Collaborative Robots and Lean Integrators Bring Automation to Small and Medium-Size Enterprises – Robotics Business Review

Until fairly recently, automation has been primarily been a big-company advantage. Several factors have now begun to level the playing field, including the emergence of collaborative robots, or cobots. Cobots have introduced many of the same benefits to small and medium-size enterprises (SMEs) that traditional robotics and automation offered large organizations. The big difference is that cobots provide a safer, more compact, and more intuitive solution that can be implemented quicker and more cost-effectively.

Lean IntegratorsLike their large, traditional robot counterparts, cobots have also spawned a new class of integrators specially adapted to the needs of SMEs who wish to leverage automation. Unlike traditional integrators, these lean integrators are built for speed and cost/overhead containment rather than handling large, custom-engineered projects, and they typically specialize in serving highly targeted applications or markets. These lean integrators are further leveling the playing field for SMEs in highly innovative and cost-effective ways.

Lean integrators typically focus on mastering one or two end applications within a regional market and often employ no more than 10 to 15 people, including the principal or owner, who often doubles as the project manager and head of finance.

Bigger Is Not Always BetterThe history of automation in large enterprises helps clarify the need for todays evolution. More than a half century ago, the emergence of industrial robots introduced revolutionary gains in productivity, efficiency, and consistency for manufacturing enterprises. From an embryonic start in automotive body shops and forging and casting operations, industrial robots quickly spread across all industries. Few manufacturers, however, possessed the resources or expertise to design and commission industrial robotic solutions in-house without help from outside experts. As a result, there emerged a new class of system integrators capable of tackling large industrial robot installations.

The general business model, staff structure, and project execution methodology of traditional integrators evolved from the demands of large-scale traditional robot customers. In addition to the significant capital investment required to implement a new robot-based production line, the process often requires disruptive changes to a facilitys power structure, floor plan, and operational procedures. The risks implicit with trying to tackle such installations internally are exacerbated by the prohibitive downtime cost. It makes good business sense to outsource a large project (and the associated risks) to a traditional system integrator who can bring the resources and expertise to specify, build, install, program, and troubleshoot the installation in as little time as possible and with the highest probability of success.

The traditional integrators that emerged were often vertically integrated operations that encompassed multiple shops for machining, fabrication, welding, and assembly, as well as factory floors spanning hundreds of thousands of square feet. Execution of a single project often begins with a kick-off meeting among representatives of multiple departments, including mechanical and controls engineering, project management, sales, software, application engineering, and possibly even finance. (The client meeting generally followed later.) The integrators agenda for a kick-off meeting might include a review of ISO process documentation; discussions about project overhead, capitalization, and cash flow; and the designation of a dedicated project team.

Due to the overhead of such projects, the typical contract from a traditional integrator was rarely less than $250,000; often the cutoff was much higher.

Large Scale, Large OverheadLike industrial robots, these integrators were built for scale. To handle the implementation demands of highly capitalized corporate players, they were necessarily big, well-resourced organizations that could tackle large, complex robotic engineering, programming, and installation functions. Unfortunately, large scale also meant large overhead from management, personnel, floor space, and processes. Due to the overhead of such projects, the typical contract from a traditional integrator was rarely less than $250,000; often the cutoff was much higher.

This business model made these integrators ill-equipped to adapt to the needs and means of SMEs. As a consequence, these smaller manufacturers have benefited far less from the operational advantages that robotic technology has offered. The impact of this is evident in the 300% productivity growth that large enterprises gained during the first decade of this century alone, versus the 200% productivity gains achieved by firms numbering fewer than 500 employees.[1]

Laser-Focused on Lean SolutionsIn contrast, the lean integrator evolved precisely to address the SME markets growing demand for robot installations that yield higher productivity at a lower price point and that can be installed in a fraction of the time of a traditional robot work cell. Like the SMEs they serve, lean integrators are small enterprises themselves. The two features that distinguish lean integrators from their traditional counterparts are size and speed.

