The Revolutionary Life of Paul Robeson: Scholar Gerald Horne on the Great Anti-Fascist Singer, Artist, and Rebel – The Intercept

As Donald Trump campaigns for reelection, he is increasingly sounding like a fanatical Cold War relic, railing against the communists, anarchists, and socialists while pledging to protect the real Americans from this growing Red Menace. This week on Intercepted: As Trump vows to smash leftist movements, we take a comprehensive look at the life of the revolutionary Black socialist, anti-fascist, and artist Paul Robeson. University of Houston historian Gerald Horne, author of Paul Robeson: The Artist as Revolutionary, discusses Robesons life from his early years to his time in Europe on the brink of a fascist war. The son of an escaped slave, Robeson rose to international fame as a singer and actor, but committed himself to the liberation of oppressed people across the globe and was a tenacious fighter for the freedom of Black people in the U.S. Robeson was heavily surveilled by the FBI and CIA, dragged before the House Un-American Activities Committee, and was stripped of his passport by the U.S. government.

Audio of Robesons testimony at the House Un-American Activities Committee, used throughout this episode, is a dramatization by actor James Earl Jones in the stage play, Are You Now or Have You Ever Been?

Sean Hannity: Joining us now on the phone is President Donald Trump from the White House tonight. Mr. President, thank you, sir, for being with us.

Donald Trump: Well, thank you very much. And how good is Mark?

[Sounds of toilet]

SH: I want to start Um, Mr. President? We have an election in 117 days, Mr. President, and

DJT: I actually took cognitive tests.

SH: Ok.

DJT: Very recently when I proved I was all there because I aced it. I aced the test

SH: You know

DJT: in front of doctors and they were very surprised. They said thats an unbelievable thing. Rarely does anybody do what you just did.

SH: What is your second term agenda?

DJT: Our country will suffer. Our stock markets will crash. Cases all over the place. People dying.

SH: Thank you for your time. We appreciate you being with us. And 117 days to go. Alright.

DJT: Thank you very much, Sean. Thank you.

[Musical interlude]

Jeremy Scahill: This is Intercepted.

[Musical interlude]

JS: Im Jeremy Scahill, coming to you from my basement in New York City. And this is episode 138 of Intercepted.

Catherine Herridge [CBS]: Why are African Americans still dying at the hands of law enforcement in this country?

DJT: And so are white people. So are white people. What a terrible question to ask. So are white people more white people by the way.

JS: The United States is in the midst of a period of great reckoning. While many major media outlets have moved on in their coverage, demonstrations for racial justice and Black Lives continue in cities and towns across this country.

Protesters: George Floyd! Say his name! George Floyd! Say his name! George Floyd!

JS: At the same time, the pandemic is continuing its carnage, due in no small part to the criminal incompetence of President Donald Trump. While Wall Street celebrates its gains and basks in the perceived contradictions, workers across this country are suffering. Millions of people are at risk of losing or already have already lost their employer-based health care. The paltry means-tested so-called economic stimulus was at its inception an inadequate bandaid, and now the wounds on working families are becoming infected. At the same time, the billions doled out to corporations are shrouded in unaccountability and secrecy.

And, as Trump campaigns for re-election, he is increasingly sounding like an early Cold War fanatic, railing against the communists, anarchists, socialists while pledging to protect the real Americans from this growing Red Menace.

DJT: We are now in the process of defeating the radical left, the marxists, the anarchists, the agitators, the looters, and people who, in many instances, have absolutely no clue what they are doing.

JS: In these times, the long shadow of history stretches over us all. And in thinking of the magnitude of the current world and national crisis, Ive found myself reading books, watching films, listening to music that was produced during times of crisis and struggle throughout history.

[Water Boy sung by Paul Robeson plays.]

Paul Robeson: [Singing] Water boy, where are you hiding? If you dont come, Im going to tell your Mamie.

JS: One of the great stories of the past century is that of the life of Paul Robeson. He was born in New Jersey to a father who escaped slavery. He was an athlete, a lawyer, an actor, and a singer. And his songs propelled him to international fame beginning in the late 1920s and early 1930s.

But Paul Robeson represented something much bigger than his art or his biography. His ascent to fame came as the world was in upheaval, the market crash and the Great Depression, the rise of fascist forces in Europe, and the grinding oppression of Jim Crow America. Robeson spent many of his prime years living outside the United States. He said he felt more free as a Black artist abroad than he did in the land of his birth. He traveled the world performing in the great concert halls and theater venues of Europe and beyond. He was enamored of the Soviet Union and the great hope that he placed in the liberation of Black people from the shackles of colonialism in Africa. He mastered several languages, among them German and Russian, and he gave in London what is to this day considered to be one of the greatest performances of Othello ever staged.

Paul Robeson reciting Shakespeares Othello: Soft you, a word or two before you go. I have done the state some service, and they knowt. No more of that. I pray you, in your letters, when you shall these unlucky deeds relate, speak of me as I am. Nothing extenuate, nor set down aught in malice.

JS: Paul Robeson was an international man of resistance, of worker solidarity, and he was a proud Marxist. He could have lived a life of extreme comfort and luxury. He could have chosen to just be an artist. But at his core, Paul Robeson believed that the struggle to liberate workers across the globe and to overthrow the tyranny of fascists was connected to the liberation of Black people in the United States. And when Robeson was outside of the U.S. or inside of it, he always spoke with an international perspective. After visiting with coal miners in the Welsh valley in the U.K. in the 1950s, Robeson described his political evolution in a radio interview on KPFA.

PR: And I went down in the mines with the workers and they explained to me that Paul, you may be successful here in England, but your people suffer like ours. We are poor people. And you belong to us, you dont belong to the bigwigs here in this country. And so I today feel as much at home in the Welsh valley as I would in my own Negro section in any city in the United States. And I just did a broadcast by transatlantic cable to the Welsh valley a few weeks ago. And here was the first understanding that the struggle of the Negro people, or of any people, cannot be by itself. That is, the human struggle. And so I was attracted then to met many members of the Labor Party and my politics embraced also the common struggle of all oppressed peoples, including especially the working masses, specifically the laboring people of all the world. And that, that defines my philosophy. Its a joing one of, we are a working people, a laboring people the Negro people. And theres a unity between our struggle and those of white workers in the South. Ive had white workers shake my hand and say, Paul, were fighting for the same thing. And so this defines my attitude toward socialism, and toward many other things in the world. I do not believe that a few people should control the wealth of any land, that it should be a collective ownership.

JS: Today on the show, we are going to take a journey through the life and times of Paul Robeson. From his early years to his rise to fame, to his time in Europe on the brink of a fascist war. We will hear how Robeson traveled to the frontlines of the war against General Franco to perform for the international anti-fascist brigades. Well hear of the FBI investigations, Robesons appearance before the House Un-American Activities Committee and of how Paul Robeson was stripped of his passport by a U.S. government afraid that he would become a Black Stalin.

Our guest for todays program is the historian and scholar Dr. Gerald Horne. He currently holds the John J. and Rebecca Moores Chair of History and African American Studies at the University of Houston. He is a prolific author and among his works is the recent book Paul Robeson: The Artist as Revolutionary. Dr. Hornes newest book, just published, is The Dawning of the Apocalypse: The Roots of Slavery, White Supremacy, Settler Colonialism, and Capitalism in the Long Sixteenth Century. Dr. Gerald Horne, thank you so much for joining us here on Intercepted.

Gerald Horne: Thank you for inviting me.

JS: As weve watched these events unfold over the past months, not just with the pandemic, but centrally with the uprisings that weve seen around the country in the aftermath of the killing of George Floyd, I found myself thinking a lot about Paul Robeson.

Dramatization by James Earl Jones as Paul Robeson: Is that when I am abroad, I speak out against injustices against the Negro people in this land. That is why Im here. Im not being tried for whether Im a communist. Im being tried for fighting for the rights of my people, who are still second class citizens in this country, in this United States of America. My father was a slave. I stand here struggling for the rights of my people to be full citizens in this country. And they are not.

JS: Paul Robeson was a militant anti-fascist, a radical thinker, and in your book on him, you say that he was the forerunner to Malcolm X and Martin Luther King, and that in studying his life we can understand better this history that we all continue to live through. For people that are not familiar, just give an overview of why you put Paul Robeson in that historical context.

GH: Well, Paul Robeson was born in New Jersey in 1898, passes away in Philadelphia in 1976. In between, he was a star scholar at Rutgers University, one of the few Black Americans admitted to that state school. He was also an All-American football player and a baseball catcher. He also attended Columbia University Law School and practiced law for a while. But it was soon revealed and discovered that he had a marvelous singing voice.

PR: [Singing] I dreamed I saw Joe Hill last night, alive as you and me. Says I, But Joe, youre ten years dead. I never died says he, I never died says he.

GH: And he quickly transferred to being a star concert singer and a star of the stage, and ultimately film.

PR: Lord God of Abraham, Isaac and Israel.

