The presidents reelection strategy is to revive the economy by pushing Americans back to work and children back to school without being honest about the risks from the coronavirus pandemic, which he airily waves away.Despitecoronavirus casesurgesthroughout the country, Trump claims that the pandemic is under control and that 99 percent of cases aretotally harmless.

Dr. Fauci gets in the way of that strategy by telling Americans the truth about the pandemic. He regularly reminds them that the pandemic is far from over, urges caution in reopening the economy and the schools, and unhesitatingly contradicts the presidents wildly off-base, feel-good statements.Fauci bluntly insisted that itsobviously notthe case that99 percent of the cases are harmless.

Ina mid-JuneNew York Times-Sienapoll,76 percent of respondents stated that they trusted Fauci foraccurate information about the pandemic.Only 26 percent said the same of Trump, who must have felt the way the Evil Queen did when the Magic Mirror said that Snow White was the fairest of them all.

Indeed, there are reports that the pollaccountsfor the botched attempt by the White House to kneecap Dr. Fauci with snide presidential remarks (nice man,but hes made a lot of mistakes), unflattering cartoons, an opposition-research style memorandum critical of Fauci and even an op-ed by that well known medical giant, White House trade adviser Peter Navarro, contendingthat Faucis advice should be taken withskepticism and caution.

Dr. Fauci pushed back hard, which probably stunned a president used to bending, if not breaking, any member of his administration who crosses him, and not used to having someone out-tough him. Fauci called the White House attacksbizarre; asserted that the publiccan trust me; dismissed Navarro asin a world by himself; and said "lets stop this nonsense and focus on the virus.

What happened next was extremely gratifying to anyone who likes to see bullies get their comeuppance.Numerous public health experts rallied to Faucis defense, and even Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnellAddison (Mitch) Mitchell McConnellMemo to Mitch: Repeal the Republican tax increase Travel industry calls for targeted relief amid coronavirus pandemic Why Dr. Fauci is Donald Trump's worst nightmare MORE (R-Ky.) said he hadtotal confidence in Fauci. Trump backed down, which he probably hates to do even more than wearing a mask in public.Trump rebuked Navarro for the op-ed and, sounding like a supplicant, insisted that hegets along very well with Dr. Fauci.

Generations from now, when historians examine the Great Coronavirus Pandemic of 2020-21, they will likely be baffled as to why the president of the United States refused to listen to, and even tried to discredit, the nations leading virologist when so many Americans were falling ill and dying from a virus. They may also have a hard time understanding how, after so many centuries of scientific progress, the American people could confer their highest office on a man who, when his personal political needs and science conflicted, rejected science and scientific expertise.

Fortunately, Dr. Fauci emerged unscathed, and perhaps even stronger, from the White Houses attempted mauling. In the absence of presidential leadership, his expertise and advice is much-needed as the coronavirus plunges its talons ever deeper into the American people. When Fauci looks at a map of the United States showing coronavirus cases, his focus is on the ugly, spreading red blotches of a pandemic that is killing Americans. When Donald Trump looks at a map like that,he sees only himself.

Why Dr. Fauci is Donald Trump's worst nightmare | TheHill - The Hill

The Note: Trust in Trump’s word plummets, as harsh realities sink in – ABC News

The TAKE with Rick Klein

A president used to defining his own realities is running into some stubborn ones -- big enough to force him to maneuver around them rather than try to barrel through them.

This week saw President Donald Trump replace his campaign manager and downscale plans for his convention. One move was a tacit acknowledgement of his political standing, while the other is a nod to the health realities of the country.

The president himself largely ignored the worsening COVID-19 crisis in his public remarks this week, even while more states with Trump-allied governors caved and mandated masks. And one Republican governor who has clashed with Trump blasted him for ignoring his administration's own experts while "talking and tweeting like a man more concerned about boosting the stock market or his reelection plans."

Campaign manager for the Trump 2020 reelection campaign Brad Parscale speaks at a press conference in Des Moines, Iowa, Feb. 3, 2020.

The president is coming up against a crisis of trust. The new ABC News/Washington Post poll out Friday morning shows 64% of Americans questioning his credibility on COVID-19, with nearly as many -- 60% -- disapproving of his handling of the pandemic.

Tellingly, Trump this week backed a half step away from a confrontation with Dr. Anthony Fauci -- even as people in his White House declared open warfare on him. He has not, though, come down firmly on Fauci's side, just as he has not wavered in his pressure on schools to reopen this fall.

Trump's political response has been, in part, to try new lines of attacks out on former Vice President Joe Biden.

But the president's political predicament isn't about Biden, or Fauci, or GOP critics or who is running his campaign. It's about Trump himself, who is leading a nation that doesn't trust him at the moment.

The RUNDOWN with Alisa Wiersema

Away from the campaign trail, but still looking toward November, Trump has made repeated -- yet unfounded -- claims about widespread mail voting fraud. With just over 100 days until an election in which voters are expected to predominately cast ballots by mail given pandemic conditions, Trump's messaging on the issue appears to be increasingly scattered.

While the president frequently ties his allegations of fraud to Democrats, on Thursday, White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany did not indicate that the president was aware a member of his own party, Rep. Steve Watkins of Kansas, is facing new criminal charges in a voter fraud case. Watkins was endorsed by Trump in 2018 and was a speaker at a Trump rally in the lead up to the midterm election.

Noting that the president "does have very real concerns about voter fraud," McEnany proceeded to give "information" that aimed to support those concerns. Her list included "about 1% of absentee ballots nationwide" having been "thrown out" in 2016; a Postal Service truck "that may have been carrying mail-in ballots" having caught fire; and an incident in which Republicans received Democratic ballots in New Jersey. She added that the ballots "had been voided and then reissued."

President Donald Trump touts administration efforts to curb federal regulations during an event on the South Lawn of the White House in Washington, July 16, 2020.

Later that day on the campaign front, Steve Guest, an RNC Rapid Response Director, tweeted, "Elizabeth Warren endorses voter fraud, says her dog will be voting Democrat," and linked to a video in which Warren jokes about her golden retriever voting for Biden. Guest added that "voter fraud is not a joking matter," citing an Atlanta-based report of a deceased cat with a human name getting a voter registration form in the mail. The report included a statement from the Georgia secretary of state's office saying that even if the cat were alive and came to the polls, it wouldn't be able to vote without a valid ID.

The increasingly scattershot messaging could be leaving a very real footprint in battleground states. Already, Democrats are touting their ability to outpace Republicans in enrolling voters to vote by mail in Florida. Sounding a warning more than a thousand miles away in Wisconsin, the chairman of the Republican Party of Fond du Lac County, Rohn Bishop, said the GOP is risking scaring away their own voters, a notion with which his fellow Republican and state Majority Leader, Jim Steineke agreed.

"Taking a stand can be lonely. Very lonely. But I think I'm right," Bishop tweeted Thursday.

The TIP with Quinn Scanlan

It's still unclear how serious Kanye West's presidential bid is, but the rapper-fashion designer is quickly approaching the point when it will be mathematically impossible for him to even hit the magic number of electoral votes a candidate needs to become president of the United States.

West successfully got his name on Oklahoma's general election ballot Wednesday by paying the $35,000 filing fee, which would be a financial feat for the average independent candidate, but is pocket change for him. But he failed to submit the 30,000 valid signatures required to get on the ballot in battleground Michigan before Thursday's 4 p.m. deadline.

In this file photo taken on November 6, 2019, US rapper Kanye West attends the WSJ Magazine 2019 Innovator Awards at MOMA in New York City.

Oklahoma's seven electoral votes wouldn't get West any closer to the presidency than he is now. He needs 270 to win, and after missing Michigan's deadline, there are only 306 electoral votes left among the states, plus the District of Columbia, where the filing deadlines have yet to pass. If he misses the last July deadlines -- in Missouri, New Jersey and West Virginia -- the maximum amount of electoral votes he could potentially achieve would be 284.

Five states have an Aug. 3 deadline, and even if he just missed Pennsylvania, which requires only 5,000 signatures and a modest $200 filing fee, his presidential aspirations would have to wait until 2024 -- assuming he doesn't forge ahead with an attempted write-in campaign -- but in most states, even write-in candidates have to submit paperwork by a deadline if they want their votes counted, and in several others, it's not an option at all.

