Remember the Strange Way the Eagles Played Their First Gig? – Taste of Country

The Eagles weren't even a separate group when they played their first gig together on July 12, 1971. The musicians who would go on to dominate popular music in the '70s and '80s performed together publicly for the first time in public as a backing group for superstar Linda Ronstadt and at a pretty unexpected venue.

Don Henley, GlennFrey, Bernie Leadon and Randy Meisner were all veterans of various groups in Southern California's burgeoning country-rock scene in the early '70s when they were picked to back Ronstadt in a new band in fact, that's why they were selected.

Henley had performed as a drummer in a group called Shiloh, which Kenny Rogersfirst discovered in Dallas and brought to Los Angeles to record, while Frey had worked in a duo called Longbranch Pennywhistle with J.D. Souther. Meisner had played in Rick Nelson's Stone Canyon Band, and Leadon had performed with the Flying Burrito Brothers prior to playing with Ronstadt, who hand-selected them to form a group of country-rock "all-stars" to back her on her Silk Purse Tour in 1971.

The new group made its debut backing Ronstadt during a performance at Disneyland on July 12, 1971, but the chemistry between the band members was so undeniably special that Henley and Frey soon approached Ronstadt to inform her of their intention to split off and form a new band of their own with those musicians, leaving her to once again hire an entirely new group.

Though the lineup was short-lived behind Ronstadt the Disneyland show was, in fact, their only show with her the sound of them playing together with her was immortalized on her self-titled third studio album, released in 1972. All four original Eagles appear on various tracks of that album, but they would waste no time making a mark of their own.

The Eagles released their self-titled debut album on June 1, 1972, and they were successful straight out of the gate, scoring hits with "Take It Easy" (which Frey co-wrote with his friend and then-neighbor, Jackson Browne), "Witchy Woman" and "Peaceful, Easy Feeling." The Eagles reached No. 22 on Billboard's US Pop Albums chart and was certified Platinum after selling more than a million copies, setting the band on a course to become one of the most successful in rock music history.

The Fight Against COVID-19 Is the Moment Robots Have Been Waiting For – Propmodo

Whether theyre falling into fountains, knocking down toddlers, or losing a fight against an unruly drunk, when robots in office spaces make headlines, its often because of a comical mishap. But, our troubled robotic operating buddies may have finally found their moment. In the time of COVID, when limiting human interaction in offices and public spaces is paramount, landlords and property managers are taking another look at what robots can do. A tidal wave of robots aimed at coronavirus prevention is sweeping through the PropTech industry.

The coronavirus has created a need for robots because they can reduce direct contact between people, Mira Robotics CEO Ken Matsui told Reuters. The Tokyo-based startup has found a new purpose for its Ugo robot: ultraviolet (UV) disinfection. The robot uses UV hand attachments mounted on adjustable arms to roll around via remote control, using the UV light to kill viruses on door handles, toilets, and other surfaces.

Russia-based Promobot has developed its own robot, designed to screen people and take their temperatures before they enter a building. Promobots latest version, dubbed Thermocontrol, also questions people about symptoms, gives advice about avoiding the virus, and hands out facemasks. Silicon Valley-based Knightscope has been pushing free updates to its robots in the field, which now promote COVID prevention by broadcasting public safety and social distancing reminders to those within ear shot. The list of new or improved robots aimed at fighting the virus goes on and on.

What sets the robots apart is their efficacy. UV robots in particular have been proven to be faster and more effective than their human counterparts. Many have been clinically tested, achieving a 99.99% level of disinfection in half the time it takes a human worker. Most importantly, the robots never stop and are immune to the virus, so they wont catch it or spread it.

After decades of missing the mark, social robots have found something they can do better than their human counterparts. Thats why facility managers are finally taking notice. Chinese hospitals have recently ordered more than 2,000 UV robots, and the units now operate in more than 40 countries throughout Asia, Europe, and the U.S. Sales of Neo, a floor-cleaning robot made by Canadian startup Avidbots, were already doubling on an annual basis before the coronavirus hitbut now sales have doubled again, the companys CEO Faizan Sheikh told Fortune. San Antonio-based Xenex, maker of a disinfecting robot known as LightStrike that uses technology developed by John Hopkins University, has been running its manufacturing facility 24/7 to keep up with skyrocketing demand, up 600 percent.

Robotic companies are in an all-out race to seize the moment, and investor money is pouring into the industry. There has never been an appetite for automation quite like the current moment. Cleaning robots are already being rolled out in some of the nations most prolific stores, like Kroger and Walmart, which just placed another order for 1,500 more Brain cleaning robots. All that activity means a robot could be coming to your office building soon.

What were seeing in the market in general now is a lot of pull from places like hotels, from airports, airlines, schools, government office buildings, private office buildings, doctors offices, Xenex CEO Morris Miller told Spectrum News. While payment plans vary, from rentals to outright ownership, each robot has an immense cost. Xenexs LightStrike robots cost around $100,000. On the lower end, Mira Robotics Ugo bot can be rented for $1,000 a month.

