Sports and leisure facilities, playgrounds, restaurants, cafes, and garden areas; these are just some of the proposed plans that will go ahead, as announced by the government during this years Policy Address.Some of the projects, which were announced at the Legislative Assembly (AL) by the Secretary for Administration and Justice, Andr Cheong on April 24, have already started development and will be concluded before the year ends.One of the most ambitious projects is located at Macaus seafront. This project promises to reshape the whole coastal area from the Science Center to Barra.Works on the project started on May 15 and the first phase is expected to last 208 days, that is, until December 9. The government also announced that it will be investing some 60 million patacas in this project and aims to create some 200 jobs.According to the Policy Address, a similar project will also begin in due course at Hac Sa Beach in Coloane after the governments retrieval of several land plots in that area.In a statement, the Municipal Affairs Bureau (IAM) said that the ongoing construction works in the first phase of the coastal project between the Science Center and the Statue of Goddess Kun Iam in NAPE came in response to the community calling for more recreational and leisure areas to be built along coastal areas.IAM will build, in a phased manner, a green corridor on the south bank of Macau, connecting the Science Center to Goddess Kun Iam and Barra, providing a diversified coastal leisure space and building a healthy city for the people of Macau, the statement says.In this first phase, the project spans an area of 15,000 square meters from the Science Center to the Statue of Goddess Kun Iam and will include, among other infrastructure, a childrens playground, a walking/jogging track, esplanade, and multisport fields, physical exercise equipment, a gate-ball field, and a skating rink.Preparations to build a cycling path linking this area to Barra will begin in the first phase, and will subsequently be built in the second phase.The IAM also noted that the works under development are being done according to the government policy of work instead of subsidies, started by Chief Executive Ho Iat Seng, whose goal is to create more jobs and business opportunities for people and private companies instead of promoting government subsidies.Several other projects moving forward are included in the same package but are of much smaller scale. They include the reconstruction of the Sai Van Lake pedestrian area that started early this month and is expected to finish by the end of November, and the renovation of Chunambeiro Park which began in early June and should reach completion before the end of September.As for the large-scale leisure complex that will be created at Hac Sa Beach, the plan states that the whole area, including the existing facilities for picnic, playgrounds and the swimming pool, will be upgraded giving way to new sports and recreational spaces, as well as significant improvements made to the camping site and horticulture area.The many projects under Cheongs purview aim to meet the call for more quality spaces in Macau to fulfill the demands of Macau as a World Center of Tourism and Leisure, the Secretary said at the AL during the Policy Address discussion.At the time, Cheong also mentioned that those projects include some of the idle land retrieved in the past few years by the government to put them to good use for the population.As another example, the Secretary mentioned four land plots reclaimed by the government at Doca do Lam Mau where the government now proposes to build sports fields, physical exercise areas, and playgrounds on an area of around 3,700 square meters.

‘Parts of Spain safer than UK’, PM Sanchez says – Macau Business

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has hit back at Britains move to quarantine all travellers returning home from Spain, saying parts of the country are safer than the UK.

The Spanish leader defended the Balearic and Canary islands, Andalucia and the Valencia region favourite summer holiday destinations for Britons saying they had a cumulative incidence of the virus that is lower than that currently in the United Kingdom.

That is to say, in epidemiological terms, it might even be safer at these destinations than in the United Kingdom, Sanchez told the private channel Telecinco in an interview late Monday.

The spread of the infection in Spain was uneven, he said, with two-thirds of new cases registered in just two regions Aragon and Catalonia,where the regional authorities have urged residents of metropolitan Barcelona and another city to stay at home.

Madrid was in talks with London to try to convince them to reconsider the measure, which in our opinion is unbalanced, he said.

British tourists are the largest national group of visitors to Spain, with 18 million of them visiting the country last year.

The quarantine decision is a major blow to Spains tourist industry, which accounts for 12 percent of gross domestic product and 13 percent of employment.

We will continue working with the British authorities, Sanchez said, adding that in a significant part of the country, the epidemic is well under control.

Foreign Minister Arancha Gonzalez Laya had on Sunday tried to allay fears after some countries reimposed travel restrictions on Spain.

Spain is a safe country, she told reporters. Like other European countries, Spain has new outbreaks. Its not unusual.

Madrid is making great efforts to control these outbreaks, she said after nearly 1,000 new cases were reported on Thursday and Friday.

