Spiritual hunger persists even in the face of physical hunger – Forward

Amos dedicated the bulk of his prophecy to railing against the well-heeled, calling them cows of Bashan: They drink [straight] from the wine bowls, And anoint themselves with the choicest oils But they are not concerned about the food/ruin (shever) of Joseph (Amos 6:6).

And yet, in Amoss climactic prophecy, he shifts his focus to from starving poor to the desire for spiritual nourishment: A time is comingdeclares my Lord GODwhen I will send a famine upon the land: not a hunger for bread or a thirst for water, but for hearing the words of the LORD (8:11).

Amos shift is shocking. Maslows famous pyramid of needs suggests that it is impossible to tend to psychological and emotional wellbeing, when more basic physiological and personal safety needs have not been secured. How can Amos worry about the spirit when the poor are being crushed by debt and worry for their daily bread?

Maslows hierarchy of needs.

This dilemma is especially resonant these days. Alongside the tragic loss of more than a million lives worldwide and millions more sickened, COVID-19 has blazed a trail of economic destruction. People have lost jobs and homes, children are going without education or food.

And yet despite these pressing concerns of health and money, this pandemic has also unleashed a storm of intellectual content. My inbox has swelled with invitations to Zoom conferences, new podcast series and more. And its not falling on deaf ears or inboxes; there is plenty of evidence that the wave of content is coming to meet a groundswell of demand.

As just one example, we at the Pardes Institute of Jewish Studies have found that hundreds are eager to join our weekly virtual classes. Despite the wealth of attractive offerings from other institutions, our summer program has seen unprecedented registration. We see similar indications in our full-time programs as well. Even before knowing what the US would face, most of last years students felt that continuing to study Torah was well worth the risk, and chose to shelter-in-place here in Jerusalem. We are clearly thirsty for Torah.I am sympathetic to Rabbi Yisrael Salanters critique that we spend too much time worrying about our own stomachs and other peoples souls rather than worrying about other peoples stomachs and our own souls. People are going hungry right now.

In addition to demanding that our governments provide relief, this is surely a time to be especially punctilious about Jewish laws demand that the average person gives 10% of their income to the poor, 20% if possible, as instructed by the Shulchan Aruch (YD 249:1). The authoritative Ashkenazi commentator, Rabbi Moses Isserles, adds explicitly that One may not use their tithes for anything else like candles for the synagogue, etc. They should be given to the poor. We should be giving as much as we can, perhaps drawing from our sadly unused entertainment or vacation budgets.

And yet, the Jewish community is also stepping up to relieve the spiritual thirst of which Amos speaks. Pardes has decided to take the unprecedented step of offering major scholarships, including living stipends, to eligible students to spend the coming year studying Torah in Jerusalem. We are just one of a number of institutions that are making special offers to laid-off Jewish educators and professionals as well as aspiring Jewish leaders, innovators and creators whose plans and dreams have been disrupted by the pandemic.

The Jewish community needs to show this group of people that the Jewish world not only wants to keep them safe, but it wants to invest in them and their Jewish futures. After studying at Pardes, these professionals, graduates and future leaders will return to the workforce with increased Jewish confidence, skills and ideas. They will be energized and ready to rebuild the Jewish community and the world-at-large.

The great German scholar Rabbi Meir of Rothenberg created a stir when he permitted using a portion of ones tzedakah funds for the purchasing of books for learning as long as you lend them to others. More than half a millennium later, Rabbi Eliezer Waldenburg justified this shocking practice on the basis of the requirement that we provide whatever is lacking to the poor person (Deut. 15:8). Spiritual nourishment is no less important than physical nourishment, argues Rabbi Waldenburg, evoking Amos.

Given the crisis of meaning created by this terrible plague in our midst, it is not surprising that the Jewish world is crying out for spiritual nourishment. That doesnt release us from the obligation to provide physical nourishment. But, by making it possible for a cadre of future Jewish leaders to quench their thirst for the word of God, especially in this time of economic insecurity, it will help us get through this crisis with both body and soul intact. This is the call of the prophet Amos.

How To Recognize Signs Of Spiritual Awakening In Your Life & What To Do About It – YourTango

How to know if you are going through a spiritual awakening and what to do about it.

How do you know if you are experiencing a spiritual awakening? The signs of a spiritual awakenings can actually be pretty messy, so a lot of people don't actually know what is going on.

Here are some clues to help you see if you are going through one, and what to do about it.

RELATED: What Are The Seven Spiritual Laws Of Success?

You feel "stuck."

Usually, the first sign of a spiritual awakening is a "stuck" feeling. You may not know exactly what's going on, but you just feel like something is off.

Unfortunately, most people just stay in that feeling and don't change anything in their life. This is a big mistake.

When something feels "off," it's importantyou to listen to and trust yourselfandmake any necessary changes as soon as possible.

You outgrow people, places, jobs, and other elements of your life.

Maybe you felt content in your situation before. But as yougrowspiritually, you will outgrow lots of things. Let that be OK! Keep growing and moving forward.

Manytimes, this will show up first as your job not feeling right for you anymore. Whatever it is you feel stuck with, look into that deeply and think of changes you can make to adjust to your new spiritual growth.

So many tend to stay at this spot forever and never take that as a sign to continue growing. They just complain about hating their circumstances, but never make the changes to accommodate their soul's growth.

That is the worst thing you can do for your soul!

You start to gravitatetowards new people.

Another sign of spiritual growth is when you outgrow your friends. You may all of a sudden decide you can't stand a friend you've had for years. Or, youcan no longer put up with their behavior and habits.

As you grow and raise up in consciousness, you usually have to change out some of the people in your life. Let this be OK, as well!

Don't torture yourself by surrounding yourself with people that don't feel right to you anymore. Start finding new people that resonate with where you are now.

Always take action on your intution.

Listening to and trusting your intuition is vital in this process. As you become conscious of something, the worst thing you can do is ignore it. Listen to what you're feeling and always take action on that feeling.

Forward movement is the only way to secure spiritual growth. "Just knowing" doesn't change the circumstances you must actually live through your actions, especially in the midst of a spiritual awakening.

Spiritual growth can be hard.

We often need to make difficult choices along the way, but it's always worth it.

Outgrowing circumstances and people can be painful, but staying where you no longer fit causeeven worse emotional issues.

You may start to justify your bad circumstances, place blame, or numb yourself in order to feel OK with a situation you shouldn't be OK with.

Don't justify or muddle your way through these painful feelings.Change your circumstancesto fit your growth!

Accept that you're leveling up.

Look at your spiritual awakening asa graduation of sorts. You have to outgrow things in order to grow. This is actually exciting! So, focus on the growth not what or who you have to leave behind.

