UChicago scientists reflect on need to address racism, inequality – UChicago News

When physicist Brian Nord joined the Dark Energy Survey in 2012, a state-of-the-art project to map the night sky, he wasas far as he knewthe only Black American man in the multi-institution collaboration of more than 400 scientists. Today, he still is.

When I was a child, I wanted to grow up to share the beauty and gifts of a scientific understanding of the universe with the world, Nord wrote in an open letter to global colleagues. Ive had the privilege to find and create knowledge for my fellow humans. Im one of the lucky ones. How many have shared my dream, but never got this close, because of the science communitys complicity through inaction?

An associate scientist at Fermilab and University of Chicago visiting research assistant professor, Nord is a member of Particles for Justicean international movement of scientists that works to counter social injustice in science. He and astrophysicist Chanda Prescod-Weinstein of the University of New Hampshire co-led a call for a day of action June 10 in which non-Black scientists would plan how to better support their Black colleagues and address the racial injustices in society, academia and in science.

Thousands of scientists around the world participated. Large scientific collaborations like LIGO, the Rubin Observatory Legacy Survey of Space and Time and the Dark Energy Survey cancelled their meetings; the journals Science and Nature,as well as the popular site arxiv.org, paused their publishing. Instead, scientistsincluding many in the physical sciences at UChicagoread, reflected, donated and met on how to move forward.

Our Black colleagues do not feel safe in our work environment. Thats not OK, said astrophysicist and graduate student Adina Feinstein, who is white. For academia as an institutiona space that prides itself on boundless creativity and innovationto be systemically racist is so backwards. But we are using the momentum of the current atmosphere to strongly push for these changes.

Feinstein and Thaddeus Komacek, a postdoctoral researcher in the Geophysical Sciences, lead a discussion in the Exoplanet Journal Club and came up with a list of immediate initiatives for the group. They, along with other scientists in the Inclusivity, Diversity, and Equity in Astronomy group, also pulled together a list of larger, concrete action items that the astronomy community could undertake to improve equity.

Chihway Chang, the Clare Booth Luce Assistant Professor of Astrophysics, also discussed action plans within the Survey Science group she led together with Asst. Prof. Alex Drlica-Wagner. Chang, who grew up in Taiwan, said the past few weeks of protest and discussion in the U.S. have been transformational for her.

In the beginning, I think I didnt really understand the full extent of the problem since I didnt grow up here and have less of the cultural background, she said. But inequality in academiathat is something I understand. As a woman in science, I think back on all the incidents in my academic career where I thought, Should I say something? and I stayed quiet because it felt like it wasnt going to change anything.

This feels different, she said. This feels like change is possible. And now that Im faculty, I especially have the responsibility to make changes, she said. You need to do that to show students its OK to speak up.

Nord agreed.

Sometimes people hear and respond empathetically, but its usually behind closed doors, he said. My colleagues are still realizing the need to publicly hold each other accountable when racist, misogynistic or homophobic things are said. You can still uphold the values of free speech and also hold people accountable for racist statements.

Sam McDermott, a Kavli Institute for Cosmological Physics associate fellow, also helped organize the day of action. He spoke on the need for white scientists like himself to educate each other and hold each other accountable.

No one likes to hear that theyre part of a racist establishment, he said. Its often met with defensiveness or evasiveness. Ive had some good, sincere conversations with people in power in the past few weeks; but itll be a really long time before we know how much they really meant it.

Theres really one metric for success, McDermott added: Do our institutions reflect the makeup of the country as a whole at every leveldirectorships, department chairs, collaboration heads, postdocs and students?

As for a plan, Nord said: Go find where Black people do physics. Hire them and retain them. Pay them competitively and for skills they have, like how to manage white supremacyBlack people have been doing a lot of work for the academy that we dont get paid or recognized for. Thats how you rebuild your institution in a way that is just and equitable.

Comet NEOWISE: How to See It in Night Skies – The New York Times

Eager sky watchers are turning to the heavens as Comet NEOWISE, one of the brightest comets in a generation, starts climbing ever higher among the evening stars.

A majority of comets fly through the solar system invisible to humans, usually too small and dim to be seen with the naked eye. The last frozen ice ball that gave us a big show was Hale-Bopp, a comet that was visible for nearly 18 months around its closest approach to Earth in 1997.

Officially designated C/2020 F3, Comet NEOWISE was discovered on March 27 and had until this week been visible only to committed comet viewers willing to wake up in the early pre-dawn hours. But on Monday, NEOWISE tipped into the post-sunset sky and has even been spotted by people living near city centers with all the light pollution.

Its the first time in 23 years that this is possible, said Federica Spoto, an astronomer at the Harvard & Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics. You can watch it from your backyard and you dont need a telescope.

To catch NEOWISE yourself, look up at the northwest skies about an hour and a half after sunset. Experts suggest going to the darkest area you can for best viewing. Find the Big Dipper and follow its ladle as it arcs in the direction of the horizon.

NEOWISE will appear under the Big Dipper about 10 degrees above the horizon and be about as bright as that constellations stars. If you hold out your arm, 10 degrees is roughly the part of the sky covered by your fist. Over the next few days, NEOWISE will move higher in the sky and be easier to spot, reaching its apex on July 23, when it makes its closest approach to Earth.

Good binoculars will allow you to see more of the comet and its spectacular dust tail. Lucky viewers might even catch the fainter blue ion tail, made from charged particles flying off the comets icy nucleus. NEOWISE is visible only to observers in the Northern Hemisphere and should remain bright enough to spot into mid-August.

For those looking to capture a souvenir of their experience, a digital camera placed on a tripod and set to a five- or 10-second exposure could do the trick, said Ernesto Guido, an amateur astronomer in Italy. Many cellphones allow users to change the settings on their cameras and achieve surprisingly good results. Try framing NEOWISE against a nice background such as a tree, Mr. Guido suggested.

Comet NEOWISE gets its name from NASAs Near-Earth Object Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (NEOWISE), a space-based infrared telescope dedicated to looking out for potentially hazardous asteroids and comets. Researchers who manage the observatory spotted the comet in March when it was headed in the direction of the sun.

Comet NEOWISE made its closest approach to our star on July 3, coming within the orbit of Mercury.

A smaller or weaker comet would have crumbled under the pressure, said Amy Mainzer, principal investigator of the NEOWISE mission.

Thats exactly what happened earlier this year to Comet SWAN, which was just barely visible to naked-eye viewers in the Southern Hemisphere, before fizzling as it rounded the sun. Another comet, ATLAS, disintegrated into more than two dozen pieces in April.

NEOWISE comes to us from the distant outer reaches of the solar system, having spent most of its life in a frigid field of icy bodies called the Oort cloud. When far from the sun, comets are inert and lack their beautiful dust tails, which can be 10 million miles long. The suns heat causes them to expel gas and dust, forming an atmospheric shell called a coma and then the pressure of solar radiation extends this structure out into a long tail.