Knightscopes patrol and surveillance bots charge by the hour, coming in at around $122,000 a year. While those costs may have been prohibitive in the past, facility managers and landlords are starting to see the cost-benefit analysis differently. To be competitive, historically commercial robots are priced largely on who they replace, Medhat Moussa, Robotic Engineering Professor at Canadas University of Guelph, explained. Now people responsible for public spaces like office buildings are starting to see robots as an insurance policy, rather than a labor cost.

Whats the cost of a COVID outbreak? Its astronomical, Moussa said. Thats the insurance policy cost robotics can help with. If you understand these robots can prevent disease and offer early detection, you see lots of funding. If one of these bots prevents an outbreak or catches it early, it can be mitigated. If offices cant control the virus, the losses are massive.

Getting workers back into the office was always going to be a struggle. Amid a growing second-wave of the coronavirus, that task has only become more difficult. Half of American professionals are reluctant to go back to the office, according to a survey by Korn Ferry conducted in early June. When asked what precautions they want to see employers take as offices reopen, temperature checks, regular and documented deep cleanings and enforced social distancing were among the top responses in a Citrix survey of more than two thousand American office workers.

Crises shift perceptions on what is possible regarding investment and transformative action on the part of both private and government actors. By the time the COVID-19 pandemic has passed, robots will be mainstreamed across a range of applications and markets, Rian Whitton, senior analyst at ABI Research, said in a release. Automating disinfection is a key part of maintaining health and safety and could be one of the major bright spots in the response to COVID-19.

Robots can help offices reopen safely. Disinfection, deep cleaning, surveillance, temperature checks, and social distancing enforcement can all be automated in office buildings to keep employees safer. In the world of industrial real estate, robots are ubiquitous. From assembly lines to warehouses, theyve become essential. As the world comes together to fight against the coronavirus, they may become just as essential in our office buildings. Social robots are finally evolving from accident-prone machines into the helpers we dreamed they could be.

Hi-tech gyms trading dumbbells and treadmills for AI and robotics – The Denver Channel

LAKE ZURICH, Ill. -- The trade group representing the $94 billion health club industry in crisis is calling on Congress for federal relief. In the face of the pandemic, some major chains like 24 Hour Fitness and Golds Gym have already filed for bankruptcy. But others are hoping technology and personalized training could help them save brick and mortar gyms.

Last year, I had one knee replaced. I'm scheduled to have the other one this fall, said 69-year-old Larry Fulhorst.

He hadnt been to a gym in 40 years, but he needed to work on building strength in his legs.

A Facebook post led him to a hi-tech fitness studio promising results without needing to spend hours sweating away in a crowded gym.

This sounds too good to be true 20 minutes twice a week," said Fulhorst.

The Exercise Coach is a smart fitness studio that trades dumbbells and treadmills for artificial intelligence and robotics. Technology diagnoses strengths and weaknesses in real time.

We use sensors to actually get a feel for the exact muscular makeup and abilities of an individual and then we use that that personal data to generate appropriate strength training, explained Bryan Cygan, the CEO and founder of The Exercise Coach.

The programs are geared primarily toward people who havent worked out in years or are starting to exercise for the first time.

Generally, people in their 40, 50s, 60s and even beyond who want real results from a workout but don't want to spend a lot of time exercising, said Cygan.

With many big box gyms filing for bankruptcy as gym goers are weary about coronavirus, smart fitness studios are pivoting in.

Compressed workouts, personal trainers and no crowds are key.

It works because our workout isn't an hour long of sweaty cardio. You can actually wear a mask, breathe comfortably and get all the benefits of exercise through strength training, said Cygan.

Its something that appeals to people who are in a particularly vulnerable age group when it comes to COVID-19 like Larry Fulhorst.

You look at a facility this big it's no problem staying six feet away from somebody everybody's wearing a mask, said Fulhorst.

It seems to be working for Exercise Coach. Theyve expanded to 90 locations in 27 states and are back operating at 90% capacity.

9 military robots that are totally terrifying and oddly adorable – Yahoo! Voices

The military has always been at the cutting edge of technology, so it should come as no surprise that the most advanced robots in the world are being built with military applications in mind. While the thought of autonomous machines carrying heavy armaments might make people a bit nervous, they have the potential to dramatically reduce loss of life, allowing soldiers to safely scout locations or breach enemy locations. Many of them are even designed for support purposes, rather than eliminating threats.

While many military projects from around the world are naturally shrouded in secrecy, some of them see the light of day, including robotic projects. Here are some of the coolest robots weve seen with military applications, from tiny spy robots to unmanned battle tanks.

Dont let its small size fool you. The MAARS (Modular Advanced Armed Robotic System) fits a lot of firepower into its diminutive frame. Its modular design allows its controllers to outfit it with a variety of armaments, ranging from non lethal lasers (designed to blind foes) to tear gas and even a grenade launcher. The MAARS is a follow-up to an earlier model of robot called SWORDS, which saw deployment in Iraq a few years ago.

