A repurposed drug, Itolizumab, is one of the newest treatments for Covid-19 approved in India. The Drug Controller General of India recently approved it as a novel biologic therapy for restricted emergency use. The decision has also sparked controversy because of the small size of the clinical trials, and because exemption has been granted from phase-III trials.

What is this drug?

Itolizumab is an existing drug used for psoriasis, a chronic skin disease involving unregulated growth of some skin cells that develop into red patches mostly on knees and elbows, but also on some other parts of the body. The drug, developed by Bengaluru-based Biocon, was approved in 2013. It is considered safe and effective for the treatment of psoriasis.

Why was it approved for emergency use in Covid treatment?

The SARS-CoV-2 virus has been observed to induce an overreaction of the immune system, generating a large number of cytokines that can cause severe damage to the lungs and other organs, and, in the worst scenario, multi-organ failure and even death.

The approval from the DCGI is based on the results from the conclusion of a randomised, controlled clinical trial at hospitals in Mumbai and New Delhi. The study focused on the safety and efficacy of Itolizumab in preventing cardio-renal complications in Covid-19 patients who also have acute respiratory distress. The drug has been found to reduce these complications in such patients.

Basically, the drug controls the hyper-activation of the immune system in response to SARS-CoV-2 virus and prevents morbidity and mortality related to the cytokine storm. The clinical trial showed that the drug is best administered in the pulmonary phase of the Covid-19 infection when the cytokine build up is starting and the patient is experiencing shortness of breath and exhibiting abnormal chest images. It prevents progression to the hyperinflammation phase (cytokine storm) and other complications like coagulation and organ failure, according to Dr Sandeep Athalye, Chief Medical Officer, Biocon Biologics.

The drug has been used over 80 patients in Cuba and off-label in over 150 cases. According to Dr Shashank Joshi, Dean, Indian College of Physicians, the most critical part is to know when to use the drug and it must be reserved for moderate to severe Covid cases with cytokine storm where oxygen requirements are rapidly going up. usually between the 8th day onwards of Covid infection.

What were the results of the trial?

The trial results showed a statistically significant advantage over the control group of patients, in one-month mortality rate. All the patients who were administered Itolizumab were weaned off oxygen by Day 30, and none needed ventilator support unlike the control group that did not get the drug. Some other inflammations commonly found in such patients were also suppressed, and these correlated well with clinical improvement in symptoms. Overall, the drug was found well-tolerated.

How large was the trial?

The trial had 20 participants given the drug along with supportive care and 10 others given only supportive care. All 20 patients on Itolizumab recovered while three of the other 10 patients died.

Public health experts and some doctors have used social media to question the sample size of the trial. When journalists raised this question at a virtual press conference, Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, Executive Chairperson, Biocon, said Itolizumab has been approved in India and since the country is in a medical emergency, it was decided to go ahead with a clinical trial involving a cohort of 30 patients. She said the regulatory process was extremely robust and the scientific discussions on the trial was of a very high order.

The DCGI has also exempted the drug from phase III clinical trials and allowed phase IV trials (post-marketing surveillance). Itolizumab is not a new drug and was approved in India since 2013. We had done phase II and III trials, and got the approval. In the past seven years, its been used in psoriasis and we know how the mechanism works Biocon Biologics CMO Dr Athalye said. Company officials said they plan phase IV trials soon.

How much does it cost?

Each injection is presented as a 25mg/5ml solution, which costs Rs 7,950 per vial. Based on an average body weight of 60 kg, the therapy cost of a single dose comprising four vials is estimated at Rs 32,000 (MRP).

Trinity Site is a National Historic Landmark just 96 miles northeast of Las Cruces. At 5:30 a.m. Mountain War Time, the worlds first atomic bomb was detonated there on Monday, July 16, 1945. The explosion was equal to 44 million pounds of TNT and thrust us into the Nuclear Age in the blink of an eye.

