Phone Companies Developing New Technology To Block Robocalls – News On 6

Thursday, July 16th 2020, 11:26 am

By: CBS News

If you've been looking for a silver lining in the coronavirus pandemic it may be this: the number of robocalls have dropped. But that win may be short lived.

When the pandemic closed stores in the spring, it also shut down call centers. According to YouMail, robocalls dropped 40% between February and April. But with the economy reopening, the numbers are creeping back up. In June, 45% of those robocalls were scams.

Now T-Mobile is offering something new to its customers, including those with recently acquired Sprint. The company is calling it ScamShield. T-Mobile's chief marketing officer, Matt Staneff, says the free service will block some scam calls and provide a caller ID for every number. "That means every call that comes in will have a name attached to it and you won't have to play the guessing game, he says.

Customers can also get a second phone number, so you don't have to give your main number to strangers. "That way you can keep your personal number personal, Staneff says.

CNETs Roger Cheng says, There's recognition by the industry that robocalls have hit a point where they're just one of, if not the most, annoying aspects of having cell phone service." He says all phone carriers are making robocall blocking a priority. Many companies, including T-Mobile, offer technology that verifies a number is real and not spoofed. The question is, will all that new tech work?

"I think you are going to see a continued cat-and-mouse game here where some of these scammers will work to get ahead of some these systems, the carriers will, again, try to counteract that, Cheng says. The fact that these carriers are all on the same page definitely gives me some hope that the volume of robocalls will go down." But Cheng and other experts don't expect those annoying calls will completely go away.

In December, President Trump signed a bill requiring phone companies to adopt technology that can identify spam calls.

Precision technology is hailed in potato project – Press and Journal

A project assessing the use of precision farming technology to predict potato tuber size has been hailed a success.

The 12-month Tuberzone project was funded through the Scottish Governments Knowledge Transfer Innovation Fund.

It was led by SAC Consulting, Brechin-based precision farming firm SoilEssentials and Montrose-based farmers co-operative Grampian Growers.

It set out to support the uptake of Tuberzone technology among growers on the east of Scotland from the Black Isle in the north to Angus in the south.

The technology uses a combination of GPS and satellite and drone imagery to monitor potato growth from crop emergence through the growing season to burn down.

It aims to help farmers predict tuber size and accurate burn-down time to maximise yields and profit margin.

During the project, the technology successfully predicted the graded-out size of Gemson a salad potato variety owned by Grampian Growers within 90% accuracy for the majority of growers involved.

Tuber size is critical for Gemson as only potatoes up to 45mm in size are useable for the salad market.

The challenge of seed and salad potato production is knowing exactly when to stop the crop growing, and a few days either way can make a big difference to the total value of the crop, said SoilEssentials managing director Jim Wilson.

Tuberzone allows us to see what is going on under the ground and aids the decision on haulm destruction by giving an individual yield and size distribution for each crop over the next two weeks.

This helps in deciding what date the crop needs to be burned down, taking into account the forecast weather conditions and how quickly the other potato crops are developing.

He said the project also helped improve test digs. At present, growers make random test digs throughout the season and then weigh and measure tubers manually to predict size and when to burn down the crop.

GPS technology was used to help growers target the best location for these digs.

Forfar grower Matthew Steel from Craignathro Farm, who participated in the project, said: The best moment was when we received the result sheets and discovered the model was only 5% out.

Having such an accurate prediction before burning down the crop is really helpful for delivering what our customer wants, at the size and quality they want.

Hackers targeted Twitter employees to hijack accounts of Elon Musk, Joe Biden and others in digital currency scam – CNBC

Twitter shares sank Thursday, a day after hackers gained access to more than a dozen high-profile accounts, including those of Jeff Bezos, Bill Gates, Joe Biden, former President Barack Obama, Elon Musk and the corporate account ofApple.

The accounts displayed tweets telling followers to send bitcoin to a specific address.

Share prices were down more than 5% in Thursday's premarket.

Musk was the first hacking victim Wednesday, when a tweet was posted early in the afternoon on the Tesla CEO's account promising to double any payments sent to a bitcoin address.

Twitter said late Wednesday its investigation uncovered an operation that targeted Twitter employees to gain access to internal systems and tools.

"We detected what we believe to be a coordinated social engineering attack by people who successfully targeted some of our employees with access to internal systems and tools," the company tweeted from a support account.

"We know they used this access to take control of many highly-visible (including verified) accounts and Tweet on their behalf."

Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey said that the company feels terrible about the hacked accounts.

Other accounts hacked included former New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg, musicians Kanye West and Wiz Khalifa, Berkshire Hathaway Chairman Warren Buffett, reality TV star Kim Kardashian, the Cash App corporate account, and Uber's corporate account. The bitcoin-related tweet was Apple's first ever tweet, although the account had placed ads in the past.