What a cute robot! you might say, as you see the DOGO round a corner. The small machine, roaming around on two treads, could be mistaken for a toy at least, until it whips out its Glock. Yes, the DOGO houses within its body not only a camera, allowing for remote reconnaissance, but also a 9-millimeter pistol. A promotional video from manufacturer General Robotics shows off the DOGO in a scenario like something out of a Tom Clancy story, as a special forces team sends the DOGO into a hostage situation, taking out one of the kidnappers remotely.

When designing a robot for military use, creating a heavily-armed assault machine is an obvious route to take. However, any military force has needs beyond shooting bad guys, and there are quite a few robots in development with an eye toward support functions. Take the SAFFiR (Shipboard Autonomous Firefighting Robot), for example. The creation of Virginia Tech engineering students, the SAFFiR is designed to extinguish fires that break out on Naval ships. Although the machine is still in development, it will hopefully be able to react quickly to fires and resist much higher temperatures than the human body, thus keeping sailors out of danger.

Not every military robot needs to come equipped with guns. Reconnaissance is a vital part of military operations, and the small, spherical Guardbot is built with that purpose in mind. Originally designed for missions to Mars, the Guardbot is equipped with powerful cameras and can navigate various adverse environments, including those prone to snow, sand, and even water.

Story continues

Designed to assist the U.S. Marine Corps in various operations, the Gladiator Tactical Unmanned Ground Vehicle looks like a small tank, and can be outfitted with various modular tools and armaments depending on what the situation calls for. Although ittops out at 10 miles per hour, the Gladiator trades speed for toughness; it has an armored hull, and users can mount machine guns and grenade launchers directly onto its body.

Allegedly built by two brothers, according to a story by the Baghdad Post, this robot is an unmanned vehicle designed to combat ISIS forces. Footage of the machine shows it sporting heavy weaponry and rolling around the Iraqi desert on four large wheels. Given the typical hazards soldiers face when combating ISIS IEDs, ambushes, etc. machines like the Alrobot may be crucial in minimizing risks to human soldiers.

The Chinese-developed Anbot is an armed police robot designed by the countrys National Defense University. Capable of reaching max speeds of 11 mph, the machine is intended to patrol areas and, in the case of danger, can deploy an electrically charged riot control tool. Those worried about the Anbots resemblance to a Dalek, take heart; no blue police boxes have yet been seen in its vicinity.

Developed by Harvards Microbiotics Laboratory, this tiny robot is capable of hovering, although it seems to require an attached power cable for the time being. Theoretically, the RoboBee could represent an important step toward insectoid robots capable of transmitting audio or video, which would allow military intelligence to truly be a fly on the wall in important meetings. Of course, it could also help with non-military operations; its creators highlight the Robobees potential for crop pollination.

Another model of flying surveillance robot, the Black Hornet is made by Prox Dynamics, and looks like a miniature helicopter. The machine contains cameras that can stream live video to the user, allowing them to scout areas from a safe distance. Small, quiet, and helpful on the battlefield, the Black Hornet is like a Mission Impossible gadget in real life. The robothas already seen its share of action, too.Speaking with UAS Vision, British Major Adam Foden said that the military has already begun deploying the Black Hornet insidecompoundsin an effort to clear routes through enemy-held spaces. Its worked well thus far, and frequently transmits clear and concise images back to British forces.

Singapore scientists invent a robotic system with AI-driven skin and vision sensors – BSA bureau

National University of Singapore (NUS) researchers integrated Intel Neuromorphic Computing to construct robots that Feel to use in healthcare, logistics and food manufacturing industry

Two researchers from the National University of Singapore (NUS) who are members of theIntel Neuromorphic Research Community (INRC) presentednew findings demonstrating the promise of event-based vision and touch sensing in combinationwith Intels neuromorphic processing for robotics. The work highlights how bringing a sense of touch to robotics can significantly improve capabilities and functionality compared to todays visual-only systems and how neuromorphic processors can outperform traditional architectures in processing such sensory data.

The human sense of touch is sensitive enough to feel the difference between surfaces that differ by just a single layer of molecules, yet most of todays robots operate solely on visual processing. Researchers at NUS hope to change this using their recently developedartificial skin, which according to their research can detect touch more than 1,000 times faster than the human sensory nervous system and identify the shape, texture and hardness of objects 10 times faster than the blink of an eye.Enabling a human-like sense of touch in robotics could significantly improve current functionality and even lead to new use cases.

Tapping onIntels Loihi neuromorphic chip, the team shows how bringing a sense of touch to robotics can significantly improve capabilities and functionality compared to todays visual-only systems.

To break new ground in robotic perception, the NUS team began exploring the potential of neuromorphic technology to process sensory data from the artificial skin using Intels Loihi neuromorphic research chip.In their initial experiment, the researchers used a robotic hand-fitted with the artificial skin to read Braille, passing the tactile data to Loihi through the cloud to convert the micro bumps felt by the hand into a semantic meaning. Loihi achieved over92% accuracy in classifying the Braille letterswhile using 20 times less power than a standard Von Neumann processor.