Trinity is on the north end of White Sands Missile Range which normally opens the site to the public twice a year, the first Saturdays of April and October. I worked my first Trinity open house in 1977 and have been continuously associated with it for 43 years. I have coordinated the open houses, conducted many VIP tours, designed the signs at the site and currently act as a subject matter expect now that Im retired from the missile range. Some people think Ive been to Trinity Site more than any other human being.

In talking to visitors, I hear many myths and legends some are true and some are not. For instance, the military police providing security did indeed play polo at base camp.

First Lieutenant Howard Bush was the head of security at the site. His police unit patrolled Los Alamos on horseback before being assigned to Trinity. When they moved south in December 1944, they took their horses, assuming they would patrol with them.

The horses turned out to be totally impractical given the distances the men needed to cover each day. A jeep or truck was much more useful.

Bush, always interested in providing recreational opportunities for his men, managed to get polo equipment shipped to New Mexico. They had horses so polo made some sort of sense. However, none of them had ever played and the soft, sandy ground was no good for the standard wooden balls and mallets. But, being clever folks, the men improvised. They substituted brooms for the mallets and used a volleyball in place of the three-inch regulation ball.

In 2000, Polo: Players Edition Magazine got wind of the story and requested information from the missile range. The March 2001 issue came out with a full-page story about the players. The only problem was the lead sentence that said, About 40 miles outside of San Antonio, Texas, the U.S. Army had a top secret site It was another fine example of One of our 50 is missing.

For the test, Bush, as head of security was at the South 10,000-yard bunker where the bomb was triggered the control bunker. This is where Dr. Robert Oppenheimer watched from. Bush elected to be outside the bunker for the test. In his report, he said he was looking away from Ground Zero and was crouched down with his arms over his head. Like many others, he reported the incredible intense white light during the first moments of the explosion. Depending on cloud conditions, the skies over southern New Mexico were lit up for over a hundred miles. Bush said the light was so bright, he touched his eyelids with his finger to make sure his eyes were closed.

On the other hand, some stories are so absurd they never gain any traction. A few years ago a seller on eBay was peddling a nice old color postcard of the dunes at White Sands National Monument. In the description, the seller claimed the sand was bleached white by the explosion at Trinity Site. Since the park existed before 1945, that one made no sense at all.

Sometimes, even knowledgeable people accept a story with a nod of the head because it appeals to their common sense. For decades everyone, including the folks at Los Alamos, offered the explanation that the glass on the Trinity Site crater, dubbed Trinitite, was formed by the explosions fireball bouncing off the ground and melting the surface. When you hear that temperatures in the fireball reached thousands of degrees Fahrenheit, it seems like a reasonable explanation. In the missile range Public Affairs Office, we called it the crme brulee effect.

In 2003, Los Alamos scientists Robb Hermes and Bill Strickfaden nuked that myth. As part of their Trinitite analysis they determined the fireball was not in the vicinity of the crater surface long enough to create glass approaching a half-inch thick.

The two decided they needed a different mechanism to account for the glass on the ground. It didnt take long for them to see that the 100-foot steel tower and a great deal of sand on the crater floor were sucked up into the fireball that was a 14,000-degree blast furnace. In such conditions, the material would have turned to a gas, soon to condense back to a liquid form.

In other words, the fireball was filled with a mist of liquid steel and rock, all mixing together. The rest of the story is just raindrop physics. As droplets bumped into each other in the cloud, they got bigger and heavier. Just like rain, this liquid dropped to the ground to form pools of melted glass that grew and intermingled. However, some of the tiny drops hardened enough to keep their shape when they hit the ground which explains the spheres found on site. The theory nicely explains how glass ended up on fence posts and rocks.

Hermes and Strickfaden published an article about their findings in the Fall 2005 issue of Nuclear Weapons Journal. As part of the their work, the researchers confirmed the green color of Trinitite is from iron, both from the steel tower and the sand. Also, pieces of rare red Trinitite were examined at Los Alamos and the red color is from copper, probably the large coaxial cables coming off the north side of the 100-foot tower.

One myth has disappeared simply because of the changes in technology. Before digital cameras, we used to sometimes hear from visitors fearing the residual radiation at Trinity Site would fog the film in their cameras. We proved that was false by putting a roll of film next to a bag of Trinitite for a day and then developing the film. There was no effect.