GH: From the 1920s up through the late 1930s, he was actually in exile. He lived in London. And there he came into contact with many anticolonial leaders. But a turning point in Paul Robesons life comes in the early 1930s, when he comes face to face with fascism as its rising in Germany. And his transition to becoming this stellar anti-fascist activist is assisted in no small measure by his good friend, another Black lawyer, speaking of William Patterson, who went on to spearhead the defense of the Scottsboro Nine in the 1930s. Recall these are the nine Black youth in Alabama who are accused falsely of sexual molestation of two Euro-American women. Their case becomes a cause clbre all over the world. Its not unlike the antiapartheid movement, which in the 1980s and 1990s becomes an international movement. And in fact I argue that the Scottsboro Nine, in some ways, was a precursor and necessary prelude to the eruption of the anti-Jim Crow movement in the 1950s in the United States of America.

In any case, Paul Robeson becomes an advocate of socialism. He visits the Soviet Union early on. The turning point, in a sense, in Paul Robesons life comes with the dawning of what London would call World War II, that is to say 1939. And he felt that with his family he might be caught in the midst of a war so he decided to return to the land of his birth. And for a while it seemed as if he was in accord with main political trends in the United States after all. But alas, with the end of World War II, you see the rise of the Red Scare, the Cold War. Robeson quickly becomes persona non grata. A turning point again in his star-crossed life comes when he confronts President Harry Truman in the White House, when Mr. Robeson is campaigning against lynching the extrajudicial murder of Black Americans, non unlike what befell George Floyd in Minnesota in May 2020.

PR: A very broad committee went in to protest the lynchings of the Negro boys in the South. He said that it wasnt politically expedient to do anything about lynching.

GH: And as Mr. Truman was being berated by Mr. Robeson, therein you can espy the onset of the decline of Mr. Robeson. He quickly becomes blacklisted. He becomes an early victim of McCarthyism. He still has a certain kind of contact with the emerging civil rights movement. I mean, for example, he rubs shoulders with Malcolm X while in London. He confers with Dr. Martin Luther King and some of Dr. Kings representatives. But its fair to say that the final decade of his life is spent generally in seclusion and he passes away in Philadelphia in early 1976.

JS: As Robeson discovers his gift for the performance arts, particularly singing and acting in the United States, and he is given some early opportunities to perform in the plays of Eugene ONeill, what was Robesons life like as he entered entertainment? And ultimately what brings him then to Europe?

GH: After leaving Rutgers, he enrolls in law school and is well on his way to becoming a well-paid lawyer. But like many people, that is to say many Black people in particular, he felt that his individual success was insignificant compared to the kind of relentless Jim Crow and mindless lynching that his people were being subjected to. But, as suggested, he left that particular life and that particular career. And then, in the early 1920s, moving to London on the premise, which proved out, that there would be more opportunities in London for a Black performer than in the land of his birth.

While in London, hes exposed to a number of radical intellectuals when Britain was considered to be a so-called top dog in the imperialist and capitalist world. That process led to the creation of a number of leading anti-fascist, anti-imperialist intellectuals. And this kind of environment influenced Robeson quite deeply and, as suggested, along with his trip to Germany as fascism was being born, helped to move him decisively to the left.

PR: I would say that, unquestionably, I am an American. Born there. My father slaved there. Upon the backs of my people was developed the primary wealth of America. The primary wealth. Theres a lot of America that belongs to me yet, you understand? But just like a Scottish-American is proud of being from Scotland, Im proud for being African. Now in our school books they tried to tell me that all Africans were savages until I got to London and found that most Africans that I knew were going to Oxford and Cambridge and doing very well and learned their culture. So I would say today that Im an American who is infinitely prouder to be of African descent, no question about it, no question about it. Im an Afro-American and I dont use the word American ever loosely again.

JS: In 1934, he travels to Moscow for the first time and Robeson said that, Through Africa I found the Soviet Union. Talk about how that first trip to the Soviet Union really profoundly changed Robesons trajectory.

GH: Well, you know, I find that people in the United States, at least certain elites and certain folks who dont know better, theyve really been able to convince Black people in the United States that everybody hates us. You go anywhere in the world, they dont like Black people. Which, of course, sort of lets U.S. Jim Crow and U.S. apartheid off the hook, lets U.S. white supremacy off the hook because the U.S. is just reflecting these global trends. But of course you dont have to be a historical materialist to recognize that these anti-Black attitudes come out of a particular cultural and historical context.

And if you look at Russia, in particular, a European country that, I think its fair to say, that was not as avid a participant in the African slave trade as some of its Western European counterparts including England and France and Portugal and Spain most notably and not only that but the man whos considered to be the founder of the modern Russian language, speaking of Pushkin, was of partial African descent himself and still is seen as a hero today.

Then theres the rather pragmatic political point, which is that the Soviet Union, at that time, needless to say, was being encircled by a number of antagonists, including imperial London, including imperial France, including Germany. So there was a pragmatic reason for Moscow to try to win favor amongst the colonial subjects of its antagonists. Not to mention those who were victimized by bigotry and racism and white supremacy in the United States of America.

There were many good reasons and many sound historical reasons for Moscow to open its embrace to Robeson. It helped to solidify his already growing attraction to the ideas of socialism. And of course he was not alone in this. This circle included many of the Black intellectuals of that time and this pro-Moscow, pro-socialist attitude is not unusual because Black people were looking for allies against U.S. imperialism and white supremacy. Just like by June 22, 1941, when Germany invades the Soviet Union, the United States is looking for allies. Which is why you have this rapid turn about in the United States of America with regard to its opinion of the Soviet Union. Joseph Stalin becomes man of the year according to Time magazine. You have Hollywood producing pro-Soviet movies, which I think you can still find on YouTube.

[Mission to Moscow clip plays.]

Mr. Davies: I believe, sir, that history will record you as a great builder for the benefit of mankind.

Stalin: It is not my achievement, Mr. Davies. Our five-year plans were conceived by Lenin and carried out by the people themselves.

Mr. Davies: The results have been a revelation to me. I confess I wasnt prepared for what I found here. You see, Mr. Stalin, Im a capitalist as you probably know.

Stalin: Yes, we know youre a capitalist. There can be no doubt about that.

GH: Which presents a vision of the Soviet Union which contrasts with the pre-World War II and post-World War II approach. And of course we all know that after the war ends, these Hollywood creators are then dragged to Washington and grilled as to why they made these pro-Soviet movies.

Newsreel: Investigating alleged communism in Hollywood, the Washington Committee on Un-American Activities has been hearing the testimony of prominent film personalities.

Eric Johnston: The motion picture industry has been accused of putting subversive and un-American propaganda on the screen. We deny that without any reservation. The pictures themselves are complete proof of its falsity.

GH: Of course, the answer was that Franklin Delanoe Roosevelt suggested that this was a good idea in order to massage U.S. public consciousness so that the U.S. population would be more prone to go along with this alliance with the Soviet Union against imperial Tokyo and fascist Berlin.

And so Robeson was part of that overall political environment. The difference is, is that after 1945, the U.S. did a 180 degree reversal with regard to its pro-Soviet attitudes. Robeson chose not to, not least because the Soviets were still supporting African liberation movements. Now this rather simple political historical understanding, its oftentimes difficult for whatever reason for many of our friends in the United States to grasp.

PR: For the first time, as I stepped on Soviet soil, I felt myself a full human being a full human being. So its unthinkable for me today that colored peoples in any part of the world would ever join a war or attacks upon the Soviet Union. Im an anti-fascist and I would feel perhaps that any war against the Soviet Union would be a fascist war. Why not talk about peace and friendship with the Soviet people.

Journalist: What are your political opinions? Have they been changed today?

PR: My political opinions about the Soviet Union have only been deepened. As I said, in the Soviet Union, Im a believer in socialism and I would say with Dr. Du Bois that I believe that the socialist lands, in the sense of the Soviet Union, China, and the peoples democracies are the hope can I repeat it? the hope for the future.

JS: Part of history that I think is so vital that people understand but its almost never talked about, is the Spanish Civil War that preceded Hitlers war of conquest and genocide throughout Europe and eventually extending elsewhere. But you had, from the United States just as an example, three thousand people who signed up under the auspices of the Abraham Lincoln Brigade people who were communists or anarchists, socialists that went to Spain to fight against the rise of fascism. And, in fact, the United States officially declared itself to be neutral. And as you write about, Paul Robeson himself goes to the frontlines in Spain to perform for the anti-fascist forces that really were at the vanguard of trying to prevent fascism from taking hold in Europe.

PR [Singing]: But your courageous children. But your courageous children.

JS: Talk about that episode and why Robeson decided to go to Spain to perform on the front lines for the anti-fascists.

GH: Robeson was not alone in terms of those sentiments in favor of the Republican regime in Spain that was being challenged by the ultimate victor, the proto-fascist Francisco Franco who, as you correctly suggest, was backed by the fascist powers. But not only backed by the fascist powers, Berlin not least, but also, you may recall, that Henry Ford, one of the top manufacturers, as theyre called in the United States and his eponymous automobile company is still with us. And so on the other side of the ledger, not only had Robeson, who went to Spain to sing before the beleaguered forces and troops, but Langston Hughes, who was perhaps the leading Black writer of the 20th century was also a part of that crew that descended on Spain.

And, interestingly enough, a number of Black Americans whose names sadly have been lost to history, they were sufficiently motivated to go to Spain as well because, like Robeson, they felt that if fascism could be defeated on the Iberian peninsula that that would bode well for its close cousin, Jim Crow, being defeated on these shores. And likewise, if fascism were to emerge victorious on the Iberian peninsula, this would give a shot in the arm to its close cousin, speaking of Jim Crow, on these shores. And so thats what motivated Robeson to go to Spain in the 1930s. Like his trip to fascist Germany, like his trip to the Soviet Union, this had a catalytic and a positive impact on his emerging anti-fascist consciousness and was one more factor that was pushing him steadily to the left.

