Herkimer County officials want to help Remington if they can – The Times Telegram

The approximately 300 full-time workers furloughed from their jobs at the Remington Arms plant in Ilion are expected to return to work within a month after certain suppliers, shut down due to the COVID-19 pandemic, can provide raw materials again.

Still, news of the furloughs along with a Wall Street Journal report that the company is preparing to file for bankruptcy for the second time in two years and could be sold to the Navajo Nation has local officials concerned for Remington, Herkimer Countys largest employer. Theyre willing to help if they can.

With the North Carolina-based company in bankruptcy proceedings, however, there isnt a lot that can be done right now, said Herkimer County Industrial Development Agency (IDA) Executive Director John Piseck.

"They havent had any discussions with us," he said. He pointed out that the company partial ownership through a hedge fund also makes it more difficult to get involved.

Local officials "maybe" could work out a payment in lieu of taxes (PILOT) agreement "if the owners reached out," Piseck said. The IDA offers such tax breaks to assist businesses particularly those that are just starting up or seek to expand.

"Id hate to see (Remington) close," Piseck said, adding he would not want to see the area lose manufacturing jobs. "Weve got a governor whos against firearms even though there are several major gun manufacturers in New York state."

A request for comment to Remington was not immediately returned before press time.

Village limited

Ilion Mayor Brian Lamica said he found out about the furloughs at Remington the same way as everybody else: Through media reports.

And while the IDA could potentially help, Lamica said the Village of Ilion "is not financially able to do anything," but added he would be willing to reach out to the areas state and federal representatives on the companys behalf.

Remington has received such assistance in the past.

This includes a 2008 financial package that included a $1.5 million state grant and $1.5 million from the Empire State Development Corporation to bring jobs to Ilion and help fund upgrades. In 2011, the New York Power Authority approved the allocation of 3,250 kilowatts to Ilion to provide low-cost municipal power to Remington a move then-Mayor John Stephens said would result in a substantial savings for the company.

"If needed, we could offer them a place to have meetings or for people to sign up for benefits," Lamica said.

Lamica said Remingtons struggles are felt at the local level.

"Every time theres a furlough, that takes away 300, 400 or 500 people who would be buying lunch or getting gas while theyre in the village," he said. "That hurts our local economy."

With news headlines about various shootings, Lamica said, he has heard that banks are not quick to lend to firearms manufacturers.

"In a way, thats attacking our Second Amendment rights," he said. "Nobody forces anybody to buy a gun. People who use them in an improper fashion are not the type of people we want to have guns. What we need to do is enforce the laws that are on the books, not create new laws."

Petitions of the week: Political donations, gun rights, the emoluments clause and more – SCOTUSblog

Posted Thu, July 23rd, 2020 1:45 pm by Andrew Hamm

This week we highlight cert petitions pending before the Supreme Court that ask the court to weigh in on a variety of hot-button constitutional and political issues. One petition, in Lieu v. Federal Election Commission, asks the court to decide whether federal limits on political donations can, under the First Amendment, be applied to donations to so-called super PACs. Another petition, in Zoie H. v. Nebraska, asks the court to review, under the Second and Sixth Amendments, a state law that allows juvenile courts, without a jury trial, to bar certain individuals from possessing firearms until age 25. And a third petition, in Blumenthal v. Trump, asks the court to wade into a lawsuit by 29 Democratic senators alleging that President Donald Trump is violating the Constitutions emoluments clause.

These and otherpetitions of the weekare below the jump:

Lieu v. Federal Election Commission19-1398Issue: Whether the federal statutory limit on contributions to political committees,52 U.S.C. 30116(a)(1)(C), comports with the First Amendment as applied to committees that make only independent expenditures.

Hughes v. Northwestern University19-1401Issue: Whether allegations that a defined-contribution retirement plan paid or charged its participants fees that substantially exceeded fees for alternative available investment products or services are sufficient to state a claim against plan fiduciaries for breach of the duty of prudence under the Employee Retirement Income Security Act of 1974,29 U.S.C. 1104(a)(1)(B).

Zacarias v. Janvey19-1402Issue: Whether a district court in a receivership action has Article III jurisdiction to bar investor claims for individual injuries when the receiver lacks standing to bring those claims himself due to the lack of an injury to the receivership estate.

Rupert v. Janvey19-1411Issue: Whether the standing requirement of Article III limits receivers to bringing claims that are coextensive with the receivership estate and thus whether Article III precludes receivers from bringing, settling and barring claims of third parties against non-receivership entities.

United States v. Cooley19-1414Issue: Whether the lower courts erred in suppressing evidence on the theory that a police officer of an Indian tribe lacked authority to temporarily detain and search the respondent, Joshua James Cooley, a non-Indian, on a public right-of-way within a reservation based on a potential violation of state or federal law.

Zoie H. v. Nebraska19-1418Issue: Whether the Second and Sixth Amendments permit a state to deprive an individual of the Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms based on the commission of an offense while denying the accused a right to a jury trial for that offense.

Blumenthal v. Trump20-5Issue: Whether legislators have standing to seek judicial relief when their votes have been completely nullified underRaines v. Byrd.

Meet the Candidates: Monroe Boat Club hosts Monroe Township candidate forum ahead of August primary – Bedford Now

Since the onset of the coronavirus pandemic, opportunities to speak to constituents about local government face-to-face have become scarce.

Since the onset of the coronavirus pandemic, opportunities to speak to constituents about local government face-to-face have become scarce.

Thats why several candidates for Monroe Township and some county offices jumped at the opportunity to introduce themselves, speak with voters and discuss local issues ahead of the Aug. 4 primary election.

Monroe Boat Club, 7932 Bolles Harbor Dr., hosted a Meet the Candidates event Thursday night, which welcomed local candidates, along with some seeking county offices, for remarks and a question-and-answer period. The event was held outdoors, adhering to recommended social distancing requirements.

Candidates provided brief backgrounds, explained why theyre running for office and provided a few key issues which prompted their decision to run for office.

I thought it was an opportunity to see what other options are out there for me to serve the community, said Jerry Oley, a Democrat and vice-chairman of the Monroe County Board of Commissioners whos running for Monroe County Clerk/Register of Deeds.

I think I have a lot more to offer Monroe County.

His challenger, Sandra Blank, also a Democrat and retired administrative assistant for the Michigan Department of Corrections, hinted at minimal changes she aims to make in the post after becoming familiar with the office and its staff.

My idea, if I win, is to work (in the clerks office) for a little while and get a feel for the opinions of those who work there, Blank said. I will have to give it a try before implementing any changes.

Locally, citizens seemed most concerned about the township making quick improvement to the LaPlaisance Rd. bridge construction, which is expected to include bridge reconstruction and a reconstruction of the I-75 interchange.

Residents also asked candidates about their positions on second amendment rights, and even asked about the recent debate over the Gen. George Armstrong Custer statue, although thats in the City of Monroes jurisdiction.

