This graduate of history and applied economics is certain of one thing: Our ways of working and consuming are the cornerstones of change.

New lifestyles

For a lot of people, the days of working in an office are over predicts Jason Schenker. Teleworking will become more widespread, especially in low-density urban areas. The size of the home will become more important than proximity to the office. A distant descendant of French immigrants in Quebec and a Europhile who studied German and French at university, Jason Schenker compares his country to the Old Continent. In America, people will eventually leave cities where real estate is expensive, like New York or San Francisco. The United States, with a territory three times larger than Europe, does not have the same public transport infrastructure. People like convenience, says the economist, they are abandoning supermarkets in favor of e-commerce. Supply chains will change: warehouses are set to grow and department stores will disappear. On the other hand, shopping areas with European-style shops will remain, as they are still a full-fledged experience. And what about the role of the environment in the world to come?Jason Schenker is betting on a decrease in automobile transport, which would have a double advantage: The reduction of fossil fuel consumption and CO2 emissions and the saving of time, which by its essence is a non-renewable resource.

Feeding the economic recovery

Companies need to get back to basics, generate cash and ensure a positive return on every expense. He advises contractors to tighten their belts, spend only what they need, and consider what contracts they might feasibly terminate, including overheads such as office space. On a broader level, there are three immutable ingredients of economic recovery, the economist argues: Fiscal policy, monetary policy central banks have taken steps to encourage investment and time. It will take time, because the recovery will be slow.Schenker is based in Texas, one of the first US states to lift the lockdown, and speaks of the growing number of Covid cases and the possibility of a further shutdown of activities.We dont know how long the pandemic will last. The longer it lasts, the more people will get used to the changes, he says. And the longer-term impact of the changes will be more noticeable.

Update: Kazakh officials are now pushing back against Chinas claims though questions remain. Heres our latest story.

Chinas embassy inthe former Soviet republic of Kazakhstan has put out a statement warning of an unknown pneumonia that is reportedly even deadlier than the coronavirus that causes COVID-19, the South China Morning Post reports.

The death rate of this disease is much higher than the novel coronavirus, read the warning to Chinese citizens in Kazakhstan, as quoted by the SCMP. The countrys health departments are conducting comparative research into the pneumonia virus, but have yet to identify the virus.

Pneumonia is an infection of either one or both lungs and is caused by either bacteria, viruses or fungi. The inflammation can make it difficult to breathe and in some extreme cases can be life-threatening.

The statement doesnt include any details and doesnt elaborate on the nature of the virus. COVID-19 has also been shown to cause severe pneumonia in both lungs for some patients.

Local media have been reporting a worrying uptick in pneumonia cases in a number of Kazakh cities since mid-June, as the SCMP reports, with as many as 500 reported patients across three locations, 30 of whom are in critical condition. Officials and the media in Kazakhstan, according to the SCMP, are saying the cases are just regular pneumonia.

Reported pneumonia deaths in June account for over a third of pneumonia deaths in the country since the beginning of the year, according to the embassys statement.

Kazakhstan hasnt been immune to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. A state of emergency was declared in mid-March, with lockdowns lifted in mid-May. Kazakhstans President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev warned of a second wave this week on a televised address.

There have been over 250 COVID-19 deaths in the country of roughly 18 million residents so far, with just shy of 50,000 reported cases.

Scientists Detect "Ringing" in the Earth’s Atmosphere – Futurism

According to a new study by an international team of researchers, the Earths entire atmosphere vibrates much like a ringing bell a low-pitched fundamental tone alongside higher-pitched overtones.

The discovery could help scientists better predict weather patterns and understand the makeup of our atmosphere.

This finally resolves a longstanding and classic issue in atmospheric science, but it also opens a new avenue of research to understand both the processes that excite the waves and the processes that act to damp the waves, co-author Kevin Hamilton, a professor at the International Pacific Research Center at the University of Hawaii, said in a statement.

The atmospheric resonances were first proposed at the beginning of the 19th century by French physicist Pierre-Simon Laplace, whose dynamic theory of ocean tides has since allowed scientists to predict deformations in a planets atmosphere.

The tones,according to Hamilton and his collaborators, are created by massive pressure waves that travel around the globe. Each wave corresponds to each of these different resonant frequencies.

Our identification of so many modes in real data shows that the atmosphere is indeed ringing like a bell, Hamilton said.

The new study includes a detailed analysis of pressure observations spanning 38 years. The researchers found dozens of separate waves circling the Earth in a checkerboard pattern.

For these rapidly moving wave modes, our observed frequencies and global patterns match those theoretically predicted very well, lead author Takatoshi Sakazaki, assistant professor at the Kyoto University Graduate School of Science, said inthe statement. It is exciting to see the vision of Laplace and other pioneering physicists so completely validated after two centuries.

Astronomers Discover Deep-Space Structure, 1.4 Billion Light Years Across – Futurism

Astronomers have created a 3D map of a cosmic structure so gigantic that its almost impossible to even comprehend.

The South Pole Wall is a flabbergasting 1.4 billion light years across and contains hundreds of thousands of galaxies, Live Science reports. That puts it on par with the Sloan Great Wall, the sixth largest cosmic structure ever discovered at 1.38 billion light-years across.

The surprise for us is that this structure is as big as the Sloan Great Wall and twice as close, and remained unnoticed, being hidden in an obscured sector of the southern sky, Daniel Pomarde from Paris-Saclay University and lead author of a paper about the research published in The Astrophysical Journal today, told The New York Times in an email.

The discovery is a wonderful poster child for the power of visualizations in research, co-lead Brent Tully of the University of Hawaii, told the Times.

To create their map of the South Pole Wall, the cosmographers had to use new sky surveys to peek past the Zone of Galactic Obscuration, an area in the southern part of the observable universe thats obscured by the comparatively bright Milky Way.

The new research builds on a 2014 discovery by the same team of cosmographers of a supercluster of galaxies with the Milky Way being one of approximately 100,000 galaxies contained within called Laniakea.

To put the size of the South Pole Wall into perspective, our own Milky Way galaxy is a mere 52,850 light years across.

Counted in miles, the distance of the South Pole Wall end-to-end would end up have 21 zeroes attached to it. Estimates put the number of grains of sand on Earth at just 7.5 quintillion (18 zeros).

These gigantic structures are made up of countless clumps called cosmic webs floating inside enormous clouds of hydrogen gas. Outside these larger structures, theres not a whole lot of stuff, as far as we know.

To make the discovery, the team came up with a new technique to measure the dizzying size of the South Pole Wall, which takes into account the velocity of galaxies as they exert gravitational forces on each other.

This new technique was even able to take dark matter into consideration, the mysterious stuff believed to make up approximately 85 percent of the matter in the universe. While dark matter remains a mystery, astronomers suggest it could be the scaffolding that determines the shape of these cosmic structures.

As of right now, the largest cosmic structure ever discovered is the Hercules-Corona Borealis Great Wall, which spans 10 billion light-years. Even then, the Wall accounts for only a tenth the size of the observable universe, which spans about 93 billion light years.

Get a Grip: Intel Neuromorphic Chip Used to Give Robotics Arm a Sense of Touch – HPCwire

Moving neuromorphic technology from the laboratory into practice has proven slow-going. This week, National University of Singapore researchers moved the needle forward demonstrating an event-driven, visual-tactile perception system that uses Intels Loihi chip to control a robotic arm combining tactile sensing and vision. Noteworthy, they also ran the exercise on a GPU system and reported the Loihi-based the system performed slightly better and at much lower power.

NUS researchers presented their results today at the virtual Robotics Science and Systems conference being held this week. The combination of tactile sensing (grip) with vision (location) is expected to significantly enhance Robotic arm precision and delicacy of grip when handling objects. The use of neuromorphic technology also promises progress in efforts to reduce the power consumption required for robotics which is a central goal for neuromorphic technology.

Were excited by these results. They show that a neuromorphic system is a promising piece of the puzzle for combining multiple sensors to improve robot perception. Its a step toward building power-efficient and trustworthy robots that can respond quickly and appropriately in unexpected situations, said Harold Soh a NUS professor and author on a paperdescribing the work (Event-Driven Visual-Tactile Sensing and Learning for Robots).

Intel has long been at the forefront of efforts to commercialize neuromorphic technology, and its Loihi (chip)/Pohoiki (system) is among the most developed platforms. Neuromorphic systems mimic natural systems such as the brain in that they use spiking neural networks (SNN) to process information instead of the artificial neural networks (ANN) more commonly used in machine/deep learning.

