Texas Tech astrophysics researcher has projects approved with Hubble Space Telescope – LubbockOnline.com

For A-J Media

For Texas Tech and the Hubble Space Telescope, three may be this year's magic number. After all, there have now been three exciting events this academic year tying the two together.

First, Paul Bennet became the first Texas Tech graduate student to be awarded Hubble observation time as a principal investigator.

Second, Texas Tech was selected to host a special commemorative event later this fall in honor of the Hubble Space Telescope's three decades in space.

And now, Tech postdoctoral research fellow Liliana Rivera Sandoval has achieved the very rare distinction of being awarded two observing times on the Hubble Space Telescope in the upcoming cycle, together with a grant to analyze existing observations. In fact, Rivera Sandoval is one of only 11 researchers worldwide to have been granted at least three proposals in the same observing cycle in the last decade.

"Since Hubble's proposal-selection process is highly competitive, it is very rare for the same person to win three awards as a PI in the same program cycle," said Sung-Won Lee, professor and chair of the Department of Physics & Astronomy. "It is a highly recognized achievement for Liliana to receive multiple observing times on the Hubble Space Telescope."

Rivera Sandoval will use her observing times on the telescope for three different research projects. In collaboration with fellow researchers at Texas Tech, across the U.S., and in Canada, Europe and Australia, Rivera Sandoval will study accreting white dwarfs and other compact binaries in globular clusters.

White dwarfs

In the life cycle of sun-like stars, or a few times in more massive ones, the white dwarf stage represents the end of their evolution. Stars, like our sun, eventually run out of nuclear fuel and shrink to smaller, fainter stars about the size of Earth. But with the mass of a sun-sized object packed into such a comparatively tiny volume, the gravity on the surface of a white dwarf is several hundred thousand times that of Earth.

Most stars typically exist in pairs called "binary systems." But what happens when both

stars in a binary system are white dwarfs? If the stars are close enough, the gravity of the more massive white dwarf can pull matter away from its companion star, leading to what astronomers call the accretion process.

A few dozen such binaries have been identified in our solar neighborhood, but never in other environments of our galaxy. That's what two of Rivera Sandoval's projects intend to investigate.

"Until now, these binaries have been predicted to exist in numerous amounts in globular clusters due to the high stellar densities there, but none have been confirmed so far," Rivera Sandoval said. "First, we want to confirm whether these ultracompact, accreting double-white dwarf binaries exist in globular clusters, as has been theorized, and in what amount so we can compare to models.

"We also want to investigate their properties and their mass-accretion process. We aim to explore whether there are differences with systems in the solar neighborhood, as that will give us direct clues on how dense stellar environments affect the creation and evolution of these binaries."

Because of their short orbits, typically less than one hour, double-white dwarf binary systems also are expected to be sources of low-frequency gravitational waves. Gravitational waves are different from electromagnetic waves and represent another tool astronomers can use to study exotic objects in the universe. So, by detecting these systems as gravitational wave sources, scientists ultimately can obtain important information about their components and their history.

"These binaries also are relevant because they are potential progenitors of supernovae type Ia, the type of supernovae that are used to measure distances," Rivera Sandoval said. "So, by using ultraviolet observations with the Hubble Space Telescope, we hope not only to confirm their existence in globular clusters for the first time, but also to discover many of these systems.

"Getting Hubble Space Telescope observations was crucial for our projects because of the unique filters and instruments it has, but also because it is the only telescope capable of resolving single stars in crowded stellar environments."

Cataclysmic variables

Rivera Sandoval's third project surveys globular clusters for a different type of binary system. Known as cataclysmic variables (CVs), these are binary systems in which a white dwarf accretes mass from a sun-like star.

"Unlike the double-white dwarf binaries, CVs have been confirmed in globular clusters, but many questions are still open," Rivera Sandoval explained.

Among those questions is why the numbers of detected CV systems and the number predicted to exist are substantially different. One potential explanation for this difference is observational biases. This means the way scientists look for these CVs can affect how many they find.

"With our project, we aim to eliminate these biases for the first time," Rivera Sandoval said. "We expect to identify the missing CV population by implementing a technique that uses different types of Hubble Space Telescope images.

"It also is unclear whether there are one or two different populations of CVs in a given cluster, and our survey will allow us to investigate that. We will study different clusters with different properties from each other. Furthermore, we don't know the orbital period distribution of CVs in globular clusters, but we intend to explore that with the Hubble Space Telescope data as well."

The project also will allow Rivera Sandoval and her team to study other types of compact binaries, such as those harboring neutron stars or even black holes.

"This is an academic dream come true," she said.

Fresh Twist to Debate Over Universes Age From New View of the Oldest Light in the Universe – SciTechDaily

Atacama Cosmology Telescope findings suggest the universe is 13.8 billion years old.

From a mountain high in Chiles Atacama Desert, astronomers with the National Science Foundations Atacama Cosmology Telescope have taken a fresh look at the oldest light in the universe. Their new observations, plus a bit of cosmic geometry, suggest that the universe is 13.77 billion years old, give or take 40 million years.

The new estimate matches the one provided by the standard model of the universe and measurements of the same light made by the Planck satellite, a space-based observatory that ran from 2009-2013.

This adds a fresh twist to an ongoing debate in the astrophysics community, saidSimone Aiola, first author of one of two new papers on the findings posted July 15 to arXiv.org. The trouble is that research teams measuring the movements of galaxies have calculated that the universe is hundreds of millions of years younger than the Planck team predicted. That discrepancy suggested that a new model for the universe might be needed, and sparked concerns that one of the sets of measurements might be incorrect.