Lean integrators typically focus on mastering one or two end applications within a regional market and often employ no more than 10 to 15 people, including the principal or owner, who often doubles as the project manager and head of finance. Their operational footprints rarely exceed 10,000 square feet, and they tend to deploy capital on knowledge workers rather than equipment for vertical integration. All this translates into much lower operational overhead while spurring innovation, which enables lean integrators to be successful even when taking on projects under $100,000. It also allows them to commission cobot installations within weeks rather than the months-long process required to integrate industrial robots.

Less vertical integration means that lean integrators tend to favor off-the-shelf cobot peripherals and accessories over fabricating every tool in-house to meet a unique specification. The make-versus-buy debate usually ends with a buy decision, keeping overhead down and speed of execution up. This approach has facilitated the growth of partner ecosystems around cobots. The largest of these, Universal Robots+ (or UR+ for short), is a global ecosystem of components, software, and application kits that have been validated and certified to be compatiblemechanically, electrically, and digitallywith cobots from Universal Robots (UR). This approach further drives down time, cost, and risk as compared with a traditional automation approach.

Specializing in serving smaller enterprises that have very specific application needs may seem like a losing business model. The truth is, however, that lean integrators address a much larger overall market for their services.

Specializing in serving smaller enterprises that have very specific application needs may seem like a losing business model. The truth is, however, that lean integrators address a much larger overall market for their services. Most manufacturing firms in the United States are SMEs, according to U.S. Census Bureau statistics on U.S. businesses. Moreover, 83% of these establishments have less than 500 employees, 77% of companies have less than 100 employees, and 69% of all companies have less than 20 employees.

The unique value proposition of many lean integrators boils down to a highly targeted specialty defined by the targeted customer and application, as illustrated by examples of two lean integrators described below Vectis Automation and Fusion Cobotics. Both focus on improving the efficiency and productivity of a specific application for a particular class of customer. Also, notably, both have built business models that would have been difficult to impossible to achieve before the emergence of cobots.

A Focus on WeldingFounded in 2019 in Fort Collins, Colorado, Vectis Automation assembled a team of engineers with more than 75 years of combined expertise in traditional robotic welding applications. In addition to their technical fluency, team members can also attest to the positive impact robots have had in helping large enterprises bridge the burgeoning skills gap in welding.

The welding profession, like so many manufacturing-related trades, is experiencing a graying effect that points toward a future shortage of experienced workers. The average age of a U.S. welder is 55, according to research by Deloitte, and most welders are likely to retire within 10 years. Comparing this pending wave of retirements to the current talent pipeline, the American Welding Society projects that the shortage of welding professionals in the U.S. will reach 291,000 in 2020. This labor gap affects organizations of all sizes. But for SMEs, which have struggled to leverage traditional robots due to cost, support, and specialized engineering requirements, the labor gap could be painfully acute.

Recognizing this as a market opportunity for a cobot solution, Vectis founders launched the company with the specific strategic aim to leverage lower-cost, lower-risk, easily implemented cobots to help smaller welding operations improve productivity through automation.

There are a lot of small to medium-size manufacturers who have more production POs coming in than they have the capacity to fill given the currentand worseningshortage of welders. They cannot leverage traditional automation because there are significant barriers to entry involving capital costs, programming, implementation, lead time, cost, risk, and training.

Josh Pawley, Director of Business Development and Co-founder, Vectis Automation

Vectis business model embodies the lean integrator methodology. The company has streamlined its cost structure by creating a system-level product and by partnering with a single cobot providerUniversal Robotsto support it. Vectis can then add value by tailoring the cobot, equipment, and software to the customers application. The Vectis teams collective background in welding allows them to bring unique expertise to customer application support and develop software targeted to welding fabricators. They know what makes a good weld, and theyre able to apply that knowledge to the cobot product kit.

Vectis customers range from users who have never touched a robot to shops operating up to 20 traditional robotic welding cells. But they all value cobots for their comparative ease of implementation, programming, and training. And with Vectis help, cobot technology can be installed in hours or days instead of weeks or months. One Vectis customer claims they were removing shrink-wrap from URs product in the morning and were in production on their own by the afternoon.

