Volcanic island spewing ash and lava spotted from space – Space.com

Satellites have spotted ash and lava spewing from the young, remote island of Nishinoshima in the Pacific Ocean.

Nishinoshima is a volcanic island located approximately 600 miles (1,000 kilometers) south of Tokyo, Japan. Volcanic activity has picked up at Nishinoshima, one of the Ogasawara Islands, since late-May, according to a statement from NASA Earth Observatory.

Two NASA satellites have captured aerial views of the island, tracking its growth over the last few months, as well as vigorous plumes of ash and lava. The satellites have observed that the island is experiencing a growth spurt following this recent volcanic activity.

The Landsat 8 satellite, a joint effort of NASA and the U.S. Geological Survey, captured a striking photo of the island on Sunday (July 4). The false-color image combines shortwave infrared and visible wavelengths, revealing a heat signature showing erupting lava and the relative coolness of the dark ash plume as it blows north across the ocean.

The Landsat 8 satellite image also shows bright purple clouds over the island, which represent either steam from the volcano or lava from vaporizing seawater, according to the statement.

On July 3, the Japan Coast Guard reported massive volcanic plumes that rose as high as 15,400 feet (4,700 meters) above sea level. Those plumes grew drastically in size by the next day.

Reports from July 4 revealed that volcanic bombs, or larger fragments of solid and molten material, were ejected up to 1.6 miles (2.5 km) and clouds of ash reached up to 27,200 feet (8,300 meters) the highest altitude recorded since the volcano emerged in 2013, according to the statement.

The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASAs Aqua satellite also captured a stunning view of the island's volcanic activity on Monday (July 6). The natural-color image shows a volcanic plume stretching hundreds of kilometers to the north and several thousand meters into the sky.

Nishinoshima erupted above sea level in November 2013, generating lava flows that remained active through November 2015. Frequent volcanic activity has fueled the growth of the island.

Volcanic activity on Nishinoshima started to pick up again in late May 2020, triggering a vigorous growth spurt by mid-June. Reports from the Geospatial Information Authority of Japan suggest the southern shore of the island grew by at least 492 feet (150 meters) between June 19 and July 3, according to the statement.

You can see the growth of Nishinoshima and the evolution of the island's volcanic activity online at NASA Earth Observatory. NASA satellite images of the island date back to 2013.

NASA and ESA to reveal closest images ever taken of the sun – CBS News

NASA and the European Space Agency (ESA) are releasing new images of the sun Thursday morning, bringing humans closer to our host star than ever before. The photos are the first captured by the Solar Orbiter, which launched earlier this year.

After launching on February 9, Solar Orbiter made its first close pass of the sun in mid-June, despite the team facing setbacks due to the coronavirus pandemic. As it passed the sun, it turned on all 10 of its instruments together for the first time, the agencies said in a statement.

The agencies said the new photos are the closest ever taken of the sun. They will be released Thursday morning at 8 a.m. EDT.

"The first images are exceeding our expectations," Daniel Mller, Solar Orbiter Project Scientist at ESA, said in a statement. "We can already see hints of very interesting phenomena that we have not been able to observe in detail before. The 10 instruments on board Solar Orbiter work beautifully, and together provide a holistic view of the Sun and the solar wind. This makes us confident that Solar Orbiter will help us answer profound open questions about the Sun."

During its first orbit, Solar Orbiter got within 47 million miles of the star's surface about half the distance between the sun and the Earth. ESA said the satellite will eventually get much closer to the sun.

Now that it has completed its first pass, the spacecraft is slowly adjusting its orbit. In late 2021, it will get as close as 26 million miles from the sun's surface closer than the planet Mercury to observe the first proper view of the star's poles.

Scientists hope the mission can help answer some of their biggest questions about the development of planets, the emergence of life, the inner workings of our solar system and the origins of the universe and how it works.

The images aren't the only new footage we have of the sun. In June, NASA released a 10-year time-lapse video of the star, captured by the agency's Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO).

SDO gathered 425 million high-resolution images of the sun 20 million gigabytes of data over the course of a decade. It took a new picture of the sun every .75 seconds, leading to the spectacular composite video.

Three space missions heading to Mars, from NASA, China and UAE – ABC News

July is a big month for missions to Mars.

Three new spacecraft from NASA, China and the United Arab Emirates are due to lift off on their journey to the Red Planet.

That's because there is window between mid-July and mid-August when Earth and Mars are in a good position relative to each other to allow the shortest possible trip.

If the mission launches go as planned, the first of which is due this week, the spacecraft will arrive early next year.

They will join a slew of other orbiters, landers and rovers that are already probing the planet.

And each is tasked to look at questions that no other spacecraft has answered before as the race to find evidence of past life on Mars heats up.

The entry of China and the UAE into Mars exploration, a field that has so far been dominated by the US and Russia, will benefit future missions to the Red Planet, said Alice Gorman, a space archaeologist at Flinders University.

"The more nations entering [deep space exploration] increases the chance of success ... and builds up the library of proven engineering heritage."

Along with new science, these nations are also testing different types of technologies.

So let's take a quick look at what each mission has to offer.

NASA's Mars 2020 mission plans to put a new rover on the Red Planet called Perseverance.

If it survives the landing it will be the United States' 10th successful attempt to put a robot on Mars since 1975, and will join the Curiosity rover and Mars Insight probe.

Perseverance is the first rover ever tasked with finding evidence of past life on Mars, said Abigail Allwood, an Australian geologist at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory who is in charge of PIXL, one of the seven instruments onboard the rover.

"Previous missions have been looking for evidence of water and evidence of habitability," Dr Allwood said.

"No mission has ever been given the mandate to look for evidence of life."

The rover, which looks almost identical to Curiosity except for its wheels, will descend towards Mars using the same 'seven minutes of terror' technique as its predecessor albeit using new terrain technology to help guide its landing.

All going well, it will touch down in an old lake bed known as Jezero Crater.

The rover is kitted out with several tools that will investigate the geology of the landform in minute detail, and use a drill to collect sediment samples to be returned to Earth for analysis in 2026.

The Mars 2020 mission will also be the first mission to attempt test flights of a small unmanned helicopter called Ingenuity.

The helicopter, which is strapped to the bottom of the rover, will be released once the rover lands.

"If that helicopter flight is successful it will be huge for Mars exploration," Dr Allwood said.

Loading...

Swarms of small helicopters could be used to map the surface where samples come from, and a successful flight could demonstrate a capacity that can aid human missions.

"[Unmanned aerial vehicles] could be the next thing we see before any human missions," she said.

The Perseverance rover will also be doing some of the groundwork for setting up a base.