It is true that Ground Zero is still radioactive. The level is very low, only about 10 times higher than the background levels in Las Cruces. In fact, it is roughly the same per hour as a flight in a jet airliner at 35,000 feet. The bottom line is that a visit during one of the open houses exposes a visitor to less radiation than a flight from Albuquerque to New York City.

After the Trinity test, all efforts shifted to the Pacific and preparing bombs to use against Japan. On Aug. 6, a uranium-fueled bomb was dropped on Hiroshima and on Aug. 9, another plutonium-fueled bomb, identical to the Trinity bomb, was exploded over Nagasaki. The war suddenly ended when Japan announced its surrender on Aug. 15, just under a month after the Trinity Site test.

I read with amusement, my old college textbook author and esteemed old-school economist, Robert J. Samuelsons column (July 12) "The FOMO stock market."

His apparent search to answer the why of the big gap between the stock markets perplexing ascension and the economys uncertain future during the pandemic seems to have missed the obvious: The stock market is rigged. PE ratios, conflicting unemployment indices, Shiller analytics, nor the psychological FOMO syndrome answer his perfunctory query. Because deep down, Prof. Samuelson knows the answer: The jig is up.

Wall Street and its marginal players fear not the perilous and prolonged economic rough patch staring us all in the face, because they know that both the U.S. Treasury and the Federal Reserve have removed any risk from their investment gambles. With interest rates at zero for as far as the eye can see, PPP grants, trillions in loans and the adding of billions of junk-like corporate bonds to the Feds burgeoning balance sheet, capitalisms referee (the U.S. government) has all but rigged the dice, put its big thumb on the scales and fundamentally socialized all their potential losses. Market exuberance indeed!

The Polish woman in the Ottoman court: the amazing story of the Pole who married the sultan – The First News

Married to Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent, a 16th-century ruler of the Ottoman Empire, Hurram Sultan, also known as Roxelana, was one of the most powerful women in the world. But before she rose to prominence from the sultans harem she was born as Aleksandra Lisowska in Poland, far from Ottoman lands.

Lisowska was born in 1505 in the town of Rohatyn, near Lviv, then a part of the Polish Kingdom. Her father was most probably a Ruthenian Orthodox priest. Little Aleksandra was captured during a Tatar ride and sold to the Ottoman Empire.

Known for her beauty, the Slavic girl received a new name, Hurrem, the cheerful one, converted to Islam, and entered the imperial harem as a slave before the year 1520 and Suleimans ascension to the throne.

The smart, charming, and alluring woman quickly rose through the ranks she gained her freedom and in 1531 officially married the sultan. A rulers marriage to a former slave was something unheard of at the time, and Lisowska went on to have six of his children, including his successor Selim II.

Hurrem converted to Islam, and entered the imperial harem as a slave before the year 1520 and Suleimans ascension to the throne.Public domain

She also used her love to exert influence over matters of state. As the sultans advisor and confidante, she was the first to receive the title Haseki Sultan the chief consort. Hurrem also managed to ensure that it was her son, and not one from the other wives or concubines, who inherited the throne.

Another break from tradition was allowing Hurrem to stay at court with her husband for the rest of her life. Previous wives of the sultans would be sent away with imperial heirs to some remote locations unless they were chosen to succeed the throne.

The powerful Hurrem Sultan took an active role in internal politics and international relations, not just connected to the fate of her children. Often described as manipulative and power-hungry (she was accused of bewitching Suleiman), Hurrem was also involved in several charity initiatives.

Among Hurrems legacy is the still functional bathhouse Haseki Hurrem Sultan Hamam. Constructed by Mimar Sinan at her request on the site of the ancient public baths Zeuxippus, it served worshippers in their traditional ablutions. It is worth noting, that a religious structure commissioned by a woman was a rarity.

Hurrem didnt stop there, she was also responsible for the construction of a mosque, two Koranic schools, and the Haseki Sultan Complex, which contained a temple, a school, a soup kitchen for the poor and a hospital.

