Stem Cell Therapy Market Forecasted To Surpass The Value Of US$ XX Mn/Bn By 2020 - Jewish Life News

U of T spin-off Empirica Therapeutics acquired by US firm – News@UofT

Empirica Therapeutics, a startup co-founded by Donnelly Centre investigatorJason Moffathas beenacquired by Century Therapeutics, a U.S. based company developing off-the-shelf cell therapy products for cancer.

Century will develop Empiricas proof-of-principle treatment for glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer, into therapy that can be tested on patients.

Moffat co-founded Empirica in 2018 with Dr. Sheila Singh, professor in the department of surgery at McMaster University, to leverage their combined expertise in cell engineering, functional genomics and brain tumour modelling. The teams recently demonstrated the potential of CAR-T cell therapy, in which immune cells are instructed to kill tumour cells, for the treatment of glioblastoma in preclinical models, as published in a May 2020Cell Stem Cellpaper.

Recent advances in immunotherapy have offered hope to patients with previously untreatable cancers, says Moffat, a professor of molecular genetics at U of T and the Canada Research Chair in Functional Genomics of Cancer who served as Empiricas chief scientific officer. We hope that our approach of specifically targeting glioblastoma cells with CAR-T therapy will give the patients a better quality of life and increase their chances of survival.

Philadelphia-based Century Therapeutics will further develop this type of treatment for patients. Backed by Bayer, Fujifilm, and Versant Ventures, the company specializes in developing cell therapies from induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) that have been genetically engineered to avoid immune rejection. Century is working to harness the power of stem cells to develop curative cell therapy products for cancer that overcome the limitations of first-generation cell therapies. The companys CEO, Lalo Flores, acknowledged Empiricas deep expertise and unique capabilities that will accelerate their efforts to develop iPSC derived immune effector cell products designed to treat brain cancer.

Chimeric antigen receptor T cell (CAR-T) therapy involves genetically engineering a patients immune T cells to target and bind to a specific protein present on cancer cells directly and eliminate them. Centurys technology skirts the need to collect patients own immune cells thanks to its ability to manufacture off-the-shelf T cells that can be implanted without rejection.

Our team is excited to become part of Century Therapeutics, whose iPSC-derived allogeneic cell therapy platform is creating promising treatments for patients who need them most, says Dr. Singh, who is also a Canada Research Chair in Human Cancer Stem Cell Biology and served as Empiricas chief executive officer.

Now known as Century Therapeutics Canada, the new subsidiary will be based at McMaster Innovation Park.

Empiricas first CAR-T program was focused on a protein called CD133, which was the first brain tumor initiating cell marker discovered by Singh while a PhD student at the University of Toronto. Subsequent work by both the Singh and Moffat groups led to a deeper functional understanding of CD133 and an antibody that proved useful for marking cells for therapy.

When used in mice with human glioblastoma, CD133-targetting CAR-T therapy was considered a success due to reduced tumor burden and improved survival. These pre-clinical results were partly supported by a Terry Fox Research Institute New Frontiers Program Project Grant awarded to a multidisciplinary team of scientists including Singh and Moffat.

Glioblastoma is the most common and aggressive form of brain cancer owing to tumour heterogeneity at the molecular level and its ability to evolve into new forms that resist therapy. Standard treatment involves surgery, radiation and chemotherapy but most patients relapse within seven to nine months, while median survival between diagnosis and death has not extended beyond 16-20 months over the past decade.

CAR-T will be delivered in recurrent glioblastoma patients after Moffat and Singhs teams found that a population of CD133 positive glioblastoma cells remain following initial treatment.

If we can hit those cells at minimal disease, we should buy the patient more time, says Moffat. And hopefully well find a way to figure out how to combine multiple CAR-Ts; for example, by combining CD133 and other targets to potentially even cure the disease.

Empirica Therapeutics was supported by investments from U of Ts strategic partners, the Centre for Commercialization of Antibodies and Biologics and the Centre for Commercialization of Regenerative Medicine.

We are proud to have been involved with the launch and growth of Empirica, stated Rob Verhagen, former CEO of CCAB. The outcome with Century marks another stride in building a productive life science industry at U of T and McMaster and we look forward to seeing this valuable research benefiting patients in the future. The startup was also supported by the McMaster Industry Liaison Office and the Ontario Bioscience Innovation Organization through important connections to relevant business networks and partners.

To be a feminist atheist in India: Hate-filled and v..onses make even the act of offering solidarity fraught – Firstpost

Many Feminist Atheist Women navigate life and work by keeping our opinions on religion largely to ourselves unless we have the assurance of a safe space.

In the mid to late 2000s when the tedious subject of actively seeking nuptial associations through newspaper ads and matrimonial websites was being broached in my family, I offered my lukewarm consent to speaking to potential alliances based on a checklist of things that were core to my personal politics. Ranked very high on that list was religion, or lack of its practice thereof in a future partner. I wasnt yet out to my family as an atheist but I knew what I did not want.

(Disclaimer: I still use oh god! and omg! as exclamations out of sheer force of habit.)

Beyond the mild chiding ofbeshi barabari korona (dont overdo it),my parents were resigned to the fact that I will actively try to sabotage every potential match to escape being tied down in holy matrimony. It wasnt much of a surprise that most Bengali middle class families sought practicing Hindu daughters in law and none of the arranged attempts at matchmaking fructified into potential leads. I grew up in a Hindu family with an atheist father and a religious mother with no real restrictions on my choices. Both of them encouraged me to think independently and question everything, but also to respect the fundamental rights of others.

I grew up with the simplistic notion that, like sexual acts, religion is a deeply personal thing, practiced within the confines of ones house with enthusiastic consent of participants. Of course, with age, the nuances of religions close ties with culture, community, caste, sexuality and gendered components were clearer. What didnt change was how I and many other Feminist Atheist Women navigate life and work by keeping our opinions on religion largely to ourselves unless we have the assurance of a safe space. Mostly we do not. And in current times, a comment against religion is opening oneself up to an endless cycle of organised online harassment, state intervention in the form of FIRs, and physical violence in the form of mob attacks.

Theres a blurry, uneasy space in the backrooms of activism of change that is inhabited by this minority group whose voices are increasingly guarded in criticism of certain things. And by certain I specifically mean all things that have to do with religion. They are the irreligionists, the atheists, the rationalists, and the nones. These are the people usually at the forefront of campaigns against political intimidation of those accused of hurting religious sentiments a blanket term that can mean anything from an insulting tweet to a risqu dialogue in a film.

The Indian law vigorously protects those who practice religion. There are no similar provisions for atheists, though Article 51A (h) of the Constitution does say that it is the duty of every Indian to develop a scientific temper, humanism and the spirit of inquiry and reform. Read in the current context, it probably means that spirit of inquiry is okay as long as it does not ruffle religious sentiments.

There, of course, is no legal recourse for hurting of scientific sentiments.

Now narrow this group down to women. Narrow this further down to women who identify as feminists. Its a space filled with lifelong experiences coloured by violent patriarchy which not just policed their actions since birth but also their free thought from an age when they started to question injustice. It started with a dont ask questions, and bled into all spaces of life from being made to go to places of worship against their will to being punished for not keeping religious fasts. This, of course, is in the context of access, ableism and privilege. For women without all of this, a vocal lack of belief in god in a deeply religious family is still punishable by violence in many parts of India. Many women are brainwashed into picking up familial religious traditions from a young age. Some do it willingly, others through the force of habit-forming repetition.

Its bad enough to be a woman practicing atheism in India, its worse if were also feminist.