Focused on CNC Machine TendingLocated just southwest of Chicago, Fusion Cobotics did not begin as a lean integrator. The company launched in 2002 to offer contract assembly services to OEMs that wanted to outsource assembly of their legacy equipment. It wasnt until 2018 that someone on the production team suggested using a cobot to tend Fusions CNC machines. The cobot worked so well that Fusion added another and then another, until it eventually leveraged its internal application expertise to create a new business model.

Today, Fusion helps small to medium-sized job shops focused on high-mix, low-volume applications to automate the tending of CNC mills and lathes, as well as press brakes for sheet metal. Fusion partners exclusively with Universal Robots, which provides a familiar technology base that Fusion can tailor to customer applications.

Even by lean integrator standards, Fusions physical operation is small. It dedicates 15 by 15 feet of floor space and an engineering staff numbering under 10 people to assemble and test a customers system before installing it within weeks of the initial meeting. Such projects require an investment between $60,000 and $150,000, depending on project size, but 80% are under $100,000, according to Fusion representatives.

Theres not a lot of people signing up for machine tending jobs, especially at smaller shops in rural areas, where Fusion sees the greatest demand for its business.

Craig Zoberis, President, Fusion Cobotics

Cobot technology effectively enables Fusion to adopt its lean integrator business model. Fusion can often formulate the total project cost for a new customer within hours after a first meeting and can provide an electronic quote within days. Shipment of the robot might take seven to 10 days, and Fusions team is on-site with the customer shortly after to connect the cobot to the CNC machine. The team typically spends another day training the customer and ramps to full production on day three.

Fusions customers typically see a 25% to 30% improvement in efficiency, which routinely translates into a return on investment in 10 to 11 months. Importantly, with Fusions cobot-enabled solutions, customers also achieve more predictable output than they would with manual machine tendingassuming they can even find and retain machine tenders.

A Parallel Future for Cobots and Lean IntegratorsCobot technology and lean integrators emerged in parallel, and for now, their futures are similarly linked. Cobots enable lean integrators to implement smaller-scale automation solutions with minimal overhead, while lean integrators are introducing robot automation to the massive and largely untapped SME market. The outlook for both is bright. Market analyst firm Analyst MarketsandMarkets credits demand from SMEs as a key driver behind the remarkable 50% compound annual growth rate (CAGR) it projects for the cobot market from 2018 to 2025 when the market should top $12.3 billion.

Much of the business from SMEs will be serviced by specialized lean integrators and possibly by lean integrators that consolidate their services to form larger firms that manage several application-focused departments. For now, it is clear that the emergence of cobots is introducing revolutionary gains in productivity, efficiency, and consistency to SMEs for the first time since commercial robots emerged. The demand is there for entrepreneurs with the expertise, resources, and ambition to capitalize on it.

Collaborative Robots and Lean Integrators Bring Automation to Small and Medium-Size Enterprises - Robotics Business Review

Recent Study Identifies how Automation and Employment are Linked – Analytics Insight

It is not surprising that Automation will change the industry landscape while impacting the employment percentage of the common man. Robots have been replacing humans over the past decades in several countries. While some experts believe that it will lead to a future without work, others are unconvinced of this forecast.

A study co-authored by Daron Acemoglu, an MIT economist and Pascual Restrepo, an assistant professor of economics at Boston University, states the statistics on this trend and how the impact of robots differs by industry and region and may play a notable role in exacerbating income inequality in the USA. According to the study, from the period of 1990 to 2007, the addition of one robot per 1000 workers reduced the national employment-to-population ratio by an average of 0.2 percent. Each addition in manufacturing replaced 3.3 workers on a national level and lowered wages by roughly 0.4 percent. The paper further sheds light on the effect of automation on the business dynamics and labor implications in granular detail.

For the study, both the authors, pooled data on 19 industries listed by the International Federation of Robotics (IFR), a Frankfurt-based industry group that keeps comprehensive statistics on robot deployments worldwide. The professors then combined that with U.S.-based data on population, employment, business, and wages from the U.S. Census Bureau, the Bureau of Economic Analysis, and the Bureau of Labor Statistics, among other sources. They expanded their research by comparing robot deployment in the U.S. to that of other countries.