The team has implemented a chip that can draw accurate conclusions based on the skins sensory data in real-time, while operating at a power level efficient enough to be deployed directly inside the robot. Thus, this smart robot hasan ultra-fast artificial skin sensor.

"Unique demonstration of an AI skin system with neuromorphic chips such as the Intel Loihi provides anartificial brain that can ultimately achieve perception and learning which is a major step forward towards power-efficiency and scalability.said assistant professor Benjamin Tee from the NUS Department of Materials Science and Engineering and NUS Institute for Health Innovation & Technology.

Building on this work, the NUS team has successfully tasked a robot to classify various opaque containers holding differing amounts of liquid using sensory inputs from the artificial skin and an event-based camera.

Earlier this year, researchers from Intel Labs and Cornell University have jointly published ajoint research paperinNature Machine Intelligence, discussing the ability of Intels neuromorphic research chip,Loihi, to learn and recognize hazardous chemicals in the presence of significant noise and occlusion.

Monument to Victims of Hurricane Dorian Unveiled in Grand Bahama – caribbeannationalweekly.com

NASSAU, Bahamas The government of The Bahamas has unveiled a monument that will serve as a memorial to the lives lost during Hurricane Dorian in September 2019.

Speaking at the unveiling ceremony earlier this week, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, Peter Turnquest said the pain caused by the loss of lives during Hurricane Dorian remains personal for him.

Many who died were my friends, said Turnquest.

Some who are still missing, I know personally. Ive visited and shared with those persons, in homes now shattered and destroyed. Monuments like this are erected to help ensure that we never forget what happened September 1st, 2019.

The monument is located at the Jack Hayward Bridge, which leads to East Grand Bahama, to serve as a memorial to the lives lost in East Grand Bahama.

On behalf of the government, I commend the Grand Bahama Port Authority and its partners for this kind gesture, said Turnquest.

This occasion pays tribute to those who died as a result of Hurricane Dorian. It reminds us not only of the loss, but also of the tremendous effort and courage the surviving families and friends have had to bear, as they carry on and rebuild their lives and properties.

We want them to know that they have not been forgotten. Also, their strength is symbolized by this monument. This monument will highlight our resilience and determined drive to carry on for those who did not make it.

Deputy Prime Minister noted that since the passing of the historic hurricane, the Government of the Bahamas has taken measures and steps and learned lessons from the experience to strengthen institutions in preparation for future storms, which the country must assume will come.

He noted that there has been the legislation of mandatory evacuations, hardening of the islands sea defenses with the completion of the Smiths Point Seawall and the Fishing Hole Causeway, with more such investments to come in the future in West and East Grand Bahama.

He added that building codes that help to protect people and property during storms are being drafted; NEMA has been strengthened in its leadership and management of disaster preparation and response; the Disaster Reconstruction Authority has been formed and is presently assisting Bahamians with rebuilding efforts.

Shelters that have been damaged during Hurricane Dorian are being repaired and new ones identified, said Minister Turnquest. The Rand Memorial Hospital is being completed renovated and renewed to almost a new facility, with expanded bed capacity, in preparation for a new facility that will eventually be built as things return to normal.

The government understands that there is no quick fix to do it right, but we understand the urgency.

The unveiling of this monument cements the fact that our recovery demands a unified approach. We are in this together and we will get through this together.

The Deputy Prime Minister urged the Grand Bahama Port Authority and its partners to redouble their efforts in the cleanup of Grand Bahama, noting that there are still a number of areas that remain filled with debris, which is hampering the rebuilding efforts. He said that the completion of the cleanup project will go a long way towards the recovery of the island of Grand Bahama.

He also pointed to the urgent need for a new airport in Grand Bahama. He noted that the temporary facility is adequate, but not ideal.

He added that the monument will not just represent the lives lost during Hurricane Dorian, but will also serve as a tribute to all of the frontline workers, First Responders and even private citizens who became heroes, having used jet skis, boats and other means to save the lives of many Grand Bahamians during Dorian.

This Memorial is for you too, as we celebrate and remember your courageous acts of kindness. Yet, it is another forceful reminder that we are indeed a village and together we cannot and must not fear.

While this Memorial is located here in Grand Bahama, let me say to the people in Abaco that it is difficult and near impossible not to link Abaco to this moment. The Grand Bahama and Abaco ties, particularly in East Grand Bahama are strong.

Haitian nationals caught smuggling into the United States headed to Inagua – EyeWitness News

NASSAU, BAHAMAS A group of twenty-three Haitian migrants, who were intercepted by the United States Coast Guard earlier this week, will be sent to Inagua until they can be repatriated.

Royal Bahamas Defence Force Commander Raymond King confirmed to Eyewitness News that an RBDF vessel will meet the Coast Guard at a location off Grand Bahama or the coast of Bimini to receive the migrants, who were detained about two days ago.

He noted plans were still in the preliminary stages; however, those migrants will then be transported to Inagua by the RBDF and detained at its maritime facility.

King said he could not confirm the extent of COVID-19 testing performed by the Coast Guard but noted they were confident that none of the migrants have displayed any signs of the virus.