I do not even mean radical atheism. What most of us grow into is an atheism printed in the mellow colours of regional, cultural acceptances and reluctant observation of events tied to religion such as Durga Puja, harvest festivals, feasts and public holidays. Were basically indulging our loved ones from the outer periphery of religion, impatiently waiting for the food service to start.

Since in India religion is closely woven into ones cultural and community identities, atheist women find themselves not just a minority but also navigating multiple layered existences within caste, sexual orientation and gender identities. The protection and accumulated privileges that upper caste, cishet, practicing atheist, feminists have, will starkly differ from anyone else.

But what is most intriguing is the way this feminism plays out in this intersectional space. Especially in the performative atheism on the internet that ignores and demonises the politics of religious women as primitive versus actual allyship. And this also works the other way round.

Often religious women mothers, sisters, mothers in law, aunts and grandparents gatekeep this space for Indian women atheists. How can we protect our atheism online from a bloodthirsty religious mob and still stand in solidarity with religious feminist sisters who are under attack for other aspects of their work? How can we protect the fundamental rights of women who say anti-religious things and not face similar attacks?

I found myself writing and deleting several times an atheist response to the hounding of the two young women in the past week Hindustan Times reporter Shristi Jaiswal who made a puerile comment about a Hindu deity, and comedian Agrima Joshua who used (the statue of a) historical Hindu icon as a punchline of a joke in a standup act. I would think that both views should ideally be inconsequential to the stature of the icons in question. But as is the custom of Indias thriving industry of offense taking, both views have resulted in the two womens relentless hounding, including public rape threats. In the case of the former, the silence of women journalists who are normally quick to jump to the defense of a colleague, is bothering me. I found myself asking, does feminism not extend its benevolent safety net to those who lampoon religion? In the case of the latter, the silence was broken mainly after there was a rape threat, not because Joshuas free speech is her fundamental right if that speech isnt breaking a law and it didnt.

It is not that feminist religious women do not protest arbitrary muscle-show of religion. They often have in the past.

One does not have to be an atheist to protest injustice. But silences in the face of religious anger directed at women could stem from the following reasons i) that they too feel their own religious sentiments have been hurt and this is where they need to introspect why this makes them uncomfortable ii) they think that an adult displaying irresponsible behaviour should bear the full consequences of their action, and iii) as is mostly commonly the case, without steel-strong safety nets of judicial protection, online spaces are violent and swift in retribution to those who question the majority view, especially if the majority view is in favour of majority religion.

Navigating atheism and feminism in India with the view that most organised religion oppress women and underrepresented genders is standing up against layered structures with roots that start with ones own families, then creep into society, in schools, colleges, community gatherings, marriage, workplace, public recreational places and every structure where patriarchy has a hold in deciding what women say and read, and how they live their lives.

If there has been hesitation to put in words the sense of irony in seeing the harassment of a living person for an immature opinion, to protect a mythological character who probably does not need this protection, will be to expose oneself to similar attacks. Religion wields too much and too disproportionate a power. Especially in the absence of a clear definition of what constitutes religious sentiment. The problem is not that religions form the basis of most lived practices in our country its one of the things that makes India diverse and multicultural. The problem is that ardent followers of religions demand absolute immunity from caricature.

To be an atheist feminist in India is to increasingly expose oneself to hate but more alarmingly, to actual acts of violence in physical spaces. And the act of offering solidarity to sisters and brothers outside this space is getting increasingly difficult.

Wedding memories and Mother’s raisin pie | Free – Emporia Gazette

July 15 was our twenty-seventh anniversary. Lots of memories throughout the years since Joe and I were married.

This is what my mother wrote in her column in July 1993 about our wedding. Mother wrote,

The weather was ideal for the wedding of daughter Lovina to Joe Eicher. Lots of work at such a time.

The Tuesday before the wedding, which was Thursday, July 15, about two dozen women came to help. They baked 90 pies (oatmeal, cherry, raisin, and rhubarb) and made 14 batches of nothings. Didnt really want that many pies, but that number came upon us before we knew or thought of it. Well anyways no worry to run out of pies.

Wednesday about a dozen girls came to peel potatoes, cut up vegetables for the dressing and make potato salad for which I had cooked a twenty-quart cooker full of potatoes. Also, the tables were set and the last minute cleaning done. Our wash house or shed saw lots of life out there, as all the work was done in there to prepare for the wedding ceremony. Wednesday evening quite a few of our friends came to see the wedding tables, and refreshments were served to the ones that came. It was an enjoyable evening.

Then came the wedding day. We started to fry chicken (300 pounds) at 4:15 a.m. which was served for dinner. Had enough for supper too and also served boneless ham. Our meals consisted of chicken and noodles, gravy, mashed potatoes, dressing, chicken, buttered corn, green beans (which came out of our garden), pork and beans, potato salad, carrot salad, lettuce salad (plenty from the garden), hot peppers, Swiss cheese, fruit salad, tapioca pudding, pies, cakes, nothings, celery sticks, coffee, bread, rhubarb jam, and butter. There were around 18 skillets used to fry the chicken. We cooked 3 twenty-quart cookers of potatoes for dinner for mashed potatoes and 2 twenty-quart cookers for chicken and noodles. In the afternoon we again cooked over 3 twenty-quart cookers of potatoes to be mashed and more chicken and noodles for supper. Also 16 quarts of gravy. There were 28 women to prepare the meals. We could seat 98 people in the house and 70 in the wash house. The tool shed was cleaned out where the wedding services were held and later used to set up a table for the children for the noon and evening meals. We had quite a crowd here for both meals. Well enough of this for now. What a relief to have it over with.

I have so many precious memories of mother and how much she did for her family.

Joe was called back in to work this week after being laid off since March 23. It sure is a relief to us to have his income coming in again.

Yesterday, son Benjamin turned 21, so he wanted the family to come home for supper. He ordered out pizza and wings for all of us. What a treat is was! Chips, cheeseball and crackers, and ice cream were also added to the menu. I didnt get time to make a cake and didnt for daughter Lorettas birthday either. With son Josephs birthday coming up next week, it looks like we will have one cake for all the July birthdays. Its almost too much cake for one month if we have three. Benjamin said he wouldnt eat cake anyway, so he didnt care that there wasnt a cake.

Since I am running out of space, I will write about our family gathering at sister Leah and Pauls house next week.

I will share the recipe for Mothers raisin pie. God bless!

Raisin Pie

2 (8-inch) unbaked pie crusts

1 cup raisins

2 Tablespoons clear gelatin

pinch of salt

1 cup sugar

1 Tablespoon apple cider vinegar

1 cup water

Preheat the oven to 400 degrees. Use one crust to line an 8-inch pie pan. Cook the raisins with water to cover in a kettle over medium heat until plump and juicy, about 15 to 30 minutes. In a bowl, make a thickening with the gelatin, salt, sugar, vinegar, and water. Pour into the raisin mixture. Cook until the mixture is thick enough to stick to a spoon. Add more sugar if it is not sweet enough for you. Pour into the pie shell. Cover the top with the remaining pie crust and seal and flute the edges. Cut slits in the center for steam to escape. Bake for 30 minutes, until the top is golden brown. Makes 1 (8-inch) pie.

Troubled Trump changes his tune on mask-wearing, calls it ‘patriotic’ gesture – FRANCE 24 English

Issued on: 21/07/2020 - 04:30

US President DonaldTrumppromised Monday to resume televised coronavirus briefings and finally spoke out in favour of mask-wearing a marked change of tune as polls show him headed for election disaster.

With only just over 100 days until the election against Democrat Joe Biden,Trumpis scrambling to respond to public anger over his troubled months-long handling of the pandemic.

Since the virus first hit the United States,Trumphas insisted that it will just "disappear."

