Over the Fourth of July weekend, President Trump made a calculated decision to give two incendiary speeches depicting a culture war in America. Painting a dark picture of us versus them, the president exploited our national holiday as an opportunity to defend Confederate symbols that are synonymous with racism.

Trump declared at Mt. Rushmore that efforts to remove Confederate statues wipe out our history, defame our heroes, erase our values. The next night at the White House, he continued, We will never allow an angry mob to tear down our statues, erase our history, indoctrinate our children or trample on our freedoms.

Donald Trump is on the wrong side of history in defending these symbols of hate and emboldening white nationalists, and hes speaking to a dwindling number of supporters. Recent polls indicate that 15 million to 26 million people in the United States have participated in Black Lives Matter demonstrations, making it the largest movement in American history.

Calls for racial justice responding to the murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and too many other Black Americans are not just about statues erected during the Jim Crow era. These statues have become a symbol of the real issue racism and police brutality stemming from the dark legacy of slavery in our country.

Last month, I proudly marched alongside those calling for racial justice in front of the White House. The only history that demonstrators like me are seeking to rectify is that of systemic racism, the symptoms of which were portrayed so blatantly and horrifically when George Floyd was suffocated to death by a police officer.

One step toward reconciling our countrys original sin of slavery is to remove statues of Confederate leaders that serve as shrines for white nationalists. But this is hardly enough to end racism in America, and its not all that protesters are demanding. The Black Lives Matter movement is about transformative change to our laws, systems, policies, and values of those we elect. Its about working to undo racism.

Jewish Americans like me have expressed solidarity with Black activists fighting for racial justice because its consistent with our values. Importantly, partnership between Black and Jewish Americans did not start with the murder of George Floyd or resistance to Donald Trump. It is not defined solely by this moment, nor will it end on November 3.

Our partnership predates the Civil Rights movement and is entrenched in our history and who we are as a people. It reflects our own struggle for freedom throughout history and is exemplified by our values and teachings, which include the concept of pikuach nefesh the primacy and sanctity of human life equality, and the pursuit of justice.

We cannot look away as three-plus years of racism emanating from the White House have opened the wounds of inequality, bigotry and injustice in America targeting communities of color, low-wage families, immigrants and refugees, Muslims and Jews. Since Trump was elected president, hate crime violence has reached a 16-year high according to the FBI, and violent acts of anti-Semitism reached an all-time high last year.

Instead of combating this deeply disturbing trend, Trump has embraced it and appears to be running for re-election on a platform of four more years of hate. In case his speeches werent evidence enough, he recently amplified calls for white power and is even campaigning with merchandise and ads that invoke Nazi symbols.

His campaign just sent a letter to supporters peddling an anti-Semitic conspiracy theory accusing prominent Jewish Democrats of rigging the election, and its not the first time. Trump invoked similar anti-Semitic conspiracy theories in the 2016 election and again in the 2018 midterms.

Jewish Americans have had enough. Over 70% of Jewish voters disapprove of the way Trump has handled the rise of anti-Semitism and nearly the same number feel less secure than they did two years ago, according to a national poll commissioned earlier this year by the non-partisan Jewish Electorate Institute.

Our rising insecurity is directly tied to Trumps emboldening of white nationalists who have targeted our institutions and places of worship. Its also because Trump professes to be protecting the values and freedoms of white nationalists, which are anathema to a majority of Jewish Americans. In his alternate reality, Donald Trump sees himself as the President of the red states as opposed to the United States. He is governing for a small subset of Americans who are white, Christian, and above all else, loyal to him.

The president has repeatedly demonstrated that hes unwilling to serve as a leader for all Americans, and hes made racism and hatred an issue that will drive votes in the 2020 election. The more Trump does to incite his base with bigotry, the more he inspires the rest of the country to support Joe Biden, who rightfully identified this dynamic as the battle for the soul of our nation after neo-Nazis marched in Charlottesville three years ago. This battle rages on today, and those of us fighting for racial justice, equality and an end to bigotry will take our fight straight to the voting booth.

The majority of Jewish Americans are fighting for Black lives, just as were fighting for an end to anti-Semitism, and well soon have the chance to translate our advocacy into votes. What is happening in our country under Donald Trump is a far cry from the values imparted by our religion and others, and it must change.

Its because of our values that many Jewish voters are compelled to take action to ensure that Trump and hatred he incites are defeated in November.

The world’s top 50 thinkers 2020 – Prospect

Rich Fairhead/Prospect

There is nothing like an emergency to make you realise the value of practical ideas. When the chips are down, and death rates are up, the world wants answersespecially from its sharpest thinkers.

As Prospect revisits the task of identifying the leading minds of the moment, in the intellectual hit parade which we have produced in varying formats since 2004, that test of immediate and real-world relevance looms large. As we compiled our longlistdrawing on the advice of distinguished experts in various fields who have written for us over the yearsand then whittled it down towards 50, we were struck by how different the list looked from 2019s. It was at the point where we had around 35 confirmed names that we noticed not one of them was a holdover.

A measure of churn was expectedwe put a premium on new books and recent interventions, after allbut not a wholesale changing of the guard. Having previously been sceptical of those claims that Covid-19 would change everythingwhy would it?I suddenly felt there was something in them. We decided to make a virtue of the disruption, and produce an entirely new list for a shaken world that is beginning to reset.

The immediate relevance of some of our thinkers to the Covid-19 era speaks for itself: vaccinologist Sarah Gilbert and science writer Ed Yong being prime examples. Just as interesting, however, are those who work in fields a mile away from medicine, but who have nonetheless acquired a new salience in the dark and peculiar circumstances of 2020.

In economics, after the sudden stop followed by all the stimulus and bailouts, we are plainly going to need to talk about debt. Having something to say on that helps two of our big brainsStephanie Kelton and Thomas Pikettyearn a place on the list. In public policy, with a staggering proportion of the workforce furloughed, there is a sense that the hour of the godfather of the Universal Basic Income movement, Philippe Van Parijs, might at last have come. Likewise, the polymathic thoughts of Ari Ezra Waldman on the problems of privacy in a digital age rocket up the agenda when governments everywhere are grappling with intrusive track-and-trace schemes. And in politics, while New Zealands prime minister Jacinda Ardern had already shown creativity in developing a governing ethos of kindness, it always sounded rather airyuntil she showed how it could be put to practical effect in the coronavirus context, and achieved some of the worlds best results.

So all-encompassing has been the disruption that many varied and otherwise unrelated minds have found new ways to shine: Sally Rooney moved from the page to the TV screen, and kept us culturally (and tearfully) engaged in lockdown; Eric Yuan Zoomed in from relative obscurity as his video platform became the virtual meeting room, as well as the substitute pub.

