The Battle of the Mind – THISDAY Newspapers

By HRH Appolus Chu

There is a battle raging in the life of every human being today. It is a battle that has lasted since the beginning of time. This battle affects every family, neighbourhood, community, society, and nation. Walk into any organization or gathering of people, and the battle is there. Friends and loved ones may smile at one another; but they are all locked in this fierce battle.

It is the battle of the mind.

What is the Mind?

Defining the mind and its location is one problem that has lasted for thousands of years, beginning with the ancient Greek philosophers who saw the mind as Nous or controller of all things. By the 1600s, French Mathematician, Rene Descartes perhaps influenced by the religious bent of his time defined the mind as the real person with his now famous quote, I think therefore I exist.

Descartes position opened the gates to a new wave of questions about mind and body, appearance and reality, rationalism and empiricism. Today, scientists (who are empirical in their study), argue that the mind is nothing more than brain processes. They say these processes come from what we see, hear, touch, smell, taste, and other non-sensory impulses from the cells of our bodies.

Just as there is no single definition of what the mind is, so too there is no agreement about the location of the mind. Is it in the brain, heart, cells of the body or somewhere outside the body? No one knows for sure. No human eye has ever seen the mind. No microscope, x-ray or scanning machine, no matter how powerful and sophisticated, can see it.

Despite the complications in defining the mind and pinpointing its exact location, one thing that scientists, philosophers and religious theorists agree on is that the mind does exist. The mind is the thinking, conscious part of the human being and every one of us has a mind.

The mind is as wide and complex as the universe, with billions of information travelling through it like countless stars and galaxies travelling through the universe. The mind constantly receives different and usually conflicting or opposing thoughts on any and every subject. It is the clash of these conflicting thoughts (the mental debates about which thought to choose), that is referred to as the battle of the mind.

In other words, the battle of the mind is the struggle that goes on in our minds about the choices we should make in every given situation.

If we make the right choice, we manifest right actions. If we choose wrongly, we manifest wrong actions. What we call choices begin as thoughts in our minds. It is in the mind that we struggle between good and bad thoughts, right or wrong choices.

The Mind and the Will

The human mind is also the seat of the will, and Dr. Myles Munroe once said, The will is the greatest and most dangerous gift given to you, by God. It is your will that determines the choices you make. Your ability to choose is what makes you uniquely human.

Your power of choice is what distinguishes you from a machine or an animal. Machines, including robots and computers, can do great and amazing things; yet they can do nothing without being programmed or commanded. They cannot choose what they do. Animals, on the other hand, may act without being programmed like machines, but they also do not have the power of choice. Animals are motivated to act by their appetites and emotions. They eat when they are hungry, sleep when they are sleepy, and mate when it is their season to do so.

You are different.

Yes, you have emotions and appetites, like animals; but you also have the ability to choose to do the opposite of whatever your appetites and emotions suggest, at any given time. As important as your appetites and emotions may be, it is the choices you make, choices which stem from your will controlled by your mind that determine the course of your life. So, it is your mind that controls your life.

Indeed, everything around us all the great inventions that make life worth living, as well as the wars and violence that threaten to destroy the world are products of the mind. That is because the mind has the ability to accommodate and stimulate many things, both good and bad.

Where do Thoughts come from?

The mind is the generating station for our thoughts. Thinking is done in the mind. It is also in the mind that we have our consciousness, and form ideas, opinions, impressions about anything. When our thoughts stir us strongly enough they can stimulate our emotions, and our stimulated emotions have the power to spur us into action. Action can be positive or negative. Our actions, whether positive or negative, have corresponding effect on society.

So, thoughts are generated in the mind, but they can be stimulated by one or all of the following:

Words: Words are the foods that nourish the mind. Words are powerful. The words you hear and the people you listen to, will determine the course of your life. So, never underestimate the words of a person. Many lives have been ruined because of the words they heard and the people they listened to. Some young people are locked away in prison because of the friends they kept and the words those friends kept feeding into their minds.

Words convey ideas and information, and the mind has the ability to quickly soak up information like a sponge soaks up water. In this age of Information Technology, high-speed Internet connectivity, and 24-hour cable television, the mind is constantly being stimulated by words from all angles like a receiver-station, receiving both good and bad information from everywhere. So, watch what you hear!

What you hear will make you or destroy you. It will elevate you or demote you. People sit in classrooms, listening to professors and teachers for years, and they graduate as lawyers, doctors, engineers, teachers, accountants, and the like. It is the words they listened to that made them so. Sports men and women may be talented at what they do, but hardly does any talented athlete go on to become a champion or Olympic winner without listening to, and training in line with the words of their coaches.

Other people sat around criminals, drug dealers and addicts, alcoholics and today they are wondering why they are in jail while their former childhood friends are career professionals and sport stars.

Countries, businesses, and communities are great or mediocre, poor or rich, as a result of the words of their leaders. The story is often told of how, upon inauguration as President of the United States, the late John F. Kennedy told his countrymen that they would work to put a man on the moon within ten years. President Kennedy did not live through his first tenure as president, but within eight years of speaking those words, Neil Armstrong planted the American flag on the moon.

Which words are you listening to? Never take any word that anybody speaks for granted, because words are seeds and seeds never die. You may lock up a seed in a bottle for years and years, but the moment you expose it to favourable environment, it will begin to grow. Some strange actions that you are exhibiting now, may be the effect of words that you have stored up in your mind for years.

Images: Apart from the words you hear, your thoughts can also come from the images you see from billboards, television and real life. For example, a person may see a flashy car on the road, and that image sends an instant message to the mind. The person begins to desire to own that very car or one like it. If the desire for the car gets so strong that the person begins to think of doing anything including crime to get the car, that is wrong.

Another thought will arise in the persons mind to counteract that first negative thought of doing anything to get the car. That clash of thoughts is what the battle of the mind is about. That battle would not have arisen if the person never saw the car in the first place.

You need to be careful about the things you see. Discerning parents know this, and so they do their best to control the kinds of things especially movies that their children see. If they notice certain images or scenes on the screen, they quickly switch off the television set or ask the children to leave the environment. That is because they do not want to expose the tender minds of their young children to information that can poison the mind.

The Environment: The environment where a person lives, the people the person mixes with, can also influence the thoughts of the person. The environment exerts influence on the mind in two ways the things children learn from observing their parents (or the young from the old), and the need to be like our friends (or peer pressure).

Terrorism is a big problem in the world today. Young people are joining militant groups and perpetrating all sorts of atrocities. That is because of the environmental influences controlling and shaping their minds. Lots of people have been brain-washed into actions that are inimical to their own welfare as a result of negative indoctrination. Why would a person willingly become a suicide bomber, if not for the negative indoctrination the mind of such a person has received from the environment?

Those who keep the company of smokers, alcoholics, drug addicts and peddlers or prostitutes, sometimes end up doing those same things. That is because were in environments where the friends and people they spent time with, engaged in such acts. They may have started out struggling against doing such things, but because they remained in that environment, they eventually succumbed to its negative influence.

The Nigerian society is today plagued with insecurity from the actions of Boko Haram, Killer Herdsmen, motorcycle bandits, ritual killers and kidnappers. We complain that our elections are not free and fair as a result of electoral violence, snatching of ballot boxes, and rigging of votes. Fraudsters, armed robbers, rapists, and other classes of criminals harass society on a daily basis. Some public officers loot the public treasury, greedy government officials look for means to extort money from people; cult members, gang members and thugs, look for ways to subvert the law for their own selfish interests. All these fall into the category of people who were brain-washed into making wrong choices by the environments they exposed themselves to.

What a person hears, sees, and imbibes from the environment can either nourish or poison the mind. That poisoning can be against his brother or sister, employers or job. A persons mind can even be poisoned against his or her own self. It all depends on the kind of information that is allowed to influence the mind. A poisoned mind is a danger to the individual, the family, and the society at large.

Control your Mind by Controlling your Consciousness

If you must avoid the negative influences of words, images and the environment on your mind, you need to learn how to control your mind. The term, mind control, is often used negatively to imply brain-washing a person or getting the person to do what someone else wants.

To subdue a fierce, violent, and very angry person all you need to do is subdue his mind. In the same way a calm and gentle person who does not look capable of hurting a fly, can suddenly become wild by the messages fed into the persons mind. If you want to provoke any kind of response in a person whether to become wild and aggressive or mild and submissive all you need to do is control the mind of the person.

A practical example of the importance of mind control can be seen in construction sites. Before the work of the day commences, the company assembles the workers and gives them health, security and safety induction. They do not assume that because they told the workers what they needed to know yesterday, they have no need for the information today. No! They tell them the same things over and over again. By so doing, they help to ensure that the workers are always cautious and conscious of whatever they are doing on the site. The management of the company does not toy with such daily induction. They know that without it the workers may forget what they need to know about safety on site, work procedure, and other requirements for their safety and operational success. Without such daily induction the minds of the workers could easily become occupied with other things resulting in damage to the project with the possibility of harm to the personnel.

Despite that negative connotation associated with mind control, the fact remains that it is only by consciously controlling or grooming your mind that you can ensure that your thoughts and corresponding actions are always right. So, how can you control your mind?

To control your mind, you have to consciously stabilize your thoughts by focusing on what you really desire. In other words, it is by being conscious (hence mindful) of the right things at all times and doing your best to do them. Your consciousness helps build a wall around or control your mind, so that you do not give in to the excesses of the mind. Your consciousness helps you direct your mind aright. A mind that is not controlled by consciousness is exposed to danger. Consciousness, which breeds self-discipline, is a sure means of controlling the mind and leading it to right decisions and in the right direction.

Religious faiths and organizations across the world need to be praised for regularly engaging their adherents with programmes geared towards helping them control their minds aright. These programmes can be likened to inductions, which equip the people small and big, rich and poor, old and young, high and low with tools for controlling their minds.