Rachel Tobac, CEO of cybersecurity firm SocialProof Security, told NBC News the attack was likely the largest Twitter had ever seen. "We are lucky the attackers are going after bitcoin (money motivated) and not motivated by chaos and destruction."

Theresa Payton, a former White House chief information officer and current CEO of Fortalice Solutions, warned that information such as direct messages may have been stolen from the affected accounts and could be released or used in the future.

"They're going to need to apologize to the VIPs and to the individuals who were defrauded and fell for the scam," Payton told CNBC. "The next thing they're going to need to do is to conduct a thorough and transparent investigation, and they're going to need to share what they can about who the attackers were and how they pulled this off."

Mel Shakir, a managing director at DreamIt Ventures and a veteran of the IT security industry, said high-profile users like those attacked on Wednesday should be using as many security options as possible, including biometric authentication like fingerprints, or using hardware keys instead of text messages for two-factor authentication. "Passwords are inherently insecure. But Twitter has provided all the security options that are available," Shakir said.

Earlier Wednesday, several cryptocurrency accounts simultaneously linked to a phishing site called CryptoForHealth.Cameron Winklevoss, co-founder of Gemini, a cryptocurrency market, said in a tweet: "ALL MAJOR CRYPTO TWITTER ACCOUNTS HAVE BEEN COMPROMISED." In the past, one popular cryptocurrency scam on Twitter involved attackers changing their display name and avatar to match Elon Musk, then they would reply to his tweets pretending to be him asking for bitcoin. But on Wednesday, the accounts tweeting about bitcoin were real.

All hacked accounts on Wednesday were verified. The tweets on Wednesday appeared to have been sent through a web browser accessing Twitter.com, not an app or third-party software. Around 3:15 p.m. PT, Twitter blocked all verified accounts from tweeting in an attempt to regain control. They were reactivated at 5:41 p.m. PT.

Here's a sampling of the tweets. Many have been deleted.

Apple's Twitter account was hacked.

Jeff Bezos' Twitter account was hacked.

Mike Bloomberg's Twitter account was hacked.

Barack Obama's Twitter account was hacked.

NBC News reporter Kevin Collier and CNBC's Lora Kolodny contributed to this report.

Clarification: The Wendy's tweet, while similar to the false tweets, was not identical and appears to have been a joke issued by the account itself.

Messages appearing on their accounts showed statements about bitcoin and promised to double payments sent to a bitcoin wallet address.

A screenshot of a tweet posted on the Twitter account of Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos.

SAN FRANCISCO - The Twitter accounts of several major companies and notable individuals were compromised on Wednesday in an apparent widespread hack involving a bitcoin scam.

The accounts of Tesla CEO Elon Musk, Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, former U.S. President Barack Obamaand former Vice President Joe Biden were among those targeted.

Messages appearing on their accounts showed statements about bitcoin and promised to double payments sent to a bitcoin wallet address.

One of the posts on Musks account appeared at 4:17 p.m. ET reading: Im feeling generous because of Covid-19. Ill double any BTC payment sent to my BTC address for the next hour. Good luck, and stay safe out there!

The tweet was then deleted, and quickly replaced by a related post.

Feeling grateful doubling all payments sent to my BTC address! You send $1,000, I send back $2,000! Only doing this for the next 30 minutes, the Tweet read.

A screenshot of a tweet posted on the Twitter account of former Vice President Joe Biden.

Similar posts on the accounts of Gates, Bezos and others echoed these messages, with an identical BTC address attached.

Bezos, Gates and Musk are among the 10 richest people in the world, with tens of millions of followers on Twitter. The three men are worth a combined $362 billion, according to the latest calculations by Forbes magazine.

Among the political figures targeted, the hack mostly appeared to target Democrats or other figures on the left, drawing comparisons to the 2016 campaign. U.S. intelligence agencies established that Russia engaged in coordinated attempts to interfere in those U.S. elections through social media tampering and various hacks, including targeting the various campaigns and major party organizations.

The Biden campaign said that Twitter's integrity team locked down the account within a few minutes of the breach and removed the related tweet.

Obama's office had no immediate comment.

In a tweet, Twitter noted only that it was aware of a security incident impacting accounts on Twitter. The San Francisco company said it is investigating and promised an update shortly. It did not reply immediately to requests for comment.

A spokesperson for Gates told Recode, We can confirm that this tweet was not sent by Bill Gates. This appears to be part of a larger issue that Twitter is facing. Twitter is aware and working to restore the account.

The accounts of Uber, Apple, Squares Cash App, rapper Kanye West and his wife Kim Kardashian were also targeted.

Within hours of the tweets appearing, nearly 300 people had fallen for the scam and sent more than $100,000 to the wallet, according to the New York Times.

Twitter told users that they may not be able to tweet or reset their passwords while the incident was being reviewed. One Twitter user noted that verified accounts "are now on lockdown and unable to tweet."

