Someone Just Sold Apollo 11’s Joysticks, Against NASA’s Wishes

Three historic joysticks used to control NASA's Apollo 11 command module have just sold for more than $780,000 at an auction, going against NASA's wishes.

Ground Control

Three historic joysticks used to control NASA’s Apollo 11 command module, Columbia, just sold for more than $780,000 at an auction over the weekend — against the wishes of the space agency itself, as Space.com reports.

An official description on the auction house’s website advertised the sale as including “some of the most important pieces used in space exploration including the actual pilot control stick used by Neil Armstrong on the Apollo 11 flight to the moon.”

The command module, piloted by Michael Collins, flew the Apollo 11 lunar module to orbit around the Moon, with pilots Buzz Aldrin and Neil Armstrong inside.

Bidding War

The joysticks themselves were used to control Columbia when docking with the lunar module Eagle. They were initially offered to the three astronauts months after mission completion, but the crew refused the gifts, according to Space.com.

A NASA employee discovered the three joysticks decades later at the Johnson Space Center in Houston and took them home, Collect Space reports. The employee then sold them at auction to a collector.

In 2013, one of the joysticks would’ve been sold at auction in Boston, but NASA made sure that didn’t happen, requesting to have the item donated to a museum instead. Three years later, NASA gave up.

A handrail used during extravehicular activity during the Apollo 11 mission also went on sale at an auction in 2000, selling for $34,500, according to Collect Space.

German Scientists Are Hosting a Concert to Study How COVID-19 Spreads

A team of German scientists are throwing a tightly-controlled concert in order to understand how COVID-19 can spread in large crowds.

In order to figure out how COVID-19 spreads among large groups, a team of German scientists decided to throw a big concert and, well, see what happens.

The concert experiment, dubbed RESTART-19, will involve a cohort of 4,000 volunteers acting out three concert scenarios, each with a different degree of mandated distancing between audience members and safety measures, in order to see what actually helps limit disease’s spread.

The idea is to host the kind of event that many are itching to get back to — and by identifying the specific risks of holding a concert, the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg scientists may be able to guide sports arenas or other large venues as they try to reopen as well.

The scientists can’t just put 4,000 concertgoers at risk of catching a deadly disease: According to the project’s website, all volunteers will be tested before and after the experiment, given a bottle of hand sanitizer, and will also have to wear masks the whole time.

But that’s the point of the whole thing. In each scenario — the third one will cut the audience size down to 2,000 — participants will be given a contact-tracing device that tracks how close they come to other volunteers. Also, that free bottle of hand sanitizer will be a special fluorescent formulation, so the scientists can use a UV light to see how many people touched various surfaces.

Ironically, the scientists already seem to have a pretty good grip on how to prevent the coronavirus from spreading. Many of the safety measures that the scientists are imposing — like only allowing people to take off their mask to eat or drink when they’re outside — would also help keep people safe during a real pandemic-era concert.

Criminal charges for undeclared Chinese research ties mount in the US – Chemistry World

The US Justice Department has charged another professor at an American university with committing research grant fraud to benefit China. Ohio State Universitys Song Guo Zheng used more than $4 million (3.2 million) in grant money from the US National Institutes of Health (NIH) to develop rheumatology and immunology expertise for the Chinese government, according to a criminal complaint unsealed following his 9 July detention hearing.

The 57-year-old Zheng has also allegedly been a participant in the Chinese governments Thousand Talents programme a scheme to recruit and cultivate high-profile scientists since 2013. He is charged with making false statements about maintaining employment in China at the same time he was working for US universities. Zheng, who was previously at the University of Southern California and Pennsylvania State University, faces up to 15 years in prison if convicted.

Zheng was arrested on 22 May at an airport in Alaska while preparing to board a flight to China. He had with him two laptops, three mobile telephones, several USB drives, several silver bars, expired Chinese passports for his family, as well as deeds for property in China, according to the Justice Department. Ohio State University spokesperson Ben Johnson says Zheng is currently on unpaid leave and that the university is proceeding towards termination. Zheng has been denied bail as he is considered a flight risk.

Yet again, we are faced with a professor at a US university, who is a member of a Chinese talent plan, allegedly and deliberately failing to disclose his relationship with a Chinese university and receipt of funds from the Chinese government in order to obtain millions of dollars in US grant money designed to benefit the health and well-being of the people of the US, said US assistant attorney general for national security, John Demers.