Now weve come up with an answer where Planck and the Atacama Cosmology Telescope agree, said Aiola, a researcher at the Flatiron Institutes Center for Computational Astrophysics in New York City. It speaks to the fact that these difficult measurements are reliable.

A portion of a new picture of the oldest light in the universe taken by the Atacama Cosmology Telescope. This part covers a section of the sky 50 times the moons width, representing a region of space 20 billion light-years across. The light, emitted just 380,000 years after the Big Bang, varies in polarization (represented here by redder or bluer colors). Astrophysicists used the spacing between these variations to calculate a new estimate for the universes age. Credit: Image courtesy of ACT Collaboration

The age of the universe also reveals how fast the cosmos is expanding, a number called the Hubble constant. The Atacama measurements suggest a Hubble constant of 67.6 kilometers per second per megaparsec. This result agrees almost exactly with the previous estimate of 67.4 by the Planck satellite team, but its slower than the 74 inferred from the measurements of galaxies.

Making this independent measurement is really exciting because theres a mystery in the field, and this helps us sharpen our understanding of that mystery, said Jeff McMahon, an associate professor of astronomy and astrophysics at the University of Chicago who led the design of thedetectors and other new technologies used to make this measurement. This confirms the ongoing discrepancy. And we still have much more data to analyze, so this is just the beginning.

Assoc. Prof. Jeff McMahon

The close agreement between the Atacama Cosmology Telescope and Planck results and the standard cosmological model is bittersweet, Aiola said: Its good to know that our model right now is robust, but it would have been nice to see a hint of something new. Still, the disagreement with the 2019 study of the motions of galaxies maintains the possibility that unknown physics may be at play, he said.

Like the Planck satellite and its earthbound cousin the South Pole Telescope, the Atacama Telescope peers at the afterglow of the Big Bang. This light, known as the cosmic microwave background, or CMB, marks a time 380,000 years after the universes birth, when protons and electrons joined to form the first atoms. Before that time, the cosmos was opaque to light.

If scientists can estimate how far light from the CMB traveled to reach Earth, they can calculate the universes age. Thats easier said than done, though. Judging cosmic distances from Earth is hard. So instead, scientists measure the angle in the sky between two distant objects, with Earth and the two objects forming a cosmic triangle. If scientists also know the physical separation between those objects, they can use high school geometry to estimate the distance of the objects from Earth.

Subtle variations in the CMBs glow offer anchor points to form the other two vertices of the triangle. Those variations in temperature and polarization resulted from quantum fluctuations in the early universe that got amplified by the expanding universe into regions of varying density. (The denser patches would go on to form galaxy clusters.) Scientists have a strong enough understanding of the universes early years to know that these variations in the CMB should typically be spaced out every billion light-years for temperature and half that for polarization. (For scale, our Milky Way galaxy is about 200,000 light-years in diameter.)

The Atacama Cosmology Telescope measured the CMB fluctuations with unprecedented resolution and sky coverage, taking a closer look at the polarization of the light. The Planck satellite measured the same light, but by measuring its polarization in higher fidelity, the new picture from Atacama reveals more of the oldest patterns weve ever seen, said Suzanne Staggs, the telescopes principal investigator and the Henry deWolf Smyth Professor of Physics at Princeton University.

This measurement was possible thanks to new technology designed and built by McMahons team.Basically, we figured out how to make the detectors measure two colors and to pack as many into each camera as possible, McMahon said. Then we developed new lenses out of metamaterials. (Metamaterials are a type of material thats engineered to produce properties that dont exist naturally.)

From conception to deployment at the telescope to analysis, the process has spanned nearly 10 years, McMahon said. Working with this amazing team to develop this project all the way from concept sketches to producing results at the forefront of cosmology, has been absolutely fantastic.

Prof. Wendy Freedman explains a new method for measuring the expansion of the universe.

Sara Simon, now at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory, made significant contributions to detector design; UChicago graduate student Joey Golec developed methods to fabricate the metamaterial optics; and UChicago graduate student Maya Mallaby-Kay is now working to make the datasets public.

As the Atacama Cosmology Telescope continues making observations, astronomers will have an even clearer picture of the CMB and a more exact idea of how long ago the cosmos began. The team will also scour those observations for signs of physics that doesnt fit the standard cosmological model. Such strange physics could resolve the disagreement between the predictions of the age and expansion rate of the universe arising from the measurements of the CMB and the motions of galaxies.

Were continuing to observe half the sky from Chile with our telescope, said Mark Devlin, the telescopes deputy director and the Reese W. Flower Professor of Astronomy and Astrophysics at the University of Pennsylvania. As the precision of both techniques increases, the pressure to resolve the conflict will only grow.

I didnt have a particular preference for any specific value it was going to be interesting one way or another, said Cornell Universitys Steve Choi, first author of the other paper posted to arXiv.org. We find an expansion rate that is right on the estimate by the Planck satellite team. This gives us more confidence in measurements of the universes oldest light.

Nvidia And University Of Florida Supercharge Education With AI Supercomputer – Forbes

Chris Malachowsky, Nvidia co-founder

Nvidia and The University of Florida (UF) are in engaging in a unique public-private partnership that could result in the development of the largest university AI supercomputer in the United States, and perhaps the world. The project is anchored by a $25 million gift from UF alumnus and Nvidia co-founder, Chris Malachowsky along with a matching $25 million grant from Nvidia in the form of hardware, software, training, and services, as well as an additional $20 million from UF for data center upgrades.

