Blockchain in energy: Optimising profits with decentralised trading – Information Age

Jrgen Resch, energy industry manager at COPA-DATA, discusses how blockchain optimises profits within the energy sector

Blockchain could lead the way to a smarter grid.

While some industries have been quick to adopt blockchain technology, the energy generation sector has been relatively slow to embrace the opportunity. Following several successful European projects however, a revolution in energy generation is happening.

Change in the energy sector often requires considered and cautious decisions. This isnt necessarily a negative trait, as it ensures all new technologies are understood with a clear plan on how to integrate them into existing processes. Yet, as we look ahead to the potential future of blockchain in the energy industry, the sector has already taken great strides in accepting this decentralised exchange.

Blockchain is useful in situations where two parties exchange something, whereby frequent trades are governed by a contract. Whether this is the exchange of goods, money or in this case, energy, the same principles apply. Manually writing and signing contracts for each transaction would be very time consuming, so the contracts must be digitalised in a traceable and secure way, without a single point of ownership one main benefit of using blockchain technology.

Use cases for blockchain are getting increasingly common in various sectors, but how can companies achieve a perfect blockchain strategy? Read here

In the energy industry, this can be particularly beneficial for microgeneration. For instance, an owner of a small solar farm may be selling excess energy to their neighbours. Inevitably, these neighbours want a fast and straightforward system to access this energy. Otherwise, they would simply stick with energy from their main utility provider.

Using blockchain, the neighbours can set a price point they are willing to buy the energy for, without the need to embark on complex negotiations or create manual contracts. If the solar farm owner cannot meet this price point, the neighbour can simply take power from their utility provider. This might change the whole energy supply system to a demand-driven concept. In order to give the solar farm owner an overview of the current situation, or reports about how he profited from the negotiations, it will require a SCADA system or at least an HMI. Today, these systems do not speak blockchain, but as soon as the demand rises, they will adapt rapidly.

This flexibility is particularly advantageous in renewable applications in which energy is volatile, like solar farms. Blockchain technology is dynamic and therefore handles such variability. Most importantly from a financial perspective, this blockchain trade is completely isolated from the utility, therefore avoiding transaction fees from a central trader.

There are several European projects setting good examples of using blockchain effectively. Many of these projects focus on the prosumer, a person who consumes and produces a product like the earlier solar farm owner.

Take Elblox as an example. This project, originating in Switzerland, is a peer-to-peer platform that allows producers and prosumers to exchange renewable energy with their local public. Using the platform, those with energy to spare can position themselves in the local energy market, allowing consumers to buy this electricity in just a few clicks.

Using the likes of Elblox, blockchain is revolutionising how energy is generated, stored, bought, sold and used at the local level. As traders do not pay transaction fees to a central trader and the prosumers can act faster to new price situations, profits in the microgrid can be optimised using this method.By creating localised energy marketplaces across the existing grid infrastructure, the conventional energy model may be a thing of the past.

It is hard to predict exactly how blockchain will affect the current energy model of large-scale providers and utility companies.

However, there are suggestions that the technology will prove just as valuable to the utility as it is to prosumers. Energy generation setpoints are currently decided by the grid governor. In the future, governors may also gather information from microgrid blockchain requests and consider this data when defining setpoints.

Information Age talks to Philip Clayson, CIO at SSE Energy Services, to discuss how the utility company is maximising the value of its data. Read here

Theres also uncertainty around the cyber security implications of blockchain. Yet, blockchain has been developed to be secure and uses sophisticated maths, which makes it extremely difficult for attackers to manipulate it. There is no one weak point to attack, which is a huge benefit of decentralisation.

With the technology safe from manipulation, an arguably bigger threat is at the users site. Authentication mechanisms, rather like the ones used for internet banking, may be required for the initial setup of a peer account.

Blockchain is bringing big changes, so it is no surprise the energy industry is lagging behind others in adoption. However, we are already witnessing successful examples of blockchain. Looking to the future, Europe will be on its way to optimising microgrid profits through decentralised, peer-to-peer trading.

How to perfect your blockchain strategy – Information Age

Use cases for blockchain are getting increasingly common in various sectors, but how can companies achieve a perfect blockchain strategy?

What should companies consider when it comes to perfecting their blockchain strategy?