Reality shows shortfalls of Trumps claim to worlds best testing for coronavirus – The Denver Post

WASHINGTON Here are some snapshots from what President Donald Trump describes as the nation with the best testing in the world for the coronavirus:

In Sun Belt states where the virus is surging, lines of cars with people seeking tests snake for hours in the beating sun, often yielding results so far after the fact that theyre useless.

In Pittsburgh, adults who are afraid theyve been exposed to the coronavirus are being asked to skip testing if they can quarantine at home for 14 days to help reduce delays and backlogs.

In Hawaii, the governor will wait another month to lift a two-week quarantine on visitors because of test supply shortages and delays that potential visitors are facing in getting results.

Testing has been a challenge everywhere, says Utah Republican Gov. Gary Herbert.

The White House insists its giving states whatever they need. But public health experts say the testing system is in shambles and federal leadership is lacking. Trumps persistent salesmanship about the prowess of testing in the United States is colliding with a far different reality for those affected by the explosion in coronavirus cases.

The long lines and processing delays are contributing to the virus spread and upending plans to reopen stores, schools and other activities that are vital to the economic rebound that Trump himself is intent on bringing about.

We have the best testing in the world, the president insisted Tuesday. He falsely claimed the cases are created because of the fact that we do tremendous testing.

But U.S. testing on a per-capita basis lags other countries that have done a far better job of controlling their outbreaks. And state, local and federal officials are warning of the consequences of testing bottlenecks including tests rendered useless because results come too late.

Its essentially worthless to have a test result that comes back after 48 hours, said Dr. Leana Wen, an emergency physician and public health professor at George Washington University who previously served as Baltimores health commissioner. She explained that after that time, the window to begin contact tracing and prevent additional infections has essentially closed.

We are nowhere near being able to rein in this virus with the amount of testing we have available at the moment, she added. Testing is the linchpin.

The Trump administration plays down the problem.

Adm. Brett Giroir, assistant health secretary, says more than half of U.S. states are processing test results in three days or less, adding everybody is doing a really good job as much as they can.

Guidelines issued by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend that states, as they lift final virus restrictions, have a turnaround time under two days.

White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany suggests that its states that need to do more.

There are various different types of tests in this country, she said Thursday. Some take longer to process than others. But we have surged testing to the states and we encourage them to use it to their best ability and to process those tests as quickly as possible.

Yet even Republican governors say they need more federal help.

Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan, chairman of the National Governors Association, is deeply critical of the administrations testing response.

We expected something more than constant heckling from the man who was supposed to be our leader, Hogan wrote in an op-ed in The Washington Post this week. Trump soon disabused us of that expectation.

On April 6, he declared that testing wasnt Washingtons responsibility after all, Hogan went on. States can do their own testing, he quoted Trump as saying. Were the federal government. Were not supposed to stand on street corners doing testing.

Whoever is responsible for testing shortfalls, the result is working against Trumps own goals to move beyond the virus and get the economy moving.

In Hawaii, Democratic Gov. David Ige said a shortage of chemical reagents used in testing was one reason the state will delay a plan to make it easier for tourists to visit. It was a huge disappointment to many in Hawaii hoping for a surge in tourism to reopen hotels, get people back to work and reduce the states 22.6% unemployment rate.

In Pennsylvanias Allegheny County, which encompasses Pittsburgh and 1.2 million residents, health officials are trying to triage the demand for tests. Dr. Debra Bogen, director of the countys Health Department, is asking adults who are concerned that they were exposed, but do not have symptoms, to put off getting tested.

Even as the White House sticks with its rosy outlook, the U.S. governments top official in charge of coronavirus testing is urging Americans not to get retested for COVID-19 to confirm theyve recovered.

Its clogging up the system, Giroir said. He said U.S. officials will soon issue guidelines explicitly recommending against the practice, except for patients in the most severe cases.

The American Clinical Laboratory Association said many of its labs are being stretched beyond capacity or dont have the supplies they need, and this week encouraged members to give priority to those most in need, especially hospitalized and symptomatic patients.

I feel a bit like a broken record nothing has really changed, said Dr. Carmen Wiley, president of the American Association of Clinical Chemistry. Theres a huge disconnect between what the task force indicates is happening and what we are truly experiencing in the field.

U.S. officials are aiming to increase the use of rapid tests to shorten turnaround times. Those tests can usually be developed in 15 minutes or less and be performed at testing sites, doctors offices and clinics. They tend to be less accurate than the tests that need to be processed at clinical laboratories.

This week U.S. health officials announced they would begin shipping rapid testing machines and kits to nursing homes in COVID-19 hot spots. The goal is to eventually provide the equipment to all nursing homes in the U.S.

The Health and Human Services Department has also been establishing surge test sites in hot spot areas to increase testing for vulnerable populations, said Devin OMalley a spokesman for Vice President Mike Pence, who is leading the coronavirus task force.

Lawrence Gostin, a public health expert at Georgetown University, called the Trump administrations claims about effective testing laughable.

The on-the-ground experience, in fact, is borne out by the data, Gostin said. We dont have the testing kits. We dont have the labs to process it. There are backlogs. All of this is very unhelpful.

African women are leading biotechnology’s advance across the continent – Alliance for Science

Women researchers are strongly influencing the adoption of agricultural biotechnology in Africa.

As African women, we are the ones who suffer most whenever drought and food shortages strike, despite the availability of technological solutions to these problems, said Dr. Felister Makini, deputy director general in charge of crops at the Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organization (KALRO).

We are looking for new solutions and how we can use technology to give our people and ourselves better and improved crop varieties to fight hunger and improve the quality of living, said Dr. Priver Namanya Bwesigye, who leads Ugandas banana research program at the National Agricultural Research Laboratories (NARL) at Kawanda. We also need varieties that can give us more in terms of nutrients.

Throughout Africa, women are in labs developing crops that produce high yields and can tolerate or resist disease, as well as healthier, more productive livestock. They are also found in meeting rooms and gardens informing the public about their innovations and how these improved crops can aid the fight against hunger across both the continent and the globe.

It is time to tell the public about the positive side of biotechnology, said Professor Caroline Thoruwa, chairperson for African Women in Science and Engineering.

In Uganda, where bananas are an important staple food and cash crop, Bwesigye is in charge of developing varieties that offer farmers better options.

She and her team are using the tools of genetic engineering to develop banana varieties that are resistant to nematodes, bacterial wilt and weevils. The most advanced of these genetically modified varieties is a banana biofortified to provide vitamin A. It should reach farmers immediately after Uganda implements a legal biosafety framework guiding the use of GMOs.

We have trialled the technology in multiple locations all the four banana planting regions of Uganda and it will be ready by the time we have a legal framework, Bwesigye said. We have to do this [multi-location field trials] before we can give it to the farmers. We want to be sure that different farmers across the country can plant the variety and have similar results. In this case, all the banana yields should be rich in pro-vitamin A.

But Bwesigyes program does much more than develop improved bananas using biotechnology. It also employs conventional plant breeding tools to produce heartier varieties, including a banana resistant to black sigatoka disease. When shes not in the lab, Bwesigye conducts extensive outreach to farmers and young people to explain agricultural biotechnology and why Uganda, Africa and the world need this tool.

Dr. Barbara Mugwanya Zawedde is also championing the adoption of agricultural biotechnology in Africa. Shes currently director for research at Ugandas Zonal Agricultural Research and Development Institute in Mukono, which is under the jurisdiction of the National Agricultural Research Organization (NARO).

But before that, she was the coordinator for the Uganda Biosciences Information Center (UBIC) NAROs knowledge and information-sharing hub. It champions an appreciation of modern biosciences research for agricultural development and works to educate stakeholders on the importance of biosafety.

In that role, Zawedde engaged religious leaders, local communities, farmers, extension agents, legislators, public ministries, women in agriculture, students and others to raise awareness about new technologies and their safety.

After earning a doctorate in plant breeding, genetics and biotechnology from Michigan State University, Zawedde returned home to Uganda in 2013 to discover we had gaps in communication as well as in regulation, she recalled.

So, she worked with Dr. Yona Baguma, now deputy director general for NARO, to set up the biosciences information center. Their goal was to bring to the fore these new technologies that people were not talking about and to emphasise the importance of regulating them.

The regulatory framework [we have been calling for] is not just for the introduction of these new technologies, but for their regulation as well, Zawedde said.

To an extent, Zawedde and UBIC have been successful.

Parliament passed the National Biotechnology and Biosafety Bill on two occasions, though President Yoweri Museveni has yet to sign it into law. Additionally, more Ugandans now appreciate the science and what it can do to improve their lives. Biotechnology and biosafety elements also have been included in the countrys school curriculums.