Comets like NEOWISE are leftovers from our solar systems creation. Since they retain the building blocks of planets in their frozen ice, they can provide scientists with important information about our origins. Dr. Mainzer likened its approach to a mission that collects samples and returns them to Earth, except the sample comes to us.

NEOWISE wont make it back to the inner solar system for 6,800 years. So enjoy it while you can.

Things are really tough right now for lots of people, Dr. Mainzer said. But this is a chance to look up and reconnect with the big picture stuff.

LONG ISLAND Comet Neowise is zooming past the planet, and you'll be able to see it in the skies above Long Island for the next several days. To see the brightest comet in nearly a quarter of a century, all you need is a little patience.

Comet Neowise has been visible in the east-northeast sky with the naked eye about an hour before sunrise for the past month. The comet, which NASA says could become known as the "Great Comet of 2020," is going prime time, though, and this week it is visible in the evening sky.

It will appear in the northwestern sky about an hour after sunset, below the Big Dipper, according to NASA.

Though you'll be able to see it without a small telescope or binoculars, weather permitting, those instruments offer better views.

Sky & Telescope says Comet Neowise will appear just as the last of twilight fades into darkness. The Big Dipper hangs by its handle at this time, so look about three fists below the "bowl."

Comet Neowise will fade after July 19 as it comes closer to our planet. Its closest approach to Earth occurs on July 22, after which it will fade more rapidly and eventually disappear from our solar system.

The comet has brightened 100-fold since June 9 and is only getting better especially for those with an aversion to early mornings.

The comet appears to rise tail first, followed by its bright head or coma, which Space.com said shines "as bright as a first-magnitude star" a designation reserved for some the brightest of stars. For comparison purposes, Polaris, the North Star, is a second-magnitude star. Since magnitude is a logarithmic scale, the comet will appear to be about 2.5 times brighter than Polaris.

Comet Neowise appears low on the horizon, so early morning viewers will need to plan to get away from trees and buildings. It's also competing with a nearly full moon, which can make it hard to see.

Relatively new in the continuum of time, Comet Neowise hasn't made an appearance in our solar system for 6,800 years.

NASA says the comet is an inner-solar system "intruder" that could become known as the Great Comet of 2020. It's large by comet standards, measuring about 3 miles across.

The comet is the brightest to visit Earth since Comet Hale-Bopp made an appearance in 1997.

Ghostly Particles from the Sun Confirm Nuclear Fusion – Eos

Deep within the Sun, high temperatures and pressures drive the fusion of hydrogen into helium. Absent these nuclear reactions, Earth would be a cold and dark world devoid of life. Now, using an exquisitely sensitive detector located deep underground, researchers have made the first direct observation of a rare breed of ghostly particles known as solar neutrinos. This discovery confirms a long-hypothesized mechanism for how the Sunand other starsfuses hydrogen into helium.

Over 8 decades ago, physicists Hans Bethe and Carl Friedrich von Weizscker independently proposed that hydrogen fusion in the Sun might be catalyzed by carbon (C), nitrogen (N), and oxygen (O) nuclei. Researchers now understand that this so-called CNO cycle accounts for only a small fraction of the energy produced by the Sunroughly 1%but its a dominant mechanism in more massive stars. (Most of the Suns energy derives from a fusion process known as the pp chain.)

Both the pp chain and the CNO cycle produce neutrinos. These electrically neutral, nearly massless particles pervade space, yet theyre maddeningly tough to pin down because they interact so weakly with matter. Neutrinos are very difficult to detect, said Sarbani Basu, a solar and stellar astrophysicist at Yale University in New Haven, Conn., not involved in the research. They pass right through you. (Hold up a hand. Tens of billions of neutrinos just zipped through.)

Neutrinos are a hallmark of the Suns nuclear reactions, and theyre a fundamental way of studying processes that occur deep within our nearest star. But it wasnt until 2014 that researchers reported detecting neutrinos from the primary reaction of the pp chain. Now that same research group has pinpointed neutrinos from the CNO cycle.

The team used the Borexino particle detector located roughly 1,400 meters underground near Rome, Italy. (The detectors subterranean environment shields it mightilybut not completelyfrom a barrage of cosmic particles.) The heart of Borexino is a spherical tank roughly 4 meters in diameter filled with about 280 metric tons of a liquid hydrocarbon. This scintillator liquid emits light whenever a charged particle moves through it. If a neutrino happens to collide with an electron in the tank, the resulting burst of light is captured by photomultiplier tubes within the detector. Neutrinos from the CNO cycle can be distinguished on the basis of the kick they impart to electrons.

One long-standing challenge to detecting CNO cycle neutrinos has been background contamination. For example, the radioactive decay of bismuth-210, found in the nylon lining Borexinos innermost tank, releases charged particles that can trigger bursts of light, said Gioacchino Ranucci, an astroparticle physicist at the National Institute for Nuclear Physics in Milan, Italy, and a spokesman for the Borexino Collaboration. Even if its a small amount, it can mask the signal of the neutrinos.

To combat this contamination, the scientists carefully controlled Borexinos thermal environment. They clad the detector in a thick layer of insulation and installed a heater nearby. Those efforts minimized convective currents within the detectors liquid, important for preventing the dispersal of bismuth-210 and its daughter products. The research team also limited its analyses to signals originating from deep within Borexinos innermost tank, far from the detectors nylon lining.

This discovery is another milestone in solar neutrino physics.Last month, at the XXIX International Conference on Neutrino Physics and Astrophysics, the Borexino Collaboration reported a confident detection of CNO cycle neutrinos based on 3.5 years of data. Borexino spotted about seven of these elusive particles each day, the team estimated.

These results are exciting, said Yales Basu, but the error bars on the detection are still large. Those will get smaller as more data are collected, so its important to keep the experiment going, she said. Keep observing, keep observing.

Spectacular sight: 5 planets together appeared in Karachi at midnight – The News International

KARACHI: Five planets of the solar system witnessed together at 12 on Sunday night in the Pakistan sky, a top planetary scientist announced.

The five planets that were viewed simultaneously including Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn, according to Prof Dr Muhammad Jawed Iqbal, the director at the Institute of Space and Planetary Astrophysics (ISPA) a research facility at the University of Karachi.

"Five planets were visible together at midnight and all five could be seen without binoculars," Dr Iqbal said. "Usually, two to three planets are visible in the night sky.

The scientist noted that the coming together of the planets would be available for viewing for the next few nights. However, it would be difficult to see the interesting activity in the sky due to Karachis current cloudy weather.

It is interesting to note that at the same time, Mercury was in retrograde (apparent motion of moving backwards) for the second time this year, from June 18 to July 12, 2020, according to Forbes. Furthermore, the ringed Saturn would be brightest at night on July 20, the publication added, as it would reach opposition.

COVID-19 in Fall 2020: A Concerning Situation for Students – Astrobites

The following is based on a collection of graduate student experiences, focusing on the perspectives of students at U.S. institutions. Information on university reopening plans and COVID-19 is up-to-date as of early July 2020, but may have changed due to the quickly evolving nature of this pandemic. For medical information on COVID-19, please refer to the CDC and WHO.