But that sunny claim is now badly strained even among loyal supporters, as they watch Covid-19 cases surge through populous Republican-led states like Florida and Texas.

More widely, polls show public trust inTrump's management of the crisis tanking.

Throughout, he has sought to deny the seriousness of the problem, an attitude symbolized by his mockery of masks and refusal to back up doctors' recommendations for mass use.

Trumpwent some way to addressing that Monday with a tweeted picture of himself in a black mask with the presidential seal and a call for patriotism.

"Many people say that it is Patriotic to wear a face mask when you can't socially distance,"Trumpwrote. "There is nobody more Patriotic than me, your favorite President!"

However, his tweet stopped well short of endorsing calls from some for a nationwide mandate to wear masks in public.

'Doing very well'

Trump, a lifelong real estate salesman and more recently reality TV performer, says the real problem is that Americans just aren't hearing the right news.

So, likely from Tuesday he will resume the regular evening televised briefings from the White House that he gave until late April, often finding himself accused of giving confusing or misleading information.

"I think it's a great way to get information out to the public," he told reporters. "We're doing very well in so many different ways."

Trumpacknowledged a current "big flare-up" of cases in the country but once again distanced himself from responsibility for the problem, underlining that the disease is also ravaging "Mexico, Brazil, many countries in Europe, all over, Russia."

"When you watch the news, the local news, and you see it, and it's, it's like all about the United States. They never like to talk about what's going on in the world," he said.

Trumpsaid the briefings would focus on good news regarding vaccine development and therapeutics.

"We think we're doing very well in that regard," he said. "I think I'm going to be bringing in some of the great companies that are working very successfully."

"We're really coming up with some very good answers," he said.

PR fiasco

Trumphas great faith in his ability before the cameras. He has transformed the image of the US presidency during his first term with unprecedented streams of press conferences, tweets and rallies.

But his previous spell as the nation's pandemic-spokesman in chief ended badly in late April.

Trumpoften turned what were billed as opportunities to provide the anxious public with information into testy exchanges with reporters in the White House briefing room.

He finally ditched the events after a PR fiasco where he mused on air about the possibility of injecting household disinfectant to combat Covid-19.

He later said he had been speaking "sarcastically," although there was no evidence of that at the time.

Polls slide

The president has consistently sought to play down the severity of the health crisis, hoping that voters will instead focus on what he touts as his good management of the economy.

In an interview with "Fox News Sunday," he once again claimed that the virus, which has killed more than 140,000 Americans and caused massive economic disruption, would somehow go away by itself.

"I'll be right eventually," he said.

But with the virus on the rebound, he finds himself accused of failing to lead.

Biden has opened a double-digit lead in election polls, and an ABC/Washington Post pollreleased Friday showed nearly two-thirds of Americans mistrustTrumpon the coronavirus.

Trump, nevertheless, appears to be looking forward to his chance to get back to the briefing room podium.

"We had very successful briefings. I was doing them and we had a lot of people watching, record numbers watching. In the history of cable television, there's never been anything like it," he said.

OnePlus Buds first impressions: Fast Pair and a great price, but only worth it with the right phone – 9to5Google

After years of skipping over the form factor, OnePlus finally launched its first pair of truly wireless earbuds this week the OnePlus Buds. Ive had the chance to use these earbuds for the past several days, and, as far as first impressions go, OnePlus Buds arent half bad!

Heres the quick summary on what youre getting with OnePlus Buds. This pair of truly wireless earbuds delivers your music through two independent earbuds that come with a charging case. Youll get 30 hours of playback between the buds and the case, and theyll communicate over standard Bluetooth. Its a relatively standard package, really, but at $79, its perfectly acceptable as well.

Being a pair of earbuds, I think one of the most important things to talk about is sound, and thats an area OnePlus Buds didnt let me down in first impressions. The sound quality here is rather good, being at least on par with Googles Pixel Buds, Samsungs Galaxy Buds+, and Apples AirPods. Bass is certainly present despite not being especially strong mainly due to the lack of a seal and most songs sound crisp and clear. Audiophiles wont be impressed, but I think the average customer will absolutely be happy with what the OnePlus Buds offer.

Outside of audio quality, though, I often hinge my opinion on truly wireless earbuds to their smarts. This is an area where OnePlus had me excited, but ultimately let me down. The good? OnePlus Buds use Googles Fast Pair standard. That means these earbuds can quickly pair to your phone without opening Bluetooth settings, and theyll also link to your account for easy setup on other devices you currently own, or will in the future. That support also enables battery levels to be shown on all devices.

The bad? OnePlus Buds are sorely lacking when it comes to touch controls, especially if youre not using a OnePlus smartphone. Ive been using the LG Velvet as of late, and paired to that device I can only use the touch controls on OnePlus Buds to skip tracks. Even play/pause wont work without pulling an earbud out. This all changes when you connect to a OnePlus device, as there youll find an app to control the Buds including customizable touch controls. As someone who uses a lot of different Android phones, I found this really frustrating. For consumers, itll be fine if theyre using a OnePlus phone, but it effectively cuts off a major part of the experience for everyone else. Shame.

When it comes to the hardware, I have mixed feelings. Upon first unboxing the earbuds, I really felt like the hardware was cheap cheap enough to be expected at a dollar store, to be honest but in the several days since Ive come to appreciate it a bit more. I still dont think the hardware on OnePlus Buds feels as nice as Pixel Buds or AirPods, but the matte case is comfortable to hold and doesnt get damaged easily.

What about the comfort of the Buds themselves? This is where things get really subjective. For me, OnePlus Buds fit fine and easily stay in my ears, but that wont be the case for everyone. Basically, if AirPods are comfortable for you, OnePlus Buds probably will be as well.

Battery life is something else I was pretty happy with in my testing, but I dont have sky-high standards in that department. The five-hour battery life of Googles Pixel Buds satisfies me without qualms, so the seven-hour battery on OnePlus Buds was just great. On one especially heavy day, OnePlus Buds were used to stream music while I went shopping, did yard work, and played some video games. Over the course of probably six hours, the battery held up well and the Buds were still comfortable, too. Ive yet to have to charge the case as well.

Overall, OnePlus Buds left a good first impression with me. I dont think theyre perfect, especially when it comes to touch controls, but they are a good product when you look at the $79 price point. Users with a OnePlus smartphone will surely be happy with the Buds, as long as the design works for them.If you dont have a OnePlus phone, though, Id personally look elsewhere.

Well have a full review, video and all for the OnePlus Buds in the coming days to dive further into battery life, sound quality, and more. Stay tuned for that, and leave a comment below to let us know if youre planning to pick up a pair!

Kerala: Probe reveals more than 180 kg gold smuggled through diplomatic channels – Jagran English

The probe agencies have conclusive evidence that at least 180 kilograms of gold were smuggled and suspect the total amount to increase further.

New Delhi | Jagran News Desk: In the latest development in the Kerala smuggling case, probe agencies have found that more than 180 kg of gold was smuggled through the diplomatic cargo. Swapna Suresh and Sarith, two key accused in the case were taken to different locations by the investigative agencies for collecting evidence, NDTV reported.

The investigative agencies, according to reports, are now in the process of recovering the smuggled gold. They have conclusive evidence that at least 180 kilograms of gold were smuggled and suspect the total amount to increase further. The gold was smuggled at least 20 times through the diplomatic route.

The gold scam grabbed headlines on July 5 after customs officials at the Thiruvananthapuram airport intercepted diplomatic cargo and seized 30 kg of gold worth Rs 13.5 crore meant for the UAE consulate office. The episode piqued national interest because diplomatic cargo enjoys immunity from routine Customs examination. The cargo was listed as bathroom fittings, noodles, biscuits and dates, sent from Sharjah-based Al Zatar Spices.