Mike Davies, director of Intels Neuromorphic Computing Lab, said, This research from National University of Singapore provides a compelling glimpse to the future of robotics where information is both sensed and processed in an event-driven manner combining multiple modalities. The work adds to a growing body of results showing that neuromorphic computing can deliver significant gains in latency and power consumption once the entire system is re-engineered in an event-based paradigm spanning sensors, data formats, algorithms, and hardware architecture. Intel also posted an account of the work.

This excerpt from the NUS paper nicely describes the challenge and contribution:

Many everyday tasks require multiple sensory modalities to perform successfully. For example, consider fetching a carton of soymilk from the fridge humans use vision to locate the carton and can infer from a simple grasp how much liquid the carton contains. They can then use their sense of sight and touch to lift the object without letting it slip. These actions (and inferences) are performed robustly using a power-efficient neural substratecompared to the multi-modal deep neural networks used in current artificial systems, human brains require far less energy.

In this work, we take crucial steps towards efficient visual-tactile perception for robotic systems. We gain inspiration from biological systems, which are asynchronous and event- driven. In contrast to resource-hungry deep learning methods, event-driven perception forms an alternative approach that promises power-efficiency and low-latencyfeatures that are ideal for real-time mobile robots. However, event-driven systems remain under-developed relative to standard synchronous perception methods.

The value of multi-modal sensing has long been recognized as an important component for advancing robotics. However, limitations in the use of spiking neural networks have impeded the use of neuromorphic chips in real-time sensing functions.

Event-based sensors have been successfully used in conjunction with deep learning techniques. The binary events are first converted into real-valued tensors, which are processed downstream by deep ANNs (artificial neural networks). This approach generally yields good models (e.g., for motion segmentation, optical flow estimation, and car steering prediction, but at high compute cost, write the researchers

Neuromorphic learning, specifically Spiking Neural Networks (SNNs), provide a competing approach for learning with event data. Similar to event-based sensors, SNNs work directly with discrete spikes and hence, possess similar characteristics, i.e., low latency, high temporal resolution and low power consumption. Historically, SNNs have been hampered by the lack of a good training procedure. Gradient-based methods such as backpropagation were not available because spikes are non-differentiable. Recent developments in effective SNN training, and the nascent availability of neuromorphic hardware (e.g., IBM TrueNorth and Intel Loihi) have renewed interest in neuromorphic learning for various applications, including robotics. SNNs do not yet consistently outperform their deep ANN cousins on pseudo-event image datasets, and the research community is actively exploring better training methods for real event-data.

Another obstacle was simply developing adequate tactile sensing devices. Although there are numerous applications for tactile sensors (e.g., minimal invasive surgery and smart prosthetics, tactile sensing technology lags behind vision. In particular, current tactile sensors remain difficult to scale and integrate with robot platforms. The reasons are twofold: first, many tactile sensors are interfaced via time-divisional multiple access (TDMA), where individual taxels are periodically and sequentially sampled. The serial readout nature of TDMA inherently leads to an increase of readout latency as the number of taxels in the sensor is increased. Second, high spatial localization accuracy is typically achieved by adding more taxels in the sensor; this invariably leads to more wiring, which complicates integration of the skin onto robot end- effectors and surfaces, according to the paper.

The researchers developed their own a novel neuro-inspired tactile sensor (NeuTouch): The structure of NeuTouch is akin to a human fingertip: it comprises skin, and bone, and has a physical dimension of 372113 mm. This design facilitates integration with anthropomorphic end-effectors (for prosthetics or humanoid robots) and standard multi-finger grippers; in our experiments, we use NeuTouch with a Robotiq 2F-140 gripper. We focused on a fingertip design in this paper, but alternative structures can be developed to suit different applications, wrote the researchers.

NeuTouchs tactile sensing is achieved via a layer of electrodes with 39 taxels and a graphene-based piezoresistive thin film. The taxels are elliptically-shaped to resemble the human fingertips fast-adapting (FA) mechano-receptors, and are radially-arranged with density varied from high to low, from the center to the periphery of the sensor.

During typical grasps, NeuTouch (with its convex surface) tends to make initial contact with objects at its central region where the taxel density is the highest. Correspondingly, rich tactile data can be captured in the earlier phase of tactile sensing, which may help accelerate inference (e.g., for early classification). The graphene-based pressure transducer forms an effective tactile sensor, due to its high Youngs modulus, which helps to reduce the transducers hysteresis and response time, report the researchers.

The primary goal, say the researchers, was to determine if their multi-modal system was effective at detecting differences in objects that were difficult to isolate using a single sensor, and whether the weight spike-count loss resulted in better early classification performance. Note that our objective was not to derive the best possible classifier; indeed, we did not include proprioceptive data which would likely have improved results, nor conduct an exhaustive (and computationally expensive) search for the best architecture. Rather, we sought to understand the potential benefits of using both visual and tactile spiking data in a reasonable setup.

They used four different containers: a coffee can, Pepsi bottle, cardboard soy milk carton, and metal tuna can. The robot was used to grasp and lift each object 15 times and classify the object and determine its weight. The multi-modal SNN model achieved the highest score (81percent) which was about ten percent better than any of the single mode tests.

In terms of comparing the Loihi neuromorphic chip with the GPU (Nvidia GeForce RTX 2080), their overall performance was broadly similar but the Loihi-based system used far less power (see table). The latest work is significant step forward.

And, taking products apart will become increasingly important as more waste is electronic, which often contains valuable materials such as gold, silver, platinum and cobalt.

Shahin Rahimifard, professor of sustainable engineering at the UKs Loughborough University observes that, In electric cars, most of the value will be the precious metals which, by weight, could be only four or five percent. His team is developing a robotic dissembler.

This technology is creating a sustainable workforce for jobs that arent being filled, notes Wirth. These are the dull, dirty, dangerous kind of jobs which robotics and AI is perfect for.

Robotics Finds Its Place in Fulfillment – Logistics Management

Extraordinary timesand a need for proven measuresmay be what propels robotics to the next level in warehouse and distribution center (DC) operations.

Not that robotics has been slow to catch on in warehousing. According to analyst firm ABI Research, the global mobile robotics market will reach $23 billion this year. In a 2020 survey by Peerless Research as part of our annual Industry Outlook study, 9% surveyed told us they were already using robotics, and 19% were considering them.

But can robotics for intralogistics keep growing quickly, given the disruption from the COVID-19 pandemic? Unemployment has skyrocketed. Some manufacturers temporarily had to shut down sites, and many companies have tightened their budgets, at least in the short term.

At the same time, e-commerce has spiked, especially in sectors like grocery. And while it may be too early to tally the impacts of the pandemic on robotics, in the long term, the technologys ability to increase productivity with minimal added labor bodes well for the technology, says Rian Whitton, a senior analyst at ABI.

From what were seeing, there has been a huge increase in demand for e-commerce during the pandemic, says Whitton. And the greater the percentage of retail that shifts to online, the more heavily automated these warehouses and other facilities involved with fulfillment will need to become, which should accelerate the market for mobile robotics.

Robotics spans autonomous mobile robots (AMRs) that transport goods or assist workers with picking, as well as fixed robotic arms that can identify and pick goods. Some workflows may combine the two, with AMRs transporting bins to robotic arms. Some vendors, such as IAM Robotics, offer mobile manipulation robots that can pick items.

In short, there are multiple types of robotics, and they often work in combination with people, or with fixed forms of automation like conveyors. This range of solution types is the first thing potential users need to realize about warehouse robotics.

Robotics vendors say there are other ways that robotics is evolving for intralogistics, including new workflows, better exception handling, and deeper leveraging of artificial intelligence (AI). Whats more, robotics aligns with the times in that they can help keep human co-workers safe, while keeping orders flowing to customers.

During the last couple of years, when unemployment was at historic lows, an often-cited driver for robotics was how it could make the labor you could find more effective by doing away with much of the non-value-added time spent walking or pushing carts in large DCs.

While for the recently unemployed, warehousing can provide much needed work, since due to health concerns, many companies will likely continue to struggle to find enough people without increased automation, say some vendors.

From a business perspective, the big challenges are that were running out of people, weve been running out of space, and weve been running out of time, says Jeff Cashman, COO with AMR vendor GreyOrange.