Onboard are tools that will test a method of extracting oxygen from the atmosphere (which is 96 per cent carbon dioxide), identify resources such as subsurface water and minerals, and gather more data on dust storms and weather conditions.

The mission is currently slated to launch around July 30.

China's new mission will send the first orbiter/lander/rover combo to Mars.

Called Tianwen-1 which means Heavenly Questions it is the nation's second attempt to send a mission to the Red Planet.

China's first mission, the 'Yinghuo-1' Mars orbiter, was lost in 2012 when the Russian space agency spacecraft it was piggybacking a ride on failed and crashed back to Earth.

But now, China is using its own technologies that have been successfully used in its space program, including two Moon landings.

It will use parachutes developed for its Shenzhou crewed spaceflight program, and propulsion and autonomous guidance systems and designs used in its Chang'e-3 and Chang'e-4 moon landers.

If the spacecraft reaches Mars and touches down, China will become the third country to land on the Red Planet.

It's a very ambitious goal, said Andrew Jones, a space journalist who follows the China space program.

"The failure rate for Mars missions is around 50 per cent, so to try to combine [the orbiter/lander/rover] for your first attempt at a [solo] interplanetary mission is very challenging," Mr Jones said.

US: 7 orbiters, 5 landers, 4 rovers

Russia: 2 orbiters (1 joint with EU), 1 lander

EU: 2 orbiters (1 joint with Russia)

India: 1 orbiter

US: 3 orbiters, 1 lander, 1 probe

Russia: 7 orbiters, 6 landers (including joint EU project), 1 rover, 2 probes

EU: 2 landers (including joint Russian project)

Japan: 1 orbiter

China: 1 orbiter (joint mission with Russia)

*Excluding flybys

Landing on Mars is a lot more challenging than landing on the Moon.

The Red Planet has a thin atmosphere, which heats up the spacecraft but doesn't slow it down very effectively, so the timing of parachutes and rockets is critical.

Although the exact landing site of the Chinese mission has not been revealed, it is likely to be somewhere in an area known as Utopia Planitia.

"These are very low elevation areas so that gives more atmosphere to slow down the landing attempt," Mr Jones said.

The location is also good for the operation of the mission's solar powered rover.

Another potential touchdown area is Chryse Planitia, close to the landing sites of NASA'S Viking 1 and Pathfinder.

Like the new NASA mission, Tianwen-1 plans to explore the Red Planet's atmosphere, use ground-penetrating radar to peer below the surface, and look for evidence of past life.

"Having two ground penetrating radars in two different places on Mars brings a lot of science value."

But before even attempting a complex landing, the spacecraft must actually reach Mars

To do this, China is using its biggest rocket: the Long March 5. After one semi-successful flight and a failure, the rocket finally put a satellite into geostationary orbit late last year.

But the launch of the Tianwen-1 mission will be the first attempt at getting the rocket into an orbit that will put a spacecraft on a path to Mars.

"It shouldn't be that much different, but still it's something they haven't done," Mr Jones said.

While no official launch date from the Wenchang Satellite Launch Center has been announced, Mr Jones predicted it would take off around July 23.

Meanwhile, the United Arab Emirates is planning to become the first Arab nation to send a spacecraft to the planet.

If it is successful, the 'Al Amal' or 'Hope' spacecraft will join six other orbiters from the US, Europe and India currently surveying Mars from orbit.

Timed to arrive 50 years after the UAE was founded, it is also carrying the aspirations of its nation and Arab and Islamic science.

"The UAE is small compared to those other nations but they are putting so many resources into their space programs and they've made it really clear that these are priorities for them," Dr Gorman said.

About the size of a small car flanked by two solar panels, the hexagonal-shaped orbiter is on a two-year mission to explore the Red Planet's upper and lower atmosphere and weather.

Kitted out with three scientific instruments, it hopes to answer questions about why the Red Planet is losing its upper atmosphere to space, and to create a global picture of how the Martian atmosphere changes from day to day and season to season.

The spacecraft will be launched from Tanegashima, a remote Japanese island.

The original launch date of July 15 (AEST) has been pushed back to July 17 (AEST) according to latest reports from the UAE space agency.

Once it separates from its rocket, the spacecraft will rely on star-tracker sensors, which recognise constellations, to guide it to Mars.

Loading...

All going well, the three missions will reach Mars in February next year.

The Mars 2020 mission plans to touch down on February 18, while the Chinese Tianwen-1 mission will survey the Red Planet using a high-res camera onboard the orbiter before selecting a landing site in April.

But if the missions miss the launch window, they will not be able to fly for another two years when Earth and Mars are aligned again.

NASA's Mars 2020 mission has already been delayed twice. Originally it was planned to lift off around July 17, but with a current launch date of at least July 30 it has used up half the window.

A fourth mission to Mars which was also due to lift off this month the European Union and Russian Space Agency's ExoMars mission carrying the Rosalind Franklin rover has already been postponed until 2022.

George Fitzhugh and the defense of slavery | Voices | republic-online.com – Miami County Republic

Pro-slavery advocates before and during the Civil War worked to defend the morality and necessity of American chattel slavery, and one of their defenses was that African-American slaves were actually much better treated than free white Americans.

George Fitzhugh wrote in Cannibals All! or Slaves Without Masters, published in 1856, of the benefits of American chattel slavery for African-Americans versus the plight of free white Americans.

But we not only boast that the White Slave Trade is more exacting and fraudulent (in fact, though not in intention) than Black Slavery; but we also boast that is tis more cruel , in leaving the laborer to care for himself and his family out of the pittance which skill or capital have allowed him to retain. When the days labor is ended, he is free, but is overburdened with the cares of family and household, which makes his freedom and empty and delusive mockery. But his employer is really free, and may enjoy the profit made by others labor, without a care, or a trouble, as to their well-being. The negro slave is free too, when the labors of the day are over, and free in mind as well as body; for the master provides food, raiment, house, fuel, and everything else to the physical well being of himself and his family. The masters labors commence just when the slaves end. No wonder men should prefer white slavery to capital, to negro slavery, since it is more profitable, and is free from all the cares and labors of black slave-holding.

The defenders of American chattel slavery argued that free white Americans were wage slaves, forced to work long hours for low wages in horrid working conditions, which was actually quite true. This gave credibility to the pro-slavery argument in the minds of white Americans in 1856.

Slaveholders asserted that they were benevolent to their slaves and actually treated their slaves well, whereas northern factory owners and other employers abused and overworked their white American employees and then callously cast them out of their work places to fend for themselves, casting the freedom of white Americans as a miserable existence.

