Threat of a Trump without rallies triggers fears across GOP – POLITICO

The nursing home industry has been pushing for looser regulations for years. And they got what they wanted at the start of the pandemic. But now, advocates say lax standards are fueling the virus' spread.

One senior administration official said the lack of recognition some of Trumps top aides have paid to coronavirus has done irreversible damage to his reelection campaign. Internal divisions over how much focus Trump should lend to the virus have plagued the White House in recent weeks. Chief of staff Mark Meadows and senior adviser Jared Kushner have both pushed the president to focus on communicating a strong second-term agenda, including measures he would take to help bring the U.S. economy roaring back to life, while others have encouraged him to focus on combating the virus itself given its widespread impact on most peoples lives.

If you solve the virus problem, almost everything else will solve itself, said the senior administration official.

Instead of attending meetings with health officials alongside Vice President Mike Pence, the president has been eager to resume a demanding campaign schedule that mirrors his approach in 2016. When Trump has weighed in on the viral pandemic, it has been tangential: Last week, he hosted a White House event to discuss the reopening of schools this fall. But he has consistently attributed the rising number of cases in southwestern states to increased testing capabilities, even as other administration officials acknowledge that testing alone cannot statistically account for surges in most areas.

In an interview with CBS on Tuesday, Trump said Covid-19 testing in the U.S. has been working too well.

Were finding thousands and thousands of cases, he told the network.

Campaign staffers who scrambled to get the president back in front of the large audiences he craves were so shaken by the Tulsa episode they waited until the eleventh hour to call off his New Hampshire rally for fear of upsetting him, according to the two people close to the campaign. Staffers who were already on the ground in Portsmouth, N.H., a riverfront city situated in a county Trump handily won in 2016, were caught off guard last Friday when their colleagues alerted them of the change. One campaign volunteer, who questioned the reasoning at the time, noted that intense humidity was the only weather-related issue on the ground and suggested that Parscale postponed the event until the campaign could guarantee larger crowds.

A spokesperson for the Trump campaign said the rally was expected to be rescheduled in the next one or two weeks, and disputed claims that it was postponed for any reason other than the forecast. The same spokesperson on Tuesday said there was nothing to announce about when the rally might be rescheduled.

President Trump and his campaign are continuing to stay engaged with both in-person and digital events, said Erin Perrine, director of press communications for the campaign. Just this week, we hit over 1 billion video views since April across all our social media platforms. Last week, President Trump hosted a roundtable in Miami, Vice President Pence had a hugely successful bus tour in Pennsylvania and Women for Trump just finished up a bus tour in Wisconsin.

New Hampshire is one of several states Trump lost in 2016 that his campaign is now eyeing to make up for potential losses elsewhere in November. His first-place finish in the states 2016 primary, followed by a narrow loss to Democrat Hillary Clinton in the general election, revealed the surprising strength of Trumps populist brand in a state known for its independent and late-breaking voters. Inside his campaign and among his supporters, Trumps Portsmouth rally was seen as a chance to restart his reelection campaign in a state that boasts a sizable population of enthusiastic MAGA fans.

President Trumps affinity to New Hampshire is because it all started here for him, and he has a loyal following here, said Corky Messner, a Trump-endorsed Republican running to unseat Democratic Sen. Jeanne Shaheen. The four electoral votes in New Hampshire could potentially be very important.

With civil libertarians, its often one-way traffic – The Age

Who are these dictators and defendersTom Switzer believes self-righteous activists are dictating to the rest of us how we should feel. I wonder who Switzer a white male and former advisor to the Howard and Abbott governments, as well as a TV talking head, a broadcaster and an editor imagines the rest of us are.

I also wonder why Switzer, on the payroll of free market think tank the Centre for Independent Studies, takes this dictatorship personally, writing: I have been denounced in these pages and elsewhere for holding unfashionable views from praising John Howard, Boris Johnson and free-market capitalism to criticising the ABC and millennial socialism and those activists who claim Australia is a racist nation.

Switzer writes that thought police are everywhere, but his commentary doesnt allow them to speak for themselves: instead they must be spoken for. The cancel-culture defenders, he writes, say attitudes have changed and that marginalised groups are starting to gain equal footing in society. Why, then, are they so afraid of a debate?

Who are these dictators and defenders, and why are oppressed mainstream media commentators such as Switzer so afraid to name them?Katherine Wilson, Healesville

Save us from the echo-chamber of cultural cleansingTom Switzer is spot on. The irony of the dangerous cancel culture movement sweeping the globe is that it risks destroying the very liberal democratic culture it seeks to cleanse.

Liberal democracies thrive in an environment of free speech, rigorous debate, respectful, robust intellectual scholarship and evidence-based discourse in which opinions stand or fall on the strength of their arguments. Thats why journalism and newspapers are the first to be attacked when demagogues stalk the land.

Nazis, by their intimidation, violence and intolerance of difference, wrote the handbook on how to destroy liberal democracy. George Orwells seminal novels Animal Farm and Nineteen Eighty-Four prophesyse about such techniques to create a totalitarian state. Orwell wrote about cancel culture in his novels well before the term was invented. Its not new.

God save us from the self-righteous echo-chamber of cultural cleansing, the stifling of proper, respectful debate and the re-writing of history. Theres an exciting chapter on the history of BLM yet to be written. Let it be written by the future and not re-written from the past.Nick Toovey, Beaumaris

Selective writing about freedom of speechTom Switzer writes selectively about freedom of speech. He fails to propose an end to defamation actions. No mention of varying degrees of anti-protest laws in jurisdictions around Australia. He fails to condemn federal government attacks on journalists. He doesnt challenge the right of employers to deny free speech to employees. What is his game?Darryl Pyrke, Blackmans Bay, Tas.

A disingenuous claimWe live in Singapore and have been planning our return home to Australia since early January, well before this ballooned into a pandemic.

We couldnt throw our Melbourne tenants out onto the street during the first lockdown, so our return was delayed until August.