Perhaps best known as the technology behind Bitcoin, blockchain is being implemented in more and more industries. It helps users to gain added visibility from supply chains, as well as providing the benefits of enhanced security and the reduced costs that come with a lower amount of necessary third parties than other technologies. But these advantages fail to be substantial if companies dont perfect their blockchain strategy.

But, what can organisations do in order to ensure that their ventures into this technology are a success? Three experts provided their top tips for perfecting blockchain implementation.

Firstly, much like any new venture into technology, an airtight blockchain strategy should get the entire workforce on board with the idea, ensuring that they are clear on what it is, and what its benefits are.

In the coronavirus era, remote working has become the new normal. Here, six leaders reveal how to empower a remote workforce in the long-term. Read here

Ensure there is a shared understanding of blockchain within your business, and make sure that the team who will execute the project have a strong understanding of how the technology works, including knowledge of what it can do as well as its limitations, said Sukhi Jutla, COO of MarketOrders. This will also help to get management buy-in and support from stakeholders.

Identify where you may have skills gaps in your team and recruit the right skillset to help you build your solution.

Then, you must define the problem dont waste your time boiling the ocean! Instead, take the time to identify a specific business area or process where you think blockchain could create benefits, such as increasing efficiency or improved transactional performance.

Once you have a solution that works you can then start to think about scaling this to other areas of your business.

Blockchain has an array of benefits for a growing number of industries. However, according to Kevin Curran, senior IEEE member and editor of the Journal of British Blockchain Association (JBBA), using the technology to store data could grind your strategy to a halt.

Many people are not aware that a major weakness of blockchain is that storing data or large files on the blockchain is a non-starter as it can barely sustain small strings of text, that simply record a balance transfer between two parties.

Yes, there are new initiatives such as the Interplanetary File System (IPFS) that can provide much of the infrastructure needed for content tracking and attribution as it provides a permanent, decentralised Web where links do not die, and no single entity controls the data however, there is little real-world uptake in IPFS to date.

There is also the immutability of the blockchain which can be an issue when we later discover that a transaction needs amending due to incorrect data this is not a trivial problem.

What needs to be considered when building a solid strategy for getting the best out of all the data at your companys disposal? Read here

Marcus Treacher, senior vice-president, customer success at Ripple, explained how organisations shouldnt rush into implementing blockchain, and must be deliberate in considering how it will benefit customers.

Like any business-transforming technology, blockchain encompasses new models that cannot be built and perfected overnight, said Treacher. It not only needs careful planning and attention, but also a commitment to prove its ability to solve real customer pain-points.

As weve built and deployed blockchain technology from the outset, weve been unflinching in our purpose to transform cross-border payments for the financial services industry ensuring our solution benefits everyone from the clearing bank to the end-user.

Treacher went on to emphasise the importance of getting on the good side of regulators, as past incidents in which companies have done otherwise have proven to be the death knell for developments.

The hyper-focus on solving an industry-wide problem has allowed us to bring regulators, governments and industry players along with us, on every step of our journey to redefine cross-border payments. In turn, this has allowed us to test, adapt, prove and deploy our technologies worldwide on an industrial scale.

Trust is critical in financial services, and new technologies can evoke scepticism from the industry if they are not approached in the correct way. Consider, for instance, how Facebooks Libra whitepaper was met with industry-wide criticism because it sought to circumvent the existing financial services system. Libra was trying to run before it could walk and, as a result, alienated its partners which led to the project inevitably hitting a wall and pivoting altogether.

Ultimately, Libra presents just one example of the importance of working within the financial system and with the regulators who oversee it to ensure responsible and compliant innovation a crucial component to ensuring your blockchain strategy is robust.

Once youve established trust with regulators and industry members, your blockchain strategy can develop naturally.

Is Pope John Paul II worthy of title ‘the great’? – Arkansas Democrat-Gazette

As he began his 1979 pilgrimage through Poland, Pope John Paul II preached a soaring sermon that was fiercely Catholic, yet full of affection for his homeland.

For Communist leaders, the fact that the former Archbishop of Krakow linked faith to national pride was pure heresy. The pope joyfully claimed divine authority to challenge atheism and the government's efforts to reshape Polish culture.

"Man cannot be fully understood without Christ," John Paul II told 290,000 people at a Mass in Warsaw's Victory Square. "He cannot understand who he is, nor what his true dignity is, nor what his vocation is, nor what his final end is. ... Christ cannot be kept out of the history of man in any part of the globe, at any longitude or latitude of geography."