Tom Warren ofThe Vergelater posted saying that verified users were able to tweet again.

This story was reported from Cincinnati. The Associated Press contributed to this report.

The conservative alternative to Twitter wants to be a place for free speech for all. It turns out, rules still apply. – Boston.com

In late June, two days after Twitter put a fifth warning label on one of President Donald Trumps tweets, Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, tweeted that he was joining Parler, calling it a platform [that] gets what free speech is all about.

The social media site, which has been described as a conservative Twitter, is on a tear with people who say Twitter and Facebook are silencing conservative voices. In one week, it gained 1 million users, bringing its total to 2.8 million by early July.

Some of its most prominent users are part of the conservative establishment. Trump campaign director Brad Parscale is on Parler, as is Eric Trump, the presidents son, and White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany. Conservative commentator Dan Bongino announced in mid-June that he had taken an ownership stake in the company.

A crackdown by Twitter and, more reluctantly, Facebook, against messages from President Trump that the companies said violate their policies is fueling Parlers rise. Parler bills itself as a place for free expression without violence and a lack of censorship, key words that many conservatives have picked up as a rallying cry to promote the app online.

Parler chief executive and co-founder John Matze said the app welcomes all voices. But the company appears to cater to a right-wing base fed up with what they view as censorship on traditional social media sites.

We initially attracted conservative users because they felt disenfranchised by other social media platforms, Matze said in an email sent through a spokesperson.

But Parler is quickly discovering the limits of free expression. On June 30, Matze took to Parler to explain its house rules, apparently frustrated with some of Parlers new users testing the limits of its free-expression motto by posting pornographic images and obscenities.

Parler is facing the same evolution that bigger social media companies have confronted for years balancing free expression with creating safe and inviting online communities. Twitter early on referred to itself as the free-speech wing of the free-speech party. Facebook chief executive Mark Zuckerberg maintained through the companys early years that it is not a publisher, but a neutral platform. Facebook is still a place for free expression, Zuckerberg said in a speech last year, but he acknowledged that some speech that is harmful and infringes on others rights should not be allowed.

Online conversations are complicated. Facebook has a six-part document outlining its community standards. Twitter has eight sections under its set of rules that just oversee safety. Facebook and Google-owned YouTube pay tens of thousands of content moderators to review material on their sites and enforce their policies.

Sites that have operated on the fringe with lax rules and a strong stance that people should be able to say just about anything they want have often become platforms for hate, violence and vitriol, such as 8chan and Gab. Those sites are more susceptible to being shut down when their back-end providers decide not to support them. Last year, 8chan was knocked offline for three months by a server hardware provider after the site was condemned for allowing manifestos and live streams of deadly shootings to spread.

Henderson, Nev.-based Parler launched nearly two years ago with a private investment group that has grown over time to include Bongino and early bitcoin advocate Jeffrey Wernick, who wrote a Fox News opinion piece in support of Parler last week, saying that Twitter and Facebook are using technology intended to liberate, instead to subjugate.

The social media site did not burst into the spotlight until June, after Twitter had labeled five of the presidents tweets with warnings. Trump retaliated by signing an executive order that opened the door for an Internet shield law to be reconsidered. Facebook announced that it would start labeling posts from politicians who violate its policies. Republican politicians and pundits called the companies out, saying they were biased against conservatives.

Two Republicans on the House Judiciary Committee asked Parler last week to meet with the panel to discuss social media competition.

Parler differentiates itself on the quality and features of its platform namely, its commitment to not censor or editorialize, share or sell user data, Reps. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, and James Sensenbrenner, R-Wis., wrote. This commitment positions Parler in stark contrast to Twitter, which has made increasingly clear in recent weeks and months that only users who refrain from expressing certain unfavored political beliefs are welcome to fully participate on its platform.

Twitter spokeswoman Katie Rosborough reiterated what the company has insisted for years, that it is not biased against any group.

Twitter enforces the Twitter rules impartially for everyone on our service around the world, regardless of their background or political affiliation, she said.

Facebook has gone out of its way to accommodate conservative voices, notably Trumps, The Washington Post found. Facebook left Trumps May and June posts unlabeled including one that said when the looting starts, the shooting starts in reference to protests that erupted after the police killing of George Floyd. But after criticism from civil rights advocates and its own employees, the company announced an updated policy that will allow it to label posts from public figures that violate its policies but that it deems newsworthy.

Facebook declined to comment. The company has previously maintained that it is not biased against any group. Our policies, and how we apply them, can have a huge impact, so we have a responsibility to apply them evenly, without favoring one side or another and without devaluing the principle of free expression, Nick Clegg, the vice president of global affairs and communications at Facebook, wrote in a blog post about alleged bias last year.