It will be easier to adopt these technologies [once we have a regulatory framework] because more people today understand these technologies and how they can help improve agriculture and food security in Uganda and the region, Zawedde said

Similarly, the Women in Biosciences Forum is working in Kenya to make everyone sure knows about the value of biotechnology and the role that women are playing to advance the science.

We need to raise the status of women in biotechnology and also encourage women to network in order to achieve the noble goal of sharing their science, Thoruwa said. Women must be involved for Africa to advance in agri-biotech.

Several African countries have approved the cultivation of GMO crops and others have conducted trials for GM crop varieties. But in many of the countries that are conducting research, GM seeds have yet to reach farmers and consumers because the political leadership is swayed by opposition and remains afraid to adopt biotechnology, the women scientists observed.

We need to speak with one voice and advocate for a predictable policy environment, said KALROs Makini.

The detractors will always be there, Bwesigye said. But we need to understand that these technologies, pretty much like everything else in life, have advantages and disadvantages. We just have to harness the advantages.

One such advantage is being able to develop a staple food crop, like a banana, that delivers vitamin A, a crucial nutrient that is lacking in almost 30 percent of Uganda children below the age of 5. It is a no brainer, Bwesigye said about the value of adopting the pro-vitamin A banana.

Despite the political obstacles, Bwesigye and her colleagues remain undiscouraged. Zawedde said that women will continue to conduct communication and outreach, calling on governments to give farmers a chance to plant some of these improved crops.

We only need awareness, awareness and more awareness, Bwesigye said. Then mind-sets will change and adoption of these technologies will be easier.

Leave the wetsuit home: Warm water forecast for local beaches – fox5sandiego.com

SAN DIEGO Residents around San Diego County who plan on taking a dip in the ocean this weekend can look forward to warm water.

The elevated temperatures, reported by forecasters and noted in an article Thursday by the San Diego Union-Tribune, will account for some of the warmest water around the region recorded on this week over the past 10 years.

The water was around 71.6 degrees at Mission Beach on Friday, 72.3 degrees in Oceanside, and over 74 degrees in both La Jolla and Encinitas. Under clear, sunny skies, the water temperatures should be elevated throughout the weekend, even reaching 77 in some spots.

Beaches remain open in San Diego County during the coronavirus pandemic, but residents are urged to only visit with members of their immediate household and to maintain social distance from others.

As the U-Ts Gary Robbins points out, its also always a good idea to shuffle your feet as you enter and exit the water to scare off stingrays.

People were just walking with their coolers and their umbrellas and their kids down the street to walk to the park, said David Donahue, owner of Donahues Clam Castle.

People are finding other ways into Hammonasset State Park afterit reaches the reduced parking limit under COVID-19 guidelines.

A lot of out of state plates, a lot of Connecticut platesbut Ive never seen the side streets down here so full of parked cars, andpeople walking into Hammonasset, said Young.

I get that question all the time from people coming in canwe park here and go to the beach? and I have to unfortunately say to them no,said Donahue.

Department of Energy and Environmental Protection Commissioner Katie Dykes reiterated the message today, telling people not to walk in to state parks.

We are doing this to keep you safe. Please do not park on aside street and try to walk in, said Dykes.

Madison resident Vincent Siniscalchi agrees.

I wouldnt let the people walk, theyre walking down Route 1 which is dangerous, said Siniscalchi

Madison police say theres little they can do on the roadsand paths that are state property. Theyre aware of the parking headaches, sotheyve added new no parking signs on town streets.

If youre parked in front of a fire hydrant or you're blocking a driveway or blocking a driveway, you will be towed. I mean thats the law, said Capt. Joseph Race of the Madison Police Department.

He says people who have driven hours from out of state arentlikely to go home if they find Hammonasset closed when they get to Madison. So theyrewilling to work with people if they follow the rules.

The town of Madison has three beaches that are open to thepublic, only the parking is restricted to residents.

The train station does have plenty of parking up that way, there is on-street parking in the center of town, said Race.

Theyre also reducing capacity at the town beaches whereMadison recreation staff will monitor the number of people in the sand.

At a certain point, we may have to close the gates to walk-ins as well.

He adds theyll have extra patrols out this weekendmonitoring parking and handing out tickets, so plan ahead and pack patience.

Officials Warn of Beach Parking Problems In Madison - NBC Connecticut

Its been party hearty at Rhode Islands beaches, and Raimondo is cracking down – The Boston Globe

We are struggling to keep the crowds under control at the beaches, Raimondo said.

Even with parking capacity limited, Rhode Island beaches saw 50,000 more cars last month than at the same time last year, she said. And last weekend, the state received reports of numerous social distancing and face mask scofflaws at the beaches, particularly people in their 20s.

It got out of control last weekend, Raimondo said. Im hearing from far too many businesses that often young employees are getting harassed by patrons who are cranky about keeping social distance or wearing a mask. You shouldnt have to deal with that.

So the state will place parking limits on those two popular beaches while also stepping up enforcement to ensure that beach-goers take health precautions and dont park illegally on surrounding roads. Temperatures are predicted to be in the 90s this weekend.

Im sorry that we have to do this, but its necessary, Raimondo said.

The governor said she understands the desire of Ocean State residents to hit the beach. I get it, she said. Vacations have been canceled. Everyone has been stuck in the house. Lots of summer camps are still canceled. You dont know what to do with your kids. Its 90 degrees. Its time to go to the beach.

But if people are going to go to the shore, they must wear face masks when using the restroom, going to the concession stand, or gathering on pavilions in groups.

If people continue to flout those rules, the state could see the virus surge as it has in other states, Raimondo warned. For example, she said, Florida saw the number of COVID-19 cases double in 15 days, Arizona saw a 300 percent increase in cases in June, and Texas saw its hospitalizations double in just 14 days.

The point is: This changes quickly, Raimondo said.

And if a similar surge hits Rhode Island, the governor said she will be forced to clamp down and close parts of the economy that have reopened since the pandemic began.

On Tuesday, the Department of Health reported 102 new cases of COVID-19, marking the first time since June 10 that the state reported at least 100 new infections, and the 3.5 percent positive test rate was the highest since the end of May.

By Wednesday, the numbers were back down: The state reported 52 new cases, the positive test rate was down to 1.8 percent, and Raimondo said Rhode Island remains in a good place relative to other states.

But, she said, If we let our guard down, we are going to see a surge. Thats not my opinion. That is just a fact. This virus is lurking with us and will be every day until we have a widely available vaccine.

Raimondo warned that while the statewide positive test rate is back under 2 percent, 7 percent of Rhode Islanders in their 20s are testing positive, and she said that too many people in that age bracket are congregating at beaches while ignoring face mask and social distance rules.

You guys got to do better, she said. I know its summer. I know you want to party. I know you want to go to the beach. I know you want to go out.

But she said a resurgence in the virus would make it harder for people to return to work, for businesses to reopen, and for students to return to school.

Department of Health Director Dr. Nicole Alexander-Scott said its crucial that Rhode Islanders remain vigilant.

We are absolutely seeing social gatherings as a source of these new cases, whether on the beach where people are close together and not masking, or on boats, at home, and other places, she said. We have to address this together with kindness and consideration.

On Wednesday, the Department of Health reported that two more Rhode Islanders had died of COVID-19, bringing the state death toll to 987. The 52 new cases brought the total number of positive tests to 17,640. A total of 59 people are hospitalized with the virus, five are in intensive care, and three are on ventilators, the state reported.

Alexander-Scott announced that Rhode Island will launch a second round of serology testing to see how many people have coronavirus antibodies in their blood. The testing will give health officials a better understanding of how prevalent the virus is in the state, she said. Rhode Island is one of just three sites in the country doing this round of testing, along with Detroit and New York City, she said.

Also, Raimondo provided details of her plan to use federal coronavirus relief funding to help small businesses.

She announced that $50 million will be made available to support small businesses that were hit hardest by the pandemic, such as restaurants, caterers, and other businesses with 20 or fewer employees. Grants of up to $15,000 will go to businesses that can show they have lost significant portions of their revenue in past few months, she said.

Raimondo said 20 percent of the funds will be set aside for minority-owned businesses.

If the initial $50 million goes quickly, that can be replenished with additional federal funds, she said. This is a first step. This isnt it. This is the beginning.

Raimondo announced that another $26 million in federal stimulus money will be made available for critical small business support services, including nonprofit grants, technical assistance to businesses, and a repositioning program to help change business models.