Pro-slavery advocates argued that African-American slaves, on the other hand, lived secure lives of comfort and security under the paternalistic care of enlightened and benevolent Christian slave holders.

Indeed, Fitzhugh argued that The negro slaves in the South are the happiest, and in a sense, the freest people in the world, and that they were well treated, living in a utopian world without stress or want.

Free white American workers, on the other hand, were described as wage slaves who were held in thrall by greedy psychopathic employers, and thus abolitionists and free soil advocates were villains who wanted to wrench the slaves from their utopian existence in slavery into the horrific misery that free white Americans had to endure in their daily lives.

This view of slavery still persists in the Lost Cause narrative of the Civil War, which persists to the present day.

Boohoo complaints put spotlight on supply chains and working practices – Compliance Week

The reporter also found the factorybased in Leicester, the only U.K. city that has had its lockdown extended by two weeks because of a spike in coronavirus caseshad been operating continually since March without complying with recommended social-distancing measures. It is also accused the factory of pressuring workersthe majority of which were Asian and more susceptible to infectionto turn up for work even if they had tested positive for COVID-19.

The factorysignposted as Jaswal Fashionshad actually ceased trading in 2018 and was not a declared supplier. In a press statement, Boohoowhich owns fashion brands PrettyLittleThing, Karen Millen, and Coastsaid it appeared a different firm was using Jaswals former premises and that it was trying to establish the identity of this company and why its garments were in its hands.

Sarah Riding, a partner at law firm Gowling WLG, says that the fact that there are not proactive checks in place already at Boohoo is disappointing, given their prominent place in the market and claims of high ethical commercial standards.

On July 8 the company stated it would launch an immediate independent review of its U.K. supply chain; commit 10 million (U.S. $12 million) to root out supply chain malpractice; and speed up its independent third-party supply chain review with ethical audit and compliance specialists. The first update on its review will take place in September.

Its attempt to regain its ethical credentials has, however, so far not paid off.

Major retailers including Next, Asos, and Zalando dropped Boohoo following the allegations, while one of its largest shareholders, Standard Life Aberdeen (SLA), also divested most of its stock in the company.

Lesley Duncan, SLAs deputy head of UK equities, said that having spoken to Boohoos management team a number of times this week in light of recent concerning allegations, we view their response as inadequate in scope, timeliness, and gravity.

If a suppliers practices relating to human rights, labor standards, or environmental protection are found to be substandard, it is the customer company that will be held to account.

John Perry, Managing Director, SCALA

The case has highlighted a number of ongoing concerns over workers health and safety that have become exacerbated during the pandemic, as well as inherent weaknesses in companies monitoring of their supply chainsoften in industries reliant on high rotations of unskilled and (often undocumented) migrant labor.

Other U.K. companies have also fallen foul of abuses in their supply chains. On July 13 fast-fashion firm Quiz suspended one of the suppliers to its suppliers after claims another factory (also based in Leicester) offered a worker just 3 an hour to make its clothes. The national minimum wage for people over 25 years old is 8.72 an hour.

The National Crime Agency and the Gangmasters and Labour Abuse Authority (GLAA) have since visited a number of business premises in the Leicester area to assess some of the concerns that have been raised in respect of modern slavery and have said that further visits are likely to continue. So far, they have not identified any offenses under the Modern Slavery Act 2015.

Transparency in supply chains has been hampered by the pandemic in several ways. Business interruption has caused some trusted and approved suppliers to go bust while an inability to source goods and materials quickly has forced some companies to switch contractors without conducting the usual levels of due diligence or conduct site visits due to travel restrictions and health and safety concerns during the lockdown. Approved suppliers may have also subcontracted part of the work due to financial necessity, despite the terms of their contracts.

Chris Wrigley, co-head of law firm Osborne Clarkes global compliance team, says that COVID-19 has made scrutiny of supply chains harder because of the difficulties in conducting audits and, in some sectors, the need to change supply chains in response to the pandemic. However, supplier due diligence should be ongoing and, as restrictions ease, there will be opportunities to address gaps that have been created by the pandemic.

One of the problems with monitoring supply chains is that companies tend to focus on getting more assurance on working practices in high-risk countriesin the case of garment manufacturing, this would include India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Cambodia, and other developing countries: They take it as read that suppliers on their own doorsteps will act in accordance with their contractual obligations. The Boohoo and Quiz cases have shown how fanciful such expectations can be.

Experts say it has become increasingly obvious organizations need to talk to their suppliers about how they are monitoring their supply chains to ensure appropriate protections and standards are maintained. Companies also need to be prepared to enforce these expectations by contractual compliance obligations in their supplier contracts and codes of conduct, as well as carry out external audits and site visits. Further, if suppliers are going to subcontract part of the work, companies should insist on knowing what work will be contracted out, and to whom, so that they can be added to an approved list.

The U.K. Modern Slavery Act is meant to encourage businesses to understand where in their business and supply chains there are risks of employee exploitation or modern slavery and then identify effective steps and use their influence to improve conditions.

The legislation, however, only requires companies to make statements in their annual reports about what measuresif anythey are taking to uncover incidents of slavery in their supply chains. There are no criminal sanctions attached. Instead, the government hopes companies will do the right thing because failure to do so will hit their bottom lines more harshly than any fine could hope to achieve as customers and investors dump them.

Experts largely agree. If a suppliers practices relating to human rights, labor standards, or environmental protection are found to be substandard, it is the customer company that will be held to account, says John Perry, managing director of SCALA, a provider of management services for the supply chain and logistics sector.

India asks local leaders to boost anti-trafficking drive amid virus threat – Thomson Reuters Foundation

By Anuradha Nagaraj

CHENNAI, India, July 15 (Thomson Reuters Foundation) - Village councils and community groups in India have been asked to protect children from traffickers and help authorities identify and rescue missing residents, amid concerns that the coronavirus pandemic is pushing more people into modern slavery.

India's home affairs ministry this month issued an advisory urging state governments to set up or improve local anti-trafficking units, and work closely with community leaders to warn people about traffickers taking advantage of the outbreak.

Local councils may be asked to keep a register of villagers and track their movements to prevent children being "transported on a large scale for wage labour, prostitution and trafficking", said the directive by the ministry's women safety division.

State governments have also been tasked with launching anti-trafficking awareness campaigns, in addition to ramping up surveillance at bus stops, train stations and state borders.

"Generation of awareness at all levels is considered a very potent and effective weapon to fight the crime of trafficking and exploitation of women and children," the advisory said.

The home ministry could not be reached for further comment.