David DeVillers, US attorney for the Southern District of Ohio, said that this is his offices third recent case involving the illegal transfer of intellectual property and research to China.

A number of researchers in the US have faced similar charges in recent months, the most prominent being Charles Lieber, the former chair of Harvard Universitys Chemistry and Chemical Biology Department. He was indicted last month for making false statements to the authorities about his participation in the Thousand Talents programme.

Lieber allegedly concealed from both Harvard and the NIH his position as a strategic scientist at a Chinese university and the fact that the Chinese government was paying him, through the Wuhan University of Technology, a $50,000 monthly stipend, more than $150,000 in living expenses and more than $1.5 million to establish a laboratory in China. After his arrest in January, Lieber pleaded not guilty in June to two counts of making false statements.

Other lower-profile scientists have also been arrested over undeclared involvement in the Thousand Talents plan. In May, the Justice Department arrested Qing Wang, a former researcher with the Cleveland Clinic who worked on molecular medicine and the genetics of cardiovascular disease, and Simon Saw-Teong Ang, a University of Arkansas scientist conducting research for Nasa. Both were allegedly committing fraud by concealing their participation in Chinese talent recruitment programmes while accepting millions of dollars in American federal grant funding, said the director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Christopher Wray, during remarks earlier this month to the Hudson Institute, a conservative thinktank in Washington DC.

Other cases include those of former Emory University neuroscientist Xiao-Jiang Li who pled guilty to filing a fraudulent tax return in May after failing to report income hed received through the Thousand Talents programme. Wray said the FBIs investigation found that while Li was researching Huntingtons disease at Emory, he also received half a million dollars from China which he never reported. In March, James Patrick Lewis, who at the time was a physics professor at West Virginia University, pled guilty to defrauding his institution so that he could take leave to satisfy competing obligations to a Chinese one. He was a tenured professor at the university between 2006 and August 2019, and specialised in coal conversion technologies.

Data presented to the advisory committee to the NIH director in June revealed that 54 researchers have resigned or been fired as a result of the NIHs investigation into whether grant recipients are properly disclosing foreign ties. The report found that 133 grant recipients had an undisclosed foreign grant and 102 had an undisclosed talent award. Consequently, 77 of these researchers have been removed from the NIH system 41% of the 189 scientists who the agency investigated. Nearly all of those cases under review 93% involve Chinese funding.

Bitcoin never left the safe-haven club – AMBCrypto English

For many in the cryptocurrency space, a safe-haven is an egregious word. To be a safe-haven would imply that Bitcoin is not the only haven, to be a safe-haven would imply that Bitcoin is an unlikely option in a testing time, and would mean Bitcoin is still an outlier. No no, there is no place for safe haven in Bitcoins ascendance to becoming the only medium of exchange andstore of value, but contrary to the larger claim, Bitcoin in the here and now is a safe-haven.

Traditional safe-havens, for the global market, are broadly the US dollar and gold, with Bitcoin the clear outsider in the space. However, if you were to look at the way these three respective leaders of their own asset-classes played out, amid cash-hoarding fears, followed by liquidity flooded hope, there is a similarity between them.

Indeed, this similarity was brought to the fore by the rising correlation between Bitcoin and the S&P500., while the commodity ignored its peers. Owing to this rather surprising correlation, and the skewed movement of gold, a report from Ecoinometrics pointed to Bitcoin, not once again entering the fray of safe-haven assets, but never leaving the club in the first place.

The report tracked the price and correlation from February, an optimum pre-crash baseline, and here it is important to go chronologically and follow the crypto leader and equity index. When the liquidity crisis hit, everybody wanted the dollar-dollar bills, and they were willing to give up stocks held and coins hodled for it, as was evident by the S&P500 crash and cryptos Black Thursday, naturally, the correlation rose.

Once the bottom was found, the Federal Reserve kicked in with the printing and both assets began to rally,

Next the Fed put kicks in and the stock market starts to rally. Of course people also buy Bitcoin on the cheap at the same time. Simultaneous rally equals again high correlation.

Following the rally, fatigue sets in by June, post the BTC halving. Both the stock market and Bitcoin begin sideways movement, and the correlation dips down to normal levels. During this crash in volatility in Bitcoin, the cryptocurrency begins to see price action on the short term. With no long term price action, as expectations are skewed, volatility drops and correlation rises once again.