We have heard a lot from small businesses that, yes, they need some money to keep the lights on, but they also need a hand to adjust their business model for this new economy how to sell things online, how to allow people to work from home, she said.

Raimondo announced that another $20 million will be made available from the Small Business Development Fund that the General Assembly authorized last year, and the state is working with federal Economic Development Administration to provide $5 million to help the states tourism industry.

Raimondo had criticized the Small Business Development Fund when it was proposed last year, but she said it has been transformed into a program that can help small businesses hurt by the coronavirus outbreak.

With all those funding sources are combined, Raimondo said the result is that $100 million will quickly go out the door to small businesses.

But the applications wont be available online for a couple of weeks, she said, adding that the framework for the funding would be posted later Wednesday at commerceri.com.

Roxbury Offers On-the-Spot Beach Passes as Hot Weekend Approaches – TAPinto.net

ROXBURY, NJ As the weekend forecast calls for temperatures in the 90s, heres some good news: The township is now selling a limited number of same-day passes to Horseshoe Lake Beach.

The decision was announced Tuesday by Roxbury Mayor Bob DeFillippo.

Although the beach in Succasunna has been open since June 27, those who wanted to go there but didnt want to buy season passes had to pre-registerthe day before their visit if they wanted day passes.

We have been monitoring beach attendance, as we said we would, and staff has determined, based on their review, that we can offer a few day passes each day, DeFillippo said. Ten day passes will be available on days when registration is otherwise not full.

In an effort to ensure sufficient social distancing at the beach, attendance is limited to 280 people at one time. The mayor said this plan seems to be working.

"I am pleased to report that Township Manager John Shepherd tells me all is going well at the beach and, for the most part, beach-goers are practicing social distancing, DeFillippo said. We want to thank everyone for their cooperation while visiting the beach.

The on-the-spot day passes will be available at the beach on a first-come-first-served basis. They will cost $5 for a resident and $10 for non-residents.

DeFillippo said Roxbury Councilman Tom Carey was the chief advocate for offering daily passes.

Masks and Distancing 'Not That Much to Ask'

Speaking on July 14, DeFillippo said 17 more Roxbury residents were determined to have COVID-19 since he last gave an update on June 23. That brought the total to 303 reported cases, he said.

While the number of confirmed cases has dramatically slowed, we did see a slight uptick since our last report a reminder that Covid-19 is not yet through with Roxbury, said the mayor.

He urged people to wear masks when they are outside and unable to be at least six feet away from others, as dictated by Gov. Phil Murphys recent order.

We ask that residents be considerate to others and practice social distancing in our parks and on our trails, DeFillippo said. We have received several reports that people are not keeping a safe distance when using our recreational facilities and are not wearing masks.

He contended it is very inconsiderate and potentially dangerous to others when you do not follow those rules, and asserted that adhereing tothe guidelines is not much to ask, and we simply do not understand why anyone would object.

How We Planned a Multigenerational Beach Trip to Emerald Isle, N.C. – Cond Nast Traveler

All of our doctors agreed that by driving to the beach house, which had touchless check-in, and aiming to stay there for the week with minimal trips into town, we were taking a fairly safe, low-risk trip. Because my family is all clustered in Northern Virginia and own their cars, they were only crossing one state border.

The biggest logistical question was how I could get there from New York. A friend who had just tested negative for a live COVID-19 test and was in my quarantine bubble ended up driving me to my mother's house, and from there I rode to the beach with my mom. The drive from New York to Virginia goes through four states, including New Jersey, Delaware, Pennsylvania, and Marylandand we did not plan a single stop, rather pulling over as we needed to eat or use the restroom, and sussing it out from there. It's hard to emphasize how consistently safe the rest stops felt across all states, from New York to North Carolina. Masks were required, social distancing was being practiced, and sanitation appeared high.

Lastly, we plotted out all of our meals for the duration of the trip in a shared spreadsheet, well in advance, with different adults assigned to various meals. This allowed us to do as much advanced shopping as possible, and bring in a majority of our groceries. In the end, only a few stray stops into town for fresh ingredients, like seafood, were needed.

We brought all of our own beach chairs, umbrellas, and boogie boards, mainly because we already had the gear we needed for a week of beach days. Our days were loosely structured around meals, with a group breakfast starting at 8 a.m. (though some slept in), hitting the beach around 10:30 a.m., and lunch on the sand, preferably with a Modelo in hand. In the evenings, cocktail hour and a group dinner were always on the agenda.

On the beach, we collected seashells, swam, read, and someone was always napping in the sun. After coming from such a densely populated city like New York, where there's no choice but to wear masks wherever you go, it was such a relief to be on a wide, open beach where the next stranger was at least 50 yards away. We had read up on bubbling for a trip like this, and all our prep work made it possible to hang up our masks while at our homebase, and hug constantly. We pretty much kept to the house, but when we did venture into town, it was masks on, six feet away from other people, and hand sanitizer at the ready. But another thing that came as a surprise, after my months in a crowded city? At the local Food Lion, the parking lot was so large you couldn't get near anyone else. Ditto inside the actual store, which was so massive, I only got within feet of another person at check-out.

One of the reasons I'm so in favor of the beach house trip is that once you've arrived, the rest is easy. Despite being so simple, this trip was especially poignant: I'd been quarantining in my Brooklyn studio since March; they'd been doing the same in their respective homes (with children, no less). Six weeks before the plan came together, we weren't even sure when we'd be together again. But here I was, building Legos with my niece and nephew; cuddling up for a movie the one day it rained; screaming as we jumped over large, salty ocean waves together. Every night, as we sat down to dinner and toasted over crab cakes and steaks fresh off the grill, the ocean right behind us, it made every bit of preparation worth it.

Wide pull of alternative medicine and wild vaccine claims – The Tribune India

Rahul Singh

Most rational people have an open mind on different types of medicine. What is labelled as alternative medicine in contrast to allopathic or modern seems to have become increasingly popular, especially here in India. Various forms of therapy and medicine come under this category. The late former Prime Minister Morarji Desai was an avid follower of urine therapy, repulsive for most of us. He never took any modern medicines, not even vaccinations, which used to be essential for travel abroad. Yet, he kept remarkably healthy and lived to a ripe old age. Cows urine is considered therapeutic by many Indians.

The use of magnets for alleviating joint pains, especially of the knees, is also practised. The ostensible theory is that even if there is enough cartilage still there, it can be regenerated by electromagnetic waves, and thereby make movement easier. I know of a friend living in the US who came to India to get such treatment. She could not climb steps and walked with great difficulty because her knees gave too much pain. But before getting a knee replacement, which the American doctors had advised her, she decided to try magnetic therapy. It worked wonders for her, as the cartilage did indeed regenerate and give her relief, at least for a couple of years. However, there are others who have tried such treatment, alas with no improvement. Then, there are some who swear by the oil massages administered in Kerala for arthritic pains.

In 2014, the Indian Government set up an Ayush Ministry, Ayush being an acronym for Ayurveda, Unani, Siddha and Homeopathy. Siddha is similar to Ayurveda, the main difference being that Ayurveda is in Sanskrit, whereas Siddha is in Tamil. Unani is the Perso-Arabic traditional medicine, popular in Mughal times and apparently has an ancient Greek origin connected to Hippocrates. Homeopathy, founded in 1796 by a German physician, Samuel Hahnemann, is perhaps the most controversial of all these forms of medicine. It somehow has a big following in India. Many dismiss it as quackery, since its medicines are tiny, sweet white pills. Another friend of mine swore by it, as it had cured his severe asthma. His wife, a doctor, was sceptical. She decided to test the pills at a laboratory. She found them to be pure cortisone, a drug which does cure asthma temporarily, but its constant use has serious side-effects. Chinas best-known alternate medicine is acupuncture, the insertion of thin, long needles in certain parts of the body to treat various ailments.

The present government, in its nationalistic fervour, has gone all-out to promote Ayurveda, which its adherents claim goes back some 5,000 years. Yoga is an integral part of Ayurveda, and presently the best-known person who has linked the two is Baba Ramdev. However, there were others before him who were just as popular. In the 1960s and 70s, there were Maharishi Mahesh Yogi and Dhirendra Brahmachari, both of whom became immensely wealthy and influential. Mahesh Yogi was the guru of transcendental meditation and claimed to be able to do yogic flying and levitation, without really providing proof. The Beatles became his followers, until there were charges of sexual misconduct against him. You are just like us, a disillusioned John Lennon told him when leaving his ashram. Brahmachari was Indira Gandhis yoga guru, and reportedly very close to her. He owned a fleet of cars, several sprawling ashrams, planes and airfields, even a gun factory. He died unlamented in one of his planes which crashed. I recall another guru who claimed that he could walk on water. He set a date in Bombay, as it was then called, when he would accomplish his Christ-like supernatural feat. Before an array of cameras and reporters, he trod on water in a tank and sank like a stone.

