Wireless steerable vision for live insects and insect-scale robots – Science

Vision serves as an essential sensory input for insects but consumes substantial energy resources. The cost to support sensitive photoreceptors has led many insects to develop high visual acuity in only small retinal regions and evolve to move their visual systems independent of their bodies through head motion. By understanding the trade-offs made by insect vision systems in nature, we can design better vision systems for insect-scale robotics in a way that balances energy, computation, and mass. Here, we report a fully wireless, power-autonomous, mechanically steerable vision system that imitates head motion in a form factor small enough to mount on the back of a live beetle or a similarly sized terrestrial robot. Our electronics and actuator weigh 248 milligrams and can steer the camera over 60 based on commands from a smartphone. The camera streams first person 160 pixelsby120 pixels monochrome video at 1 to 5 frames per second (fps) to a Bluetooth radio from up to 120 meters away. We mounted this vision system on two species of freely walking live beetles, demonstrating that triggering image capture using an onboard accelerometer achieves operational times of up to 6 hours with a 10milliamp hour battery. We also built a small, terrestrial robot (1.6 centimeters by 2 centimeters) that can move at up to 3.5 centimeters per second, support vision, and operate for 63 to 260 minutes. Our results demonstrate that steerable vision can enable object tracking and wide-angle views for 26 to 84 times lower energy than moving the whole robot.

Kitchen robots are a popular vision of the future, but if a robot of today tries to grasp a kitchen staple such as a clear measuring cup or a shiny knife, it likely wont be able to. Transparent and reflective objects are the things of robot nightmares.

Roboticists at Carnegie Mellon University, however, report success with a new technique theyve developed for teaching robots to pick up these troublesome objects. The technique doesnt require fancy sensors, exhaustive training or human guidance, but relies primarily on a color camera. The researchers will present this new system during this summers International Conference on Robotics and Automation virtual conference.

David Held, an assistant professor in CMUsRobotics Institute, said depth cameras, which shine infrared light on an object to determine its shape, work well for identifying opaque objects. But infrared light passes right through clear objects and scatters off reflective surfaces. Thus, depth cameras cant calculate an accurate shape, resulting in largely flat or hole-riddled shapes for transparent and reflective objects.

But a color camera can see transparent and reflective objects as well as opaque ones. So CMU scientists developed a color camera system to recognize shapes based on color. A standard camera cant measure shapes like a depth camera, but the researchers nevertheless were able to train the new system to imitate the depth system and implicitly infer shape to grasp objects. They did so using depth camera images of opaque objects paired with color images of those same objects.

Once trained, the color camera system was applied to transparent and shiny objects. Based on those images, along with whatever scant information a depth camera could provide, the system could grasp these challenging objects with a high degree of success.

We do sometimes miss, Held acknowledged, but for the most part it did a pretty good job, much better than any previous system for grasping transparent or reflective objects.

The system cant pick up transparent or reflective objects as efficiently as opaque objects, said Thomas Weng, a Ph.D. student in robotics. But it is far more successful than depth camera systems alone. And the multimodal transfer learning used to train the system was so effective that the color system proved almost as good as the depth camera system at picking up opaque objects.

Our system not only can pick up individual transparent and reflective objects, but it can also grasp such objects in cluttered piles, he added.

Other attempts at robotic grasping of transparent objects have relied on training systems based on exhaustively repeated attempted grasps on the order of 800,000 attempts or on expensive human labeling of objects.

The CMU system uses a commercial RGB-D camera thats capable of both color images (RGB) and depth images (D). The system can use this single sensor to sort through recyclables or other collections of objects some opaque, some transparent, some reflective.

In addition to Held and Weng, the research team included Oliver Kroemer, assistant professor of robotics at CMU; Amith Pallankize, a senior at BITS Pilani in India; and Yimin Tang, a senior at ShanghaiTech. The National Science Foundation, Sony Corporation, the Office of Naval Research, Efort Intelligent Equipment Co. and ShanghaiTech supported this research.

A fruit picking robot scheme led by Saga Robotics in Lincoln will receive nearly 2.5 million as part of a new UK government funding initiative to drive efficiency in food production.

The Robot Highways project aims to act as a catalyst for a sustainable farming industry in the future by maintaining or even boosting food production, counteracting labour shortages and limiting the environmental impact.