Now, halfway through July, the equity markets are moving up, while Bitcoins volatility is moving down. At this point, a Bitcoin breakout could have a two-fold effect,

A BTC breakout should trigger a rise in volatility and a drop in correlation [with the S&P500]

While the times are unique, the movement of Bitcoin and the S&P500 is not. There is nothing unexpected in this sequence, suggests the Ecoinometrics report. In fact, this is akin to any large-scale global asset, with convenient on and off ramps.

This right out of the playbook of a typical safe-haven asset, dumped during a cash-crisis, and pumped during rising liquidity. But now Bitcoin is stuck and whatll get it out? One word whales. The best friend of derivatives trades on the right side of leveraged trades, worst nightmare of those on the opposite end, and a close acquaintance to exchanges, a big whale move could send Bitcoin into its next bullorbear market. The report said,

There is no FOMO so whales have all the power when it comes to triggering price actions. My guess is that a few whale trades from now Bitcoin will break out of this tight range

However, if we were to go by the same macro-asset narrative, breaking out of correlation and a volatility slump, could Bitcoin go the way of gold? The yellow metal has, since the March crash, increased by 25 percent, and let me remind you, this is gold were talking about, an asset whos 2019 was labelled positive because it surged by a whopping 29 percent.

The need to accumulate [hoard] gold following a financial crisis is understood, it happened a decade ago during the housing crash. But the question we must ask ourselves is, if Bitcoin is indeed turning into a safe-haven asset, and the worlds most recognized safe-haven has now reached an 8-year high, how much could Bitcoin rise after the crisis, especially if the whales go up?

Dance Bii with WesdaRuler, And More Music News and Gossip | Flagpole – Flagpole Magazine

A PARTY AINT A PARTY UNLESS THE RULER IS AROUND: Hot off the burned rubber of the most scorching political track in recent Athens history, WesdaRuler just released a new mix named Dance Bii. The single-track mix slides around through Wes many moods, but mostly has him out front with his strong lyricism and his signature sing-song flow. Stylistically, this dips deep into 70s R&B and proto-disco (I mean, hell, peep the cover art), but also has some of Slick Ricks oddball-ness, Kendrick Lamars sense of structure and even sparse instances of DJ Screw-style slowdowns. This is also a very personal record, much like his LP Ocean Drive, and lyric heads will take much appreciation of Wess attention to detail and unbridled openness. This runs at just about half an hour long, and theres no reason I can imagine that would keep this from being on a near-constant loop for a good while. Check it out at wesdaruler.bandcamp.com. Its also available on limited edition CD and cassette via HHBTM Records at hhbtm.bandcamp.com.

TRIPLE PLAY: Sensational pop maestros Heffner have been on a slow tear all year long, evidenced most recently by the new single All Alone Baby. Its the third for the group this year. Whereas earlier singlesYou Dont Even Know Him and Higher Education (Electronic Dance Music)traded on pub rock masculinity tempered with fashionable melodicism, All Alone Baby pulls the throttle back into crafty reverb territory. First, its a much gentler tune than the other two, and the vocals are a lot more lethargicspecifically so and not merely slow. The buried guitars provide much of the power here. There are slight traces of a vapor wave aesthetic, so slight it can hardly be an apt descriptor, but mostly this is the sound of the band performing that crucial third-track on a mixtape action. They took it up two notches and now pulled it back a little. Find all three on Spotify or your favorite streaming service. Follow along at facebook.com/Heffnerband.

LAY YR MONEY DOWN: Austin, TX label Chicken Ranch Records (current home to Athens own Five-Eight) is now taking pre-orders for the upcoming two-song vinyl debut single by Pinky Doodle Poodle. The featured songs are Are You Readywhich you can stream at the pre-order linkand Go Ahead. Featured guests on the first track include Athens folks Lucy Calhoun, Sienna Chandler (Monsoon) and Timi Conley. Please see facebook.com/pinkydoodlepoodle for more information, and head over to store.chickenranchrecords.com to order.

