Researchers Discover Two Paths of Aging and New Insights on Promoting Healthspan – UC San Diego Health

Yeast cells with the same DNA under the same environment show different structures of mitochondria (green) and the nucleolus (red), which may underlie the causes of different aging paths. Single and double arrowheads point to two cells with distinct mitochondrial and nucleolar morphologies.

Molecular biologists and bioengineers at the University of California San Diego have unraveled key mechanisms behind the mysteries of aging. They isolated two distinct paths that cells travel during aging and engineered a new way to genetically program these processes to extend lifespan.

The research is described July 17 in the journal Science.

Our lifespans as humans are determined by the aging of our individual cells. To understand whether different cells age at the same rate and by the same cause, the researchers studied aging in the budding yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae, a tractable model for investigating mechanisms of aging, including the aging paths of skin and stem cells.

The scientists discovered that cells of the same genetic material and within the same environment can age in strikingly distinct ways, their fates unfolding through different molecular and cellular trajectories. Using microfluidics, computer modeling and other techniques, they found that about half of the cells age through a gradual decline in the stability of the nucleolus, a region of nuclear DNA where key components of protein-producing factories are synthesized. In contrast, the other half age due to dysfunction of their mitochondria, the energy production units of cells.

The cells embark upon either the nucleolar or mitochondrial path early in life, and follow this aging route throughout their entire lifespan through decline and death. At the heart of the controls the researchers found a master circuit that guides these aging processes.

To understand how cells make these decisions, we identified the molecular processes underlying each aging route and the connections among them, revealing a molecular circuit that controls cell aging, analogous to electric circuits that control home appliances, said Nan Hao, senior author of the study and an associate professor in the Section of Molecular Biology, Division of Biological Sciences.

Having developed a new model of the aging landscape, Hao and his coauthors found they could manipulate and ultimately optimize the aging process. Computer simulations helped the researchers reprogram the master molecular circuit by modifying its DNA, allowing them to genetically create a novel aging route that features a dramatically extended lifespan.

UC San Diego biologists and bioengineers identified a master aging circuit that opens the door to genetically engineered prolonged life. Erik Jepsen/UC San Diego Publications

Our study raises the possibility of rationally designing gene or chemical-based therapies to reprogram how human cells age, with a goal of effectively delaying human aging and extending human healthspan, said Hao.

The researchers will now test their new model in more complex cells and organisms and eventually in human cells to seek similar aging routes. They also plan to test chemical techniques and evaluate how combinations of therapeutics and drug cocktails might guide pathways to longevity.

Much of the work featured in this paper benefits from a strong interdisciplinary team that was assembled, said Biological Sciences Professor of Molecular Biology Lorraine Pillus, one of the studys coauthors. One great aspect of the team is that we not only do the modeling but we then do the experimentation to determine whether the model is correct or not. These iterative processes are critical for the work that we are doing.

The research team included Yang Li (postdoctoral scholar, Biological Sciences), Yanfei Jiang (postdoctoral scholar, Biological Sciences), Julie Paxman (graduate student, Biological Sciences), Richard OLaughlin (former bioengineering graduate student, Jacobs School of Engineering), Stephen Klepin (laboratory assistant, Biological Sciences), Yuelian Zhu (visiting scholar), Lorraine Pillus (professor, Biological Sciences and Moores Cancer Center), Lev Tsimring (research scientist, BioCircuits Institute), Jeff Hasty (professor, Biological Sciences, Jacobs School of Engineering and BioCircuits Institute) and Nan Hao (associate professor, Biological Sciences and BioCircuits Institute).

The National Institutes of HealthNational Institute on Aging (AG056440) and National Science Foundation Molecular and Cellular Biosciences (1616127 and 1716841) supported the research. Julie Paxman was supported by UC San Diegos Cellular and Molecular Genetics training program, (5T32GM007240).

Matthew in the Middle: Mask it or casket – Eureka Times-Standard

The whole world is laughing at us. They cant understand why wearing a mask in public has become a political culture issue and not a medical necessity. It could be the fact that many otherwise intelligent Americans have been indoctrinated by Faux News and right-wing radio to only believe what they tell them and to distrust all other Main Stream Media, including science and health experts. So now, many people equate wearing a mask as anti-Trump and not wearing a mask as being pro-Trump instead of caring about the health and well-being of our fellow citizens.

This has brought out Karens, lots of angry Karens. We saw Target Karen (AKA Melissa Rein Lively of Scottsdale, Arizona) who actually filmed herself destroying a mask display: Im not playing any more fing games. This is over. This is over. This is over, she said again and again as she threw all the masks on the ground before being approached by stunned Target store employees. Why cant I do this? Because Im a blonde white woman? Im wearing a $40,000 Rolex and I dont have the right to do this? Then we saw Costco Karen, a 77-year old woman who wouldnt wear her mask as she said, I am a United States citizen. I have Constitutional rights, before sitting down in protest on the Costco cement floor like a 3-year old having a temper tantrum.

We witnessed Trader Joes Karen (AKA Sandrella Zadikian) losing it while being kicked out of the North Hollywood store during the grand opening for not wearing a mask. Youre fing pigs. Youre all fing Democratic pigs. All of you. That man is harassing me for not wearing a mask. I have a breathing problem. Sure didnt seem like she had any breathing problems when Karen was screaming at everyone. Then there was Home Depot Karen (AKA Teri Hill) who said while shopping maskless, Yes, I am entitled. Im white. Im a woman I believe in white power.