As India slowly opens up after months of lockdown to control the spread of COVID-19, officials and activists fear countless people without work, food or money may fall prey to traffickers.

Debt bondage islikely to increase as people struggle to pay off high-interest loans while child workers may slip under the radar andreturn to work as industries re-open, charities said.

"Children or youth are more likely to be persuaded or tricked by criminals who will take advantage of their emotional instability and missing support system," the advisory said.

Rishi Kant, founder of the anti-trafficking charity Shakti Vahini, said special measures and extra vigilance were necessary to combat the crime across India in the wake of the pandemic.

"Special committees under the leadership of village heads will have first-hand information on strangers in their neighbourhood or families that are in distress," he told the Thomson Reuters Foundation. "Both will help prevent the crime."

The federal government in March disbursed one billion rupees ($13.3 million) to strengthen existing anti-human trafficking police units at state level and establish new ones along India's borders with countries such as Bangladesh and Nepal.

About 2,400 human trafficking cases were reported in India in 2018, with nearly half of the victims aged under 18, according to the latest available government crime data.

State Board of Education condemns hate speech, takes aim at racial bias in schools – The-review

The Ohio Board of Education condemned hate speech and racism in schools, directing the Department of Education on Tuesday to review state curriculum models and tests for racial bias and recommend ways to "ensure that racism and the struggle for equality are accurately addressed."

The resolution, approved by a vote of 12-5, "strongly recommends that all Ohio school districts begin a reflection and internal examination of their own involving teachers, parents, students and community to review curriculum; hiring practices; discipline strategies, suspension and expulsions; classroom resources including text books; and professional development."

It also requires bias training for Department of Education employees.

The resolution by board President Laura Kohler follows the May 25 killing of George Floyd, an unarmed Black man, while in the custody of Minneapolis police. Floyds death and others of Black Americans at the hands of police sparked demonstrations in Ohio and across the country.

"We must confront our own bias. We must learn about how racism impacts society and how to recognize and eliminate racism perhaps even in our own hearts," Kohler, of New Albany, told colleagues at the boards monthly meeting, calling the resolution among the most important of her tenure.

"We must begin to understand people who have experienced things that we have not. We must recognize the humanity in each of us, and affirm that each child is equally important and deserves an equal opportunity to thrive."

In its resolution, "the state Board of Education condemns, in the strongest possible terms, white supremacy ideology, hate speech, hate crimes and violence in the service of hatred. These immoral ideologies and actions deserve no place in our country, state and school system.

"The starting point of our work in racial equity must be reflection and internal examination, whereby the board will look for ways to engage our members in open and courageous conversations on racism and, inequity."

The resolution cites several inequities, including: Black male students lagging behind their white counterparts in graduation rates and other measures; Black male students disproportionately affected by suspensions, expulsions and zero-tolerance discipline policies; and "systemic inequity in education has relegated millions of children of color to under-resourced, struggling schools; and significant gaps between the performance of Black students compared to their white peers exist even in generously resourced schools."

In response to objections by some members, the board agreed to drop from the resolution references to "white privilege" and "white supremacy."

Kohler said students living in poverty and students of color, are at a disadvantage because they do not have equal access to resources like internet access and textbooks

"But Black students often face another, more insidious obstacle to success," Kohler said. "The long lasting and still present effects of our countrys history of slavery, oppression, and exclusion have created barriers to access, opportunity and outcomes...

"Generational poverty and the absence of two parent families have depressed Black students educational attainment. In addition, some of the people and systems assigned to lift them up have let them down because of their own bias and racism. Is it any wonder that Black students are less likely to perform as well as their white peers? That they are less likely to graduate? That they are less likely to be engaged in fulfilling, meaningful and enjoyable work that earns a living wage?"

Images of Hunger and Humiliation: The Memory against Forgetting – The Citizen

The struggle of man against power is the struggle of memory against forgetting. Milan Kundera, The Book of Laughter and Forgetting

The images of migrant workers and their plight have receded from our screens; perhaps most of them have already returned to their villages.

Images are transient in the digital world, replaced quickly by other sets of images begging for attention. The images that haunted us were of working families who walked hundreds of kilometres during the sudden nationwide lockdown, haunted by starvation, their belongings carried on their heads, their children walking barefoot or in broken flipflops, the old and sick carried on shoulders.

These images told of the hunger and humiliation they suffered on their long journey, and of the many who died cruel deaths before reaching home. The images are already beginning to be history in public memory.

If the post-pandemic, post-Covid world is to be restructured as inclusive and just, as equitable and empathetic, then the experiences of migrant workers must be saved from receding into history, for the lockdown was not only a tragic experience, it also exposed the nature of the urban economy that thrives on exploiting the labour of informalised workers.

How can the disembodied poor be saved from becoming history? By remembering.

By re-membering who the dispossessed people are, remembering how our lockdown drove them to such despair, remembering what they encountered on their long journey home, and the political and social failures to respond to the crisis, we may be able to build the foundation for a better, and kinder, and equitable, and inclusive, and just world.

The urban informalised economy in India is predominantly worked by an estimated 100 million migrant labourers from rural areas, who work in construction, manufacturing, hospitality, trade, services and sundry other jobs that city-dwellers require.

Without a work contract, health insurance, or any financial, public, or social security to buffer them through a crisis, migrant workers in the informalised sectors of the economy are prone to vulnerability and destitution, as their exodus in the wake of the lockdown showed.

The daily-wage economy is even more precarious within the informalised economy and daily-wage earners are more vulnerable. It is estimated that around 40% of Indian workers earn a daily wage, of as little as 400 or 500 rupees, and women daily wagers earn even less.

The vast majority of migrant workers who come to the cities to earn an income are either farmers with small or marginal landholds, or landless labourers.

What drove millions of workers to undertake the long and arduous journey on foot? The fear of imminent starvation. The basic need for bare survival overtook their fear of the deadly virus. They were placed in a situation where death from lack of food became a more immediate possibility than death from the disease. And if they were to die in any case, as many said, they chose to risk their lives and reach home somehow.

People felt orphaned and abandoned by their employers and governments. A feeling of rejection, non-belonging, hopelessness, betrayal, and sheer despair is palpable when we hear their voices on the videos recorded by journalists.

The pictures are equally haunting: public authorities spraying toxic chemical disinfectants to sanitise these workers; a child asleep on a suitcase while the mother drags it; a child trying to wake his dead mother on a railway platform; scattered rotis on a railway track where a train crushed 16 workers to death; people walking in the dead of night to avoid the scorching sun; people packed inside a cargo carrier.

There are many such images we need to search and remember.