GREEN GROW THE RUSHES: Every few months, like dependable clockwork, Love My Truck releases a new batch of songs. On Independence Day, the duo released the four-song set, Girth Of A Nation. It opens with the metaphorical hymn to perseverance Gumby, slides into the mixed-media heft of Odd Shape, heads into the buoyantly lowly celebration of friendship Beer Smoke, then closes with the clarity of See It. On this set, Love My Truck heads back into the heady use of empty space, which serves their drop-dead gorgeous melodies very well. I mean, whats left to say? Celebrate this all by yourself at lovemytruck.bandcamp.com.

STOP. POTTER TIME: I swear, yall, the sun never sets on Michael Potters empire. To wit, yet another album by his long-running solo and ensemble project The Electric Nature just came out. This time credited to Michael Potter and The Electric Nature, its titled Trance Music and is composed of four long tracks (Trance I-IV), but theyre arranged in the order of III, II, I, IV. These live recordings are described by Potter as ambient primitive, which is pretty much on the mark and nods heavily toward what I can only imagine is a trove of heroes for Potter running from Eno to Fahey. While Trance III develops the records tone with minor swells near the middle, the very next track, Trance II, brings a pretty big howl-n-scrape in its midsection as well as some acoustic noodlin. Trance I follows in much the same fashion with similar construction. Closer, Trance IV begins with very audible audience chatter and the music builds in a lonely manner off in its own corner. By the end, though, the volume has increased, and the audience seemingly recedes. Its the audio equivalent of a camera slowly moving in for a closeup. This album is available via streaming and also as a cassette tape, and pre-orders are being accepted as we speak. To do either or both, please see gardenportal.bandcamp.com

Bachelorette: Brother of Country Star Granger Smith On Clares Season – Screen Rant

The brother of country music star Granger Smith, Tyler Smith, is one of the 42 men who were flown out to Palm Springs to film The Bachelorette.

There is a great deal of mystery which men will be on Clare Crawley's season of The Bachelorette, in large part because an abundance of dudes were shipped out to Palm Springs in case there is a coronavirus outbreak and multiple men test positive. Most of the men are relative unknowns, but there is one potential suitor who is related to a famous country music singer.

The Bachelor has leaned into country music, especially as of late, recognizing there is an overlap in the two fan bases. The winner of Hannah Brown's season, Jed Wyatt, was a country music singer, though not a good one. Many of the guest artists that have been welcomed on the show in past seasons have been country singers. During Peter Weber's season, Chase Rice - who recently held a concert in a pandemic - performed during a one-on-one with Victoria Fuller. It caused a stir since Chase and Victoria had been romantically involved in the past. Later in the season, Hunter Hayes serenaded Peter and Victoria with his appropriately named song "I Want Crazy." Soon after, Peter learned that Victoria was, indeed, a bit too crazy for him.

Related: Bachelorette: Everything We Know About Clare Crawley for Season 16

This upcoming season, it seems country music should at least be a part of the storyline. That is, as long as Tyler Smith doesn't test COVID-positive. Tyler, 36, is the younger brother of 40-year-old country star Granger Smith. Granger has hit tracks like "Backroad Song" and "Happens Like That," one of which he might perform on the show in front of Tyler and Clare. According to Tyler's Twitter bio, he is his brother's manager.

Tyler could be a perfect fit for Clare. For one, he isn't way younger than her like a large portion of the field. Also, he is tied to someone famous. Generally, that tends to work in the favor of men on the show. Jordan Rodgers, brother of NFL quarterback Aaron Rodgers, won JoJo Fletcher's heart on her season. Josh Murray, who was a professional athlete, was chosen at the end of Andi Dorfman's season...before she realized he's not a good person. Musicians too have a way of wooing women. Hannah fell into Jed's trance, selecting him despite clear signs he wasn't being honest with her. Even as far back as Wes Hayden on Jillian Harris' season, musical talent has rarely hurt the male contestant.

Now, we don't know how musically inclined Tyler himself is. But it can't hurt having country music in his blood. Let's just hope that if Clare does choose him, he doesn't turn out to be a bad guy.

Magic Beans Gather At Beanstalk: At The Drive-In Part Deux With SunSquabi, Dynohunter, More [Photos] – Live for Live Music

Magic Beans hosted a second round of their reimagined annual Beanstalk gathering at Fort Collins, COs Holiday Twin Drive-In Theatre this past weekend. After selling out the first drive-in edition of their festival three weeks ago, the Colorado-based quartet decided to keep the music going with Beanstalk: At The Drive-In Part Deux for their last show of the summer, regulating safety measures and social distancing throughout the weekend.