Even before COVID-19, it was difficult to hire and retain enough associates, adds Cashman. Now, because of health risk concerns, its still difficult to find enough people, and on top of that, theres the need to practice social distancing, and time pressures operations face havent gotten any easier. Those three problemsrunning out of people, running out of space, and running out of timecan be seen as underlying drivers for robotics. Its important, however, that the robots are integrated with a software that is real-time and flexible, to solve those problems.

Collaborative robots are well suited to these troubling times, explains Karen Leavitt, CMO for Locus Robotics, because robots boost the productivity of their human co-workers, and naturally keeps them socially distanced.

Mobile robots are capable of transporting larger payloads across a facility.

Locus offers a multi-bot collaborative AMR solution in which human pickers stick to one fairly compact area to do picking with the help of multiple bots that come by with work to execute. This elimination of most of the travel involved with traditional pick-to-cart methods, and the guidance from the robots, helps Locus users get at least two times more productivity from their associates versus pick to cart, says Leavitt.

Our solution also naturally provides for employee separation, says Leavitt. We did it for productivity reasons. The design point was to ensure we were keeping workers from crossing each others paths and walking long distances. It turns out that the same design point that makes the solution more productive also supports social distancing.

The surge of online buying has also found many DCs scrambling to meet orders. Robotics fits well with this challenge, Leavitt says, not only because it increases productivity, but because it scales quickly by allowing an operation to bring in more mobile robots during a demand surgeand conversely, shipping robots back when the peak subsides.

The current spike in e-commerce has been pretty dramatic, Leavitt says. I think its going to settle back down eventually, but probably at a much high plateau than before. Thats going to create some lasting impacts for warehouse operations.

Tom Galluzzo, CEO of IAM Robotics, sees robotics as gaining in importance as corporate executives address growing challenges around e-commerce growth and operational continuity. People are still in crunch mode trying to get through this period of disruption, but once they get through and do their internal analysis of what to prioritize, we know that robotics and automation are going to be a high priority, he says.

While robots do reduce the labor requirement versus more manual methods of processing orders, vendors say people typically are part of the equation. Using the bots for materials movements frees up warehouse associates to do things like kitting, exception handling, packing quality checks, or simply spending more time on actual picking.

There also are larger AMRs that can be configured to bring pallets and larger loads from receiving to a bulk storage area, which eliminates time spent by skilled lift truck operators transporting pallets across a DC, with empty trips back to pick up more pallets.

Robotics frees up people to do the more nuanced, less repeatable tasks that makes use of the ingenuity which people have, but robots do not, says David Clear, chief revenue officer with AMR provider Vecna Robotics.

Galluzo agrees that AMRs arent turning DCs into lights-out, fully-automated operations. Typically, there are manual or semi-automated processes that link up with the robotics. For example, says Galluzo, in a new implementation this year, A.S. Watson, a major health and beauty retailer in Europe, will be using IAMs mobile manipulation bots to batch select goods into bins for conveyance to a downstream put wall process. Put walls use human workers who select goods for orders using light-directed visual cues.

Jason Walker, CEO and co-founder of AMR vendor Waypoint Robotics, agrees robots are great at eliminating human effort spent on low value-added tasks like walking long distances to pick locations, or pushing heavy carts. For example, in one recent deployment of Waypoints robots, the bots automate the movement of carts loaded with heavy goods needed to fill orders. The AMRs bring the goods to a picking area where workers using a voice picking solution pick the orders.

Walker believes that, for theforeseeable future, the value of mobile robots is in having easily configurable software that can combine automated robotic tasks with human work. Our whole thesis at Waypoint is that humans with robots are better than humans on their own, and robots with humans are better than robots on their own, Walker says. The people currently doing manual work recognize that the endless walking part of their job is not where they are adding value, and, its also exhausting.

Vendors generally agree that the key to robotics effectiveness is the software smarts that leverages technologies like AI and machine learning so that the system constantly learns from factors like order mix, labor resources and material flow patterns.

The software should also be easy to use, and not just for a vendor-provided specialist, but for workers and supervisors in a facility, says Walker. Most mobile robots are getting easy to set up from the perspective of an automation engineer, but they need to be easy enough for a shipping or receiving clerk, or an assembly line worker, to be able to quickly learn and use, he says. You shouldnt need a roboticist to come in to configure the system if you have a platform that was designed from the ground up to be used by those doing the frontline work.

There are other factors that contribute to ease of AMR deployment, adds Walker. One is that, if needed, the robots can function disconnected from a facilitys wireless network, so the site doesnt have to spend money and time having their information technology (IT) staff beef up the wireless network.

Robotics arms have been used successfully in manufacturing for decades, but traditionally they had to be trained to do one movement or to memorize how to handle a small set of materials.

But now, the advancement of artificial intelligence (AI) software, along with vision systems to read bar codes, is enabling robotic arms to take a more cognitive approach to handling the broad range of stock keeping units (SKUs) found in warehousing.

AI is now making it possible for robotic arms to handle the large SKU counts found in warehousing, says Kevin Reader, director of marketing and business development for KNAPP, a provider of intralogisticsautomation solutions.

At the 2020 Modex event, KNAPP announced a partnership with Covariant, an AI robotics technology vendor, to enhance KNAPPs piece picking robot solution. The solution already is in use at several customer sites, including at Obeta, a German electrical supply wholesaler.

Reader says that by employing AI, piece picking robots dont have to be trained on each item, and can improve over time on how to grasp items. Our solution is using an AI engine with deep learning to identify SKUs and adjust for how to best grip an item, says Reader. And, its learning so that the piece picking is enhanced every time items are handled.

AI allows for model-free, autonomous picking, says Vince Martinelli, head of product and marketing at RightHand Robotics, a provider of autonomous robotic picking solutions. Some of RighthHands deployments involve picking of tens of thousands of SKUs, says Martinelli.

With AI, a piece picking solution doesnt need to pre-learn 3D models for each SKU, or refer to database of dimensions, to figure out how to handle an item. This makes it possible for robotic picking to adapt rapidly to new SKUs, he adds.

Operations are going to experience rapid changes in their product mix, says Martinelli. Youre going to have new SKUs, new suppliers, and there will be changes in packaging, so the robotic piece picking has to be insensitive to changes and fluctuations like that.

Walker also advises potential users to ask about how the robotic charging stations work and how maintenance free they are. Additionally, he says, an AMR solution should be able to easily interface to software like a warehouse management system (WMS) using application programming interfaces (APIs), but also be capable of being quickly set up standalone.

The software platform for most robotics solutions also employs AI to constantly learn from operations and dynamically adapt to tasks and routes as the work unfolds. The most important part of a solution is the software, which is AI-based software that is real-time in nature, says Cashman. Robotics software, he adds, should be able to adjust tasks on the fly, based on factors like whats currently coming into the order pool, where each robot is, and the current performance level of the workers.

The software is really integrated into the robots so that when the system is thinking about orders or inventory or the particular people that are picking, or the available robots, its weighing these factors all at once, says Cashman. And its that ability to orchestrate all of these components in real timethats the difference with the robotics of today versus a generation ago.

Robotics vendors need to have robust software, not only for managing inventory and robot movements within a robotic zone, but for coordinating with upstream and downstream zones as well as reconciling exceptions with WMS, points out Markus Schmidt, president of Swisslog Americas, which offers a wide range of automation solutions, including AMRs and collaborative picking arm solutions.

For example, says Schmidt, a robotic picking arm can rapidly pick goods from bins presented to it from a system like an automated storage solution. While the API-based integration between the piece picking robot and automated storage can be quickly achieved, there are still exception-handling scenarios to iron out.

For instance, a robotic picking arm may need three items in a bin to fill an order, but if the bin presented only has two items, the robotic arm and its vision system need supporting software thats able to resolve such an exception by initiating a logical action, like requesting a new bin.

At a manual pick station, an operator can resolve that type of exception, says Schmidt, but robotics vendors need to have configurable software at the warehouse execution system (WES) level to automatically manage exceptions, or when desired, kick up an exception for management review. Most of the exception handling should be automatic, but it should be configurable via the software, says Schmidt.

Ultimately, says Schmidt, robotics and WES trends intertwine, especially when it comes to resolving exceptions. Theres been a lot of progress with the robot technology itself, but the real challenge is to make these machines productive in actual distribution environments, which is where the need for configurable exception handling comes in, he says.

The rapid uptake of AMRs also has drawn attention from software vendors who have in some cases partnered with AMR vendors to pre-integrate robotic platforms with their software, or come up with AMR options of their own.

