From a poll conducted for 151 B2C operators, there would be a drop of 12% in gaming revenue in 2020, and this is because of the drop in sports betting revenue. The revenue is predicted to experience a 40% decline. Also, 64 B2Bs were surveyed, and they also pointed to an expected 20% decline in revenue.

According to Faruggia, there has been an increased emphasis on the need to protect vulnerable players, especially now that our daily lives and finances have been heavily disrupted, and many are in the dark about their financial future. But then, the industry is also experiencing huge pressure through operational costs, and they have to consider this in line with the new reality.

The body is making efforts to ensure that operators with licenses adhere to the guidelines, while those without licenses, who are out there to make illegal money and put the public in danger are stopped.

The economy of mga received 1.56bn from gaming in 2019, which represents a 9.6% year-on-year growth according to data from the 2019 report of the Malta Gaming Authority AKA the MGA.

According to the report, theres been an ongoing enforcement drive by the MGA, during which it has succeeded in cancelling 14 casino licenses in 2019 alone. Theres also been a 3.9% increase in the number of casino firms and sites in operation on which you can do things like play online blackjack and crowd favourite slots on taking the total number to 294, which is still below what it was in 2017.

A look at the 1.56bn additional profit and the total value of the goods/services that the casino industry produces, minus the total consumed value, placed the gaming sector at the third position in the list of the private sectors that contributed highest to the economy of Malta. It stands just behind the retail, food, and accommodation industry at number one and professional services at number two.

Talking about this, the MGA also proposed that gaming also helps in the generation of added value through other ancillary and affiliate services to other main sectors like the real estate, distributive trades, catering services and hospitality, ICT activities, financial sector and professional services sector.

In 2019, the gaming industry provided up to 7,417 jobs, which is a 9.2% year-on-year increase. Out of the total number of jobs mentioned above, the online gaming industry had 6,593. Now, the MGA did not announce the total gaming revenue for the industry, but it went ahead to announce the revenues gained by different types of games.

The first set is made up of the player versus house casino games, and this accounts for more than 56% of the total revenue, against the 55.4% of the previous year. In this category, the games that took the centre stage were slots, and they accounted for more than 74.4% of the revenue made by this category. The table games stood at a distant 21.5%.

The second category is made up of sports betting, and this raked in 36.3% of the total revenue, signalling a drop in the 39.0% that it generated the year before. The most prevalent game in this sector is the game of football, which brought in 76.4% of the total revenue, while the contribution by tennis stood at 7.7%, and basketball contributed 5.9%.

For the third category, we have player versus player, games and this raked in 7.7% of the total revenue. Poker contributed 81.9% to this, and betting exchanges brought in 10.3%.

The body also has another category of games that it gives licenses for, and this type 4 license is given for controlled skill games. But because the revenue that came through this was very minimal in the scheme of things, it wasnt added.

There was also a 12.7% growth in the number of active player profiles in online casinos operating with a license from Malta, with the number standing at 20.4m at the moment.

14 casinos were cancelled while the MGA was enforcing its regulations in 2019. This is an increase from the 8 that were cancelled in 2018 and 3 that received the same treatment in 2017. Also, the regulatory body sent 11 licensed casinos into suspension, the same number they did in 2018.

They placed great emphasis on ensuring that the increase in enforcement and compliance they are embarking on reflects its structure and governance. According to the chief executive of the MGA, Heathcliff Faruggia, they committed more money to compliance, to ensure that the risk-based approach to enforcement and regulation is implemented.

There was an increase in the total number of companies operating with licenses in Malta as well, going from 283 in 2018 to 294 in 2019. But this is still not up to what was the case in 2017 when they had 296 companies. There was also an increase in the total number of active licenses from 286 to 298.

They issued new licenses to 53 out of 89 applicants. This is below the 93 that were handed licenses in 2018, and the explanation given by MGA about this is that it was because of the alterations they made in their licensing system from August 2018. The new provision holds that there wouldnt be any need for new licenses for operators who already possess the critical gaming supply or gaming service license when they want to start offering products that are captured by a different class of license.

The MGA also delved into ad hoc responsible gambling audits in 2019.