He stressed there will be no contact with the wider community, adding efforts were being made to time the transport to ensure that a repatriation flight is ready upon the vessels landing in Inagua or shortly thereafter.

King said: It was about a day ago the Coast Guard intercepted a vessel attempting to enter Florida with some 23 Haitian nationals on board. The vessel was intercepted, the persons were detained and they did some preliminary COVID-19 checks.

According to our sea rider agreement any migrants caught being smuggled across from say Bimini, West End, Grand Bahama, and they are on a Bahamian registered vessel, we are obligated to receive those migrants from the United States.

They will be returned to us and the vessel has I think two children on board.

He continued: The intent is for us to rendezvous with the Coast Guard vessel accept those migrants and the intent is to transport them to Matthew Town where they will be housed at the maritime facility there. And it is hoped that the Department of Immigration would have already made arrangements because I know some additional officers would have been flown in to Inagua today.

Once the vessel arrives, hopefully we time it where the aircraft arrives and its just a transfer from the defence force boat or the maritime facility where they will be held under defence force guidance until we transport them to the airport, to the aircraft and they are repatriated.

Videos of immigration officers landing in Inagua today have spiked fears the island could be exposed to potential cases of COVID-19. There has not been a confirmed case on Inagua to date.

King said: We can ease the concerns of residents because those migrants will be brought in on the defence force vessel and they will be transferred directly to the maritime facility right there at the base end of Great Inagua, where they will be detained under defense force care until the next movement would be straight to the airport and they are repatriated.

King did not confirm the migrants were intercepted onboard a Bahamian-registered vessel, but noted there is an existing agreement that governs this process.

He added: Knowing what the agreement states, that we would be obligated to receive these persons, they would have had to be on some platform that links them to The Bahamas.

Time to find radical solutions – Bahamas Tribune

EDITOR, The Tribune

In June The international Monetary Fund projected that the world economy will contract by 4.9%. Two thirds of the worlds governments borrowed US $11 trillion in June alone. The IMF forecast 12 trillion in loss to the global economy in 2020 and 2021 due to the pandemic. The world is beginning to reopen but the rate of infection is increasing in the US, Brazil and India which collectively produce over 20% of global GDP. A major concern is the US which accounts for 26% of infections worldwide according to Johns Hopkins University. The US is the number one consumer nation, so if the US is stumbling economically because of COVID-19, the world economy suffers. The majority of remittance and tourists for the Bahamas comes from the US, the Bahamas number one trading partner.

The Bahamas economic needs have increased since COVID-19 pandemic because of increased medical costs, increased unemployment relief and other government assistance and decrease in government revenue. The opening of the tourist industry in a measured way is a start but more than that is required. The IMF forecast the Bahamass economy will contract by 8.3% and the consumer price index will be 2.4%. This spells hard times for many Bahamians who have less income and higher prices. The Bahamas has never had IMF deals but both the people and the government are skilled at dealing with economic hardship. This time it is different. The global downturn is severe and unusual so the Bahamas will have to make a lot more internal adjustments with less international assistance.

The Bahamas needs to set up a committee that is innovative with radical solutions. There needs to be systemic changes. If the Bahamas treats this situation like all the other economic recessions, the results will be dire. Never in the history of the world has the world been so heavily indebted and experienced a pandemic simultaneously.

BBF on senior men’s national basketball team – Bahamas Tribune

By RENALDO DORSETT

Tribune Sports Reporter

rdorsett@tribunemedia.net

THE Bahamas Basketball Federations senior mens national basketball team programme continues its development despite uncertainty of the FIBA AmeriCup qualification due to COVID-19.

The BBF has partnered with Spectrum Pain Management and Sports Medicine Clinic to treat team members moving forward.

Spectrum will offer its services to national team members free of charge.

We had been looking to partner with an organisation for about two years and in our discussions, we decided to provide care free of charge for the athletes, said Dr Sy Pierre, anesthesia and pain medicine specialist. If one of the players had a torn ACL or meniscus tear that wasnt serious enough to require surgery, but may need some interventional procedure where we can assist healing and enhance healing over a short period of time, we can help to get them back on the court as soon as possible and that is what interventional pain management and sports medicine is about at this point.

Players will also benefit from Spectrums services as the national team travels throughout the world to various tournaments.

We have a group of board certified specialists and we have agreed to travel with the team so that if the teams needs specialist care for their injuries abroad, we can provide that. If youre in a place where English isnt your first language and you have a player thats injured it may be very difficult to explain to the physician what is going on so I think this might be a good thing for them, Pierre said, Its a great thing for us, a great thing for the federation, great thing for the Bahamas and we are so happy to be a part of this organisation to help.

BBF President, Mario Bowleg said the latest partnership falls in line with the federations mandate to increase profile of the national team programme.

As we move the fed to the next level we also believe that how we treat our athletes on and off the court is also important for us to have them play at the highest level possible, he said.