Now we have Starbucks Karen (AKA Amber Lynn Gilles) who posted a pic of barista Lenin Gutierrez on Facebook after she was kicked out of Starbucks for not wearing a mask. Someone started a GoFundMe for tip money for Gutierrez and raised over $100,000. Now Gilles claims she was discriminated against and wants half of that money.

My personal favorite was during public comments of the Ventura County Board of Supervisors meeting where Deborah Baber wearing her Trump 2020 T-shirt, red MAGA cap and holding up a Trump 2020 sign said. I protest face coverings I used to be free. I am not a terrorist. I am not antifa. I am not a sex slave who wears masks. I am not into sadomasochism and bondage, equating wearing a face mask to sex hoods. I am a proud Trump Republican yearning to be free again. Did someone kidnap this woman, transport her across an ocean and put her in chains to be sold as a slave that I missed? Scott Phillips, a Scottsdale, Arizona city councilmember said during a mask protest, I cant breathe. I cant breathe. I cant breathe, while taking off his mask. You can search all these on Google or YouTube and laugh for yourself. What do all these people have in common? 99.9% are Republican, white and ignorant.

Communicable diseases have been with us throughout history. Weve survived malaria, polio, tuberculosis, leprosy, smallpox and influenza. Pandemics happen every so often. 102 years ago the Spanish flu (which didnt start in Spain) ravaged the world. Some idiot posted on Twitter, There was no vaccine for the Spanish flu! Yes, thats correct. It burned out after killing an estimated 50 million people worldwide. We will defeat COVID-19 if we all work together by avoiding crowds, wearing masks in public, social distancing at least six feet and washing our hands often.

If you choose to not wear a mask, then you also have to choose to get sick and die at your home and not clog up our hospitals.

Matthew Owen resides in Eureka, and believes the First Amendment allows for free speech, even when married to a Humboldt County supervisor.

NASA confirms plans for Crew Dragon splashdown Aug. 2, weather permitting – Spaceflight Now

In this image taken July 1, a spacewalking astronaut snapped a view of the Crew Dragon spacecraft (at right) docked with the International Space Station. Japans HTV cargo ship, at bottom in gold, is also seen attached to the space station. Credit: NASA

Assuming good weather and a smooth final few weeks on the International Space Station, astronauts Doug Hurley and Bob Behnken are scheduled to undock from the orbiting research outpost Aug. 1 and return to Earth the next day to wrap up a 64-day test flight of SpaceXs Crew Dragon spaceship.

NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine confirmed the target dates for the Crew Dragons undocking and splashdown in a tweet Friday.

A few hours after departing the space station, the Crew Dragon will fire its Draco thrusters for a braking burn and re-enter the atmosphere, targeting a parachute-assisted splashdown at sea.

Splashdown is targeted for Aug. 2, he tweeted. Weather will drive the actual date. Stay tuned.

NASA and SpaceX are assessing return zones in the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico.

Officials originally selected landing sites in the Atlantic east of Cape Canaveral and Jacksonville, and a location in the Gulf of Mexico south of Pensacola, Florida. Last month, NASA said officials were evaluating additional candidate locations for the Crew Dragons splashdown off Daytona Beach, Tampa, Tallahassee and Panama City.

The additional options would give mission managers more flexibility in deciding when to approve the Crew Dragons undocking and re-entry.

The final selection of a landing site will hinge on weather and sea states. Assessments of climatology suggest conditions in the Gulf of Mexico have a higher likelihood of being favorable for splashdown in early August, sources said.

Hurley and Behnken will be the first NASA astronauts to return to Earth for a water landing since Tom Stafford, Deke Slayton and Vance Brand splashed down July 24, 1975, in an Apollo command module to end the Apollo-Soyuz mission, which included the first docking between U.S. and Russian spacecraft in orbit.

Probably the biggest area of concern is just how long its been since humans have done this on the U.S. side splashing down in the water and then being recovered, Behnken said from the space station in a recent interview with the Washington Post.

SpaceX has practiced recovering capsules at sea with cargo missions returning from the space station, an unpiloted Crew Dragon test flight last year, and a series of training sessions and rehearsals.

Theyve done that many times at this point, and theyve recovered those capsules pretty successfully and managed to get the timeline relatively short so that we expect to be back on the ship within an hour of splashdown, Behnken said.

The crew is expected to remain inside the Dragon until the spacecraft is hoisted onto the deck of SpaceXs recovery ship.

The Crew Dragon spacecraft launched with Hurley and Behnken on top of a Falcon 9 rocket May 30 from NASAs Kennedy Space Center in Florida. It was the first launch of astronauts into orbit from U.S. soil since the last space shuttle launch July 8, 2011.

The crew capsule autonomously docked with the International Space Station on May 31, allowing Hurley and Behnken to join space station commander Chris Cassidy and Russian cosmonauts Anatoly Ivanishin and Ivan Vagner.

The primary goal of the Crew Dragons first mission with astronauts named Demo-2, or DM-2 is to test the SpaceX-built capsules performance before it begins regular crew rotation flights to the space station later this year. SpaceX successfully flew an unpiloted Crew Dragon to and from the space station in 2019 before NASA approved the capsule to carry astronauts.