Spiritual growth is different for everyone;there's no "one size fits all" option. We are all at different points on our personal journey.

Most importantly, you must listen to your soul and recognize when something feels wrong. Look at any areas of your life that you have outgrown, and work on changes so you can move on.

Spiritual growth often comes with a big life change or challenge.

Sometimes, it may feel like your world is falling apart. In reality, your life is just being restructured for your new level of awareness.

Always look deeper into all situations. The worst things that happen to us very often end up being the best thing that could have happenedbecause theycause the most growth.

So, look at every challenge as an opportunity for growth! Don't fight change, it only holds back your growth.

Make those hard choices, so you can cement your growth and not stay stuck in limbo forever!

How B-Boy Neguin uses the immense power of breaking – Red Bull

Known and renowned in the world of breaking simply as Neguin, the Brazilian dancer born Fabiano Carvalho Lopes has proven a formidable force in the competitive arena. The Paran native brought immense talent, a broad skill set, and jaw-dropping moves to both RedBull BC One and RedBull Dance Your Style, winning the USA honour in 2019.

Though he grew up immersed in capoeira, discovering hip-hop culture in his teens introduced him to the style he would become known for. Breaking is the most complete art form, dancing-wise, Neguin says, embracing the technical and cultural aspects of the streetwise style.

Today, the world-traveled pro synthesizes his myriad of influences, the physical and the spiritual, with a new video clip. In it, Neguin expresses himself, his Blackness, and his devotion to nature in time with a poem that speaks to our current cultural moment amid global protests against racial bias and inequity. The reflective selection allows him to showcase what hes known for with grace, power and profound beauty.

People need to feel and understand what I go through, he says, so they can relate to the message that I'm passing along and also understand how to take responsibility to make sure we make the world a better place. We got the chance to speak with Neguin about his life, career and this point in his journey.

How was dance introduced to you in your youth?

I was lucky enough to start with my Brazilian culture. Capoeira, which is a Brazilian martial art, is a holistic approach it's dance, it's music, it's self-defense. There's so many elements together. I started at three years old. 10 years later, I wanted to know what other cultures had the same powerful meaning. So, I got into hip-hop culture. Of course there was nobody at the time in my hometown that they could dance hip-hop or anything, so I kind of mixed it up with the knowledge that I was getting from capoeira. That actually became my signature. I was learning about hip-hop culture, specifically breaking. I wanted to bring something new to the table when it comes to the dance. Other than that, Brazil has a variety of these elements, samba, frevo, even like the rave scene.

Was it difficult to learn breaking given that you didn't have a community of breakers around you in the beginning?

The similarities to capoeira in breaking are amazing. Theyre so complete in every way you look at it, moving wise, for example. If a person is spinning on their head for 25 to 50 rounds, it's like the same gravitational force as a hurricane or a tornado. Science cannot really explain it, but for us breakers, we're deciphering how complex we are with it and how we feel. Your brain senses that you respect everything that you are doing. It's healing, in a way. So, to talk about breaking, you dance so many different ways upside down, back on the ground. You can dance anywhere, anytime. It's really the freedom that this art form has.

This video of you dancing contains a really beautiful poem. What does it mean to you and how does this speak for you?

This, for me, was about the experience that I have dealing with so much racism and prejudice throughout my whole life. Here in Brazil, where I come from, it's predominantly white. I was probably the only black kid in school. I felt racism from an early age and I knew how to deal with that. Putting that in a film in this particular moment, it was necessary. We know there's a problem over there that's bigger than us and we all have to be accountable for it. But we have to be together in this. The poem, it was about delivering a little bit of the message, expressing who am I, what is to be Neguin, what is to be someone like me. I put together the text and I spoke to a friend of mine. We put the words together in the poem and decided that it was OK for him to actually have his voice on it. Because I can express myself through the dance, with my friend Juliana. It was a collective idea.

How did it feel for you to match the ideas and sentiments of this poem with dance?

Lets say I'm angry about something. So I might just flip, and that flip represents a lot of energy that Im holding. I kind of explode and release it at the same time. When you see me running, it's the freedom of running in nature and being able to chase after something joyful in your life. So I took every piece that was like, OK, this is how I would express that. And we're together in this, myself as a black person, Juliana as a white female, a person that's in front of me. How can we connect? I grabbed her hand with my hand and were together, holding each other.

Over the years, have other cultures influenced your dance style?

Absolutely. For the past 15 years, I've been traveling the world, over a hundred countries by now. Everywhere I go has different dance styles. I'm so fascinated about getting to learn different cultures and translate to today's. I went to Turkey and found traditional zeybek dancers. I learned and absorbed that into my style. Ive gone to Bali and seen the Balinese dancers there, the ladies. I learned something from their culture. Everywhere I go, I get a lot of influence from this collective global culture that I blend into my style.

Neguin conducts a workshop at the RedBull BC One Camp in Mumbai, India

Ali Bharmal/RedBull Content Pool

Given that global influence, how do you maintain sort of your own cultural identity and connection to Brazil in your approach to dance?

Actually, that's what you call ginga [the fundamentals of capoeira]. Once you experience Brazilian culture, you see that as like it's a very holistic way. Everything is connected to the lifestyle of Brazil. For instance, if you go into nature, youre going to be flipping on the grass. But it's not just flipping for us. We're going to the grass to celebrate life and enjoy the weather. Your body receives the energy from the ground by you flipping the grass.

In what ways has your personal spiritual journey grown with you in your career in dance?

When I was a kid, I used to go a lot to the Amazon. I was always fascinated by the native Brazilians. I wanted to understand their culture and their spirituality. What I learned throughout the years is that everything is nature. So, if you get sick, you have medicine in nature, passed down as tradition for so many years. In a sense, it's bigger than religion in a way. As long as you connect with and respect nature, youre aligned with the universe.

How do you manage when a piece of choreography challenges you or takes you outside of your comfort zone?

As a breaker, as a B-boy, you have to be creative. That's the inner creation. Somebody can help you, somebody can direct you, but the free form of expression is something so powerful. Ive never found this hard, as a choreography to learn, because I understood how to take time and appreciate it. Airflare is very difficult to learn. So many amazing B-boys still cannot do airflare. So that can translate into a frustration. At the same time, Im like, You know what? The time is going to come. You have to have the discipline, to understand how your body is going to work, but you have to enjoy everything. At the end of the day, everything's about having a good time and experience.

What sort of mindset do you bring to breakdancing competitively?