A few months ago, the novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 leapt to the forefront of our national consciousness. COVID-19, the highly infectious disease caused by this new coronavirus, began to spread in communities in the United States and across the globe. In response, entire countries shut down, advising citizens to stay in their homes to slow transmission and flatten the curve to avoid overwhelming healthcare systems. Universities scrambled to make changes, with many institutions transitioning to online learning in a matter of days or weeks. Many students were told to leave campuses, finishing out the school year in their family homes.

Now, as we approach the fall term, universities are planning for what comes next. Some states have reopened their businesses and relaxed stay-at-home orders, leading to increased cases of COVID-19 across the country. Universities are considering how they, too, will reopen, and if/how they will safely bring students back on campus for Fall 2020. As graduate students we are deeply concerned with how universities will operate and how we (as students, researchers, and teaching assistants) will be impacted by COVID-19 this fall. In todays Beyond bite, we will explore the variety of current university reopening plans and graduate student concerns surrounding those plans.

Before we jump into how universities are tackling this issue of reopening, its important to understand the current situation in the U.S. Although some countries like New Zealand have effectively halted the spread of COVID-19, the United States has seen cases rise dramatically (see Figure 1), currently holding the highest case counts in the world with over 3 million confirmed cases according to the WHO. (For context, as of 6/30/2020, the U.S. had 4% of the worlds population and 25% of its COVID-19 cases.) The fatality rate of COVID-19 is around 0.6-1% overall according to current studies, and the hospitalization rate is ~10-11%. The data have shown that people 65 and older, as well as people of color (particularly Native American, Black, and Latinx communities), are at higher risk for COVID-19.

Even in cases where the patient survives and recovers, they have been left with life-changing effects, such as decreased lung capacity, strokes, and more. To make matters worse, cases that dont show serious symptoms can still be left with long-term lung damage. Over 100,000 Americans have already died from this pandemic, and infection rates are spiking in many states. There is a lack of contact tracing, widespread testing, and other efforts that countries have used to control the spread. Current scientific consensus shows that the virus is transmitted by respiratory droplets, even by asymptomatic folks, and also possibly through the air. As a result, gatherings indoors are more risky due to a lack of space for distancing and less air flow. While mask wearing and washing your hands is useful (but not foolproof) in reducing the spread, isolation is the most surefire way to avoid infection. Maintaining distancing, implementing contact tracing and testing, and enforcing these safety protocols seems challenging in a university setting, where students often gather in groups to study and socialize. With these facts in mind, how are universities going to serve tens of thousands of students in the fall and keep everyone safe?

The United States has so far lacked cohesive national guidance during this pandemic, leaving decisions for reopening plans and public health guidance to the state (and even city) levels of government. For many people, there has been a large amount of uncertainty about what activities are allowed by their local rules, and, beyond that, what is actually safe. So far, it seems like universities are adding to this patchwork quilt of reopening plans, with a huge variance in what individual institutions are planning to do this fall (see Figure 2 for a summary). Most plans seem to offer some sort of hybrid in-person and virtual instruction, although the details of these plans vary wildly. Additionally, these plans were recently thrown into disarray by the ICE decision regarding international students, which has thankfully now been rescinded.

Many universities have been committed to offering in-person instruction as much as possible. For example, Boston University stated in a memo to deans and department chairs that any course that does not have a significant in-person component incrementally erodes the residential character of the BU experience. Their plan, titled Learn from Anywhere (LfA), sets in-person instruction as the default for course delivery, with options for virtual teaching for students who cannot or do not wish to attend in-person. The University of Michigan stated that it will have an in-person public health informed semester without giving significant detail on what that means, only generally stating that large classes will be held remotely, small classes will be held in-person, and medium-size classes will be a hybrid of the two. The Chancellor of NC State University, in a memo sent to deans, directors, and department heads, requested an increase in the number face-to-face and hybrid courses being offered. The University is planning to have lecture classes of up to 100 students with a proposed classroom spacing of 46 feet. (Dr. Katie Mack, a physics professor there, wrote a response letter to this memo, detailing why this plan is a mistake.)

Another strategy has been shifting schedules to accommodate fractions of the campus population at different times. For example, Columbia University plans to have a three term schedule with freshman and sophomores on campus in fall, and juniors and seniors on campus in Spring. University of Massachusetts Amherst has shifted to start classes 2 weeks early, and a few schools are holding in-person classes until Thanksgiving, after which theyll go entirely online. Some plans are intentionally vague and leave decisions up to departments, or even individual instructors, and some are a bit unconventional. A rare few schools have plans that seem possibly safe, such as UCLA, where they expect most classes to be online except those that petition for a need to be in-person, and have sent rigorous emails detailing plans for safety protocols (including contact tracing and widespread testing) on campus. The University of Vermont has adopted a model that gives students the choice to stay home and take virtual classes, allowing them to determine their own risk and comfort level about being physically on campus (however, only 40% of classes will be available online). Harvard has fully committed to 100% online courses.

Although there are many variations of university reopening plans, there are a few themes that appear frequently, listed below.

The general consensus surrounding these plans seems to be that students are terrified and concerned that the results will be disastrous. Students are frustrated with the confusing, conflicting information theyve been given about university reopening, and the sometimes convoluted new schedules and rules theyve been given about what to expect next school year.

For undergraduates, the scarcity of housing at some institutions (due to lower capacity to ensure social distancing) poses an issue for students. For those that would be living in the dorms, there are significant concerns about safety and maintaining distancing in such a tightly packed space. Many students have expressed that paying full tuition and campus fees when many campus services arent being offered seems unfair, even starting petitions for tuition reimbursement or reduction.

The major problem with current plans is that many of them simply arent realistic. Do we really expect all students to comply? In this pandemic, even one rogue infected person (particularly a super-spreader) can spread COVID-19 to classmates, dormmates, and friends without even knowing it. As a result, compliance is required for everyone in the community for anyone to stay safe. This is a problem when students have already been gathering more, spurred by the idea that as young people theyre lower risk, some going as far as having COVID parties which act as contests and sometimes offer money to the first person who gets the disease. Additionally, colleges are filled with high-risk areas for COVID-19, such as the crowded and high contact areas of dorms, dining halls, community bathrooms/facilities, and classrooms. In order to make these spaces safe, the measures that will have to be implemented significantly degrade the residential experience that colleges are desperately trying to cling to. If the importance of in-person classes is to have the quintessential college experience, these plans are missing the point; with rigorous distancing in classrooms, significantly reduced social activities and student group meetings, and strict quarantines in dorms, the college experience of close collaboration and intense social bonding just isnt happening.