According to Don White, CEO of North America for WMS vendor SnapFulfil, AMR use is beginning to become normalized, which puts the onus on vendors to make them easy to deploywhich was a driver for the vendor coming up with its SnapCart solution.

That intersection between operational needs and development of AMR solutions presented a great opportunity, says White. Taking advantage of that opportunity requires removing the most common barriers: seamless integration between the AMR and the WMS, and scalable, predictable and affordable solutions.

Robotics vendors have benefited from the wow factor of the technology, but ultimately have to deliver solutions that help DCs fulfill orders faster, more accurately and reliably.

Thus, vendors are not only focused on core technology like deeper use of AI, but on partnerships with other types of automation or software vendors to ensure that robotics can integrate with various systems in a DC, says Vince Martinelli, head of product and marketing at RightHand Robotics, a provider of autonomous robotic picking solutions.

Theres definitely a wow factor in working with robotics or in watching robotics demos, but if you want to make a business of it, youve got to be solving real problems for somebody, Martinelli says.

Another frontier for robotics is employing them in new workflows beyond picking of small items. Larger AMR units, for example, are being used to automate the flow of pallets of inbound goods from receiving docks to bulk storage, or to a replenishment zone for AMR mobile storage carts.

And others are using collaborative AMRs to guide workers on replenishing pick locations, says Leavitt. Locuss bots do this via task interleaving logic that guides workers on replenishment tasks interspersed with picking tasks.

The companies that have deployed robotics aggressively tend to be visionaries, but also pragmatic in that theyre after better and faster customer service, adds Leavitt. I think of them as pragmatic visionaries, says Leavitt. These are companies that are not afraid to say: How do I move the needle on performance in a way that is going to add value for mycustomers and for my business?

As the coronavirus pandemic rewrites the rules of human interaction, it also has inspired new thinking about how robots and other machines might step in.

The stuff of the bot world early factory-line automation up to todays artificial intelligence has been a growing fact of life for decades. The worldwide health crisis has added urgency to the question of how to bring robotics into the public health equation.

Nowhere is that truer than in Japan, a country with a long fascination with robots, from android assistants to robot receptionists. Since the virus arrived, robots have offered their services as bartenders, security guards and deliverymen.

Sharing the full story, not just the headlines

But they dont necessarily need to supplant humans, researchers say. They can also bridge the gap between people mindful of social distance now or when the next major contagion hits.

Want to drop in on your elderly parents but are afraid of passing on a coronavirus infection? Maybe youre missing your grandchildren, and finding Zoom chats a little limiting?

Ideas are brewing.

Hugging the bot

The Newme robot developed by Japanese company Avatarin is basically a tablet computer on a stand, with wheels. The user controls the avatar from a laptop or tablet, and his or her face shows on the avatars screen.

Its really like teleporting your consciousness, says founder and CEO Akira Fukabori. You are really present.

Already available commercially, Avatarins robots have been used by doctors to interact with patients in a Japanese coronavirus ward; by university students in Tokyo to attend a graduation ceremony; and by fans of the Yomiuri Giants baseball team to remotely interview their favourite players after games held in empty stadiums.

There are even avatar robots that have just arrived at the International Space Station.

But its the way the robot is already being used by families separated by the coronavirus that really underscores the heart of the technology starting with the family of the companys chief operating officer, Kevin Kajitani, whose parents live in Seattle.

His parents cant always come and visit their grandson, Fukabori says. But they always access the avatar, and can even chase their grandson. And the grandson really hugs the robot.

No hype, just the advice and analysis you need

Avatarin is part of Japans ANA airline group, and the company has joined with the X Prize Foundation to launch a $10m (8m), four-year contest for companies to create more complex robots that could further develop the avatar concept.

You need to move, Fukabori says. This is really important, because we forget the freedom of this mobility. You can just walk around, and people will talk to you about really, really natural things. That creates human trust. That isnt as easy in Webex or Zoom, where if you dont know each other its really hard to keep talking.

Work is underway on prototypes that allow users to control a remote robot through virtual reality headsets and gloves that allow the wearer to pick up, hold, touch and feel an object with a distant robotic hand, with potential uses ranging from space exploration to disaster relief or elderly care.

But Fukabori says the cheaper, lightweight avatars offer more immediate and affordable uses. What sets this project apart from existing avatar robots, the company says, is the ability for users to access the robots easily from a laptop, by renting them out rather than having to buy them.

Avatarin hopes to install the avatars in more hospitals and in elderly-care centres, shops, museums, zoos and aquariums. The company also aims to have 1,000 in place for next years Tokyo Olympics.

Cleaning patrol

In Tokyo, robotics lab ZMP has been developing three small bots to help compensate for Japans shrinking workforce, employing the same technology as self-driving cars.

A delivery robot aims to transport goods ordered online from local warehouses to customers doors; a patrol robot, with six cameras, does the job of a security guard; a self-driving wheelchair can be programmed to take users to specific destinations. The wheelchair is already available and approved for use on Tokyo streets. The others still await official permission to venture out alone in public.

Now, the patrol robot has been adapted so it can also disinfect surfaces as it patrols, and is attracting interest from Tokyos Metro stations as well as other businesses.

In May, prime minister Shinzo Abe noted surging demand for unmanned deliveries and pledged to carry out tests to see if delivery robots were safe to use on roads and sidewalks by the end of the year.

Even the self-driving wheelchair can come into its own amid a coronavirus-filled world, the company says, potentially helping elderly people move around more independently without a helper who might be a vector for the virus.

Before corona, most customers wanted to reduce workers, says Hisashi Taniguchi, ZMPs chief executive. But after corona, our customers changed drastically. Now, they want to accelerate unmanned systems.

Bot bartender

Qbit Robotics, also in Tokyo, has programmed a robotic arm and hand to interact with customers and serve them coffee, mix cocktails or even serve a simple cup of instant pasta.

President and chief executive Hiroya Nakano says he aims not to replace human interaction but to supply robots that can communicate and entertain in a friendly way.

While robots can sometimes seem disturbing and alien to westerners, they are seen in a more welcoming light by many Japanese people, Nakano says.

Until now, expectations have been high for what robots can do in the future, but they havent been able to do what humans do, he says. But now we are living with the coronavirus, the idea of no contact or automation has become especially important. And I feel there is an extremely high expectation for robots to meet that demand.

And one can dance, too

In South Korea, a Chinese-made robot is already greeting children in Seouls schools as they reopen.

The Cruzr, with eyes that beam a neon-blue light and a video screen on its chest, takes kids temperatures and reminds them to follow anti-virus rules.

Please wear your mask properly, the robot tells a student at Wooam Elementary School whose mask wasnt covering his nose.

Chinese robot maker UBTech launched Cruzr in 2017 as a humanoid service robot for businesses, but the pandemic has given it added value as a personal assistant free from infection risks.

It is also being used by medical institutions for mass temperature screening, patient monitoring and medical record-keeping, helping overwhelmed medical workers.

In June, Seouls Seocho district government deployed Cruzr robots to the districts 51 public schools, helping reduce the burden on overworked teachers.

Before the robot came to school, teachers had taken kids temperatures as they arrived, creating long lines and raising infection risks from human contact. Now, the robot checks the temperature of multiple students as they walk by and immediately sounds an alarm if anyone has a fever.

At first, students were ill at ease with the robot greeting them at the school gate, but in a matter of weeks, students have embraced it as part of the school community, says Yoo Jung-ho, the head of Wooams science department.

At the school, students wave towards the robot at the gate as they walk into the school, and nod in agreement when it reminds them about the mask rules.

The robot can also provide basic academic help and entertain students by teaching them simple dance moves.

Of course, robots cant replace teachers at classrooms yet, but there is significant and rising potential for contactless teaching with the pandemic, Yoo says.

Nine-year-old Lee Hye-rin says she befriended the robot after they danced together.

When I first saw the robot standing in place of our teachers greeting us at the entrance, I found it cold and disorienting, she says. But this robot is actually the same height as I am and also displays goofy dance moves, and I realised I can befriend him and share a fun time.

But Lee feels the robot is not so friendly when it orders her to wear her mask properly.

If I fail to follow the mask rule, my teachers warning will be followed with a smile telling me to behave better in the future, but the robot doesnt smile when it warns me about the mask, she says.

Hagia Sophia and the test of time – TRT World

Is the state of secularism in Turkey entirely predicated upon the exclusion of worshippers from the Hagia Sophia?