The case is being investigated by Customs and the National Investigation Agency (NIA) which has booked Suresh, Sarith, Sandeep Nair and Fasil Fareed under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.

Meanwhile, the NIA has requested Interpol to issue a Blue Corner Notice against- Faisal Fareed, who was allegedly involved in forging seal and emblem of United Arab Emirates (UAE) Embassy to commit his crime.

"The documents were forged by Faisal Fareed to ensure diplomatic protection for the baggage. Fareed is the third accused in the case. The gold smuggled into Kerala was not used for jewellery but terror activities. The accused smuggled gold twice in 2019, in two batches of 18 kg and 9 kg," the NIA had submitted before the special court.

To the Rescue – Youngstown Air Reserve Station

NEW YORK, N.Y. --

A hospital within a hospital, a first of its kind, was the response needed to combat a new strain of coronavirus that has not been previously identified in humans and was rapidly affecting New York, the country and world.

This strain of coronavirus, known as COVID-19, is proving to be as devastating as the 1918 Spanish Flu claiming the lives of over 570 thousand people worldwide since the first known case was reported in Wuhan, China, in November 2019. The virus has since affected more than three million people in the U.S. and over 12 million worldwide according to data gathered by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), World Health Organization (WHO) and European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control.

In March, the WHO declared the COVID-19 outbreak as a pandemic.

On April 3, Joseph Joey, a paramedic and 308th Rescue Squadron reserve Pararescueman (PJ), was contacted by Dr. Melissa Givens, Medical Director of the Ryan F. Larkin Field Hospital, and Dr. Steven Rush, a retired 103rd Rescue Squadron Flight Physician. Dr. Givens, also a retired Army doctor, along with Dr. Rush, understood the value in bringing aboard special operator force (SOF) medics. They asked Joey if he would be willing to help alleviate the growing pressure on New York hospitals to meet the increasing demand to treat a rapidly growing number of patients experiencing COVID-19 symptoms.

New York was one of the most heavily impacted states with rapidly rising numbers of positive COVID-19 cases reported between March and April. The state had just over one thousand positive cases of COVID-19 in mid-March but that number sky rocketed to over 240 thousand positive cases by mid-April, according to the CDC and WHO. This outbreak began to quickly overwhelm the states entire medical system.

Joey didnt hesitate to agree to the call for help and immediately arranged for a flight to New York.

I was ecstatic to have been called by Dr. Givens and Dr. Rush, Joey said. I wanted to be a part of the solution and to help people. Helping people is my passion.

As a traditional reservist, Joey was able to accept the request from the New York doctors in their time of need. Agreeing to use his knowledge, experience and pararescue expertise, Joey flew to NY - putting his life in harms way against an invisible adversary; COVID-19.

Upon arrival, Joey and a handful of medics were requested by the Medical Director of the New York Presbyterian Milstein Center, Dr. Laureen Hill, to create a side unit within the wing of the hospital known as Riverview Terrace. This new unit was to act as a relief valve to the main field hospital in the city.

Riverview Terrace was a conference and banquet space that was converted into a 47-bed ward to support Milstein Hospital, Joey said. We were fully capable of providing full-spectrum patient care to those experiencing symptoms as well as those diagnosed with COVID-19.

Unfortunately, the overwhelmed and understaffed hospitals in the area were unable to provide the personnel required to support this unit inside Riverview Terrace. Thats when Joey stepped in and was asked to recruit and form provider teams while identifying and meeting the logistical needs to accommodate incoming patients.

Luckily, he had amassed an extensive network of fully qualified individuals to fit that need which hed gathered over the course of his military career. He handpicked Air Force Reserve and National Guard PJs, Army medics, SEALs, and civilian professionals to perform their duties as medical providers in this uniquely improvised field hospital. This newly integrated team flew to NYC, immediately established the field hospital and began receiving their first patients within 96-hours of notification. Although this team of 55 professionals had never all met or interacted with each other, they worked with ease and understanding.

Other members from the 308th RQS also answered the call to help to including; Josh, Chaney, Louis, Tyler and Gavin.

Under the directive of the local New York Presbyterian Hospital doctors, this joint force team was able to perform at an elevated scope. They provided a rapid response force with dynamic medial capabilities able to adapt to their environment and the needs of the field hospital as well as other medical professionals.

Riverview Terrace field hospital operated for five weeks and as a result of their efforts, 60 patients received the care they desperately required.

When the surge dissipated, the hospitals were less burdened, Joey said. But our team remained in place and interspersed themselves into other areas of the hospital to continue to provide medical care for another four weeks, wherever they were needed.

Joey explained how grateful he feels to have been given the opportunity to bring together a team of operators and civilians to help accomplish such a monumental task

We integrated well with the hospital system, he said. Im thankful for the positive results and helping the cause.

Joey has been a PJ for six years, during which time he has completed two combat deployments. His first four years he served in the active duty Air Force but he now calls the 308the RQS home, serving in a traditional reserve capacity.

The 308th RQS is a unit within the 920th Rescue Wing and consists ofCombat Rescue Officers (CRO), Survival, Evasion, Resistance and Escape (SERE) and Pararescuemen (PJ) which is also known as Guardian Angels. While many candidates enter the 920th from the active duty Air Force, others are accessed directly into the Air Force Reserve. All candidates must pass a physical assessment test which has about 15% success rate.

An Air Force PJ is a special warfare operator, trained to recovery and medically treat personnel in combat and humanitarian environments, at any time, all over the world. They are considered the Jack of all trades. On top of being nationally registered Paramedics, their extensive training includes tactical scuba diving, static and freefall skydiving, high angle mountain rescue, austere survival skills and cold weather training.

The mission of the 308th is to train and maintain the Air Forces only dedicated rescue capability forDepartment of Defensepersonnel, in support of Combatant Commanders wartime objectives as well as peacetime humanitarian and disaster relief activities. They can provide this capability under the harshest of circumstances to include, day/night, inclement weather and all terrain rescue conditions.

Based at Patrick Air Force Base, Fla., the 920th RQW is the only Air Force Reserve Command personnel recovery wing. The wing trains and equips over 2,000 Airmen who carry out its mission, to search for, locate and recover U.S. Armed Forces personnel during military operations.

There’s More to the CHOP Than What the Media Will Have You Believe – Study Breaks

Post Views: 764

When 20-year-old university student Zaya (whose name has been changed for this article) entered Seattles Capitol Hill Occupied Protest, otherwise known as the CHOP, it was more out of coincidence than deliberate action. She and her mother were only in Seattle to attend a bridal shower. Gearing up to head home with a last-minute coffee run, Zayas plans changed when a man mentioned that the CHOP was just around the corner from the caf.

The two entered the CHOP from the north end of Cal Anderson Park, initially spotting only a cluster of tents and mistaking it for a homeless encampment. I didnt really know what to expect because I hadnt really seen pictures of it before, she recalled. Despite playing an active role in signing petitions, reading about ongoing protests (including the CHOP) and often being the one to educate family members about the Black Lives Matter movement, Zaya couldnt paint a concrete image of the area in her mind before her visit.

Indeed, the CHOPs composition has been thoroughly difficult to nail down from the outside looking in. Originally called the CHAZ for Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone, the area (including a police precinct) was occupied by protesters starting on June 9, after long and occasionally violent demonstrations against the murder of George Floyd. Law enforcement was not allowed inside, as street access was blocked off with concrete barriers and monitored by a group of volunteers. This is where the facts largely end, and speculation begins: a New York Post article called the area a continuing experiment in anarchy, chaos and brute-force criminality, while a piece by Vox stated that the neighborhood has flourished since police left the area to protesters.