Given that most schools are attempting some hybrid format, this leads to the question: how do you coordinate students in-person and online simultaneously? Also, with infection rates rising in 46 states, it is definitely possible that schools will have to abruptly close again, leaving us in the same unprepared and haphazard state we found in March. Students may once again have to hurriedly leave campus, or at least return to fully online classes with no in-person contact. What happens then if classes have to switch to fully virtual again? Both these scenarios require significant extra labor on the part of the instructor and TAs and could cause disruption to the student learning experience. Abruptly switching to online or wrangling both Zoom participants and students in a distanced classroom is a logistical nightmare, and also seems like it would be an all-around lower quality education than if instructors were allowed to dive in to making solid online curricula. Its also very difficult for instructors to plan for classes when schools havent made decisions on schedules and course delivery methods; university leadership is acting as if they can make a last minute decision and faculty can accommodate anything, whereas in reality, it takes time to create an excellent online course.

All around, students are not being well served by many current university plans. This leads to the question of who benefits from these convoluted reopening schemes. University budgets, like other economic sectors, are hurting from the pandemic. However, leading students to feel like theyre being exploited and put at risk for their tuition dollars is unacceptable. On the other hand, a handful of universities (such as the University of Vermont) are genuinely trying to have a conversation with their communities and find what options will best support students, an example that more institutions should follow.

Many of the university plans give information on what undergraduate students can expect for fall and how they will be offered the courses they need to finish their degree. However, these same plans often leave out graduate students, especially student workers (e.g. teaching assistants (TAs) and graduate researchers). Graduate students are in a unique position of being not quite just a student, but not quite an employee either; as a result, university plans are uniquely hard to navigate for graduate students. For example, West Virginia University has a FAQs page for faculty and one for studentswhere would grad students fall in that categorization?

One of the biggest issues facing graduate students is TAs being forced to teach in-person classes, face-to-face with many students, unless they have a specific medical exemption. Given the power dynamics of graduate school, even under normal circumstances its often difficult for students to challenge departmental decisions without risk of hurting their futures in academia; now, its literally life or death, as some universities will rescind pay and healthcare benefits from TAs not willing to risk teaching or holding office hours in-person.

For those who do end up teaching in campus classrooms, its unclear how much of the burden of safety enforcement will fall on instructors. With no clear plans for how mask wearing, social distancing, and symptom monitoring will be enforced, there is a risk that these responsibilities will fall to those, especially TAs, who are already vulnerable in classrooms and dont have a lot of power to ensure compliance. Some universities omitted detailed guidance for graduate student researchers, expecting them to return to campus and make safety plans with their individual departments or even their individual advisors. Although allowing departments and research groups to make their own safety decisions allows for flexibility to fit each individual situation, it also leaves graduate student researchers without important protections for their health and job security.

For graduate students in particular, theres the additional stress of not only being an employee, but also having to make progress towards a degree. Qualifying and comprehensive exams and PhD defenses, extremely stressful exams even in normal times, are now being moved online, forcing students to prepare for and take these exams while dealing with the additional hurdles of working-from-home and stresses from dealing with the pandemic. Students are working with overburdened advisors who are juggling their usual responsibilities while being at home with their families, plus having more faculty meetings than usual to plan for the uncertain future. The additional stress of the pandemic has impacted student mental health, especially for graduate students who already face a multitude of mental health problems. A few departments, like WVUs Physics department, have made adjustments to degree schedules, essentially stopping the clock on qualifying exam timelines to acknowledge that we are in a unique time and should not try to proceed as usual given the circumstances. Similarly, UCLAs Astronomy Division delayed comprehensive exams to accommodate how students needed extra time to prepare due to the effects of the pandemic.

Overall, graduate students are grappling with uncertainty on all frontsin the courses theyre taking, their research work, the classes they teach, their degree milestones, their health in this pandemic, and even their future career prospects.

Undergraduate students, graduate students, faculty and staff have been (or will be) negatively affected by many of the policies laid out by universities attempting to bring us back to a state of pre-pandemic normalcy. The authors of this piece strongly believe we would all be better off if we acknowledged our current situation and adapted to it instead of forcing things to resemble the pre-pandemic world, a world which simply no longer exists. Universities must do better, and create realistic plans based on the safety and wellbeing of their undergraduates, grad students, faculty, and staff.

Hope Mars probe is headed for the red planet after picture perfect launch – CNET

A history-making launch for the UAE.

The United Arab Emirates has taken a historic first step to interplanetary exploration, with the launch of the Arab world's first mission to Mars. The Hope, or Al Amal, spacecraft departed Earth from Tanegashima, Japan, with an assist from a Mitsubishi rocket booster on Sunday afternoon, shortly before 3 p.m PT.

As with all rocket launches, it started with a countdown. But like many aspects of the mission, the countdown was also history-making. The final 10 seconds prior to launch were broadcast in Arabic for the first time. The mission was not without its hiccups earlier in the week, when weather in Japanforced the launch to be delayed twice. And a bigger issue plagued the development of Hope: the shadow of the coronavirus pandemic hovered over the mission.

"The pandemic was not something we had in the program," Fahad Al Mehri, executive director of the space sector at the UAE space agency, said during a live broadcast. "It's not something we could engineer ourselves around."

But the pandemic became but a lingering thought and the skies cleared for launch on Sunday. At 2:58 p.m. PT/1:58 a.m. UAE time Monday, the Mitsubishi rocket booster made its picture perfect departure from the Tanegashima Space Center.

"Just before the launch, there was pin drop silence," Faraz Javed, a reporter at the Mohammed bin Rashid Space Center, saidduring a live broadcast. "Once the rocket took off there were cheers, there was joy -- I actually even saw people crying."

The rocket punched through the blue to the upper layers of the atmosphere, and the first stage boosters separated cleanly. At around 3:55 p.m. PT, the Hope probe separated from the Mitsubishi rocket booster to light applause from the launch center in Japan. The separation placed the car-sized probe into a transfer orbit that will now carry it around 500 million kilometers (310 million miles) to the red planet.

Provided the journey is a smooth one, the probe will arrive at Mars in about seven months and shortly after, begin its first observations.

The spacecraft is destined to take up residence in Mars orbitto "study the dynamics in the Martian atmosphere on a global scale, and on both diurnal and seasonal timescales," according to the UAE Space Agency's Emirates Mars Mission website. The probe is also equipped to take high-resolution photos of the red planet.

While large agencies like NASA, the European Space Agency and Roscosmos tend to hog the limelight, the UAE Space Agency is helping show that there's room for smaller programs to make a mark on space exploration.

Hope is one of several missions aiming to launch within a window of opportunity when Earth and Mars are in optimal positions in relation to each other. NASA hopes to follow suit with its Perseverance rover at the end of July, while China is also set to send off its own orbiter and rover in the Tianwen-1 mission later this month.

If these missions move ahead as scheduled, then it will be a busy February for Mars watchers. Hope has earned the distinction of being the first of the three to start the epic journey.

Liverpool will soon have another pressing need, and Naby Keita’s replacement heads possible recruits – Liverpool.com

Jurgen Klopp famously once said that "no playmaker in the world can be as good as a good counter-pressing situation.

Pressing has gone hand in hand with the German manager ever since he took over at German club Mainz with an evolution of how he likes his team to play at both Borussia Dortmund and now Liverpool.