Hurley and Behnken have also assisted the space stations long-duration crew with experiments, maintenance and other tasks. The Demo-2 mission was originally planned to last no more than a couple of weeks, but NASA announced earlier this year the test flight would be extended to expand the size of the crew on the space station.

At the time, Cassidy was the final U.S. astronaut NASA had booked to fly on Russias Soyuz spacecraft, which has been the sole vehicle to carry crews to and from the space station since the end of the space shuttle program nearly a decade ago. That meant Cassidy would have been the only U.S. astronaut on the station for most of the time from April through October, limiting opportunities for research and spacewalks needed to upgrade and maintain the orbiting complex.

With the extended Demo-2 mission, Behnken has joined Cassidy on three spacewalks since June 26 to finish replacing batteries on the space stations solar power truss. One more spacewalk by Behnken and Cassidy is scheduled for Tuesday, July 21.

NASA says the Crew Dragon has performed well since its launch. While docked at the space station, the capsule has been put into hibernation and awakened several times to check its availability to serve as a lifeboat for the crew if they had to evacuate the orbiting research lab in an emergency.

Ground teams have also monitored the performance of the Crew Dragons body-mounted solar arrays, which can degrade over time due to the harsh environment in low Earth orbit. So far, the power-generating arrays have performed better than predicted.

Last week, four of the space station crew members boarded the Crew Dragon to assess the ships ability to accommodate a four-person crew in orbit, particularly when astronauts will be required to sleep on the vehicle during the transit to and from the space station.

If the Demo-2 mission returns to Earth in early August, SpaceX and NASA will press ahead with preparations for the first operational Crew Dragon mission. That flight, designated Crew-1, is currently scheduled to launch from the Kennedy Space Center in mid-to-late September.

Steve Stich, NASAs commercial crew program manager, said last month that engineers will need around six weeks evaluate data from the Crew Dragon test flight before formally certifying the capsule as ready for operational missions.

The brand new Falcon 9 first stage booster for the Crew-1 mission arrived Tuesday at Cape Canaveral for launch preparations. The Crew Dragon spacecraft for the Crew-1 mission will arrive in the coming weeks.

NASA astronauts Mike Hopkins, Victor Glover, Shannon Walker, and Japanese astronaut Soichi Noguchi are training for the Crew-1 mission. Noguchi, a veteran of two previous space missions, will become the first astronaut to launch on the space shuttle, Russias Soyuz rocket, and SpaceXs Falcon 9.

NASA has ordered six crew rotation flights on the Crew Dragon spacecraft through 2024, each carrying four astronauts to and from the space station on expeditions lasting as long as 210 days. SpaceX also has agreements with Axiom Space and Space Adventures, two commercial space companies, to fly private citizens into orbit on shorter-duration Crew Dragon missions beginning as soon as late 2021.

SpaceX developed the Crew Dragon under contract to NASA, but the company is free to use the spacecraft for commercial flights without NASA involvement.

NASA has a similar contract with Boeing for development of the Starliner crew capsule, which has yet to fly with astronauts. An unpiloted Starliner test flight was cut short before docking with the space station in December, and Boeing plans to fly a second demonstration mission later this year before a test flight with a crew on-board in early 2021.

There are several modifications to the capsule SpaceX is building for the Crew-1 mission, although major components such as the capsules life support system and guidance, navigation and control systems are largely unchanged from the Demo-2 configuration.

The Crew-1 vehicle can land in a little bit higher wind state, Stich said in a press briefing May 31. SpaceX has changed some of the outer composite panels to make that a little stronger.

It also has the capability not only dock to the forward port of the space station, but it can go to the zenith (space-facing) port as well, so it has that capability, and it has a couple other features, Stich said.

NASA and SpaceX have not released the official wind and sea state constraints officials will use to determine the final schedule and location for the Demo-2 splashdown.

Our view: Amarillo’s Holly Ridings is the very definition of role model and local hero – Brownwood Bulletin

AGN Media Editorial Board

We would be remiss if we didnt pause in the middle of all the seemingly urgent stuff going on to recognize something tremendously important that people could have missed.

It involves the recognition of a true hero, a person who has built an impressive record of achievement and someone who has never forgotten her Amarillo roots. Likewise, the city has not forgotten her, nor are they likely to in the near future as she is expected to direct the next moon landing.

During Tuesdays virtual City Council meeting, the group recognized Holly Ridings with a proclamation and a key. Now, we know what you might be thinking. A key to the city? Not quite. Ridings, who is the first woman to serve as chief flight director at NASA, was presented with a key to the "moon and beyond." The rest of the inscription on the key reads: "Taking us from Olsen Elementary to out of this world. Amarillo is proud of you!"

For those who may not know, Ridings grew up in Amarillo, attending Olsen and then Crockett Middle School before graduating from Tascosa High School, which inducted her into its hall of fame during ceremonies last year. Ridings, who still has family in Amarillo, has been a steadfast goodwill ambassador for the city.

Her career path began to come into view in 1986, when as a sixth-grader, she watched with the rest of the nation as the Challenger space shuttle tragedy unfolded in real time on television. In an interview with Air and Space magazine in its June edition, she epiphany represented by that moment would inform her life for years to come. She loved space and problem-solving and knew what she wanted to do with her life.