Ramdev seems to have been the smartest of the lot. He has deftly used his political clout to acquire large tracts of land at ridiculously-low concessional rates, to set up lucrative ashrams and farms. He has also cleverly converted his yoga skills and popularity to build an Ayurvedic medicines and products empire. Even those who scoff at the efficacy of alternative medicines have to admit that Ayurvedas use of various medicinal plants and herbs has produced products that are effective and have credibility.

Nevertheless, the reality is that the major medical breakthroughs and the discovery of vaccines and drugs that have saved tens of millions of lives worldwide have not been made by alternative medicine, but by allopathic doctors and scientists.

No major discoveries or medical breakthroughs have been made by Ayurveda or any other alternative medicine. The bark of the Cinchona tree, it was found a couple of centuries ago, produced a substance that countered malarial fever. It became quinine, a cure for malaria that is still used. However, it was an accidental discovery, not an Ayurvedic formulation. Admittedly, there have been disasters with some modern medicines. Thalidomide was meant to help pregnant women. Many who took it produced deformed babies.

Still, a large number of Indians repose a great deal of faith in Ayurveda and its medicines. Sadly, that faith has been badly dented by Ramdevs recent claim that his company had found a 100 per cent cure for Covid-19. Fortunately, the authorities did not buy that line, though they have said he can call it an immunity booster. All the top medical researchers in the world, including the WHO, have said that a reliable vaccine to counter the virus is at least a year to 18 months away, probably more. For Ramdev to claim that he has done all the necessary clinical trials is patently absurd and false. He has done a huge disservice to Ayurveda and eroded much of its credibility.

Witness recalls loss of 9 lives in Jammeh Alternative Treatment Programme – The Point

She recalled that she was first diagnosed with HIV/AIDS in 2004, adding that she got an accident and blood transmission was given to her before she was diagnosed with the virus.

Witness said she was told that in those days people that normally donate blood were not usually checked.

She recalled that she was given different kinds of treatments. I was healthy in those days because people never thought that I was HIV positive. I was later consulted and joined Allah Tentu Society as the president. The group was to help people living with HIV, more particularly women and children."

She explained that she got to know the former President Yahya Jammeh's Alternative Treatment in 2007. According to her, she was informed by her colleague and then she went to Kanifing Hospital and registered. She said after the registration, they were taken to a big hall where beds were already prepared.

"The following day, we were taken to Banjul at State House to take our medications. It was when Yahya Jammeh, Dr. Mbowe, Dr. Mariam, Dr. Njie and others in uniform came before us. We were told that after starting the medicines, we will be healed before two weeks."

She further testified that they were given towels and a small cup and put into the room. She added that Jammeh will do his incantation and later rub a lotion on their bodies.

The protected witness stated that on the first day of treatment when she took the concoction from Jammeh, she experienced nothing disturbing.

"There were types of medicine called chakery and jinneh that created problems for us. The medicines were given to us two times a day. I spent two months in the Alternative Treatment."

She added that Jammeh had ordered for filming to be broadcast on the national television without their consent.

"When we saw the images on the television, all of us were worried and some started calling us."

"I am feeling many difficulties and because of the hardship, I left my community and I couldn't pay my rent. Now when some people who know and pass-by me begging, they cry."

In her concluding remarks, she called for support to her child as his father disowned him.

New UK Study Investigates the Effects of Esports Gambling – The Game Haus

Over the past year, there has been a number of questions raised in regard to gambling elements found in video games. Most notably, loot boxes have been highlighted as a particularly questionable form of gambling hidden in computer games.

Now, a new study from the University of York in England looks into the many ways in which gambling has found its way into the online gaming community.

The full study, entitled Beyond loot boxes: a variety of gambling-like practices in video games are linked to problem gambling and disordered gaming, specifically questions the logic of focusing purely on loot boxes as a problem. In-game currencies, token wagering, social casinos, and esports are noted as potentially harmful elements for younger players.

The study took a sample of 1,081 adults from the UK, covering a broad spectrum of age, sex, and ethnicity. A key take-away found that around 18 percent of the respondents had taken part in gambling-related activities since the beginning of 2020. However, it was unable to ascertain whether this involvement would result in problem gambling later on.

Betting on esports differs quite considerably from betting on traditional sports, particularly in relation to understanding the game. Its unlikely that non-gamers from a sports background would be attracted to esports unless it was a virtual version of a traditional game, like football. The most popular esports games focus on multiplayer and strategy games like Dota or Starcraft.

However, with the recent suspension of traditional sports around the globe, a lot of football fans or other sports enthusiasts have begun investigating esports betting. With esports exploding in popularity over the past few years, knowledge of the games is becoming more mainstream. As the study notes, the 2018 League of Legends World Championships enjoyed a viewership of over 44 million people.

The paper highlights a separate study that found a possible correlation between esports betting and problem gambling: Research has suggested that esports betting may be linked to esports spectatorship and video gaming, and that esports betting may be linked more strongly to problem gambling than traditional sports betting, it states. However, it concludes that there is a lack of knowledge with regard to the prevalence of the problem.

While many gamers who also enjoy gambling may play at casinosx.com or similar online casino sites, its unclear whether the same gambling activities cross over into esports gambling. The concept of being actively involved in playing a game for money versus betting on the outcome of somebody else playing a game does have significant differences.

Nowadays, the line between these two is becoming increasingly blurred. Games like Strike! esports Bowling provides a method for players to bet on themselves with real money while playing the game. Sites like Gamer Saloon make it possible for players to create new esports challenges or join existing challenges to play against other players online for real money.

Ultimately, the York University study found that loot boxes may only be the tip of the iceberg in relation to elements of gambling in gaming. In particular, its difficult to conclude whether the removal of these elements would actually reduce harm or simply turn players towards other (possibly more harmful) gambling activities.

However, researchers in the study do highlight the need for engagement and discussion going forward. As both the gaming and esports industry involves, emerging technologies threaten to increasingly blur the lines between what is considered safe gaming and what constitutes gambling.

My son was shaking, trying not to go online: how the gambling industry got its claws into children – The Guardian

In Jack Ritchies first term of sixth form, when he was 17, he started to spend his lunch breaks at the bookies down the road from his school in Sheffield, staking his dinner money at the fixed-odds betting terminals. It became a regular thing. No one ever asked for any proof of age.

Early on, Jack had a big win. It was too much money to fit in his pocket; he had to ask the bookies to hold it for him until he could pick it up after school. He came home with 1,000 in cash, his mother, Liz, tells me, blinking in astonishment.

Jack only told his parents hed been gambling a year later, when the 1,000 was long gone, along with the 5,000 his grandmother had left him, and every other spare penny hed scraped together from bits and pieces of work and birthday presents. He knew what hed done was ridiculous and stupid, says Charles, Jacks father. At that stage, we were naive. Were not a gambling family. We thought, this is a young man growing up, doing stupid things, experimenting. We thought hed grow out of it.

Charles took Jack into every betting shop in Sheffield, where Jack left a photograph and signed a form that would exclude him from placing bets there. There he was, a good-looking, ambitious 18-year-old, with his dad, going into these deeply depressing places. Charles shakes his head. Hed come out of them and say: Thats not me. This isnt what I am.

But Jack soon started visiting gambling websites to play online roulette. When he arrived in Hull for his first term at university, he blew his student grant in virtual casinos almost immediately. During the Christmas holidays, Liz and Charles bought software that blocked his access to gambling sites. But it expired after a year.

Jacks gambling was intermittent often triggered when an unsolicited email from one of the bookies landed in his inbox but he began to feel controlled by it, Liz explains. You lose your capacity for self-determination. Jack was used to being a clever boy. I think he will have experienced himself losing that, at an age when he needed to rely on it.

At a time when he was supposed to be forming his identity, Jack began to feel it was slipping away from him. Liz shrugs. He felt he was destroying himself.