The long and short of it: Muslims will now be able to worship in the Hagia Sophia. To bat off the worst of assumptions: no, there will be no icon-smashing spree. Yes, tourists will be able to visit as before (without fee this time; not that money ever mattered). No, the reconversion from museum to mosque is not the end of Secularism, Christianity, Atheism, and added to that the hurrah words invoked to denigrate the reconversion: humanity and pluralism (the use of these latter two domains for added effect being particularly far-fetched). What should end, however, is the apocalypticism that has rendered the event as some sort of knock-down argument now, or an impending downward spiral towards some perilous doom.

Consider the following questions that may help assuage the fatalism at hand: have not Christianity and Islam both survived the Hagia Sophia as Mosque and Museum respectively? Would any waning religiosity and relegation of faith into the private sphere be best explained by the status of Hagia Sophia, wherever in the world such concerns exist, whenever the perpetual dynamic between faith and politics is discussed? Is the issue merely a numbers game, where people in their droves will now flock in or out of faith, or where the number of mosques, churches, and synagogues, will now become the bottom-line in all decision-making from now on? One may recall the words of the late Archbishop Makarios of Cyprus who, amid the deadly inter-communal tensions on the island, delivered a wise Solomon-like judgement when a Turkish-Cypriot married a Greek-Cypriot: Christ will not become poorer and Muhammed richer if Hassan and Hambou marry. That transcendent wisdom can apply here.

The questions can be extended further. Is the state of secularism in Turkey entirely predicated upon the exclusion of worshipers from the Hagia Sophia? In other words, void of a sizeable portion of its Islamic paraphernalia when converted to a museum in 1935, has the rug now also been pulled from under all secularism in whichever form, for ever more? The Hagia Sophia was for some the epitome of a new secular order after the collapse of the Ottoman Empire. But what observers may fail to consider is the exact nature of the secularism of the time, one which the present-day decision is seen as a corrective by the countrys religious conservatives. Likewise, the corrective at hand does not guarantee some sort of a revanchist attack on all things secular; there is no compulsion in religion as mandated in the Holy Quran, and faith cannot be defined by those who abuse it.

In any case, it can beggar belief that such knock-down arguments are made. But one must still consider the power of symbology, for symbology is the motor of the controversy here that can both illuminate and obscure the perennial and immaterial ideals at play. But to consider Christianity in Turkey solely through the site of Hagia Sophia forgoes all else related to the Christian faith in the country: both the positive (of which there most certainly is), and the negative (of which reminders rightly endure, perpetuated further as they may be in times of geopolitical tension).

At the same time, to view the Hagia Sophia as nothing more than the epitome of a historical imperial Christendom now to be replaced with its Islamic counterpart, egged on by the pejoratives of neo-Ottomanism, political Islam, or reduction of any and all developments into the person of the Turkish President (reductio ad Erdoanum), or the notion of power, is as truncated as it sounds. Eerily, there are comparable imperial sentiments here that cannot entirely explain modern statecraft, cannot acknowledge the diversity of Turkish political ideology and what may unite it, nor account for the full causality of geopolitical developments.

In any case, there is an element of national fervour across the board, one that is not necessarily shared by all, but one that may override temperance. But be it the end of secularism, the rise of Islam - how illuminating have such sweeping end game slogans peddled in their various forms really been in reality, and how helpful will they be now? After the dust of the decision settles, perhaps the latent exaggerations at play will assuage. There, hidden beneath the malaise of todays fury is the apt consideration that the issue is now in some sense settled.

Opponents of AK Party and/or the reconversion might find solace in the thought that the event may no longer be made the stuff of politics, expressed in the form of political exploitation. Proponents of the AK Party and/or the reconversion may equally be content that with worship in the Hagia Sophia now secured, worship there is no longer the stuff of politics. Well-established political differences as prevalent in all countries will certainly find other avenues of expression, one hopes to occur in the least polarising of manners.

There have been many expressions of the kind that warn of the antagonistic nature of the age we now live in. Both international geopolitics and domestic political developments constitute the context that events should be examined within. But as expressed by Turkish officials themselves, the Hagia Sophia still remains the common heritage of humanity, non-Muslims and those of no faith are all still welcome, and the aesthetic beauty of the site will remain for all to revere. As a mosque, the Hagia Sophia will now live as a house of God; a positive development if ones theology or metaphysics allows it.

New Book Tells the Story of Beaver Island’s King Strang – MyNorth.com

Miles Harvey didnt set out to write a Mormon story when he started researching James Jesse Strang, the self-proclaimed king of earth and heavenand Beaver Island.

I didnt see him as a weird Midwestern story or (Mormon) story. I saw him as a lightning rod for all the enthusiasm, prejudices, activities of that era, Harvey says.

That era, the mid-1800s, was an era of change, upheaval and uncertainty. Sound familiar?

I dont know if I would have written the same book if I hadnt been living through the Trump era. But conversely, Strang helped me understand Trump. It helped me think through Trump, Harvey says.

Guys like (Strang) thrive in times of massive change when people want simple and hopeful answers to complex and depressing questions. He offered those things. A lot of his followers were the losers of the upheavals of the 19th century, people who had lost out economically, demographically. He told them they could be the people who ushered in the second coming of God. He offered a kind of new Jerusalem. It must have been really seductive.

Harvey still isnt sure whether Strang was a true believer of what he preached, especially because Strang had written extensively about his own atheism prior to joining the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (LDS).

We know a lot about Strangs beliefs from before Mormonism. He was an atheist. He told a reporter he was an atheist when he walked into Nauvoo (a Mormon settlement). He was well-versed in the Bible so he could talk a good game and if I was a believer at that time, with his King James-style writing thee and thou it would have taken me in.

And, while Miles Harvey is not a Mormon, he is not about to dismiss anyones faith.

I dont question anyones faith because I have it myself. I dont want anyone telling me Im silly so Im not going to tell anyone else theyre silly, Harvey says.

But The King of Confidence is not about LDS faith or even LDS history.

I was much less interested in Strang as part of Mormon history as such as a part of American history.

And he was fascinated by the eras confidence men.

Con man came into usage in 1849 in New York newspaperand spread rapidly. It was a time when confidence was a currency. It was a time of such dramatic change. You couldnt trust anything except your confidence in someone. Confidence Man. Confidence Artist. There was even a play three months after the word came into usage.

Harveys research took him deep into old newspapers, genealogy and collections, including an impressive one at Central Michigan University.

Strang and his people were savers, probably because they thought they were ushering in the Second Coming, Harvey says. There are two great archives, one at Yale because his first biographer, Milo Quaife, gave his papers to Yale. CMU also has a great collection. Another thing is the 19th-centurynewspaper databases. I was able to discover some stuff about Strang sitting in my underwear in my basement at 1 a.m. Some of the stuff was counterintuitive. If you were only looking in only Michigan newspapers, you would have missed stuff.

Harvey only made one trip to Beaver Island when he was researching The King of Confidence. He said Strangs legacy can be seen widely in place names, including the islands village, St. James, and the main road, Kings Highway.

He also fell in love with The Book of Mormon, the sacred text of the LDS church. Its an amazing literary document, he says. Im an English teacher, so thats where Im coming from. To reimagine the Bible as an ongoing story and set it in North America takes some imagination.

Who is the villain?

When I listened to President Trump speak at Mt. Rushmore over the July 4th weekend, he once again made comments that I found not only highly offensive, but also not true.

His comment that "children are taught in school to hate their own country and to believe the men and women who built it were not heroes but villains" is the one that most struck at my heartstrings.

As a retired teacher and administrator who spent 45 years working with students, I can guarantee that while I was teaching in the classroom and while I was principal, students were taught to love and appreciate not only our country and its history, but also the peoples of all races, colors, and creeds who are part of that history. I have no doubt that that is the case in most all classrooms in Kansas and throughout the country. When looking at the Kansas Department of Education standards for History, Government, and Social Studies there is no mention of hating ones country nor is there a list of individuals considered to be villains.

Makes one wonder what the basis for such a comment is! I am proud to have been a lifelong educator working to instill a foundation of knowledge and values into students that undoubtedly has given them the opportunity to be informed, knowledgeable, and contributing citizens in our communities, states, and country which, by the way, fits in with the standards they are being taught.

Under the Constitution's Establishment Clause, government cannot favor the religious beliefs of some at the expense of the rights, beliefs and health of others. Yet, 50 years after access to contraception was recognized as a constitutional right, the Catholic Church continues exploiting authority over sexuality.