It is disingenuous for Scott Morrison to claim everyone has had sufficient time families have to organise and line up employment, multiple school enrolments and rental leases.

We are happy to pay for quarantine however the latest medical evidence shows the virus is only infectious for the first eight days, so a 14-day quarantine is no longer justifiable.

I am happy with Scott Morrisons response to the pandemic but please get your facts straight before blaming, criticising and wrongfully punishing your own citizens.Richard Bourke, Singapore

A sad, but true, imageColumnist Anson Cameron (Welcome to wasteland, Spectrum, 11/7) has painted a sad, but true, image of Port Melbournes Station Pier and Waterfront Place.

For some time, the Beacon Cove Neighbourhood Association has been advocating for the revitalisation of the area by creating a precinct overseen by an independent body, bringing together all interested parties. Our proposal has been met with a lukewarm response.

Establishing a precinct run by an independent authority would result in a planned, strategic redevelopment of the area by overcoming competing forces and current restrictions and meet the needs of the residents and Victorians generally. By doing this, Melbournes gateway could be repolished and returned to a vital economic and community hub.Eddie Micallef, president, Beacon Cove Neighbourhood Association, Port Melbourne

An amazing assumptionWe are all aware of the danger of close contact with others at the moment. It is amazing that there is an assumption teachers are immune to this.

Could we not rethink the selection process for university places in 2021 (which is the reason given for the importance of year 12 students and their teachers returning to school) and simply develop a new test or requirement for entry? There are many valid examples available.

Our teachers health and wellbeing, when devoid of the protective measures utilised within the health sector, surely warrant close consideration?Julie McCormack, Brunswick West

Toxic politickingJust to remind everyone that Victorian Liberal state MP Tim Smith began this pandemic with a batty plan to remove all bats from Kew, complaints that we werent open early for Mothers Day, complaints that golfers were hard done by, and now hed like Dan Andrews to resign probably so he can crow about Andrews stepping out on Victorians during a crisis.

Smiths social media presence has been a blight on Victorian politics; I cant believe the Victorian Liberals are proud of the fact that hes one of their own. Along with his colleagues; theyve seemingly decided that supporting any lockdown and safety measures is signalling soft support for Andrews, instead of care for the community.

Its toxic politicking and all of them should hang their heads in shame and know that Dan Andrews has got more class in his little finger than all of them put together.Danielle Binks, Frankston

Surely this is good newsI have just finished reading your article about the ICU at the former Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre remaining empty ($30m ICU at former hospital still empty, 13/7).

I wouldve thought that this is good news not bad since we have not yet been overwhelmed with cases requiring ICU treatment.

It seems to me that the building of this unit ahead of time showed foresight and should not be criticised. Talk about dammed if you do and damned if you dont.

Overall Daniel Andrews and his government seem to have done a really good job in combating the coronavirus pandemic despite one or two failures and should be encouraged rather than criticised.Peter Meadley, Ballarat

Missing the pointContainment of the virus is the catch-cry of both the Education Minister and the Premier, but they are missing the point when it comes to opening schools within COVID-19 hot spots.

I am one of many teachers who commute into metropolitan hot spot schools from Ballarat, Bendigo, Geelong, Gisborne, Sunbury, Castlemaine and many smaller regional communities.

Education Minister James Merlino has not foreseen or addressed this issue. Perhaps containment of the virus to hot spots would have more chance of success if Harry Potter could cast an appropriate spell.Nick DAglas, Woodend

An unhappy shopperOn Saturday morning I went to a large supermarket in order to do some much-needed shopping for groceries.

I was disappointed given the advice from the Chief Health Officer, Brett Sutton, on Friday not to see more people wearing masks and making more of an effort to keep their distance. However, what was really concerning was that none of the staff were wearing masks and the onus was entirely on the customers as to whether or not the trolley handles were cleansed with disinfectant wipes.

If the supermarket chains CEO truly has the wellbeing of customers close to his heart as he persistently claims in his frequent emails to rewards cardholders he should act quickly to address the concerns I have raised here.Ivan Glynn, Vermont

Unfairly singled outIn Lockdown: How we stuffed it up (Naked City, The Age, 11/7), John Silvester wrote that security guards are blamed for the COVID-19 spike, although it is not clear whether he holds them accountable for the total increase of the past few weeks.

Three security companies supplied hotel quarantine guards but he only goes into detail about one firm naming it and shaming it.

While quick to disparage Unified Security, he fails to acknowledge the company was a finalist in six excellence awards from the NSW Business Chamber and Local Business Awards in 2018 and 2019, winning three.

He gives the location of the Melbourne office, cites two company cars in Indigenous livery and quotes from their website that Unified is Australias largest wholly Australian and Indigenous-owned security company. Why emphasise the Indigenous connection?

Details of the names, offices and cultural profile of the other two firms were not supplied. Are we to conclude they were blameless so not worth profiling?

Why is it acceptable to sarcastically attack Unified Security and yet a few paragraphs later say the three security companies have established track records?

The article unjustly targets one specific company in a sea of comments about the whole security industry in Australia.Sue Watson, Paynesville

Qualified supportIts a bit rich for conservative Liberal MPs and intellectuals to condemn perceived attacks on free expression when the same people hysterically attack the right of those expressing views contrary to themselves on such matters as the commemoration of Captain Cooks arrival in Australia and the celebration of Australia Day and Anzac Day.

A recent example was when some Victorian Liberal Party politicians and right-wing commentators called for the removal of Victorias Deputy Chief Health Officer, Annaliese van Diemen, for posting a controversial tweet about Captain Cook.

No right to free expression there.

And who can forget the hounding of television presenter Yassmin Abdel-Magied out of both the ABC and out of Australia after her controversial Facebook post about Anzac Day in April 2017.Garry Meller, Bentleigh

Anger and apprehensionThis lockdown round, Victorian teachers and parents are expressing anger and apprehension at the return to face-to-face schooling of VCE students. Disturbingly, there are letters with the name withheld, indicating fear not only of the virus, but of retribution for speaking out.

