Doctors Heal Human Lungs By Attaching Them to Live Pigs – Futurism

Transplant lungscan only survive for a short period of time outside the human body. In fact, only around a quarter meet criteria for transplantation, according to the American Lung Association.

Thats why a team of researchers at Columbia University in New York have decided to find an alternative, extending the shelf life of human lungs intended to be transplanted by hooking them up to live pigs, as detailed in a new paper published in Nature Medicine today.

The procedure could allow deteriorated or damaged lungs destined for transplantation to recover within just 24 hours, New Scientist reports.

The research could even one day allow human patientsto act as their own surrogates, healing transplant lungs destined for their own bodies via a catheter in their neck, according to The New York Times.

Currently, health practitioners attempt to recover deteriorated lungs using complicated machinery called EVLP (ex vivo lung perfusion) that pumps air and fluids through the lungs but only with limited success.

To improve on this idea, a team of researchers from Columbia University in New York wondered if hooking up damaged lungs to living pigs could help remove toxins and add nutrients.

In an experiment, the team connected half a dozen human lungs from brain dead patients to the circulatory systems of anesthetized pigs for 24 hour periods.

By pumping air into the lungs inside plastic boxes and adding immunosuppressant drugs that ensured the immune systems wouldnt reject the alien lung, the team found that the lungs capacity to deliver oxygen improved considerably. Even a lung that spent 48 hours outside the body had recovered.

The technique could revolutionize the medicine of transplants.

If there were a way to maintain organs in a healthy state outside the body for a day or several days, then many things would change in transplantation, Robert Bartlett, a surgeon who developed a machine similar to the EVLP, who was not involved in the study, told STAT News. You could have perfect matching. You could treat organs injured outside the body until theyre working well.

Thats remarkable, James Fildes, regenerative medicine lecturer at the University of Manchester, UK, who wasnt involved in the research, told New Scientist. My expectation would be that that lung would be destroyed, but actually it doesnt look like it is at all.

Before implanting the resulting lungs into humans, the team wants to repeat the experiment with more lungs, as the procedure comes with plenty of risks. White cells that made it from the pig into the lungs could trigger a dangerous immune reactions in human recipients, for instance.

Some lungs may be beyond repair despite the surrogate pigs, co-author Gordana Vunjak-Novakovic admitted to New Scientist, but if you can salvage two out of every four that are rejected, you can increase the number of lungs available to patients by three times.

If we could expand the donor pool, we could avoid a lot of waiting-list deaths and could be more open-minded about who could have a transplant, Matthew Bacchetta, lung transplant surgeon at Vanderbilt University and lead author of the study, told NYT.

The team is hoping the technique could serve as a complementary approach to clinical EVLP to recover injured donor lungs that could not otherwise be utilized for transplantation, as they note in their paper.

Luckily, no pig was hurt during the experiments. According to the researchers, the pigs were left with no long-lasting effects. Some were even able to play around with toys while hooked up during a previous experiment.

Its a transformative idea that would allow a jump forward in the field, Zachary Kon, surgical director of the lung transplant center at New York University Langone Medical Center, told the Times.

More people may turn to the Affordable Care Act for health insurance as economic downturn lingers – Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

Madison Richardswas one of more than 7,000 Peace Corps volunteers worldwide evacuated in March when the potential scale of the coronavirus pandemic became clear.

The decision brought Richards, who was serving in Peru, home to Racine. It also left her without a job and without health insurance.

But Richards who has a gastrointestinal condition, a common health hazard when working in a developing country was eligible for subsidized health insurance through the Affordable Care Act.

If I did not have this plan, she said, I would not be getting treatment, to put it simply.

This is the first economic downturn in which people who have lost their jobs can receive federal subsidies to help offset the cost of health insurance.

More than half of the U.S. population gets health insurance through an employer. And millions of people who have lost their jobs because of the pandemic also have lost their health insurance.

Yet insurance brokers in the Milwaukee area generally have not seen a large increase in people buying health plans through the Affordable Care Act.

There hasnt been a big surge as I expected at least yet, said Todd Catlin of TransitionsHealth Benefits in Brookfield.

That, though, is expected to change.

Many employers have continued to provide health insurance for their furloughed workers. But the Paycheck Protection Program, which gave employers forgivable loans if they keep people on payrolls, is coming to an end.

The recent surge in infections has increased the chances of a deeper and longer recession than initially projected. And an unknown number of businesses are unlikely to survive a prolonged downturn.

People who workin low-wage jobs that don't provide health benefits have made up a large share of those now unemployed because of the pandemic. But people who have had coverageare eligible for subsidized health plans through the Affordable Care Act under what is known as a special enrollment period.

This allows people provided they previously were insuredto get coverage after the annual open-enrollment period for certain life events, such as getting married, moving or losing a job. They have 60 days to sign up.

The cutoff for the subsidies, which are pegged to annual income, is $51,040 for one person.

Most people who are unemployedwould be eligible for subsidies. In all likelihood, they also would qualify for additional subsidies available to people with low incomes to help offset deductibles and other out-of-pocket expenses.

Richards is paying about $23 a month, for example, for a health plan with an out-of-pocket maximum of $1,500.

Nationally, about 154,000 more people through May had enrolled in health plans because they lost their jobs than in the same period last year, according to the federal government. It works out to a 46% increase.

(At the end of the open-enrollment period in December, about11.4 million people, including 195,498 people in Wisconsin, had coverage through health plans sold on the marketplaces set up under the Affordable Care Act.)

The increase in enrollment at least through May is relatively small.

Security Health Plan, a subsidy of Marshfield Clinic Health System, and Common Ground Healthcare Cooperative have yet to see a significant increase in people who have gotten coverage through the Affordable Care Act because they lost their jobs.