Social media experts point out that many conservative politicians, notably Trump, perform well on Twitter because the company rewards posts that get more attention. Trumps account is among the most popular on Twitter, with more than 83 million followers.

Some users, including Matze, are calling for people to exit Twitter altogether, using the hashtag #Twexit on Parler. But it seems unlikely that a sizable number of people will leave Twitter. Even the politicians promoting Parler online still have active Twitter accounts. And Parler has a long way to go if it wants to appeal to the masses across a broad political spectrum.

Twitter has 166 million monthly average users, and Facebook has 2.6 billion each month. Parler says it has a total audience of 2.8 million users.

Im a big Twitter fan, but Twitter censors a lot, said Christina Herrera, an antiabortion advocate and new Parler user who lives in Hayward, Calif. Whatever they define as hate speech goes.

She said she is watching Parler closely to see how it holds up its free-expression mantra, but is hopeful. Still, she doesnt plan to leave Twitter, where most of the online conversation around her advocacy takes place. And shes hoping more-diverse voices join Parler.

I would rather there be a mix, she said. No one wants just an echo chamber.

Parlers app and website mimics Twitter in some ways a news feed shows recent updates from accounts that users follow, and much of it includes links to news articles or political statements. It has fewer personal updates or pictures than Facebook or Instagram. Users can make new posts, or parleys, or echo others posts, which works like a retweet on Twitter.

On Parler, new users are prompted to follow popular accounts, including Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., and far-right commentator Laura Loomer. People share news articles from right-leaning organizations including Breitbart News and the Daily Caller. Some decry rules for mandatory mask-wearing. There is a fair amount of discussion around calls to support the police and encouraging people to buy Goya products after its chief executive supported Trump.

Parleyers, as the company calls its users, also have more casual conversations; they discuss Bible verses, share recipes or devise ways to persuade Trump to join the app. (Trumps campaign has a Parler account, but the president does not.)

Parlers Matze said the app has broad ideological diversity and recently gained some members of Generation Z and Black Lives Matter supporters.

You know @parler has been a success when you see how many liberal snowflakes have come here to reply to every parley Nazi & Racist, a fan account for Trump posted on the site recently.

Although it has become the poster child for free expression online, Parler since its inception has had a long list of community guidelines that outline what it wont allow, including obscenity, terrorist content and fighting words, or calls to incite violence.

Those standards were tested in late June when Matze, apparently frustrated with some of the companys new customers, posted a response to complaints on Twitter from people who said they were banned on Parler.

Here are a few basic rules we need you to follow on Parler, he wrote. He added bullet points building off the companys existing guidelines, with more specificity, including, When you disagree with someone, posting pictures of your fecal matter in the comment section WILL NOT BE TOLERATED.

Some of Parlers new users are testing the bounds of its free-speech doctrine. Beth Bourdon, a public defense attorney in Orlando, Fla., who says she has leftist political views, joined along with a couple of friends to show them what free speech is.

Bourdon said she was banned from Parler without notice after she and some friends spoke up against many of the viewpoints on the site and she posted a photo that some could consider explicit.

Parler said it has brought on 200 volunteer content moderators. The companys support team posted on Parler that it needed volunteers because it is experiencing a high number of brigading attacks from individuals who wish to see us fail!

Matze said he does not see any conflict between the companys guidelines and promoting free speech.

The purpose of the restrictions is to create a proper town square without people ruining it by violating it with speech not protected by the First Amendment or FCC guidelines, while still allowing everyone to illustrate their point without experiencing any ideological censorship, he said in an email.

Parlers guidelines attribute many of its rules to Federal Communications Commission regulations and Supreme Court decisions, but social media companies are subject to very few laws when it comes to material posted on their sites. A law called Section 230 shields them from liability for nearly everything their users post online. Trump and his supporters including Cruz have criticized that law recently, saying it gives social media companies too much power.

Thats the irony content moderation is always necessary, said Daniel Kreiss, a media professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Just depends where you draw the line.

Free Speech and Due Process – 106.3 WORD

Released by SC AG Wilson.

(COLUMBIA, S.C.) South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilsontoday joined a 15-state legal brief filed with the United States District Court for the District of Columbia, urging the court to allow the Department of Education to reaffirm Title IXs commitment to protecting students from actual harassment while respecting free speech and fair process.

The Department of Educations Final Rule bolsters the anti-discrimination purposes of Title IX without infringing free speech or due process rights.

We think that some colleges and the U.S. Department of Education have been so intent on getting rid of anything offensive from campus that theyve trampled on the rights of students to free speech and due process, Attorney General Wilson said. Schools dont have to make a choice between fighting sexual harassment and protecting constitutional rights; we think they can do both.

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton led the 15-state effort and said, Academic institutions cannot deprive students of their constitutional rights to free speech, due process, or fair trial. The Final Rule provides robust protection for individual rights where previous regulations and guidance failed. The Supreme Court has long recognized that students subject to disciplinary proceedings are entitled to due process, as is every American citizen.