For many Victorians, trust in their government has taken a battering due to significant errors in its handling of the virus. Will this return to face-to-face teaching in reportedly deep-cleaned schools, with classes of 25-plus young adults, no social distancing, and masks discouraged, be another error?

Perhaps teachers and students should take it upon themselves to socially distance the classroom tables if thats even possible and wear masks?

And, perhaps teacher unions, parents, teachers, students and legal firms should be looking at possible class action should any COVID-19 cases and deaths be traced back to this return to school.Deborah Morrison, Malvern East

Breach after breachHeres an idea instead of fining people for COVID-19 regulation breaches, why not make them undertake some hours in community service at a testing station? This reality check might just shake up those foolish enough, like the car of Victorians who tried to cross the Queensland border several times and mocked the $4000 fine they were each issued, to realise this is not some joke they can laugh off.

Over the weekend I witnessed breach after breach of some of the most simple aspects of social distancing. Exceptionalism has taken hold of too many who think along the lines of oh it wont happen to me or its just a small breach, it wont make a difference or well others arent, so why should I? Just take a scroll through Instagram if you need any proof of this.

If you care about your own health and that of your friends and family, take this seriously and abide by the regulations.

If not, prepare for many, many more months of lockdown, infections and deaths.Paul Bugeja, Footscray

Stopping the spreadIf Premier Daniel Andrews wants us to follow the rules, to only go out when you need to, and to only go out for the purposes that are lawful, why are the shopping malls and retail stores open?Nadine McMaster, Port Melbourne

I agree with Andrew Gemmell (Letters, 12/7), maybe it is time masks should be worn on all forms of public transport as a courtesy to other passengers to help limit the spread of all sorts of illnesses (not just COVID-19).Maria Wickham, Mount Nelson, Tas.

Sunday on the Gardiners Creek walking loop: hundreds of people, and I counted 11 wearing masks. Not good enough, folks. We are all in this together.Brian Marshall, Ashburton

The footyIts hard to believe now but AFL used to be described as the best game in the world.John Hennessy, Glen Iris

Scott MorrisonWhile I dont begrudge our Prime Minister attending his beloved game, I am less than impressed that he was not self-distancing or wearing a mask.Susan Munday, Bentleigh East

Empty ICU bedsUntil or unless the former Peter Mac building is required for COVID-19 care (The Age, 13/7), couldnt it provide temporary housing for homeless people or those fleeing domestic violence?Mary Cole, Richmond

The fact that the emergency ICU at the old Peter Mac remains unused is a testament to the success of the initial Victorian lockdown in suppressing COVID-19. We can only hope that it remains empty.Nick Barton, Hillside

FurthermoreSo, the reason teachers are not allowed to wear masks is it stops them teaching properly. What really stops a teacher teaching is contracting COVID-19.Susan Caughey, Glen Iris

FinallyOur grandma got out her sewing machine and made individual masks for the whole family. Grandmas are beautiful people.Peter Finn, Tallarook

Rio Tinto using virtual reality glasses to get experts to the front line – Yahoo Finance UK

Mining giant Rio Tinto has been putting experts on the ground at one of its sites by using virtual reality headsets during the coronavirus pandemic, as the disease cut into production.

Staying far away from the companys copper mines in Mongolia and the US, experts have been able to weigh in remotely.

It has allowed them to get past travel restrictions caused by the Covid-19 outbreak, Rio said.

At our Oyu Tolgoi underground project in Mongolia, the use of virtual reality glasses has helped gain access to global experts to support project progression during construction and commissioning stages, the company said in an update to investors on Friday morning.

The business reported a 3% drop in the amount of copper it managed to dig out of the ground in the second quarter of the financial year.

Meanwhile, restrictions in Quebec and South Africa have meant that titanium dioxide slag production dropped 13% compared with the same period a year earlier.

Rio said Chinese customers are still demanding large amounts of iron ore, but it warned that recovery in Japan and Europe is yet to begin meaningfully and is likely to be subdued when it does.

Chief executive Jean-Sebastien Jacques said: We delivered a strong performance, particularly in iron ore and bauxite, demonstrating the underlying resilience of our business and ability to adapt in difficult conditions.

Our iron ore assets are performing well in a strong pricing environment and we are on track to meet our 2020 iron ore guidance.

Despite various Covid-19-related challenges, all our assets have continued to operate, with our first priority to protect the health and safety of all our employees and communities.

Chief executive Jean-Sebastien Jacques said Rio Tinto is trying to get on with business as usual (Dominic Lipinski/PA)

Our focus is to maintain a business-as-usual approach with many safeguards at a very unusual time.

Our operational teams are continuing to run our assets safely so we can continue to contribute to local and national economies and serve our customers.

The news comes amid a controversy surrounding the destruction by Rios miners of a 46,000-year-old indigenous cultural site at Juukan Gorge in Western Australia.

Addressing the issue, Mr Jacques said: We remain even more committed to our relationship with communities, following the Juukan Gorge events in the Pilbara, and we are engaging extensively with traditional owners around our operations and across Australia.

COVID Has Closed Theaters, But Some Actors Are Finding Work in Virtual Reality – VICE

Screen shot courtesy of Tender Claws

Theres a lot we dont know about COVID-19, but we do know one of the easiest ways to catch the virus is by spending a long time indoors with people. This puts certain businesses, like theaters, in an incredibly tough spot that seems unresolvable before a vaccine arrives. For Hollywood, one of the solutions is simply charging more for people to watch movies at home, but what about live theater? One solution: move the theater into the virtual world.

Tender Claws played with this idea last year in The Under Presents, a combination of sandbox and scripted experiences where players interacted with characters played by a mixture of pre-recorded performances and live actors interacting with players in real-time.

The Under Presents: Tempest, which launched last week for Oculus devices and is inspired by the Shakespeare play The Tempest, is a hair more ambitious. Its the same ideaa mixture of the pre-scripted and live actorsbut whats particularly unique is how Tender Claws hopes to make money. You cant experience Tempest whenever you want. Instead, like a real in-person performance, it happens at certain times and you have to buy a ticket.