That was bad enough. Then he added: "It is therefore impossible without Christ to understand the history of the Polish nation. ... If we reject this key to understanding our nation, we lay ourselves open to a substantial misunderstanding. We no longer understand ourselves."

This was the stuff of sainthood, and John Paul II received that title soon after his 26-year pontificate ended. But the global impact of that 1979 sermon is a perfect example of why many Catholics believe it's time to attach another title to his name -- "the great."

"The informal title 'the great' is not one that is formally granted by the church," explained historian Matthew Bunson, author of "The Pope Encyclopedia: An A to Z of the Holy See."

"Every saint who is also a pope is not hailed as 'the great,' but the popes who have been called 'the great' are all saints. ... When you hear that title, you are dealing with both the love of the faithful for this saint and the judgment of history."

In the case of John Paul II, mourners chanted "Santo subito!" ("Saint now!") and waved posters with that slogan at his funeral. During a Mass only 13 hours after his death, Cardinal Angelo Sodano spoke of "John Paul, indeed, John Paul the Great."

When he was chosen to succeed John Paul II, Pope Benedict XVI's first words to the crowd in St. Peter's Square were, "After the great pope ..."

Discussions of attaching "the great" to this saint's title were jumpstarted by a recent letter from Benedict XVI that marked the centenary of the birth, in the Polish town of Wadowice, of the man who would become John Paul II.

"The word 'saint' indicates God's sphere, and the word 'great,' the human dimension," Benedict wrote. The term "great" is harder to define, he added, and in the "course of the almost 2,000-year-long history of the papacy, the title 'the great' has been maintained only for two popes: Leo I (440-461) and Gregory I (590-604). In the case of both, the word 'great' has a political connotation, but precisely because something of the mystery of God himself becomes visible through their political success."

In both of those cases, Bunson said, the future of Rome and the Roman world were at risk -- with Leo dealing with Attila the Hun, while Gregory faced the invading forces of the Lombards. Pope Gregory the Great also produced epic works of theology, especially on the liturgy and the work of bishops.

"With that in mind, just look at the dramatic life of John Paul II," Bunson said. "You start with his underground work against the Nazis, then all the ways that he stood up to Communism during the Cold War. Finally, there are his encyclicals opposing the existential threat of postmodernism -- what he called the 'culture of death' -- to the value of the human person."

In his letter, Benedict XVI quoted the famous words of Russia's Joseph Stalin, who asked, considering Europe's future: "How many divisions does the pope have?"

As it turned out, Pope John Paul II was more than a worthy opponent.

"Let us leave open the question of whether the epithet 'the great' will prevail or not," noted the retired pope. "It is true that God's power and goodness have become visible to all of us in John Paul II. In a time when the Church is again suffering from the oppression of evil, he is for us a sign of hope and confidence."

Politicized Science Can Be Deadly; Time to Restore Integrity – Discovery Institute

We are being lied to about everything. That was the entire anguished text of a tweet that struck me the other day. It was from a young woman whose top interests, to judge from her Twitter feed, include the science experts response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

It came on the heels of a remarkable public statement from another young woman, Bari Weiss, resigning her job as a journalist at the New York Times. She explained that she was sickened by the ruling orthodoxy at the newspaper, a predetermined narrative, bullying, online venom, smears, lies, and vicious false labels directed at the ideologically non-compliant.

Yes, she sounded like she was describing the world of academic Darwinism!

Americans are waking up and recognizing a dangerous lack of integrity in science and in the media. At a time of crisis, heres what you can do make a positive difference.

Imagine there was a pandemic and a great number of people found themselves greeting statements from scientists, conveyed by the media, with increasing jaded skepticism. In fact, the media at this moment worry about Americans not trusting the experts about COVID, whether regarding mandatory masks or about the fantasy land of a forthcoming return to normalcy, as a reporter for The Hill sneered.

Now imagine that, perhaps, what those scientists say really should be believed. Finally theyre telling the truth but half the country wont believe them. The cost in lives could be staggering.

People distrust the experts because large swaths of science and the media have traded truth for advancing an ideological agenda. Were numb to what they tell us.

Discovery Institutes Center for Science & Culture seeks to restore science to its own credibility. How? By sidestepping the media bullies, to directly challenge the experts. Our heroes are courageous, truth-telling scientists who upset the smug atheism of the intellectual establishment. They ask the most important questions of all: Where does life come from? Why are we here?