JS: Yeah, I wanted to read a quote that you cite in your book from Robesons own description of why he travels to Spain to perform for the anti-fascist forces.

PR: I am deeply happy to contribute to this cause of Spanish culture and of the Basque children in particular. A cause which must concern everyone who stands for freedom, progressive democracy, and for humanity. Today, the artist cannot hold himself aloof.

JS: He said, Every artist, every scientist must decide now where he stands. He has no alternative. There is no standing above the conflict on Olympian heights since, the artist must take sides. He must elect to fight for freedom or slavery. I have made my choice. I had no alternative. When Robeson was asked why he said because, The history of the capitalist era is characterized by the degradation of my people. Put that in context.

GH: I still get chills when I hear that quote being rendered. Obviously hes referring to the origins of capitalism itself, something Ive dealt with in a number of books, including my most recent book, The Dawning of the Apocalypse, which deals with the 16th century. And as Karl Marx himself put it, capitalism comes upon the world stage dripping with blood with the blood of Africans in particular because it was the African slave trade, one of the most profitable enterprises known to humankind. As you know, the African slave trade was the precursor for bringing millions of Africans to these shores, including my ancestors, Im afraid to say. And after suffering through centuries of slavery, we were able to create conditions that led to a U.S. Civil War, culminating in 1865, and then we were then degraded by a century further of U.S. apartheid in this so-called land of liberty and land of freedom. So this is what Robeson was making reference to when he made those rather scalding comments about what was happening to Black people, what was happening to his people.

JS: Tell the story of how Robeson was impacted by the case of the Scottsboro Boys. This starts in 1931, where you have nine Black teenagers ranging in age from 13 to 19 years old who are falsely accused of raping two white women on a train.

Clarence Norris: The three of us were surrounded with a mob. They had shotguns, pistols, sticks, pieces of iron, everything. The crowd commenced to holler: Lets take these Black sons of bitches up in here and put em to a tree. I did thought that I was going to die.

JS: Maybe set the Scottsboro Boys case and Robesons response to it in context.

GH: These nine Black youth are riding trains in the middle of a collapsing economy. It was quite common for folks to hop on trains to get from a city of unemployment to a city where they hoped there would be employment. These two women are riding the train too. There are controversies and confrontations between the nine Black youth, all from Dixie, and the two women. It leads to this allegation that turns out to not to be accurate that they had sexually molested these women. What happens is that the aforementioned William Patterson, who becomes a leader of the International Labor Defense, in many ways they take up the banner of the Scottsboro Nine. They use this case to illustrate the frailties, if you like, of Jim Crow, the noxious nature of white supremacy. Because the International Labor Defense has an international network, because the Communist Party and the Communist International, headquartered in the then Soviet Union, that is to say speaking of the latter, its part of an international organization. And so when this Communist International and International Labor Defense take up this case, theyre able to generate a worldwide movement against U.S. Jim Crow.

James W. Ford: It is only the Communist Party, which day in and day out, fights for every demand and need of the Negroes in the terror-and lynch-ridden South.

GH: Because of the disadvantageous conditions that Black Americans face in the United States of America, historically Black Americans have needed international solidarity and international support to make a step forward. And fortunately that was present in the 1930s. Now, it turns out that it takes quite a bit of activism to free the Scottsboro Nine. For most of the 1930s, despite this international protest, picketing at U.S. consulates and legations and embassies all over the world, boycotts of U.S. based corporations, etc., they still spend most of the 1930s in prison. But eventually, they are not executed because they were definitely slated to be executed, which, I might say, was the fate of too many Black people, that is to say being accused falsely then either rushed to the electric chair of the gas chamber or dragged unceremoniously from the prison and lynched, that is to say murdered without due process of law. But fortunately that fate did not befall the Scottsboro Nine and it also, I should say, not only helped to give U.S. imperialism a black eye in the international community, it also helped to drive many Black people into the ranks of the U.S. Communist Party, including a number of its leaders. And certainly it was a factor in helping to bring Paul Robeson closer to the U.S. Communist Party. I should say at this point that in his testimony before the U.S. Congress in the 1950s, the interrogators said that he was a member of the U.S. Communist Party under a false flag, under a false name. He denied that. I guess because they were not expert interrogators, they did not ask him if he had been a member of the Communist Party of Great Britain, and I suspect that he was. And in any case that remains an avenue of research that has not been fruitfully explored.

Unidentified Actor as Richard Arens: Are you now a member of the Communist Party?

James Earl Jones as Paul Robeson: Oh, please, please, please.

Unidentified Actor as Richard Arens: Please answer, will you, Mr. Robeson.

James Earl Jones as Paul Robeson: What is the Communist Party? What do you mean by that?

Unidentified Actor as Richard Arens: Are you now a member of the Communist Party?

James Earl Jones as Paul Robeson: Would you like to come to the ballot box when I vote and take out the ballot and see?

Unidentified Actor as Richard Arens: Mr. Chairman, I respectfully suggest that the witness be directed to answer the question.

Unidentified Actor as Chairman Francis E. Walter: You are directed to answer the question.

James Earl Jones as Paul Robeson: I invoke the Fifth Amendment and forget it.

Unidentified Actor as Richard Arens: I respectfully suggest the witness be directed to answer the question.

JS: Robeson is in Europe and he returns to the United States not just completely in the grips of the Jim Crow politics and reign of the leaders of the time, but also the FBI begins to investigate Paul Robeson as well. His activism is escalating during this time, and you had fears among powerful white interests in the United States that Robeson was going to become possibly a Black Stalin. Explain that.

GH: Historically, many Black people have fled the United States and have found homes in Western Europe in particular. But what happens is that with the rise of fascism and Hitler and Mussolini taking over most of Europe, they are not, shall we say, as friendly to these Black exiles as previous governments had been. And so many of them end up in concentration camps. Many of them perish. And this is what Robeson feared would befall him and so he decided the better part of wisdom was to get out of dodge, which actually made good sense.

But as already noted, he comes back to the United States and the United States is in the process of shifting to antifascism, shifts out of antifascism almost simultaneously with the signing of the treaty of surrender on the battleship Missouri in September 1945, as Japan surrenders. And then what happens is that this is taking place at a time when the United States is still officially a Jim Crow country. Its still an apartheid country. The United States is a rigorously segregated society. But the flipside of that is that in some ways this hands the Black community on a silver platter to those who profess antiracism, which was quite unusual at the time. And so what happens is that Robeson has a certain modicum of popularity in the Black community. And this is at a time, too, when the left had not been purged from leadership of unions. Robeson in many ways was the titular leader, not only of the Black radical, or even Black progressive movement, but in some ways, a leader of the U.S. progressive movement as well. And it was felt by those who majored in hysteria that somehow this would catapult him into a leadership role in Washington where he would become the so-called Black Stalin that is ruling the United States, subjecting his political antagonists to labor camps and even worse. And this was part of the hysteria that gripped the United States at that moment. What unfolds is this rather adroit maneuver by U.S. ruling circles whereby those with foresight and vision, such as Robeson, Du Bois, et. al., are marginalized and, to a degree, are isolated. And at the same time you have this attempt to erode Jim Crow, per the Brown vs. Board of Education Supreme Court decision of 1954 saying that U.S. apartheid now is unconstitutional. And so you have this anomaly where Black people somehow, at least on a formal level, procedural level, get the right to eat in restaurants that they had been barred from, but because of the weakening of progressive unions and most Black people are working class and survive and are able to thrive because of being part of unions but because of the weakening of unions, they dont have the money to pay the bill at the restaurant.

JS: We are speaking to Dr. Gerald Horne of the University of Houston. In a moment, were going to continue this conversation by taking a look at the U.S. governments investigation of Paul Robeson during the Red Scare period as the Cold War was intensifying. Stay with us.

The Ascension On Cosmic Wasteland, Leaving Money On The Table – Wrestlezone

Big Kon and Vik, formerly known as The Ascension, recently spoke withWrestleZone Managing Editor Bill Pritchard and discussed various topics. The duo reflected on their WWE careers, and two highlights include their reflection on Cosmic Wasteland:

Vik: I know I was excited when we were doing that, you know, because wed already been working with Cody and Dustin quite a bit, and we enjoyed working with them. Codys quite the character and Stardust, it was something else. I know, for us, it seemed like it all fit together really well. We were working with Neville and the Luchas, and doing that, we loved that stuff. I know, personally, I did, but everything in WWE is a struggle.

Big Kon: It looked like a comic book with the six of us, and it made it exciting, it looked good, it was different characters. Cody, you know, with the Cosmic Wasteland, it looked really good visually. We worked on the entrance, and you know, Neville with them looked incredible, too, so and, of course, we can all six go, so it was a payoff. I just wished they would have capitalized on it maybe a just a little bit more.

On why WWE dropped Cosmic Wasteland before they fully capitalized on it:

Vik: I dont even know if we have the answers to that one, in that situation. I know we got left feeling kinda confused at the end of it, so I dont know. If that was, I think that was at the time, too, that kind of, if Im not mistaken, pushed Cody to leave and do what hes doing now.