First of all, while I might be competing with somebody against me, truly I'm competing with myself. You can be a winner, you can be a loser. You can win a competition, or you can lose in the first round. Things can go wrong, but at the end of the day, it self-reflects on who you are. Then you might face yourself. Am I truly a champion? Am I a loser, somebody that trains hard a lot but when it comes to the moment, I get scared? Its knowledge of self. So when I go to a competition, I go with the mindset that I know myself. I know what I'm going to do and how am I going to do it regardless how people think or how they're going to feel. I'm going to do me and with the positive energy that I have, it's going to bring something to something to the experience.

Neguin makes a stop in Chicago for the RedBull BC One All Star Tour

Kien Quan / RedBull Content Pool

Are there things that people might be surprised to learn about you unrelated to your dancing?

When people look at me competing, it's like Im a scary guy. They see powerful energy, so much you must be an angry person during the day. I'm actually the opposite. I'm super happy, very friendly. I'm down to earth basically. How I am in my everyday life, on a regular daily basis, Im just a very simple person. I talk to the homeless, I talk to fans, I respond to everybody on social media. I like to connect with people.

You toured with Madonna during her MDNA tour, which is different from a lot of your other experiences. What was it like dancing in front of those large concert audiences?

I love to show off, but in a very positive sense. I have to show the world the light that I have. Some people are shy to express themselves, like it's not a comfortable thing for them. If I'm the so-called dancer/artist and I have the opportunity to highlight my talents, my gifts with thousands of people, I'm going to see that with so much joy. A lot of people say, I'm going to go on stage, there's so many people watching me, I'm going to get nervous. For myself it was the opposite. I want to reach as many people as I can with my art, because what I represent is very powerful. It's civilization. I enjoyed touring with her because it was, she was cool with this type of format. Because I'm not competing, but I'm simply performing shows.

What is it that continues to drive you as a dancer? What gives you that rush and keeps you so satisfied doing what you're doing?

I'm so grateful to be able. I'm healthy and, let's say, God gave me this gift, this opportunity to do what I do and inspire people. So for me, it's to be able to inspire as many people as I can. It is the most amazing thing when you bring something that can have an impact on somebody else's life in a positive way. Sometimes its not about just the dance, but as a voice, as a peer or leader. I might teach a workshop somewhere in Russia, where teenagers are smoking or drinking, a poison in their body. So I tell them like, if you want to be a champion, you have to have a healthy lifestyle. So I think that's what keeps me going, just as a messenger to bring something more positive to this world.

Breathing rituals kind of spiritual oxygen – Otago Daily Times

It is time to stop and take a deep breath, writes Lynne Taylor.

The diaphragm is a dome-shaped muscle at the bottom of your lungs. As you inhale, your diaphragm tightens and moves downwards, meaning that there is more space in your chest cavity for more air.

When you exhale, your diaphragm relaxes and returns upwards, into the chest cavity.

Breathing deeply, engaging the diaphragm, is a life-skill that many of us lose. We get into the habit of short, shallow, chest-breathing and lose the ability to take deep belly breaths. This is unfortunate, when deep breaths have been demonstrated to have many benefits, including reducing stress. And it is ironic that it is during times of distress that we are most likely revert to shallow breathing.

Im usually pretty good at breathing.

However, over the past few months I have frequently needed to remind myself to breathe. As I scroll through the news: breathe. As I find myself worrying about things I cannot control: breathe. I try to remember to take a deliberate moment and pause. As I breathe in, I note the point when I move from chest to belly breathing. Then I exhale slowly. It helps.

Deep breaths are a core part of many meditation practices. For Christians, one such practice, known as Breath Prayer, dates back at least as far as the sixth century. Breath Prayer involves a repeated phrase that follows the rhythm of your breathing. The first part of the phrase is recalled as you breathe in, the second part as you exhale. Traditionally, Breath Prayer is linked with the Jesus prayer ("Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy"). However, it can be used with many words and phrases.

Such an exercise can help us acknowledge the stress and sorrow of everyday life, while also reorienting us towards goodness and hope. "Breathing in peace, breathing out fear," for example. Or "Inhale hope and courage, exhale worry and fear."

While some who adopt this practice use the same phrase repeatedly, others choose from among many phrases, depending on the circumstances. Either way, it can be helpful to have a default phrase that you can draw on in a moment of particular stress.

For Christians, Breath Prayers help remind us of our dependence upon God, who gives us the gift of life, and continues to sustain our lives, day by day. It has been this way from the beginning of human history.

The story of Adams creation (Genesis 2) includes God breathing "into his nostrils the breath of life." It was this breath, the breath of God, which caused Adam to become "a living being".

When Jesus appeared to the disciples after his resurrection, "he breathed on them and said to them, Receive the Holy Spirit." (John 20:22).

As we breathe deeply, therefore, we are invited to remember Gods creation, redemption and sustaining in our lives. We are invited to recognise that each breath we draw is a gift from God, and that Gods Spirit is near to us. Nearer even, than our own breath.

If you havent already done so, begin to pay attention to your breathing.

The simple act of mindfully breathing in and out can help us to navigate challenging times. You might like to take it a step further and add words, perhaps a prayer, to your breathing. Doing so can help us to place our own existence in the context of a bigger picture, and in the care of a loving God.

- Lynne Taylor is Jack Somerville Lecturer in Pastoral Theology at the University of Otago. She teaches in the areas of pastoral care and chaplaincy.

Yuno Baswir's paintings teeter compellingly between order and chaos. Baswir, who has a new online and in-person exhibit at Studio Gallery DC, creates his new series of 24 inch by 36 or 48 inch acrylics by painting his canvases flat on a table. Each starts with a steady background color, ranging from royal blue to lavender to lime; Baswir then superimposes that layer with a broad cluster of small, white, circular shapes made by hand using a special tool. The circular shapes are organized in irregular but pleasing patterns that suggest vibrating atoms or television static. Baswir imbues his paintings with spirituality. I intentionally and consciously use the act of painting to remember and praise The Most High, he says. The round shapes were inspired by prayer beads, and by the look of the gathering of hundreds of thousands of human beings in one place for the one purpose of worshiping and praising their Creator. The paintings can be seen online at Studio Gallerys website and the artists website, and also in person at the gallery by appointment on Wednesdays and Thursdays, and without appointment on Fridays and Saturdays from 1 to 6 p.m. The exhibition is available at studiogallerydc.com and yunodelwizarbaswir.com. Breaking down the Tesla obsession – Axios

Tesla is the company of the moment the prime exemplar of just about any big and important trend that you might care about.

Why it matters: Almost every reader of finance and business news will have at least one strongly-held opinion about Tesla. What you might not realize is just how widely those opinions range, and the degree to which they map onto much broader views of the world.