Two of our heroes have important books coming out in the fall from Discovery Institute Press. Please, we need your help us to publish, distribute, and publicize their work. Biologist Michael Denton arrives in September with The Miracle of the Cell, detailing the ultra-fine-tuned chemistry, down to the level of atoms, without which the first living cell would be impossible. Evolution presupposes intelligent design!

Then in November, look out for biochemist Michael Behe with his new book (not yet titled). One fib told about Behe is that he doesnt respond to critics. Wrong! He has been responding for decades, powerfully, to top ID critics including Kenneth Miller, Richard Dawkins, Sean Carroll, Richard Lenski, and Jerry Coyne. The new book, close to 500 pages, collects his very best replies.

The search for truth lives on. These works explain the evidence for purpose and meaning in life against the cynicism and deception of established science. Please help the world receive this hopeful message at a time when people need it most!

Discovery Institute Press provides vital resources to those searching for the truth about evolution and intelligent design. You are crucial to our success, as you join hands with our writers, editors, designers, and social media promoters to make these books a reality.

Have any of Earth’s creatures stopped evolving? – Genetic Literacy Project

Thegoblin shark, duck-billed platypus, lungfish, tadpole shrimp, cockroach, coelacanths and the horseshoe crab these creatures are famous in the world of biology, because they look as though they stopped evolving long ago. To use a term introduced by Charles Darwin in 1859, they are living fossils. And to their ranks, some have added humans, based on the idea that technology and modern medicine has, for all intents and purposes, eliminated natural selection by allowing most infants to live to reproductive age and pass on their genes.

It may be tempting to conclude from the sharks, horseshoe crabs and other creatures that evolution does often stop, and that Darwins living fossil term makes sense. But such a conclusion would be wrong.

Some argue that Darwin never intended the phrase to be used seriously. The term is over-simplifying and leads to people believing that some things havent evolved, which is so wrong, noted Africa Gmez, a biologist at Hull University in the United Kingdom who led a genetic analysis of the tadpole shrimp that in 2013 demonstrated that this living fossil is no fossil at all. They have been evolving non-stop and speciating and radiating, so why on earth are they called living fossils?

The same is true if one looks closely at the other living fossils. They are all evolving, humans included. This is partially because there is more to biology than meets the eye, with things changing constantly at the cellular and biochemical level. But its also because Darwins watershed discovery, natural selection, known in popular language as survival of the fittest is not the only evolutionary force.

Death prior to reaching reproductive age and lack of reproductive capability are not the only factors controlling biological change. Mathematics also plays a role here. Keep the environmental conditions the same around a biological group, remove selective pressures, but mess with the numbers of individuals in a population, and evolution still happens. Living things evolve, whether you see it on the surface or not.

Natural selection is the best-known evolutionary force and there are numerous examples of it operating quickly in recent times. To illustrate how natural selection works to biology students, teachers and textbook writers typically use examples of creatures with physically obvious changes. Among the more popular is the peppered moth of England. Early in the Industrial Revolution, peppered moths were light-colored. This camouflaged them against the white bark of birch trees around industrializing cities. Over a half-century, as the soot from burning coal in factories darkened the bark of the trees, the moths darkened their coloring too. It happened through natural selection. If youre black moth on a white tree, youre likely to get eaten by a bird, but when the trees darkened, now the dark moths had the advantage.

Another textbook example of natural selection is the high incidence of sickle cell disease in humans in places where malaria is endemic. Malaria and sickle cell disease are both deadly without modern medicine, but to have sickle cell disease one must carry two copies of a gene for defective hemoglobin, one from each parent. Having one defective copy, and one normal copy of the relevant gene however protects an individual from the parasite that causes malaria. But it causes no sickle cell crises, unless the individual engages in extreme exercise, or travels to high altitudes.

The lesson from these examples is that natural selection, due to environmental factors, leads to overt changes, but that a biological status quo should persist as long as everything in the environment remains copacetic.

In the mid to late 19th century, Darwin enjoyed a fair amount of publicity in England, and throughout the world. That publicity was well deserved, but Darwins contemporary, Gregor Mendel, was effectively invisible. Working from a monastery in a region that is now part of the Czech Republic, Mendel made fundamental discoveries about inheritance that eventually would put him in chapter one of every genetics text book. Darwin thought that children were a blend of their parents. But using plant models, Mendel figured out that this was not the case. Rather, he found that traits often disappeared from parents to offspring, only to reappear in future generations.