The project was inspired by Malachowsky who was looking for a way to help the university expand its reach and bring artificial intelligence (AI) to the forefront at UF. The initiative includes a commitment from UF to hire 100 additional faculty members focused on AI. They will join 500 new faculty recently added across disciplines many of whom will weave AI into their teaching and research. The University expects to integrate the use of this AI supercomputer throughout various departments. In addition, the University is introducing a Bachelor of Science degree in Data Science this fall.

Malachowsky hopes this unique project will become a template for other universities and companies to follow. He is quoted as saying: Artificial intelligence is the most disruptive technology of our era, with sweeping implications for how we live and work. In my conversation with Malachowsky he expressed great enthusiasm for bringing AI to a broad set of disciplines at the UF - from precision agriculture, to astrophysics, and to marine biology. The obvious applications are in engineering disciplines for applications such as autonomous driving research. In addition, Malachowsky also expects there will be courses in other areas such as the ethics of AI and journalism to understanding the impact of AI on society.

Malachowsky believes that the Nvidia AI supercomputer will enhance research into all these areas with both number crunching and machine learning capability. In particular, he believes that solving some of the toughest problems we face today, such as alternative energy and climate change, requires an interdisciplinary approach that includes massive compute power and machine learning for simulation and modeling.

Overall, there would be an general enhancement to STEM (short for Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) education throughout the University. The system that Nvidia will be delivering to UF later this year which will be up and running just a few weeks later is an Nvidia DGX SuperPOD. A similar, though larger, in-house system at Nvidia called Selene is in the No. 7 spot in the latest Top500 supercomputer list with an HPL mark of 27.58 petaflops. The DGX SuperPOD is powered by Nvidas new Ampere A100 GPUs and AMDs EPYC Rome CPUs and uses Mellanox HDR InfiniBand as the system network. Separately, it was announced earlier this year that UF was the first institution of higher learning in the U.S. to receive DGX A100 systems, which have already been deployed in an existing supercomputer.

NVIDIA SuperPOD Data Center

This public-private initiative could be a model for other industry and academic collaborations. Alumni can work with their alma mater, industry, and local governments to make significant hardware and monetary contributions while the universities would provide the academic environment and the researchers to put that hardware to work. Malachowsky believes that this type of program can help to improve the United States international competitiveness if it were to be replicated. UF is already moving ahead with improving access to its technology and will make the AI supercomputer available to other state and regional schools.

Malachowsky believes this really is a moonshot opportunity for the University and for all educators to leverage this unprecedented access to advanced compute capability and AI to advance the country.

Shiawassee County board poised to approve Second Amendment resolution – Argus Press

CORUNNA Shiawassee County moved one step closer to becoming a Second Amendment sanctuary county Wednesday as commissioners voted 6-1 to advance a resolution affirming residents right to bear arms to todays full board meeting, set for 5 p.m. inside the Surbeck Building, 201 N. Shiawassee St.

Commissioner Marlene Webster, R-District 1, voted against the move during the panels Committee of the Whole meeting Wednesday, citing troublesome language in the resolution that supports both the Shiawassee County Sheriff (Brian BeGole) and the Shiawassee County Prosecuting Attorney (Scott Koerner) in the exercise of their sound discretion to enforce any and all constitutional firearm laws.

I strongly support Second Amendment rights and the Constitution, and Im sure there are laws out there that are violating Second Amendment rights, but I think more core to the Constitution than the Second Amendment is the balance of power, Webster said. We have a system for appealing unconstitutional laws, and if theres a law thats unconstitutional, it has to go through the court system to be deemed so. I feel like giving that authority to local law enforcement puts an additional burden on them and frankly violates the Constitution.

The Second Amendment sanctuary movement which seeks to stop new gun laws is led locally by Byron resident Anthony Tolbert, who serves as chairman of the Shiawassee County chapter of Michigan for 2A Sanctuary Counties, a Facebook group.

Tolbert said the formation of the group, as well as the push for Shiawassee County to become a Second Amendment sanctuary, was sparked by actions to limit Second Amendment rights in Virginia.

In April, Democratic Gov. Ralph Northam approved a red flag law that allows law enforcement to temporarily seize firearms from individuals deemed a threat to themselves or others. As the legislation worked its way toward passage, a widespread pro-gun movement ignited throughout the state and subsequently the nation, as various localities made vows not to enforce what some officials in those areas perceived to be unconstitutional gun laws.

Tolbert initially approached the Shiawassee County Board of Commissioners with the resolution to become a sanctuary county in January. To date, he has collected more than 700 signatures from county residents in support of the resolution, he said.

While our liberal and progressive friends in this county assure us that our Second Amendment rights are not going anywhere, we can simply point to their mainstream politics to know this is simply not true if they were to get their wish, Tolbert said during the public comment portion of Wednesdays meeting. Our current governor and attorney general, as well as the (democratic) partys presidential candidates have called for things such as red flag laws, common sense gun laws, bans and outright confiscations. It is our intent to send a message to Lansing and anywhere else that may look to infringe on our God-given, constitutionally protected rights.

Commissioner Dan McMaster, R-District 2, spoke in support of the sanctuary resolution Wednesday, noting hes received several emails and phone calls from residents regarding the proposal since the topic was first discussed earlier this year. Further action on the resolution was delayed for several months due to COVID-19, he added.

I know my truth, McMaster said, and some of my constituents may disagree with this and thats their right, but by far the majority of the constituents in my district and this county support this (resolution). In my almost four years of public service, this will probably be the vote that I will be the most proud of, (the vote) I will remember the most.