So, religion is all about putting the mind under control so that the individual can live a life that is meaningful to self, society, and humanity.

If religion helps people control their own minds so they dont tilt towards negative thoughts and choices, rehabilitation is one way of helping those who have derailed to once again regain control of their minds. That is why people whose minds have been captured by one addiction or the other are checked into rehabilitation homes. The aim of such rehabilitation is to expose the persons to information and environments that would help them regain control of their minds so they dont end up lost to society and themselves.

Prisons are a type of rehabilitation centres. Prisons are not only places to punish and correct criminals, but also where they can be helped to regain right control of their consciousness so as to be able to win the battle of the mind.

Groom your Consciousness to Maturity

A person whose consciousness is alive and strong is able to caution his or herself to avoid or stay away from environments, words and images that could corrupt, pollute or poison the mind. Those who are able to control their own minds are the ones we refer to as being mature.

Mature leaders do not divulge every kind of information to their communities or followers. They know that it isnt everyone in the community or among their followers who has the mental capacity to handle certain information. They know that giving certain information to the immature is a sure way of throwing the whole community into panic and confusion. All information is not meant for everybody. Some information is classified and meant for only a particular person or group. There is information that the president of a country can never share with a spouse or cabinet members, much less the general public.

The thoughts of the mind in the wrong direction are responsible for all the evils around us. An assassin, for example, is a person who has consistently chosen to give in to the negative thoughts to kill people. In the same way, all the great inventions, scientific innovations, exploitation of the resources of the earth for the betterment of man, great buildings like sky-scrappers that solve mans housing needs, are products of the thoughts of the mind in the right direction.

The world is a clash of good and evil. While the good are thinking of improving the many, the evil are consumed with thoughts of how a few can conquer the many for their own selfish ends. If the minds of the evil are not brought into control, they could do great havoc to humanity.

It is for that reason that governments, everywhere, have established security systems and laws to help control the excesses of the evil ones. Laws and security apparatus do not tell people not to commit crimes. They only show the people what awaits them if they choose to commit crime.

The law on its own does not stop a kidnapper from operating. But the kidnapper will have to face the consequences of his choice when caught. So the law, policies of state and security apparatus are designed to help citizens make the right choices, thereby controlling their minds, by becoming conscious of the consequences of their actions.

Some people have trained their minds towards being a help to society. They do their best to render assistance to others whenever they can. Initially, its a battle because the natural instinct of man is self-first. It is natural for human beings to think of their own wellbeing and self-satisfaction before considering others if they bother to consider others at all. But always putting oneself first, breeds problems for society and is not conducive for social wellbeing.

The mature ones who understand this fact fight to conquer those thoughts of selfishness in their minds and replace them with thoughts of selflessness. When they win that battle between thoughts of selfishness versus selflessness, it manifests in the altruistic and good deeds they do for others. These people strive to do good at all times.

If they serve in establishments, they serve without expecting favours from anyone, but for the betterment of the establishment and the people they interact with. If their job is to process peoples files for jobs or promotion, they do it speedily and without any inducement from the people involved.

Such people shy away from doing anything that would inflict pain on others. By persisting in doing good to others, they conquer that part of their minds that longs to be selfish, or bad towards others.

Like the good learns to conquer the negative, selfish and wrong thoughts of their minds with good thoughts; the evil also learn to conquer the positive, selfless and right thoughts of their minds with wrong thoughts.

Also, by persisting in their wrong doing they have come to love, enjoy and grow passionate in doing evil. Secretly, they may admire the good people and wish to be like them, but their minds have become clouded by their selfish and evil thoughts. They have lost the battle of the mind and degenerated to the point where their minds are totally dominated by selfishness. In fact, they no longer see themselves or their thoughts and actions as selfish. Even when the whole society frowns at their actions, they do not see what society is seeing, because they have been blinded by their evil minds.

The mind is the bargaining ground for different and opposing thoughts. The mind is always busy. Even when the body is asleep, the mind is working. It is the working of the mind when the body is asleep that we call dreams. Some dreams are extensions of the thoughts that troubled the mind while the body was awake. As the body sleeps, the mind begins to unravel those thoughts and make decisions about them, because the mind is full of activities.

Some Diseases are By-products of the Battle of the Mind

Sometimes, the battle of the mind degenerates into medical conditions that affect the body adversely. For example, when the mind of a parent is stressed and overtasked by thoughts of the waywardness of a child, it can easily result in high blood pressure in the body of the parent. Some people have developed stroke and become paralyzed because of the different thoughts and worries that clouded their minds about business, family or finance. Others have lost their life-savings to fraudsters and suffered severe heart attacks while thinking about such losses.

These scenarios can be described as the mind exerting undue pressure, heat, tension and strain on the body. The body cracks and breaks down under such pressure. It is such crack and break down that is manifested in those different health conditions.

The body may break down, but the mind continues to think.

The physical actions we see exhibited by people are mere expressions, results of the intense battle that had raged in their minds between two different thoughts. It is after the mind has chosen a particular thought over the other that it transmits corresponding impulses, in the form of emotions, to the body for eventual manifestation.

A Provoked Mind is Dangerous

The human mind is probably the most mysterious and unfathomable thing after God. That is why we say the mind is deep. It is the mind of a selfish person that motivates him to take actions that hurt other people or make them angry.

When a person tells you that he or she is not happy or angry with you, never take such a word lightly. Do everything you can to make peace with the person. You do not know the depth to which the mind of the person is willing to go to seek redress. It is cheaper to drop your pride and engage in peace dialogue with a person you have hurt than to go about with the mentality that they cannot do anything to you. The mind is unsearchable.

In May 2020, another wave of Black Lives Matter protests hit the United States of America and the world at large. This followed the senseless killing of a black man, George Floyd, by a white police officer in the process of arresting Mr. Floyd.

Two police men already had the unarmed black man handcuffed and pinned to the ground, when one of the officers pressed his knee down on the neck of the black man, choking him. Mr. Floyd kept begging the police to lift him up, saying, I cant breathe. Yet the officer who had his knee on Mr. Floyds neck ignored his plea and continued to exert pressure on the knee until George Floyd died.

That police man was motivated to his actions because his mind probably told him nobody would do anything against him because of his uniform and status as a law enforcement officer. He was wrong. His action provoked the minds of so many people, leading to clashes between the people and police in which some police officers were killed, police stations were set on fire, and thousands of people took to the streets of major US cities and countries across the world in protest against the continued racial discrimination of blacks by white law enforcement officers.

Who are you suffocating by your selfish actions? The pains your actions are inflicting on them might provoke them to counter measures if you are not careful.

When you are hurting people and they dont retaliate, do not think that it is because they are afraid of you or that they are cowards. No! Rather, their calmness is because they have not been pushed to the point where they can no longer tolerate you or control themselves. When you persist in mounting pressure on them, eventually you will drive them to the point where they lose their mind and damn the consequences. At that point they will certainly retaliate. And often, that retaliation can be very disastrous for you.

Some people cannot tolerate. The moment you hurt them, they get back at you immediately. Some of such people can go as far as personally committing murder or hiring assassins to kill those who hurt them. Sometimes for things that may even appear trivial.

Whatever the case and whoever you are, when you do something to someone and they tell you that you have hurt them, let that statement serve as a warning to you. Quickly look for ways to make amends and pacify them. Put aside your pride and make peace with the person, because you dont know what their mind is capable of. Dont think that the other person can do nothing against you because of your power, money or position.

History is full of accounts of great generals, political leaders, kings and presidents who despite the sophisticated security apparatus and military might under their command were assassinated by ordinary, harmless-looking people who felt aggrieved by the actions of such great people and were driven to counter actions by their minds. Wives have killed husbands and husbands have killed wives. Children have risen against parents and parents against children. Friends have killed friends. It all depends on the minds of the people involved.

So, if you have been arrogantly oppressing others, hurting them and getting away with it, dont think that the other person lacks the ability to do anything against you. They are merely tolerating you because they have not taken it to mind or conceived the thought to kill or hurt you.

Dont push them to the wall!

Conclusion

Make it a habit to expose yourself to only the right words and words that will stimulate your mind positively. Discipline yourself to make sure that you take only the right images into your mind. Surround yourself with people, books, messages that will feed your mind with positive information.

You may have to tune off some TV stations, block some Internet sites, exit from some social media platforms, and dissociate from some friends in order to save your mind from exposure to negative and damaging information. Do it quickly!

Remember, every battle has a winner and a loser. It is usually the side with the best strategy and superior weapons that wins. If you are going to win the battle of the mind and become a person who adds to the progress and greatness of your society and nation, you will have to adopt strategies and build up a mental arsenal that will ensure that you constantly feed your mind with the right information, while blocking out wrong ones.

If you must win the battle of the mind, therefore, you must be committed to nurturing your mind with the right information from what you hear, see and your environment.

Right information nourishes your mind. A well-nourished mind produces right thoughts. Right thoughts will stimulate right choices. Right choices lead to right emotions. Right emotions will activate right actions. Right actions build up society.

Winners are those who make it a habit of always producing right actions and I know you have all it takes to be a winner!

The UKs Huawei Decision: Why the West is Losing the Tech Race – Chatham House

The UKs decision to ban its mobile providers from buying new Huawei 5G equipment after December 2020 and removing all the companys 5G kit from their networks by 2027 is a blow to Huawei and China, but it is one battle in a long war that the West is currently losing.

5Gs significance for the next generation of technology is indisputable and so is its critical role in helping countries achieve digital transformation and economic success. Not only does it offer faster and better connection speeds and greater capacity, it also transforms the way people interact with online services. And it will allow industry to automate and optimize processes that are not possible today.