We were scheduled to wrap up parts of the live component of The Under [Presents], and COVID hit, said Tender Claws founder Samatha Gorman in a recent interview. One of the things we wanted to do was to help, as theaters were shutting down, keep our actors afloat and being able to work in this environment.

In New York, Broadway will be closed the rest of the year. Its a similar situation nationwide.

$15 buys a single-use ticket for Tempest, which Tender Claws said lasts about 40 minutes. Youre matched with between six and eight others. Multiple performances are happening at the same time, and theres no way to actually sit with friends in the same performance.

Actors who participate in Tender Claws performances also strap on a headset, but the difference between players and actors is the toolset available to those in control. The options depend on the event, but actors can change their appearance, trigger events in the world, and more. Part of the challenge for actors is making accessing these tools seem natural.

The actor powers are kind of like an instrument that you pick up and learn to master, said production intern Eli Bork.

Gorman described the tools as like a puppetry rig.

You don't want to make it look like they're looking at menus on their hands, even though they're triggering a lot of the lighting, props, [and] effects, said Gorman.

In The Under Presents, which had a large undirected sandbox component, the developers basically let the actors have free reign over their appearance and how they played with the world. They went wild. In Tempest, theres more restrictions over those specific details, partially to ensure the story is told properly and partially to give actors less to worry about.

It's funny, the similarities between The Tempest being a story of an illusionist conjuring illusions, said actor Terence Leclere, whos participated in both stories by Tender Claws. And essentially, as actors, we're doing the same thing.

Leclere didnt have extensive experience with virtual reality prior to connecting with Tender Claws for The Under Presents, but importantly, Leclere had worked in immersive theater stories like The Tension Experience and Theater Macabre. Theres a lot of overlap there.

How cool and strange [that] we get to put on these VR headsets and bring to life NPCs in this multiplayer game? said Leclere, because that's basically how I approach immersive interactive events and theater experiences.

Anonymous people can be assholes, however, and virtual theaters are not immune. We spoke prior to the launch of Tempest, but the developers told me trolling wasnt a huge problem during The Under Presents. There are tools to deal with players, such as placing them in a cage for a few minutes or booting them from the story, and allowing an actor to remove themselves from a scene if they feel uncomfortable. In Tempest and The Under Presents, players cant speak. They have forms of interaction, but the actors are in control.

Theyve actually had the opposite problem, where players suspect someone is attempting to disrupt. Theyll conjure swords and shields and stand in-between the rogue player and an actor. This tends to be more disruptive than the person who may (or may not!) be goofing off.

No matter what happens in a performance, though, it has something unique in our COVID-19 world: genuine person-to-person interactions.

At first, it was a way to connect with people in a virtual landscape, eliminating distances geographically, said Leclere. But now it's even more precious because you get to connect with people in a way that is, still for now, dangerous.

The ultimate question of whether Tempest is a success, however, has much to do with accomplishing its noble and stated goal: putting money in the pockets of performers.

A Tender Claws representative told me theyve sold out of every show, and that actors are being paid at competitive rates with in-person immersive theater. The company would not elaborate on what a competitive rate is, and the numbers VICE Games heard from actors and talent managers familiar with interactive theater varied, based on geography and the size of the production. $100 per show was described as fairly average for sizable events, but its unclear whether Tempest would fall into that category.

Given Tempest just launched, it may be a little while before we have an answer.

Letter to the editor: Erasing Jenkins’ name is too much political correctness – Huntington Herald Dispatch

I am writing this in regard to the spineless pandering by Jerome A. Gilbert and the Marshall University Board of Governors. They voted not citizens, students, or alumni to change the name of Jenkins Hall because he was a Confederate officer and slaveholder.

This is pure idiocy to punish a Confederate officer 150 years after a war. This is political correctness over a fabricated sensitivity to history. What is next, the Collis P. Huntington statue, or maybe Justice Marshalls namesake? I am sick of this pandering so elites can feel better about their fabricated nonracist stance.

I tried to contact the board and the president with no results, no emails, no phone numbers. They destroy American tradition then hide and tell their families and coworkers how righteous and brave they are by doing their deeds of destruction in secrecy. I would say if a member of the Jenkins family were considering leaving a wealthy endowment to Marshall or PBS this would have never been up for a vote.

As a West Virginia citizen and Marshall graduate I request a public hearing on this attempt to whitewash our history by destroying our traditions.

This was a toned-down version of what I was going to write.

Stephen Douglas and the ‘right side’ of history – Chicago Reporter

Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan wants to remove a portrait of Stephen Douglas from the house chambers, South Side legislators want to remove a statue of Douglas atop his tomb in Bronzeville, and residents of Lawndale want to rename Douglas Park.

Those memorials should indeed be removed, though renaming the park merits a broader discussion. And its a bit rich seeing Madigan whos made millions from a biased property tax system, and who unlike Douglas never took a political risk in his entire career wrap himself in political correctness. Acts of symbolism shouldnt take the place of real substantive change thats needed in Springfield.

Famous for defeating Abraham Lincoln in the 1858 U.S. Senate campaign and losing to him in the presidential contest two years later, Douglas believed in white supremacy, opposed the abolition of slavery and basic civil rights for Blacks, and profited from a slave plantation in Mississippi that his wife inherited from her father.

Of course, no one is suggesting erasing him from the history books. Douglas was a national political leader whose career offers insights into the way history works, including how a crisis can develop from a basic contradiction in this case, slavery versus democracy, even a highly limited version of democracy and how that can bring disparate forces into common cause.

In the decade before the Civil War, Douglas sought compromise with the southern slave states but ended up in conflict with them. And despite his racism, he didnt shy from that conflict.

As the leading northern Democrat in Congress, Douglas sponsored the Compromise of 1850, which included the Fugitive Slave Law putting northerners in the position of slave-catchers and provoking resistance which sometimes boiled over into riots and revolts in northern cities.