Tesla, especially after its merger with Solar City, sometimes feels like a Utopian project an attempt to populate a carbon-neutral future with fast, efficient vehicles that don't contribute to global warming.

Tesla has already benefited from the Fed's zero-interest rate policy following the global financial crisis a policy designed to incentivize capital-intensive investment.

Capitalists love and fear natural monopolies. Tesla's flagship product its cars, powered by its batteries, its home-built software, and its network of charging stations is years ahead of the competition, and is synonymous with "electric vehicle" for many.

The one thing Tesla hasn't made, despite many years' worth of promises that it was just around the corner, is a self-driving car. That hasn't stopped the company from advertising a feature called "autopilot."

Depending on whom you talk to, Tesla CEO Elon Musk is the archetypal cartoon-villain billionaire or else he's the archetypal planet-saving billionaire.

Tesla is like a SpaceX rocket to stock investors, but the car makers bond holders are more down to earth – MarketWatch

Tesla's TSLA, -2.93% market capitalization is nearing $300 billion. Its now the largest car maker in the world, even larger than Toyota Motor Corp. TM, -0.66%, which produced almost 9 million cars in 2019 and has a market capitalization of around $175 billion.

Tesla stock is trading at 45 times very rosy and improbable 2024 earnings. Teslas market cap implies that investors believe that production will go up more than 20-fold from the 400,000 cars a year it currently produces to 10 million cars.

Bondholders take a decidedly different view of Tesla. As the stock-market valuation of Tesla races to the moon, its debt rating is earthbound. Tesla, the worlds largest automaker, gets a Caa1 rating from Moodys Investors Service for its senior unsecured debt, while S&P Global gives Tesla a B- credit rating. Put simply, Teslas bonds are considered junk. (By comparison, Toyota is rated A+, GM GM, -0.11% is rated BBB).

Read: Teslas stock is forming a bubble and new buyers should buckle up for a crash

Plus: 7 risks for Teslas stock that Robinhood traders would be wise to heed

When I wrote a 37-page serieson Tesla I opened it with this quote from F. Scott Fitzgerald: The test of a first-rate intelligence is the ability to hold two opposed ideas in mind at the same time and still retain the ability to function. An analysis of Tesla and the automotive industry today requires holding a lot of opposing ideas.

I have made the analogy that the transition from internal combustion engine (ICE) cars to electric motors is akin to the transition from dumbphones to smartphones. Its a domain shift. So maybe this will bring higher margins for Tesla, as happened for Apple AAPL, -1.23% with the iPhone. Unlike other car makers, Tesla is vertically integrated: It manufactures most of the components that go into its cars (including seats); thus it gains from the economies of scale.

Also, software plays a bigger role in a Tesla than in a traditional car. There is self-driving, over-the-air updates, and an iPad-like interface that powers all the controls, for starters. So if advanced software helps Tesla get higher margins than traditional car companies, it in fact may not have to make as many cars to get to Toyotas profitability. Bulls would even argue that self-driving alone may send Teslas margins soaring. Ill pour cold water on that argument: Full autonomous driving is a good decade away.

It will take years, maybe even a decade, for Tesla to produce enough cars to justify its valuation.

Most importantly, going from 400,000 cars to many millions a year is neither easy nor cheap. The market confuses Tesla with Silicon Valley tech companies. Yes, Tesla is much more a technology company than your typical ICE car company is. It creates its own software and even the microprocessor that powers self-driving, but it still cannot escape the reality that it has to bend a lot of metal to produce its electric cars.

Unlike Facebook FB, +0.27% , which a decade ago could increase its user base 10- or- 20-fold by spending a few hundred million dollars on data centers, Tesla will require an incredible amount of capital to increase production many-fold. To produce fewer than half a million cars, as it does today, Tesla needed a $25 billion investment in property, plants, and equipment. This is where bits meet atoms and face financial gravity. Tesla is barely breaking even today and will need to raise and invest hundreds of billions of dollars to increase production enough to grow into its current valuation.

Then there is an element of time. Tesla has been stuck at producing 90,000 cars for the last eight quarters. It can only blame the coronavirus for a quarter or two. Getting to an annual production of even a few million cars will require time a lot of time. A lot of dirt has to be moved, permits issued, equipment installed, people hired. It will take years, maybe even a decade, for Tesla to produce enough cars to justify its valuation. Todays market valuation assumes Tesla is already there that the capital has been raised and spent and that it cost nothing.

So, how does one invest in this overvalued market? Our strategy is spelled outin this fairly lengthyarticle.

As a leader in autonomous driving, we estimate that Tesla(NASDAQ:TSLA) recorded $1.4 billion in Software Revenue in 2019 via sales of its Full Self Driving software upgrades. These upgrades, which cost about $8,000 per vehicle currently, are also highly lucrative. So How Do Teslas Software Upgrades Impact Its Margins? We estimate that they contributed about 400 basis points (4%) to Teslas Automotive Gross Margins (revenues less direct costs, divided by revenues) of 21% in 2019. Excluding software sales, Tesla is unlikely to have been profitable over the last few quarters. No discussion about S&P inclusion.

How Do Software Sales Impact Teslas Margins?

Why Software Could Account For A Higher Mix of Margins Going Forward

Will Tesla Be On S&P 500? Teslas Software Has One Clue - Forbes

Korea’s Trendy ‘Tesla’ Cocktail is Just as Risky as Autopilot – The Drive

Let's be clear about one thing: there is no such thing as a self-driving car, let alone a self-driving Tesla. No matter what its CEO Elon Musk may say, Tesla lags behind rivals like General Motors (and soon Ford) in making a hands-free highway driving system that uses cameras to make sure the driver is really paying attention. But it's backed by a hype machine that has no equal, which is why Tesla is, at last, making a splash in South Korea, where liver-strong techies have reportedly rechristened one of the country's signature cocktails in Tesla's name.

According to a Reuters story on the company's inroads on Korea, a cocktail's new "Tesla" name is a portmanteau of Terraa light lagerand soju; a smooth, often sweet rice spirit. How those two come together to form the name of a certain California-based automaker isn't quite clear, though having personally consumed several Kopstootje (the Dutch equivalent made with jenever) in a hostel basement bar while working up the courage to sing karaoke, I can see why Koreans would find such a drink appealing.

Known to Americans as the Boilermaker, the Germans as the U-Boot, and Russians, the Yorsh, the pairing (or dunking in) of a shot of grain-distilled liquor and a pint of beer is one of the world's simplest cocktails. It tastes good, goes down easy, and depending on the strength of the ingredients, can get you absolutely shelled in no time. Koreans have long enjoyed this concoction as a drink called the Somaek, though now that orders for the Model X are piling up in Korea, Musk stans have reportedly helped get the drink rebranded in honor of their favorite car company.