The following is a roundup of remarks from candidates for Monroe Township offices who spoke during the candidate forum, in alphabetical order, along with their political affiliation and offices sought:

Al Barron, Democrat, supervisor (incumbent)

Updating the public on the LaPlaisance Rd. bridge reconstruction project, discussing the future of medical marijuana facilities in the township and continuing to support the areas public safety forces were at the forefront of Barrons reelection message.

Weve come a long way here, he said. I think the biggest thing (improved) during my term has been the fire department It still should be a main priority.

Barron has served as township supervisor since 1992, seven terms. From 1988-92, he served as trustee.

Wayne Blank, Republican, supervisor

Improving township communication and interaction with citizens are Blanks top priorities in his bid for the supervisors post. For the first time publicly, he announced that hes running for half-pay, stating that hes not in the race for the money.

Ive got a little bit of experience leading, and I think I would bring that to Monroe Township, he said. I would like to see people get involved with the township, the community I plan on making Monroe Township a center for citizens.

Blank has served as a township trustee since 2016. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1967-71.

Terrance Guido Gerin, Republican, trustee

Better known by ring-name Rhyno, Gerin is a professional wrestler. Moving to the area just two years ago, he said he recently became involved in local politics.

I started going to meetings and thats how I really started getting involved, he said. Some politicians get really caught up in things and dont listen to citizen concerns One of the things Id like to do as trustee is talk with the citizens.

Gerin is the owner of Big Daddys Boat Yard, 13931 Bridge Dr. in Raisinville Township., a marina and boat storage facility. This is his first local political office sought, although he was a 2016 candidate to represent District 15 in the Michigan House.

Richard Janssens, Republican, trustee

If elected, Janssens says he wont miss a beat as trustee, a position he formerly held. Hes known for advocating for fiscal responsibility and wants to ensure essential township services are maintained throughout the coronavirus pandemic.

Hopefully I can pick up where I last left off as trustee, he said.

Janssens retired from DTE Energy and was a farmer. He served in the U.S. Army.

John Manor, Republican, trustee (incumbent)

Monroe is a gateway community, Manor said, but sometimes is treated like a doorstep. Growing businesses in the township, along with supporting nonprofits as the community recovers from COVID-19, are at the heart of his bid for reelection.

What I thoroughly love about local politics is knowing exactly who youre helping, he said. I think, locally, weve had a lot of opportunity to know the people we are helping.

Manor is a current township trustee. He previously worked for the Michigan Legislature.

Kevin Raymo, Republican, trustee

In brief remarks, Raymo said he supports sound fiscal spending in the township. He expressed gratitude for the opportunity to speak to the public in person, a format thats been scarce amid COVID-19.

We need to keep people safe, but not create a panic, he said in a response to a questionnaire from The Monroe News. We need to keep the economy moving forward. Make both parties, Democrats and Republicans, work together for what is best for the citizens we represent.

Raymo is a retired 911 dispatcher for Monroe County Central Dispatch.

The following township candidates who are up for reelection did not attend the forum: Clerk Christina Smith, Republican; Treasurer Penny D. Barton, Democrat; Trustee William Heck Jr., Democrat.

Guy Howe, a Republican, also is a candidate for trustee who did not attend.

Katybeth Davis, a Democrat, is running as a write-in district delegate during the August primary and trustee in the November general election. She also was not present.

Annamarie Osmet, a Republican, is running for Monroe County Clerk/Register of Deeds, along with Oley and Blank, but did not attend.

Hobble Creek Wranglers target love of firearms and Old West – Deseret News

By Isaac HaleDaily Herald

SPRINGVILLE Its a hot, summer afternoon, and a posse of cowboys and cowgirls with aliases such as Lonesome Hart, Tamarack, Anita Gunn and Colt Colton are gathering at the mouth of Hobble Creek Canyon in Springville. Dressed in Old West attire, with single-action six-shooters, rifles and shotguns in hand, theyve come to see who has the keenest eye and fastest trigger finger of the bunch on this side of the Wasatch.

No, this isnt a rerun of some old Western movie, this is a modern-day club shoot for the Hobble Creek Wranglers, Utah Countys only Cowboy Action Shooting Club.

Of all of the shooting sports Ive done, this is by far the most fun, said Springville resident Bob Marshall, who is the groups president.

Cowboy Action Shooting is a sport that incorporates firearms and costumes from the Old West (typically the period from 1860-1900) and aims to bring people together through a mutual love of firearms and preserving the history of the Old West. Cowboy Action Shooting is governed by the Single Action Shooting Society, an international organization founded in 1987.

I think its the hardest shooting sport and the most fun because you dont just master one gun, you have to use four of them in every stage, explained Marshall. Its the best people that Ive ever shot around.

In Cowboy Action Shooting, each shooting sequence is called a scenario, where participants use two pistols, a rifle and a shotgun to hit a series of metal targets in a certain order as fast as possible.

The trick to doing this, at least for me, is counting, explained Michael Snelson, a Springville resident and also the secretary and treasurer of the group. Some people look at the shapes of the targets and they do it by shape, some people count by how many shots have to go on each target. One of the most used scenarios is called a Nevada sweep. There will be four targets set up, well start on target one, sweep the four targets, and then come back and sweep them again.

Each scenario begins with a spotter hitting a timer, and as soon as the scenario begins, shooters pull out their first pistol from their holster and shoot five rounds into the targets, then they pull out their next pistol and shoot five more rounds. Upon shooting all the pistol rounds, the shooter then moves a few feet to the next selection of targets where a rifle is sitting on a table. The shooter fires on the targets until the rifle is empty, then heads to a central table where a shotgun is waiting. The shooter shoots two rounds, loads two more, and then time is called.

For a fast shooter, the whole sequence is usually completed in about a dozen seconds.

Its challenging; it is not easy to go out and do this, said Karen Doty, 79, a resident of Hemet, California, who stopped by the Hobble Creek Wranglers June shoot with her husband, Ron Doty, 82, while in the county visiting family and attending a baby blessing. The two are graduates of Brigham Young University, and go by the aliases Spokane and Colt Colton, respectively.

For Cowboy Action Shooting, its not only about shooting like a cowboy, but also dressing and playing the part, too.

In addition to only using guns designed before 1900, all members of the Single Action Shooting Society are required to make an effort to dress like a character from the Old West period. Their choice of who to role play is up to them. Along with the costumes, every shooter also has a unique alias.

For many, their alias says something about themselves, or their familys history. For others, its an homage to their favorite Old West gunslinger, or even just some silly wordplay or a name that simply sounded cool.

For Karen Spokane Doty, her alias pays tribute to her hometown of Spokane, Washington. I dress like an old schoolmarm from prior to 1900, said Karen with a smile, gesturing to her long, black dress, black vest with a long-sleeved white button-up underneath and a black, flat-brimmed hat atop her head all of which are made from heavy, durable materials.

You kind of come here in a make-believe state, and it kind of stays through the day while youre shooting, said president Bob Marshall, who goes by the alias Hobble Creek Marshal because of his last name, and the fact that he lives in the mouth of Hobble Creek Canyon.