Othermore enduringimplications will eventually flow from the chance the lockdown gave us to reset. In the arts, different sorts of names come to the fore: names like Jenny Odell, for example, who uses discarded everyday objects to invite mindful meditation on the transience of our day-to-day lives and how they this fit (or dont fit) with nature.

This year we have produced an entirely new list for a shaken world that is beginning to reset

Spending time away from the usual bustle, and perhaps in the garden, has raised environmental consciousness. So, too, has the jolt to reflect afresh on how all the life, health and happiness that civilisation affords hangs by a thread. We duly hail all manner of minds that engage with ecology, whether that be through the critical thinking of Timothy Morton, the rigorous popularisation of David Attenborough or Carlota Perezs thoughts on how the economy can be steered in a greener direction as it splutters back into life.

A spell of enforced solitude will also turn the mind to the question of who we really areand prompt it to interrogate all the old stories about where we come from. Although it was catalysed by police brutality in the US, it may be no coincidence that the history wars over statue-toppling took hold this year. Thaddeus Metz, Angela Saini, Cornell West, Olivette Otele and William Dalrymple are all top thinkers with things to say about the many warped consequences that can result from one culture subjugating another; Ross Douthat, meanwhile, is a thoughtful conservative voice who cautions us against allowing frenzied arguments about identity to silence discussion.

There are some names here whose special interest it would be contrived to put down to Covid-19. But even herecoming back to my starting pointamid a mood of anxious uncertainty, they have to earn their place by way of practical relevance, even if that is relevance to the big contemporary challenges that existed before the virus. Challenges like, say, the rise of China (Julia Lovell), the decline of the west (Anne Applebaum), the politics of personality (Hilary Mantel) or the twin threats to the rule of law and sound constitutional governance (Bruce Ackerman, Dahlia Lithwick, Philippe Sands).

The diversity of the list is rich. It contains a preponderance of women for the first time ever, and pleasingly mixes brilliant young minds (Lisa Piccirillo) with a couple of nonagenarians.

While it also includes a good mix of liberal, socialist and conservative voices, I can anticipate one objection in the absence of any thinker who can truly be said to have emerged from within the global populist insurgency associated with Donald Trump. We have thought long and hard about this. We have run and will continue to run pieces by nostalgic writers who reject globalisation. We make space for serious minds who rage about all the communities it has left behind (see Paul Collier). But as the Trumpian project becomes ever-more nakedly anti-intellectual and anti-reason, we struggle to regard even intelligent individuals who choose to defend it as serious thinkers. Some readers may take a different view, and see more substance in nativism. But for me, Steve Bannon and his like are cynics; the value of ideas for them is purely instrumental, for use in power play.

With that one caveat, the mix is something to marvel at. The range of intellectual endeavours is a reminder of the breadth of human genius. I hope youll enjoy finding out more about the thinkers who strike us as most pertinent to our age as much as we on the inside of Prospect did. Salute them and take the chance to cast a vote (details at the end of the package) to help crown a top thinker for 2020. Well publish the full results in our next issue. Oh, and please dont miss the chance to tell us who we missedtheres a space on the voting form. Because with the liveliest minds and the biggest questions, there is never a final answer. Long may human beings continue to discuss, disagreeand think!

Tom Clark is editor of Prospect

Bruce Ackerman

The turbulence of the last few years will eventually settlebut into what? The shape of tomorrows politics depends on how this moment constitutionalises. If Boris Johnsons prorogation wheeze sets a precedent, or Donald Trumps judicial bench-packing continues much longer, liberal democracy is in trouble. Its defenders need to swot up on how constitutions can go wrongand right. Bruce Ackerman, a Yale professor whos just as informed on De Gaulle, Mandela and Waesa as he is on Americas founders, is a sure guide. His popular sovereignty initiative to rationalise the process for amending the US constitution could put principled reformers back on the front foot.

Elizabeth Anderson

She started out in economics before abandoning a field she had come to view as ethically barren, and has since combined philosophy with the social sciences to analyse the power structures around usand, as an excited New Yorker puts it, redefine equality. Her interest in race and gender is urgently relevant in 2020, and her refreshing take on the Protestant work ethic (which she insists has a progressive pro-labour side as well as a conservative materialism) underpins a powerful account of modern workplace relations. Always confronting the world as it truly is rather than how we would like it to be, she won a MacArthur genius grant in 2019.

Anne Applebaum

The American international order is crumbling. Its opponents always suspected it was mere cover for US imperialism, and the sudden swerve of many former enthusiasts to support the narrow chauvinism of Trumps America First slogan encourages that dark view. Applebaum, long an authority on the abuses of Communist and post-Communist Eastern Europe, in her new book Twilight of Democracy is unsparing in exposing the moral bankruptcy of Trumpian Republicanism. Her sharp pen is as persuasive as any in presenting the idea of the west as a morally serious projectand one whose loss we may come to mourn.

Jacinda Ardern

By bringing her baby to the UN General Assembly she grabbed the worlds attention, but over three years in office Ardern has proved to be more than a media favourite. Her ethos of kindness sounded a vague way to transcend neoliberalism, but shes steadily shown what it means in fields from child welfare to the environment. Her instinctive, bridge-building leadership after the Christchurch mosque massacre was an inspiration. And her Covid-19 strategydevised in lockstep with chief scientist Juliet Gerrardbuilt with intelligence and empathy on a foundation of unflinching honesty to achieve some of the worlds best results.

David Attenborough

Not all climate-change activists are Swedish teenagers. At 94, David Attenborough is one of the countrysif not the worldsmost influential thinkers on the environment. Just as the Extinction Rebellion protests were taking off last year, Attenborough presented the hour-long documentary Climate Change: The Facts, which relied on his authority to convey the truth about what were doing to the planet. For decades his documentaries have alerted millions to the precious wonders of the animal and plant kingdoms, and the threat that humans pose to them. No longer confined to the BBC, his eight-part Netflix series Our Planet brought him even closer to truly global domination.

William Dalrymple

The Scottish historian, long resident in India, has made it his lifes work to reckon with the legacy of the British Empire in the subcontinent. His recent book The Anarchy is a barnstorming account of the East India Company, the corporation that launched the hostile takeover. Dalrymple describes Robert Clivewhose newly-controversial statue remains next to the Foreign Officeas a man of extreme aggression and devil-may-care-audacity. But Dalrymple also points to Indian complicity with the British, as well as to the many atrocities of local princes. In polarised times, in which one side acquits the Empire of its crimes, and the other blames imperialism for every last human wickedness, his work is an important corrective.