The MNT is set to continue their 2021 FIBA AmeriCup qualification this fall, however those plans are uncertain amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

In their last appearance, The Bahamas won 76 - 59 win over Mexico in February at the Atlantis Resort to even the series between the two teams at 1-1. The Bahamas is currently second in Group D at 1-1 with the advantage over Mexico on point differential. The USA leads the Group at 2-0 while Puerto Rico is 0-2. The Bahamas will continue play in Group D on November 27 against the United States in game one of the second window.

Bowleg said the federation will be notified at the end of the month on the path moving forward for the qualifiers.

Our senior men are scheduled to play in November in Washington against the United States and also against Puerto Rico on the road in Puerto Rico. We will get an update on July 31st whether those games will still be played in November or will be pushed back to February. Also scheduled in February are the home games against the United States and Puerto Rico, Bowleg said, If the away games are pushed back due to the pandemic, then I guess our home games will be pushed back to June, which is more beneficial for us. We will then have our NBA players home and I think that will be something of great interest to the public, to have Buddy [Hield] and [Deandre] Ayton at home playing against the likes of the US and Puerto Rico.

With basketball across the globe in flux, Bowleg said the FIBA schedule will be ratified as the organisation communicates with the various leagues.

Everything is wait and see. Most of the guys are home now, working out everyday looking at the possibility of going back to their professional leagues and programmes and understanding that in itself is going to have an effect on us. Those dates for when those seasons will start will be hindered by them not completing their seasons this year, he said, Just like we are trying to get our local leagues back, the NBA might have the same problem where they are trying to finish their season, but might have to start later in the next season which will affect the decision by FIBA also. FIBA will communicate with all of the leagues that they govern throughout the world and ensure that those dates come somewhere down the line.

At the local level, the BBF has continued its activity through several initiatives despite the restrictions of the pandemic.

One of the five pillars the federation had when they came into office is that we wanted to ensure that we continue re-certifying our coaches and our officials. During the pandemic, although we didnt have physical meetings among the peers, we had several virtual clinics held in the CBC that were conducted by our national instructor, Freddie Brown. Also in the FIBA Americas, where the Bahamas would have had various table officials certified. Physical clinics will hopefully commence in September to ensure that those islands, coaches , officials ndn coaches improve their skills to improve the product of basketball in the country, Bowleg said, We are excited to officially implement 3x3 basketball in the country. A committee was made up to represent the implementation of this version of the game in the country. So we are continuing to do the work to develop the game of basketball in the country.

The Bahamas prepares to reopen to international travel July 1 – St. Lucia News Online

(PRESS RELEASE) The Bahamas Ministry of Tourism & Aviation is preparing for Phase 2 of the Tourism Readiness and Recovery Plan, which will begin on Wednesday, July 1, and allow for the resumption of international travel to The Bahamas.

Policies and procedures for all travellers visiting The Bahamas beginning July 1 are as follows:

Plans continue to evolve in response to COVID-19 trends, and so additional guidance will be communicated as details are available.

Due to the recent increase of COVID-19 cases in the U.S., and in an abundance of caution for the health and safety of both travellers and residents, all incoming visitors must present a COVID-19 RT-PCR negative (swab) test upon arrival. Those arriving in The Bahamas between July 1 and July 7 must present results no more than 10 days old. Those arriving in The Bahamas after July 7 must present results no more than seven days old. Select individuals will not be required to provide a test:

o Children under the age of two

o Children between the ages of 3-10, provided their state or county of residence does not administer tests for children under that age. Parents or guardians must provide proof of testing restrictions upon arrival.

o Private pilots who do not deplane

o Bahamian citizens, residents, and homeowners who are returning to The Bahamas from English-speaking CARICOM countries

o Bahamian citizens and legal residents who are returning to The Bahamas from countries where they cannot obtain a COVID-19 RT-PCR (swab) test. Proof of their inability to receive a test must be presented upon arrival and traveller will be required to quarantine for 14 days.

Quarantine time may be reduced if the traveller opts to take a test at their own expense and receives a negative result.

o Bahamian citizens and legal residents who have been out of The Bahamas for less than 72 hours; however they will be required to quarantine for 14 days.

Quarantine time may be reduced if the traveller opts to take a COVID-19 RT-PCR (swab) test, at their own expense, and receives a negative result.

All travellers will be required to complete an electronic health visa prior to departure at travel.gov.bs. Each traveller will need to upload their test results and provide contact information that is crucial for contact tracing purposes. An automated response will be provided upon completion, and it is essential that travellers present proof of confirmation upon arrival in their destination.

No quarantine will be required upon arrival, however, travellers who show symptoms of COVID-19 may be transferred to an area away from other passengers for further testing and evaluation.

At airports and seaports, healthcare personnel will conduct temperature screenings for all incoming visitors. Travellers will be required to wear a face mask in any situation where it is necessary to enforce physical distancing guidelines, such as when entering and transiting air and sea terminals, while navigating security and customs screenings, and at baggage claim.

o New fines and penalties for all persons, including Bahamian residents and visitors, have been established for those not wearing face masks in areas where it is required.