Zaya was already skeptical of most mainstream news outlets and their coverage of the CHOP. There also isnt that much media coverage on the good parts of it. All the [mainstream news] covers is when the police go off. They dont cover what leads up to that. She had seen Facebook posts from friends and family that condemned the protest, but Zaya was wary of accepting those statements at face value. Her hour-long visit on June 21 convinced her that these accusations were unwarranted.

Heading south past the tents in Cal Anderson Park, Zaya was surprised to discover that there was more to the CHOP than just an encampment: the nearby Bobby Morris Field had been occupied as well, serving as a multi-purpose space for protestors. There were people doing organized yoga there were people teaching each other how to defend themselves in a fight, there were people just playing music. Just people running around playing games. There were tents lining the edges of the field but nothing in the middle. Zaya also recalled a distinct image of Black women practicing yoga on the Bobby Morris Field, surrounded by a chain of protestors who formed to protect them from any outside interference.

Beyond the Bobby Morris Field is East Pine Street, home of the now-defunct East Precinct of the Seattle Police Department. Many vendors populated the street to create a makeshift farmers market, giving away free food and supplies to anyone who approached them. In Zayas eyes, the CHOP appeared to be self-sufficient, even featuring a community garden that hosted a variety of crops. Everything you could ask for is there supplies, a place to sleep, community, self-defense.

The East Precinct itself was unoccupied. Zaya had taken photos of the site, which was boarded up with plywood and covered in graffiti that carried a wide range of messages. One reads, Fire Steven McNew, referencing an officer who shot and killed a pregnant Black woman, Charleena Lyles, in 2017 after she had reported a burglary. Another states, If Seattle is so progressive, decriminalize entheogens and plant medicine just like Denver, Oakland and Santa Cruz have done. The most widely publicized graffiti from the precinct is likely the sign that adorns its entrance, which now reads, Seattle People Department.

Several lawn chairs had been set up outside the precinct for guards to watch over the area. In Zayas photos, two of these guards can be seen talking: one, in a black hoodie and sweatpants, is looking at something on a smartphone. The other, wearing a black shirt and pink shorts, drinks from a disposable coffee cup. Neither appears to be armed. Both are wearing crocs.

Zaya was quick to mention how this image contradicts those depicting militancy at the CHOP. You know how [the guards] get portrayed on media as these really intimidating, scary people who are strapped and guarding the entrances thats just not the case. [One of them] was just this chill white dude, sitting in a lawn chair just saying Hi to everyone, with a little radio on his belt. Thats it. It is worth noting that demonstrators within the CHOP have mentioned guards carrying concealed weapons before, but Zaya did not observe the presence of any weapons while on site.

After exploring the site, reading graffiti messages, talking with demonstrators and approaching vendors, Zaya returned the way she came, passing a 30-foot-tall Black Lives Matter fist in the Bobby Morris Field. Her time in the CHOP was brief, but its impact would last far beyond the flight home.

Im sure there was stuff going on behind the scenes, but out in public, it was just people living. Something Zaya noted during her time in the CHOP was how the politics of its existence were only a small percentage of the conversation taking place within the community. Many people were just going about their day, taking yoga classes or growing crops amid the backdrop of an ongoing protest.

Zaya said that the CHOP could be something akin to a communist society, pointing out that labels and economic status had no real impact on how one was treated within the CHOP, which largely operated without money. The emphasis on communal bonds was revitalizing for Zaya, who had felt weighed down by the animosity of living in cities and suburbs. I think what [made it a revitalizing experience] was the innocence and the pure community nobody cared what you looked like, nothing mattered. You dont really get that sense of community anymore in our society. Especially [during the pandemic].

While the makeshift nature of CHOPs vendors and gardens has dissuaded some from accepting its community model, Zaya noted a demographic that directly benefitted from open access to consolidated resources: the homeless population. It gave a safe haven for a lot of homeless people to get food. Have a community to talk to. Be safe. Not worry about getting jumped every night when they go to bed.

The CHOP was disbanded by police on July 1, less than a month after it was established and a mere 10 days after Zayas visit. Honestly, I did expect the CHOP to get dismantled, Zaya noted. They had taken up so much space. Especially since its a police precinct, you know, [the police] have got big egos. They werent gonna let [demonstrators] keep it for too long.

The final days of the CHOP saw a shooting that resulted in the death of a 16-year-old one of four shootings that took place in the CHOP and its surrounding area. Many have criticized the CHOP for this reason, deeming it a failed experiment and proof that an anti-police or self-policing society cannot function. Zaya doesnt see it that way, stating in reference to the latest shooting: Youre gonna get crazy people no matter where you go. You cant blame the entire CHOP for one persons actions.

She also rebutted with an example of success in demilitarizing police: a 55% drop in NYPD arrests in 2014 that generally saw similar or lower crime rates, despite the drastic decrease in police presence. I personally dont think we should absolutely abolish the police, but I do think we should defund and reform the police, she clarified.

The CHOP has remained a topic of intense discourse and controversy, but Zaya still believes in its promise: It set out to be a safe haven. And I think it was successful in that. For the time it was there most people greatly benefitted from the community that they had made. They were a part of something again. The conversation has continued with attempts to mirror the CHOP in cities like Portland, where a friend of Zaya is still actively working to establish an occupation with similar goals in mind.

While the zone itself may no longer exist, Zayas visit endures in her mind, as a reminder to actively manifest and advocate for ideals that fueled the CHOP in the first place. Me going to the CHOP I did absolutely nothing. I didnt participate. I just visited. You need to actively do things on your own to make a difference.

No death and an enhanced life: Is the future transhuman …

The aims of the transhumanist movement are summed up by Mark OConnell in his book To Be a Machine, which last week won the Wellcome Book prize. It is their belief that we can and should eradicate ageing as a cause of death; that we can and should use technology to augment our bodies and our minds; that we can and should merge with machines, remaking ourselves, finally, in the image of our own higher ideals.

The idea of technologically enhancing our bodies is not new. But the extent to which transhumanists take the concept is. In the past, we made devices such as wooden legs, hearing aids, spectacles and false teeth. In future, we might use implants to augment our senses so we can detect infrared or ultraviolet radiation directly or boost our cognitive processes by connecting ourselves to memory chips. Ultimately, by merging man and machine, science will produce humans who have vastly increased intelligence, strength, and lifespans; a near embodiment of gods.

Is that a desirable goal? Advocates of transhumanism believe there are spectacular rewards to be reaped from going beyond the natural barriers and limitations that constitute an ordinary human being. But to do so would raise a host of ethical problems and dilemmas. As OConnells book indicates, the ambitions of transhumanism are now rising up our intellectual agenda. But this is a debate that is only just beginning.

There is no doubt that human enhancement is becoming more and more sophisticated as will be demonstrated at the exhibition The Future Starts Here which opens at the V&A museum in London this week. Items on display will include powered clothing made by the US company Seismic. Worn under regular clothes, these suits mimic the biomechanics of the human body and give users typically older people discrete strength when getting out of a chair or climbing stairs, or standing for long periods.

In many cases these technological or medical advances are made to help the injured, sick or elderly but are then adopted by the healthy or young to boost their lifestyle or performance. The drug erythropoietin (EPO) increases red blood cell production in patients with severe anaemia but has also been taken up as an illicit performance booster by some athletes to improve their bloodstreams ability to carry oxygen to their muscles.