So, I decided to try out Korea's Tesla cocktail for myself, though sourcing the ingredients proved trickier than you might imagine.

The soju itself was easy; a bottle of unflavored Jinro was easily found on the shelves of a local liquor store. Terra, on the other hand, turned out to be next to impossible.

As of spring 2019, demand for the new, Millennial-aimed "clean" lager outstripped demand according to Korea JoongAng Daily, and it would appear its producer HiteJinro hasn't found the chance to distribute it stateside, as no retailer I spoke to could source the stuff. Therefore, I reasoned the staple product from its manufacturer, the eponymous Hite beer itself, would make an adequate substitute. It too is a lager, one with a Budweiser- and Coors-like rice-based mash, with a light taste and an ABV of 4.5 percent, just marginally higher than the Terra it is to stand in for. And, following a Somaek recipe published by Supercall, I took the plunge.

How is it? At the recommended 7:3 beer to soju ratio, it came out a tad sweet, subtly malty, and hazardously light for a beverage that drinks like a light beer, but hits like a normal brew. Otherwise, it's a solid stand-in for a beer, and as such isn't especially interesting for a cocktail.

At only five ounces, it disappears quickly, though it'd still be no kick to the liver if prepared as a double. If extra complexity is desired, substituting one of the many fruit-flavored varieties of soju for the plain stuff could be a fun twist, as could a few drops of orange bitters.

But if getting sauced is the goal, using something stronger than Jinro at its paltry 20 percent ABV would be the ticket. Even so, it'd remain the kind of beverage that'd be easy to drink nightly, or down eight of in succession, only to find yourself worshipping the porcelain god or posting things to Twitter that you later regret.

As tributes to Tesla go, it's a fitting one.

Nasdaq stocks led by Tesla continue their blistering run while chill envelops rest of the market – CNBC

This stock market is like the old line about having one foot in a bucket of scalding water and the other in a bucket of ice, netting out to a neutral, if not comfortable, temperature.

There's the blistering Nasdaq, with its unassailable technology gatekeepers and a combustible frenzy in Tesla stealing much of the market's oxygen. Then there's the chill enveloping smaller stocks, vestiges of the physical consumer economy and legacy financial institutions.

Together they have the inclusive S&P 500 in a tight and tidy trading range, last week refusing plenty of excuses to break down, finishing at a one-month high and even showing signs of giving the benchwarmer value stocks a chance to play with Friday's broader rally.

The crucial question swirling around the Nasdaq's ascent and refusal of the Big Six stocks to take anything but a quick rest for months is whether investors are in danger of overpaying for the perceived certainty of secure cash flows, durable growth and entrenched franchises in the digital economy.

There is no denying both that the Nasdaq complex in the short-term appears technically stretched and over-loved, while large-cap tech is getting richly valued.

SentimenTrader.com notes that about three-quarters of Nasdaq stocks are above their 200-day moving average, the shorthand definition of a longer-term uptrend, while only about 40% of S&P 500 names are in that position. This gap in breadth is either rare or unprecedented:

The Nasdaq 100 has pushed more than 22% above its 200-day average, according to Baycrest Partners' Jonathan Krinsky, the most extreme spread with the index at a high since 2000.

And the S&P tech sector has returned to its peak price-to-sales ratio from the March 2000 tech-bubble market top.

Source: FactSet

For sure, today's tech companies are more profitable than those of two decades ago. And while the five largest S&P 500 stocks are all from the Nasdaq and in the tech or Internet realms (Apple, Microsoft, Amazon, Alphabet and Facebook) now make up a 20-year high 21% of the S&P 500, they also kick in a commensurate portion of the index's free cash flow, as this breakdown from Fred Alger Management shows.

And as wild as the Nasdaq's surge and outperformance have been, it simply hasn't piled up the amount of easy riches that it had in the late-'90s run. In the five and ten years through the end of 1999, the Nasdaq Composite had gained 440% and 800%, respectively. The comparable gains over the past five and ten years: up 111% and 380%.

Admittedly, arguing that the current market is not as expensive, frothy or beloved as the most overvalued, overextended and overestimated market in many decades is not exactly a ringing endorsement. And indeed we may never see a close rerun of that period. But, as argued here a few weeks ago, stocks can be stoutly valued and priced for subpar future returns without representing an unstable bubble or dangerous misallocation of capital.

Another qualitative distinction between today's outsized Nasdaq contribution to the market's climb and the one that culminated 20 years and four months ago: The crowding into the mega-cap elite names today is a defensive instinct, investors gravitating toward steadiness and predictability rather than blue-sky hopes of galloping growth rates and innovative disruption to come. As long as corporate-debt yields remain so low and cash-flow streams are seen as very scarce, what might upend this part of the market beyond nasty short-term corrections and shakeouts.

Back in the late '90s, the market was implicitly over-extrapolating massive growth rates for many years in companies more cyclical than appreciated, such as Cisco Systems and Intel (along with Microsoft, Oracle, Yahoo and other graybeards of Silicon Valley).

There is an unusual situation now in which the tech darlings have been barreling higher largely on macro fears and heavy liquidity flows rather than product hype or Wall Street salesmanship. In fact, the consensus analyst price targets for Apple, Microsoft and Amazon are all below the stocks' current quote, according to FactSet.

Does this show a helpfully cautious analytical corps serially underestimating today's best companies a sturdy wall of worry built by Wall Street itself? Or is it a sign the market has carried them beyond even the sell side's typically rosy calculus of fundamental value?

Who knows, Friday's mean-reversion action, with banks, energy and small caps retaking a sliver of the territory dominated by tech, is the start of a rebalancing of the market. The levitation in secular-growth sectors has arguably been the market's way of deploying ample liquidity to stay supported as the country backslides on Covid containment and the economy fitfully tries to recover.

It's tough to deny that big chunks of the Nasdaq are in the sway of overheated speculation. Tesla, to take the obvious example, has gained $108 billion in market value in two weeks. More than $34 billion worth of the stock traded on Friday alone, twice the turnover that day in Amazon a company whose market cap is more than five times as large.

This is fevered, heedless action, feeding on itself and punishing the disciplined. And the more it goes on or spreads to other stocks, the harder it will become to make the case that this is a market unappreciated by a skeptical investing public.

Bitcoin Investors Unfazed By Great Twitter Hack, as Volatility Remains Stable | Markets and Prices – Bitcoin News

Bitcoin traders seem unfazed by the massive Twitter hack on Wednesday, as the price of the top cryptocurrency has largely remained steady.