Friday kicked off with a Dynohunter DJ set by trio member Clark Smith at 6:30 p.m., who set off the night with an hour-long set of infectious, trance house grooves. SunSquabi took to the stage for their first of two sets of the weekend at 8 p.m., welcoming friends Colby Buckler (Emancipator Ensemble) on drums and Ian Gilley (Recess) on keys billed as a SunSquabi & Friends set. The group kicked off their with Just A Little, laying down electro-funk jams for 90 minutes as the sun continued its path down over the horizon.

As the stars peeked out over the glow of the stage projection screens and old-school concession advertisements, the Magic Beans strode onstage at 10 p.m. for a two-hour set, setting things off with their 2018 What In The World. Keyboardist Casey Russell sang the all-too-familiar lyrics feels like were living in a world gone wrong as the crowd got shook off the worlds stress and problems and grooved to some much-needed jams. After an Alibi run-through, the band welcomed Dynohunters Clark Smith for a saxophone sit-in onHerbie Hancocks Cantaloupe Island for a high-energy jazz break.

Some sweetness was had in an intro of Gene Wilders Pure Imagination that led into the bands Handshake Or Hug, even though neither were exchanged on-site. Guitarist Scott Hachey led the group to take the song into an extended trance jam, before tour manager Austin Koontz took over lead vocals for a cover of Gary Numans Cars as fans cheered and danced at their cars for the surprise vocal sit-in. The rest of the set ended with Luck and Wanna Be Your Lover before the band closed with their Inventor, adding in a Star Wars Force Theme jam to the song as Comet NEOWISE flew over the sky.

After a relatively-less hot Saturday afternoon to re-energize, Saturday night kicked off with an hour-long set by Denver-based producer Homemade Spaceship at 6:30 p.m. Multi-instrumentalist Rob Levere held down the stage with his genre-mashing bass drops, including CloZee and Queen remixes. SunSquabi & Friends played their second and final set of the weekend at 8 p.m., sending out electro-grooves in-sync with the shooting lasers and fireworks off in the distance.

Magic Beans got freaky one more time for their last performance of the summer at 10 p.m., setting off the night with Lost & Found. The group was well warmed up from last nights show, and transitioned into their Feed The Beast, which featured a Beverly Hills Cop jam for some 80s, old-school techno jams. Sucka Blues came up next in the setlist rotation, followed by The Rolling Stones Dead Flowers and Magic Beans original Whos Crazy. The Magic Beans took the song into space territory with sequencing jam themes of Jurassic Park,Star Wars, and Top Gunmelody snippets, throwing in a quick tease of Andrea Bocellis Con Te Partir to finish it off.

The band continued the second half of the set with their slowed-down sultry Dr. Bubbleman featuringa sit-in by SunSquabis Kevin Donohue, and kept up the fun covers with an appearance ofCeline Dions My Heart Will Go On that lovingly led the band into Do Your Thing. Hachey closed out the night with a celebratory banter, and how the time in quarantine has been used to take a step back and learn more about yourself and those around you to better the world, as a feel-good Off Leash sequence rounded out the bands set. A reappearance of the ending bit of Lost & Found was squeezed in the middle of the light-weight dance jam to have fans leave the weekend with a positive spirit and energy to carry until live music is able to safely return again.

Dil Bechara: Sushant Singh Rajput, Sanjana Sanghi Take On Paris And Find Ways To Khulke Jeena Ka – Mashable India

Just when one thinks A.R. Rahmans tunes cant get any better, the musical maestro goes ahead and changes all that with his fresh melodies, in a way that is unique to him and only him. Its a long sentence I know; but Im blaming the trance Im in after listening to his composition in Dil Becharas newest track Khulke Jeena Ka. An ode to life, the song has been crooned by Arijit Singh and Shashaa Tirupati who have managed to evoke the right emotions with their voice against the magical chords. Even director Mukesh Chhabra has done a fine job in depicting the innocent romance between Sushant Singh Rajput and debutante Sanjana Sanghi.