Innovate UK awarded the 2.5m funding to a group consisting of Saga Robotics, global leaders in robotics and autonomous systems (RAS), the University of Lincoln (Europes largest academic research centre on agri-robotics), University of Reading (knowledge exchange and economic evaluation specialists), Manufacturing Technology Centre Limited, Berry Gardens Growers, BT, and Clock House Farm Ltd.

By 2025, the consortium aims to deliver a fleet of robots that can carry out a host of farming operations as one, entirely powered by solar energy.

Initially focusing on soft fruit farming, the project is also targeting a 20% reduction in food wastage, a 90% drop in fungicide use and a significant drop in carbon emissions, all while increasing productivity by 15%.

Kiwi’s Delivery Robots Roll Onto the Streets of San Jose, CA – The Spoon

Kiwi announced today that its rover robots are now delivering food and other items around two areas in San Jose, CA. According to Kiwi, what makes this rollout unique is that the company has partnered with the city itself to help mitigate deployment and maintenance issues that come with robots scurrying around city sidewalks.

Starting today, a squad of 25 robots will be making deliveries in the downtown area and Buena Vista neighborhoods of San Jose. As many as 120 businesses will be participating in the program.

Kiwi is also working with the city of San Jose to help with the management of the roaming robots. Kiwi Co-Founder and CEO, Felipe Chvez, told me by phone last week that previously, if a robot got stuck or broke down (or caught fire), someone would have to notify the city, which would then notify the company operating the robot. The company would then have to dispatch someone to take care of the issue, and the whole process could take a long time.

Chvez said what Kiwi has done is basically plugged into a citywide system. All of Kiwis robots are now displayed on a city dashboard so if one accidentally stops and blocks a curb, officials knows exactly where it is and can alert Kiwi right away.

As part of todays announcement, Kiwi also said that it now has partnerships with Shopify and Ordermark. This allows businesses and restaurants with accounts with either of those services to easily add Kiwis robots to their delivery rosters.

Robots have become a more common means of delivery over the last few months. The pandemic has pushed restaurants and other businesses to adopt contactless delivery procedures, which Kiwi provides. Users order from participating restaurants on their phones select robot delivery and use their phones to unlock the robot cargo compartment when it arrives.

Additionally, robot delivery is just $3.99 per order, which the restaurant can pass on to the consumer. Four bucks to bring a burrito to your feet isnt that bad, and there are no pesky third-party commissions eating further into a restaurants margins (or adding that much to a customers bill).

With the pandemic still raging across the country and restaurants being forced to close down again, robotic delivery can also help keep restaurant sales going, which provide much needed sales tax revenue for cities.

The bigger story here, however, might be how Kiwi has pivoted and adapted. When we first covered Kiwi, the company was focused college campus delivery, and was creating its own marketplace of restaurants that required downloading the Kiwi app to use.

First off, colleges shut down, all but eliminating campuses as an avenue for delivery. Starship, which had a number of high-profile college partnerships, had to make a similar municipal pivot.

But Kiwi is a robotics company, so building robots and a consumer marketplace was a big undertaking. So at the beginning of the year the company shifted to its current B2B model. Kiwi has also since the beginning of this year had a partnership with Latin American delivery service Rappi. Since pivoting, Chvez said Kiwi has booked 50 times more revenue than all of last year.

San Jose is just the beginning for Kiwi, as Chavez said that the company has two more high-profile partnerships that he cant announce yet and the company is in the process of building 500 robots. Kiwi will release them in squads of 25 to different locations, with two humans managing and maintaining each squad.

To understand the world at the scale of a bug, a team of scientists decided to see like one.

By studying the way insects eyes and head movements, they created a tiny robotic camera to ride on a beetles back. In a study published Wednesday in Science Robotics, researchers explain how their work tests the limits of miniature cameras.

Essentially a GoPro for beetles, the device is a fully wireless, power-autonomous, mechanically steerable vision system, the researchers write. The camera sits atop a robotic arm that can move up to 60 degrees and capture panoramic shots or track moving objects.

"Vision is so important for communication and for navigation, but it's extremely challenging to do it at such a small scale. As a result, prior to our work, wireless vision has not been possible for small robots or insects, University of Washington engineer Shyam Gollakota, senior author, tells Sarah McQuate of University of Washington News.