Coronavirus rumors and hoaxes: Alabama health officials address misinformation on testing, cases – AL.com

If one person in your family tests positive for coronavirus, everyone in the household is listed as positive even if theyve never been tested. Everyone who dies during the coronavirus pandemic is counted as a COVID death. Wearing a mask is bad for you.

Chances are, youve seen or heard one of those statements since the coronavirus pandemic began in March. But just because they are circulating doesnt mean they should be accepted at face value.

The Alabama Department of Public Health and the Jefferson County Department of Health are addressing some of these rumors in a series of social media posts.

Rumors and misinformation can easily circulate within communities during a crisis. Do your part to the stop the spread of rumors by doing three easy things: Find trusted sources of information; share information from trusted sources; discourage others from sharing information from unverified sources, ADPH said in a recent post.

ADPH cited to examples of recent rumors or misinformation that have been circulated. From ADPH:

We believe people are using recent quality control issues with out of state laboratories not used by Alabama and an incident where the CDC distributed tests that did not meet early quality control measures at the beginning of the pandemic in February to create rumors of tainted tests.

With regard to the misinformation provided in the screenshot reading "So if your Corona test is positive it could also be the common cold," if you visit the link provided: cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/testing/serology-overview.html, you will see the excerpt that was screen captured is discussing the antibody test for SAR-CoV-2, not the viral test used to test current infection. This post is misrepresenting information which may lead you to believe that if you get a positive COVID-19 test result it means you could have a cold.

The PCR test for SARS-CoV-2 is very specific, meaning a positive test is highly reliable. On a side note, the Alabama Department of Public Health does not recommend antibody testing for diagnosis of COVID-19 because of accuracy and interpretation of such tests. Antibody tests are not authorized by the FDA for diagnostic purposes in COVID-19 and some antibody tests have been removed from the market due to inaccuracy.

Jefferson County

The Jefferson County Department of Health has also provided answers to some of the most common coronavirus myths. Top of the list is one that just wont seem to go away:

Question Ive heard in Jefferson County that if one family member tests positive, the entire family is counted as positive and that is what is inflating our numbers.

Not true: Jefferson Countys care numbers are not based on the number of positive test results person. Only the first positive counts towards the case numbers. Example: If a person tests positive, has the virus and requires multiple tests to see if they are negative, those positive tests are not counted as additional positive tests.

A proclamation of a Civil State of Emergency, a stay-at-home order, and more important directives still in place amid the coronavirus pandemic in Maine.

AUGUSTA, Maine Editor's note: The above video is a NEWS CENTER Maine VERIFY on why the government requiring people to wear face masks does not violate constitutional rights.

It may feel like every day a new coronavirus, COVID-19 related order is put in place or an old one expiresit can get a little confusing. So, heres a list of the important orders that are still in place statewide you should know about.

Civil State of Emergency:

On Wednesday, July 8, Gov. Janet Mills extended the proclamation of a Civil State of Emergency for Maine 30 days through August 6. This was her fourth extension of the proclamation.

Its important to note this is separate from the stay-at-home orderwell go into the details of that order laterand theyre separate directives. The proclamation simply allows the State to continue to draw critical Federal funds and gives the State the ability to deploy all available resources to respond to the coronavirus pandemic in Maine.

Under Maine law, State of Civil Emergency Proclamations may only be issued in thirty-day increments.

The statewide stay-at-home order was put into effect on April 2. It was later extended to May 31, but just before it expired the Governor put a new order in place that eased the stay-at-home restrictions. This order is in effect until its rescinded.

Heres an outline of the eased order:

The order issued on June 9 deals with travelers coming into Maine. It says that all those who travel to Maine from other states, other than New Hampshire and Vermont, must either: have a negative COVID-19 test or quarantine for 14-days upon arrival. Effective July 1, tourists will have to sign a certificate of compliance when they check into a hotel, motel, or other lodging confirming that they've had a COVID-19 test within the previous 72-hours and that it was negative.

On July 1 Mills expanded this exemption to include New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut.

An Executive Order was signed in April requiring face coverings in public places where physical distancing is difficult to maintain. Mills signed a new order on Wednesday, July 8 that strengthened the order already in place.