For as long as people have gambled, there have been gambling addicts. But over the past 15 years, a perfect storm of technological innovation and new freedoms for the gambling industry has left young people particularly vulnerable. A report by the Gambling Commission last year estimated there are now 55,000 problem gamblers aged 11-16 in England, Scotland and Wales, and 450,000 who gamble regularly. In this age group, gambling is more popular than smoking or taking drugs; 11% of 11 to 16-year-olds report that they gamble every week, compared to only 6% who smoke tobacco and 5% who take drugs.

Jack Ritchie was part of the first generation to begin their teenage years after the 2005 Gambling Act allowed bookmakers, casinos and gambling websites to advertise on television and radio. The industry now spends 1.5bn a year on marketing. Gambling has become normalised and ubiquitous more than half the teams in the Premiere League carry betting firm logos on their shirts. A 2019 study by GambleAware found a 24% rise in industry spending on advertising and marketing campaigns between 2015 and 2018, and that, even if ads were aimed at adults, children still found them appealing. Jacks generation was also the first to grow up when it was normal for teenagers to have laptops in their rooms and smartphones in their pockets. That made it possible to gamble 24 hours a day, without leaving your bedroom, without anyone else knowing.

Jack's distress came from the hold gambling had over his life and the feeling he could never escape it

In response to the Gambling Commissions findings, the first NHS Young Peoples National Problem Gambling Clinic was set up in London in December 2019. The links between problem gambling and stress, depression and mental health problems are growing, said the NHS England chief executive, Simon Stevens . We need to be clear. Tackling mental ill health caused by addiction is everyones responsibility especially those firms that directly contribute to the problem.

So far, those companies have been reluctant to change strategy. When Britains leading specialists on gambling disorders called on firms to suspend advertising early in the coronavirus lockdown, it took them three weeks to agree to begin to pull their ads. (From 9pm to 10pm on Friday 24 April on Channel 4, I counted commercials for gambling websites in every one of the three ad breaks). Regular gamblers are gambling more during lockdown, even without live sports fixtures to bet on.

While adult gambling problems are often measured in terms of debts, the damage done to children and young people can be more insidious, affecting their sense of themselves. For the Ritchie family, the consequences were devastating. On 22 November 2017, seven years after Jack placed his first bet, Liz and Charless wonderful, warm, kind, happy son took his own life. Gambling With Lives, the charity his parents founded after Jacks death, estimates there could be up to 650 gambling-related suicides every year in the UK. The Ritchies are now in contact with more than 60 recently bereaved families; one lost a daughter, all the rest lost sons. The youngest killed himself less than a year ago, aged 18. They all started gambling as children.

I am speaking to Liz and Charles over Zoom from the kitchen table of the family home where Jack grew up with his two older sisters. I recognise it from a video on the Gambling With Lives website, which shows 6ft 4in Jack waltzing with his much shorter mother, bending her backwards over the kitchen sink as they collapse with laughter.

He was a big, happy character, Charles smiles. Very popular, with lots of close friends. He loved football; he cared about politics and was a big supporter of Jeremy Corbyn. Its easy to idealise somebody when they are dead, but he really was genuinely very warm-hearted. All his friends say what they miss about him is his big hugs, Liz adds.

Nobody saw it as a problem. There were no warning bells. It felt so normalised. It's a bit of fun, as the adverts say

Jacks friends all knew he liked to gamble. Nobody saw it as a problem, Charles says. There were no warning bells. It felt so normalised that no one felt they needed to intervene. Its a bit of fun, as the adverts say.

Over seven years, Jack probably lost around 30,000. His distress over gambling was never really about the money; it came from the hold it had over his life and the feeling he could never escape it.

When he died, he was teaching English in Hanoi. He hadnt gambled for three months before leaving the UK, and gambling is banned in Vietnam, so his parents felt it was behind him. Then, one Sunday in November 2017, Jack Skyped his parents and told them he was feeling down because he had gambled again, on British websites.

We bought blocking software for his computer. During the call he installed it on his machine, Charles says. Or so we thought.

At lunchtime three days later, Liz and Charles opened an email with a suicide note. They spent a frantic hour trying to locate Jack. An hour later, his body was found.

The Ritchies have no doubt that he died as a direct result of gambling. We were able to piece together his last day, and, we can see that Jack crashed out, after a day of gambling, and he was dead within an hour and a half, Charles says. Gambling was the root and the trigger of his death.

The coroner at Jacks inquest asked everybody in court, including representatives from the Department of Culture, Media and Sport and the Gambling Commission, to accept that Jack killed himself because of gambling. The Ritchies are bringing legal action to hold the government liable for Jacks death, on the grounds that it didnt provide adequate care for addicts, or sufficient warning about the dangers of gambling.

Over the past 20 years, theres been the growth of a kind of industrialised electronic gambling, Charles says. Fixed-odds betting terminals are the high-profile version, but youve got exactly the same games online.

Dr Matt Gaskell, clinical lead and consultant psychologist for the NHS northern gambling clinics in Manchester, Leeds and Sunderland, tells me the most common formats that bring patients to the clinics are online slot machines, digital roulette and online in-play sports betting (where gamblers bet on specific aspects of an ongoing game, such as who is going to get the next yellow card). In the past, people put a stake on the outcome of a forthcoming event, such as a single football match or horse race. These new online formats offer never-ending opportunities to gamble.

They are designed to maximise losses and what is called time on device per user, Gaskell told the Gambling Related Harm all-party parliamentary group on 11 May. These digital products have design features that distort a gamblers judgment. They reward you with visual and auditory congratulations, even though youre losing money, Gaskell said. So dopamine, this motivation chemical, is released, even when youre losing This pattern of rewards has repeatedly been demonstrated to develop habitual behaviour in animals and humans.

Its not just online bookies that exploit this pattern. A recent study of the most popular desktop videogames showed that more than 70% of games even some designed for young children now contain loot boxes: opportunities for players to spend money on mystery virtual items. They are commonplace in Fortnite, Overwatch and Fifa. Segas Football Manager routinely displays betting odds as a way of measuring probability; whenever League One Matches feature, they are always referred to along with the name of their official sponsor Sky Bet League One. Last September, cognitive psychologists called for loot boxes to be regulated in the UK.

Liz Ritchie is a retired NHS consultant psychotherapist. Children are being groomed to be gamblers, she says. The App Store has rated Segas Football Manager suitable for ages 4+. I do believe there will be a Jimmy Savile moment, and people will suddenly say, What on earth were we doing? When your child dies, that curtain is ripped aside for you. We want to warn other parents because nobody warned us.

Shortly before lockdown, I visit the headquarters of the new Young Peoples National Problem Gambling Clinic, on a busy road in west London. The same building is home to the National Problem Gambling Clinic for adults aged 25 and over. In one of the consulting rooms, I meet consultant psychiatrist Dr Henrietta Bowden-Jones, the director. She set up the adult clinic in 2008.

A lot of our young people start with an early big win. That kicks off a disregulated approach. Gambling disorder is a mental illness, she says. Its a loss of control over gambling behaviour, which for the majority of people is a recreational activity that should not cause any major problems.

When Bowden-Jones describes the specific harms children and young people experience as a result of problem gambling, she could easily be describing the effects of drug addiction.

Sadly, weve had a lot of students dropping out of school or university in the past because of gambling activities. The academic impact is enormous because they are up all night gambling. They lose friends because they borrow money and cant repay it. They steal money. We see people with gambling problems drop out of their sports teams, lose interest in their hobbies, stop playing their musical instruments.

The clinic was set up to reach problem gamblers as young as 13, but Bowden-Jones says the typical young person who reaches the service has hit a crisis point in their late teens, after leaving school. They have no specific mentoring: its not the relationship between teachers and pupils, where teachers may spot something; at university or work, they are not so close. Thats where things can slip out of hand.

Nine out of 10 of the problem gamblers they see are male. They tend to be either extremely interested in sports sports betting is a big problem or have an overinflated sense of self in relation to poker abilities, she says. With young people, theres a significant association with alcohol and drugs. Alcohol disinhibits them. Cocaine is a stimulant, it keeps you going all night. Low mood and anxiety can play a part: sometimes they are using the gambling to act almost as a self-medication.

Bowden-Jones is used to hearing how her older patients fled physical, emotional or sexual abuse as children by running away to the arcade, and later the bookies. Now young people are choosing to escape online.

Last year, 355 people attended the national problem gambling clinic. At least half the patients have family histories of problem gambling. Early intervention can make a difference, Bowden-Jones says: We know that high levels of impulsivity at the age of seven are already a predictor of potential problems with gambling in adulthood.