Another object proving her importance is a letter dating back to 1549. Roxelana wrote to Polish King Sigismund II Augustus, in which she offers her condolences to Sigismund on the death of his father Sigismund I the Old.

Roxelana did not live to see her greatest ambition, the ascension of her son to the throne, become reality. She died on April 15th, 1558 eight years before her husbands death, and her son Selim becoming the ruler of the Ottoman Empire. She was buried in a mausoleum in the courtyard of the Sleymaniye Mosque.

But her legacy and her fame live on. She became known to a worldwide audience via the popular by the Turkish TV series The Magnificent Century, which was seen by over 200 million viewers in 56 countries.

Milton teen hospitalized with COVID-19 is now walking, talking and out of ICU – Crestview News Bulletin

Halene O'Connell, the 16-year-old Milton girl with COVID-19 who was clinging to life on a ventilatorjust eight daysago, has been moved out of the Intensive Care Unit and her family is "cautiously optimistic" she could soon fully recover.

Halenewas moved from the ICU to a regular hospital bed Wednesday evening after her condition improved steadily over the past week, according to her aunt, Carmen Barlianto. She had been in the ICU for a total of 18 days and on a ventilator and in a coma for 12 of those days.

Yesterday they moved her out of the ICU, which is a huge step, Barlianto told the Pensacola News Journal in a phone interview Thursday. They did a little parade, and it was very emotional for her and my sister (Halenes mother, Carrie OConnell).

She cried a lot moving to the other floor, because shes just beginning to realize all the help that its taken and the dedication from the medical staff for her fight, Barlianto said. It was a very emotional day yesterday for the whole staff, they were all crying.

Halene first began experiencing a fever and nausea on June 22, but doctors initially sent her home without testing her for coronavirus, thinking it was just a bug. However, by June 28, she couldn't even breathe while walking to the bathroom and was rushed to the children's hospital in Pensacola.

Halene's condition was "up and down" every day, according to her aunt. However, she was finally removed from her ventilator July 9and has slowly been coming out of her coma ever since. Barlianto said the teenager has startedto do things like sit up and stand for a few minutes at a timeand can walk about 10 steps before becoming too tired and weak.

She still can't text or use her cellphone, which is "hard for a 16-year-old girl," Barlianto joked.

Mentally, she's also beginning to realize what happened to her, and how close she came to not surviving.

Shes awake and coherent, but she sleeps a lot because she gets tired so quickly, Barlianto said. Shes focused on her physical therapy. Its a process. They just shared with her that she was on such a high setting on the ventilator that they were really concerned she wasnt going to make it, even with her being so young.

Doctors are also continuing to evaluate what the long-term effects of the coronavirus will be on Halene, which could take some time. For now, Halene and her mom, Carrie, who has been quarantined in the hospital with her daughter since day one, are taking things day by day and hoping toreturn home soon.

Halene's father, Robert, and sister, Hailey, haven't seen the teensince she was admitted to the hospital due to visitation restrictions.

Barlianto said the O'Connell family is floored by the outpouring of supportfrom the community and hopes Halene's story can reach all corners of the earth so people can realize what happened to her can happen to them, too. They are still reiterating their pleas for people to wear masks, social distance and wash their hands frequency.

Her story has traveled the world, and we love it. It helps us get through this, Barlianto said. Also, wear your mask. This isnt political. A lot of people maybe have gotten COVID and their symptoms arent as severe, but why even risk it because you just dont know until it hits you, and then its too late. Mask up, its not a big deal.

Take the strange, scary case of the Bellinger River snapping turtle (Myuchelys georgesi). A few years ago, an estimated 4,500 of these colorful critters swam the waters of the Australian water system for which they were named, a 44-mile river in the state of New South Wales, about six hours north of Sydney. They were probably never a populous species, and they faced a few problems from egg-eating predators, but otherwise these turtles hung on just fine.

Then disaster struck.