Jared Diamond

Twenty-three years ago in Guns, Germs and Steel, the polyglot professor (whose scholarship has ranged from human physiology to ornithology and anthropology) drew our attention to how far disease had shaped world civilisations. In Upheaval last year, he looked at how societies can recover from catastrophes such as invasion, political collapse or mass death. Just as individuals need to develop strategies of resilience, he argues, so too should countries. The challenge, for nations as for individuals in crisis, is to figure out which parts of their identities are already functioning well and dont need changing, and which parts are no longer working and do need changing. Within months, Covid-19 made his argument urgent.

Ross Douthat

The opinion pages of the New York Times have become a battleground in the culture wars. In June, a Republican senators provocative call to Send in the troops on Black Lives Matter protesters caused a newsroom revolt. The most eloquent conservative voice in the NYT is Ross Douthat, whose cogent analysis of the farrago was a qualified defence of the papers liberal valuesstrident, even unpalatable views need to be aired, he argued. Douthat, a traditional Catholic, is also a critic of modern secularism, as he argues in his new book The Decadent Society. But he is no fan of the US president. In a recent op-ed, he argued that Trump will be an accelerant of the rights erasure, an agent of its marginalisation and defeat.

Esther Duflo

Economics is often caricatured as being more interested in pounds than people and derided for getting lost in theoretical dead-ends. This Frenchwoman rescues the discipline from both charges. Duflo applies randomised trials to urgent policy questions with huge human significance in the developing worldquestions such as how to encourage decent basic education, keep malaria at bay and, pertinently for our Covid-19 world, boost vaccine take-up. (She suggests incentives as modest as a bag of lentils.) At just 46 when she claimed the Nobel Prize in economics last yeartogether with husband and co-author Abhijit Banerjee, and Michael Kremershe is an exceptionally young but richly deserving winner.

David Frum

Although still registered as a big-R Republican, David Frum is much less interested in party politics than little-R republicanismhis concern is the spirit of American democracy and the health of its republic. In his journalism the former George W Bush speechwriter has, from early on, been one of the clearest-sighted conservative critics of Trumphis personal lack of principle and venality, certainly, but also his potential to trash the standing of his office and the possibility of compromise. Frums biggest worry, outlined in his book Trumpocalypse, is less the disastrous 45th president winning in November than his political poison lingering for many years after his defeat.

Greta Gerwig

Originally known as a Hollywood actress and muse to Marriage Story director and partner Noah Baumbach, Gerwig has since proven herself to be a masterly screenwriter and director. Her 2017 coming-of-age drama Lady Bird won universal critical acclaim. That led to her most recent project adapting Louisa May Alcotts classic novel Little Women for the big screen. At a time when everyone has been locked down with family, her work invites searching questions about our closest relationships. Her snubbing in Hollywoods recent awards season attests to stubborn sexism in the industry, but the success of her films shows that things are changing.

Sarah Gilbert

Decades of work on malaria, flu and then Mers readied this Oxford vaccinologist to do battle with the new coronavirus pandemic. Just as important was the preparatory thinking she had done about how to handle an unknown potential disease X, and the way she has galvanised her team. Moving beyond the old reliance on antibody responses, she pursues a proactive approach to vaccine designtapping recombinant DNA techniques and homing in on T-cell responses. With safe-to-handle viral vectors speeding research, Gilbert energetically seeks a smart way through the slow protocols of academic medicine to speed up the application. Her work couldwith lucklead to a successful inoculation programme within months.

Ruth Wilson Gilmore

Could we live in a world without prisons? For lifelong abolitionist Ruth Wilson Gilmore the answer is an emphatic yes. A seasoned campaigner against the prison-industrial complex, who now works in academia, Gilmore has spent the best part of 30 years developing the field of carceral geography: the study of the interrelationships across space, institutions and political economy that shape and define modern incarceration. Shes helped shift the conversation about responses to crime from one of punishment to rehabilitation. As the failings of the US justice system come once again to the fore, Gilmores radical ideas have never felt more relevant.

Jrgen Habermas

Having come of age listening to the Nuremberg trials, Habermas, now 91, has always been seized by the urgency of defending fundamental notions like an open public sphere and the idea of truth, through post-modern decades during which the academy grew complacent and self-indulgent. The last of the generation of Rawls and Foucault, both of whom he sparred with, his breathtaking range is on show in a new history of philosophy. Despite warning that a post-truth democracy would no longer be a democracy, in dark times he still retains faith in the ability of human discussion to advance the common good.

Martin Hgglund

Can you lead a spiritual life without being religious? The Swedish atheist thinker takes up the challenge in his book This Life. For Hgglund, the meaning of existence does not lie in an imaginary afterlife but in the fact of death: the apprehension that we will die makes meaningful the question of what we do with our time on earth. Erudite and provocative, Hgglunds philosophy aims to plug the God-shaped hole gap in the lives of atheists, and has become more relevant as death once more stalks the developed western world. The Prospect review of his book wondered, though, whether the questions he asks have really been as foreign to religious thinking as he imagines.

NK Jemisin

Science-fiction writer NK Jemisin broke records when all three novels in her Broken Earth trilogy won a prestigious Hugo Award for best novel between 2016 and 2018. Her work creates a fully-imagined universe to explore some of the great themes of our timesclimate change, racial oppression and split identities. Jemisin, remarkably the first African American to win the Hugo, has criticised the publishing industry for not being diverse enough in genre fiction. Her new novel, The City We Became, is a love letter to a New York under threat from alien invasion.

Bong Joon-Ho

The South Korean filmmaker captured headlinesand hearts and mindswhen he swept this years Oscars. He won four trophies, including best director and best picture for Parasite, an upstairs-downstairs tale about a poor family meeting a rich one. Bongs cinemawhich also includes dystopian train drama Snowpiercer and Netflixs Okjahas long dealt with class conflict and the problems of contemporary capitalism, mixing the political with a playful mastery of tone and genre. In an industry dominated by superhero blockbusters, Bongs global success proves there is widespread appetite for something new.

Stephanie Kelton

Respectable monetary policy died when central banks turned to the printing presses to battle the Great Recession, pursuing so-called Quantitative Easing (QE). Will the Covid-19 crisis see fiscal policy go the same way? Stephanie Kelton hopes so and is finding an audiencenot only because theres little appetite for more austerity. With interest rates and inflation on the floor, its harder to argue that governments directly creating money for social programmes would necessarily spell ruin. But a free lunch today will mean inflation tomorrow warn respectable economistsincluding some Keynesians. Like Keynes himself, though, Kelton resets the frame and goads conventional wisdom.