Without safeguards, academic institutions can and have eschewed due process and imposed life-altering consequences on students without affording them the opportunity to defend themselves.

The vast majority of colleges and universities currently deny students the right to present evidence or cross-examine witnesses, and less than half require that fact-finders be impartial during investigations.

The Young and the Restless News: Doug Davidson Recalls Pauls Ron Burgundy Look – Soap Hub

One of The Young and the Restless greatest storylines ever was the George Rawlins murder mystery. It began in the late 1980s and ran into early 1990. Doug Davidson, who calls the story Pauls first adult tale, has produced some mini-documentaries on the saga to share on his Instagram page.

In the latest installment, Davidson recalls how Paul and his dad, Carl (Brett Hadley), traveled to Bermuda to spy on Georges (Jonathan Farwell) widow Cassandra (Nina Arvesen) and her lover Adrian Hunter (Mark Derwin). The Stories Behind The Stories Episode 6 The Bermuda Triangle, Davidson titled his report.

As always, a massive thanks to @joymathys, @calyssadavidson, and Gareth Murphy for making this happen. And a special shout out this episode to airboyd.tv, the Elbow Beach Resort in Bermuda, and of course, Ron Burgundy!

In this segment, he jokes that a mustache he wore to disguise himself resembled the look Will Ferrell had in the film Ron Burgundy. On a more serious note, Carl and Paul were planning on Cassandra making a misstep and reveal that either she or Adrian or both of them were Georges true killers. Presumed dead, Paul rigged Cassandras room so shed hear his ghostly words from the other side. Slowly, but surely, Cassandra started to break.

Carl showed Paul a photo of Adrian and Cassandra dancing. In it, she was wearing earrings that were reported stolen the night George was killed. That turned out to be enough evidence to arrest Cassandra and book her for first-degree murder. But was Cassandra guilty of killing George? Davidson will reveal more in the next chapter.

The George Rawlins mystery was one of YRs most impactful stories. Davidsons videos do the saga justice and hit all of the tales major beats. Theyre also a hit with the actors fans. That was fun! says @debbiekuzio. I dont remember much of [emailprotected] back then so its nice to see you telling The Story Behind The Story. Thanks, I enjoy these!

Stay tuned for Davidsons next installment. Soap Hub will bring you a recap of it when it shows up. The Young and the Restless airs weekdays on CBS. Check local listings for air times.

Speedrack breaks ground at its Quincy expansion – Monroe Evening News

Speedrack groundbreaking in Quincy

With construction already underway, Speedrack held a groundbreaking Tuesday for its $20 million expansion in Quincy. [Don Reid photo]

QUINCY Delayed from March by the COVID 19 close down, Speedrack held an official groundbreaking for its $20 million expansion to its Quincy plant Tuesday morning.

The 130,000 square foot addition to its current 375,000 sq.ft. plant will add up to 80 new employees to the already 250 working there.

Quincy operations manager Eric Quist said since opening in 2003 with 25 employees "we have significantly increased benefits, and have increased hourly wages by approximately 175%."

The company started 35 years ago and pioneered tubular storage systems. Its considers Amazon and Medline as two of its many major customers.

Speedrack is already hiring new employees for the expansion so they will be ready when the new addition opens in 2021.

The new expansion will allow increase of its powder coat paint lines, robotic welding, and production expansion. The decision was made to expand Quincy after it opened an additional facility in Litchfield in 2017 which employs 25.

Quist credited the family owned business of the Ron Ducharme for putting 100% of its profits back into the business. "They made the decision to stay even in these uncertain times."

The company thanked Quincy for continued support with local infrastructure at its 42 Cole Street location.

Village Council President Karen Hargreave noted it started in 2002 when the village approved use of the brownfield site for the company plant.

In March the Michigan Department of Transportation awarded the village of Quincy a state transportation economic development fund grant totaling $325,972 to reconstruct Church Street between Cole and Broughton Streets to all-season standards, make drainage improvements, and install curb and gutter. This allowed the company to expand loading docks.

With more on line sales and warehousing, the state found there is increased demand for its tubular warehouse racks and rack systems throughout the United States and Canada. The Quincy plant takes rolled steel then forms, welds and paints them for shelving components.

Haines businesses will have another chance to apply for CARES Act funding – KHNS Radio

Haines businesses will have another chance to apply for CARES Act funding, the biomass project is officially terminated, and SEARHC will provide COVID-19 testing for asymptomatic travelers to Haines.

The Haines Borough Assembly voted to reopen the application window for Haines Small Business Emergency Grants, since over half the money remains unspoken for. That was at the request of Borough Finance Director Jila Stuart. She said there are several reasons that businesses have not applied.