In 2015 canoeist Rowan Simon and a friend were paddling down the Bellinger River when they noticed a turtle sitting on a rock. It should have jumped back into the water as they approached. It didn't. They got closer and found a shocking sight its eyes "were grown over with this disease," as Simon recounted to the Sydney Morning Herald last year. They found another sick turtle 20 minutes later.

That was the first sign of a disease that, in under two months, would wipe out more than 90% of the species. In addition to blindness, the virus reportedly caused inflammatory lesions and internal organ failure.

Today as few as 150 Bellinger River snapping turtles remain, making them one of the world's 25 rarest turtle or tortoise species. Australia has declared them critically endangered and devoted hundreds of thousands of dollars toward the species' conservation.

Virus-plus?

The researchers also examined several hypotheses about how a previously unknown and still unidentified virus could have killed so many turtles so quickly.

They didn't find much.

"It's all a bit of a mystery," Chessman says. "There's still so much we don't know. We know it's a reptile type of virus, but we have no idea where it came from, how long it's been in the Bellinger River, or how it managed to apparently spread upstream rather than downstream at a rate of up to a kilometer a day, which is really quite bizarre."

Previous research had suggested that some additional contributing factor perhaps abnormal water temperatures, pollution or malnutrition may have magnified the effects of the virus so that it caused so many fatalities. Current research, however, has found no specific evidence to support those hypotheses at least, not yet.

"We can't rule out that some sort of unusual environmental conditions in the preceding months were related to it somehow, but we don't really have the information to understand what that was or what it may have been," says Chessman. "Unfortunately, there isn't that much information about what happened in the river until these sick and dead turtles started showing up in February 2015."

The Last Chance Leads to the Next Generation

After his first warnings reportedly fell on deaf ears, Rowan Simon and another friend returned to the river, where they gathered up 50 dead and dying turtles and presented them to the local council.

The collection process "was pretty horrific," Rowan told the Sydney Morning Herald.

That confrontation finally motivated action. But by then just two months after the first signs of the disease very few turtles were left.

At the last minute, conservation teams rescued 17 healthy mature and immature Bellinger River snapping turtles from an upper stretch of the river the disease hadn't yet reached. They soon became the core of a captive-breeding population at Sydney's Taronga Zoo. Another 19 immature turtles (also healthy) were collected in November 2016 and sent to Symbio Wildlife Park to start a second captive-assurance population.

So far the released turtles appear to be healthy, and their survival rate remains quite high. As of this past March, 17 of the released turtles were still being tracked; one turtle had died, while two more had disappeared after their tracking devices failed. That month 16 of the released hatchlings were collected, tested and rereleased. Gerry McGilvray, co-lead of the Bellinger River turtle conservation program for the NSW government, told The Guardian that the youngsters "appear to be in good health and there's no evidence of exposure to the virus."

That makes the Bellinger River snapping turtle an interesting parallel to the current COVID-19 pandemic: The virus seems to have caused greater mortality levels in adults than in immature turtles, for as-yet-unknown reasons.

"The older ones seemed more susceptible than the younger ones, which of course is true with coronavirus as well," says Chessman.

A Long Road Ahead

Of course, you need to produce a huge number of hatchlings to make up for losing 90% of a species. That will take time a lot of it and the effort faces some very strict physical limitations.

For one thing, very few mature females remain just 5% of the total wild population. On top of that, 88% of the remaining turtles are immature, meaning they won't reach breeding age for several years another 10-12 years in the case of the released hatchlings.

Extinction Inspiration

Although we don't know much about the river basin's water quality before the turtles got sick, we know a lot more about it now because this near-extinction has motivated the community.

Soon after news of the virus and mass turtle deaths emerged, a group of citizens banded together to form Bellingen Riverwatch (named after the nearby town with a slightly different name than the river itself). Now community volunteers, schools and other organizations conduct monthly water-quality tests across three rivers, a process that's continued even amid the pandemic.