Igor Levit

At just 33 years old, Russian-German pianist Igor Levit is a superstar interpreter of the classical canonhis complete Beethoven Sonatas came out earlier this year. Hes also unafraid of political gestures: at the 2017 Proms he played Ode to Joy, the European national anthem, in what was seen as a riposte to Brexit. In lockdown, he has pioneered live-streaming concerts on Twitter, dressed down in jeans and T-shirt, with explanations in German and English beforehand. (Check out his performance of Schuberts late B-Flat Sonata.) Few others have done as much to democratise classical music while still maintaining the highest of standards.

Dahlia Lithwick

Lithwick is the outstanding scrutineer of the US Supreme Court, but qualifies as a true world thinker because of her subtle and penetrating analysis of the rule of law. Should Novembers election descend into foul play and end up thrown over to the courts (like Bush vs Gore in 2000) Lithwick will be a must-read. But she qualifies as a true world thinker because of her subtle and penetrating take on the rule of law. She has written, including in Prospect, on how that ideal consists as much in a web of mores and codes as it does in any procedure or chain of command. Trump violates these, but soincreasinglydo other rulers on a planet where political corruption could become a second pandemic.

Julia Lovell

Rejecting earlier revisionism, Chinas Xi Jinping has ruled that the Mao years and the reorientation towards state capitalism that followed are all one glorious chapter in the nations history. With China risen, does that make the brutal revolutionary newly-relevant not just at home, but also across the world? As Cambridge historian Lovell describes in her fine book Maoism: A Global History, the after-effects of his ideology spread across the planet, from Vietnam to Zanzibar. Also the author of a superb account of the Opium Wars, Lovell is an acute observer of the way history is used and abused by current regimes. Xi is no sincere believer in the dictums of Maos Little Red Book, but he does admireand emulatehis authoritarian power play.

Hilary Mantel

One of the most acute analysts of the 21st centurys often alarmingly personal politics is a novelist writing about Tudor England. In the concluding part of her Wolf Hall trilogy, The Mirror and the Light, Mantel continues her investigation into Thomas Cromwell, a canny practitioner of Machiavellian statecraft who attempted to align England with the Protestant princely states in Europe. That, as much as Henry VIIIs unpredictable sexual tastes, was the reason Cromwells career eventually unravelled. Mantel is also an eagle-eyed observer of the current royal family: her famous lecture on the Duchess of Cambridge is one of the works collected in a forthcoming collection, entitled Mantel Pieces.

Helen McCarthy

The deepest assumptions shape day-to-day life without us noticing. Take a longer view, and you can spot themand grasp how they can change. McCarthys work exposes the oppressive power of the housewife ideal. Many mothers have long been in paid employment, but in the years between commonplace domestic servants and ubiquitous domestic appliances, they were vilified for falling short as angels in the house. Only in the last 40 years, with the help of nurseries and other childcare, have working mothers ceased to be deemed aberrant. In the lockdown, all responsibility for children was thrown back to parents, and reports suggest the burden was unequally sharedunderlining the enduring power of the tropes McCarthy identifies.

Thaddeus Metz

This professor of philosophy at the University of Johannesburg is reimagining what it might mean to teach his subject in an African context. As well as the traditional syllabus (Plato etc), Metz has championed native African philosophy as an object of equal worth to study. He has defended the idea of a distinctive African moral theory based on ubuntu, one which values harmonious relationships and human solidarity. It should, he argues, be taken just as seriously as the work of Kant or utilitarianism. That Metz is a white American makes the project, often described as decolonising the curriculum, all the more intriguing.

Branko Milanovi

Bean-counting can narrow horizons, but not for this Serbian-American number cruncher. Inequality used to be measured country-by-country, but he has pioneered analysis of the global income distribution, which he likens to an elephant, with a high back (fast wage-rises in mid-table China), low head (squeezed working-class wages in the west) and a rising trunk (the runaway pay of the pre-financial crisis global elite). Unlike many leftists, he diagnoses no general crisis of capitalism, instead focusing on its varieties, and the surprising way the restless insecurity of Chinas political economy works to bolster growth. As Covid-19 accelerates Chinas eclipse of the US, he is an indispensable guide.

Timothy Morton

Living in the Anthropocene turns out to require a new, less anthropocentric, vocabulary. Mortonan English professor at Rice University, Houstonprovides one. A proponent of object-oriented ontology (OOO), Morton argues that nature or the environment does not, in fact, exist as we think of it, as something separate from or encompassing of civilisation. He suggests instead that all objects, from rocks to trees, live in equal and interdependent co-existence with humans. Counting singer Bjrk, artist Olafur Eliasson and curator and critic Hans Ulrich Obrist among his fans and collaborators, he is exerting a rare and a far-reaching impact on our intellectual and cultural imagination.

Jenny Odell

ACalifornian whose exhibitions have spotlighted objects discarded at landfills and the manufacturing roots of our everyday items, Odell calls us to observe the commonplacewith undivided attention. Her interests culminated in How to Do Nothing, a bestseller about the pleasures of resisting Big Techs commodification of our attention spans. Its a philosophical meditation on what it means to live mindfully with nature at a time when powerful corporations want us to do anything but. When billions were suddenly confined to their homes this year (with nothing but social media to connect them with others), the need to rediscover how to be content doing nothing became self-evident.

Olivette Otele

Born in Cameroon and raised in France, Olivette Otele was appointed professor of the history of slavery at Bristol University last autumnhaving become, at Bath Spa, the UKs first black female history professor just the year before. She has been a keen analyst of Bristols impassioned debate over its long associations with slavery. In reaction to the pulling down of Edward Colstons statue, she wrote, many other slave traders are still celebrated in Bristol, while poverty, racism and all forms of inequalities are, more than ever, in urgent need of being tackled. Her book African Europeans: An Untold Story will be published this October.

Two new cases of COVID-19 in Grand Bahama – Bahamas Tribune

The Ministry of Health announced on Monday that there are two new confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Grand Bahama.

The new cases are a 33-year-old woman and a 52-year-old man.

Neither case has a history of travel and both are in isolation at home.

There have been 113 confirmed cases in total with nine of those active.

Health officials are reminding the public to practice the following measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19:

Wear a face mask when you leave home;

Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, and if soap and waterare not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 70% alcohol;

Cover your cough or sneeze in your inner elbow or with a tissue; and

Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces such as phones, remotes controls, counters, doorknobs, and keyboards.