The camera is extremely lightweight, measuring about 250 milligrams, or around one-tenth the weight of a playing card, according to Rob Picheta of CNN.

Vision for insects can demand high amounts of energy, so many develop systems in which the head moves independently of the body. So, instead of having advanced peripheral vision which requires lots of energy, the bug simply turns its head for a higher resolution look.

The researchers camera mimics insect head movement to cut down on energy usage and maintain balance. The tiny camera is attached to a mechanical arm that scientists can steer to direct the camera at a certain object, or to get a wider view. This way, the shot is higher resolution than it would be if the camera had an energy-sapping, wide-angle lens.

By combining these two different things living animals with sensors youre basically getting the best of both worlds, Gollakota tells Donna Lu of New Scientist.

The camera is powered by a lithium polymer battery and can stream continuously for over an hour. Scientists can also program the camera to only capture footage when the beetle is moving, as sensed with an accelerometer, increasing battery life up to six hours. For future versions, researchers are looking to use other power sources, CNN reports.

The camera captures monochromatic first-person footage at a resolution of 160-by-120 pixels, at a rate or between one and five frames per second. The video is transmitted via Bluetooth to a smartphone and can be controlled from up to 120 meters away, or just over the length of a football field, according to UW News.

For this test, two species of beetles were outfitted: the death-feigning beetle (asbolus laevis) and the pinacate bettle (Eleodes nigrina). Researchers reported all the test beetles remained alive a year after the experiment.

There is currently no way to control the beetles movement. But researchers are hoping that they can outfit many more beetles to more thoroughly map environments.

As they spread out you can collect enough information that you dont need to control the insects, Gollakota tells New Scientist.

The camera could be used to explore and map remote environments or help biologists understand movement in certain terrains.

"There are so many questions you could explore, such as how does the beetle respond to different stimuli that it sees in the environment?" co-lead author Vikram Iyer tells UW News. "But also, insects can traverse rocky environments, which is really challenging for robots to do at this scale. So, this system can also help us out by letting us see or collect samples from hard-to-navigate spaces."

Creating such a powerful camera that is so light and virtually undetectable raises questions about the implications for covert surveillance. The scientists acknowledge the privacy concerns.

"As researchers we strongly believe that it's really important to put things in the public domain so people are aware of the risks and so people can start coming up with solutions to address them," Gollakota tells CNN.

In addition to the camera-laden beetles, the team developed a small robot with steerable vision that allows them to track objects with 26 to 84 times lower energy than moving the whole robot. Their work could provide a key step in making more functional miniature robots.

"We soon realised that we were going to have to move 250,000 people within three days ... to work from home."

Accenture used bots and AI to determine whether staff could work from home effectively as well as to help streamline workloads during COVID-19.

"Previously it would require a human to decide where to route those problems and what we've found now is that AI can take over that role extremely accurately and be able to start to augment and route the workload across our workforce and we're using that a lot right now to be able to balance the workload across various teams," Mr Higgins said.

Vanessa Sulikowski from Cisco predicts artificial intelligence could come to play a hugely beneficial role in the post-pandemic workplace.

"So areas like health and safety, wellness, personal productivity, engagement, inclusiveness and nurturing talent," she said.

"How can AI technology assist us in these areas now that we will all be working distributed and working across different workspaces?"

AI may also have a role to play in helping to ensure staff feel safe when they return to the workplace, such as determining if rooms need cleaning, helping to adhere to social distancing guidelines or voice technology as part of contactless office solutions.

Dr Sue Keay, from CSIRO's Data 61, told the panel there had been a surge in demand for AI solutions and robotics technologies to give companies an edge during the pandemic.

"Mainly to increase efficiency but also to capture data and to help with better decision-making," she said.

"This is something I think we really need to grasp with both hands and try and make the most of this opportunity."

But it was vital employers supported workers in using or upskilling in such technology so "it can augment their potential rather than being seen as a threat".

AI could also help boost productivity or determine how engaged an employee is, according to Ms Sulikowski.

"Using metadata to determine what it is you actually focus on: what messages do you respond to most quickly, who are the people you work with frequently, what are the meetings you never miss and what are you ignoring," she said.