And that is just the start, say experts. We are now approaching the time when, for some kinds of track sports such as the 100-metre sprint, athletes who run on carbon-fibre blades will be able outperform those who run on natural legs, says Blay Whitby, an artificial intelligence expert at Sussex University.

The question is: when the technology reaches this level, will it be ethical to allow surgeons to replace someones limbs with carbon-fibre blades just so they can win gold medals? Whitby is sure many athletes will seek such surgery. However, if such an operation came before any ethics committee that I was involved with, I would have none of it. It is a repulsive idea to remove a healthy limb for transient gain.

Not everyone in the field agrees with this view, however. Cybernetics expert Kevin Warwick, of Coventry University, sees no problem in approving the removal of natural limbs and their replacement with artificial blades. What is wrong with replacing imperfect bits of your body with artificial parts that will allow you to perform better or which might allow you to live longer? he says.

Warwick is a cybernetics enthusiast who, over the years, has had several different electronic devices implanted into his body. One allowed me to experience ultrasonic inputs. It gave me a bat sense, as it were. I also interfaced my nervous system with my computer so that I could control a robot hand and experience what it was touching. I did that when I was in New York, but the hand was in a lab in England.

Such interventions enhance the human condition, Warwick insists, and indicate the kind of future humans might have when technology augments performance and the senses. Some might consider this unethical. But even doubters such as Whitby acknowledge the issues are complex. Is it ethical to take two girls under the age of five and train them to play tennis every day of their lives until they have the musculature and skeletons of world champions? he asks. From this perspective the use of implants or drugs to achieve the same goal does not look so deplorable.

This last point is a particular issue for those concerned with the transhumanist movement. They believe that modern technology ultimately offers humans the chance to live for aeons, unshackled as they would be from the frailties of the human body. Failing organs would be replaced by longer-lasting high-tech versions just as carbon-fibre blades could replace the flesh, blood and bone of natural limbs. Thus we would end humanitys reliance on our frail version 1.0 human bodies into a far more durable and capable 2.0 counterpart, as one group has put it.

However, the technology needed to achieve these goals relies on as yet unrealised developments in genetic engineering, nanotechnology and many other sciences and may take many decades to reach fruition. As a result, many advocates such as the US inventor and entrepreneur Ray Kurzweil, nanotechnology pioneer Eric Drexler and PayPal founder and venture capitalist Peter Thiel have backed the idea of having their bodies stored in liquid nitrogen and cryogenically preserved until medical science has reached the stage when they can be revived and their resurrected bodies augmented and enhanced.

Four such cryogenic facilities have now been constructed: three in the US and one in Russia. The largest is the Alcor Life Extension Foundation in Arizona whose refrigerators store more than 100 bodies (nevertheless referred to as patients by staff) in the hope of their subsequent thawing and physiological resurrection. It is a place built to house the corpses of optimists, as OConnell says in To Be a Machine.

Not everyone is convinced about the feasibility of such technology or about its desirability. I was once interviewed by a group of cryonic enthusiasts based in California called the society for the abolition of involuntary death, recalls the Astronomer Royal Martin Rees. I told them Id rather end my days in an English churchyard than a Californian refrigerator. They derided me as a deathist really old-fashioned.

For his part, Rees believes that those who choose to freeze themselves in the hope of being eventually thawed out would be burdening future generations expected to care for these newly defrosted individuals. It is not clear how much consideration they would deserve, Rees adds.

Ultimately, adherents of transhumanism envisage a day when humans will free themselves of all corporeal restraints. Kurzweil and his followers believe this turning point will be reached around the year 2030, when biotechnology will enable a union between humans and genuinely intelligent computers and AI systems. The resulting human-machine mind will become free to roam a universe of its own creation, uploading itself at will on to a suitably powerful computational substrate. We will become gods, or more likely star children similar to the one at the end of 2001: A Space Odyssey.

These are remote and, for many people, very fanciful goals. And the fact that much of the impetus for establishing such extreme forms of transhuman technology comes from California and Silicon Valley is not lost on critics. Tesla and SpaceX founder Elon Musk, the entrepreneur who wants to send the human race to Mars, also believes that to avoid becoming redundant in the face of the development of artificial intelligence, humans must merge with machines to enhance our own intellect.

This is a part of the world where the culture of youth is followed with fanatical intensity and where ageing is feared more acutely than anywhere else on the planet. Hence the overpowering urge to try to use technology to overcome its effects.

It is also one of the worlds richest regions, and many of those who question the values of the transhuman movement warn it risks creating technologies that will only create deeper gulfs in an already divided society where only some people will be able to afford to become enhanced while many other lose out.

The position is summed up by Whitby. History is littered with the evil consequences of one group of humans believing they are superior to another group of humans, he said. Unfortunately in the case of enhanced humans they will be genuinely superior. We need to think about the implications before it is too late.

For their part, transhumanists argue that the costs of enhancement will inevitably plummet and point to the example of the mobile phone, which was once so expensive only the very richest could afford one, but which today is a universal gadget owned by virtually every member of society. Such ubiquity will become a feature of technologies for augmenting men and women, advocates insist.

Many of these issues seem remote, but experts warn that the implications involved need to be debated as a matter of urgency. An example is provided by the artificial hand being developed by Newcastle University. Current prosthetic limbs are limited by their speed of response. But project leader Kianoush Nazarpour believes it will soon be possible to create bionic hands that can assess an object and instantly decide what kind of grip it should adopt.

It will be of enormous benefit, but its use raises all sorts of issues. Who will own it: the wearer or the NHS? And if it is used to carry a crime, who ultimately will be responsible for its control? We are not thinking about these concerns and that is a worry.

The position is summed up by bioethicist professor Andy Miah of Salford University.

Transhumanism is valuable and interesting philosophically because it gets us to think differently about the range of things that humans might be able to do but also because it gets us to think critically about some of those limitations that we think are there but can in fact be overcome, he says. We are talking about the future of our species, after all.

LimbsThe artificial limbs of Luke Skywalker and the Six Million Dollar Man are works of fiction. In reality, bionic limbs have suffered from multiple problems: becoming rigid mid-action, for example. But new generations of sensors are now making it possible for artificial legs and arms to behave in much more complex, human-like ways.

SensesThe light that is visible to humans excludes both infrared and ultra-violet radiation. However, researchers are working on ways of extending the wavelengths of radiation that we can detect, allowing us to see more of the world - and in a different light. Ideas like these are particularly popular with military researchers trying to create cyborg soldiers.

PowerPowered suits or exoskeletons are wearable mobile machines that allow people to move their limbs with increased strength and endurance. Several versions are being developed by the US army, while medical researchers are working on easy-to-wear versions that would be able to help people with severe medical conditions or who have lost limbs to move about naturally.

BrainsTranshumanists envisage the day when memory chips and neural pathways are actually embedded into peoples brains, thus bypassing the need to use external devices such as computers in order to access data and to make complicated calculations. The line between humanity and machines will become increasingly blurred.

COVID-19 Vaccines Make Progress, But Will People Be Willing To Get It? – KCBS

Related: Fauci: 'Considerable Concern' People Won't Trust Vaccine

An experimental coronavirus vaccine out of Oxford University is showing promise on two counts.

British researchers partnering with the drug company AstraZeneca first began testing the vaccine in April in about 1,000 people, about half of whom got the experimental vaccine. In research published Monday, scientists said their experimental vaccine produced neutralizing antibodies as well as a reaction in the body's T-cells, which help fight off the virus.

The small scale test was performed mainly to determine if the vaccine is safe, but researchers say the early result is encouraging.

But despite major efforts to develop a vaccine for the SARS-CoV-2 virus, recent polls show that as many as 50% of Americans would not get the vaccine.