Surprisingly they found that automation figures in the USA lag behind that of Europe. In the period of 1993 to 2007, U.S. firms did introduce almost exactly one new robot per 1,000 workers; in Europe, firms added 1.6 new robots per 1,000 workers. Hence pointing out that despite being advanced in technological areas, it is far behind many countries with advanced economies, on account of industrial robots production and usage and innovation.

In the U.S., the primary adopters of automation were automobile, electronics, plastics and chemical, and metal manufacturing industries. Together these sectors employed 70 percent of robots out of total automation percentage. While automakers contributed to 38 percent of in-use Robots, electronics, plastics, and chemical factored 15% and 10% respectively and 7 percent by metal-based companies. Based on the geographical distinction, Michigan has the highest concentration of workplace robots and employment changes in Detroit, Lansing, and Saginaw than any other commuting zones. While these commuting zones were adversely affected, facing a loss of 6.6 jobs per robot, elsewhere, other industries and citizens were benefitted a lot, thanks to lower goods prices, among other national economic advantages.

Although the scholars did not find any other factor driving unemployment shifts, they did discover the side effects of robots having a direct consequence on income bias. This is because, in such scenarios, it is the low skilled workers and middle-skilled workers who are to bear the weight of it, thus leading to economic and pay differences. This, in turn, proves that automation also has social ramifications other than technological advancement. And this is something that needs immediate attention.

The Bottom Line of Hotel Automation is..well., the Bottom Line! | By Jos Schaap – Hospitality Net

Traditionally, hospitality has been a conservative industry when it comes to technology given that the focus has always been on face-to-face service between staff and guest. The central location for the majority of these interactions has been the front desk (or Front Office (FO) department). COVID-19, however, is changing all of this.

No one knows for sure what the new normal will look like but hotel stays are likely to be a stripped-down affair, particularly in higher-end hotels where personalized service and amenities have long been part of the draw. Step into any hotel lobby now and you'll find aesthetics are taking a backseat - hand sanitizing stations placed every 50 to 100 feet, furniture removed to discourage congregating, social distancing signage displayed throughout, with floors marked to encourage one-way pedestrian flow between entrances and exits. To check in, there is a good chance you may avoid the front desk entirely.

While hotels, in a sweeping effort to boost confidence among wary travelers, have updated their cleanliness procedures during the past few weeks, overall occupancy remains low. Confronted with increasingly squeezed margins, the quest for greater efficiency and healthier revenue becomes ever more pressing. In times of crisis, the first reaction of many businesses is usually to adopt a short-term cash-optimization approach making swift adjustments to their operational and investment strategies. However, cutting expenses can have an adverse effect, creating an unsustainable workload and decreasing guest satisfaction. Alternatively, in spite of the unprecedented challenges presented by coronavirus, hoteliers should look to invest in technology such as automation, which can strengthen business and offer a direct added value to the hotel and their guests.

With coronavirus already resulting in the loss of employment for many within the hospitality industry, it does seem somewhat contradictory to invest in technology that could further eliminate jobs. However, automation does not necessarily equate to the loss of human roles or take authentic service away but rather, complements hotel operations. Automation takes over the repetitive, dull and time-consuming tasks that are such a drain on productivity and staff engagement, freeing up staff to focus on higher value and more fulfilling activities. Similarly, with social distancing likely to become part and parcel of daily life going forward, it is conceivable that there will be a consumer demand shift towards hotels and businesses that adapt to this new technology-driven standard.

For example, pre-COVID guests didn't want to wait in queues when checking-in. When asked what makes a good hotel stay, 90% of millennials said they would be interested in checking-in in a hotel through their mobile phones and skip slow service and long check-in queues in hotel lobbies. Post COVID, this hasn't changed much in - furthermore waiting in a line at check-in now is the very antithesis of social distancing! Smartphones and tablets have become an integral part of our lives and guests want to be self-reliant but with greater expectations of service and personalization. Automated check-in improves the lives of both staff and the guest. Guests have complete autonomy over their check-in allowing them to enter details and provide necessary information online, remotely and at any time prior to arrival, while front desk staff can utilize resources in other areas for greater operational efficiency.