The order says large retail businesses, restaurants, outdoor bars, tasting rooms, and lodging establishments in Cumberland, Hancock, Knox, Lincoln, Sagadahoc, Waldo, and York counties, as well as the municipalities of Auburn, Augusta, Bangor, Brewer, and Lewiston must implement measures requiring customers to wear face coverings.

On Friday, July 17, Mills announced a series of steps her administration is taking to assist and support school systems across Maine as they consider whether and how to return to in-classroom instruction this fall.

The Maine Department of Education, in close partnership with the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention (Maine CDC), has updated its Framework for Returning to Classroom Instruction to include health and safety precautions that all schools must follow if they decide to return to in-classroom instruction to ensure the safety and well-being of students and staff.

The Governor also announced that these science-based protocols, which follow national best practices and include the use of face coverings and physical distancing, will be financially supported by up to $165 million in Federal CARES Act funding that she has authorized to be distributed to school systems across Maine.

The Maine Department of Education has yet to release a final plan on schools reopening in the fall.

Restarting Maine's Economy:

On June 22, Mills delayed the reopening of bars for indoor service across Maine. Bars have been able to reopen for outdoor service and were tentatively scheduled to reopen for indoor service on July 1 as part of Stage 3 of the Restarting Maine's Economy Plan.

The Mills administration says, however, that given the elevated health risk presented by bars, the timeline to allow indoor service is postponed "until further notice."

Restaurants in all counties were able to reopen for dine-in service on June 17.

State 1 (all counties): May

Construction, drive-in theaters, health care, outdoor recreation, personal services like dog grooming and hair salons, outdoor fitness classes, real estate, religious gatherings, car dealerships and car washes, and transportation.

Stage 1 (Rural counties): May/June

May 11: retail businesses

May 18: Restaurants for dine-in and outdoor service, campsites and sporting camps

June 12: Bars and tasting rooms (outdoor service only), Tattoo, Body Piercing, Electrolysis, and Micropigmentation Establishments

While previously limited to 10 people, group gatherings can now consist of up to 50 people (with physical distancing regulations still in place). Groups traveling in a vehicle should still consist only of people living in the same home. Employees in legal and professional fields may return to offices, including State employees, as needed.

List of services and business allowed to reopen under Stage 2:

Stage 3 maintains the prohibition on gatherings of more than 50 people and the 14-day quarantine or the alternative set out in the Keep Maine Healthy plan on people entering Maine. All businesses that have been open may remain open.

There is no set date for when bars and tasting rooms for dine-in service can reopen.

Other industries and businesses may reopen by following checklist standards.

Outdoor recreation:Overnight charter boats, excursions fewer than 50 people, and overnight summer Camps

The Governor and MaineHousing extended the Rent Relief Program that was put into place due to the coronavirus pandemic. The program, established in April, allows households that meet certain income and ability to pay requirements to receive a one-time, up to $500 payment in rental assistance to be paid directly to their landlord. With the extension, the program now covers rent for the months of April, May, or June.

The order also prevents the immediate eviction of tenants other than those who engage in dangerous or unlawful conduct for the duration of the state of emergency.

Gavin Rossdale talks new Bush album, upcoming concert livestream, fatherhood, pandemic & more – cleveland.com

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Amidst a pandemic, civil unrest and nasty political terrain, many are looking for a better world.

Count Bush's Gavin Rossdale among them. That's what he's writing and singing about on "The Kingdom," Bush's eighth album, which comes out Friday, July 17. Rossdale's viewpoint is utopian in some ways, ideological in others, and angry at times. It's the voice of an American by choice; Rossdale, who co-produced the album, was born and raised in London and moved to the U.S. after Bush's multi-platinum breakthrough during the mid-90s, marrying and having three sons with Gwen Stefani (the couple divorced in 2016).

Bush was planning to support "The Kingdom" -- whose "Bullet Holes" was featured in the film "John Wick: Chapter 3 -- Parabellum" -- on the road this summer with Breaking Benjamin, a trek that's been postponed until 2021. In the meantime he's doing what he can to get the word, and the music out, including a livestreamed concert on Saturday, July 18, while quarantining at home in California.