The Supreme Court recently affirmed the Trump administration's rules which create a religious or moral exemption from the Affordable Care Act's contraception coverage guarantee for any employer or university that wants it. And the new rules don't require any third-party accommodation to provide workers or students with coverage for this critical care, as does the ACA.

Houses of worship are exempted from complying with the ACA's contraception benefit. And the government offers other religiously affiliated employers with religious objections to contraception an accommodation: simply sign a written notice of the objection and government would work with a third-party provider to ensure access to reproductive coverage without involving the employer. But the Little Sisters of the Poor and other religious organizations said even signing the opt-out form was a burden and sued the government.

The hypocrisy of the Little Sisters and others claiming to be the injured parties in this legal battle over access to reproductive health care is that they already have the type of "church plan" insurance that allows them to exclude contraceptive care for their workers, hundreds of people who are not nuns or Catholics, and for many, who don't share their religious views on contraception.

What's at issue in this case is the difference between religious freedom and religious privilege.

Voters Beware!

By now we have all had postcards in the mail or door hangers left on our doors, some filled with lies paid for by Topeka special interest groups. These big-money, special interests want politicians beholden to them, not to us the constituents.

There is more to the story being told on those postcards. Call the candidates here at their homes. Ask them for the truth. Like every election, these big-money special interest groups want us to believe half-baked truths and outright lies: whatever it takes to make us believe their lies so they can buy the election and buy our politicians.

I recently ran into a young man dropping literature for them-he was being paid by a Topeka special interest group and was from Johnson County. He had no vested interest in our communities. If these far-away Topeka special interest groups are supporting one candidate or lying about another, they are doing it so that we might elect a pawn for them.

We need to elect candidates that stand up for us. As my husband, Greg Lewis, said when he resigned from the Kansas House of Representatives due to illness, "This is not the house of special interest. This is the Peoples House; long may it serve the People and the Great State of Kansas."

In August make your vote count. Dont buy the lies. Elect candidates who will work for us and are NOT beholden to Topeka special interest groups.

Antifa Is NOT Imaginary

What do Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, and the Tooth Fairy all have in common? They are not real; they are imaginary.

On June 25, Democrat Senator Jerry Nadler from New York made one of the most asinine statements I have ever heard. Mr. Nadler intimated that antifa was "imaginary". In other words, Mr. Nadler would have you believe that antifa (that "peaceful", anti-Fascist mob which vandalized, looted, pillaged, and set fires to many businesses in cities throughout the United States) did NOT actually do any of these dastardly deeds.

Nadler would like to think that what American citizens saw with their own eyes on TV was a "figment of their imagination""--that they are actually dumb enough to "buy into" this outrageous statement. Really, Senator Nadler, do you honestly think that the Antifa mob threw "imaginary" bricks through storeowners' windows? Tell the store owners these bricks were "imaginary".

Do you really think that the lootings and fires that were set by antifa rioters were "imaginary". Tell the store owners (many who had invested years of sweat and labor into making their businesses successful, only to have their livelihoods destroyed in one night) that the lootings and fires were "imaginary". Senator Nadler, you are insulting the intelligence of the American people if you think they are "buying" any of this nonsense.

If there is one thing that I wish was "imaginary", Senator Nadler, it is you! Unfortunately, Senator Nadler is "real", as is the radical left-wing drivel spewing out of his mouth.

In his role as President of Hutchinson Community College, I was always impressed with how Dr. Ed Berger leveraged limited resources to achieve great results. When he decided to run for the Kansas Senate four years ago, I was pleased because the Brownback administration had clearly gone off the rails and we needed elected officials like Ed Berger to step up and clean up the mess. Ed and his colleagues have had to make some tough votes to bring Kansas back to financial soundness. They have done that.

Now Eds opponent, who has not bothered to vote in many previous elections, seems to want to take us back to the "Brownback Years." Apparently, he doesnt know that experiment failed and Kansas is still digging its way out of the economic hole it created.

I hope you will join me in voting for a man of real integrity, Ed Berger.

Presidential Election Could Be a Game Changer

The upcoming presidential election on November 3rd is the most important election in American history since 1860 and 1864. This is because our very existence as a constitutional republic created by our U.S. Constitution in 1789 is at stake.

The progressive (actually regressive) left-wing Democrat Party wants the United States government to change to a socialist/Marxist government. They attack our very U. S. Constitution as out-dated and old-fashioned created by 56 white men, some who owned slaves. Thus, they say it is a racist document. This is nonsense!

The history of the Democrat Party reveals that it has always been racist. They were supporters of slavery before and during the U.S. Civil War (1861-1865). After the Civil War they established the Ku Klux Klan and segregation to keep newly freed former slaves from voting. This is in our history books that the Democrat Party wishes to hide. They want to destroy our history by rewriting it. Part of this destruction of our nations history is seen by the rioters who have destroyed statues of past Americans.

The Democrats resort to intimidation of people through violent groups such as antifa (which get lots of financial support from anti-American government multi-billionaire George Soros) as well as Black Lives Matter, an organization whose background is heavily pro-Marxist in its ideology. As a matter of fact, its three co-founders are extremely pro-Marxist in their comments. Thus, weve got to save our country and its freedoms by defeating the Democrats in November.

Fact-checking the weeks lies, misinformation – Waynesboro Record Herald

The swab used to diagnose COVID-19 goes so far back into the nose that it can be uncomfortable, but it doesn't touch the area known as the blood-brain barrier.

A roundup of some of the most popular but completely untrue stories and visuals of the week. None of these are legitimate, even though they were shared widely on social media. The Associated Press checked them out. Here are the facts:

Claim: The nasal swab test commonly used for to diagnose COVID-19 involves obtaining a sample from a protective layer of cells known as the blood-brain barrier, which can result in inflammation of the brain.

The facts: The swab used to diagnose COVID-19 goes so far back into the nose that it can be uncomfortable, even causing some people's eyes to water. But it doesn't touch the area known as the blood-brain barrier, where blood vessels and the brain exchange important nutrients, despite social media posts that claim it does. This week, Facebook posts viewed more than a million times shared a diagram of the nasopharyngeal swab test next to an anatomical picture of the brain, suggesting the swab disrupts the blood-brain barrier. "The blood-brain barrier is exactly where the swab has to be placed," the image read, with a raised eyebrow emoji. "Coincidence??? I don't think so." However, Morgan Katz, M.D., an assistant professor of medicine at Johns Hopkins University, said these posts fundamentally misunderstand what's happening when the test is conducted. The swab "would have to go through layers of muscle and fascia, as well as the base of the skull, which is a thick bone, in order to get anywhere near the blood-brain barrier, and I would say that it is not possible," Katz told the Associated Press. Instead of the brain, the test collects a sample from the nasopharynx, an area between the back of the nose and the back of the throat where respiratory viruses often live. "That's just a place where we expect to see the highest yield of respiratory viruses," she said.

Claim: Wearing a face mask for extended periods of time can cause pleurisy, an inflammation of the lining around the lung.

The facts: Multiple experts told the Associated Press there is no medical evidence that wearing a face mask could lead to this condition, despite Facebook posts claiming it could. "Be careful healthy people, shared from a friend," read one Facebook post, which described a story of a healthy 19-year-old frontline grocery store worker who started feeling sick and was diagnosed with pleurisy. "They basically tell her.. It's because she's been wearing a mask for over 8 hours a day 5-6 days a week. Breathing in her own bacteria. Carbon dioxide.. Caused an infection." Another Facebook post featured a diagram of a lung with an inflamed lining. "Result of wearing mask for 8 hours a day," the caption read. "Why are they not reporting the number of people being hospitalized for this?? YOU NEED FRESH AIR." But doctors who study the respiratory system say a face mask doesn't pose this risk. "There is absolutely no truth in that claim," said Humberto Choi, a pulmonologist at Cleveland Clinic, in an email. "There are thousands of health care workers wearing face masks everyday including masks that are much tighter than simple surgical masks. Nobody is getting pleurisy because of that." "I don't see a medically plausible mechanism for mask wearing to cause pleurisy," said Albert Rizzo, chief medical officer at the American Lung Association. Claims that mask-wearing leads to harmful conditions, including bacterial and fungal infections, pneumonia, hypercapnia and other ailments are also false, according to AP reporting.

Claim: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention sent out COVID-19 tests "seeded" with the virus.