Board Chairman Jeremy Root, R-District 5, also expressed support for Shiawassee County becoming a Second Amendment sanctuary, citing the 45 counties in Michigan that have already approved resolutions.

I dont think were out in left field, I dont think were radical, I mean, thats more than half the state, Root said.

I think the freedom to bear arms is one of the most important rights thats granted to us, Root continued. This simply just reaffirms that we trust in our sheriff, we trust in our prosecutor that they make sound discretion and that they enforce constitutional laws and will not enforce anything unconstitutional on any of our residents.

Webster said if the resolution simply stated the board supports the Second Amendment, she could support it.

When it says that we give discretion to the sheriff and the prosecutor to, and its worded differently in this new draft, but the intent, as Chairman Root just stated, is that they could use their discretion to not enforce laws that they believe are (unconstitutional), thats where I feel this document violates the Constitution, Webster said. If a law is unconstitutional, it has to be taken in litigation to the courts and appealed through the courts and determined by the Supreme Court whether or not it is a constitutional law.

Social networks aim to erase hate but miss the target on guns – The Conversation US

As Facebook faces down a costly boycott campaign demanding the social network do more to combat hate speech, CEO Mark Zuckerberg recently announced plans to ban a wider category of hateful content in ads. Twitter, YouTube and Reddit have also taken additional steps to curtail online hate, removing several inflammatory accounts.

But as social networks refine their policies and update algorithms for detecting extremism, they overlook a major source of hateful content: gun talk.

As a researcher of online extremism, I examined the user policies of social networks and found that while each address textbook forms of hate speech, they give a pass to the widespread use of gun rhetoric that celebrates or promotes violence.

In fact, the word gun appears but once in Facebooks policy on Violence and incitement to bar the manipulation of images to include a gun to the head. And neither guns nor firearms are mentioned in Twitters policy on Glorifications of violence, or YouTubes guidelines on Violent or graphic content or within any of these networks rules on hate speech.

Gun references have become prevalent in social media dialogues involving the nationwide protests over racial injustice, police reform and the Black Lives Matter movement.

On Facebook, a group called White Lives Matter shared a post that reads, Dont allow yourself or your property to become a victim of violence. Pick up your weapon and defend yourself. Another user posted the picture of a handgun beneath the message, I never carried a weapon, never needed it, but I have changed my mind and will apply for what I deem necessary to handle things my way Tired of all these BLM idiots looters.

While nearly every social network works to identify and prohibit violent speech, gun groups have managed to evade censure. One such Facebook community gleefully taunts protesters with the prospect of retaliation by firearm. They share a meme of a stack of bullets surrounded by the caption, If you defund the police you should know, I dont own any rubber bullets.

[Expertise in your inbox. Sign up for The Conversations newsletter and get expert takes on todays news, every day.]

Twitter users have also exploited that networks lack of restrictions on gun talk. Hashtags like #GetYourGuns and #2ndAmendment appear in political statements made against the police and protesters alike. A recent video of a police officer punching a suspect behind the wheel is the subject of a tweet that promises in turn, We will take action into our hands. #getyourguns.

Another tweet citing #guns features the viral video of a Florida sheriff warning that the people of his county like guns and will be in their homes tonight with their guns loaded. He continues, And if you try to break into their homes to steal, to set fires, Im highly recommending they blow you back out of their house with their guns. The same video trends across TikTok and Facebook where one gun group concurs, I couldnt agree more!

These examples do not disseminate racial slurs or direct violence, but they do allow users to stoke hostilities in a way that is accepted by social networks. And the mixture of culture wars and gun talk can be a dangerous concoction, as made evident by the Instagram posts of the 19-year-old assailant who later killed 17 people at a Parkland, Florida, high school in 2018. The AR-15 that he used in that shooting was the frequent subject of his social media posts that accompanied rants about illegal immigrants, African Americans, the Jewish community and law enforcement.

The debate over online gun rhetoric is not new to Silicon Valley. In 2018, streaming services like Amazon, Google and Roku were the subject of a high-profile boycott campaign, led by anti-gun advocates. The campaign called upon streaming services to stop hosting the online channel of the National Rifle Association, NRATV, citing its frequent use of hateful rhetoric. One such video opens with scenes of an NRA spokesman in the midst of target practice as he unleashes a diatribe centering on riotous protesters and obstructionist politicians.

My study found that NRATV dedicated the overwhelming majority of its content to denouncing liberal groups, media and movements like the Womens March. Coupled with the gun lobbys core message that Americans should arm themselves, anti-gun groups felt NRATV was producing violence-inciting programming.

But companies like Roku felt the content had not violated their terms of service. The #DumpNRATV campaign ultimately lost steam, but found a form of success when NRATV was later forced to suspend its operation over financial issues. However, its videos still stream on YouTube and Twitter.

President Donald Trumps social media presence also looms heavily over the debate about social network policies regarding violent content. Even as the presidents social media accounts have, at times, featured acts of physical harm done to others, social networks have been reluctant to act. But that may be changing.

During the nationwide protests, President Trump recently tweeted, When the looting starts, the shooting starts. Twitter had evidently seen enough. The network placed a public notice on the tweet, replacing it with the message that it had violated the Twitter Rules about glorifying violence.

Still, gun and shooting references continue to proliferate across the contentious political exchanges on social networks. For companies like Facebook and Twitter, incorporating guns into their policies that prohibit hate and violence is a risky prospect. Restrictions on gun talk could open the door to a maelstrom of criticism from gun lobbies, politicians, and Second Amendment advocates. But short of taking that political risk, social networks will have to design new algorithms to interpret the true meaning of hashtags like #GetYourGuns and #Shoot2Kill.

