have been trying this for decades and weve found the first objects. Its not that weve got a new way of detecting planets, its that we have a new way of understanding them.