A few years later, Douglas sponsored the Kansas-Nebraska Act, leaving the question of whether the states would allow slavery up to local voters. This reflected Douglass doctrine of popular sovereignty. Slave states rejected the concept, since slave-owners were not eager to move into newly-forming states where the possibility of outlawing slavery existed.

Again, the measure failed to conciliate sectional discord. Instead it led to brutal battles between pro- and anti-slavery settlers in Bleeding Kansas, which riled up both abolitionists and northern Free Soilers, who didnt directly oppose slavery in the South but wanted it excluded from new territories in the West.

In 1857, a small group of pro-slavery Kansans passed the Lecompton Constitution establishing slavery in Kansas, and Democratic President James Buchanan accepted the constitution, declaring Kansas as much a slave state as Georgia and South Carolina. Douglas dramatically broke with the Democratic administration, calling the constitution a fraudulent submission and siding with congressional Republicans to oppose its ratification.

In 1857, the U.S. Supreme Court issued the odious Dred Scott decision, declaring that African Americans had no right to U.S. citizenship and that states had no power to exclude slavery from their own borders. After initially urging respect for the decision, Douglas challenged it the next year in his debates with Lincoln. His Freeport Doctrine argued states did have the power to reject slavery. Southern Democrats termed it the Freeport Heresy.

These issues came to a head in the 1860 Democratic National Convention in Charleston, South Carolina. Southern delegates demanded a platform endorsing the Dred Scott decision and supporting legislation protecting slavery in future states. The Douglas Democrats refused to accept these demands not out of principle, but because they knew they would turn northern voters against the party. The southerners walked out and nominated a competing candidate for president. That probably ended Douglass presidential hopes.

During the campaign, Douglas warned of the danger of secession and spoke strongly against it. In North Carolina he called for hanging every man who takes up arms against [the Constitution]. By October, it was clear Douglas had no path to electoral victory, and he changed tack, travelling to Missouri, Tennessee, Georgia and Alabama to campaign not for his election but against secession.

After Lincoln was inaugurated and Charleston was shelled by Confederate forces, the new president consulted his old rival over the proclamation he was issuing. Douglas said he approved every word except instead of calling for 75,000 volunteers to fight for the Union, he urged Lincoln to call for 200,000.

In contrast to northern Peace Democrats, Douglas helped bring his constituency in some respects similar to Lincolns, homesteaders and family farmers who feared competition from slave labor to support the fight against the Confederacy. Ultimately that fight required a range of forces, from enslaved people who revolted against their bondage and abolitionists to Free Soilers and Douglas-style Unionists.

All fought and died by the thousands to put down the slaveowners revolt. And we have far to go to recognize the contributions of those historymakers who werent white male generals and politicians. We also need to recognize the great tragedy of the Civil War, the abandonment of Reconstruction efforts to build real democracy in the South, which reflected the failure to overcome the ideology of white supremacy that Douglas always maintained.

For activists today, the complexity of this history may hold lessons about the path forward, and the way people with a variety of viewpoints come together in a common cause. It may well turn out that both police abolitionists and Black police officers challenging anti-reform unions along with many others are contributing to progress. There are also lessons about not settling for half measures based on outmoded ways of thinking, about pushing through to real change.

As for the memorials, the huge statue of Douglas in Bronzeville is objectionable to many neighborhood residents. At Douglas Park on the West Side, many have suggested adding an s to the parks name and rededicating it to Frederick Douglass. That has obvious appeal, but Im not sure its necessarily the best way to go.

It was, in fact, in another great Chicago park that Frederick Douglass played a prominent historical role. It was in Jackson Park that he represented Haiti, the only Black nation in the 1892 Columbian Exposition, and it was there that he gave a famous address challenging the United States to live up to its Constitution. He also collaborated with Ida B. Wells on a pamphlet exposing the exclusion of African Americans from the Columbian Exposition.

But the park is, of course, named for Andrew Jackson, another contradictory historical figure. By the standards of white male politics of the time, he was progressive, even radical, supporting expansion of the electoral franchise beyond property owners and abolition of imprisonment for debt, opposing banks and corporations, and reorienting government to serve his conception of the common man.

He was also a racist, a slaveowner, and the perpetrator of perhaps the greatest act of ethnic cleansing in American history, the atrocity known as the Trail of Tears.

But the democratic impulse he helped set in motion however limited in its original scope is credited by some historians with widening influence over subsequent decades. Northern Jacksonian radicals, including some of the former presidents top allies, launched the Free Soil Party and were a major force in founding the Republican Party.

A complex historical legacy, arguably but as an individual, Jacksons crimes and his record of cruelty are of such magnitude as to outweigh anything else. I say rename Jackson Park for Frederick Douglass. And put Harriet Tubman on the ten-dollar bill.

As for Douglas Park, perhaps it should be renamed for a great West Sider. I would suggest Richard Barnett, the legendary independent political organizer, who played a major role laying the groundwork for Harold Washingtons election as mayor in 1983. Barnetts activism started in the 1950s with a baseball league for neighborhood youth and a fight for a decent playing field in Lawndale, the neighborhood where Douglas Park is located.

And if Madigan really wants to get on the right side of history, he should address himself to what may be the single most important reform the legislature could accomplish right now: amending the state law that gives extraordinary protections to police officers accused of misconduct, and changing collective bargaining legislation to limit police unions ability to negotiate over provisions that enshrine the code of silence.

That would take some guts especially given longtime support for Madigan by the Fraternal Order of Police and it would accomplish a lot more than moving a painting.

His View: Republicans are winning the rhetorical war – Moscow-Pullman Daily News

The headline, Im done with all you Americans hating on America, on a recent Lewiston Tribune column by Jeff Sayre prompts me to advise liberals that conservatives are winning the rhetorical battles in Americas political war.

Both liberals and conservatives are using rhetoric that appeals to their bases. This is one of many reasons for todays dysfunctional polar divide.

Politicians at opposite poles dont know what rhetoric will convince voters in the middle, which both need to win elections in our times. Trying to persuade voters at the opposite pole seems beyond reach.