Prominent U.S. figures including billionaires Bill Gates, Elon Musk, and Jeff Bezos were targeted by hackers in an apparent Twitter bitcoin (BTC) scam. The official accounts of former president Barack Obama as well as aspiring presidents Joe Biden and Kanye West were also hacked.

According to data from crypto analytics firm Skew, bitcoins implied volatility is having a muted reaction to the Twitter hack.

Over the past one month, bitcoins implied volatility has averaged 55%, said Skew. The figures suggest that the BTC price may remain subdued for a time, perhaps until around September or October, say analysts.

There doesnt seem to be a major concern about this unexpected event triggering a move in the bitcoin price, Skew observed.

Implied volatility measures the markets expectations of the bitcoin price over specific periods. It is usually used to price options contracts, and the fact that the price didnt move the earth in the wake of the Twitter breach means traders might not be concerned about the event.

It is likely that investors are clear that the hack is not an attack on bitcoin well, because Bitcoin cannot be hacked but a breach on the social media platform Twitter is possible.

Now, amidst the potentionally reputation-damaging widespread media coverage, there was some expectation that the hack would lead to panic selling and a crash in the bitcoin price.

But BTC held steady, sliding a marginal 0.72% over the past 24 hours to $9,127, according to figures from markets.Bitcoin.com. The benchmark cryptocurrency has largely traded in the lower $9,000 range in the last few days, as investors exercise caution.

Bitcoins implied volatility hit 200% in March, when the BTC price lost half its value in a matter of minutes the great crash that has become to be known as the Black Thursday. However, the metric has been in decline ever since, at one point averaging around 45% early this month.

The Twitter Hack Fiasco: Compromised Internal Tool, Paid Insiders, Direct Message Fears – Bitcoin News

On Wednesday, a large number of Twitter accounts were compromised and the hackers used the accounts to tweet about a bitcoin doubling scam. According to multiple reports, a Twitter employee was paid to give the hackers an internal tool that let them leverage high-profile social media accounts.

It was a crazy day in the world of cryptocurrencies, as a massive number of high-profile people and organizations like Bill Gates, Apple, Uber, Barack Obama, Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos, Joe Biden, and many others had their Twitter accounts hijacked. After the incident, a number of armchair sleuths and investigative journalists uncovered a wealth of information about the Twitter issue.

The popular columnist Joseph Cox detailed that he obtained leaked screenshots of an internal tool that was used by the hackers. According to the report, Cox says that one of his anonymous sources revealed that the culprits paid [a] Twitter insider. He also mentioned that Twitter was still investigating whether or not the employee leveraged the tool or merely allowed others to use it.

On Twitter, the Block Crypto analyst Larry Cermaks recent Twitter thread gives a comprehensive look at the incident as well. Cermak says that it all started at 2:16 PM ET with a known crypto account @Angelobtc asking for payment to join a fake telegram paid group.

The takeaway is that the hacker started with large crypto accounts and stuck to only a few formats and addresses, Cermak continued. The hacker then moved to non-crypto celebrities two hours after the first hack. They only used three BTC addresses. What I will say is that its totally unacceptable that it took Twitter to act as long as it did. At 4:17 PM ET it was absolutely clear to anyone that was paying attention that Twitter is compromised. It took Twitter 2 hours (at 6:05 PM ET) to start acting.

Another finding stemming from Joseph Cox explains that U.S. Senator Ron Wyden complained to Twitter about using end-to-encryption (e2e) for direct messages two years ago, and the firm never acted upon the idea.

In September of 2018, shortly before he testified before the Senate Intelligence Committee, I met privately with Twitters CEO Jack Dorsey, Wyden tweeted. During that conversation, Mr. Dorsey told me the company was working on end-to-end encrypted direct messages. The Senator continued:

Its been nearly two years since our meeting, and Twitter DMs are still not encrypted, leaving them vulnerable to employees who abuse their internal access to the companys systems, and hackers who gain unauthorized access.

Many people are concerned about the direct message access, as any person who was hacked in the incident may have had their chat logs scraped. The organization Fight for the Future tweeted a petition to the masses in order to convince Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey to protect an accounts direct messages. Its long past time for Twitter to implement default end-to-end encryption on direct messages, the group said. The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) director of cybersecurity, Eva Galperin, also told the public in a tweet that the EFF was also begging Twitter to implement e2e.

Twitter wouldnt have to worry about the possibility that the attacker read, exfiltrated, or altered DMs right now if they had implemented e2e for DMs like EFF has been asking them to for years, Galperin tweeted after the event.

In addition to the famous people and organizations that saw Twitter accounts compromised, the crypto community has been abuzz with the conversation. The blockchain intelligence researchers, Whitestream, believe that some of the bitcoin addresses used during the Twitter incident sent funds to known Bitpay and Coinbase addresses. Twitter also responded to the hacking incident and noted that it was aware of the coordination with an insider. Twitter said:

We detected what we believe to be a coordinated social engineering attack by people who successfully targeted some of our employees with access to internal systems and tools. We know they used this access to take control of many highly-visible (including verified) accounts and Tweet on their behalf. Were looking into what other malicious activity they may have conducted or information they may have accessed and will share more here as we have it.

By the end of the day, armchair sleuths noticed that the hackers raked in more than $114,000 worth of BTC and sent out more than half of the funds to external wallets. Moreover, the accounts that were hacked had an aggregate total of close to 140 million Twitter followers.

Speaking about the subject in an email sent to news.Bitcoin.com Danny Scott, CEO at Coincorner, commented on the Twitter hack fiasco.

Its also highly unlikely the hacker did this for monetary gain, Scott said. Contrary to what many people still believe, bitcoin isnt anonymous and all eyes around the world will now be on these bitcoin addresses, and can track where it moves via Bitcoins public blockchain. Scott concluded by adding:

Its a shame that people are now associating Bitcoin with this Twitter hack as Bitcoin itself has never been hacked and wasnt the problem in this scenario. The problem was a centralised service (Twitter) which I feel helps emphasize the benefits of Bitcoins decentralised nature and how an attack like this could not occur on Bitcoin.

‘I’m very proud of the state of the program’: Huyber steps down after 15 years coaching at Mayo – PostBulletin.com

He played under legendary coach Lorne Grosso in the late 1980s.

Huyber went on to play Division I college hockey at Providence College before spending a couple of seasons playing pro hockey. He never strayed far from the game, taking an assistant coach job at Division I Army-West Point for three seasons (1996-99) before becoming the head coach of the USHLs Rochester Mustangs for two seasons (1999-2001).

Four years later, he returned to his roots, joining Grossos staff at Mayo as an assistant coach. Hes been with the Spartans program until Thursday, when he announced his resignation after four seasons as Mayos head coach.