ButMarty Anderson, chief growth officer for Security Health, said he expects an August cliff when furloughs become layoffs.

Cathy Mahaffey, CEO of Common Ground Healthcare, also expects to see more who lost their jobs to get coverage in the next few months.

I believe its coming, she said, but certainly it hasnt happened yet.

Some signs already are appearing.

The number of people who bought health plans sold by Childrens Community Health Plan from February through June has more than doubled compared with last year, Mark Rakowski, chief operating officer, said in an email. The trend was even stronger in May and June.

Julie Kautzer, who lives Manitowoc, lost her job in mid-June when Holy Family College closed. She immediately signed up for coverage.

I knew I needed to have something, she said.

Kautzer is paying $58 a month for a health plan with an $8,000 deductible. She is healthy and that was enough coverage to give her peace of mind.

If something awful does happen, she said, it is going to cost a lot more than $8,000.

Kautzer who has since contacted several former co-workers to encourage them to get health insurance is grateful for the Affordable Care Act.

The law, though, remains controversial.

In late June, the Trump administration filed a brief with the U.S. Supreme Court arguing that the entire law must be declared invalid because of a change made by Congress in 2017.

The administration supports a lawsuit filed by Republican-controlled states challenging the law. (Under former Gov. Scott Walker, Wisconsin initially was among the states but has since withdrawn from the lawsuit.) The law is being defended by 20 states and the District of Columbia.

The Supreme Court isnt expected to issue a decision until late this year.

Kautzer is among those who opposethe Trump administrations push to end the law.

This is the worsttime to do that, she said. There are so many people who need it.

Yet even supporters acknowledge the law is flawed, in part because the subsidies are too small given the high cost of health care. And public support for the law remains split.

The Kaiser Family Foundation tracking poll found that 50% of those surveyed in April support the law though support for specific provisions, such as coverage for preexisting health conditions, is strong.

Richards medical condition, for instance, would not have been covered before the Affordable Care Act.

I need this, she said. And there are people who need it way more than me.

Many people who have gotten health insurance through an employer, however, may not realize that getting coverage through the Affordable Care Act is an option.

My sense is that for people who have been on employer-sponsored plans, it just doesnt register, said Chris McArdle of MKE Benefits. Its just not on their radar.

Yet someone who was 45 years old and who lost a job at the end of June that pays $45,000 a year would be eligible for a health plan that costs $63 a month, with a $500 deductible and an out-of-pocket maximum of $2,700.

Sometimes they are astounded by how affordable the marketplace can be, McArdle said.

Insurers have been flexible in allowing employers to keep furloughed employers on their health plans, said McArdle, who also sells insurance to small employers. And employers, by and large, have done that.

The question is how long some can continue to do that.

Employers are going to be faced with some tough calls, hesaid.

Battle Ground HealthCare awarded $65000 grant for COVID-19 support – The Reflector

Earlier this week, Battle Ground HealthCare (BGHC) was awarded a $65,000 grant to fund the hiring of a nurse practitioner. This new position will assist in meeting the increased demand for care as a result of COVID-19. The addition was made possible through a rapid-response grant from the SW Washington COVID Response Fund.

Many clients of the facility have been hit particularly hard by the pandemic. The layoffs and employer cuts seen around the country have an amplified impact on lower-income patients who rely on clinic services.

The current pandemic has been a challenge to healthcare providers across the country and BGHC is no exception.

Early on we saw the need to rethink the way we deliver care Executive Director for BGHC Sue Neal said in a news release. Shifts to telephone and video visits met short-term needs, but we serve patients with chronic conditions who have highly complex medical needs and these solutions are not sustainable in the long run. A part-time nurse practitioner will allow us to get our patients back into the clinic, see more patients and offer flexibility when our patients experience acute needs outside of their regular appointments.

This grant is a recognition of the role free clinics have in meeting healthcare needs during this pandemic, Board President Adam Lee said. Partners like the Community Foundation for Southwest Washington and those who contributed to the COVID Response Fund enable the work we do. Without support from outside organizations and from our generous donors, we would not be able to continue our life-changing work.

While the COVID Response Fund grant will provide the short-term funding needed during the current pandemic, BGHC will be seeking additional grants and funding to continue in this increased capacity on an ongoing basis.

3 Top Healthcare Stocks to Buy Right Now – The Motley Fool

Investors often consider the healthcare sector a "defensive" one because people get sick in good economic times and bad. Thus, the stocks tend to hold up in times when worries about the economy abound.

That maxim has pretty much been tossed out the window in 2020, along with much of conventional investing wisdom. The healthcare sector has been thrown into turmoil with stay-at-home orders and clinic closures. But biotech stocks have been doing very well, with the iShares NASDAQ Biotechnology ETF (NASDAQ:IBB) up 16% this year.

For investors looking for places to put money in the midst of uncertainty about the direction of the pandemic, stocks of companies in the forefront of important medical advances hold promise for the long term. BioNTech(NASDAQ:BNTX), NeoGenomics (NASDAQ:NEO), and Illumina (NASDAQ:ILMN) are three companies that should come through the pandemic era stronger than ever.

Stocks that are in the race for a COVID-19 vaccine have seen their shares soar in the past four months, but German biotech BioNTech is still a good buy for the long term. Despite a big partner for the vaccine in Pfizerand an approach based on the same technology as Moderna's, shares haven't risen as far as those of Moderna, and BioNTech's market capitalization is only two-thirds of it.