Two new cases of COVID-19 in Grand Bahama - Bahamas Tribune

Mixed reaction to beach closures – EyeWitness News

NASSAU, BAHAMAS Prime Minister Dr Hubert Minnis decision to close beaches on New Providence, Paradise Island and Grand Bahama over the Independence holiday weekend received a flurry of mixed reactions from the public on social media yesterday.

While many were outraged and strongly criticized the decision and the government, others defended the move.

The closure of beaches and parks will take effect Thursday at 10pm, until 5am next Monday, July 13.

As he addressed Parliament, the prime minister underscored the ongoing surge of new infections in the US, particularly Florida, Texas and Arizona.

He said the government was aware of what may have contributed to some of the surge.

Yesterday, Tee Moss, a New Providence resident, said the Bahamian government appeared to be piggybacking off the US policies when the population and case rates in the US and The Bahamas were vastly different.

We have just gotten the beaches back and now you play with us like kids, putting us on time out, he said.

This is a nation of free citizens, not your children.

its time to go jack. I dont know who is voting FNM, but only a dog would be that [expletive].

Due to the rising cases in the US, the fourth of July celebrations were cancelled and some beaches in Florida, California and Texas closed in an effort to discourage large crowds.

Rochelle Sturrup added: So the virus [go] up on the beach on Independence then? You want to talk about surge in numbers in Florida to justify this [expletive], but the surge in numbers didnt matter on July 1 when you reopened for international flights.

Jemeka Wilkinson said it was counterintuitive to open the borders to visitors, particularly Americans who are experiencing surges of cases of COVID in their jurisdiction, if the government wished to mitigate risks.

The resumption of commercial carriers into The Bahamas occurred on July 1.

Beaches reopened on June 29.

Wilkinson said it was absurd the rights of the Bahamian people were being yanked around.

While I get there are some who will break the law, there are many doing the right thing suffering, she said.

However, Beatrice Clarke said Bahamians were ungrateful.

She said those lashing the prime minister do not understand the issues at hand.

Take a look at the United States and what they are going through all because the [masses] wanted to go on the beaches, Clarke said.

Keep yall virus in yall household and stay [your] [expletive] home.

Kenneth Richie agreed.

He said a leader must lead and expressed support for the decision to close the beach as a help toward the public being responsible in our movement.

Bradford Roker-Saunders said the decision was about managing risks.

Our recent behavior suggests that we will not follow social distancing rules, so [expletive] off the beaches. We cannot arrest and fine thousands, so this is the best option.

Others labelled the prime minister an emperor and dictator.

The dictator is now the emperor and The Bahamas is officially a police state, said Joseph Ferguson, adding that there was nothing that could be done about it.

Curtis Reno asserted the decision appeared to be prejudicial.

The beaches are only closed to black Bahamian population who use the regular beaches, he said.

The beaches over Paradise Island the hotels tourists and gated communities will be enjoying our beaches.

This emergency order, lockdowns, are no longer about COVID.

Its about a police state stripping away our rights.

Antoine Wallace said with high summer temperatures, the move was unthinkable.

He opined the rights of Bahamians were being stifled and taken away.

What is the medical justification for this madness, he continued.

Which country opens up its borders in a state of emergency?

My God, it is our countrys Independence.

This nonsense must stop. Stand up Bahamians. Stand up for your rights.

Stacey Smith charged that without a new case in over three weeks, and no COVID-19-related deaths since April, there was no reason to close the beaches.

There have been no few infections in New Providence in 22 days, Grand Bahama in 61 days and Bimini in 51 days.

As of yesterday, the total number of cases remained at 104.

However, only four cases remain active.

Health officials said last month the curve of the virus had been flattened, and while cases could appear in clusters, community spread had been curbed.

Operation Sovereign Bahamas takes to the streets – Bahamas Tribune

By TANYA SMITH-CARTWRIGHT

tsmith-cartwright@tribunemedia.net

OPERATION Sovereign Bahamas held a march through the streets of New Providence on Independence Day over a myriad of issues.

The march, organised by a team including former radio talk show host Adrian Francis and attorney Maria Daxon, called for no more lies and a change to the system.

Paul Rolle, the man who was arrested last week for protesting in front of the Queen Victoria and Christopher Columbus statues, was also an organiser of the march. His attorney, Ms Daxon, feels that he was deliberately arrested on bogus charges to prevent him from attending the march.

My client is still in custody and he is now charged with threats of violence, Ms Daxon said. He was to be charged with trespassing (initially). They changed the charge. He is going to court tomorrow (Monday). This is yet another bogus charge. My team of lawyers are laughing at this as we want to know who these threats of violence are against. Who, Christopher Columbus statue?

My client was to be involved with the march we had on Independence Day. He was a part of our team. They arrested him because they didnt want him to be on the march, she claimed. They knew he was a part of our team. They know he is very strong-willed. They dont trust us. We are the problem as far as they are concerned. . .

Her client, who has been detained since last Wednesday, remains in custody at the Wulff Road Police Station. Ms Daxon thinks police intentionally detained him, knowing a holiday weekend was coming up and the next sitting of court would be Monday.

Meanwhile, the small group of protestors is demanding, among other things, the resignation of the entire Cabinet for its blatant deceit of the Bahamian people and the return to governing by the Constitution; immigration reform; an investigation into Hurricane Dorian victims and the complete disclosure of all related expenditures in Abaco and Grand Bahama; and an investigation into the oil spill in East Grand Bahama. The group is also protesting ill treatment of ordinary Bahamians by the judiciary and police.

The things that really have us concerned is that the things really belong to us but no one is telling us that truth, Mr Francis said. No one is transparent and candid enough about what is ours. So the people are tired of being lied to. We believe that there is a new order and a new day coming in the country. That new day starts now. The march represents a revolution. A period where people have decided that from 1967 until now weve gone backwards.

So we are going to take back our economy, take back our people, take back our direction. The future (of) our country is right now at stake so we march to save the future of the country. So its about people deciding that because of all that they have gone through thats enough! Enough is enough! No more lies!

Counterpoint: Religious Liberty Scores a Win at the Supreme Court, and It’s About Time – InsideSources

Editors Note: For another viewpoint, see Point: Supreme Courts Decision Is the Opposite of Religious Freedom

In a year beset by disappointing decisions from the Supreme Court, a trio of religious liberty cases decided this term provides constitutionalists with some hope.

Little Sisters of the Poor v. Pennsylvania

The Little Sisters of the Poor need no introduction. This order of female Catholic religious has been serving the elderly in 30 countries for over 175 years. Although the Little Sisters seem like an unlikely target, the order has been in the cross-hairs of one government or another for nearly a decade.