Early in the 20th century, a British researcher named Reginald Punnett was asking a lot of questions about inheritance to himself and also to his colleagues. Together with biologist William Bateson, Punnett would end up co-founding the Journal of Genetics in 1910. But Punnett also had a mathematician friend named Godfrey Hardy. Together, Punnett and Hardy used to play a lot of cricket, and one day on the cricket field Punnett mentioned that the problem of inheritance might be understood best in light of mathematics.

This led Hardy to publish what was called Hardys Law in June of 1908. It was an algebraic expression showing how the numbers and ratios of genes and traits should stay the same, or shift over time. It would have made Hardy the sole founder of population biology, if not for the fact that somebody else had already discovered it six months earlier. That man was Wilhelm Weinberg, a German physician who had derived a similar equation of population genetics in January, 1908. When this was realized, geneticists began referring to what we now call the Hardy-Weinberg Principle, and an equation by the same name.

The Hardy Weinberg Principle illustrates that there is an equilibrium that is maintained the ratios alleles, alternate forms of each gene remain the same, so there is no evolution if selective pressure is removed, but there are a couple of other requirements. The population must be reproductively isolated (separated from other organisms that can produce offspring with it), and the population must be infinitely large.

If the number of individuals in an isolated, successful population is not infinity, then a force called genetic drift comes into play. Like the increasing chances of getting more heads or more tails as the number of random coin tosses is decreased, genetic drift increases as the size of a population decreases. Other things that happen in nature are founder effects and bottlenecks, both of which you can equate to drawing a handful of gumballs from a jar and ending up holding gumballs with a ratio of colors that differs from the color ratio in the jar, due to the randomness of sampling.

With a founder effect, a small group of individuals gets isolated, and due to chance the ratio of alleles for various genes is different from the mother population. The same is true in a bottleneck effect, which happens when the bulk of a population gets killed off, and due to to chance, the ratio of different alleles in the surviving gene pool is different from what it was in the mother population.

Whereas founder effects and bottlenecks remove diversity from the gene pool of a population, the opposite can happen when migration and other factors bring populations together. Thus, while in the case of humanity, modern medicine and other technologies may indeed be reducing the impact of natural selection, migration and founder effects has been playing a major roles as transportation and other technologies have developed. And these phenomena may play a still more influential role if human colonization of the Moon, Mars, or free space becomes reality. In nature all phenomena that change the gene pool operate in concert, affecting the course of evolution, whether in tadpole shrimp, lungfish, or humans.

Re-usable and sustainable rocket to launch from UK spaceport – Aerospace Testing International

Re-usable rocket developer Orbex has confirmed that its Orbex Prime rocket will be launched from the UKs first spaceport, which is to be built in Sutherland, Scotland.

Scottish startup Orbex was founded in 2015 and is developing what it describes as an environmentally sustainable launch system that will use renewable biofuels.

Earlier this year, the European Space Agency awarded Orbex a contract under itsFuture Launchers Preparatory Programto cover the further development ofreflight, a low mass system which will allow Stage One boosters to be recovered and reused in multiple missions to reduce the use of raw materials.

The Orbex Prime rocket, which will use the reflight system, has its first launch planned for early 2022 at the Space Hub Sutherland spaceport. The rocket will be the first vertical launch vehicle to fly into orbit from the Space Hub, which will be constructed near Melness on the northern coast of Scotland.

The confirmation of the launch comes after the Highland Council in Scotland approved construction of the Sutherland spaceport. Chris Larmour, CEO of Orbex said, This is a landmark in the history of spaceflight in. We look forward to becoming an integral part of the local community as we establish our own permanent team at the Space Hub.

Orbex said that design and development work has continued throughout the pandemic, with its coaxial fuel tank being subjected to ongoing cryogenic testing. The company has also signed a lease to install a new testing facility at the former RAF base at Kinloss, Scotland.

In parallel Orbexs rocket engines have been progressing through a program of increasingly demanding performance tests while avionics and guidance systems are also being ground tested.

The go-ahead for Space Hub Sutherland, combined with the steady progress of the Orbex Prime launch vehicle, are important steps towards the first truly orbital space flight from the UK. The last piece of the jigsaw puzzle is the regulatory framework that will govern launches, and we look forward to those regulations being laid before Parliament in the coming weeks, concluded Larmour.