As part of Phase 2, hotels and vacation rentals, including Airbnb and HomeAway, will open to guests. Domestic and international airlines are permitted to resume service, and many are beginning to announce plans for their return to The Bahamas:

Southwest will resume daily service between Baltimore and Nassau on July 1

JetBlue will resume daily service between New York (JFK) and Nassau as well as Fort Lauderdale and Nassau on July 2

Delta Airlines will be resuming its twice daily Atlanta to Nassau service July 2

United Airlines announced its daily Houston to Nassau and Newark to Nassau service will resume July 6 while Saturday-only Denver to Nassau service will resume July 11

American Airlines will resume daily flights between Charlotte and Nassau; Miami and Exuma; Miami and Eleuthera and twice-daily flights between Miami and Nassau on July 7

Additional airlift resumptions are expected to be announced in the coming weeks. Travellers should check with airlines directly for details on the recommencement of service and any protocols for travel.

This July 1, tourism re-entry builds on and supports existing government rules and regulations, which already allows for the resumption of travel for international boaters, yachters, and those traveling on private aviation as well as inter-island domestic travel for Bahamian citizens and residents.

Phase 3, beginning July 13, allows for the reopening of attractions, excursions, and tours.

Phase 4, beginning July 27, allows for vendors (including straw vendors) and jet ski operators to resume operations.

Once on the island, travellers should expect to follow The Bahamas Healthy Traveler Campaign that encourages both visitors and residents to continue practicing social distancing measures, regularly wash hands or use hand sanitizers, and pack appropriate PPE such as face masks, just as they would their swimsuits and sunscreen.

A Certification Agency has been established representing a collaboration between the Ministry of Tourism, Ministry of Health, and other regulatory agencies to enforce a Clean & Pristine certification program across the islands. All tourism-related, customer-facing entities in The Bahamas must verify they have in place and are adhering to the government-approved health and safety guidelines to receive Clean & Pristine certification.

Adequate signage outlining policies will be clearly displayed at all locations helping to guide staff and visitors. Travellers are encouraged to visit direct business websites prior to booking or traveling to ensure they are aware and comfortable with the policies they will need to abide by. Additional details about on-island protocols can be found at http://www.bahamas.com/travelupdates.

The reopening of borders will continue to be monitored and guided by The Bahamas government and health officials. Reopening dates are subject to change based on COVID-19 trends, if there is a deterioration in improvement or if government and health organizations deem these phases unsafe for residents or visitors.

The Bahamas Ministry of Tourism & Aviation believes it is an absolute baseline requirement for consumers to have a comfort level that The Bahamas is a safe and healthy destination to visit, and the ultimate goal is for that to remain the case.

Africa Needs The Space Industry To Go Forward – Space in Africa

The African continent is bound to become increasingly more dependent on the space industry for job creation, poverty alleviation and sustainable resource management. These were some of the findings in a paper recently published by an expert in the field of Earth Observation and Geo-Information Sciences.

The paper titled The status of Earth Observation (EO) & Geo-Information Sciences in Africa trends and challenges was published in the journal of Geospatial Information Science, by Prof Tsehaie Woldai in February this year. Woldai is a Visiting Professor at the School of Geosciences, University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa.

In his research, he found that up to end of last year 28 of the 54 African countries were already engaged in the Earth Observation and Geo-Information Sciences through 90 academic institutions, 17 national scientific associations, 53 national space agencies, 10 satellite receiving and tracking stations and few regional technical laboratories. While the industry currently provides employment to some 15 000 people on the African continent, Woldai expects this number to exceed 100000 by the year 2025.

The growing dependence of the continent on the satellite industry is also clear from the fact that by the end of last year 11 African countries have already launched 36 satellites together into orbit while another five are expected by the first quarter of 2021 plus another five by 2025 thus amounting to 46 satellites, a total not foreseen ten years ago.

Read: List of African Satellites

The reason for Prof Woldais optimism is that this industry can without being trapped by the continents poor infrastructure address some of its most pressing problems cost-effectively. Africa faces huge challenges in the domain of environmental protection and management, water resources, food security, mining and forest management, marine protection, urban and regional planning, transportation and disaster risk reduction.

Africas agricultural sector unquestionably has vast potential for growth if taken into account that the continent harbours 60% of the worlds available arable land but generates only 10% of global agricultural output. At present, its agriculture provides a livelihood to 70% of the African population. A well-managed agricultural sector would clearly be of great benefit to this continent.

Being an academic Woldai believes that harnessing the power of the academic institutions to reduce poverty is not an ideological aspiration but an empirically demonstrable fact. In his opinion universities have proved to be the only sustainable institutions in Africa and being the national pride of every country they have time and again withstood upheavals across the continent. Applied research is also one of their core businesses, at least in Africa.

He, therefore, is optimistic about the future of the growth and application of Earth Observation and Geo-Information Sciences across the continent provided there is good co-operation between the public sector (government ministries and departments); academic institutions (universities/colleges/national or regional centres); space agencies; and private sector companies. His success recipe for this sector is based on the following:

His optimism is further bolstered by the fact that space-based technology is now an essential tool for decision making in many African countries. Also, the technology is extensively used by Government Ministries/Departments in monitoring climate-related changes, agriculture, desertification, flood hazards, and soil erosion, as well as, risk assessment, groundwater exploration and transportation services. Using freely available or own space-based data (optical, radar and hyperspectral), they have managed to save time and costs to acquire valuable baseline information and update their resource maps. Besides, the increased affordability of personal computers, micro-electronic equipment and ever-improving telecommunication services give greater access to the internet in many parts of Africa.