While the quality of his sides has grown exponentially throughout his managerial career, Klopps teams have always delivered on the promise of intense pressing from the front.

Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino have done so to great avail in recent seasons and the latters place inside the top 20 of successful pressures across Europes top five leagues in 2019/20 showcases that.

According to Statsbomb data, via FBRef, the Brazilian ranks 20th for successful pressures with a total of 209 this season. The metric measures how many times a player regains possession within five seconds of applying pressure to the opposition. This is for a side who are the fifth most successful in Europe's top five leagues in terms of percentage, as well as the best in the Premier League.

While the complexion of Klopps squad could change in terms of creativity over the coming seasons, there will always be the desire to press. Firmino is now 28 and, although there is no sign of his influence waning, any attempt to replicate that sort of quality in the future will rely upon finding those who are adept at the pressing game. That might come in the mould of a striker, or further back.

To examine efficient pressers that Liverpool could be looking at in the coming years, we run the rule over three of the best across Europes top five leagues.

Wout Weghorst (Wolfsburg)

The Wolfsburg striker leads the line for the Bundesliga side, who are one of the few clubs more successful at pressing than Liverpool across Europe.

He ranks as 15th highest for successful pressures this season with a total of 213 which is mightily impressive when you consider other players higher than him on the list tend to include midfielders.

Only a handful of strikers rank higher than Weghorst in terms of successful pressures which shows how effective he is at winning the ball back in key attacking areas. The 26-year-old ranks top in terms of pressure applied in the final third with 403 in total and he could be an interesting option for Liverpool.

What those statistics dont outline is the fact that Weghorst is a sizable figure at 6ft6 and may be viewed as an alternative option for Liverpool off the bench.

Divock Origi is currently the tallest player in the Reds attack but he isnt necessarily an aerial presence and a combination of Weghorsts pressing capabilities and extra height would be a fascinating proposition. He is 27, which works against him, but this is only his eighth campaign of senior football due to breaking through later.

Danny Ings (Southampton)

Ings goal-scoring record this season has led to some Liverpool fans opening up the question of whether or not he could be set for a return to Anfield.

However, past his impressive goal return, the 27-year-old presents an interesting option from a pressing point of view too.

Ralph Hasnehuttls intense pressing system on the south coast has seen them undertake a remarkable turnaround this season and it wouldnt be unrealistic to say that Ings ticks a number of boxes. The likelihood of him returning to Anfield remains minimal, but the fact he ranks 13th for successful pressures this season - no centre forward ranks higher than Ings.

Like Weghorst, he is 27, but has missed several years of his career due to unfortunate injuries sustained at Liverpool. He is now over those and is among the Premier League's best strikers, and though a reunion is unlikely, Liverpool will watch his continual development at St Mary's with interest - and potentially a hint of regret.

Konrad Laimer (RB Leipzig)

One flaw in looking directly at pressing statistics right at the top of the rankings is that defenders or players in less possession-based sides tend to show up more.

However, RB Leipzigs intricate system means that Laimer is able to utilise his pressing qualities on a consistent basis. The 23-year-old ranks 2nd with 276 successful pressures this season - or 11.7 per 90 minutes - and shows the adept nature of Laimer winning possession back.

As a box-to-box midfielder, the Austrian often applies pressure in key areas from midfield and being able to do so in Klopps midfield is a key responsibility. While his technical attributes may not be at the level of Georginio Wijnaldum or Jordan Henderson, continued development for Laimer may see him become a future Klopp recruit.

Liverpool's relationship with the Bundesliga club needs little explanation, likewise with the Red Bull football group in general. Moving from RB Salzburg to Leipzig in 2017, he followed the same path as Naby Keita, and even played alongside the Guinean in Germany. A right back then - another positive, given how Klopp likes versatility - he has now essentially moved into the middle as Keita's replacement.

Manchester United defender Eric Bailly rushed to hospital with nasty-looking head injury suffered in FA Cup – talkSPORT.com

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has confirmed Eric Bailly will undergo routine checks at hospital after suffering a nasty-looking head injury against Chelsea on Sunday.

The 26-year-old clashed heads with teammate Harry Maguire which forced a lengthy stoppage just before half-time in Uniteds 3-1 FA Cup semi-final defeat at Wembley.

Maguire was patched up with a bandage, while Bailly walked off the pitch, but then required a stretcher.

He was replaced by Anthony Martial in the 47th minute as he was applauded by both sets of players.

It was Baillys second head knock in quick succession after he collided with Chelsea defender Kurt Zouma.

Solskjaer said: I hope hell be fine. I havent seen him after the game. He had a cut in the back of his head, so Ill go and see the doc afterwards.

He has gone to hospital to go through all the routine checks.

To make matters worse for United, Olivier Giroud then gave Chelsea a deserved lead as the first-half eventually finished in the 58th minute.

Mason Mount doubled Uniteds advantage a minute into the second-half when David de Gea was unable to keep out his tame long-range effort.

The Red Devils fate was then sealed as Harry Maguire turned a Marcos Alonso cross into his own net with 16 minutes remaining.

Bruno Fernandes pulled one back for United from the penalty spot late on after Martial was tripped by Callum Hudson-Odoi.

The MonsterVerse Has A Titan With Even MORE Heads Than Ghidorah – Screen Rant

One of the unseen Titans in Godzilla: King of the Monsters, Yamata no Orochi, has even more heads than King Ghidorah in the MonsterVerse.

One of the unseen Titans in Godzilla: King of the Monsters has even more heads than Ghidorah in Legendarys MonsterVerse. This mysterious Titan, whose name is Yamata no Orochi, hasnt been officially revealed, but it has been confirmed that he similar to Ghidorah has multiple heads.

In Godzilla: King of the Monsters, it was discovered that the MonsterVerse is the home to a large number of Titans. Godzilla, Ghidorah, and Mothra, Rodan, and Kong are all based on existing monsters, while the rest are original to the MonsterVerse. Four of them (Scylla, Behemoth, Methuselah, and a third M.U.T.O.) all appeared in King of the Monsters as temporary minions of the The False King, Ghidorah. There were 11 more Titans as well that were woken up by Ghidorahs wide-reaching call, but none appeared onscreen. However, their names were included on monitors. Their names and locations provide clues as to the nature of these Titans and what they look like.

Yamata no Orochi, the Titan that was being kept at a Monarch outpost on Mount Fuji in Japan, is based on the legendary Japanese creature of the same name. The mythical beast is said to be a red-eyed dragon with eight heads and eight tails. Of course, this description doesnt necessarily mean that the MonsterVerses Orochi shares the same physical characteristics, butKing of the Monsters director Mike Dougherty has even confirmed in response to a fan question that the MonsterVerse version of the creature is also indeed a multi-headed monster.