Big Kon: There was a lot of money left on the table, for sure, with that one. There was money left on the table.

Vik: I mean, its just like odd how, there are so many things, like WWE you just have to fight, fight, fight, fight and sometimes I just, I dont know what the right term is, like it just, stuff gets lost.

Big Kon: Or you just, like, kick a dead horse.

Vik: Its not like were the ones kicking a dead horse, but it is, you know what I mean? And its not by performance, I would say.

Milton teen hospitalized with COVID-19 is now walking, talking and out of ICU – Destin Log

Halene O'Connell, the 16-year-old Milton girl with COVID-19 who was clinging to life on a ventilatorjust eight daysago, has been moved out of the Intensive Care Unit and her family is "cautiously optimistic" she could soon fully recover.

Halenewas moved from the ICU to a regular hospital bed Wednesday evening after her condition improved steadily over the past week, according to her aunt, Carmen Barlianto. She had been in the ICU for a total of 18 days and on a ventilator and in a coma for 12 of those days.

RELATED: Northwest Florida teen fighting for her life against COVID-19; family begs people to wear masks

Yesterday they moved her out of the ICU, which is a huge step, Barlianto told the Pensacola News Journal in a phone interview Thursday. They did a little parade, and it was very emotional for her and my sister (Halenes mother, Carrie OConnell).

GOFUNDME FOR HALENE >>>>

Halene's medical team at The Studer Family Children's Hospital at Ascension Sacred Heart in Pensacola got a pair of red boxing gloves for Halene as a symbol of being a "COVID-19 fighter," and all of her nurses and doctors signed the gloves. She wore them as she was wheeled from her ICU bed to a regular hospital bed.

RELATED: This is a miracle: 16-year-old Florida teen hospitalized with COVID-19 gets off ventilator

She cried a lot moving to the other floor, because shes just beginning to realize all the help that its taken and the dedication from the medical staff for her fight, Barlianto said. It was a very emotional day yesterday for the whole staff, they were all crying.

Halene first began experiencing a fever and nausea on June 22, but doctors initially sent her home without testing her for coronavirus, thinking it was just a bug. However, by June 28, she couldn't even breathe while walking to the bathroom and was rushed to the children's hospital in Pensacola.

Halene's condition was "up and down" every day, according to her aunt. However, she was finally removed from her ventilator July 9and has slowly been coming out of her coma ever since. Barlianto said the teenager has startedto do things like sit up and stand for a few minutes at a timeand can walk about 10 steps before becoming too tired and weak.

She still can't text or use her cellphone, which is "hard for a 16-year-old girl," Barlianto joked.

Mentally, she's also beginning to realize what happened to her, and how close she came to not surviving.

Shes awake and coherent, but she sleeps a lot because she gets tired so quickly, Barlianto said. Shes focused on her physical therapy. Its a process. They just shared with her that she was on such a high setting on the ventilator that they were really concerned she wasnt going to make it, even with her being so young.

Doctors are also continuing to evaluate what the long-term effects of the coronavirus will be on Halene, which could take some time. For now, Halene and her mom, Carrie, who has been quarantined in the hospital with her daughter since day one, are taking things day by day and hoping toreturn home soon.

Halene's father, Robert, and sister, Hailey, haven't seen the teensince she was admitted to the hospital due to visitation restrictions.

Barlianto said the O'Connell family is floored by the outpouring of supportfrom the community and hopes Halene's story can reach all corners of the earth so people can realize what happened to her can happen to them, too. They are still reiterating their pleas for people to wear masks, social distance and wash their hands frequency.

Her story has traveled the world, and we love it. It helps us get through this, Barlianto said. Also, wear your mask. This isnt political. A lot of people maybe have gotten COVID and their symptoms arent as severe, but why even risk it because you just dont know until it hits you, and then its too late. Mask up, its not a big deal.

The Bodice Project: Artists salute spirit of breast cancer patients – The Winchester Star

WINCHESTER A new exhibit at the Museum of the Shenandoah Valley salutes the strength of breast cancer patients.

The Bodice Project features nearly two dozen plaster torsos creatively transformed by artists from West Virginia, Maryland, Virginia, and Washington, D.C. In addition to several painted plaster casts, other sculptures are made of wood, yarn, clay and metal.

Each sculpture is accompanied by a statement from the artist about the person who inspired them.

The Bodice Project all began due to the friendship between Cynthia Fraula-Hahn and Lou Ann Thompson, who have been friends since their girlhood in Frederick County.

Fraula-Hahn, an artist, started the Bodice Project in 2014 after she found out Thompson needed treatment for breast cancer. She created and painted a torso as a way to honor her friend as well as to channel her anxiety for her. Ascension is painted with an allegory of birds and feathers to represent the healing process.

Im a painter. I didnt know what I was doing, said Fraula-Hahn, who now lives in Shepherdstown, West Virginia. But I kind of never do anything in a small way.

Other artists found out about Fraula-Hahns new passion project and wanted to participate.

The sculptures have been displayed in art galleries, at special events including the 2018 National Conference of the American Association for Cancer Research in Chicago and at universities.

After the exhibit closes in November at the MSV, The Bodice Project will go to The Huntington Museum of Art in West Virginia and the Visions Art Museum in San Diego, California.

This show could go anywhere, and Im totally proud of it, said Fraula-Hahn, who made several of the pieces in the show.

Every breast cancer patient has a different story to tell, Fraula-Hahn said.

Artist Christian Benefiel created Network out of wooden lattice to honor his mother, a breast cancer survivor. Fraula-Hahns Big Heart plaster sculpture of a male torso with a mastectomy depicts a physicians assistant who cares for hospice patients and has helped other male breast cancer survivors. Hidden Prayer by Anne Rule-Thompson is an earthenware clay shell that contains an illuminated prayer in honor of a dear friend who is a yoga instructor.

If Fraula-Hahn created that first torso for Thompson as a way to cope with her worries, her latest is simply an expression of her love.

When Fraula-Hahns husband died in 2008, Thompson delivered a moving eulogy incorporating the imagery of a golden thread connecting friends and family.

The torso Fraula-Hahn created just this year and called The Golden Thread is adorned with apple blossoms connected with a golden thread to represent Thompson, who was a volunteer for the Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival for more than 35 years. She served as president of the festival in 2014, the very year she was diagnosed with breast cancer and underwent treatment.

Im really proud of it, so proud of it. Lou Ann was the catalyst and the inspiration, said Fraula-Hahn, giving her friend a hug. And now Im going to need to get a tissue.

For you to remember that golden thread, caught me off guard, said Thompson, who had been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis before she found out she had breast cancer.

The Bodice Project has drawn the attention of local health-care professionals.

Dr. Laura Dabinette, a gynecologist with the Womens Center of Winchester, had know Fraula-Hahn for years and always admired her work. When she first saw The Bodice Project she knew she wanted to help with fund-raising to make sure it could be seen by as many people as possible.

I thought how wonderful it is was to exalt a body that is not perfect, Dabinette said. I believe firmly in the power of art to heal.

Dabinette said 10 percent of her patients have cancer. Through early detection, new treatment options and DNA testing to determine high-risk individuals, the five-year survival rate for breast cancer patients has improved from 60% to 90%, she said, giving her the opportunity to offer hope to her patients.

I am passionate about all my patients, but my patients who have survived breast cancer are nearest and dearest to my heart, Dabinette said.

The MSV is located at 901 Amherst St.

The Bodice Project will be on display until Nov. 1.

Admission to The Bodice Project which includes admission to the special outdoor exhibition David Rogers Big Bugs is $15, $10 to youth (age 1318) and to seniors (60+), $5 to ages 512, free to ages 4 & under, and free to MSV members. MSV gallery admission is always free to ages 12 & under and free to all on Wednesdays; however, these free admission offers do not include Big Bugs.

Along with Dabinett, the MSV display of The Bodice Project was made possible thanks to the sponsorship of Myriad Genetics; Winchester Obstetrics and Gynecology, PLC; Drs. Anita Minghini and Paul Lambert; Shenandoah Oncology, P.C.; Valley Health System; and Tracy Fitzsimmons and J. Knox Singleton.

The Bodice Project: Artists salute spirit of breast cancer patients - The Winchester Star

‘Greyhound’ director says the movie was made without any water – Insider – INSIDER

Gone are the days when movie productions would have to film on a large body of water to tell stories set out in the ocean. But it's still rare not to use any water to make that kind of movie.

Turns out that's what the Tom Hanks World War II high seas movie "Greyhound" (available now on Apple TV Plus) pulled off thanks to a mix of dazzling CGI and game developer tech.

Director Aaron Schneider ("Get Low") admits he's always been taken by the tech side of the business before directing he was a cinematographer for years. But while teaming with Hanks to direct the star's script about an inexperienced US Navy captain (Hanks) whose destroyer leads a merchant ship convoy against German U-boats during World War II, Schneider got to go full-on geek.

Though Schneider and Hanks had been talking about making "Greyhound" since late 2017, the urgency by Steven Spielberg to make "The Post" (in which Hanks plays Washington Post editor-in-chief Ben Bradlee) put things on hold.

That turned out to be a huge benefit for Schneider. He used that time to heavily research the battleships and submarines that took part in the "Battle of the Atlantic," which is what "Greyhound" is loosely based on.