Due to its transformative importance, what is in essence a technological issue has turned into a contest over global technological leadership that extends beyond the US-China rivalry and has created tensions between the US and its long-time allies. Yet 5G is just one key technology in a more expansive landscape that will underpin the future of the worlds critical infrastructure, including in areas such as quantum computing, biotechnology, artificial intelligence, the internet of things and big data.

To achieve technological leadership in these domains requires governments to invest in a long-term, strategic and agile vision that is able to encompass the interdependencies between these areas and then leverage the resulting technological advances for economic progress. It also requires governments working with each other and with the private sector to support research and development and to create companies with leading-edge technologies that can compete globally.

China understands this and has a national and international vision to establish itself as a technological superpower. Re-balancing from a hub oflabour-intensivemanufacturing to a global innovation powerhouse is the absolute priority of the ruling Chinese Communist Party.

In the earlier part of this journey, commercial espionage and IP theft of western R&D were at the heart of the Chinese way of competing. Now, Beijing is cultivating national champions that can drive Chinas technological innovation, with the goal of using domestic suppliers to reducereliance on foreign technology at home as well as extending its international outreach.

In the 5G area, Beijing has introduced domestically the so-called New Infrastructure Investments Fund, which earmarks special loans to boost 5G technology applications in medical devices, electric vehicles and communication platforms. This Fund constitutes a major part of the stimulus package for Chinas post-COVID economic recovery.

Apart from 5G, China's recent launch of a second state-fundedsemiconductor development fundvalued at $29 billion, following an earlier $20 billion fund for the same purpose, shows the extent to which state financial resources are being utilized in Chinas quest to become technologically self-sufficient.

It is too early to know if the Chinese governments industrial policies will eventually achieve the technological self-sufficiency Beijing has long desired. But its growing national capabilities have stoked serious concerns across the West and led to the current US administrations determined effort to dismantle Chinese high-tech companies.

Chinas approach to macroeconomic management diverges significantly from that of the US and other market economies, particularly in its policy towards driving innovation. Due to the legacy of a state-planned economy, China is certain that simply relying on market forces is insufficient.

While Beijing financially supports government-controlled technological enterprises, Washington takes a laissez-faire, light-touch approach by the state to the business sector. The US believes that a politicized process of distributing public money is inherently susceptible to rent-seeking and corruption, and gets in the way of competitive innovation. In line with most liberal economists, many Western governments believe the government should refrain from market intervention. For its part, Beijing stresses a state-dominated economy as a necessary precondition both to the future growth of the Chinese economy and to the legitimization of one-party rule.

If the pro-market economists view iscorrect, the USshould have little to fear from Chinese industrial innovation policy in the long-term. Let Beijing waste money and distort resource allocation, while Washingtonfollows its private sector-led principles, condent that this approach will produce a more competitive economy in the long run.

But one area that should concern the US and that illustrates the Chinese vision for global technological dominance is technical standard setting. Technical standards determine how technologies work with each other, enabling their interoperability around the world, meaning they can function irrespective of where they are being used.

The Chinese leadership has long understood the relationship between technical standards and economic power. Standards help to monetize technological innovation and research and can help shape new technologies. China has therefore been playing an increasingly active role in international standards organizations to legitimize Chinese technologies, whereas the US, which historically has been highly influential in this area, has not been participating as much or as effectively.

China has also been using its Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) as an opportunity to internationalize thedistribution of its standards tocountries signed up to the BRI.The so-called Digital Silk Road, which has been described as Chinas most important global governance initiative, acts as a route to accelerate this process.Later this year, China is expected to launch its new China Standards 2035 plan, which aims to shape how the next generation of technologies will work together.

Chinas preferred model and its recent actions have given Western leaders much to worry about. But standing up to Chinas growing global influence in high technology and re-establishing the Wests desired technological edge will take much more than achieving a common front on excluding China from their 5G networks. It requires a long-term vision built on the power of competitive markets, backed by solid investment in the next generation of technology. This will require, in turn, much greater cooperation between Western governments and between them and their private sectors.

And, whilst recent protective steps taken in Washington and other Western capitals may slow down Chinas trailblazing in the technology sphere, it will only hasten China's determination to become tech self-sufficient in the long term. This will increase the probability of a splintered internet, which will have negative repercussions for all.

The One Time Michael Jordan Wore Another Player’s Shoes in an NBA Game – Sportscasting

Michael Jordanis arguably the greatest basketball player in thehistory of the NBA. He also has a famous shoe brand that is worth a lot of money. Jordanwore his shoe brand, and now you see players and people walking around in his shoes.

There was one time during his playing career where he did not wear his shoe and ended up wearing another players shoe. Lets find out who that player was.

Before the shoes were created for the world, the Air Jordan sneakerswere made exclusively for Jordan. The shoes were designed for Nike by Peter Moore, Tinker Hatfield, and Bruce Kilgore. During his rookie season, Jordan had the chance to sport his new shoes that no one has seen before. The Air Jordan I was the first shoe of his collection. The shoe featured a red and black colorway, and the shoes ended up being outlawed by NBA Commissioner David Stern because the shoes did not have enough white in them. There was a rule in the NBA where shoes had to have a certain percentage of white featured. After the shoe was banned, Jordan and Nike released the Jordan I in colorways with more white featured in the shoe.

After that shoe was created, more and more of the Air Jordans came out. Nike expected to sell $3 million worth of Air Jordans after four years, and they sold $126 million after one year. That tells you how much people wanted to wear his shoes. The demand for Air Jordans was very high. During the late 1980s and mid-1990s, not only was Jordan, a top player in the league, but he also had the top shoe in the league. Movie actors, rappers, and other professional athletes who played different sports wanted a pair. Jordan changed the game with his shoe brand.

The Hall of Famers shoe has been released in hundreds of colorways in high, low, and mid-top versions. Air Jordans arent just popular basketball shoes, and the shoes are among the most popular shoes on the market. No other professional athlete will be able to top what Michael Jordan did with his shoes.

In 1995 during the Eastern Conference semifinals, the Chicago Bulls took on the Orlando Magic. In Game 3, Jordan did not wear his shoes. Instead, he wore Penny Hardaways Nike Air Flight One shoes. That was the first and only time Jordan wore another players shoes. So why did he wear them? When Hardaway first came into the league, Jordan admired his game. In an article from The Undefeated, Hardaway talked about how Jordan saw him as the next star in the NBA.

Hardaway was signed to Nikeas a rookie, and he wanted to see if the brand could make him a custom pair of the Air Jordan 9s. Jordan agreed to have it done, and that made Hardaway one of the first players outside of Jordan to wear player-exclusive Air Jordans. When the Bulls were playing the Magic in the 1995 playoffs, Jordan was fined $5,000 for wearing shoes that were too white. Jordan had to find another shoe to wear. Instead of wearing one of his other shoes, he decided to wear Hardaways Nike Air Flight Ones.

No other NBA player can say that Michael Jordan wore their shoe except for Hardaway. Jordan did not have to wear Hardaways shoes, but he did it out of respect, and they had a good relationship. In Game 3 of the 1995 Eastern Conference semifinals, Jordan went to work wearing Hardaways shoes. He scored a series-high 40 points, but the Magic won the game and went on to win the series and advance to the NBA Finals.

But Hardaway will never forget the time when Jordan wore his shoes. We all know that Michael Jordan is one of the fiercest competitors ever. Hes not gonna wear just anybodys shoe, he wouldnt do that for a lot of people, Hardaway said. For him to do that for me, it was the ultimate level of respect.

The One Time Michael Jordan Wore Another Player's Shoes in an NBA Game - Sportscasting

Michael Jordan changed the fashion game, one beret and gold hoop at a time – ESPN

Michael Jordan shuffled papers as he sat overlooking the basketball court on the Charlotte Bobcats sideline. It was March 2010, and the five-time NBA MVP was awaiting a final decision on league approval for him to be a majority owner of the Bobcats. As a camera panned down, you could see that his black leather-heeled boots landed well above the ankle. They paired with wide-leg jeans frayed at the bottom and a penny-brown corduroy blazer with epaulets and elbow patches.

An image of Jordan in his Chelsea-style boots, commonly referred to on social media as "brunch boots" because of their popularity among men who get decked out to ingest a carafe of mimosas with a side of waffles on the weekends, littered sports television shows, blogs and newspaper sections the next morning. At that moment, I knew this childhood idol, who once defined my understanding of cool -- a man who famously sourced cotton from Egypt for custom dress shirts -- would henceforward be sartorially categorized with middle-aged father figures, the neighbor who waters the lawn at 6 on a Saturday morning and every AP Calculus teacher ever.

With time, Jordan, now 57, leaned in further than Sheryl Sandberg to this retirement aesthetic. He fully embraced dad jeans, Canadian tuxedos, billowing golf shorts and boat-sized pant legs. I cringed with each meme poking fun at his wardrobe and every mention of his ongoing style dive.

"The Last Dance," a 10-part series that explores the Bulls' dynasty through the lens of the 1997-98 season and that will be available on Netflix starting Sunday after a run on ESPN and ABC, served as a reminder of his style icon status. This is a man who turned male-pattern baldness into a shiny aerodynamic masterpiece. The most popular sneaker of all time was branded in his likeness. Jordan made a pirate accessory a must-have item and wore a beret better than Claude Monet. His superstitions helped change the length of NBA regulation basketball shorts.

"His economy of movement was always extraordinary. He wasn't a player who was flinging himself around all over the place," Vanessa Friedman, fashion director at The New York Times, said of Jordan. "His dressing is the same. It has that sort of economy of choice, 'I'm going to have one earring that's going to look like this. I'm going shave my head, and it will look like this.'"

How could a man with the highest points-per-game average of all time in the regular season and in the playoffs, who was known to be obsessive about greatness -- extending to his wardrobe, branding and stats -- shed his cool? I didn't want this to be a part of his legacy. I had questions that Jordan's boots would never dare to answer, but maybe a revisit of his closet past could provide some insight.