Though the cowboy and cowgirl costumes are a bit of role playing, the camaraderie between shooters is quite real. Several shooters explained that its the people that keep them coming back the second Saturday of each month from March through November for the clubs shoots. Be it some good-natured horseplay or a rivalry, the people of Cowboy Action Shooting keep each shoot fresh and fun.

The second time I shot in the state championship shoot, I won it, said Marshall. The next year, there was a guy that was kind of my nemesis at the time. The day before the shoot I was having problems with my rifle, and he came over and said, Ive got this extra rifle and Id rather you shoot this because if I beat you I want it to be because I outshot you, not because you had problems with a rifle. I didnt shoot good anyway, but thats not the point, he said with a laugh. Thats the kind of people the sports made up with.

Winter Range is the name of the Single Action Shooting Societys national championship, and End of Trail is the name of the groups international championship. Winners dont win any cash prizes, but receive cowboy gear along with trophy-like belt buckles, and of course, bragging rights. Utahs Single Action Shooting Societys state title is also an annual contest, which cycles to different shooting ranges in the state. According to Michael Snelsons last count, there are 16 clubs in Utah, all holding their club shoots on varying days of the month. If we wanted to, we could shoot every week, said Snelson.

Like any shooting sport, gun safety is as integral a part of Cowboy Action Shooting as any of its theatrics.

There are a lot of rules with Cowboy Action Shooting to make sure we stay safe and people dont get shot, said Snelson. There has hardly ever been anyone since the 1980s injured in Cowboy Action Shooting. Everybody understands the safety rules, and theyre watching out for infractions.

For example, guns point into earthen berms when loading and unloading, rifles and shotguns are carried uncocked, vertically with the barrel up, when on range, guns cannot be pointed any wider than 170 degrees from downrange, and only five rounds are loaded into six-shooting pistols so if the gun did fire accidentally, theres an empty chamber up first. Along with missing targets, safety infractions also add time to lower a shooters score. If the safety infraction is egregious enough like dropping a loaded gun the shooter is disqualified from the shoot for the day.

Ive been a shooting cowboy with this club for 14 years, and Ive traveled around to other places, but Ive never seen anybody hurt, Snelson said.

Though Snelson admitted that many of the clubs shooters are older men primarily because of the high cost of buying four firearms, ammo and an outfit to be a regular with the club Cowboy Action Shooting values diversity in its shooters and their skills.

The beauty of this game is that theres something for everyone, said Kirk Ekins, who goes by the alias Rusty Razor, due to his aversion to shaving his long, thick beard. Ekins, and his wife, Lisa, are both Utah state champs in Cowboy Action Shooting. Im pretty competitive and I do fairly well, he said. Theres one shooter where hell shoot a stage in 80 seconds and Ill shoot it in 20 seconds, and he tells me he had four times more fun. Its whatever you want to be. There are people who just love the costumes. Weve got wives that show up for banquet that never shoot a gun, but they love to dress up in Victorian gowns, and then theres the collector that likes his old Colts and original guns. You can be competitive, you can just cheer for the crowd, whatever; theres something for everyone in this game.

However, one common thread among shooters is an appreciation for the Second Amendment. We love our country, and this is one thing that we do to show that support, Snelson said.

We really wish that people who would like to see the Second Amendment not be what it is today, we would like to get them out to the range and let them try this so they can get a feel for it, explained Snelson. For people that havent done it or dont like the Second Amendment, wed like to have them shoot with us and see what its all about. Weve had people come up who think they were afraid of guns because of what theyve seen, and we actually get a gun in their hand and they shoot, and they have a great time doing it.

Jennifer Brown, the out-of-town power behind the Staunton council: Letter – The News Leader

DANIEL McCAULEY, Staunton Published 11:54 a.m. ET July 24, 2020

The power behind the Stauntons city council is in Rockingham County.

The power is a woman who sees her job as putting conservatives in charge of local governments to further her political power in Virginias 6th District.

The power is Jennifer Brown, who totes a law degree from Pat Robertsons university and has been the Republican chairperson of the 6th Congressional District since 2018. She was behind the election that swept into office one incumbent council member and three new ones because they called themselves conservative.

In exchange, Jennifer Brown gets bragging rights and gets the endorsement for her political manipulation to run the GOP as a Constitutional Conservative. Among her beliefs is the right to carry firearms, so expect another shot at Staunton becoming a Second Amendment sanctuary city. Among her beliefs is Ben Cline needs to be re-elected, so expect our council to be showcased in Clines fall campaign.

Among her beliefs appears to be that she is right and anyone who disagrees is wrong, so expect our city council to fall in line and stifle alternative points of view.

Jennifer Brown has turned the city council from a deliberative body to work out what is best for the citizens of the city to a political organization to ensure the well-being of the Republican Party in this part of Virginia.

While nobody has staked a claim to 21st Century Virginia PAC, that funded mailers for the four winning council members, watch for the connections to lead back to Jennifer Brown, the power behind the council.

Guest columnist Alex Kent: Defund and demilitarize the police in Amherst – GazetteNET

Published: 7/23/2020 6:33:14 PM

A neighbor of mine in Amherst has called for a comprehensive review of policing practices in our town. Not very long ago perhaps a couple of weeks ago I might have agreed with him. His recommendations would have seemed sensible and feasible, while calls to defund the police would have sounded like sheer madness.

I have changed my mind and can no longer endorse a review of policing practices, no matter how comprehensive that review may be. I believe that the entire system is rotten, rooted as it is in the oppression of Black, Indigenous and people of color, as well as in efforts to use violence to deny working peoples right to organize into labor unions.

Individual police officers may be blameless; I am sure that most officers are decent, civic-minded people who do their jobs with the best of intentions. It is the system that is corrupt, violent and destructive of the social fabric.

What I have come to understand is that a just and peaceful society cannot be built and sustained at gunpoint, when authority is delegated to people who are charged with enforcing societys rules with firearms and who carry with them at all times the threat of lethal violence. It may have been a police officers knee that choked the life out of George Floyd, but it was the sidearm strapped to the officers hip and the deep racism in his heart that made the knee an instrument of murder.

Defund and demilitarize the police: Regular police officers should not carry sidearms. And if officers feel unsafe and unable to protect themselves and the public without the ready option of deadly force, they should find another line of work. While were at it, the Second Amendment should be tossed into the scrap-heap of history and the American people should be disarmed.

I added my voice to the calls to cut the Amherst Police Departments budget in half. The money saved should be used to hire social and community workers who are trained to respond to the bulk of calls that are currently answered by police: Psychological emergencies, noisy parties, vandalism, and the like. Give these non-police community workers the authority to issue fines for violations.

We will still need some police for moving traffic violations, domestic abuse, robberies, public safety emergencies. Police should be armed only to respond to potentially violent, life-threatening situations, and they should to the greatest extent possible use only nonlethal weapons.

Reallocate money away from the APD and provide it to assist BIPOC people who want to start a business in town, or use the money to finance transitional housing for the unhoused. Use public money to help the public, not to threaten them with violence.