What did you setout to do with "The Kingdom?"

Rossdale: I was so excited about making a record. I wanted to do a record where every song could be slipped into the set, every song was a banging, huge, heavy-hitter, and it would be an irrefutable record. If the last record (2017's "Black and White Rainbows") could be bruised and dense, I wanted to make an irrefutable record about survival and strength and really falling into the whole Zeitgeist of now, a record that's the sign of the times.

Is it a sign of your own times as well?

Rossdale: The record was really about sort of emancipation and strength and resolve in the face of challenges. Getting divorced and death apparently are the two worst things that can happen to you; I didn't die, and I come through it and I live a different life and I'm grateful for the life I have. I probably should get a girlfriend so my kids can see me with a girl -- wouldn't that be nice? (laughs) But I don't want a different life, no.

"Flowers on a Grave," the latest single, certainly alludes to some dark times.

Rossdale: I always write about longing and desire and, yknow, empathy. The song I write is what Im looking for. Ive had one or two major girlfriends since I got divorced, and its so weird; When youve been divorced and you go back and fall in love with someone and they f*** you over as well...I guess I just had a sense of loneliness and loss, and theres Flowers on a Grave. But in my world, with my audience, it became like the soundtrack to their COVID, the whole thing about isolation. I wrote it before COVID, obviously, but its about feeling emotionally isolated, physically isolated, and people are using that in their own way. Thats what lyrics should do; They should be like a tint of paint, and people put them where they want in their own lives. I just make the colors nice.

It's interesting that so many of the songs on "The Kingdom" do connect directly with what's going on now -- kind of prescient, even?

Rossdale: (laughs) I wouldn't take credit for that, but I do feel like it could be a useful record for people, like the soundtrack to a peaceful protest. "The Kingdom" is meant to represent a place for like-minded people, a sanctuary away from the judgment, the self-righteous people, the racists, the homophobes -- all the people who are stunted in their thinking and that make the world a bad place and make it difficult for other people. I wanted a place where you could sort of share ideas and converse with people, so it was just sort of a utopia. The state of the country was really disjointed, and I was tapping into that.

The perspective is very American, coming from someone born and raised in Britain. How does that affect your outlook here?

Rossdale: Y'know,I love America. When I came to America, it gave me life. It's a land that gave me everything, so it really matters to me. I see America as, literally, the most beautiful land of opportunity, and I found my life here. I fell in love. My children are American. My ex-wife and the mother of my children is obviously American, and I'm always immensely grateful to her. So I'm very protective of (America). I love living here, and I Love this country. But, like anywhere, there's no society that cannot improve -- that's the nature of evolution, and 2020 has been an incredibly powerful, painful year but also the most incredible, beautiful chance for growth. You think of George Floyd's daughter and that wonderful footage of her saying, "Daddy changed the world." My goodness, if this could be a better place, thank goodness for that.

You spoke about wanting "The Kingdom" to hit hard, musically. It certainly has the feel of what we'd call a "classic" Bush album.

Rossdale: It's funny to say "classic Bush" because, actually, it's the most aggressive Bush. I've never done an entire record of detuned guitars, never, but somehow it seems to be punching on the nose in ways that maybe is consistent with earlier stuff. It was just me experimenting with lots of different tunings. All these metal bands or rock bands -- like Slipknot, which is an incredible band -- are playing with very low tunings to make the sound very dark and wide, so I would get into those things and go to work and tune a guitar a different way and see what it sounded like. It's just amazing to find yourselves in these very deep, dark tunings. It's quite difficult to find a melody. It's a challenge. It takes a minute.

In lieu of concerts will you make more videos to promote "The Kingdom?"

Rossdale: We did one for "Bullet Holes" and one for "Flowers on the Grave," and we're about to shoot one for "The Kingdom." That's pretty unusual. Back in the day we'd do five videos for an album, when people would buy albums -- but now no one buys them. So it's hard to expect anyone to overly spend on a big video, but I am looking forward to doing a video for the next song.

So what have you been doing with your down time?