But getting help to those who need it most is difficult: patients and their families need to refer themselves to the clinic, and many of the youngest problem gamblers will be hiding it. While older problem gamblers are treated in groups, young people are given individual cognitive behavioural therapy. The aim is to completely stop gambling and never start again. Once a problem gambler, always a problem gambler. The prognosis can be good, but you need to be abstinent.

There is therapy for parents, too. Some young people are emotionally abusing their parents because they want money, Bowden-Jones explains. They will call in the middle of the night saying they have been hurt and they need money for medication. The clinic offers parents strategies so they can ensure children are fed and have their rent paid, without giving them cash that will feed their addiction.

While she is careful to say that there is a lack of research on the link between gambling disorders and suicide in the UK, she knows how serious the problem can be. In the last couple of years, we could discuss 12 cases at our weekly meeting and 10 of them would be suicidal.

So Im recently 18. Ive never had a job, reads Josh Joness post on the Student Room online forum. Recently (last 8-10 months) Ive just been consumed by gambling. Started with house games of poker for 5 here, 10 there. Now Ive lost over 1,000 Im scared for my sanity. I still just really want to play poker as I am confident now that if I had $500+ to play with I could make a living from it Doing maths at Bristol (grades permitting) as of October Is it legal to gamble your student loan?

Seriously, seek help for that gambling addiction, someone replies.

But Josh is insistent. I am trying to train to be a professional poker player Now Ive improved a lot Im out of money to play with.

The final message is brief, and blunt. And now Josh Jones is dead. Suicide due to his addiction, aged 23. Give up all of you. From Joshs mum.

I speak to Joshs parents, Kim and Martin, in a video call from their home near Swindon. Josh was the middle son of three. Theres no history of gambling in their family. They are both retired engineers, and used to looking at things with a kind of logic that makes problem gambling particularly bewildering to them.

He was the life and soul of the party, Kim says. Very gregarious, outgoing, intelligent. He probably thought he was more intelligent than he was, in terms of gambling.

Josh played football and captained one of the university hockey teams. He was also a musician. Basically, his life growing up was fulfilled. He wasnt sitting there playing on his computer, Kim frowns. He was really happy.

Martin and Kim found out about Joshs gambling when he was 17 they got a call from his school. A member of staff overheard him in the canteen boasting to his friends about how much money hed gambled with or how much hed won, Kim says.

Josh was gambling at night, on the laptop they had bought for his homework. A few early wins at online poker led him to believe he had a talent for it. His real talents for academic work and music were quickly subsumed by gambling.

He didnt get the grades he needed to go to Bristol, after all (Im a gambling addict who totally flunked the summer exams with no revision, he admitted in an online post) and instead studied maths at the University of Surrey. Within his first week as an undergraduate, he had lost his grant for the whole term.

His parents drip-fed him 20 here and there, enough that he could eat but not enough to gamble. They took over control of his bank account. They installed software to block gambling sites from his computer. Then Josh began to take out payday loans and visit casinos.

He lost in the order of 3,000. Its not about the money. I think, in the end, its embarrassment and shame

Josh told his parents the compulsion to gamble was almost unbearable. He would describe lying in bed, sweating, shaking, physically trying not to hit the button again, not to go back on the gambling site. To me, thats describing almost exactly a drug addicts cold turkey, Martin says. You can tell how deeply embedded in his brain it was.

They encouraged him to get help. He had counselling at the student health service, and in his third year, referred himself to the adult problem gambling clinic in London, where he had about a dozen CBT sessions. Although we felt it helped to some extent, it didnt stop him, Martin says. They eventually paid for private hypnotherapy at a Harley Street clinic. After about the fourth session, he gambled on the way home. And he said to us, You may as well save your money, its not doing any good. He just couldnt stop.

On 30 July 2015, Josh took the day off work to gamble. It was payday: he had earned 2,500 from his graduate accountancy job, plus a 1,000 bonus for the year, and he had worked out how to access his bank account. He owed people money and was convinced he could win everything he needed to pay them back. And he lost it, Martin says. He lost in the order of 3,000, and thats what caused his death. Its not about the money. I think, in the end, its embarrassment and shame.

When the police knocked on Martin and Kims door at 2am to break the news, they were not surprised. I knew what they were here for, Kim says. For months, wed been living under this cloud, waiting for this call.

Like the Ritchies, the Joneses are convinced their son was killed by his gambling addiction. Weve got absolutely no doubt whatsoever, Martin says. The government, the Gambling Commission and the gambling industry are jointly responsible for his death not only his death, but the death of hundreds, and the harm of hundreds of thousands.

The gambling industry funds projects intended to protect children from gambling. GambleAware is funded by a voluntary levy on the industry, which came to 10.5m in the year from April 2019 to March 2020 a tiny fraction of the 1.5bn spent on marketing. GambleAware funds GamCare, which operates the National Gambling Helpline, and has run a youth outreach programme in schools and youth clubs.

We run interactive workshops that provide information about exactly what problem gambling is, raise awareness of what is available and help young people make better choices, says Megan Pengelly, a programme manager for GamCares risk reduction projects. Were not going in, wagging the finger at young people. Were trying to stimulate conversation around different attitudes towards gambling and providing some accurate information. Pengelly says GamCare takes great pains to insure they work independently of the gambling companies that fund them.

We hear young peoples experiences and attitudes in our interactive sessions. There tends to be a polarisation: at one end of the spectrum, you have young people who may be a bit laissez-faire about problem gambling, who are not that worried about it maybe they have parents who gamble and dont see it as a risk. At the other end, interestingly, you have young people who are fairly moralistic, who, at that time in their life, are very resistant to the idea of gambling. From our point of view, both ends of the spectrum are at risk. Young people who are judgmental of people who gamble their attitudes will change; theres a risk in that they might have an increased chance of experiencing shame or reluctance to seek help, she says.

Bowden-Jones also goes into schools to talk to sixth formers. They form long queues and ask you questions about whether they are doing it too much, so clearly there is a need there. But she fears the message is not yet getting to 13 to 16-year-olds.

The gambling industry likes to emphasise individual responsibility. Its slogan (When the fun stops, stop) suggests that stopping is a straightforward choice that every individual can make. When I ask Bowden-Jones who is responsible for Britains child gambling addicts, she choses her words carefully. It will be a mix of things. We, as a country, are allowing children too much exposure to gambling. The close connection with sports and gambling is an issue, the advertising is an issue, the marketing is an issue. Age verification is a very big issue.

But parents need to take an active interest in what their children are doing online. We know from research that people who have problem gambling issues tend to have less parental control.

Of course, parents who have lost children despite every effort to monitor their spending and online activity see it differently. The Gambling Act needs to be revised. It needs to be focused on preventing gambling harm not reducing it, Martin says.

I think its potentially like the opioid scandal in America, Liz says. Youve got very addictive products being portrayed as safe. Youve got a legal product thats generating a pool of addicts, particularly in the young. She sighs. And its bereaved families who are always at the prow of the boat somehow.

Labour must hold the government to account for gambling with lives and jobs – LabourList

After months of closure, pubs and restaurants opened their doors on July 4th following the earlier reopening of non-essential shops. Although welcomed by most Tory backbenchers, these reopenings are still an enormous gamble for the government as Britains rate of Covid infection remains higher than nearly all other European countries. While data from the EU shows that most countries have only seen localised outbreaks of Covid after easing lockdowns, the story from America is completely different. The US is seeing record numbers of daily cases, which are now beginning to translate into higher hospitalisation numbers and ultimately deaths. Britain could go either way.

If the governments bet does not pay off, the consequences could be dire. A nationwide rise in the level of infection will need to be met with a nationwide return of lockdown measures, or risk thousands of further preventable deaths. A return of stricter measures would obviously hit hospitality and retail businesses, which may have to close again as they have done in Leicester, but it would also blow a huge hole in public confidence that no number of half-price restaurant vouchers will repair. A second wave would be a tragedy for public health, but also for the economy and jobs.

The governments calculation in taking such an enormous gamble must be that it believes it can avoid blame if it goes wrong. Its rebuke to those who questioned the wisdom of re-opening has been: we are trusting the public. But this pushes the accountability for preventing a second wave onto the public, and sets up ordinary people to take the fall if they do not to behave responsibly. A recent poll for JL Partners suggests that 59% of the public would put the blame on people not following lockdown rules as opposed to only 33% blaming the government. The primary duty of any government is to keep its citizens safe, but Boris Johnsons administration has not provided the right infrastructure or messaging to enable Britons to adequately protect themselves.