Radically centrist solutions to America’s two great wedge issues | TheHill – The Hill

Americans inhabit two vastly different social, cultural and geographic worlds. Unsurprisingly, this divide has helped create stunning levels of political polarization.

Two wedge issues, guns and abortion, fuel the extreme division gripping the country.

Drawing solely on the Constitution and the Bible, a radically centrist approach to these topics can bridge Americas vast social and cultural divide.

Guns:

Compared to our international peers, the United States suffers from an epidemic of gun violence. It is not uncommon for more than 100men, women and children to be shotin one American city over one weekend.

This is morally and ethically unacceptable.

The sheer number of guns in America enough for every man, woman and child (with 67 million left over) also has a deadly effect on policing. Cops are forced to assume that every citizen is armed, leading to far too many violent interactions with civilians.

Conservative interpretations of the Second Amendment hold that Americans have an individual right to own a gun. But America's Founding Fathers did not see things through such a narrow lens.

The original intent of the Second Amendment was to eliminate the need for a standing army. After years of abuses by the British military, the Founding Fathersviewed a full-time national army as a threat to freedom. Decentralized militias, they reasoned, could provide for the common defense without being subject to the whims of a tyrannical leader.

Hence the first 13 words of the Second Amendment: A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free State...

In other words, the Founders did not view firearm ownership as an individual right, but rather through citizens participation in a state-based army.

Lets apply that reasoning to the present.

Decentralized state militias still exist today. National Guard units complete with colonial militia-themed logos report directly to governors, who can refuse deployment requests from the president.

A centrist and thoroughly constitutional approach would require gun owners to have some connection whether through firearms training, drill, community service or otherwise with their local National Guard unit.

In addition to promoting civic and community engagement, making gun ownership contingent upon affiliation with a Guard unit would weed out many of the criminals responsible for the 40 senseless murders that occur every day in America.

The same goes for mass shooters. Most hold extremist beliefs or suffer from severe mental illness. Such individuals are unlikely tovoluntarilyassociatewith a local Guard detachment, nor would they pass basic screening procedures.

Mandatory Guard affiliation for gun ownership could also stanch the epidemic of suicides by firearm well above 20,000 each year in the United States.

Moreover, some of the most ardent defenders of the Second Amendment enjoy playing military dress-up. If they are so attached to their firearms, why not take this soldierly infatuation a small step further? After all, that would put them squarely in line with the intent of the Founding Fathers that they revere.

Ultimately, an ugly gun-related irony is emerging. The sheer volume of high-powered firearms on the streets fuels the militarization of Americas police forces, posing an obvious threat to freedom and democracy.

But if cops can reasonably assume that American gun owners are trained and vetted by their local National Guard unit, police departments are far more likely to demilitarize and adopt less aggressive tactics.

Abortion:

Americans of all political stripes must acknowledge the complex moral and ethical nuances associated with abortion. But if we are to bridge the social and cultural rifts plaguing America, we must apply an objective, clear-eyed approach to this uniquely divisive topic.

Abortion was weaponized for political gain in the late 1970s. Before then, many evangelicals among todays most passionate opponents of abortion were pro-choice or ambivalent about the issue. As religious and ideological shifts go, this reversal is remarkable.

Evangelicals draw their beliefs partly from the Bible. But while the Bible enumerates a litany of laws and punishments in punctilious detail, the Old and New testaments are stunningly silent on abortion (a relatively common practice in the ancient world).

In fact, a close reading of the Bible finds that there is no biblical justification for opposition to abortion.

Lets unpack that.

The Bible states that Thou shall not murder. It also prescribes the death penalty for homicide. But, according to a Mosaic law found in the same book as the Ten Commandments causing a miscarriage is not a capital crime. Instead, a monetary fine must be paid. The clear implication, therefore, is that abortion is not tantamount to murder.

This is squarely in alignment with Jewish interpretations of the Old Testament. Since the Israelites (quite literally) wrote the book, Jewish law which holds that a fetus is not a person cannot be discounted.

American evangelicals made these same biblically-supported arguments only a few decades ago. In 1968, the movements Billy Graham-founded journal stated that God does not regard the fetus as a soul.

Moreover, according to the Bible, God causes the abortion of a fetus conceived through adultery. This, clearly, is in stark conflict with contemporary pro-life dogma.

Perhaps most importantly, the Bible provides a consistent message on the all-important question of when life begins.

The Book of Genesis states that man became a living being only after God breathed into his nostrils the breath of life. The Book of Job relates that the Spirit of God has made me; the breath of the Almighty gives me life. Revelation details how the dead arise after inhaling the breath of life from God. Similarly, God told Ezekiel, I will put breath in you, and you will come to life.

A strictly biblical view, therefore, is that life begins at a babys first breath.

As such, a politically centrist approach based entirely on the Bible would not permit most abortions past a certain stage of development of the fetuss lungs (or, perhaps, another organ).

Ultimately, a close, objective reading of the Bible and the Constitution uncovers reasonable, middle-of-the-road solutions to two of the most politically and culturally divisive issues in America.

It is long past time for the moderate majority to tune out the ideological extremists and engage their fellow citizens in the spirit of good faith and compromise.

The 5 best money management tips I wish I could have told myself when I was 25 – Business Insider – Business Insider

As wealth planners, my team and I provide guidance to our clients about how to create financial plans and strategies to help build and sustain wealth throughout their lifetimes. Over the last 30 years, I've been fortunate enough to listen to their challenges and help build solutions for them.