This confirms that Yamata no Orochi has eight heads,but exactly what he looks like in the MonsterVerse has yet to be revealed. Hes a dragon in the legends, but he could be a totally different creature in the MonsterVerse. He could have received the Yamata no Orochi name from Monarch simply because of the location and the number of heads. Or, its possible that he is a dragon, but differs from Ghidorah in a big way. He may look a bit more like the serpent-like dragons from Asian cultures. Orochi could be one of several dragons hiding in the MonsterVerse. Furthermore, his similarities to Ghidorah open up questions about his origin. Ghidorah is an alien; is the MonsterVerse's other multi-headed Titan a visitor from another planet as well?

Its interesting to note that Ghidorah himself was inspired by the legend of Yamata no Orochi back in the 1960s. Toho has also adapted Orochi to the big screen in 1959s Birth of Japan and the 1994 monster movie, Orochi, the Eight-Headed Dragon. Its worth wondering how the MonsterVerses Orochi differs from Tohos versions and King Ghidorah. Regardless, an eight-headed monster would certainly be a sight to see in a future MonsterVerse movie. Tangling with a creature with eight heads all snapping at him at once would undoubtedly create a unique challenge for Godzilla. Alternatively, Orochi could be one of the Titans now under Godzillas control. If so, he could end up serving as a powerful ally.

SPORTS writer Peter Badel (C-M, July 18) is right.

How many times does embarrassing failure on the field have to happen before pride, arrogance and self-interests (of the top guys) are identified as the primary factors needing to be removed from the performance equation?

Poor management, unqualified administrators and unsuitable decision-makers in the Broncos club are obviously combining to prove glaringly that the existing formula is badly out of whack.

The top guys have to go.

Unfortunately that presents the task of finding better-suited replacements (which may be a challenge in itself).

But what the Broncos are now is, in truth, nothing, so how could they be worse off?

Clearly successful businessmen don't necessarily make for good sports club administrators. And good footballers are effectively nothing on the field without skilled coaches and strong leadership.

It just goes to show that those who are still fit and healthy are not up to standard.

A new coach? What difference will he make?

Some players are past their use-by date and yet if the coach drops them who would take their place?

The amount of points scored against this team just goes to show that they are tackle shy, and the coach cannot tackle for them.

Maybe the number of points scored against should equal the number of times around the oval or sprints. Maybe that would wake some of them up.

Although the Titans aren't performing any better they look more likely to achieve this at the moment.

The Broncos need a new coaching system because Anthony Seibold is failing dismally.

There is a need to bring in an experienced coach to steady the ship.

Ben Ikin has good qualifications to replace Paul White as CEO. David Fifita might then decide to remain at Red Hill.

If the Broncos are to save their reputation they need to sack the current coach.

WITH the Broncos in free fall one has to question the theory that Anthony Seibold is the problem and should be sacked to remedy the situation.

My view is the situation is more complex in that there are a number of matters that have contributed to the current mess.

Firstly, the blow torch needs to be applied to both the current administration and a core of current players.

With regard to the acquisition and retention of players, the administration, and in particular the person overseeing the roster, appear to have a lot of questions that require answering for the decisions that have been implemented.

With regard to on-field personnel, there is a core of senior players who are collecting a pay cheque under false pretences by their lack of effort on the field combined with a distinct lack of mentoring for the younger players in the team.

Correct the problems highlighted and you will go a long way to solving the problems at Red Hill.

GET OVER DISMISSAL

CHRIS Blanch (Letters, July 18) is correct that the republic cause is not advanced by rehashing the 1975 dismissal of prime minister Gough Whitlam and attacking the Queen.

This is evidenced by the backlash, in particular, by republic-supporting Liberal Party federal MPs against Australian Republic Movement chair Peter FitzSimons for doing so.

In 1975, each of the key players, governor-general John Kerr, opposition leader Malcolm Fraser and prime minister Whitlam were at fault for various reasons.

Kerr for acting precipitously and in secrecy, Fraser for pushing too hard for a dismissal with an election looming in any case, and Whitlam for failing to tell the Senate, immediately after his dismissal that he was no longer PM, allowing supply to pass under caretaker PM Fraser.

Even though the Queen was in much communication with Kerr, she was too experienced and careful to be implicated in the dismissal.

So chasing imaginary rabbits down holes left by the events of 1975 is a fruitless exercise.

Instead the focus for the republic cause are the lessons learnt from the failed 1999 republic referendum.

The first lesson is to listen to Australians on what model for a republic they desire.

A plebiscite on the models before any further referendum can ensure that the next referendum presents a model that the people desire.

The Republic of Ireland is the exemplar of how direct election of a head of state might work in a Westminster system like ours.

DISCIPLINE NEEDED TO BEAT VIRUS

THERE would not be one person who is not sympathetic to the coronavirus situation in Victoria.

I see and hear the media conferences daily from different people in authority and frankly the messages are becoming boring, with the same passive rhetoric each day apart from the update to statistical figures of increases or reductions in the rate of infections and those who have passed away.

All leaders are singing the same song of advice and encouragement, but the one word that is missing in every dialogue is "discipline".

In many cases, on many issues in our lives, humans are their own worst enemy. That is the case right now.

People do listen to the message, but do they actually hear and understand the message?

Many apparently don't and think they are bulletproof.

Containment and eventual eradication will take significant time, with hopefully a vaccine to do the job, but in the meantime, everyone must commit to personal and collective discipline.

Our leaders really need to change their language a bit and be more demanding, requiring more discipline in our communities.

CRUELTY LACKS DETERRENT

PRAISE be to columnist Kylie Lang (C-M, July 18) for highlighting a serious but neglected issue regarding abuse of animals.

Abuse occurs for a range of reasons none of which are acceptable in an ethically aware society.

As one who was an active animal welfare advocate for three decades, through the Queensland government's stakeholder collaboration process, I provided input into many pieces of Queensland legislation that were either under review or being newly developed, including Queensland's current Animal Care and Protection Act 2001. This act allows for a range of penalties for animal abuse in line with the expectations of the state's citizens.

Your columnist is correct in identifying the lack of action in assigning appropriate penalties allowable under this legislation as lying squarely with the magisterial legal system.

Penalties continue to be handed down based on long outdated precedents and it has been far too long since any magistrates had the guts to set new precedents.

This is why so little has changed and why so little works as a deterrent.

This must change not only for the sake of abused animals but for the sake of children who see abusive behaviour given a slap on the wrist.

Scott Aukerman & Adam Scott give up on Red Hot Chili Peppers podcast after first episode, switch to Talking Heads – Brooklyn Vegan

Scott Aukerman and Adam Scott first went through the full discography of U2 with podcast U Talkin' U2 To Me?, then they moved on to R.E.M. for a new podcast, R U Talkin R.E.M. Re: Me? Both were fun, silly, made with genuine affection for the groups, and massively, sometimes maddeningly digressive (in a fun and silly way).