The 1984 draft was the start of Jordan's public style narrative. The former University of North Carolina guard, who left for the draft a year before his scheduled graduation, entered the Felt Forum at Madison Square Garden in a pinstriped suit, cropped hair and a simple tie. The North Carolina native -- and the No. 3 pick that year (Akeem Olajuwon, who became Hakeem Olajuwon in 1991, was No. 1) -- presented as the kid next door, the college student out on his first job interview as he held up his No. 23 Bulls jersey. It was like dangling dollar bills in front of eager marketers. Jordan signed with Nike in his rookie year.

Jordan debuted the prototype Nike Air Jordan sneaker during a preseason game in '84. The shoe was a black-and-red colorway of the Nike Air Ship silhouette, which he wore while awaiting his signature sneaker. That shoe drew a warning from the league. The same colorway of the actual Air Jordan was banned for the regular season. The NBA mandated that players wear shoes that not only matched their uniforms but matched the shoes worn by their teammates. That policy led to the "51 percent rule" -- shoes had to be majority white and in accordance with what the rest of the team was wearing. Jordan continued to violate the rule. It was widely rumored that MJ had been hit with a $5,000 fine for violating the rule. ESPN previously reported that there was no evidence that Nike ever paid a fine.

Jordan went on to wear his banned shoe in the 1985 All-Star dunk contest, where he topped off the look with two gold chains that flew through the air as he released the ball through the hoop. The cachet of being banned spoke to the swagger and bravado of hip-hop fashion. It gave Jordan a little edge and helped evolve his backstory and brand. The ban went on to become a promotion for Nike. The television spot's voice-over noted, "On Sept. 15, Nike created a revolutionary new basketball shoe. On Oct. 18, the NBA threw them out of the league."

"At the time, the NBA tried their best to keep hair and what the players wore from head to toe as uniform as possible," said Jeff Staple, founder/CEO of RAD and designer of the famed Nike SB Dunk "NYC Pigeon" sneaker. "But that rebellious influence of hip-hop is there."

And the chain might have also been a subtle jab at his opponents, Staple suggested. "Jordan walks onto a court, and you -- as a competitor -- see him with two gold chains that he doesn't care if it gets ripped off. He's so good that he knows it won't happen."

As reported on The Undefeated in 2018, Jordan wore his UNC practice shorts under his Bulls uniform for every game in his early days. To accommodate the extra "layer of luck," Jordan asked for longer game shorts, which were a few inches above the knee in the early-to-mid-'80s, so the blue and white didn't peek out from under the red, black and white. MJ's longer and loose-fitting shorts caught on. The NBA gave the regulation shorts a little more legroom from then on. And when Mars Blackmon (Spike Lee) asked Jordan in another Nike ad whether it was "the shoes" and "the extra-long shorts" that made him great, the baggy basketball shorts moved beyond the court to a men's streetwear staple.

"Michael in those tiny shorts, his swag doesn't even fit in those," said Jermaine Hall, director of Medium Editorial Group, who previously held executive editorial posts at Vibe, XXL and BET. "Mike gets a bad rap now based on how he dresses. But Michael in his prime was a fashion-forward dude, both on and off the court."

Jordan racked up endorsement deals with Hanes, Gatorade and Upper Deck, among others. His image became a multimillion-dollar business. (He's now a billionaire.) His attire reflected the shift from star player to one of the most marketed images on the planet. In the early '90s, Jordan transitioned out of the walk-up warm-up T-shirts and pants. Suiting became his off-court armor.

According to GQ magazine, Chicago tailor Alfonso Burdi created a suit prototype for Jordan that included "baggy pants, jackets extra long and extra full." Burdi had planned to adjust the suit to a traditional slimmer cut upon fittings. Jordan preferred the loose look. The NBA All-Star ordered more than a dozen of the style. This became his power suit. While the '80s favored volume, like exaggerated shoulder pads, the '90s ushered in minimalist suiting with breathable fabrics that moved in unison with the body. It's as if Jordan combined both eras to project his desired image. It would be baggy like the shorts he wore on the court, with shoulder pads to provide his slender frame an illusion of width.

"When Jordan started wearing loose-fitting suits, they were immaculate. Every crease was crisp and wrinkles escaped," Friedman said. "He was always impeccable and calculated. In the same way that he was utterly calm when he was playing, completely in control and dominant, his clothing said the same thing.

"If his suits were oversized, they were oversized for a reason. The line of his jackets was perfect. [His look] was incredibly consistent, and it all had integrity."

Giorgio Armani's menswear collections of the late '80s and early '90s are widely credited for creating a new interpretation of the suit. Armani thought the standard suit of that time stifled the body. He wanted to create movement and comfort, which made sense for a pro athlete. This influenced menswear designers around the globe. Many pro athletes employed tailors and garment makers to personalize the look for their frames. But why weren't Jordan and other top athletes of the era front row at the international fashion week presentations and donning garments as soon as they graced the runway, just as Russell Westbrook and Dwyane Wade have done in recent years?

"The disconnect was there were not people like me or Rachel Johnson [LeBron James' stylist who also has worked with other notable athletes such as former NFL player and current ESPN analyst Victor Cruz] there to educate the fashion houses," said Calyann Barnett, a wardrobe stylist and creative director whose client list includes Wade, Usain Bolt, Zion Williamson and Donovan Mitchell. "We had to explain to these houses, which most of them are based in Europe ... we had to translate how the clothes they design for stick-thin models would work on men who are over 6-foot-6 and muscular.

The groundbreaking sports analysis program returns with a historic edition airing in conjunction with "The Last Dance" on ESPN. The five-episode series explores the 1998 Chicago Bulls and features episodes hosted by Phil Jackson, Dennis Rodman and Steve Kerr. Watch on ESPN+

"There wasn't a line of communication during [Jordan's era]. When stylists really came into play [in the early 2000s], we explained, 'These are the people who will look great in your clothes and sell them.'" (Jordan did employ the services of designers, tailors and branding managers but did not have a full-time stylist. He worked with stylists on photo shoots.)

Regardless of whose name was on the garment -- be it his trusted tailor or a Milan-based designer, Jordan became a master of power suiting. So much so that he had Nike designer Tinker Hatfield, who designed many of his Air Jordan sneakers, make the Air Jordan "Concord" XI, which was released in 1995, more formal. The sneaker featured a patent trim, which mimicked a pair of spats. Wearing the sneakers with a suit would work just as well as wearing them with his uniform.

To afford my first pair of Air Jordans in the late 1990s, I'd pocket about $3.75 of the $5 my mother handed me for lunch money each day. For two months, I ate 50-cent Linden's Butter Crunch Cookies and 75-cent soggy fries, the cheapest combo of eats in my high school cafeteria that would stave off hunger until I returned home for dinner. The Concords were about $120 in my size after taxes, and I knew my mother would never want to spend that much on gym shoes. As I opened the black-and-silver box, I recalled His Airness soaring above the court at the United Center with these patent-leather-trim wonders on his feet as he clinched his fourth ring in Game 6 of the 1996 NBA Finals. The sneaker brought a piece of Jordan's talent, style and showmanship to my then-15-year-old self. Decades have passed and trends have changed, but the sneakers, the stats and his overall image still represent that greatness.

Jordan's style innovation extended beyond suiting and sneakers. His bald head, which he shaved clean in 1989 after managing a receding hairline, was a thing of beauty. Others, like Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, had done it. But no one owned the branding of bald head quite like MJ.

"Previous to Jordan, we saw players like Dominique Wilkins and Karl Malone rock fades," Staple said. "Jordan's baldy felt streamlined and efficient."

"When Chris Webber did it in Michigan, that was a style choice," Hall said. "For Michael, it was done out of necessity. And it gave him a branded look that was very safe and approachable to everyone."

There was also the gold hoop earring that dangled from Jordan's left earlobe. The jewel made its debut in the mid-'90s and lives on today. He had dropped the two chains in favor of an understated interpretation of bling. While athletes and celebrities were weighing themselves down with gold chains and diamond-encrusted watches, a stereotypical purchasing habit of the newly monied, Jordan opted for a delicate hoop. Again, it was clean and steered clear of the stereotype, making it easily digestible to mass audiences who might have seen anything more as gauche.

At the 1996 Hollywood premiere of "Space Jam," Jordan wore a gray suit, the jacket grazing his knees as he walked. A collarless buttoned shirt lay flat underneath, and his pant leg spilled over onto his black shoes. Jordan's head shined, and the hoop earring twinkled. This was a man who looked as if he could carry your team to glory and play one-on-one with Bugs Bunny. And surely, that was done with intention. None of it was left to chance.

Jordan won at everything -- basketball, branding and style. He was the standard because he fought to be so. And that fight can be a young man's game. The heeled boots, the endless pockets on his cargo shorts and his Easter-ready golf ensembles triggered a yearning for the Jordan of yesteryear. Jordan comfortably moved on from being the standard of cool, and we weren't prepared to accept that. Our childhood heroes have the right to evolve. We have to accept that they aren't just symbols of our youthful ideals but fully formed humans.

Jordan is the GOAT of GOATs, but his success is no longer directly associated with his physical appearance. He has grown beyond that. The Jordan brand will be forever revered regardless of what the man himself wears on the sideline or anywhere else. He's aware that he's a meme and has publicly gotten in on the joke. He knows that you've crudely critiqued his dadcore wardrobe. But will you still buy his shoes? Stream the docuseries about his greatness? Of course you will. And he knows that too.

"MJ is comfortable in his skin and with the style that he's in," Hall said. "It would take a quick phone call to revamp himself to what would look cool in 2020. I don't think he cares. I think he's fine."

Jordan flirted in the 1990s with the wide-leg pants and washed-out jeans that he's partial to now. The trends changed; his taste didn't. Like many of us, he likes what he likes and sticks with it. He's entitled to peer over his iPad, as he did in the docuseries, to poke fun at Scott Burrell while wearing khaki shorts. There's a Zen-like beauty to this level of self-acceptance.