There was a total political failure in responding to the migrant workers crisis. That no one thought about the millions of workers in the cities who would be jobless and stranded points to the absence of the majority of Indians from political decision-making.

Some of them left the cities as soon as the lockdown was declared; others waited for their employers and the government to give them some assurance and help, failing which they set out for their villages.

Meanwhile, the union government was telling the apex court that there were no migrant workers on the roads, even as thousands of them were making the hazardous journey on national highways.

Meanwhile, three state governments - Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh - proposed to change labour laws to make them more amenable to employers.

Uttar Pradesh proposed to suspend for three years the legal protections dealing with wages, working hours, and health and safety measures among others that safeguard the rights of workers, thus reducing the already precarious informalised wage-work to modern slavery.

After 47 days of this, when special trains were organised by the railways to take the migrant workers home, the hassle and expense of booking tickets itself created panic among people, and many had to take loans or sell their belongings to get a ticket home.

The trains went on detours, taking a much longer time to reach their destinations, further exhausting an already weary and hungry people.

It is alleged that the government of Karnataka even cancelled the special trains to keep workers captive for construction industrialists.

Not only did the union and state governments not put any pressure on these industrialists to pay their workers during the lockdown, their proposals to change the labour laws and attempts to keep workers captive revealed a State that was ready to sacrifice the poor for keeping the industries of the rich running.

The police, instead of facilitating the distressed workers, gladly assumed even more authority. Caning ordinary people, making them crawl as punishment, forcing them to travel in vehicles that were carrying dead bodies - there were numerous such stories of police action. The police saw the workers as a menace and dehumanised them.

Along with the political failure, our society failed colossally to respond to this crisis. From tacit support to legitimise government inaction or obduracy, to deflecting the crisis, to complete silence as if this were not an issue that matters, the complicity of the propertied classes was all too apparent.

Our societys indifference, apathy, and hostility were staggering. This cannot be shrugged off only as a lack of moral conscience. It exposed our allegiance to the State and to the neoliberal economy, the two forces responsible for the crisis.

The same people would have responded to a crisis caused by flood or cyclone, because they see these as natures fury but the beneficiaries of a lopsided economic growth propelled by liberalised big business supported by the State chose to turn their eyes away as the edifice on which our riches are based came crumbling down.

This social failure was further exposed by our indulgence in aestheticising, romanticising and glamorising migrant workers.

A picture of a 15 year old girl who cycled 1,200 kilometres from Gurugram to Bihar, carrying her injured father on the pillion, was seen as beautiful. People who undertook long and arduous journeys on foot were saluted and appreciation was showered on them. Their reaching home became a feel-good sight.

It says a lot about people, about a society, that sees aesthetics, romance and glamour in sorrow, cruelty, hunger, and death. It was sheer desperation and willpower that gave these workers the agency, but to appreciate that agency without acknowledging the contexts and reasons is to hide, or worse, approve what led to the crisis.

Millions of informalised workers constituting the workforce in urban economy remain invisible to city-dwellers. The crisis that unfolded during the lockdown exposed an exploitative economy that survives on the cheapened labour of people who leave their villages and a starved agrarian economy to come to the cities in search of work.

If we are to change the structure of exploitation and inequality, the invisibility of migrant workers must be made visible. They did become visible for a short while. We must not push them back into invisibility again.

the great force of history comes from the fact that we carry it within us, are unconsciously controlled by it in many ways, and history is literally present in all that we do. It could scarcely be otherwise, since it is to history that we owe our frames of reference, our identities, and our aspirations. James Baldwin, Unnameable Objects, Unspeakable Crimes

3rd Coast Grappling Kumite IV FULL RESULTS Cyborg Defeats Fellipe Andrew To Win $10,000 – Jiu-Jitsu Times

3rd Coast Grappling: Kumite IV has concluded, capping off its fourth impressive event with a pair of matches worthy of the finals.

In the main superfight of the evening, Gordon Ryan took on Brian Marvin in a ten-minute exhibition match to raise money for the We Defy Foundation.

Ryan immediately pulled guard at the start of the ten-minute match, soon coming up to pass Marvins guard instead. Marvin came up and got his leg caught in Ryans quarter-guard before both competitors disengaged, with Ryan resuming playing open guard. Marvin worked on collecting Ryans back, going for an armbar that Ryan quickly escaped. Ryan then took the top position, and both athletes fell back and teased leg locks before Ryan once again came back on top. Ryan then worked Marvin into a body triangle before letting Marvin out. Marvin worked past Ryans guard, but Ryan was able to come on top and work for an armbar from the back. Marvin came up on top and briefly sat back for a leg lock, but Ryan once again took the top position, with Marvin fighting from the bottom in half-guard. Ryan shimmied to mount and isolated Marvins head and arm, rolling up to his back before transitioning to the top position. With fifteen seconds left, Ryan took Marvins back, sunk in the rear naked choke, and finished the match with three seconds left to go.

In the final match of the absolute Kumite bracket, Roberto Cyborg Abreu took on Fellipe Andrew.

Andrew started the match by pulling guard, but Cyborg quickly got past his legs. As Cyborg moved around, he was nearly able to take Andrews back, but Andrew managed to roll out and avoid it. As Andrew resumed playing open guard, Cyborg came down from on top and secured a guillotine choke. Although Andrew stood and attempted to defend, it wasnt enough, and Cyborg was able to get the tap just a couple minutes into the match.

Cyborg was declared the winner and will go home with the $10,000 prize and the title of Kumite IV champion.

Review: ‘Teen Titans Go! The Night Begins to Shine 2 – TV Source Magazine

Cartoon Networks Teen Titans GO! aired the follow up to The Night Begins to Shine mini-series with The Night Begins to Shine 2: Youre The One. Instead of airing as a mini-series this time around, the network compiled all 5 episodes into an hour, commercial free, movie event.

The first mini-series, titled The Day the Night Stopped Beginning to Shine and Became Dark Even Though It Was the Day saw the Teen Titans, Cyborg, Robin, Starfire, Beast Boy and Raven travel to an 80s inspired alternate dimension after an evil dragon tries to steal the song The Night Begins to Shine. The team has to assemble the original creators of the song, B.E.R., in the real world in an attempt to have a chance to defeat the dragon. Cameos in the first mini-series included CeeLo Green and Fall Out Boy who are drawn into the alternate reality by the power of the song.

The song The Night Begins to Shine first appeared in the series as a song Cyborg sings briefly in an episode. It returns again later in the series as a major plot to an entire episode where Cyborg uses the song as a way to get himself pumped up, eventually annoying the rest of the team. The team bans Cyborg from listening to the song and he becomes powerless. The song is so catchy that it eventually brings the entire team together to save the day. The first time I heard the song, it was stuck in my head for days.