Consequently, both conservatives and liberals fire salvos of rhetoric that appeals only to their base without hope of inviting the consideration of citizens at the other pole.

Anna M. Kuritzkes put her finger on it in an op-ed, Liberal Rhetoric is Intellectually Exclusive, published Oct. 3, 2017, in the Harvard Crimson. She credited President Donald Trumps 2016 victory to catchphrase rhetoric that is easily digestible by his base.

Liberals, she wrote, use rhetoric that is intellectual, pretentious and inherently exclusive. Even worse, the language we use to explain identity politics can be blatantly condescending.

Yes, Kuritzkes is a liberal.

While she says liberals shouldnt resort to name-calling, like President Trump calling Kim Jon Un Rocket Man, she enjoins liberals to change their rhetoric: if liberals want to make political correctness and identity politics politically viable for the general American public, we need to find a way to condense our message. ... Otherwise, it will forever be limited to colleges where expressions such as cissexist heteropatriarchy are part of the common vocabulary.

Liberals, are you listening?

Now, back to Sayres column, which clearly demonstrates the rhetoric that wins the heart of conservatives. The president proudly proclaims that he thinks with his guts. Perhaps I should use one of President Trumps rhetorical bombs to describe how to appeal to conservatives with gut thinking.

Sayre claims that liberals hate this country.

Thats good gut vocabulary. Conservatives lap it right up. Ive never heard a liberal say conservatives hate America. Or that people who dont agree with them should leave America?

Perhaps its about time for liberals to reach deep down into their guts for rhetoric that appeals to conservatives.

Sayre anguished that he is done with hearing politicians calling criminals virtuous. Apparently hes forgotten that it was his beloved president who responded that some white nationalists and neo-Nazis involved in a United the Right rally in Charlottesville, Va., were very good people.

He had just condemned white supremacists, the Ku Klux Klan, and neo-Nazis, thus he effectively softened his condemnation.

Sayre wrote, Im done with being told our problems are systemic by people who dont know the definition of the word.

Does Sayre know the definition? Or is he just in denial that systemic racism exists in American institutions?

Systemic defines characteristics relating to an entire system. In this instance, American government and business.

The medical use describes something that relates to, or affects, the entire body.

Sayres rejection of systemic racism is a classic example of liberals problem with rhetoric. The word systemic doesnt rise from the gut. It is an intellectual word formed in the brain.

Thats not to say there arent intellectual conservatives.

There certainly are, but they dont express themselves with intestinal rhetoric: words and phrases like Stalinist Communist Party thugs, as applied to liberal Americans. A favorite is the socialist label applied to capitalistic programs like health insurance. Rhetoric is speech or writing intended to persuade. The challenge for liberals is to tone down their highfalutin rhetoric, which serves mainly to turn off the audience to whom they address.

It is irrational to address conservatives who have made it abundantly clear that they communicate from their guts with intellectual rhetoric.

Masks around the neck

Saw the Tallahassee Nights performance Saturday evening. All them people wearing masks around their necks, that was a fashion statement. Nothing more. The masks I saw didn't slow the virus spread one little bit. Those complaining about others not wearing masks, what good does it do to wear it around your neck?

Turning Point

Well, well. Now we have a lawsuit that confirms what we all knew. Turning Point pays addicts and drunks to come to Moultrie, bills Medicare (us) and dumps them on the streets of Moultrie for us to contend. Thanks TP and a former man of the year for the damage to Moultrie.

Their people

About the City Council Members representing their people to the exclusion of all others, Moultrie's City Council has always been that way. Many run for those seats solely to represent and help their people and only their people. That's long standing tradition in Moultrie. As common as ticks on a dog's belly. That's why I'll never live in Moultrie.

Golf carts

The point I was trying to make about the children that were on Smithwick Bridge Road was missed.

As a farm worker I was coming over a hill. The golf card was in middle of road with 4 children.

I would be the one having to live with the fact I hit 4 children. Think here Its about children.

You have options

If you don't like the fact that your barber wasn't wearing a mask, then cut your own hair!

New team name

I got it, I got it! The new name should be the Washington Social Equalizers. It's got a good ring to it.

Mask hysteria

Some of us don't wear masks because we don't believe the mask hysteria. You do as you please, likewise for me. You didn't wear masks for decades during flu seasons, now you can't understand why people will not wear a mask. I admire your political correctness. You've kissed Al's ring like a good little Democrat, now run along and play.

False history

Southern Blacks did not fight for the Confederacy. That is a myth. I know history means something different for people who still think Confederate monuments were put up to honor Southern heritage. But in the universe of facts, this is a falsehood. Thank you for the attempted history lesson though.

Roger Stone

Pelosi said Trump's commuting Roger Stone's sentence was a threat to national security. Huh? This old attorney, suddenly, threatens national security? Who knew? ... and when? Now Schiff is saying it's an impeachable offense. Seriously? Obama commuted and pardoned over 1,900 people, and none of those were impeachable nor threats to national security. Typical Democrats.

Trump doesnt help

Instead of trying to help open up schools, this President does what he always does: bully by threatening to take funding. If it is not safe, bully all you want. Do not put childrens lives in danger so he can get the economy that he wants for re-election. Our children are not for sale. Wear a mask, people. God bless!

Changing goals

Initially, the virus pandemic goal was to flatten the curve. When that was accomplished, the goal changed to increase testing, so we quadrupled testing nationwide. When that was accomplished, the goal changed to fight a second wave. At each goal's accomplishment, Democrats change the goal. Those controlling this narrative are the ones trying to control the November election.

Why now, Biden?

Why didn't Joe Biden implement his great ideas for America during his 8 years in the White House or during his 36 years as Delaware's Senator? Suddenly he wants to help America at age 78? Seriously? Did it take Joe 47 years to come up with his new economic plan, which is essentially a huge tax increase. Why now, Joe?