The facts: Social media users shared an illustration of a COVID-19 nasal swab test where a 6-inch-long swab is placed into the cavity between the nose and mouth with false information that the CDC sent out tests that contained the live virus. The post asserts that COVID-19 tests are tainted and could expose people to the virus. According to one Instagram post that shared the illustration with false information: "COVID-19 test has the virus ... the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention sent states tainted lab tests in early February that were themselves seeded with the virus, federal officials have confirmed." The Instagram caption further states: "... if one person in the family could have gotten tested with one of those tainted 'Planted' COVID-19 tests that would potentially expose the entire family to the virus" In February, the CDC distributed a batch of faulty COVID-19 test kits to laboratories, but the kit did not contain the live virus. The contaminated tests were not sent out to patients. The CDC produced two types of test kits in January. There was no evidence that the first batch had any issues. The second type of test kit, which was developed to be manufactured by the CDC, was contaminated. The Department of Health & Human Services published an investigation of the failed rollout on June 19. The report states: "After receiving these tests from CDC in early February, public health laboratories attempted to validate the test kits before using them on real specimens. They could not validate the test a negative control gave a positive result and thus, the test kits were not used and no patient received an inaccurate test result." According to the review, "One of the three reagents in this initial batch of manufactured test kits was likely contaminated. These tests are so sensitive that this contamination could have been caused by a single person walking through an area with positive control material and then later entering an area where tests reagents were being manipulated," the report states. Positive control material is the synthetic, non-infectious part of the virus. Yvonne Maldonado, M.D., professor of pediatric infectious diseases and of health research and policy at Stanford University School of Medicine, told the AP this is not the live virus. The false post implies that nasal swab tests are tainted with the virus. "We only use sterile swabs," Maldonado explained. "That's actually the problem with getting the swab is that we have to make sure that they've been sterilized. We can't just take Q-tips from a box."

Claim: "Teachers are the number one occupation of the antifa terrorist organization according to the FBI."

The facts: False. There is no evidence that teachers make up an outsized portion of antifa, a shorthand term for "anti-fascists." The FBI told the Associated Press it "has not made any such statements about the occupations of people who are attracted to particular ideologies." This false claim has gone viral online recently, both as part of longer blog posts promoting conspiracy theories around COVID-19 and the death of George Floyd, and independently on Facebook and Twitter. On Facebook alone, posts connecting teachers with antifa have been viewed more than a million times in the past week. But the posts don't reflect the way the FBI actually investigates criminal activity or people who identify as antifa, which has become an umbrella term for left-leaning militant groups that oppose neo-Nazis and white supremacists at demonstrations. While FBI director Christopher Wray recently told Fox News the agency is investigating various "violent anarchist extremists, some of whom self-identify or otherwise link to the antifa movement," the agency does not initiate investigations solely based on an individual's identity. "Our focus is not on membership in particular groups but on individuals who commit violence and criminal activity that constitutes a federal crime or poses a threat to national security," the FBI told the AP in a statement. Accordingly, the FBI said it has not made any statements about the occupations of people who are drawn to particular ideologies, such as anti-fascism. Though President Donald Trump has tweeted that the United States will designate antifa as a terrorist organization, it does not qualify for inclusion on the State Department's foreign terror organizations list because antifa is a domestic movement.

Claim: Anthony Fauci, M.D., is married to Ghislaine Maxwell's sister.

The facts: Fauci is married to Christine Grady, chief of the bioethics department at the National Institutes of Health Clinical Center. Fauci's role as the nation's top infectious disease expert has made him a target of false information. Social media users are now attempting to link Fauci to conspiracy theories tied to Jeffrey Epstein, the financier who died in jail after being charged with sex trafficking underage girls. Posts online say that Fauci's wife is related to Ghislaine Maxwell, a British socialite who was arrested last week and charged with helping recruit girls for Epstein. Maxwell is one of seven siblings, including twin sisters Christine and Isabel. Their father Robert Maxwell was a billionaire publishing magnate whose nude body was recovered from waters off the Canary Islands in November 1991. He had disappeared from his yacht named Lady Ghislaine. The Associated Press reported at the time that Robert Maxwell had four daughters and three sons. Two of Maxwell's children died: Michael, who died in 1968 at age 21, and Karine, who died in 1957 at age 3, of leukemia. His daughter Christine is not Christine Grady. The National Institutes of Health interviewed Grady in 1997 about her life where she said she grew up in New Jersey as one of five children. "But when I was fairly young, I thought I wanted to be a nurse, and my mother encouraged it the most, even though she was not one herself. She thought nursing was a noble profession and a good thing for me to do. So she encouraged that," Grady says in the oral history interview. Grady served on the Presidential Commission for the Study of Bioethical Issues from 2010 to 2017 and received a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing and biology as well as a doctorate in philosophy from Georgetown University. Former GOP candidate DeAnna Lorraine tweeted the photo of Fauci and Grady Sunday, saying Grady was Maxwell's sister. Lorraine later corrected the tweet. "Looks like the connection may not be accurate w Fauci' wife/Maxwell. When ppl sent me this I researched it & it checked out at first, I'm sorry for getting excited about the connection & jumping gun," she later tweeted. Posts making the false claim online shared a 2016 photo, which can be found in the Getty Images archive, of Fauci with Grady at the White House state dinner held by then-President Barack Obama for the prime minister of Italy, Matteo Renzi. "No coincidences," one post with 1,429 likes on Instagram said sharing the photo of the two.

Claim: The dress Melania Trump wore during Fourth of July celebrations featured drawings by various victims of child sex trafficking.

The facts: The sketches on the dress were made by art students in a class, not by victims of sex trafficking. On July 3, during a visit to Mount Rushmore to commemorate the Fourth of July, First Lady Melania Trump wore a white dress with black lines, black shoes and a black belt. Social media users criticized both the appearance and the price of the garment, which cost $3,840. Others claimed the dress featured drawings from sex trafficking victims. "The media mocked First Lady Melania's dress," read one Facebook post with more than 8 million views. "They said it looked like childish scribbles. Little did they know, they were the drawings of several young victims of sex trafficking who tried to explain their pain through pictures." But posts like this are not correct the dress actually shows sketches of "dancing girls" made by design students from the British art school Central Saint Martins. The students worked with Julie Verhoeven, a fashion illustrator, during a class at the Alexander McQueen flagship store in London. In early May, Paper magazine published a story explaining that the sketches of dancers were first made on sheets. "Afterwards, Creative Director Sarah Burton enlisted the entire McQueen staff to hand-embroider and stitch over the sketches of a single ivory linen dress," the story reads.

Claim: Kansas City Chiefs CEO and owner Clark Hunt told NFL players, coaches and staff that they are all "simply paid performers on a stage" and he will "immediately fire" anyone who does not stand, with their hand over their heart, during the playing of the national anthem.

The facts: Hunt did not hold such a meeting, although he has publicly expressed support for Chiefs players standing during the national anthem. Facebook users for years have circulated a false letter that claims to reveal the Kansas City Chiefs owner called a dramatic meeting to tell NFL players they need to stand during the anthem or face immediate dismissal from the team. The hoax is gaining traction, again, on Facebook before the football season resumes and after NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell apologized last month for the way the league has handled peaceful protests over racial injustice. They included players taking a knee in 2016 during the national anthem an effort led by former 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick. Goodell made the comments this year, the day after Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes urged the league to condemn racism. The letter first began circulating on Facebook in 2016, as debate over football players' decision to kneel during the anthem raged. At the time, Hunt told the Kansas City Star the posts were a hoax. "I have heard about it," Hunt told the Kansas City Star in 2016. "It was an Internet hoax." Brad Gee, the director of football communications for the Kansas City Chiefs, also confirmed to the Associated Press that the contents of the viral letter are inaccurate. Hunt has publicly stated in years past that he prefers players to stand during the national anthem but several Chiefs players have sat or taken a knee during the national anthem, without being fired, including star tight end Travis Kelce. In 2017, after Trump called on NFL owners to fire players who didn't stand during the national anthem, Hunt responded with a formal statement, saying he believes in "honoring the American flag" but encouraged everyone to "work together to solve these difficult issues."

The Spiritual Danger of Monuments | Daniel Williams – Patheos

Monuments to flawed heroes of the past are spiritually dangerous but removing them may lead to even greater spiritual blindness.