For their third band discography podcast, they announced last week that they would be tacklingRed Hot Chili Peppers. A controversial choice, both Scotts noted in the first episode, and it became quickly apparent that neither of them seemed that into it. (This also didn't seem like a "bit.") Unlike on the U2 and R.E.M. podcasts, which devoted a show to every album, they tackled RHCP's (not very good) first two albums (1984's Andy Gill-produced self titled, and 1985's George Clinton-produced Freaky Styley), they skipped a lot of tracks, and by the end of the episode you could tell they were wondering if they made a mistake.

Apparently they did, as the second episode of R U Talkin RHCP RE: Me? appeared this morning, still with the Blood Sugar Sex Magic-homage podcast image, but with an odd episode title: "77". (Episodes are named after the album they're discussing.) Things start off normal as they get ready to talk about RHCP's (pretty good) 1987 album The Uplift Mofo Party Plan, when they both start talking about how they wish they'd picked Talking Heads instead.If you've listened to theirpodcasts before, you know they are prone to a ton of total digression sub-podcasts (like "I Love Films"), so when Scott and Adam suddenly switch to "U Talkin' Talking Heads 2 My Talking Head?" you wonder if it's another joke. But it stays Talking Heads for the rest of the podcast as they, clearly impromptu, discuss the band's debut album, 77. "Adam, I gotta say I'm happy we did this," Aukerman says at the end of the episode, with Adam replying "Me too...and I think we should see this one through."

UPDATE: The title has officially changed to U Talkin' Talking Heads 2 My Talking Head and the logo is now a riff on Remain in Light's album cover.

Tweed Heads: Appeal to find 12-year-old Aaliyah Winnett – NEWS.com.au

Police are calling for public help to find a 12-year-old girl who went missing from a home in NSWs far north coast.

Aaliyah Winnett was last seen leaving a property on Blue Waters Cres, Tweed Heads West, on July 7.

Police say family had been in contact with her via mobile phone since then but she failed to return home and was reported missing to officers from the Tweed-Byron Police District on July 16.

Police have since launched an investigation into her whereabouts, and both authorities and family have concerns for her welfare.

Aaliyah is described as being of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander appearance, between 150 and 160cm tall, of thin build, with long brown hair and green eyes.

She was last seen wearing a white T-shirt, black jumper with a grey pattern, grey tracksuit pants with a red and blue stripe and black Vans sneakers.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Jackson learned the ways of politics on Wednesday as he and his family played host to Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern on a visit up the road to the electorate of Mana.

Ardern dropped in to family-run business Classic Uniforms & Sportswear, which was a recipient of the Governments Covid-19 wage subsidy.

Jackson doesnt yet know entirely if hell continue the family legacy, but he works after school in the factory and explained to Stuff he didnt expect the PM to wear his T-shirt he was just asked to make it.

Dad, and general manager Jeremy Werkhoven said without the wage subsidy it was likely there would be 20 people without jobs from the factory, thanks to the pandemics impact.

The Prime Minister was visiting a Labour safe seat spanning Porirua and southern Kpiti - won by Minister Kris Faafoi by about 11,000 votes in the last election. The party vote was more evenly split Labour only gained about 3000 more votes than National in the same election.

After the factory, the PM visited national Pasifika health provider Vaka Tautua, in Elsdon, in the hills above central Porirua. She was the first Prime Minister, they said, who had ever visited the group.

Group community leader and former service user Joseph Sio stood up and gave a heartfelt address directly to the PM.

He chose Vaka Tautua to help him because of its Pasifika cultural approach. The group, he said, never gave up on him, even when I was in really dark places.

Groups like Vaka Tautua helped the Government out of dark places too, during the Covid-19 response specifically offering community outreach it couldnt achieve on its own, the PM said.

And if Covid has taught us one thing, and it has taught us much, its that those community responses were critical.

The community response in Porirua was a warm one whatever else was happening with the Opposition, the PM was exactly where she wanted to be on Wednesday.

Endangered species could benefit from NFL name change – Sports and Weather Right Now

Ron Sutherland isnt much of a football fan, but he has an interest in what Washingtons NFL team chooses as a replacement for its soon-to-be-retired name. The franchises decision could affect the future of an endangered species he has spent a decade of his career studying.

A chief scientist at the nonprofit Wildlands Network in Durham, North Carolina, Sutherland is among those in favor of Red Wolves, which has been endorsed by a segment of the teams fan base. The red wolf is on the brink of going extinct in the wild for a second time, and Sutherland suggested the exposure that would come with an NFL team naming itself after the animal could only help its chance of survival.

It would mean a lot of the country would suddenly hear something about the story of this animal, and thats what the red wolf needs, Sutherland said in a phone interview. Youve got this incredibly dire conservation going on right now, and people dont even know about it. I think it would bring recognition to the red wolf.

If you hadnt heard of the red wolf before it emerged as a potential replacement name for Washingtons NFL team, or perhaps wondered whether it was even a real animal, youre not alone. There are a lot of people who wish it werent.

At the behest of state officials and landowners who opposed the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Services red wolf reintroduction program in eastern North Carolina, Congress commissioned a nearly $400,000 study in 2018 to determine whether red wolves were a distinct species or a genetic hybrid of the coyote, a plentiful member of the canine family not eligible for federal protection under the Endangered Species Act. The evidence of the study by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine, released in April 2019, supported the classification of the contemporary red wolf as a distinct species, tracing the animal back to ancestors that lived more than 10,000 years ago.

Red wolves were once found from Texas to Florida, throughout the southeast and up to New York, so its likely they once roamed the D.C. area. They were wiped out along the Atlantic Coast around 1900 but survived along the Gulf Coast and were designated an endangered species in 1967. In the late 1970s, as the animals increasingly bred with coyotes, Fish and Wildlife officials captured the last remaining purebred red wolves in Texas and Louisiana and placed them in zoos in an attempt to revive the species.

This is one of the critically endangered mammal species on the entire planet, said Sutherland, who has been a vocal advocate for red wolf conservation since 2010. The amazing thing is that a lot of Americans have no idea that this species is even in our backyard.

In 1987, the Fish and Wildlife Service launched the worlds first effort to restore a native top carnivore back to the wild. The agency released three pairs of adult red wolves in the Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge on eastern North Carolinas Albemarle Peninsula, located inland from the Outer Banks. The red wolf population in the area peaked at more than 150 in 2006 but has since been in decline.

Hunters and the Fish and Wildlife Services management of the restoration project are both to blame, Sutherland said. While there are roughly 240 red wolves in captivity, the Fish and Wildlife Service stopped releasing new wolves into the wild in 2015.

These days, the red wolf population on the Albemarle Peninsula is believed to be about 20. A Flickr account maintained by Wildlands Network features 100,000 publicly accessible photographs of red wolves and other wildlife taken by cameras on the site, including deer, coyotes, quail, raccoons and one of the largest black bear concentrations in the United States.

For the red wolves to stave off extinction in the wild, Sutherland said its imperative that the Fish and Wildlife Service resume releasing the wolves from captivity. He also endorses incentive programs that would reward locals for having red wolves on their property. In the meantime, he and his colleagues continue to engage in outreach with hunters and farmers who live near the refuge, reassuring them that the red wolf, which grows to be between 50 and 80 pounds, is not the European Big Bad Wolf thats inside our heads.