"Who would have imagined that a tragedy in 1986 (the explosion of the space shuttle Challenger) would cause a sixth-grade student to set a course for her lifes work?" said Amarillo City Council member Howard Smith, a long-time friend of the family. "But having known Holly for years, it is easy to believe that she would become a problem solver. Her ability to aim high has been a pattern all of her life."

Of course, Ridings wasnt through in Amarillo. She was part of Tascosas state championship basketball team in the early 1990s and was named to the all-tournament team as a forward for the Lady Rebels.

After earning a bachelors degree in mechanical engineering from Texas A&M, she joined NASA in 1998. Her career there began as a flight controller in the thermal operations group, according to the NASA news release announcing her most recent appointment. Now, she will lead the group directing human spaceflight missions from Mission Control Center at the Johnson Space Center in Houston.

Named to her new role in September 2018, she will lead a group of 32 active flight directors and flight directors-in-training, including integrating American-made commercial crew spacecraft into the fleet of vehicles servicing the orbiting laboratory, and Orion spacecraft missions to the moon and beyond. For context, think about the Tom Hanks movie "Apollo 13" and the role of NASA legend Gene Kranz as played by Ed Harris.

In other words, this is a big deal.

Her selection was announced by NASA Director of Flight Operations Brian Kelley. "Holly has proven herself a leader among a group of highly talented flight directors," he said. "I know she will excel in this unique and critical leadership position providing direction for the safety and success of human spaceflight missions. She will lead the team during exciting times as they adapt to support future missions with commercial partners and beyond low-Earth orbit."

Her career path at NASA has seen a steady upward trajectory since being named a flight director in 2005. Highlights include serving as the lead flight director for missions including International Space Station Expedition 16 in 2007-08, the space shuttle program mission STS-127 in 2009 and the first SpaceX Dragon cargo spacecraft mission to the space station in 2012.

"From classroom to Camp Fire programs to athletics, she just sets her goals and the rest is history," Smith said. "Some of that history at NASA is yet to be written. I have no doubt that Holly will help write it."

The official proclamation includes recognition of her "outstanding qualities of leadership and dedication. We acknowledge her exceptional service to this nation and NASAs space program. The City of Amarillo, Texas, recognizes your accomplishments and celebrates our Hometown Hero for making a difference in being a role model for so many. We are Amarillo proud!"

So are we. We salute Holly Ridings and congratulate her on all of her achievements. She is not only a great role model for young women (although she certainly is that). She is a great role model, period.

The Indian outer space programme has achieved an extraordinary progress in the last decade. The country is already known as the bright spot of the global economy, relying on a vast internal market, a highly young population and as one of the most sustained growth rates among the BRICS: all characteristics which shape it one of the top ten economies in the world.

Additionally, India displays successful space missions in its portfolio along with its proficiency in operating low-cost space projects which have made it a tremendously esteemed role-player in the international environment.

The agenda for the 2020-2030 decade is busy and crammed with challenging missions planned to land on the Moon and found the first Indian solar observatory in 2020, orbit around Venus and Mars in the two-year period 2023-2024, engage the countrys first crewed orbital spaceflight mission in 2021 and install the first modular space station in 2030. Thus, this ambitious calendar is the square one to drive India to the top position among space-faring nations by the end of the decade.

The emerging advanced Industry 4.0 made up of Artificial Intelligence (AI), autonomous robots, big data synthesis, hyper-automation and digital manufacturing represents the core of the current decade: hardware and software technologies supplementing real and cyber rooms into cyber-physical systems are overcoming the past Industry 3.0 technologies which have been the fuel of space operations until now.

Flying ant swarm so huge it could be seen from space hits South East – Cambridgeshire Live

A swarm of flying ants spotted over the South-East was so big it could be seen from space.

The Met Offices weather radar picked up the cloud of ants, around 50 miles wide, on their radar over Kent and Sussex earlier this morning (July 18).

On the weather map provided by The Met Office the hoards of ants appeared to be rain clouds but at a closer look it turned out it was the sheer mass of insects setting of the radar.

As well as the larger groups of ants in the South-East there were smaller swarms which can be seen over London.

The full tweet from the the forecaster said: "It's not raining in London, Kent or Sussex, but our radar says otherwise...

"The radar is actually picking up a swarm of flying ants across the southeast. During the summer ants can take to the skies in a mass emergence usually on warm, humid and windless days flying ant day. "

This latest swarm of insects comes as part of the yearly phenomenon known as Flying Ant Day. Despite its name it's really a series of days each summer when ants seem to take over.

This day changes every year and is sometimes several different days in the summer. In past studies carried out by the Royal Society of Biology and its volunteers, it was found flying ants can be spotted from June and the start of September.

Normally during the warmer months here in the UK ants take to the skies in a mass emergence usually on warm, humid and windless days.

This phenomenon happens when males and new queens venture out of the nest to mate, according to theRoyal Society of Biology.

Many colonies do this at the same time when the weather conditions are just right.

Ants, including the black garden antLasius niger,do this to start new colonies.

New ant colonies start when a female flying ant leaves their former colony to start a new one.

You can spot the queen because she is larger than the female worker ants and has wings.

Both males and females fly on this day, going away from their nest to try and mate with an ant from another colony and begin a new colony.

The Royal Society of Biology explains the mating process: "When far enough away, the females and males commence breeding, with mating taking place during flight and the male dying shortly after.