As Simone de Beauvoir famously said of supposedly liberal Frances response to the brutal colonization of Algeria, To protest in the name of morality against excesses or abuses is an error which hints at active complicity. There are no abuses or excesses here, simply an all-pervasive system.

Violence and the very threat of violence only begets more violence. Defund the police.

Donald Trumps Niece Mary Tells Stephen Colbert That Her Uncle Could Not Function In The Real World On His Own – Deadline

While promoting her book Too Much and Never Enough, Mary Trump has said some harsh things about her uncle, President Donald Trump. She has said the president had someone else take his SAT. She has said he used racial and anti-Semitic slurs. She has said he should resign.

But what she told Stephen Colbert on Wednesday may, well, Trump them all.

Asked if her uncle displayed sociopathic traits Mary said, Donald has so many pathologies and theyre so complex, theres so much co-morbidity that its really difficult to tease out whats exactly going on without testing.

Clearly, hes comfortable doing heartless things, she continued. Clearly he doesnt seem to be interested in empathy. So I think its safe to say he demonstrates sociopathic tendencies. I think its safe to say hes not high-functioning at all.

And then came what for the president who presents himself as a stable genius and a man of the people may be her most damning indictment. Its one that strikes at the heart of his image as a wildly successful go-getter.

Were talking about a man who I believe could not function in the real world on his own, said Mary. A crucial reason hes gotten as far as he has is hes continually protected by what I consider institutions. Hes had all of his needs taken care of. Hes never been held accountable. Hes been protected from his failures and hes been allowed to fail upward spectacularly.

Given what she knows about Donald Trump, Colbert asks Mary how it is to have her uncle as the President of the United States? Its awful, she says.

Watch the clip below.

‘Unlawful’: Coalition of states sues Trump over bid to omit undocumented immigrants from census – NBC News

A coalition of 20 states and 15 cities and counties filed suit Friday to block President Donald Trump's memo directing undocumented immigrants be excluded from the 2020 census count for purposes of deciding how many members of Congress are apportioned to each state, calling it "unlawful."

The suit, filed in New York federal court, charges that Trump's directive shows "blatant disregard of an unambiguous constitutional command" the 14th Amendment's directive that Representatives shall be apportioned among the several States according to their respective numbers, counting the whole number of persons in each State."

"For 150 years since the United States recognized the whole personhood of those formerly bound in slavery the unambiguous requirement that all persons be counted for apportionment purposes, regardless of immigration status, has been respected by every executive official, every cabinet officer, and every President. Until now," the suit said.

The Trump memo, signed earlier this week, said it will be the "policy of the United States to exclude from the apportionment base aliens who are not in a lawful immigration status under the Immigration and Nationality Act."

Let our news meet your inbox. The news and stories that matters, delivered weekday mornings.

It directs Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross, who oversees the census, to provide the president with data about the number of people who are undocumented so that when census officials present Trump with the final count, he can exclude them from the population totals used to determine how many House seats each state will have.

The lawsuit questions how the directive could feasibly be carried out, noting the administration "cannot reliably exclude undocumented immigrants from the apportionment count" because there are no accurate estimates of the undocumented population on a state-by-state basis. Any effort to remove undocumented immigrants from the census count using unreliable data is "arbitrary and capricious" and in violation of the Administrative Procedure Act, the suit said.

If the Trump move is successful, it could have a major impact on states with large numbers of undocumented residents, such as New York and California. A lower population count in the census would mean fewer seats in Congress, and potentially fewer federal dollars as well, the suit noted.

New York Attorney General Letitia James, who's leading the lawsuit, called the proclamation "the latest in a long list of anti-immigrant actions" by the president.

No one ceases to be a person because they lack documentation, which is why we filed this lawsuit," James said.

Another of the plaintiffs in the case, Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel, called Trump's actions "a clear breach of the U.S. Constitution and a blatant attempt to politicize a non-partisan process by targeting certain groups of people and advancing a biased agenda.

The suit seeks an order declaring the president's proclamation unlawful.

The Department of Justice, which would defend the case in court, did not immediately respond to an email for comment.

The administration tried last year to add a citizenship question to the census for the first time in 60 years, but the U.S. Supreme Court blocked the move.

At the 2019 Republican Retreat, Donald Trump promised his allies that he would make this election about climate change: I want to bring them way down the pike, he said, before we start criticizing the Green New Deal.Ad Policy

At his Tulsa rally in June, and in many of the campaign speeches hes given since then, the presidents long riff on the climate proved he hasnt forgotten the promise he made to Republicans. Trumps obsession with the Green New Dealfrom his fixation on the completely debunked notion that windmills cause cancer, to his nonsense about cows and hamburgers, to his racist and misogynistic ramblings about Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who introduced the Green New Deal Resolutionis much more central to his reelection effort than it appears at first glance.

For whatever reason, Trump has decided that the Green New Deala proposal to save our country from environmental and economic disasteris going to be his main electoral punching bag in the 2020 campaign.

If thats the fight he wants to pick, we say: Bring it on. And new polling shows the Democratic Party should welcome the fight, too.Climate Action

Trump and the GOP appear poised to spend the election attacking Joe Bidens plan to create millions of high-paying jobs by falsely arguing that it will cost $100 trillion, and destroy all the cows, cars, and airplanes. The goal of these absurd lies is to distract us from the truth: He and his party have no plan to address the climate crisis aside from further lining the pockets of oil and gas executives. But the American people want climate action.

New polling from Climate Power 2020 finds 71 percent favor bold government action on climate change, while only 18 percent oppose it. And talking about climate moves votes for Democrats. When presented as a choice between a Democratic congressional candidate in favor of bold climate action and an anti-action Republican, the vote moves 14 points in the Democrats favor. This jump is even bigger21 pointsfor centrist Republican and Democratic voters. These numbers are astronomical, and they make clear that running aggressively on climate is the Democratic Partys biggest political opportunity this election.

Trumps record on climate is damning. He put oil and coal lobbyists in charge of protecting our environmentand they immediately went to work rolling back over 100 environmental safeguards, allowing corporate polluters to pump more toxic pollution and chemicals into our air and water. So that companies like Chevron can keep making billions in profits and pay zero in federal taxes, hes waged a war on our clean energy industry thats cost our economy over 1.1 million jobs. Future generations will face devastating health impacts and extreme weather disasters, all because Trump spent four years allowing fossil fuel lobbyists to dictate his every move on the climate, clean energy, and the environment.Current Issue

Trump is picking this fight because he thinks he can convince voters that bold climate action is a threat, not a necessity. But hyperbolic attacks dont work. Polling shows the American people see it for what it is: another distraction from the same guy whos called both climate change and the novel coronavirus a hoax, who had the audacity to claim that thousands of Americans did not die under his watch in Puerto Rico after Hurricane Maria, and who never listens to scientists, expertsor even his own military leaders at the Pentagon, which have recognized climate change as a national security threat for years.