"It can determine if my communication habits have changed, and my gestures and tone and sentiment is different. Am I potentially lonely? Is that a signal for my manager to check in?"

Research by NBN Co found that 81 per cent of Australians who have been working from home reported it has been a positive experience.

"It's unquestionable that we're on the very verge of a very profound change to the way Australians live and work," Kathrine Dyer, from NBN Co, told the Future Briefing on Tuesday.

Figures from NBN Co reveal workers have been using 70 per cent of data during the day and during peak period, downloads have increased by up to 32 per cent compared with pre-COVID-19.

The team also looked at what would happen if the level of social distancing dropped further, and it wasnt good. In most scenarios, the need for critical-care hospital beds to treat people afflicted with COVID-19 would exceed the number of such beds the states health care system could provide. Thousands more people could die if the state didnt maintain enough social distancing, officials said then.

The lowest level of social distancing the research team contemplated in April? 45%.

Thats what makes the teams latest report which was released last week and apparently helped persuade Gov. Jared Polis to issue a statewide mask mandate so bracing. In short, even though Coloradans are moving around more than at any time since the pandemic started, the state could be as little as six weeks away from running out of critical-care hospital beds to treat COVID-19 patients and others who need them. If nothing changes, the modeling teams projections show peak hospital demand hitting in mid-October when there would be roughly 6,200 people in need of a critical-care bed about 4,400 more people than the states hospital system can handle.

The data is beginning to be alarming, Polis said last week when announcing the mask mandate.

Here are nine more charts that show just how alarming it is:

The key to predicting the spread of COVID-19 isnt really the level of social distancing taking place. Its the virus reproduction number, also known as R0 (pronounced R-naught). Thats the average number of people that each infected person passes the virus onto.

If the R0 is 1, the virus spreads linearly. One person leads to one additional case, which leads to another additional case. The virus spreads, but in a tidy, controlled, slow fashion. This is what it looks like over 10 generations of spread:

If the R0 is below 1, new cases decline over time. The virus fizzles out because not enough people are catching it to keep it alive.

During the stay-at-home period, Colorado achieved this feat, with the R0 dipping to near 0.5 and the virus in decline, according to the modeling teams estimates.

But since the stay-at-home order ended, the R0 has been on the rise. It crossed back over 1 in late June, hit around 1.2 in the first week of July and now may be as high as 1.8, according to the teams latest report.

The R0 is not as high as it was earlier in the year in Colorado, when it was perhaps as high as 5. But an R0 of 1.7 still means the state is experiencing exponential growth of the virus.

To provide a sense of what an R0 of 1.7 means, we calculated out 10 generations of case growth. Starting with just a single case in the first generation, the total number of cases rises to more than 280 by the 10th generation.

Heres what that looks like, using the same scale as the chart above:

These generations could turn over quickly, too.

The average incubation time between when someone is infected with the novel coronavirus and when they start showing symptoms is five to six days. But people can be contagious one to three days before showing symptoms.

So its entirely possible to get through 10 generations of spread within a months time. And that shows why, though everything may seem pretty mellow now, the situation can worsen rapidly with an R0 even just slightly above 1.

Heres another way of visualizing how fast that spread can occur with an R0 of 1.7. (We did some rounding to the nearest whole number to make this visualization work. Heres the chart this animation comes from.)

Until a couple weeks ago, a chart plotting COVID-19 hospitalizations over time in Colorado looked like a rather dramatic mogul rising quickly and then dropping off almost as fast. Now, though, it looks like a ski jump, with hospitalizations rising back to a level not seen since May.

Likewise, last week ended with the most new cases of COVID-19 reported to the state since late April.

So far, deaths due to COVID-19 have not shown a rebound in Colorado. But they also tend to lag behind some of these other warning signs by as much as a month. And other states where epidemics resurged sooner than in Colorado are now beginning to see rising death tolls.

This is the really alarming thing about the new modeling projections from the Colorado researchers. If social distancing levels dont change, the state will exceed its critical-care hospital bed capacity by Sept. 3 and will stay above capacity for a solid two months.

There are roughly 1,800 critical-care hospital beds in the state. But, by Oct. 16, the model predicts 6,200 people will be in need of such a bed. And that could prompt hospitals to implement their crisis standards of care, which will decide who gets a bed and who doesnt. (Its worth noting that these estimates of bed need are for the number of people who might need one for any reason heart attack, stroke, car crash and not only those who will need one due to COVID-19.)