"This is a part of his messaging: 'I'm not going to change who I am because the times have changed, and you're just going to accept it,'" Barnett said. "It's a boss mood."

"The Last Dance" serves as a reminder that Jordan expected nothing less than greatness from himself and his teammates. It solidified him as this godlike figure for a new generation of fans. The series also provided us the space to embrace the Jordan of then and now at the same time. It humanized him. It made our idol feel real. And he has earned the right to be here, dad jeans and all.

Disruptions of literacy learning in Jordan and Democratic Republic of the Congo due to COVID-19 – Democratic Republic of the Congo – ReliefWeb

In a world where around 773 million young people and adults are still lacking basic literacy skills (UIS), the COVID-19 pandemic and the consequences of its lockdown are only magnifying the already existing literacy challenges.

In line with this years theme of the upcoming International Literacy Day and UNESCO International Literacy Prizes, Literacy teaching and learning during the COVID-19 crisis and beyond, we are looking into how former Prizes laureates have been coping with the unforeseen crisis.

This is the first story in the series of two where we follow testimonies from Indonesia, Colombia, Jordan and DRC on how the laureates ensure that their literacy programmes continue to reaching the most vulnerable populations during the pandemic.

Reading rhymes with mental health benefits and resilience in Jordan

The We Love Reading (WLR) programme from Jordan received the UNESCO King Sejong Literacy Prize in 2017, and since then, it has gone on reaching children in 55 countries around the world.

WLR is a grassroots community Programme which prides itself to fostering the love of reading among children and youth; empowering youth and adults to become change makers through reading aloud in their communities; and creating resilience among children, youth and adults through reading.

And rightfully so, the WLR programme has proven to reduce stress and anxiety in the past and boosting mental health and resilience among vulnerable populations such as refugees or people with low socioeconomic status.

The programme aims to tackle the fact that the majority of children around the world dont read for fun. It builds on the logic that without reading for pleasure, children wont reap the real benefits of reading, such as widening their imagination, increasing their vocabulary, heightening their empathy, confidence and resilience.

Since the beginning of COVID-19, the programme launched a specific We Love Reading plan for Corona.

The plan for Corona is about local volunteers reading aloud to children in their neighborhoods or at home in the context of COVID-19. Reading aloud is a way to motivate them to love reading and in this way become lifelong learners, explains Ms Rana Dajani, the Founder of We Love Reading.

All these benefits become especially important when education is compromised. Reading for pleasure becomes a placeholder until learning goes back to normal. Maybe it is the only way of learning during this crisis, says Ms Dajani.

Other initiatives of the programme during the COVID-19 crisis have included posting free audio and textbooks online in English and Arabic; recordings of WLR ambassadors reading stories aloud, and WLR ambassadors posting inspiring social media messages from around the world to testify how they are coping and dealing with the crisis.

Poverty, homelessness and sexual violence against women are the harsh costs of the pandemic in the Democratic Republic of the Congo

The Collectif Alpha Ujuvi (CAU) in the Democratic Republic of the Congo was awarded the UNESCO Confucius Prize for Literacy in 2011 for its programme Literacy for the peaceful coexistence of communities and good governance.

The programmes objective was to train trainers in literacy techniques, inform communities about illiteracy, elaborate coordination among literacy centers, and supervise and evaluate their work.

The province in North Kivu has suffered long-term political instability and massive displacement of populations. This led to permanent insecurity and a lack of peace for the population. Under the direction of Ms Sister Deodata Bunzigiye, the programme used literacy to prevent and resolve tensions and conflicts among individuals and communities in the region. Peace huts combined with literacy learning brought more security to the politically unstable communities.

Since receiving the Prize in 2011, the CAU invested the Prize money in a large field which they named AZINA Confucius or Confucius treasure. It provided and still provides room for the schooling of several poor and vulnerable children in the region, who have either dropped out of school before or never attended any learning.

However, the COVID-19 crisis and its consequences have put the children and the programme in a vulnerable position.

Our students who have already been reintegrated, risk dropping out of school again, says Ms Sister Deodata Bunzigiye, Executive Secretary of the Alpha Ujuvi Collective.

One of the major challenges is that of confinement. It is followed by the problem of immense poverty in a post-conflict situation. The vast majority of households with no stable economy live from day to day. We see that domestic violence is becoming more frequent, and the closure of schools increases the rate of homelessness and sexual exploitation of young girls. We are observing a huge challenge with an increased number of children, particularly underage girls, living on the streets of the city of Goma, says Ms Bunzigiye.

To cope with and adapt to the challenges of the COVID-19 crisis, the CAU has taken numerous measures to protect the children during the pandemic and continue literacy learning in other forms.

With the support of one of our partners, our corrective schools use books that make homework at home possible. The challenge remains for those who are in the streets, she says.

As part of the fight against the spreading of the Corona virus, the CAU supervises 30 underage girls living in the streets of the city of Goma. The young girls are accompanied on medical and psychosocial levels, with the goal to later being inserted later in the CUAs Furahini school recovery center.

For the literacy groups, we follow the preventive and protective measures encouraged by the Congolese government, such as regular hand washing, use of disinfectants, mufflers etc., and we divide the classes in half to at most 15 learners, says Ms Bunzigiye.

The CAU also manages to keep in touch with its learners, especially those who prepare their public defenses within the framework of the "Mupaka Shamba letu" project in partnership with Alert International.

The Provincial Government in partnership with the CAU, has studied how to further harness the benefits of the "Azina - Confucius" field on an educational, social and development level. A multidisciplinary center with a literacy circle and trade center for young people is planned, but the project is currently in the start-up phase.

We now have to think about including preventive and protective strategies to limit the spreading of the virus, says Ms Bunzigiye.

This years International Literacy Day and UNESCO International Literacy Prizes will be looking into the theme of literacy teaching and learning in the COVID-19 crisis and beyond. The five new Prizes laureates will be announced around International Literacy Day, 8 September 2020.

The two UNESCO International Literacy Prizes are: The UNESCO King Sejong Literacy Prize, Established in 1989, with the support of the Government of the Republic of Korea, which gives special consideration to the development and use of mother-tongue literacy education and training. And the UNESCO Confucius Prize for Literacy, established in 2005 with the support of the Government of the Peoples Republic of China, which is dedicated to promoting literacy amongst adults in rural areas and out-of-school youth, particularly girls and women.

How an executive producer on ‘The Last Dance’ got Michael Jordan involved in the hit docuseries – Insider – INSIDER

Long before the ESPN docuseries "The Last Dance" became a must-watch, producer Michael Tollin was one of the main figures behind the scenes just trying to get the project off the ground.

Without Tollin, the series which was an in-depth look at the Chicago Bulls dynasty of the late 1990s that included Michael Jordan talking about his career like never before may never have been made.

The veteran producer behind sports movies like "Coach Carter" and "Varsity Blues" had heard for years about the locked away footage. The NBA had filmed the Bulls' title run in 1998, which would mark the end of the team's dominance over the NBA (led by Jordan) that resulted in two three-peat championships (1991-1993, 1996-1998).

Through most of the early 2000s, everyone from Spike Lee to "Indiana Jones" producer Frank Marshall tried to gain the rights but Jordan, who had to agree to the footage being released, always declined.

In 2012, Tollin formed with Mandalay Entertainment head Peter Guber Mandalay Sports Media, a production company focused on sports entertainment. One of the projects Tollin set his sights on was the Bulls 1998 footage.

"The Last Dance" chronicles the Chicago Bulls dynasty, led by Michael Jordan (center). Andrew D. Bernstein

Fast forward four years at the NBA All-Star Game in Toronto. Tollin finally made some progress when he met with Curtis Polk and Estee Portnoy, the leaders of Jordan's business empire. For months, the three worked on how to present the idea of "The Last Dance" to Jordan.

"I have to give them credit for chaperoning me," Tollin told Insider, "because I didn't know if I would ever get behind the curtain and personally sit with Jordan."

A lookbook which gives a general outline of the intended project through photos, synopsis, and other written material was put together by Tollin and his team. And then in June 2016, Tollin said he suddenly got the call: Come meet Jordan.

Tollin got ready for a red-eye flight to Charlotte to see Air Jordan, though he admits he didn't even have a set meeting.

"I remember my wife said, 'What time is the meeting?' And I said, 'We don't have one,' she said, 'Wait, you're flying to Charlotte without a meeting?' And I said, 'It's Michael Jordan, absolutely,'" Tollin recalled.

Tollin said after he landed, he still had no idea if he would actually get to meet Jordan until he entered his office. With Polk and Portnoy by his side, Jordan appeared, sat down, and after some small talk, he opened the lookbook.

The first page Jordan saw, according to Tollin, was a brief note the producer wrote to Jordan: "Dear Michael, every day kids come to my office wearing your shoes who have never seen you play. It's time."

"He put on his reading glasses to read it, so that was definitely a moment," Tollin said. "He smiled and he continued reading."

Tollin said that Jordan read every word on every page. Watching the NBA legend read through the notes, Tollin said he observed what would be highlighted in the 10-part docuseries: How Jordan has a gift of being fully in the moment.

"There's a mental game that nobody can touch him on, and I felt it just sitting in the room. I felt he was completely with me," Tollin said.

Michael Tollin. Gilbert Carrasquillo/Getty

When Jordan got to the last page that listed the credits of the people who would be involved in the project, it included an image of Allen Iverson from the documentary Tollin produced called "Iverson."

"So, you did this?" Tollin said Jordan asked him as he pointed at the Iverson photo.

"I'm a Philly guy, and I remember Michael being crossed up by Allen. So here's a guy who holds grudges to motivate himself, I did not know if there was an Iverson grudge," Tollin said. "So I acted like I didn't hear him."