Instead of reading a few books and watching a couple of World War II movies, Schneider built a website of everything he needed to know about US Navy battleships and German submarines.

"Greyhound" director Aaron Schneider. Robyn Beck/Getty

"Pictures, YouTube links, Wikipedia pages, high-resolution Navy archive photographs. I collected all these things and built a research website that was indexed and categorized in a way that as the crew came on the movie, they could take a deep dive into whatever they wanted," Schneider told Insider.

Then he went a step further. The director and a friend flew to Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and took around 10,000 photographs of the retired USS Kidd, which is one of the last existing destroyers still in World War II configuration.

Those photos were then used to create a photogrammetry essentially a 3D model of the entire destroyer. Schneider used the model to figure out where he would place the camera when shooting the movie while keeping the claustrophobic feel of being on a destroyer.

Finally, it was time to shoot the movie in early 2018, but the tech didn't end.

"Every drop of water in the movie is digital," Schneider said. "Anything you see out the window or over Tom's shoulder. In fact, most of the fire is digital, too."

Typically a movie set at sea will at some point have scenes shot in a giant water tank, but that wasn't the case with "Greyhound." The chilly Atlantic Ocean, the thrilling battles between the destroyers and U-boats, and even the ice that builds up outside the ship's pilothouse was all created with CGI.

Thanks to the photogrammetry of the USS Kidd, the production knew the layout of every inch of a World War II-era destroyer. That was vital in how it built the pilothouse and balconies that we see Hank's Commander Ernest Krause character navigate through most of the movie, which was all built on a soundstage surrounded by a green screen.

Those scenes were then matched by CGI shots of the rest of the massive ship.

"Greyhound." Apple TV Plus

To really get the feel that Krause and his destroyer were at sea, Schneider used NVIDIA WaveWorks, a plug-in program usually used by game developers that provides interactive ocean simulation.

"It creates an open ocean and floats an object on the ocean based on the physical mass," Schneider said. "So if I type in the model type of a boat, it will float that object the way it would be on the ocean."

In other words, the program provided realistic blocking for the movie's boats based on real-life physics. The location of the destroyers, merchant ships, and the U-boats and battle sequences were all done through WaveWorks.

"The goal was always to use real physics into believing that this was actually photographed in a real-world kind of way," Schneider said. "If you wanted a big close shot where the ship goes by, well, if you were doing that in real life you could be on a little Zodiac, but a Zodiac floats differently on the water than a big camera ship, so you tell the program, 'float me on a Zodiac' and then all of a sudden the sea is affecting your camera ship much differently but still in a physically real way."

The result is a thrilling 90-minute movie of non-stop battles on the high sea. But as we've learned here, the real bit of movie magic was that Tom Hanks was dry and warm the whole time while filming his scenes.

"Greyhound" is currently available on Apple TV Plus.

Is the President Aware this House is Falling? – THISDAY Newspapers

BY DELE MOMODU

Fellow Nigerians, before the general elections of last year, I thought I had seen enough of the shenanigans of those in power. Things got so bad that I simply gave up. I even vowed to stay on my lane and let the heavens fall on all of us, if it must. Any independent and impartial observer would have concluded that those elections would be neither free nor fair. Any objective Nigerian watching from the inside, and participating, would also have felt the same. Both major parties were guilty of denying the Nigerian people the fair elections they desired, but the major culprit in ensuring the elections were certainly not free was the ruling Party. What we therefore ultimately witnessed was not an election. It was a shambolic, reckless and irresponsible act of crass political brigandage.

The leading political parties prepared for all-out war and it just happened that the bigger rigger won using all the power, force and might of the military, police and security agencies which were absolutely at its beck and call and ready disposal. It was no surprise, given the way the whole farce of an election had been set up, that those who control the appurtenances of power sought to completely obliterate anyone who stood in their paths.

Notwithstanding the shoddy and shameful elections, I was ready to excuse the excesses of the government in the first four years with the hope that once the second term had been achieved, we would hopefully see a government with drive and purpose. I should have known better. A leopard does not change its spots. So, by now, over one year into the second term, it is disgraceful that the leading political parties are yet to settle seriously into the onerous business of governance and indeed, opposition. The opposition has obviously capitulated without as much as a whimper, and the hapless Nigerian citizens are left practically voiceless.

In the first four years of the APC government, it was easy to place all the blame for the failure of the past on the previous ruling party, PDP. No worries. However more than a year into the second coming of the government, the current ruling party has not performed any better. Some would say that its fared even worse especially when you consider the goodwill and sheer weight of expectations that trailed the government when it first attained power.

Im sure those who know how to deceive every government in power would be telling our President that all is well. They would congratulate him on having been able to fix most of the intractable problems of the country and virtually call him the Messiah. It is almost impossible for the President of Nigeria not to be afflicted with the Messianic Complex given the hero worshipping and idolising that goes with the bootlicking that is prevalent and all-pervading amongst our political class. No matter what the praise singers cry and drum out, all is not well in the polity and in our country as I will demonstrate in a jiffy, before offering my suggestions, as always. If after over five years, our country is still tottering, wobbling and virtually on the brink of collapse, the President in particular, and our political gladiators in general, must be told, without any atom of ambiguity, that Nigeria is haemorrhaging to death, at the speed of light. I will now lay out my reasons one by one.

The foundation of any government such as ours is supposed to be DEMOCRACY. Can anyone in good conscience say what we have today is close to that? The answer is a capital NO. The foundation of Democracy itself is FREEDOM. Can anyone say Nigerians enjoy freedom of thought, association and choice in Nigeria today? The answer is NO. The foundation of freedom is TOLERANCE. Has this government tolerated the plurality of the different nationalities and religions that make up Nigeria? The answer is NO. The foundation of tolerance is COMPASSION. Is this government compassionate towards the sufferings and cries of the generality of the people of Nigeria? The answer is NO. The unfolding crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic which the government is clearly incapable of handling with any degree of competence is a clear example of a government that is unserious in the extreme. The people deserve much more than the grave injustice being done to them at the altar of expediency by people who do not know how to handle a simple dilemma not to talk of a major emergency or calamity. The foundation of compassion is HUMILITY. Is our leader humble enough to appreciate the citizens and reach out to them directly, like he did, even if only to a limited extent, during political campaigns? The answer, unfortunately, again is NO. It seems the people have been used, abused, dumped and discarded. Soldiers and civilians are dying like rats and theyve become hidden statistics, because the Government is neither brave nor bold to tell the public the truth. Either as a result of the war against criminal insurgency and banditry in the North East of the country or the nationwide catastrophe caused by the Corona Virus pandemic, lives are being wasted and people are falling like flies that have been sprayed with Shelltox. Even dogs and other pets enjoy obituaries and decent burials in some countries. Not anymore in Nigeria. Shallow graves and unceremonious body disposals as well as mass burials have become the order of the day, yet we are still being kept in the dark about these sad and unfortunate incidents.

Lets now rewind and go back to the issue of Democracy. We are an extravagant lot. The variant of Democracy we chose is not what we can afford. We are operating an American Presidential system which thrives on political and corporate largesse when we have neither of these in our armoury. We are practising Capitalism without capital. We are wasting and frittering away our scarce resources on massaging human parasites called politicians instead of building our infrastructure deficit and servicing our desperate and unreasonable debts. If I didnt have the opportunity of visiting other African countries, I would have thought this is how they all squander their resources. But that is not the situation. Other African countries are more prudent even if there is some corruption in their administration. They certainly are not brazen in the manner in which they go about that sort of nefarious activity. In Nigeria, our politicians actually legitimise their looting by passing legislation to give effect to the grand larceny that they are performing under the nose of the forlorn and wretched citizenry. Our matter is now looking like a curse was cast on us by a spellbinder or sorcerer and the man has since thrown the padlock and its key into the Atlantic Ocean and there is no one to set us free.

Political systems, philosophy, and principles are sustained by ideology. Sadly, we have none because weve kept our country on the spot. We enthrone mediocres, the criminal elements or worse. Some say we are on autopilot and that is what is making us continue as a nation. I dont know about that. What I do know is that we are radarless and rudderless. We have no direction. We are like a shipwrecked vessel on the high seas bobbing and drifting about from one direction to the other, simply surviving because no strong waves have yet come to overturn it and end the misery of the ill-fated souls of passenger and crew.

So, politicians can wake up in APC and go to bed in PDP and vice versa. Lets leave PDP alone for now, they now appear to more composed and comported than APC. Who would have thought that five years ago? The ruling party has become a monumental nuisance, disgrace and unmitigated disaster to our dear beloved country. Barely one year into second term, the APC apparatchik are already positioning themselves for the 2023 general elections. They have thrown caution and decorum to the winds. Thats the basis for the spate of unashamed and unabashed political fisticuffs and brawls ongoing in most parts of the country.

APC started its reign in 2015 with a bad omen. Instead of quickly putting its house in place and getting its acts together, they spent a total of four years pursuing and fighting some parts of the union of strange bedfellows that formed APC. They became so riotously cantankerous that people wondered if they thought they were still in opposition. It was so shocking that a Party that fought so much to attain power could not manage its victory and glory even for a day. The centre had been broken from the first day when they could not even agree on their Principal officers in the National Assembly.