And, as that chart also shows, even if Coloradans start staying home more, theres no guarantee that we will keep COVID-19 cases low enough to overwhelm hospitals. Instead, we need to get back to around 65% social distancing to avoid exceeding critical-care bed capacity. Thats roughly the level of social distancing we had in early June, according to the modeling team.

And theres one group that needs to hear this message more than others, frankly. The resurgence in cases has largely been driven by people under 40 years old. That group now accounts for nearly 60% of new infections and a quarter of hospitalizations.

But, whatever your age, the data in Colorado are becoming increasingly clear. The sun may be out. But, as much as you can, you need to stay in.

The good news, Polis said last week, is there is time, there is time to act. To the extent that theres been a party the last week or two, the party has to end.

What A COVID-19 Patient At Home Needs From Family And Friends : Goats and Soda – NPR

The best laid plans of coronavirus caregivers can go kaflooey.

When Marie Loveheim was recovering from COVID-19, alone in her apartment in Washington, D.C., she didn't have a thermometer. So her son bought her one.

It registered a fever of 107.

"Was I dead?" she wondered.

Thermometer number two came from her daughter, who ordered it as part of a grocery delivery from a supermarket.

But what came was a meat thermometer. Lovenheim's sister suggested she check to see if she measured "medium-rare."

When a loved one gets sick, our gut response kicks in like second nature: Provide as much care and comfort as possible. Send a thermometer, a soup, you pick: It feels like a no-brainer.

But how do you care for a loved one struck by a fast-spreading virus that means it's high risk to have face-to-face contact with a patient lest you get sick yourself?

NPR spoke to medical professionals and COVID-19 recoverees about the trial and error of caregiving: What works, what doesn't and what might provide hope and humor even at the unlikeliest of moments.

To begin, there are the practical considerations.

Dr. Paul Sax, clinical director of the Division of Infectious Diseases at Brigham and Women's Hospital, says if a loved one has COVID-19, the first step is home isolation. If possible, the infected family member should remain quarantined in a separate room where they will eat and sleep, and they should use a separate bathroom.

It's OK to go into the infected party's room to drop off food, Sax advises, but both the patient and the caregiver should wear a mask, and if possible, an inexpensive plastic face shield or lab goggles to cover your eyes in addition to your nostrils and mouth eyes are a potential entry point for the virus.

For milder cases, at-home treatment largely addresses the symptoms.

"Given that we don't have any verified therapy that we can give people early on in the course, our main management is focused on symptomatic relief for coughs, fevers, muscle pains and the like," says Harvard Medical School physician Dr. Abraar Karan. "Over-the-counter Tylenol for fevers and pain, or anti-cough medications are both options for people who don't have significant medical conditions that would prevent them from taking these medications."

Sax says it's a good idea to go into your loved one's room three or four times a day, say hi and see how they're doing. It's "completely fine" to prepare food for them; just make sure to wash the dishes and your hands afterward with soapy water. You should check temperatures twice a day and expect a higher number in the afternoon than early morning.

Another helpful tool is a pulse oximeter, which can be used to measure oxygen levels. Look for numbers in the high 90s to 100s when monitoring your loved one. A number in the low 90s is alarming, Sax and Karan say, and if those are the results you're noticing, seek medical attention for your loved one. But you shouldn't be falsely reassured by good numbers either, medical experts warnand there are some noted problems with getting good readings to begin with.

Dr. James Aisenberg, a gastroenterologist and clinical professor of medicine at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, was diagnosed with COVID-19 in March and has since recovered. For him, it was important to keep the communication flowing with his physician and keep meticulous notes on his condition and recovery progress.

"The caregiver should have a physician or a health-care contact whom they can email because it's a bumpy and long recovery process," Aisenberg says. "It's very helpful to have someone to reach out to for reassurance and counsel who knows the natural history of the coronavirus infection, who can say 'That's a red flag, come to the hospital'."

Sax says that at home, there are some clear things to watch out for when it comes to symptoms: if your loved one has a harder time breathing, if fever is spiking (especially in older people), if there's delirium or signs of dehydration like fatigue, dizziness or overly-yellow urine.