The results have been mostly good, with a few concerns. Elevated phosphate levels have shown up several times. Tests for February and March found that several sites that, at certain moments, failed to meet guidelines for dissolved oxygen established by the Australian and New Zealand Environment and Conservation Council, indicating unsafe conditions for "aquatic life and the macroinvertebrates that our turtles love to eat." The water's oxygen content is potentially important for the Bellinger River turtle, a butt-breathing species that takes in some oxygen through its cloaca while it's underwater. If a turtle can't get enough oxygen from the water, it must come to the surface, putting it at increased risk of predation. Although concerning, there's no indication this is currently a threat to the species.

Swimming Forward

Although many questions remain, the Bellinger River snapping turtle appears to have been saved from extinction for now.

Of course, the threat of another potential outbreak still looms large as it does for other wildlife species and even people around the world.

"Situations like this are of course unpredictable and could in theory happen anytime and anywhere kind of like COVID," says biologist Craig Stanford, the lead author of a new study about the threats faced by the world's turtle and tortoise species. What's happening with the Bellinger River turtle, he says, "concerns all of us, but it's hard to take lessons from it to prevent something like this from happening in the future."

But there's one lesson from the Bellinger River that we can all carry forward: If you see a turtle or other animal that's displaying signs of illness or unusual behavior, raise the alarm. It could be the start of something catastrophic and an opportunity to bring a coalition and a community together to fight for a good cause and make a difference.

The sixth edition of ETF Streams webinar series, ETF Ecosystem Unwrapped, explored one of the biggest trends in finance, environmental, social and governance (ESG) investing.

The conversation began with Ashley Fagan, global head of ETF, indexing and smart beta strategic clients & UK/Ireland development for Amundi, highlighting the three key drivers for the increase in ESG investing. This included investor awareness such that investors and stakeholders are demanding greater transparency over where the money is being invested, and as a result, they are opting for more sustainable strategies.

Second, regulators are providing more guidance, according to Fagan. Since October 2019, UK pension funds have an explicit responsibility to integrate ESG issues into their investment approach.

Finally, the performance of ESG factors can positively impact the risk and return for investors. Fagan highlighted the SRI, ESG leaders and ESG universal versions of the MSCI All Country World index have all outperformed the parent index over the year-to-date, three- and five-year periods.

Damien Lardoux, head of impact investing at EQ Investors, added ESG strategies will simply become common sense investing.

You want to avoid investing in a poorly governed company as you can see some examples, such as BP and Volkswagen where their share prices can fall by 20% in a single day when the scandalous news becomes public, Lardoux said.

One of the benefits of using index funds when investing in ESG strategies is the 100% transparency of the holdings, Alan Miller, founding partner and chief investment officer at SCM Direct, explained.

He said there is a large element of trust when typically investing with mutual funds because you can only see the top 10 holdings which typically account for just 45% of the portfolio.

Everybodys view on what is an ESG stock and what is not is different between investors and between ESG data providers with often conflicting ESG methodologies, Miller added. I am not saying one is better than the other, but they can definitely be significantly different.

It is suggested that investors are broadly happy with these strategies, however, as ESG ETFs saw net positive flows in March just as the global markets were impacted by the coronavirus outbreak.

ESG ETFs have shown a real resilience during the coronavirus crisis as it was the only category within equities that maintained positive flows, Fagan said.

She highlighted some of the reasons behind the resilience including the defensiveness of ESG strategies as they overweight sectors such as healthcare and technology, which have performed well, and underweight sectors that have underperformed during the crisis, like energy and transport.

Furthermore, there is a possibility that investors are showing greater loyalty to their ESG investments which make them less sensitive to market declines.

One issue regarding the ESG ETF market in Europe is that there are too few products available, according to Lardoux.

He said: The issue we have seen with the product providers is that they have been focusing on reducing fees rather than product innovation.

Areas that Miller would like to see more products available include factor tilted ESG products such as value and growth as well as currency hedged and fixed income ESG ETFs.

He continued by explaining the importance of being transparent when constructing an ESG portfolio for investors.