What Type Of Returns Would China Aerospace International Holdings'(HKG:31) Shareholders Have Earned If They Purchased Their SharesFive Years Ago? -…

While it may not be enough for some shareholders, we think it is good to see the China Aerospace International Holdings Limited (HKG:31) share price up 25% in a single quarter. But that cant change the reality that over the longer term (five years), the returns have been really quite dismal. Indeed, the share price is down 70% in the period. So were hesitant to put much weight behind the short term increase. Of course, this could be the start of a turnaround.

Check out our latest analysis for China Aerospace International Holdings

There is no denying that markets are sometimes efficient, but prices do not always reflect underlying business performance. By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.

Looking back five years, both China Aerospace International Holdings share price and EPS declined; the latter at a rate of 3.6% per year. This reduction in EPS is less than the 22% annual reduction in the share price. So it seems the market was too confident about the business, in the past. The less favorable sentiment is reflected in its current P/E ratio of 4.38.

The image below shows how EPS has tracked over time (if you click on the image you can see greater detail).

This free interactive report on China Aerospace International Holdings earnings, revenue and cash flow is a great place to start, if you want to investigate the stock further.

It is important to consider the total shareholder return, as well as the share price return, for any given stock. The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. Arguably, the TSR gives a more comprehensive picture of the return generated by a stock. In the case of China Aerospace International Holdings, it has a TSR of -66% for the last 5 years. That exceeds its share price return that we previously mentioned. And theres no prize for guessing that the dividend payments largely explain the divergence!

Were pleased to report that China Aerospace International Holdings shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 0.8% over one year. And that does include the dividend. That certainly beats the loss of about 11% per year over the last half decade. We generally put more weight on the long term performance over the short term, but the recent improvement could hint at a (positive) inflection point within the business. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. For example, weve discovered 3 warning signs for China Aerospace International Holdings (1 is potentially serious!) that you should be aware of before investing here.

We will like China Aerospace International Holdings better if we see some big insider buys. While we wait, check out this free list of growing companies with considerable, recent, insider buying.

The West Toronto Railpath is the city’s hidden urban trail next to the train tracks – blogTO

The West Toronto Railpath is a rare corridor that makes traversing Toronto's industrial west end a breeze.

Made just for walkers, joggers, and cyclists, this scenic 2.1-kilometre trail cuts through the Junction Triangle.

Both the Dupont and Bloor Street bridges are clearly demarcated as part of the West Toronto Railpath.

It runs down from Cariboo Avenue, just north of Dupont, and heads southalong the GO Train rail corridoruntil Dundas Street and Sterling Road.

You can enter through a number of connectivity points(off Bloor, or the path behind Osler Fish Warehouse, or adjacent to Henderson Brewing, to name a few) to access this special asphalt trail.

There are nine main entrances along the 2.1 kilometre trail.

The Junction Triangle has never felt particularly inviting to pedestrians, in large part due to the fact it's an area shaped by railway tracks, ongoing construction, and the remnants of old factories.

This linear asphalt path is a paradise for pedestrians and cyclists.

But on the WTR, the urban essentials railways and bridgescome together against a backdrop of greenery and graffiti that shows Toronto's adaptive ecology at its best.

The WTR runs directly next to the GO train corridor.

The railpath was established in 2009, at a time when the Junction Triangle (or The Wedge, as some thought to call it,before the Fuzzy Boundaries project banged the gavel) was in its early stages of an identity renaissance.

The occasional sound of trains passing by interrupts the peace and quiet of the trail.

Like the Beltline Trail, another rail-to-trail that uses railroad right-of-ways, the WTR runs on an abandoned line. A mere fence, and at times, graffiti-covered sound barriers, is all that separates commuters from the trains as they whizz by.

The trail was completed in 2009 and runs along an old railroad right-of-way.

Aside from the fact that it gets you efficiently from A to B (it's my favourite detour to all that Sterling Road has to offer), or the direct access to the Bloor GO and UP stations, the trail itself is a sight for sore city eyes.

Graffiti is an essential part of experiencing this urban landscape.

For art in the wild, check for artby DeRAIL, StART, artists like Alexander Bacon andQue Rockford (you can watch a video on the duo's Dupont Street Underpass mural) and Lynnette Postuma (whose 12,000 square-footGradationwall pays hommage to the trees of the trail).

Severalinterdisplenary arts teams are responsible for the muralshere.

The volunteer group Friends of the West Toronto Railpath calls it a "living canvas", which is an apt description of this changing trail.