"I certainly can understand that given the political background to this,"said Dr. John Swartzberg, infectious disease and public health expert with UC Berkeley. "Distrust comes from the distrust of the White House and all of the messages weve been getting out of the White House and theyve created such confusion."

Dr. Swartzberg saidthat there are a variety of reasons why people might hesitate to get the vaccine. Skepticism is high among Black Americans who have a history of being mistreated by the medical establishment, "specifically with the infamous Tuskegee experiments of earlier in the 20th century."

Others may not want to be first in line.

"There will be a lot of people initially reticent. But as people start to see, 'Wow this vaccine works and nobodys having any problems with it,'more and more people will get it,"he said.

But Dr. Swartzberg does not anticipate that this will create a major barrier to slowing the spread of the virus, as the low demand could match the initial low supply. "Frankly, thatll work out just fine. Because its not like once we announce we have a vaccine all of a sudden well have enough for everybody in America much less everybody on the planet."

He estimates that a safe and effective vaccine could be ready by spring of 2021.

Mondays MLB: Marlins Rojas says team is poised to make big progress – The Detroit News

Steven Wine, Associated Press Published 9:06 p.m. ET July 20, 2020 | Updated 4:35 a.m. ET July 21, 2020

Miami Marlins shortstop Miguel Rojas talked Monday about the ways the 2020 season will be different for players, with little clubhouse interaction, seats in the stands and postgame meals via hotel room service.

Another change: Rojas believes the Marlins will be good.

He joined Miami in 2015 and has since endured five consecutive losing seasons. But like the teams management and some outside observers, Rojas says the Marlins are poised for a big leap forward in Year 3 of Derek Jeters rebuilding program.

Im really excited about the starting pitching, and our offense is way better than the last couple of years, Rojas said. The whole organization has been doing a great job bringing the young prospects along. It doesnt matter if they dont make the club right now. We know we have those guys waiting.

Fans will get their first look on TV only when the Marlins play an exhibition game Tuesday at Atlanta. They begin the season Friday at Philadelphia.

Dr. Anthony Fauci, the countrys top infectious disease expert, will throw out the ceremonial first pitch at the first game of Major League Baseballs pandemic-delayed regular season.

The Washington Nationals announced Monday that Fauci a self-described fan of the reigning World Series champions accepted the teams invitation to have the pregame honor Thursday night.

The Nationals host the New York Yankees to open the season nearly four months after it originally was scheduled to begin. Spring training was halted in March because of the COVID-19 outbreak and teams resumed preparing to play this month.

In their new release about Faucis role at the opener, the Nationals refer to him as a true champion for our country during the pandemic and throughout his distinguished career.

Right-hander Chris Paddack of the San Diego Padres earned his first career opening day start and will oppose Madison Bumgarner of the Arizona Diamondbacks on Friday night at Petco Park.

A little cowboy showdown, Paddack said. Im going to have to use my imagination and hear the 55,000 people cheering my name.

The Milwaukee Brewers placed left-hander Brett Anderson on the injured list due to a blister on his left index finger. He had been slated to start the Brewers second game of the season, Saturday against the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field.

Oakland Athletics left-hander A.J. Puk, a top prospect, went on the injured list and traveled to Los Angeles to be examined by Dr. Neal ElAttrache for a shoulder strain. Puks shoulder also bothered him during spring training.

Outfielder Scott Schebler was designated for assignment by the Cincinnati Reds, who selected the contract of left-hander Brooks Raley from teams alternate training site.

Schebler hit 30 home runs for Cincinnati in 2017 but only two last year, when he battled a shoulder injury.

The Atlanta Braves signed infielder Matt Adams to a minor-league contract, giving the team an option for a left-handed hitter. The move comes after Adams exercised the opt-out clause in his minor league deal with the NL East rival New York Mets.

Brewers reliever Justin Grimm and outfielder-first baseman Logan Morrison learned they made the team after reporting to camp as non-roster invitees.

The news was particularly sweet for Grimm, who made at least 50 appearances for the Chicago Cubs every season from 2014 to 2017 but has bounced around a few organizations since and spent all of 2019 in the minors.

It was a long year last year, Grimm said. There were times I was ready to walk away from the game, just to be honest with you. But Im just very fortunate that I have people around me who care, who helped me navigate those emotions.

The Colorado Rockies have a social distancing plane plan.

Thats just one of the protocols in place as the Rockies embark on their first trip of the season. Theyre scheduled to play two exhibition games starting Tuesday at Texas new $1.2 billion stadium before opening the season against the Rangers on Friday.

There are a lot of things in place that will sustain health and safety, manager Bud Black said. I cant go through them all.

One of them is a social distancing blueprint while up in the air.

There wont be a lot of interaction on the plane of players and coaches, which during the normal times youd see conversations going on about baseball or about other things, Black said. Its a great time on the plane to talk to a player or catch up with guys. You probably wont see a lot of that this season.

USC football progress report: Kyle Ford has to wait, again – Reign of Troy

USC football receiver Kyle Ford. Alicia de Artola/Reign of Troy

There has been no shortage of great receivers for USC football over the past couple of decades. Kyle Ford hopes to become the next great.

The path for the former four-star receiver hasnt been easy though. It wont get any more simple with a new injury to get over.

What has Ford been through and where is he heading from here?

Kyle Ford was the crown jewel of USCs 2019 recruiting class, committing at the All-American Bowl in January. Despite a turbulent month including coaches leaving and players like Bru McCoy transferring, Ford stuck to his pledge and signed as the highest-ranked player in the class for the Trojans.

MORE:Solomon Tuliaupupu finally ready to take the field

As a dominant 6-foot-2 receiver from Orange Lutheran, Ford was No. 38 in the 247Sports composite, No. 6 at his position and No. 4 in California.

However, there were concerns around his health. Ford suffered a season-ending knee injury midway through his senior season.

That knee injury limited Ford for most of the 2019 season. Arriving in the summer, his rehab resulted in a redshirt season.

Thanks to the altered redshirt rule, there was opportunity for Ford to see some action as a true freshman. Once he was cleared medically, the receiver suited up for four games to end the season and even caught a 20-yard touchdown pass against Oregon.

Michael Pittmans graduation opened up a starting spot at wide receiver for 2020 and Ford was one of the favorites to vie for that role. After all, hed been compared to JuJu Smith-Schuster coming out of high school. The fit seemed just right.

Sadly, Ford will have to wait to follow in Smith-Schusters footsteps. During a workout this offseason he suffered another devastating knee injury. The torn ligaments are likely to keep him out for most of the campaign.

MORE:USC commits impacted by delayed high school season

(If the coronavirus pandemic results in the further delay of the season, Ford could benefit more than anyone. A little extra time could be the difference between a full slate and none for the redshirt freshman.)

Like Smith-Schuster, the biggest knock on Fords NFL prospects may come down to speed. On the plus side, hes got an NFL-type body and the skillset to dominate in the passing game. Productivity is the key first. Then itll be all about convincing scouts he has enough quickness to get by. If he does that, a first-round grade could follow.

PSRC Board of Educations Finance Committee makes progress on issues related to reopening schools – The Robesonian

July 20, 2020

RALEIGH On Saturday night, Jennifer Clapton stood in a brightly lit bowling alley, watching her autistic, 22-year-old son laugh. He threw ball after ball down the shining, wooden lane, shouting with glee each time he hit the pins.

It was the last night he would bowl. For awhile, anyway.

Clapton fought tears.