When I think over what I've learned throughout my career, there are choices along the way that I wish I had been more aware of when I was younger. Here are the top five things I would tell my 25-year-old self:

The earlier you start investing, the easier it is to build wealth.

When you invest early, you are able to benefit from growth over a longer period of time. Younger investors have the gift of having decades ahead of them, making now an opportune time to take risks. Young people have a greater capacity to weather market volatility, unlike older investors. Generally, they have the time to rebuild from any market losses they may experience.

An easy way to start investing is to contribute to your employer's 401(k) plan and take advantage of their matching offers when available. If you contribute the amount needed to obtain the full match, you are already earning a 100% return on your investment.

Your contributions come out of your paycheck pre-taxed, so you don't even know it's missing. Plus they grow tax-deferred until you take out the money for retirement.

If you don't have a 401(k) plan, consider contributing to a tax-deferred plan, such as a traditional or Roth IRA.

When you're young, you're not thinking about retirement. There are so many other major expenses coming your way, making it easy to focus on short-term goals, such as saving for a vacation or buying a new car. But you also need to focus on longer-term goals.

Breaking your longer-term goals into multiple shorter-term goals can help prevent you from becoming overwhelmed. Since long-term goals, like buying a house or achieving financial independence, may take many years to achieve, saving today will get you closer to making those goals a reality.

No one likes budgeting and it can be a struggle even among my wealthiest clients but it's the foundation for acquiring wealth.

Creating a budget forces you to look at your cash flow to determine how much money you need to "keep the lights on" versus how much you earn. A budget keeps spending in check and makes sure your saving is on track to meet your future goals. When you get into the habit of automatically allocating a portion of your budget to put into an emergency fund, you are protecting yourself from financial turmoil should unexpected events occur. The current coronavirus pandemic clearly highlights the importance of having an emergency savings account.

Buying life insurance when you're younger can save you thousands of dollars in the long run. As you get older, the cost of life insurance gets more expensive because the premiums are correlated to age and health. If you wait until you have a partner and children, premiums will be much more expensive.

There are two types of insurance term and permanent. Term lasts for a period of time and then ends; whereas, permanent is designed not expire if premiums are paid.

If you like the idea of permanent insurance but can't afford it right now, you may want to consider buying a level-term insurance product with a conversion option. With term insurance, you're essentially renting life insurance each year. The conversion option allows you to convert to a permanent policy later when you can afford it without being required to go through the medical underwriting process. I think everyone eventually regrets not having bought more insurance when they were younger - I know I do!

House proposes billions of dollars for technology throughout government – Roll Call

Appropriators said the bills $23 billion allocation for NASA is aimed primarily at furthering investments into human space exploration, which also means investing in future astronauts. The bill sets aside $126 million of NASAs total for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics educationfunds the White House had proposed cutting.

The National Science Foundation would receive nearly $9 billion in funding, up $270 million from the enacted level in fiscal 2020.

These funds will foster innovation and U.S. economic competitiveness, the committee said, including funding for research on artificial intelligence, quantum information science, advanced manufacturing, physics, mathematics, cybersecurity, neuroscience, and STEM education.

Appropriators are seeking to use the nearly $25 billion legislation funding the Federal Trade Commission and the Federal Communications Commission to assist in antitrust investigations of Silicon Valley and to understand where rural Americans lack internet access.

The bill boosts the FTCs budget by $10 million, for a total of $341 million, to aidits antitrust enforcement work amid ongoing investigations by federal and state regulators into major technology firms such as Facebook, Google, Amazon and Apple. A committee press release singles out antitrust enforcement and consumer protection work as justification for the increase.

3 Themes Emerging in Speech Technology – No Jitter

We would all rather be convening in-person for Enterprise Connect, but like other industry events, the 2020 edition will be virtual, running from Aug. 3-6. Im returning with another state of the market update on speech technology in the enterprise, and as a preview, Ive got a few highlights to share.

My presentation was initially developed for the in-person event back in March, and while COVID-19 took that option away, it also had an impact on the collaboration space, as weve all had to adapt to working from home. Zoom is the most visible beneficiary of this change, but in general, business has been good for collaboration vendors, and with that, were seeing more speech technology use cases.

Theme 1: Innovation Versus Disruption

Ive been using the term New Voice for a few years now to describe speech-based applications that have moved beyond telephony. Aside from talking in-person, telephony has long been the dominant channel for voice in the workplace. That pillar remains firmly in place, but its utility has been declining for years, and in the world of digital work, other voice applications have gained traction. Most of these are for person-to-person communication, but with advances in AI-driven speech technology, new layers are being added where voice has entirely new and different use cases.

To understand whats driving these changes, its important to distinguish between innovation and disruption. Its easy to use these terms interchangeably much like communication and collaboration but I see them being on a spectrum. In some cases, innovation leads to disruption, and in others, disruption leads to innovation, and I see both happening with speech tech, especially in the current pandemic climate.

During my talk, Ill be exploring this further, and providing examples of both. For decision-makers, my message is to understand how these forces are different and the causal relationship between them. Both forces are driving speech tech in the enterprise, and Ill talk about an added layer that provides a common set of implications to watch for.

Whether the force is innovation or disruption, both share an over-arching driver that I find holds for most technologies, speech tech included. That driver would be how both of these forces generally manifest themselves in the consumer world first, and from there, enterprise adoption follows. This has major implications for who will emerge as leaders in this space, and theres a strong case to make that it wont be familiar names we know from UCaaS.