Automation is also a way your guests can upgrade their stay. As demand for rooms is low, hotels will need to maximize the amount of money each guest spends in order to increase profitability. Proactively upselling can make a big impression on the bottom line, no matter the size of the property. As we know too well, many front desk agents skip the upgrade offer because they see it as an imposition rather than a value-add - there are just too many variables. Agents must learn to recognize and anticipate the needs of the guests as well as have the proper product knowledge to make an educated suggestion of a more comfortable room option - a tedious process, if not an almost impossible task resulting in, not surprisingly, a low success rate.

Conversely automated upselling results in a higher conversion rate. Guests are open to buying a more expensive product than they initially planned, as long as it represents good value, is convenient, and feels like it's adding something relevant to their stay. Automated upselling supports the front desk by creating and sending highly targeted offers pre-arrival to guests and letting them decide. As Forbes Contributor Shep Hyken noted, "Can you imagine an accountant trying to do complicated tax work without the aid of a calculator? That's how companies need to think of [automation]. It is an essential tool that will be, if it is not already, not simply a 'nice to have,' but a 'must have' technology".

Another item in hotels that is largely manually and repetitive is room assignment. Depending on the hotel type and rooms available this is almost an impossible task to do, as it is constantly changing. It requires constant attention especially when guests have specific requests. Front desk agents can make assumptions that enable them to hone-in on subsets of requested room categories to find a match, but typically overbooking of some categories arises and fragmentation still occurs. There is no way for an agent to be fully aware of all pending reservation requests or guest requirements when making these decisions. In the end, specific features, amenities or room types requested by the guest won't be fulfilled. Instead of spending hours manually pre-assigning while trying to figure out how to best balance the house, automating room-assignment will satisfy guest demands more accurately while better managing rooms to meet budget and forecast.

The bottom line of automation is, well, the bottom line. Automation doesn't mean the removal of authentic service, but instead a way to focus operational management of the property in a better way by providing choice of service to guests. Automating repetitive laborious processes saves time and allows resources to be diverted elsewhere, letting your staff focus only on interactions where they add value. In a post-COVID world, automation means businesses can unlock more revenue potential, increase guest satisfaction, boost productivity, and remain more agile.

Will coronavirus lead to automation ruling over human interaction? – Open Access Government

Technology has become a necessity rather than just a nice-to-have during the COVID-19 pandemic. Tasks such as shopping for groceries, booking a taxi, or ordering a takeaway have all been made easier thanks to technological advances. Despite its influence on consumer behaviours, one of the perceived downfalls of automation is the limit it has on the reliance for humans to carry out certain tasks and jobs. A debate that has, and will, rage on for quite some time.

But, as the world has been gripped by the COVID-19 pandemic, will automation continue to be a necessity as we enter the new normal and social distancing. Here we look at the role automation could play in the fight against COVID-19 and beyond.

Following the World Health Organisation reclassifying coronavirus as a global pandemic in March, cities and communities effectively turned into ghost towns. Tourist hotspots, restaurants, entertainment venues, and workplaces shut, with people instructed to stay at home.

In the UK, the job retention scheme was introduced to help ease the fears of businesses who were left to wonder how they would pay their staff and stay afloat. Originally set to last until July, the scheme has now been extended to October an indication that economic impacts of the virus will be felt for some time.

As of yet, its unknown as to whether businesses who rely on humans to come to work and carry out manual tasks will survive a post-coronavirus recession. Will it force company bigwigs to invest in automation to boost their chances of longevity and success?

In April, a study carried out by auditing firm, EY, found that nearly half of bosses in 45 countries are speeding up their plans to introduce automation, with companies such as Amazon and Ocado already using robots in customer fulfilment centres. A challenge that car manufacturers face is a reduction in available staff on their shop floors, which comes with health and safety concerns, and the need for new ecosystems to achieve efficient production. This may see a continued turn towards automation to aid the build of new vehicles.