Read: By 2024, More Than 19 African Countries Would Have Launched Satellite Into Space

Efforts to build capacities for managing EO/RS and geo-information in Africa span more than three decades. Traditionally, much of the capacity building had been at regional centres (such as AFRIGIST formerly RECTAS in Nigeria, the defunct Regional Remote Sensing Center in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso and RCMRD in Kenya) or abroad, by way of training few professionals, mainly from the surveyor-general departments or universities and equipping these organizations in map-making and related activities. Today African Universities contribute to societal capacity by functioning as nodes in a global network of knowledge. The majority of them provide dedicated geomatic, remote sensing and geoinformation science education and training. While 11% of the universities and colleges are known to offer three to seven day GIS courses to undergraduates; around 23% have degrees and research programs leading to BSc, MSc, and PhDs.

The creation of new companies over the last few years and their development clearly shows that the African private sector companies are steadily growing in 28 of the 54 countries of Africa. Encouraged by the moderate success booked in the 2016 African Private Sector Survey questionnaires another one was conducted in 2019. The number of people employed by 2019 increased by 66% (from 2719 in 2016 to 4109). In terms of revenues, all responding companies performed in a range from $500k $ 5 million/year. Some companies from Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, and South Africa have taken the opportunity created since the 2016 report to open subsidiary companies in other East and West African countries.

Numerous networks which facilitate the exchange of information and promotion of excellence in the field have also come into being all over Africa. Some with a Pan-African character include the African Association of Remote Sensing of the Environment (AARSE); AfriGEOSS (part of the Global Earth Observation System of Systems GEOSS); the Environmental Information Systems Africa (EIS-AFRICA); and the University Network for Disaster Risk Reduction in Africa (UNEDRA).

The African continent, with over a billion people, has been one of the rapidly growing economies in the world in the last eight years. It is no wonder, therefore, that the continent is awakening to look into space-based EO and Geo-Information Sciences technologies and investment to proliferate, harness and use the benefits that this technology offers. The sudden increase in the deployment of satellites by the African States might appear irrational to some, especially that the continent has numerous pressing issues affecting the livelihood of its population. These problems, however, can be tackled using space-based EO and Geospatial techniques to a certain extent.

Prof Woldai concludes that if Africa is to leapfrog its obstacles effectively, the continent needs to invest in science and maths education at schools and develop an indigenous critical mass of trained space scientists, engineers and programmers at universities. The continent must build its capabilities in ICT infrastructure, satellite communication, navigation and positioning, and space sciences. Internet connectivity is another barrier to development that should be tackled.

CD Projekt Red tribute shows Kojima as a Cyberpunk 2077 character – PC Gamer

Hideo Kojima is always a very stylish boy, but his Cyberpunk 2077 doppelganger might have him beat. To congratulate him and the Kojima Productions team on the PC launch of Death Stranding, CD Projekt Red went and turned him into a Cyberpunk 2077 character.

The designer got an early look at Cyberpunk 2077 back in 2018 when he visited CD Projekt Red, and the following year he popped over to the studio's Tokyo Game Show booth to have his picture taken on one of the game's very flashy motorbikes. This photo op appears to have been the inspiration for the excellent Cyberpunk 2077 art that is now gracing Twitter.

There are quite a few common threads connecting Cyberpunk 2077 and the games Kojima has worked on. Transhumanism, irresponsible use of technology, immersive sim shenanigansthey share a lot. Death Stranding's bikes even look a lot like Cyberpunk 2077's.

It might just be a nice gift from Cyberpunk's artists to Kojima, but given that it looks a bit like an in-game model, it does make me wonder if Kojima will actually be hanging out in Night City for players to find. During Cyberpunk 2077's Night Wire livestream, it was revealed that streamers would be getting cameos for some reason, so there's already a precedent.

Kojima, of course, is no stranger to cameos. Death Stranding is full of them, with Kojima (as a goo monster), Geoff Keighly, Jordan Vogt-Roberts and Conan O'Brien all cropping up. He also snuck into Control and can be recruited in Metal Gear Solid 5.

I've reached out to CDPR to find out if we'll be able to find Kojima scooting around on his cool bike in November. In the meantime, check out Andy Kelly's Cyberpunk 2077 hands-on.

The trigger activates a slow-motion effect as soon as you have successfully avoided an enemy attack. Synlungs Artificial lungs that are installed in the cardiovascular system and improve the regeneration of your endurance.

Night City Life spoke about playstyles in Cyberpunk 2077, stating that there wont be accolades for playing the game in a certain way CDPR wouldnt want to coax players into any set style.

A style like Pacifist run is applicable; however, it wont unlock an achievement.

Cyberpunk 2077 is set to launch on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC on November 19th.