But heres the deal: Running boldly on tackling the climate crisis, running on a Green New Deal, these are policies that can be popular in all 50 states. Democrats should run toward, not away from these fights. The evidence is clear: If we loudly make the case for bold climate action, we will win.

Johns gray hair is a testament to our 44-year difference in age. Those familiar with each of us may not think we have a lot in common. One of us chaired Hillary Clintons 2016 campaign, and one of us was Bernie Sanderss leading climate surrogate in 2020. But were both clear: Weve never seen our country so eager to elect leaders who will take bold action to stop the climate crisis.

Neither have we ever known a country in such dire need of such bold action. In a moment of historic unemployment, Democrats want to put millions of people back to work now by investing in bold climate action that would create millions of clean energy jobs and begin to repair decades of environmental injustice. Thats what the American people want too. By 23 points, voters support investing trillions of dollars in clean energy infrastructure.

We have paid an inconceivable price for Trumps refusal to heed experts and science in a crisis. But as Americans claw out of unemployment, as folks scrape together the money to properly honor the lives they have lost, we have become unified by our acute fear of living through another crisis of this scale.

The climate crisis is the crisis we fear. Trump wants to fight about it. Thats good. So do we.

Donald Trump Bragged About It. Now You Can Wear It: Person. Woman. Man. Camera. TV. – Vogue

It was the phrase heard round the world. And now you can wear it on your chest and head and even over your mouth.

On Wednesday in an interview with Fox News, President Donald Trump, doubling down on a dubious claim he had first made on Sunday in an interview with Fox anchor Chris Wallace, went into a lengthy discussion of the cognitive test he had taken, claiming yet again that the doctors who administered the test deemed his performance amazing.

As an example, he discussed one particular question, in which he was told five words and then later asked to repeat them. As everyone now knows, those words were Person, woman, man, camera, TV. As the interviewer, Marc Siegel, looked on patiently (although a thought bubble might have read, What the hell is he talking about?), Trump continued to brag about his performance, saying that he had gotten extra points for not only remembering the words but also repeating them back in the right order. (Its actually not that easy, but for me it was easy.) He claimed the doctors had said to him, Thats amazing. How did you do that? He said he responded by saying, I do it because I have, like, a good memory, because Im cognitively there.

He then again repeated the sequence of wordsif somewhat more haltingly the second time around.

Immediately, it became the phrase of the 2020 campaign, though perhaps without the majesty of such previous slogans like Morning in America or the pop-culture knowingness of Wheres the beef? Suddenly mocking tweets, memes, and even a catchy music video appeared. Sarah Cooper, who has become a TikTok star by lip-synching Trumps speeches to hilarious effect, rushed out a funny new video. And The Late Show With Stephen Colbert produced a minute-and-a-half trailer for a new movie that examines one of the great minds in history. As a series of clips of Trump played in sequence, including him reciting those five now famous five words, an announcer intoned, He saw the world in a way no one could imagine, adding, From the makers of A Beautiful Mind comes A Good Brain...coming soon to a person, woman, man, camera, TV near you.

BOTS, INC. TO REPURPOSE THE FIRST BITCOIN CRYPTOCURRENCY BIT AND USE IT TO PAY AN INCOME PRODUCING ASSET AS DIVIDEND TO SHAREHOLDERS – GlobeNewswire

SAN JUAN, PUERTO RICO, July 24, 2020 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- SAN JUAN, PUERTO RICO, July 24, 2020 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- via NEWMEDIAWIRE -- BOTS, Inc. (OTC: BTZI) (EXCHANGE: M06.SG), an emerging innovator of products, technologies, and services for the rapidly growing digital robotic automation and manufacturing industry announced today that it is in the process of repurposing and renaming FIRST BITCOIN (COIN:BIT) into the Basic Income Token while retaining BIT as the digital currencys symbol.

There is a growing demand for a socialistic Universal Basic Income scheme in the United State of America heralded by former presidential candidate Andrew Yang, however, our capitalistic concept is to deliver an asset to our shareholders that produces income simply by keeping their wallets opened. The more wallets that remain open, the more secure the cryptocurrency becomes. This income will self-generate BITs 24/7 via Proof of Stake Mining (POS) protocol. Once we have hundreds of our 10s of thousands of shareholders keeping their wallets open, the blockchain becomes exceptionally secure.

Bots, Inc. and First Bitcoin Capital (OTC:BITCF) are working closely together to ensure a seamless transition of this major asset consisting of billions of BITs. Once the name of BIT is changed to Basic Income Token, Bots Inc. intends to distribute 1 BIT for each share of Bots Inc. to be held on a record date to be set for distribution as soon as August30, 2020.

This asset is only one cryptocurrency of a larger inventory of more than 100 unique digital cryptocurrencies acquired from and previously owned by First Bitcoin Capital Corp. The most significant of the transferences of these cryptocurrencies to Bots Inc., included, but was not limited to, the majority ownership of First Bitcoin (COIN:BIT), a cryptocurrency based on a unique blockchain similar to an improved version of Litecoin, This coin trades on Livecoin.net with BIT included on the premier website for tracking of cryptocurrencies via https://coinmarketcap.com/currencies/first-bitcoin/

Additionally BOTS, Inc. in conjunction with First Bitcoin Capital has generated managed units of a newly minted cryptocurrency based on Bitcoins blockchain utilizing the Omni protocols also used by Tether (COIN:USDT) in an effort to alternatively fulfill Yangs vision, defined as follows:

Universal Basic Income (COIN:UBI) commemorates the presidential candidate Andrew Yangs plan for distributing $1000 per month per citizen so that each world citizen is entitled to 1000 UBI per month upon request from Bots, Inc.

Those whom request this monthly UBI distribution will be required to cover Bots nominal Bitcoin transference costs and both Bots and First Bitcoin Capital will share in a 1% transference fee to be earned in kind. We will develop unique bots that will handle the inclusion of each requesting world- citizen wishing to use our automation in order to handle the sign ups and transfers stated newly elected Company Chairman, Simon Rubin.

The creation of UBI which is under the management of Bots Inc and First Bitcoin Capital can be witnessed here:

Will Cryptocurrency-Based Credit Cards Be The Next Big Thing In India? – Inc42 Media

Global payments company Mastercard has authorised cryptocurrency platform Wirex to issue payments cards for virtual currencies

Mastercard has also accelerated its crypto card partner programme

Cryptocurrency exchanges in India have seen a massive increase in adoption during the lockdown

Global payments company Mastercard, on July 20, announced the acceleration of its crypto card partner program, making it easier for consumers to hold and activate cryptocurrencies. As part of the initiative, Wirex was the first native cryptocurrency platform to be granted principal Mastercard membership, allowing it to directly issue payment cards for virtual currencies.