Now you might be thinking, this sounds nothing like the DC Comic characters known as the Teen Titans. You are correct. Teen Titans GO! is a less serious take on the famous characters, intended for a younger audience. Its existence enrages many fans of the original Teen Titans animated series, yet continues to be one of Cartoon Networks most watched series, with repeats of the series taking up a large portion of the networks schedule. A straight to DVD crossover series featuring the two series crossing over titled Teen Titans GO! Vs Teen Titans was released in 2019. Teen Titans GO! features the same voice actors as the original series and often pokes fun at itself, with many references to the previous series and the original animation style. It even got its own feature length film Teen Titans GO! To the Movies which was an extremely enjoyable fun movie.

In the premiere of The Night Begins to Shine 2: Youre The One, we once again see the Teen Titans transported to the realm after a long absence only to find the land in ruins with a new evil threat, Ultralak, behind the destruction. Ultralak suddenly appears and proclaims his intentions to destroy all music. Cyborg leads an attack on him and his forces. Ultralak deals a strong blow to Cyborg, taking him out. Robin, Starfire, Raven and Beast Boy retreat to a base held by resistance fighters. Ultralak quickly finds them and right before attacking, Cyborg, now having transferred his essence into the motorcycle which he rides in this realm, rescues the Titans.

The titans must now find the three musical stems of B.E.R.s lost song which they learn has been buried in the ground to hide them from Ultralak. B.E.R. are the craters of the song The Night Begins to Shine. A miner finds the first stem to the song and hands them over to the Sheriff right before the Titans arrive. The Titans arrive in town and during their attempt to rescue the stem, are captured by the Sheriff. Motorcycle Cyborg escapes and goes back to the miner, who he convinces to join and help rescue the stem and rest of the Titans. The team then has to get on board a train which is transporting the stem to Ultralak. With the help of the Titans, the miner manages to rescue the stem and capture the evil Sheriff. The miner then hands the Titans the stem and takes over as the new Sheriff.

The Titans now in possession of the first stem are pursued by Ultralak and his evil beasts. The team shakes them off their tail and attempts to find a signal on their tracker to find the rest of the song stems. They climb a hill and soon realize they are on top of a giant turtle who shares that he has been stuck there in toxic sludge which was dumped there by a factory. Motorcycle Cyborg tells the turtle he will rescue the creature. After an initial failed attempt, they decide to go shut down the factory which has been pumping the toxic sludge. To their dismay, they witness that the pollution is in fact destroyed songs. Ultralak arrives and tells the lead factory worker that the Titans must be stopped before they find the next song stem. The Titans take on the workers, who are all skeletons, win and release the songs which were intended to be destroyed, into the lake, reviving them and cleansing the entire lake. The turtle then gifts the Titans the second stem, leaving one final stem for the Titans to find.

The final signal on the tracker brings them to a wall with no apparent way in. They then realize the radio they have been using to find the signals is in fact the key to open the door. Once open, a portal is revealed and the Titans risk it all and enter it. They find themselves in a mostly empty void and see the stem hovering in the distance. In an homage to the classic film, Tron, light beams appear alongside the Titans. They soon realize they are in a game and must figure out the pattern and path to complete it, losing a life every time they fail. They make progress yet fail again. The team, after continuing to fail, feels defeated. With Motorcycle Cyborgs guidance, he realizes the key is in the rhythm of music and motivates the team to successfully complete the game with one life left and reach the final stem. The radio tracker then shows them that they must get to the summit of a mountain

Once they reach the summit of the mountain, they see the ancient ruins of a temple dedicated to each member of B.E.R. They summon the band by presenting the three stems to the statues. Ultralak then appears and the Titans each charge at him landing powerful blows to Ultralak. He fights them off and begins to pull the stems out of the statues which were summoning B.E.R. Ultralak forcefully merges the stems and reveals himself to be the previously unknown fourth member of B.E.R. who quit the band. On his own he channeled evil and betrayed everything the band stood for. Ultralak then destroys the merged stems robbing the vibrant colors of the entire word. Ultralak becomes even stronger and more powerful. Suddenly, a beam of light appears through the dark and B.E.R. appears telling Ultralak that music can never be destroyed. They absorb the destroyed stem orb and begin performing their lost song, pulling Cyborgs essence out of the motorcycle into a new form of himself, making him stronger and powerful enough to take on the supercharged Ultralak. As B.E.R. performs the song Youre The One, Cyborg carries Ultralak into outer space and they fight it out. Ultralak pins Cyborg against a meteor and begins to pull his essence out of his body. B.E.R. join and supercharge Cyborg. He transforms into a new fourth member and their music together generates a powerful blow to counter Ultralak, eventually overcoming him, destroying Ultralak. B.E.R. proclaims victory with Robin saying they can now go back home. Cyborg pronounces that they are in fact home already.

The Night Begins to Shine 2 was a fun and visually stunning Teen Titans Go! event. While a compelling reason to send the Titans back to the land of The Night Begins to Shine, it fails to reach the heights of its predecessor. I missed the elements of the Titans being outside of the dimension like they were in the first event, which helped break up the seriousness which was on full display in the sequel. The Tron themed part of the movie event was the most exciting and my favorite segment. While thrilling, vibrant and beautifully animated, the final battle feels rushed, and leaves little resolution to the ending, leaving me wanting more. I wouldnt be surprised to see a third take on The Night Begins to Shine and if they make one, I will certainly tune in to watch it!

Immediately following the end of the special, Cartoon Network announced a new Teen Titans GO! mini-series event would have its premiere in August. It will be called Where Exactly on the Globe is Carl Sanpedro, clearly a fun play on the classic Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego?!

This week Robbie and Ben are joined by Kevin once more for a different kind of episode. This week we pit the Justice League Vs the Avengers.

Its a question as old as comic books themselves. Who would win a fight against the two greatest teams the world of nerds has ever known. In order to facilitate the discussion the Ben stepped back and served as the intermediary of the debate. Robbie would take the Avengers and Kevin the Justice League. Prior to the show both Robbie and Kevin submitted a 7 member roster of former Avenger and Justice League members. Ben was in charged matching up the two rosters to form interesting duels and it was then on Robbie and Kevin to debate who would win each.