The number of COVID-19 cases has tripled in two weeks, and the authorities are monitoring more than 360 outbreaks.

Passengers from Spain arriving in the UK must now spend a fortnight in isolation, with Norway imposing similar conditions.

On Friday, French Prime Minister Jean Castex strongly recommended that people avoid going to northeastern Spain, the worst-hit area.

Spain has been badly hit by the pandemic, which has so far claimed more than 28,400 lives and infected more than 272,400 people, declaring a lockdown and state of emergency in mid-March which only lifted on June 21.

Virus-hit Iran warns against weddings and funerals – Macau Business

Tehran on Monday warned Iranians against holding wedding and funeral gatherings as the countrys novel coronavirus outbreak showed no signs of abating, claiming another 212 lives.

Despite repeated calls to not hold weddings and mourning ceremonies, reports from across the country still indicate they are taking place, said health ministry spokeswoman Sima Sadat Lari.

The presence of people at these overcrowded events increases the risk of mass infection, she added, in remarks aired on state television.

While there is no nationwide ban on weddings and funerals, the venues in which they are staged have been ordered shut and authorities have repeatedly urged people to keep such gatherings small.

The Islamic republic has been battling to contain the Middle Easts deadliest novel coronavirus outbreak since announcing its first cases on February 19.

Lari said another 212 people had died of the COVID-19 illness in the past 24 hours, bringing the countrys overall death toll since February to 15,912.

She added that 2,434 new infections during the same period took the total caseload to 293,606.

Government spokesman Ali Rabiei has also tested positive for the novel coronavirus, state news agency IRNA reported on Monday.

Rabiei had been resting at home since late last week after showing some symptoms but has since been hospitalised, IRNA added.

He is the latest high-profile Iranian official to contract the novel coronavirus. Several have died but most have recovered.

Virus-related deaths and infections in Iran have risen to record highs since hitting months-long lows in May.

That has prompted authorities to make masks mandatory in enclosed public spaces and reimpose restrictions in some areas.

JOB LOSS figures are expected to rise for some time in Northern Ireland as the country continues to grapple with Covid-19.

Economists are predicting further redundancies over the coming weeks and months despite record job loss numbers being recorded in Northern Ireland in June - with 2,473 in total according to Statistics body NISRA.

An incredible 83 jobs a day were lost across the country during June with economists warning that unemployment will soar when government employment schemes end later this year.

The news comes in the wake of Co. Down-based aerospace company announcing that it is cutting 235 jobs, almost a quarter of its workforce.

In a statement, the company pointed the finger at Covid-19's "impact on demand for aerospace production" as reasons for the redundancies.

SDLP South Down MLA Sinead Bradley described it as a "devastating blow" to the local economy.

In a statement, a spokesperson for the company said "this is a critical step to ensuring that Collins Aerospace emerges strong once this crisis is contained".

Faiqa Anbreen

FAIQA Anbreen is an aerospace engineer pursuing doctorate in Engineering and Mathematics in United States.

As a young girl fascinated by physics and mathematics, she made up her mind to be among stars after watching televised crash of the celebrated Indian astronauts space shuttle.

Her resolve to make a name in a male-dominated profession has already made Faiqa an inspiration for many youngsters back home.

In a candid chat with Kashmir Observer, the aerospace girl talks about her passion and profession.

Please tell us something about your current professional engagements and your academic journey?

Well, Im a Ph.D. student in aerospace engineering and computational mathematics at California State University and Claremont Graduate University. I also work for Safran as a proposal engineer.

Safran is an international high-technology company catering to aviation, space and defense markets.

I did my initial schooling from Shiekhul Alam Islamic Model (SIM) School, Charari Sharief and later on joined Delhi Public School (DPS), Srinagar where I passed my Senior Secondary School Examination.

Both these schools had a constructive role in shaping up who I am today. SIM offered a decent environment to be able to ask questions but DPS offered more resources and a platform to develop a multi-dimensional personality.

Later on, I started my career at Amity University where I finished Bachelors in Aerospace Engineering, and then I came to US for Masters at California State University.

Aerospace is one of the toughest engineering streams, how did you get into it?

As a curious child, when someone used to ask me about my career goals, my response would be a scientist.

When you start learning about great scientists like Isaac Newton and Albert Einstein, it gets quite fascinating to know how they came up with such complicated laws and equations. Only with time, one realizes that it takes an enormous effort and dedication to be a scientist.

Ive always been interested in reading about planets, stars, and creation of the universe and would ask teachers questions to which sometimes they wouldnt even have answers.

In 2003, I watched space shuttle Columbia disintegrating on re-entry into the earths atmosphere. Returning from a space mission, it took precious lives of six astronauts. It may sound counterintuitive that a disaster helped me shape up an idea in my head that I want to become an aerospace engineer.

Kalpana Chawla, the first Indian astronaut, got killed in that accident. Reading her biography has always been exciting. What she studied and how she reached NASA always intrigued me. It was this event that in some way helped me to decide and pursue Aerospace Engineering as a career choice.

But now, all the research I am doing is more motivated by working on something that furthers the aerospace technology and solve some of the unexplored problems of computational fluid dynamics.

Throughout your academic journey, what kept you motivated, focused and energized to keep going?

I feel as humans, we continue to keep finding the meaning of life. Theres a curiosity and inquisition that keeps pushing you to know more about this universe and existence. And I consider science feeds to that curiosity within me.

Aerospace is all about physics and mathematics. Those things keep me interested and motivated.

I still sometimes go back to read Class 9 Physics textbook, where we start understanding physics at a detailed level. Physics is at the heart of the whole universe. The manifestations of the subject amaze me, from the order of the universe to the music; it keeps me glued to what Im studying and what I want to do in the future.

Besides, I have always tried to be well-balanced in everything I do.

Data shows that there arent many women in this area. So how does it feel to create a niche in a male-dominated field?

Taking up aerospace engineering after Class 12 was like jumping into a dark well. I didnt know anyone in this field I could consult, I hadnt checked any statistics. All I was doing was following my instincts and believing in myself. I always focused on the work rather than the difficulties and limitations.

I have had situations where I have been the only woman in a group of male engineers doing projects or working with them. This not only inspires me in many ways but also makes me realize that we should have more women in this field.

When I look back, I dont see many precedents among women to follow from Kashmir but I think there are a lot in the coming generation who have demonstrated enormous interest in the field who look up to me as a precedent. And I try my best to pass on my experiences to whoever approaches me.

Knowing yourself is the beginning of all wisdom. Whatve you learned about yourself in this journey?

Its certain that we live life forwards but its amusing that we learn and understand about life backwards.

When we look back at the phases of life we have lived, the reflections of those become the steps of the staircase of experiences we climb on, towards more meaningfulness. It has been a natural progression towards learning about sensitivities and human biases, only after being exposed by living on my own in foreign lands from the last 11 years.

The most important learning that I would like to share is being open to criticism. Thank your critics for they are the people who help you in becoming better and bigger.

Taking criticism is very hard and people usually get offended by it, but for me, Ive only realized how important feedback is for personal as well as professional growth.

Also, we are unknowingly wrapped up in a number of biases and the whole struggle is to take yourself out of them one by one.

I see life in pieces. For a moment I live in those small pieces. And its only when you look back, youre able to see what the journey was about.

You said since your childhood days you were keen about giving back to the society. How do you intend to do that now?

Well, my idea of giving back to humanity is to develop faster planes one day. Its one of my core interests.

Im part of JK Scientists, an NGO run by Kashmiri scientists and professionals all over the world. Also, whenever Im home, I try to be part of student outreach programs to interact with students and mentor them.

With all the work youve done, are you interested in going up in space one day?

Ive always had this dream of traveling to space and wanting to be an astronaut.

But being an astronaut is like one in a million jobs which literally takes a lot of learning and experience to get selected. The work I have done so far is just the stepping stone, but to go to space one day I have a thousand miles to go. For now, it looks like a distant dream, but I will keep dreaming.

Whats the biggest challenge youve faced as a woman in aerospace industry?

Its very important to have good self-esteem and to keep reminding yourself that youre not alone, and therere other women out there in diverse fields. Youve to keep feeling it and be confident that you can compete with men at the same level.

Thats a bit challenging when you talk in general terms but personally speaking, I havent faced any challenges that I can count on. Ive found great mentors and colleagues who I learn from every day and whove always been there to guide me through.

Whats the most memorable opportunity you have had as an aerospace engineer?

Well, it was to work as a design engineer for A350 which is the latest Airbus aircraft. I have designed some parts which are flying onboard. I cherish that most memorable opportunity.

How long will it take for the aerospace industry to recover from the impacts of Covid-19?

As per the estimates by the aircraft manufacturing giants Airbus and Boeing, the aerospace industry is expected to recover by 2023.