BioNTech is differentiated from its competitors in that it has four vaccines for the SARS-CoV-2 virus, each with a unique messenger RNA (mRNA) format, in clinical tests designed to quickly narrow down to the most promising candidate. On July 1, the company and Pfizer reported very positive results from a phase 1/2 trial of one of the four candidates, saying that the blood concentration of neutralizing antibodies in the subjects were up to 2.8 times higher than in patients who had recovered from the virus. Still to come soon are results from the three other candidates, and the company expects to start a phase 2b/3 study this month with 30,000 participants.

But the reason to buy BioNTech for the long term isn't for a COVID-19 vaccine, although a win there would be a strong catalyst. The more important driver for the company's business is the company's rich pipeline of next-generation cancer immunotherapies. The company has 10 anti-cancer drugs in 11 clinical trials targeting melanoma and cancers of the breast, ovaries, prostate, pancreas, head and neck, and other solid tumors. BioNTech should produce a steady news flow of results from these trials in the coming months. Success is not a sure thing, but if the news is good, the stock should have a strong tailwind.

The pandemic caused hospitals and health centers to postpone elective medical procedures, but what was a little surprising was that even companies that provided services needed to treat severe diseases such as cancer saw a drop in business as the stay-at-home orders went into effect. NeoGenomics is the largest pure-play oncology testing company and saw its clinical test volume drop 20% year over year in the last two weeks of March and between 25% and 30% in April.

NeoGenomics is in a sweet spot in healthcare. Oncology is by far the largest area of investment among drug companies, with 40% of all U.S. clinical development spending going to cancer drug trials, about three times the amount for the therapy area in second place. Driving the industry are new approaches to therapies that target malignancies based on the specific biochemistry and genetics of different cancers. As medicines become more specific, testing becomes an increasingly important part of treatment, and NeoGenomics is growing sales both to clinicians working with cancer patients and to pharmaceutical companies developing new drugs.

NeoGenomics' business should bounce back quickly even if the pandemic resurges, given the urgency of treatment for seriously ill cancer patients. The company didn't furlough employees when the business dipped, so as to be better prepared for the rebound it expects. Revenue growth in the first quarter dipped to 11% after jumping 40% in the fourth quarter, and analysts are actually expecting a 15% decline in revenue when the company reports second-quarter results on July 28. The company continues to expect long-term organic growth in the mid-teens and will probably continue to grow by acquisition as well.

Investors have been buying the stock in recent weeks, after the company launched a new suite of liquid biopsy tests, enabling the detection of cancer biomarkers from blood samples when tissue specimens of solid tumors are hard to obtain. Low expectations in the near term, strong growth prospects for the long term, and the ability to innovate through internal development and partnerships make the stock a buy for patient investors.

Illumina dominates the market for gene sequencers, and even though COVID-19 research drove up sales of gene sequencing systems in the first quarter, the company expected sequential declines in revenue in every region in the second quarter. Shutdowns of research institutions and clinics should take a toll on the company's results, which will be reported on Aug. 3.

But longer term, the company is in great shape. The use of genetic information in the diagnosis and treatment of disease is accelerating, while large-scale population studies just getting under way when the pandemic hit will eventually drive big increases in sales of the supplies used in operating Illumina's instruments.

Illumina's business tends to follow the company's cycle of new product introductions. The launch of a major new platform, such as the mid-range sequencers the company announced in January, can cause a temporary slowing of sales as customers stop buying older models, but then it can fuel a strong, multi-year surge in growth as higher sequencing speeds at lower costs draw in new customers. That scenario appears to be playing out this year, with first-quarter revenue up only 2% because of soft system sales, but with almost half of early sales of the new NextSeq 2000 system going to customers who were buying their first Illumina product.

Gene sequencing produces massive amounts of data, so Illumina directs some of its investment to tools that help clinicians and researchers make sense of it all. The company this month launched new software to help detect genetic diseases from genomic information and last month acquired Dutch software company BlueBee, maker of cloud software for interpreting genomic data.

Illumina should emerge from the COVID-19 era stronger than ever, and its latest new products should give the company a boost going into 2021.

First round of COVID-19 tests related to health-care worker return negative – The Guardian

CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I.

The first round of COVID-19 tests related to the health-care worker at Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) have all returned negative.

Dr. Heather Morrison, P.E.I.'s chief public health officer, confirmed the results in an evening media release on Friday, July 17. Following her announcement that a health-care worker tested positive for COVID-19 earlier this week, a large number of people were tested to be on the safe side.

Overall, 613 QEH staff and 145 Island EMS staff were tested, and along with the previously reported case of a woman in her 80s, 94 patients that the health-care worker had contact with were tested - all tests returned negative.

An additional six patients from out of province were contacted and advised to be tested. As well, 61 patients and 30 staff members will require a second test, which will be completed by July 19.

Between July 12 and 16, a total of 2,054 lab tests were completed at the QEH lab.

We Need To Protect Trans Rights Against The Government’s Plans To Regress Back To Transphobia – Impact Magazine – Impact Magazine

It is difficult to make progressive social change under a Conservative government, where their whole ethos is about preserving the status quo. Under Theresa Mays government, this was set to change; plans had been made to allow transgender people to change their gender on their birth certificate without having a medical diagnosis. This would have been a progressive step forward to allow transgender people the right to live freely and authentically.

However, under Boris Johnsons government, these plans have been scrapped entirely and instead replaced by the protection of female-only public spaces which is regressive and harmful to both transgender and non-binary people.

Would this mean that police would stand outside of public toilets judging whether or not a woman was feminine enough?

The reasoning behind the scrapping of these plans is unclear, yet the consequences will be detrimental to the transgender community. Not only this, but the fact that the government plans to make female-only public spaces will force transgender women to use the male bathroom in public.

This is extremely derogatory and is a violation of the dignity of transgender women. The youth charity Mermaids stated that, If we legislate to police gender in toilets, then how and at what point do we decide who is and isnt a woman?