The match-ups werent as straight forward as you might think, with the first bout against the son of the Magneto, Quicksilver, and the Justice Leagues tech-infused Cyborg. Ben didnt make any decisions on who the winners were based on the arguments. Thats up to you, the listeners. Listen to the episode and decide for yourself who you think won the most matches. In the Justice League v Avengers, who would come out on top? If you leave us your reasoning, based on the episode or your own reasoning, we might even read it on one of our shows. Jose Aldo Is Worth $9 Million Today but Almost Quit Fighting to Save $2 – Sportscasting

While most professional fighters dont make Patrick Mahomes money, you can still build up a nice fortune in the octagon. Jose Aldo is proof of that reality; thanks in large to his UFC success, the Brazilian bantamweight is worth an estimated $9 million. He wasnt always incredibly wealthy, though.

While mixed martial arts have made Aldo rich, he almost stopped fighting because of one harsh reality: he was looking to save a few bucks.

These days, Jose Aldo is one of the top MMA fighters to ever step into the octagon. His success, however, isnt a recent phenomenon.

Aldo turned pro at age 17 and made a name for himself on the Brazilian MMA scene. He made his World Extreme Cagefighting debut in 2008; within a year, he claimed the featherweight title. After the UFC and WEC merged, he retained the belt and defended it seven times.

In December 2015, however, everything changed. Aldo faced Conor McGregor and was knocked out in 13 seconds; while he managed to reclaim the belt with a win over Frankie Edgar, the Brazilian hasnt been able to reclaim his lost form.

After defeating Edgar by unanimous decision in July 2016, Aldo lost two consecutive fights to Max Holloway. The Brazilian won his next two bouts before suffering another defeat at the hands of Alexander Volkanovski. A new weight class didnt change Aldos fortunes, either, as he dropped his bantamweight debut to Marlon Moraes.

While Jose Aldo has become rich and famous thanks to mixed martial arts, they werent his first love. The Brazilian initially dreamed of being a soccer star.

During his youth, however, Aldo found a new sport. AsGuilherme Cruz explained for MMAFighting.com, capoeira training proved to be a natural fit for the boys talents. There was one problem, though: classes cost money, and Aldos father wasnt making much as a bricklayer.

Aldo had to leave capoeira because he had to pay a 10 reais [about $1.85] fee, Marcio Pontes, a local jiu-jitsu teacher explained. Thats really cheap, but he didnt have that money at the time. He stopped playing capoeira and saw this opportunity to train jiu-jitsu, but he had no money to buy a gi either.

Pontes gave Aldo and his cousin, Andre Luiz, two spare gis, and they began training. Before long, Jose started winning tournaments. Those victories would pave the way for his future career.

RELATED: Curtis Blaydes Also Thinks UFC Fighters Should Make More Money

Growing up in Brazil, $2 was enough to force Jose Aldo to leave capoeira training behind. These days, however, money isnt a concern.

According to CelebrityNetWorth, the Brazilian has an estimated fortune of $9 million. While that number may pale in comparison to some of the sports biggest namesConor McGregor, for example, is worth an estimated $120 millionthats nothing to sneeze at, especially given Aldos past.

If today I am who I am and I fight the way I fight, Its thanks to all the adversities I encountered in life, Aldo explained, according to Elias CepedaofYahooSports. The way I lived my life is what made me strong. Thats what makes me a rounded person, with a good mind-set, able to go in there and win.

Doom Patrol Has a Weird Thing for Cop Shows, Too – Gizmodo

The title card for Steele & CliffImage: DC Universe

Its rare that you see any of Doom Patrols mixed bag of metahuman heroes fighting regular, street-level criminals, because their respective power sets tend to be more useful dealing with metaphysical, extradimensional-type threats like massive roaches and mice. Mostly, the Doom Patrols left the basic crooks to the Titans and, one imagines, the police, but when you think about it, you never really see the cops in this world, either.

Obviously, the universe that Doom Patrols set in has some sort of justice system independent of the Justice League itself that Cyborg dreams of one day joining, but it isnt all that clear what the cops relationships with superheroes are like exactly. Finger Patrol, delves into this a bit via Robotman of all people who, like Cyborg, is naturally inclined to go out and do what he can to protect the innocent.

But because Robotmans closer to the civilian side of things compared to Cyborg, his flights of fancy about heroism in Finger Patrol end up illustrating something interesting about how people in this world think about cops.

G/O Media may get a commission

After Robotman and Cyborg unsuccessfully try to convince Cyborgs father Silas Stone to upgrade Robotmans frame in order to restore some of his sensory perception, the two metal men initially resign themselves to return to the Doom Patrol manor before Cyborg decides to make a quick stop by his good friend Ronis apartment where make amends for standing her up on their last planned date. In this case making amends means getting hot and heavy with Roni while Cliff, who has no idea whats going on, sits in the car waiting for hours like the worlds most unnecessary third wheel.

As Cliff drifts off to sleep, though, his thoughts about being able to play hero like Cyborg and his curiosity about Niles Caulders experimental ideas about upgrading his Robotman body lead to him having a novel sort of fever dream in which he and Vic are smooth-talking, badass detectives starring in their own 70s crime drama Steele & Stone.

Cheesy as Cliffs dream is, it speaks to the reality that he, like everyone else in his world, presumably grew up with crime procedurals featuring stories valorizing cops for going undercover in ridiculous costumes in order to solve even more ridiculous crimes. Silly Steele & Stone is, its also reflective of where Cliffs been at, mentally, as hes considered just what all it is that he wants to do with his life.

As Cliff wakes up from his dream, Finger Patrol lives up to its name when he witnesses two random guys attempting to steal a car, and he accidentally cuts one of the mens fingers off (which he pockets!) while apprehending them. Much as Cliff might not want to admit it, part of him does legitimately want to play heroic good guy like Cyborg, and while Doom Patrol plays Steele & Stone as a joke, its likely that this sentiment of Cliffs is going to resurface before the season is over.

With the Weigh-Ins Complete, Here’s a Look at the Final UFC 251 Card – Sportscasting

Fight Island in Abu Dhabi is going to be a busy place over the next two weeks as some of the best UFC fighters on the planet will compete in four events in that span, beginning with UFC 251, which will take place on Saturday nightwell, at least here in the U.S.

The official date for UFC 251 is actually July 12 but seeing as there are no fans allowed inside the Flash Forum, local time in Abu Dhabi wasnt an issue so Dana White and company set everything up to run live during primetime hours in the States on the evening of July 11. The early prelims will actually start at 2:00 a.m. Gulf Standard Time with the main card beginning at 6:00 a.m. For those here in North America, thats 6:00 p.m. Eastern for the early prelims and 10 p.m. Eastern for the main card with the regular prelims in between. Yes, there will be a test later.

While that might be a little confusing, theres no confusing the fact that UFC 251 has a stacked card, headlined by huge title fights. So lets take a quick look at every single match on the card.