Wirex consumers will now be able to convert their cryptocurrencies to traditional fiat currencies, payable at locations around the world where Mastercard is accepted. Mastercards move is bound to positively affect the burgeoning community of cryptocurrency traders in India, especially since the community received a fresh lease of life in March when the Supreme Court quashed an RBI circular from 2018, which had imposed a banking ban on cryptocurrencies in India. The apex court, in its order, noted that the RBI circular was unconstitutional. It said that in the absence of legislation for regulating the use of cryptocurrencies in India, their use must be treated as legitimate trade that is protected by the fundamental right to carry on any occupation, trade or business under Article 19(1)(g) of the Constitution.

The order was hailed across sections of the Indian crypto community for bringing a just conclusion to the fight led by two petitioners, the Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI) and a group of corporations who run crypto exchange platforms in India.

This positive judgement will open doors to massive crypto adoption in India. It proves that we can now innovate, and the entire country can participate in the blockchain revolution, Nischal Shetty, CEO of local crypto exchange WazirX said at the time.

Ever since the order, there has been a surge in activity by cryptocurrency startups in India. Earlier this month, IT services company Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) launched a cryptocurrency trading platform called Quartz Smart Solution for banks and investments. The platform supports multiple cryptocurrencies, digital assets, digital coins linked to fiat currencies, trading channels and public blockchain networks, offering choice and flexibility to customers in their trading and investment strategies. It has been developed in partnership with Quartz, a blockchain startup incubated by TCS.

While cryptocurrency exchange CoinDCX has launched a new platform called DCX Learn to promote educational content on cryptocurrency and blockchain, CoinSwitch launched an Indian rupee (INR) cryptocurrency exchange mobile application named Kuber. For some platforms such as WazirX, the Covid-19 induced lockdown meant a 400% increase in trading activity.

The Mastercard move is a potent boost for cryptocurrencies in India, given the payments companys rapidly expanding presence in the country. From increasing its investment in India-focused research and development initiatives to partnering and investing in local startups for building innovative solutions in the payments ecosystem, Mastercards presence in the Indian fintech sector is robust. The company plans to invest $1 Bn in India and double its headcount in the country over the next five to six years.

This factor is supplemented by the positive outlook for the proliferation of credit cards in India. According to a draft document filed by the State Bank of India (SBI), factors such as a young tech-savvy population and the possibility of EMI payment options could see credit card users in the country increase by a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 25%. The number of credit cards issued stands at 47 Mn in FY19, having grown at a CAGR of 20.0% over the last five years, and is expected to grow by 25% from FY19 to FY20, said the draft document.

The traction gained by global cryptocurrency exchanges from India has been on the rise for a while now. According to cryptocurrency research platform Coinpaprika and global crypto exchange OKEx, India is poised to gain considerable global market share of crypto transactions this year. OKEx claimed that its newly registered users from India had increased by 4100% during the first quarter of 2020.

The presence of a Mastercard certified cryptocurrency exchange platform could just be the boost needed for the virtual currency trading community in India. Although, Wirexs presence in India is limited. Indian users can only make an account on the platform, but top-ups from local payment cards are yet to be allowed. While Wirex is yet to offer its VISA payment cards in India, the company says that its also working with a new card issuer (Mastercard) to roll out more payment cards for customers. Considering Mastercards footprint in the Indian payments ecosystem, theres a genuine possibility of Wirex soon launching its payment cards for India as well.

Further, Wirex wont be the only cryptocurrency platform to be ratified by Mastercard, with the latter looking to onboard various such exchanges as part of its crypto card partner program.

An assessment of the future of cryptocurrency in India wont be complete without mentioning the benefits it could bring for the country. The Indian diaspora, at 17.5 Mn, is the largest in the world, according to the United Nations (UN) International Migrant Stock Report 2019. Owing to its humungous overseas population, in 2018, India was the highest recipient of foreign remittances at $79 Bn. Sending these remittances through traditional channels is expensive and time-consuming. However, blockchain technology enables the cross-border transfer of crypto funds in a matter of minutes. According to experts, the scale of the Indian market, with a growing and aspirational middle class and the increased push towards digital payments, is tailor-made for a crypto revolution in the country.

Buoyed by the SC order, global crypto exchange platforms have also shown a willingness to invest in the country. However, a sense of doubt over the legality and use of cryptocurrencies persists. Last month, the Finance Ministry, seeking to introduce legislation for a blanket ban on cryptocurrency, moved a note in the parliament for inter-ministerial consultations.

Governments have long been hostile towards cryptocurrencies, given that they function in the virtual domain, outside the purview of the central bank, and are seen to be instruments of funding for terrorism and other anti-social activities. Last year, there was also the proposal of a draft law, Banning of Cryptocurrency and Regulation of Official Digital Currency Bill 2019. While the Parliament is yet to approve this bill, it would be interesting to see if the push for Digital India would be willing to assimilate and own the quiet revolution led by the cryptocurrency community.

DOJ Takes a Stance on Section 230 Reform that Could Place Additional Burdens on Online Platforms – JD Supra

The Department of Justice (DOJ) recently outlined proposed reforms to Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act of 1996.[1] Section 230 has been in place since the early days of the Internet and protects online platforms from liability for certain third-party posts. It has recently become a point of contention between Big Tech and the Trump Administration. Recently, a presidential tweet was labeled with a fact-checking message that described the content as unsubstantiated.[2] The President claimed the label was intended to chill his rights under the First Amendment and subsequently signed the Executive Order on Preventing Online Censorship, calling for review and clarification of the scope of Section 230. The Executive Order also calls on the Secretary of Commerce and the Attorney General to engage in rule-making with the Federal Communications Commission to clarify when a tech company could be deemed to be taking part in not taken in good faith.[3] Additionally, the Order encouraged the Federal Trade Commission to investigate unfair or deceptive acts or practices committed by online platforms.

How did this relatively small piece of legislation become the center of a heated debate?

By way of background, Section 230 shields websites from legal liability for posts, including comments, images, and videos, of third-party users. At the time this legislation was passed, the Internet was vastly different from what it is today. In the 90s, as the tech world was beginning to grow, Congress sought to encourage that growth through statutory protections. Section 230 provides websites with immunity for posts left by users, and allows for Good Samaritan protection from civil lawsuits if websites remove or moderate posts that they consider to be obscene, lewd, lascivious, filthy, excessively violent, harassing, or otherwise objectionable.[4] This way, websites can still clean up posted content without having to worry about being targeted via lawsuits for choosing to police and self-regulate their own domains, so long as they do so in good faith.

Section 230 allows platforms to be available to all users to share, gather, and disseminate information. Websites, especially those with enormous platforms, host millions upon millions of individual posts every single day. Even with dedicated moderators and advanced algorithms in place, it is a huge undertaking to examine every single post to determine whether it is illegal or inappropriate; and even with a robust procedure in place, it is hardly fail-safe. But there is growing concern about who gets the final say about what is considered inappropriate and when it should be revised, removed, or labeled. Section 230 has become a flashpoint and raises complex First Amendment, online safety, and competition considerations.

The Executive Order alone might not seem like it has teeth, unless Congress agrees with the President and passes legislation that repeals or amends Section 230. But the rule-making prompted by the Executive Order could shift interpretation of the law, calling into doubt the wide protections enjoyed by tech companies. Moreover, Attorney General William Barr has been vocal about his concerns regarding Section 230 and its protections, prompting the DOJ to seriously examine the law to propose a way forward.