Gun violence

Some advocate having a conversation about gun violence but won't dare talk to shooters; they only want to talk to law abiding citizens about giving up their guns. The reason that conversation won't happen is because those people, always Democrats of course, only want the conversation started so they can take guns away. We see through liberal's game plans.

Wisconsin radiology practice sues Ascension after hospital giant switches to out-of-state imaging partner – Radiology Business

A Wisconsin radiology practice is suing hospital giant Ascension after the company switched to an out-of-state imaging services provider earlier this year.

Milwaukee Radiologists Ltd. recently filed its claim against the Catholic health system in the local circuit court. Leaders are seeking a binding judgment against Ascension Wisconsin and its predecessor Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare, the Milwaukee Business Journal reported Monday.

The Greenfield-based provideraround since 1969, employing 19 physiciansclaims that a new joint-venture agreement signed by Ascension earlier this year violates its contract with Milwaukee Radiologists. Rather than immediately switching to a new deal with Premier Radiology in Nashville, the local practice alleges Ascension was supposed to execute a staggered, multi-year phase-out of their relationship through 2026.

It was back in February that Ascension first announced its new imaging partnership with Premier. At the time, the two said they had already opened a freestanding imaging center in the town of Mount Pleasant, and more were in the works in Milwaukee, Glendale, Franklin,Wauwatosa and Brown Deer.

Time for CARICOM to up the Reparations ante! – The Voice St. Lucia

Last Saturday morning I watched and listened to a video recording of Britains High Commissioner to Jamaica, Asif Ahmad, laying out, as best he could, Her Majestys Governments official positions on issues relating to slavery, reparations, the global reverberations from the Black Lives Matter protests, actions against offensive statues, renaming of institutions and places named after promoters and defenders of slavery and racism during colonialism and the myriad of issues put to him during the discussion on Challenging the symbols of oppression.

The discussion was spurred by the Jamaica governments decision to suspend use of a medal awarded by Her Majesty to loyal British subjects for splendid services rendered to the Crown, because it was belatedly discovered, in the wake of the George Floyd death, that this particular medal bears a symbol of a white angel standing over a black devil.

High Commissioner Ahmad is partly of Pakistani origin, which helped color his dissertations in the eyes of many watching in Jamaica and listening to a blue-blooded brown-skinned Englishman explaining Her Majestys Governments positions on CARICOM nations joint call for Reparations from Britain and the European Union (EU) member-states involved for centuries of Slavery and Native Genocide in the Caribbean.

As I watched, my mind drifted to those times often recorded in history when the house slaves could always be depended upon to best explain to fellow slaves why Massa is good and Slavery is better.

Id heard declarations of Britains positions on slavery and reparations before, but never like this from a representative of the brown and black British minority, the descendants, heirs and successors of Indian and African immigrants to Britain.

He spoke in Jamaica, where Britain left 60 percent of its loyal colonial island subjects illiterate at independence, where African descendants are in the vast majority and the government and opposition are both in support of pursuing reparations.

Id heard worse from the mouths of those whose minds and hands actually drove and drive the policies that High Commissioner Ahmad so dutifully espoused.

When British PM David Cameron visited Jamaica in 2015 to ask CARICOM leaders to forget the past and lets move on with 350 million devalued pounds worth of peanuts on the table to be shared between 14 countries as adequate compensation for over 400 years of slavery and native genocide, he knew more than anyone else that his slave-owning ancestral family not only owned over 500 slaves in Jamaica, but had also benefitted immensely from the 20 million pounds (worth over 300 billion pounds sterling today) that they were compensated over time for loss of their slaves and property. He knew too that the British government had only finished paying that hefty amount in 2015, the same year he visited Kingston and requested that it use part of its share of the peanuts to build prisons to house Jamaican immigrants his Conservative Party was most likely, with the benefit of hindsight, already planning to send back home through mass deportation of the Windrush generation.

When PM Theresa May replaced David Cameron with a promise to deliver on the Brexit that her party had opposed in the national referendum and lost by a razor-thin but large dividing margin, her very first announcement was that she would assign 30 million pounds to the fight against Modern Slavery. Mrs May showed no interest in Britains role in and responsibility for the atrocities associated with the original Atlantic Slave Trade, acknowledged as the Greatest Crime Against Humanity, during which at least 30 million Africans were shipped through the infamous Middle Passage to Europes West Indian (Caribbean) colonies. But it didnt take long to see that her declaration was no more than just that. Modern slavery lived on happily in the UK while Prime Minister May held on firmly to the British position that it would not apologize or atone, in any way, for its role as an architect of and benefactor from the criminal transatlantic slave trade, as both the original and final ports of call in the so-called Great Triangle.

Just as Mrs May ousted Cameron over Brexit, she too was outfoxed by Boris Johnson, whose position on slavery and colonialism was spelt out decades ago when he covered the European Union as a journalist and held that Britain should never have left Africa. His response in office today to the Black Lives Matter protests across the UK and targeting of statues of racist and colonial figures has reinforced that the current British PM, like his two predecessors, also maintains that Britain should simply not apologize for slavery, lest it legally bind itself to paying for its past sins of commission and omission.

All three PMs Cameron, May and Johnson were in office after the CARICOM nations in July 2013 established the Commission (CRC) and immediately requested dialogue with Britain and the EU regarding reparations for slavery and native genocide. Seven years later, London and Brussels have simply refused to even formally reply, far less agree, to the joint request of the leaders of 14 former mainly British, French, Dutch, Portuguese, Spanish, Italian and Scandinavian colonies that are now sovereign states and members of the United Nations (UN) and the British Commonwealth.

The faithful deliverer of Downing Streets message in Jamaica was no different from that consistently sent out by Britain since 2013 in response to issues like slavery and reparations and in defense of symbols of the Empire.

Its all in keeping with Britains strategy over time to maintain its position as a leading European nation with the wealth it gained from slavery and the industrial revolution that followed its involvement in the capture and export of over 12 million African slaves, over three million of whom were shipped on British vessels, insured by the likes of Lloyds of London, Barclays Bank, HSBC and others still very much alive today.