Its almost inevitable that automation across industries will increase, both during and after COVID-19. To what extent is unknown, but it could play a key role in the way we dine at restaurants, check-in to hotels, and everything else in-between.

You may pose the question: How has coronavirus helped the environment?. In the short-term its had a positive impact, with carbon emissions dramatically falling, creating cleaner air in the process. You may have seen flamingos thriving off quieter roads and the cleaner air in Mumbai, and mountain goats making themselves at home in the streets of Llandudno. But, when this is all over, will our attitudes change, or will we just go back to travelling back-and-forward, pumping out carbon emissions and increasing our carbon footprint again?

If businesses must look at automation, will consumers look towards it when they choose their next vehicle, for example? Choosing an electric vehicle over petrol or diesel means you wont need to visit the petrol station to fill up eliminating human interaction. Plus, youll reduce your carbon emissions to zero when driving. If you have worries over social distancing, knowing that you can e-charge your car at home with the right equipment it may sway you towards a greener lifestyle.

Year-to-date data for 2020 from the Society of Motor Manufacturers & Traders reveals a 131% increase in the registration of fully electric cars compared to the year previously. This shows a potential shift towards a more environmentally friendly future, one that introduces an element of automation at the same time. Manufacturers have already acknowledged this, with BMW, for example, being committed to having no less than 12 fully-electric models in their line-up over the next three-to-four years, with the German brand potentially offering an electric version of their 1 Seriesas early as 2021.

Its likely that automation will become more prominent as we move into the future, but striking the correct balance between automation and human interaction could be key in the short-term to enable economies to bounce back and communities to thrive like they did before the pandemic hit.

We are on a journey from automation to autonomy – Livemint

What challenges did the industry face during the coronavirus pandemic, which has necessitated the move to automation?

Never waste a crisis. One of the things the pandemic has shown us is that digital transformation is no longer a nice to have but a must have.

The digital transformation choices that organizations make today as they move from offline to online will help them prepare for a future in which they will need to demonstrate a more holistic outlook, act more transparently and ethically, and deliver hyper-personalized experiences.

We are on a journey from automation to autonomy.

We have seen cars go from manual to automated, with lane change warning or cruise control, and we are now looking at auto park or auto steer.

In much the same way, enterprise processes are also moving from automated to autonomous, and the difference is in automating some components of a process to automating the entire process end-to-end.

Is the existing workforce ready for this change? How much upskilling will be required from the industry?

Given the current situation caused by the pandemic, and the resulting evolution of job functions and requirements, there is a vital need for reskilling.

Executives need to shift their approach to close gaps.

Most estimates say that about 50% of tech skills become redundant every two years.

The successful workforce of the future will bring a trainable and curious mindset.

Workers should not fear artificial intelligence or disruption, but adopt a trainable and continuously curious mindset to prepare for a future of constant skills development and retraining.

The way we learn will also change and businesses will put a greater emphasis on reskilling, upskilling and virtual training.

However, mandated, one-size-fits-all reskilling and training programmes do not enable employees to discover their skills, identify their gaps, and hone their potential through customized knowledge paths and plans.

As companies are also cash-strapped, how do they pay for these new services?

These are times when it is important to keep the total value that you are creating for clients in mind and make sure that you are focused on solving their challenges and opportunities.

If that requires flexibility, thats exactly what we are really good at.

When we went through the global financial crisis many years ago, that is exactly what we did with a certain set of industries. We are doing the same thing with a number of other industries here.

That allows us to create new opportunities, bring in new technologies to actually drive that productivity for our clients, and generate value for them.

As such, it is not necessarily just price concessions straight out of the gate; its actually creating value.

Our exposure to the hardest-hit industries, such as travel, hospitality and leisure and energy, is limited.

We are seeing heightened demand for our solutions in supply chain management, consumer banking collections, small business lending through government support programmes, and analytical services to a range of industries witnessing volatile demand and supply patterns, all of which we have strengthened.

Did the increase in adoption lead to new innovations in the industry?

Disruption creates new opportunities for growth, and businesses across the world should look to, and plan early for, that growth, as we rebound out of this crisis.