Touring Paris which is also known as the capital of love, Sushants Manny and Sanjanas Kizie can be seen making most of their time whilst a doting mother played by the talented Swastika Mukherjee accompanies them. And the beauty of the song is that even chords change lanes when they do its a treat to both the ears and eyes! Sanjana even took to Instagram to share how Manny, turning Kizies cants into cans; and her dreams, into plans and it is really for all to see. Prior to this, Taare Ginn and the films title track had made us all tap our feet and hum. And while the entire album is already out, it is probably the chance of getting to see Sushant do, what he does best makes up for all that has happened recently.

If you're not in the know, the film is the official adaptation of the English movie The Fault In Our Stars based on John Green's novel of the same name. In fact, it was initially titled as Kizie Aur Manny. But then it was soon changed to Dil Bechara and guess it has a hard-to-miss ring to it. Sushant's last, the film is all set to release on Disney+ Hotstar on July 24.

Asexual self-cloning ticks that can kill livestock are closing in on Maine – Bangor Daily News

Maine tick experts are keeping an eye out for the Asian longhorned tick, a foreign tick species that can reproduce without mating and has been documented as close as Connecticut.

Reported for the first time in the United States in 2017, this tick species has now established populations in at least 12 states, all of which are in the northeastern half of the country.

Its certainly something that is on every tick researchers radar here in the eastern United States, said Griffin Dill, who manages the Tick Lab, located in the new UMaine Cooperative Extension Diagnostic and Research Laboratory in Orono. This species seems to primarily reproduce through parthenogenesis, which makes its ability to increase its population size rapidly an important factor.

Parthenogensis is a form of asexual reproduction in which growth and development of embryos occur without fertilization by sperm. Female Asian longhorned ticks can lay eggs, which will develop and hatch on their own. Because of this, a single female tick can establish a fast-growing population.

The Asian longhorned tick is known to carry and transmit a variety of dangerous diseases in its home range in Asia, but those diseases have yet to be documented in the Asian longhorned tick populations found in the U.S. However, there is a concern that the species could pick up and transmit diseases that already occur in the U.S. in other tick species, such as anaplasmosis, babesiosis and Powassan virus.

There are a couple of pathogens in Asia that they are believed to transmit that are closely related to pathogens we have here, so its possible, said Dill. But from what weve seen so far in other states, [the ticks] risk to humans is thought to be relatively low at the moment. And we havent seen indication that its able to contribute to the transmission of Lyme disease.

In the U.S., East Asia and other areas where this tick has been found, such as New Zealand and Australia, it is considered to be a serious threat to livestock such as cattle and sheep. Major infestations can cause stress on an animal, reducing its growth and production. And in some cases, infestations can kill animals due to blood loss.

From limited studies that have been done on this species, they do seem to prefer feeding on animal hosts as opposed to humans, Dill said.

A new study in the journal Zoonoses and Public Health, published earlier this month, investigates the origin of this tick species and how they are spreading across the country.

Researchers gathered samples of Asian longhorned ticks across the U.S. and internationally, then used gene sequencing to compare various populations. The results indicate that at least three individual ticks from self-cloning populations were somehow transported to the U.S., and this explains why all adult Asian longhorned ticks found in the U.S. so far have been female. With Asian longhorned ticks that reproduce through parthenogenesis, male offspring are rare.

(In Asia, male Asian longhorned ticks do exist in some populations where they participate in reproduction.)

The study also found that these original ticks most likely came from East Asia.

While the first established Asian longhorned tick population in the U.S. was documented in New Jersey in 2017, researchers believe the species had been flying under the radar in the country for several years.

Theres a whole lot we dont know about it, said Chuck Lubelczyk, vector ecologist at Maine Medical Center Research Institute. Right now, the states where its occurring tend to be doing a lot more research on it [than other states], and I think a lot more research is going to be done on it as time goes by. Its a public health issue thats been introduced to the country and we werent really talking about it before it arrived here. We were kind of unprepared for it.

Its believed that the tick species can easily be spread by wildlife, as well as the transportation of livestock and domestic animals, such as dogs.

There are some pretty good regulations in place in terms of livestock transport, Lubelczyk said. But it certainly speaks to people needing to be vigilant about tick control medicines for their dogs and other domestic animals.

In the U.S., Asian longhorned ticks have been collected from deer, dogs, raccoons, cats, opossums and a number of other warm-blooded animals, as well as a variety of birds, according to data collected by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Theyve also been found feeding on people.