Theres been a lot of confusion about whether or not accepting a municipal CARES Act grant will make a business ineligible for the Alaska CARES program which offers a lot more money than were offering, she said.

That remains unclear. Some businesses could not apply because their business licenses are not up to date. Some tax exempt businesseslike childcare and healthcare servicesdid not file their tax returns and were therefore ineligible for grants. The assembly voted against including them. The application will remain open until July 31st.

The Haines Borough will pay Southeast Regional Health Consortium $50,000 to test asymptomatic travelers at the Haines Health Clinic. In July SEARHC began offering free testing to asymptomatic on the weekend.

Acting borough manager Alekka Fullerton said the additional funds are to reduce testing delay for travelers who arrive midweek.

If someone comes in on the ferry for instance on Sunday, they would wait a whole week to be tested and a whole nother week to get their results back. Meanwhile theyd be running around Haines without testing or results, Fullerton said.

The motion passed unanimously.

The assembly voted to abandon a plan to heat municipal buildings using a biomass boiler. Assembly member Stephanie Scott was opposed. Public facilities director Ed Coffland said the years-long, repeatedly postponed project is uneconomical.

Assembly member Paul Rogers moved to nix the project.

We dont have another million and a half dollars and I dont see us having another million and a half dollars in the foreseeable future. I think its ridiculous to try to proceed to try to proceed and keep putting a band-aid on an arterial bleed, he said.

Coffland said roughly $900,000 in grant funding for the project will be returned to the grantor later this year.

Haines resident Ron Jackson requested that the assembly formally reprimand Assembly member Paul Rogers for the way he behaved around the firing of former borough manager Debra Schnabel.

Jackson said Rogers should be censured for attempting to usurp the supervisory authority of the assembly and for belittling the manager in a public meeting.

The assembly voted 4-2 against censuring Rogers with Zephyr Sincerny and Stephanie Scott in favor. Assembly member Gabe Thomas said a reprimand would only increase divisiveness.

‘It was an emotional decision’: Paul Hendrick on leaving Leafs Nation Network – The Athletic

Paul Hendrick took a deep breath.

Here goes.

He pressed the tweet button on his device and announced to the universe that his career covering the Maple Leafs on a full-time basis had come to an end. The 63-year-old wrote that he was stepping away from his job with Leafs Nation Network, and then he thanked everyone from the owners to the fans.

It was an emotional decision, he said in an interview a few hours later. But my iPad and phone have been dinging consistently for a couple of hours now.

Hendrick has been with the channel from its earliest days, from when it carried live games and marathon pregame shows to its evolution into the digital media space. He broadcast from morning practice, from postgame scrums and from everywhere in between.

Part of his decision was borne from a need to slow down. His wife, Dr. Alicia Sarabia, has been living with cancer. She is an infectious diseases...

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR: Brotherhood of man | Bully in White House | Follow Golden Rule – Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette

Brotherhood of man

In response to the letter by Mr. Karl T. Kimball: Now you have done it! You exposed that entire elusive Masonic secret, i.e., "Fatherhood of God and Brotherhood of Man." Now everyone knows. Of course, a few other things might go on behind doors. Things such as seeing to the welfare of widows, orphans and others that might be in distress. They also support the right to protest as shown by the meeting they broke up and passed through the downstairs barroom with the words, "Come on, boys, we are going to Boston Harbor for a Tea Party."

Albert Pike's "Morals and Dogma" is a long read, but it is all there and with lessons for all of us. Masonry was opposed to everything the Nazis stood for, and for that 200,000 of them perished in the Holocaust.

I thank Mr. Kimball for his enlightening letter. I don't get out much anymore, but when I do, I always wear my mask because "your life matters too."

Bully in White House

It's a wonder our POTUS can even find time to play golf these days what with all the time spent bullying, fabricating lies, and generally defaming honest, well-respected folks' character.

Recently he bullied the profoundly ethical Lt. Col. Alexander Vindman to a point where Vindman understandably decided it was time to retire. We salute you, brave sir, for your service to our country. It is a sad day when a person of your character is driven off while a convicted criminal, Roger Stone, is given clemency.

Dr. Anthony Fauci is the latest target of Trump's ire, to the point that our president has mounted a smear campaign to soil the good doctor's name in an effort to make himself look good. Dr. Fauci' s popularity has Trump taking, out of context, things Dr. Fauci may or may not have said, or said months ago when scientists had much to learn of covid-19. Well, Dr. Fauci is the person I would trust with my life as opposed to trusting a pathological liar who openly denies the validity of science. Sorry to say, but wishing the pandemic away isn't really a plan!

On another topic, U.S. Education Secretary DeVos has done as much planning for opening up schools as her boss has for coping with the pandemic. There's nothing like getting help from our leaders.

Follow Golden Rule

I continue to be amazed and saddened at the high level of refusal by some to wear masks in the effort to slow and someday stop the coronavirus. It just seems so sad that there are folks who object to doing something that to them must seem inconvenient and displeasing, especially if someone in authority asks or tells them to.