Would this mean that police would stand outside of public toilets judging whether or not a woman was feminine enough to use the bathroom facilities?

This would be an uncomfortable experience for all women, but transgender women would suffer the most as a result. What right does anyone have to determine someone elses gender expression?

Whilst this is a step towards acceptance of the LGBT community, it is not enough to dismantle our heteronormative and homophobic systems

It is invasive and wrong, and this legislation would only increase transphobia within the country, making it a hostile environment that transgender people would be forced to live in.

Why are we going backwards in equality for transgender rights? Especially as Pride month just passed, we should be establishing equality for all genders and sexualities. The government also has decided to ban gay cure therapies, which has been described as an attempt to placate the LGBT community.

Whilst this is a step towards acceptance of the LGBT community, it is not enough to dismantle our heteronormative and homophobic systems. It is meant as a distraction to take the focus off the scrapping of the self-identifying gender plans.

The protection of female-only spaces will only increase transphobia and hate crimes within the UK. Many transgender people have already begun dreading what these plans will mean for their lives, and are particularly fearing a US-style bathroom bill which will be extremely harmful.

Questioning someones gender identity every time they use the bathroom in public discriminates against and ostracises transgender people. This could potentially increase the cases of gender dysphoria a medical condition that some trans people experience which can cause depression, anxiety and suicide.

One of the proposing arguments to securing female-only spaces is that it would protect women from male sexual predators pretending to be women.

However, having researched into this, this statement was a myth perpetuated by the former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee in the US and has since been used by conservatives as an excuse to uphold their transphobic beliefs.

The discrimination that transgender people face every day is bad enough; let alone adding in further legislation preventing them from using the toilet in public spaces

The organisation Media Matters investigated in 2014 into the number of sexual assault cases across the US, comparing the 12 states who protect trans rights against the rest who dont. It was found that the states with non-discriminatory laws on the books found no increase in sexual assault cases since the law had passed, and had zero allegations of bathroom assault.

Therefore, the argument that allowing transgender people to use the bathroom of their choice would make public toilets unsafe for cis women is not valid and was a myth fabricated to stop the progress of trans rights.

We need to prevent this from happening. The discrimination that transgender people face every day is bad enough; let alone adding in further legislation preventing them from using the toilet in public spaces.

Write to your local MP asking them to prevent the government from scrapping the self-identifying gender plans and to protect trans rights. Sign any petitions that want to protect trans rights.

Petitions that reach 100,000 signatures on the petition.parliament.uk website will be considered for debate by the Petitions Committee of the House of Commons, and will ultimately make more of an impact than the petitions signed on Change.org.

We need to make progress towards achieving equality in a society that celebrates our differences, rather than regressing into oppression that only spreads fear and hate.

Some Americans refuse to mask up. Rules, fines and free masks will change that, experts say. – USA TODAY

An expert explains the need to wear face masks to prevent the spread of the coronavirus. Wochit

Many Americans have embraced health officials' recommendationto wear masks in public, and those who refuse tomaskupare likely to encounter increasing pressure in the coming weeks and months.

There is asizable minority of Americans who are skeptical,AshishJha, director of the Harvard Global Health Institute, told USA TODAY evidenced in part by numerousviral videos showing shoppers floutingmask rules.

Critics say mask mandates infringe on their personal freedom. Some right-leaning Americans callmasks a tool of oppression, Democratic conspiracyand even sacrilege.

Evidence showsface coverings are an effective way of slowing the spread of COVID-19, leadingmore state leaders to enact mask mandates. Friday,Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, a Republican, said face coverings were the only way to avoid another shutdown of the state's economy.

Officials voting to require face masks in public have faced lawsuits and have been shouted down by their constituents.

Just as speeding and drinking and driving are dangerous, not wearing a mask during a pandemic is similarly reckless it puts your and others' lives at risk, Jha said.

Asgovernment-issued mask mandatesbecome more common, expertstold USA TODAY those rules along with fines, free masks and education could help shape the behavior of a nation, similar to how traffic enforcement discourages bad driving.

Here's a look at how mask rules are being enforcedand what experts said will work best in changing the behavior of people skeptical of masks.

Like many government actions relating to the coronavirus, states have unveiled a patchwork of rules governing masks. About half of states mandate masks in public.

Enforcement of those rules is uneven. Somelocal governments, including inWest Hollywood, California andPensacola, Florida, plan to use fines to enforce the regulations. Other law enforcement agenciespublicly declinedto enforce the laws.

Some of the most consistent, nationwide enforcement comes from businesses, which have the right to deny service to customers who are not wearing a mask.

R-0 may be the most important scientific term youve never heard of when it comes to stopping the coronavirus pandemic. USA TODAY

Cincinnati's enforcement strategy serves as an examplefor the rest of the country,Angela Duckworth an author, professor of psychology at the University of Pennsylvania andco-director of the Penn-WhartonBehavior Change for Good Initiative told USA TODAY.

In that system, health inspectors respond to complaints by approaching the unmasked individualandasking, Would you like a mask?

Antonio Young, the Cincinnati Health Department'sdirector of environmental health, said that most of the time, people will comply with the rule at that point. If not, the inspector can issue a $25 fine.

That's the kind of systemDuckworth and Jha hope to see rolled out more widely. They said hallmarks of an effective campaign include:

Many Americans cherish their individualliberties, and shaping cultural norms even under the best of circumstances can take years.

As the virus has taken hold in more conservative regionsin the South and West, face coveringshave become an unlikely focus of political partisanship, leading to mass refusals to wear them.

Complicating things further, theCenters for Disease Control and Prevention acknowledges somehealth concerns in its mask guidance: Wearing a mask"may exacerbate a physical or mental health condition, lead to a medical emergency, or introduce significant safety concerns" in some people.