The abolition of slavery did not in any way affect Britains plans for expansion beyond the royal realm. In the 19th Century, Queen Victoria expanded Britains influence across Europe by marrying her nine children into other European royal families in Germany, Russia, Spain and other parts of the continent, some eventually ending-up fighting on opposing sides after she died, during the First World War.

Several decades later when Britains African, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) colonies started gaining independence, London created the British Commonwealth, with Queen Elizabeth II as the eternal head, to keep the new sovereign states within the Royal realm.

The nations seeking reparations for slavery and native genocide are only asking for Britain to act in like manner as when it paid slave owners for the losses after abolition; and which France happily extorted from Haiti by way of reparations for loss of French planters properties and slaves as a result of the 1804 Revolution, which debt Haiti only finished paying in 1947.

Balance of rights

Im anti big government.

Im for free speech

Im all for peaceful protests

I support the right of ALL people to live, work and play in a racist- and bigoted-free world.

I support the idea that a system of law and order as mandated by the majority of people is the foundation for a peaceful and successful society.

I support the fight to prevent the spread of COVID-19 by mandating that face masks be required if you are out in public places and cannot maintain social distancing.

I support the right of people to disagree, but would support a government initiative to make wearing of masks mandatory based on the recommendations by medical/scientific professionals.

I support the right for people to point out that my first sentence is in conflict with a government mandating mask wearing, but my fifth sentence deals with this. Im convinced that the majority of Canadians would agree.

Malcolm F. Brown, Dartmouth

Normally, I would not counter an opinion letter to the editor, because I believe everyone has the right to express an opinion, but Gavin Giles criticism (Stop sniping from sidelines, July 6) of Professor Tom Urbaniak requires examination.

Urbaniak does not snipe from the cheap seats, as Giles put it in his letter. He suggests that this highly qualified professor somehow does not have the right to be critical of our government. Because of Urbaniaks depth of knowledge in political science and government, he is more capable than most to see flaws. And we are lucky he shares his insight with the public.

Urbaniak understands government structures that are intended to promote the democratic process. Premier Stephen McNeils authoritarian proclivity has been evident time and time again throughout his two mandates. His centralization policies, use of legislation to abort collective bargaining, shut-out of the media, contempt for elected opposition MLSs, his hyper-control of ministers and neutralization of committees have culminated in government by one or two people.

Giles letter supports unilateral decision-making. But the best decisions are made through a democratic process, where all the players get to participate, because the wisdom is in the group. And Tom Urbaniak understands this.

Jane MacNeill, Ben Eoin

On July 1, in your article Hundreds take to Halifax streets with Indigenous activists, your photo script stated calling for an end to apartheid in Palestine.

The term apartheid is from the Afrikaans word for apartness. It was a policy via legislation for strict racial segregation and discrimination. It was best illustrated in South Africa, where it obtained a meaning of hardhearted oppression. South African Judge Richard Goldstone wrote in October, 2011, while there exists a degree of separation between Israeli Jews and the Arabs in Israel, there is no apartheid. Nothing there comes close to the definition of apartheid under the 1998 Rome Statute.

Concerning the territories, Goldstone wrote that the situation is more complex. But here, too, there is no intent to maintain an institutionalized regime of systematic oppression and domination by one racial group. Goldstone also wrote in that New York Times article, the charge that Israel is an apartheid state is a false and malicious one, that precludes, rather than promotes, peace and harmony.

To claim that apartheid is going on in that land is a war propaganda phrase, which tries to portray the war as a quasi civil rights dispute and has the purpose of delegitimizing Israel.

All of Lansing must work to protect Black, Indigenous and other people of color – Lansing State Journal

Jessica Yorko, guest writer Published 12:18 p.m. ET July 16, 2020 | Updated 3:09 p.m. ET July 17, 2020

A palpable power shift is underway in our nation and community. We stand at the precipice of bending the arc of the universe towards justice for centuries to come.

Listen and you will hear grief, frustration, exhaustion, pain and uncertainty. Look and you will see courage in the face of great risk, soul searching, glimmers of reckonings and comeuppances, healing spaces for people harmed by anti-Blackness and refrains of Time's Up on Racism.

You will also see head-ducking, blame-shifting and doubling down on racism.

When we look back on this moment in history, what will we say about the role we played? Did we bear witness to pain and injustices that have gone unseen and unheard for far too long? Did we amplify the truths being elevated in this moment? Did we create accountability to Black, Indigenous and other people of color in all levels of government and society?

How are we, as white individuals, taking responsibility for harms we have caused to Black people and other people of color, regardless of intent? Do we have the humility and resilience to hear things that need to be said while working towards reconciliation and reparation? How do we listen and truly value the myriad Black and brown voices and lives in our community loud and quiet; rich and poor; queer and straight; transgender, non-binary and cis-gender; office-holders and private citizens; young and old?

Are we willing to talk about eliminating government-sanctioned use of captivity and lethal force against fellow humans?

Are we willing to re-envision government so it no longer includes institutions created to keep people in captivity? Captivity that, per the 13th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, allows for the ongoing, legalized use of free labor (also known as slavery) among incarcerated peoplewho are disproportionately Black and brown?

What are our reservations, fears and concerns about eliminating vestiges and tools of human enslavement in our nation?

Lansing can seize this moment to abolish and restructure the systems that repress, subjugate, terrorize and murder Black and brown people. Lansing residents are leading a movement that re-envisions government structures, policies and budgets to eliminate racial oppression.

When you look back on this moment, what will you say about your role? Were you an accomplice in eliminating human enslavement? Or are you a sympathizer with those fighting to maintain the status quo of legal enslavement and use of deadly force against fellow humans?

I implore the people of this city, elected and otherwise, to look deep within themselves, seize this moment and work together until thatbright day of justice emerges.

The status quo has never been good enough. We owe it to ourselves and to each other to do better. We have a clear road map and mandate to do better. Followingthat road map is not only the work ofBlack and brown people. It is incumbent upon each of us to seize this moment and bend the arc toward justice.