AI Fueling The Oil And Gas Industry: Interview With Tim Custer At Apache – Forbes

In industries where data is key to gaining competitive advantage, artificial intelligence and machine learning have become necessities. After taking the role of land manager for the past ten years, Custer has shared how tied to real estate and traditional non-energy businesses the oil and gas sector is, and the role that machine learning and AI is playing to greatly change the way that the energy industry deals with documents.

According to Custer, AI and machine learning are extracting valuable data from unstructured data. The oil and gas industry is particularly dependent on an intricate set of processes and document-centric needs for land leases. Gas

leases are vital to the energy industry as they determine legal rights and claims to an oil or gas deposit while regulating the trade and extraction of those resources. At Apache, Custer notes they have around 60,000 paper and document-centric leases which can vary in length from just two pages to over fifty. Moreover, there are provisions contained on each page that must be located and interpreted every time an inquiry is made on a lease. This task can prove quite laborious with the added task of finding the correct hardcopy lease to begin with.

The first step to wrangling control of these leases is to digitize the documents so that machines can understand them. Apache has succeeded in digitizing the majority of their gas leases using Optical Character Recognition (OCR) and natural language processing (NLP). They are capable of searching through these documents for not only the required lease but the provision within it in a matter of seconds. This not only speeds up searching processes at Apache but is also time-saving for teams in need of specific provisions for their projects. Custer continues by describing the optimization of the process as grouping provisions with like wording across vast amounts of data. These digitization and NLP systems ensure higher data integrity by increasing accuracy and removing human interpretation.

One curious particularity of these leases is that they are often old, with the documents done in handwriting, usually in dated calligraphic and handwritten styles. Some of the later documents were hand type-written. As such there is a lot of variability of legibility, fonts, spacing, and overall document quality. Apache has applied machine learning to complete data organizing and searching processes more effectively and quickly than otherwise would be possible with humans having to read and process each document. Custer notes that there are a variety of document insights that must be considered such as letters, correspondence, or internal memos that are attached to the gas lease itself. The AI-enabled systems allow for significantly improved organization of this additional information due to its ability to classify and categorize the documents. In addition to higher efficiency and effectiveness, using a digitization and ML-based approach here also eliminates the need to store documents on-hand in file cabinets. Instead, these documents, once scanned, can be moved to long-term archival storage for use only when necessary as backup.

The energy is heavily regulated and that this can pose a challenge when attempting technology implementation. Custer however sees AI realistically being applied to the energy industry to many unique use-cases that he envisions for the future. In particular, Custer notes the relative inefficiency of logistics and management of the energy industry. He notes that technological advancements have already been made within the industry and give examples such as seismic imaging that can scan for underground reservoirs and drills that can drill both vertically and horizontally into the ground. Custer recognizes these applications as huge technology advancements within the industry. However, Custer notes that there has been minimal advancement in his domain of land management and business development over the years, referring to how people were apprehensive to begin with but have slowly warmed up to the idea of AI within the energy industry. He adds that this acceptance is particularly prominent when provisions and leases are involved due to its time-saving and file organizing abilities. Apache as well as other energy firms are increasingly welcoming the continual technological advancements enjoying the cost and time-saving benefits.

Custer also elaborates on the time-saving aspect of these AI systems, in particular when applied to a provision known as the consent to assign. This provision is involved within a contractual obligation that decides whether ownership can be transferred or not. Custer notes that a consent to assign provision can take hours to review manually while AI-enabled systems can shorten the process to a matter of minutes.

In general, Custer believes that this is just the tip of the iceberg with regards to the ways that AI can dramatically impact the energy industry. He states that there are many possible advancements to be made in the industry that can be learned from other industries such as finance, healthcare, and manufacturing, looking at similar use cases where documents, processes, and data can be effectively leveraged and optimized. Custer notes just how much more efficient data analysis will become and that our ability to extract valuable information from data will only be improved as time goes on.

However, expectations must be realistic. A recent Economist report, entitled An understanding of AIs limitations is starting to sink in, warned that despite major advances in the field, the fact remains that many of the grandest claims made about AI have once again failed to become reality and that the state of AI hype has far exceeded the state of AI science especially in regard to the actual implementation of the technology on the ground.