Jordan asked again as Tollin looked at him: "You did that?"

Tollin told Jordan he did, sheepishly. Jordan responded: "I watched it three times, it made me cry. Loved that little guy."

Tollin said Jordan then got up and walked from behind his desk and shook his hand.

"I'm in," Jordan told him.

Looking back now, Tollin has no clue if his meeting was the deciding factor in Jordan getting on board or if the NBA legend had made his decision before Tollin touched down in Charlotte.

"He was ready to tell his story his way," Tollin said.

Though he admits, the Jordan meeting is one heck of a story.

"The Last Dance" is available on Netflix beginning Sunday.

Recreational releases from Jordan Dam keep whitewater enthusiasts on their game – Alabama NewsCenter

Matthew Thornton has been paddling since he was 6 years old. He did his first solo kayak float at age 8.

More than 30 years later, hes still on the water, although these days youre more likely to find him doing some whitewater SUPing that is, running rapids on a stand-up paddleboard.

And his go-to place for it all? The Coosa River.

I was pretty much born in it, the Titus native said of the river just a short hop from his native stomping grounds. It just feels like home.

Its also convenient that where Thornton lives near Lake Jordan and Jordan Dam is one of the best places in the region to catch some serious whitewater.

For years, Thornton has helped spread his love for paddling and whitewater as a member, and now president, of the Coosa River Paddling Club. The club hosts the annual Coosa River Whitewater Festival, which takes place on the Coosa between Wetumpka and Jordan Dam. On weekends during warm-weather months, Alabama Power releases water from the dam for recreational purposes, creating the conditions that fuel paddlers of all stripes and abilities, as well as the annual festival.

Its a month later than usual and scaled back a bit, but the Coosa River Whitewater Festival lives on in 2020. (Coosa River Whitewater Festival)

Typically, the Coosa River Whitewater Festival runs for three days in June. This year, however, the COVID-19 pandemic forced a pause.

After careful consideration and consultation with its members, the paddling club is moving forward with a more low-key, two-day competition this weekend.

This is one of the oldest paddling competitions in the South. And it may be one of the few that take place this year, Thornton said.

The event July 18-19 will include extra precautions so people adhere to social-distancing guidelines.

Giant crowds that would be an issue this year because of the pandemic have never been a problem at previous festivals, since attendees must paddle out to where the competition takes place. The shorter notice about this years festival is likely to reduce the number of paddlers and keep it more of a local event.

Were going to be doing everything we can, to the best of our ability to maintain safe distancing, said Thornton, who is thrilled the club will be able to keep the long-running event alive in 2020. The first festival took place in 1985.

Proceeds from the festival typically go to local conservation efforts, including park improvements and nonprofits working to protect the environment and enhance outdoor recreation.

Alabama Power has been very supportive and cooperative. Theyve really helped to keep it going over these many years, Thornton said.

In addition to the summertime recreational flows on weekends, throughout the year Alabama Power maintains a minimum flow of water through Jordan Dam to support the health of the Coosa and wildlife that rely on the river.

One of the most important beneficiaries of the minimum flow has been the rare tulotoma snail, which was placed on the federal endangered species list in 1991. The damming of the Coosa, beginning nearly a century ago, helped electrify the region and improve the economy and quality of life in local communities. But it also was among the factors that contributed to the decline of the snails population. Over the past 20 years, however, efforts by Alabama Power and multiple government and community partners have resulted in a comeback for the snail. In 2011, it became the first North American mollusk species to be moved or downlisted from the endangered species list to the less-serious threatened list. Efforts continue to help the snail further recover.

The weekend recreational flows typically begin in mid-June and continue through the end of October, depending on the availability of water. Recreational flows also are provided on the Memorial Day, July 4 and Labor Day holidays. Alabama Power varies the recreational flows in a three-weekend rotation. The three levels of flow provide a gentler experience for novice paddlers on some weekends, while higher flows on other weekends draw more-seasoned whitewater enthusiasts. Information about scheduled releases is posted three days ahead on the Lake Jordan page on Alabama Powers reservoir information website, http://www.apcshorelines.com, and on Alabama Powers Smart Lakes app.

Whitewater SUPing, in which the paddler stands on a paddleboard, is a popular way to ride the rapids. (Matthew Thornton)

Chris Carter, owner of local outfitter Coosa River Adventures, is another great source of information about this stretch of the Coosa River and the best ways to enjoy it. He started his boat rental business 25 years ago with six canoes and a trailer. Today, he has 200 single-person and 50 two-person kayaks, and the demand is there to grow more.

Its not only paddlers who are hitting the local waters in kayaks, he said. Anglers are increasingly inclined to drop a line from a kayak and avoid the big bass boats that ply surrounding lakes. He said the section of the Coosa below Jordan Dam offers some of the best spotted bass fishing around, an assertion affirmed by others who a few years ago proclaimed the Coosa as the only river (vs. a lake setting) worthy as a national top 10 fishing locale.

Carter said heavy rains this spring, more than COVID-19, dampened business for a time. But this summer, with outdoor recreation one of the best ways to exercise and stay safely apart, business is not suffering. We are pretty much maxed out on the weekends, he said.

Carter said the scheduled flows from Jordan Dam provide an advantage for those who want more predictable conditions for paddling and river pastimes. And with the Coosa being a warm-water river, that, too, can be more appealing for some people and families, compared to tackling cold-water rapids.

Im a lover of the river, Carter said. I love the fact that I get to look out my backyard and see the last fall line on the Coosa River.

For more information about this years Coosa River Whitewater Festival, Thornton recommends sending a message from the festivals Facebook page. Festival organizers will respond.

The case for Wayne Gretzky

The Great One racked up 2,857 points in his 20-year career and would own the NHLs all-time scoring record even if you took away his career goals (894) and counted only his assists (1,963). A nine-time MVP, Gretzky was so brilliant he cast a shadow on three men who would otherwise have great NHL GOAT cases: Gordie Howe, Bobby Orr and Mario Lemieux.

Kevin Kaduk

The case for Michael Phelps

Michael Phelps has deep breath won 28 Olympic medals, 10 more than anyone else; collected 23 golds, 14 more than anyone else; has the single most dominant Olympics in history, winning eight golds in 2008; has set 39 world records; set a world record at 15, won gold medals in his 30s. Oh, and he has won 20 more Olympic medals than Usain Bolt.

Pat Forde

The case for Michael Jordan

Michael Jordan was so good his claim to the NBAs GOAT throne is still gaining momentum almost a quarter-century after his retirement from theChicago Bulls. The Last Dance documentary reminded us how thoroughly he eviscerated the league. Jordan went 6-for-6 when a title was on the line, winning Finals MVP each time. He added five regular-season MVPs, three more scoring titles than anyone else in history and a Defensive Player of the Year award. No amount of honors or statistics can properly calculate how much fear Jordans blend of skill, athleticism and confidence struck into opponents hearts when the game mattered most.

Ben Rohrbach

The case for Tiger Woods

If were talking dominance and we are then Tiger Woods stretch from 1999-2002 is without comparison. He won five of six majors, including four in a row, and seven of 11. His 82 PGA Tour wins put him in a tie for first.

Miami Hurricanes tight end Brevin Jordan named to the Mackey Award watch list – State Of The U

The Friends of John Mackey released the preseason watch list for the John Mackey Award today. As one would expect, Brevin Jordans name was included on the list, along with 35 other collegiate tight ends.

Despite missing the last few games of last season with a foot injury, Jordan finished second on the team in receiving yards (395) and third in catches (35). He was named a finalist for the 2019 Mackey Award, along with Harrison Bryant from FAU and Hunter Bryant from Washington. Although you have to wonder if a healthy Jordan would have been able to claim the award (and help Miami avoid its string of awful losses to end the year), Harrison Bryant had a great year (65 catches, 1004 yards, 7 touchdowns) and was certainly a worthy selection.

Now, both Bryants are gone to the NFL, leaving Jordan as the only remaining finalist from last year. There are a number of rising tight ends who could put up competitive numbers, like Kyle Pitts from Florida and Pat Freiermuth from Penn State, but theres no doubt Jordan has the attention and respect from the awards decision makers.

Sure, individual awards are eh to some folks, but if theres one position where Miami has proven it should undoubtedly be given (positional group) U, it would be at tight end. Continuing to succeed there in both productivity, accolades, and future NFL success is only going to help restock the position with talented players. You also have to love it for the players when they are duly recognized for their hard work on and off the field, which the Mackey Award specifically claims to do. Its own standards state:

The John Mackey Award is given to the collegiate tight end who best exemplifies the play, sportsmanship, academics, and community values of NFL Hall of Fame tight end John Mackey.

Congrats to Brevin on being a finalist last year and being included on the watch list for this year. Hopefully a 2020 season happens, and its a highly productive one for Jordan with a dynamic quarterback and innovative offensive coordinator.

Seen it in the Past with Michael Jordan: Ex-NBA Player Reveals What Giannis Antetokounmpo Must Do to be Counted Among All Time Greats – Essentially…

Former NBA player Caron Butler joined Sekou Smith in the NBA Hangtime podcast to talk about Milwaukee Bucks and their superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo.

Butler felt there will be a lot of attention on the Bucks and Antetokounmpo once the season restarts. One of the reasons, he believed, was the approaching free agency of the 25-year old.

All the focus is really gonna be on the Bucks and Giannis because you think about the free agency possibilities. If he dont win, is he going to be a disgruntled superstar? I think he loves Milwaukee and I dont think that is going to be the case, he said.

By disgruntled superstar Butler meant not winning the championship before making moving to another team. Giannis is undoubtedly one of the best players in the league currently. For the past few years, he has been leading the Bucks to the playoffs. He won the league MVP last season and is one of the favorites to win the award again this season. Although he has evolved into a great player, Butler believed he needs to win championships to be considered among the all-time greatest players.