At the same time, I'm guessing that many of the protesters, if you asked them, would indicate that they were believers in religious matters, and that they endorsed what is known as the Golden Rule, which I believe says something along the lines of, "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you."

In other words, I will do my part to not give you the virus if I have it, and I hope you will do the same for me.

JACK W. HILL

Bismarck

Not just the symptoms

As a young man, I revered the Confederate flag. As a wiser and older man, I better understand the traitorous, destructive idea of preserving white supremacy that that flag represented. It was intended to destroy the United States of America.

Events of recent weeks including protests, riots, and looting are the result of a legacy we have inherited from our forefathers. My friends, relatives, and acquaintances on Facebook, in conversations, and in other forms of media want to talk about these unpleasant events instead of the underlying problems; 400 years of slavery, segregation, Jim Crow laws, job discrimination, and housing discrimination have left us with this problem.

No one is now a slave or slave owner, so many believe there is no problem. Talking about looters and rioting is not a discussion of how we make this country whole and not two societies. Time to discuss the problem and make it better. I have heard harsh words from Black leaders that hit me like a sharp needle. As much as I didn't want to hear those words, I needed a better understanding. Maybe we all need a slap in the face to wake us up.

Mr. Jack Mayberry wrote an opinion printed in Sunday's paper directed at the Black community regarding Black-on-Black crime. It stung a little like a slap in the face, but his words should be heard. Bottom line is we all need to wake up and start a dialogue on how we can make this one nation. Houston, we have a problem, and we should look for ways to solve it. Let's make that effort on how to make it better and not just discuss the symptoms.

Foreign-born genius

An article in the July 8 edition of the Democrat-Gazette talked about Peter Tsai, the scientist who invented the filtration material used in N95 respirators. The article described how this brilliant man has recently come out of retirement to volunteer his time, intelligence, and energy to engineer methods of decontaminating N95 masks so that they can be reused to help reduce shortages of that critical medical equipment. He also has investigated materials for homemade masks, and helped a group of researchers at the Oak Ridge National Lab researching ways to increase production of N95 masks.

Dr. Tsai was born in Taiwan, and he came to the United States in 1981 to obtain his doctoral degree, after which he stayed, enriching our country immeasurably.

A few days before this article appeared, President Trump's administration issued new policies that would have forced international students to leave the U.S. if their schools operate entirely online this fall. I am completely unable to conceive how kicking out foreign-born geniuses like Dr. Tsai could possibly help make America great again.

Girl Scouts and BLM – The Bethel Citizen

To the Editor:

I just resigned from the Girl Scouts after more than 25 years in the program. The organization is not supposed to be political, but I recently got an email with the request to sign their Anti-Racism pledge, a policy I assumed was already covered in the Girl Scout Promise and Laws. I didnt feel it was necessary as the laws state that we should respect myself and others along with being a sister to every other Girl Scout.

So, this seemed redundant. Since this new pledge was accompanied by a letter from Joanne Crepeau CEO of Girl Scouts of Maine, which stated that we would be supporting Black Lives Matter, I wanted clarification: do we support the slogan Black Lives Matter, or the organization? The response specifically states that we are supporting the movement BLM, and that is where my issue with Girl Scouts lies. We are not supposed to be supporting any political entity

I did my research, and when you read the platform of BLM, you can see it is a political movement. At BlackLivesMatter.com (they are not a .org, or a 501-c-3), you can read their latest manifesto about defunding the police. You can watch reports on the nightly news. At the end of June, the BLM President of the Greater New York chapter, Hawk Newsom told a cable news station If the country doesnt give us what we want, the we will burn down this system, and replace it. Does that sound like something Girl Scouts should be supporting? Not for me.

I believe that Girl Scouts should not be involved with any movement or association that has a political agenda, from BLM to The Three Percenters, from Democrat to Republican, from the Tea Party to the Coffee Party. Girl Scouts have plenty of ways to support their sister scouts, the community and our country without delving in to any political philosophy.

I believe we should look to respecting all life, and go back to the Golden rule. Do unto others, as you would have them do unto you. (Matt. 7-12) Yes, black lives do matter, but so does every other human being, and maybe thats where we need to start. Girl Scouts should go back to their roots, and focus on their foundation. When they stop their activism, I might go back, as its all about the children we work with.

Masks work and it only makes sense to wear them – Monroe Evening News

To mask or not to mask? Why is that a question? Just when we were starting to finally shake off some of the restrictions brought on by the COVID virus, we are starting to go back to where we were when it all started.

The number of daily new cases in Michigan are higher now than they were since late May. It does not have to be like this, but too many people are refusing to wear a mask when they are out in public even though mask-wearing and social distancing are effective, as reported in the June 26 edition of Patient Care published by the University of California San Francisco.