Rossdale: I'm trying to keep the focus on the record coming out, but I had my kids, so keeping them occupied and letting them have some fun. I'm a single dad, just living the dream. And playing a lot of guitar and reading some good books -- all the usual stuff. And looking forward to when we can get out there and do some more.

Spot the International Space Station passing overhead on Tuesday night – Digital Trends

If you live on the East Coast or in the southeast of the United States and the skies are clear tonight, stick your head out the window and theres a good chance youll see the International Space Station passing overhead.

The unique spectacle will last a whole six minutes, and thanks to the bright reflection of the sun on the exterior of the station, you dont need any special kit to see it. NASA says its easy to spot, describing it as looking like a very bright star moving across the sky.

Check out the graphic in the tweet below for precise information on when itll be passing over your neighborhood.

Orbiting Earth at an altitude of around 250 miles, the space station is currently home to five astronauts, including NASAs Chris Cassidy, Doug Hurley, and Bob Behnken. Hurley and Behnken arrived at the end of May aboard the Crew Dragon in what was SpaceXs first ever astronaut launch, as well as the first crewed launch from U.S. soil since the end of the space shuttle program in 2011. Behnken and Cassidy have been busy performing several spacewalks in recent weeks, with another one planned for Thursday, July 16.

Pentagon readies launch of its OWN manned space station – Daily Express

US military HQ The Pentagon has commissioned the development of a space station to carry out important experimental work, as the dawn of a new space race arrives. The new station, which will be built by the Sierra Nevada Corporation (SNC), will assist the Federal government with training and operational space missions.

The cutting-edge aerospace company announced the deal on last week in conjunction with the Defense Innovation Unit (DIU) but refused to disclose the top-secret project's cost.

DIU, which has headquarters in the Pentagon, has a mission to "accelerating the adoption of leading commercial technology throughout the military".

Industry insiders believe the SNC attempt to modify existing plans for its 15ft (10m)-long Shooting Star space cargo transport vehicle rather than going back to the drawing board.

The newly-commissioned Unmanned Orbital Outpost will complement the Shooting Star project in development since 2016 for NASA's Commercial Resupply Services (CRS) program to deliver cargo to the International Space Station (ISS).

Announcing the project SNC's CEO Fatih Ozmen said in a statement: "Were excited by the multi-mission nature of Shooting Star."

"It was originally developed for NASA resupply missions to the International Space Station, and since then we keep identifying new capabilities and solutions it offers to a wide variety of customers.

"The possible applications for Shooting Star are really endless."

"The current Shooting Star is already designed with significant capabilities for an orbital outpost and by adding only a few components we are able to meet Department of Defense needs."

Steve Lindsey, Senior Vice President of strategy for SNCs Space Systems business area, who is also a retired US Air Force pilot and former NASA space shuttle commander, added: "We are proud to offer our transport vehicle to DoD as a free-flying destination for experimentation and testing, expanding beyond its current payload service capabilities for Dream Chaser cargo missions."

DIU first announced its interest in a solution for a self-contained and free-flying orbital outpost," a little more than a year ago.

The small-scale space station could support space assembly, microgravity experimentation, logistics and storage, manufacturing, training, test and evaluation, hosting payloads, and other functions, the Defense Innovation Unit had said in a statement last month.

'Space assembly' and 'manufacturing refer to the potential future capability to assemble and service satellites and spacecraft in orbit around Earth.

This is something both the US military and US-based space agency NASA have long desired.

The outpost could consequently serve as a platform where these capabilities can be put to the test.

The Air Force has also publicly raised the possibility of using orbital platforms as logistics nodes.

A SNC press release said: "The proposed orbital outpost will be initially established in LEO with guidance, navigation and control for sustained free-flight operations to host payloads and support space assembly, microgravity, experimentation, logistics, manufacturing, training, test and evaluation."

This indicates the DIU remains interested in an orbital platform able of performing these and the other previously stated mission sets.

It added: "Future outposts may be based in a variety of orbits including, medium-Earth orbit, highly elliptical orbit, geosynchronous Earth orbits (GEO) to include GEO transfer orbits, and cislunar orbits."