Because the recovery process is slow, taxing and done in isolation, Aisenberg says it was important for him to find nourishing moments of human connection with family between the stretches of alone time.

"You want to be together in a moment where you cannot touch each other; to be close at a moment where you can't physically be close," he notes. "Because both parties the patient and the family need that closeness. So the most important thing for a caregiver is to be "attentive, supportive and presentbut observe social distancing (at least 6 feet even with a mask on) and hygiene."

Though it may be hard to physically connect while you have the virus, our sources who'd coped with COVID-19 found moments of joy in video chats, phone calls and other expressions of love and care, from cards to homemade soup to gifts of food and flowers.

Dr. Jasmine Eugenio, a pediatrician in Los Angeles, California, who recovered from COVID-19, says she was brought to tears when people drove past her bedroom window to wave hello. And when she got a mango, it was an epiphany!

"I lost my sense of taste until Day 6 when I asked for a mango and the taste exploded in my mouth," Eugenio says. That led her to fresh fruit and popsicles.

Dr. Madhuri Reddy, a geriatrician at Harvard Medical School and Hebrew SeniorLife, stresses it's important for caregivers to take care of themselves too,

"Be easy on yourself," says Reddy. "This is a difficult time for everybody and caretakers provide such an immense service."

Google Coronavirus Apps Give it Way to Access Location Data – The New York Times

Some Android users in Europe say they feel misled by their governments. Instructions on many of the apps direct Android users to turn on location, for instance, but make no mention of Google or that users can stop the company from determining their precise locations by turning off the accuracy feature within the location setting.

With this app, youre invited, by the government strongly appealing to your sense of responsibility and morality, to give away your live location to entities that are getting a profit out of it, in order to protect public health, said Massimo Zannoni, an electronic engineer in Zurich.

Health officials in Denmark, Germany, Latvia and Switzerland said their governments had deliberately designed their national virus alert apps for maximum privacy.

No government, no security agency has any chance to misuse the technology, Gottfried Ludewig, director general for digitalization and innovation for Germanys Ministry of Health, said of the Corona-Warn-App, which has been downloaded more than 15.5 million times. He said more than 500 people who tested positive for the virus had used the app to notify other users of possible virus exposure.

He added that if Google used location data for any other purpose than enabling the Bluetooth services in the app, it would need legal grounds to do so under European data protection law.

Others involved in the German app said it was Googles issue, not theirs.

You need to ask Google about the specs of their operating system, Marcus Winkler, a spokesman for SAP, which helped develop Germanys app, said in an email. If you turn on location tracking you get a message from the operating system this has nothing to do with the app.

Professor Dmitrienko, the software security expert, said the solution was for governments to push Google to stop requiring Android users of the virus alert apps to turn on location.

Duchess Meghan has more freedom to speak "from the heart" on topics such as racial injustice and gender, since she is no longer a senior royal.

The 38-year-old royal - who stepped down from her royal role earlier this year, along with her husband Prince Harry, and moved to Los Angeles - is carving out a new career as a public speaker and Meghan can now give "punchier" speeches as she is not constrained by royal protocol.

Speaking on the 'Heirpod' podcast, Omid Scobie, author of 'Finding Freedom: Harry and Meghan, and the Making of a Modern Royal Family', said: "[The Girl Up Leadership Summit speech] was Meghan really being able to talk without the constraints of some of the things you might have to bear in mind when writing a speech as a working member of the royal family.

"I understand she spent a long time preparing for this speech. Usually we see members of the royal family reading from very tight scripts when they go up onto a stage, I understand Meghan had bullet points.

"She was perhaps a little punchier than we've seen in the past. She spoke more from the heart than from a script."

And Scobie revealed that Meghan's recent speech for the Girl Up Leadership Summit was a sign of what fans can expect of her in the future.

He explained: "I had an interesting conversation with Team Sussex after this happened. They said this speech really spoke to many of the issues she will continue to focus on passionately moving forward, gender equity, racial injustice, youth empowerment...

"This worked as a really great preview for the Duchess of Sussex and some of her future speaking engagements."

Meghan and Harry, 35, have joined the Harry Walker Agency and will be available to give talks on social issues such as racial justice, gender equality, the environment and mental health, according to the LA Times.