As if it was not bad enough in the first term of this Presidency, the infighting in the seat of power in Abuja during this second term is atrociously unbelievable and abominable. There are factions in the Presidents political and personal families, operating directly under his nose, and he appears to be helpless and hapless. What could be worse than being treated like a lame duck this early in your second term. Im aware that, on paper, the President has been sold many laudable projects that could catapult Nigeria truly to the next level, but unspeakable stealing, perfidious conduct and an irrational war of attrition wont let them ever achieve a meaningful part of them. How tragic.

The main cardinal reasons some of us fell for the Buhari Presidency were as follows. That PDP had overstayed its welcome in power and was speedily leading Nigeria towards Golgotha. Buhari was seen as the last Saint standing who would have the moral right to fight corruption to its marrow and rid us of this cankerworm. That Buhari was antisocial and would curb the excessive proclivity of our politicians for outlandish lifestyles. That Buhari as a retired military Major General would chase Boko Haram and other bandits to the pits of hell and our security challenges would be over. That Buhari would put all the monies saved from different sources to judicious use and good causes. I leave you my readers to reach your personal conclusions on where we are with the expectation and hope. Mine is that our hopes were grossly misplaced and have been unfortunately dashed. I doubt if the NPN and its offspring PDP performed this woefully. Those who wish to bury their heads in sand like the proverbial ostrich are truly welcome to do so. We are at a sorry pass and nothing seems to matter anymore.

My message to President Muhammadu Buhari is that this house built with spittle and dew is collapsing and only a miracle can sustain it any further. The current battle for the soul of the cash cow, called NDDC, is so grisly that this government may not recover from it in a while, if ever. And even worse is the unceremonious manner the former Acting EFCC Chairman was abducted in James Bond fashion in broad daylight and whisked off to the Presidential villa for a phantom investigation by jurists and personalities who should know from past experience that what goes around comes around, while other security agents were busy denying the obvious story. I have no doubt that some people in government have picked on a wrong customer this time. This Ibrahim Magu has been on their wanted list for a long time. They should have muscled enough firepower to remove him during the screening. Once they missed that chance, they automatically turned him into a scorched snake. So, he already knew who his enemies were and has had ample time and resources to plan a rematch and plot the undoing of his traducers and adversaries. Again, they botched it by not finishing what they started very promptly.

I foresee torrents of salacious and scurrilous tales flying around sooner than later. The theatre of the absurd has already commenced in earnest. Fake and false news abound. Social media is agog and awash with moonlight tales of the good, the bad and the ugly. Trust me, it will get worse and uglier! The child who says his mother wont have a good sleep must also stay awake all night. The genies and the worms are already crawling out of the Pandora boxes and cans. I see this house collapsing, like a pack of cards, like a straw hut blown away by the mere breath of the big bad wolf! Corruption is indeed fighting back, but from the inside, and against itself!

The spectators have ordered more popcorns

Scots offered bridging loan to ease Brexit and Covid effect – FarmersWeekly

The Scottish government has launched a 340m loan scheme to help farm businesses cope with Brexit uncertainty and the continuing coronavirus pandemic.

The National Basic Payment Support Scheme loans are designed to maintain cashflow, according to Scotlands rural economy secretary Fergus Ewing.

The scheme provides Scottish farmers access to 95% of their 2020 CAP support and greening payments, to a maximum of 133,638.

A similar scheme in 2018 delivered payments worth more than a quarter of a billion pounds to more than 13,500 farmers after a period of bad weather.

The Scottish government urged farmers to look out for loan offer letters in the coming weeks.

These will be sent to eligible farmers and crofters from the beginning of August, with the first payments due in September, it said.

See also: Expert advice on tendering for a farm tenancy ahead of Brexit

Successful applicants will have access to vital financial support up to three months earlier than the EU CAP payment period.

As the end of the Brexit transition period approaches, farmers will be feeling additional anxiety, so it is essential they have the cashflow they need, Mr Ewing said.

He added that the Scottish government had considered using the EU Advanced Payment system to process CAP basic payments earlier than in previous years.

[But] the Covid-19 outbreak made us reconsider whether this could deliver as much support as quickly as a loan scheme, Mr Ewing said.

We have decided to offer the loan scheme so that farmers can access this support at the earliest ever point, he said.

I would encourage anyone who would like to accept their loan offer to do so by email where they can, to allow us to process these important payments as quickly as possible.

NFU Scotland welcomed the government initiative, which would ease cashflow worries and allow farmers to invest in their businesses amid concerns over Covid-19 and Brexit.

Union president Andrew McCornick said knowing the loan scheme was coming would provide reassurance and help farmers talk to their banks about borrowings.

It also backed up the decision to stick to a 15 May deadline for BPS applications, McCornick said.

The ability for the Scottish government to make what will effectively be advanced payments is testament to claimants sticking to the 15 May application deadline, despite the unprecedented circumstances this year.

I would urge all to opt into this years scheme and to do so by email where possible to ensure payments are processed and made as soon as possible, he said.

Luke Timothy Johnson, Robert W. Woodruff Professor Emeritus of New Testament and Christian Origins at Candler School of Theology, has spent a lifetime writing on the New Testament. If you want to know more about his latest book,Constructing Paul, consider Nijay Guptas interview or Scot McKnights book review.

Here, I wish to connect Johnsons vision of Scripture to the life of the church. Under his supervision as a doctoral student, he taught me how to read Scripture both closely and imaginatively, as an artful skill and spiritual discipline. A significant refrain in Johnsons work is the centrality of religious experience for the interpretation of Scripture. At times, for Johnson, the cumulative weight of human experience contradicts scriptural commands; while for evangelicals Scripture holds the central place of authority over other common sources of theological reflection (experience, tradition, and reason). Yet Johnson has a lot to teach on reading and experiencing ...

We were shouted at for wearing masks. This is why the situation in the US is so dire – Sky News

We were shouted at for wearing masks when we turned up outside Houston City Hall.

We had just arrived to interview a very small group protesting about the Texan governor's decision to make the wearing of masks mandatory to halt the spread of coronavirus.

As others nodded in agreement, protester Oralia Acosta called us "stupid" for wearing facial coverings.

She said we were "pushing the fake news agenda", consequently perpetuating the "feeling of terror" about a disease which they believe is an exaggerated hoax - a view already espoused by Donald Trump.

"Why are you wearing a mask in this heat?" she shouted. "When you pass out, don't ask me for help cos I'm not going to help you.

"It's my right to decide whether I wear a mask or not!"

It is a view which appears to be gaining traction.

This is what public health officials in the US are up against. This is why the future predictions of COVID-19 infection are so dire.

America's Fourth of July birthday bash was a very different affair this year and nowhere more so than in Texas.

Most of the fireworks shows were cancelled and turned into virtual displays. Parades were called off and street parties abandoned.

But despite still recording daily highs in infections, some Texans refused to be cowed by the deadliest virus sweeping the planet today.

We watched as hundreds in Giddings, in Lee County, crowded into an arena to take part in the local holiday weekend bull-riding competition.

Few were wearing masks, despite an order from the governor making it compulsory. Even fewer expressed concern about the virus that has killed tens of thousands of their countrymen and women.

"I'm not worried. What'll happen will happen," said one young woman. "If I'm meant to go, the good Lord will take me."

The Independence Day celebrations are traditionally a time for unity, but the collision of coronavirus and the ensuing unemployment, and the scourge of racism raised by the killing of George Floyd, has put paid to that.

The imploring by public health officials to wear masks, keep socially distanced and preferably stay at home was basically ignored at the bull-riding show.

Dozens of cowboys vied to demonstrate their masculinity and prowess on a bucking bronco to cheers and jeers from the crowd.

The temperatures were well over 30C (86F). Being ordered to wear a mask is uncomfortable in these steamy conditions and viewed by most as, at best, unnecessary, and by some as an affront to their freedom, which this holiday weekend has been all about.

"I'm an American and I feel like I should do what I want to do," one cowboy told us. "I pay my taxes, I live free, I wanna be free."

But in an interview with Sky News, Dr Peter Hotez, who is respected internationally as an expert on infectious diseases, warned that the stubbornness of some Americans to adhere to health advice would only prolong the devastation of the disease.

"We are in one of the worst parts of the epidemic," he said. "The numbers are increasing dramatically.

"This is just the beginning they will double in the next two weeks and then double again the week after that."

He insisted that even the most dire forecast by Dr Anthony Fauci - one of the lead members of Mr Trump's coronavirus task force, who has warned the number of daily infections nationwide could reach 100,000 - could be dwarfed in the coming weeks.

Testing sites appear to be overwhelmed.

At one site in Houston run by a charity, vehicles snaked around several blocks to receive a free test.

Dr Joseph Gathe of the Cure COVID Consortium, one of the lead doctors running the site, says the virus is rampaging out of control in the state.

"And our response is not in an organised fashion," he said. "We can't get the toothpaste back in the tube but we can stop squeezing... and do what we can with those that have not been able to get things done."

The pandemic has wrenched livelihoods from millions across the country and in Texas, everyone we spoke to queuing up for food parcels in downtown Houston told us they were doing so for the first time.

Proud men and women who have worked all their lives and provided for their families throughout their lives, now stung by the humiliation of relying on others to ensure they are fed.

:: Listen to Divided States on Apple podcasts, Google Podcasts, Spotify, and Spreaker

For Charles Moore, who has a Black Lives Matter mask across his face and is wearing plastic gloves, it is difficult to put into words.