Two case studies are particularly informative. One case was in a salon in Springfield, MO. Two hairstylists tested positive for COVID-19 but had met with 140 clients between May 12 and May 20 while wearing masks. The clients had close contact with the stylists for up to 30 minutes. Six other coworkers were also in the salon. Neither the clients nor the coworkers caught the virus.

In another case study, a man flew from China to Toronto. He had a dry cough and subsequently tested positive for COVID-19. He was wearing a mask. The 25 people nearest him on the flight (within 6 feet) all tested negative.

Masks work.

A study from the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation published on June 24, 2020, reported that if 95% of the population wore face masks, it would reduce forecasted deaths from COVID-19 by over 33,000. So, why is there such resistance to wearing a mask?

For some people, the fact that the government, or someone else, is telling them what to do appears to be an irrational application of individual liberty. They abide by other dictates such as stopping at red lights, wearing seatbelts, or lining up to buy a ticket to a sporting event or some other form of entertainment. And I have never seen a person rip off his shirt or argue with a retail owner over a No Shirt, No Shoes, No Service sign. But if a store or restaurant were to enforce No Mask, No Service, the fireworks would start. Irrational. But, how did we get here?

You need to look no further than a comparison between the United States and Canada. On March 1 the United States had 69 confirmed cases of COVID-19. Canada had 20 cases. By July 6 Canada had 105, 524 confirmed cases and the United States had over 2.89 million cases. The difference between the two countries boils down to the difference between the two governments in how they responded to the pandemic. Donald Trump played down the threat if not outright denying it. Justin Trudeau saw it for what it was, a danger to his citizens. He listened to his scientists. Trump did not.

In times of uncertainty, our emotions tend to override our rationality. When that happens, we look to leaders for guidance. Donald Trump refuses to wear a face mask. The head of his COVID task force, Mike Pence, did not wear a face mask until June 28, after the resurgence of the virus. Justin Trudeau began wearing a face mask in mid-May, urging all Canadians to do the same.

Another factor that plays a role is political affiliation. According to a survey reported by Gallup on July 6, 98% of Democrats responded they always wear masks, compared to 66% of Republicans. Why are Republicans less likely to wear a mask? Chris Jackson of Ipsos Public Affairs may have answered that when he stated that, "Once [Trump] very clearly did not wear a mask in public, that transmitted a signal that if youre a good supporter of the president you dont wear a mask." (Market Watch, June 28, 2020)

Remember, wearing a face mask is not so much to protect you as it is to protect others. It helps to prevent a person from passing the virus to others. Remember the Golden Rule, "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you."

Blog: Treat others with dignity in life (7/11/20) – darnews.com

We believe in the dignity of all people. Those are words I heard at the Unitarian Universalist church we attended most of my childhood. While growing up, I thought those words were almost universally shared. I always knew there were people taking actions that didnt align with showing others dignity, but I believed they were outliers.Im not sure I believe that anymore.Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines dignity as the quality or state of being worthy, honored or esteemed.Ill admit, I had to look that up. I always just used it as a synonym for respect.Im not perfect at showing everybody dignity and nobody is all the time, but the point is to try.Karen Armstrong, a British author who focuses on religion and a former Roman Catholic sister, discusses the golden rule as something apparent in every major faith around the world.Every single one of them has evolved their own version of whats been called the golden rule, she said in a 2009 TEDtalk. Sometimes it comes in a positive version always treat all others as you would like to be treated yourself and equally important the negative version dont do to others as you what you would not like them to do to you.Armstrong said that by living by this rule all day and every day people become less focused on themselves and more compassionate.Despite it being so present in religions, people often dont want to be compassionate and instead argue, she said.People often want to be right instead and that defeats the purpose of the exercise, she said. If we dont manage to implement the golden rule globally I doubt that well have a viable world to hand on to the next generation. Now I thew out a religion that I recognize many people dont know about, so let me explain it since thats the background Im coming from.Unitarian Universalism is a non-denominational faith based on principles rather than a specific text. The core of the faith leans on seven principles:The inherent worth and dignity of every person;Justice, equity and compassion in human relations;Acceptance of one another and encouragement of spiritual growth;A free and responsible search for truth and meaning; The right of conscience and the use of the democratic process; The goal of a world community with peace, liberty, and justice for all;Respect for the interdependent web of all existence of which we are a part. While, again, nobody will be perfect at following any faith 100% of the time, I wish something like these were more universally taught or that the golden rule would guide more actions than it does. These principals are the idea that we should have civil conversations about issues and conversations that go both ways; that we listen with our ears and not our mouths; that we strive to not cause harm.Things are divisive, right now, more than they have been in a while, and thats not going to change anytime soon. But, maybe, if we learn to treat people with more dignity and that did become the norm, the divides can still be mended.