I do think that the conversations that weve had from all the former greats. It is like, okay if you dont win a championship, you will be criticized, Butler said.

Weve seen it in the past with Michael Jordan. Weve seen it in the past with the late, great Kobe Bryant, weve seen it with LeBron James and the list goes on. I think now he is starting to become subject to that because, lets face it, he is an elite talent. He is a unicorn in the game when we talk about his ability on the court.

But in order to be compared to the LeBrons, the Kawhi Leonards and Kevin Durants, he is going to have to win championships.

Giannis was closest to winning the title last season where the Bucks lost to Toronto Raptors in the Eastern Conference finals. They still boast of a great roster and had the best record in the NBA prior to the leagues suspension. They will be disappointed with anything less than a championship this season.

Long Island basketball prospect’s big chance wiped away by coronavirus – New York Post

This was supposed to be a huge summer for Jordan Riley. The chance to prove he was underrated, that he was among the nations premier players.

Instead, the Long Island native has had to settle for Zoom sessions, phone calls and backyard training due to the novel coronavirus pandemic shutting down the AAU circuit.

Jordan has decided to stay in public school. Had he done what everybody else does, re-class and go to a private school, he would be a top 10 in the country and a five-star athlete, his father Monty said. I know hes a five star, I know hes top 10 in the country.

Riley, a talented and high-flying 6-foot-4 shooting guard at Brentwood High School rated as a four-star recruit by ESPN, was going to travel with the New York Lightning and play in the premier Nike Elite Youth Basketball League this summer for the first time. It would have offered him opportunities to showcase his talents in front of the top Division I coaches in the country after he averaged 23 points, 12 rebounds and 4 assists per game for the Suffolk Class AA champions and was named Newsdays Suffolk Player of the Year. But the virus wiped that away. The rising senior hasnt allowed the virus to stop him from working, though. Fortunately, his Bay Shore home has a makeshift basketball court in the backyard, and Riley has taken advantage, putting in up to six hours per day, he said.

Its given me time to work on stuff, learn new things, he said. Work on my left hand, get my shot right, ballhandling, getting stronger, quicker. Its how to help my body.

He has also become a mentor to several younger people in the area, training with them when hes not working on his own game.

Im just working them out, trying to get them better, show them things I usually do in games and moves that I do, he said. I like to see them getting better, them having a smile on their face.

Another downside of the virus for Riley is the inability to visit schools. Its led to his phone, and that of his fathers, being inundated with calls from coaches. At the beginning it was fun, but it has grown tiresome. Thats one reason Riley is planning to make his college decision soon. He wouldnt set a timetable, but it could happen this summer, before school starts in September.

Riley said being able to win, develop as a player and person will play pivotal roles in where he chooses. He has a final five of St. Johns, UConn, Kansas, Florida State and Georgetown and will be making his decision by the end of the week, his father said. The decision will come down to which school is 100 percent beneficial to Jordan, his dad said, and which place will put him in a prime position to make an impact immediately.

One head coach believes he was trending towards being a top-100 recruit before the pandemic and thinks he couldve exploded had there been an AAU travel season.

I think hes a heck of a player. He has a fierce toughness on the court, which I love, the coach said. Obviously hes skilled. He reminds of an old school Big East player. Just a tough, hard-nosed kid. I love everything about him.

10 Medical Schools Where Students Leave With the Most Debt – Yahoo! Voices

The U.S. News Short List, separate from our overall rankings, is a regular series that magnifies individual data points in hopes of providing students and parents a way to find which undergraduate or graduate programs excel or have room to grow in specific areas. Be sure to explore The Short List: College, The Short List: Grad School and The Short List: Online Programs to find data that matters to you in your college or grad school search.

For some aspiring doctors, the cost of medical school may be intimidating, especially if they are wary of taking out student loans. Unfortunately, it's very difficult to finance a medical education without going into debt.

Six-figure debt burdens are common among medical school graduates. According to the Association of American Medical Colleges, 70% of medical degree recipients in 2019 had used student loans to pay for medical school. The median amount of medical education debt for those graduates was $200,000.

[Read: How to Attend Medical School for Free.]

Among the 117 ranked medical schools that provided U.S. News with medical education debt data, which excludes undergraduate and other types of debt, the average among 2019 graduates who borrowed for school was $179,186.

But graduates of some schools had debt burdens well above the norm. At each of the 10 medical schools where students left with the most medical education debt, the average indebtedness exceeded $230,000.

The College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific at Western University of Health Sciences in California tops the list, reporting an average indebtedness of $295,999 among its 2019 grads who borrowed student loans.

[Read: What Medical Schools Are Doing to Reduce Student Debt.]

Seven of these 10 schools are located in the Eastern U.S. Two are based in the Midwest, and one sits on the West Coast. Half of the schools are public, while the other half are private.

None of these schools placed among the top 40 in either the U.S. News ranking of research-focused medical schools or the ranking of primary care programs.

Story continues

Six of the schools on this list charged out-of-state students a higher tuition price for the 2019-2020 school year compared with in-state students. Tuition costs varied widely, ranging from a low of $21,472 for in-state students at West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine to a high of $93,537 for out-of-state students at the University of Illinois College of Medicine.

Med school hopefuls who are concerned about paying for school and taking on student debt should be aware that medicine is a lucrative career path. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, median compensation among U.S. physicians and surgeons is "equal to or greater than $208,000 per year."

Attaining that earning power is time-consuming, though. Medical school typically lasts for four years, and the next step is usually a residency within a particular medical specialty, such as pediatrics. Doctors who have completed a residency sometimes opt to pursue a fellowship to gain additional expertise. Medical training is extremely rigorous, and the job of a doctor is a demanding one, so med school officials say it's important for premeds to think hard about whether medicine is the right profession for them.

Below is a list of the 10 medical schools where 2019 graduates with medical education debt had the highest average indebtedness. Unranked schools, which did not meet certain criteria required by U.S. News to be numerically ranked, were not considered for this report.

Open Letter To Medical Students On The Road Ahead To Becoming Professional Physicians – Forbes

New York Medical College White Coat Ceremony

Dear Future Physicians,

I write to you today about what it is to have more than just a voice.I write to you about having something to say that you communicate with the whole and essence of your being. Yet, in truth, to have a voice, one must bring ones whole being along with it.

There will be times when that voice will be soft, still, barely heard over the confusion and distractions that seem to surround us.Other times that voice will be a clarion call, so loud that everyone around you will hear your message. But in both cases, the message will be the same.It will tell you and those for whom you care that you are present, that you are able, and that you are willing to bring yourselfyour whole selfto the task at hand, to the people for whom you are responsible.

A profession is so much more than an occupation. You do not simply take up space or occupy your time during the day.You certainly do not just submit to the whims and directions of your employers.A professional is fiercely independent when it comes to making himself or herself accountable for what is required, yet, at the same time, a professional is part of a larger community of like-minded individuals who, together, uphold values and goals that they share.

As you embark on your journey to becoming a professional, you must first take note that you are not already there.Wanting to be a physician is not the same as being one. There is much to learnand not only the medical knowledge and clinical skills that you will utilize in your care of patients.Like any other transformation, you must undergo a process of self-reflection.You must continually ask yourselves whether the expectations of the profession will give you a sense of purpose or will it become a burden, whether the demands of being a doctor will weigh on you or build you up.You must think deeply whether the generations-old tradition can be made yours, how you can accept its ethos for the good that it engenders and commit to improving those faults where the tradition is still found lacking. These questions will never be answered in full, but as you develop your own sense of what it means to be a professional physician, the questions become easier. The divergence between what you want and what the profession wants from you become smaller.

Let me give you a roadmap for your journey. A professional has specialized knowledge, is prepared to utilize that knowledge for the sake of its purpose, and has an internal motivation to use that knowledge through a mandate of service. This latter component differentiates the professional from the professionally qualified.

In your years in medical school, the first two components come through instructionyour professors can teach you what you need to know and how to perform clinical activities.Of course, a more apt description would be that they can inform you of what you need to know and do, but you must learn them on your own.You are not buckets to be filled but rather individuals who must absorb the information and familiarize yourselves with the choreography of clinical practice.

Internal motivation, however, is different. One person cannot give another internal motivationprofessors can give incentives and rewards, like grades and recommendations, but they cannot instill in you the fire or the drive to want to be the best you can be for the simple reason that you expect it of yourselves. That part of your education must, by definition, be self-directed.That part of the journey cannot be paved or even treaded upon by anyone but yourselves.

You should know, however, that you are not alone. You do not have to figure this all out by yourselves.Because the medical profession has a rich history and strong community, you can look to othersboth from the past and in the presentas guides and mentors.Find doctors for whom being a doctor seems natural.Ask them to tell you how they struggled and how they overcame the overwhelm that becoming a doctor entails.Have them relay to you how they negotiate between conflicting priorities, such as when the demands of their personal lives butt up against those of their fiduciary responsibilities.

Dont only listen to their words, watch them, see them as the tell you with pride and satisfaction how becoming a doctor has made them the person that they are.Become envious of the passion that they have, the crows feet that reveal the deep happiness they have when they tell you of the time when they cared for a stranger. When they tell you about their failures, see how they try, but are unable to hide, not the embarrassment of disappointing colleagues but their shame of not living up to their own standards. If being a doctor were only an occupation, the entire being of these mentors would not speak to you.Their words will tell you different stories than the language of their bodies.Only in a professional does ones voice sing in harmony with ones being.Want that for yourselves, for only a life undivided is a life of full integrity.