Some of the most common claims around this exception, such as mask wearingcausing low oxygen levels, have been debunked.Businesses can make reasonable modifications for people with disabilities includingcurbside pickup, offering appointments and face shields instead of face masks, the Southeast ADA Center in Atlanta said.

Other factors contributing to challenges around mask wearing, according toDuckworth and Jha:

President Trump is getting a fresh push to don a face mask during the pandemic from some Republicans and members of Fox News. Buzz60

Social pressure around masks continues to grow.

What started out months ago as a "#maskon" hashtag and online tools that allow users to add a digital mask to theirprofile picture morphed into public shaming ofpeople who have made a scene while defying mask rules, often with political overtones.

The intensity surrounding the issuehas left Jha with mixed feelings.

On one hand, he supports using social pressure to normalize mask wearing. On the other, he worries it could turn into vigilantism.

Most peoplewant to do the right thing," he said. Those who pushback against mask rules have probably been"fed a lot of misinformation.

Macau casinos the last place VIP gamblers wanted to be in Q2 – CalvinAyre.com

Figures released Thursday by Macaus Gaming Inspection & Coordination Bureau (DICJ) show local casino operators generated gaming revenue of just MOP3.23b (US$404.9m), down 95.6% from the same period last year, a comparative golden age that had yet to hear of something called COVID-19.

On a year-to-date basis, total gaming revenue (including lottery, sports and race betting) totaled just under MOP40b, down from MOP150b in the first six months of 2019.

VIP baccarat revenue totaled a mere MOP1.5b in Q1, also down 95.6% year-on-year. Mass market baccarat fell 96.4% to just over MOP1b. Both verticals were also shadows of their Q1 2020 selves, a period that featured around five weeks of pre-COVID activity.

Mass market gaming revenue (including slots) totaled MOP1.73b in Q2, down 95.5% year-on-year, but enough to maintain its market share lead (53.5%) over VIP, marking the sixth straight quarter in which VIP baccarat has taken a back seat to its less flashier cousin. VIP baccarats share of the overall pie slipped nearly two points from Q1.

Casino operators are praying for a reversal of fortune in Q3 following this weeks news that Chinas Guangdong province was dropping its 14-day quarantine requirement for individuals arriving from Macau. Local officials said there were about 1,600 arrivals at Macaus border checkpoints on Wednesday, around 60% higher than the day before.

However, Beijing has yet to authorize the resumption of issuing Individual Visit Scheme permits for mainland residents, leaving many analysts skeptical of any significant short-term rebound for Macaus gaming revenue.

Gamblers who do choose to visit Macau casinos will be subject to COVID-19 testing both upon arrival and before returning to the mainland. Mandatory testing of frontline casino staff is also underway, although untested staff will still be allowed to work while awaiting their turn to be swabbed.

Macaus downturn has similarly impacted the special administrative regions crime statistics, as the Financial Intelligence Office recently reported 31.2% fewer suspected money laundering cases in the first half of 2020. The Office said the decline was primarily due to a decline in suspicious transactions at Macau casinos.

OPINION-The Politics of Flood Control in China – Macau Business

The year 2020 is a tremendous challenge to the governance of China not only because of the outbreak of Covid-19 but also the ongoing floods in many provinces, counties, towns and villages along the Yangtze River, including Anhui, Hubei, Jiangxi, and Chongqing.

Since the flood season began in June, the Chinese Ministry of Water Resources reported on July 13 that 433 rivers witnessed water levels rising beyond the warning levels, affecting many lakes such as Dongting, Poyang and Taihu. About 33 rivers envisaged water levels risen to their highest levels.

The Ministry of Emergency Management revealed that rainfall had broken its record since 1961, leading to the death of 141 citizens and economic losses of 60 billion yuan.

In comparison with the floods that killed 431 people in 1991, 4,150 people in 1998 and 164 people 2016, the number of deaths in the ongoing floods is kept at a level temporarily lower than the 2016 situation. The 2020 flooding are affecting the livelihood of 37,890,000 people, influencing the upper and lower streams of the Yangtze River, including Guangdong and Guangxi provinces.

The 1998 floods were regarded as the most serious ones in the history of the Peoples Republic of China (PRC), affecting 2.23 billion people, killing 4,150 citizens and leading to economic losses of 25.5 billion yuan.

As early as May 19, President Xi Jinping requested in the Politburo Standing Committee (PSC) meeting that all the government departments concerned must shoulder the responsibility of preventing, monitoring and preparing for the upcoming floods. He stressed that provincial and local governments had to control Covid-19 on the one hand and to enhance flood-controlling measures on the other. President Xi urged all the provincial and local authorities to repair flood-prevention work, increase logistical supplies, enhance food storage, and organize simulation exercises and training to protect the lives of ordinary citizens.

After the floods occurred in many places along the Yangtze River in June, the PSC meeting on June 28 was characterized by President Xis instruction that provincial and local governments must implement the responsibility system in flood control, and that they must combine flood supervision with not only the organization of flood relief but also the evacuation of flood victims to safe places. Adopting multiple measures, provincial and local authorities were urged to lay down the foundation of reconstruction work.

When the flooding became serious, President Xi during the PSC meeting on July 12 demanded that all party secretaries and government leaders must go down to the grassroots levels to comprehend the flooding situation, and that they should become front-line cadres leading the ordinary people to control floods, to build up temporary levees, to strengthen existing dykes and dams, and to assist the victims. He emphasized the importance of mobilizing party cadres, the Peoples Liberation Army (PAP), the Peoples Armed Police (PAP), and the need for all departments at various levels to coordinate among themselves effectively.