In February, the DOJ hosted a one-day workshop called Section 230 Nurturing Innovation or Fostering Unaccountability? inviting both public and private stakeholders to confer about the laws transformation since its enactment to the present day and whether it needs to be modified to account for this new era of Big Tech. The DOJ states that it also met with companies that attended or indicated interest in talking about Section 230, although it is unclear which companies that included.

Last month, following its 10-month review of the law, the DOJ released its recommendations for Section 230 reform.[5] Rather than seek a complete repeal of the legislation, the DOJ identified four key categories where reform should take place in order to realign the scope of Section 230 with the realities of the modern internet.[6] These four areas are (1) Incentivizing Online Platforms to Address Illicit Content, (2) Clarifying Federal Government Enforcement Capabilities to Address Unlawful Content, (3) Promoting Competition, and (4) Promoting Open Discourse and Greater Transparency.[7]

The first category seeks to strip away protection from those who purposely facilitate or solicit unlawful content and allows for civil lawsuits involving child abuse, terrorism, and cyber-stalking to proceed, thus incentivizing websites to be proactive about tracking and removing illegal content. The second category proposes more government intervention through civil enforcement actions. The third category seeks to clarify that companies cannot use Section 230 to protect themselves from antitrust actions where liability is based on harm to competition, not on third-party speech.[8] Finally, the fourth category is aimed at refining the language of Section 230, including an addition of good faith.

Some argue that Section 230 should be updated to address some of the potential dangers of the growing Internet that were not present in 1996. If this effort gains more traction, many view it as imperative that tech representatives be involved in the conversation because they are the experts in devising the algorithms and training the moderators to track down illegal and harmful content. A companys role and responsibility to police, remove, and/or label content may implicate complex First Amendment concerns. There may not be a one-size-fits-all approach to updating Section 230 to address all posted content in all types of forums. Many will be watching to see whether there will be changes to this law that has helped fuel online growth.

Theres no right to infect – Sarasota Herald-Tribune

"I don't need a mask!" declared the San Diego woman to a Starbucks barista. The woman apparently believed she had a right to enter mask-free, contrary to the coffee bar's policy.

A surprising number of Americans treat expectations of mask-wearing during the coronavirus pandemic in a similar way as if these expectations were paternalistic, limiting people's liberty for their own good. They are dead wrong.

Their thinking reflects what we might call "faux libertarianism," a deformation of the classic liberal theory. Libertarianism is the political and moral philosophy according to which everyone has rights to life, liberty and property and various specific rights that flow from these fundamental ones.

Libertarian rights are rights of noninterference, rather than entitlements to be provided with services. So your right to life is a right not to be killed and does not include a right to life-sustaining health care services. And your right to property is a right to acquire and retain property through your own lawful actions, not a right to be provided with property.

Libertarianism lies at the opposite end of the political spectrum from socialism, which asserts positive rights to such basic needs as food, clothing, housing and health care. According to libertarianism, a fundamental right to liberty supports several more specific rights, including freedom of movement, freedom of association and freedom of religious worship. Neither the state nor other individuals may violate these rights of competent adults for their own protection. To do so would be unjustifiably paternalistic, say libertarians, treating grown-ups as if they needed parenting.

Why do I claim that Americans who resist mask-wearing in public embrace faux libertarianism, a disfigured version of the classic liberty-loving philosophy? Because they miss the fact that a compelling justification for mask-wearing rules is not paternalistic at all not focused on the agent's own good but rather appeals to people's responsibilities regarding public health. This point is entirely consistent with libertarianism.

Consider your right to freedom of movement. This right does not include a right to punch someone in the face, unless you both agree to a boxing match, and does not include a right to enter someone else's house without an invitation. Rights extend only so far.

Once we appreciate that rights have boundaries, rather than being limitless, we can see the relationship between liberty rights and public health.

Your rights to freedom of movement, freedom of association, and so on do not encompass a prerogative to place others at undue risk. This idea justifies our sensible laws against drunk driving. So even a libertarian can, and should, applaud Starbucks and its barista for insisting on mask-wearing during the coronavirus pandemic.

The fallacy of faux libertarianism is thinking that liberty rights have unlimited scope. That would mean there could be no legitimate laws or social norms since all laws and norms limit liberty in some way or another. Then the only legitimate government would be no government at all. And if no social norms were legitimate, then each of us would lack not only legal rights but also moral rights. In that case, we would have no right to liberty or anything else.

I am no fan of libertarianism, which I find problematic. But it is far more compelling than its incoherent impostor, faux libertarianism. Mask up, people, before you enter crowded, public spaces!

According to the authors of the book Omid ScobieandCarolyn Durand, who have been working on the book since 2018 and claim to have spoken to over 100 sources close to the couple, the Sussexes resented not being able to be the royals they wanted to be.

The pair were particularly upset when they were told that after splitting from the Cambridges and leaving Kensington Palace, their new household would be under the umbrella of the Queens office at Buckingham Palace which they reveal was a big disappointment to them.

Courtiers disliked Meghan- Harry

In the excerpt published in theTimes, Harry claims he felt unprotected by his family and not taken seriously by palace courtiers who felt he was too sensitive and outspoken. According to sources who spoke to the authors, Harry believed that some courtiers simply didnt like Meghan and would stop at nothing to make her life difficult.

The extract was published the day after Harry and Meghan launched a new lawsuit over an alleged paparazzi intrusion at their home in Los Angeles, in which photographs were taken of their son Archie. Harry feels that there were so many occasions when the institution and his family could have helped them, stood up for them, backed them up, and never did, a source told the authors.

Fundamentally, Harry wanted out, a source close to the couple revealed. Deep down, he was always struggling within that world. Shes opened the door for him on that.

The courtiers blame Meghan, and some family do, another source said of the couple leaving the royal family.

Group gathers in Lynchburg Saturday afternoon for freedom walk, rally to bear arms – WFXRtv.com

by: Hazelmarie Anderson, WFXRtv.com Digital Desk

LYNCHBURG, Va. (WFXR) New gun laws took effect in the Commonwealth at the beginning of July, but some people in the Lynchburg area say they are not too happy about it.

A group of people gathered in downtown Lynchburg at Riverfront Park on Saturday, July 18, for one cause.

President of Right to Bear Arms Virginia, Brandon Howard, said, We educate and we advocate for the individual persons and citizens protection under the Second Amendment of the U.S. Constitution; Article One, Section 13 under the Virginia Constitution; as well as the laws of the Commonwealth.

With long guns in hand and others strapped to their waist, the group took a two-mile freedom walk around downtown Lynchburg as part of the demonstration.

Its important to show the public that were not scary, black-rifle people, said John Hinkle, one of the gun owners in attendance. We come from all areas of civilian life, and were not out to harm anybody and were not here to aggravate anybody and were not aggressive. We are peaceful citizens.