At a time of new expressions of deep anger over a centuries-long history of racial injustice, perhaps it is not surprising that calls for the removal of Confederate monuments calls that are based on a legitimate historical argument that those monuments are symbols of white supremacy have, in at least a few cases, morphed into a larger call to remove a much broader array of celebratory statues of white presidents and founders, including Thomas Jefferson andGeorge Washington. And, on the other side of the political spectrum, there is now a counterreaction to build new monuments to the heroes of the past. This month President Donald Trump issued an executive order calling for a new statuary park to honor an array of presidents and traditional American heroes, including Washington. How should Christians react to all of this?

Perhaps the right answer is to neither defend the sins of the founders nor topple their statues, but instead to use this moment to reconsider the message and purpose of memorials altogether. Perhaps we can arrive at a new understanding that is rooted in humility and an acknowledgement of societal and individual sin that will lead to repentance rather than either self-righteousness or hero worship.

Americans in general and evangelical Protestants in particular have been rightfully wary of monuments to an individual. For centuries, theological heirs of John Calvin eschewed images in their churches and refused to bestow the title saint on any individual Christian. And for more than one hundred years, no American coins featured an individual persons face a sharp break from the centuries-old European practice of adorning coins with the face of a monarch. It was not until 1909, after more than a century of making coins adorned with Lady Liberty or an American eagle, that the American mint finally produced its first coin with the image of a historical person by putting Abraham Lincolns face on the penny. It was also not until 1879 nearly one hundred years after the Constitution was signed and the first president inaugurated that Congress created the first federal holiday honoring a historical individual (in this case, George Washingtons birthday).

Today, of course, we are very familiar with the practice of creating holidays, monuments, commemorative stamps, and coins to honor noteworthy Americans of the past, but its worth noting that this practice inevitably takes us into the dangerous territory that bothered Calvin that is, the practice of shifting our gaze from the perfect sovereign God to a sinful human. Inevitably, in our investigation of the persons flaws, we will discover what Jesus said: No one is good except God alone.

Furthermore, as the moral concerns of the moment change, our understanding of the gravity of particular sins will also change. The prevailing sins of our own culture and time period especially the sins in which we ourselves participate will probably seem relatively mild. We will not see their gravity. We will not see the dishonor that they give to Gods name and the damage that they do to other people. But the further removed we are from those sins, the more we will see their full ugliness.

Yet as we rightly point out the horror of sins of previous generations (such as the kidnapping, enslavement, and sale of millions of Africans or the white rape of numerous black women both during and after slavery), there is a temptation for us to forget that sin is just as present in our hearts as it was in the hearts of the eighteenth and nineteenth-century slaveholders. The sins of the American nation are not confined to racial injustice (as heinous a sin as that is) which means that we have not really expunged evil from our nation when we get rid of all of the historical monuments to everyone tainted with that particular sin.

Instead, as sinful people, we are prone to adopt (and excuse) a new societal sin whenever it seems that we are on the verge of finally acknowledging and turning from one of the sins of our past. To look at only one example of this phenomenon, lets consider American society of the mid-twentieth century (an era when many liberals viewed themselves as enlightened champions of egalitarianism) and consider that cultures blindness to one particular sin that is a clear violation of a biblical command and that most people today, even if they are not Christians, would admit is wrong: adulterous violation of a persons marriage vows, especially between a man who exercises a position of power and a woman in his organization or circle of influence who occupies a position of significantly less power. This has always been a sin. Its a violation of one of the Ten Commandments, its a direct assault on gospel-centered principles of sexual behavior, and its an exploitation of others that contradicts the Golden Rule. Mid-twentieth-century American Christian men should have known not to engage in it. But at the time, this sin became so deeply engrained in a culture of male privilege that it became more of the norm than an exception among egalitarian minded, influential men who could see the need for justice on issues of racial oppression but turned a blind eye to their own sins when it came to their marriage vows and their sexual exploitation of women.

Only one of the US presidents who was in office during the thirty-six-year period between 1933 and 1969 was likely monogamous; all of the others appear to have cheated on their wives at some point. So pervasive was this culture that there is now credible historical evidence that every twentieth-century president whose image has ever been put on the face of a coin or bill had at least one extramarital affair or long-term paramour and, in several of these cases, numerous dalliances. The same was true of congressional politicians, journalists, business executives, movie stars, athletes, professors, and clergy.

We are only beginning to discover the full horrors of the mid-twentieth-century sexist attitudes and practices that encouraged powerful men to think of young women as sex objects who existed solely for their pleasure and to view their marriage vows as non-binding suggestions, at best. In the mid-twentieth century, male politicians and business leaders had sex with their secretaries, male professors had sex with their graduate students, and male clergy had sex with the women who came to their offices for counseling. In the South, numerous upstanding gentlemen (some of them church leaders) fathered children through coerced sex with their black maids who were trying to care for their own families while earning only $100 a year (which would be equivalent to an annual salary of less than $2,000 today). In the Catholic Church, at least 4,000 Catholic priests and bishops abused a collective total of more than 10,000 children between the 1950s and the end of the twentieth century. The extent of similar abuse in Protestant denominations is still being uncovered and will probably not be known for several years. And in all of this, male leaders amassed power for themselves, both by preserving very low glass ceilings in their organizations and, in far too many cases, making womens advancement in their organizations conditional on sexual favors.

Just as the sin of racism was so deeply engrained in the culture of eighteenth and nineteenth-century America that it is impossible to find more than a very small handful of white men of those centuries who were not in some way tainted by it, so the sins of sexism and adultery were so pervasive in mid-twentieth-century America that quite possibly the majority of the male politicians and civil rights leaders who are viewed as champions of racial equality were also participants in it. Were deeply affected by cultural sin. And, perhaps most disturbing, it is near-certain that we ourselves are tainted by our cultures sins; were just not yet fully aware of the horrors or extent of those sins.

So what does this mean for monuments? Is there anyone whom we can safely commemorate? If were looking for someone untainted by the sins of the culture, the answer is no. As sinners, we are prone to many ways of rebelling against God and hurting others, but we are especially vulnerable to the particular temptations of our culture, whatever those might be. And if we are in positions of power and influence, we are even more vulnerable to temptations to claim sinful prerogatives for ourselves, since we have the power to do so.

In the past, Americans were probably too eager to erect monuments of particular people too eager to ignore the warnings about idolizing a human being. But today, we may be in danger of being too eager to tear them down or at least, too eager to tear them down for the wrong reasons.

George Washington was certainly guilty of some of the common sins of an eighteenth-century Virginia planter; he kept people enslaved for decades and pursued runaways when some of his enslaved workers tried to escape his oppression. But he also demonstrated a remarkable willingness to sacrifice his own interests and renounce power that very few of us possess to the same degree. And, at the end of his life, he made arrangements for all of his hundreds of slaves to be freed upon the death of his wife.

Theres something that we, as fellow sinners, can learn from Washingtons example of humility, growth, and self-sacrifice. And theres something that we can also learn from reflecting on the fact that he, like the rest of us, was deeply affected by the sins of his own time. To pretend that our country is not deeply connected to Washington including both his sins and his virtues would be historically nave. And to pretend that we have been more successful than Washington in participating in our own generations sins would probably be an arrogant act of presumption. Once we recognize how pervasive cultural sin is, well be more understanding of both the virtues and vices of a sinner like Washington and more willing to humbly recognize what we can learn from his life.

The good news of scripture is that God uses terrible sinners including murderers, adulterers, chauvinists, racists, and plenty of other people like ourselves in a cosmic story of redemption. This doesnt mean that every sinner should be memorialized or that every monument to an unrepentant sinner should necessarily be preserved. But it does suggest that of all people, Christians should be both the first to acknowledge the evils of our ancestors and the first to realize that we ourselves are probably guilty of equal evils that God has forgiven through the cross. And perhaps that realization will be the first step toward exercising the grace and wisdom in dealing with the thorny questions that may surround each particular monument.

Personally, I would vote to keep the statue of George Washington. I would do so with the acknowledgement that in addition to celebrating Washingtons achievements, we need to confess the societal sins in which he was a participant and, as a nation, repent of the ongoing legacy of those sins.

And if were going to erect any new monuments as spiritually dangerous as that practice might be I would propose creating statues of two of Washingtons African American contemporaries who had a lot less political power than he did, but who showed remarkable faith and courage precisely because of their lack of power: Phillis Wheatley and Elizabeth Freeman.

Like all of us, they were products of their time, with imperfect spiritual vision. They were not equivalent to Jesus. But theres undoubtedly something that we can learn from them, too. Like Washington, they played a critical role in shaping our countrys history. To excise their stories from the history books (as occurred for far too long) would be to show just as much spiritual and historical blindness as toppling Washingtons statue.