Huyber was just the second head coach in Mayos 55-year history. Grosso retired after the 2015-16 season with 707 career wins, a Minnesota high school boys hockey state record.

Effective immediately, I am tendering my resignation as Mayos Boys Head Hockey Coach, Huyber said. Im very proud of my 15 years coaching Mayo boys hockey and the state of the program as I step down. Id like to thank the current players and parents for their support and wish them luck this upcoming season.

Mayo finished 10-16-1 last season and was 42-56-4 under Huyber. The Spartans were just 4-22-0 in his first season as head coach, 2016-17, but rebounded to go 11-12-1 in 2017-18, followed by seasons of 17-6-2 and 10-16-1.

Huybers decision was not related to hockey; he made a job change in May that requires more of his time -- especially during the times of day when he would be at hockey practice or boarding a bus for a road game in the winter.

Mayo finished below .500 last season, but improved as the season went on, had a strong second half, and beat rival John Marshall in a Section 1AA first-round playoff game.

After a couple of months it is evident that my schedule will not allow me to continue coaching high school hockey, Huyber said. I look forward to spending more time with my wife and teenage son who have supported me for the past 15 years.

Huyber has also been heavily involved with the Rochester Youth Hockey Association over the past decade, serving as its President in 2015-16. In all, Huyber has been a coach at various levels for more than 30 years.

I would like to thank Mayo Activities Director Jeff Whitney, (Mayo High School athletic secretary) Robin Erickson and the Mayo Hockey alumni for their support over the last 15 years. A huge debt of gratitude to my assistant coaches Ron Moffitt, Matt Alexander and Matt Notermann, who have been great to work with and made being at the rink a lot of fun.

Jerry Reinsdorf, Bulls and White Sox owner, thinks Michael Jordan would have reached MLB – CBS Sports

Watch Now: MLB News and Updates (2:22)

ESPN aired the final episode of "The Last Dance," the 10-part documentary chronicling Michael Jordan and the 1997-98 Chicago Bulls, on May 18. Still, time hasn't stopped people from talking about Jordan's career, either on the hardwood or on the diamond.

Consider Bob Nightengale's latest piece for USA Today, in which he talked about Jordan's baseball days with Jerry Reinsdorf, the owner of the Bulls and the Chicago White Sox. (Jordan, of course, played a minor-league season with the White Sox during his basketball sabbatical.) You can add Reinsdorf to the list people who think Jordan could have made it to the majors if he had stuck with the game a season longer.

"Yes, I really do (think so),'' Reinsdorf said to Nightengale. "Maybe as an extra outfielder. Look at what he accomplished.

This sentiment shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone. Back in May, we talked to some of Jordan's former teammates with the Birmingham Barons. They too believed he could've reached the majors in some capacity thanks to his athleticism and work ethic.

"Being with him on a daily basis for six months, and knowing how much work he was putting into it," reliever Barry Johnson said, "I don't think it's that big of a stretch to see him in a big-league uniform."

Even Jordan's biggest detractors conceded that it was possible he would play in the majors.

"Michael can't really play baseball, but he's not terrible," former big-league catcher John Stearns told an Arizona paper in 1994. "He doesn't have power. His defense is way below average. He can't throw. His baseball instincts are poor. But he can run a little bit and can hit a little bit. Considering he's never played baseball all these years, it's incredible that he's able to hold his own here. He's not a prospect for me. But he may play in the big leagues. You may take him as a 25th guy. Why not?"

Jordan instead returned to basketball the following spring, in part because of his refusal to cross the picket line established by the Major League Baseball Players Association.

Coronavirus: Jordan to allow flights from 10 ‘low risk’ countries – The National

Jordan will reopen its airport next month to commercial flights from 10 countries deemed to have low-risk coronavirus levels, a government spokesman said.

Amjad Al Adayleh told the official news agency that a list of green countries from which flights will be allowed into Queen Alia International Airport, the kingdoms main airport south of Amman, include Austria, Switzerland, Germany, Italy, Greece, Cyprus, Hong Kong and Thailand.

No date has been set for the reopening, he said.

Mr Al Adayleh said any resident or national of the 10 countries with a low risk pandemic situation will be allowed entry into Jordan.

Travellers from these destinations will not be subjected to quarantine so long as they have undergone a Covid-19 test 72 hours prior to arrival, he said.

Mr Al Adayleh said that Jordan is a moderate risk country, citing continued infections from within the kingdom.

He said a major indicator of whether the coronavirus risk in Jordan could decrease would be 10 days passing without recording a single case traced to local sources of infection.

The danger is still there despite recording a limited number of local cases lately, Mr Al Adayleh said.

Jordan lifted most coronavirus-related bans last month but an overnight curfew remains in place and gatherings of more than 20 people are not allowed. The government said this week that schools would be allowed to reopen in September.

Official data shows that 1,200 people have been infected with the coronavirus in Jordan and 10 deaths have been recorded.

2019 Study: Jordan Has One of The World’s Highest Smoking Rates – Vaping Post

Public health advocates and industry analysts are attributing the high smoking rates to widespread interference in local policy-making by the worlds major tobacco companies.

The rates are dangerously high and a predictor of a future public health catastrophe, said Firas al-Hawari, a physician and head of the cancer-control office at Ammans King Hussein Cancer Center. Public health advocates and industry analysts are attributing these alarming figures to widespread interference in policy-making by the worlds major tobacco companies, which are said to be allowed to operate in Jordan with comparatively fewer restrictions than in the UK and other countries boasting low smoking rates.

These companies continue to exercise as much political power as they can in wealthy countries, but theyre more successful in lower-income countries where they face less transparency, can operate more in the dark and overwhelm whatever civic societies exist, said Rima Nakkash, an associate professor of public health at the American University of Beirut.

An article by the Guardian has listed the following points after conducting an investigation of the tobacco industry in Jordan:

Meanwhile, studies from around the world keep indicating the potential of e-cigarettes to slash smoking rates. A 2019 report by the US Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), had indicated that contrary to fears by the FDA that vaping could be acting as a gateway to smoking, smoking rates continue to drop amongst all age groups.

The survey data indicate that contrary to the current widespread fear that vaping could be addicting a whole new generation to smoking all over again, cigarette consumption among teenagers, young adults, and the general population, actually continues to decline. Additionally, in line with similar claims by other studies, the report on the 2018 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH), points out that actually e-cigarettes may be contributing to the downward trend in smoking.

Fewer than 1 in 6 people aged 12 or older in 2018 were past month cigarette smokers, notes the SAMHSA report. Cigarette use generally declined between 2002 and 2018 across all age groups. Some of this decline may reflect the use of electronic vaporizing devices (vaping), such as e-cigarettes, as a substitute for delivering nicotine.