The group wants to educate the public and let them know there are safe ways to carry firearms and exercise their rights.

We show them law abiding citizens can safely and legally carry a fire arm in public responsibly, said Howard.

Attorney Chuck Smith said, We are here to tell them to know youre not gonna touch our Second Amendment right, not now, not tomorrow, not ever.

Gun supporters at the rally Saturday afternoon took a stance with regard to the new gun control laws in the Commonwealth.

As Appomattox County Supervisor, I am introducing a resolution at Monday nights board meeting to propose no new gun laws in Appomattox County, said Hinkle.

I think whether you are a gun lover or whether youre just a regular citizen, you ought to have a stake in whether Constitutional rights can be divvied up by Governor Northam, said Smith, whether those can be passed to individual cities and counties.

Through a peaceful rally and freedom walk, the groups message about those controversial laws came across clearly.

Were not just here trying to protect just the Second Amendment, said Smith. Our challenge is against a government that believes they can change anything of the United States Constitution at their whim.

Back in January, the Lynchburg City Council voted 5-2 against allowing the city to join a growing list of Second Amendment sanctuaries across the Commonwealth.

The Right to Bear Arms Virginia is currently working to host another event in the near future, with the goal of educating the public about owning firearms while also breaking the stigma surrounding guns by carrying them responsibly in public. .

American freedom fighters are killing themselves and their fellow Americans; what to do? – NationofChange

Youve seen them on TV, extremely angry, very vocal Americans who are obsessed with protecting their freedoms. When they are asked why they refuse to wear masks and practice social distancing, and why they take part in large crowds drinking and having a great time, they shout out that nobody is going to tell them what to do, nobody is going to take away their freedoms.

By refusing to wear masks and practice social distancing these freedom fighters are, risking their own lives as well as those of other Americans. When they are made aware of that fact it appears that they just dont give a damn. Their freedoms are #1, above all else.

We have to find a way to bring these people to their senses so their behavior doesnt continue to make this dire situation we are in even worse. Here are some thoughts on how to do it.

Lets begin with grocery stores. A great many of them have posted signs that inform shoppers that they must wear masks before entering. Many grocery chains such as Meijers, Marianos, Jewel Osco, Kroger, and others have said that masks are mandatory. The six stores in my area all require them. As this pandemic continues and, most likely will get a lot worse, then we will see most every grocery chain do the same.

When these freedom fighters attempt to enter these stores without masks they will be turned away. If they try to force their way into stores they will risk being arrested by the police.

When most groceries are doing this it will help a great deal but its not nearly enough. Some good things are already happening. Huge chain stores like Walmart, Target, Kohls, JC Penny, and others are now requiring that people wear masks. The same is true for hardware chains such as Lowes and Home Depot. Auto dealerships should follow suit.

There is another major problem that needs to be addressed. In Florida and some other states, there are pandemic parties being held. They are one of the main causes of the huge upsurge in virus cases. What these people are doing in the middle of this crisis is both reckless and unconscionable.

They must be stopped and thats the job of the police. We saw the power of the police when they were confronting and controlling protesters in various cities. We need to see that same kind of power, but not vicious, used in Florida, California, and other states where these parties are taking place. Should any of these fun-lovers get tossed into jail then maybe they will finally come to their senses.

Now, as we try to come up with ideas on how to cope with this crisis what about Mr. Trump? What ideas does he have, what solutions does he have to the problems that face America? Ideas, from Trump, are you kidding? His next idea will probably be his first. Hes not in the middle of the action, hes sitting on the sidelines just watching and thinking about other things that he wants to do, such as finding ways to take Joe Biden down.

America desperately needs the best leadership at this time, but its just not there. Trump is incapable and he knows it. Its so bad that. not only cant he lead, but he cant even follow; that is, he cant follow the advice and direction of Dr. Fauci and the CDC. The fact of the matter is that he is stymying their efforts to the point that the governors of various states cant even figure out who is in charge.

Breaking News!I was just watching the ABC news program with host David Muir and he reported that, at the start of Trumps virus progress report, the president stated that Americans should wear masks and practice social distancing. Well, I was stunned and almost fell off my chair. Absolutely unbelievable. But, that raises this question: why in the world didnt he do this months ago, why did he wait so very long? Think about how many Americans would still be alive today if he had done this in, lets say, early February.

Now, back to the freedom fighters. They can continue to possess their freedom, no one is going to take them away. But when their governors or mayors mandate that they must wear masks, and not congregate in large groups, then they must adhere to these orders or face a stiff fine, or maybe even worse.

If these freedom fighters want to obtain food or clothing or some service from businesses in the future, they will have to pay a price before they will be allowed to enter stores. That price will be the wearing of masks. So, heres some advice for them. Pay the price or just stay out, go away.

Ascension Academy to Return In-Person this Fall – KAMR – MyHighPlains.com

Posted: Jul 20, 2020 / 12:08 PM CDT / Updated: Jul 20, 2020 / 12:08 PM CDT

AMARILLO, Texas (PRESS RELEASE) Ascension Academy will be reopening with in-person instruction for both the middle and high school this fall. The reopening plan was developed based on feedback from parents, several meetings with administration and Faculty, advice from a parent who is a medical doctor, and guidelines set forth by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Texas Education Agency (TEA), the Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools (TAPPS), and others.

Screening will be conducted before students are allowed inside the building to check for high temperatures and any COVID-19 symptoms. Students will then be instructed to immediately go to their lockers and first period classes. Masks will be required by students, staff and visitors. Teachers will be provided with clear face shields to wear during instruction while keeping a distance of six feet from students.

Ascension Academy fully intends to open in Fall with in-person instruction, said Head of School Tim Oditt. We are planning internally to do just that with the fullest commitment to the safety of each of our students and staff members. The importance of in-person education cannot be overstated and Ascension is committed to living its mission of providing an exemplary college preparatory education in a challenging, faith-affirming environment to maximize the potential of every student.

To promote social distancing, classrooms will be rearranged to provide the maximum distance possible between students. School assemblies and all school gatherings outside of emergency drills have been cancelled or will be held online. Ascension will follow all guidelines established by TAPPS with regard to the ability to return to play athletics. More information will be provided to parents as TAPPS updates roll out.

Cleaning and sanitation will be a top priority around the clock, and high touch points such as desks, door knobs, and bathrooms will be sanitized continuously throughout the day. Lunch will be spread out between the gym, theatre stage and cafeteria and all areas will be cleaned between middle school and high school lunch periods. Deep sanitation will occur nightly with the use of the Clorox Total 360 System, which kills 99.9% of bacteria in five seconds, including the sides and underneath of hard to clean surfaces such as desks and chairs.

In addition to the extra cleaning and health measures, Ascension has added two weeks of instruction into their academic calendar. The days will give flexibility throughout the year in the event of local or state mandated shut down of schools. These days of instruction will include Labor Day, Columbus Day, the Monday and Tuesday of Thanksgiving week, and the first week in June. If the additional days are not used, Ascension will end school on the originally scheduled day in May.