In Roanoke Rapids, a struggling small town alongside Interstate 95 in northeastern North Carolina, theres not much to do, or so Clapton will tell you. But in March 2019, locals Elizabeth and Timothy Robinson bought Fairwood Lanes, a rundown bowling alley on Old Farm Road. The Robinsons turned it into a gathering spot for the community. They visited 65 bowling alleys around the country, gathering ideas. They handpicked every table, decoration, kitchen appliance, and bowling machine. They opened a restaurant Misfits Bar and Grill where neighbors gather for pizza, steak tips, beer, and even craft cocktails. They launched a Superheroes Bowling League for special-needs people like Claptons son, Jordan.

It brought joy to Roanoke Rapids, Clapton told Carolina Journal, turning from her son so he wouldnt see her cry. It brought friends for Jordan. It brought support for her family.

Now, with a recent order from the N.C. Supreme Court, its all unraveling. Fairwood Lanes closed its doors at midnight on Saturday. The Robinsons are uncertain when theyll reopen.

North Carolina bowling alleys, which sued Gov. Roy Cooper in June over his prolonged COVID-19 shutdown, won an initial victory July 7 when Judge James Gale allowed them to reopen. The Robinsons rejoiced. But, one week later, the N.C. Supreme Court ordered bowling alleys to close again while it reviewed an appeal from Cooper. Democrats hold a 6-1 majority on the states highest court, with the chief justice and one associate justice appointed by Cooper. This means the Democratic governor is unlikely to face partisan opposition from the Supreme Court.

For people like Clapton and the Robinsons who live and work nearly 100 miles from Raleigh the effects of that power isnt political. Its personal.

I know theres a pandemic right now, Clapton said. I understand that we cant just go out and do everything. But here [Fairwood Lanes], theyve done everything to make this place safe. How is going to Walmart safe, but bringing my son bowling isnt?

Carolina Journal heard that sentiment from many at the bowling alley. Frustration over closing. Frustration over lost jobs and uncertain unemployment benefits. Frustration over the governors blanket reopening rules, and the Supreme Courts move to follow his orders.

That frustration could be turned to action in the November election, where three Supreme Court seats will be contested. Chief Justice Cheri Beasley was appointed by Cooper to fill the courts highest seat when Republican Chief Justice Mark Martin retired in February 2019. Shes running against Justice Paul Newby, the only Republican currently on the high court. Two judges from the N.C. Court of Appeals, Democrat Lucy Inman and Republican Phil Berger Jr., are racing for the Supreme Courts second seat. Republican Tamara Barringer, a former state senator, is challenging appointed incumbent Justice Mark Davis.

Concerned voters should pay attention to how individual judges vote in the bowling alley case, said Jon Guze, director of legal studies at the John Locke Foundation. The governor is trying to win the lawsuit without responding to industry safety plans. The Bowling Proprietors Association of the Carolinas and Georgia which brought the case against Cooper offered a detailed, thorough proposal for ensuring safety, Guze said. But the governor didnt bother providing evidence that bowling was risky, or that safety rules wouldnt minimize that risk.

Instead, he simply insisted that he didnt need to provide evidence or arguments because his emergency orders should be reviewed under the strict scrutiny standard and should, therefore, be presumed to be lawful, Guze said.

Review standards are important, Guze said, because, in cases where a person challenges government, courts often presume that whatever the government does is lawful unless the citizen can show that there is no conceivable rational basis for the action.

In the bowling alley case, Cooper challenged Judge Gales review, asking the Supreme Court to decide whether the judge used the wrong lens to view the case, Guze said. At its core, the issue comes down to whether judges will defer to the word of the government, or the word of the North Carolinians challenging it.

[The justices] responses to the question raised by Gov. Cooper in his request for Supreme Court review will tell us something very important about their attitudes towards constitutional rights and the rule of law, Guze said. In our free republic, everyone not just ordinary citizens, but government agents as well should have to obey the Constitution and the General Statutes.

Gale referred to a legal standard called reasonable relationship, as opposed to rational basis, in his opinion on bowling alleys. Simply put, its easier for the bowling alleys to win under the reasonable relationship standard. The Supreme Court could have allowed Gales order to stand as the case works its way through the legal process. Instead the justices accepted Coopers request to block the trial court order. That means closing bowling alleys again. And so they did.

The next step? The justices will review Coopers appeal of Judge Gales order. Cooper and the bowling alleys have until Aug. 19 to file all arguments and paperwork in the case. Its unclear whether the Supreme Court will hold a hearing, or decide the case based solely on filed arguments.

Bowling alleys were initially allowed to reopen so long as they limited risks and imposed safety measures. For business owners like the Robinsons, those measures cost thousands of dollars. They installed glass dividers and hand sanitizers between bowling lanes. Wore face masks. Cut capacity. Cleaned every surface. Again and again.

Even the shoes.

But the fight with Cooper has siphoned the last of their energy. And money.

In the colored light of the arcade machines, seated at a table by the bowling lanes, the Robinsons told CJ the whole story: about buying Fairwood Lanes, restoring it, opening doors for the first time in October 2019.

Weve poured our hearts and souls into this place, Elizabeth said.

It shows. The Robinsons can tell you about their search for the deep fryer in the kitchen, or how far they had to travel New Jersey just to find someone to fix bowling machines. They can tell you about Elizabeths hand-painted carousel horse decorations, or about the Tweety Bird print hanging on the wall in front of them. Most of all, they can tell you about the Superheroes League, about how many smiles it brings, and about the families its drawn together.

A few months ago, the Robinsons thought they would survive the COVID-19 shutdown. They did everything possible to keep 20 staffers. A handful left to collect unemployment, but most stayed on, Timothy said.

The goal was never to pick a fight with the governor, Elizabeth said. She wants to remain impartial. Do her job. Keep people safe and happy. But when the rules didnt make sense, and livelihoods were at stake, a lawsuit seemed the only solution.

Now that the lawsuit looks futile, whats the next move? CJ asked.

Shut down, send all of our employees away, and hope they come back, Timothy said.

They hope to reopen, whenever Cooper allows that. If they do, Clapton will return with her son. Until then, shell stay home. Shell try to explain to Jordan why he cant see his friends, and shell consider her November voting decision one that will affect her familys future.

Im most frustrated with Roy Cooper, she said as the lights dimmed, the music rose, and the evening crowd settled in for a final night at Fairwood Lanes. Im not even a Republican, and Im afraid hes going to make me vote that way.

Trey Songz slams Kanye West for standing ‘in the way of progress’ after controversial rally – Music News

Trey Songz took aim at Kanye West for being "in the way of progress" after the rapper shared his controversial views on revered anti-slavery activist Harriet Tubman.

During his first presidential rally in Charleston, South Carolina on Sunday, Kanye claimed former slave Tubman, who fled a plantation before returning 19 times to assist at least 70 others, did not free slaves, insisting, "She just had them work for other white people!"

Sharing a clip from the rally on his Instagram page, which features a woman saying, "Yo, we're leaving right now," following the slave comments, Trey wrote: "They been sayin man Trey need to call these n****s before he just put em online blastin.

"Ye you in the way of progress foreal (sic), how you turn this goofy from who you were? Im so confused, whoever got his number need to call him."

Trey was one of many of Kanye's musical peers to slam the star, with rapper Q-Tip also weighing in by simply posted an image of Tubman along with the caption #Hero, while Noname didn't hold back and tweeted: KEEP HARRIET TUBMAN NAME OUT YOUR F**KING MOUTH!!!!!!!

Taking to Twitter, fans slammed the rapper-turned-politician, who suffers from bipolar disorder, with The View co-host Meghan McCain writing: "Kanye West needs serious help, not media coverage."

Kanye has yet to respond to his critics on Twitter - however, he did share two sketches of the White House, with the worlds "Vision" and "The West Wing", alongside the hashtag "2020VISION".