This week, in a 7-2 decision written by Justice Clarence Thomas, the Supreme Court held that the federal government had the authority to exempt the Little Sisters from its birth control mandate.

Sadly, the legal battle may not be at an end for the Little Sisters. The case likely will go forward on other grounds, but the court strongly implied that the Religious Freedom and Restoration Act (RFRA) would operate to protect the conscience rights of the Little Sisters.

That statute, the court explained, provide[s] very broad protection for religious liberty. It forbids the government from substantially burdening a persons exercise of religion unless the government can demonstrate that there is no less restrictive means by which it can further a compelling government interest.

The contraceptive mandate clearly fails RFRAs test. Certainly, there are other ways the government can provide contraceptives without forcing nuns to do so.

Espinoza v. Montana

InEspinoza v. Montana, the Supreme Court reaffirmed the fundamental right of families to send their children to the school of their choice, including religious schools. By a vote of 5 to 4, the court held that a state program to help families cover the cost of private school may not discriminate against schools with religious missions.

At issue in the case was a modest Montana program that granted tax credits for donations to organizations that awarded private-school tuition scholarships. The Montana Supreme Court held that the states Blaine Amendment forbade Montana from providing the tax credits to parents who chose a religious school.

The Supreme Court reversed the decision. The court held that Montanas Blaine Amendment discriminated against religious schools and the families whose children attend them. In an opinion written by Chief Justice Roberts, the court held that the Free Exercise Clause protects religious observers against unequal treatment.

Montana had discriminated on the basis of a schools religious status, plain and simple. The courts decision strongly suggests that the Blaine Amendments remaining in 35 states are constitutionally infirm, and may not be used to discriminate against religious schools.

Our Lady of Guadalupe v. Morrissey-Berru

In Our Lady of Guadalupe, the court held that the First Amendment bars courts from intervening in employment disputes involving teachers at religious schools. Writing for the Court Justice Alito stated that the First Amendment protects church autonomy including the right of religious institutions to decide matters of faith and doctrine without government intrusion.

This protection, Justice Alito noted, was crucial to the Framers of our Constitution the British Crown, for example, had the right to fill religious offices and to otherwise control religion. As applied to schools, the court recognized that teachers who are entrusted with inculcating religious values and beliefs are ministers of the faith, even though they are not formally ordained.

As such, the government may not interfere with a religious schools decision to hire or fire such an employee.

As Alito recognized, parents choose to send their children to religious schools for religious education and formation. Thus, a narrow interpretation of the ministerial exception would have interfered with the ability of parents to raise their children with a distinctly religious education.

In short, teachers at religious schools play a critical role in transmitting the faith to the next generation and are properly categorized as ministers.

Conclusion

Justice Thomas has famously lamented that the Free Exercise Clause seems to rest precariously on the lowest rung of the Courts ladder of rights. With its trifecta of religious liberty decisions this term, the Supreme Court may finally be poised to give equal weight to religious liberty.

Its about time.

Protesters Want Police To Rethink Moving Back To East Liberty – 90.5 WESA

More than six weeks after George Floyd was killed under the knee of a Minneapolis police officer, protests in Pittsburgh continued to call for sweeping changes to the Pittsburgh Bureau of Police and an end to systemic racism.

Hundreds gathered in East Liberty Monday afternoon at the former Zone 5 police station in East Liberty, which protesters say the police department plans to reoccupy and marched throughout East Liberty and Friendship to protest the move, and to call on city officials to defund the police.

There is still a lot of high-end development thats going on in this city. We still have this divide in Penn Avenue," organizer Randall Taylor said. "On one side of the street are upscale businesses and on the other side of the street are businesses that cater primarily to an African American consumer.

Taylor believes that returning the police station to the area will make things worse, pushing even more Black people out by making them feel too uncomfortable to live, travel through or shop in the neighborhood.

When you have more police presence, youre going to have more interactions with police, and when you have more interactions, that's going to lead to more arrests and other unpleasant things, he said.

Taylor envisions a new use for the Zone 5 station.

We need to convert that police station into a peace station, p-e-a-c-e, and talk about how to use that space to create a stronger community, he said.

Protesters also wanted to protect themselves and one another from contracting COVID-19. In attempts to do so, organizers did several 6-feet checks and asked protesters to spread out from one another. Everyone wore masks.

A public safety spokesperson could not be reached for comment about the departments plans for moving back to the East Liberty station. A leaky roof and sewer problems at the North Euclid Ave. station prompted the police to move to another building on Washington Blvd in 2007, according to reporting from the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. The building was shared with firefighters who moved out last summer for repairs, according to a police press release.

But East Liberty has undergone massive changes since the building was last used -- and the dialogue over policing has shifted across the country in the past few months.

Pittsburgh needs to make changes, said Nique Craft, one of the leaders of a Monday protest. This is a civil rights movement for a lot of us and it is important. You dont do this because you have time off of work. You do it because you mean it.

Liberty’s Oliver proving a worthy successor to his local legend father – The Bakersfield Californian

Jason Oliver Jr. knows what it means anytime he sees "the look."

Oliver, who carved out a starting cornerback role in his sophomore season at Liberty High School last fall, rarely needs to be told when he's made a mistake, as confirmation tends to come via a single sideline glance from his father Jason Sr., who coaches the team's defensive backs and receivers.

"If I make a mistake, its to a point where we just have a look and we know what I did wrong," Jason Jr. said. "I just look at him and we can fix it.

Jason Sr. said this almost telepathic relationship formed through years of running drills on the practice field and the backyard, where he's attempted to fine-tune every aspect of his son's game.

"It's so many hours put in to the point where we've grounded it in," Jason Sr. said. "I can just look at him and right away, he knows 'Ok, technique right here broke down.'"

While the father-son pair's commitment to grinding out drills likely isn't a surprise to many in Kern County, the elder Oliver says this path wasn't always preordained for his son.

A star at Bakersfield High School in the late 80s, Oliver's stature in the local football community only grew after a run at USC, where he recorded 11 career interceptions as a defensive back from 1990-93.

But when he and wife Nicole had a son in 2004, Jason Sr., whose birth name is Durant Jason Oliver, wanted to carry on his name without putting any pressure on his child to follow in his gridiron footsteps.

By slightly altering the name, the couple hoped people wouldn't instantly associate son Jason Durant Oliver with his father's on-field accomplishments. The plan didn't work.

"I didn't want to make him a junior like that, because what if he doesn't want to play football?" Jason Sr. said. "But everybody specifically switched his name to make him a junior. I kind of doomed him with that."

The younger Oliver needed little convincing to take the field himself, though, with his dad saying he began asking to go through workouts "while he still had Pull-Ups on."