The graffiti here is as as essential a component as the growth of the shrubs and sumach trees and vines of the path, and you'll find the artwork here shifting to match the zeitgeist.

The Wallace Avenue foot bridge stretches overtop the GO train corridor to Dundas Street West.

Here to stay are four sculptures made from galvanized steel placed along the length of the trail. These pieces by John Dickson range between five and six metres high as part of his project, Frontier.

There is public seating interspersed along the trail, including these Pause Platforms.

Closer to the Dundas exit, there are also three wooden circular seats calledPause Platforms, which sit on top of three decommissioned groundwater pumping wells.

Looking north from the heritage Wallace Avenue footbridge.

One pitstop you should definitely not miss out on is the walk across the Wallace Avenue footbridge: the first project by the Ontario Bridge Company.

Built in 1907, it was originally created as a low-cost, temporary crossing, but is now a historical landmark that provides an uninhibited view of the trains as they travel underfoot.

The Wallace Avenue footbridge was built in 1907.

Biking from north to south takes roughly 10 minutes, approximately, which is simply not enough to satiate most cyclists looking for an urban reprieve.

Phase 2 of the WTR has been a prolonged and painful (for eager pedestrians) process, promising an extension down to Abell Street at Sudbury Street.

An extension of the WTR is expected to lengthen the trail south to Abell Street at Sudbury Street.

There was some movement made in February 2020 with the announcement of a $23 million plan that should introduce four new pedestrian-cycle bridges, connections to Dundas Street West, Lansdowne Avenue, Brock Street, and Queeen Street.

The project is slated to begin in 2021, if all goes according to plan. Until then, a little more than 2 kilometres will have to do.

Monclers latest digital initiative is all about giving fashion creatives a voice – i-D

Its not an overstatement to say that Moncler Genius has revolutionised the way big brands communicate with their audience. Since its debut during Milan Fashion Week A/W 18, the project has not only won its fans hearts, but has also been praised by a number of fashion critics and brand communication experts. The latest Genius drop featured designs by Hiroshi Fujiwara, the so-called godfather of Japanese streetwear, and has garnered impressive results in the Post-COVID-19 market, according to the Chinese publication Jing Daily. Being in the midst of a global pandemic has forced brands to completely reshape their marketing plans for 2020/21. The question: How could fashion face COVID-19 has been asked so many times weve finally got tired of talking about it. And yet, we can learn a lot about how the future is going to look like just by observing how some of the biggest players in the industry are trying to reimagine their existence.

Veronica Leoni for Moncler Voices

Firstly, we shouldnt be surprised by Monclers ability to effectively communicate their projects and, consequently, transforming winter outerwear into highly-wanted and highly-sold luxury pieces. Back in the 50s, Moncler supplied the expedition team that reached the summit of K2 for the first time ever. Thirty years later, it became the staple of Italys youth subculture Paninari, a cultural movement that has in many ways anticipated todays streetwear aesthetic. Fast forward to 2020, and Moncler has become one of the most popular brands in the zeitgeist. This ongoing process is made possible by the plurality of voices that coexist in one single project. As i-D put it, Moncler Genius combines a variety of contributions which are able to coexist alongside one another, creating a mosaic of differences and extraordinary individuality. These varied voices in their distinctive design languages harmonised through a single design process conceived by the brand. Just like all true love stories, the relationship between Moncler and its designers is mutually beneficial, allowing both parts to express something that would have otherwise stayed silent.

Matthew Williams for Moncler Voices

So its no accident that Monclers latest digital campaign is called Moncler Voices and aims once again to give a platform to the people that shape todays fashion system. Following Moncler Chairman & CEO Remo Ruffinis invitation, artists, curators, stylists, designers, directors, athletes, explorers and cultural players will be asked to create an intimate image that portrays the answer to one question: What does Moncler mean to you?. Kicking-off today on Instagram, the campaign will include contributions from Matthew Williams, Jonathan Anderson, Nick Dutton, Hiroshi Fujiwara, Craig Green, Veronica Leoni, Pierpaolo Piccioli, Richard Quinn, Simone Rocha and many others. Each of them has been asked to share a picture that expresses their personal relationship with the brand; it's a visual tool to reflect on the spirit of togetherness, creativity and exploration that Moncler stands for, proving that sometimes its not all about taking immediate action when forced to face a new reality, but rather actively listening to what others have to say.