When you read about the medical profession, inquire not only of the challenges and complexities of current health system or the opportunities that future biotechnology and medical advances will bring.Learn about the history of medicine and of its relationship with society, religion, and philosophy through time.Let the lessons of history speak to you as an insider, as one who intends to carry that history forward into the future.See physicians of old as spiritual family members with whom you share a common bond.Appreciate how they have given you their inheritance of knowledge and professional purpose for you to pass down to others.Do not ignore even those family members who make you shudderwhose cruelty to others in the name of medicine have tarnished the family name for generations.Remember them to rectify the professions reputation. While you may be able to disavow them, you will not be able to disown them, since the world will remind you how you share their name.

Only at the end of your medical school training will you actually enter the medical profession. For the four years of your training, you will be somewhere in betweennot simply a student, not quite a doctor. When you wear your white coat, people will treat you according to what your coat signifies to them. They will most likely not know that its true significance falls somewhat short of what it projects.Do not be fooled by their misconceptions. It is easy to think that the coat makes the professional. The most valuable lesson to learn from your white coat is humility. While many define this virtue as a vice, it is one of the most valuable tools in your metaphorical black bag.Humility is not a low view of ones own importance; it is a recognition both that you can be better than you currently are and that you cannot succeed alone.Wear your white coat with pride in the goals that you have set for yourself and not in what you have not yet achieved.Let this sense of pride in who you will become join with the humility of knowing who you currently are so that together they push you forward, give you reason to learn more and try harder. The apprentice only becomes a master when he or she can be trusted with the craft.

When you do finish medical school, you will take an oath of initiation. At this point, your voice proclaims the message of your profession. An oath is much more than a personal promise or an employment contract, just as a professional is different from a neighbor or employee.Oaths, like the professionals who proclaim them, have moral weight that transcends the agreement that the relevant parties make.An oath binds its maker through a public declaration and in the name of something greater. While a broken promise hurts the intended benefactor, a forsaken oath hurts both the intended benefactor and the one who foreswears it.Most importantly, unlike promises or contracts, which are declarations of intention, an oath is a performative utterance. It is the first act that you will carry out as a physician. It is the act of declaring who one is, not simply what one intends to do.As such, an oath, just like becoming a professional, does not so much change the future as it changes the meaning of the future for the one who declares it.

As you go through your next years in medical school and you begin to recognize that your personal goals and values align with your professional ones, you will realize that your profession is your platform and your purpose.A platform because it is the raised structure that holds you and your message above the fray so that you can lead others with a clear and understood standing of authority.A purpose because it will help you determine how far you may go, for whom you undertake responsibility, and how meaningful the effort is to you.

Take these years to develop your voiceto give it something worth saying.Learn the knowledge and develop the skills that that you will need to become the authority that the profession and your future patients will demand that you become. Most importantly, take time to reflect.Make the profession your own and at the same time give your whole selves to it.Learn how to merge your voice with those that came before so that you can be heard individually yet in harmony.Learn to speak not from a script but from your heart, with all the strength that you can muster.Only then will your message speak to everyone around you.

I wish you the very best on your journey.

Sincerely,

Ira Bedzow

Millions of kids told full return to school in fall unlikely – The Associated Press

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) Millions more children in the U.S. learned Friday that theyre unlikely to return to classrooms full time in the fall because of the coronavirus pandemic as death tolls reached new highs.

It came as many states particularly in the Sunbelt struggled to cope with the surge and governments worldwide tried to control fresh outbreaks. In a sign of how the virus is galloping around the globe, the World Health Organization reported nearly a quarter-million new infections in a single day.

In the U.S., teams of military medics were deployed in Texas and California to help hospitals deluged by coronavirus patients. The two most populous states each reported roughly 10,000 new cases and some of their highest death counts since the pandemic began. Big numbers in Florida, Arizona and other states also are helping drive the U.S. resurgence thats forcing states to rethink the school year.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom laid out strict criteria for school reopenings that makes classroom instruction unlikely for most districts. The Democrats rules mandate that students above second grade and all staff wear masks.

Texas gave public schools permission to stay closed for more than 5 million students well into the fall. Under the guidelines, schools can hold online-only instruction for up to the first eight weeks, potentially pushing a return to campus in some cities until November.

Most Chicago children would return to the classroom just two days a week and spend the other three days learning remotely under a tentative plan outlined by officials from the nations third-largest school district. A final decision for fall classes for the districts more than 300,000 students wont come until late August.

Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds, a Republican, announced she will override school districts and require students to spend at least half of their schooling in classrooms, drawing criticism from the state teachers union.

The uncertainty about the way to safely restart schools has parents like Ivette Garcia of Orange Park, Florida, struggling with what to do. When she learned her school district only had two options this fall, in-person or virtual lessons, she decided to keep her kindergarten son home. She plans to schedule instruction before and after work, with her parents reinforcing education in between.

The schools start date is less than 30 days away. And I dont feel that theres a very great plan in place that makes me feel comfortable enough to send my baby to school and then return back to our family dynamic, Garcia said.

Several states have been reporting record numbers of COVID-19 this week, contributing to a surge in the national death rate. The seven-day rolling average for daily new deaths has risen 34% from two weeks ago, while the case count in that period shot up 43%.

Texas reported a record 174 new deaths, and more than 10,000 additional cases for the fourth consecutive day. Californias nearly 10,000 confirmed cases were its third-highest daily total, and it recorded 130 deaths during a week of seesawing infection numbers.

Florida reported 128 new deaths Friday and 11,345 additional cases.

There were signs across the Sunbelt that the virus was stretching authorities capacity to respond. The medical examiners office in metro Phoenix has gotten portable storage coolers and ordered more to handle an influx of bodies reminiscent of New York City at the height of the pandemic there.

In Houston, an 86-person Army medical team worked to take over a wing of United Memorial Medical Center. In California, military doctors, nurses and other health care specialists were being deployed to eight hospitals facing staffing shortages.

Some hospitals in South Carolina also were being squeezed: The number of patients with COVID-19 is increasing rapidly, while nurses and other workers are getting infected when they are off work, said Dr. Wendell James, a senior vice president with Prisma Health who is based in Greenville.

The majority of the illness we see in our nursing staffs and our support staff is community spread, he said. Almost all of it I cant control.

In Florida, Miami-area authorities began stepping up enforcement of a mask requirement. Code and fire inspectors have authority to issue tickets of up to $100 for individuals and $500 for businesses not complying with guidelines to wear masks and practice social distancing. Police already had that power.

Shaun Alley, assistant manager of Blue Collar, a Miami comfort food restaurant, said all of the customers eat outside on picnic tables and are asked to wear masks when not eating.

We tell people flat out: Either you comply or we have the right not to serve you, he said. We havent had any issues so far.

At least half of all states have adopted requirements for wearing face coverings.

But in Georgia, Republican Gov. Brian Kemp has banned cities and counties from requiring face coverings. He sued Atlanta late Thursday to prevent it from defying his order, and Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms said she was prepared to go to court to maintain the requirement.

Globally, confirmed cases surpassed 14 million, according to a tally from Johns Hopkins University, and COVID-19 deaths topped 600,000. WHO reported a single-day record of new infections: over 237,000. Experts believe that the true numbers are even higher.

Indias total confirmed cases surpassed 1 million Friday, the third-highest in the world behind the United States and Brazil and its death toll reached more than 25,000. That followed an announcement Thursday that Brazils confirmed cases exceeded 2 million, including 76,000 deaths.

The surge in India where experts believe the vast majority of cases are still being missed drove home concerns over the readiness of some countries to cope with outbreaks that could test feeble health care systems.

In sub-Saharan Africa, which already had the worlds greatest shortage of medical personnel, nearly 10,000 health workers in 40 countries have been infected, WHO said.

Health officials in Spain, one of the hardest-hit countries earlier in the pandemic, asked Barcelonas 5.5 million residents to stay home as much as possible to stem the viruss spread.

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson charted a different course, announcing that as of Aug. 1, the government would no longer ask people to avoid public transit or work from home.

The U.K.s official death toll, which stood at more than 45,000, has for several weeks been the highest in Europe.

Westneat: ‘Breath of liberty’ and some hot air – The Columbian

Maybe just this one eensy-weensy time.

The laissez-faire capitalist Ayn Rand Institute, in California, went still further, rationalizing that going on the dole this one time would somehow strike a moral blow against big government: It would be a terrible injustice for pro-capitalists to step aside and leave the funds to those indifferent or actively hostile to capitalism, it explained in a statement, titled To Take, or Not to Take.

Look, Im a capitalist too, but what a crock all that is. As I said up top: Its fine for any qualified business or association to get the relief money. The programs point was to disperse the money as rapidly and widely as possible, to keep the economy somewhat functioning during this pandemic.

But To Take, or Not to Take that is not the question. The coronavirus has shown, if nothing else, that we all sometimes need a little boost. We have just been treated to a national case study in how we all depend on strong governmental social and health safety nets and not only when theres a pandemic.

This is not about taking at all, or shouldnt be. Its about giving back paying for basic good government and then, sometimes, when you need it, receiving help.

So can we at least dispense now with the breath-of-liberty canards? The drowning the government in the bathtub nonsense? The whole no-tax bluster?

Because now we know: Even groups that put freedom right in their name have apparently concluded theyre A-OK with some big-government, debt-financed, taxpayer-backed collectivism after all.

Feather: Burrillville’s actions are embarrassing – Valley Breeze

7/15/2020

If I were a resident of Burrillville, I would be embarrassed by the Town Councils resistance to the recommendations and directives of the governor and the Rhode Island Department of Health regarding efforts to slow the spread of COVID-19.

In America, self-centeredness and hyper-individualism are making news everywhere. At ice cream shops we have children in adult bodies stamping their feet because they cant get what they want when they want it.

The greatest successes this country has ever achieved have been the result of collective effort, of unified purpose, of shared sacrifice.

The Ayn Rand-ian types among us ought to comply, for the sake of all of us, with crucial governmental directives designed to mitigate the spread of the virus. For all re-opened businesses in Burrillville and around the state, the solution is simple: no mask, no service.