We are already seeing new innovations and trends like accelerating cloud journeys, more data-driven insights and digital customer experience.

Twenty years ago, the automotive sector used automation to provide lane-change warnings. Today, it has led to a whole concept of autonomous driving. Similarly, other sectors are also filling gaps with automation as they re-pivot.

Which industries are leading the adoption of automation right now?

Every industry is at a different point in the curve of their evolution, but the pace of change has picked up in every industry.

Across the board, this means that for the first time we are closing books virtually, we are shifting from 50-50 online-retail split to 90-10, and we are managing supply chains through dynamic allocations.

Every single industry is seeing its own path towards automation.

Toyota moves Lexus LS to a higher level of automation – Automotive News

The new technology, marketed as Lexus Teammate, is an outgrowth of the Mobility Teammate concept Toyota has been working on for years.

In a statement last week, Lexus said the new setup will debut in a midcycle freshening of the flagship LS sedan, which also gets new interior flourishes and a smoother, quieter ride.

Toyota signaled last year that it would deploy the technology in a production car in 2020. At that time, James Kuffner, the head of Toyota's automated driving program, said his team aimed to develop the "most powerful supercomputer on wheels."

The technology was prepared by Kuffner's Tokyo-based Toyota Research Institute Advanced Development Inc.

Lexus Teammate, the company said, incorporates artificial intelligence and deep learning "for predicting and responding to various situations possibly encountered."

The updated LS goes on sale in Japan later this year. Lexus declined to give further details about launches in other markets. Lexus Teammate is initially geared toward Japanese laws and regulations.

The system will underpin Toyota's first Level 2 automated vehicle and is expected to use lidar technology developed partly with Denso Corp. That system will enable the Lexus to automatically change lanes, follow lanes and pass vehicles in highway driving.

Pictures of the new LS show black lidar scanners inset behind the front wheel wells, lending the look of brake cooling vents. Other lidar scanners are on the front and rear of the car.

One image depicts a pop-out washer showering the front lidar with two jets of water to keep it clean.

It is unclear whether Lexus Teammate will be offered standard or as an option on certain trims. But the media photos depicted the lidar sensors deployed in the hybrid LS.

Only 12% of Salespeople Believe Automation Will Take Their Job – Small Business Trends

Automation is making a huge impact on small businesses and the workforce as a whole. But salespeople arent generally concerned about losing jobs to automation.

A recent report on the state of retail sales from Raydiant, a digital signage platform for businesses, found that only 12% of retail sales professionals believe that their jobs will be taken by robots in the coming years. In fact, only 13% of the workers who are still employed are currently worried about their job security as their employers emerge from COVID-19 shutdowns.

Basically, these numbers indicate the importance of sales associates in a retail environment. Regardless of the economy and the technology available, a human touch is generally still preferred when attempting to close sales with customers in person. Even if automation is employed in other areas, sales associates believe they will still be needed to make the most of the technology.

Raydiant CEO Bobby Marhamat said in an email to Small Business Trends, Sales associates arent worried about being replaced and they shouldnt be. Throughout history, there have always been doom and gloom headlines about how certain workers will be replaced by technology but the reality is, in most situations, technology ends up being combined with human skills to create new possibilities. That is exactly what we will see here. Sales associates will be empowered by technology to create better experiences and engage more customers.

Raydiants report includes responses from 500 currently-employed sales associates at brick-and-mortar retail locations. Some of the respondents work at large retail chains, while others work at small, independent businesses.

In addition to the interesting notes about automation, the survey also found that 48% of retail workers feel like their employer is taking their health extremely seriously amid the COVID-19 pandemic. And 54.8% of customers feel like the establishments where they shop are taking their health very seriously.

While its undeniable that COVID-19 has made a major impact on the retail industry, these findings show that the importance of professional sales staff may be one element that remains even as the industry shifts. The pandemic may cause more businesses to shift their offerings just as many were already making adjustments due to the rise of online shopping.

But those that stick around post-pandemic are still likely to utilize sales professionals to create an experience that customers will actually remember. Though much has been made about the death of retail and the rise of automation, the idea of creating a positive experience is always important. And individual sales associates can be a big part of that.