At the beginning of the crisis, it was clear that people should stay at home. But since this instruction was abandoned in favour of the more ambiguous stay alert, government communication has become more confused. Professor Susan Michie, director for the centre for behaviour change at UCL and a member of the governments SAGE committee, said: We need clear, coherent and consistent messaging. Despite months of criticisms of poor government communication by professionals and public alike, this is still not being achieved e.g. Johnson and Michael Gove recently giving different messages on face masks to the media instead of giving clear advice directly to the public.

The messaging around the governments test and trace system is equally unclear. There is a widespread assumption that its main purpose is to find out where the virus is. In fact, the system is designed to prevent transmission of the disease. Although those who have symptoms of Covid-19 should already be in isolation, we know that people are at their most infectious a few days after they have caught the disease but before they become symptomatic. Test and trace is designed to find the close contacts of infected people and ask them to self-isolate so that if they do have Covid but are unaware of it, they will not be out in the community and potentially spreading the virus further. But many people remain unaware of the need to get tested if they develop symptoms, and self-isolation of contacts is voluntary. Astonishingly, the government does not even publish the number of people who are isolating, despite this being the main aim of the system.

Director of the clinical operational research unitat UCL professor Christina Pagel, who is part of Independent SAGE, told me: The weekly government report on its test and trace results shows that the system is still far from world beating and, more concerningly, there is little evidence of any improvement since the start of test, trace and isolate (TTI) five weeks ago. There seems to be no plan to address this and the government, which once boasted of having a world class system in place by June 1st, barely mentions it anymore and had to abandon their app.

She also warned against the rapid re-opening of the economy. It seems to be taking about four weeks to see the impact of loosening restrictions on new cases, she explained. So phases of opening should be widely spaced apart to make sure new infections are under control before loosening restrictions further. The less effective your TTI system, the longer you should wait between opening phases because you cant be sure that you are catching outbreaks quickly. The government is currently waiting two to three weeks between reopenings gyms are the fourth major relaxation since schools partially reopened at the beginning of June. We dont have a great TTI infrastructure and so I really think the government needs to slow down the reopening.

As Professor Pagel noted, it takes time for the effects of looser restrictions to be seen in the data, so if there is little change in the numbers dying from Covid in the next few weeks, we should not necessarily be congratulating the government on getting it right. This is particularly true because evidence from America suggests that new infections are occurring disproportionately among younger people who are less likely to be seriously ill. However, young people do not live in hermetically sealed bubbles and eventually are likely to pass the virus onto those who are more vulnerable.

If infections do start rising, it is vitally important the government is held to account for taking an irresponsible gamble with peoples lives and jobs. The JL Partners poll showed that older people in particular are likely to say they will blame the public rather than politicians for a rise in infections. This hands the Tories an opportunity to fan the flames of an intergenerational conflict between irresponsible young people and the elderly. Johnsons recent attempts to hold care workers responsible for the devastating outbreaks of Covid in care homes show how quickly the government will resort to blaming others. Labour needs to be at the forefront of rejecting the misleading and divisive narratives that the government will almost certainly try to deploy.

The Brave New World of Peacock Looks a Lot Like TVs Past – PRIMETIMER

Peacock Original A Brave New World (center) will live alongside classics from the NBCUniversal library, including Saturday Night Live and The Office, which hops over from Netflix in 2021.

The official launch of Peacock today marks the fourth high-profile streaming service to debut in nine months. Disney+ had a fantastic launch, and the July 3 debut of Hamilton has kept its momentum going strong. Less fantastic was Apple TV+, which has had a few nice shows but seems to mostly be a vanity line for celebrity fluff. Somewhere in between these two is HBO Max, which has the advantage of HBO but has also created a lot of brand confusion, since it has a ton of content that isnt HBO at all.

Peacocks launch wont be perfect, either. For one thing, as I write this, it hasnt worked out a deal to be carried on either Roku or Amazon, which between them serve 80 million U.S. households. (Neither has HBO Max.) There's also some potential for confusion because Peacock has decided to offer three tiers free, premium with ads, and premium without ads. Peacock Premium with ads is $4.99/month, without ads $9.99/month except if youre a Comcast customer, in which case ad-supported Peacock Premium is free. Got that? If not, my colleague Josh Zyber has more in his Peacock primer.

I honestly doubt cost is going to be much of a barrier to entry. With the great cord-cutting transition now in full swing, streamers like Peacock which is owned by Comcast NBCUniversal are going to make it worth your while to check out what they have and hope its enticing enough to keep you from cancelling your free trial. To that end, Peacock Premium has been making some aggressive deals in recent weeks to beef up its library. A bunch of ViacomCBS content was licensed, meaning that Peacock will be the first major streamer to carry Yellowstone, the one essential TV dramathat until now wasonly on cable. And just last week Peacock announced it will be giving a sports-starved world 1,500 hours of Premier League football matches this season. Its not the Olympics, but its not Korean baseball either.

Thats in addition to the 20,000 hours already on Peacock Premiums shelf: The Office (which arrives on the service in January 2021), the non-blackface episodes of 30 Rock, all the Law & Orders, all the Kardashians, Jimmy Fallon and Seth Meyers three hours before they air on NBC, quality blockbuster films like E.T., The Fast and the Furious, The Godfather trilogy, Jurassic Park, and much more.

Last but certainly least, it will have a slate of Peacock Originals, starting with Brave New World, a limited series that begins today. Lets be clear nobody buys a streaming service for the originals. Even after the sensational debut of The Mandalorian, I read comments online like, After the seasons over, Im cancelling. Hamilton, which I look forward to enjoying with my grandkids this weekend, is three hours long. People need more than one or two reasons, preferably several hundred, to keep a streaming service because its way too easy not to.

Peacock doesnt have a killer show like Mandalorian or Hamilton but it does have many distinct yet complementary television brands. They may pale next to Disney+ with its Marvel, Lucasfilm, and Pixar holdings, but Peacocks catalog is nothing to sneeze at. This helps their brand proposition, especially at $4.99 a month. Lets say that while catching up with all the NBC, USA, SyFy, Bravo, and E! shows you never got around to watching, you get hooked on Yellowstone and then you also wind up enjoying Brave New World or the Battlestar Galactica reboot or the Psych 2 movie or even the new comedy from Tina Fey. Add it all up and its a pretty good deal. You might even miss it if it werent there. Thats Peacocks bet, anyway.

Brave New World is a reimagining of Aldous Huxleys classic dystopian novel, and is pretty clearly aimed at the Syfy slice of Peacocks audience. Huxley wrote the book in the 1930s in part as a satire on utopian novels that were popular back then. Books like Edward Bellamys Looking Backward and H.G. Wells Men Like Gods were the Big Pharma fantasy ads of their day, celebrating the role of technology in making everyone healthy and harmonious while downplaying minor side effects like the complete loss of personality, individual freedom, and critical thought.

In the New London of the future, a bureaucrat named Bernard Marx (Harry Lloyd) and an attractive worker bee named Lenina Crowne (Jessica Brown Findlay) decide to hook up in Brave New World this is an event on par with choosing a new flavor of jam and they decide to fly off to the Savage Lands, aka New Mexico, for kicks. Things go sideways there, and Bernard and Lenina are rescued by a free spirit named John (Alden Ehrenreich), who follows them back to utopia. There, John cant believe what hes seeing a rigidly hierarchical society enforced by genetic engineering and mellowed out by mood pills called soma that people pop whenever theyre feeling, well, feelings.

I havent watched all nine episodes, but what Ive seen is pretty true to the novel, with some nudity and F-bombs dropped in to remind you that this isnt basic cable. The ending is different, but its not a jarring, Plot Against America kind of different. With its small cast and heavy reliance on CGI, Brave New World has the look and feel of a modestly-priced Syfy miniseries. It will appeal strongly to some but not to most.

The sheer size and scope of its library tells me that Peacock is aspiring to be more than an Apple TV+ or a CBS All Access (whose future is a bit cloudier now that ViacomCBS has sold Yellowstone and other shows to its rival). And yet, I dont see Peacock trying to grow into the next Netflix or even Disney+. This feels more like the next Hulu an on-demand TV rerun service with some originals and some movies. After all, NBC was one of the original investors in Hulu before Disney took over. Streaming may be the brave new world of TV, but theres still a lot of old-school TV worth watching, and Peacock is betting its worth five bucks a month to you.