Five days later, on July 17, President Xi again in the PSC meeting appealed to need for all provincial and local authorities to strengthen flood control work, to consolidate logistical supplies and to prepare for the worst-case scenarios.

While the central governments leadership remains decisive and prompt, there are several features in the current politics of controlling flooding in China.

First and foremost, the seriousness of flooding questions the performance of local governments in flood prevention and control. Mainland meteorologist Luo Jingjie has regarded climate change and the rising water levels as the main factors shaping the ongoing floods. Moreover, a former chief engineer of the Ministry of Water Resources, Cheng Xiaotao, pointed to the problems that more waters were released from the dams at the upper streams, and that there was a lack of experiences in managing water levels in various rivers and streams.

Cheng added that many rivers and streams belong to the jurisdictions of different local governments and administrative precincts, which traditionally have their vested interests and which lack sufficient coordination and cooperation in dealing with flood-prevention work. According to Cheng, the upper streams of Yangtze River lacked large-scale reservoirs to control water flows, while the dykes located at the middle and lower rivers are made up of mud. The current floods exert tremendous pressure on the lower rivers and streams, where the water levels have been exacerbated by sustained heavy rainfalls. He suggested that all local governments should enhance monitoring and coordination work.

In recent years, urbanization has been proceeding so quickly in many places along the Yangtze River that it is not matched by a corresponding improvement of the water drainage systems, which remain old and outdated in many regions. Hence, the current floods impact 6 million people in Jiangxi and endanger the city of Wuhan.

An engineer from Taiwan, Li Hongyuan, pointed out that while the Three Gorges Dam remains solid and crucial, the capacity of underground water drainage systems in many places remains inadequate, and that this predicament may take 20 to 30 years to improve.

Second, the mass media have remained very weak in covering the ongoing floods, unlike the 2008 Sichuan earthquake during which the media played a crucial role in making the developments transparent and helping the rescue and relief work. Critics have observed that thePeoples Dailyonly carried two reports on the floods in June and President Xis remarks on June 28 were a turning point that propelled the mainland media to be much bolder in covering the floods.

The relatively weak mass media in China is perhaps a reflection of its oscillating role from boldness to cautiousness in reporting Covid-19 from January to the present. After all, the media have been ordered to follow the line of the Chinese Communist Party loyally. Since July, the mainland social media have seen more reports of the flooding developments. Overall, the politically tight atmosphere in China is perhaps an obstacle to the increased awareness of the citizens and groups in coping with flood control.

Third, the PLA and PAP were swiftly mobilized to rescue the flood victims and to consolidate levees in many places. From July 9 to 15, at least 4,800 members of the air force were sent to different places, carrying sandbags to rebuild dykes and providing more logistical supplies. About 24,000 soldiers from the PLA and PAP were dispatched to assist flood-controlling work in Jiangxi province. Many PLA soldiers from Army Groups 81, 82 and 83 were mobilized to help various cities in Anhui and Hubei provinces. Some of them used rafts to go into submerged homes to rescue citizens, while the Communist Youth League was mobilized to rebuild and strengthen the levees at Hubeis Huangshi city where a lake witnessed an unprecedented 20 meters of water level. On July 14, State Councillor Wang Yong, who was also the chairman of the State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters, underlined the importance of strict precautions against dikes and reservoirs breaches as well as waterlogging. Clearly, full-scale mobilization could be seen in many provinces after President Xis major speech on June 28.

Fourth, the deployment of high technology to deal with flood detection and control can be seen. Drones were used to detect water levels of rivers and reservoirs; special tractors were used to release 3,000 cubic meters of water per hour from flooding areas; high-speed robot boats were utilized to rescue flood victims and each of them can accommodate four persons; 5G instrument has been combined with Virtual Reality so that the headquarters monitoring floods can comprehend the situation of flooding and rescue work; and new mobile naval bridges have been used to transport engineering equipment and facilities to repair breached dykes and levees. The Chinese satellites have been used to take clear pictures of different places plagued by flooding, enabling the authorities to control the floods and rescue citizens more effectively and efficiently.

In short, while the central government in Beijing has been reacting quickly to the flooding situation in various places, the main weakness of Chinas battle against seasonal floods remains the coordination and efforts of local governments. The relative weakness of local governance was revealed in the outbreak of Covid-19 in early 2020, but it has perhaps been exposed again in the ongoing challenge to prevent, minimize and control the extensive floods.

Libertarian Congressional candidate to stop in Wellsboro this Sunday – The Wellsboro Gazette

On Sunday, July 19, Liz Terwilliger will meet with members of the public to hear their concerns about how change is needed in the county. Terwilliger will also answer questions from the community and share what she has learned from local parents, business owners, teachers and other concerned residents.

This free event will be held from 24 p.m. on Sunday, July 9th at Woodland Park at 109 East Ave., Wellsboro. Precautions will be taken to ensure a safe event with proper social distancing and sanitation.

People across Tioga County have told me that they are frustrated with the business-as-usual attitude from their representatives, said Terwilliger. The challenges that the county has faced this year have been incredibly difficult. Government has only made things worse. Tioga County has had politicians, not representatives, in the State House and in Washington, and this must stop with the next election.

Terwilliger is running for Congress in the PA 12th Congressional District which includes Tioga County. She will be joined at the Woodland Park by Noyes Lawton, running for the state representative in the 68th PA District. Both Liz Terwilliger and Noyes Lawton are running on the Libertarian Party ticket.

I am eager to hear from Tioga County residents no matter what political party they are registered with, as well as the many Independents in our county, she said. They have been taken for grated for too long, and it is time their voices were heard. Noyes and I will get these voters real representation both in Washington and in the State House. Please come by and meet us and tell us about your concerns and your views on improving our county.

Potential Key to the 2020 Election: Voters Who Can’t Stand Both Trump and Biden – Reason

Voters who can't stand either major-party presidential nominee could be one of the keys to the electionand unlike in 2016, that might be bad news for President Donald Trump.

Four years ago, in a contest between two of the least-liked presidential nominees in history, Trump benefitted from the number of voters who found him slightly less detestable than Hillary Clinton. But a new Morning Consult poll suggests that Trump isn't doing as well with the "haters demographic" this time around. Voters who hold unfavorable views of both Trump and presumptive Democratic nominee Joe Biden are more likely to hold their nose and vote for the former vice president than for the incumbent.

Exit polling on Election Day 2016 showed that voters who did not like either major party candidate ended up backing Trump over Hillary Clinton by a 17-point margin. With less than four months to go until Election Day 2020, Morning Consult's new poll shows Biden with a 29-point lead with the same group. Among the 43 percent who say they are undecided, Biden has a 19-point lead when they are forced to make a choice.

The group also feels more strongly about Trump than it does about Biden: 66 percent saying they have veryunfavorable views of the president, while only 40 percent say the same about Biden. Again, this is only looking at voters who say they have unfavorable views of both.

The influence that the so-called "haters demographic" could have on the election depends on a few things.

First, because of the Electoral College, there's a geographic limitation on how much of a role voter anger can play. No matter how much a Californian might hate Joe Biden, California is going to be blue state.

Second, like all polls that attempt to organize individuals into groups, this one can be a bit fuzzy around the edges. There are people out there who might say they dislike both candidates but are already fairly certain of how they will vote. Many conservatives, for example, might have voted for Trump in 2016 not because they particularly liked him but because they wanted a Republican president to pick judges. That's a valid way to sort through an awful choice like the one presented in 2016, and it demonstrates that some voters are motivated by more than their personal feelings towards the two candidates.

Then there is the role of third parties. The abysmal approval ratings for Trump and Clinton in 2016 likely contributed to the record-shattering number of votes received that year by former New Mexico Gov. Gary Johnson, the Libertarian Party's presidential nominee.

Few observers think that this year's Libertarian ticketled by the Clemson psychologist Jo Jorgensenwill match Johnson's performance. But the Morning Consult poll didn't include any third-party candidates, so it may have a blind spot when it comes to whether members of the so-called "haters demographic" might refuse to vote for both Trump and Biden. Some might simply stay home; others might try to find an alternative candidate they actually like.

With negative partisanship driving so much of American politics these daysparticularly on cable news and social mediait shouldn't be too surprising that voters with a negative view of both Trump and Biden are likely to decide the election. And with more than 100 days to go before the polls close, both candidates will have ample opportunities to add to that demographic.

Cloud computing for the future: current trends, what to expect and more. – Lanka Business Online

The industry of software outsourcing in Sri Lanka has long since been garnering demand to deliver products and services that are uniquely focused towards customers needs both locally and internationally. As businesses both large and small compete to understand their end consumers better, building digital products and services that are oriented towards customer experience arent an embellishment on top of core offerings theyre an essential. As a result, the approach you adopt towards delivering customer-centric products and services can make or break your business in this day and age, especially in light of fierce business competition, as well as a pandemic that has long since enforced lockdowns and invited economic downturns.

In spite ofthe compromised circumstances we are all in on a global scale, business hasstill been functioning as usual. How? Thanks to the cloud, of course. Makingremote work a possibility at record time and at scale, even organizations thatoperated by conventional means up until then experienced little to no downtimeduring transition. Likewise, fast-paced customer centricity has also been madepossible by the cloud, which therefore makes it an integral foundation for thedigital landscape we heavily rely on today.

Asindispensable as it is, the cloud is here to stay, no doubt. But what else doesit have in store for the future? Here are a few such trends, all of which areoffshoots from the world of cloud computing.

At a timewhen everyone was more or less compelled to shift to working remotely (elserisk shutting down their businesses), the cloud has been the driving forcebehind every single transition, complex or otherwise. This has also broughtUnified Communications as a Service (UCaaS) ever more to the forefront, as cloud-basedproviders leading the sector have proactively stepped up to assist businessesin moving over to a remote work environment as smoothly as possible.

Whetherits a basic web conferencing solution to conduct weekly meetings with yourteam, or a remote call centre to handle inquiries from all over the world,UCaaS has been massively beneficial while being completely based and managedon the cloud.

The conceptof automation has long since been abuzz with discussion, and with ampleinfluence from the cloud as well. In due course of the recent turn of eventshowever, automation is an endeavour that is growing in importance for thebenefit of getting things done through minimal contact. While this is one morereason for automation to be taken seriously by businesses of all sizes, itsprofound impact on both a consumer (customized product recommendations) andenterprise (containerized applications that are based across multiple nodes)are just some of the many reasons as to why automation is going to gain evenmore traction as time rolls on by.

Automationclosely ties in over here too, as comprehensive analytics is a prerequisite forautomating operations, including IoT devices. With almost any device now opento the possibility of being transformed into a smart device, telemetry (theprocess of gathering data from endpoints) has improved both in terms of qualityand quantity thereby opening greater opportunities to train your cloud-basedsystems to be more intuitive via AI and machine learning.

As cloudcomputing becomes a crucial component for todays digital landscape, it alsobecomes more vulnerable in terms of cyber security. With businesses andconsumers alike connected and dependent on the cloud 24/7, a large number ofendpoints make cloud-based networks vulnerable to cyber breaches of all kinds, ranging from theft to espionage. As a result, the industry of securitysoftware, which includes both security for your cloud networks as well as SaaSsecurity solutions is constantly on the rise, as organizations plan on how toprevent and mitigate future risks.