RELATED: UFC Featherweight Champ Releases Childrens Book to Show That Hes the Anti-Conor McGregor

One of the original co-main events for UFC 251 was scheduled to be Kamaru Usman putting his welterweight title on the line against Gilbert Burns. But after Burns and his coach, Greg Jones, tested positive for COVID-19, Jorge Masvidal was placed in the match, much to the delight of fans as hes had 48 career fights without ever receiving a UFC title match, the most in history.

The other co-main event will see UFC Featherweight Champion Alexander Volkanovski put his title on the line against the man he won it from, Max Holloway. This highly-anticipated rematch comes seven months after Volkanovski defeated Holloway via unanimous decision at UFC 245 last December.

The third title match on the card will see former featherweight champ Jose Aldo take on Petr Yan for the vacant UFC Bantamweight Championship.

Former champions Jessica Andrade and Rose Namajunas will compete in the womens strawweight division in what is essentially a number one contenders match to see who will next challenge Weili Zhang. The two first met at UFC 237 with Andrade coming out on top via second-round TKO. A womens flyweight showdown will see Amanda Ribas take on Paige VanZant, who may be fighting for the final time in UFC.

RELATED: A Look Back on When Jose Aldo Was Destroyed by Conor McGregor in 13 Seconds at UFC 194

A light heavyweight showdown between Volkan Oezdemir and Jiri Prochazka headlines the UFC 251 prelims. Prochazka is currently on a 10-fight winning streak and has only gone the distance one time in 30 career fights.

In the mens welterweight division, the bout between Elizeu Zaleski dos Santos and Muslim Salikhov certainly has the potential to steal the show as both possess amazing knockout power. Makwan Amirkhani and Danny Henry meet in the featherweight division and Leonard Santos takes on undefeated Roman Bogatov in the lightweight division.

RELATED: How to Watch UFC 251:Usmanvs.MasvidalFromFightIsland

The only heavyweight division matchup on the UFC 251 card takes place on the early prelims. Marcin Tybura was scheduled to take on Alexander Romanov but after Romanov tested positive for COVID-19, he was replaced by Maxim Grishin, who will be making his UFC debut.

Raulian Paiva was set to take on Zhalgas Zhumagulov in a mens flyweight division bout but Paiva failed to make weight, weighing in at 129 pounds, three pounds over the non-title limit. The fight is now expected to take place at catchweight, as is the match between Karol Rosa and Vanessa Melo after Melo came in five pounds too heavy.

A mens bantamweight division bout between Martin Day and Davey Grant rounds out the UFC 251 early prelims.

UFC 251 can be ordered on pay-per-view through ESPN+.

Echos new status as one of the Bad Batch provides some clues about what the new spin-off show might be like. In The Clone Wars, the Bad Batch clones experimental abilities (extraordinary strength, keen eyesight, unusually high intelligence, etc.) make them outcasts among the Republics mass-produced soldiers. Echo, formerly a regular clone, joined in part because he felt he would fit in better with the outliers after being forcefully enhanced with cybernetic parts by the Separatists. As the new man in the group, hes likely a good choice for a point of view character in the new series a clone who no longer fits in at a time when his fellow soldiers have been brainwashed by inhibitor chips into joining the Empire.

The post-Order 66 era has already been heavily explored, but The Bad Batch offers an interesting new angle. Books about Obi-Wan Kenobi and Kanan Jarrus show this era from the Jedi point of view. Star Wars Rebels, set 14 years after Revenge of the Sith, a team of freedom fighters in the years before the rise of the Rebel Alliance. The clone perspective is less well-known. Rebels and The Clone Wars showed how some clones removed the inhibitor chips that turned them into Jedi-killers, but the story of rogue clones in the immediate aftermath of Order 66 is new territory for Star Wars.

This post-Revenge of the Sith era begs some big questions. What is the Empires policy toward clones? We know the generation of clones active during Order 66 became Imperial stormtroopers, but were eventually phased out and replaced by human recruits. What about the clones opinions? In the penultimate episode of The Clone Wars, Captain Rex, a close ally of Anakin Skywalker and Ahsoka Tano, was one of the first clones to scrap his inhibitor chip (with Ahsokas help). He resented the Empire but also never directly fought it until Rebels.

But Echo and the Bad Batch in particular might have an even more unique perspective on the Empire because of their inherent outsider status. Its possible their genetic mutations allowed them to disobey their own inhibitor chips in the first place, making them painfully aware of the horrors of Order 66 from the start.

As fans learned in The Clone Wars, the clones have their own society and tragedies. Commissioned for war from birth, they are motivated by their brotherhood as clones and their belief in the competence and moral righteousness of their Jedi leaders. But the Bad Batch are disconnected from the politics of the Republic. While they very efficiently wage war in the name of the Grand Army of the Republic, they are pariahs within it. It might be easier for them to accept that the Republic was vulnerable to the forces that turned it into the Empire, both in terms of Emperor Palpatines use of the dark side of the Force and in terms of the political cracks in the system. The Bad Batch have no inherent love for the brotherhood of clones since it was never really a brotherhood for them.

Seek the nectar of spirituality – The Sunday Guardian

Just visit a place of natural beauty, any place where there are mountains, flowing rivers, tall, lush green trees, birds on the wing, small white clouds floating in the sky and the sun shining. In such a place, you will feel like exclaiming: How wonderful is nature! But nature is not just a wonderful world. It is rather an amazing garden of spirituality. Indeed, everything in nature gives you a taste of spirituality. For example, when you see a honey bee hovering over a flower, you suddenly realize that it has a lesson to impart, for every part of nature is like a flower for you. In each part resides the nectar of spirituality. Take out this spiritual nectar and you will be motivated to turn yourself into a spiritual personality.

It should be borne in mind that spirituality is not a state of ecstasy. Ecstasy is a state of bliss or a semi-conscious condition. But spirituality is different from this, being marked by a high level of acute intellectual awakening, rather than a semi-somnolent stateof mind.

In the age of science, it is possible to place spirituality within the framework of a mind-based discipline. Being a science just like other sciences, spirituality should be associated not with meditation but rather with contemplation. The domain of spiritual science encompasses the contemplation of the qualitative aspects of nature, so that within its scope, it is things of a spiritual nature which are brought to light.

For a honey bee, its whole world is a world of flowers. It concentrates on flowers, takes the nectar from them and returns to its hive. The same is true of an awakened mind.

For an awakened mind, the whole world is a world of spirituality. It extracts spiritual content from everything. Our world is like a garden of all good things, and spirituality enables the individual to live in and benefit from this garden.