Entering high school with hopes of landing a Division-I scholarship, Jason Jr. put himself in position to achieve that goal during a sophomore season where he played a key role on a Liberty defense that allowed seven or fewer points in six of 12 games.

He recorded two interceptions on the year, the biggest coming in the SWYL opener against Centennial. With the Golden Hawks down 14-7 and 11 yards away from tying the game in the third quarter, Oliver jumped a route in the end zone to return the momentum to the Patriots, who went on to win 17-7en route to a third consecutive unbeaten run in league play.

That early progress has already caught the attention of a Pac-12 program. In May, just weeks before his 16th birthday, Jason Jr. was elated and surprised to receive his first offer from Utah, a program that had three DBs selected in the first three rounds of the 2020 NFL Draft.

"That was so awesome, but I was definitely surprised I got that offer so early," he said. "I had my mom sitting right next to me and I was the happiest kid in the world."

With two years until college begins, Jason Jr. is hoping to further boost his stock in the coming seasons. Listed at just 145 pounds, he's aiming to add considerable bulk to his frame while also improving his footwork and ball skills.

Jason Jr. is among the fearful, expressing concern that he could lose out on a season where both individual and team expectations are sky high.

"Right now, it's not looking too good for us," he said. "If we don't have (a season), I'll just have to wait for my senior year, show out then. ButIm a little worried because I was really looking forward to this season, because we have a good team coming in. I was hoping wed (have) a chance at Valley."

Until team activities can resume, workouts will likely be limited to the backyard at the Oliver house, where Jason Jr. will attempt to make needed improvements to his game, all while avoiding dreaded critical looks from his father.

But with his son seemingly on pace to exceed his lofty accomplishments, Jason Sr. expectsthose disapproving glances will be few and far between.

His skillset, in my opinion, is clearly ahead of mine," he said. "I didnt get offered a Division-I scholarship as a 15 year old. I didnt play varsity as a sophomore. Hes faster than I am, quicker, better ball skills. I dont know if thats dad talk, but hes clearly going to be a better athlete than his dad was.

Liberty Township responds to criticism over DD project in Licking County – The Newark Advocate

Bill Bogantz, Guest Columnist Published 3:41 p.m. ET July 12, 2020

The Board of Trustees of Liberty Township, Licking County, Ohio, wants to take the opportunity to address the rampant misinformation regarding two applications for zoning certificates to permit two group homes proposed to be constructed and located in Liberty

Township. First, the Board of Trustees does not review applications for zoning certificates, does not have the authority to approve or reject them, and, contrary to baseless statements, has not rejected either application.

Second, each time the applications have been submitted to Liberty Township, and they have been submitted twice, they have been incomplete, and have failed to include all of the necessary information required for these types of applications under the Liberty Township Zoning Resolution. If Liberty Township receives completed applications, they will be reviewed by the Zoning Department, which will make the initial determination and identify any next steps that may be required, in accordance with Liberty Townships process for handling such applications.

Previously: Board of DD superintendent: 'We weren't welcome in Liberty Township'

Liberty Township Trustees, Board of DD differ on why project failed

Third, Great Lakes Property Development, a third-party builder, was the stated applicant for these two proposals, not the Licking County Board of Developmental Disabilities. Liberty Township has made multiple requests for the additional information that is missing from the applications, on June 16th and June 21st. Finally, on June 25th, the applications were denied by the Zoning Department for lack of complete information. The truth and facts are that Liberty Township has yet to receive a set of complete applications, and hence has not made any determination based on building or use.

It is unfortunate that the Licking County Board of Developmental Disabilities has found it necessary to resort to the court of public opinion rather than work with the builder to submit completed application materials to Liberty Township. If the Editorial Board has additional information to support its unfounded assertions, please provide thati nformation to Liberty Township and, if no such information exists, the Board of Trustees requests a retraction of its June 28, 2020 editorial.

Bill Bogantz, Trustee, Liberty Township, Licking County, Ohio

The Licking County Board of Developmental Disabilities disputes the claims that their applications were incomplete. Also, while the original editorial did wrongly imply that the trustees formally rejected the project in avote, The Advocate's editorial board stands by its belief that the trustees helped foster a situation where the board of developmental disabilities felt unwanted in Liberty Township. This in practice killed the project from moving forward in the area, which the editorial board believes is more important than whether the trustees held a formal vote on the issue.

Drive-through water collection to benefit Liberty County firefighters set for Aug. 1 – Bluebonnet News

Fire stations across Liberty County will be collecting bottled water and Gatorade in the H20 for Heroes Water Collection Drive on Saturday, Aug. 1, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. As the temperatures rise so does the physical demand on firefighters, making it an even more critical time to stay hydrated as they battle fires and respond to emergencies.

Residents, churches, non-profits organizations and businesses in Liberty County are being encouraged to participate. In addition to cases of water and Gatorade, organizers of the drive are asking for donations of individually-packaged salty snacks, such as nuts, crackers and trail mix.

Organizers are striving to maintain a no-contact way of collecting the items, such as setting up tables outside the fire stations where people can leave the items. At some stations, a firefighter may also be on site to help unload the items with limited contact with the donor, thereby working to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

Nicolus Nelson with Liberty County ESD 3, one of the organizers, said that donations can be made in advance by arranging the deliveries with the fire departments in the donors community.

They can always drop off items at the front door of the fire stations, he said.

Here are the locations of the fire stations in Liberty County:

It's been a year and a half since anyone has heard from Seth Svabik -- now his family and police are offering a reward for information

by: Nadine Grimley

Editors note: This story has been edited to correct the relationship of Bonnie Svabik to Seth Svabik. She is his stepmother. We regret the error.

LIBERTY TWP., Ohio (WKBN) What happened to Seth Svabik? Its a question both his family and police want an answer to. Now theyre offering a $5,000 reward for information that could lead them to the missing man.

Seth has ties to Cincinnati and Ludlow, Kentucky, but seemingly disappeared from Trumbull County January 9, 2019 without a trace.

There has to be somebody that knows something, said Thomas Svabik, Seths father.

The Svabik family is pleading for answers. Its been a year and a half to the day since Seth left a rehab facility in Warren.

His last known location was Motel 6 on Belmont Avenue in Liberty, where Thomas said Seth was turned away from, most likely because he was high.

Seth is a very sensitive, caring person, said Bonnie Svabik, his stepmother. He really has a good heart and its sad he got into this mess with the drugs.

Seth was on the phone with his mother, who lives out of town, as he walked away. Thomas told us the last thing she heard him say.