"All my life I've been the one to go and get everything on my own and provide for my family and now I have to depend on someone else to feed me," he said.

"So we doing whatever we have to do just to get by another day."

For people like Mr Moore, it is obviously necessary to take extreme precautions for protection, but also to prevent yourself spreading the disease.

But that's not how some see it.

Ethereum-based fantasy soccer game Sorare nets $4 million in funding – Decrypt

Sorare, the Ethereum blockchain-based fantasy soccer game that lets users amass cards based on pro players and compete against each other, today announced that it has raised a $4 million seed funding round.

Led by e.ventures, a global venture capital fund, the oversubscribed seed round also features contributions from new investors Partech, Fabric Ventures, and Semantic Ventures, as well as German pro soccer player and World Cup champion Andr Schrrle (most recently of Borussia Dortmund). Existing Sorare investors, which include Seedcamp and ConsenSys (which, for disclosure, funds an editorially independent Decrypt), also participated.

The Paris-based Sorare plans to use the funding to expand its team as it continues to build out the game experience and add further professional clubs and leagues. Currently, the game has players from 76 professional teams around the world, including Juventus and Atletico Madrid, and it recently added players from throughout Major League Soccer.

People are buying $370 billion of collectibles per year. Sorares mission is to make fantasy football global and rewarding with a new kind of collectibles: digital football cards, said Sorare CEO Nicolas Julia, in a release.

We are creating the easiest way for football fans to leverage their football knowledge and play with skin in the game. We are delighted to be backed by an incredible syndicate of investors who will help us drive the adoption of fantasy football forward.

According to Sorare, the firm has signed agreements with more than 90 total clubs to date (including those not yet in the game), and looks to have 150 teams and five leagues signed by the end of 2020.

Sorare launched in March 2019 and has already sold more than $1 million worth of pro player cards, which are owned by users as unique non-fungible token (NFT) assets. The sites trading volume has vaulted from $30,000 last December to $350,000 last month, and the company says its already profitable ahead of this seed funding announcement.

XRP Rival Has Incredible Potential, Ethereum and Altcoins Set to Outpace Bitcoin, Says Top Crypto Analyst – The Daily Hodl

Veteran trader Peter Brandt says XRP rival Stellar Lumens (XLM) has incredible potential and could be the next altcoin to see significant price action.

Stellar Lumens (XLM) is the native cryptocurrency of the Stellar payment network, which aims to connect banks, financial institutions, payment systems and individuals for fast and secure cross-border transactions.

XLM is currently trading at about $0.095 at the time of writing, and it has gained nearly 50% in value since the end of last month. And according to Brandt, the 14th largest cryptocurrency by market cap may just be getting started.

Brandt, who gained fame in crypto circles for calling Bitcoins big collapse in January of 2018, also says he expects Ethereum and most altcoins to outpace BTC in the short term.

Significant breakout in ETH/BTC with target of .03276. Most alts should gain on Bitcoin in near future.

Last week, crypto YouTuber Nicholas Merten said he believed a new altcoin season had officially arrived after the collective market broke a key line of resistance against BTC.

But Binance CEO Changpeng Zhao says traders should not expect the entire altcoin market to rise without reason.

He says the next altcoin season will require coins to have shown real-world progress and sufficient use cases.

The leftist case for free speech as a tool for justice – Business Insider – Business Insider

A discussion is being had about the value of free speech, the parameters of acceptable discourse, and what some see as a necessary course-correction in social and professional norms.

Triggered by the so-called "Harper's Letter" defending "the free exchange of information and ideas" as "the lifeblood of a liberal society," much of the debate has focused on what level of "problematic" speech should be tolerated and what should be career-ending.

But there's a compelling and less-publicized conversation happening among leftist perspectives arguing that free speech is as vital a principle as ever, no matter which liberal, centrist, and even conservative voices agree.

Among the "Harper's letter"'s co-signers was the patron saint of anti-imperialist socialist academia, Noam Chomsky. He's as critical of American foreign and domestic policy as any living writer, and he continues to insist that the letter needed to be written.

When asked if he was surprised by the level of controversy the letter generated, Chomsky replied that he had received a "stream of letters from left academics and activists relating their experiences, but not wanting to be identified because of the toxic culture."

Chomsky added: "The nature and scale of the reaction reinforce the message of the letter."

Jeet Heer, a national correspondent for the venerable left of center magazine The Nation, defended co-signing the letter in a column titled, "The Left Needs to Reclaim Free Speech." In doing so, Heer called out some of his co-signatories as "the rankest of hypocrites when it comes to free speech," particularly when it comes to the free speech rights of pro-Palestinian voices.

Heer also took aim at "Harry Potter" author J.K. Rowling for comments that have been slammed as transphobic: "The only way to blunt the impact of someone like Rowling is with more speech with retort, argument, parody and derision."

And just as I noted in a recent column, Heer described free speech is the greatest tool available for minority voices to advocate for their rights against powerful people and institutions who could deny them.

"To secure themselves against the likes of Rowling, trans people have built a vigorous political movement, one that is itself shielded by norms of free speech. A robust culture of free speech serves the cause of trans activism, as it does other progressive causes," Heer wrote.

Another left of center co-signatory of "the letter," New York Times columnist Michelle Goldberg wrote of a complication with binary thinking about free speech.

Citing Nicholas Grossman's article for Arc Digital that credited "private sanction, social pressure and cultural change, driven by activists and younger generations" leading to the banishment of racist and homophobic speech from polite society, Goldberg noted, "when these changes were happening, the right denounced them as violations of free expression."

In an article for the socialist magazine Jacobin, the science writer Leigh Phillips rattled off a litany of free speech and civil liberties violations perpetrated against left voices by the US and other governments, as well as by tech companies. Given such assaults on leftist speech, Phillips wrote of a distressing and cross-partisan "attitude of censorship" that seeks to "abandon due process, presumption of innocence, and other core civil liberties."

"Too many modern progressives, particularly younger ones, have become indifferent to free speech, or, worse, come to view the defense of free speech as something foreign to the Left and a weapon of oppression," Phillips adds. "This is a historic disaster."

Phillps warned: "If the liberal-left denies that illiberalism is occurring when we are the ones perpetrating it ... then we have no leg to stand on when it comes to all these other, innumerable examples. Civil liberties are for everyone, and above all for those we oppose."

The cultural commentator Ayishat Akanbi, in a recent internet video said, "We need to be able to discern between things that we find uncomfortable and things that are hateful, and we can only do that with some intellectual humility, with actually engaging with ideas and trying to see where people are coming from."

Akanbi added: "We need to be challenged otherwise we assume that we know everything, and there is nothing else to be said on something I would say that's the height of intellectual arrogance."

Citing "revolutionary types" who successfully fought for civil rights in the past, Akanbi argued that many of them would not be able to participate in mainstream discourse in today's conditions "because we are completely unforgiving" and unwilling to allow people to make mistakes, evolve, and sharpen their good ideas while getting rid of their bad ones. "You wouldn't want to be judged by your worst moment," Akanbi says.

This is a crucially important point.

We will never, ever get to a place of perfect justice. We will never be at a place where we no longer need to evolve. We will never have all the answers.

For that reason, we must maintain the basic liberal norm that people have the right to hold and express bad even wrong ideas. That doesn't mean speech shouldn't have consequences or that certain ideas shouldn't be considered beyond the pale.

What it means is that the principle of free speech itself can create sometimes infuriating conditions, but the right to free expression gives voice to the dissident. To willfully abandon it under the guise of "justice" is to be ignorant of history and presumptuous of the future.

See Comet NEOWISE Now, Or You’ll Have To Wait 6800 Years To See It Again – WBUR

Don't miss a once-in-6,800-year opportunity. The NEOWISE comet, first discovered in March, hasjust recently become visible to the human eye.

"The last time we had a comet this bright anywhere in our sky, north or south hemisphere, was in 2006," said Kelly Beatty, space reporter and senior contributing editor of Sky and Telescope magazine. "Some people might remember Comet Hale-Bopp back in 1997. This is a little more subtle, but it's still very pretty."

The name NEOWISE isan acronym for the spacecraft that discovered this comet, theNear-Earth Object Wide-field InfraredSurvey Explorer, a NASAspace telescope.

Beatty told Radio Boston that while comets swing by the Earth pretty regularly, they are not always bright enough to be easily visible so take advantage while you can.

On how the comet will look:

"It has a bright point-like head, which you could make out by eye. When you look at it with binoculars, andI encourage that, you see this graceful sort of tail draped upward from it that is telling you this is not an ordinary star by any means."

On how to find the NEOWISE comet in the sky:

"The less light pollution you have, the better. In particular, you need a clear view toward the northwest... Note where the sun sets and around 9 p.m., go out and take a turn to the right. Look up and you'll see the Big Dipper hanging in the sky. If you don't see the Big Dipper, then your chances of seeing the comet are really poor."

"Draw a line visually down from the right edge of the Big Dipper toward the horizon. ... Clench your fist and hold it out at arm's length ... and about one fist above the horizon you will find Comet NEOWISE."

On how he characterizes the makeup of a comet:

"Comets are dirty snowballs. They were created 4.5 billion years ago out on the fringes of our solar system. They have been stone-cold for all that time. This one has fallen in from the great beyond and, when it gets near the sun, the sun's heat vaporizes or technically sublimates the ices on it and causes those gases, along with dust, to go flying off. The comet itself that core is only about three miles across, but it creates this huge cloud of gas and dust around it and the tail, which reflects sunlight, makes it much more obvious than it otherwise would be."