Theme 2: Enterprise Use Cases

I cant say which 2020 applications may meet with similar success, but as the summary table below shows, my focus has moved on from real-time transcription to other use cases. All of these are quite promising, and together they reflect how rich the possibilities have become, largely thanks to advances in AI.

Some of these companies will be familiar from my 2019 talk, and I wanted to revisit Otter in particular. Last year, I felt they had the coolest transcription offering, and if you get my newsletter, youll know that I use Otter for my podcasts. Ill be talking about them mainly to show how far theyve taken things from basic real-time transcription to a deeper value proposition around what they call dark data.

Ill be talking about each use case below in detail, emphasizing how the company mentioned is just one leading example in most cases. For most of these applications, there are several companies both start-ups and majors doing good work, and I could have just as easily cited any of them. I view this as further validation for how quickly the speech tech space is evolving.

Theme 3 Setting Objectives for Decision-Makers

This topic warrants a workshop of its own, but the main message here is that no matter how compelling these applications may be, IT needs to build a business case. As with anything driven by the shiny ball of AI, its easy to see these speech tech use cases as silver bullets for a litany of problems. Even with this small set of use cases cited above, the benefits need to be clearly articulated and tied to a specific set of objectives.

In my talk, Ill distinguish between business-level objectives automation and cost reduction and those that are employee-based namely productivity and engagement. All of these are valid, but speech tech applications will impact them in distinct ways. These distinctions matter because the benefits that come with each use case can give rise to unintended consequences.

To mitigate this, it will be important for decision-makers to assess both the benefits and risks. Ill be addressing key considerations here, including privacy implications and the always-there AI dark side. Last year, I provided several examples that are still relevant today as is most of that talk but even then, I was only scratching the surface for where AI can do more harm than good.

Were certainly seeing it all around us now, as cybercrime gets bolder and broader, enterprises and contact centers being rich targets for these actors the risks are very real. I hope that stokes your curiosity rather than scare you away, and that you'll join me to learn about the state of speech tech in the enterprise.

Transportation takes a leading edge with smart technology – TechHQ

The world is becoming increasingly urban. By 2050, 7.5 billion people will be city dwellers1. This means that cities around the world are experiencing unprecedented population growth: Tokyo is now home to over 372 million people, and Mumbais population is to rise to 42 million by 20503.

This is driving the need for smart solutions to meet urban challenges. This year, 2020, there will be $124bn invested in smart cities globally4. Many of the challenges being met by urban administrators are inextricably linked with those facing the transportation industry. Boston Consulting Group says that by the end of 2020, we will see a three-fold increase in global IoT transport and logistics spend to $30bn5.

The driving force behind the growth of smart solutions is to create environments that improve citizen experience, lower the cost of delivering services, and embrace sustainability. With the increasing digitization of transportation, emerging technologies are proving to be critical in advancing smart solutions: Edge computing, Computer Vision and 5G are among those delivering immediate impact:

In order to harness the full potential of new smart technologies and the ever-increasing amounts of data transportation industries must embrace edge computing.

Today, 90% of all data is created and processed inside traditional centralized data centers or clouds. That is beginning to change. According to Gartner6, by 2025, 75% of data is going to be processed at the Edge.

All keys areas of transport are now leveraging the power of data and unlocking the potential of smart technologies through Edge computing. Combining Edge and IoT means the transportation industry is able to drive efficiency, reduce costs, improve safety, enhance security, and make faster decisions.

Lets look at some of the main forms of transportation to see how this is being done.

Urban mass transit systems have exploded in number and scope in recent decades as the worlds population has urbanized. Globally, there were 53bn mass transit passengers in 2017 an increase of 17% over a five-year period7 and numbers are still rising. For example, London rail trips are expected to increase by 80% by 20508.

Bus, tram, and metro train operators around the world are now investing in Edge technology, so they can make smart decisions in real-time. Connected public transportation systems are able to decrease passenger waiting time by 30%9. Public bus operators are able to improve service levels and passenger experience through fleet tracking, smart fare collection, and live video monitoring.

The number of cars on the road is set to reach the 2 billion mark by 204010, so countries around the world are investing in smart technologies to manage the increased traffic flows. This includes AI-enabled traffic and weather detection, sensor-empowered interactive road lights, and smart pavements that can monitor changing road conditions.

Smart technologies can help shave 30 minutes off the average daily commute9. Other benefits include: 10-15% improvement in emergency service arrival time, and smart refuse collection, which is expected to grow by 23% between 2017-20229.

As airports and aircraft become digitally connected through Edge IoT technology, many potential opportunities to improve air travel become an everyday reality. By harnessing Edge technology, 5G, and computer vision, many airlines are now able to drive significant operational efficiency. There are many use cases here, including: visual inspection-based pre-emptive maintenance that reduces downtime and delays, smarter scheduling and runway utilization, and cost-savings through smarter fuel usage.

Safety and security can be significantly enhanced through Edge computing. Combining computer vision, computer audition, and analytics at the Edge can facilitate less disruptive and more rigorous safety and security. For example, facial recognition can be employed at smart gates to help tackle crime, and smart technology can be used to improve health screenings at airports.

And there is huge potential for improving customer experience. By using Edge computing and smart technologies, the whole passenger journey can be connected and made smoother; from parking and arrival at the airport, through check-in, boarding, and inflight entertainment to arrival and baggage claim.

Rail is among the most energy-efficient modes of transport. While the rail sector carries 8% of the worlds passengers, it represents only 2% of total transport energy demand11. And with smart technology, greater efficiencies can be achieved as passenger volumes increase.

One of the biggest efficiencies that can be realized by operators is through rail automation. This is rapidly advancing 23% of cities with a metro network now have at least one fully automated line12.