"The fertilised female then lands, chews off her wings, then goes about creating a new colony or finding an existing one and starts to produce offspring."

A group of people gathered in Lynchburg for a freedom walk and rally – WFXRtv.com

LYNCHBURG, Va- (WFXR) New gun laws took effect July first, and some say they arent happy about it.

A group of people gathered in downtown Lynchburg at the riverfront park for one cause.

President of right to Bear arms Virginia Brandon Howard says, We educate and advocate for the individuals and citizens protection of the second amendment U.S. Constitution as well as the laws in the Commonwealth.

With long guns in hand and others strapped to their waist, the group took two-mile freedom walk around downtown Lynchburg, to demonstrate.

Gun owner John Hinkle says, To show the public that were not scary black rifle people. We come from all areas of civilian life, and were not out to harm anybody and were not here to aggravate anybody and were not aggressive we are peaceful citizens.

The group wants to educate the public and let them know there are safe ways to carry firearms and exercise their rights.

We show them law abiding citizens can safely and legally carry a fire arm in public responsibly, says Howard.

Attorney Chuck Smith says, We are here to tell them to know youre not gonna touch our second amendment right not now, Not tomorrow, not ever.

Gun supporters here at the rally took a stance in regards to the new gun control laws here in the commonwealth.

As APPOMATTOX supervisor, I am introducing a resolution on Monday night board meeting to propose no new gun laws, says Hinkle.

I think whether you are a gun lover or a regular citizen. You have a stake in whether the constitutional right can be divvied up by Governor Northam, says Smith. Whether those can be passed to individual cities and counties.

With a peaceful freedom walk and rally. Their message is clear when it comes to those controversial laws.

Were not just here trying to protect just the Second Amendment, says Smith. Our challenge is against a government that believes they can change anything of the United States Constitution at their whim.

What is your position on the role of public funding of education in Michigan? What measures do you support/propose to improve educational outcomes and accessibility for all Michigan students?

ADAMS: Our kids are the future so its important that we invest in them. There is a significant technology gap in our local schools causing kids from wealthier parts of the State to have an advantage upon entering college and trade schools. Lets bring our kids up to speed and secure their future by providing necessary education funding. Providing a good education is critical to our way of life.

BRYANT: As a former substitute teacher its my professional opinion that Michigan has never made a solid investment in education. A $1.5 billion fund from the lottery and the gas tax are ineffective. We have to reinvest in our education system to ensure our students have the technology and resources to ensure they are proficient and that their schools are safe. Furthermore, it is imperative that we develop career pipelines with our intermediate school districts for education, agriculture, and healthcare.

HAMMOND: Our state legislature NEEDS to stop stealing from the school aid budget. We have a priorities problem with k-12 education, not a scarcity problem. The legislature, instead of supporting public education, moves its money into economic development programs that subsidize corporate industries- meanwhile setting up accountability programs that punish poor districts for having substandard education outcomes. Supporting our education means putting public schools first, it means recognizing that outcomes are determined by ZIP Code, and we need to equitably fund school districts.

ONEAL: Increased School Funding is critical to support our public education systems. Additionally, increased pay for teachers and advanced training education for all new and tenured educators as well. Important measures would include Infrastructure for all schools in Michigan that would support access to intranet technology for all students. Also, Investment in special education and special needs students would provide the learning platforms for all special education and special needs children in the State of Michigan.

What policies do you support to increase jobs and help Michigan residents improve their economic positions, in general and given the pandemic?

ADAMS: Our jobs are a part of our everyday lives and they are often what binds us together as a community. We need a system that promotes lifelong learning with job training and preparation that helps both those entering the workforce and those who are currently working on the job. Such training fosters continued improvement to ones marketability and skills in order to take advantage of new opportunities. Local Business - Small businesses are the growth engine of any economy and I will work to support and enhance the local business community and ensure that wealth generated here, stays here.

BRYANT: To ensure that the families of Saginaw County and the surrounding communities are able to bounce back from financial hardship that has affected them in recent years, I plan to work with my fellow legislators to draft a comprehensive Economic Recovery Plan that: Focuses on collaboration between the private and public sectors, Offers relief for families under hardship,Re-invests in our state schools and increases access and affordability to home loans and educational loans

HAMMOND: In my campaign, Ive introduced the concept of a dignified wage. It includes at least a $15/hr living wage tied to inflation, but also sets a standard for public assistance. Our unemployment and welfare system in Michigan is broken- this pandemic has put that issue on full display. In order to create sustainable, well-paying jobs, Michigan must further job training programs, as well as revitalize its public education system. Unions must be protected and welcomed. Also, the Green New Michigan plan includes the creation of tens of thousand of Green industry jobs.

ONEAL: In the wake of COVID-19 and the related unemployment, our economy is hurting. Our families are hurting. We must put people back to work in the areas that are most essential to the quality of life in Michigan. Small businesses are the backbone of our communities economy. We will focus on providing and bolstering recourses and technology that support the creation and the expansion of small businesses for business owners. Also, our policies will work with labor groups and businesses to help cut out some of the paperwork to make it easier to get what they need.

What state policies do you support regarding Michigan elections, voting and campaign funding? Do you support mailing ballots to all eligible voters?

ADAMS: Im pleased to see an Independent Citizens Commission handling the redrawing of electoral districts. Michigan effectively has Vote by Mail with our No Reason Absentee Voting law.

BRYANT: I support mailing ballots to all eligible voters. The passage of Proposal 2 and 3 have propelled Michigan to creating a safer and more secure democracy. I collected signatures for both proposals because the residents of Michigan deserve to have fair legislative districts and ease of access to letting their voices be heard. Access to voting is paramount to a true democracy. Proposal 3, a constitutional amendment passed by the voters has eliminated barriers to voting and we must do all we can to keep these constitutional amendments. Voting should be confidential and convenient.

HAMMOND: Michigan is ranked worst in transparency, accountability, and dark money in politics. I absolutely support mailing ballots to all eligible voters, AND not requiring postage costs for the return of those ballots. Also, we must: Reform dark money laws Get rid of revolving doors in Lansing Make our legislature much more accessible and transparent- a Lansing interface that allows citizens to track bills, contact legislators, etc for free. Have stricter guidelines for lobbyists operating in Lansing Fix our term limits Reform our guidelines for political appointments and legislative assistants

ONEAL: Our democracy rights includes the right to a fair and just election process. Therefore, I support same day registration, vote by mail, reduced barriers to voting, straight tickets voting and strong campaign funding guidelines.

What actions or policies do you support to protect Michigans water, air and land for current and future generations? What is your position on energy efficiency and renewable energy?

ADAMS: Michigan is unique among states in that it features some of the most beautiful and pristine waterways, forests and other natural features in the entire country. It is imperative that we protect these features for future generations to come. Further, not only will renewable energy sources help to ensure the maintenance of our natural resources but can be the foundation to a resurgence in Michigans economy. Lets make this state a literal powerhouse by creating green energy right here!

BRYANT: We can no longer pretend climate change is not an urgent environmental crisis. Frankly, if we do not begin to prioritize the health of our dear planet, our quality of life will greatly suffer. One of Michigans greatest assets is its natural resources. Saginaw was once home to 14 industrial manufacturing plants which provided a unique set of challenges from poor air quality to water contamination. We must hold polluters accountable for their failure to act which has greatly accelerated this crisis.*

HAMMOND: I believe that Michigan needs to implement appropriate portions of the Green New Deal in its policy. We have the perfect opportunity, while creating plans to revitalize the degraded infrastructure in our state, to implement mass transit, green technology, and other environmentally-friendly initiatives. Instead, we have horrendous environmental regulations, and allow corporate polluters free reign to dump waste into our lakes, rivers, and aquifers. We must hold polluters accountable, and build an infrastructure that hopefully helps us avoid climate disaster NOW.

ONEAL: Protecting the environment is one more spoke on the wheel of economic development and strong infrastructure. Enacting and enforcing strict standards to protect our air, water, and soil in the 95th district adds healthcare protections as well. Protecting our environment is protecting ourselves and our families. We will work to ensure EPA standards are enforced and strengthened to protect our Great Lakes, our great trust and pride.

How would you address the racial, economic, health, education, etc. inequities, including Michigans 20% of children and 17% of seniors living in poverty?

ADAMS: A few steps not at all exhaustive recommended by University California Berkeley that will decrease inequality are as follows: increase the minimum wage, expand the Earned Income Tax, build assets for working families, invest in education, make the tax code more progressive, and end residential segregation.

BRYANT: COVID-19 did not only illuminate disparities in our healthcare and educational system; but has also forced us to acknowledge again that women and communities of color are not treated equally in America. As we navigate through this health crisis, the heaviest burdens have been placed upon women. Not only is a woman most likely to provide well over 50% of care and schooling in the home, but women are more likely to be considered essential workers. It is the women who will help America recover, and if theyre the ones helping us recover, theyre the ones that need our protection.*

HAMMOND: Fostering social justice in Michigan means dismantling systems that exploit and benefit from injustice. Currently, our governing system and practices here in Michigan perpetuate systemic injustice. Dismantling that system is a difficult and long process, but it starts by electing new, strong leaders that are ready and willing to challenge the status quo. Its time to rid Michigan of corruption and corporate interference in our democracy. Its time to demand that we take issues of injustice and inequity seriously. Its time to elect new, bold leadership to do just that.

ONEAL: We must all work hard to deconstruct or dismantle systemic and discriminatory practices that impact many of the inequities black and brown citizens experience.

Do you believe that Michigan has a gun violence problem? If so, what measures would you support to alleviate this problem?

ADAMS: A lack of gun safety education as well as a general knowledge surrounding Second Amendment rights are whats missing from gun violence dialogue. Further, courses meant to teach conflict resolution should be introduced in schools in communities where gun violence prevails.

BRYANT: Gun Violence is a problem across our Country. However I recognize every American citizen has the right to bear arms. But they should not be used as props to incite violence or rebellion or fear.

HAMMOND: I agree with the 97% of Americans that want to see universal background checks (with no expiring waiting period), loopholes closed, and a ban on assault weapons. To go further, our state regulations when it comes to registration of guns is an absolute mess. For instance, one can legally own a long gun without any registration. We have to clean up our standards so that registration is compulsory and consistent.

ONEAL: No, I believe its the lack of access to opportunities that provides a path forward for many individuals in this country.

Buy Signals On Bitcoin and Ethereum Could Bring Sudden End To Sideways Trend | NewsBTC – newsBTC

While the rest of the crypto market has been soaring, Bitcoin and Ethereum have been trending sideways. The tightening price action has led to boredom and record low volatility.

But a buy signal on each of these two most dominant crypto assets could lead to a sudden change in trend, and hopefully an end to this trading range.

The two largest cryptocurrencies by market cap have been the most stagnant of the bunch. Both Bitcoin and Ethereum have more resembled a stablecoin more so than their explosively volatile former selves.

The uncharacteristic sideways price action in these two assets pushed investors and traders to find opportunities in greener pastures.

Related Reading | Bitcoin Historical Volatility Approaching Zero Could Signal Blossoming Bull Trend

Elsewhere in the crypto market, Chainlink set a new all-time high and several DeFi tokens have skyrocketed as that bandwagon chugs along.

Nearly every major crypto asset had some positive movement, even long cryptocurrency market underperformers like Ripples XRP and Stellars XLM.

Its only been Bitcoin and Ethereum, the two primary market movers and most dominant crypto assets, that have behaved in this manner.

All this could soon change now that a buy setup has appeared on todays daily price chart on the two assets.

Although the number one and number two ranked cryptocurrencies have been trading sideways, there has been enough downside to trigger a buy setup on their USD trading pairs.

On both BTCUSD and ETHUSD, the TD Sequential indicator is signaling a 9 count and imperfect buy setup.

For the buy setup to perfect, todays candle must set a lower low than yesterdays low, pushing to sub $9000.

A rise above roughly $9250 would flip the series green and change the 9 to a 1 candle. A 1 candle signifies the start of a new sequence.

For Ethereum to perfect, the number one altcoin must fall to below $229 per ETH. A rise above $240 would turn the series green and start the sequence over.

Its worth noting that just because the setup is here, it doesnt necessarily guarantee follow-through. The indicator has been highly accurate in cryptocurrency trading but isnt 100% successful.

Related Reading | Sell Signals On Ethereum and Others Could Mean Altcoin Season Is Finished

Recently, sell setups on these same major crypto assets have resulted in no break of the current trading range or end to sideways action. A sell signal also appeared ahead of Chainklink setting new record highs so anything is possible.

If Bitcoin and Ethereum once again shake off any buy or sell signals, the crypto market could experience an even longer bout of stagnancy. If this continues, small- and mid-cap altcoins could continue to outperform.

Ethereums increased gas limit enables network to hit 44 TPS – AMBCrypto English

The Ethereum network has been among one of the few major projects flourishing in the time of a dull market. Even though the price has been unreactive, the ecosystem has been noticing a faster-moving network, due to an increase in the gas limit. According to the data, the Ethereum gas limit has reached a new all-time high of 12,500,000 from 10,000,000. This happened after the vote by Ethereum miners to increase the block gas limit by 25%.

According to data provided by the Co-founder and Chief Architect of bloXroute Labs, Aleksandar Kuzmanovic, this increase in the gas limit was modest and implied that a much higher limit can be put in place.

An increase in gas price did not discourage the on-chain transaction which was noted to have increased. The transactions had increased to 44 per second, compared to the previous limit of around 35. As the number of transactions per second increased, with a stable on-chain volume, it suggested that the surge in the total gas usage likely originated from the increased use of more complex smart contracts which required more gas.

As the network remained highly active and the blocks remained full, the need for another increase in the gas limit was visible. Along with an increase in transactions being processed the number of addresses holding 1+ coins also has peaked to mark an ATH. According to data provider Glassnode, 1.083 million addresses now held 1+ ETH coins.

Another important metric that highlighted Ethereums network health was the Uncle rate. It is the rate at which Ethereums blockchain orphans blocks. According to data collated from the mining pool, it can be said that the network was healthy and could handle a higher volume of TPS.

Binance Report: VeChain (VET) Delivered More than 40% Return in June – Ethereum World News

Quick take:

The market action surrounding many altcoins is giving the impression of an altseason. This was explored in an earlier analysis that explained how an altseason could be upon the crypto-verse as a result of Bitcoins social dominance reducing significantly.

Furthermore, Ethereums gains against Bitcoin on the ETH/BTC pair is indicative of altcoins soon having a chance to thrive in the crypto markets. Evidence of an altseason was also demonstrated by a new All-time high of the ShitCoin perpetual contract on FTX.com.

One of the altcoins doing particularly well in the crypto markets is VeChain (VET). According to the team at Binance research, VeChain has had a phenomenal month of June delivering over 40% in gains.

The team shared this observation in the June edition of the monthly Binance trading report where they explained that large-cap coins were experiencing some sort of stagnation in the crypto markets.

Most large-cap cryptocurrencies delivered negative returns, while mid and small-cap cryptocurrencies such as LINK, ADA, BAT, VET, and IOST delivered positive returns. In particular, VET had a phenomenal month, delivering more than 40% return in June.

The impressive performance of VeChain in the month of June is also very much evident two weeks into the month of July. Taking a look at the daily VET/USDT chart courtesy of Tradingview.com, VeChain is clearly in a parabolic run at its current value of $0.0177.

From the daily VET/USDT chart, the following can be observed.

As with all analyses of altcoin such as VeChain (VET), the use of stop losses and low leverage is highly advised when trading VET on derivatives platforms such as Binance. Additionally, keeping an eye out for any sudden Bitcoin moves could be a good way of gauging the market environment for altcoins such as VeChain.

Edward Colston’s statue stood for 125 years. The Black Lives Matter statue that replaced it stood for about 25 hours – CNN

Written by Rob Picheta, CNNLondon

A statue of a Black Lives Matter protester in Bristol, England, secretly installed overnight on the plinth where a monument to a slave trader had previously stood, has been removed by the local authority.

"This morning we removed the sculpture. It will be held at our museum for the artist to collect or donate to our collection," Bristol City Council tweeted Thursday.

Jen Reid poses by the statue on Wednesday. Credit: Matthew Horwood/Getty Images

The city's mayor Marvin Rees had previously said that "the future of the plinth and what is installed on it must be decided by the people of Bristol."

"This will be critical to building a city that is home to those who are elated at the statue being pulled down, those who sympathize with its removal but are dismayed at how it happened and those who feel that in its removal, they've lost a piece of the Bristol they know and therefore themselves," he added in a statement on Wednesday.

Quinn's artwork depicted Reid with her fist raised in a Black Power salute, mimicking a picture from June 7 of her atop the empty plinth where the original Colston statue once stood.

After contacting Reid, the artist produced a life-sized sculpture of the moment using black resin. In a press statement released Wednesday, he said that the sculpture "is an embodiment and amplification of Jen's ideas and experiences, and of the past, present and her hope for a better future."

The work, officially titled "A Surge of Power (Jen Reid) 2020," was intended to be temporary. The artist confirmed that he did not receive permission from authorities to erect the statue. Should the artwork be sold, Quinn said that profits will be donated to two charities, chosen by Reid, that promote the inclusion of Black history in school curricula.

But the sculpture has caused a divide in the art world, with some suggesting that the intervention of a White, London-based artist is unhelpful to the wider Black Lives Matter movement.

British artist Thomas J Price, who has been commissioned to create a public artwork in London honoring the Windrush generation, wrote on Twitter that Quinn had created a "Votive statue to appropriation."

But author Bernardine Evaristo commended the work and suggested it be erected again elsewhere. "Now it has to find a public spot. If Bristol doesn't have the guts, I nominate Brixton," she said on Twitter.

The actions of the protesters sparked a national conversation in the UK about what should be done with statues, monuments and street names dedicated to slave traders and imperialists around the country.

The original Colston monument, which was fished out of a river by authorities after being dumped there by protesters, will be placed in a museum alongside placards from the protest.

Removing the statue of Black Lives Matter activist Jen Reid was a mistake – The Guardian

Your report (The day Bristol woke up to a new statue, 15 July) and feature (G2, 15 July) on the Bristol statue of Jen Reid created by the artist Marc Quinn were marred by the comments of Thomas J Price in a different article (Allyship or stunt? Marc Quinns BLM statue divides art world, 15 July). He claims that Quinn has created the votive statue to appropriation and it should have been a black artists output, not that of a white cis man. This is reactionary politics disguised in obscure, trendy jargon.

The core values of all progressive movements are liberty, equality and solidarity. Millions of us didnt need to be black South Africans to oppose apartheid. Similarly, we dont need to be black Americans to oppose the endless police brutality meted out to them.

Our empathy lies with the exploited and oppressed. Price offers the worst kind of identity politics, where solidarity is impossible because only direct personal experience counts. That would be a disastrous dead end for Black Lives Matter and for all other social movements, while making broader alliances on social justice all but impossible. At a moment when the hard right is busy and active stirring up social divisions and cultural wars, progressives need to oppose those who unwittingly help them.Jon BloomfieldBirmingham

I went to see the statue of Jen Reid and was horrified, when I got there, to realise I was six hours too late. People kept arriving hoping to see the statue too, but only a void now occupies that plinth.

Marvin Rees, the Labour mayor of Bristol, may believe that the statues removal has squashed the issue. But removing it has highlighted a key issue of the Black Lives Matter campaign. It suggests that black people are invisible, an underclass who do not have recognition. That racism is unheard.

A savvy mayor would have left Quinns statue there until Bristol city council had decided what could go in its place. There should have been a recognition of the pain and hurt rather than some petty excuse that the artist was not Bristolian. Here in Bristol we know how long it takes for the council to make decisions about controversial statues Colstons statue was erected 60 years after abolition, was up for more than 100, and despite 30 years campaigning was only removed through passionate opposition to injustice. If treated the same, the Jen Reid statue would have stood for decades. The empty plinth says more than if the statue had remained. It says we cannot upset the racists. It says black lives are invisible.Lyn HowardBristol

I find the swift removal of the Jen Reid statue by Bristol city council regrettable, but it will not be forgotten, and serves to remind us that temporary works of art can be just as memorable as permanent ones. For example, Rachel Whitereads House or the wonderful installations by Christo and Jeanne-Claude. The latter took years to come to fruition due to planning permits, financing etc, but the swift creation and erection of Quinns statue suggests that a series of temporary works could be commissioned, as on the fourth plinth in Trafalgar Square, with a variety of artists (black, white, male, female, LGBTQ+) and subjects (local activists, historical figures, abstract symbols) chosen and voted for by local residents.

This should satisfy the Bristol mayors insistence on democratic process, create opportunities for a range of artists, and lead to genuine public involvement and engagement with quickly achieved results. Clive Sykes London