Cloud support services arent reserved for consumers and businesses alone; in a fast-paced world which requires equally fast yet accurate problem-solving, quantum computing has been the answer to providing solutions that even the most robust supercomputers of today take years to deliver on. With minimal use cases as of current, as well as research and development still in the works, leading technology giants have been at the centre of it with the cloud providing a strong foundation for operations and analytics to take place.

In a nutshell

While customer centricity had been a major factor behind the advent and innovation of cloud computing, the current pandemic has introduced a whole host of reasons to depend on the very same, all the more. As a dedicated AWS partner, weve been witnessing numerous trends that are rising from the world of cloud computing, with a steady shift to remote work being one of the biggest. Although automation has been a trend in the cloud landscape for a long time, it is slowly gaining traction, as it enables seamless operations on both an enterprise and consumer level.

A growingnumber of endpoints, particularly IoT devices have been the source for advancedtelemetry, thereby enabling round-the-clock collection of data, which can thenbe used to proactively control devices. AI and machine learning further enhancethis process, as cloud networks can now be trained to function in a mannerthats more intuitive, resulting in analytics that are accurate even whenmaking future predictions.

With agrowing interest and reliance on cloud computing, networks are also more proneto vulnerabilities such as data theft, fraud and espionage. The securitysoftware industry (which includes both security for cloud networks, as well assingle-purpose, SaaS-based security solutions) has also experienced asignificant increase in demand. Last but not the least, quantum computing isanother emerging trend in the field of complex problem solving, with leadingtech giants using the cloud as an integral base to conduct research, development and deployments.

By Jim Downard

Only in the sense that I wasnt prone to proselytizing the matter, not bringing it up just as confrontational thing. But thinking through my memory, I was never shy about expressing my views on whether particular gods existed.

Now to be fair, I was raised in a functionally secular household, where the issue didnt arise from my familyno obligatory attendance even at holiday religious services. And my attitude towards education was the same one my parents had, which was that public school was not a place where that needed to be discussed. In fact my mother pulled me out of a grade school Bible hour class that she had not approved and considered not the responsibility of the school to do in the first place. Those sorts of things arent a feature of public schools these days.I dont recall any backlash or social outcasting on that account at the time, by the way.But then I was only 6 so maybe just didnt notice.

MATTINGLY: Is it time to add the Great to St. John Paul II? – Bristol Herald Courier

As he began his 1979 pilgrimage through Poland, Pope John Paul II preached a soaring sermon that was fiercely Catholic, yet full of affection for his homeland.

For Communist leaders, the fact that the former Archbishop of Krakow linked faith to national pride was pure heresy. The pope joyfully claimed divine authority to challenge atheism and the governments efforts to reshape Polish culture.

Man cannot be fully understood without Christ, John Paul II told 290,000 people at a Mass in Warsaws Victory Square. He cannot understand who he is, nor what his true dignity is, nor what his vocation is, nor what his final end is. ... Christ cannot be kept out of the history of man in any part of the globe, at any longitude or latitude of geography.

That was bad enough. Then he added: It is therefore impossible without Christ to understand the history of the Polish nation. ... If we reject this key to understanding our nation, we lay ourselves open to a substantial misunderstanding. We no longer understand ourselves.

This was the stuff of sainthood, and John Paul II received that title soon after his 26-year pontificate ended. But the global impact of that 1979 sermon is a perfect example of why many Catholics believe its time to attach another title to his name the great.

The informal title the great is not one that is formally granted by the church, explained historian Matthew Bunson, author of The Pope Encyclopedia: An A to Z of the Holy See.

Every saint who is also a pope is not hailed as the great, but the popes who have been called the great are all saints. ... When you hear that title, you are dealing with both the love of the faithful for this saint and the judgment of history.

In the case of John Paul II, mourners chanted Santo subito! (Saint now!) and waved posters with that slogan at his funeral. During a Mass only 13 hours after his death, Cardinal Angelo Sodano spoke of John Paul, indeed, John Paul the Great.

When he was chosen to succeed John Paul II, Pope Benedict XVIs first words to the crowd in St. Peters Square were, After the great pope ...

Discussions of attaching the great to this saints title were jumpstarted by a recent letter from Benedict XVI that marked the centenary of the birth, in the Polish town of Wadowice, of the man who would become John Paul II.

The word saint indicates Gods sphere, and the word great, the human dimension, wrote Benedict. The term great is harder to define, he added, and in the course of the almost 2,000-year-long history of the papacy, the title the great has been maintained only for two popes: Leo I (440-461) and Gregory I (590-604). In the case of both, the word great has a political connotation, but precisely because something of the mystery of God himself becomes visible through their political success.

In both of those cases, Bunson said, the future of Rome and the Roman world were at risk with Leo dealing with Attila the Hun, while Gregory faced the invading forces of the Lombards. Pope Gregory the Great also produced epic works of theology, especially on the liturgy and the work of bishops.

With that in mind, just look at the dramatic life of John Paul II, Bunson said. You start with his underground work against the Nazis, then all the ways that he stood up to Communism during the Cold War. Finally, there are his encyclicals opposing the existential threat of postmodernism what he called the culture of death to the value of the human person.

In his letter, Benedict XVI quoted the famous words of Russias Joseph Stalin, who asked, considering Europes future: How many divisions does the pope have?

As it turned out, Pope John Paul II was more than a worthy opponent.

Let us leave open the question of whether the epithet the great will prevail or not, noted the retired pope. It is true that Gods power and goodness have become visible to all of us in John Paul II. In a time when the Church is again suffering from the oppression of evil, he is for us a sign of hope and confidence.