Jordan dissolves its Muslim Brotherhood branch – TRT World

In keeping with a regional crackdown, Jordan has been tightening restrictions on the Brotherhood over the last few years, forbidding their public rallies, arresting vocal government dissenters and shutting down offices.

Jordan's top court has dissolved the country's branch of the Muslim Brotherhood, a transnational movement.

"The Court of Cassation yesterday (Wednesday) issued a final verdict ruling that the Muslim Brotherhood group is dissolved ... for failing to rectify its legal status under Jordanian law," the official said on Thursday, requesting anonymity.

The Muslim Brotherhood, founded in Egypt in 1928, is a movement with both charitable and political arms.

It has faced years of pressure, especially in the wake of the 2011 Arab Spring uprisings, and has been outlawed as a "terrorist" group in Egypt and banned in several other countries.

READ MORE:Who are the Muslim Brotherhood?

Pressure on Brotherhood

Amman had tolerated the group's political arm for decades, but since 2014 authorities have considered it illegal, arguing its licence was not renewed under a 2014 law on political parties.

It continued to operate, but its relations with the Jordanian state deteriorated further from 2015 when the government authorised an offshoot group, the Muslim Brotherhood Association.

In April 2016, security services closed the Brotherhood's Amman headquarters and several regional offices, transferring their ownership to the splinter group in a step the movement denounced as political.

The original Brotherhood took the case to court in a bid to retrieve the properties, but the court in its verdict on Wednesday ordered it dissolved.

The Brotherhood argues that it had already obtained licences to operate under previous laws in the 1940s and 1950s.

Sheikh Hamza Mansur, head of the organisation's ruling council, said the group would appeal against Wednesday's ruling.

"The Muslim Brotherhood ... is a model of moderation and an important element in strengthening national unity, so dissolving it is not in the national interest," Mansur said.

The Jordanian breakaway group aimed to sever ties with the Brotherhood in Egypt, where hundreds of supporters have been killed and thousands detained since the army ousted country's first democratically elected president Mohamed Morsi in 2013.

Jordan's Islamic Action Front, a political party aligned with the original Brotherhood chapter there, has had 16 members of parliament since 2016 elections.

It had boycotted polls in 2010 and 2013. Polls are set for later this year but the coronavirus crisis has cast doubt over whether they will take place.

The Jordanian branch of the Muslim Brotherhood has wide grassroots support in the kingdom.

The movement is also banned in Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and other countries in the region, but is supported by Turkey and Qatar.

Where To Buy The Off-White x Air Jordan 4 WMNS Sail – Sneaker News

Official images of Virgil Ablohs Off-White Jordan 4 have surfaced, revealing in detail what could be one of the years most coveted sneaker release. Decked out in a near-tonal cream upper with opaque fixtures on the lace eyelets, tongue/upper netting, and heel-tab, this latest release by the Louis Vuitton figurehead throws in the trademark touches in the Helvetica text on the upper and the AIR boldly bannered above the visible Air unit. The construction of these Off-White Jordans are also consistent with Virgils previous two Air Jordan drops, with exposed sponge at the sockliner and synthetic overlays attributing to that deconstructed look that the entire The Ten has been notable for. Jordan Spieth has no trouble getting off to good starts. But can this one finally lead to a good finish? – Golf Digest

A day like today I can get a lot of confidence from, Jordan Spieth said Thursday after overcoming an early mishap to open the 45th Memorial Tournament with a two-under 70 at Muirfield Village Golf Club.

Spieths uneven golf over the last few years makes one wonder if he truly feels this way or if he is trying to talk himself into such sentiment. For now, assume the former, because on a blustery morning in Dublin, Ohio, Spieth was relatively steady when a lot of his high-powered peers struggled. His score put him two off the lead after the morning wave wrapped up play. He deserved to feel buoyed by the effort.

The outing, which included an eagle, a double bogey, three birdies and a bogey, was especially important given the way he missed the cut last week at Muirfield Village in the Workday Charity Open, a result that dropped him out of the world top 60 for the first time since July 2013. Spieth hovered around the cutline throughout his second round but looked securely inside it with two holes remaining. But he played a poor bunker shot at the par-3 eighth hole, his 17th hole of the day, leading to a double bogey. He finished at even par; two under made the cut.

It was only the second time in eight starts at Muirfield Village that Spieth missed the cut, the other coming two years ago in the Memorial. Thursdays 70 marked the sixth time he has begun the Memorial with a sub-par round, and he did it on a setup considerably more exacting than a week ago when the greens were slower and the rough more manageable.

Spieth eagled the par-5 11th hole, his second of the day, converting from four feet after an approach from 211 yards. But he gave it right back when he doubled the par-3 12th by coming up short in the water.

He shook it off quickly with a birdie at No. 13 from 12 feet. Key moment.

Yeah, I was fine, Spieth said of the miscue. You go into a day like today, even when you know the golf course was going to be challenging, its almost like going into a major championship. Youve just got to be a prepared for a little bit of everything, and it felt like I stayed really cool after 12 and then moved on and made a nice birdie on the next. Hit my best drive of the day, hit a wedge in there and made about a 12-footer. When that one went in, it was really nice. I felt like I was playing under-par golf. I felt like I hadnt missed a shot, so it was nice to be under par and not still at even.

Just knowing that the wind is going to pick up, you want to be a couple under making the turn there.

Spieth was seen working on the putting green at Muirfield Village on Sunday as the final round of the Workday Charity Open was being played. But it was his ball-striking that earned him a score that was tied for the third-best in the morning wave. He lost strokes to the field on the greens Thursday, but he was 3.882 in strokes gained/tee to green, which ranked second in the field in the early going.

I think putting is as challenging as anything in these conditions, he said, noting how the wind and the increased speed of the greens from a week ago made things tricky.

He hit eight fairways and 12 greens and generally stayed out of trouble after the 12th. So, just maybe, he did have a reason to feel a little more confident about his game. He has worked hard to find a swing that is more reliable. Its still a work in progress. But he is encouraged.

Ive actually made a lot of progress. It may not kind of look like that via results, but Ive made a lot of progress in how Im seeing sight lines, committing to lines. All in all, now its just about trying to kind of find the timing element as I go up the bag. The rest of the game is starting to feel kind of back to normal, and Im kind of piecing together my swing, but the timing element is whats kind of left for me. That just comes from on-course reps.

Hes had plenty of reps this truncated season. Workday was just his second weekend off in 12 starts. Reps matter. But reps like Thursday matter more.