"If this were only an asteroid three miles across, we'd never see it."

Is there anything else you can look for in the sky this month?

"If you are a really early riser, get up and go outside again. You need a clear view in all directions. At 4:30 a.m. right now, you have a chance to see all five of the planets that are visible to the eye...You look toward the east and you'll see a crescent moon and the brilliant planet Venus. Draw a line toward the lower left. That's when you'll come across Mercury, sweep your gaze to the other side of the sky. You'll pass Mars, which is high up, and then over in the southwest are Jupiter and Saturn about to set. Do it now because in a week you won't be able to see all five at one time."

Why more advisors are looking to go independent – The Globe and Mail

The pandemic has increased some introspection among advisors on where they are with their businesses and their desire to have greater control over the client experience.

FG Trade/iStockPhoto / Getty Images

The COVID-19 crisis is inspiring more financial advisors to consider going it alone, empowered by new wealth management technologies and a desire to run their own shops.

The interest comes as advisors discover that managing client relationships from home works well and are questioning their current ties to traditional firms.

As a result, wealth management technology firms are reporting a surge in inbound calls in recent weeks from prospective clients looking for information on how they can support independent advisors.

Story continues below advertisement

For the first time, a lot of advisors had to work from home and are realizing that, Wait a second, maybe I dont need a giant office. What else dont I need? Theyre also realizing that the client doesnt care if they have that big office in downtown Toronto, says Jason Pereira, partner and senior financial consultant at Woodgate Financial Inc., a financial planning firm under the IPC Securities Corp. umbrella.

Crises focus people on what really matters and, in this case, its client relationships. Theres no relationship with the institution, its with the advisors, given that were the ones holding their hands through this [situation]. Its also up to us to maintain it, he adds.

New wealth management technology is also empowering advisors to pursue independence particularly turnkey asset management programs (TAMP), independent technology platforms that allow advisors to outsource activities such as account setup and documentation as well as discretionary portfolio management. The platforms provide advisors with the technology and tools to become an independent investment counsellor portfolio manager (ICPM).

TAMP technology is behind the fast-growing registered investment advisor (RIA) business model in the U.S., which enables advisors to operate independently of large brokerage firms and provide a legal fiduciary obligation to clients. Canada has been slowly building a TAMP ecosystem, but the pace is expected to increase following the pandemic.

You have this underlying trend thats in the early innings. Happening at the same time, this crisis is causing them to reassess the value proposition of the institutions theyre working with, and the cost, Mr. Pereira says.

Toronto-based Purpose Advisor Solutions, which recently launched a TAMP business in Canada, says the past couple of months has been our busiest from an advisor-interest perspective, says Jeff Gans, the firms chief executive officer.

The pandemic has increased a desire among advisors to have greater control the client experience, he says. Some firms have struggled with technology and remote working that has further challenged that thinking.

Story continues below advertisement

Purpose Advisor Solutions enables financial planners, accounting firms and other financial professionals to provide outsourced investment management to their clients. (The firm provides the technology back end while investment-management services are run through its registered entity, Harness Investment Management Inc.)

He says advisors are starting to ask questions about what they want from their business, and are contacting Purpose Advisor Solutions to learn more about what the firm can offer.

Historically, I believe that firms have thought of advisors as salespeople. Advisors are starting to say, Im not a salesperson, Im a business owner and I want to think about my business and delivering the client experience that I want, he says.

Advisors are also feeling empowered by the success of the RIA model in the U.S., Mr. Gans adds.

Fotios Saratsiotis, president of Pascal Financial, a Toronto-based artificial-intelligence-powered wealth management platform, says hes also hearing from advisors frustrated by the technology at their current firms. Many are interested in using new and different technology platforms to work better with clients.

A lot of them have been sitting on the sidelines, he says. COVID-19 is pushing them over the edge to move faster.

Story continues below advertisement

Mr. Saratsiotis says wealth management technology can give advisors more time and bandwidth to deal with more clients with various levels of investible assets.

Stefanie Keller, CEO and certified financial planner at Stellar Wealth & Tax Solutions in Winnipeg, believes independent advisors like her are more nimble and can often adopt technology quicker than some larger organizations.

The pandemic has also shown some advisors they can work independently in a virtual type of environment, she says.

[Advisors] recognize that the big arms around you that people really valued in the past maybe werent as necessary or important as they had been previously, she says. They realized they had the ability to work in different ways, more efficiently.

Ms. Keller believes independents can also provide more efficiency for clients and more choices of products and solutions, including different services that many institutions cant provide, such as life coaching, which her firm offers.

You get to build it how you want to, she says.

Story continues below advertisement

Mr. Gans says a shift toward more independent advisors in Canada will be good for investors and the industry, overall, believing it will spur more innovation and better client experiences.

Theres a ton of innovation ready to be unleashed in Canada, he says. When advisors can go out and set up their own vision .. thats where youre going to get some really unique experiences. When advisors go out and act like business owners, they do some really interesting things. They really focus on their target client segment. The Canadian market is going to benefit from that innovation.

Theres a sense of adventure thats so satisfying, discovering all that this beautiful country has to offer...right in your backyard.

Based on a recent survey we conducted, we found that people are really looking to reconnect with friends, family and the great outdoors in their travels this summer. More than a third of our respondents ranked wanting to visit family or friends who live within driving distance as their top reason for taking a road trip over safety, says Sheryl Connelly, chief futurist at Ford Motor Company. Considering the impact of social distancing and restrictions on being able to travel or visit loved ones, this makes sense. What we also found is that people are really looking to slow down and make the most of their time away from home. More than 20% wanted to take a road trip just so they could explore and see the sights along the way to their destination.

Planning a road trip has endless opportunities from camping under the stars, checking out National Parks, or even going solo and taking some time for well-deserved self care. Youre not restricted to flying on a schedule, renting a car, and getting a hotel like regular vacations. And its okay if it doesnt go as plannedit might actually make it more fun. Veering off of the itinerary will make for a great adventure. Not sure what type of road trip to take? Here are different types of road trips to see whats best for you.

A solo road trip can be for anyone, but especially for those who are feeling stuck in their life or in search of an adventure. Theres something magical about being on the road exploring American gems, music blasting with the thoughts in your head as your copilot.

Youll feel a level of power, confidence, and freedom on a solo road trip that feels so good. I took a solo road trip down Highway 1 in California along the coast to Big Sur, and I just felt so free. I couldnt imagine doing that trip with anyone. Youre completely in control for all decisions from music to where to stop for lunch to where youre sleeping for the night. Even though youre alone, youll make a lot of friends along the wayI still keep in touch with some people I met on hiking trails and during nights out.

Yes, we all know the Grand Canyon (its beautiful and breathtaking), but did you know that there are over 400 National Parks in our Land of the Free? Planning a road trip to visit National Parks is for the history buff and outdoorsy type who enjoys camping.

The National Park Service has a great website to easily learn and find hidden gems like Bandelier National Monument in New Mexico. Explore Yosemite, plan a camping adventure along the way. Chances are, there are lesser-known National Parks within a few hours of your home that you've never visited.

No matter how close you are with your family, you will definitely learn something new about them after spending so much time together in close quarters on the road. With any road trip, its all about communicating with one another and setting boundaries. Give each other space when neededyou dont need to be on top of each other 24/7.

For me, when Im traveling Im always thinking about what stories Im going to tell my parents. But with a family road trip, we all get to experience it together. I dont need to try explaining these underwhelming stories that usually become a "you had to be there" moment. Its something well be able to reminisce about for years to come.

Best friends are the family we get to choose. They know us better than anyone else, no matter how far life takes us, theyll always be there to pick up your call. Road tripping with your besties can be an awesome time, but its important to assign roles and responsibilities before the trip to avoid conflict during the trip.

A lot goes into researching and planning the itinerary. It wouldnt be fair for just one person in the group to do all of the planning when the rest of your friends just come along without putting in any effort. Your friends each have different interests, which should be discussed ahead of time so the stops on the trip are things that everyone wants to do. With a little teamwork, it will be smooth sailing.

As much as tourists want to see the sights, they also want to taste the local food. For the foodies out there, thats what their trips revolve around. Theyre known for finding the best restaurants, seeking out underground spots, and trying cuisine that they cant get back at home.

Creating a road trip around food can literally go anywhere. Definitely make some stops down south for some true southern hospitality. Along with food, add some brewery tour stops to explore local beer and spirits too.

The road trip that could make or break a relationship. Your relationship is your business, but I wouldnt recommend traveling hours in a car together at a time until your relationship is pretty rock solid. Some bickering is bound to happen, but shouldnt be the reason for a breakup.

A road trip with someone you love is a great way to get to know them better and see them in a way that maybe you didnt see before. Traveling to beautiful sights and camping is always more fun when you have someone to share it with.

No matter which way you road trip, youll get to see America through a lens that perhaps you didnt experience before. After being kept home for months with previous trips cancelled, its a journey of self discovery and learning more about those who join you. It taught me that I didnt need to get on a plane and fly across the Atlantic Ocean to seek adventure. Who knows where the road will take you, but Im sure itll make for a great story.