Because of the wide geographical range that the species already inhabits, Lubelczyk believes it could survive Maines climate, even the states cold winters.

At least in southern Maine, I dont think itd have a problem, Lubelczyk said. How it would do up in northern Maine? I dont have a guess.

Moving forward, tick experts ask that Maine people be on the lookout for this invasive tick species; however, theyre difficult to identify. Adults are plain brown but can look similar to brown dog ticks and rabbit ticks, both of which live in Maine.

Researchers from the Maine Tick Lab and Maine Medical Center Research Institute are looking for Asian longhorned ticks, as well as the lone star tick (which has been found in Maine, but not yet in breeding populations), when conducting on-the-ground tick surveillance throughout the state.

In addition, they receive information about tick populations in Maine from the public sending tick samples to the Maine Tick Lab in Orono. The lab identifies these tick samples for free, and for an additional fee of $15 will test deer ticks for three common diseases they carry: Lyme disease, babesiosis and anaplasmosis. Golden Knights trying to simulate playoff action with live scrimmages – Las Vegas Sun

The Golden Knights started Mondays practice by throwing 30 minutes on the clock and activating the scoreboard. They split the squad into two groups and proceeded to simulate game, even swapping sides halfway through to get used to the second-period long change.

These types of setups will become commonplace in the final week of practice before the Golden Knights report to Edmonton for the postseason. They havent played a real game in more than four months, so theyre doing everything they can to prepare for the playoffs to begin.

Every scrimmage youll see from Day 1 I think youre going to see more and more game-like stuff, forward Paul Stastny said. Guys are more fresh, theres more control, more talking, more thinking out there. I think were making the right steps.

Stastny said sometimes when teams jump right into scrimmages at camp there is a tendency to play summer hockey, which more closely resembles a pickup game than a Stanley Cup playoff contest. The Golden Knights didnt do that, and couldnt even if they wanted to, according to Stastny.

Coach Peter DeBoer wouldnt allow it to happen.

DeBoer demands supreme focus and readiness ahead of the restarted season. Vegas has held full scrimmages at the end of most training-camp practices, including the first day, but they are beginning to look and feel more and more like games.

We havent rushed into maybe some of the things that you read around the league, DeBoer said. After four months those are the little things you have to get used to again: the shift length of games, the long change of the second period, those types of things. Well add them slowly as we go.

DeBoer said he wasnt worried about some of the nuances other teams have installed he isnt planning on taking TV timeouts or pausing before the scrimmage for the anthem or wearing game jerseys because he doesnt believe the team needs it.

The Golden Knights have the luxury of an exhibition game before the tournament formally begins then three round-robin games for seeding only with no risk of getting sent home early if they perform poorly.

I think we have a little bit more runway even though the round-robin games are important, DeBoer said.

The Golden Knights play their exhibition next week, on July 30 against the Arizona Coyotes, but still have a minimum of 22 days before the elimination round begins.

Mondays scrimmage was the closest theyve come to a real game, and there were real takeaways to draw from it. Its still practice, of course, but the line of Paul Stastny, Reilly Smith and Jonathan Marchessault looked excellent.

All the goals were scored either right in front of the net or as a result of crowding the lane in front of the goalie.

The Golden Knights are having fun with it too. About halfway through, Marc-Andre Fleury stonewalled Marchessault on a partial breakaway and jokingly mocked him with a modified Ali shuffle.

When Ryan Reaves saw the opposing team was pulling its goalie, he loudly announced he wanted on the ice to try to score the empty netter.

It gives the guys a chance to up the pace and get that game-like feel, defenseman Zach Whitecloud said. Just gives us a chance to compete too, which is always fun.

Team Gray beat Team White 4-1, but no one will remember that, or perhaps any specifics about the scrimmage, by next week. The scrimmages purpose is to help the Golden Knights feel more comfortable when theyre soon playing a meaningful game.

Every day is a step closer to where we want to be, including myself, Stastny said. Come Aug. 11, 12 when the top 16 plays, I think everyones going to be really ready to go.

Trump’s team on Capitol Hill as virus aid talks deepen – Las Vegas Sun

By Lisa Mascaro, Associated Press

Tuesday, July 21, 2020 | 8:56 a.m.