Marhamat says, Before COVID, we were very vocal about our belief that despite the headlines, brick and mortar retail was not dying, it was simply evolving. COVID has hit the industry hard but our belief remains as strong as ever.

Smart, forward-looking operators are evolving and realizing that if they want to get customers in the door, they need to give them an experience worth coming leaving their house for. Customers dont want to just buy products, they want to have an experience.

Well trained sales associates play a critical role in creating these in-store experiences.

How will AI and automation impact the role of accountants – Accountancy Today

With the evolution of increasingly sophisticated technology and artificial intelligence (AI) across the UK economy, many businesses are now considering the impact that automation could have on them.

The accountancy profession is no exception. When we recently surveyed UK accountants for their thoughts on the impact of automation and AI, we found that they are generally optimistic about the impact that new technology will have on the profession, with almost one in four accountants (24%) thinking automation and technology will cover all or most of their work within the next five years.

In fact, all respondents surveyed said they believed that at least some portion of accountancy work will be automated within the next five years, while 41% said that they did not expect to be doing the same day-to-day tasks at work in five years time. It is clear that, in some form or another, automation and AI is likely to continue to change the way accountants go about their roles in the coming years.

Saving time by automating repetitive administrative tasks is one of the main benefits that technology is having in the accountancy industry. Cloud accounting and bookkeeping software has already made a huge impact in helping both accountants and their clients to streamline this process and cut down on paper and this will only increase as technology becomes more innovative.

Small simple tasks require paperwork and endless data-entry, and they are the things that often get left to the end of the day or week. Not only does this take up a significant amount of time when workers eventually get around to them, but it can lead to unnecessary levels of stress and boredom.

Almost half (42%) of accountants surveyed said they thought they could save between 1-2 hours per day if their simpler work tasks and processes were automated, one in ten (10%) believed that automation could save them more than 4 hours each day, while just 3% said they didnt think automation would save them any time at all.

Freeing up time with automation is not only beneficial to them but can save a company a huge amount in hours for just one employee over a year. By simply eliminating mundane, time-consuming processes around simple tasks, automation can bring explosive change that truly has the potential to revolutionise accountancy as a profession.

With less time spent on admin and logging data, accountants then have time to focus on other aspects of the job including more consultative work, which will also bring significant benefits to their clients. In fact, the majority of accountants (70%) believe automation will provide them with more time to work with their clients and around half (51%) said that automation would save them from stress or boredom.

Many accountants believe that AI and automation will go a lot further than conducting simple admin tasks. Our poll found that 66% of accountants said they would feel comfortable offering additional advisory services such as financial planning and tax advice, brought about by advances in automation and technology while almost one in ten (8%) accountants would let artificial intelligence make senior management decisions for their practice. Interestingly, more than one in five (21%) said that, if it were possible, they would definitely run their practice without having to meet or deal with clients in person, while 23% said they would either maybe or definitely allow a robot to deal with their clients for them.

Our research suggests that some aspects of financial technology remain underappreciated, since almost three quarters (72%) of respondents said they did not think small business clients understood the concept of Open Banking or the benefits it could bring them. This indicates that more work needs to be done in order to fully inform the small business sector about the benefits that this framework will offer them in coming years.

However, accountants themselves appear to be more optimistic and knowledgeable about the legislation, with two thirds (66%) saying they thought Open Banking will have a positive impact on accountancy over the next five years, while just 3% thought it will have a negative impact.

Its a fairly turbulent time in the accountancy sector right now, with the UK economy in flux due to coronavirus and the fast-approaching end of the Brexit transition period.

Despite this, the insights from our survey show that while many accountants working in the UK today have a positive outlook on the work they do and the services they provide, they are simultaneously preparing to future-proof their careers. Perhaps even more importantly, these new frontiers of technology seem to be eagerly anticipated by those in the profession.

Forward-thinking attitudes will be crucial in shaping the landscape of the accountancy profession for years to come. Accountants who embrace technology to not only help them save time, but offer additional services to those they have done traditionally, are those that will be at the forefront of this recovery.