The Trademark Trial and Appeal Board (TTAB) recently affirmed a decision by the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) denying the application of a mark for "hemp oil extracts sold as an integral component of dietary and nutritional supplements".(1)

In its decision, the USPTO had reasoned that the applicant's goods, which contained cannabidiol (CBD), were illegal under federal law specifically, the Food, Drug and Cosmetics Act (FDCA) and the Controlled Substances Act (CSA). The mark 'CW', written in standard characters, would serve to identify the applicant's brand, CW Hemp, as the source of the goods. The mark was to be placed on bottles of the applicant's hemp extract, advertised as a nutritional supplement to "promote mind and body wellness", offered in multiple flavours and recommended to be used in beverage recipes. The TTAB held that the goods' illegality was a consequence of their nature and intended use as a dietary supplement.

The CSA lists marijuana, defined as "all parts of the plant Cannabis sativa L", as a Schedule I controlled substance. The Agricultural Act of 2014 (the 2014 Farm Bill), which was subsequently expanded in 2018, created an 'industrial hemp' exception to the CSA's marijuana prohibition (known as the 'industrial hemp provision'). The industrial hemp provision allows for the growth and cultivation of the Cannabis sativa L plant with less than 0.3% tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) concentration for certain research purposes, as allowed under state law. While this provision allows for the growth of industrial hemp, it does not protect against the violation of other federal law for the illegal use of that hemp after cultivation.

The FDCA prohibits any food with a drug or biological substance additive from entering into commerce if it is the subject of a substantial clinical investigation that has been made public. Dietary supplements, which the 'CW' hemp oil extracts were advertised as, constitute food for the purposes of this statute. Hemp grown legally under the industrial hemp provision will nevertheless be deemed illegal if its use is found to violate the FDCA or another federal law. In other words, the use of CBD in food or dietary supplements will be deemed illegal under the FDCA as long as CBD remains the subject of a clinical investigation, regardless of whether the hemp was grown legally under the CSA exception. Illegal use will override legal cultivation.

The USPTO currently has a number of trademark applications pending in Class 5, which includes dietary supplements and pharmaceuticals involving CBD-related goods, which now are likely to be denied registration per the TTAB's decision. Accordingly, when making the decision to apply for a federal trademark, the nature and use of the CBD product in relation to federal law should be kept in mind. In addition, although it may be impossible to acquire a federal trademark registration for a CBD-related product, it may still be possible to obtain common law trademark protection and trademark registrations in various states. Applicants should seek competent counsel for additional guidance to register a trademark with the USPTO to ensure legal compliance.

Fruits, vegetables, legumes and pulses are sources of FODMAPs with certain ones being higher than others.

These fermentable fibres are not absorbed by the body and stay intact through the small intestines to then act as a food source for the bacteria in the gut.

If youre looking to eat your way to better health, dont forget the spice cabinet. In particular, one vibrant yellow-orange spice called turmeric has garnered headlines for its apparent ability to supply a range of health benefits.

Turmeric is a popular spice, sometimes known as the golden spice, thats derived from the root of the turmeric plant, says Reema Kanda, a registered dietitian nutritionist with the Hoag Orthopedic Institute in Irvine, California. Part of the ginger family, turmeric hails from India and Southeast Asia and shows up frequently in cuisine from that region.

In addition to enhancing flavor and color, turmeric has long been revered for its therapeutic benefits. As such, its a key ingredient of certain Ayurvedic and Chinese medicines. These two eastern health practices have used turmeric for treatment of pain and inflammatory disorders for centuries, Kanda explains.

Health Benefits

More recently, western medicine has started to study this spice to better understand its benefits because it seems there really could be something to using turmeric for a variety of health benefits, including:

Inflammation: reducing systemic inflammation and increasing the bodys ability to resist the effect of free radicals, chemical compounds that essentially age cells and can contribute to the development of chronic diseases.

Arthritis: relieving joint pain associated with arthritis. The Natural Medicine Database reports that taking 500 milligrams of turmeric two to four times daily for four to twelve weeks can help ease symptoms that accompany osteoarthritis, Kanda says.

Many types of cancer thrive on inflammation throughout the whole body, and theres a growing body of evidence that suggests turmeric might one day be used as not just a prevention, but also a treatment for cancer.