Hey bud, how you doin? So we dont know if that was just a casual greeting, or that was someone that he knew that was coming to pick him up or something like that because he did have a lot of friends in the area.

Seths bags were left behind, found across the street. Other than that, it seems he vanished in plain sight from busy Belmont Avenue without a trace.

His phone has been turned off and theres no activity on his bank account.

Only thing that has come of that is direct deposits from Social Security and from the stimulus. Theres been no withdrawals, no activity whatsoever from any persons, said Liberty Police Capt. Ray Buhala.

We havent heard one doggone thing with anybody. Nothing, Thomas said.

Drones and two separate cadaver dog teams did an extensive search of the area where he was last seen but still no clues, no leads and no tips.

Its very difficult at this point, Buhala said.

If theres anybody that knows anything about anything, even the smallest little detail, is to at least give the police a way to go, Thomas said.

If you have any information on where Seth Svabik is or how he disappeared, please call Liberty Township Police at 330-759-1315. Again, there is a $5,000 reward for tips that help police find him.

Teaonui Tehau invited for trial in the Netherlands – Football in Oceania

Teaonui Tehaus dream to play in Europe might become reality. The record-breaking striker of Tahitian football club AS Venus has been officially invited for a trial at a semi-professional football club in The Netherlands competing in the 3rd national league. However he has to hurry to get his funds ready in order to not miss this chance of a lifetime. Pre-season in the Dutch top leagues started on the 7th of July but the club is yet waiting the trial confirmation by Tehau.

His talent was noticed by Dutchman Paul Driessen during the 2019 Pacific Games in Samoa. Driessen, a registered intermediary at the Netherlands Football Association (KNVB) has been active in Oceania since 2010 with the Netherlands Oceania Support Foundation. He visited the tournament in a double role as intermediary.

Our goal has always been to build a solid bridge between Oceania and Europe for football. The foundation recruits coaches for national football federations in Oceania and organises training camps in The Netherlands for national football teams. On the other hand, I am also active as scout for talent who dream of playing in Europe, Driessen said in a press release.

Last February I visited AS Venus in Tahiti. I wanted to see three national team players competing in real time twice. I was impressed about the overall quality of talent within the club and had a fruitful conversation with the club board and several players. So I expressed my ambition to help them in fulfilling their dream: Having a football career in Europe.

Driessen has been promoting the Tahiti national team players in The Netherlands in the past months. Especially Teaonui Tehau, who attracted a lot of attention in The Netherlands due to his impressive scoring ability.

Teaonui and I had regular contact on the development via Facebook Messenger over the past month. He told me that it is his dream to play in Europe, even if its just for one season, Driessen said.

Teaonui received an official invitation letter from 3rd national league club Kozakken Boys. This club is semi-professional according to Dutch standards and holds a very rich club culture and history.

The first team is a mixture of cultures which makes it easy for someone from Tahiti to get integrated. The club is located in a town called Werkendam and is driven by many professionals and fans from a devoted community. The stadium has reached an audience of 5,000 visitors during national league cup matches so there is a great fanbase there as well. Kozakken Boys delivers several football players to the professional leagues every year. This is a great hub for Teoanui to become a full-professional football player.

Teaonui will be part of a team consisting many former professional football players. One of those players is former Real Madrid player Royston Drenthe.

Teaonui can learn a lot from these players. It is essential that he comes to The Netherlands while he is still 27 years old.

Most professional football clubs in The Netherlands turned down my offer as they regarded him as too old. The transfer value of a 27-year old player is simply lower than of a 21-year old player. But I believe in him and so does Kozakken Boys. We have to grab this opportunity with both hands. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity. Now or never. There is no second chance for Teaonui because he will be 29 at the start of next years season. Another major reason to take this opportunity is that Teaonui will pave the way for other talent from Tahiti in the future. I expect that more invitations will follow in the future if he succeeds.

He can be an eye opener for professional clubs in The Netherlands as a proof that Tahiti contains a great source of talent. Having national team players play at a professional senior level would make the Tahiti national team much stronger. Great examples in this development strategies are New Zealand and New Caledonia with quite a number of internationals playing abroad, Driessen said.

Teaonui is invited for a two-week trial and is expected to arrive in The Netherlands on the 20th of July. There are four matches scheduled during his trial.

The invitation is there. The only thing he has to do is to get his funds ready to book his flight and accommodation. This should happen within 5 days from now to avoid the inviting club moving on to another invitation, Driessen said.

Dire Wolves Reveal New Owner and Management Team – TEO – The Esports Observer

Oceania esports team Dire Wolves has revealed its new management team as part of a series of announcements this week that will include a rebrand and entry into new games. Jason Spiller assumes the role as owner of the organization, after firm Guinevere Capital and other backers divested their interest earlier this year, in line with Riot Games rules on multi-team ownership in League of Legends esports.

Dave Harris, managing director of Guinevere Capital, told The Esports Observer that while his company will continue its team business in Europe with Excel Esports and the London Spitfire, in Oceania it transitioned to a service provider role through agency work and via its Esports High Performance Centers.

The key has been to find people that have that non-endemic esport experience, as well as endemic experience, he said. That is like gold dust in this industry, and its great that its finally worked with Dire Wolves, with Jason and his backers able to step in.

Spiller has a 15-year tenure in Australia and New Zealand (ANZ)s gaming and esports scene. From 2015-17 he was lead for a number of categories for Microsoft in the region, including first-party Xbox titles and Halo esports events, before joining Omen by HP for two years, most recently as marketing manager for gaming, esports, and immersive technologies.

Connecting with Harris through the Esports Games Association Australia (EGAA), Spiller saw an opportunity to support ANZ esports as a whole, particularly his own country of New Zealand. Im very passionate about supporting Kiwis, especially because there are a great amount of New Zealanders that I think can make a big impact on the world, and the Dire Wolves seem to be the perfect way to try and continue doing that, he said.

Alongside Spiller, Richard Bryan joins the Dire Wolves as head of production. Bryan has produced tournaments for Omen by HP in the past, and has a background in music and film production. Head of Content William Slingsby has worked with numerous esports teams, TVNZ, and Auckland Basketball, and self-produced the Four v Four documentary series on New Zealands Halo scene. Jordan Gardiner, head of design, has built UI assets for major LAN events in the region, and created the new logo and branding to be unveiled later this week.

On the performance side, Craig Nimmo joins as general manager, returning to esports after a three year IT management tenure with Australian supermarket chain Coles. I met him years ago when he was commentating in APAC and ANZ for Call of Duty 4, and Battlefield, Spiller said. Hes got a ton of experience both in gaming and more generally in managing complex organizations. It was just a massive win to be able to bring him on.