WASHINGTON President Donald Trump's negotiators fanned out on Capitol Hill Tuesday over a new COVID-19 aid package as divisions between the White House and Senate Republicans pushed talks into House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's office to deal with the mounting crisis.

Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and acting chief of staff Mark Meadows were conferring with GOP senators before pivoting in the afternoon to Pelosi and Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer, trying to meld the GOP's emerging $1 trillion proposal with the House's more sweeping $3 trillion bill.

With the pandemic showingno signs of easing,Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said Washington must develop a strategy to safely reopen schools and businesses until a vaccine can be found.

We need to carve out a new normal," Republican McConnell said.

Lawmakers concede the daunting challenge of trying contain the coronavirus. The U.S. has the more infections and a rising death toll of 140,800, more than anywhere else in the world. Thehealth crisis is worseningjust as emergency economic relief is about to expire.

Trump convened GOP leaders at the White House on Monday and acknowledged a big flareup of COVID-19 cases. But the president, who willrelaunch his daily televised briefings, is focused on therapeutics and a vaccine.

Trump's promise of COVID-19 cures are falling flat on Capitol Hill as lawmakers understand vaccines remain months, if not a year, from widespread distribution in the U.S. The federal government is still struggling to provide basic medical supplies and personal protective equipment to hospitals and health care providers.

Schumer dismissed the emerging GOP plan as favoring corporate interests over Americas working families, and repeating mistakes of spring when Trump pushed for states to ease stay-home orders and reopen.

That will not, not get the job done, Schumer said.

The package from McConnell, being crafted behind closed doors, is expected to include at least $70 billion to help schools reopen. It will likely replace anexpiring $600 weekly unemployment benefits boostwith a smaller amount. The GOP's proposed cut in unemployment assistance is designed to ensure that jobless people do not receive a greater benefit than if they were working.

McConnell said Tuesday his package will send a fresh round of direct cash payments to Americans below a certain income level, extend small business loans under the Paycheck Protection Program and create a sweeping five-year liability shield against coronavirus lawsuits.

But the president's priorities are splitting his GOP allies in Congress giving momentum to Democrats as talks are underway.

The administration criticized the GOP's push for $25 billion more invirus testing, saying earlier testing funds remain unspent. Trump at the White House insisted on a full payroll tax repeal that many Republican senators oppose. The White House also wants to link $70 billion in education funds to mandates that schools reopen.

Democrats are investigating why the Trump administration has left almost half the testing money unspent.

House Democrats have approved $100 billion as an education stabilization fund and Senate Democrats are seeking even more, $430 billion for schools and universities to re-open with money for spacing students apart, buying masks for daily use and alternating bus schedules.

The political stakes are high for both parties beforethe November election, and even more so for the nation, as the virus crisis and economic fallout hits cities large and small.

Joe Biden, the Democrats presumed presidential nominee, stated his own priorities. The new package should deliver a lifeline to those who need it most: working families and small businesses, he said.

Mnuchin has vowed passage by month's end, asa $600 boost in jobless aid is set to expire, and said he expected a fresh $1 trillion jolt of business tax breaks and other aid would have a big impact onthe struggling economy.

Easing the payroll tax is dividing Trumps party because it is used to finance Social Security and Medicare. The tax is already being deferred for employers under the previous virus relief package. Supporters say cutting it now for employees would put money in people's pockets and stimulate the economy, but detractors warn it would do little for out-of-work Americans and add to the nations rising debt load. McConnell is straining to keep the bills total price tag at $1 trillion.

GOP senators swiftly pushed back as the Republicans and the White House battled over priorities.

GOP Sen. John Cornyn of Texas was among several Republicans saying hes not a fan of a payroll tax holiday.

Sen. Lamar Alexander of Tennessee, the chairman of the Health committee, said, All roads to opening school, going back to work, opening child care lead through testing. Trump raised alarms on Capitol Hill when he suggested last month at a rally in Oklahoma that he wanted to slow virus testing.

Trump has insisted that the virus willdisappear, but the president's view does not at all match projections from theleading health professionals..

The proposed virus aid package would be the fifth, following the $2.2 trillion bill passed in March, the largest U.S. intervention of its kind. While many Republicans hoped the virus would ease and economy rebound, it's become clear more aid is needed.

The jobless rate has remained in double digits, higher than in the last decades Great Recession, and a federal eviction moratorium on millions of rental units approved in the last bill is about to expire.