Security is a primary concern for all rail companies, and a growing number of operators are now embracing Edge computing-enabled smart technology to improve preventative measures. In London, Transport for London (TfL) operates over 12,000 cameras on platforms and trains to help tackle crime13. Real-time monitoring can also help prevent train and track failures, provide accurate real-time data and analytics, and facilitate pre-emptive maintenance.

As the pace of digitalization of the shipping industry increases, it is adopting technologies such as Edge computing and AI to drive efficiencies and safety. Governments across the world are supporting the deployment of innovative technologies and have launched initiatives to promote cross-border collaboration.

Shipping companies are seeing significant efficiencies from the use of remote diagnostics, pre-emptive maintenance and from maximizing uptime. Shipping security is being taken to a new level with the introduction of Edge-to-Cloud technology, data and network protection, and advanced threat analytics. And safety is being improved with the introduction of human augmentation and semi-autonomous vessels.

Dell Technologies is a global leader in Edge IoT technology and is playing a central role in driving digital transformation in all key areas of transportation. It is working with transportation organizations across the globe to leverage the potential of Edge computing by focusing the power of technology close to the data source. To learn more, please visit: DellTechnologies.com/Edge

Processing data at the Edge creates true business opportunity. Analytics, streaming video, cloud services, and next-generation applications such as computer vision are driving the need to bring computing power and storage closer to end-users.

For transportation organizations, Edge computing is the next big shift in the architecture of distributed computing networks, representing a massive wave of opportunities in efficiency, safety, security, performance, and customer experience.

"We are really enthusiastic about the application of our tough adhesive technology in dental surgery, as it has the potential to dramatically transform current clinical practice," said Freedman.

Robby Lane, Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Amend Surgical, expressed similar enthusiasm. "Both our engineering and clinical teams were involved in the evaluation of this important technology, and we are eager to begin commercialization. We envision that the tough adhesive could provide clinicians both a wound barrier and an effective means to protect bone grafts in a single, easy-to-apply product, and could potentially eliminate the need for sutures used in conjunction with most dental barriers," Lane said.

The company intends to ultimately manufacture the tough adhesive at its facility in Alachua, Florida, where it already employs a complementary manufacturing process.

Lane first learned about the tough gel adhesive during a meeting with Erika Bechtold, Ph.D., Director of Technology Commercialization at Harvard OTD, when they met at an industry conference in 2019. It was evident the technology would complement Amend Surgical's biomaterials portfolio, and discussions and site visits soon followed, culminating in the license agreement spearheaded by OTD.

"We knew that the tough gel adhesive had enormous potential in a variety of internal and external wound closure applications, and the license with Amend Surgical in the oral surgery space is a great first application to leverage all of the unique advantages and features of this technology, beyond even its ability to bind to wet surfaces. It shows great promise for development into a range of possible products that would benefit both patients and their physicians," said Bechtold.

First described in Sciencein 2017, the tough gel adhesive maintains its binding strength for multiple weeks after application, even over tens of thousands of cycles of repeated motion. It can also be engineered to include therapeutics such as antimicrobial molecules and/or contract in response to body heat, thus helping to prevent infection and close wounds faster. It is fully biocompatible and non-toxic, and much easier to apply to a wound than traditional closure methods.

"It has been gratifying to watch this technology transform from a project in the lab into an innovation with real potential to help patients recover from surgery more comfortably. I'm proud of the work the team has done to successfully get it to this point, and look forward to further collaboration opportunities with Amend Surgical to see it make an impact in the clinic," said Mooney, who is also the Robert P. Pinkas Family Professor of Bioengineering at Harvard's John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS).

"This agreement exemplifies how the Wyss Institute's model of technology translation accelerates the pace of innovation and commercialization, bringing novel solutions to real-world problems with the help of industrial partners who are also willing to commit to an idea that has the potential for enormous impact," said the Wyss Institute's Founding DirectorDonald Ingber, M.D., Ph.D., who is also theJudah Folkman Professor of Vascular Biologyat Harvard Medical School and Boston Children's Hospital, and Professor of Bioengineering at SEAS.

Technology access and mental health among top concerns outlined in Tennessee Educator Survey – WBIR.com

The annual survey added COVID-19 specific questions for educators to answer amid the pandemic.

TENNESSEE, USA The Tennessee Department of Education released the results of the 2020 Educator Survey on Tuesday after an unusual end to the school year.

The pandemic forced an adjustment to the usual questions. The responses from teachers and administrators show the concern among educators for their students.

Over half of school teachers and leaders responded to the regular questions on the survey, due May 1.

Forty percent of teachers and 44 percent of school leaders across the state responded to the COVID-19 portion of the survey. Their main concerns centered around student mental health and access to technology.

More than half of responding teachers listed they're worried about barriers to accessing remote learning or students missing crucial services like meals and counseling as one of their top three concerns.

In the open-ended questions, responses and frequently used words differed slightly based on the area the school district is in.

For example, schools serving more low-income households were more likely to mention food-related words, like food insecurity and hungry. Districts serving fewer low-income families were more likely to mention words related to health, both emotional and physical.

Overall, "internet" and "access" were two of the most relevant words throughout the comments.

Two-thirds of educators in more rural communities reported that better internet access is needed to support remote learning. That's compared to about half of educators in urban and suburban communities.

Teachers and principals expressed their concerns about how this digital divide may widen existing educational disparities.

In the end, educators said they care about the well-being of their students and want to see success across the board.

In addition to COVID-19 related responses, the TDOE report:
