Scientists: Trained Dogs Can Smell Coronavirus

A team of German researchers have found that dogs are able to sniff out the coronavirus with an astonishing accuracy after only a week of training.

Researchers at the University of Veterinary Medicine in Hannover, Germany, have found that dogs are able to sniff out the coronavirus that causes COVID-19 with astonishing accuracy.

During tests, they found that eight dogs from Germany’s military could correctly identify the presence of the coronavirus 94 percent of the time after only being trained a week, as Bloomberg reports.

“We think that this works because the metabolic processes in the body of a diseased patient is completely changed,” Maren von Koeckritz-Blickwede, a professor at the university, said in a video statement posted by the university on YouTube. “We think that the dogs are able to detect a specific smell produced” by the metabolic process.

Despite dogs being used to sniff out a variety of contraband substances and even explosives at airports and other locations, “people have not really realized the potential a dog could have to detect diseased from non-diseased patients,” argues Holger Volk, head of the small animal clinic at the University of Veterinary Medicine Hannover, in the video.

The researchers suggested that the dog sniffing method could be employed in “public areas such as airports, sport events, borders or other mass gatherings,” according to the video’s caption — but only in addition to existing lab testing.

The COVID-19 samples were completely randomized, so neither the dog handlers nor the researchers knew which samples were positive and which ones weren’t. In other words, the researchers guarded against the “Clever Hans” effect, in which animals appear to be solving complex problems, but are actually taking cues from their human handlers.

WHO Calls COVID-19 the “Most Severe” Health Crisis in Its History

According to the director-general of the World Health Organization, the COVID-19 pandemic is the most severe health crisis in the organization's history.

According to World Health Organization (WHO) director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the COVID-19 pandemic is “easily the most severe” global health crisis that the organization has ever seen.

Ghebreyesus backed his claim by citing citing the sheer scale of both confirmed coronavirus cases and the global death toll, New Scientist reports. To date, there are over 16.2 million confirmed cases worldwide — and just shy of 649,000 patients have died.

“COVID-19 has changed our world,” Ghebreyesus said during a Monday press briefing. And the pandemic, he added, “has shown what humans are capable of — both positively and negatively.”

During his address, Ghebreyesus said that the guidelines for how to prevent transmission haven’t changed in the six months since the WHO declared the coronavirus a global emergency.

“Keep your distance from others, clean your hands, avoid crowded and enclosed areas, and wear a mask where recommended,” Ghebreyesus said.

He then went on to praise countries that either nipped their outbreaks in the bud — like Vietnam and New Zealand — and those that managed to wrestle large outbreaks back under control: Canada, China, Germany, and Korea.

But clearly not every country got its rear in gear: While he didn’t list any by name, Ghebreyesus didn’t understate the ongoing severity of the pandemic.

“The pandemic continues to accelerate,” he said. “In the past 6 weeks, the total number of cases has roughly doubled.”

Gene Therapy Lets Boy With Muscular Dystrophy Walk Again

An experimental gene therapy seems to have staved off a young boy's Duchenne muscular dystrophy, suggesting new treatments could be on the way.

A boy who was diagnosed with Duchenne muscular dystrophy — a disease that progressively weakens muscles and usually kills patients early in life — when he was four years old has now largely recovered after being injected with an experimental gene therapy.

It’s not yet clear whether the treatment, which delivered billions of gene-carrying viruses to his cells, will be a permanent fix, NPR reports. But two years after his treatment, Conner Curran has made an unprecedented recovery.

“Within three weeks he was running up the stairs,” Conner’s mother Jessica Curran told NPR.

Before the procedure, she said, he couldn’t even drag himself up the steps.

“He would make it past four stairs and he couldn’t do the rest,” she said. “He could not last a full day in school.”

The actual treatment was a two-hour-long injection of billions of harmless viruses that delivered copies of the Dystrophin gene — the one that’s missing or damaged in Duchenne muscular dystrophy — to Conner’s cells.

“The concept is very simple,” Jude Samulski, the University of North Caroline School of Medicine pharmacologist who spent 30 years developing the treatment, told NPR. “You’re missing a gene so you [put it] back.”

In that sense, he added, the virus works like “a molecular FedEx truck. It carries a genetic payload and it’s delivering it to its target.”

For now, many questions remain — like whether the treatment works permanently or if the new genes will eventually wear off.

Only nine boys have received the experimental gene therapy, so now there are plans to launch a large-scale clinical trial to see if the gene therapy could help other Duchenne patients.

Scientists Start Construction of World’s Largest Fusion Reactor

Engineers have begun construction of the world's largest nuclear fusion project today in southern France, with operations planned to begin in late 2025.

Today, engineers started construction of the world’s largest nuclear fusion project in southern France, The Guardian reports, with operations planned to begin in late 2025.

The project, called ITER, is an international collaborative effort between 35 countries with enormous ambitions: prove the feasibility of fusion energy with a gigantic magnetic device called a “tokamak,” as per the project’s official website.

“Enabling the exclusive use of clean energy will be a miracle for our planet,” ITER director-general Bernard Bigot said during today’s virtual celebration, as quoted by The Guardian.

Fusion power, in theory, works by harnessing the energy released by two lighter atomic nuclei fusing to form a heavier nucleus, and turning it into electricity.

If proven to be economical — that is, if the machine generates more energy than has to be put in to kickstart the process — the technology could lay the groundwork for an entirely new way of generating nearly unlimited clean energy on a commercial scale. Fusion power would be far safer than conventional fission nuclear energy, since there’s no risk of a meltdown or leftover nuclear waste.

But if the last six decades of fusion research are anything to go by, it remains an elusive way of generating net energy. The extremely hot plasma inside the fusion reactors is notoriously difficult to predict and control.

That’ll make ITER an extremely complex build. Its final reactor will weigh 23,000 tons, including 3,000 tons of superconducting magnets connected to each other by 200 kilometers of superconducting cables, all of which have to be kept cryo-cooled down to -269 degrees Celsius, as The Guardian reports.

“Constructing the machine piece-by-piece will be like assembling a three-dimensional puzzle on an intricate timeline [and] with the precision of a Swiss watch,” Bigot added.

The team behind the ITER project is optimistic about the tests they’ll be able to carry out using the massive reactor. By producing self-heating plasma, the team is expecting to generate ten times the heat than the input amount. In other words, the team wants to generate 500 megawatts — just shy of the output of the smallest currently active American nuclear power plant — from an input of just 50 megawatts.

Temperatures would reach ten times the temperature of the center of the Sun, according to ITER.

ITER may be a massive international effort to make fusion energy a reality, but it’s not the only one. A large number of fusion startups in the US and abroad are trying to turn it into a commercially viable source of energy as well.

Everyone in This French Town Just Got a Free Electric Car

The electric automaker Renault just gave every household in the tiny French town Appy a free lease on its electric cars to prove they work in rural areas.

You Get A Car!

The electric automaker Renault just gave every household in the tiny French town of Appy a free three-year lease for one of its electric cars.

Is it a PR stunt? Yes. Could it also do some good along the way? It’s possible! Business Insider reports that the company is trying to demonstrate that electric vehicles can be useful to people living in remote or rural areas, rather than just city-slickers, like many assume. And while the end goal is more car sales for Renault, wider adoption of clean energy wouldn’t be so bad either.

And YOU Get A Car!

The whole campaign involves fewer cars than one might think: As of 2017, only 25 people lived in Appy in total. Grouping residents together into households means that Renault isn’t exactly breaking bank on this stunt.

But all the same, Business Insider reports that each home will get a Renault Zoe electric car and a home charging unit. Renault will also construct one public charging station — the EV equivalent of a gas pump — in the town.

Whole Package

Ironically, it’s that last part that will make widespread EV adoption easier. With government subsidies, electric cars like the Zoe are already extremely cheap in Europe.

But it’s the lack of infrastructure like public chargers, coupled with limited battery range, that actually makes it difficult to switch from gas to electric.

Bill Gates Slams Elon Musk For Spouting COVID Misinformation

Bill Gates urged Elon Musk to stay in his lane and stop spreading

Money Fight!

Bill Gates has had enough of fellow tech billionaire Elon Musk’s habit of spreading coronavirus misinformation.

On Tuesday, Gates spoke at length about online misinformation with CNBC. And when the conversation pivoted to Musk’s online comments, Bill Gates said that the SpaceX and Tesla CEO seemed way out of his element.

“Elon’s positioning is to maintain a high level of outrageous comments,” Gates told CNBC.

Off-Base

Since the pandemic began, Musk has spread disinformation about the COVID-19 death toll, he repeatedly downplayed the danger of the coronavirus, and wrongfully implied that children are “essentially immune” to the disease.

“He’s not much involved in vaccines,” Gates said of Musk. “He makes a great electric car. And his rockets work well. So he’s allowed to say these things. I hope that he doesn’t confuse areas he’s not involved in too much.”

Basically: Stay in your lane, Elon.

Broader Problem

But the problems certainly don’t begin and end with Musk. Gates acknowledged that the very nature of the internet and social media makes it easy to propagate disinformation.

“When you let people communicate, you have to deal with the fact that certain incorrect things that are very titillating can spread very rapidly compared to the truth,” Gates told CNBC. “And we’ve always seen that with vaccines.”

NASA Announces Crew For Upcoming SpaceX Mission

NASA has assigned crew members for its Crew-2 mission, possibly the third time a SpaceX Crew Dragon spacecraft will visit the ISS with astronauts on board.

Motley Crew

NASA has officially assigned crew members for its Crew-2 mission, which aims to be the third time a SpaceX Crew Dragon spacecraft will visit the International Space Station (ISS) with astronauts on board as part of the agency’s Commercial Crew Program.

On Crew-1, tentatively scheduled for late September, NASA astronauts Shannon Walker, Michael Hopkins, and Victor Glover will be joined by JAXA (Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency) astronaut Soichi Noguchi. The four were picked by NASA for the mission in late March.

For Crew-2, Shane Kimbrough, a NASA astronaut who has visited space twice before, will be joined by Megan McArthur, who has also been to space, but not the space station. The pair will be the commander and pilot, respectively.

The mission will also be JAXA astronaut Akihiko Hoshide’s third trip to space, alongside ESA (European Space Agency) astronaut Thomas Pesquet, the pair will join Kimbrough and McArthur as mission specialists.

Hoshide has been aboard the space shuttle Discovery in 2008 and has been part of two ISS expeditions. Pesquet was part of two later expeditions and has spent 196 days in space total. The four astronauts have spent over a combined 521 days in space.

Demo Tape

The news comes just days before NASA will attempt to return SpaceX’s Crew Dragon capsule from the ISS as part of the Demo-2 mission, with NASA astronauts Bob Behnken and Doug Hurley on board, this coming weekend.

SpaceX made history on May 30 when it became the first group in history to launch astronauts into orbit inside a commercial spacecraft.

An official launch date for Crew-2 has not yet been announced, but according to NASA, it will likely be no sooner than spring 2021.

Virgin Galactic Unveils Sleek Spaceship Cabin for Tourist Flights

In a sleek announcement video, Virgin Galactic has unveiled the cabin interior of its SpaceShipTwo space plane, a vehicle designed for space tourism.

In a sleek announcement video, Virgin Galactic has unveiled the cabin interior of its SpaceShipTwo space plane, a vehicle meant to soon start taking those who can afford it to the lower edges of space.

In today’s announcement, Virgin CEO Richard Branson called the interior cabin the “design centerpiece,” claiming that his company’s space plane was the “first to be built inside out.”

“We started with what we believed would be an optimal customer experience and then we built the spaceship around it,” Branson added.

“It is the rocket ride of your life,” said Bess Moses, chief astronaut instructor, who became the first ever woman to enter space on a U.S. commercial vehicle during a test flight on February 22, 2019. “Space is deep, deep black, and looks endless.”

All images: Virgin Galactic

The cabin is meant to focus on the view without impeding the passengers from moving around to get a better look.

The cabin is dotted with circular windows and two rows of racecar-like seats. Sixteen cameras throughout the cabin capture the experiences of all crew members. Each window has its own camera to capture close-ups of those looking through it in awe.

In another luxurious flex, passengers’ suits will be designed by Under Armour.

Big picture, Virgin Galactic has ambitions to make space tourism a reality. The news comes after the company announced last year that it’s planning to launch a shuttle of passengers into space, on average, every 32 hours by the year 2023. At the time, the company said that a single ticket would go for about $250,000.

In June, Virgin Galactic signed a contract with NASA to start training astronauts for trips to the International Space Station.

Virgin Galactic also revealed a swank spaceport lounge in August 2019 located at its Spaceport America.

The company successfully flew its latest space plane, the VSS Unity, to an altitude of 51.4 miles (82.7 km) during a test flight in December 2018.

Whether that actually counts as “space” is subject to debate. While Moses was awarded commercial astronaut wings by the Federal Aviation Administration after her flight to 55.87 miles, many believe that the edge of space should be defined by the Kármán line at 62 miles (100 kilometers) above the Earth’s surface.

New Video Shows Inside Look at SpaceX Space Suit Lab

In a sleek new video, SpaceX gave us a rare behind the scenes look at the development of its iconic in-house built spacesuit.

Inside the Space Suit

In a sleek new video, SpaceX gave a rare behind-the-scenes look at the development of its iconic new spacesuit — the one worn by NASA astronauts Bob Behnken and Doug Hurley during their historic mission to the International Space Station in May.

Rather than pay external contractors to develop the suit, SpaceX designed it from the ground up in-house, literally in the same building where SpaceX builds its rockets.

Each suit is custom fitted to each astronaut. It’s meant protect crew members in case the spacecraft were to depressurize — not to facilitate a spacewalk.

Plug and Play

In the video, SpaceX space suits and crew equipment manager Chris Trigg says the goal was to make a suit that’s “easy to use and that the crew just literally has to plug in when they sit down.”

An umbilical plugs into a port inside the Crew Dragon spacecraft to provide a communications link, cooling, and breathable air.

“The suit kind of takes care of itself from there,” Trigg said.

A key design feature of the Crew Dragon’s cockpit is a brand new touchscreen interface. That means the suit’s gloves need to work flawlessly with it.

The next live glimpse of the suit in action will be offered to us during SpaceX and NASA’s Crew-1 flight, the first operational flight of the Crew Dragon spacecraft, currently scheduled for late September.

Officials Are Investigating The Chainsmokers for Spreading the Coronavirus

The New York Department of Health is investigating a recent Chainsmokers concert due to potentially coronavirus spread among a packed crowd.

What was supposed to be a socially-distanced, drive-in Chainsmokers concert quickly degraded into the sort of packed, close-quarters event one might have attended in the Before Times.

Now, New York’s Department of Health says it will investigate the July 25 concert as a health hazard, NBC News reports. The close quarters and spotty mask-wearing make it all but certain that concertgoers walked away from the Southampton venue with more than memories of a mediocre EDM-pop band — it’s reasonable to expect that many will have caught COVID-19 as well.

“Videos from a concert held in Southampton on Saturday show egregious social distancing violations,” New York Governor Andrew Cuomo tweeted. “I am appalled. The Department of Health will conduct an investigation. We have no tolerance for the illegal & reckless endangerment of public health.”

It’s easy to joke. These are people who went out during a pandemic and risked it all to see The Chainsmokers, after all. And the opener — we are not kidding — was the CEO of Goldman Sachs, who performed a DJ set.

But the concert is also a damning indictment against trying to open too many businesses or lift too many restrictions as the pandemic continues.

“I am greatly disturbed by reports concerning the ‘drive-in’ concert held in your town this past weekend, which apparently involved thousands of people in close proximity, out of their vehicles, a VIP area where there was no pretense of a vehicle, and generally not adhering to social distancing guidance,” New York health commissioner Howard Zucker wrote to Southampton supervisor Jay Scheiderman. “I am at a loss as to how the Town of Southampton could have issued a permit for such an event, how they believed it was legal and not an obvious public health threat.”

Physicists Say There’s a 90 Percent Chance Civilization Will Soon Collapse

Scientists predict, based on current rates of deforestation and resource consumption, that civilization will likely collapse in 20 to 40 years.

Final Countdown

If humanity continues down its current path, civilization as we know it is heading toward “irreversible collapse” in a matter of decades.

That’s according to research published in the journal Scientific Reports, which models out our future based on current rates of deforestation and other resource use. As Motherboard reports, even the rosiest projections in the research show a 90 percent chance of catastrophe.

Last Gasp

The paper, penned by physicists from the Alan Turing Institute and the University of Tarapacá, predicts that deforestation will claim the last forests on Earth in between 100 and 200 years. Coupled with global population changes and resource consumption, that’s bad new for humanity.

“Clearly it is unrealistic to imagine that the human society would start to be affected by the deforestation only when the last tree would be cut down,” reads the paper.

Coming Soon

In light of that, the duo predicts that society as we know it could end within 20 to 40 years.

In lighter news, Motherboard reports that the global rate of deforestation has actually decreased in recent years. But there’s still a net loss in forest overall — and newly-planted trees can’t protect the environment nearly as well as old-growth forest.

“Calculations show that, maintaining the actual rate of population growth and resource consumption, in particular forest consumption, we have a few decades left before an irreversible collapse of our civilization,” reads the paper.

Activists Replace Confederate Statue With Amazing Hologram of George Floyd

Activist Hologram

After Black Lives Matter protesters toppled the Jefferson Davis monument in Richmond, Virginia last month, activists put up a futuristic new symbol in support of the fight against racial injustice last night.

Replacing the likeness of the Confederate leader, who owned more than 100 slaves, was a 3D hologram of George Floyd, whose death at the hands of Minneapolis police in May kicked off mass protests against racism across the globe.

Last night @Change and the @GeorgeFloydFdtn, working with @WeAreKaleida projected a hologram memorial of George Floyd at the former site of the removed Jefferson Davis Memorial. This holographic memorial will tour the southern U.S. replacing former confederate monuments. pic.twitter.com/23fyoVLyHH

— Change.org (@Change) July 28, 2020

The project is a collaboration between the George Floyd Foundation and Change.org, Newsweek reports. The hologram will be a traveling installation, making five stops along the route taken by the Freedom Riders, a civil rights activist group that rode interstate buses into the segregated south in 1961. It shows Floyd, along with a stylized version of his name, reconstituted by glowing fireflies.

Tonight, the hologram will take over the statue of Robert E. Lee, also in Richmond.

Peace Symbol

The hologram was created and designed by Kaleida Hologram Co., which specializes in holographic projection screens and gauzes for clients including Netflix.

It was projected by Quince Imaging of Virginia, a company specializing in video projection mapping, a technology used to overlay video over 3D objects. However, it’s unclear how exactly the effect of the George Floyd hologram was created.

“This project seeks to replace the monuments of racist Confederate memory with symbols of solidarity and justice,” Sylvia Rolle, a senior campaigner at Change.org, said in a statement. “This project aims to reflect the power and beauty of those millions of voices standing up for change.”

“The hologram will allow my brother’s face to be seen as a symbol for change in places where change is needed most,” George Floyd’s brother Rodney Floyd said, as quoted in a tweet by Change.org.

Accompanying the dazzling visual, onlookers will be able to hear the voices of the Floyd family in the background.

7/23 update: Landfalls expected this weekend in Texas, Hawaii, Windward Islands – Yale Climate Connections

Visible satellite image of Tropical Depression 8, predicted to intensify into a tropical storm. (Image credit: tropicaltidbits.com)

The tropics of the Atlantic and Eastern Pacific have burst into action this week, with multiple landfalls expected during the final weekend of July.

Tropical Depression 8, moving through the central Gulf of Mexico on Thursday, is predicted by NOAAs National Hurricane Center (NHC) to arrive on the Texas Coast as Tropical Storm Hanna on Saturday, July 25. The depression could be upgraded to tropical-storm status as soon as Thursday night. A large field of showers and thunderstorms (convection) was slowly consolidating across the Gulf on Thursday.

A tropical storm warning was issued Thursday afternoon for the lower and middle Texas coast from Port Mansfield to San Luis Pass, with a tropical storm watch eastward to High Island, including Galveston Bay. The size of this system means that intensification will be gradual, so it likely will not have time to attain hurricane strength before reaching Texas.

As the system moves closer, widespread heavy rains will stretch across the Gulf Coast from Texas to Louisiana, pushing inland across southern Texas this weekend. Localized rainfall totals could exceed 10 inches, and flash flooding will be possible.

Hurricane Douglas surged to Category 3 strength on Thursday, with top winds of 125 mph as of 5 pm EDT. The powerful storm was located more than 1,000 miles east-southeast of Hilo. A brisk and steady west-northwest course is expected to bring Douglas near Hawaii on Sunday. Douglas is most likely to pass over or near the Big Island and/or Maui, but squalls and heavy rains could affect other islands too. Hurricane or tropical storm watches may be issued on Friday.

Douglas will begin to gradually weaken on Friday as it encounters higher wind shear, drier air, and cooler water en route to Hawaii. However, Douglas could still be a minimal hurricane when it reaches the islands. Only a handful of tropical cyclones have made landfall in Hawaii, and the Big Island has never recorded a landfalling hurricane.

A hurricane watch was in effect Thursday for Barbados, St. Vincent, and the Grenadines as compact Tropical Storm Gonzalo churned westward through the tropical Atlantic. Gonzalo is a tiny tropical storm, noted NHC on Thursday. Winds of tropical storm strength (sustained at 39 mph) extended out just 25 miles from Gonzalos center.

Gonzalos small size will make it especially prone to rapid increases and/or decreases in strength. Overall, Gonzalo will have its best chance to reach hurricane strength between Thursday and Saturday as it approaches the Windwards, passing through the islands between Saturday afternoon and early Sunday.

Once Gonzalo enters the graveyard of the eastern Caribbean, increased wind shear and stable air will likely force the storm into a weakening trend.

A small but well-structured disturbance in the central tropical Atlantic developed quickly on July 21 into Tropical Depression 7, then strengthened to become Tropical Storm Gonzalo early Wednesday morning. Packing sustained winds of 50 mph at 11 a.m. EDT Wednesday, Gonzalo was chugging west at about 14 mph, according to the National Hurricane Center (NHC).

The newborn storm is expected to chart a steady west to west-northwest course, likely reaching the Windward Islands on Saturday, July 25, and moving on into the southeast Caribbean.

Gonzalo is the earliest seventh (G) storm on record in the Atlantic. As noted by Phil Klotzbach of Colorado State University, the prior record holder, Tropical Storm Gert, was named on July 24 during the astonishingly hyperactive year of 2005, when the Atlantic spat out 27 named storms. Gonzalo follows the tropical storms Cristobal, Edouard, and Fay, which were the earliest third, fifth, and sixth named storms for any Atlantic season in records going back to 1851.

Gonzalo is also this years first tropical cyclone in the Main Development Region, or MDR, the low-latitude area from the Caribbean to West Africa where about 75% of all major Atlantic hurricanes (Category 3/4/5) originate. Up to now, all of this years named Atlantic systems have been relatively weak tropical storms that formed north of the MDR. The MDR typically is most active in August and September, so the development of Gonzalo signals an early start for this key region.

Sea surface temperatures (SSTs) across the tropical and subtropical Atlantic dipped slightly in the wake of a mammoth, dust-laden, sun-blocking Saharan Air Layer during late June. Since then, however, SSTs have rebounded and are now above average for this time of year throughout most of the tropical and subtropical Atlantic, especially toward Central and North America (see graphic below).

The warm water will provide extra fuel for any tropical cyclones that head toward the Gulf of Mexico, Caribbean, and U.S. East Coast. Klotzbach noted that this months warm SSTs are similar to those typically seen during July in active Atlantic hurricane seasons.

Small tropical cyclones affect smaller areas, but they are also famously more difficult to predict. For example, a small system may find a favorable pocket for growth within a larger-scale pattern that would clearly inhibit a more sprawling system. This seems to be the case for Gonzalo, which is moving just south of a large zone of dry air. Despite the arid surroundings, Gonzalo appears to be nestled within a moist pouch that could allow the storm to continue strengthening as long as it doesnt ingest too much dry air.

Gonzalos path forecast is straightforward, but intensity outlook unclear

Small tropical cyclones can also gin-up and spin down more quickly than larger, lumbering systems. Gonzalo therefore could reach the Windward Islands as a hurricane or as a weakening tropical storm, and computer model guidance has spanned this spectrum of possibilities. The official NHC forecast as of Wednesday morning split the difference, projecting that Gonzalo most likely will move through the island chain as a mid-strength tropical storm on Saturday, July 25. The high-resolution Hurricane Weather Research and Forecasting model used by NHC, one of the most skillful models for intensity in the two- to four-day time range, predicted Wednesday morning that Gonzalo would become a Category 2 hurricane before reaching the islands.

In short, for Gonzalo, the path forecast is fairly straightforward but the intensity outlook is more challenging.

What happens to Gonzalo after this weekend is riddled with even more uncertainty. A continued west-northwest track is likely. However, Gonzalo will be entering the graveyard of the eastern Caribbean, where high wind shear and stable air often but not always conspire to weaken or dissipate tropical cyclones. Here again, Gonzalos survival may hinge on whether it can maintain itself against potentially hostile larger-scale conditions.

Another tropical disturbance vying with Gonzolo for attention could affect the U.S. before the week is out. Located in the southeast Gulf of Mexico early on July 22, this tropical wave, dubbed Invest 91L, may gradually strengthen as it heads toward the northwest Gulf over the next couple of days. This wave is not especially well organized, and any growth should be gradual. Still, with the help of light to moderate wind shear and very warm SSTs, this system has a chance of becoming a tropical depression or perhaps even a weak Tropical Storm Hanna by late in the week, when steady steering currents likely will be driving it toward the Texas coast. Even if it does develop, it appears 91L will not have enough time to become a hurricane.

The earliest eighth (H) storm on record in the Atlantic was Tropical Storm Harvey another product of the hyperactive 2005 season, assigned a name on August 3. That name was used again in 2011 and once more in 2017 before being retired. Famously, its last incarnation, Hurricane Harvey, became a Category 4 behemoth that caused massive rains and catastrophic damage in Texas.

As if there werent enough going on in the Atlantic alone, newly upgraded Hurricane Douglas in the Eastern Pacific will be heading in the direction of the Hawaiian Islands over the next few days. Douglas vaulted to hurricane status early Wednesday, and it is predicted to reach at least Category 2 strength over the next couple of days as it travels over warm SSTs of around 28C (82F).

Douglas will eventually reach cooler waters late this week. Wind shear is expected to remain light (below 10 knots), which may allow any weakening to be gradual. Models suggest that Douglas could affect Hawaii around July 27 while still a tropical storm, albeit a weakening one, and this was reflected in the official NHC forecast on Wednesday.

June 2020: Earths third-warmest June on record

It was once a rare event for a tropical cyclone to reach the Hawaiian Islands, but in recent years that rule of thumb has been overturned. Tropical storm landfalls in Hawaii over the past decade include Iselle (2014), Darby (2016), and Olivia (2018). Hurricane Lane, which peaked at Category 5 strength just before passing south and west of the Big Island in 2018, dumped the heaviest rains (58) ever recorded from a tropical cyclone in Hawaii.

A study published in May in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences found an increased frequency of tropical cyclones from 1980 to 2018 over a zone extending east and south from Hawaii, amid larger-scale trends that could be explained only by factoring in human-induced climate change. We show for the first time that this observed geographic pattern cannot be explained only by natural variability, lead author Hiroyuki Murakami said then in a NOAA news release.

Explore the magical island of Sicily on this virtual tour – USA Today 10Best

I'm often asked what my favorite travel destination is, and that is certainly a hard question to answer. The Italian island of Sicily is always at the top of my response, and more times than not, I always get a blank stare, especially from those who have watched too many "Godfather" movies over the years.

With a history that spans millennia, Sicilys astonishingly preserved ruins from antiquity, breathtaking landscapes and beaches, ancient cities and charming towns, a warm and gracious population, and incomparable wine and cuisine are just a few of the reasons it is among the top of my favorites list.

Most travelers to Sicily either begin or end their tour in the ancient city of Palermo, the region's capital founded in 736 BC. Blessed by a perfect climate, an amazing number of ancient and historical buildings, renowned gastronomy and restaurants, a vibrant nightlife as well as an international airport, Palermo has become one of the top tourist destinations in Italy and Europe.

This photo was captured from the top of Monte Caputo in Monreale, overlooking the fertile valley below.

Speaking of Monreale, you definitely want to include a visit to this historic site during your stay in Palermo. While the towns charming streets and squares are picturesque enough, its claim to glory is its 12th century Norman-Byzantine cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Without exaggeration, the moment you walk through the portals (there is no entrance charge), you will be dazzled by the golden mosaics that line every inch of the walls of the cathedral. It ranks among the worlds most famous cathedrals for these exceptional adornments.

As you stroll through the cities and villages of Sicily, you may wonder at the colorful carts you see on the streets, many of them still pulled by donkeys or mules. These hand-painted carts were introduced to the island by the ancient Greeks, and portray scenes from Sicilian history and folklore as well as geometrical designs.

If you're lucky enough to be in Sicily during a religious holiday, you'll be sure to see these carts in a procession. Otherwise, you can visit many museums in Sicily during your travels that display this art form, which has been carried down through the centuries.

Italy is known for its flair for fashion, and its island of Sicily is no exception. Youll find a wide variety of shopping options across the island, from high-end boutiques featuring international designer items to local shops offering quite a variety of Italian-made clothing.

Dont forget the local markets along your travels, where you'll be sure to find souvenirs to bring home at bargain prices.

Tip: If you love 100% linen, this is the place to buy it!

If you're a lover of seafood, youll certainly be in culinary heaven during your travels through Sicily. From the best swordfish you'll ever taste in your life, to exquisite shrimp that are harvested in the deepest depths of the sea, to fresh-caught tuna that melts in your mouth, there's no shortage of delightful eats.

Vegans and carnivores neednt worry either. You can easily find a restaurant or market that offers vegetarian and vegan items, as well as delicious meat entrees, that will more than satisfy any discerning palate.

The island of Sicily, due to its strategic location, was occupied by many diverse civilizations over the millennia and monuments to these cultures pepper the landscape of the entire island. Ironically, some of the best-preserved Greek temples in the world can be found in Sicily.

You can marvel at seven monumental 5th century BC Greek temples in the Valley of the Temples within the city of Agrigento, and also explore the ruins of the ancient Greek city of Selinunte.

Our favorite is the temple and theater of Segesta, one of the worlds best examples of Doric architecture, serenely nestled in the rolling countryside in the western tip of Sicily.

The best way to explore and savor Sicily is by car, and it's definitely a road trip you will never forget. You can circumnavigate the 900 miles around the island in a few days, to be sure, but youll want to take 7 days or more to truly soak in not only the historic highlights, but the life of its people.

In the smaller towns, youll be delighted to see a simple lifestyle that hasnt changed for centuries.

The Roman poet Virgil cites Erice in his epic poem, "The Aeneid," so that's a big clue that this ancient hilltop town is definitely a place to visit during your tour of Sicily. Perched high on a cliff overlooking the valley of the eastern Sicilian shoreline, you'll feel as if you've gone back in time as you stroll through the town's ancient streets.

By the way, you'll be walking over cobblestones that were laid by the Romans in 100 BC!

We all know that vacation travel should not be a whirlwind event, especially when you try to cram in as many cities and experiences as possible in a few days. In Sicily even in the big cities there are always opportunities to relax and savor the moment.

On a leisurely afternoon in Erice, we stopped at a local caf and were entertained by the owner (and obviously accomplished barista) as he prepared our caffe lattes in grand style. And what a moment we savored: both the delicious latte and the show.

One of the most beautiful Sicilian coastal cities you can visit is Cefal, located just an hours drive east of Palermo. Youll find a lovely small city, filled with delightful shops and restaurants, but its history goes back to the 4th century BC. It was captured by the Normans in 1063.

The Norman king Roger II started construction on the truly magnificent Cefal cathedral (a UNESCO World Heritage site) in 1131. For a breathtaking view of this ancient city from above, follow the path (as we did) to the top of the hill for an expansive view over this ancient town.

Sicily is famous for its many desserts, the list of which is really too numerous to mention. Marzipan, confections made of ground almonds, are very popular in Sicily, as is granita, a light sorbet-like treat.

But the king of all Sicilian desserts is cannoli, which is made from freshly whipped ricotta cheese flavored with lemon and sugar, and piped into a crisp fried pastry shell. Cannoli have been exported around the world, but its a sure bet the best one you will have ever tasted is during your visit to Sicily.

As you travel through Sicily, you cant help but notice the image of a three-legged Medusa, which is not only donned on the official Sicilian flag, but is also embedded in many artifacts that can be found in Sicilian shops and markets. Actually, a variation of this symbol dates back to the 3rd century BC. The symbol depicts the three promontories of the island.

It's obvious an island would have unlimited beachfronts, which Sicily does, but some of the most pristine beaches can be found in the Lo Zingaro Nature Reserve, located a two-hour's drive west of Palermo. Azure blue waters, white sandy alcoves, and a magnificent hiking path make this a trail and beach to remember.

As you travel through Sicily, youll be amazed at the photo opportunities that will greet you, especially at sunrise and sunset. Plan to make use of these photographic golden hours for the best images of the glorious scenes you'll encounter as you explore this magnificent island.

If you're a wine lover, youve come to the right place. Sicilian wines have risen in popularity over the past decade, and no wonder. Many of the grapes that produce these excellent wines have their roots, literally, in the rich lava rock that surrounds the island.

Nero dAvola is one of the most beloved red wines produced on the island, and the whites are equally as delicious. One of the most memorable whites we ever tasted originated on the slopes of Alcamo (and it cost well under $10 in the local grocery store). That being said, if you love wine-tasting, this is the place to do it.

Views on Etna, Sicilys active volcano, are visible from many areas of the island. This image, taken from the deck of an Oceania cruise ship, shows a scene of the majestic volcano hovering over the ancient town of Naxos.

One of the most romantic small towns in Sicily is Taormina, and its easy to see why. Perched on a hilltop above the blue Ionian sea, Taorminas twisting ancient streets take you past imposing palaces, delightful shops and restaurants, and charming squares.

There's no doubt that the Teatro Antico di Taormina, an ancient Greco-Roman theater with awe-inspiring views on Mount Etna, has propelled it to one of Sicilys most visited destinations. It's still used as a concert venue.

It's a sure bet, once you get a taste of Sicily, you will want to return again and again.

Arrivederci!

Fight Island debate — Should the UFC fast-track Khamzat Chimaev’s development? – ESPN

The UFC's stay on Fight Island is over -- at least for now -- but Saturday's main event between Robert Whittaker and Darren Till was a fitting ending to a memorable and entertaining stretch of fights.

Action throughout the 15-fight finale card will have far-reaching consequences across several divisions, most notably with Whittaker's victory over Till, which will impact the rest of the year at the top of the middleweight division once Israel Adesanya and Paulo Costa fight for that title in September.

Saturday's action also had a little bit of everything, from veterans such as Fabricio Werdum knocking back Alexander Gustafsson in his heavyweight debut to newcomer Khamzat Chimaev's second dominant win in 11 days.

There's a lot to unravel, and ESPN's expert panel of Ariel Helwani, Marc Raimondi, Phil Murphy and Jeff Wagneheim breaks down all of Saturday's action, as well as the best moments on Fight Island.

Murphy: Jack Hermansson laid out his road map last week, which included him fighting the Whittaker-Till winner. I disagree. This might not be popular, but I believe Whittaker should fight for the middleweight belt next.

All fights from UFC Fight Night: Whittaker vs. Till will be available to watch on ESPN+.

Robert Whittaker vs. Darren Till Mauricio Rua vs. Antonio Rogerio Nogueira Fabricio Werdum vs. Alexander Gustafsson Carla Esparza vs. Marina Rodriguez Paul Craig vs. Gadzhimurad Antigulov Alex Oliveira vs. Peter Sobotta Khamzat Chimaev vs. Rhys McKee Francisco Trinaldo vs. Jai Herbert Nicolas Dalby vs. Jesse Ronson Tom Aspinall vs. Jake Collier Movsar Evloev vs. Mike Grundy Tanner Boser vs. Raphael Pessoa Bethe Correia vs. Pannie Kianzad Ramazan Emeev vs. Niklas Stolze Nathaniel Wood vs. John Castaneda

Watch the complete card on ESPN+

The champion Israel Adesanya defends against Paulo Costa in September. A Costa upset sans controversy makes this easy: Costa-Whittaker headlines any card you want for the strap. If Adesanya wins, it complicates Whittaker's next step. Aside from a few exchanges in the opening minutes, Adesanya beat Whittaker handily at UFC 243. Big picture, it's a greater evil having Whittaker in a holding pattern, picking off future challengers. You don't want to create a divisional bottleneck like Francis Ngannou and Curtis Blaydes have at heavyweight.

Whittaker's title shot wouldn't need to be immediate. You could run Adesanya against Jared Cannonier this winter and give Whittaker the winner, though I would argue that Cannonier offers no discernible difference in marketability than the all-Oceania rematch. Whittaker returned Saturday to the form that earned him the middleweight belt. The top-ranked contender has nothing to prove to earn it back.

Helwani: It's a tough setback for Till, who fought great, but ultimately, I think the right man won. Where does Till go from here? Well, next weekend's main event features rising star Edmen Shahbazyan vs. Derek Brunson in an interesting middleweight fight. Both are on winning streaks, though this is definitely a showcase fight for the blazing hot, undefeated Shahbazyan. If he wins, I'd do Shahbazyan vs. Till next. If Brunson wins, Brunson vs. Till works, too, but the marquee fight is Shahbazyan vs. Till. Yes, I know Till is coming off a loss, but that doesn't matter here. Either Shahbazyan takes a massive next step over a name, or Till gets back on track by stopping a hype train.

Fabricio Werdum shows no mercy as he taps out Alexander Gustafsson early in Round 1 with an armbar.

Wagenheim: There are a lot of moving parts in trying to come to grips with what's next for the former UFC heavyweight champion. He broke out of a two-fight skid, but he did it against a light heavyweight who was coming out of retirement. Werdum is 42, which isn't necessarily old in this division, but it definitely adds urgency for anyone hoping for one last title run. Most importantly, this was the final fight on the Brazilian's contract with the UFC. He likely will draw interest from other promotions, but considering that the UFC will be losing Daniel Cormier this summer, keeping Werdum in the fold seems like a good idea.

For that to make sense, though, he'd have to be booked in a fight that offers the possibility of upward mobility. I wouldn't put him in with someone high in the rankings because Werdum's recent body of work does not merit that. How about another veteran heavyweight looking for a high-profile opponent? How about a fourth go with 40-year-old Alistair Overeem, who has won three of his past four and is No. 10 in ESPN's heavyweight rankings? They tangled in 2006 (Werdum won), 2011 (Overeem won) and 2017 (Overeem again). Can Werdum tie the score in 2020?

Raimondi: That was surely not how Gustafsson saw that fight going. This was supposed to be his starting point for a run at heavyweight. Instead, he was submitted by a 42-year-old Fabricio Werdum. It isn't how he and his team drew it up, but it doesn't mean the experiment is over. Gustafsson is only 33 -- quite young for a heavyweight. Maybe someone such as Blagoy Ivanov would be a good next step. Werdum is elite on the ground. Perhaps Gustafsson just got caught. Let's see how he does against a sturdy Ivanov, who isn't as good in one category, like Werdum is. Gustafsson could use some victories to raise his confidence.

Khamzat Chimaev's TKO victory over Rhys McKee marks his second win in two different weight classes in the span of 11 days.

Raimondi: It's incredibly difficult to have two straight fights like this to start a UFC career. Chimaev is a unicorn. He's one of only two fighters in promotion history to land more than 100 strikes in his first two UFC fights and absorb only two. The other to do it? Former two-time UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez. That isn't terrible company, eh? Chimaev is just 26 years old and has fewer than 10 pro fights, but it seems like he's ready for an increase in competition based on the sheer dominance of his wins. I wouldn't mind seeing Chimaev fight a name next -- not a top-10 guy at welterweight but maybe someone such as Mike Perry. That would be really interesting.

2 Related

Helwani: Chimaev is going to be a blessing and a curse for the UFC brass. It's a blessing because, well, he's incredible. He won two fights in 11 days (a UFC record) in two different weight classes (185 and 170). He outlanded his opponents a combined 192-2 in both fights. On Saturday, he outlanded Rhys Mckee 68-0. That's absurd dominance. Afterward, he said he would be willing to fight in an hour. And you know what? I believe him. We have not seen dominance such as this from a UFC rookie in quite some time, and I wouldn't be surprised if he's in welterweight title contention by this time next year. He's that darn good.

He's a curse because, well, who in the world will sign up to fight this guy? It's going to be difficult finding him opponents now. In a perfect world, I'd put him in there against a top-10 guy. But if you're a top-10 guy, why would you fight him? For the sake of this exercise, let's put politics aside. If I could book him against anyone, I'd put him in there against the winner of next week's Neil Magny vs. Geoff Neal fight. If he wins that one, give him a top-five guy. Buckle up, welterweights.

Murphy: I can't tell if I hate this or love it.

It's easy to become overeager in booking Khamzat Chimaev. The Chechen-Swede held a 192-2 total strike advantage across two weight classes just 10 days apart on Fight Island. It was stunning dominance. Welterweight seems like his path forward after his move from middleweight early last year. After lightweight, 170 might be the deepest division in the sport. With his lopsided wins, the temptation to fast-track Chimaev builds, but there are tests among unranked opposition with serious UFC experience that better reveal Chimaev's immediate ceiling. He just turned 26; there's no rush.

Surveying the names of the almost-ranked, there's one I can't get past -- and it might be too much of a jump. Gunnar Nelson has serious grappling credentials. He won silver at Mundials in 2009. His only losses in the past five years came to Gilbert Burns, Leon Edwards, Santiago Ponzinibbio and Demian Maia. If Chimaev can beat Nelson, there's no doubt that "The Wolf" is ready to climb the welterweight ladder in earnest.

Wagenheim: Fighting twice in 11 days is impressive, but it isn't as though Saturday's appearance came on the heels of a rugged night of work less than two weeks ago. In fact, that's what was so impressive about Chimaev's run on Fight Island. In his second-round finish of John Phillips in his UFC debut on July 15, he absorbed only two strikes while landing 124. On Saturday, he did even better. He finished Rhys McKee in the first round, and though he dished out "only" 68 strikes, he absorbed zero.

Before anointing Chimaev as the next welterweight champion, though, we should acknowledge that his two fights in the Octagon have not been against the stiffest competition. Phillips is 1-4 in the UFC, and McKee was making his debut with the promotion. Still, relentless wrestling and a 192-2 edge in strikes are worth celebrating. Next stop for Chimaev: a step up in competition against another 170-pounder on the rise. How about Vicente Luque, who has won seven of his past eight fights, or someone at that level?

0:21

Mauricio Rua and Antonio Rogerio Nogueira pick up where they left off in their previous two fights as they trade punches in Round 1 of their bout at UFC Fight Night.

Helwani: Antonio Rogerio Nogueira is a legend. Make no mistake about it. These are some of the great names he holds wins against: Kazushi Sakuraba, Dan Henderson, Alistair Overeem (twice), Tito Ortiz, Rashad Evans, Tsuyoshi Kohsaka, Guy Mezger, Kaz Nakamura (twice), Vladimir Matyushenko. That's quite the rsum. He has nothing to be ashamed of. What a great career, spanning 19 years.

That said, we have to be honest: Part of his legacy is he didn't have as good a rsum as his twin brother, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, who retired in 2015 and once held the Pride heavyweight title and the interim UFC heavyweight title. Anyone who argues that point isn't being honest. Now, I hate to bring this up on the day he seemingly announced his retirement because that doesn't seem fair and sensitive, but it's the truth. It's a legendary run, nonetheless, and arguably one half of the greatest brother tandem in MMA history.

Raimondi: It isn't an insult to say, but he'll always be linked with his twin brother, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, one of MMA's best heavyweights during his era. "Big Nog" was known for his Brazilian jiu-jitsu. He was one of the best grappling big men ever. "Little Nog," who announced his retirement Saturday, could go on the ground of course. But he was a very good southpaw boxer with sneaky power, which he showed yet again in a close loss to Mauricio Rua on Fight Island. Rogerio Nogueira's rsum, apart from his brother's, is very impressive on its own. He will more than likely join his brother in the UFC Hall of Fame one day.

Murphy: If limited to Pride years, Little Nog would be remembered for a handful of marquee wins over feared fighters. His historic upset loss to Sokoudjou would be a footnote. Nogueira's legend was built in Japan.

Anticipation followed him to the UFC in 2009, but legacy-defining results did not. Aside from a major upset of Rashad Evans at UFC 156, Nogueira won the fights he should have won and lost those he was expected to lose. In hindsight, even beating Evans did more to signal the beginning of the end for Evans than the start of a new beginning for Little Nog.

A couple career-twilight sips from the Fountain of Youth led to knockouts of Patrick Cummins and Sam Alvey, but neither comes close to supplanting the Pride accomplishments from Nogueira's late 20s. Unfortunately, contemporary mainstream fans saw only an aging veteran losing championship rounds to Father Time, not the well-rounded mixed martial artist as that very concept was in its infancy.

Wagenheim: Nogueira will always be remembered as "Little Nog" after toiling in the shadow of his twin brother, who was the first heavyweight champion in Pride and an interim UFC champ. Rogerio never wore a MMA championship belt, but he did co-author a fight of the year with Mauricio "Shogun" Rua in 2005. He also owns victories over some elite competition. The 44-year-old began his pro career in 2001, so he is of a different era. His retirement fell under the radar of many newer fans, but for old-timers, the career of Nogueira is an event worth celebrating.

Rose Namajunas and Jessica Andrade trade vicious blows in the third and final round of their strawweight bout.

Helwani: There are so many to choose from here; it was a really fun 15 days for the UFC. In the end, I'm going with Rose Namajunas vs. Jessica Andrade, which won fight of the night at UFC 251. There were so many questions surrounding Namajunas' form -- both mentally and physically -- since the last time we last saw her, and she seemingly put all those doubts to rest in the first round. Her striking was beautiful and on point. But hey, Andrade was game, too, with improved head movement, and she came on very strong in the third after breaking Namajunas' nose. One wonders what would have happened had it been a five-round fight, but it wasn't, as Namajunas did enough to win two rounds to one. Regardless, it stood out to me as the best fight of the month.

Murphy: The best fight of the UFC's two-week Abu Dhabi residency provided objective entertainment in the moment, significant divisional impact in the immediate future and set up an anticipated trilogy in the coming years, one without an expiration date.

Rose Namajunas' edging out Jessica Andrade by split decision at UFC 251 offered all that. It was Thug Rose's first appearance since her title reign abruptly ended via Andrade's slam at UFC 237. The opening exchanges on July 11 proved that Rose's time away imparted the ever desired "rest without rust." A strong finish by Andrade generated enough scoring doubt for drama but not enough for debate that overshadowed the result.

After 15 minutes of crisp boxing, neither fighters' stock dropped in the aftermath. Both remain necessary members of any strawweight contender conversation, and it would be outright robbery if a future trilogy bout fails to materialize. Their sequel was the perfect promotional storm.

Wagenheim: Rose Namajunas vs. Jessica Andrade 2 was not a main event or even a co-main. There were three championship fights at UFC 251, and this was not one of them. But the pair of former strawweight champs put on a show that in some ways resembled their first meeting but had the added ingredient of a momentum shift. Namajunas once again looked sharp in controlling the standup, but while the first fight ended abruptly with Andrade's slam, this time Andrade withstood the best that Namajunas could throw at her, then turned things around with a big punch and takedown. Namajunas, her left eye nearly swollen shut, had to hang on to the end. It was an excellent bout, fought at a high level.

Raimondi: If we're talking about the most evenly matched and well-fought battle at the highest level of a division, I'd say Rose Namajunas vs. Jessica Andrade from UFC 251 was the top of the food chain. There were many good fights this month. A very fun one that stands out was the debuting Mounir Lazzez's win over Abdul Razak Alhassan from July 15. That was back-and-forth, as both guys landed big shots, and Lazzez earned some style points. But Namajunas vs. Andrade was an incredible display of mixed martial arts. It was violent, technical, tactical and had swings of momentum -- everything you'd want to see in an MMA fight. What a year it has been for the women's strawweight division, which also boasts the best fight of 2020, for my money, in Zhang Weili vs. Joanna Jedrzejczyk from UFC 249 in March.

Deiveson Figueiredo punishes Joseph Benavidez, stopping him in Round 1 to capture the UFC flyweight title.

Raimondi: Deiveson Figueiredo. Look back at the long, impressive career of Joseph Benavidez. He has been one of the best fighters at flyweight (and bantamweight before that) for the better part of a decade. No one has knocked him down three times and finished him in the first round. It's hard enough looking good against Benavidez; Figueiredo was a destroyer. Benavidez had never before been submitted. Figueiredo choked him out. On top of that, flyweight is not known for fighters who have major power. Figueiredo checks that box in a big way, and it seems like he has given the division new life. He is supremely exciting to watch and should give the 125-pound weight class -- which was once on the UFC chopping block -- a much-needed rejuvenation.

Murphy: If I separate recency bias -- the surprising newcomers -- from the equation and look purely at in-Octagon performance, welterweight champion Kamaru Usman remains the most impressive Fight Island participant. It's a short list of pound-for-pound fighters with a better UFC rsum than the Nigerian Nightmare.

Usman moved to 12-0 in one of the UFC's deepest weight classes, and none was terribly close. That includes the five-round beatdown of 2019 Fighter of the Year Jorge Masvidal at UFC 251. Usman's opponent changed on six days' notice, and so did his game plan. It did not faze the champion at all.

We become desensitized to greatness. We expect this from Usman. But for me, it's every bit as impressive -- the most impressive, in fact -- when his skill is visibly a cut above that of the other 101 fighters who made the walk to the Octagon on Fight Island.

Wagenheim: I'm tempted to go with Kamaru Usman because fight IQ is my favorite martial art, and fighting doesn't get much smarter than what the welterweight champion did to totally neutralize Jorge Masvidal. Sure, fans would have enjoyed watching "Gamebred" in a toe-to-toe slugfest, but that would not have been a brainy strategy for Usman, would it? With a title belt at stake, the 170-pound king put on a performance worthy of a throne.

But there was an even better championship-level performance on Fight Island, and it was turned in by Deiveson Figueiredo. He had a lot to prove after missing weight prior to his first fight with Joseph Benavidez and then winning controversially following a clash of heads. This time, there were no asterisks attached to Figueiredo's thoroughly dominant first-round submission win. He now owns the flyweight title vacated by Henry Cejudo, and he poses a scary challenge for any 125-pounder who steps in the cage with him.

Helwani: There is only one suitable answer here, and it's the new UFC flyweight champion (and the former sushi chef and hair stylist) Deiveson Figueiredo. What a coming-out party for the Brazilian. Imagine how he felt in February when he beat Joseph Benavidez but didn't get the belt that would change his life because he missed weight the day before, Then he had to beat the same guy several months later and had to hear over and over again how he was a dirty fighter because he head-butted Benavidez in their first fight, when in reality it was Benavidez who initiated the contact. Figueiredo put all that noise to rest with a virtuoso performance last weekend. He was even more dominant and impressive than the first time around. I'm curious to see what the Deiveson Figueiredo era looks like at 125. He might be the hardest-hitting flyweight we've ever seen in the UFC.

Turkey to suspend research in waters disputed with Greece – Stars and Stripes

Turkey to suspend research in waters disputed with Greece

ISTANBUL Turkey will suspend research for oil and gas exploration in disputed waters in the Eastern Mediterranean that abruptly raised military tensions with neighboring Greece, a top Turkish official said Tuesday.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan told his aides to "put this on hold for some time," presidential spokesman Ibrahim Kalin told Turkish broadcaster CNN Turk.

Last week, Turkey announced plans to dispatch research vessel Oruc Reis and two support ships to carry out operations through Aug. 2 south of the Greek islands of Rhodes, Karpathos, and Kastellorizo. The islands are close to Turkey's coastline.

The declaration on Navtex, the international maritime safety system, angered Greece and prompted criticism by the United States, France, and other European countries.

"Greece gave an extreme reaction after our Navtex as if we will go occupy Meis Island (Kastellorizo)," Kalin said on CNN Turk. He said the planned area of exploration stood about 180 kilometers away from the small island.

"Nevertheless, our president said 'since these negotiations are continuing, let's see what happens and put this on hold for some time," Kalin was quoted as saying.

NATO allies Greece and Turkey are at odds over drilling rights in the Eastern Mediterranean.

Turkey has accused Greece of trying to exclude it from the benefits of potential oil and gas finds in the Aegean Sea and Eastern Mediterranean, arguing that sea boundaries for commercial exploitation should be divided between the Greek and Turkish mainlands and not include the Greek islands on an equal basis. Athens counters that Turkey's position is a violation of international law.

"Everyone should continue working on their own continental shelves and conduct joint work in contested areas," Kalin said. He also said that bilateral issues with Greece should be solved through dialogue rather than through threats on Turkey's bid for European Union membership.

Kalin said: "Within the framework of our president's orders, we are ready to speak about all bilateral issues with Greece without preconditions: the Aegean, continental shelves, islands, air space, exploration and the Eastern Mediterranean."

In Athens, Greek government spokesman Stelios Petsas welcomed Turkey's decision. He described the latest research mission as "illegal" but added that he hoped the two countries could have substantive talks.

"This is a positive development," Petsas told private Skai television. "We want to have open channels of communication with Turkey and to discuss the issue that has been plaguing the two sides for many decades now: The demarcation of maritime zones. This is the issue, which of course needs the proper framework to move forward."

The two historic regional rivals have come close to war three times since the early 1970s, including over offshore exploitation rights, ownership of an uninhabited Aegean Sea islet. The most serious confrontation was in 1974, when Turkey invaded the Eastern Mediterranean island nation of Cyprus, following an abortive coup by supporters of union with Greece.

Germany has led a diplomatic effort between the two sides, and earlier this month hosted a meeting that included Kalin and the head of the Greek prime minister's diplomatic office. The meeting, held in Berlin, was revealed several days later by Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu.

Second Stimulus Bill: Pentagon Programs Gutted By Trump For Border Wall Would Have Funding Restored By GOP – Forbes

TOPLINE

Buried in Senate Republicans new coronavirus package is hundreds of millions of dollars in funding for Pentagon projects that President Trump gutted to build his border wall, the Washington Post reported Tuesday, part of a string of unrelated expenditures included by GOP lawmakers in their relief bill.

Earlier this year, the Trump administration diverted $3.8 billion earmarked for military construction projects and counternarcotics funding on the border wall, several times what Congress allocated for the administration to spend.

The move ignited a back-and-forth with Congress, with lawmakers on both sides objecting while the Trump administration argued it had the power to reprogram money without congressional approval.

Appropriations Chairman Richard Shelby (R-Ala.), along with other Senate Republicans, spearheaded the effort to restore the funding, packing hundreds of millions of dollars in funding into the GOP stimulus bill for Navy planes and ships and Air Force aircraft that were zeroed out earlier this year.

Lawmakers of both parties have criticized proposals to include funding for unrelated projects in the upcoming relief bill, including a pitch to include $1.75 billion for a new FBI headquarters that was pushed by the White House.

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.)toldCNN that hes not particularly supportive of the funding for the FBI building and Sen. Ben Sasse (R-Neb.)saidthere are a hundred problems with the plan, when asked about the FBI building.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) broke with the Trump administration on Tuesday, telling reporters hes entirely opposed to the idea of including funding for a FBI building.

The GOP proposal includes $260 million for a Navy Expeditionary Fast Transport ship, funding that the Trump administration had sought to almost zero out this year. The ship is built by Austal USA, a company thats located in Shelbys home state of Alabama, as the Post first reported.

$1 billion. The amount of money earmarked for the Navys P-8A Poseidon aircraft program in the GOP stimulus plan. The Trump administration had taken $180 million from the program earlier this year.

The bill also includes $720 million for the Air Forces C-130J Aircraft program and $686 million for F-35 aircrafts. The Trump administration had stripped $365 million and $156 million away from each program, respectively.

It protects all of the downstream supplier base and those are the place that are hurting the worst, a Shelby aide speaking on condition of anonymity told the Washington Post, defending the decision to include military funding in a relief bill.

Republicans included over $1 billion for NASA in the stimulus bill, including $818 million for space exploration.

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) lashed out at Republicans for the military spending included in their relief package in a message on Twitter Monday:

Despite COVID-19 pandemic, Mars missions all over the world are on a roll due to this big reason – Jagran English

This perfect alignment comes every 26 months, when Mars and Earth happen to be on the same side of the sun and are closer than usual.

The summer of 2020 was supposed to witness multiple space launches all the way to Red planet, which we desis love to regard as the Mangal (literally meaning auspicious). And unlike everything that the COVID-19 has placed a brake on this year, most Mars missions are continuing to accelerate at their designated pace, and schedules.

A total of four space missions were supposed to get launched to Mars inn 2020, which includes three rovers from various space agencies all over the world.

Last week China launched its Tianwen-1 (carrying a rover) and United Arab Emirates launched its Hope Probe from Japan's Tanegashima Space Centre (TNSC). On Thursday, 30th July, NASA is scheduled to launch its Perseverance rover. However, the Mars mission of European Space Agency in collaboration with Russian space agency ROSCOSMOS had to be postponed due to Coronavirus pandemic.

How 2020 becomes so important for Martian space missions?

For comparison, the global favourite space exploration spot of 2000s the Moon had just six missions in total between 2000 and 2009. The obvious technological advancement ever since has its due role to play, along with some encouraging life-supporting evidences which the previous Mars missions have collected. But the reason goes much deeper than that which is pushing Space Agencies to launch their missions specifically in the summer of 2020.

The precise moment to fly from Earth to Mars comes every 26 months. This is because the planets do not move in circular orbits, they are more elliptical or oval shaped. And also, since the Martian neighbour (Jupiters gaseous composition) continues to affect the shape of Martian orbit, a near-perfect alignment becomes all the more important.

This perfect alignment comes every 26 months, when Mars and Earth happen to be on the same side of the sun and are closer than usual. Since Mars is closer to Earth during this time, it means fuel needs to be put on the spacecraft, drastically reducing the rare resources that Space Missions are supposed to employ for such probes. According to NASA, this launch window every 26 months last less than a month. For example, all four space missions mentioned above had their initial launch schedules between 20th July and 15th August. The currently postponed European Space Agency-ROSCOSMOSs Mars mission will now take off from Earth between August-October, 2022, when the next such launch window will come, CNN reported.

According to NASA, Mars will make its closest approach to Earth in October this year, at only 38.6 million miles from Earth, the greatest distance between Earth and Mars can reach as many as 249 million miles.

Indias Mars Mission

Seven years after its launch, ISROs Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM), also called Mangalyaan, continues to be active. Interestingly, it was initially estimated to be active for just six months, but has survived more than two Martian years by smashing all skeptical anticipations.

Earlier this month, Mangalyaan captured the images of Phobos, the biggest Moon of Mars.

A follow-up mission Mangalyaan-2 remains in development, and is scheduled to be launched in 2024, which, according to ISRO, will reportedly have a greater scientific payload for more proficient exploration of the Auspicious planet.