The red wolf has not hurt anybody in 30 years down there in North Carolina, which is a pretty remarkable legacy, Sutherland said. Theyre shy animals; they dont really like people.

Red wolves have several characteristics befitting a football team.

The wolves are efficient top carnivores, and they can run down a deer and kill it, Sutherland said. They can take out things like raccoons and possums and beavers. Compared to a coyote, wolves have longer legs, and theyre bigger and more muscular and stronger. Their territories can be about 50 square miles, so they can cover a lot of ground. Theyre fast, stealthy, disappear into the forest pretty easily when they want to. Superlative senses. Theyre definitely athletic, and theyre beautiful animals. Theyre pretty amazing.

Sutherland acknowledged that Washington adopting the red wolf as its mascot might perpetuate some of the myths and misconceptions about the species that he has worked hard to dispel over the years, with several fan-designed logo and uniform mock-ups for the name featuring slash marks and fangs. Still, he sees a lot more potential good resulting from the red wolf entering the national consciousness.

One would hope the current Redskins fans would show some love toward the red wolf and do more to help save the species, because you wouldnt want your mascot to go extinct in the wild again, Sutherland said. I dont really see any negatives. I think it makes sense to have an animal mascot, and I think having a red wolf would be a great choice.

Half of them are leaving, or want to leave .... Newsroom's Mel Reid tells us the story behind her stories on social workers and Oranga Tamariki.

When Newsroom's Melanie Reid broke the story more than a year ago of social workers attempts to take a newborn baby from its mother in Hastings, it triggered five separate investigations into Oranga Tamariki and calls for the resignation of its chief executive Grinne Moss.

But that wasn't the end of Reid's own investigations. She started getting emails at one stage one every eight minutes from social workers.

The emails and texts revealed a culture of fear among the social workers who were willing or desperate to tell Reid their stories but were too afraid to be named, because they might lose their jobs and never again be employed in the public service.

They also revealed a "de-professionalisation of social work", says Reid.

"That is what all the social workers say, that it is the blind leading the qualified, that the Grinne Moss school of operation is corporatisation, and that we are replacing qualified social workers who truly know what they're doing, have spent three to four years getting degrees, they have been replaced by people who are unqualified."

Reid's recent Newsroom stories detailing Grinne Moss' career background and sudden departure from the private aged care company Bupa, as well as the complaints from social workers about the bullying, silencing, culture were criticised by the Minister Tracey Martin as an attack on Moss.

She told bFM that she would have to spend time digesting the accusations by "anonymous" people and talk to her staff about what she needs to follow up on. She also suggested the articles were written to attack Moss.

Reid says it shows the unwillingness of the minister to address the issues. She says people won't be named because they say not only will they get fired from their job but they won't get a job in the public service again.

"Everyone knows that in this day and age if you talk out, if you whistle-blow you'll be in trouble."

Reid says only one of the 400 emails she's received has praised the agency, saying that Grinne Moss is doing a good job and that its not as bad as you think.

Reid understands that a couple of "pockets" around the country are doing well because they have good managers" Waikato and Takapuna among them.

"One of the biggest problems that people talk about to me is that we've got all these unqualified people running the social workers and that we're left endlessly ticking boxes. Everyone's treated the same so whether you're a new immigrant social worker working for Oranga Tamariki or you've been working there for years everyone has to tick the same boxes; everyone has to go through the same red tape."

She says she has never met a social worker who was not absolutely committed to their job and desperately wants the best for the children, but the structure and the organisation and the process that is now in place at Oranga Tamariki is not allowing them to do their job.

Social worker and PhD student on social work at Auckland University, John Darroch, also talks of a "culture of silence in child protection" at Oranga Tamariki.

"What I've heard consistently from social workers over many many years now is that social workers who speak up on ethical or political issues within Child Youth and Family and now Oranga Tamariki are subject to bullying or they are otherwise disadvantaged," he says.

"When social workers aren't allowed to speak up they're prevented from speaking up about ongoing injustice and ongoing harm that's being perpetrated on Mori, I simply don't think its good enough to say, Look they are employees and they should keep their heads down. As professionals, as social workers who have a code of ethics I think they have an ethical responsibility to speak up, and the profession needs to be supporting them to do so."

Darroch says the current Oranga Tamariki leadership is trying to defend the organisation even against "legitimate critique".

Mori having been calling for decades for devolution - services by Mori and for Mori, he says.

"What we need to see is the systematic, government-led devolution of services and that needs to include resourcing," Darroch says.

"The crown needs to sit down with Mori and go, How are we going to design a system that works for you?. And I think that's the thing that none of these reviews have done."

July 17, 2020 Adoption of cloud computing services by public entities impacts many civic sectors, said local officials on Wednesday.

In an Amazon Web Services webinar, local representatives from Louisville and Minneapolis detailed how cloud services helped spur innovation in their respective municipalities, benefitting health, transportation and overall safety.

Emily Ward, state planning director for emergency preparedness and response at the Minnesota Department of Health, detailed ways in which the healthcare sector leveraged and repurposed the citys cloud services in response to the pandemic.

The departments information technology sector developed two applications to assist in getting medical supplies to those in need, called POD PreCheck and POD Locator.

PODs, or point(s) of dispensing, are community locations at which state and local agencies dispense medical materials and medications to the public.

POD PreCheck allowed clients to prescreen their conditions electronically, which assisted the Minnesota Department of Health in delivering the best medication to consumers with speed and efficiency, reducing wait times.

POD Locator is a dynamic mapping application that shows the locations of PODs on a searchable map and provides any site-specific instructions.

The scalability offered by the cloud was the most desirable feature, said Ward. This app will still work if more than 5 million users try to access it.

It is Important that it remains stable, she added.

Meanwhile, across the country, the city of Louisville is leveraging data provided by its open source software and cloud technology to better understand the use of new transportation technologies in the city, such as accounting for the rise of electronic scooters.

Louisvilles IT department created an application that connects mobility companies with local government agencies, in an attempt to safely manage public space.

Data drawn from the application allowed employees of the public IT sector to measure the companies operation compliance with a geofence the city enforced around a public downtown weekend event, where no scooters were allowed to operate.

The public data not only revealed non-compliance, but further exposed that new transportation technologies are not distributed equitably.

Through the data, the city found that transportation services were not located in disadvantaged neighborhoods. The city responded by requiring more equitable distribution of services.

Michael Schnuerle, director of open source operations at the Open Mobility Foundation, said that the cities cloud services play an important role in increasing capabilities to move data across different systems and automating certain data initiatives.

At the same time, the scale of global datasphere is expected to be five times bigger in 2025 than it was in 2018, growing from 33 zettabytes to 175 zettabytes. Each zettabyte, by the way, is equal to 1 trillion gigabytes.

With data taking an ever more important role in our lives, the cloud is becoming an indispensable part of business, technology, and society as a whole.