Turmeric has prebiotic-like properties, which enable it to positively influence gut microbiota, supporting the gut-immune connection, says Acacia Wright, a registered dietitian at Orgain, a clean protein brand based in Irvine, California. How Turmeric Works

Turmeric provides a solid dose of phytochemicals plant compounds that help fight inflammation and oxidative stress, or the daily wear-and-tear our bodies endure every day. In addition, this spice contains plenty of vitamin C, which can boost the immune system, and is a good source of manganese, iron and potassium.

But when it comes to health benefits, turmerics biggest selling point is its hallmark compound: curcumin.

Research has indicated that curcumin may play a protective role in fighting inflammatory disease by helping reduce the bodys inflammatory response to everything from food and drink to stress and pollution. Kanda says this is important because chronic inflammation promotes many disease states, including:

Obesity.

Diabetes.

Cardiovascular disease.

Neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimers disease and other forms of dementia.

Inflammatory bowel diseases, such as Crohns disease and ulcerative colitis.

Certain types of cancers, including colon cancer.

Arthritis.

Depression.

Asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and other chronic lung diseases.

Allergies.

Autoimmune disorders.

Evidence supports that phytochemicals from natural foods such as spices and herbs are safe and effective therapies to potentially help reduce inflammation and can possibly be beneficial in prevention of inflammatory diseases, Kanda says, though she adds that further large-scale scientific evidence is still warranted to identify turmerics long-term effectiveness.

Supplement Considerations

Overall, it seems that turmeric is a great spice to add to your cooking and possibly even as a supplement though many nutritionists, dietitians and doctors agree that its generally better to get all your nutritional needs met via whole foods rather than relying on supplements.

However, Kanda notes that research into the health benefits and potential risks of turmeric is still evolving. More work needs to be done until we know for certain how turmeric works, what the right dose is to prevent or treat certain conditions and whether there are any long-term drawbacks to using turmeric for health reasons.

One difficulty with turmeric is establishing how much of the curcumin is actually bioavailable, or able to be used by the body. Most of the compound is excreted in feces and only traces appear in the blood, Kanda notes. What this means is more research is needed for identifying methods in improving the bioavailability by various delivery systems into the body.

One thing that is known is that piperine, black peppers signature compound, can boost absorption of turmeric by 2000% according to some research. If youre opting for a curcumin supplement, choose one that also contains piperine, which is often sold under the name BioPerine.

Kanda notes that if youre supplementing with turmeric, be aware that some people who have consumed high levels of turmeric extracts have reported some mild side effects including stomach upset, dizziness or diarrhea. If you have anemia or low levels of iron, you should probably not be taking high doses of turmeric as it may inhibit the absorption of iron from your diet.

And if youre going to have surgery, consider skipping the turmeric supplement for a while beforehand, as high doses of turmeric supplements have been associated with slower blood clotting. This could cause more bleeding during and after surgery.

As with all things related to supplements, be sure to speak with your doctor before you start taking anything to make sure there are no adverse interactions with other medications or supplements you may be taking and to make sure that supplementation makes sense for you.

Cooking With Turmeric

While science is still working out the particulars of supplementation, Kanda says we can all reap the benefits of turmeric by using whole or ground dried turmeric in cooking. Try adding it to poultry, seafood and lentil-based dishes to enhance color and as a flavor accent. You can sprinkle it in any dish along with your other favorite seasonings, such as thyme, cumin or garlic. And if you enjoy mixing marinades, try adding turmeric.

You can also add it to healthy drinks such as smoothies or teas. Golden milk is a delicious mixture of milk and turmeric that also provides protein and calcium.

Tropical Turmeric SmoothieWant a tropical turmeric treat? Kanda offers the following mango turmeric smoothie recipe thats easy and delicious:

1/3 cup plain yogurt.

1/3 cup almond milk.

1/2 inch peeled, fresh ginger root.

1/2 inch peeled turmeric root (substitute with 1 teaspoon turmeric powder if you cannot find fresh turmeric).

1 roasted golden beet (peeled).

3/4 cup frozen mango.