Already, the pandemic has impacted the aerospace industry very badly. We are seeing grounding of fleets, thousands of planes that should be in the sky are lying on the tarmac. There is the cancellation of orders of new planes, slashing down of expected aircraft deliveries for this year, and retiring of old fleets like Boeing767.

Also, airlines around the globe are seeking help from the governments to avoid a potential collapse. The number of aircrafts in passenger service fell by more than 60 percent from the start of the year. It will take time to bring the production rate back to what should have been now.

Any word for people back home?

My interactions with Kashmiri students make me believe that children arent allowed to pursue their dreams easily, especially girls.

Parents impose their opinions and career choices on their children without considering what talent and interest the child has.

Students should stay persistent with what they want to do in life. They must believe in themselves, and make the people around them believe in their talent. Dont give up easily on your dreams.

For parents out there, I would say believe in your children, empower and guide them by letting them learn on their own by experiencing and exploring.

Family is the one of the most important influences in a childs life and family support plays a significant role in our success as individuals and as members of the society.

Personally speaking, my parents especially my mother always supported me to do what I was passionate about.

For those who want to pursue a career in aerospace, I would say read and familiarize yourself with the field and understand what you are getting into. It is a very vast field and has a lot of opportunities to explore.

WASHINGTON U.S. Navy anti-air warfare experts needed an electronics manufacturer to build sensors and weapons tactical networking terminals for the carrier-based E-2C and E-2D airborne early warning aircraft. They found their solution from the DRS Laurel Technologies segment of Leonardo DRS in Johnstown, Pa.

Officials of the Naval Sea Systems Command in Washington announced an $10 million order to DRS Laurel on Friday to build AN/USG-3B Cooperative Engagement Capability (CEC) equipment sets and installation and checkout replacement components.

The CEC is a tactical sensor and weapons network for anti-air warfare that combines information from sensors operating over broadly distributed geographic areas in a common tactical picture for battle groups at sea. CEC avionics improves overall situational awareness, and enables fleet commanders to work closely together to attack enemy forces from long ranges.

The AN/USG-3 is the airborne designation of CEC deployed in E-2C and E-2D aircraft. Other CEC terminals are aboard Navy surface warships; U.S. Marine Corps command posts, aviation command-and-control centers, and surveillance aerostats.

CEC blends sensors and weapons into an integrated real-time network that expands the battlespace; enhances situational awareness; increases depth of fire; enables long intercept ranges; and improves decision and reaction times.

It extracts and distributes sensor information such that the superset of this data is available to all participating CEC-equipped units by fusing the distributed data from shipboard, airborne, composite tracking network ground-mobile units, Joint Land Attack Cruise Missile Defense Elevated Netted Sensor System (JLENS), and coalition partners into one fire-control-quality air track picture.

The system uses line-of-sight data distribution to share radar-measurement data among sensors and weapons to create one distributed integrated air picture. It combines surveillance and targeting information such that the combined system is greater than the sum of its parts.

The jam-resistant CEC obtains target track information to form one real-time composite track to help coordinate theater air and missile defense to engage incoming cruise missiles.

GKN Aerospace in Sweden is set to participate in feasibility studies on technology development for the future combat air system and advanced fighter jet engine with the UK and Italy partner industries.

GKN Aerospace and Saab from Sweden will participate in the study.

Using a joint technology development, the Swedish aviation industry aims to build and sustain air combat capabilities development economically.

Future fighter jets are expected to meet increased propulsion needs and sensors and weapons with enhanced output and cooling needs.

In the first quarter of this year, GKN Aerospace won a contract from Swedish Defence Materiel Administration(FMV) to conduct a study with Rolls Royce on future fighter engine technology development.

GKN Aerospace engines systems president Joakim Andersson said: It seamlessly fits our ambition to develop our market position in engine systems and enables us to benefit from synergies between our civil and military aircraft engine technologies.

We have many years of experience in international cooperation and we are convinced that this is the right way to go. Developing such a complex system as a new fighter jet engine is a major challenge that will require a lot of resources over a long period of time.

The cooperation shall take advantage of the best skills from each company while strengthening the ability of companies to support their respective countries airforces.

The latest development follows last years UK-Swedish memorandum of understanding to explore the joint development of the next generation of fighter jet capabilities and systems.

GKN Aerospace holds the type certificate for the RM12 engine in JAS 39 Gripen C/D.
